Anyways could it be like reader never knew kyo could turn into a cat, so when he sees kyo turn into a cat and just instantly feels his heartstrings tug. He starts cuddling with kyo's cat from till he turns back into his human form, but reader didn't know he becomes naked when he turns back so he starts freaking out about it lol.

I'm sorry if I butcher this shit up and if my English is bad and you don't understand my point. English is my first language but I get very nervous with sending in request so I feel like I butcher shit up lol.

Kyo Sohma x Male Reader

Okay, so, I actually love the thought of queer relationships between the zodiac. It's always been very cute to me, plus it would save them from turning into an animal when they want affection.

Also, for these headcanons, let's just say that trans men/transmascs don't have any effect so that it stays inclusive! (I know Fruits Basket isn't the most trans-inclusive, but we're ignoring that)

Anyway, this would most likely take place before you two start dating. I doubt he'd be the type to commit to a relationship before revealing this part of himself. He's not good at this sort of thing.

So, right now, y'all are just friends. Most likely, you met at school. You're in the same class, or you met through one of his cousins/Tohru.

At first, he avoided you. It had nothing to do with you in particular - he just hates being social. Eventually, you do manage to interact with him, and he decides you're chill enough to be around. So you two become friends.

One day, you, Kyo, Tohru, and Yuki are hanging out outside of school. This is the first time you've hung out with them outside of school, so this is new territory for you. Specifically, the four of you went to the library to study for an upcoming test.

You sat in a back corner, away from everyone else. Tohru had gotten up to go grab a book, but she tripped over the leg of the chair. Kyo was sitting next to her, and he's the one she falls into. Suddenly, there's a puff of smoke, and when it clears, you see Tohru holding an orange cat, and Kyo is nowhere to be seen.

Tohru and Yuki look panicked, and you're confused. The two of them scramble to come up with some kind of explanation, but all you can think about is how adorable the cat is. You assume it's Kyo, although you couldn't explain what happened.

Tohru had put Kyo down by this point, and he walks across the table to get to you. His eyes have the same deadpan look they usually do, which is funnier in his cat form. Sensing no hostility from you, Yuki and Tohru are able to calm down a little bit, and Yuki is able to get a proper explanation out. You process only some of his words, too focused on how cute Kyo looks.

Without much thought, you scoop him up in your arms, gently holding him close. Kyo makes a startled noise, but doesn't struggle too much. Yuki looks amused as he ushers Tohru away, intent on giving you two some alone time.

Kyo asks you what you think you're doing, and you're shocked he can still speak in this form. You shyly explain that you just thought he looked cute, and your body kind of just moved on its own. You go to put him down, but he doesn't budge from your arms. It's barely audible, but you swear you heard him say something about him enjoying the embrace. You chuckle at that as you hold him tighter. If you listen closely, you can almost hear him purring softly.

Then, another puff of smoke appears. When it dissipates, you see Kyo standing in front of you, back to his regular human form. Except for the fact that he's completely naked. You turn away, flustered that you saw him in such a state. Kyo also turns around, tripping over himself as he looks for his clothes. Neither of you speak a word, and it's around this time that Yuki and Tohru make their return.

Yuki still looks amused by the situation, choosing to tease Kyo. Tohru is immediately flustered, still not used to seeing the boys after they transform back. As the boys continue fighting, Tohru comes up to you, asking if you're okay. She knows from personal experience that this kind of situation can be startling, so she wants to make sure that you're feeling alright. When you respond in the affirmative, she smiles.

Kyo and Yuki stop bickering, and Kyo is fully dressed once again. He can't quite make eye contact with you, but he does apologize for what happened, if in his own tsundere way. You laugh a bit, explaining that you're fine, just a bit shocked at what just happened. The three nod, as they can all understand how you feel.

By this point, none of you are in the mood for studying anymore, so you decide to pack up for the night. As you walk out of the library, you turn away from them, as your home is in the opposite direction of where they live. However, you feel something grab your hand, and when you turn to look, you see Kyo. He's still not making eye contact, and his face is a little red, but his grip on your hand is strong.

Quietly, he asks if he can walk you home. You're shocked, and you can hear Tohru cheering in the background as Yuki tries to silence her. After a moment to recover from the shock, you smile and him and squeeze his hand, accepting his offer. He makes eye contact with you for the first time since the incident, and you can see a small smile appear on his face. He tells the others that he'll meet them at home, and you're on the way to your house.

As you walk, Kyo explains everything in as much detail as he can. He leaves out all of his family drama, as that's a story for another day, but he does bring up his curse and how it works. You jokingly remark that he wouldn't transform with you, since you're both boys, and he laughs a bit at that. He gestures to your hands, still interlocked, and states that even holding hands with a girl would cause him to transform. That makes you laugh as well.

Soon you're back home, and he drops you off at your door. He squeezes your hand one last time before letting it go, and he asks if you'd like to hang out again, to which your agree. You do make one more sly comment about wanting to see him as a cat again, telling him that he looked oh so adorable. He groans, but it's all in good humor. He leaves, already thinking of plans for next time.

The two of you don't start dating right away. It takes more time, but this is the first major step. Also, he's willing to be more affectionate with you because he knows he won't transform. It's nothing more than hand-holding on leaning against you for right now, but when you do start dating, he gets very clingy, especially in public.

You don't get to see him transform that often since you don't cause any of his transformations, but when you do get to see it, it's always a treat. He gets so flustered when he transforms, and it worsens when he transforms back to human. You've gotten used to the nakedness after the first few times, but he never quite does, especially when you're around. It's cute.

Would it be possible to request a male Kyo Sohma reader (for the Remarried Empress) who's a (begrudgingly) visiting Prince sent with his cousin Yuki (who, also begrudgingly, acts as his secretary despite being a Prince as well) to gain favor of The Emperor during the New Year Ceremony. The Empress catches Reader's eye (platonically, since he's already interested in someone from his country) and they form a bond.

