The Unfortunate Story of Lizzie Borden
Lizzie Borden was born on July 19, 1860 in Massachusetts. Her parents were Sarah and Andrew Borden. Her father grew up in a modest home. He struggled financially as a young man, but eventually prospered as a manufacturer of furniture and caskets. He would later become a property developer. He directed several textile mills and owned commercial properties as well. He eventually became president of the Union Savings Bank and director of the Durfee Safe Deposit and Trust Co. At the time of his death, his net worth was around $300,000 (over 9 million dollars in today's money).
Despite being wealthy, Andrew was very frugal. The Borden's had no indoor plumbing even though it was common for wealthy people to have at this time.
Lizzie had an older sister named Emma. Both girls were very active in their church. Lizzie even taught at the local Sunday school.
Three years after the death of Lizzie's mother, Andrew married a woman named Abby. Lizzie often referred to her as "Mrs. Borden," as she wasn't too fond of Abby. She believed that Abby only married her father for his money. The Borden's had a live in maid named Bridget, who the family referred to as "Maggie." Bridget was a 25 year old Irish immigrant. She would later testify that Lizzie didn't spend a lot of time with her parents. A family argument in 1892 led to both sisters spending time away from home. The girls returned home one week before the murder of their parents.
Tension had been growing amongst the family for months. Lizzie was especially upset about her father giving away some of his property to Abby's family members. The sisters eventually used these occurrences to demand rental property of their own, which Andrew gave to them. The purchased the home from their father for $1. The eventually sold the property back to their father for $5,000 ( the equivalent of over $163,000 today). The night before the murders, Lizzie's uncle John Morse came to stay at the Borden residence for a few days to talk about business. A subject that could have led to tensions rising between the two men.
Before the murders, the Borden family had fallen ill all at the same time. It was speculated to be caused by eating mutton that had been left out for several days. Abby, however, speculated that they had been poisoned.

Morse arrived on the night of August 3rd and spent the night in the Bordens' guest room. The family ate breakfast together the next morning. Then Andrew and Morse went into the sitting room to chat for almost an hour. Morse left the house afterwards to buy some oxen and visit his niece. He planned to return around lunch time. Andrew left for his morning walk at around 9 am.
Abby went upstairs to make the bed in the guest room between 9 am and 10:30 am. Abby then turned around to face her killer straight on. She was struck in the side of her head with a hatchet. This caused her to fall face down onto the ground. The fall caused many contusions on her face and nose. The killer then hit her 17 more times in the back of the head with the hatchet, killing her.
Andrew arrived back at home at around 10:30 am, but his key failed to unlock the front door. Bridget tried to open the door for him, but it was jammed. Bridget later testified to hearing Lizzie laugh from the second floor during this struggle to open the door. This is a significant detail, seeing as how Abby was already dead on the second floor by this time. Lizzie later said she wasn't on the second floor at all. She said that her father asked her where Abby was. Lizzie responded by saying that a messenger had given Abby a summons to visit one of her friends who was ill.
Andrew accepted this information and laid down on the sofa to take a nap. Bridget claimed to have gone upstairs to the third floor to take a nap. She said she was awoken at 11:10 am by Lizzie calling for her, that someone had killed her father.
Andrew was found slumped on the couch. He had been struck at least 10 times with a hatchet. One of his eyes was split completely into two pieces. It's believed that he was still asleep when he was attacked. He had been killed recently because his wounds were still bleeding at the time of discovery. A Dr. Bowen lived across the street from the Bordens. He came over and pronounced both man and wife dead. It's believed that Andrew was killed at around 11 am.

Lizzie gave contradictory statements to the police. She claimed to hearing a groan or scratching noise when she arrived home. A few hours later she told police that she didn't hear anything upon entering the house. Police asked about Abby's whereabouts when Lizzie recounted the story of her sick friend. Bridget proceeded to search for Abby to see if she had returned home unknowingly. That was when Abby was found lying on the floor upstairs.
