Text
just read dark night dark city and im desperately trying to be normal about it :)
the city is haunted! and we her playthings! and we are trapped in her! ans she is trapped in us! and the city is cursed, built on the blood of others! and kindness can save her!
but also bruce at the end! the rationalism in wich he folds it into his worldview! you must be blind to the labyrinth! if you see it as the thing that traps you you are horrified! we make our storys and mould our perceptions!! you cant keep in your mind the realizations, it slips out your brain after, leaving a hole you dont even know is there! and you are either driven mad by the lost knowleg or brush against it and are content w the fact you knew it, but can no longer. you were the ant horrified at the knowledge and information and importance, now an ant over boxy terrain. you are aware of something bigger but you cannot look. it will not let you. you wont let you. in the end, whats the difference?

Substitute City Ghost
Clockwork had a plan. Their young king needed to learn how to take care of people without the kind of hero like fighting he did in Amity Park. There was a lot to learn for the young halfa and his king classes could only cover so much. Thus he had found a plan that would give his king the perfect learning expirence while also helping out his recently new friend. Well not that new since his friend was quite an old ghost of their own. But he had only recently made direct contact with her.
Lady Gotham was an old and powerful ghost. Born from the beliefs of her city and strengthened by the once living and protecting it. But she was stretching herself thin. Managing her city, helping the dead find their way, looking out for the shades, and protecting the weaker entities, was already a lot of responsibilities for a city ghost. But Lady Gotham has added more to her plate, supporting those that protect her city. Mortals that she called her knights. Aiding them by controlling the shadows, guiding those that need help toward them, or the other way around, guiding her knights to those that needed help. She was strong, but even a ghost like her could grow exhausted. His friend needed rest and recharge. Surely Lady Gotham wouldn't say no if he invited her to a vacation to the Realms, and in that same invitation, he would direct his king to his new hands on training.
The bats and birds knew something was different about Gotham lately. It was strange and slightly unsettling. The change felt like it had just happened overnight. They were suspicious, wondering if they were sensing one of their rogues planning something big. Jason and Duke appeared to sense it the most.
At first, it didn't appear to be too big of a problem, but then strange things started to happen. Their rogues started tripping over, seemingly nothing. And if that wasn't enough it appeared like their rogues were a whole lot more inattentive to their surroundings. Now the Bats and birds were good at sneaking, but they had human limits. Yet there were times they snuck up on them like they weren't even seen.
Dick swore that one of the goons had stared at him and didn't see him, even though he had tried to pull the tap their shoulder and greet them before punching them act. The guy had turned around and stared at him before looking around like no one was even there until he punched the guy anyway.
And that wasn't even the weirdest part. Bullets, throwing knives or anything aimed and thrown at them never hit their marks. Not for the lag of them dodging but for the things they were sure they shouldn't have been able to react in time for. Tim espacially had pointed out that a bullet should have hit him once but it never even graced him. Yet when he checked the place after the arrest. There had been a clear bullet hole in the wall where he had been.
They weren't sure if it was a blessing or a curse. They had even tried to get a member of the Justice League Dark to look into it. But strangely enough Constantine had refused to even set foot into Gotham for once, and even insisted that the other do not either.
To say that Batman was not amused would have been a very big understatement. The man was brooding. And of course Dick had to jinx them too. The eldest bat kid had to mention that it at least wasn't getting worse.
And don't you know it. It got worse. Like weirdly alarming strangely worse.
Because, how else would you define it when you're in the middle of a briefing with your patrol partner for the night when suddenly a Lazarus Pit look alike portal opens below your feed swallowed you up and the freaking drops you into the middle of a crime scene or mugging.
It was only thanks to their training that they were able to react quickly enough after a bound of disorientation. But fuck did that gave them all a good damn heart attacks when that happened the first time to Damian of all people.
Something was definitely wrong with their city. Thankfully they had some sort of hint, because the first time the Pit portal happened to Duke, he claimed that he saw a white haired figure right before it had swallowed him hole and spit him out at a bank robbery.