He's outraged on her behalf (though he can't really act on it) but offers to gather any information she may need, even dragging his cousin into it as well. Her Majesty finds herself getting letters from an orange cat and a pretty silver rat.

A small time issue ends up with the cat being exposed as Reader being the cat who admits to it being a pretty risky idea to begin with.

(I don't know where I was trying to go with this, I was mostly wondering about the cast's reaction to such a strange pair)

Preface: You are originally from this world and not isekai’d. You are the Crowned Prince of the Southern Kingdom (completely made up place), sent by your family to go gain the favor of the Emperor of the Eastern Empire.

Sovieshu

Even before you met the Emperor, you were still pretty disgusted that he had the audacity to take up a mistress. You didn’t do anything to hide your distaste for this action either, and would announce it to the world if you could. Unfortunately, your family was counting on you to make a good impression.

The second you laid eyes on His Imperial Majesty, bile started to rise. You didn’t hide it either, much to the dismay of your cousin. But, you used your charisma to win over the nobility of the Eastern Empire. They all felt the same way you did, and they told you about it.

Then, you made eye contact with Her Imperial Majesty, and you felt an instant connection. It wasn’t love, but rather two souls who know how to hide their true selves have found each other. So, you decided that the only logical thing to do was to go talk to Navier, and the conversation was really relaxing for the two of you.

Sovieshu was absolutely angry that his wife was conversing with another man, especially a man who had high authority in a different region of the world. It didn’t matter if the two of you weren’t romantically interested in each other, the fact that you had the audacity to converse with his wife while they were going through a rough patch was frustrating for him.

When it was revealed that you were the cat who assisted in delivering letters from Heinrey to his wife, he would have ordered your execution had you been one of his subjects. Unfortunately, because you were the Crowned Prince of the Southern Kingdom, which was an ally to the Empire, you were spared (albeit hesitantly).

Rashta

Honestly, you couldn’t really blame Rashta for being thrust into the life of a mistress since it was all Sovieshu’s fault for making that decision. That doesn’t mean you liked her though. It was like if someone tried to take Tohru’s place in the palace. The thought alone made your blood boil.

The moment you saw the new mistress, a hairball was rising in your throat. How could she be so happy knowing that she’s only in the palace for the Emperor’s pleasure? It’s not like any nobles actually liked her. Plus, she smelled of filth covered with different perfumes.

Rashta saw how you went straight to the Empress and struck up a conversation between yourself, her, and your cousin, and she was incredibly jealous. You were doing it on purpose too, all under the guise of ‘preparing the concubine for what is going to happen both in the castle and outside of the castle’.

She could see that Sovieshu was getting increasingly angry at you talking to Navier, and she was angry that his attention was off of her. She wanted you out of the Empire, but it was way out of her jurisdiction because not only were you there for the party, you were there for the regulation of trade between the Eastern Empire and Luipt as well. Basically, you were there for political affairs she couldn’t mess with.

When your identity as the cat was revealed, she didn’t know how to feel. It’s not like you were trying to hide it, but she’s just so naive that she didn’t even notice you disappearing for times on end to see a cat roaming around in your absence.

Navier

You had received a personalized invitation on behalf of Her Imperial Majesty of the Eastern Empire, stating that you were welcome to an extended stay in the palace to act as ambassador to the Southern Kingdom dealing with the trade routes between your kingdom and the Empire as well as Luipt.

However, the minute you saw Navier, you could sense that she was upset. So you went to go talk to her, ditching all proper etiquette that your cousin had talked you through. It was a pleasant surprise for her, and you both got to learn a lot about each other. You heard that Sovieshu hadn’t even asked for permission before bringing Rashta into the palace, and that made you unbelievably angry.

To distract herself from the pain, she asked why an eligible bachelor such as yourself attended the party with your cousin rather than a date, and the conversation turned into you spilling tea about Tohru. Navier wished you the best of luck in your romantic pursuit of the girl. That night, she became an older sister figure to both you and Yuki.

But, when she went back to her bedchambers, she was a bit suspicious upon finding a cat and a rat ‘conversing’ with each other and seemingly understanding one another. She didn’t piece everything together, but when Queen wasn’t allowed to fly in, you used your cat form to bring in letters.

When it was revealed that you were the cat who delivered her the letters, she hugged you. A few tears definitely did slip, but then she scolded you for being so reckless with your life.

Heinrey

Your Kingdoms were in an alliance with one another, and that’s how you both knew each other. The two of you were Crowned Princes who were acting as representatives of the Kingdoms you hailed from at Navier’s party. But, the two of you didn’t always get along. It wasn’t until Tohru came into your life that you really established a friendship with Heinrey.

Mans was partnering with your cousin to try and get you to hide your obvious disgust at His Imperial Majesty, but you always wore your emotions on your sleeve. Plus, you weren’t doing anything too bad. You just kept shooting death glares at Sovieshu.

Heinrey was definitely jealous when you started a conversation with Navier, but he was glad that it seemed platonic rather than you just trying to woo her. You even introduced the two, and gave him a thumbs up from the side of the ballroom as they danced. You best believe that you were one of the groomsmen at their wedding.

Anyways, during the time where any birds sent to Navier would be shot down as declared by Sovieshu, you wrote to Heinrey and offered your help. You would use your cat form to sneak in and deliver the letters yourself so that open lines of communication between the couple could continue. You can consider yourself a hero. We salute you, soldier 🫡

i just got done finishing this last night and its really good. i'm impressed considering live actions don't follow the anime,and/or they aren't good.

