One thing i wish more people would consider when watching shows/reading comics is "if the narrative doesn't treat this seriously, then maybe neither should I"... Obviously there's some nuance to it, but people forget about slapstick and asides to the audience and if I have to see one more person in the year of 2024 claim that "Winry is abusive" for lighthearted wrench visual gags I'm going to lose my mind.

Happy Taskmaster day to all who celebrate!
So, I realized today that there’s a conflict. I discovered last week that a pub around the corner from my house hosts a weekly comedy night for free (I mean, for pay what you can, and I left them some money last week, I’m not a dick, but it still came out much cheaper than buying tickets in an actual comedy club). I went, expecting it to be not great because it’s a free comedy night in a pub, but it greatly exceeded those very low expectations. And I was later informed, by someone who knows about these things (and is my brother), that despite appearances it’s not just an open night or anything, it’s where a lot of good comics go to work out material, it’s the best comedy night in the city outside of actual clubs, which cost actual money. And it’s on every week, right near me, so that’s fucking exciting.
I first learned about this night because I Googled comedy in my area, to see if there was anything cheap and convenient that would get me out of the house. Comedy has been a very good escapist coping mechanism in the last few years, to get through the time when we were supposed to disengage with the physical world around us. But in the most recent year it’s become increasingly clear that it’s worked too well, I’ve become so completely emotionally invested in this, and the real world that I tried to go back to was all different and complicated and I didn’t fit into it anymore, so it was too easy to just continue to put all my emotional investment into the thing that had been working for several years.
The drawback to that is, you know, being completely disengaged from the actual world around you is not a good thing. I’ve been working on that, I get pretty depressed at times about how it’s been slow going, but then I think of where I was a year ago, when being out for an hour seemed like a Herculean task, and I know I have made progress. But still, there are bad days. Like the one I had last week when my brain decided that actually, it was going to ignore all that progress, and collapse in a panic attack on the way to the real-world thing I was trying to attend.
I decided that instead of letting the night be a complete failure, I’d go home, regroup, and try the night again, from a different angle. Because about a month ago, I had this idea. That if I like comedy so much but the drawback is it too easily becomes an escape from the real world, the obvious solution is to find some comedy that exists in my real world. So I Googled comedy nights in my area, found this one at a pub, thought it’ll probably be shit but I should try it sometime. And then last week, the day that I was looking for a reason to try again with going out instead of letting the night be defined by failure to do so, happened to be the night when it was on. So I went, had a great time, afterward I had a conversation with my brother that didn’t turn into a fight for first time in ages but that’s another issue; overall it was a very positive experience, I was excited to go back.
Here's the downside: it takes place every Thursday. And this morning, I found myself thinking, “Shit, I can’t go back there tonight, it’s the Taskmaster premiere.” I actually could watch the episode and then immediately leave for this comedy thing, but I don’t want to do that. With a fresh new Taskmaster episode, I want to take my time as I watch it, pause to take screenshots and write shit down and make pointless posts on this blog as I get excited about things. There’s only one chance to watch each episode for the first time, I can’t rush that shit.
So I genuinely thought about staying home, and then I remembered that that runs completely counter to the entire point of my planned excursions. I want to start going to this pub night to make comedy into a way to engage with the world around me, rather than just a reason to stay in my bedroom and ignore it for comedic things I access on my computer. It will really defeat the purpose if I skip it because I have to stay home and watch Taskmaster in a way that lets me post about it on a Tumblr blog.
…So that’s the reason why, even though I’m ridiculously excited about the new season - wildly, disproportionately excited about the new season - I think I’m going to watch the new episode tomorrow morning. I hope it’s great, I hope everyone has a great time watching it, I’m going to stay away from this site to avoid spoilers and preserve my experience, I love this lineup so fucking much that I’m almost concerned it sets expectations too high to live up to, but these people can do it if anyone can. It’ll be great. Tomorrow.

“The other thing that many people don‘t understand about that process and mostly because I simply don‘t talk about it very much is that calling it a voice tends to place it exclusively in that kind of realm, that it was an audio experience. I only call it the Voice because I don‘t have any other name to call it, that‘s how I met it, it was a voice. I know that there are many names for such a thing, but I assume that if the Voice had a name it wanted me to call it, it would have given it to me and it didn‘t. But the fact was that what it was that I was dealing with, the “Voice,” is not the same as the kind of experience I went through, which was very different. It was physical, mutative, it was painful, it was audio, visual, and it was more than that. It was being plugged in, in a way, to what one isn‘t necessarily designed to be plugged into. So, I guess that is how much time, 8 days, was necessary at that speed with that complexity of input to put inside of me all the information that was necessary.” – Ra Uru Hu, Rave Cosmology 1, the Bhan Tugh, lesson 1: the beginning before the start
(Source)
The Bhan Tugh Plates
Before there was light, there was something else: the juxtaposition of the Bhan and Tugh. At the heart of this very special eleven week course are the Bhan Tugh Plates, created by Ra Uru Hu in 1994 to tell the story he was told on the first day of his encounter in 1987. They contain the keys to how the cosmos was conceived and then structured along a line of geometry that began approximately 15 billion years ago and continues unbroken to include you today.
The simplicity of these illustrated manuscript plates allows us to learn and share stages of juxtaposition and biverse conception, enriched by dark matter research and the dialogue between quantum mechanics and relativity. Other topics covered: the prime crystals and monopole, the origins of the neutrino stream, core fractal geometry, the birth of stars and consciousness. Dog, Camel and Center, the 88 Alphas, the mechanics of incarnation, specific planetary roles and triggers for mutation in our time, and also the dance of Phoenician cosmology with the Human Design revelation. This is the cornerstone offering of the Rave Cosmology Certification Program.
Lavishly complemented with easy-to-reference images (Quick Time) of forces like dark matter and star birth. And, of course, continuing the Rave Cosmology story telling tradition begun by Ra Uru Hu.

“The body doesn’t care about you. Your vehicle doesn’t care about you. Your brain doesn’t care about you, that you think you think you are. It doesn’t. It’s living out a very, very deep, programmed, mechanical process that has a beginning, a middle and an end. You just happen to be a by-product of all of that, nothing more, nothing less. Left on the outside, not even allowed to enter the body, can you imagine.
Think about it. This illusion we have about soul, think about it. There you are in the womb just this perfect mechanical flesh bag; it’s perfect, this bio-mechanism, no Personality crystal, just the Design, just the Monopole. They build these machines, they run them, they drive them, and they kill them.
Then you have that moment, that moment where the Personality is going to be called in. But it’s not called in; it’s yanked into the orbit of the vehicle. That’s all.
It’s my joke when people ask me why I wear hats. It’s to keep my Personality crystal warm. It doesn’t even get to be in the body. Then you think that who you think you are runs your show. It’s hilarious. It’s sad; actually, it’s tragic comedy. It really is. There is the Personality stuck on the outside, don’t even let it in. And it’s the form that offers you those little aspects that you call Personality activations. It’s the form that creates that potential. It’s the form principle that sets the moment for bringing you in that is going to set the moment of your birth. It’s all fixed. It’s all a game. And the Personality sits on the outside. And it thinks that it is dying, and it’s not. It was never part of it anyway.
That’s the thing to really grasp. The Personality really has nothing to do with the life; nothing at all. It’s just a seduction to be pulled into the illusion; it’s just an illusion. It’s just the limitation of the primitiveness of the brainpan that we have, that this is the way that it functions. The illusion that we have that this is our vehicle, that this is our life. But in death the joke is revealed. In death the Design doesn’t even turn around and say good-bye to the Personality. It shows it its rear and the door, and that’s it, it doesn’t care.”

In ‘the Nature of the Stars’ we get to explore many stars that are seemingly far away but are located on the Elliptic of our Solar System. However interesting and rewarding it is to look at the position of the planets in our Rave Bodygraph, we usually only look at the imprinting of our Design and at the daily Transits. And while also understanding both the Sun and Jupiter are our greatest influences of Neutrinos, the Neutrinos come from all the stars, in all the galaxies.
And these far-away Neutrino streams also have influence on our lives, maybe even on our imprinting. And we can look at that. We can track the position of them through the ages and see what their influence is and has been. However remote they sometimes are, many light-years away, their consistency, the slow progression of their location relative to us, has given us this constant stream of influence and unfiltered consciousness.
To explore the background frequencies of the program, of that which is localized to our Solar System as the Cross of Planning and the upcoming Cross of the Sleeping Phoenix, but then also what is happening way beyond it and thus beyond our daily contemplations and comprehension. Especially also for someone like me as I’ve lived in cities most of my life, to realize how disconnected I am, but most of us (western) humans are from the star field and their influences, but also from their beauty and their stories, the impressions the Chinese, the Persians, Babylonians, Arabs, the Mayans and the Egyptians had of these stellar objects.
The mystical, the magical and the Cosmological perceptions of them for us as humans throughout the millennia. When our physical development of speech started and we got to give names to the things we saw. How also the color of the starlight itself gave the impression of being associated with this, or with that. With war or fortune, which to rely on for navigation, or which ones divide the heavens up in 4 parts. How some have remarkably similar stories for different peoples and cultures in different times, and some other interpretations can be vastly different in how they were perceived. And through which grew this long, long oral tradition of passing the information over to our children’s children.
And to get to see, at least in theory, how you personally and individually, are connected with those far away stars. Which Star is in range of your Link Node, the Design North Node of your Human Design Rave Bodygraph. And which descriptions, what influence they might hold for you. And then also to see to what extent, if you also have one of the planets fixing it in your chart as well, as we zoom into the details and specifics. And thus get to explore the gradient of possible influence for you.
But then also zoom out, to the generations that came before you and will come after you, to find your stellar family, those people who are born about 18.6 years before and after your Design date, and again before and after them. And perhaps, to investigate and experiment, to explore the possible influence of yours and their North Node Link star in you and them.
And lastly, to get to see, how each little bit of information of Human Design, the micro and/or the macro helps you, helps us, to help ourselves. That we learn to make our own decisions. Whether we won the lottery or are in a war zone, or at the closing of an era as the program shifts from Planning to the Sleeping Phoenix with everything that this holds for us. That we know, how to make our own decisions, and not need to be or feel like a victim, but instead become the full expression of us ourselves, regardless of outer circumstances. And live the life that is correct for us at peace, satisfied, successful and surprised as the 9-centered beings we already are.

Things that Spark Joy-4x09
Well. I have a,,,lot of thoughts about this episode and a lot of them are less than charitable, but that’s down to the writing. Taken as the quasi-bottle episode it was meant to be, and ignoring some of the writing choices and the fact there are only 4 episodes left ever, there were quite a few things this episode that delighted me and made me smile. So lets focus on the joy! If you want the other, less than charitable thoughts, those can be found here. Okay, let’s giddyap! *
* Merriam-Webster is insisting this is the correct word but I am not convinced...
Trevino had quite the challenge directing an episode so far outside the norm and he did a really great job! The writing isn’t on him, so purely from a visual standpoint, this episode looked good and the scenes flowed well into each other. I hope he gets more changes to direct since he seemed to really enjoy it and was really excited. Good for him!
I’m going to complain about other elements of this later but I can multitask by liking and hating different elements of the same thing soo 🤷🏻‍♀️ I love that Max recognizes that Liz is the best person to help them and is ready to pop into her mind and see if she can’t talk them through how to save her. He’s always at his best when he has faith in her, is supporting her, or is reminding her not to give in to a fear of the future because they can face anything together. I want the show to lean into that element more because it’s always few and far between with them.
I enjoyed the “Wild West” theme, I thought it was a fun idea, and it gave (almost) everyone an excuse to do some cool and different costume things and play around a little with an AU.
Jeanine getting to really lead an episode was nice to see and as I said in my liveblogging, her facial expressions and physical comedy, especially while trying to talk to mindscape Arturo and Rosa were hilarious. Jeanine is so much fun to watch and I wish this show had better writers because she can deliver so much!
I also enjoyed them leaning in to Liz’s smarts by having her tracking what her body was doing in the real world and predicting what treatments she was being given and how it helped her not feel alone because she knew they were out there buying her time. Plus, the idea of fighting your darker side is a good one and what we should have seen in season 2 instead of that split second of “evil” Max that was resolved in one scene. I actually AM interested in seeing what happens here, though I think this would have been better placed FAR earlier in the season to give us time with this storyline. Because Nathan did a great job as Jones, and now Jeanine is a lot of fun as Evil!Liz and I think we deserve more time with her.
I did laugh at Isobel typically being our sword and power welding mindscape badass, but since she should have been a gunslinger in this AU and wasn’t, she was killed immediately. Evil!Liz really pulls no punches and I kinda love that because it really does feel very Liz when she’s in her “science” brain.
Max getting drug away behind a horse was a little therapeutic, NGL...
DEPUTY MACHETE! That’s it. That’s the bullet point. I love him so much! I really wish we had gotten more of Arturo and less of the guest stars this season, but this was a fun and different part for Arturo to play and it was so enjoyable!
The fire-writing message was a fun visual
Despite my other issues with this storyline, it was nice to see Heath didn’t fall off the face of the planet! His tearful speech about not going to med school because he needed to continue his lifelong work of looking after his soulmate brother (apparently. sure Jan 🙄) was very sweet and it was nice to see someone was allowed to be concerned about a person they love going missing, and upset about not being told immediately without having to walk it back. It was also fun to see him show up in the mindscape giving Liz a drink that she’s able to clock is medicine and connects the dots on why he’s there.
Also nice to see Sanders, we never get to see him enough so even a brief appearance is nice, especially with him being the one to take out Clyde the first time because everyone else is just standing around.
NGL this is THEE most fun I’ve had with Clyde. He’s a good fit for cartoonish, generic, Wild West Villain. Him agreeing to the poker game to give Liz answers and then just, NOT giving them to her and running away was a lot of fun because the bad guys SHOULDN’T play by the rules. And him just popping up over and over again because there’s always another villain in the story was a cool visual for what Liz needs to understand which is the bad stuff will always be there and all we have is this one life and waiting for all the bad to be defeated is not a reasonable expectation and wastes the time you DO have with the people you love.
Again, other thoughts on this as well, but had Kyle been treated better by the narrative all along, him showing up here as a horse would be absolutely hilarious. As it is, it still did give me a little chuckle and Liz’s reaction to that whole thing was fun.
As brief as it was, it was good to get a few Isobel/Max scenes which we’ve been sorely lacking for awhile now. Also, a couple of Kybel crumbs!
Evil!Liz getting to spill all of the tea about Max holding her back was good because it’s something the show hasn’t really addressed which is WHY the two of them are in a constant, cyclical argument. The plan was always to leave Roswell and travel, for both of them, but Max never got to so I have struggled to understand the shows insistence that they both want to build a “normal” life in Roswell when that was never EITHER of their dreams. And I’m hoping that this time they’ll be able to take that step forward and stop holding each other back and get TF out of this town so Liz can be brilliant and Max can write his books while smiling dopily at her excited science rants which is when the two of them are always at their best.
Clyde getting his neck snapped was cathartic but it should have been Michael or Arturo getting to have that chance honestly. Some of the other deaths (lets be real, ONE of the other deaths) were cathartic as well though it would have been more true to what we know for that one in the group to have betrayed them to the Evil!Liz but that would be admitting someone has faults and is a bad person and we can’t have that! So settling for mildly cathartic deaths it is,
Michael using his powers to hold Liz down shouldn’t have given me other, NSFW ideas about what him and Alex might get up to, but since the show refuses to feed us, I gotta make my own fun.
Again, I’d like more time with Liz and Evil!Liz getting to banter in Liz’s mind because “Bitch Cassidy” and “now that Max is nurtured” are gems and we should get more bitchy Liz honestly.
Liz getting powers could be cool though if she does I doubt she’d be able to keep them which is sad.
Now for the Malex crumbs of goodness!
"Liz, she's got her boyfriend, you've got your boyfriend, imma go get MY boyfriend." Yaaaaaas. Let everyone else deal with this nonsense and go get your man!
“Max went into a mindscape after Liz, the least I can do is jump into a sinkhole to save my soulmate” !!!!! As much as the writing has been all over the place and generally sucked at allowing Michael to care about Alex, whenever they DO give Vlamis some crumbs to work with, he delivers a whole meal!
I tried to focus on all the little moments that sparked some kind of joy this episode and as I said, if this wasn’t SO close to the end of the final season I think it would have been better received because there was some good stuff here!

the emoji ask meme is super fun! 💞 & 🤭, please and thank you!
welp, sorry this took me several weeks to get around to answering! Life and anxiety happens!!
💞 Who's your comfort character?
If you had asked me this back in 2021, I would have said writing Jaskier. Easy to fall into the sunshine-y bard with lots of feelings. This year I have really enjoyed and found a lot of comfort in writing Yen. I want to do a lot more with her while she's figuring out her heart and mind after she loses and gets her magic back. There's so much character growth here to play with and explore and I like trying to see things from her perspective. I also have a significant amount of emotional investment in Leshen Eskel which has become a very interesting and happy place for me to explore. Also it's so specific and niche and it's probably a little overwhelming from the outside perspective, ahaha. This comfort character is definitely not anyone else's comfort character but ayyyyy I love my tree boyfriend, okay.
🤭 Do you have a favorite tag to use when posting your works?
AO3 tags? Or tumblr tags? I am terrible at tagging, generally, and I spend too much time fretting over it.. and I end up thinking I overtag anyway, and probably feel like people are less likely to read the stuff based on my tags but I think that's just an anxiety brain thing. Anyway, I get a lot of mileage out of the AU - Canonical Divergence and Character Study tags. One of my favorite type of AUs to write and think about are those "what if things are like just slightly different enough to continue deviating slowly as time progresses?" Which is what you can see in my "what if Eskel survives?" and "what if Yen's magic doesn't feel/work the same way once she gets it back and it's a magical disability?" So many possibilities to run with here... it's catnip. Kuwdora-nip. But I really am hammering away at the softness/tenderness tags because I want my blorbos to have some soft, squishy emotional and physical intimacy. I also do plenty Hurt/Comfort, too. My favorite freeform tags this past year is 'soft sex comedy' -- which I get to use for a second time for an upcoming fic, yayyyy.
Anyway, gonna try to answer the rest of my asks this week! I got a lot of writing on my brain this month. Feel free to send me a witcher writing ask and I swear it won't be 3 weeks for me to answer.

Winter 2021 Anime Worth Watching!
Since 2020 basically sacrificed itself to give us the most stacked anime season of all time, I’m currently buried under the weight of almost 20 shows airing per week. So for anyone who’s looking for some anime to watch this winter, here’s some first impressions! I’m speed running my list this time by only talking about the new shows...because otherwise this would be my great American novel.
If anyone’s interested, I have master lists for both 2020 anime and 2019 anime, because there’s no shortage of fun things to find.
New Shows!
And before anyone asks, So I’m A Spider, So What? isn’t on here, because CG spiders freak me out.
Cells At Work Code Black: This...less comedic spin off of Cells At Work (made by a different studio) takes the wholesome concept of Osmosis Jones meets cute anime girls and turns it on its head. In this much more depressing version, we follow a rookie red blood cell who works in the body of an overly stressed, alcoholic smoker who puts every strain on the body imaginable. I love Red Blood Cell AA2153 and his co-workers, but man am I glad we get the regular Cells At Work airing this season too, because I need something fun and uplifting after seeing my sweet son go through hell every episode.
Tumblr media
*Heaven’s Design Team: Have you ever wondered how God came up with some of the weird ass animals that live on this planet? Like, what’s the deal with giraffes? And why can’t we have dragons and flying horses? Well this is a comedy about the engineers and designers in heaven creating the new animals that are going to inhabit the Earth. That’s it, that’s the show. It’s kind of in the same vein as Cells At Work, having comedy blend with a surprising amount of educational information. If you want something light and funny, this is the show for you (though I don’t think it needs to have full length episodes). I’m just hoping there’s an episode about how the hell the platypus was created. Also it’s the only new one available on Crunchyroll.
Tumblr media
Horimiya: A romantic comedy about a girl named Hori who fits the image of a perfect queen bee and a quiet bespectacled boy named Miyamura who never makes an impression at school. When the two meet by chance outside of the classroom, we see that Hori is practically raising a younger brother by herself, and Miyamura is actually a sweet guy who happens to be covered in tattoos and piercings. This show is an exercise in breaking down the images people have of others in their minds, and it’s a concept that really hits home in a fun and meaningful way. Honestly, this has become one of my immediate favorites. The characters have great chemistry, and I can’t wait to see more of them!
Tumblr media
Monster Incidents (Kemono Jihen): When big shot Tokyo detective Inugami is called to a rural town to investigate a series of strange animal deaths, he finds a mysterious boy with the nickname Dorotabo who has been shunned by the other children in town. As the detective gets closer to Dorotabo, he discovers that there may be more...inhuman secrets to the boy than he realizes...and Dorotabo discovers that Inugami has some secrets of his own. This is a hard show to sell without spoiling the first episode, but it had twists and turns that kept me engaged from start to finish. I’m really interested to see where the plot goes, because I thought this was going to be something totally different just from the PV and series summary. If it plays its cards right, this could be a great paranormal detective show!
Tumblr media
Wonder Egg Priority: A psychological drama about a girl named Ai who starts having dreams about a mysterious egg that promises to give her what she wants most in the world...a true friend. Before long, she begins to see how the dream world and reality are tied together, and trippy antics ensue. It’s hard to say more without spoiling anything, but I had to go back and add this one in because I made the mistake of thinking it was an OVA when it’s actually a full series. And what a series it’s starting out to be. This anime has all the psychological discomfort of a Satoshi Kon product with the beauty and style of something from Kyoani (even though it’s made by Clover Works). It’s really one of those anime you just have to see to understand.
Tumblr media
Sk8-∞ (Skate the infinity): An original skateboarding anime from Bones, featuring a typical sports anime protagonist who takes a new transfer student who has never skateboarded in his life under his wing. Together they compete in dangerous races and take the skating community by storm. The character designs rival Appare Ranman’s in outlandish creativity, and I can smell the main characters’ ship dynamic a mile away (considering they’re exactly the same as the protagonists from Robihachi). If you’re looking for some wild and crazy fun with top notch skateboarding animation, don’t skip this!
Tumblr media
2.43: Seiin Koukou Danshi Volley-bu (Seiin High School Boys Volleyball Club): Yes, it’s another volleyball anime. And no, it’s not just a clone of Haikyu. This story follows Yuni Kuroba, a physically built but emotionally weak teenager who finds out his childhood friend Hajime is moving back to their hometown for high school. Yuni discovers Hajime has become an exceptional volleyball player and they join their school’s volleyball club hoping to turn the unknown team into a rising star. If anything, this anime is much more like Stars Align or Free, where the sport is a backdrop for letting the characters explore their personal problems. Or at least it seems that way after the first episode. I went into this show ready to throw it in the trash because how could anything compete against my beloved Haikyu, but I found myself really enjoying the dynamics of the main duo and I’m curious to see what the rest of the team is like.
Tumblr media
And speaking of sports anime rip-offs…..I can’t believe I’m including this but…
Skate Leading Stars: The show where the animators clearly wanted to design another throw away idol anime but saw how popular Yuri On Ice was so they decided to make whatever the hell this show is instead. It revolves around a fictional team sport called skate leading, and we follow the world’s most insufferable main character, a former figure skater named Kensei who wants to return to the ice and join his school’s skate leading team after he finds out his childhood rival is going to compete in the sport. Look, this show is just trashy enough to get a certain type of audience hooked, and it mainly has to do with the best boy of the winter season, Hayato Sasugai, the aspiring team “coach” who pulled most of us into watching this show with his punk appearance, snide comments and smug personality. He’s basically the lovechild of Izaya Orihara and Shizuo Heiwajima in a high school sports anime setting. The show treats itself with the perfect amount of sincerity to get away with being absolutely ridiculous most of the time without making you feel like you’re watching it from a dumpster...like Try Knights. You will know after one episode whether this show is for you. All I can say is, Hayato is worth the watch, and I haven’t seen any 3D animation used for the skating scenes (yet) so that’s a win for me.
Tumblr media
Honorable mention:
Jobless Reincarnation ( Mushoku Tensei): Yet another isekai where the main character is hit by a car (big surprise) and gets reincarnated into a fantasy world...but he happens to remember his previous life and narrates himself growing up as a jaded adult. I’m only including this because it looked amazing animation wise, and I love the opening where getting hit by a car and dying is actually traumatic. And I love the protagonist’s parents (who are retired adventurers who just want to bang all the time). But honestly...the main character is the fucking worst, and I don’t know if I want to keep watching it because of how creepy and weird he is. Like...he’s the hit on your fantasy mom as a baby kind of creepy and weird. But for anyone who wants a cool looking isekai that had an amazing PV, it’s worth checking out.
Tumblr media
Continuing Series!
Because the real gold of the season is in all the established anime getting their next seasons, I’m just going to list some of the things that are also amazing and definitely worth checking out if you haven’t already (because I’ve already talked about most of them at some point and don’t know what else to say).
Attack On Titan season 4
The Promised Neverland season 2
Beastars season 2
Log Horizon season 3
That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime season 2
Re: Zero season 2 (second cour)
Dr. Stone season 2
Cells at Work season 2
Osomatsu-san season 3 (second cour)
Higurashi New (second cour)
Jujutsu Kaisen (second cour)
Not to mention all the shows I don’t watch that everyone else loves...like World Trigger (which I have seen quite a bit of, but long shounen shows are too much for me now) Quintessential Quintuplets, and Non Non Biyori.
So there’s just some of all the anime airing this season. Hopefully, someone can find something they like. Here’s to a great year...well, of anime at least...

how to fake date your best friend | jake sim
Tumblr media
✰ summary: the rules were simple -
pretend to be the boyfriend of you, his best friend who wants the attention of their crush, for a week and a week only
no kissing (bc gross cooties amirite) allowed, unless needed in times of desperate measure
and no matter what, absolutely, most definitely, do not fall in love.