Police believed that Lizzie was too calm and collected during interviews. However, they didn't check her person for bloodstains. Police roughly searching the Borden resident, but admitted to not doing a thorough search because Lizzie "wasn't feeling well." Police would be vastly criticized later for this.
In the Bordens' basement, police found: two hatchets, a hatchet with a broken handle, and two axes. It is believed that the broken hatchet was the murder weapon, as the break appeared to be fresh. None of the tools were removed from the home. The family (including the dead couple) were tested for poisoning. No poison was present. Lizzie attempted to buy hydrocyanic acid before the murders. She claimed it was to be used to clean her furs.
Two people stayed the night with Lizzie and Emma on the night after the murders, their friend Alice Russell and John Morse. Police camped out for the night outside of the Borden house. They claimed to have seen Lizzie and Alice enter the basement once and then to also have seen Lizzie return to the basement alone. Police then claimed to have seen Lizzie bent over a sink.
Morse attempted to leave the Borden house on August 5th, but had to be escorted back by the police due to being swarmed by a mob of people. Police did a more thorough search of the house on August 6th where they then removed the hatchet head. Lizzie was informed that she was a suspect in the crime later that night. Alice found Lizzie tearing up a dress in her kitchen on the morning of August 7th. She stated that she planned to burn the dress due to getting paint on it. It's unknown whether that dress was the dress she was wearing on the day of the murders or not.

Lizzie's inquest hearing was on August 8. She was given several doses of morphine to calm her nerves, which could have affected her testimony. She acted very erratically. She refused to answer several questions, even when answering was in her best interest. She contradicted herself by giving varying accounts of what happened on the morning of the murders.
The district attorney didn't take it easy on Lizzie. She was arrested and jailed on August 11. The inquest testimony was eventually thrown out of court and ruled as inadmissible during her June 1893 trial. Many of Lizzie's friends and family remained on her side until they heard her testimony during the inquest trial. The inquest trial was talked about worldwide and even made an appearance in The Boston Globe. A grand jury began looking over evidence in Lizzie's case on November 7. She was later indicted on December 2.
Tumblr media
-Depiction of Lizzie Borden during her trial
Lizzie's trial began on June 5. On June 1, another axe murder took place in Fall River which very closely resembled the Borden murders. This was noted by the jury. However, a perpetrator was found guilty in that case. It was proven that he was nowhere near where the Bordens' were killed at the time of their murder.
A prominent point in the trial was the discovery of the hatchet head that was found in the basement. Prosecutors argued that the perpetrator removed the handle from the hatchet because it was covered in blood. Although there was no bloody clothes found at the scene, the point of Lizzie burning one of her dresses was brought up. The defense never attempted to challenge this point.
Lizzie's presence at the crime scene was also heavily disputed. Lizzie claimed that she was outside in the barn for "twenty minutes or possibly a half an hour" during the time of the murder. Lizzie called for Bridget to come downstairs at around 11:10 am to alert her of Andrew Borden's death. She then sent Bridget to fetch a doctor.
Both heads of the Bordens' were removed for their autopsies. Their skulls were admitted as evidence to the trial. Lizzie fainted upon seeing them. Evidence of Lizzie purchasing prussic acid from a local drug store was excluded from the trial. This was due to the judge finding the incident too remote in time to have a connection to the case.
The jury deliberated for and hour and a half before ruling to acquit Lizzie of any charges. When she left the courthouse she told a reporter that she was "the happiest woman in the world."
This trial is comparable to the O.J. Simpson trial as far as infamy goes. The Borden case is a landmark in publicity and public interest in historical American legal proceedings.
Tumblr media
-Jury that acquitted Lizzie Borden
After the trial Lizzie and Emma moved into a large house together. Lizzie began using the name "Lizbeth Borden." The girls inherited both Andrew and Abby Borden's estates.