SPOILERS for both the anime and the live action

the differences are

1. they car crashes at the aquarium instead of after the aquarium 2. they don't go to the aquarium for the suit. they do get the super hero suit at the end,but that's not why they go there. they go there because of the fish 3. Shizuka and Kenichiro don't get to add onto the book until the very end of the movie 4. they do things in the book that aren't in the anime. for instance they do water yoga and paragliding 5. they don't ever see akira's parents,and/or his hometown 6. u never learn about shizuka's past with her father or why she wants to become a doctor in the first place 7. Yukari and Beatrix aren't in the movie at all. which is a shame as i enjoyed both the characters.

oh i watched it in english so it had voice over ppl. i didn't really recognize anyone but 2 ppl. they're might be more,but i only heard 2.

the first one is stephen fu is Kenichirou . (a.k.a. alice from welcome to demon school,tohru's male cousin from fruits basket,all for ones brother in MHA,jamie from street fight3r$,and joey from 3on3) the second one is Todd Haberkorn voices Gonzo Kosugi. which was weird hearing him voice the bad guy as i rarely ever hear him voice the bad guys in anime/videogames. the only other time i heard him voice a bad guy was in akiba's b34t as kanon.(a.k.a hikaru from ouran,natsu from fairy tail,Hiroshi in MHA,Teruteru from danganronpa both the anime and the game, and razor from gehnshin impact)

if u watched the anime and liked the anime,and ur ok with live actions i highly recommend giving it a try. because even though i didn't know a lot of voice actors and even though some things aren't the same as in the anime i still enjoyed it.

now if u do watch it in english some of the lipping isn't synced perfectly. other than that,that's the only flaw i have with the movie,besides the things they changed from the anime. but yeah plz give it a try^^.

Request: Can you do a Hatsuharu soulmate UA One shot where whatever your soulmate writes on themselves shows up on the other’s skin?

A/N: It’s a soulmate AU so I’m gonna make up a rule that soulmates are exempt to the zodiac curse rules.

Also, because I’m biologically female, I automatically write the reader with female pronouns unless otherwise specified. I’m more than happy to write male or gender-neutral readers, I just need to know beforehand.

Words: 1,904

It began on the first day of the school year. You were seated in math class, groaning under your breath as you struggled to scribble down notes as quickly as the teacher spoke. Math was your worst subject, so you had notebook upon notebook filled with equations and long answers. The teacher announced an upcoming test, and you poised your hand over your notes, preparing to jot down a reminder. A glance at your notebook, however, prompted you to write the reminder on your wrist instead. Your once brand-new notebook was flooded with homework and practice tests – you’d lose the reminder entirely if you added it to the chaos. So you held the pen to your non dominant wrist and marked it down.

Math test. Friday. STUDY.

The class eventually ended, and you all but sprinted out to the hallway. One more class and school would be over for the day. You made a stop at your locker to deposit your math book and piles of notes, and writing on your wrist caught your eye. But it wasn’t what you had written.

Huh? What math test?

A shriek fell from your lips before you could contain it. Clasping a hand over your mouth, you slid down against the lockers until you were seated on the floor, staring at your wrist in shock. You understood the culprit immediately, but until now, it had always sounded like a distant dream, not an eventual reality.

Soulmates. Once the younger of the two soulmates begins high school, soulmates can communicate with one another via writing on their skin with ink.

“(y/n)? Are you alright?”

You glanced up from your wrist to find Tohru standing beside you, her eyes wide and head tilted with concern. When you didn’t reply, she crouched down beside you, her gaze landing on your skin.

“Oh! You got your soulmate!”

You nodded numbly. “I didn’t expect it. I’ve met soulmates before but it didn’t seem real until now.”

“You’re a second year, right?” Tohru inquired. “Your soulmate must be younger than you.”

“That’s alright,” you countered. “I wonder if they go to school here.”

“That would be so exciting!” the brunette squealed. “Oh! You’re coming over for Yuki’s birthday party this weekend, right?”

You offered her a nod. “Yeah, I’ll be there. I even got him a present.”

“Aw, he’ll be so bashful,” she giggled. “He hates being the center of attention.”

“Will more of the Sohma clan be there?” you questioned, rising to your feet in preparation for your final class. “That family is so fascinating; I’d love to meet more of them.”

The brunette nodded excitedly as she walked alongside you down the hallway. “Not very many, I don’t think, but a few more will be there! Kagura for sure; she’s always looking for a reason to visit Kyo. Momiji too, and with Momiji comes Hatsuharu.”

You couldn’t understand or describe the tingling that grasped your heart at the sound of Hatsuharu’s name, but it stopped you in your tracks for a second. Tohru was oblivious as she rambled on about how adorable Momiji was, and you let her talk while you lost yourself in thought.

Saturday afternoon found you standing outside the Sohma house, neatly wrapped present in one hand as you lifted the other to knock on the door. It slid open to reveal Shigure, the cousin who acted more like an annoying older brother to Yuki and Kyo.

“Ah, (y/n)! So glad you could make it. Yuki won’t know what to do with the attention of so many pretty girls!”

“Hey, Shigure,” you giggled, stepping around him and into the house. You heard the door close behind you as you ventured into the family room where everyone was gathered around the kotatsu.

“Hey, (y/n)!” Tohru greeted eagerly, and you offered her a smile in return.

“(y/n),” Yuki smiled softly. “Thank you for coming.”

“I wouldn’t miss it,” you countered before holding up his gift. “Where should I put this?”

Tohru gestured to a pile of presents in the corner of the room. “Over there!”

With a nod, you followed her arm, adding your gift to the collection. You then took a seat beside her at the kotatsu, observing the game of cards the group was playing. Kyo was grumbling about how he was going to win, while Yuki argued that he had won every game thus far.

“Are the other Sohmas here yet?” you questioned, turning your attention to Tohru.

Before the brunette could reply, the front door was shoved open, alerting to the presence of the newcomer. In stormed Kagura, whose angry face softened upon catching sight of Kyo. The ginger in question rose to his feet, glaring at the brunette.