Tuesday, December 8th
Jake Sim lives a simple life.
He likes to think he leads the normal, stereotypical life of a teenage boy. Has decent grades, plays soccer after school, skateboards around the neighborhood, has a best friend who he’s desperately in love with, and has a stable group of friends.
Okay, maybe not so simple, because this boy would physically launch himself to the moon and drill at its surface to collect moon dust for you if you asked him to––despite his deadly fear of combusting in outer space.
But that fear doesn’t even compare to his worst one yet: not having you in his life.
And so, he decided to just repress any and all feelings he’s had for you ever since he discovered them in middle school, when he realized he hated seeing you go to the eighth grade dance with a date––that wasn’t him.
He decided that he wasn’t going to risk losing a life-long friendship over some dumb, teenage boy feelings.
They were probably powered by his testosterone anyways. Yeah, that’s totally it.
He’s totally not in love with you.
So yes, he lives a pretty normal life. Every day is the same as the last, and tomorrow will be the same as today. But he likes it like that––he doesn’t want anything to change.
Especially not now, when he finds himself content with every aspect of his life (okay maybe except for his history grade, god, does he hate history).
So, it catches him off guard when you arrive at the group’s usual lunch table, located outside in your school’s courtyard, looking as excited as ever.
Jake’s the only one at the table so far. The remaining usually showed up late––Heeseung spends his first half of lunch tutoring freshmen for community service hours (but the poor boy has no idea what he’s doing), Sunghoon is probably stuck in line in the cafeteria again (he always forgets to pack his own lunch), and Jay is...well actually, no one ever knows where Jay comes from. He’s a special one.
It catches Jake even more off guard when you skip over any greeting a normal person would give, and start speaking at one hundred words per second.
And that catches us up to the present.
“Y-You want me to what?” Jake’s stuttering as you stare at him with your hopeful eyes from across the lunch table.
Despite the expression planted on your face, which screams your excitement for your “brilliant, amazing, genius, Einstein-could-never” idea (or whatever other words you used to describe it––Jake can’t exactly recall the specific terms you used, they all came out of your mouth too fast), you don’t respond to his question of bafflement. You continue to stare at him, awaiting his response. Jake could compare the look on your face right now to a puppy looking up at its owner, eagerly waiting for a treat. You know, tongue out and all.
He swallows the lump that’s lodged in this throat (is that the sandwich he’s having, or his nerves?) and continues to give you his look of confusion laced with a nervous smile because surely, you’re joking.
You grab what’s left of your sandwich from his hands and take your own bite. Somewhere in between you arriving at the table and now, Jake’s managed to steal the sandwich you brought today. You did make the best chicken sandwiches, in his defense.
“Well? It’s only for the week! And I promise you, after one week, if nothing happens––if he doesn’t make a move or anything––I’ll move on from him like you’ve been telling me to.” Your words are muffled from you savoring your sandwich, or what’s left of it anyways. (Mental note to self: don’t share your lunch with Jake ever again.)
When Jake still doesn’t respond (you’ve truly gotten this poor boy paralyzed), you find it as a sign to continue.
“I think it’s the perfect plan. Plus, if it doesn’t work out, it’ll be like the universe is telling me to finally move on, right?”
Wrong.
Jake has been encouraging you to move on from your crush because well, if we’re being honest here, he selfishly wants you to himself. Even if it wasn’t romantically.
Preferably, he would kill to get to be the one who holds your hand in the hall, call you cheesy pet names, post disgustingly cute couple pics for the ‘gram––but for the sake of potentially ruining his relationship with you, he’ll just have to settle with the role of being your best friend.
(And he’s totally fine with that! Totally. Yup.)
But he didn’t think that you moving on would only be a mere possible outcome (that may not even happen!) from whatever this stunt is you wanna pull.
Said stunt: Pretend to date one another and hope it catches the eye of a certain someone you have your eye on: Park Sunghoon.
Ah yes, Park Sunghoon. The previously mentioned one who’s probably still in line waiting to get his lunch as we speak.
Park Sunghoon, the tall, kind, intelligent, charming young boy that everyone knows. And if anyone didn’t know him, they most definitely knew of him. He wasn’t hard to miss in the halls; everything about him just radiates perfection.
If you plucked a random high-schooler from the halls of this school and interviewed them on the Park Sunghoon, they’d say you’d be lucky enough if the quiet boy so much as sparked a conversation with you, even if it was about what last night’s chemistry homework was.
Well if that were true, then you and the rest of the boys would be considered lottery winners.
How that happened, how the four of you dysfunctional beings earned his friendship, the world may never know. However, Jake is fully convinced that this was the universe’s way of playing a cruel joke on him.
For as long as Jake could remember, it’s always been just the two of you. You and Jake. Jake and you. (With the exception of Heeseung and Jay, of course, who came along in middle school)
In fact, your earliest memory of Jake was when he peed his pants in the kindergarten during nap time. You would know, you had the privilege of sharing a sleeping mat with him that one fateful day and in result...let’s just say the smell didn’t wear off from your clothes until a week later. Five-year-old you didn’t forgive five-year-old Jake for the longest time.
And since then, you’ve been attached by the hip. And Jake liked it like that. Jake didn’t need anyone else in his life (with the exception of Leila) if he had you. He had found his home within you, and he didn’t plan on sharing his space anytime soon.
Nevertheless, the universe had a completely different idea for the two of you.
Sunghoon came into the picture last year, towards the end of the school year. Despite being the new kid, he found his way into your cherished friend group and naturally, the five of you grew as close as friends could be.
That was the problem. Jake wanted to hate Sunghoon, to despise him for being the one that you had heart eyes for, but he couldn’t.
Not only was Sunghoon one of Jake’s closest friends, but he didn’t want to ruin the dynamic of the friend group. After you, the three chaotic boys were the next most important people in Jake’s life.
And so, we have the typical love triangle plot that every coming-of-age movie follows. Of course, this is all unbeknownst to you––you may be intelligent and a people-person, but oh boy can you not see the heart eyes your very own best friend has for you.
“It’ll be easier than you think, really! Look, we can even set boundaries or rules or whatever,” you propose, as if you’re trying to get him to sign a contract.
Rules to a fake relationship? We’re not living in a Netflix romcom, are we?
“Okay rule number 1: it’ll only be for a week and a week only, rule number 2: we don’t have to do anything too couple-ly like...” you pause to wonder for a second.
“Like PDA or anything! You know, unless we really need to convince him,” you casually add. When he responds with radio silence and stares at you with absolute concern painted all over his face, you cough. “Jake, I’m joking.”
Right. Of course. Obviously.
“And of course, just try not to fall in love with me, it’ll be hard, I know,” you send a playful wink his way.
Too late. Turns out it’s not that hard. Jake would know.
Jake continues to stare at you in hesitation. Yeah, you’ve had your fair share of crazy ideas (that Jake always find himself agreeing to––the poor boy just can’t seem to say no to you), but fake dating you?
Jake is sure he wouldn’t be able to pull it off without slowly destroying himself. He’d just have to say no, he’s sure you can find someone else to do it for you.
Yes, that’s it, just say no.
Jake has to keep some of his pride in tact.
Tumblr media
Jake does not say no.
He doesn’t know what went wrong. His mind said one thing, but his words said another.
To be fair, Jake’s actions have always been influenced by his heart, not his brain, anyways. And when it comes to you, you bet it’ll be coming from his heart.
So here he was now, under the stare of three equally shocked and confused guys across from you and him at the lunch table, your fingers intertwined with his.
Just a few seconds ago, you had spotted the rest of the lunch bunch approaching the table, and you quickly grabbed Jake’s hand and scooted in closer to him.
Now here you were, explaining to your friends of your sudden relationship.
Jake is too zoned out to even physically pick up your explanation. Something along the lines of "we’ve been dating for a while but didn’t want to tell you guys yet." From the feeling of your hand clutched tightly into his and your body right up next to him, his mind was short-circuiting.
How is he supposed to last an entire week of this if he couldn't handle innocent hand holding? Hand holding? God, what are we, back in the fifth grade?
Two minutes into this scheme and Jake's mind has already downgraded itself to a fifth grader's.
Jake mentally scolds himself for giving in, this was not a good idea.
Tumblr media
It takes Jake approximately 12 hours to conclude that this stunt of yours may, actually, be a good idea. He knows this because approximately 12 hours after the events surrounding lunch, he receives a text from you:
y/n [12:03AM]: thanks again for doing this for me jake
y/n [12:03AM]: ur actually the best
y/n [12:04AM]: ew ok that was cheesy but really i owe u a big one <333
Following your thread of texts is a really close up photo of you widely smiling into the camera. A smile so big, Jake’s convinced your face was probably in pain after taking that picture.
Anyone else might’ve thought the photo looked borderline insane but because Jake’s Jake, aka a simpᵗᵐ for you, he comes to the conclusion that it’s singlehandedly the cutest thing he’s ever seen in the entire world.
After quickly saving the selfie into his phone, Jake tells himself that maybe this won’t be a bad thing after all. I mean, anything that makes you smile like that meant it has to be a good idea, right?
Spoken like a true simp.
Plus, dating you––fake dating you––is pretty much the same as it was before. He already spends most of his days with you to begin with. Now, it’s just with added displays of affection. For show, obviously. Obviously.
And look, if Jake will never get to actually be with you, then he’ll take what he can get. And if that meant fake dating you, well, he reasons that it’s better than nothing at all.

Wednesday, December 9th
Jake’s playing with the rings on your right hand and you’re in the middle of dramatically telling the lunch table about the infuriating Karen you had to deal with at work the other day when Jay comes up with a grin you all know a little too well.
“Okay that grin means one of two things: you finally grew the balls to ask out that poor girl you’ve been teasing all year or you have something planned that we won’t like,” you interrupt your story when you catch Jay’s sly expression, evoking a chuckle from Jake, who’s now found a new distraction with the bracelets perches on your wrist.
“Excuse you, I’ll have you know that I did ask her out. It just so happens that she’s currently ‘in between boyfriends’ whatever that means. Ouch, by the way,” Jay feigns hurt from your comment by clutching the area above his heart through his shirt. Ever the drama queen. “But yes, I do have something planned. And no, it’s not a bad idea.”
Jay squeezes his way in between Sunghoon and Heeseung from across you and begins to pull out his own lunch. Everyone’s eyes follow him as he settles in because as bad as his unknown idea may be, you’re all still curious on what this boy has to say.
“Well are you going to elaborate or...” Heeseung speaks up for everyone after you all mentally debate one another through darting eyes on who’s going to have to bite Jay’s silent bait.
Jay then forcefully sets both hands on his table, which elicits a little jump from you as you go for a bite of your sandwich. Adorable, Jake tells himself.
“My parents are out of town this weekend. We all know what that means...”
Yes. We do know what that means. The four of you have seen this scenario play out many times, a little too many times for your own good.
This meant one of Jay’s infamous house parties that he always throws whenever his parents go out of town. And because his parents are hot-shot CEOs of an important company whose name you don’t remember (it’s nothing personal, your brain can only handle so much information and this physics exam you were studying for took up 90% of your brain capacity at the moment), they’re out of town often.
And along with Jay’s parties comes chaos. Lots of it. And that’s because...well, it’s safe to say that despite the many school-wide presentations the police officers of your school have held in the auditorium on why you shouldn’t drink underage, Jay’s parents’ liquor cabinet always seems to find itself missing many a few bottles after each party. But we don’t talk about that. Shush.
Almost simultaneously, everyone at the table lets out a groan, much to Jay’s disappointment.
“C’mon guys! It’s been a while since anything’s fun happened to this school, think of all the sad students in that building right now,” he extends a finger whole-ass arm and points at your school, “who are in dire need of fun and a little...” he punctuates his sentence with the hand motion of chugging down a drink, followed with a gulping sound elicited from his tongue clicking.
You roll your eyes along with everyone else. Don’t be like Jay, kids. Listen to those police officers.
“Jay, it’s midterm season! I have an exam on Monday and I definitely do not want to spend the nights before wasted,” you give him an apologetic look. As crazy as Jay is, you do feel bad nonetheless. The boy just wants to have fun.
Your response is followed up with similar comments from around the table.
“I’m helping y/n study”
“I have an important skating performance on Sunday”
“Uh...my hamster died?” (ok Heeseung panicked, don’t blame the guy)
Ignoring that last excuse of an excuse, Jay continues his debate nonetheless. “Just come for the sake of it! No one’s saying you have to get wasted. Pleaseeee for me?”
Jay throws these parties so often, you’re not sure why he’s so set on making sure you’re all going to be there. Well, I guess who wouldn’t want their closest friends to be at their own party?
That and, Jay needs to make sure his friends are there to stop him from doing anything stupid. We all know this boy has had enough embarrassing moments to last him a lifetime.
Everyone at the table gives each other the same hesitant look. Heeseung is the first to give in, “Oh fuck it. Sure, count me in.”
Jay’s fist pumping the air before turning to Sunghoon with the most hopeful eyes.
Sunghoon simply sighs in return. “Alright okay, I’ll bite. But if you vomit on my shoes again, I’m out the door.” Jay’s finger is automatically drawing a cross over his heart as a promise to not ruin Sunghoon’s Nikes again.
He then looks to you with puppy eyes.
You, who's already staring back at Jay with a stoic look in your eyes, are stubborn and (unlike the previous weaklings) are not as easy to convince. And somehow, this began an unannounced staring contest between the two of you, a contest to see who would budge first. This isn't an uncommon occurrence between you and Jay, but the rest of the boys are still on the edges of their seats watching this duel.
Jake casually wraps an arm around your shoulder and you’re brought in close, but still undeterred from your death-stare match with the boy across from you.
If it’s not obvious enough, Jake’s really gotten into his role of being your boyfriend, despite it only being 24 hours since he last froze at your touch. Character development, you’ll give him that.
You almost forget he’s faking it for a quick second. And for an even quicker second, you imagine he wasn’t faking it. And you swear you feel butterflies in your stomach at that thought.
Weird.
You mentally shake the thought out of your head. Priorities first, aka, beating Jay in this staring contest.
“Fuck,” you stutter when you finally blink, admitting defeat to a grinning Jay. “Okay, okay, I’ll THINK about it. I’ll let you know.”
Not exactly the answer Jay was looking for, but he’ll take it. Better than a no.
He turns to Jake next, knowing there’s no way Jake will turn down a party. Just like Jay, the boy loves himself a good party.
But–
But because Jake would take your physics exam this Monday for you if you asked, because Jake would bungee jump in the Grand Canyon without a safety net below him if you asked, because Jake would fake date you to make your crush jealous for you if you asked, he doesn’t hesitate in his answer this time around: “Same as y/n, I’ll let you know.”
Jay looks at Jake. Then back at you, who he’s still clinging onto like a koala to a tree. Then back at Jake. “You two are gross. Admittedly cute. But gross.”
You look up at the boy next to you to see him already grinning at you.
For the first time today, you find yourself agreeing with Jay.
Admittedly cute.

