Does anybody have any solid recommendations for short (or even long) stories that use third person omniscient well, for writers who have never read/written it, but want to get a feel for whether they want to?

Book recommendations for writers. Links for all available books as of last published title (9/1/22).
Some books I've found that I think are a great resource for writers are of the thesaurus series written by Angela Akerman and Becca Puglisi. The books are a collection of emotions (for example as one of the books covers this) and will have a definition of the emotion, physical signs, internal sensations, mental responses, cues for long term, may escalate to..., cues for suppressed, and tips. They are well written and have several examples for the sections. In the Positive Trait Thesaurus, it has examples from literature, films, and TV. There's some tools and resources at the end as well. They are still releasing books with the most recent being published in 9/1/22, which is the Conflict Thesaurus Vol. 2.

For the aspiring novelist: Novelist as a Vocation by Haruki Murikami
After my first novel writing attempt 9 years ago I stayed away from creative writing altogether. That was back in my mid-twenties after years of blogging and short story writing.
James Patterson had just released his Masterclass "James Patterson Teaches Writing" and after working my way through some of the lessons, I decided to try turning one of my sci-fi story ideas into a novel length work.
I now realise that the story lacked substance to go the distance of a novel but at the time I couldn't understand why it was so hard to slow the pace of the story down.
Some stories are just not supposed to be novels.
I had headed straight to the keyboard to flesh out the first chapter but found myself rewriting the same part of the book over and over again.
It was miserable writing and at the time I'd thought to myself "Really, what is the point anyway? It''s not like anyone is going to publish this." Not long after, I launched my first business which took up a lot of my time and creative juices.
So that was that. I put the story aside (I actually have no idea where it went...) and turned my attention to the world of business and marketing.
Despite feeling the tug to write again numerous times, it wasn't until I read this book late last year that I truly understood where I'd gone wrong all those years ago, and what I needed to do differently if I were to turn my attention to writing once again.
Needless to say, "Novelist as a Vocation" by Haruki Murikami was a game changer for me.
Tumblr media
In a nutshell, what Murikami helped me realise was that novel writing was much more about habit, routine, patience and practice than it was about perfect prose, artistic torment and sheer talent.
And contrasting with James Patterson's approach of gathering, planning and structure, Murikami's method of "clocking in and clocking out" to fulfil a quota of written pages each day just made sense for the way I like to work.
Tumblr media
I'm also grateful that I read this book during time away from work whilst traveling and in need of a creative outlet. I'd just wrapped up my business and had been accepted for a new full-time job (a job that would allow me to keep my evenings and weekends free to continue my creative pursuit). So as I read, I began to write and I could understand in my own practice what Murikami was explaining from his experience.
For instance, instead of being in the analytical, research mindset, I found myself adopting a free flow style of words pouring out onto the page. I let the characters appear and make the decisions and began to experience the joy of allowing the story to write itself.
I understand what Murikami means when he talks about being a "faithful scribe" to the events playing out in his mind - that's what writing feels like to me now and it's so much fun!
I have not yet experienced writer's block during writing the first 6 chapters of my new novel (WIP): "Children of the Gods" (@childrenofthegodsau) and I attribute this to what I learnt from this work.
A word of warning though. If you're reading NAAV in the English translation (I cannot speak for the original Japanese or other language translations) you may, like me, find the almost exclusive adoption of the "he" pronoun used for "the novelist" to be incredibly grating.
Occasionally an "or she" is thrown in but sadly there is not a single singular "they" pronoun used throughout the work. If you can get past that (honestly a struggle and distraction for me at many points when reading) there are many gold nuggets to extract from this book.
And of course, whilst there is no such thing as a silver bullet, I do believe that for many aspiring novelists out there, this book is bound to be helpful in one way or the other.
Truly grateful to Murikami for sharing these insights!
Happy Reading!