“Hey, Kagura!” you greeted. You’d met her briefly before, but you hadn’t gotten much of a chance to speak to her. She offered you a wave before latching onto Kyo like a lost lover, clinging to his arm as he gave in and returned to his seat.

“He’s gotten softer,” you commented to Tohru.

She giggled in response. “He discovered that letting Kagura hang all over him keeps her calm, and keeps her from destroying the house.”

You hummed in acknowledgement, turning your gaze back to the door as it opened once more. The first presence to greet your eye was the most adorable little blond you’d ever seen. His energy level matched that of a toddler as he bounded around the room, offering hugs and greetings.

“Momiji!” Tohru cheered upon the blond’s arrival. “Momiji, this is (y/n). She’s a friend from school.”

Momiji beamed at you as though he wanted to lunge, but he was held back by a hand on his shoulder. Your gaze followed the hand to a tall boy with black-and-white hair, and you’re fairly certain your heart stopped. That tingling in your chest from the other day resurfaced, but you shook your head, instead focusing on being a polite guest.

“(y/n), this is Hatsuharu,” Tohru added.

“It’s nice to meet you both,” you offered with a nod of your head. Momiji was practically vibrating where he stood, his eyes darting between you, Tohru, and Hatsuharu.

"Tohru?” he questioned sweetly.

The brunette nodded. “She knows.”

Momiji released the loudest squeal before breaking free from Hatsuharu’s hold and lunging towards you. You managed to catch him before you fell backward, looking down at the figure in your arms. Rather than the small boy he’d been before, in your arms sat a soft, yellow rabbit. You cooed quietly at him, stroking his ears, while Tohru giggled beside you.

“Momiji doesn’t care much for the rules,” Hatsuharu grumbled.

“He just likes to hug,” Tohru countered.

“I don’t mind at all,” you giggled, watching as Momiji snuggled further into your embrace. You then glanced up at the two-toned boy. “Which zodiac are you, then?”

He grinned. “Take a guess.”

You tilted your head, eyes raking over his figure, using the challenge as an excuse to check him out. Black and white hair, piercings, punk aesthetic, cocky attitude… “The cow?”

His grin widened. “Nicely done, sweetheart.”

Your heart lurched at the compliment and the pet name, but you kept it to yourself. Tohru nudged your side with her elbow, eying the blush dusting your cheeks.

“(y/n)!” Momiji chirped, bounding up to your side, though not close enough to touch. “Can I draw on you?”

The group was in the middle of watching a movie, though side conversations and snacking was also taking place, so Momiji wasn’t being too disruptive.

You offered him a shrug. “I don’t see why not.”

He squealed in triumph and took a pack of pens from his coat pocket. He made himself comfortable beside you as you offered him your left arm, careful not to lean in too close and risk changing his form. He hummed softly to himself as he worked, often switching colors, and you closed your eyes and simply enjoyed the soothing sensations against your skin.

“Huh?” came Hatsuharu’s voice after a few minutes. “Where the hell did this come from?”

You opened your eyes to find him staring down at his left arm, confusion furrowing his brows as he rubbed at the pen lines dancing across his skin. Momiji paused his masterpiece to look over at his cousin, gasping loudly when he recognized his own artwork.

“Haru! That’s what I drew on (y/n)!”

Everyone’s attention turned towards the three of you, movie completely forgotten in the background. Yuki’s eyes widened with interest, Kyo’s brow furrowed in feigned disgust, Tohru’s face brightened with excitement. All you could do was stare at the drawing on Hatsuharu’s arm, matching your own, your heart hammering too loudly in your chest for you to lift your gaze and meet his eyes.

“(y/n)?” Haru called, his eyes gaging your reaction. “Can we talk outside?”

You finally looked up at him with a nod. “Yeah, sure.”

Three years later, you found yourself grinning widely as you approached the Sohma house. Shigure opened the door before you could even knock, greeting you with a smile. You had arrived for a birthday party once more, but this time, it wasn’t Yuki’s. Returning Shigure’s smile, you made your way past him and into the family room. Loud voices overlapping one another met your ears as you looked around the room. Yuki and Kyo had matured some over the years, but putting them in the same room for extended periods of time would inevitably lead to an argument. You chuckled at their antics, alerting them to your presence. Hatsuharu looked up at you from his place on the floor, his cognac eyes widening and his lips splitting into a grin.

“You’re here!”

He rose to his feet in a split second, crossing the room to take you in his arms. You giggled softly as you returned his embrace, wrapping your arms around his neck. The gift bag containing his present dangled from your fingers, and the tissue paper poking out of the opening caught his eye as he released you.

“What did you get me?” he inquired, taking the bag from your hands and tearing out the paper.

“Idiot!” Kyo chided loudly. “You’re supposed to open all of the presents, not just (y/n)’s!”

You only laughed as your boyfriend finally found the small black box at the bottom of the bag, all of its wrapping now piled on the floor. He opened it to find a half-pendant in the shape of a cow head inside a heart on a silver chain, and he met your gaze with a quirked brow.

You pulled at the identical chain around your own neck, revealing the other half of the cow pendant.

His grin grew impossibly wider as he tore the necklace out of its confines (which also ended up on the floor) and reached around his neck to clasp the chain in place.

“I love it!” He then took you in his arms once more. “And I love you!”

“I love you, too,” you giggled, pulling him in for a passionate kiss. He tilted his head to deepen the kiss, his hands grasping at your hips while yours locked behind his head. A chorus of noises sounded around you- cheers, coos, grumbles of disgust- but it was all white noise as Hatsuharu held you.

You grinned up at him as he pulled back long enough for you to take a breath. “Happy birthday, babe.”

Rin and Hatsuharu fell in love with her way of always falling yet always rising.

With the time, Rin and Haru decided to include (Y/n) into their relationship.

Now it was harder to hide their relationship due Akito, but they’d take the risk.

Since the pair has been sexually active since so young, they include (Y/n) in their activities.