Thursday, December 10th
You are having a bad day.
You’re having the mother of bad days.
Not only is it midterm season, but you still have all your regular weekly assignments to finish before Friday hits. So as a natural-born procrastinator does, you stayed up all last night trying to get a good amount of work done because what’s better than cramming all your work the night before it’s due? Doing it two nights before it’s due.
Well apparently it wasn’t such a good idea. Because now, here you were, frantically throwing on whatever articles of clothing you find nearest to you because you slept through all your alarms.
You’re lucky enough to make it through your school’s doors right as the second bell rings, even if you did look like you just walked straight out of a zombie apocalypse.
You’re not so lucky when you find out your first class of the day, calculus, had a pop quiz. A pop quiz on the only unit you just happened to know absolutely nothing about.
To top things off, you forgot to pack your lunch during this morning’s frenzy, meaning you’re automatically stuck sharing with Jake.
And because his mother started making him pack his own food out of a lesson of responsibility (she said something along the lines of: “Jake, you’re about to be in college and you don’t know how to pack a decent meal”), he only has a plain PB&J sandwich and a pack of Scooby-Doo gummies in his bag today (because newsflash, he still doesn’t know how to pack a decent meal).
Not that you could care less at the moment, you were too preoccupied with catching up on your assignments to even eat. And if any of the boys noticed your zombie-like state during lunch, they did a good job of not mentioning it. They knew better than to bother an irritated y/n.
Somehow, you make it through the entire school day and your after-school meeting for environmental club (save the trees!) in one piece. As you finally walk out of the school building, you exhale, automatically feeling lighter. At least the hard part of your day was done.
Now you just had to wait for Jake to finish soccer practice, which usually ended around the same time as your club, and he can drive you home, where you can continue being irritated with your day in the privacy of your own space.
You wait on the steps of the school’s entrance, waiting for a smiley Jake to come around the corner as he usually does at 5:30pm every Thursdays.
Yes, a smiling Jake is exactly what you needed to make your day ten times better, you conclude.
As if on cue, you hear a ding from your phone.
Jake [5:30PM]: ugh coach is extending practice for “team bonding”
Jake [5:30PM]: idek what team bonding is
Jake [5:31PM]: you ok if i cant drive you today? ://
It’s as if the universe decided to use you as its punching bag today.
You physically let out a distorted groan, not caring if anyone who happened to hear you thought you were a creature from out of this world, as you send him a text back.
y/n [5:32PM]: it’s all good lol have fun with tEaM bOnDiNg
Things were not all good. But no matter how upset you may be, you weren’t going to project your negative vibes onto Jake’s naturally positive ones. So you get up from the stone steps and begin your dreaded walk back home.
It’s freezing out. You should’ve known better to just throw on a hoodie and call it a day when it’s the middle of December. But then again, you figured by now you’d be in the comfort and warmth of Jake’s car and presence...not walking home in these freezing temperatures.
You think about Jake and how he’s probably currently suffering from not only his team bonding exercises (but really though, what are team bonding exercises?), but doing them in this weather as well. The poor boy.
You’re quickly broken out of your thoughts by the sound of a car engine from behind you. When you don’t see it pass by you and instead hear it pull over and park next to the curb of the sidewalk you’re currently on, you automatically deduce that this is it, this is my time, I’m about to get kidnapped by whoever it is behind me but y/n, you should probably turn around and check first before you drive yourself insane in this inner dialogue.
You turn around and squint into the front window of the car. If it were a kidnapper, this is exactly what your mother told you not to do. Her exact words were: “Run, don’t look back, and scream bloody murder.”
Good thing it wasn’t. Just an innocent Sunghoon waving his hand at you, motioning you to get in.
“Sunghoon?” You approach his car and stop at the passenger side’s open window.
“y/n! It’s freezing out, I’ll drive you home c’mon,” he nods his head towards the passenger side door.
Well, how could you say no? Sunghoon owns a nice car. Like a nice car. Like car-seat-heaters-that-make-you-feel-like-you’re-physically-melting nice. Beats getting hypothermia outside, right?
“Why are you going home from school so late?” You ask as you settle into his car, instantly melting at the touch of the aforementioned heated seats.
“Debate club, actually. Decided I needed another personality trait other than ice skating,” he starts the engine and begins driving towards the direction of your neighborhood.
You laugh at his comment, you didn’t peg him as a debate kind of student. Quiet Sunghoon? Debate club? If 2 plus 2 is four...
“Hey, I don’t call you the Ice Prince for nothing! Also, don’t forget your other personality trait: forgetting your lunch every day.”
Sunghoon quickly glances over at you to send you a dirty look (because eyes on the road, kids!), which you return with a cheeky grin. “Need I remind you that was you today?”
“Touché,” you click your tongue.
The two of you fall into a comfortable silence, the faint sound of Sunghoon's music in the background filling in the quietness.
You’re humming along until Sunghoon breaks the silence, “Did Jake get stuck at practice again?”
You don’t know why, but you swear you feel your heart beat faster at the mention of Jake’s name. No, that was always there right? Because you were with Sunghoon...your crush..obviously. Obviously.
Ignoring the feeling, you turn your attention towards the boy driving you.
“Oh yeah, something about team bonding. How’d you know?”
“Eh, I just figured since he wasn’t driving you home like he always does.” He turns into your neighborhood.
You nod at his answer.
“You two make a good couple.”
You whip your head at him. Did you hear him correctly?
“It was about time, really. You two have been ogling at one another for so long, Heeseung, Jay, and I almost placed bets on who would be the first to make a move.”
He keeps his eyes on the road, casually going on about how you and Jake make the cutest couple he’s ever seen.
You're frozen, unsure of what to think, let alone say.
You think to two days ago, when you started this entire fake relationship because of the very boy driving you home right now. The same boy who's complimenting you on your fake relationship. The same boy who's supposed to be jealous over that said relationship. The same boy you’re supposed to be crushing over.
But now...only a mere 48 hours later, you were finding yourself okay with the fact that he was happy for you. And for the life of you, you couldn’t remember why you liked Sunghoon in the first place. Not saying he isn’t one to be crushed on, I mean, look at the guy.
Maybe, just maybe, it had something to do with the fact that you didn't feel nervous or giddy or..anything at all when you got into the car with Sunghoon. At least, not until Jake's name was mentioned. That's when you felt the butterflies. At the mention of Jake.
Jake.
Weird.
But before you can come to a conclusion on why you're feeling the way you do, Sunghoon interrupts your thoughts.
"Well, we're here! Say hi to your parents for me," he pulls into your driveway as you're still collecting your thoughts.
You give him a quick thanks and one last wave as you enter the front doors of your house.
Seeing that your only solution towards confusing feelings meant distracting yourself, distract yourself you did.
Even if it meant distracting yourself with your piling assignments.
Tumblr media
The next time you look up from your work, it's suddenly way past sundown and a heavy storm has taken over. You’re surprised it hasn’t started flooding yet with the amount of rainfall you were hearing.
You check the time on your phone, the bright 8:16PM on the screen illuminating your dimly lit room. Seeing that neither of your parents have yet to be home from work, it looks like you were going to have to settle with some instant ramen for dinner tonight.
As you trudge down the stairs of your home, the sound of light knocking against the front door catches your attention. It's been a long day y/n, you're probably hearing things, it's definitely just the rain.
Nope. There it is again, but much louder. Much more urgent.
You contemplate any and all potential disasters that could happen from answering the door. Only a crazy person would be willing to go out in this hurricane-like weather to be frantically knocking on your door.
And so, you assume it has to be some psychopath trying to get into your house. Yes, there’s definitely no other logical explanation.
You scramble around your living room, looking for the next best weapon to defend you. Resorting to the flower vase your mother keeps on the table next to the front door, you hold it out in front of you, as if you're waiting for the door to burst open.
The knocking continues, gradually getting louder. You mentally curse at yourself for dropping out of the taekwondo class your dad signed you up for when you were younger.
Vase in hand, you swing open the door and brace for–
"Jake? What the fuck? Get in here, you're gonna get sick!"
You’re suddenly aware of how stupid you look, holding a light pink vase with a couple of orchids as your only form of self-defense...for it to only be your own best friend. You immediately put it back on the table as Jake quickly rushes past you and into your humble abode.
You close the door behind you and turn to face the soaked boy.
“I come bearing gifts, also known as take-out and hot chocolate from that one cafe you love. Also my company, if you’ll take it. I had a feeling you weren’t having the best day today,” he’s simply standing there, holding up a large brown paper bag in one hand, and a deliciously smelling cup of hot chocolate in the other, but you’re looking at him as if he bought you the Moon.
You stare in awe at the angel of a boy in front of you, silently thanking the stars for gifting you this amazing human being as your best friend. You don’t know what you did to deserve him.
You give him a soft smile. “Jake, you didn’t have to. It’s practically a shitstorm out there,” you cock your head towards the window, showcasing the downpour of cats and dogs outside. Jake stays by the entrance as you go down the hall and through your house’s linen closet to find a spare towel for the drenched boy.
“Nah it’s no big deal, really. Just fulfilling my duties as your loyal boyfriend,” he grins, even though you can’t see him. He likes calling himself that. Your boyfriend.
Jake continues to shake his messy hair to get the excess rain off, giving a mental apology to whoever is going to have to mop up the puddle forming on the floor due to his unannounced visit. Probably you.
Jake hears you laugh down the hall. “You’re really invested in your role, huh? Keep this up and you might actually trick me into believing you’re my actual boyfriend.”
Actual boyfriend? Jake likes the sound of that. Maybe he will keep this up then.
Jake doesn’t have much experience in acting, unless you count that time he played the role of Town Villager #3 in the third grade play, so he never found it as one of his interests. But playing the role of your boyfriend was one he was willing to fulfill for the rest of life, even if it was just for show.
Jake doesn’t respond to your comment, he’s instead self-aware of his blushing cheeks, thankful that you’re too busy rummaging through your linen closet to take notice.
“Plus, you didn’t have lunch today and I had feeling you were going to be too caught up in your work to feed yourself anything other than instant ramen,” he sets down his gifts to you on your living room’s coffee table as you come around the corner, fresh towel and new set of clothes in hand.
His eyes fall on the familiar looking pair of sweatpants and hoodie resting on the palms of your hands.
Hm. A little too familiar.
Then, it clicks in his head.
His eyes narrow at you as you giggle at his reaction, “Oh, so it takes me getting drenched in the rain for you to finally return my clothes that I’ve been missing!?”
“Hey! I’m not returning them, simply loaning them out to a friend who’s in dire need. You basically gifted them to me the second you left them here months ago.”
“You’re annoying.”
“Love you too,” you toss the clothes at him and take a seat on the floor around your coffee table, prepping the table with the boxes of Chinese food Jake supplied.
After Jake changes into the stolen dry clothes, he takes a seat next to an already-eating you at the coffee table.
“You. are. my lord and savior Sim Jaeyun,” you’re saying with your mouth full of fried rice. You sigh from satisfaction and rest your head against Jake’s shoulder as you continue chewing. He grins as he helps himself to his own serving of fried rice and orange chicken.
You look up at him from your spot, “How was team bonding today?”
Jake groans in response, clearly annoyed. “Stupid. I don’t get how doing trust falls and pyramid building is going to get us any closer. If anything, I almost FELL off that pyramid today!”
You don’t know why, but you find yourself admiring him and his soft features as he continues to rant about one of his teammates, specifically, the one who almost dropped him.
The way his messy hair, unkept from the rain ruining it, almost covers his eyes (but you tell yourself you like it this way, it looks more natural on him), the way the corners of his lips are always perked upwards (even when he’s ranting), the way his eyes sparkle whenever he’s truly passionate about whatever he’s talking about, the way his eyes look at you like–
“Stare much? Look, I get you can’t resist my good looks but at least be subtle about it,” he smirks at you as he takes another spoon of rice.
You break out of his trance and scoff at him.
“You’re cute when you rant,” you nonchalantly say as you move from your spot to mirror his actions and add more rice to your plate as well.  Jake’s stills at your sudden comment, unsure of how to respond. Lucky for him, you’re distracted by the mountain of food on your plate to even notice the blushing mess of a boy next to you.
“You know, you’re lucky you’re cute. Or else I’d deck you right here and now for ditching me after school today.”
Anddd there goes the moment. Leave it to you to follow up a compliment with a threat of violence.
Jake finds it cute anyways. He always finds you cute.
Jake narrows his eyes and lightly shoves you before an apology is written all over his face. “Sorry about that by the way. I feel awful about making you walk home when it was freezing out.”
“Nah, it’s okay. Sunghoon gave me a ride, actually. Did you know he does debate? I guess you learn something new everyday,” you ramble, unaware of the boy next to you getting tense at the sudden mention of the other’s name.
Up until now, Jake’s completely forgotten about Sunghoon's involvement in this entire scheme. In fact, the past 48 hours with you have felt so normal, so comfortable, he almost forgot about the deal in the first place.   “You think he has any clue?” Jake suddenly asks, referring to the plan.
You immediately know what he’s referring to, as Jake practically worded out your very own thoughts.
You shrug. “Not a single one. We’re practically William and Kate in his eyes. But honestly, that’s the least of my worries right now. I’m too distracted by my exams right now to care.”
Jake feels guilty for being satisfied with your answer. He’s 100% sure that if convincing Sunghoon took you two an entire lifetime of fake dating, he’d be all too willing to do it.
“Go to Jay’s party with me tomorrow,” he abruptly says, catching your attention as your mouth is stuffed. Cute.
He pokes your cheek. “It’ll get your mind off of work and plus, what’s more convincing than showing up to a party with your amazing boyfriend?” he wiggles his eyebrows at you. Jake doesn’t know where he gets his sudden surge of confidence. But he does know he loves calling himself your boyfriend...even if it’s for the time being.
Rolling your eyes and swatting his poking fingers away from your face, you ponder on his suggestion.
“You mean my annoying boyfriend,” you stick your tongue out at him. Jake takes a mental picture and hopes it never leaves his mind.
“But I guess you could be right. Maybe I can clear my head for the night before I study my ass off all weekend.”
Tumblr media
Friday, December 11th
The party does not clear your mind.
If anything, it gives you enough headaches to last you at least until the end of high-school.
You come to this revelation as you and Jake approach Jay’s home, a luxurious mansion sitting at the end of a cul-de-sac, lined with similarly luxurious palaces, located in an equally luxurious neighborhood.
You come to this revelation when you can already feel the pounding bass of music as you walk up Jay’s driveway.
You come to this revelation when, not even two seconds after entering Jay’s front doors––
“You’re here!” A buzzed Jay shouts at the two of you, causing the both of you to contemplate your past choices that brought you here today. Jay definitely isn’t straight up drunk yet, but Jake still makes a mental note to keep an eye on him tonight. Just in case.
The blonde-haired boy is quick to hand over two red solo cups of god knows what, to which you and Jake immediately put down on the nearest table after Jay walks away to greet the next incoming guests (you know, to not hurt his feelings).
You and Jake are lucky enough to have been around Jay and his parties long enough to know that going all out at these parties will not be pretty the next morning.
You cringe at the memory of last year, when you had to suffer from possibly the worst hangover of all hangovers after one of Jay’s parties. Jake will never let you forget how miserable you looked the next morning. His camera roll’s album titled “y/n blackmail pics” can vouch for that.
“Remind me again to never listen to you,” you almost have to shout at Jake over the thumping music. Jake laughs at your comment and tugs at your hand as he begins entering the house.
The two of you do your rounds of greetings to the people you know...and random underclassmen who you swear you have never seen before but somehow made it to this party. You’ve always questioned how Jay’s invite list worked. Maybe there isn’t one. That would explain how it looked like someone announced Jay was giving out free Teslas and the entire school got hold of the news.
“Thank god you guys are here,” you hear a voice come from behind the two of you as you guys leave the main room to enter the house’s smaller, but just as luxurious looking, den. You turn to see Heeseung with Sunghoon following closely behind, trying his best not to get swept away in the crowd of people.
The den is where you usually stayed during these parties. It’s not like there are rules of where people are allowed to party, by any means, but it’s like how a high-school’s cafeteria worked. There’s a mutual silent agreement of where everyone goes, and the den is where the party host and his friends went.
“Okay, is it just me, or is tonight’s party just a little...too..much?” Sunghoon asks as the four of you take your seats on the main couch of the room. Jake’s quick to make space for you next to him as you go to sit, but to his surprise, you find your home right on his lap.
“You said be convincing right?” you say into his ear as you settle yourself. Right. That’s totally why. Because you had to go along with the ruse. Obviously.
You shift a bit so you’re more facing sideways, not blocking off Jake’s line of vision as the boy himself is..well, calling him a rag doll might be excessive.
But he’s sure he looks like one right now, having lost all senses in his limbs, leaving him frozen underneath you.
Jake Sim is the epitome of politeness. He was raised in a family that taught him how to respectfully greet others, how to always offer food to others before eating it himself, how to properly treat a significant other. As a result, Jake grew up to be one of the sweetest, kindest, purest people to ever walk this earth.
(Relatively speaking, the earth is large, but so is Jake’s heart.)
But human-beings aren’t perfect, they must have a balance. A balance of pros and cons.
Sure, he can’t pack his own lunch and sometimes forgets to water the little succulent you gifted him that’s currently seated on his window sill. Sure, sometimes he’s too sweet for his own good, you know, like willing-to-be-your-fake-boyfriend too sweet. But aside from the minor details, Jake Sim doesn’t have many cons, no.
But he sure can be awkward.
And so because Jake Sim is sweet, kind, pure, and awkward, he is unsure of what to do with himself when you’re seated right on top of him.
As if you could read his befuddled mind, you take his arm that’s resting behind you to wrap around your waist as your support as you throw one of your arms around his shoulder. And throughout this entire adjustment, his widened eyes are staring right at you.
Bless this pure, pure boy.
Also bless the position you’re in, blocking the two other boys from directly seeing Jake’s face. Because if they were to catch glimpse of Jake’s expression right now, your cover might be blown, just like that. You’re lucky Heeseung and Sunghoon are distracted by another classmate who came up to them.
“Relax,” you sweetly laugh, cupping his chin with your free hand and lightly squeezing his cheeks. “You’re so adorably awkward.”
Jake pouts at you. “I am not awkward!”
“Right, and I’m totally dating you for real,” you playfully whisper at him, eliciting a poke at your waist in response.
Twenty minutes of people-watching-aka-“who do you think is gonna pass out first?”-from-your-spot-on-the-couch later, the four of you draw your attention to the rowdy party host you all have the honor of calling your friend––aka Jay––dancing (that is, if you call wildly swinging your limbs in all four directions dancing) in the middle of the den.
"Oh god, look at him," Sunghoon voices from besides you.
Heeseung's already filming the moment on his phone. Ah yes, technology. The best thing to ever happen to drunk teens' friends.
"He's so wasted," you throw your head back as you let out a laugh. “We should help the kid out.”
Poor Jay. He's not gonna hear the end of it after tonight.
"I don't know why he thinks these parties are such a good idea when he knows how trashed he's gonna be when he wakes up," Jake says, his hand naturally squeezing your waist as you giggle at his comment. "And how trashed the house will be."
Jay slumbers over to where the four of you are seated, and abruptly stops right in front of the couch.
"My best friends!" Jay happily cheers. “Having fun?”
“Watching you? Always,” you say to the boy who’s squeezing into a seat between you and Sunghoon, as if the small couch wasn’t already suffocating enough (and that’s with you on Jake’s lap).
“But for real though, you should probably lay off the drinks for now,” Heeseung insists. “For all our sakes.”
Sunghoon nods along and grabs the cup Jay’s currently nursing and sets it down where it’s out of Jay’s reach, much to his dismay. But the disappointment quickly leaves the dazed boy’s head, as his attention is now directed towards you and Jake.
“Well if it isn’t mom and dad,” Jay turns to face you and Jake, certainly amused by your seating arrangement.
“You know–” Jay points a finger at the two of you. “For a couple that’s certainly close, I haven’t seen you two kiss.”
Jake is immediately coughing, certainly not expecting that to come out of his friend’s mouth.
“Okay and your point is?” Jake frowns at Jay. If Jay wasn’t tipsy, Jake would’ve smacked the back of his head by now.
“I’m just saying...” the blonde responds, both hands up in the air as if Jake is accusing him of something, when in was, in fact, the opposite. “But nevermind, Jakey boy here is probably too innocent for such nonsense anyways.”
Yes, it’s confirmed. Once Jay sobers up tomorrow, Jake is driving over to his house (even though it’s a good ten minute drive from his own) just to smack him.
“What do you mean I’m too–”
Jake doesn’t finish his sentence. In fact, Jake doesn’t even remember what he was going to say.
Jake doesn’t think nor feel anything else other than your lips planted on his.
You’re pulling him in close, your hands cupping his face as his own are twitching on your waist, his mind flustered. You move your hands from his face to his neck, to which Jake immediately relaxes at.
Sure, you two are in the middle of a dumb high-school party, one filled with pounding music and shouting teenagers, but right now, in this moment, Jake can only feel you. And he doesn’t want the feeling to ever stop.
When you part, Jake’s eyes flicker from your eyes to your lips, his own parted in shock. He thinks he might pass out right here and now. He thinks his heart might explode right here and now. He thinks he might lov-
“Happy?” you turn to a satisfied Jay, ignoring the looks of amusement from Heesung and Sunghoon besides him.
“Well,” you pat Jake’s leg as you get up from your spot. “I’m gonna get us some drinks. Punch only, of course.”
Jake’s eyes are on you as you walk away, his face tinted pink from the adrenaline of it all, his heart racing.
Jake thinks back to three days ago, when he told himself that this idea of yours was going to be all fine. After all, it was only going to be for one week. Afterwards, he can move on with his life as if nothing happened.
But fast forward 72 hours later, 72 hours after you and Jake started this act, 72 hours after Jake told himself it’ll be all fine, Jake knows he was poorly mistaken.
Because 72 hours later, in the middle of a party that reeked of the combined smell of alcohol and sweat, Jake knows one thing and one thing for sure.
He never wants to move on from the feeling of being with you. He never wants to move on from this.
From you.
He’s screwed.
Tumblr media
Saturday, December 12th
When Jake wakes up, much later than he intended to, on Saturday morning, the first sensation he feels are his tingling lips, still in disbelief that they graced your own last night.
The second sensation being his pounding mind––it’s running through ten million thoughts at a time, telling him no last night wasn’t a dream.
Third: his heart beating so fast at the thought of you, he thinks he might beat out of his chest.
And fourth, a buzzing noise.
Jake blindly flounders his arm to the table beside him in hopes of finding the origin of the annoying sound, aka, his phone.
After knocking down multiple miscellaneous items on his nightstand (he makes a mental note to clean his room later), he successfully retrieves the item of search.
Jake squints at the bright screen, mind still cloudy from a mix of 1) being half-asleep, and 2) still processing what happened the night before.
y/n [11:10AM]: r u awake yet?
y/n [11:22AM]: imma take that as a no
y/n [11:35AM]: lemme know when ur up
jake [11:44AM]: just woke up sorry
jake [11:44AM]: are you okay? what’s up
y/n [11:45AM]: r u busy?
y/n [11:45AM]: kinda wanted to talk abt smth
jake [11:45AM]: uh well no im still in bed lmao
y/n [11:46AM]: cool im outside your door
Jake’s eyes widen as he processes your last few texts.
Talk? Outside his door?
Jake’s heart is nervously pounding as jumps out of bed and quickly puts on the first plaid flannel he finds. He scrambles to his mirror and gives his reflection a quick run-down.
He’s sporting your his favorite hoodie underneath the flannel that’s long overdue a wash and his tousled hair has seen better days, but he couldn't care less.
Before his mind can catch up to his actions, he’s rushing down the stairs, skipping two at a time and to this front door. Because he didn’t want to keep you waiting? Because he was too excited to see you? Maybe a mix of both. Definitely more of the latter, however.
He quickly runs a hand through his hair to try to fix it up as much as he can, to no avail, before opening the door to reveal you, sitting on the steps of his front porch.
“y/n,” he’s breathing heavily as you turn to greet him with your sweet smile he didn’t even realize he was missing. Is it possible to miss someone overnight? Jake concludes yes, it definitely is.
“Did you run down here or something?,” you question his out-of-breath state, a teasing tone laces the tip of your tongue.
“Or something,” Jake mutters as he closes the front door behind him to join you on the steps when you make no sign of moving. “Have you been out here all morning?”
“Not allll morning. I had a feeling you’d sleep in so I came around the time I first texted you. Would’ve knocked but didn’t wanna bother your family,” you hum, keeping your eyes trained on the peaceful scenery around you.
You’ve always loved Jake’s neighborhood, it brought you a sense of peace, a sense of home.
Or was that because it reminded you of Jake?
“You could never be a bother,” he quickly rebuttals as he takes his seat next to you on the steps.
You respond with a soft smile before turning your attention back to anything other than the boy next to you. Your mind seems to be lost in its own thoughts, Jake can tell by the distant look in your eyes.
The sound of birds chirping in the distance fills the silence that falls between the two of you.
Any other day, Jake would love this. He savors every second he’s with you, even if it’s just pure silence.
But this silence was different. It wasn’t the usual comforting, warm silence that the two of you share on a typical day. This one held tension, tension so thick that Jake doesn’t know where to begin thinking.
But here’s the thing. Jake doesn’t think.
Not when it comes to you.
He takes a deep breath. Rubs his hands together. Pats them on his lap. Turns towards you.
“Look, I-”
“I think I might like you.” The words come out of your mouth so fast, Jake’s positive he heard you wrong the first time around.
He whips his head to meet your eyes, your own already staring back at him, your bottom lip nervously tucked under your teeth.
“No, I––I do. I know I do. I’m sorry. I didn’t know how to tell you and I don’t think I’m doing a very good job right now,” the words are all of the sudden tumbling out of your mouth as if your brain flipped a switch and isn’t able to turn it off. “In hindsight, I should’ve known better to fake date my own best friend. But these past few days made me realize how much I love being with you. And not like how I’m always with you 24/7 before this entire thing started, but being with you. I even started getting that weird, bubbly feeling in my stomach every time I so much as heard your name. And then last night at the party, I realized afterwards that I wouldn’t have kissed you if some part of me didn’t see you in that way. Even if it meant Jay would’ve been on our asses all night if I didn’t. So yeah.”
You finish with a deep breath and look up at him to meet his widened eyes. Silence.
Jake thought he was braindead during last week’s history quiz. Jake thought he was braindead when he had to cram a semester’s worth of chemistry content the night before his exam. Heck, Jake thought he was braindead when you first told him about your idea of a fake dating him. But no, this is braindead.
He’s finally hearing what he’s been dreaming of for so long, and of all times, now his brain decides to shut off.
“Are you..uh..are you gonna say anything?” You’re nervously fumbling with your hands, desperate to distract yourself with anything else apart from his silent stare.
"Why are you sorry?" Jake says before his mind can think of anything else. He doesn't pay attention to his thumping heart that's one look-from-you away from exploding right then and there. "You didn't do anything wrong. If anything, you took the words right out of my mouth.”
Now you're staring at him with the wide eyes, the words processing in your mind.
Jake realizes he's waited too long to do this. A few years too long. He also realizes he shouldn't have put on that extra layer of a flannel. The nervous tension created by the two of you was suffocating enough, and being outside under the bright sun didn’t help.
"I like you too. God y/n, I like you too so much," Jake doesn't even care if his words are all sorts of messed up right now. He just needs you to get the idea. "I have for a while now.”
You let out a relieved sigh, ecstasy rushing through your blood. “Really? I think I have for a while too. I’m so stupid, it took me so long to realize it. It didn’t hit me until I realized how I felt around you, compared to the guy I’m supposed to actually have a crush on.”
Jake lets out a laugh, the tension immediately dissolving. “Hey, if it wasn’t for Sunghoon, I don’t think we’d be here right now.”
“You’re right, I’m too oblivious and you’re too awkward to actually make a move,” you wink at him. If his heart wasn’t fluttering at the sight of you, on his porch on a Saturday morning, confessing your feelings to him, Jake probably would’ve lightly shoved you away.
Instead, he’s turning to you with the most endeared look on his face, and you’re blushing underneath his gaze.
“What? Stare much?” You giggle, quoting the boy himself as you shyly duck your head to avoid his stare.
Jake gently grabs your chin to tilt your face towards his, and before you can process what’s happening, he suddenly meets your lips with his own, closing the gap between you two.
Jake thinks if the ground underneath him right now decided to open up and swallow him whole, he’d die happily.
Jake smiles against you, feeling comfort in ways he’ll never be able to achieve without you.
Your hands instinctively find their way into his hair, as one of his rests below your ear, thumb softly caressing your cheek, the other pulling you in by the waist. He’s naturally leaning into you, gravitating towards your warmth, unable to stop the giddy feeling bubbling in his stomach.
He doesn’t think the feeling will ever go away.
When you pull away to catch your breath, you rest your head against the nook of his neck, basking in his presence as his arms both find their way around your waist. You sigh in pleasure.
“Remember at the beginning of all of this, when you told me ‘Just try not to fall in love with me?’” Jake gently says. Jake feels the slight nod you give against his shoulder as you hum in response.
Jake whispers two more words into your ear, filling you with happiness and warmth you know you won’t be able to find through anyone––or anything––else.
“Too late.”

