After you left for college, Rafe was destroyed. He knew it was his fault - he took you for granted. He chose drugs over you and he regretted it. When you left, Rafe’s mental health worsened with time. He didn’t take care of himself because you were usually the one to remind him to those simple tasks. He went out almost every night trying to numb the pain - he used alcohol and other girls to forget about you.

Months past and Rafe wasn’t growing. He was the same as when you left him; high all the time, parties every night. His eye-bags were evident as he scrolled your instagram; you were glowing. You looked so much happier than before. When you were dating him, Rafe was sure he didn’t see you genuinely smile for the last few months. He couldn’t help but think about his sober days, with you on the beach eating ice cream while you watched the sunset. That was the last time he genuinely smiled, too.

He thought he could never get better. He was stuck in place for months as you improved every day. He watched you grow through social media and he regretted everything that led you to break up with him.

Eventually years pass and Rafe was still high every time whilst you get awards for ‘Best Student’ and most improved player on your sport. You even managed to get over Rafe, dating a nice boy you had met in your Bio tech class. He was smart, kind and most importantly, sober. He was the time of man you could imagine your future with; a big nice house, two beautiful children and an energetic dog. A perfect life; the one you wanted.

You didn’t want to lie; you had thought about Rafe when you were with your boyfriend. In the beginning it was hard because in every thing that he did, you saw Rafe doing it better. Well, sober Rafe. Every time he held your hand, said a joke or even gazed at you lovingly, you imagined Rafe. It was hard for you, too.

To leave your sweet boyfriend behind. That night, you told him, he tried to get you to let him move in with you. It was a good option but you were tired. You were exhausted of picking up Rafe’s pieces. You looked at him differently now, you did see a monster and Rafe could see that. When he had started crying, you felt like he was back. But you also felt that way before but the old Rafe was never back. You did feel guilty for leaving him but for the first time in years, you’d chose yourself, your future over Rafe. You hugged him before you left and Rafe swears that was the last time he would ever feel your loving touch.

One night as he was laying on the couch, on the brink of overdosing, he felt like that was it. That was his life, that’s all he was ever going to amount to. In the high, he kept hearing your voice. Even years after you left, he still heard your voice. He remembers your soft voice, your passionate touch and the love in your eyes when you looked at him, even in his worse times. He remembers, even when you had left, he still felt the love you had for him in your eyes. Your eyes were always a tell; when you were lying, hurt or happy. You were easy to read, that’s why he loved you.

He heard you in mind as he laid on the couch, he heard your voice. “Why are you here?” “What are you doing with your life?” “Prove them wrong.” You were right, he thought. What was he even doing here? 20, no job, living with parents and addicted to coke; essentially living to die. He got up from the couch and it was like a switch in his head. He needed to get better - if not for you, for himself. He needed the prove everyone wrong. He promised himself a better life.

After months of rehab and working at the country club, he had become a better version himself. He was proud but he would be lying he said you hadn’t crossed his mind. He wanted to text you, to tell you how much he’s improved and you’d tell him you were proud. But he knew better than to interrupt your perfect life.

When he heard Sarah taking to her friend, she had mentioned you coming back in the summer. He stopped dead in his tracks - you were coming back? His heart stopped, all the memories came rushing back. He’s tried to forget about you but he knew that if you were coming back, his feelings also would and maybe that wasn’t a bad thing.

Midsummers was tonight and you hadn’t been to one in almost two years. Midsummers wasn’t your favorite event but you always tried to have fun. You were nervous; you hadn’t seen most of these people in years and you were wondering how’d they react to seeing you. You were worried about one person specifically but you weren’t going to just admit that. You had a boyfriend back home, you kept reminding yourself. He probably won’t even go to Midsummers this year; he was probably getting high and snorting coke with Barry.

You heard a knock on your door. “Come in,” You were finishing up your outfit, putting on your necklace.

Your mom came in with a small smile. “You look beautiful, honey.”