(Y/n) never expected her first time to being taken by both male and female.

It was a bit difficult due Haru’s curse, but they somehow managed.

(Y/n) didn’t knew whether to feel good for having two lovers or guilty for how good sex was.

Rin and Haru can no longer live without (Y/n).

Haru and (Y/n) attended the same school, so Haru always flirts with her in front everyone.

(Y/n) loved Tohru’s kindness, she was like her mom.

When Rin fell from the second floor, things got complicated.

She broke up with Haru and (Y/n), it was enough that Akito knew about her with Haru, if Akito founds out about their relationship with (Y/n), Rin may die.

Taking courage, (Y/n) did her best to help Tohru and Rin to break the curse and confront Akito.

(Y/n)’s willing to sacrifice her happiness for others.

After the curse broke, Rin and Haru got happy and (Y/n) cried of joy.

Honda Tohru and the Strength of Nurturing

Spoilers for Fruits Basket

Back in the ‘00s, in their quest for more gender non-conforming, strong female characters, much of fandom pushed aside heroines who they deemed to be too “girly”. Female characters who put their energy into caring for others, rather than standing up and fighting, were dismissed as passive doormats who exist only for the male cast’s development. One such character was Tohru Honda, the heroine of the classic shoujo manga and anime Fruits Basket. The first part of the remake has made it abundantly clear that Tohru is plenty strong; however, since her strength comes in the form of traditionally feminine roles such as nurturing and protecting those dear to her, audiences tend to disregard her strength because of how these roles are devalued.

Fruits Baskets’ set up does resemble that of a typical reverse harem. Tohru Honda has been living alone in a tent after her mother dies, and finds she’s unwittingly been trespassing on the property of her classmate Yuki Sohma and his cousin. Rather than kicking her to the curb, the Sohmas invite her to live with them, offering her free room and board in exchange for her cooking and cleaning for them. Not long after moving in, she discovers that members of the Sohma family, including her new housemates, are cursed to turn into animals of the Chinese zodiac when embraced by members of other sexes. One by one, she meets and bonds with the mostly-male zodiac members.

The misreading of Tohru as a doormat comes from a combination of genre awareness and gendered expectations. The main characters of so-called “reverse harems”, in which a female protagonist is surrounded by handsome male suitors, tend to be passive and accept whatever abuse comes their way, while the male characters are more active and drive the storyline. Compared to the fantastical and allegorical circumstances of the Sohmas, Tohru’s own situation – recently orphaned and homeless because of her self-sacrificing nature – seems positively prosaic by comparison. The true nature of her strength only becomes clear after pulling back that top layer of expectations and actively engaging with the material.

Fruits Basket Season 1 Reviews

I just want to start this review by saying that this is a very subjective review of the season. This is my personal opinion about the show and I hope whoever reads it enjoys it.

The Story

The whole Sohmas being possessed by Chinese Zodiac animals main plotline is interesting and intriguing. I liked the idea of it from the beginning and honestly, it just kept getting better with each passing episode. As someone who grew up in the Balkans, I have little knowledge about the Chinese Zodiac. I’ve known for years that I was born in the year of the Rabbit, but I was always more interested in my other zodiac sign (I’m a Sagittarius). Either way, I’m enjoying the plotline and it was clear by the end of the season, that’s only to get better from now on.

As for the Sohma family, they’re messed up, to say the least. Of course, I enjoyed it and I want to see more of this family dynamic in the next season. I’m really curious to see more of Akito and his relationship with the family, specifically Yuki. What really bothers me is the whole incestuous feeling I get from the family. Kagura’s crush on Kyo made me cringe so bad, but not only because of the incest, the girl clearly doesn’t know a thing about boundaries. Other than the incest, I loved it.

The Characters

Tohru: I loved Tohru. It’s refreshing to see the main character that is so bubbly, loving, caring and optimistic. Her backstory was somehow heartbreaking and heartwarming to see at the same time. It’s always good to see characters have good relationships with their parents, especially girls with their moms. The girl is trying her best and she deserves the world with what she’s been going through. My only drawback with her is that she doesn’t seem to have flaws. I get that where her character comes and why she is such a good person (I love that of her) but honestly, it gets a bit repetitive to watch. If it continued to be like this, I think the refreshment I feel from her character would vanish and I will start seeing her as boring.

Yuki: I enjoyed his character a lot. I loved the whole ‘Prince Charming’ thing he has going on. I’m a sucker for characters who are idealized by their peers to the point that they play that part to hide their true self (I literally wrote a character similar to Yuki). He had character progression as the season went on as he started to open up to people, let himself laugh and generally enjoy his life. I’m interested to see his relationship with Akito and what exactly happened to him those years. Akito (he can fight me) abused him during his childhood and most of his issues stem from that. Hopefully, in season two, I’ll get to see more of this.

Kyo: The star of the season. There is no doubt in my mind that he’s my favourite character so far. From the beginning when he was revealed to be the cat of the Zodiac, I knew that I would be interested in his story. An outsider story is something that I always gravitate towards to and his story got me hooked. Did I expect him to have a true form? No. Did I love it? Absolutely. It was obvious that he was keeping a big secret from Tohru, but man, I didn’t expect that. I gasped when he turned to his true form. I loved the scene where Tohru admitted that she is scared by his true form, but still, wanted to be by his side. The best scene of the season and I’m looking forward to seeing how this storyline progresses. Also, his backstory made me sad and I want to hug Kazuma for taking care of him.

As for the love triangle, I want to say that it’s written very well. The season has ended and I still don’t know if I’m team Yuki or Kyo. Usually, with love triangles, I immediately take a side and I’m annoyed for the rest of the way. However, with these three, I’m curious to see where it goes. What helps is that the love triangle is the main plotline of the show.