My WIP´s
Most authors continuously work on different stories, and here are my top 3 for you to dive into. Feel free to share your opinions! What story are you currently working on?
The Disappearance
Status: Currently working on it (will be my debut novel)
Since Janna's sister disappeared, she finds it hard to do anything. She often feels apathetic and paralyzed. When her sister is found dead, one thing is clear for Janna - it will never be the same again. Caught between anger and grief, she tries to find out who would do such a thing to her sister and stumbles upon a secret she could never have imagined. And then there's her past that keeps coming back to her. Could she have changed anything back then
The book could best be described as a "mystery murder," where Janna's grief and how she deals with this feeling take center stage in our society. How does one behave when it feels like everything has been lost?
Themes (TW):
Mental health (panic attacks, depression)
When should one have their life "under control"?
Sexism, homophobia
Grief
Accusation and Judgment
Status: Under revision (This is a very personal book that requires a lot of revision.)
It's about a girl named Nicola who writes letters to her father about her childhood. In these letters, she not only accuses him but also sentences him to death. Feeling oppressed by him for much of her life, she now explains in the letters why she wants to punish him and how.
Themes (TW):
Traumatic childhood (physical and mental abuse)
Mental health
Religion
The Boy and the Cat
Status: In planning (first drafts)
Eliz's parents want to sell the vacation home of his childhood, and Eliz goes through the process of saying goodbye to his childhood. Accompanying him is a talking cat that may or may not exist and a boy who barely remembers his childhood and is a symbolic image of nihilism.
Themes:
Absent parents
How does being a loner affect personality?
Difference between growing up in the city and in the countryside.
Fear of abandonment
Philosophy
Media addiction

I thrifted a green skirt and it fits perfectly besides for the waist. It almost zips up all the way except for like an inch because I have a tummy
I think there's also a button hole but there's no button so I'm not sure
Is there a way to like..fix it to fit better? It goes over my thighs and hips fine :/

As someone who isn't American either, I can understand your frustration. Like you said, people write best what they know and are comfortable with and that shouldn't be condemned in the slightest! But I just wanna read and see other countries getting representation. It's one reason why I love A Tale Of Crowns, and The Golden Rose for example. I love the fact that so many more diverse settings and cultures are coming into the IF-Community, it makes me feel less invisible and it gives me a way to experience a specific culture a bit more instead of just hearing about it💞
^^^
There are so many good diverse cultural IFs now and its great. I'd also like to recommend Eye of the Moon!

ok so im making a playlist for Eira, and trying to make it follow her backstory instead of just following Vibes like i did with Cosmia, so it involves like a specific order for the songs to follow so is anyone up to listening to a about 50 minute long playlist and then letting me know if the songs convey “you and partner got chosen to be head of significant spiritual journey for your home, cannot return until completed, along the journey partner dies and you mourn him and the fact cant return to tell his family, you adopt a pet to help with the grief and continue the journey” and this is all space flavoured as much as it could be?

Tip for broke bookworms:
Get the App Goodreads, it helps so much to organize books into read, currently reading, and want to read- as well as letting you create your own tagging system to further organize your books
Tumblr media
This is my page of Shelves and tags. Here, if I have money for a book, I can go to my 'want to buy tag, and see what books I've seen and made a note of that I want
Or if I want to start a new book, I can see what books I own but haven't started without having to rifle through all my bookshelves
Authors also do giveaways so- take that how you will