Lizzie was ostracized by the people around her. She was later accused of shoplifting in 1897. In 1905 Emma moved away from Lizbeth after an argument. The sisters never saw each other again.
Tumblr media
-Lizbeth Borden in her later years
Lizbeth died of pneumonia on June 1, 1927. She was 66 years old. Very few people attended her funeral, and the services weren't published in the local newspaper. Oddly enough, Emma died nine days later from nephritis. Neither sister had ever married. They were buried side by side in a family cemetery plot.
Lizbeth was worth $250,000 at the time of her death. She owned a house, office buildings, shares in utilities, two cars, and a vast amount of jewelry. She left $30,000 to the Fall River Animal Rescue League and $500 for the care of her father's grave. She left $6,000 to a cousin and a close friend. Several other friends and family members received between $1,000 and $5,000.
Lizzie's life was immortalized in a jump rope rhyme: "Lizzie Borden took an axe and gave her mother forty sacks. When she saw what she had done, she gave her father forty one."

It was a Sunday afternoon when Michael and his brother Jones decided to go by the local beach with the intent to break into people's cars to steal radios for resale. Although they have been caught multiple times by the police, they never stopped stealing because they had to meet ends. With their mom's addiction to meth and their dad missing from the picture, Michael and Jones had to figure out their life really fast.
However, that Sunday afternoon, things were about to take a different turn when the car they broke in had two teenage boys having sex.
Scared that the boys would report the incident to the cops, Jones held them at gunpoint, forced them to get dressed, and directed them to drive the car to an isolated area. Although Michael told his brother not to hurt the boys, Jones shot both boys once they were away from the populated beach area.
Jones undressed them with his brother's help upon killing the boys, dumped their bodies in a swamp nearby, put their clothes in the bag that they usually carry to put stolen goods, and drove away in the white el Camino.
Jones and Michael drove the stolen vehicle to a local bank following the killings. Although the reasons for going there are unclear, that specific Sunday afternoon, the two brothers had a dark cloud hanging over their heads with the grim reaper following them.
The two wore colored ski masks and broke into the local united bank, and robbed about $2,000 in cash.
As they fled the bank due to the alarm going off and alerting the authorities, Jones and Michael hit a pedestrian while trying not to get caught. Jones and Michael drove back to their residence with the stolen vehicle and stolen money.
Acting on a tip by a witness, the local police were able to apprehend the two brothers the following morning. They were celebrating with two prostitutes in the motel room where they were trying to lay low. Police recovered 20 unfired rounds of the 9mm ammunition from Jones's gun. In addition, clothing and other effects linked to the robbery were smoldering in the fireplace.
As the police questioned Jones And Michael about that Sunday's afternoon event, Michael, fearing the consequences for him and his brother's action, gave a voluntary statement describing the abduction and the killing of the victims in detail. Officers went to the scene of the murder and discovered the two murdered victims naked, with one of them missing a big chunk of his leg.
When initially interviewed by authorities, Jones and Michael admitted robbing the bank but denied kidnapping two boys or killing them. However, as Michael was getting more scared due to the allegations against his brothers and Him that were so accurate, He continued to deny any involvement in the murders, indicating that his brother had suggested the robbery. Finally, as the District Attorney's Office filed felony charges of auto theft, burglary, and manslaughter due to the hit and run, Michael, who was afraid of getting the death penalty, decided to explain everything to the police, including the two boys' murder.
On March 6, 1979, Robert Alton Harris was convicted in San Diego County, Superior Court of two counts of murder in the first degree with special circumstances and kidnapping. Thanks to his confession and genuine remorse, Michael was only convicted of kidnapping and sentenced to six years in state prison. He was discharged in 1999.
ON the other hand, things did not end up well for Jones, who showed no remorse. As a result, Jones was sentenced to the death penalty. He was executed in 2000 in the gas chamber at the State Prison. Jones requested and was given two large pizzas, a bucket of fried chicken, and ice cream for his last meal. Following Jone's execution, the body was removed from the chamber.