may i raise: artem mr 99% win rate senior attorney at 28 or whatever wing, driven to full blown laughter in the nxx headquarters. the reason: some dumb joke luke says that just so happens to cater to artem's Oddly Specific Sense of Humor
I LOVE THIS ASK SO MUCH BECAUSE I LOVE HUMOR. and humor theory, humor studies, linguistics of humor, senses of humor, just, oh man, you hit something here, anon. im kind of sorry for what this answer is going to be because i have thoughts and by god am i going to tell you all of them
i like to think a weird little thing happens, among the NXX Investigation Team: marius wants to know what exactly can make the other members of the team lose their fucking marbles.
mc was his first target and she was very easy to crack. she likes videos of animals doing cute yet silly things and was brought to wheezing laughter at a video of a golden retriever valiantly trying so hard to catch food in his mouth but missing every single time. with further prodding, marius also finds out shes into memes and jokes from medias shes familiar with.
vyn was next and he took a bit of thinking, from marius. marius needed to get vyn right on the first try because he's sure that if he fails once, vyn will give him THE most smarmy unimpressed expression ever and marius will have to be physically held back from punching him in the face. so he thinks about vyn's personality and background, thinks about maybe psychology jokes, but then marius comes to a conclusion that he believes enough to hazard a try. one day, when he and vyn are waiting in the nxx meeting room, marius sends him a tweet. with bated breath, he watches vyn notice it, open it, and then emit just the softest little "hehehe"
which, from vyn, is honestly as boisterous as his laughter is ever going to get.
the cause of the laughter? that video of a dude being pushed from a platform into the dark abyss, his scream echoing, from the Perfectly Cut Screams twitter.
because vyn is like, insane.
marius decides to leave artem for last (because duhhh marius has barely seen artem smile, is he even capable of laughter?? artem is going to be marius' Boss Level, he goes last) so next on the laugh train is luke.
but luke has figured out that marius is on a mission and luke, an arrogant shithead in his own way, refuses to let marius break him.
marius wants to STRANGLE LUKE. marius has sent him memes of olde, memes of new, comedy sketches, tiktok compilations, vine compilations, and luke does not laugh. marius is damn sure he would have, at some of those things, but luke is Refusing To Laugh and marius is so close to challenging him to like, a duel (shut up, he doesnt know okay, hes frustrated and he doesnt know how to express that like a normal person, get off his back) or something.
marius gets so desperate that he even resorts to what he thinks is the most groan-worthy form of humor: puns
very specific puns, because today marius is testing his theory that maybe luke's nerditude will betray him. puns about engineering and natural science, theyre all TERRIBLE but marius continues because he WILL WIN, GODDAMNIT and
theyre outside of the courthouse, waiting for mc to finish up (she just had a trial and she was awesome, as per usual, queen shit) so marius, vyn, luke, and artem are idling outside, and while waiting. marius is telling puns to luke. aggressively.
"you can give up, you know," luke smiles sweetly. "no shame in that."
"fuck you, next pun," marius scowls. "a raven has 17 primary wing feathers. these feathers are called pinions. and the crow only has 16 of those feathers. so the difference between a crow and a raven is..." marius winces. "...only a matter of a pinion."
"okay," luke says, and marius wants to punch him sooooo baaaad. "not only does that pun suck but it's also just. objectively wrong. both crows and ravens only have 10 primaries---"
"shut the hell up, birdbrain."
"---among those 10 primaries there a few that are longer and more distinct than the others, kind of looking like fingers, so to speak. crows have 5 evident finger feathers---"
"oh my god"
"---wheareas ravens only have 4. so i guess with some editing, the joke could still work. a more sound version though would be to compare crows and song sparrows, which do have the correct difference in primaries and---"
marius is about to flick luke in the forehead, but hes stopped by the strangest sound.
the sound of somebody having an asthma attack but like, through a kazoo or something.
marius, luke, and vyn turn to where artem is and he is, inexplicably, losing his shit. he continues to lose his shit actually for like 30 whole more seconds before he calms down enough to look up at everybody who is in turn looking at him like he's grown a second head.
"what?" artem says, puzzled.
"why the fuck were you laughing?" marius asks.
"because it was...funny," artem says as if this is obvious when it is NOT and then everybody in that moment realizes
that what makes artem laugh seems to be the act of over explaining jokes itself.
(and before anybody sends a follow up ask, marius' favorite joke is bofa.
artem scrunches his eyebrows. "what is bofa?"
marius grins, absolutely fucking DELIGHTED.)

So one of the things I wanted to talk about with the RK adaptations is tone
the manga got criticism for being too mature for a shonen audience
but the manga actually does have a sense of humor and doesn't take itself 100% seriously all of the time, not all of the jokes land and it does get more serious, but it still has a sense of humor even during a flashback to the Bakumatsu
Tumblr media Tumblr media
like this is Kenshin a year into being an assassin having the worst time of his life so far and we've seen him kill multiple people on screen now including just the chapter before, and here he is face planted and bowled over
I like the tone of the manga, it's probably the best thing choosing to be shonen does for it
and after the anime, it feels like all the adaptations ignore this
it's literally the one complaint I have about Trust and Betrayal, it's such a close adaptation of this particular section of the manga but these little bits of humor are entirely removed and like maybe as a stand alone piece the tone it did take is the right one but it isn't a stand alone, it's an adaptation
it feels like it got on the grim dark wave a little early and that bled into the rest of the adaptations where that tone really didn't work because the whole point of the Meiji era in the manga is that it's a better time than the Bakumatsu
the live action movies are slightly better in tone because they're like yeah we can have some humor, but it's just going to be Sano being an idiot we're going to take ourselves seriously
and I take issue with this difference in tone because it's characterization problem
as soon as an adaptation decides that it's serious, Kenshin's sense of humor is the first to go, it changes who he is as a character
in the manga, Kenshin makes fun of Kaoru's cooking and tugs on her ponytail and fakes a groin injury to get out of a fight and side eyes people when they call him a recluse and gets into stupid shit with Sano and complains like a kid about Hiko's teaching and delivers one liners both badass and cheesy when he gets done doing a cool move and it matters that he's not only genial outside of battle and stoic or angry during battle, he has a personality
and beyond it being part of his characterization, it provides continuity to his character, the manga (unfortunately imo) starts the series by almost treating Kenshin slipping into bad habits during battle as if he is becoming Battousai like it's a separate personality, but that dies down over time and when you get to the flashback and you see Kenshin face planted and bowled over you see that even during the Bakumatsu and performing assassinations at night, Kenshin is still Kenshin
Trust and Betrayal removing Kenshin's humor is the most forgivable as its in the Bakumatsu and doesn't need to concern itself with continuity of personality with Kenshin
Reflection is forever and always unredeemable and the New Kyoto Arc honestly Kenshin's like barely in it somehow so like whatever
but the live action movies are much less forgivable, after rewatching them I don't like their portrayal of Kenshin at all
like they'll allow some humor (more than the OVAs at least) and let Kenshin be smiley as a rurouni and say oro when weird shit happens, but the only humor he's allowed to have is a little physical comedy when he's pretending he's not as good as he really is
except in the movies when he's doing that, it kind of feels like the movies are making fun of his attackers (Kaoru and Misao stand out but it happens to Sano too) because Kenshin's not allowed to be an idiot in the movies, he has to be a cool hero all of the time
like in the manga, Kaoru ends up seeing the sakabatou because Kenshin straight up jumped backwards into a fence and it's quick and treated like his mistake, he didn't know what was behind him when he jumped and that's his introduction, this dude's super good at killing people watch him prove it by immediately bashing his head on a fence
in the movie, there's no obstacles around them save a tree, it's a much longer scene, and it's choreographed like a Buster Keaton routine except Kenshin doesn't seem particularly fast so it makes Kaoru look extra pathetic for not catching him, it changes from Kenshin making a mistake to Kenshin messing with Kaoru and it's not the intro, the movie has already set its tone and Kenshin's personality and vow have already been established even if he hasn't fought in the Meiji era at that point yet
I would just like directors to stop making humor the enemy of good characterization and storytelling, like the only options are not grim dark or MCU quips I swear