“Thank you, mom.” You replied, a smile playing on your lips.

You walked into the country club. You were nervous already, seeing so many people staring at you and whispering to one another. You were sure it was in your head but your heart was still beating fast. You hung off your father’s arm as one of his friends came up to you with a big smile.

“Wow! Y/N, you have grown up. You’re practically an old lady now.” His friend had chuckled as your father laughed along with him. “I remember when you were this tall!” He put his hand down to his waist.

“Oh, me too.” Your father said softly, reminiscing as he looked over at you with a big smile. “You’re still our little girl, though. You’re still a teen for a few months, not twenty til (B/M).” You smiled up at him. You were surveying the courtyard to see some familiar faces and you suddenly see Sarah Cameron. Your heart dropped. She caught your eye and immediately looked over to her side and then you see him.

Your heart stopped. You zoned out, gazing at him. It was like time had stopped; it was a like movie.

He looked so different; his hair was buzzed off and he looked like an adult. He didn’t look like the teenage boy you’d left; he’d grown into an adult, now. He looked sober, he was chatting with his father’s associates. He had a more mature look than before; he’d traded up his baby blue suit with a nice black blazer.

He then moved his head and caught your gaze as well. He felt his heart stop as well. Instagram didn’t do you justice; you looked so much better in real life. As you looked into his eyes, you remembered how you shattered his heart as much as he shattered yours. The emotions had come back. You suddenly became overwhelmed with emotions; sadness, guilt, happiness.

“E-excuse me.” You walked away from the courtyard and went outside. You needed time to process this. You heard fast footsteps behind you and you already knew who it was.

When you had arrived outside, you felt his presence, his signature cologne lingering. “Y/N.” He sounded breathless. You didn’t want to turn around but as you felt his soft touch on your shoulder, you had no choice. You turned to him, your eyes looking into his pretty blue ones.

“Rafe.”

It was a silent for a second before speaking up. “I’m sober now. 8 months.”

You couldn’t help but smile. “I’m happy for you, Rafe.”

He smiled back at you. “I saw you… on instagram, that uh. You have a boyfriend now.”

You felt like you were betraying him, by talking to Rafe. “Yeah, uh. Almost 6 months, now.”

“Are you happy with him?”

You were taken aback by his bluntness. Were you happy? It took you a second. “Um, yes.”

Your eyes were always a telltale sign; he knew you were lying. You might not even know you’re lying but he knows. “Good.”

You and Rafe started catching up about everything. Apparently he’d started working and now he’s making his own money but Ward was thinking about retiring and handing over the business to Rafe. You were happy for him. You guys hadn’t spoken in almost 2 years but you guys were like a couple of close friends. You laughed and joked like nothing ever happened. This was the Rafe you missed; the sweet, funny and sober Rafe. You were glad he was back to himself.

"-and Wheezie walked in, remember? It was so awkward, I couldn't look in her the eyes for days." Rafe remincied, as you laughed at the old memories. When things were sweeter and brighter, before Rafe had gotten into drugs.

"Oh my gosh, remember the talk we got from Rose and Ward?"

He started laughing loudly, as he looked down in playful shame. You both laughed and when the laughter died down, you looked at Rafe with a smile. You were glad old Rafe was now just a distant memory.

"I missed this." You said quietly as Rafe nodded, looking back at you.

"Me too."

It was silent for a moment. It seemed like that whole period of time, when he was addicted and you were trying to fix it, never existed. It was like that didn't matter. And it didn't, not anymore. Rafe had did it; he didn't need saving he just needed time.

Rafe had still felt guilty. He didn't even remember your last months together, he was always high. He knew he hurt you, not physically but he still hurt you. You viewed him as a different person for a while and that hurt Rafe just as much it hurt you. "I'm sorry I hurt you."

You turned back to Rafe, away from the beach in front of you. "It's fine, it's in the past. Let's focus on the present."

He sighed. "I-I... I want to talk about it, though."

"About what?"

"About everything. Why you left..."