Danny was honestly believing he was doing a good job as substitute city spirit while Lady Gotham was enjoying her vacation. Sure , he still had trouble with some things, but he was sure he was getting the hang of the whole supporting the cities vigilantes gig Lady Gotham had going on. The whole managing the shades and the dead spirits was still up in the air, though. But at least he had figured out a way easier way to guide the vigilantes towards the once that needed help.
Now he just needed to figure out what was wrong with that one guy in the red helmet and he was sure that both Clockwork and Lady Gotham would be proud of him and how he had managed her city during her vacation.

Tim Drake, Danny’s human identity in this universe, is a boy trapped in an empty manor with absentee parents a low socialization.
Danny Phantom, on the other hand, is Gotham City himself. He could fly, he could interact, he could be the heart of his city like he needs to be. From the lowest of the lows to the highest of the highs, Danny loved the people that were his. Well, most of them. Child molesters often found themselves crossing paths with a vengeful, mostly recovered Robin.
He is the city, he is Gotham. And with his status came more changes, ones he welcomes more readily that the changes that came with his title of Ghost King.
Being a city couldn’t change him as much as it would have, had he gained the title before becoming King. But now, his shadows are dark, curling around his shoulders and curling away what little light he allowed into his city. His skin, having once glittered green with stars and galaxies and black holes, clouds over just a bit. It gives him a misty quality. His hands become sharper, stronger. Gargoyle-like. He wonders what he looked like to Batman, holding his broken son cradled safely to himself. He’s crueler, now, but that’s easily balanced by his years of being a vigilante himself.
He loves these changes. They are loved in a way changing into Dead Danny Phantom and Ghost King Danny Phantom will never be loved. And even though his human features are different in a way he never had to deal with as Danny Fenton, because it was his body that he died in, Danny finds himself enjoying the distinction. And he enjoys when they combine, because in the end, they’re just facets of who he is, now.
Gotham flies through his city, and enjoys it as a whole. A bigger picture.
Tim Drake walks through his city, and enjoys it as an individual. The smaller picture.
Being Gotham reminds him of what he had to protect as a whole. A duty he gladly bears.
Being Tim reminds him of the people he’s meant to help, the stories he doesn’t get as Danny. A connection he gladly encouraged.
Gotham is power. He is duty, he is fierce love. But for the good of the whole.
Tim is kindness. He is choice, he is gentle devotion. But for the good of the individual.
He’s both.
Danny. Danny Phantom.
Phantom glides through the smog.
The ebb and flow of people is his life blood, the thrumming of life and death and fear and hate and love and everything the city is sung through him and Danny sung back with everything he had. Danny is the gargoyles perched high, watching everything. He’s the stone curves of the sewers, sheltering his rats and mutant murderous crocodile man. The is no love comparable to a city’s mutant rats and their sewers. Ancients, he loves his city.
It would be nice, Danny thinks wryly, if they’d love me enough to stop blowing up buildings.
The sting of destruction to his city would hurt much more, had he not also been King. Regardless, every time there’s an explosion or general large scale property damage, he feels a stab of mild pain. Catching sight of his Bats, Danny stays invisible while following them. He wills the shadows to cradle them, to hide them further. He softens the stone, the mortar, the steel, just a hint. Their footsteps, silent and aided by the city himself. The wind steal away the noise of the grappling guns, so when Danny’s favorite vigilante duo (a fascination he shared with original text!Tim) broke into the building, not a single soul aside them are aware of the intrusion.
Batman skulks across the support beams, Robin following with an anticipatory grin. Danny floats, invisible, undetectable, besides them.
“C’mon!” A goon grunts beneath them. Danny tilts his head. A… Dresden Aberthy. Wow. That’s one hell of a name.
