I typed shuggy into tag and noticed you answering some stuff about them so I hope it’s alright to ask!!! I finished Netflix version like yesterday and I loved shuggy vibes and I told this on tw and some people came to me and told me it’s mid and there are better shanks ships, because he doesn’t really care about buggy I tried to look through wiki but it’s so many stuff there and it will take me ages to catch up Does he care about buggy?? Some might prefer other ships and that is alright, but straight-up saying that Shanks doesn't care about Buggy is just... Not true at all. That being the main reason why some people seem to not ship them is just ridiculous. The short answer is: Yes, he does care about Buggy. Quite a lot, actually. The Netflix adaptation skipped their flashback for literally no reason (I am guessing we will see it... Someday?) but it shows Shanks cares a lot for him.

A lot of stuff happens between them but the missing flashback is more than enough to know, I think: They were on a pirate crew together and these two are shown to be always arguing about stupid things from a very young age. Like. Childhood best friends type of thing. And I find it funny how people say Shanks doesn't care about Buggy when he is shown to be the one approaching him all the time instead of Buggy doing so. Shanks actually seems more open to showing his care for Buggy than him. Constantly. Long story short, things™ happen and Buggy finds this map and this devil fruit and he wants to sail on his own to sell it and find the treasure on the map to form his own pirate crew. Again, things™ happen and Shanks appears out of nowhere, making Buggy eat the fruit suddenly and drop the map into the sea. And because Shuggy is desperate for a new life and to make a name for himself, he jumps into the sea to grab the map. Of course, he's drowning, and Shanks doesn't hesitate, not even for a damn second to save him. Idk about you, but that is peak romance to me.

That is one of the reasons why Buggy is resentful toward Shanks. Although I think the map and fruit thing is more of a metaphor/symbology than anything else for, like, the real reason why Buggy resents Shanks. But that's another story--

And, if you don't care about spoilers, I'll just tell you THE Shuggy moment for me that shows how much Shanks cares about Buggy: They were supposed to go to the last island together with their crew but Buggy suddenly got sick and was told not to go despite his begging to let him do so. And Shanks (WITHOUT ANYBODY TELLING HIM TO, BY THE WAY, THIS IS ALL HIM) stayed back with him instead of going with the rest of the crew. He took care of Buggy when he was sick. And stayed back because he clearly didn't want to achieve their dream if Buggy wasn't there too or at least he thought it was unfair to do so without him. He was heavily worried about him, too, like-- (Not to mention the parallelisms of this with the same thing happening between a canon romantic couple in the same episode... Oda you're not subtle about Shuggy).

Most people will say "but that's a thing from the PAST! He used to care about Buggy but not anymore" but they are wrong. You truly, genuinely think that SHANKS is going to stop caring for his old friend??? ??????? ????? SHANKS????????? That man values personal connections and friendships so fucking bad it is. One of the things he teaches Luffy???? Like- There is NO way he doesn't care about Buggy. Also the bubble speech theory... When they meet again at Marineford and he smiles at him so sweetly... you do see my point though, I was saying that yes a piece of media can have a character imply they are queer, but it’s frustrating when they won’t explicitly confirm such, because of (in the case of… checks app store purchase statistics…. A multi million dollar game franchise!) the need to market to as many people as possible. Shumika will never be “canon” because some people just don’t like shumika and won’t spend money on the game if shu and mika are in a relationship, whether or not that’s because they like the ship or the characters or are genuinely homophobic or whatnot. If the writing team cared about telling a love story, they would tell a love story, not go “well maybe they’re in love, it’s up to viewer interpretation!” like this works, sometimes it adds to the meaning of the work, but enstars really doesn’t have an excuse for their constant “this character might have feelings for this other character, but we’ll never have them say it out loud!” except the fact it makes them a lot of money, since they can market to people who like a character being the way they want that character to be, whether that’s with that character being in love with another in game character or self-shipping or whatever else. Outside of shipping, this is why some characters like Shinobu haven’t changed despite wanting to change (he continuously talks about how he wants to be more mature and taken seriously but his cards continue to make him look small and cute because his fans like that about him and god forbid we change anything!) I just think enstars should not be your first thought when someone asks you about a good piece of queer media because they’re doing just about the same job as large cast games with characters of the same gender (minus Arashi) who continue to have characters go “we’ll do all these things to imply we could be in love, but we’ll never have our characters actually date! teehee!”

