hi, I was wondering if you could advise me a bit on how to differentiate between depersonalization and plurality. And if it's likely to be worth figuring out.
I've felt as though someone else was/I wasn't in control of my movements before, but I can't tell it that's depersonalization or plurality. Additionally I don't know whether my different parts are just different facets of my personality or simply moods. And that same question comes up when asking myself if me rapidly changing my mind is just a change in mood. I've wondered if my ability to forget something that just happened is a sign of plurality, or a different type of dissociation (dissociative amnesia?).
just overall I don't feel like I can tell whether I'm plural or a singlet. I keep feeling very strongly one way or another about it.
And I do want to ask if it would be something I should bring up to my therapist. They know I dissociate, but not that I have questioned having P-DID/OSDD-1/USDD/DID.
Hello - depersonalization is a symptom and major factor of DID/OSDD and DPDR alike. Depersonalization/derealization disorder (DPDR) is a dissociative disorder like DID, but is not necessarily formed in childhood, with no dissociative amnesia between distinct parts, and no separate personality states. We recently posted a described infographic from UTEP on the different dissociative disorders - you can read the post here.
If you are questioning having a dissociative disorder with alters/separate identities, there are a few things to keep in mind:
1) People with DID/OSDD often can feel and recognize the presence of multiple identities and personality states. They may find evidence of or have interactions with alters who have different names, genders, tastes, memories, etc. Note there is a difference between having different moods/aspects/facets of yourself (a common and normal human experience) and having distinct and separate personalities/identities (an irregular experience that may point to something like DID/OSDD).
2) DID and OSDD-1 (the disorders which result in splitting alternate personalities) form due to repeated trauma in childhood. The same is not necessarily true for DA and DPDR - these disorders may form in childhood or beyond. Not all plurality forms as a result of childhood trauma, but DID and OSDD-1 absolutely do. We have heard that P-DID is just another term for OSDD-1 (used in the ICD rather than the DSM). We are not sure what this USDD is that you’ve referenced (UDD is a term used by clinicians when they suspect their patient has a dissociative disorder, but is unable to specify the diagnosis).
If you struggle with depersonalization, you definitely should consider speaking about this with your therapist. Dissociative symptoms can be debilitating, and consulting a mental health professional may better equip you to deal with your symptoms effectively. Disclosing your symptoms with your therapist is important so that they can give you individualized and accurate treatment. It may be scary, but it is necessary in order to ensure your therapist will be able to help you to the best of their ability.
Remember that answers to big questions like these usually won’t come overnight. It may take some time, self-reflection, questioning, and outside support to best understand what’s happening. We wish you luck in learning more about yourself. Ultimately we cannot confirm or deny whether you’re plural or just struggling with DPDR, but we wish you the best in figuring this out.

i feel like "endos" aren't actually endos and there's only two reasons as to why it makes sense for them to exist in my mind.
the first reason being that they have trauma and they just have so much amnesia around it that they literally just do not remember it existing at all. even if they say something like "my parents/guardians are so great and they would never hurt me like that" - just because it's usually parental abuse doesn't mean that it always is, it just has to be caused by extreme, repeated trauma and it is possible to be traumatized by other people than just your parents.
examples being: a creepy elementary school teacher who may not have been your teacher but they knew you, an older sibling, a cousin, a really fucked up neighbor, a step-parent, etc. - there are so many other people that could have potentially traumatized them when they were younger, so if they do have alters and they are diagnosed with a dissociative disorder, then they probably do have trauma that they just don't remember and they can't connect the dots to exactly who did it.
but whether they like it or not, that doesn't change the fact that osdd, usdd, and did are all disorders that were created from active traumatizing events during childhood.
and then, there is the second option. and that is that these people are just not systems, even if they may believe that they are. and what could be happening in certain cases, are alter egos. which despite both having "alter" in the title, are very different from dissociative alters and they typically are not seen as being caused by dissociative disorders, but are an underlying trait in some other disorders.
and what an alter ego is, is basically an alternate persona that someone puts on while talking to different people/while in different contexts. the biggest difference between an alter ego and a dissociative alter is the fact that an alter ego, while it may have different names and may act differently from you, is still you. it is you putting on a persona. however, an alter in a dissociative sense is literally a different person caused by a traumatic brain split.
this is not to say that someone could not have alter egos because of trauma, but there are other causes to why someone may feel the need to put on a persona and pretend to be someone else, even if they don't necessarily realize that they are doing it. but there is no reason other than trauma for a dissociative alter to form.
i feel like the majority of endo systems may be the second option because a lot of people with alter egos don't even realize that they are actively playing a part when they are that young, as some even have difficulty recognizing it later in life, but that doesn't change the fact that it is still you.
and the third option isn't a reason as to why it exists which is why i didn't include it earlier, but the third option would obviously be: they don't exist. they want to experience the things that come with dissociative disorders but have to make it up because of the fact that they don't have the trauma for it. obviously, that is not one of the more likely ones because i would like to believe that they actually think they're a system because it's a lot less... horrible and i also hate to fakeclaim. but the most likely, to me, and according to my therapist cause her and i have discussed this topic a lot because of how heated it makes me - is probably the second option.
Am taking notes and nodding my head along :3
Honestly I’m not well versed on the topic of endos and what not so i appreciate all of this very much /gen.
I only get upset when I see something stupid (I don’t have an example but it’s what made me make this post) just something that’s super clearly not true. (Like saying the disorder is just for having friends, or putting someone who does experience trauma readily down because they don’t)
I know systems have a lot of diversity and every system is different and new things can happen and can be interpreted in different ways and stuff.