“Hurry it up! Boss said Batman’s going to get here soon!” Another goon- Robbert- said, waving around a gun like a moron at the terrified hostages. Danny could tell half of them were part of a tour bus, mostly because the other half were his Gothamites, bored and unfairly used to this kind of thing. The tourists… He’s fond of them, having kept track of their progress through his city. He doesn’t care for intruders on his haunt, but tourists like to appreciate his city and its doubtlessly Sam-approved architecture. Most of them. Rude tourists get pigeon shit on their heads and food stolen by his lovely rats.
He’ll have to make sure none of the bullets hit the tourists. He likes this group, even if he has enough awareness to question their sanity in choosing his city to sightsee. He knows it’s a mess. It’s Danny’s mess though, so whatever.
——
All said and done, Batman whoops ass and Robin rescues the hostages just fine. Danny grins proudly as Robin knees a guy in the crotch and punches a lady’s throat in order to incapacitate them.
After they tied the goons up, and interrogated them for Two Face’s plans- explode a quarter of Gotham to distract the Bats from his diabolical plan to murder half of Gotham’s judges and lawyers that have been going after him and his people- the duo retreats to the rooftop.
“Didja think Gotham saw that?”
Batman goes to reply, but Danny beats him to it, coming back to visibility with a wind touched laugh.
“I did, little Robin.” Danny smiles, fangs and shadows on display as his vigilantes startles and whips around to face him. “You did well.”
Robin- Jason!- gapes at him.
“I see you’ve recovered, little bird.”
“Gotham! Oh. Wow. People always said Gotham was a lady, but you’re a guy!”
“It was a Lady,” Danny confirmed. “It’s complicated, little bird.”
“So, you’re really… you’re really Gotham? The city?”
Danny looks at Robin with the weight of the city behind his gaze.
“I think you know the answer to that. But yes, I am your city.”
“Constantine,” Batman starts. “He said that city spirits only appear in times of grave danger.”
There is deference in his words. Batman is Batman for Gotham, after all. Danny just wishes he could… well, be friendlier with his knights. May this is a good place to start.
Are you in danger? What threats do we need to handle? How can I help? How can I protect? Please, let me help.
His Knight always felt more than he ever says. Danny smiles.
“Was Robin’s wellbeing not in grave danger?” Danny floats closer. “I am your city. You protect me, it is only right that I protect you, no?”
“Thank you for saving me, Gotham!” Robin’s grin is a touch more sincere than usual.
“Of course, Robin. You are loved.”
“Is there… a reason you’ve shown yourself today? Gotham.”
Danny chuckles, understanding the awkwardness that was Batman addressing someone with deference.
“I wanted to tell you that you did well tonight. Those tourists weren’t harmed in the slightest. Well done.” Danny gave Robin a playful but sincere thumbs up.
“They weren’t a match for us!”
“No, they weren’t.” Danny ruffles Robin’s hair, noticing how still he grew at it. “Robin was too fast for them. That maneuver at the end was masterfully executed.”
Batman clears his throat and Danny resists the urge to laugh at him. It would be mean.
“Thank you, for the… praise.”
Fuck it. He’s played well behaved for too long.
“Yes. I read in child rearing books that positive reinforcement is necessary for healthy development. You did well, Batman.”
Despite trolling Batman- and somehow holding a straight (and hopefully wise face)- he meant every word.
Allowing a small smile to slip at Robin’s chortles and Batman’s quiet sputtering, Danny moves on.
“Where is Nightwing, Batman?”
“He’s still on a mission...”
“If it is awkward to refer to me as Gotham, Phantom will do.”
Batman dips his head once. “In space, with the Teen Titans.”
“I see. Please tell him I request his presence,” Danny barely waits for Batman’s oddly acquiescing agreement before summoning a pigeon.
“Follow her,” Danny instructs the duo. “She’ll lead you to the places with explosives. I will guide you through her, to Harvey Dent.”
Danny winces as another explosion rings out.
“Your face is cracking!” Robin exclaimed, worried. He surged forward to stare at the hairline cracks appearing on Danny’s jaw.