psst hey do u have any sdv mod reccs/any tips on how to use them 👀
yeah! so for stardew mods to work you need to first install the smapi api.
you can either do that through their main website or nexus
neither option has any cons theyre just based on preference on how you wanna install it but theyre both completely safe websites.
after you properly install smapi you’ll have to go to nexus which is the main website for all stardew valley mods. you’ll need to make an account to install stuff i believe. you can find a wide range of mods here that serve a lot of different purposes.
if you haven’t used nexus to mod before then as i mentioned before first make an account then once you are looking at a mod make sure to check the requirements first. sometimes mods need other mods to work and you need to install those first. after you checked the requirements you head to the files section and click manual download. after that select slow download then wait for it to install into your files. then you move those files into the stardew mod folder. if thats not clear enough you can find a bunch of tutorial videos on youtube with visuals:)
since you asked for my recs i’ll give you the list of which i actually use all the time.
NPC Map Locations
Tumblr media
- very basic mod. majority of mod users will have this installed and it just shows you on the map where each npc is at at all times.
CJB Cheats Menu & CJB Item Spawner
- these two sorta go hand in hand for me but of course you don’t need to have both installed. this is definitely a play style preference thing but i personally like having these cheats installed for any type of situation that might happen in game that i can’t undo otherwise without them.
- the cheats menu adds a lot more flexibility and well cheats to the game so for instance: infinite health, infinite stamina, give yourself money, instantly increase hearts with whichever npc, always catch every fish, warp locations, change weather, change time, freeze time, and a lot more. this uses the P key to open in game but you can configure that to another bind if you’d like.
- the item spawner is a lot more simple. does what it says and spawns whichever item you want. so basically you can press the i key and it’ll open up a menu with every item in the game and you can spawn in the specific amount you want of something and so forth. simple concept. i mainly use this for when i accidentally sell or gift an item i wasnt intending to and then simply spawn it back in. i also use it for decorating my house:3
Look Up Anything
- this is literally like having the wiki at your disposal at all times in game. extremely helpful for so many reasons especially as i personally always had the wiki open to check for information on items and npcs so having this mod made it a lot quicker of a process. how it works is you simply hover your mouse over whatever you want information on and click f1 and it’ll display all the information about that thing to you! so if you hover over lets say harvey and press f1 it’ll show you a menu with his birthday, his love & like gifts, your hearts with them and how many points till the next heart, etc.
Seasonal Outfits
- this mod puts all the npcs in different outfits for the seasons. its just cute
Elle’s Seasonal Buildings & DaisyNiko’s Earthy Recolor
- the seasonal building allows a lot more variety in structures like farm building and adding holiday decor to npc buildings. simple stuff that can make the game more customized
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- with seasonal buildings you can also install compatible recolors which is what the DaisyNiko’s link is. it’s the recolor i personally use for my main farm when i play. this is because the vanilla game is very saturated and does hurt my eyes so having more chilled out tones helps. you dont need to install the recolor i use or any in fact if you like the natural look of the game but just know the option is there and there’s a multitude of recolors you can use to make the game look different:3
Friends Forever
- no friendship decay because itsa pain in the ass and i have no time to talk to the npcs all day. this is very play style based some people enjoy having to go and ensure they speak to npcs daily im just not the type.
Part of The Community
- creates different ways for you to gain hearts easier and passively
Mailbox Menu & Zilch’s Envelopes
- i really like the letters and the fact you can only read them once bummed me out until i found this mod which adds a whole menu for your mail where you can go back and see all the letters you’ve received. feel like it adds that additional touch and care to the whole mail system in the game.
- then to go along with that menu theres the envelopes mod that customizes it even further and makes all the envelopes of the letters have cute appearances and designs. look at this and tell me that isn’t the best thing you’ve ever seen.
Tumblr media
Honorable Mentions
- Chests Anywhere
- CJB Show Item Sell Price
in conclusion…
I really suggest just taking the time and scrolling through the nexus mods website on your own. they have a specific category for stardew and you can filter it by most popular and see what you find yourself. since everyone plays differently you might find you enjoy the more technical code side and want to change something to do with that or you might just simply wanna change the npc portraits and make them look nicer. theres so many options on how to mod this game and i honestly could go on forever with mod suggestions but at the end of the day its up to you! so hope this helps and i hope you have a fun time modding.

do you have any tips for coloring/rendering? your art always looks so effortless and cool!! you always have the best color palettes.
Tumblr media
aw thanks!! my reccs for making color palettes work is to learn color theory, not merely for understanding color palettes but to understand color values. if you pick a bright red and a bright yellow at the same value on a color wheel they actually don't read the same because of the ways our eyes work
Tumblr media
you'll see a lot of my art is either complementary colors or analogous, including the first paintings above are analogous- green, yellow, orange. Yellow, pink, purple, blue.
the top portrait here is mainly dark teals and in gray scale the red glasses are also a dark value, but because red is so different from the blue/greens it stands out by color alone
Tumblr media
Something I've learned lately is using Color Burn, Linear Burn, or Darken color instead of Multiply for my shadows, set to a very low percentage, esp for pieces where i really want the colors to be dark and rich
Tumblr media
Lastly, when stumped for color palettes take inspiration from nature