i can understand being frustrated about your ships not being "confirmed", but the obsession with what is "canon" and "not canon" is just straight up not a very interesting discussion to have. what happyele's or the writers' agenda is is not of particular importance to me. one of the first things they teach you in classes about media analysis is that once a work is out there, the intentions of the creator no longer matter. the only thing that matters in your analysis is your own thoughts and the way you interpret a text.

if we were having a conversation about how much the creator of something sucks, then sure, talk about that all you want, but i am specifically referring to discussions about the piece of media and these characters and their relationships and their growth and the themes of the work etc. those things are removed from whether or not the company writes the way they do because of profit motives or whatever. companies make money, that's just what to expect. if you want art that is free of profit motives, read something by an independent creator.

even so, it feels strange to place enstars into the bucket of "stuff that should be gayer but the bad company that makes it wont let it be" because the characters ARE so very openly queer. there are so many instances in it where characters pour their heart out to each other or offer themselves to another character in beautiful and poetic ways, and i think it's wrong to claim it doesn't count because they didn't confirm their relationship status at the end of it. if you ask me, there is absolutely no way to interpret enstars in a way completely free of queerness. there is so much explicitly queer text that ignoring it is just plain incorrect. but, if homophobic people like this game and choose to look the other way at all of the gay shit, again, that is not my problem.

why is canonization the only thing that matters? is a shitty BL with awful writing better and more worthwhile than enstars as a queer narrative because the characters had explicit gay sex on screen? are poorly written gay characters in the background of other media with nothing going on more worth talking about than shumika or wataei or rinniki or whoever else just because they say the words 'i'm gay' out loud?

queerness is so much more than all of that. it is so much more than labels and it is so much more than relationships that are easy to understand. it is so much more than the extremely narrow view of it that the internet has concocted about it over the last few years, where you’re only allowed to talk about queerness if you yourself are openly queer and out of the closet, and even then you’re only allowed to make art that makes for “good representation.” that is just so incredibly limiting. i would rather tons of companies who are trying to profit off fujoshis make vaguely gay media with unconfirmed romances and relationships that aren't easily defined by labels than have less queer art in the world.

more queer art means more queer people who will find something to really connect to. more queer art means telling more queer stories. why should who is allowed to write lgbtq media be limited? why should the kind of media people are allowed to make be limited?

its fine to criticize happyelements if youre unsatisfied with the way they do things, im not always 100% in love with everything they do either. i wouldn't even consider enstars to be the worlds' best example of a queer piece of media. but no one is forcing you to like or engage with it or give the company money if you're unhappy with how they write and market their game. they don't owe anyone explicit confirmation that any of their characters are dating, and it doesn't even matter if they do provide that confirmation or not.

regardless of who made it or for what reason, queer stories are worth talking about, "canon" or not.

Hi anon! I'm gonna link the post I talked about the Golden Deer here for clarity's sake lol.

I think when discussing themes of found family in different three houses routes, it's important to talk about Byleth. In a game where the single, main variable between possible futures is Byleth's interference, it means the story has to be written in a particular way--I mentioned this before when talking about character supports and endings; each character needs to be able to have a romantic ending with Byleth, which affects how their supports are written. In the case of the Lord's, this means you're given tangible reasons why you should've chosen them.

I mean. Let's be real here. Claude has the highest survivability rate of any character in the base game. He can't die if you're completing Verdant Wind (for obvious reasons), or Blue Lions. He's heavily implied to live to see another day in Silver Snow, and you can spare him in Crimson Flower! Edelgard and Dimitri die without the professor's stabilizing influence--but Claude? What does he lose without the professor.

That's sort of how I determine subtler themes of each route in a way--by comparing what you get with and without Byleth.

So when I argue that Verdant Wind is the most about found family, I mean it thematically; the other routes don't have tangible less found family, but without Byleth members of the Golden Deer just blatantly disappear unrecruited post time skip in several routes!

Without Byleth, the option for found family is removed for Claude in a big way, I personally feel, and not just by full recruitment runs lol. Not completely, of course--even in Crimson Flower a recruited Lorenz laments having to face off against Claude and Hilda is willing to die in defense of him and the city--but enough that it was blatantly shocking to me that if you don't recruit Marianne, she does not appear at all post time skip, no exceptions.

In a narrative sense, perhaps slightly unshocking; but in a practical sense? This leaves Claude without a healer.

Claude can't hold onto all his Deer even if you don't recruit any of them in the Academy phase. Silver Snow, Azure Moon, Crimson Flower--Marianne will always be gone; consistent, non variable. Depending on the route other characters like Lorenz might disappear as well.