“That would be the explosives. Any damage to the city will be shown on me.”
“Well take care of it.” Batman growled, shoulders straightening once more into an imposing symbol.
“Yeah!”
“I know you will. Stay safe.” Danny disappears, spreading his awareness and directing his Birds to the explosives that will go off the fastest.
Batman and Robin share a glance and leaps off the roof, ready to save their city once more.
——
Tim Drake wanders around Crime Alley, and meets a blonde nine year old trying to throw hands at her absentee Riddler knockoff of a dad. He dodges the brick en route to his face and kicks the guy’s knees out.
“You okay?”
The girl blinks. She stares at her dad, groaning on the dirty street of crime alley, and flicks her gaze back up to Tim, who waits casually.
“Yep. I’m Stephanie. We’re gonna be friends now!”
She grins at him, a baby tooth missing, and Danny melts.
“Heck yeah. Tim!” He introduces himself for the first time in a long time.
Maybe with Stephanie around, he’ll finally use the name Tim? Maybe he’ll get used to it, finally!

Let me retire!
Danny was tired of being a hero, in addition to being a profession that paid with nothing more than mental exhaustion and ungrateful citizens, the halfa was tired of having to bandage his wounds day after day, tired of seeing both perspectives and not knowing which side take
Danny could understand ghosts, he could understand how their obsessions were a fundamental part of who they were as people and there were things they couldn't help. While he initially protected Amity from the ghosts, at some point he also had to protect the ghosts from Amity.
So, it's no wonder that as soon as he saw the founding of the "Justice League" he declared that he was going to retire. He told it to the ghosts, since the humans weren't going to pay much attention to him.
The problem was when 2 weeks later he had to come out of his early retirement because the League had labeled Amity as "neutral ground" and "dangerous" and they were "capturing" criminals, who weren't even criminals, Ember was giving a concert!
Frustrated, the halfa went to the Watchtower, it was supposed to be his retirement! stop ruining it!

Prompt 168
So. Apparently halfas are like phoenixes or something, which Danny would’ve really liked to know.
See, usually with ghosts if they’re forced to retreat to their cores they reform as was, but apparently, since they’re still partially living, schrodinger's people and all that, halfas have to regrow their body from scratch. At least that’s what he’s understanding from Frostbite.
But how come he has to deal with it? It’s Dan’s fault for trying to pull such a stunt! Oh, it’s either him or Vlad? Well fuck, he might have calmed down and is going to therapy in both the living realm and the Zone, but he’s waaay not equipped to raise a child except for like, monetarily wise.
Well dammit, how long will this core incubation thing last, he has his new job in… let him check which offer he accepted again… He has his new job in Coast City that he needs to finish packing for and then all the rest of the stuff to do.
What do you mean it’ll take months?! He doesn’t have months?! Urgh, fine. At least being a mortician isn’t that exciting, nor dangerous. Just hand him Dan’s core and he’ll figure things out for the living side of things. He’s sure Tucker and Sam wouldn’t be against helping, if only to try and claim favorite aunt or uncle spots.
#dcxdp#dpxdc#prompts#Coast City is where Hal Jordan lives hilarious enough#I just chose a random city but honestly a green lantern city is hilariously on brand for where Danny would choose to move#He’s just a cheerful space core dude who is glaring down several ghosts & helping others move on while he’s working#He’s also slightly uncanny valley to people outside of Amity & doesn’t realize it#He runs into a reporter Wes at some point & okay the fact he looks like the lady doing math meme when seeing Dan?#Utterly hilarious#Danny holding a newborn with matching slightly pointy ears and claws :)#Wes who is *pretty sure* Danny is cis but is second guessing everything now:#Danny is going to do his best to avoid any hero BS#He’s trying to do his JOB#Who cares if he brings his baby to work he needs to eat and he isn’t going to hire a babysitter#Bby Jordan tried to set the house on fire during his last tantrum do you THINK anyone else can deal with him? That’s what he thought now ou#Ellie visits as well & straight up melts out of the wall sometimes like a horror movie#She has weaponized her goo powers and is also excited to show her dad her new gravity ones#Space Core Danny + Fire Core Vlad = Sun Core Dan#Ellie has a Moon core (something something phases of the moon & travelling across the night sky)#Danny is encountering so many rogues and heroes and just doesn’t acknowledge it because he has a literal BABY who can destroy the entire JL#He’s very tired and would like a nap now

Dani gives people heart attacks and brings down a lot of trafficking rings, making friends along the way. Everything by accident, really
Dani traveled around world, hadn't she? While doing it, she had to meet a lot of interesting people.