As Jones killed these two innocent boys, he did not know that he was also dancing with the grim reaper.

The Unfortunate Story of Edmund Kemper
Edmund Kemper III was born in Burbank, California on December 18, 1948. He was a middle child and the only son in his family. His parents' names were Clarnell and Edmund II. His father was a veteran and an electrician. Edmund's parents had a very tumultuous relationship. Edmund was a very large child, weighing 13 pounds at birth. He was ahead taller than other kids his age by the age of four. He also showed signs of antisocial behavior early on in his childhood. At 10 years old, it is known that Edmund buried a cat alive. Once he knew the cat was dead, he dug up the cat, decapitated it, and put its head on a spike. He admitted that lying to his parents about this incident gave him pleasure. He killed another cat at age 13 because he believed the cat liked his sister more than him. He kept pieces of this cat in his closet for a while until his mother found them.
These dark fantasies weren't the only one's Edmund would experience through the years. He often removed the heads and hands from his sister's dolls. When asked if Edmund would want to kiss his attractive teacher, he responded, "If I kiss her, I'd have to kill her first."
Edmund once snuck out of the house carrying his father's bayonet. He went to his teacher's house and proceeded to watch her through her windows. His favorite games to play as a child were "Gas Chamber" and "Electric Chair." He liked asking his sisters to pretend to kill him when they played. Edmund experienced two scary childhood traumas: being pushed in front of a train by his sister and being pushed into the deep end of the pool by his sister. He made is through both of these events virtually unharmed.
Edmund was very troubled by his parents' separation in 1957. While Edmund had a good relationship with his father, he didn't care for his mother very much. She was a neurotic, domineering alcoholic. She would frequently belittle, humiliate and abuse him. She often made him sleep in the locked basement because she was supposedly afraid of what he would do to his sisters. She often teased the 6'4 teen for being too tall. She refused to show him affection for fear that it would make him gay. Edmund described his mother as a "sick, angry woman" Many people believed Clarnell may have suffered from Borderline Personality Disorder.
At 14 years old, Edmund ran away from home to reunite with his father. He arrived to find his father had started a whole new family that didn't really include him. He stayed with his father for a short time before being sent to live with his grandparents. Edmund wasn't pleased with this living arrangement. He referred to his grandfather as "senile," and described his grandmother as "constantly emasculating" him and his grandfather.
Tumblr media
On August 27, 1964 Edmund got into an argument with his grandmother Matilda Kemper at the dinner table. In the midst of the argument, Edmund got up, retrieved a gun that belonged to his grandfather, and returned to the dinner table where he proceeded to shoot his grandmother in the head. He then shot her twice in the back. It's also been reported that she suffered from several stab wounds with a kitchen knife postmortem.
When Edmund's grandfather returned home after a trip to the grocery store, Edmund fatally shot him in the driveway. Edmund then called his mother asking for advice. She told him he needed to call the police. Edmund did so willingly, and awaited to be arrested. Edmund was quoted as saying that he, "just wanted to see what it felt like to kill Grandma." He admitted to killing his grandfather to spare him the sight of his dead wife.
Edmund's crimes were deemed incomprehensible for a 15 year old. He was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. He was sent to Atascadero State Hospital which was a maximum security facility for mentally ill convicts.
Tumblr media
Doctors at Atascadero disagreed with Edmund's original diagnoses. He was rediagnosed with a "personality trait disturbance, passive aggressive type." Kemper's IQ was measured at 145.
Edmund was a model prisoner and was eventually trained to run psychiatric tests on other inmates. He was noted as taking pride in his work. Kemper also joined the Jaycees while institutionalized. However it was while he was running tests on sex offenders that he picked up tips for how to successfully kill people.
Tumblr media
Edmund was released on parole on his 21st birthday on December 18, 1969. This was against the recommendations of the prison psychiatrists. His mother agreed to take him in. She had remarried and divorced again by this time. It appeared as if Edmund had been rehabilitated. So much so, that his criminal record was expunged on November 29, 1972.