The themes of found family are prevalent in all the routes, but since each route is pretty much defined by the Lord who leads it, I feel as though their personal relationship with the found family is most defining, if that makes sense.

People stand by Edelgard, Dimitri, and even Rhea for better, or for worse. Even recruited, characters like Felix make it abundantly clear that switching sides doesn't change the immense emotional attachment they have to their original lord.

This just. Isn't true for Claude.

Without Byleth, he doesn't get to keep everyone together. Without Byleth Hilda is recruitable in two routes. The idea that you could ever do the same with Hubert or Dedue is blatantly laughable.

Byleth's presence is what enables Edelgard, Dimitri, and Rhea to remain the most of themselves, if that makes sense. Edelgard's war strategy in Crimson Flower is a lot less aggressive and scorched earth then it is in the other two routes because she's had the professor as an emotional rock. Similarly for Dimitri, he's able to recover because Byleth is there to keep him alive and safe. And then Rhea will blatantly die in the Verdant Wind route where she doesn't in Silver Snow. Byleth, in every sense of the word, keeps these three characters alive and well.

But without her? They still inspire loyalty and devotion--unquestionable, again, if no recruitment takes place. Dimitri, Edelgard, and Rhea can all face up against you as enemies with the full force of their houses/allies (save for, oddly, Annette).

Claude does not.

Claude's whole route is about learning to trust others in a way that allows them to trust him. The Deer are devoted to Claude in Verdant Wind in a way they just, textually aren't otherwise, and that's due to Byleth's influence, both as a Professor to these individual students, and to Claude.

When I say that Verdant Wind is the most found family thematically to me, I mean it at a very base level. Claude knows he doesn't have what Dimitri and Edelgard seem to take for granted. It seems almost effortless, in Verdant Wind, the loyalty and devotion he inspires in his friends despite how often you, as Byleth, are told that Claude appears to be an untrustworthy and sneaky individual.

But it's easy to see in routes where you don't chose him that without Byleth, that image mantains. Claude is an outsider. And maybe he doesn't need Byleth in the way the other lords do to survive or achieve his dream (after all, there's nothing saying he can't open diplomacy with his former classmates after he goes back to Almyra so long as he lives to do so), but just as Byleth is uniquely able to be a peer to the Golden Deer, so can Claude uniquely trust and gain the trust of his house in full.

It's not as dramatic as the other two houses, and I think it's the point. Edelgard and Dimitri have already built a solid foundation of devotion and loyalty. Ferdinand and Felix (your "rival" characters in those houses) are loyal without Byleth, even if Ferdinand claims it's to guide her or if Felix complains every step of the way. Lorenz isn't. In Verdant Wind, you sort of take it for granted that everyone will be there at the reunion if they survived the Academy phase. Of course they will--they promised, didn't they?

But outside Verdant Wind, it's clear to see that you as the player took it for granted. And that's why I think Verdant Wind is thematically the most found family. It's not because the other routes don't love each other as much or aren't as complex or there isn't devotion. It's because fundamentally Verdant Wind is about Claude, for the first time in his life, having a group of people he can rely on and who will rely on him without hesitation. It's about the formation of found family, and how Claude doesn't need it to achieve his dreams, but man, does it give him something to achieve those dreams for.

Yes, he should. Further explanation under the cut because Cartman's bigotry is a complex issue. (Keep in mind an explanation for his behavior is not an excuse. Of course I don't fucking condone calling people slurs.)

Cartman definitely has a lot more to apologize for than Kyle given his extensive horrible track record in canon, but Kyle isn't exactly a perfect ray of sunshine in canon either. He's hurt Cartman too, especially in the early seasons.

Before Cartman became the evil, maniacal child we know him as today after "Scott Tenorman Must Die", Kyle fat-shamed him constantly and beat the shit out of him for often trivial reasons (like accidentally spending all their money at the fair) because in Kyle's eyes, Cartman was the fat loser of the friend group and deserved it. Of course over later seasons as Cartman got smarter and more manipulative, he retaliated to the extreme and took things far beyond any reasonable kind of revenge against Kyle.

In the fan comic I left those tags in tho, they both have a lot of things to apologize for in that scenario. Kyle is publicly dismissing their romantic relationship for completely selfish reasons, which for Cartman is so hurtful and invalidating given the intensity of his feelings towards Kyle that he retaliates with his knee-jerk response of antisemitic insults. Of course he shouldn't fucking do that, but he's lashing out with a tried-and-true method for him that he knows will hurt Kyle back. He's using his bigotry like a crutch to protect his ego.