Like heroes or villains.
In civies or not or both who knows.
But to actually learn things about someplace you have to spend more than one night there. Like, idk? Month? Probably more but I doubt she would be able to sit in one place for any longer. In many places she is shorter.
Month is long enough to create some connections though.
Enough to get someone to realize when you disappear...
Yeah, Dani on her way of gremlin and self discovery ghosted bunch of people without second thought. They'll probably forget her in few months anyway. And she was everywhere in USA. She didn't left American soil only because she didn't want to be too far from Danny in case of emergency. Before anyone tells me he was in space so he could fly to her wherever on Earth she would be, Earth's atmosphere ends about 100 km above sea level and officially this is border of space. Telecommunication satellites are between 8000 to 12000 km up. It's about how wide Atlantic Ocean is.
Plus y'know, time. If she needs help, she probably can't quite wait until he flies all the way to Hong Kong, Wladywostok, Rio de Janeiro or wherever she is.
So America it is. For now at least. When they're 100% sure she is stable she'll fly elsewhere.
Anyway people who she ghosted are used to batshit crazy stuff but "this tween is alone on her road to self discovery and just left for new city" isn't first thing anyone thought about. Maybe outside of Martians. They know. Everyone else? No idea what happened to this tiny, chaotic, snarky, probably meta child.
First thought though?
She got kidnapped.
So now 3/4 of Justice League, some individual heroes and bunch of less intense rogues are scrambling around their cities tracking every trafficking ring they found glimpses of, trying to find Dani.
Flashes work with Captain Cold on this and seem to slowly descend into madness. At the same time, Dani eats ice cream with nice museum lady from Washington who introduced herself as Diana. Then she helps at animal shelter with kind stuck up boy called Damian. Oh, Danny likes aliens, let's visit Martian Manhunter. Maybe she'll manage to get autograph for her template. Wait Space Cops? Kinda sucks but Danny would probably like their signatures too. Let's go. Oh, Superboys are fun mess with and older one is like her! This Nightwing guy puns like Danny but she always feels like he looks at her weirdly. Billy should eat more, magic or not, fighting is tiring. Good thing she has Sam's money to buy him burgers.
She has time of her life while people she met are slowly dying.
She probably doesn't even hide that she is traveling but for whatever reason they don't think she actually left.
They don't bring it up on any meeting because no matter how concerned they are, it's not really whole league type of business. And Martians just discreetly enjoy chaos.
There is a lot of ways it can get resolved (or not) but I kinda thought about Jon introducing his old buddy Damian to his new buddy Dani because he thinks they would get along and they just stare at each other for long moment before:
"Dani..."
"Dami!"
"WHY DID YOU LEFT WITHOUT A WORD! WE THOUGHT YOU WERE KIDNAPPED OR DEAD!"
Some screaming and revelation that Killer Croc was looking for her too, Dani hits moment of realisation.
"Wait, is this what people think when you just up and go?"
"Honestly? Yeah"
"Oh, Ancients I did this to so many people. So many..."
Idk, just Dani traveling and leaving people behind.
Do with it what you will

A Date in Exchange
(Part 1) (Part 2) (Part 3) (Part 4) (Part 5) (Part 6) (Part 7)
Oh goddamnit, why.