The Compound, 2023, 3:16pm
It probably would have been better to grieve as a group, to help each other in understanding what just happened, to lean on each other. But the second you saw Clint fall to his knees without Natasha beside him, soul stone in hand and face miserable, like he saw a wandering ghost in need of help, you started to walk backwards off the platform.
You stumbled and teetered before finding balance against the railing. No one seemed to notice you, all wrapped in their own suffocating grief, and you abandoned the group to run across the grounds of the compound. It wasn’t until you ended up by the lake that you realized you were crying, tears flowing but face tough and angry, chest heaving as you came to a stop. You just stared at the ground, shaking hands still gloved and teammates still back at the compound and - oh, god Clint, oh god, oh god, oh god.
Chest still tight and finding it harder to breathe, you shut your eyes and leaned against the nearest tree. Several minutes flew by, the only sounds that of your suit’s fabric stretching and retracting as your breathing grew slower. And the grief that enveloped you almost instantly turned into fury, and it hurt, it hurt, but you were just so damn angry that you found yourself wishing it was you. Natasha didn’t deserve this, and neither you, but you would give anything to just believe for a second that this couldn’t be real.
But you all knew the risks. This was inevitable. And you were so angry.
Voices startled you from your thoughts and you watched your teammates pace toward the dock, ideas bouncing from one head to another as they strategized ways to reverse this. But Clint quickly shut them up, telling them that no matter what they did, a sacrifice was a sacrifice and that was the end of it.
“It was supposed to be me.”
And finally someone said it, because it should have been anyone but Natasha, and that thought caused bile to burn your throat and why in the world could you not control your breathing?
You ran from your spot, legs carrying you to the gardens and burning as you increased speed. You collapsed near the lake, shredding your suit until you were left in the comfortable t-shirt and leggings underneath, sounds of the garden ringing in your ears.
The time of day could be told by the purple and orange streaks painting the sky, evening dew on the plants near your feet and the sound of a cricket’s chirp cutting through the silence. You counted the hours this way, focusing on the colors and sounds of the outside world that for some reason, didn’t feel like your own anymore. Guilt latched onto your core as you found yourself falling into the therapeutic senses of it all, eyes closing and a silent plea of ‘I’m so sorry, Nat’ escaping your lips. The tears you had shed hours ago were now dry, creating a minor strain of your skin, noticeable as you moved your face.
Legs dangling from the dock and eyes simply watching the sky change shades, you barely heard the soft footsteps behind you. And you smiled, surprised that it took your teammates this long to recognize your absence.
Thor grumbled below his breath as he sat beside you, his feet barely touching the water. You swung your legs together, impossibly empty yet consumed minds working behind such sad eyes.
“You want to jump in and freeze? It’s autumn, it’s cold, we’ll probably die from hypothermia.”
Your body lunged forward lightly as a tiny laugh left your throat, a small smile twitching on the corner of your lips. “Yeah, I’m down.”
Thor grinned at your equally dark response, reaching over and gripping your hand in his. He rubbed small circles into your knuckles and resumed watching the clouds shift.
You looked down at your conjoined hands, wondering why he came after you in the first place. Still, you squeezed his hand back and relaxed in the feeling.
“Doesn’t seem worth it anymore.”
Thor turned his head, “She traded her soul for trillions of others who had no choice.”
You mumbled, “Still isn’t fair.”
Thor scooted closer to you and wrapped his arm around your shoulder, grinning when you accepted the invitation to lean into him.
“None of this fair. We have one more fight, Y/N.”
You sighed, ready to complain and run back to the compound to lay under a mountain of blankets, wallowing in self-pity and increasing depression.
“Look at me,” Thor instructed, gently pulling away from you. “I know what you’re feeling. I too want to sleep and never wake up.”
Your face dropped, sympathy flooding your eyes. You raised a hand to lay your palm on his cheek, wiping away the stray tear he had let slip. “You don’t have to be so strong.”
Thor leaned into the feeling of your warm hand and he gave you a sad smirk. “I know. But it’s all we know how to be.”
Thor could sense your depleting energy, and as much as he wanted to carry you to your bed and wrap a blanket around you, cup of tea ready and some comedy movie on repeat, he had to persuade you. There was one more fight that needed to be fought.
“Breathe, and think of the first thing that brings you comfort. Lean into that, let it give you strength, and use it.”
You turned to him, prepared to protest, but Thor simply gripped your face in his hands, allowing you to do the same. He rested his forehead against yours. “Think and use it.”
You nodded, still apprehensive to the idea, but you shut your eyes and thought. New and old friends. It could have been anything - Natasha’s final and unknown farewell, Wanda’s loud laugh as she fought Sam (who was on Steve’s shoulders and her on Bucky’s) and tried pushing him into the water, or even Tony’s face as he realized he forgot to put the lid over the blender before turning it on - anything, but you held onto the first flash of joy your mind recalled.
The sudden image of Steve’s face frightened you. Not because Steve himself was scary, but because the more you thought of him, the more prepared you were for the final battle. You had something to fight for. Someone. You simply saw Steve - Steve who tucked his knees up to his chest when he sketched the trees outside his bedroom window - and how he would put his pencil down and march toward you because ‘don’t you ever knock?’, and push you out of his room as you laughed and apologized at the same time.
“Use it,” Thor repeated. You opened your eyes.
So you wiped your tears and changed back into your suit, hair now held in a ponytail and new gun on your hip. Your breath hitched as Bruce lifted the gauntlet to put it on, his eyes swimming with fear but also determination, and you found yourself glancing at Steve. He felt eyes on him, and he found yours, and something alerted you of the shift. Perhaps this was his last straw, it was yours too, but this was different. You wanted to go back to Thor and ask him to help you find that memory again, ‘tell me to imagine Steve again, Steve with his soft face and gentle hands, Steve who doesn’t look like he’s just seen a ghost!’. A perfect stranger, and before you could ponder such a drastic change, Bruce began screaming in agony. You stood behind Tony, allowing Bruce’s screams to fuel your energy, because you had one more fight.
Just one more.
A Forest in Iowa, 2025, 6:47am
You awoke with a strangled groan, a crick in the neck that needed to be remedied by a quick snap to the opposite side and a very numb ass. You dreaded having to remove your arms from the warmth the blanket provided, but the quicker you turned the car on you could relax. You leaned over and did so, the tingles along your lower back and bottom begging you to get out of the car. Steve was startled awake from the sudden rumble of the engine, alert within seconds and examining his surroundings.
You practically crawled out the car and stretched every muscle, even muscles you didn’t know could become inflamed, and started walking around the campsite while rubbing your palms on your sore ass. Steve joined you outside after a few minutes, laughing at the random stretches you were performing.
“Laugh all you want, Rogers but if I don’t get this knot out my ass then any danger we encounter you’re taking out alone.”
“Do you need help?”
You snapped your body back up, an involuntary loud cackle rising from your throat. “That would be a treat.”
Steve rolled his eyes and began stretching himself, arms bent and raised behind his head as he tugged on his elbows. “I just meant in general. Not specifically your ass.”
You giggled at his innocence, walking back to the car and grabbing the blanket you had regretfully crawled from. You wrapped it around your shoulders and made your way back to Steve, extending your right leg out and dipping your upper body down to continue the stretch. You heard the sudden ‘pop!’ of your hip, surprising both you and Steve. You screamed in slight but joyful surprise, pulling yourself back up to look at Steve. He just stared back, amazement and a little concern in his face. He scrunched his nose and smiled wide.
“That hurt?”
You shook your head ‘no’ and extended your left leg now, bending down and stretching the same way. Again, ‘pop!’
And Steve had to walk away in complete astonishment, hands covering his ears and a comical expression on his face, because it just sounded so weird.
You stopped at the first secluded diner you stumbled upon, barely open for the morning and understaffed. There was a lonely waitress behind the counter folding napkins and cleaning the leftover coffee grounds someone forgot to clean before her. She looked about thirty, slightly dark circles under her eyes, but presented a cheerful smile as you and Steve walked through the door. If she was surprised with two Avengers walking into her place of work, she did an excellent job at hiding it.
“What can I get you two?”
You took a seat on the light blue swivel chair at the counter and flashed the waitress a kind smile as you spoke. Her name tag read ‘Martha’. “Coffee and tea to start with, please.”
She clicked the coffee maker on and went to retrieve a kettle from the back, leaving you and Steve alone.
“You hungry?” you asked.
Steve plopped down in the chair beside you, already grabbing the two sugar packets he would put into his tea. “Starved.”
You rolled your eyes, “You were the one who refused the last granola bar.”
“You said you were hungry.”
“Aw, you starved yourself for me?”
Steve huffed in annoyance, playing with his sugar packets and head hung low to avoid recognition from incoming customers. You stared at him longer than usual, studying the way his jaw ticked every so often and how he would sniff at nothing only to pass the time and countless thoughts. You reached over and grabbed a handful of sugar packets, piling them in between you and the super soldier, and began constructing the base of a tower. It seemed to snap Steve out of whatever thought he had, and he quickly became interested. He helped steady the base, careful fingers adding to the height. You two worked in silent cooperation, little giggles filling the empty and quiet diner.
Martha returned with two mugs and went to grab both the freshly made coffee and tea. She watched as you and Steve constructed your sugar packet tower, a smirk on her face as she poured your drinks. “Anything to eat?”
And it was one of the best meals you had. The sheer amount of grease on those sausages and hash browns warmed your once empty stomach and meshed with the coffee in the most delightful way. You almost wanted to ask for seconds, those scrambled eggs not nearly enough, but the longer you stalled the longer the ride on the freeway was going to be.
You paid and left a generous tip, finishing the remaining amount of coffee in your mug. Steve had gone to the restroom, your sugar packet tower still standing tall and proud. It didn’t seem like Martha was going to knock it down any time soon. The bell over the front door dinged with a new arrival, the cold air from outside making you clutch your hot mug tighter.
You glanced over your shoulder out of instinct. The man looked to be in his mid-forties, a trucker no doubt, and had only the slightest hint of an unwashed smell. He took a place at the counter a few seats away from you, throwing his hat down and begging Martha to bring him a coffee of his own. You took a sip from your mug.
“Woah, you’re an Avenger, aren’t you?”
Busted.
“Nope.”
The man scooted a few seats closer, eyes now wide awake. He pointed at you in an almost accusatory manner, but voice still cheery. “No, seriously - I’ve seen your face in the news and everything!”
You set your coffee down and saw the look of pity Martha was throwing you from across the counter. “You want a picture or something?”
The man laughed now, a nasty smirk on his face. “Or something would be nice.”
Your face scrunched and your shoulders immediately tensed. “You better not be implying-?”
“Woah, hey, no harm here! I just mean, you’re here alone and I’m here alone…”
You looked away from him, taking a big swig from your mug. The burn down your throat was somewhat therapeutic. “I’ll do the picture or else I start screaming.”
“I’d love to hear that.”
Steve rounded the corner when he heard a full-on conversation he was sure just started during his absence. He almost cursed himself for leaving you alone during such an important mission, even if it was to urinate. He could have had you standing outside the men’s restroom just to feel more secure of your well-being. Still, he remained behind the wall and listened to the conversation. If Steve was to interrupt before you could get your own kicks in, then he wouldn’t hear the end of it.
‘I had him on the ropes!’
‘Excuse me for assisting a teammate!’
‘Get bent!’
Yeah, Steve would let you kick this person’s ass and brag about it instead of yapping at him.
You groaned, hoping the loud sound would make the man retreat back to his breakfast. “Bet you would.”
But it seemed to encourage him more, and he stepped closer to lean on the counter and bump your shoulder with his. You kept your eyes trained on your abandoned coffee.
“C’mon, I’m just a lonely trucker trying to make ends meet. I think I deserve some kind of reward.”
You put on your best fake smile, tilting your head towards him. You flashed your teeth, a great distraction for him as you reached into your pocket for your throwing knife. “That picture offer seems to be wearing very, very thin, dude.”
He placed his dirty hand on your shoulder, squeezing as he spoke in a low whisper. “Guess that’s for the best.”
His hand was immediately twisted from your shoulder, the sound of his instant wail frightening poor Martha. You knew what had happened, and as chill as ever, you swiveled the chair around casually.
The man groaned in discomfort, “Woah, hey! - oh my god.”
Steve’s single hand was crushing his, digits begging for mercy as each second Steve squeezed even harder. He could feel the man’s knuckles start to crack painfully. “Yeah, ‘oh my god’. Touch her again and I’ll total your truck.”
The man shook his head violently, “We were just talking!”
“Nuh-uh,” you chuckled, elbows resting on the counter behind you.
“C’mon Cap, you gotta believe me!” The man tried to sprinkle some humor on the situation, which only caused Steve to shove him into a booth, hand still gripping his.
Steve towered over him now as the man had no choice but to fall back into the booth. “That’s just it - I don’t.”
The man looked from Steve’s face, to yours, to his own purpling and bruising hand. “What are you two doing out in the middle of nowhere anyway? Danger nearby?”
You stood from your seat and stood beside Steve, arms crossed and a smirk on your face. “Look, bud - tell anyone you saw us and you’ll regret it.”
And like the idiot he was, even with Steve’s hand cramping down on him, he still countered. “Are you threatening me?”
Steve couldn’t believe this guy. Of course, he could squeeze harder and just yank this guy’s fingers clean off, but he wasn’t that evil. The guy was just a creep and a pervert, which in Steve’s moral compass, called for a few cuts and scrapes and not a permanent disability.
“Yup, and I tend to have some creative ways of framing people.”
“C’mon, I know you can hit harder than that!”
Steve threw a few more punches at the cushion Bucky was holding up, boxing gloves nearly sliding from his fists because of their large size.
“One more, there we go!”
Bucky lowered the cushion as Steve threw his last punch, racing toward the bench to fetch Steve’s inhaler and hand it to the younger boy.
“I could have gone longer.”
Bucky smiled at his best friend, “I’m sure you could have but you were about to pop a lung and I love you too much to see you go out that way, pal.”
Steve took a drag of his inhaler at the same time he tried to wrap his arm around Bucky’s neck. But the older boy was quicker and lunged out of the way, taking a celebratory light jog around the ring for such minimal effort on his part. Steve just glared at him, a small smirk forming as Bucky started chanting.
“Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes, defenders of America, the world, we avenge the fallen!”
Steve let Bucky exaggerate, inhaler finally working enough for him to take a big swig of water. “You really think we’ll save the world?”
Bucky held his chest and laughed loudly, “America isn’t going to war anytime soon, pal. Let’s focus on rescuing dames from bullies and perverts first!”
     “Captain, you gonna let her-?”
You snapped your fingers in his face to get his wandering eyes back on you, “I’m speaking to you.”
Steve couldn’t hide his grin, a slight blush growing on his cheeks due to your authoritative tone. He had heard you speak this way countless times, roughing up some guy on the opposite side whenever they proved difficult. Although you weren’t currently throwing punches, Steve was proud nonetheless.
You continued, “Tell anyone and I’ll tell the cops you tried selling us drugs.”
The man’s eyes widened comically, “What? I don’t even have-”
You reached into your back pocket and revealed a tiny baggy half-full of white powder. Martha’s tiny giggle reminded the man that he had an audience, a possible witness, but her overall lack of involvement was enough to know he was alone in this. “Come again? You were saying something?”
The man gritted his yellowing teeth, “No fucking way.”
You jiggled the baggy closer to his face, watching in amusement as he whipped his head to the side as if it was poison. “Way. I’ll stash it in your beloved truck where only the dogs can smell it.”
Steve, hands still gripping the man out of instinct, was completely shocked. He watched the baggy in the most peculiar way - analyzing its size, crumpled appearance, even the way the tiny specks of white dust latched onto the moisture inside, resembling salt or sugar. Obviously he knew what product you handled, but he had never seen it up close and personal unless he was in the evidence locker room. Maybe ‘shock’ wasn’t used with negative connotation, because Steve wanted to both laugh at your threat and snatch the baggy from you to ensure no other soul saw you handling it.
The man looked from both you and Steve, determined expression falling as he ran out of viable options. He sighed in defeat, “Okay.”
You snatched the baggy away from his face and pocketed it. You smiled at him with such brightness, as if you hadn’t just threatened to ruin his life. “Cool, nice meeting you!”
Steve let him go and walked back to his original seat to pick up his coat. He ignored the annoying babbling from across the diner, choosing to grab your belongings too and smiling at Martha as he took his leave. You rushed after him, turning back to wave at Martha.
“Best coffee ever, Martha!”
You settled into the car and continued your drive fairly easily, a comfortable silence between you two. Steve didn’t know if it was the jitters from the coffee - not like he was really affected by caffeine anyway - or the effects from the uncomfortable situation he should have pulled you from sooner, because next thing he knew his voice was an octave higher and cracking. “So, you just had that shit in your back pocket this whole time?”
You choked on your laugh and covered your mouth, looking up from your phone and at him. You shared the same playful look in your eyes.
You shrugged, “You never know when you might need it.”
Steve shook his head but kept the same tiny grin, “Do you…?”
The playfulness somewhat subsided, and you shifted uncomfortably in your seat. The seatbelt was digging into your right breast and side of your neck. Steve waited for your response, the question an entirely personal one. He was about to retract it, apologize and focus on the freeway for the remainder of your trip, but you cleared your throat.
“Once. But I was young, curious, and it burned like hell so I didn’t do it again.”
You were fourteen, still unsure of yourself and the world around you, clinging onto the inner child your environment was beginning to kill. You remember running through the mansion, the ranches, random hotels and random weddings - a dozen other children and teenagers running alongside you, each avoiding interaction with those their guardians had told them to avoid. And you remembered the day you wanted to enter your bedroom to retrieve your little iPod shuffle, the door resisting as you pushed. Your strength ultimately won, revealing a bedroom floor full of all types of guns, grenades, and automatic rifles. You didn’t scare easily, you never had, but that angered and annoyed you greatly. That was your room, your own sacred space to avoid confrontation, and it had been tainted. You had stepped over the guns carefully and reached your bedside table. Attaching your headphones to the device and clicking shuffle, you had almost missed the packages of drugs laying on your white bedsheet. Where you slept.
More out of anger than curiosity, you had carefully poked a hole in one of those taped packages and rubbed it over your teeth and gums like you saw some of your father’s men do. The sensation was weird, more numb than anything, and although you wanted it to taste like the flour you used for baking, it didn’t. So you picked a small portion under your pinky nail and sniffed. It burned, similar to when you burped and the carbonation came back up through your nose, and you wanted to scream. An instant headache, an unknown high, and a very angry Seda appeared around the same moment.
“Why do you carry it now?” Steve asked.
You snapped yourself out of the flashback, “My father knows we’re traveling by car. We’ll be arriving in the next day or so. He could call at any time and tell me he needs someone taken out in whatever state we’re currently passing through.”
Steve hummed, face showing discomfort. “Taken out? Do you often plant drugs on innocent people?”
You huffed, “Hardly innocent. Just drug dealers or other smugglers that got on his bad side.”
You played with the button to roll down the window, watching the moisture from water droplets begin to dry and leave their smudge. You continued, “Quick drop into a glove compartment or someone’s pocket while they’re distracted usually does the trick.”
Steve’s shoulders relaxed, “Guess I can understand that.”
You left the window slightly open, the cold air nipping at your cheeks. The smell of rain was prominent. “I do my research before, you know. I don’t just frame random people.”
Your soft voice suddenly hurt Steve, almost like you were accusing him of thinking of you as evil. Whether you discussed your undercover work with him or not, he would never assume you escaped morals. You were an Avenger after all, and even though no one knew, Tony used to have a huge part in the decision-making process with Fury. And if Tony had seen something in you, then he trusted him. “I know.”
“Thank you, by the way. I may not look it, but he did scare me for a sec.”
Steve sighed, “We’re partners, Y/N. I would never let anything or anyone hurt you.”
You rolled your eyes at his sincerity, smiling toward him but avoiding his gaze. “Still… thanks.”
“No problem. Your playlist this time?”
You passed the next several hours listening to mostly instrumental music, the foggy and dense atmosphere of each state you drove through providing the same calm feeling. It was winter after all, and although California didn’t have quite as much snow as the midwest, it certainly had rain. The drive consisted of small talk about your surroundings, about your friends, about the most random things you could fill into a twelve hour time stamp. You played with the seat warmers, laughing when Steve jumped a foot in the air when his got a little too hot for his liking. And his cursing. When you first met Steve, he didn’t curse all that much unless it was in the middle of a fight or when he was truly angry. But now, especially after these last couple of years, his vocabulary expanded to new inappropriate lengths. You didn’t mind, no, it made the conversations all that more interesting.
So when Steve grumbled under his breath as he spilled crumbs from his granola bar onto the passenger seat (you had volunteered driving the sixth hour in), and mumbled “jesus fucking christ”, you gave him such a bright smile with equally bright eyes that had Steve scrunching his eyebrows together and he leaned away from you, a blush crawling up his neck.
‘What?’
‘You took the lord’s name in vain.’
‘Yeah, so what?’
‘Over a granola bar.’
‘... I see your point.’
You stopped about an hour away from the hotel, legs cramping and backs strained but overall happy that no one else on the journey recognized you two. There had been that kid who paused in the aisle of a small gas station, wide eyes staring up at both you and Steve as you reached for a bag of chips. Steve had crouched down to his height, chatting for a few seconds before giving him a small fist bump. You smiled at the kid, bringing your finger up to your mouth to mime a tiny ‘shh’, and followed Steve out the store after paying.
You spent the next few minutes stretching, the sudden pops of your hips causing Steve to create as much of a fuss he had done before.
‘Is that normal?’
‘It’s a ball and socket joint, they crack.’
‘So violently?’
‘It actually feels awesome.’
The California air was musty this season, humid and wet. The smell of various weeds and tree bark overpowered anything else, and although there was moisture in the air, the coldness dried your eyes. You found yourself blinking multiple times to accumulate some tears, and you reached into your backpack to reapply some lip gloss. You donned a simple, forest green tracksuit with a knitted sweater over it all, layers and layers to combat the cold breeze. Steve wore a similar knitted sweater, but he seemed less fazed by the cold than you were.
“So, how much do you trust this person?”
You snapped your head up from your lazy resting and asked Steve to repeat his question. Once heard, you shrugged and answered. “About ninety-five percent.”
Steve chuckled and wrapped his arms over his chest, “Will it ever be a hundred? C’mon.”
You grinned back and took a deep breath, chilly air slightly burning your sinuses. “They took a bullet for me once. And they didn’t have to.”
You were meeting your main contact of the mission. Maribel, a childhood friend, a friend who ultimately took a bullet for you to keep your undercover identity a secret. You could have been compromised, forced to stand trial in front of your father and his men, but she took the fall. After going off the grid and living in Madripoor for about six years, she had contacted you after the snap. Her relief, and her eagerness for revenge, all were to your benefit. So you fed her any information you could, both vowing to fuck with your father in any means. And since you were the only person on the inside with ties to the Avengers, having Maribel be an insider with no ties ultimately helped prepare your case. Two sides, two people with shared experiences, all truth. And you were going to do everything in your power to clear her name and get her a good deal.
“So, why isn’t it a hundred?”
“I haven’t trusted anyone a full one-hundred percent since SHIELD was compromised.”
Steve’s voice dropped a little, but you could still make out his teasing tone. “Do you trust me?”
“It wavers.”
“Wait-”
You interrupted and pointed toward the trail hidden by the trees, “There she is.”
Maribel had changed immensely since you last saw her. Her natural ginger hair was now dyed a dark brown, her freckles seeming to have multiplied and draped themselves from her cheeks and down her neck, over her shoulders, etc. She wore all black, leather jacket and leather boots, loose strands of hair blocking the view of shoulder buttons and shoulder pockets. She looked younger, more refreshed in her natural glow, healthy even. You found yourself breathing a sigh of relief, chest tightening with genuine love as she flashed you a wide smile. You gave her a tight hug, patting her back and welcoming her back to the states. She smelled of the bushes she had to track through to get here.
She released you from her tight grip and looked over at Steve, giving him an almost teasing look. “Heard you were invited. Nice to meet you Captain.”
Steve shook her hand, “Pleasure’s all mine.”
She chuckled and winked at him, “Y/N inform you about me? How do I sound? Look?”
Steve seemed to be affected the same way you had, an involuntarily reddening of his cheeks giving him away. “Like a possible ally.”
Maribel scoffed playfully, “I’ll take what I can get.”
“Status?” you asked.
Maribel handed you the file she carried, “Hotel is secure. Neighboring cities have no alerts about your arrival or of the upcoming celebration. Everything’s pretty quiet.”
You smirked, looking over to Steve in recognition of what that meant. “Of course it is. He wouldn’t dare kill any U.S citizens on American soil.”
“Heard he got sloppy,” Maribel sang, rocking back and forth on her heels.
“Let’s hope it’s to our benefit. You meet up with the agent in charge I told you about?”
Maribel nodded, “Torres is set up a few miles from the venue. He’s been running surveillance for about three days already.”
“If you can’t get into contact with me, Torres is your second. Got it? He reports back to Sam.”
Maribel agreed, “Got it. So, what’s the plan for the rest of the week?”
“Steve and I will draft a report tomorrow morning and send you the encrypted file.”
“Can’t wait. It’s nice to see you again, Y/N,” she smiled, bringing you back into a tight hug. Steve simply stood to the side, listening around for any disturbances.
“Likewise,” you spoke, sad to watch her walk away and back toward the hidden path. Her feet crunched on some fallen leaves purposefully. You suddenly remembered the bit of information that could be useful if Maribel were to encounter an old foe.
You called out to her, “Oh, and if anybody asks - Steve is my boyfriend and you’ve known about it for three years now!”
Steve hid his face behind his hand, looking down to his feet to avoid Maribel’s teasing and humorous expression. “Lucky you!”
The hotel was nicer than you expected, the pictures on google doing little to showcase just how grand it really was. With some of your savings and a little money under the table from Fury, you were able to book a single bedroom with two beds for five nights. Obviously, the wedding night wasn’t counted as the two of you were going to have to haul ass immediately, but five nights in this grand arena seemed vacation enough.
From the outside, it seemed like any chain hotel, but the inside provided a more Gothic feel. It compared to a Vegas type, but also your typical breakfast inn. It was an odd combination, but you figured they had that liberty since it was a really quiet part of the city and didn’t see many regular customers.
You lugged your suitcases through the elevator doors and pressed the button for the seventh floor, looking around for the security cameras in the corner. You spotted the red light blinking and immediately smiled and waved.
“Steve, say hi to Bucky.”
Steve looked at the camera and raised an eyebrow, giving a small wave. “You know regular security can see us, too?”
“Can’t hear us, though. Neither can Bucky.”
“So, if I were to call him a thousand bad words right now, he wouldn’t know?”
You squinted at Steve as the elevator dinged, “He can still read our lips.”
“That adds to the fun!”
The room was big enough to set up an extra pull-out table and computer in the corner, the only separate part being the bathroom to the side of the entrance door. The beds were both queen sized, multiple throw pillows scattered on top and two bedside tables in the middle.
You rushed inside and threw your suitcase carelessly at the foot of the bed closest to the door, and ran to leap in the air and land face first on the cushy mattress. “Heaven!”
Steve picked up your suitcase and set it against the wall, “Glad to see you’re already making yourself at home.”
You rolled over and pressed some pillows to your chest, “You ever plopped yourself down onto a hotel bed? Do it!”
Steve tilted his head slightly, reluctant to the idea. “What if I break it?”
You burst out laughing, “Oh my god, I didn’t even think of that.”
Steve sighed, shoulders sagging as he gave in. “Promise you won’t laugh if I break it?”
“Do you know me?”
Steve rolled his eyes and braced himself against the wall, pushing himself off and leaping into the air only lightly, crashing onto the bed the same way you did. The bed creaked and made a horrible sound. But it held, the wood proving stronger than you thought.
“Okay, I see the pleasure in that,” Steve laughed, face still smushed inside the mountain of pillows. You lay in your own beds for about an hour, naps wholeheartedly enforced.
A quick knock on your hotel door snapped you from your short slumber. You rolled over with a groan, looking over your shoulder at a still snoring Steve. His age was catching up to him alright, because he totally should have woken up from that. You opened the door and greeted Torres, allowing him to step inside. He lugged in a hotel cart with a heavy drape over it, careful in not hitting the doorway.
“Agent Y/L/N, it’s so great to see you again!”
Now Steve was awake.
“You too! I thought our last rendezvous was cut too short,” you teased, sticking your bottom lip out and giving him puppy-dog eyes. Torres blushed under your gaze but shook his head at your flirting.
“Well, here we go again! Got everything you need right here.”
He revealed the desktop computer and multiple other monitors, radios, a printer, and earpieces.
“Looks like Christmas morning,” you joked, helping Torres set up.
“Sorry for waking you, Captain. Sam said I had to deliver all this before nighttime.”
Steve waved his apology off, “Don’t worry about it. Thanks for doing this.”
“Anything.”
You went over the itinerary for the rest of the week and once Torres announced his leave, you handed him the extra key card you had asked for.
“If you need anything, or we don’t radio in at the times we set up, you use it. Okay?”
Torres gave you a sincere smile, tucking the key card into his coat pocket. “You can count on me.”
Once Torres left the room, Steve spoke. “Watch him barge in when one of us is showering.”
“Let’s hope we don’t scar the poor kid.”
It took about two hours to set up all the tech and connect it all back to the compound. You video chatted with Bucky and Scott and discussed the itinerary tomorrow. You double-checked mic connections, triple-checked police reports filed within the last few hours, and reviewed spy cam footage Torres had taken of the ranch. It was basically homework.
“We have to set up our backstories, our so-called relationship, you have to know everything.”
Steve hummed, tapping his pen on the table. “Where do we start?”
“They might ask why you help me in the first place.”
“Fuck America, that’s why.”
You stuttered, voice timid and eyebrows high. “O-oh?”
Steve laughed at your reaction. He leaned in with confidence, “I mean, your father grew up close to a similar time I did. He’s old fashioned, no?”
“Kind of. He’s old so he hates the new clothing styles, women’s rights, the works,” you shrugged.
“Wow, he sounds worse the more you speak about him.” You rolled your eyes at Steve and his sarcastic tone. “So I can say America just changed way too much since I came out of the ice.”
You nodded and rapidly wrote the basics of the backstory into your notepad. “Okay. But I hope you know you’re gonna have to play into that conservative part, especially with him and Seda.”
“What do you mean?”
You smirked at him and cocked an eyebrow, “You gotta be drowning in toxic masculinity.”
“Fuck, really?”
You almost wanted to lean over and slap his shoulder. It was then that you realized how disconnected Steve really was to this whole situation, never once meeting your father or his minions. He didn’t know the shit that went down when he was in hiding, only the basics, and scaring him now didn’t seem like a great idea.
“Really. You’re playing the role of my boyfriend in a male-dominated drug war. They think you’re in charge, which is technically correct to assume. Your rank is higher, your status is higher, so your personality needs to match that or else you won’t gain their trust.”
Steve shifted uncomfortably on the sofa, “I don’t know the first thing about disrespecting women.”
You snorted, “I’m gonna be honest and say that was the most adorable shit I’ve ever heard.”
“Stop it.”
You spoke with your hands, fingers dancing as a way to sprinkle some sensitivity on the issue. “Order me around. Tell me when it’s time to leave, be possessive if anyone wants to get my attention, interrupt me.”
“Y/N, I don’t think I can do that.”
“You technically already do it.”
Steve blinked, “Excuse me?”
You lowered your voice to explain, “You’re my Captain. You give me orders on the field. You shut me up when I’m too loud or turning something serious into a joke.”
He shifted again, “But I don’t do it to dominate you.”
“I know you don’t. Trust me.”
“So, I gotta become an asshole?”
You nodded, “Yes. But you need to know your limits.” You handed Steve multiple files for him to examine.
“Ramirez is one of the rare ones that loves his family, especially his wife and daughters. You can’t be an ass in front of him.”
Steve grinned as he read, surprised with the restraint Ramirez and his men were able to achieve. “Guess that’s a little relief for me.”
“And White is too much into his own product all day to give a shit.”
Steve paused before he spoke, licking his lips in hesitation. “What happens if your father goes overboard?”
“Shit,” you mumbled, tumbling into the compound and practically crawling to the first floor. You didn’t know who was home or who was visiting. Wanda, Steve, Natasha, Vision, and Sam were on the run for more than a year now - Scott and Clint were on house arrest (which you were also, technically) - so you truly did not know if your cries for help would be heard. You had practically begged to accompany Wanda or be with Bucky back in Wakanda, but because of your undercover status (and the fact that your father still did not know you aided Captain America in hiding an assumed fugitive), you weren’t allowed to leave the compound without permission. The memory of the separation was almost as painful as the gunshot wound in your abdomen.
You clutched the side of your stomach and crawled through the doors.
“Arrrgh - is someone home?”
And with a stroke of luck, Rhodey rounded the corner just in time to hear your plea.
“Oh my god,” he mumbled, dashing across the room to help you sit up. “What happened?”
“They were getting too suspicious,” you said, wincing when Rhodey pressed a nearby blanket on your wound. “I couldn’t give them Steve’s location.”
“Are you talking about your father and his partner?”
You nodded quickly, helping Rhodey apply pressure.
“F.R.I.D.A.Y, alert the medics. First floor,” Rhodey stammered, the sight of your blood making him a little queasy in the morning.
“I’m gonna kill him if he got one of my kidneys - I was saving that, you know?”
Rhodey involuntarily laughed, quickly covering his mouth. You brushed it off and let him know that if you were still able to joke, he was able to laugh.
“Take your mind off the pain, what happened?”
You sighed, shutting your eyes in distress. “You know that the main players in this game are me and Steve. My father decided that it was time to meet the star-spangled man, time to meet who is distributing his product behind the back of the U.S government.”
Rhodey rotated the blanket to dab with a clean side. You continued speaking.
“I told him Steve wasn’t active at the moment - not a lie, by the way. But the more I told him that I had no way of being in touch with the dude, the angrier he got. Seda fired a warning shot into my gut, I guess.”
“Shit… I can’t authorize any more solo trips without back-up, Y/N. This has gone too far,” Rhodey sighed, adrenaline lowering once he saw a few medics burst through the door.
Hours seemed to pass before you awoke. The doctors found no serious damage, your stitches were already healing with the help of Tony’s new tech, and you were up and walking within hours. A slight pinch in your gut bothered you, but other than that you pulled yourself out of bed to go search for Rhodey. You heard voices talking over one another, all angry and authoritative. You tip-toed into the room just in time to see Rhodey end a call and turn back to the group of people he was talking to in person. Your breath hitched when you saw him, face still rugged and more tired than you remembered, but still gorgeous.
“Steve?” you quietly muttered, all eyes darting toward you. “Wanda?”
You tried to run over to them but were caught limping. Still, Wanda rushed over and enveloped you in a tight hug, noticing the way you twisted your hip outward to avoid full contact.
“Y/N, you shouldn’t be out of bed,” Rhodey said as he came over to hold you steady.
“What happened to you?” Steve asked, his hand now resting on your blushing cheek. You studied his blue eyes carefully, scared that this reunion was going to last for only a few more seconds, his warm hand making your stomach knot. He had a full beard now, hair longer than you remember, and he filled in his suit more. You were so unbelievably happy to see him after everything that went down.
You patted his chest with a soft chuckle, “Finally ripped that star off, huh?”
Steve’s smile didn’t quite reach his eyes, but you could see a glint of tenderness.
He placed his hand over yours, “Who’s ass do I have to kick?”
You waved your hand in the air. “Family drama.”
Rhodey didn’t let that explanation fly, though. He informed the rest of the team of what happened to you, Steve’s anger building.
But you quickly silenced them, “I’m alright. I’ll deal with it later. What threat do we currently face?”
After their brief update, you were ready to go back to bed.
“So, you’re telling me that we gotta fight this big purple dude because he wants Vision’s stone? Sure, why not?”
“I really hope he doesn’t go overboard.”
Steve repeated the question, however. “What do we do?”
You sighed, picking at the potato chips to your side. “If you’re feeling uncomfortable, or I am, we’ll just squeeze each other’s hands.”
“Like a safe word?”
Your smile grew slowly as you registered his innocent words. “Yes, Steve, like a safe word.”
You popped a chip into your mouth and leaned back into your chair,  “Wow, you’re on a roll with that adorableness.”
Steve rolled his eyes and stole a chip from your bag, “Shut up.”
You pointed at him and smiled wider, “See? Toxic bitch.”
It took a moment for Steve to register his previous words, “Okay, okay. I get it. I’m sorry.”
“Forgiven.”
You dusted off your fingers and handed him even more files, “Alright, so we know that to make it in this drug game, you gotta have connections everywhere.”
“Understandable. What are we looking for tomorrow?”
“Drug lords love to conduct business in the middle of huge events. Big distractions mean more leeway.”
“But tomorrow?”
“We’re going to cut them off. Swipe their ID’s.”
You elaborated, “To survive in this business, you have to have ID’s to get anywhere and everywhere. We’re looking for fake press ID’s, fake police ID’s, even fucking farming and landowning ID’s or… licenses, really. Those two give us the proof of ownership for certain lands.”
“Just swipe them?” he asked, eyebrows raised.
“My father keeps them all in a little safe inside the wall. It’s located in the study. Just his and Seda’s.”
“And they won’t notice they’re missing?”
“Word is that they’re not planning a move until the day of the wedding. Meaning, they’ll be cut off when they open that safe. We have to keep the product from moving or else our agents won’t find the tangible evidence when we give them the green light.”
Steve wrote in his notepad. “So, we’ll focus on the hacking-?”
“During the rehearsal dinner.”
“Gotcha.”
You grabbed the bag of chips and ate a few, the silence still comfortable. You spoke, stealing Steve's attention from the files. “This is gonna work, Steve.”
Steve thinly smiled and reached over to steal the bag from your hands. “As long as we don’t get caught.”
The steam from the bathroom practically whipped Steve across the face, the smell of lotions and perfume overpowering the natural odor of the hotel air conditioner. He groaned as he searched his suitcase for his pajamas.
“You couldn’t have left me some hot water?”
You scoffed, towel rinsing your wet hair. “It’s a hotel charging two hundred a night. If you don’t have hot water, then we’ll go down there and ‘Karen’ it up.”
“Funny,” Steve mumbled, pushing past you and locking the bathroom door. You stood, arms slightly raised in confusion, expression mimicking those in comedy shows. If there was any hidden camera, your eyes scanned for it.
“Uh, what’d I do?” you mumbled to no one in particular. But you brushed off Steve’s sudden change in attitude and sat for the next thirty minutes hand drying your hair in sections and watching television. You were invested in an episode of Kitchen Nightmares that you barely heard your phone ding. You unlocked your phone, laughing under your breath at the group chat messages.
Bucky: Kill him yet?
Peter: bet she will by wednesday.
Wanda: Ridiculous, all of you
Y/N: Twenty bucks says he kills me.
Bucky: hey are you even allowed to bet on this?
Wanda: Seems fair since you’re so sure she’ll crack
Peter: She’s more sneaky
Y/N: He mad right now
Bucky: He’s always grumpy before his bedtime
Y/N: dude it’s eight
Peter: lmfao
The same fog of heat exited the bathroom as Steve opened the door and you murmured a quick ‘I told you so’ for him to hear. He ignored you, rubbing his eyes as he plugged his phone to his charger and crawled under his blankets. He sat up, though and reached over to grab his sketchbook, knees coming up to substitute as a flat surface. You snuggled into your blankets after turning the television volume lower and placing the remote closer to Steve’s bedside table. You brought the blanket up to your chin and hummed peacefully.
The sounds of Steve’s pencil prompted you to open one eye. His tongue was between his incisors and his eyes were squinted slightly, hair only a little wet from his shower and the tip of his nose pink.
“Drawing always seems to ease your mind, huh?”
Steve didn’t look up from his drawing, “It’s relaxing. I have control over it, so…”
You thought his explanation was weird, but you understood what he meant. “I wish I could draw. It seems fun.”
Steve paused his movements and glanced over at you, “Do you want to learn?”
You stretched your legs and moaned loudly, “What? You want to teach me how to draw an eye tonight? I’m warning you.”
Steve shook his head, “Right, I don’t think I have that much patience.”
You snorted, cracking your knuckles absentmindedly as you searched for a more comfortable spot. “Mm, maybe some other time?”
“I know you sing, though.”
You flopped back over to face Steve, elbow now propped up to hold your weight. “How in the world do you know that?”
“You sing sometimes, in your room. It was quiet, but you would sing along to some song on your earphones.”
You scrunched your nose and chuckled, “And you were just outside listening?”
Steve paused his movements again, “What? It was pretty.”
You sank back down into your pillows and drew the blankets higher. “I feel like you saw me naked.”
Steve scoffed, “Totally not the same thing.”
You teased Steve further, “I’m exposed.”
A throw pillow hit your side out of nowhere. “Stop it, I was being serious!”
You grabbed the pillow and threw it back at him, “I haven’t sang in a long time. I hum mostly.”
Steve caught the pillow, and resumed his sketching. “Well, you should definitely sing more.”
“Thank you, my number one fan. I’ll take that into consideration.” You sighed and closed your eyes again.
“Why did you stop?”
You winced but quickly covered it by taking in a deep breath, eyes still closed.
“You’re still fuming about it. You’re still fuming about your image being ruined. Good ol’ Captain America as a secret, undercover drug dealer!”
Steve finally showed proof of cracking, hands gripping his hair harshly. “Y/N, I said don’t start! I’m finished!”
But you persisted, now screaming and countless, frustrated tears tainting your red cheeks. “You can’t fucking stand me because I tarnished that fucking star on your chest! I made you look bad to a bunch of fucking criminals!”
“Guess I just didn’t feel like it anymore.”
Steve didn’t want to ignore that, he wanted to dig deeper, but even with much persistence pinching the tip of his tongue, he remained silent and accepted your answer. He glanced your way a few times throughout the next couple minutes, finding your chest fall into a steady rhythm as you drifted off. He turned a page in his sketchbook, quickly brushing the surface clean of any dust before starting the outline of your sleeping form.