Edmund's parole required him to attend community college. He wanted to be a police officer, but was turned away due to his height which was 6'9 by this time. He was nicknamed "Big Ed." Although Edmund was rejected from the police academy, he remained friends with many of the officers.
Kemper found a job working with the California Highway Department, but his relationship with his mother was still suffering. Neighbors heard them arguing frequently. Edmund described these encounters with his mother as follows: "My mother and I started right in on horrendous battles, just horrible battles, violent and vicious. I've never been in such a vicious verbal battle with anyone. It would go to fists with a man, but this was my mother, and I couldn't stand the thought of my mother and I doing these things. She insisted on it and just over stupid thing. I remember one roof-raiser was over whether I should have my teeth cleaned."
Kemper eventually saved up enough money to move in with a friend, but his mother had a hard time with him leaving. She called him frequently and would drop by unannounced. Whenever Edmund struggled with money, he would temporarily move back into his mother's house. Edmund eventually met a girl at Santa Cruz beach. The two got engaged in March 1973. The engagement was called off after Edmund's second arrest. Her name was never released to the public.
Edmund was once greatly injured during a motorcycle accident. He was awarded $15,000 in a civil suit because of it. He used the money to buy a new car which he started using to pick up female hitchhikers. He started carrying suspicious items around in his car such as: plastic bags, knives, blankets, and handcuffs. He started out by picking the women up and then letting them go. He claimed to have picked up over 150 women before hurting anyone. He often referred to his homicidal urges as "little zappies."
Tumblr media
Edmund killed 8 people between May of 1972 and April of 1973. He would pick up female hitchhikers, take them to isolated places, murder them, and take their bodies home. He would then decapitate them, sexually assault the corpses, and dismember them. He claimed that the arguments with his mother are what drove him to look for victims. It's believed that these victims were just surrogates for Edmund's mother and the rage he had toward her.
Tumblr media
When all was said and done, Edmund was indicted on 8 counts of first degree murder on May 7, 1973. Edmund had given a detailed confession to the police, so he was advised by his attorney to enter a guilty by reason of insanity plea. He attempted suicide twice while in custody. His trial began on October 23, 1973.
Three different psychiatrists ruled that Edmund was legally sane. This is with keeping his juvenile records in consideration. Edmund admitted to one of them that he was a cannibal, but later recanted that part of his confession.
After deliberating a jury declared Edmund sane and guilty on all charges. This took place on November 8, 1973. He requested for "death by torture." Instead he received 7 years to life for each count to be served concurrently. He was sentenced to serve his time in a California medical facility.
Tumblr media
Edmund shared a prison cell block with several other notorious killers like Herbert Mullin and Charles Manson. He placed into the general population. He was once again considered to be a model prioner. He had many hobbies behind bars, like crafting, reading, and narrating audiobooks. He "retired" in 2015 after suffering from a stroke. He was then declared medically disabled.
Edmund gave many interviews that were eventually used in several different documentaries about his story. He was noted as being intelligent and insightful. When asked why he participated in interviews, Edmund replied, "There's somebody out there that is watching this and hasn't done that-- hasn't killed people, and wants to, and rages inside and struggles with that feeling, or is so sure they have it under control. They need to talk to somebody about it. Trust somebody enough to sit down and talk about something that isn't a crime. Doing it isn't just a crime, it's a horrible thing. It doesn't know then to quit and it can't be stopped easily one it starts."
Edmund was first eligible for parole in 1979, but was denied. He was also denied for the next three years. He waived his right to a hearing in 1985. When he was denied for parole in 1988 he said, "Society is not ready in any shape or form for me. I can't fault them for that." He was again denied for parole in 1991 and 1994. He waived his right to a hearing again in 1997 and 2002. He was denied again in 2007. He waived his right again in 2012, and was denied again in 2017. He won't be up for parole again until 2024.