The villain can see the familiar car turning down the road towards them. They tip their head down in the vain hope that they’ll go unnoticed, and somehow it works—the car streaks past them, and they thank god that they don’t have to deal with that.
Thanking god, it turns out, means jack shit when the person they’re avoiding is the hero. The car appears next to them again not even five seconds later, having somehow turned around to trail after them.
“Get in,” the hero demands through the open window. The villain turns to give them a hearty scowl.
“I did that once and look how that turned out.” They pick up the pace—not that it gets them any further away. “No.”
“That’s why I wanted to talk to you.” The car mounts the pavement, alarmingly close to the villain and cutting off their path. They leap back slightly at the blatant crime, startled. “Just get in.”
The villain leans down to swing the door open with an irritated huff. “If you try to arrest me for showing you up in front of your parents I’ll be pissed.”
-
“I thought you were telling them we’re breaking up,” the villain points out indignantly, and the hero sighs tiredly.
“I tried, but you, of all people, made a good impression on them,” The hero’s gaze is locked out of the window as they drive, but it feels like they’d avoid the villain’s eye even if they weren’t on the road, “despite the fact I had to stop you from robbing them blind.”
“You knew who you were inviting in.”
“I told my mother that you’d embarrassed me and that I was leaving you,” the hero continues, pointedly ignoring their comment, “and she almost cried. You almost had my poor mother in tears because she liked you so much that the idea of us breaking up hurt her.”
“Your life isn’t meant to revolve around what your parents want,” the villain says tightly.
“It doesn’t. My so-called dating life that exists purely to sate them does, though.” The hero pulls over at the side of the road. “So we’re still doing this. Next time we see each other I’ll be decking you in the face or holding your hand or something gross. I really hope it’s the former.”
-
Much to the hero’s visible dismay, it is not the former.
“You’ve captured their hearts a little too much,” they tell the villain from their doorway. “It seems I’ve made a bit of a huge mistake doing this with you.”
“That’s what you get for trying to get me to do anything for you. Am I coming in or what?”
They step back to let the villain inside, catching a glimpse of the paper bundle in their hands. “What’s that?”
“Oh, these?” The villain holds up their gift—a bouquet of red, orange, and yellow flowers, their shades an exact match to those on the hero’s uniform. “Just a declaration of admiration to my beloved.”
“Oh, how thoughtful,” the hero snaps sarcastically. “Thank you.”
With a flick their bin opens, and the flowers are dumped head first inside. “My parents are constantly asking what you’re up to and why they don’t get to see any pictures of us.” The hero starts the trek to the living room, where they’ve already set up a realistic looking chess board, mid-game.
They pause when they find themself walking alone. They glance back to where the villain is still standing in the foyer, staring at the bin. “Did you hear anything I just said?”
“Huh?” is the answer they get, and they tut as the villain finally starts after them.
“You’ll need to come here once a week, and we’ll get some pictures to convince my parents that this is actually happening.”
The villain frowns. “What if I just left you in the shit? Didn’t come? Told your parents who you’re supposedly dating? Told them it was all fake?”
“Because I’m about to let you get away with a hell of a lot of crime if you don’t.”
The hero settles on the sofa, beckoning for the villain to sit with them. “Fine,” the villain spits a little harshly, “‘cause I’m not doing this for free.”

