“Patrochilles is real,” I say into the mic, the crowd boos. I begin to walk off the stage in shame. “No, she’s right!” I hear a voice in the back say. The lights come on. It's Alexander the Great.

Between Achilles and Patroclus, it was always Patroclus who followed Achilles. To Chiron,to the Island of Scyros and to Troy. But in the end, it was Achilles who followed Patroclus to death.

Achilles jokes about his mother kidnapping him when she finds out about his relationship with Patroclus, but Thetis does kidnap Achilles after she sees how close they've become when they return to Pthia from Mount Pelion. Achilles believes that Thetis kidnapped him to protect him from the war, but that forcing him to marry Deidameia and have a child with her was because of his relationship with Patroclus. Thetis tried to do everything possible to repel Achilles and Patroclus, stopping not only at taking Achilles to a place where no one in his previous life was supposed to find him, but stopping only when Achilles was married, forced to lie with a woman, and childbound.
Achilles complied only because Thetis promised to tell Patroclus his location if he did her bidding, although she never intended to keep this promise. Achilles only knew his mothers lie when Patroclus came and told him that he went through all that pain for nothing. It wouldn't have mattered if he complied with his mothers cruel wishes, at this point in the book Thetis was never going to willingly bring Patroclus back into Achilles life. She forced him into a marriage and a family to hurt him, hoping that Patroclus would despise him for it, and hoping that Achilles would feel obligated to live this new life without him.
She tried to kill Patroclus from Achilles life, in all of the ways that mattered most to them.

He had chosen to become a legend, and this was the beginning. He hesitated, and I touched my hand to his where the crowd could not see it. ‘Go,’ I urged him. ‘They are waiting for you.’