basically:
endogenic plurality is not real
against tulpas (part of my opinion is it's cultural appropriation but i'm just generally against tulpas)
against shared spaces
you cannot have DID/OSDD/USDD without trauma
nuanced opinion on closed culture names: as a part of a system who belongs to a closed culture, i firmly believe that the opinion of one person in a closed culture cannot make this decision—we all have differing opinions on cultural appropriation and what is right. i also don't believe that introjects should use the name of their source name, even if given permission to by someone from that culture
supportive of self-diagnosis as long as the research done is sufficient (this goes with all disorders, not just OSDDID)
the term sysmed is transphobic. it's inherently used as a slur within the community—the proper term should just be real systems lol
the term traumascum is harmful to real OSDDID systems
against endos using the term system (they are not systems)
against endos using the term alters (you cannot have a system or alters without trauma)
against xeno origins (you either fit the diagnostic criteria or you don't)
i have a very clinical view of OSDDID and i "idolize the DSM" or whatever. don't argue about this with me. this is the only syscourse post i'm ever gonna make

We're making this a separate post in order to link it to our pinned, this isn't "important" per say, but if you care, here are our syscourse stances using this system linked here.
we just divided ourselves into two camps for simplicity, and other alters might (or might not) add their stances later.
opinion one
Ray / Ink / Viola / QL
NE / IDW / ONA / IDW / TXNO / DTNU* / CNP / SDXY / IDK / IDW / ESY / EAD (or EAM idk the difference) / EAS / XEN
opinion two
Mint / Reya
N / TC / MTR / IDW / TXM / DTNU* / CNP / SDXI / SMN / IDW / IDK / ESA / EAN / XEA
elaboration for q6, DTNU: it has never been required to remember trauma to have a CDD (i.e. OSDD/USDD/DDNOS/DID/C-DID/HC-DID), it's very likely not to if you have it, although it's also possible that you do. And you don’t have to be sure you have trauma to identify with one. And you definitely don't need "the right kind" of trauma to have a CDD. I don’t recommend casually digging into your past by yourself solely for “validity” purposes if you are struggling with CDD symptoms. But I believe CDD symptoms have trauma until that gets proven to be wrong.
You can discuss with us if we wrote "IDK" or "IDW", but otherwise don't, this isn't a syscourse blog
simple version (idk what those words mean rn)
anti-endo: Forcibly unnamed
endo-neutral: Lee
pro-endo:
other relevant posts: one,

hey guys, as someone with a traumagenic system and a pretty neutral stance on syscourse, i am literally beginning you to include UDD in your posts talking about diagnosable systems. i know it feels good to be able to get as specific as "OSDD/DID", but those arent the only two dissociative disorders that can have systems and there are a lot of people (like us) who have UDD diagnoses that are systems who just barely dont meet the criteria for OSDD/DID; the DSM-V lists UDD for a reason. theyre in the same category as the ones you always bring up, but you never include them (and if youre trying to convince people that dissociative disorders are required to have a system, thats a quick and easy way to disenfranchise someone who would otherwise agree with you). i could not care less what side youre on, but if youre gonna be taking about diagnosable systems, actually include all of them by saying "DID/OSDD/UDD" or the cover-all "dissociative disorders" please and thank you