❖︎・・・・・❖︎・・・・・❖︎・・・・・❖︎
You were regretting having let Jon convince you to attend a high school reunion. There wasn’t a single person you wanted to see that you hadn’t met up with prior to the event.
Jon said it would be a good opportunity to relive fun experiences. He promised he’d be with you the entire time. And he kept his promise — until Damian arrived.
Your anxiety spiked up, Jon could hear it clearly. He could also hear Damian’s heartbeat when he saw you. Swallowing harshly upon realizing the youngest member of the Wayne family had brought a date, you excused yourself.
Both Jon and Damian followed you with their eyes. Jon shook his head, aware of what was going on. He of course couldn’t burst into the bathroom and console you, Jon had done it a few times throughout high school when Damian wasn’t around for whatever reason and your nerves got the best of you but this time it would look like something else since you guys had arrived together.
Ever the shy sweet girl, you had often told him he shouldn’t worry. But Jon cared, and he could see how the predicament of physically following you was tearing Damian apart too.
Jon greeted Damian and his date curtly, only with a nod. Glaring at his best friend, he motioned for him to follow him to a more private area.
Faking a smile, Damian asked his date to wait for him.
“What do you think you are doing?!”
“Attending the reunion you told me I couldn’t skip. I assumed you would be happy.”
“You’re so full of crap.” Jon shook his head, crossing his arms against his chest. He had always been able to read Damian like a book, the same way Clark did with Bruce — his powers helped, but he didn’t need them, not when Damian was more expressive than he presumed.
Damian gave it all away by staring at the hallway, fixing his eyes on the door he had hidden behind with you multiple times.
“Aaaaand you’re a moron,” Jon added.
He would never say it out loud, but Damian knew Jon was right. Walking past his best friend, whom he genuinely adored and appreciated, Damian went back to his date. She was chatting up with people like she had known them for years.
They quieted down when he arrived, solemnly nodding their heads in attempts of greeting him respectfully. He searched the room for your best friend, forgetting that she had moved out for college and never returned to Gotham.
He acknowledged his date by name, “Would you do me a favor?”
Nodding, she listened carefully as he guided her away from the curious people.
You wondered if there was something wrong with you. Not with the way you looked or anything like that, just… just with you. Shyness had never gone away like your parents hoped when you were a child, and it had never bothered you until now.
Your chest tightened more and more at a fast pace. It felt different from anything you had experienced before. Huffing out, you leaned on your forearms against the skin and looked at your reflection in the mirror.
A blurry face was the only thing you found. Blinking rapidly, your reflection only turned blurrier. The bathroom felt hot, you would have broken into a sweat if you hadn’t been wearing a dress.
The bathroom door creaked open, startling you. You had expected to see a former classmate, giving you a tight smile and a pitiful look. You would’ve preferred that.
Damian’s date closed the door behind her. “Are you alright?” her voice was gruff, but you could tell the question had been genuine.
You nodded, avoiding her eyes. “The second stall is the best,” you murmured.
She ignored your comment and went straight to the point. “Could you please come out?”
How dare Jon send her to convince you? Hadn’t he realized the reason you couldn’t stay there was because you were miserably jealous?
The door opened again, that time you saw the ex-cheerleader captain enter. As you had predicted, she smiled at you and gave you a pitiful look — her eyes focused on the woman accompanying you for a fleeting moment, in how different the two of you were.
Feeling your throat lock up, you nodded again at Damian’s date. She opened the door for you, letting you out first.
Damian was outside the bathroom, with his hands behind his back and his attention solely on the door. His date walked past him without sparing him a glance, but you couldn’t.
You had never been able to ignore him and his magnetic aura, the hope of that changing vanished the second you saw him enter the gymnasium.
Unconsciously, you looked for Jon. It was unusual for him not to be around Damian. Feeling the familiar weight of Damian’s gaze on your face, you stood beside him.
“She’s pretty,” you told him honestly in a rasp, avoiding his eyes.
She was, everyone thought so. He felt shitty for bringing her there, not because he had lied to her or anything but because he had been right and you would react harshly. It was all he wanted, a reaction from you, a sign no matter how small that you were still interested.
“Jon’s not ugly,” he countered, fully aware that you weren’t dating his best friend.
Shrugging, you put more distance between the two of you. “Have a nice evening,” you wished him before walking away.
You couldn’t do it. Being around him hurt more than it should have. Relationships ended all the time, yours had expired because that was how life worked. There hadn’t been bad blood between you, but now you wished it had.
When you entered the bathroom to stay away from the gorgeous couple you partially had done so to make up an excuse to leave. Jon wouldn’t believe it, but he could never stay mad at you so it didn’t matter.
Still having feelings for a high school sweetheart was something out of romantic comedies. Everything about your relationship with Damian had been, to be completely honest. Childhood friends, the popular guy and the shy chubby girl, a sad break up that she didn’t get over of when he had moved on.
You had dated people after him, but every relationship had fizzled out for a reason. And the reason was green eyes and cocky smiles. You had lied to yourself and blamed it on your social skills, you weren’t outgoing enough and it was a turn-off for some — but the truth, the truth was worse, it had never been a turn-off nor a problem for anyone because you knew how to choose your partners. They simply weren’t Damian Wayne.
Waving goodbye at Jon from afar, you failed to notice you were being followed until you reached the parking lot.
“(Y/N), come on.”
You had missed the tone he used when saying your name. It hadn’t changed since you last heard it.
“I have things to—“
“You can't lie to me,” Damian cut you off.
“Uhmmm, could you just… leave me alone?”
He knew you didn’t mean it. “No.” Damian grabbed you from the wrist upon seeing the hesitance on your face. “Can we talk?”
“Not a good idea.”
He hated your short answers and the fact that you didn’t seem to trust him anymore. Fuck, he should’ve listened to Jon. To Jon from all people in his life!
“Please? There’s a new coffee shop nearby, it won’t take long.”
“I don’t want your girlfriend to think anything bad.”
Damian sighed deeply. He would sound pathetic. Fuck it. “She’s not my girlfriend.”
Oh. So he had fully moved on, then.
He saw heartbreak in your shifty eyes and couldn’t stop regret from overwhelming him. You weren’t able to speak, too surprised by the revelation to try and hide it anymore. She was everything you envisioned him with, pretty and mysterious with smooth skin and cold eyes.
God, maybe you had never been enough for his standards and now it was catching up on you. Or maybe his taste had changed. Either way, you couldn’t do anything about it.
Snatching your hand off his grip, you continued your path toward the street. Your legs felt heavy as you crossed the parking lot, like they used to after having to do a presentation in front of the entire class when you were a teenager.
The difference was that Damian had been there to steady you. He’d always tell you how well everything had gone and how proud he was — no one believed he could be that tender or attentive but you had seen it with your own eyes and felt it at every level of the word.
He hadn’t tried to run after you this time. A part of you had wished for it to happen, it would have been nice to not feel like you were drowning in your one-sided very much alive romantic feelings. Who even loves someone for that long?! You had never thought it would be possible, how could it when Damian and you had fallen out of love? Turns out only he had.
You reached your apartment complex in one piece, walking slower than you had intended and forcing yourself not to cry. The empty elevator, usually comforting, felt way too big.
As the doors slid open, you stepped outside with the intention of calling your best friend. Telling her she had been right would be everything but fun, and telling her it would have been easier if she was there would hurt.
Turning the lights on, you kicked your shoes off and walked directly to the kitchen. You needed a glass of wine — or the entire bottle, yes, that.
“Did you really forget to doublecheck for intruders like I taught you?”
You jumped, dropping the glass in your grasp. Damian was behind you in a second, apologizing for startling you.
“What are you doing here?”
Glass shards crushed under his shoes as he shifted. “I need to talk to you.”
You stood on your toes, trying not to hurt yourself as you stared down at the shattered cup to assess how to get away from the shards without touching Damian.
“Could you uh… move?”
“Will you leave me here standing like an idiot?”
It took you a moment to shake your head.
As you cleaned, he snooped around. He had never been inside your apartment. Damian had been about to drop by once, but he decided it would be for the best if he stayed away. He had only lied to himself with good intentions that hurt him more in the long term.
He still kept tabs on you. His siblings laughed, saying he was whipped after all those years. Only his father understood the way he felt, perhaps because Bruce himself had gone through that with Selina or because he was glad his son was finally comfortable with being human and the vulnerability it came with. The truth was more simple: he cared about you and there was nothing he could do to stop that.
Every time he had heard you were dating someone else it broke his heart. He had dated around too, but much less than you had — he didn’t have time for non-committing relationships, and he didn’t want a committed relationship with anyone but you.
“Did you hurt yourself?” he asked when you joined him in the living room.
“No,” you mumbled.
That should have been the moment where you offered him something to drink, but you were hoping the visit wouldn’t extend for more than five minutes.
Damian wasn’t sure how to touch upon the subject. Small talk wasn’t his thing and you had always felt uncomfortable with it so that wasn’t an option. Why couldn’t he just say it bluntly? That was his specialty, you had always giggled at how unsubtle he was.
“I still love you.”
“Is that why you’re getting married?”
“What?” Fuck, he had been such an idiot for not explaining himself with the proper words. “I am not.”
“Oh.” You made a pause, staring down at your lap where you let your hands drop. “Well, you took her as your date to something important and you said she wasn’t your girlfriend so…”
He didn’t consider a high school reunion as important, but he easily kept that to himself. “I thought you would take someone else when Jon told me you would be there,” he explained, “I didn’t want to look like an idiot in front of everybody, that’s it.”
Well, he made you look like one instead.
Damian rounded the coffee table in the middle of the living room to sit down next to you.
“Look at me?” You denied him. “(Y/N).” Still no reaction. “Beloved, please?”
Your breath hitched. His heart almost melted right there. Carefully, Damian placed his knuckles under your chin and pushed it upward. He then softly cupped your cheek, feeling the acceleration of your heart rate as your jugular jumped under the tip of his middle finger.
You finally stared into his eyes. Hundreds of times you had gotten lost in them — before your first kiss, throughout the first time he made love to you, the first time you were introduced as his girlfriend… his eyes had always grounded you while letting you drown in them.
“Tell me you still love me,” he pleaded.
“I don’t think I have to say it,” you admitted. It was painfully obvious he still knew you perfectly.
“I need to hear it.”
Not strong enough to deny him, you whispered, “I still love you.”
His mouth was on yours immediately. He kissed you fervently as his free hand rested on your thigh while one of your own flew to the back of his neck. Damian was elated with the effusiveness you were kissing him back, holding his head in place and taking control of the kiss completely.
It had been so long since he had you for the last time that he had forgotten what arousal really felt like. His senses were too alive as your tongue explored his mouth, dizzying him with every sigh that escaped you.
Your fingers trailed down his torso, slowly yet firm. He caressed your thigh, so soft and tempting. He couldn’t wait to sink his teeth on them again. In consequence, the bruising kiss came to an end — you bit down his bottom lip, pulling on it as you stared into his eyes.
Damian grunted, withdrawing his hand from your face to grip your waist. Your hands slid down in reaction, the one on his nape to his back and the one on his stomach to his crotch. His bulge twitched under the weight of your warm palm.
He sighed your name, aching for your touch. It was borderline pathetic how easily you got him going. You leaned in to kiss his jaw, not taking your hand off his crotch but not applying more pressure either — Damian moved his head so he could kiss you on the mouth, impatient to get more of you.
“You don’t know how much I want you,” he interrupted the kiss to say, wet mouth on top of yours as he spoke.
You giggled, cupping his bulge. “I think I do.”
His grunt sent chills down your spine. Damian’s grip on your waist tightened as he pushed you to lay down on the couch. His lips were immediately on yours again, sloppily kissing you while his palms dragged up your thighs. Reaching the rim of your skirt, he stopped to ask for permission to lift it.
You granted it to him, nodding as your nose brushed his. He slipped his hands under the material first, taking his time to trace your thighs.
“I missed you so much,” he said against your jaw before dragging his lips down your neck.
You angled your neck, giving him as much access as he needed. Feeling his smile on your skin, you started to unbutton his shirt, struggling to get past the middle. Damian’s fingers brushed your clothed core, making you whine loudly.
Bunching your skirt up, he pressed his knuckles against your core, using his other hand to hold the skirt so it wouldn’t fall. You pushed him off you, sitting up and eventually standing off the couch.
Assessing you would take the dress off, Damian finished the job you had started with his shirt, with urgency, throwing it to the side. He was about to start undoing his pants when he caught the sight in front of him.
There had always been something stupidly hot about seeing you in mismatched underwear. You looked down at your body, just to check what it was he was staring at. You hadn’t really paid attention to what you were wearing when you left the apartment, too unmotivated to attend the reunion to really care. It had ended up playing in your favor. Good one, (Y/N).
The sound of his pants being unzipped ignited something in the pit of your stomach. Out of reflex, you rubbed your legs against each other.
You assumed he would stand up when he kicked his shoes off and discarded his pants, but Damian instead got into his knees, placing his hands on your back. Trailing open-mouthed kisses over your thigh, from the outside to the inside, he pulled your panties down, giving you mere seconds to kick them to the side. He used to finger you first, but this time around he skipped it — probably because you were too aroused already. Pulling you toward his face as he grabbed you by the ass, his mouth latched onto your clit.
Gasping in pleasure at the sensation of his tongue licking a stripe from your clit to your entrance, you gripped his hair. Damian buried his face between your thighs, letting you pull him as closely as you needed. His nose bumped against your clit, tongue dipping into your entrance.
You moaned his name, tugging on his hair. He swiped his tongue upward, shifting his face to now suck on your clit. Your hand slid down to the base of his neck to which you held onto, closing your eyes tightly when his finger brushed your entrance from behind.
“Okay,” you breathlessly said, pulling his face from between your thighs. “I need you.”
Teasing you was far from his head. Damian jumped to his feet, meeting your mouth in a needy kiss as he guided you back to the couch. You tasted yourself in his hot tongue, parting from him only to find you weren’t satisfied and kissing him again.
Damian almost ripped his underwear off, too eager to really care. Kneeling between your thighs, he stared down at you as he asked, “Condom?”
“Pill,” you assured him, a little abashed. “Unless you’re not—“
“I’m clean.”
“Cool.”
He snorted, brushing his tip up and down your slit as he held his shaft on his hand. “Ready?”
You nodded, bucking your hips up and pursing your lips in excitement. Damian entered you slowly, leaning over at the same pace. With his face in your cleavage, he waited for you to get used to him again.
“Fuck,” he cursed through a groan. You were warm around him, walls clenching up in reflex as your chest heaved over his face.
Placing your hands on his biceps, you whispered for him to move. He complied, huffing in pleasure on your skin. Sucking on the uncovered parts of your chest, Damian let his hands trace your sides for a moment.
It wasn’t enough for either of you. He shifted, leaving a kiss on your lips as he pulled away from your torso. Still connected with you, Damian gripped your hips and started a quicker pace.
Grabbing your thighs, he pulled you closer to have you rest your calves on his shoulders. The new angle made you squeal. He would draw blood from his bottom lip if he continued biting, but he couldn’t stop himself. His initial plan had been to take his time but it was getting harder to follow said plan.
Gripping the edge of the back of the couch, you gazed up at him. “It’s okay,” you breathed out, “go faster.”
You didn’t have to tell him twice, Damian pulled his hips back only to slam into you. You had really missed the burn only he could give you, rocking into you faster the more you tightened around him.
He ghosted your clit with his thumb, circling it lightly as he found a rhythm with his hips. Cursing as you arched your back, you bucked against his thumb and cock.
His moans were like music to your ears, eyes clenched shut and Adam’s Apple bobbing as his thrusts grew sloppy. Your head fell back with a particularly deep thrust, the strangled moan coming out of your mouth only prompting him to move his thumb faster.
He had you leaving out a string of whimpers rather quickly. Your reaction went straight to his cock, ragging his breathing as your walls clenched at every stroke of his cock against them.
Opening his eyes as he felt sweat drip down the side of his face, Damian hovered over your equally sweaty body, kissing you through your orgasm. Your hands flew to his shoulders where you sunk your nails in attempts of keeping him close, repeating his name between short kisses as he relentlessly fucked you.
“Come for me, pretty girl,” he moaned as your walls squeezed his cock.
Your mouth hung open after a long whimper, you just couldn’t take it anymore. He watched as your pretty face contorted in pleasure under him, hands sliding down his biceps as you came undone around his throbbing cock.
He called your name through a cry, resting his forehead on yours. “You wanna cum?” you whispered a question, feeling him twitch inside you.
“Shit,” he groaned, nose bumping yours, “yes.”
Cupping his face, you hummed. Damian’s muscles tightened under your touch and over your soft body as he finished inside you, warm cum coating your walls.
He stayed there for a few moments, catching his breath. Eventually, he slipped out of you slowly. You whimpered, feeling cum drip down your folds. Damian smirked in satisfaction upon noticing the semen flowing down your thigh.
“White door to your right,” you instructed him. “There are clean towels under the sink.”
Handing you a damp towel, he waited for you to take it to then withdraw his cellphone.
“Gotta go?”
He shook his head. “Letting Dick know I’m fine.”
You reached for your panties, standing up in order to slip them on. Damian pouted, dropping the mobile device onto the couch as his hands were placed on your waist.
“I love you,” he said.
You said it back, having missed telling him just because you could. “I love you more.”
He could have fought you on it, but he preferred kissing you softly, breaking into a smile in the middle of the kiss when you wrapped your arms around him. You dropped your head onto his chest as the kiss ended, leaving a peck on his sternum.
Sliding his hands toward your lower back, tracing it up, he stopped at the clasp of your bra. Damian whined, “We didn’t even take this off!”
Giggling on his skin, you slightly parted from him to gaze up. He lifted both eyebrows suggestively, making you roll your eyes. Placing your hands on the sides of his torso to put more distance between his body and yours, you told him, “I need a nap first.”
He took a hand off your back to motion for you to lead the way to your bedroom, never not in the mood for cuddling you.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She lives in a constant state of perpetual indifference as she has lived in Burbank her whole life and there for has grownup surrounded by toons. She's always had a soft spot for Toons as they embody the pure comedy and innocence of the world, living only to make people laugh. This unfortunately leads a lot of them to get taken advantage of and mistreated; and this in turn lead her to pursue a career in the entertainment industry, specifically business and law in which favors Toons.
She ends up in Law school but unfortunately her family isn't made of money so she takes up a few part time jobs, mainly babysitting. Despite her bleak out look on life and dry sarcasm Tianna is actually very good with kids. Which leads to her getting a call from the CEO of Warner Bro Studios himself.
There must have been at least a hundred nannies and babysitters lined up for the interview; each anxiously awaiting their turn as they all listened to the absolute chaos happening behind the door of Psychiatrists Dr. Scratchansniff.
Tianna didn't have to wait too long though as half the candidates noped out before they were even called and the other half ran away screaming 5 minutes after entering. Tianna had absolutely no idea what she was getting into.
She was finally called in by an attractive yet tired looking nurse alongside two older gentleman who Tianna guessed as the CEO and Scratchansniff.
They briefed her on the situation at hand before introducing her to the "patients". Tianna has heard of the Warner siblings before, used to watch a lot of their older cartoons when she was a kid; their random sarcastic comedy always amused her. Apparently they've been getting a lot more out of hand as of late and the studio lot can't take anymore property damage.
Long story short they needed someone to wrangle them into submission, at least for a little bit, until the accounting team can set up a better budget for all the property damage.
Tianna knew that this was impossible and she told them as much; not only were they toons but they were also children, a combination that is a recipe for success entertainment wise but also came with dire consequences business wise.
They begged her to try anyway, promising to pay her double, triple if they had to.
Usually Tianna thrived on seeing corporate fat cats and CEO's suffer for their foolish actions but this.....it was starting to get sad. They all looked very tired and their sanity seemed to be hanging by a thread, especially Scratchansniff.
Tianna reluctantly agreed to give it a shot but only if she receives compensation for any damage (mental or physical) she may suffer while attempting this.
They quickly lead her into another room beyond the office, there she finds the Warner siblings waiting for her on the couch. Well, not so much waiting but more constructing some sort of elaborate Irish river dance while simultaneously playing hopscotch on the couch.
The door was then slammed behind her, and the sound of about a dozen locks clicking all at once let her know that she wasn't going anywhere for a while. That's when the Warners finally noticed her.
She waved awkwardly and they merely stared at her like some sort of demented cat caught eating something it wasn't supposed to.
Before she could even speak a proper hello the two brothers ran at full speed into her arms, kissed her cheeks, and simultaneously said "Helloooo nurse!"
Once able to regain her balance Tianna gave them both an annoyed glare before leading them back to the couch. She sat them back with their sister, who had been quietly observing the situation (probably looking of a funny opening to join in), stepped back with arms crossed and a stern look.
Tianna: That is not a nice thing to do, especially to a woman, let alone a stranger you've just met.
That apparently took them all aback for a moment as if the thought had never occurred to them. It was further confirmed when Wakko raised his hand and ask "why?"
So apparently nobody has taught these kids about personal space, boundaries, and/or asking for consent before and that was all very concerning to Tianna.
A little bit of Toon history: Toons in reality are very innocent beings even if they know a lot of raunchy humor and bad habits, but that is mostly kept on set or amongst themselves. Toons never mean any harm (real life threatening harm that is) even if they're drawn as "good" or "bad", their sole purpose in life is to entertain. Their ethics and morals are very different from that of regular humans and it had been a very long prosses to be able to integrate them with regular people. The problem isn't knowing right from wrong, the problem is teaching them what is taboo amongst humans that isn't taboo amongst Toons. This isn't necessarily their fault as they had been originally drawn with that intention by humans; so really it's humanities fault for playing God and not thinking about the consequences.
Anyways, the Warner siblings were from 1929, when cartoons were just coming out and barely considered living beings with no rights what-so-ever. Atop of that they were children with no parental figure or written background, they've been stuck in a water tower most of their lives, and the only interaction with the outside world they've ever had is through the entertainment industry. So yeah, even by Toon standards this was kind of messed up, these kids could get into some serious legal trouble and not even know it.
So Tianna sat down and talked with them, which is another thing the siblings seemed surprised about because apparently nobody ever just wanted to talk to them, let alone calmly explain to them why what they did was wrong and how they could learn form it. It was a very new experience for them and with each passing minute Tianna grew even more concerned.
The Warners seemed to enjoy talking to her; Dot always liked having another girl around to even things out in the group and excitedly asked if she could style Tianna's hair (she accepted of course). Yakko liked the challenge of trying to make her laugh, since Tianna was such a stoic person even the smallest of chuckles was a victory for him. Plus he enjoyed being able to talk as much as he wanted without somebody telling him to shut up. Wakko was just happy that somebody was willingly interacting with them for more than five minutes. He talked about his favorite snacks and asked if he could call her Tia for short (again she agreed).
She emerges from the room two hours later, hair a mess with uneven braids and pigtails, shirt stained with mustered and jelly, pants and shoes just a touch singed black, yet still happily waving goodbye to the Warners before heading back to the wait room.
It is there that the Nurse, Scratchansniff, and the CEO were anxiously waiting for her. There were surprised to not only see her in one piece but also to see that she wasn't running for the hills despite her disastrously look at the moment. They had no chance to ask her how it all went or if she'd accept the job because as soon as she saw them she started angrily screaming at them, tearing them all a collective new one.
Tianna: Do you have any idea how many ethical Toon entertainment laws you've broken? Not to mention all the child endangerment, mistreatment, and labor laws that have been violated. No wonder they won't cooperate with you, do you have any idea how much emotional and psychological trauma you've caused them? Of course they're Toons so they don't respond to it the same way humans do but there is still a lot of damage done! You've done nothing to teach them on how they should act outside the society of entertainment and instead reprimand them with no explanation what-so-ever. Did you honestly think isolating them inside a goddamn water tower would satiate their need for attention, cause that's all their asking for, just even a little bit of attention and kindness would of helped their psychological and emotional development!
She continued screaming at the three of them for a good half hour before her voice finally gave out, Tianna wasn't used to talking louder than a monotone speaking voice. That still didn't stop her from glaring at them, causing three grown adult that were older and supposedly wiser than her to cower behind a desk.
After a glass of water, a few aspirins, and a complimentary sandwich Tianna was calm enough to finally tell them how the session with the Warners went. She said that they were good kids and would be happy to babysit but also demanded living accommodations with all expenses paid for, five times the salary they promised her, and Sundays off, or so help her she will bring them a lawsuit so bad that it will burn the entire company to the ground. Of course this was all agreed to.
And thus began Tianna's adventures in babysitting the Warner siblings!
(Let me know if y'all want a part 2 with Tia and the Warners hijinks)