Shigure: I desperately want to know more about him. He gives me ‘morally ambiguous’ vibes. I want to see what his goal is and why is he using Tohru to achieve it. There were a few hints here and there, but I want to know more. I want to know all of it. I’m also interested to know more about his relationship with Akito because I’m sure in one episode he said that Akito reaped what he sowed while on the other, he said that he’s doing everything forhim. I have no idea where his intention lies when it comes to Akito. I don’t even know if he’s using Tohru for the ‘greater good’ or for a horrible end-goal.

Hatori: Man, Hatori took me off guard from his first appearance, personality and backstory. First, he was a very attractive man. I do tend to have a thing for dark-haired male characters and Hatori was no exception. However, that’s not the most interesting part of him. At first, he appeared stoic, serious and cold and unsurprisingly, we saw that he was a very kind and gentle person. His insistence that the Zodiacs shouldn’t be loved or love anyone, was upsetting to see. He just seemed like he had totally given up on living for himself and is just living for others. It’s explained beautifully through his relationship with Kana and its abrupt end. Btw, fuck Akito for doing what he did.

Akito: This asshole... For most of the season, he was a looming presence, yet you could feel that he wasn’t a good presence for any of the Sohmas. It seemed like most of them had their grievances with her for good reasons. What he did to Yuki, Hatori and Kisa was horrible. You could see the trauma that he caused Yuki by just that scene between them. He was terrified by Akito and it’s not surprising from the short flashbacks we’ve got. Can’t wait to learn more about him and for some sweet karma to hit him on the face.

I’m went into more detail about the characters I found the most interesting in this story. Of course, I liked a lot of them like Mumiji (he’s my Zodiac). He was such a fun character and his relationship with his family was heart-wrenching to see. I was tearing up alongside Tohru. Hatsu was fine, nothing special. Uo and Hana were lovely and rich characters, both of their backstories were pleasant to me. Their friendship with Tohru is precious. Honestly, I didn’t like Kagura. I’ve grown tired of violent female characters who know no boundaries and I quickly grew tired of her. I’m sure I would like her way more if she stops having a crush on Kyo. Kisa and Hiro were cute characters as well. (again, it’s so weird that he loves her. They are cousins). Ayame was hilarious to watch and I can’t wait to find out more about Ritsu.

Season 2

I can’t wait to start the second season tomorrow. I urgently need to know more about the Zodiac and the Sohma family dynamic. I desperately want to know Shigure’s true intention, Yuki’s relationship with Akito and to find out how this family got cursed in the first place. I can’t wait to properly meet Rin (As a big fan of Rin Tohsaka, I can’t wait to get to know this Rin as well). Maybe this season I will pick a team when it comes to the love triangle.

Yuki wasn’t sure what happened. One day he was hanging out normally with Tohru, playing card games and eating lunch, and the next she was scurrying away from him in the halls. Had he done something to offend her? Was he annoying her, spending so much time with her group of friends? Did he smell ?

Uotani and Hanajima noticed—of course they did, they’d been on high alert since the tent incident—but made no mention of it to Yuki. This, shockingly, did nothing to alleviate his worry.

Before, they’d chat in the mornings before class, sit together to eat lunch, and then sometimes hang out after school, whether to walk home or to Tohru’s job or to a convenience store to get drinks. But now she made excuses to skip lunch, arrived to class late and left as soon as the bell rang. Yuki thought he was going to lose his mind as he obsessively thought of anything and everything he could have done to hurt her.

This went on for a whole week before Uotani and Hanajima cornered Yuki by the lockers as he prepared to go home.

“Have you noticed anything...off about Tohru lately?” Uotani asked, arms folded defensively across her chest. She reflexively looked over her shoulder as a few chattering girls passed.

“Off?” Yuki asked. He dropped his shoes to the floor and pulled off one of his uwabaki . “She has been avoiding me, but I’m not sure what I did to offend her.”

Uotani nodded. “At first I thought you just did something stupid and Tohru was being too nice to tell us about it, but now...she’s acting really shifty around us, too.”

With a sigh, Yuki slipped on his shoes. “Have you tried talking to her about it?”

“Yes,” Hanajima replied. “She denies anything is wrong. But she’s lying.”

“Do you think…?” Yuki paused, unsure how to verbalize his thoughts delicately.

Uotani, however, had no such qualms. “That she’s being mistreated by her family? Yeah.”

“She doesn’t say much about her aunt and oldest cousin,” Hanajima said grimly, face not showing a hint of emotion. “She says very kind things about her grandpa, and sometimes her cousin, Kaoru. But the other two...I don’t trust them.”

“Do you think they’re...hurting her?” Yuki asked, alarmed. His hands began to shake involuntarily, so he gripped tighter at his satchel.

“I don’t think so,” Uotani said with a sigh. “Not, like, physically. But Tohru’s too nice, I think they’re taking advantage of that. She’s so good at cooking and cleaning, those rat bastards probably think she owes them and makes her do all the chores, even though she’s got school and work and stuff! Kids shouldn’t have to earn a place to live, you know? Not from their families.”

“They shouldn’t,” Yuki said softly. “But she may feel she has to.”

Uotani huffed with dark laughter and shook her head. “You may not’ve known Tohru long, but you’re spot-on with that, Prince . Fuck!” Uotani kicked one of the lockers, hands in her hair. “Should I just kidnap her? Force her to live with me n’ Pops and refuse to let her do any chores ever ?”

“My parents would love to have her back with us,” Hanajima said simply. “They think it’s refreshing to have such a hardworking young person in the house. Megumi and I lack motivation.”

Yuki couldn’t say it to them, but he knew of a household that desperately missed Tohru’s presence, a place where she’d had her own room and was free to be herself. She’d insisted on doing the cooking and the cleaning, but only because Shigure had convinced her not to pay rent. She hadn’t just been good for the Sohmas in that house; Yuki truly believed they’d been good for her, too.

“Perhaps...we should have a word with her grandfather,” Yuki suggested. “Without Tohru present.”