You furrowed your eyebrows. "I left because I wanted an education, Rafe."

"No I mean, why you left me."

You faltered. You looked away from Rafe, to the wrong. Silence filled both your ears before you exhaled. "You were different, Rafe. When I looked in your eyes, I didn't see my boyfriend, I saw this man I didn't know. When you were on... drugs, I was never comfortable. I could never talk to you like we just did, it was always one sided."

Rafe didn't even flinch. It was the truth he needed to hear. "What do you see now?" He whispered. You turned to him and looked deep in his eyes. Of course you saw the old Rafe, sober Rafe.

"I see the old you." You replied quietly. Again, it was like all time had stopped. It was like no one else existed, as you looked into his unforgettable blue eyes.

"You were the first friend I ever had, you know that, right?" Rafe mumbled, still mantaining eye contact. "I wish we... I wish I made it work, I wish I never did-"

"Rafe." You said sternly, taking his hand into yours. "You're better now, that's all that counts."

He sighed, looking away from you. He sounded disappointed. "The one thing missing is you, Y/N."

You were taken aback. You looked confused.

"Everything is perfect, except I can't have you. All my dreams are coming true but my dreams aren't mine without you." He was being truthful, it was the truth. He looked back at you, sadness in his eyes. "You were the first good thing to happen to me, Y/N."

"Rafe." You were trying not to cry at that point. That was the truth for you, too. When you're with your wonderful boyfriend, you always see Rafe. The memories always replayed in your head. Every award you got, you always wished that Rafe was in the crowd. Every time you did good on a test, you wanted Rafe to be right by you, proud.

Again, the world had stopped spinning for the third time tonight as Rafe slowly leaned in. There was no one else in the world except for you two. He planted his soft lips on yours with a kiss. It was the best kiss you'd had in two years.

He put his hand on your cheek and deepened the kiss. You pushed back the memory of your boyfriend, embracing Rafe's soft lips. Your lips were always made for each other, Rafe always used to say. And it was the truth. The stars aligned every time the two of you kissed because it was just so perfect.

He pulled away and put his forehead on yours. It was quiet, both of you were trying to catch your breath. Now, there was something lingering in the air. "Let's try this, again. This time I won't fuck up, please."

Thrawn is an anti-villain. He’s not morally good but he isn’t evil either. Also people don't seem to be able to appreciate characters as storytelling mechanisms and instead take it personally when someone highlights a character's moral flaws.

TWO sheds in two months?! Miss Thing is back to doing the most I see! How are you two faring these days? How's school treating ya?

Philly actually planted a lot of honey locust for beautification/urban green planning, and I've read/seen that you can take the seed pods and boil the sweet um goo (??? I'm not a scientist lol) out of them to make a natural plant-based sweetener! But, obviously all the seed pods I see have been crushed by cars and feet and rained on and peed on etc etc so that's a no go 😢

One day, my foraging dreams will come true lol have you seen Alexis Nikole Nelson's (aka the Black forager) content on social media? She's super awesome.

A feeble attempt was made to revive the book club but it's still pretty dead lol at least we have this 😘

I made a dog fort out of our bed when it was really cold last month and Nova was hogging it the other day 😂

I’m actually on time chdhhdhdhdjskendbjdjf, absolutely insane!💀 it will be an entire year I’m just two days and I can’t cope! It feels like we’ve been with each other for a much longer time, and I’m just baffled at the fact that she grew to love me in just a year😳 it’s giving fall in love at a certain amount of time trope, if you know what I mean then you know! (I hope you do…) but still, thank you friend… you’re the sweetest evers!🥺❤️ and I want you to know that with every union, you’re also apart of it as you were there during the early days of my journey with this scaly girl c;

I still can’t get over the back to back shedding, and apparently neither can Freyja. Her beard has been dark during the process😅 anywho, I am doing okay. Between school, work, and having minor health issues going on I think I’m tackling things rather well. As for our girl, she’s a lot happier these days; we’re expanding her diet, and gathering accessories for her enclosure in hopes of sprucing it up! And she’s always warm despite the bitter winter biting us all in the rear before it’s officially spring. Seriously, thank goodness for ceramic heating!