“Who are you?” The scene that defines Chadwick Boseman’s legacy
Tumblr media
Yesterday, the world lost a bright and promising, burgeoning talent in Chadwick Boseman.
I had wondered privately for a while if something was wrong with him, as others had as well online, as he appeared increasingly sicker with each interview he gave over the last two years. I thought maybe I had been looking too much into it, not wanting to jump to conclusions about who he was but now gravely we all know why.
The much too young star of films such as “42,” “Marshall,” and of course, “Black Panther” had been fighting a largely private battle with colon cancer for four years.
Tumblr media
It was devastating hearing this news yesterday, the man who undeniably left behind a legacy of playing prominent black heroes, both historical and fictional, passed away just as he was starting to truly hit it big. When you begin to realize the man was dealing with cancer as he performed physically demanding roles in the MCU you begin to see the character and determination of a man unwilling to quit in the face of true adversity.
But he clearly wasn’t just doing it for himself when he continued making and promoting NINE more movies despite his diagnosis, afterall no one would’ve blamed the guy for taking it easy these past four years. He’s had many scenes that define his legacy over his all too short career but I feel it can really be summed up in one particular moment from by far his most famous film; “Black Panther.”
Those who know me or have read my work know that I have a fairly cynical relationship with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While I would not say most of them are “bad” per se, I would say a ton of them are largely interchangeable action comedies with pretty straightforward messages about good vs evil for general audiences. They are largely popcorn escapism and though there is nothing technically wrong with that, I was starved for an MCU film that was sincere about its story finally and had something real to say.
Enter “Black Panther” in early 2018.
youtube
“Black Panther” was everything I had long been waiting for in the MCU; a film with a real sense of vision and theme, a killer soundtrack, great supporting characters, a complicated and nuanced villain, and a story that didn’t feel the need to add a joke after every single scene like more typical MCU movies. The tip of that spear of course was Chadwick, who had already proved to be a great Black Panther in one of the few other sincere Marvel flicks “Civil War.” His natural charisma, physicality, and dramatic presence in this role made him a huge standout in frankly the best ensemble cast of any superhero movie ever.
The scene that truly sums up not just the mark “Black Panther” left on Hollywood but Chadwick’s own legacy comes at the very end though (the first of three, of course. It’s an MCU movie, afterall).
T’Challa has defeated his usurper cousin Erik Killmonger, his rule restored in Wakanda but clearly a changed man from the story’s beginning as he reckons with the complicated legacy of his father. He travels to Oakland, the birthplace of Killmonger, with his sister Shuri who he explains the crime committed by their father in this place and how it set off the events of the story. He turns to Shuri, tells her that he has decided to help this afflicted community by creating a Wakandan outreach center for the youth to give them a new hope in life. As he says this he decloaks their ship nearby, surprising the youth already in the area who are immediately in awe of it. One of the kids turns to T’Challa, smiling, a sense of inspiration and intrigue brewing inside, and asks “Who are you?” to which the young King simply smiles, then the credits roll.
youtube
It’s a simple scene but it truly speaks to the impact left behind by Chadwick and the importance of representation.
“Black Panther” is hardly the first starring vehicle for a black man, it’s not even the first black super hero movie but what it made it different is it was the first blockbuster to truly lean unapologetically into its African identity to focus on the inspiration of a story centered around that culture. It showed Hollywood that an action blockbuster not just centered on a black star but centered on African culture had vast widespread appeal.
White kids will never have a shortage of white superheroes to grow up with on the big screen; a diverse palette of Supermans, Spider-mans, Captain Americas, and shit we’re even getting our sixth new Batman actor since 1989 soon. But Chadwick gave black kids their first real Superman of their own.
In the years since this came out, I have seen the influence, at times, firsthand among the youth. I work part-time as a kids martial arts instructor and each Halloween party we’ve held I’ve seen a few more T’Challas among the costumes represented. When I ask kids, black, white, or Asian, what their favorite superhero is, it always warms my heart to see a kid light up when they say “BLACK PANTHER!”
youtube
(Seriously, cute AF)
This goes beyond just my anecdotal observations of course; the film grossed a billion dollars, and there are countless videos online of kids yelling “Wakanda forever!” at the top of their lungs while rocking a Black Panther suit or reciting one of the movie’s memorable lines. It’s beautiful because it speaks to that last scene’s key message; inspiration.
Growing up myself, as a half Asian American, there weren’t a ton of role models who looked like me to take inspiration from. I didn’t really understand how much this could affect me until I finally did start seeing people like myself occupy positions of influence. I didn’t start caring for baseball until I saw a slugger named Hideki Matsui smash a couple dingers in a Yankees’ uniform in the early 2000s. I didn’t care much for martial arts, outside my very early youth, until I witnessed a half Japanese Brazilian named Lyoto Machida KO Thiago Silva at UFC 94 in 2009. I didn’t care much for soccer until a striker named Keisuke Honda played out of his mind in the early rounds of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Sometimes you gotta see something happen in order to believe and be inspired by it and it’s easier to visualize it when you see someone who looks like you do it. That’s what representation means and why it’s important.
It’s easy for white America to dismiss the need for representation in media when theirs is so saturated in the culture everyday. Cries of “wHaT aBoUt wHiTe HiStORy mOnTH?!” delivered unironically while their history is proudly given front seat consideration in all forms of media, film, and influence every day. This is why it drives me so crazy when a white person tells me “representation isn’t important” because apparently, they “don’t need it.”
Well motherfucker, of course you don’t need it. You fucking got yours already!
Tumblr media
(What every non-white person wants to say when confronted with this tired, out of touch argument...)
“Black Panther” delivered a superhero that not only black children could be proud of and love but someone they could draw inspiration from. Kids are going to want to become film directors cause of this movie, actors, stuntmen, martial artists, scientists, engineers, and so many other different things that the world of Wakanda proudly showcases and it’s all thanks to Chadwick’s leading man performance that made it possible.
Some jokes I’ve heard frequently on the internet is that Chadwick was on somewhat of a quest to play every major black role in story-telling history, what with performances as Jackie Robinson, Thurgood Marshall, James Brown, and of course Black Panther. But I think his 2018 speech at his Alma Mater of Howard really explains why he kept looking to play these major positive black roles.
youtube
(I encourage you to listen to the whole thing but the part that’s important here begins at 21:55)
Hollywood likes to pigeon hole certain demographics of people (aka non-white) to play stereotypical roles forever until they are proven to be lucrative in different ways (Qualified Immunity of film-making if you will…). Black people largely could mostly play thugs and drug dealers, Latinx can only be gang bosses and poor servants and gardeners, Asians are either kung fu masters or some other offensive perpetual foreigner. And in worst cases no role at all, instead whitewashed for general audiences (aka white folk).
Chadwick took a stand that the color of his skin did not define who Hollywood narrowly believed he could perform as and set out to play characters and people who could inspire a new generation of African Americans and show the rest of the country that they were more than a stereotype.
When that young kid in that final scene asks, “Who are you?” and T’Challa smiles its because he knows he’s already changing hearts and minds for the future, just as Chadwick did playing this truly inspirational role.
Tumblr media
“Black Panther” is not a perfect movie. I could discuss the ways it could’ve been better and even, less problematic in parts on a different day, but the legacy it leaves behind is one that’s undeniably positive and Chadwick was able to make that a reality. Perhaps he understood that if the world knew his diagnosis it would blunt the impact of “Black Panther’s” release, that if little kids and African Americans alike knew their superhero was already dying it would mar the film’s positivity and influence. I can’t speak for the dead obviously, and in no way am I saying one should just push through a cancer diagnosis and keep it secret, but I can see Chadwick understanding what it would mean for the audience if they just believed for as long as possible that they would have their king of Wakanda forever.
As Robert Downey Jr. said on social media last night “He leveled the playing field while fighting for his life.”
Though I will never know him personally, by most measures Chadwick seemed to be exactly the kind of hero he showed up to be on the big screen and his legacy will ultimately be that of one who looked to inspire others, particularly the next generation until his final breath. If that doesn’t make him a hero, I don’t know what does.
Rest in power, King. Wakanda Forever…

Part 2 -  The Moment Just Before The Actual Kiss, Which Is Sometimes Even Sweeter Than The Kiss Itself
Blinking at his admission, your eyes then grew unfocused. “You… you what?”
“I know it’s ridiculous. Believe me, I don’t understand it either,” he continued hastily, letting go of your arm and running a hand through his hair. “But ever since I first saw you, I’ve been distracted like this.”
A small smile ghosted over your lips. “I see.”
“I’m normally rather efficient, not at all a bumbling mess like this.”
“And I make that harder?”
“You’re enjoying this now,” he lamented and you giggled before biting at your bottom lip. Eunwoo couldn’t help but groan at your elated expression. “Meanwhile I think I’m going insane.”
“I think you’re just being really romantic.”
Eunwoo laughed, shaking his head. “Oh no, that’s not me.”
“It’s not?” you echoed, pursing your lips together.
Oh god, why had he noticed them right at that moment?
Blinking rapidly, he sat back in his chair quickly. You watched him before grinning. “What’s not romantic about a guy telling you the reason he can’t think straight is because of you? Most girls dream of being told this, you know.”
“Really? But it’s so…”
“Romantic,” you repeated, your smile splitting your lips further. “Thank you for telling me the truth, Eunwoo.”
He sighed, glancing at you cautiously. “What do we do now about it?”
“Well, if sitting next to me is a bother, we could try moving apart so long as you don’t use this confession as something to avoid me entirely with.” Eunwoo didn’t mention out loud that it had been a thought he possessed, but you seemed to notice and hissed at him. “You can’t!”
“I dislike being this hopeless,” he told you with a pout which only made you further unable to remove your amusement. “Stop having so much fun at my expense!”
“You haven’t asked me what my thoughts are around this situation, Eunwoo.”
“Do I have to? It’s a ridiculous problem to have and I’m already struggling to navigate it myself.”
“We could do it together,” you offered airily, not quite meeting his gaze. “You know, like a team.”
“A team?”
“Yeah, we could work on extending your comfort zone whilst in my company. I’m sure the more time we spend together, you’ll find your footing again. Attraction only bothers people with a crush temporarily.”
Eunwoo glanced around the café before shooting you an exasperated look. “A crush?! Y/N, come-”
“I could take away the crush aspect of your problem, if you want, Eunwoo. Who’s to say I don’t have one too?”
Eunwoo stared at you dumbfounded until he started to grow dizzy. Yearning for fresh air, he barely breathed out an excuse me before dashing for the exit, walking briskly down the sidewalk whilst breathing in deeply.
You caught up to him a moment later. “You’re so dramatic.”
“Not usually,” he replied with a side glance in your direction. He couldn’t help but scrunch up his face when he realised the itch in his palm to reach out for yours.
He pocketed his hands deeply into his jeans.
“So you like me. And perhaps I like you.”
Eunwoo stopped walking and stared at you imploringly. “Did you like me before or after I admitted to being bothered by you?”
“Does it matter?”
“You’re just stunned because a guy said some nice things.”
“No, it’s nothing like that,” you corrected and stepped closer. “I haven’t met someone who I can easily talk to right away like you. Normally I’m really reserved. Plus, I can’t deny that you’re rather handsome, either.”
Eunwoo couldn’t help but laugh then. “So normally we’re both different from how we’re representing to one another now.”
“It means something.”
“I don’t believe in love at first sight,” he warned and you shrugged.
“Did I say I was in love? I just suggested we explore this. I’ll help you get over this issue you’re dealing with and see if what I feel is something worth acting upon. What do you say?”
Eunwoo sighed and after a moment’s thought, he nodded. “That sounds like the best option we have.”
Tumblr media
Much to Eunwoo’s surprise, your idea worked well. It took enduring through another two weeks of less than stellar performances from him in class before he found the rhythm needed to be productive at your side. And because this was achieved by spending all his time in between classes with you, you were now efficient study buddies. You bounced ideas off one another, even with your other subjects that you didn’t take together. Eunwoo was also able to spend hours just reading across from you and whilst he still had moments where he stopped and stared or felt his heart racing, he was no longer incapable.
The physical reactions hadn’t stopped though. If anything, they had intensified. He would often find himself itching to reach out for you and sometimes he did that, relishing in the moment of connection. Holding your hand or letting you lean against him when you grew tired at the end of a cramming session made Eunwoo feel more in control of the reactions. He was empowered every time he gave into them.
And that made him realise that things had progressed in his mind further than just a crush.
“What are you doing over the weekend?” you asked during lunch and Eunwoo glanced up at you and shrugged.
“Probably nothing aside from a bit of study.”
“Nothing?” you asked and then shook your head. “That won’t do!”
“Being lazy and not attending school sounds like it’ll do just fine,” he admitted with a smirk and you rolled your eyes impatiently.
“But you could do more than that.”
“I could?” he wondered, looking at you curiously. “Like what?”
“We could go to the arcade or see a movie or-”
“Like a date?” he interrupted and you clamped your mouth shut, giving a small shy nod. He grinned. “Did you just try to ask me out on a date, Y/N?”
“Well you’re taking forever to do so and I just thought that it would be nice to spend time together outside of the university campus and explore more of what this feeling is between us.”
It was his turn to be delighted at your expense, chuckling when you started to grumble incoherently. Eunwoo leaned towards you with another smirk. “When will you pick me up?”
“You’ll go out with me?” you breathed and then a smile grew on your lips. “Really?”
“You’ll have to be prepared for me though. I’ve barely been holding back these last few days from you. If we’re going on a date, who knows what will happen.”
Actually, it wasn’t much different from daily life at your side. So far, you had enjoyed the arcade together and even saw a comedy that made his sides hurt from too much laughter. Now he was holding your hand and swinging it lightly as you ate ice-creams walking alongside the river. Conversation had flowed freely as had the smiles. Eunwoo was pretty sure the corners of his mouth were going to ache tomorrow after how much he’d curled his lips up in pleasure today with you.
Still, there was something that was different.
All day long, he had wanted to kiss you. At little moments, like when you grinned up at him after winning a game you’d tried several rounds on at the arcade. Or when you offered him a piece of popcorn and he had stared at you instead. You had even let him try your ice-cream flavour and for a second, Eunwoo had contemplated the age-old technique of kissing you to taste it instead.
Yet he held back each time, searching for a better moment.
“I guess I should take you home,” you mentioned once your ice-creams were finished, looking up at him with an unreadable expression. You then smiled when he laughed.
“I can’t believe you held to your end of the deal.”
“Well, I did ask you out on this date. Gender roles mean nothing in the modern age. A woman can pick a guy up and drop him off at his front door after an enjoyable time together.”
“You going to kiss me goodnight too then?” he wondered cheekily, only realising what he said a moment after.
Before he could apologise for the impromptu response, you were already slyly grinning up at him. “Maybe I should. Then one of us would have acted upon it.”
“You noticed?”
“How could I not?!” you exclaimed, shifting in closer. “You basically stared at my lips more than any other guy has before.”
Eunwoo rubbed his neck awkwardly. “Hah, I guess so.”
“It’s okay. I’ve been doing the same too. Wondering when I’d get to feel them against my own mouth.”
Eunwoo reached out to cup the side of your face, searching your eyes momentarily before leaning down towards you. He hesitated but not because he was nervous.
Watching as you fluttered your eyes shut when he was mere inches away from your face, Eunwoo’s heart started to thump noisily in his chest. He felt a surge of emotions wash over him as if he had already kissed you and had fallen trap to your enchanting ways. He witnessed the pursing of your lips, waiting for his own.
This moment.
This was more than he had ever experienced before in his life. He had dated girls when he was younger and even held a relationship for over a year during high school. But all of that paled to the way you willingly wanted him now.
It urged him to take your lips with his own, overwhelming all his senses. The kiss was soft, caressing right down to his soul. As he pulled you closer and deepened the embrace, Eunwoo knew he wouldn’t kiss anyone quite as well as he were you. Much as he tried to label the first moment, he searched through his mind for the reason why you made him feel like this now.
He couldn’t come up with any ideas that fitted perfectly, but your mouth sure felt as if it were made to be against his.
Finally, you stepped back, breath staggered and a hand upon your heaving chest. He watched you recover, his mind swirling with thoughts of you and his body was tingling from the experience.
“You’re beautiful,” he confessed and you eyed him again, a giddy smile crossing your swollen lips.
“And you’re mine now, right?”
Mine. Maybe that was the term Eunwoo was searching for. He nodded. “I’m yours.”