Introduction
Hey, Alex here. Now, let me get something situated. We are currently unsure if it is OSDD-1a or USDD.
I already made an entire post but Tumblr was a fuck up and shat on my work. So I'm fucking pissed.
To make things clear, Ra--el's family has had a history of Depression, OCD, and Schizophrenia.
OCD is on his Dad's side, and Schizophrenia is in his Mom's side. Depression runs on both sides though.
And before you all say something, we are not in a situation to get diagnosed, our Health Care isn't the best, and neither is our Financial Situation. Ra--el makes sure he pours over his research, day and night when he is unsure, before he makes a decision, and even then, he's not sure.
Now that that is out of the way, time for the introductions:
Ra--el is our host, he is 16 years old. He has Moderate-To-Severe Depression from what was last told, OCD, and possible Psychosis. Aside from mental issues, he has Chronic Migraines and Heat Sensitivity. He always strives to be his best, and help others. Overall, he's a great person to be around, though he causes unnecessary stress to himself. If it matters,  he's ambidextrous.
Chell is his Younger Alter, she's around the age of 6, from what I last remember. She loves to finger paint and dance. She pretty happy-go-lucky, but she can get a bit temperamental at times. She's had the most interactions with another Alter, who we do not know the name of.
And then there's me, Hi, I'm Alexander or Alex. I'm fine with whatever. I'm 23 years old, I'm seen as the Protector/Avenger Alter. I have to be open about this and say; I have NPD (Narcissistic Personality Disorder), Psychopathic/Violent Tendencies. Also, I'm left-handed.
There is this other Alter, they are labelled as the Introject. They mimic Ra--el's abusers. Doesn't matter what kind, emotional, verbal, they are almost a merge of all of them. We don't know their name, and Chell has come into contact with them multiple times. She doesn't speak of what happened/happens.
So far, this is who is all here. Feel free to contact us. Oh yeah, I run this blog by the way. So most likely, if you don't specify who you are speaking to, then I'll reply.

Hey, I got a new therapist in 2020 and they recently diagnosed me with USDD. I know I should feel great about a professional finally looking beyond my PTSD and BPD and actually hearing me, but somehow I feel like I can't accept the diagnosis because there's really only two more people in my head with me. Three if we count the one that uses the same name/identity as me. I only really have a little, a co-host and someone who could be considered a protector. And then there's me, of course. Most systems I've met have well over 20 alters and multiple roles, my headmates and I are essentially just... vibing. Maybe it's the amount of syscourse and fakeclaiming on this app, but I feel like I don't deserve a space in the community. Is it even possible to have a system this small? I know I should trust my therapist but... I don't know.
yes. you are a valid system. our system is really small too, we've got less than 10 members most of the time. and i know a few systems who are similar so yes absolutely

Saw a post today making fun of teenagers who confide in their therapists that they think they have DID and that their trauma is being bullied at school.
And here’s the thing,
That bullying at school could have been happening for years. It could have been happening since they were between the ages of 6-9. Bullying is traumatizing. It is enough trauma to cause a person to become dissociative, DID, OSDD, USDD, what have you. Being constantly bullied, no matter it’s physical, mental, spiritual or emotional, is enough trauma to cause a person - a child - to split and fail to integrate. It’s traumatic to be bullied by the people you’re surrounded by for multiple hours, five days a week. We’re an OSDD-1b System, and a lot of our trauma comes from being bullied throughout the body’s entire goddamn school career. It’s awful, it’s alienating, it has sent us into so many suicidal idealization spirals it’s not even funny.
If they can name their alters, or “know what they look like”; sure, they might not have DID specifically, but they could still have OSDD or USDD. These labels are lesser known, so if a teenager says they have DID but still know their alters, chances are that they just haven’t heard of the other disorders in the System community.
And that isn’t something that should be laughed at, or gatekept - it should be something that sparks conversation and education. Let the teens explore, let them figure out, and, if they are open to it, educate them on the other labels.
Don’t fucking point at a literal child/minor - especially if you’re a whole ass fucking adult - who is trying to find an explanation for their mental health issues and make them into a joke. That is literally so fucking ableist and demeaning that it isn’t even something to be scoffed at. Be the grown up you’re meant to be and don’t. Do. This. Shit.
You aren’t cool, you aren’t smart, and you aren’t fucking funny at all. Stop gatekeeping disorders from kids and let them figure it out. As long as they aren’t hurting anyone, including themself, then what’s the big fucking deal if a 16 year old says they have DID because they think they fit even most of the criteria? It could mean they’re more likely to seek out a therapist, counseling, or just a mental health community to support them.
You don’t know the life stories of random teenagers online. Trauma affects us all differently. Stop fucking fake-claiming all because you think your experience is universal. Maybe just shut the fuck up altogether. I don’t know just a thought.
[Don’t Syscourse on this post, please]