Honey locus? I have to look that up, friend! I didn’t know that was a tree 🥺 very mesmerizing tree with a cool base and warm, autumn favored leaves… I want to see more of those! Philly has good taste. Got me romanticizing a type of tree 🤭 wait— so you’re saying that with this sweet goo that is extracted from these pods, you can make an organic sweetener?! That’s amazing 🤩 I hate that there’s no real opportunity to do that given that you’re living in a city where plant life/resources aren’t necessarily considered(?) Like, if it was cleaner and plants weren’t looked at as embellishments, then that it would totally be doable imo 🥺

I can’t wait to witness your foraging, I just know that it would bring me so much joy as a) you are doing your hobby and b) you’re sharing it with me and teaching me a few things along the way c; I can’t say that I heard about Alexis Nikole Nelson or any of her work but I’ll check it out whenever I can find some time ☺️

And 😭 rip to our bookclub! It was initially productive, and I loved being apart of it along with just hearing everyone’s perspectives on the material c: not to mention I totally bragged about it to my therapist at one point 🤭 it’s a flex, okay! I feel that there may be a revival period if someone finds a really good read 😂

That is soooo cute friend! A doggie fort sounds so cozy and I know for a fact that some cuddles took place 🥰 and of course Nova is basking in the comfort of it all, I really love that for her❤️ I hope Abbie and Lizzie are getting their turns whenever they can lolol and that Wallace and Heller are experiencing great comforts as well in their own feline way c: I feel like they probably squeeze their way into certain nooks and crannies that would incite a war if bothered or removed 😂😅

😅 - what's a story or scene you've created that you're a smidge embarrassed exists?

ok i will just. go ahead and expose myself here. see the thing is i've been writing on the internet since i was 12, so like....there are plenty of cringeworthy things i've written, BUT most of them were lost when nickolodeon deleted quizilla (rip fly high sweet angel) and also i'm not even really embarrassed by stuff i wrote in middle school anymore because i'm like awww i was a kid.

however! something that does still make me cringe a bit is the fact that while i was in high school, i got reallllly into voltron. like. really into voltron. and so the first fanfic i ever wrote was a self-insert shiro x reader fic with background klance. for those who don't know voltron - both keith and lance (klance) were ultimately made straight in the show despite EVERYONE wanting them to end up together. shiro, however, turned out to be gay.

anyway, i never finished the fic and i orphaned it on ao3 a few months ago when i decided it was too embarrassing to think of people going through my stuff now and finding it, but it does still exist out there on the internet 🤠

🛒 - what are some common things you incorporate in your fics? themes, feels, scenes, imagery, etc

hmmmm well homosexuality for one. characters that naturally tend towards meanness and have to make a concerted effort to fit their own moral standards for another. i also love having characters who are going to die talk about their futures, and i love when something is going wrong in a character's life and they're like "it's fine i have a plan" and the plan is just the worst thing you've ever heard in your life.

what else what else.....complicated relationships with mothers. fighting and then immediately making out. as far as imagery goes i feel like i very much like guts and gore and especially the juxtaposition of taking something beautiful and describing it in a way that's sort of horrifying, or vice versa. i love any metaphor that has to do with dogs, and idek why--there's just something about it. hungry dog. starving dog. kicked dog. wounded dog. limping dog. begging dog. snarling dog. gets me every time!!!

🎢 - which of your fics would you call your wildest ride?

honestly probably the hand that feeds lol just because i feel like i made the hogwarts years this overall light-hearted amalgamation of fun situations and tropes and then u reach the war years and it's like cresting the peak of the rollercoaster and just dropping straight down. and u crash at the end. but then i come and put u on a stretcher and kiss ur forehead. or at least that's the way it's looking right now--haven't actually written the ending yet so 💀