part one part two part three
͙⁺˚*・༓☾ ☽༓・*˚⁺‧
Day thirteen, and it was the last full day before everyone parts their ways and possibly not see each other for a few weeks because the social level has already passed its mark.
For the last day, Lina decided to stay inside and have a movie marathon. Everyone liked the idea of being able to relax before the long drive back into the city. It started at 8 a.m when Lina woke everyone up in a high pitch, enthusiastic voice, demanding everyone get up to spend the last day with each other and not in bed. Per usual, everyone groaned, exhausted from their slumber and probably exhausted from hanging out with each other so much.
Breakfast was made and a movie was already on as everyone was gathered in the living room, sitting on the couch and the soft cushioned seats next to it as you sat on the floor, needing a table for your plate of food. Everyone was still dressed in their sleepwear, and no one moved except for bathroom breaks or to get more food. The movies varied from crime and suspense, comedy, romantic comedies, and horror. Horror being your least favorite. You were thankful that the sun was still up when it was time to watch the scary movie, not knowing how to handle your fear if the sun was nowhere to be seen.
As you sat on the floor, rug beneath you providing cushion, you hugged your knees to yourself and food long forgotten about, and you were covering your eyes as the intense scenes were showing. The typical main character wandering the dark house with a bat in her hand, waiting for the killer to pop up out of nowhere. Your heart was racing as you peeked through the spaces of your finger, anticipating the jump scare. Everyone had their eyes covered except for Minny and Jackson, and you immediately thought they weren’t human for not being so scared.
And when the jump scare did happen, the killer covering the innocent victim’s mouth, along with the intense and scary music put over it, you screamed and immediately clung onto Harry’s leg that was right next to you. He was sitting on the seat behind you as you dug your face into his knee, finding a sort of comfort and protection in him. Everyone had calmed down, putting their blankets that were covering their faces down. But you were still shaken up.
Harry puts his hand on your head, soothing you from your scare. When you didn’t lift your head up, he leaned forward so his chest was pressed against his thighs and started whispering in your ear.
“Hey, it’s okay,” he rubs your back.”Scary part is over.” You feel his lips against your hairline, but he doesn’t give your head a kiss, he’s just resting his head there. “You can open your eyes now,” he continues soothing you with his sweet and raspy voice. “Come on, it’s just me. I’m here.” You lift your head up and open your eyes, meeting with his. “Hi,” he flashes his beautiful smile at you. “You okay?” You only nod and look around the room. No one seemed to pay any attention to you as their eyes were glued to the movie.
You lean back on the arm of the chair, staying close to Harry’s leg as he continues rubbing your head, and you feel the comfort and security that comes with it.
It was already night when they were in the middle of their fifth movie while eating dinner.
The sun had set, and the group took a break for a few minutes to go outside and watch the sun go down on their last day. It was so much more beautiful than the other nights. The sun set more orange than usual, illuminating the sky along with the clouds that were fading. Everyone was quiet for the most part, only speaking when complimenting how stunning the sky looked. You smiled so fondly, thinking about how the sunset today, in particular, was your favorite by far during the whole trip.
After it was completely dark, everyone headed outside and prepared for dinner. They decided to keep it easy; making homemade pizza with the dough Dan prepared the night before. They also had a pizza oven in the back which was convenient.
As everyone paid attention to the movie, eating their own creation for pizza, you had felt a vibration coming from the seat above you. You turn your head towards Harry as he looks down at his phone, brows furrowed and lips forming into a pout.
“Sorry, I have to take this.” Harry says to the group, but no one is really paying attention to him, and he heads to the other room next to the kitchen. You noticed his voice was unsure and you were worried about him, so you followed him to the other room and you could hear him talking. You stand on the other side of the door as it’s slightly open.
“Yeah? No, I’m on a trip… Why does it matter? Yes.” Harry scoffs. “I mean you already have a key, so yeah. Okay. Go ahead and wear my shirt, sure. Harry’s voice sounded very monotone and neutral, giving no emotion to the conversation. “I’ll be home tomorrow. Don’t eat all my food. Okay. Okay. Bye.”
A key? His shirt? What. The. Fuck. Is. Going. On.
Your frustration got the best of you and tears started glistening in your eyes, feeling so angry. Betrayed. Sad. You don’t move from your spot, feeling like your feet are stuck to the wooden floor. Harry swings the door open and is startled at your presence. He smiles, but it’s quickly replaced by a frown. A frown knowing he did something wrong, judging by the look on your face. The look that you’re giving him.
“Hey…”
“Don’t.” Your feet finally found its senses, like the neurons in your brain were finally strong enough to send the impulse, so you can storm out of his sight. Luckily, the area of the house you’re standing in is a bit of ways from the living room where everyone is at, so they most likely won’t hear you.
“Darling, wait up.” Harry chases after you. You turn around rapidly, making an abrupt stop, causing Harry to jump back a little.
“Don’t you dare fucking call me that. You lost the privilege of calling me that the second you walk out, and I was so stupid to give you another chance! And you took advantage of that, so don’t even start!” Tears have made their way down your face, and you quickly wipe them. You turn on your tracks and walk outside through the side door, not wanting the rest to see what’s happening.
“Just please let me explain.” He pleads and follows you.
“Why are you always explaining?! You’re always fucking trying to explain something like you’re always doing something wrong! Why?!” You sob.
“I fucked up the first time, I know. Believe me, I know-”
“And the second time? You did it again.” You interrupt.
“It’s not what you think.”
“It is what I think! You took advantage of my vulnerability! My kindness! I was crying and pouring my heart out to you, and you didn’t want me to know that you're still fucking with her because you knew I would get like this! But this is worse—what you did what way worse by telling me to forgive you during this trip.” It felt like you were hit by a truck with the realization that no one truly loves you or cares for you. That you’ll always be second best to everyone and that no one was willing to put you first.
“Please, just let me talk.” He says calmly, and you applaud him for keeping his cool as you were screaming in his face under the dark sky.
“Okay then. Go on. Tell me your bullshit excuse again!” You cross your arms, waiting for him.
“She’s staying at my place temporarily. She has a key because she used to stay there, but I promise you we are not together anymore.” He says softly. Just the thought of him with another woman made your insides fuel, you hated it.
“Why would you let her stay there? And the fucking shirt?”
“She’s only here for a little while until she goes back home. And the shirt was because she kept asking, and I wanted to end the call already, I promise.” Harry grabs your hands in his, and it’s the physical contact that makes you weak, but you rip yours away from his causing his head to drop in loss. “Please, forgive me.” He begs. You inhale and exhale deeply, and it’s like a sudden rush of memories hit you of the times you were crying and sobbing because of him.
“I…I can forgive you for this—the call…” Harry let out a sigh of relief, but you aren’t finished yet. “But all the other stuff, I can’t.” Harry tenses again. “You’ve hurt me so badly, and I don’t know if I can forgive that.”
“Just stop hating me for one second!”
“Stop hating you? Like it’s easy? You hurt me, Harry! You left when I needed you the most and a month later you were spotted with another woman! You left a week after my dad died! If that’s not the most fucked up thing ever then don’t tell me to stop hating you because you really did a number on my heart.” You tell him, practically yelling at him.
“I know I did. I know. You don’t think it haunts me every minute of my life knowing that I could have completely avoided the hatred you have for me?” Your breath hitched in your throat. You open your mouth, but he’s already speaking again before you had a chance to speak. “Because it does. It’ll haunt me for the rest of my life even if you had an ounce of forgiveness for me, it’ll still haunt me.”
You and Harry stay silent, taking in what he said. You haven’t fought like this ever with, even when you were together. You’ve had arguments and disagreements, just like every couple, but never to the point where you were practically screaming at each other. It was something so different that it startled you. You didn’t recognize yourself, nor did he.
“The reason why I left you was because there was this pressure that was in my chest, telling me that I wasn’t good enough. I wasn’t strong enough. I wasn’t made out to be who the fans made me out to be. I didn’t want to be that person for you. You deserve so much better than me, and yeah, I ruined it.” He looks down as he’s done, feeling the remorse for what he did a year ago. “I couldn’t promise you all of me because I didn’t even know who I was at the time.” Harry started to cry, and all you wanted to do was reach out and hold his hand and pull him in for a hug, making his sadness go away. But you don’t.
“Why did you get together with her anyways? And so soon after the breakup?” You wanted answers. You’ve been wanting answers ever since the day he walked out.
“She was…there. We were friends before you and I got together. Just friends. Then when I saw her again and we were drunk. And we had sex-”
“I don’t wanna hear how you fucked her, Harry.”
“No! I don’t even remember it. When I woke up, I immediately regretted it. I cried for hours. And that was the first and last time we were in physical contact with each other. And she also needed a place to stay for a bit, and I have plenty of rooms.” The silence between you was thick. The only thing that was heard were yours and Harry’s sniffling, and heavy breathing that felt so constricting to your heart that it wouldn’t allow you to exhale.
“I don’t-” you start, but cut yourself off, not knowing what exactly you should say.
“I still love you.” Your eyes perk up, widening at shock of what he confessed, and your eyes immediately water up.
“No, you don’t.” You deny as you shake your head, and Harry takes a step forward.
“Yes, I do. I’m still in love with you.” You continuously keep shaking your head, and slightly push at his chest, which didn’t do much with his built frame. You haven’t heard those words in so long, and in all honesty, you’ve missed it. A lot. But denial got the best of you.
“Stop.” You say, but you don’t want him to. He takes another step forward.
“I love you.” You push again, and your tears flow free from your eyes.
“Stop fucking saying that!” You yell, but Harry knows you don’t want him to stop. You have a sort of desperation in your eyes that keeps pleading him to continue, to keep telling you that he loves you and he hasn’t stopped. “Say that one more fucking time, I dare you.”
Harry doesn’t say it right away, but instead he looks you deeply in the eyes, wanting the message to travel from your brain to your veins. He takes a step forward, pushing your chests together as he holds your hands by your sides.
“I’m still so in love with you. Always have been, always will be.”
Your eyes are so deeply locked with his that you’re trying to find a single pinch of untruthfulness. It’s 15 seconds of silence, but to Harry it feels like it lasts forever. He wondered what you were looking for when you looked into his eyes. The truth? Possibly. For him to take it back? Maybe. It’s what was next that had taken him by surprise.
Your lips instantly crash with his hard, and Harry stumbles back from the collision, but he doesn’t complain. He instead takes your face in his hands to push you closer to him. Teeth clashing and tongues meet, sending every fiber in your body pouring with passion into each other. You grab a fistful of Harry’s hair, just how he likes it, and he wraps both his arms around your waist to keep you close, just how you like it.
It’s been long overdue since Harry has had a taste of your lips, and he really hopes that he won’t go too long without them ever again because he has you. Forever.
You both moan into each other’s mouths, feeling overwhelmed from the touch and taste of each other. Electrical sparks have ran through your body, feeling the pull that is Harry. You felt at home with each other; holding onto one another like your life depended on it. The feeling of each other’s arms around each other was one you couldn’t put into words, so you don’t say anything, neither of you do. You just cuddle into his chest as Harry buries his face into your hair, and when you think of this moment, it’ll be that time under the canyon moon.
͙⁺˚*・༓☾ ☽༓・*˚⁺‧
And just like that, the trip is over.
It was indeed a long, but well deserved trip for all of you. Lina and Dan had a great time spending their 30th anniversary as a married couple, and they were all smiles, laughter, and love the whole trip.
When you woke up, you stayed still. Body not moving, not like it wanted to. Your mind was everywhere. Your skin felt like it was crawling to different places. And your face was emotionless.
You felt a body beside you, making you snap out of your gaze that was sighted out the window, watching the water create small waves due to the current. Your body found its ability to move again, and you turned on your other side, facing the conscious person who had just woken up.
“Mm, morning.”
“Hi,” you responded.
“You okay?” You only nod. “Listen, I don’t know what happened with Harry, but you’re gonna have to talk to him, y’know?” You knew Minny was right. She always is.
After the breathtaking kiss with Harry, you had stared in his eyes, and for a brief moment, you smiled. You gave him your famous smile that took his breath away.
He fell in love with that smile the same moment he fell in love with you, which was when he first met you. You had made a joke to him and ended it off with your pretty smile, and he laughed, which made you smile even bigger.
He longs for your smile when he’s had a long day. When he comes home and finds you wrapped around in blankets while watching TV, or when he comes home, and you turn around flashing your smile as you’re cooking his favorite dish; having lovers telepathy and saying that you felt like you would need a night of care and pamper. As you remind him that everything will be alright as you scratch his head that’s on your chest, he believes you.
He needs your smile like he needs air. First thing in the morning, he would move so you’re face to face with him, even though you’re still sleeping, and he would pepper you with sweet kisses so you would wake up. And eventually, after pushing his face away, you would wake up and the first thing you would do is smile, meeting eyes with the love of your life. The first thing when he opens his eyes, yearning for your smile like it’s his life line.
And it made his insides melt. He was weak for you. He was ice and you were the sun, and he would lay there while you beam brightly down on him, making him melt all his worries away. He needed you.
But when that moment went away quickly for you, and you no longer smiled up at him as your lips were swollen from a sensational kiss. That moment when your eyes turned from fond to regret was when Harry felt like his heart was being ripped out of his chest. When he had thought of your smile as air, he meant it. His lifeline had flatlined, and as you’re backing away from him, there was nothing you can do anymore.
“I’m sorry,” you say as you head for the door.
“Darling, please,” he pleads, begging for you to stay and say everything is okay. But you do the exact opposite, and you’re out his sight while tears have continued to flow down.
“That’s the last of it.” Dan said to everyone as he closed the trunk.
Everyone was exhausted and ready to leave by before noon, making it easier to lock up since everyone was leaving at the same time.
Harry had made his way, saying goodbye to everyone, giving them a big hug and thanking them for letting him stay. It was quick, too quick for your liking as you weren’t prepared for what he was going to do when he gets to you. Was he going to ignore you? Be short with you? You thought you really deserved his cruelty, you did walk out on him after kissing him since a year ago.
He was right in front of you, and you looked up, taking in his appearance. His eyes were swollen and had bags under them, probably not getting much sleep either, and you had caused it. You wanted to reach out to him, tell him you’re sorry, but nothing came out of your mouth as you were trying to speak. And it seemed like Harry wanted you to say something as well, but was disappointed when you didn’t.
“Are you riding with me?” He asks.
“I’m actually going with Minny, if that’s alright.” Harry nodded, trying to keep his emotions at bay.
“Okay. Are you heading home?”
“Yeah, going home finally.” You slightly chuckle, trying to lighten up the tension between you two.
“Right. Well, I’ll see you around.” He turns around before you even have a chance to respond.
“Drive safe.” You call out, and he turns his head, giving you a soft smile, but you noticed how sad he was.
The drive back to the city was a long one, but it gave you the chance to do a lot of thinking. It seemed like you were always thinking way too hard for your mind to handle, but you really needed to think.
And your favorite topic to think about: Harry.
You had missed him without a doubt. The trip gave you the realization of how much fun and how comfortable you are around him. You missed his jokester and cheesy side, and being around him in general.
It was all fun and games until you had followed him as he was taking a call, and everything that led to the kiss.
The kiss. Fuck.
It was everything you needed. You needed and longed for his physical touch that included your lips, and when it happened, the hairs on your skin began to stand, sending chills down your body.
His confession that he still loves you made you want to cry. A whole year of thinking about what you had done wrong for him to leave you all washed away once he said those words. You didn’t know what to do, but deny it. You didn’t want to believe him because you didn’t know about the chances of you getting hurt again, but you knew that it’ll break you.
But you do believe in second chances. Even if the second chances were with someone you love because, yeah, you’re still deeply in love with Harry Styles.
Harry entered his home with a sigh. He walked into the house, glad that it’s empty as he told his company that she had to find someplace else to stay. He had felt bad, but he really didn’t want to put up with her or talk to anyone at this point.
It had been a long and tiring trip, but nonetheless, he had fun. Now he wanted—needed a long shower and some food because he had forgotten to take some snacks for his drive, so his stomach was growling, begging for him to eat someone.
He was removing the contents from his duffel, something he made sure to do every time he came home from traveling, and making a mental note to do laundry after he showers.
Harry was just about to remove his clothes for his shower until he heard a knock on his door. He groaned, not wanting to interact with anyone today, but still walked to get the door.
But you weren’t just anyone.
He was surprised to see you, standing on his doorstep with your luggage from the trip next to you. “Hi.” You smile at him. “What are you doing here?” Harry looks down, completely avoiding eye contact. It hurts him too much to even think about how things went down between you two.
“Do you have company?” You ask nervously, referring to the woman that was staying in his home and you didn’t want to intrude on anything.
“No. Told her to leave before I got home.” You nod, feeling relieved that no one was in his home except him. “So, what are you doing here?” He asks again.
“When I said I was going home, I meant to you.”
Harry freezes, taking in your words. He finally looks up at your eyes, and it’s filled with tears, hoping he’ll take you in. He was confused about what changed your mind, but didn’t complain because the corners of his mouth lifted up. He takes a step forward and you grab his hands, bring them to your mouth to press soft kisses on them.
“Really?”
“Yeah. We still need to talk, but I’ve been gone too long from you.”
that’s it! thank you for reading! epilogue will soon be on its way <3
feedback pls!

Close enough to 10 mintues of “Ms Axel is a Goon”
Screw it. I'm posting it here, too. *NOTE: This is 100% fictitious and not going to happen*
Final Assignment Script Writing, Winter School 2021 ONE-PAGE PITCH
TITLE: Ms Axel is a Goon
GENRE: Action, comedy, sci-fi, family
LOGLINE: In the humid city of Dasmus, Mei Axel is a former goon who's just escaped captivity. Since her escape, she's been trying to better her life with her new found passion for music, but she quickly learns that the entire country wants to trade her name and face for a price.
FORMAT: Full-length animated film
MAJOR AND RECURRING CHARACTERS: Mei Axel – A wanted fugitive. Mid 20s. Despite her physical competence, she's mostly a foolish, plucky girl who steals a guitar one day.
Alicia Vonarb – CEO of a liquor company. Late 30s. The last boss to hire Axel to do her sneaky business work. Confident and vain, but does everything in spite of her mother. Wants to capture Axel because she doesn't want to get ratted out.
Kannie Orma – An old gadgeteer friend of Axel’s. Mid 50s. Also a “lame uncle” sort of figure to Axel. Their friendship must remain secret because his work is also involved with Vonarb.
O. Miho - Axel’s former coworker from when she was working for Vonarb. Early 30s. His current assignment is to capture Axel. Smug and thinks he's funny.
K. Claymont – Axel’s other former coworker. Late 20s. Works together with Miho. A kind man, but only most of the time.
SYNOPSIS: Mei Axel. She's a goon that's been caught and jailed. Eventually enough, she makes a successful escape and ventures outside. Not much happens afterwards other than stealing a guitar, and once discovering that she's got a passion for music, now she aims to live up that dream. But while attempting to live her new life, her face still reads as an incompetent menace to her former friends and foes, as well as to the majority of the country – they all seem to want to trade in her face for a cash reward. Now, aside from escaping the hands of everyone that wants to hand her over to the government, it is now up to Ms Axel to figure out how she is going to be able to pursue her new life goal that heavily conflicts with her current place among her people. This first follows the story of a wanted fugitive who sets off on a quest for redemption which, unfortunately, never works out. The story ends when Axel eventually escapes the country. She finally acknowledges that she can never truly change the way she's perceived, as well as never fully experience the life that she wants. However, she still performs under a low profile, happily living a drifter's lifestyle.
RATIONALE: This is a story about someone whose wrongdoings and nurture had shaped the way that others view them. Our protagonist is Mei Axel who had been built up to become a significantly infamous member of society, but once discovering a part of herself that showed her potential in a more respected position, being a musician, she starts wanting to better herself. A problem with this scenario is that her past actions prevent her from fully achieving that dream. She can relate to audiences who want to change aspects of their past, particularly their mistakes or the wrong ways they've been brought up, but can't.
MARKET: Children ranging from 11-16, particularly those that are interested in scenes that involve action-packed chases and fighting between individuals. The [film] will present itself through retro-futuristic aesthetics in its city setting. Rock is also a prevalent music genre for the soundtrack, which may interest audiences who particularly like the genre.
The Script
EXT. BUILDINGTOP – NIGHT
Axel checks out the guitar from every angle with a grin, having a feel of its neck, strings and body. She sits it on her lap as if to play it.
AXEL
Oh... I hope those lessons never went to waste...
She wobbly plays a C major scale while slightly wincing through every second. She runs over the same scale again, but this time it flows a bit more smoothly. She smiles a little.
MONTAGE OF AXEL PRACTISING GUITAR
- Axel goes over the same scale a couple of times and with every run, her playing gets smoother.
- She then moves on to a different key and practises that scale
- She then moves on to another key and practises that scale
- She plays some chords now, beginning with the I IV V I progression
MONTAGE END
Axel continues strumming. A light turns on from a nearby building.
DWELLER
Who is playing that garbage?!
Axel stops strumming. Silence.
AXEL
(Breathes in)
I'll get the hang of it.
She slings the guitar over her back and runs into the shadows. Eventually, she disappears into the dark.
EXT. MARKETPLACE – DAY
A view of a cranny on a roof between two walls. Axel sleeps there resting her guitar on her lap. Waking up, she yawns and then lazily sits up.
CUT TO:
A view of the market grounds. Axel smugly and excitedly, yet discreetly scurries out of an alley between a bakery and a liquor store, with a paper doughnut bag in one hand and a small bottle of liquor in the other.
She sits by a cafe playing some instrumental reggae rock music through a speaker. Axel hums along to the melody of the soundtrack while tipsily bouncing her finger to the beat. She then quickly strums a few chords for a brief moment, all which clash with the song's key signature, until right on the chorus, where she strums a chord that matches the root note of the song.
AXEL
Ooh, it's a G song. God, why do they always gotta be G songs? (Giggles)
She strums along with the music, landing every chord. Her smile grows and she gradually plays more confidently. She whistles the melody, then proceeds to hum. A TEENAGE BOY chucks a coin in front of her. Axel looks up and grins. She finger guns at him as he skids away to his friends, laughing. Axel stands up and plays more purposefully. The background starts dimming down.
DAYDREAM
Soon the marketplace around her blends into a stage. An abstractly drawn audience watches her perform and cheer her on. The chorus section of the song finishes.
AXEL
(Laughs)
I'm going to be known! I'll make myself the talk of the town! Everybody's gonna love me!
Axel starts strumming along to the background music again. Suddenly, a MAN with a large, muscular build grabs onto her shoulder.
END DAYDREAM
The stage fades back into the marketplace. Axel is still strumming.
MAN
You got that last part wrong.
AXEL
And who are you?
The man bats Axel with a club.
OVER BLACK.
SFX: Walking footsteps.
EXT. DESOLATE CITY AREA – DAY
In an alleyway, the man carries a bag containing Axel's body, also with Axel's guitar strapped around his back. After some time, Axel can be seen moving inside of the bag.
MAN
Huh? Hey. You keep still down there, would you?
Axel still moves inside of the bag.
MAN (CONT'D)
Look, this is goin'a be a long walk. That means you better cooperate with me, you hear that, Girlie? (Pause) You don't want to make me hurt you, now--
Axel falls out of a hole the bag with a shank in one hand and one of her boots on the other.
MAN
What the?!
The man looks behind himself while Axel stands up in front of him, holding her boot in both hands. She sends a finishing blow at the back of man's head and he falls to the floor. Axel cautiously looks at the man for a brief moment.
The man lies motionlessly on the ground. Axel drops her boot and fixes her shank back inside her pocket, then dusts off her hands before then squatting down next to him.
AXEL
Gosh, they really never hired me for nothing, huh... But I ain't into that stuff anymore. Say, can I have my guitar back?
The man does not respond. Axel lifts one of the man's eyelids and learns that he's out cold. Axel sighs with a slight chuckle. She lifts up the man and, with a struggle, unstraps the guitar from his body, before eventually slinging it over her own. Once fitting her boot back on, she then stands up and slowly walks over to the edge of the alley, whistling a chipper tune – the same melody she was playing earlier - on her way there. At the edge of the alleyway, her eyes look up. Then they widen.
INSERT – ELECTRONIC POSTER
containing Axel's mugshot and in large writing, "WANTED". Below is a list of details including Axel's height, approximate age, gender, race and the time and location of where she was last seen, “18:50, Southwest of Dasmus City”. There is also a cash prize.
INSERT – ELECTRONIC POSTER
containing the same contents as the previous poster, except the location which reads, “Southern markets of Dasmus City at 15:47, drunkenly playing a red Phenver brand guitar”.
A view of Axel between the alley's walls. All around are copies of the same two posters, both in electronic and printed forms. A mildly shocked expression crosses her face.
INT. TOILETS – DAY
A view of a row of toilet stalls. None of the stalls' doors are closed, except for the one in the centre. Axel's guitar leans on a nearby wall. Her feet can be seen in the gap between the bottom of the door and the floor. Axel kicks the wall.
AXEL
Damn it! I'm such an idiot! What was I thinking?! Me? A musician? That's just one way to draw attention!
VONARB (O.S)
Axel? Is that you?
AXEL (CONT'D)
I can't b-- (Pause) Ms Vonarb?
Axel immediately opens her stall's door and looks in the direction of ALICIA VONARB'S voice. Vonarb walks towards Axel.
VONARB
And to think I'd meet you here of all places?
AXEL
I never expected to see you here, either.
VONARB
Well, isn't this quite the reunion?
AXEL
Eh. Not really.
VONARB
I'm surprised you got clever enough to get yourself out of prison.
Axel exits her stall.
AXEL
So, is that to say you're impressed with me?
VONARB
Nope. How'd you think I found you here so easily?
AXEL
Easily? That was easy?
VONARB
Anyway... Don't think I came trying to find you for no reason, now.
AXEL
Oh yeah! Coincidentally, I'm a bit short on cash. You don't happen to want to hire me again, don't you?
VONARB
(Laughs)
What? After getting yourself thrown in jail?
AXEL
Oh... (Pause) What are you even here for, anyway?
VONARB
Well. First of all... (Clears throat) Whatever you do, please don't take this the wrong way.
AXEL
Huh?
Silence. The two stare at each other. Axel tilts her head in confusion. Eventually, O MIHO and K CLAYMONT enter the room. Miho holds a taser while Claymont holds a bag.
CLAYMONT
Now, I don't mean to spread any panic or alarm--
AXEL
(Gasps)
You gotta be kidding me!
VONARB
I just said to not take it the wrong way--
AXEL
I knew it! You are as easy to see through as a window! It's 'cause of my “WANTED” sign, isn't it, Vonarb?
VONARB
Wrong!
AXEL
Huh?
VONARB
You see, we're here to keep you away from those authorities. And knowing you, you're probably so incompetent that you'd just wind up stuck in prison again! So, since you're with us, you're going nowhere.
AXEL
What? Why?
VONARB
You're pretty infamous now. And I've got my business to worry about, too. So, if it didn't all add up in that brain of yours, let's just say, I don't want to risk you ratting me out.
AXEL
Yeah, I'm not doing that!
Grabbing her guitar, Axel jumps on the sinks and runs along them. Miho runs to tase her. Axel whacks him with her guitar and then heads right out the door. Claymont follows.
CLAYMONT (O.S)
I got it!
EXT. CITY STREETS – DAY
A view of the front of a pub. There is people scattered everywhere. Suddenly, the door swings right open and Axel sprints outside with her guitar now strapped over her back. She continues along the street. Claymont chases right after.