Uotani’s eyes lit up. “Oh, now there’s an idea. You really are more than just a pretty face.”

Yuki huffed and gave Uotani an unimpressed look. She laughed and slapped his shoulder, far more aggressively than he anticipated.

“You will be a valuable asset in the future,” Hanajima agreed. “Let’s discuss this further tomorrow.”

“Yeah, yeah, we can figure out the details later.” Uotani waved at Yuki. “See ya later!”

“Later…” Yuki parroted, feeling a little overwhelmed. Uotani and Hanajima were never not overwhelming, but he felt he’d grown closer to them lately, so their loud personalities felt more amusing than grating. He could see what Tohru loved about them.

Feeling lighter than he had all day, Yuki began his long walk home. Tomorrow would be different. Tomorrow...

Tohru was still avoiding him the next day. Uotani shot him a concerned grimace as Tohru made an excuse to not eat lunch with them that day, but Yuki wasn’t having it. As she scurried away from Hanajima, Yuki followed, rushing out of the classroom without a word. It was one thing to avoid him , but for Tohru to avoid her two closest friends? Yuki was putting an end to it.

“Honda, please!” He called as she turned a corner. “Wait up!”

He could hear her footsteps grow faster, so he broke into a sprint. Tohru was many things, but fast was not one of them.

Yuki caught up to her in the stairwell, halfway up to the third floor. He grabbed her hand, nearly tripping them both in the process, but he was willing to do anything to get Tohru to stop .

“ Please,” he panted, squeezing tightly at her hand. “Honda, please, whatever I did, I’m sorry. Please don’t avoid your friends because of me. Please .”

“What?” Tohru’s voice was small and shaky. “I-I’m not avoiding anyone, I’m just- busy! I promise.”

“Honda…” Yuki let go of her hand. “We’ve all noticed. Uotani and Hanajima are really worried about you. I’m worried about you. So if I did something, please just tell me and I’ll go away, I won’t ever talk to you again-”

“No!” Tohru covered her mouth. “I mean...you didn’t do anything, Sohma. I...I can’t tell you what’s wrong. But it’s not something you did, I don’t think…”

“You don’t...think…?” Yuki narrowed his eyes. “Honda, please, tell me what’s wrong.”

“I-I...I have photos,” Tohru whispered, curling in on herself until her hair draped in front of her face, blocking her from Yuki’s view. “Photos of...us.”

Yuki, for the life of him, could not recall taking a selfie with Tohru, nor were Hana and Uo the type to snap candids of their friends while hanging out. The only people who ever took his picture were the girls from the fan club…

His heart skipped a beat. “Is someone harassing you?” He asked, leaning in closer. “For...for being friends with me?”

“No! No, it’s not that,” Tohru scrambled, still hiding her face from him. “M-my aunt hired a private detective to follow me, before I moved in with them, and he- he took photos of me. Of us.”

“They what? ” Yuki’s frown deepened. “Your family doesn’t approve of...friends? Male friends? Is that it?”

“Sohma.” The seriousness of her tone made Yuki’s blood run cold. She looked up at him, eyes red and swollen, looking distraught. It was devastating.

“Honda…” Yuki leaned back, realizing he’d encroached so far into her personal space, their noses had nearly touched.

Tohru took a deep, shuddering breath and said, “I don’t remember it. Any of it. There are pictures of us walking home, going to the store...and Kyo is in them, too, and I don’t remember ever seeing him outside school, but there are pictures and- and I know it’s me and you and him in the pictures but how ? How could all these pictures exist? How could they exist and I don’t- I don’t remember...we weren’t even friends then, when I was living in the tent.”

Emotions crashed like waves in Yuki’s chest, battering his ribs like ships upon rocks. He was relieved and horrified and distraught and elated all at once, heart clenching at the dark circles under Tohru’s eyes, the sickly pallor from all the nights she must have stayed awake thinking she’d gone mad. He wanted nothing more, in that moment, than to be able to take her hand and tell her nothing was wrong. But he couldn’t; Yuki refused to lie to her.

“What if I told you…” he said slowly. “That people’s memories could be suppressed?”

Tohru’s lips parted in a shocked oh . “Sohma, what do you mean?”

“There are people in my family, who have studied the art of memory suppression,” he continued carefully. “It’s something they have to implement when...outsiders learn our secret.”

“You’re not making any sense,” Tohru whispered, voice cracking with emotion. “What’s going on?”

“Do you remember living in the tent, all those weeks? Do you remember anything from that time?”

“Yes…” Tohru paused, teeth worrying at her bottom lip. “I remember...it was a little scary at first. There were bugs everywhere and I could hear dogs howling at night. I had to shower and wash my clothes at school, too, but I wasn’t worried because I always had Mom with me. Except when- when…” She swallowed audibly, eyes roving back and forth as she dug further into her memory. “There was...a landslide. Mom- Mom was buried and I couldn’t get her out and then...then everything was okay. Did someone…? I remember...ornaments. I saw Zodiac ornaments set out to dry...at someone’s house? But there wasn’t a cat one, of course there wasn’t, but I was still sad.” She closed her eyes, head clutched in her hands. “There was a garden.”

“A garden?” Yuki’s throat grew tight. “What was in the garden.”

“Leeks,” Tohru responded, and then she laughed. “I don’t know why that’s funny, I’m sorry.”

“It is funny,” Yuki said gently. “Kyo hates them.”

The corner of Tohru’s mouth quirked up. “Sohma...did I learn your family’s secret?” She asked in a hushed whisper.

Yuki nodded, too relieved to speak.

“And...my memories were erased,” she said. Yuki tried to nod again, but instead ducked his head low in shame.

“I-I’m sorry,” he said, hot tears spilling over his cheeks. “I couldn’t stop it. I should’ve tried harder, but I could-couldn’t.”

