okay but when Madeline Miller said “I would know him in death, at the end of the world” and when she said “when he died, all thing soft and beautiful and bright would be buried with him” and when she said “i am made of memories” and when she said “i feel like i could eat the world raw” and when she said “he is half my soul, as the poets say” and when she said “this and this and this” and when-

I am once again spiraling about the song of achilles (I mean, I guess I'm never NOT spiraling about it.)
here are the lines stuck in my head today~
“Patroclus, he says, Patroclus. Patroclus. Over and over until it is sound only.”
"‘It is time to return Hector's body to his family for burial. You have killed him and taken your vengeance. It is enough.’ ‘It will never be enough,’ he says.”
“Achilles' gaze lifts to meet hers. She is afraid, but does not draw back. ‘I hope that Hector kills you.’ The breath rasps in his throat. ‘Do you think I do not hope the same?’ he asks.”
“His ashes settle among mine, and I feel nothing.”

“You are a terribly real thing in a terribly false world and that, I believe, is why you’re in so much pain.”
and
“I think you know how to love better than any of us. That’s why you find it all so painful.”
and
“I thought if someone like that ever loved me, it would set me on fire.”
and
“He showed me his scars, and in return he let me pretend I had none.”
and
“When he died, all things soft and beautiful and bright would be buried with him.”
all currently have me in a fucking chokehold

It is the only memory I have of my mother and so golden that I am almost sure I have made it up.
Tumblr media
I looked down at the leather reins, smoothed their nap with my thumb. I did not understand my place here.
Tumblr media
I would have no parents, no family name, no inheritance. In our day, death was preferable.
Tumblr media
I could still remember the dark wreath against his bright hair, the way his pink soles had flashed along the track. That is what a son should be.
Tumblr media
This is how I first began to understand my place here. Until this moment I had been a prince, expected and announced. Now I was negligible.
Tumblr media
I had been raised in a court and knew dismissal when I heard it.
Tumblr media
I was easy to ignore. It was not so very different from home, really.
Tumblr media
“I have been looking for you,” he said.
Tumblr media
“Patroclus.” Achilles did not slur my name, as people often did, running it together as if in a hurry to be rid of it. Instead, he rang each syllable: Pa-tro-clus.
Tumblr media
I will make him look at me, I thought.

“I thought of how many nights I had lain awake in this room loving him in silence.
Later, Achilles pressed close for a final, drowsy whisper, ‘If you have to go, you know I will go with you.’ We slept.”

“Achilles weeps. He cradles me, and will not eat, not speak a word other than my name. I see his face as if through water, as a fish sees the sun. His tears fall, but I cannot wipe them away. This is my element now, the half-life of the unburied spirit.”

I will recognize you in total darkness, were you mute and deaf. I will recognize you in another lifetime entirely, in different bodies, different times and I will love you in all of this, until the very last star in the sky burnt out into oblivion.
— Achilles

The way that after Patroclus died, Achilles slept next to his corpse, fought a river God, butchered Hector and dragged his body around Troy several times with his chariot.
“He is half of my soul, as the poets say”.
Patroclus literally was Achilles’ impulse control. He was the half with the empathy and the generosity and the immense kindness. When he died, all that was left of Achilles was a human weapon.
Literally how destructively beautiful is that. Imagine the depth of this love. *lets out a mental guttural scream and sob*

I conjure the boy I knew. Achilles, grinning as the figs blur in his hands. His green eyes laughing into mine. Catch, he says. Achilles, outlined against the sky, hanging from a branch over the river. The thick warmth of his sleepy breath against my ear. If you have to go, I will go with you. My fears forgotten in the golden harbor of his arms.