So yes, like I said before Kyle needs to apologize to Cartman for lying to people about their relationship, and Cartman needs to apologize for calling him slurs. Kyle and Cartman's relationship is not as black-and-white as a lot of people think it is, even in canon. They both can be in the wrong for different reasons.

I don't have any that are just pets right now but my self black colony is like 12 mice in an enclosure. Provided you're keeping does, mice don't care, they do not give a single fuck. They love big colonies. Haven't you ever seen those videos where someone like, moves something on a farm and 27 gabillion mice come pouring out like water? They choose that. They prefer that. They are SO social. I put 17 mice from different cages into a big tote last night (so I wouldn't have to try to do it this morning at 4:45am with my brain offline) with 6 hides to choose from and they picked the biggest one and c r a m m e d themselves all into one because they just wanna hang out together. I see folks talking about how if you have a really big enclosure like 40 gallons (which you shouldn't because that's terrible, mice get so stressed out in large spaces, most people are not equipped to properly utilize a space that big for mice in a way that doesn't stress them) you shouldn't be keeping less than 15-20 does in it because it stresses them out to be so alone otherwise, and they're right. my stance on syscourse is that genic labels are a bit asinine, especially when replacing existing terms for a more confusing option, and I feel like it gives people the impression that origin is more important than it actually is. "Formed from a reason other than trauma" says nothing about functioning or dissociation. We're were born a system but the way our brain decided to be as a toddler shouldn't dictate how trauma later in life might impact our brain

i agree to an extent. labels dont “prove validity”, they exist for personal comfort.

to some people the distinction that trauma endured at a young age changed their brain functioning is important to them, and i believe in letting these people have the choice to identify as such.

on the same side of that coin, i think if someone doesnt want to care about a -genic label that they shouldnt have to. if someone wants to identify as whatever -genic label makes them feel most comfortable, then let them.

the bottom line of it is that -genic labels are not as important community wide as people make them out to be. they can be important to you, the individual, but there is no point in trying to force the community as a whole to disclose such things or to completely shun parts of the community for their label.

i also quite like what you said about labels having no comment on functioning or dissociation levels, because they dont. traumagenic systems in therapy can be well functioning and have low dissociative barriers. endogenic systems who have gone through extensive trauma can have high dissociation and difficulty functioning. the label doesnt dictate that, the systems lived experience does.

It means whatever you want it to mean. People all across the queer community have used "gay" as shorthand for decades now (maybe including queer people you love). If you just don't vibe with bi/pan on their own, then you don't have to have them on their own. There's nothing wrong with being bi or pan, but there's also nothing wrong with feeling like that doesn't quite encapsulate your relationship with your queerness.

If you don't mind me asking, could you explain more about your thoughts regarding JC and LWJ's actions re: the Wens? I think that part was the span of a year, right?. Seeing Kim's post about the actions, those are within his control but he can't do much outside of that related to the Lans. I remember Ava (@/jiangwanyinscatmom) taking about Clan positions and how little power LWJ would have held regardless if people saw him as Hanguangjun or the Second Master.

I feel conflicted about JC because he's in a similar position where those in power are telling him what is good and what should be done. How can he speak out against it? But isn't that what LWJ and WWX do? Albeit LWJ acts late in taking a stand against his clan, he does so knowing the consequences. He doesn't repent though. I think there's a fundamental difference between JC and LWJ here but I'm not sure how to conceptualize it.

Alright, so my take on this will likely differ in small ways from the other two’s, but the gist will be the same: Jiang Cheng abandoned Wei Wuxian to the mob that he also had a hand in creating, while Lan Wangji had always tried in his own ways to defend wwx and defuse the volatile situation.

For Jiang Cheng, no one was “telling him” what’s right from wrong; he already knows that he would be wrong to persecute the Wen remnants and is also even close to admitting he owed the Wen siblings a life debt. Plus, even if he didn’t, he’s a whole sect leader by this point and could’ve done whatever he wanted unchallenged, just as the Jin did. There’s a reason the clans keep calling conference after conference when shit goes down, even when it only affects one of them; they are not yet powerful enough to act alone with impunity like the former Wen clan was.