“It’s okay,” Tohru said, taking Yuki’s hand back in hers. “I know you wouldn’t have done it if it wasn’t important.”

Yuki shook with his tears, sobbing heavily as the relief and terror overcame him after weeks of balancing on a razor’s edge. She knew . She didn’t remember, but she knew .

“So, we were friends, then?” Tohru asked softly. “And then I forgot, and we became friends again?”

“Y-yeah,” Yuki rasped. “You-you said...you asked me if we could still be friends, after you forgot. Th-that’s why I asked to eat lunch with you that day. I wanted us to be friends, like we had been.”

“Thank you,” Tohru said, and her voice sounded almost as watery as his. “Thank you.”

And then she did the one thing Yuki hoped for and feared. She threw her arms around him in a hug. For a brief, bright moment, Yuki relished the warmth of her close to him, the sweet scent of her shampoo, the absolute love that radiated from her like light from the sun.

But then he felt the tell-tale pull of transformation, thick smoke engulfed him, and he plummeted to the ground fast and hard.

Tohru’s gasp was the last thing he heard before everything went black.

After their parents are killed in a plane crash, Ryuuichi and his younger brother Kotarou are taken in by Youko Morinomiya, the stern chairman of an elite academy whose son and daughter-in-law died in the same accident. The Chairman makes it clear that in exchange for being their legal guardians, Ryuuichi must work outside of class hours at the school’s daycare, where Kotarou will stay during the day.

The series tells the story of the daycare children’s antics as well as how the two brothers adapt to their new lives.

4. Fruits basket - comedy romance slice of life

After her mother’s death, Tohru Honda finds herself living with the Sohma family consisting of three cousins: Yuki, the ‘prince charming’ of their high school, Kyo the hot headed, short tempered outcast, and Shigure the mischievous novelist, if not sometimes that of a pervert. Tohru finds out the Sohma family secret that when a member is hugged by the opposite gender or they are tired out, they turn into the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac. Filled with many lovable character and many plot twists along the way, life at the Sohma house will never be the same again.

5. Say I love you - pure shoujo

Friends will only let you down—that is the sad truth Mei Tachibana lives with, ever since she was wrongfully blamed for the death of a class pet by her so-called friends in grade school. Since then, she stays away from people in order to avoid ever being hurt again. However, Mei’s life begins to change drastically when a misunderstanding in high school causes her to encounter popular student Yamato Kurosawa.

Yamato finds her intriguing and insists on being her friend, even though Mei wants nothing to do with him. But when a dangerous situation ends with Yamato kissing Mei to save her from the unwanted attention of a stalker, Mei begins to develop feelings for him. On the heels of her discovery that their feelings are mutual, they start dating and she gains not only a boyfriend, but friends as well. Mei, however, finds it very hard to adapt to this new lifestyle, especially in expressing her true feelings towards Yamato.

6. Yuri on ice - sports

After a disgrace in the Grand Prix Final, Japanese figure skater Katsuki Yuri seeks to retire. Victor Nikiforov, Russian world champion in figure skating is known for his surprises but is feeling stuck when he realises he has no more surprises left. When Yuri dances to Victor’s most famous routine 'Stay Close to Me’ the video is posted online and is seen by Victor. In this moment the Russian world champion decides to move to Japan and become Yuri’s coach. Over the course of various competitions, the two form a powerful bond and see that each other was all they needed to accomplish what both had hoped for.

7. Kyou kara maou - comedy, fantasy adventure with a hint of gayness

Kyou kara Maou! revolves around Yuri Shibuya, your average Japanese teenager. One day, Yuri sees a classmate being harassed by bullies. Thanks to this intervention, his friend is able to escape, but unfortunately Yuri becomes the new target of the bullies in the process and gets his head shoved into a toilet. But instead of water, the toilet contains a swirling portal that sucks him into another world, largely resembling medieval Europe. There, he is told that he will become the next Demon King due to his black hair and black eyes, traits only possessed by the demon’s royal lineage.Yuri’s arrival is met with some skepticism by some of the demons, who view him as unworthy to be their king. However, after Yuri wins a duel by utilizing his magical powers, the demons slowly begin to acknowledge him as their monarch. Yuri must now learn what it takes be a true Demon King, as he tries to keep the peace between demons and humans in this strange new realm.

8. Princess Jellyfish - comedy romance

Ever since her late mother took her to an aquarium when she was young, Tsukimi Kurashita has been obsessed with jellyfish, comparing their flowing tentacles to a princess’s white dress. Now living with five other unemployed otaku women, 19-year-old Tsukimi spends her days as a social outcast dreaming of becoming an illustrator.

However, her life changes forever when one day, a beautiful woman unexpectedly helps her save a jellyfish in a local pet store. From then on, the stranger—confident, fashionable, and the complete opposite of Tsukimi and her roommates—begins to regularly visit the girls’ building. This trendy hipster, though appearing shallow at first, harbours some secrets of her own, starting with the fact that “she” isn’t really a girl at all, but a wealthy male college student named Kuranosuke Koibuchi!

9. Fullmetal Alchemist - adventure, sci fi, dark fantasy

The Elric brothers’ mother is dead and their father has long since abandoned them. Deciding to perform a forbidden human transmutation to bring their mother back, they end up losing their bodies. Now Edward must join the military in order to gain certain alchemical privileges, with his one goal being to restore his brother to his original state. But with war on the horizon it’s only a matter of time before they are both forced to question their morals and ultimately decide the value of human life.

10. The world god only knows - comedy romance

Keima Katsuragi prefers immersing himself in the 2D world, chasing digital girlfriends. However, after answering a mysterious email he finds himself bound by a contract helping the demon Elsie capture 'lost souls’ from the underworld. He must now win over these real-life ladies in order to fill the void in their hearts which these souls have entered, releasing the souls and allowing for their capture. Also to further motivate, if he does not perform this 'duty’ a collar around his neck will explode.