cw: mentions of suicide, greif and hauntings and a genral creepy vibe. i have just read gotham by midnight and i lost the crow try to be normal about citys 2022 challenge
THE CITY IS ALIVE AND THE CITY IS DEAD
AND IT HAUNTS US AND WE HAUNT IT ALL CONNECTED BY THREAD
AND PEOPLE ARE GOOD AND PEOPLE ARE BAD
AND WERE ALL GONNA DIE AND OF THAT WE ARE GLAD
BUT WE ALL ARE CURSED AND WE CAN NEVER GO BACK
BUT WE CAN NEVER LEAVE AND IT HAS STAINED OUR SOULS BLACK
AND IT FORGIVES US AND IT DAMNS US, AN ECHOING CALL
WE ARE FOREVER AND WE ARE NOTHING AT ALL
AND LOVE IS ALL AROUND US BUT SO IS HATE
CLIME IN YOUR COFFIN OUR YOUR GONNA BE LATE
AND WE LOVE IT EVEN THOUGH IT HURTS US
AND WE HURT IT BUT IT LOSES US THE SAME
AND MAYBE WE HURT BECAUSE WE WERE TAUGHT THAT LOVE IS PAIN
AND WE CARRY THE SINS OF OUR FATHERS AND THE CRIMES OF THOSE WHO BORE OUR NAME
AND WE ARE THE VIOLENT AND WE ARE THE WITNESS
AND WE ARE THE VICTIM AND WE ARE THE SICKNESS
BUT WE ARE NOT INNOCENT BECAUSE THAT DIED LONG AGO
AND HAUNTS EACH OF US , FILLS OUR HEARS WITH SORROW
AND WE ARE THE DAMNED AND WE ARE THE FLIES
CAUSE EVEN GOD DOESN'T DARE LOOK IN OUR EYES
AND YOU WANT HIM TO HATE YOU CAUSE APATHY'S WORSE
BUT YOUR ALL BEARERS OF THE GENERATIONS CURSE
AND YOU CAN RUN BUT YOU CANT HIDE
FROM THE PLACE THAT BIRTHED YOU WARPED ON THE INSIDE
AND AND YOU CAN RUN BUT YOU BETTER BE QUICK
CAUSE THIS CITY'S RUNNING WITH BLOOD AND ITS SLICK
AND YOU DON'T WANT TO SLIP AND YOU DON'T WANT TO FALL
CAUSE YOU'LL FIND YOURSELF BACK IN THE CURSED HALL
WHERE YOU BABES TIED THE ROPE AND SHARPENED THE KNIVES
CAUSE OUTSIDE IS PRETTY BUT SOMETHINGS INSIDE
AND YOU DIG IT OUT AND FIND A BROKEN HEART
AND YOU WANT TO PRETEND BUT YOU HAVE ALWAYS BEEN SMART
YOUR INNOCENCE SMASHED LIKE YOUR MOTHERS OLD JAR
THE DAY YOU WERE BORN UNDER THE CURSED STAR
THE STAR THAT SHINES AND THE STAR THAT BURNS
AND YOU HAVE ALWAYS NOTICED THE OLD PATTERNS
SO YOU RUN FAST AND SWIFT BEGGING TO GET OUT
BUT ONCE THE DOORS SHUT YOU BEGIN TO SHOUT
CAUSE YOU KNOW IN YOUR HEART YOU CAN NEVER GO BACK
AND THE CITY WILL HAUNT YOU, ITS NAME ON YOUR HEART
BUT THE WORDS STICK TO YOUR THROAT TRAPPED UNDER OLD SCARS
YOU LEFT BUT YOU LOVED IT AND THAT'S YOUR CURSE
AND THE CITY WONT LET YOU BACK UNLESS IN A HEARSE
YOUR ITS LOST CHILD, YOU BROKE YOUR MOTHER HEART
AND THE ONES OF THOSE AROUND YOU, RIGHT FROM THE START
AND YOUR THE SINNER, THE CURSED AND THE DAMNED
WITH YOUR BROKEN HEART, STAINING YOUR HANDS
YOU BEG FOR FORGIVENESS, BUT THE GODS TURNED AWAY THEIR EARS
YOU WILL CARY THIS ON YOUR BACK THROUGH MANY LONG YEARS
BUT ONCE YOU DIE, AND ROT IN THE GROUND
MAYBE A TRACE OF MERCY CAN BE FOUND
THEY SAY THOSE THAT TOOK THEIR OWN LIFE
WILL BE DAMNED TO HELL OF TORTURE AND STRIFE
BUT YOU WERE A BABE AND YOU WEREN'T TO KNOW
THAT THE THING INSIDE WASN'T MEANT TO SHOW
AND THE CITY SHE WEEPS FOR HER LOST CHILD
LOST AND BROKEN, WOUNDED AND WILD
AND THE CITY SHE MOURNS
BUT A REMINDER TO ALL, HER LOVE IS ENCASED WITH THORNS
SO BE CAREFUL MY CHILD, AND HIDE YOUR WIDE EYES
AND THE CREATURE INSIDE YOU, DON'T LET IT OUTSIDE
BETTER LOVED WITH PAIN THAN NEVER LOVE AT ALL
AND ITS SO SWEET, THE CITY'S THRALL
AND HER PEOPLE AND THEIR HOMELY DRAWL
SO DON'T BREAK YOU HEART, JUST GIVE IT TO HER
NEVER MIND SHES THE ONE THAT DECKED YOU IN FUR
AND YOU WERE CURSED TO WANDER, TO NEVER FIND REST
BUT STILL YOU TORE HER HEART FROM HER CHEST
SHE LOVED WHAT WOULD LEAVE
AND YOU LOVE WHAT YOU CAN GRIEVE