What ultimately gets jc to betray any moral uprightness he may have had is petty jealousy and resentment. Jc’s greatest weakness is allowing his inferiority complex to override his logic, making him a perfect puppet for the actually politically savvy characters. We see this when Madam Yu weaponizes jc’s fear that his father doesn’t love him in order to get jc to stand on her side against his own father. We see this when the Jin purposely spread rumors about how all of the Jiang glory is (rightfully) due to wwx’s actions in the sunshot campaign and jc’s hearing these rumors causes him to lash out against wwx as the Jin want. And we see this when, just as jc is about to explain why he owes the Wen siblings a debt, Nie Mingjue interrupts to say that the Wen killed his parents, reminding jc of his resentment and causing him to fall silent, never revealing the debt that could maybe have saved the Wen remnants lives. Jc had the power to protect the Wen remnants and wwx; he chose to give in to resentment instead and led the charge to murder them all.

Lan Wangji is in a similar position of power (clan heir to jc’s clan leader) but takes a completely different course of action pertaining to wwx. When everyone gathers to hear what happened at the Jin flower banquet, lwj publicly calls out Jin Guangyao and Jin Guangshan for lying about wwx’s words and actions to try and paint wwx as rebelling against the Jiang. He only falls back when his brother, knowing that the Jin are lying, steps in to side with them in their smear campaign. Lwj alone goes to check on Mianmian after she leaves from the slander against her for sticking up for wwx. As I’ve mentioned before, lwj was likely the only who inadvertently got the Ghost General rumors spreading by trying to reason with his brother and/or uncle about the truth of the Burial Mounds settlement, as he was the only one not of the settlement who had seen the newly awakened Wen Ning before the rumors spread. And let us not forget that lwj spoke up for the Wen siblings before their “deaths,” before rescuing wwx from Nightless City and fighting his own clan’s disciples to protect him.

I think in wwx’s first life, lwj did hold back on ways he could have helped, but whereas jc’s inaction was due to resentment at wwx, lwj’s lack of strong action came from a myriad of sources: not knowing what wwx needed/fearing rejection from him, his sense of duty to his clan (who he never had to go against before) vs. his morality, and just his personality. We see his conflict of wanting to help wwx vs. wwx’s boundaries and “clear” distrust of him when we get lwj’s convo with lxc before the fated flower banquet: lwj tells his brother that he wants to bring wwx back to cloud recesses, but wwx is unwilling. Lwj knows that something is wrong with wwx even if he doesn’t know what, but his wish to respect wwx and his choices is stronger than his wish to protect him at the expense of wwx’s boundaries. We get this same melancholic acceptance at the Yiling reunion parting, where lwj accepts wwx’s words that there is no other course for him regardless of his actions, as wwx would not (and morally should not) return the Wen or give up his yin tiger tally. For the duty to clan: lwj had never had to stand against his clan on anything, but the wwx/Wen remnants issue actually tested his sense of morality against his family. Yes, lwj was a clan heir and still beholden to his clan leader, but lxc never commanded lwj as a clan leader, only as an older brother. When lxc sides with jgy in his slander against wwx rather than siding with lwj calling out the lie, lwj is hurt by this. Just to make jgy’s life slightly easier, lxc was willing to forsake clan rules and his own brother to put the man he knows his brother loves on the path to destruction, and lwj knows this. But there’s still an issue that comes with this second conflict: his personality.

Lwj is a doer, not a talker. The moments he speaks up for wwx in wwx’s first life are shocking for the people present, but also easily diverted from by people who do not want others to realize the truth of his words. Lwj also doesn’t press what he is saying when he is diverted, giving people the chance to just condescendingly chalk his words up to “lwj is a nice guy so of course he’d speak up, but he’d never really side with someone we all ‘know’ is bad!” The most crucial moment that he should have pressed should have been that very first moment after the flower banquet, but the fact that his own brother sided against him hurt him into silence. All the other moments were a little too late until Nightless City, where it was a fight for wwx’s life. There he is able to show unambiguously whose side he’s on, as you can’t really say that someone only accidentally drew a sword against you or unintentionally injured 33 senior disciples of your clan. This is the moment where his clan realizes that he is serious about standing with wwx, though again by then it is much too late.

Lwj and jc in wwx’s first life aren’t being constrained by the hierarchy, they are being constrained by their own personal struggles: jc and his resentment and lwj his list of reasons. That’s why in wwx’s second life, jc has leaned fully into his resentment to the point of completely deforming all of wwx’s actions to poison Jin Ling’s understanding of his circumstances, while lwj has raised wwx’s son with love and respect and physically stands by wwx’s side in his second life.