BOTH TRAPPED BY THE OTHER, A CURSE MOST FOUL
AND AT NIGHT YOU LET OUT A DESPERATE HOWL
FOR THE WILD THING MUST WANDER, AND THE MOTHER MUST GRIEVE
FOR THIS IS THE STORY THE FATES WILL WEAVE

I cannot stop thinking about how freakishly prepared vigs-era Tensei is, like, "let me bring multiple sets of backup communicators that are EMP resistant and link to my agency office to this fun party I'm going to, you know, just in case someone attacks and communications are cut and I need to be able to reach not just my team but other heroes there and call for outside aid, like getting a metric ton of steel cables delivered in minutes".
Does he do that at every party? Is he constantly carrying around a big bag or two of spare coms, support tech, first aid kits, and other emergency gear? What led him to decide to do that? And he's got to be networking like crazy to be getting some of these things, no wonder he's constantly getting new and varied people on his team to expand what plans they can throw together at any given moment.
But this also makes him splitting off from his group that he specifically organized to best combat Stain when he hears something weird truly stupid of him, like really just picked up the idiot ball there

#the void screams#duke thomas#bruce wayne#jason todd#stephanie brown#each member of the batfam having a complicated relationship with gotham is something that can be so personal-#but yeah bruce loves gotham because this is where his family has always lived. leaving would mean leaving them behind.#he loves gotham because it's the only home he's ever known#i don't know what fucked up tether there is between gotham and jason. compells me though.#even when he leaves he can't stay away along. gotham's in his head. in his soul. it's where he's alive and it's where his life is drained#the people of gotham are duke's family and he wants to protect them the way they've always tried to protect him#the city is the people and duke knows these people. he's one of them. he's seen what they go through to survive because#he goes through it too. he loves gotham because it's his whole world. his family. and he'll protect that family#until he dies.#steph though? steph grew up here and hated it. hated the city. resented the people. resented the heroes.#and still every fibre of her being goes into loving this city. into hoping for it.#on purpose. she's going to love this city on purpose. even when it hurts. even when she'd rather die.#even when the whole CITY turns against her. time and again. because she's already decided.#she's going to love gotham. even if gotham never loves her back.#don't mind me i am just rambling nonsensically. i am right though by the way. it doesn't make sense but it's Correct

gotham's commitment to the "there are no good people in gotham" or "no heroes in gotham" narrative and that it's something that only law enforcement and the villains say and when you look at the regular citizens, the show constantly demonstrates that it is not and never has been true and they might not be successful and usually die in the process of trying to do the right thing but they still do it regardless.
it's also why, when you look at season 5, it's not the heroes or the villains who save the day, who stop bane and prevent the destruction of the entire city, it's the regular, every day citizens. if they didn't show up, gotham literally would've burned.
