Taking a hit for them in battle
Characters: Luffy, Zoro, Sanji cw: blood, war, angst
You didn’t have foresight, not even close. But when the hair on your neck stood up, you glanced around the battlefield for him, and you saw it. A marine had managed to sneak up on him, and the blade would undoubtably connect. You could tell that, with luck, it would be fatal. And so your body moved before you even had time to think, and as you felt the blade connect with your skin instead of his, a cry of pain and relief escaped from your mouth.
Tumblr media
Luffy
“GET OUT OF MY WAYYYYYY!” He whipped his arm around, taking down 20 marines in one swoop. “Second GEA-"
A cry from behind him made his blood run cold. He turned around slowly to see you on your knees, clutching your bloodied arm. “Y/N…why did you…”
Then, as he saw the marine raise his sword again, this time aimed for you, all of the dots connected and his horror turned to rage. You had protected him from his own careless mistake. He screamed out in anger, sending fist after fist into the marine’s body. He didnt stop until the Marine was a bloodied mess crumpled on the ground.
The battle raged on around you, but he sank down to his knees to meet your eyes. He could only focus on you now. He needed to make sure you were okay first. “Y/N…” Concern was riddled all over his face.
“It’s fine, Lu. It’s better than you being killed.”
His fingers hovered over the wound, his eyes starting to water. “I can see bone.”
“Luffy. It’s fine. I’m fine. Everything is okay. We’ll get Chopper to fix it later, okay?”
Luffy rubs furiously at his eyes and nods. "Just stay put for a sec, I can handle these guys." He says, standing to his feet. Dozens of marines were already closing in on you.
He takes his straw hat off and gingerly places it on your head. “Hey Y/N?” He flashes his billion berry bounty smile. “Thanks for saving me! Don't do that again though, okay?”
Tumblr media
Zoro
“Fuck!” How had he missed an attack so obvious? It was a dirty trick, one he should've anticipated. He had even noticed the attack before it struck, but had no way to deflect it. It would’ve been the first slice that had hit his back, but the blow never came. Instead, as he turned around, he saw you, crumpled to the ground, red staining the soil around you.
“Dammit woman! What were you THINKING!” He readjusts his swords and cuts down the wall of marines that had crept up on him.
“Scars on the back are…” you struggle to speak in a normal tone through the pain. “They’re a swordman’s shame, right?” You smirk up at him, which causes him to clench his jaw in frustration. Marines were now surrounding you two on all sides.
“Just stay down for a second, okay?” You nod and lay back, scanning the clouds for any funny animals or shapes. You should care about the battle, you should try to get up and fight. But you can’t bring yourself to do anything more than look at the sky. Zoro can handle the marines, you've never doubted his skill in fighting before. He'll keep you safe from here on out, you're certain.
Zoro's face reappears above you after a few seconds. “Still with me?” His voice is strained, his face scrunched with concern. His eyes dart between your eyes and your wound, unsure which to focus on. You grin back at him in response, too tired to respond with words.
“Just stay with me okay?” He pulls his shirt off and begins tying it around your wounded arm. “God, there’s so much…just stay with me.”
He picks you up as gently as he can and starts running. You can hear him screaming for a medic, and even though this is a battlefield, you can’t help but feel safe and secure now that you are back in his arms. You lean into him, trying to get comfortable.
“Are you cuddling into me as you’re bleeding out?!?”
“You’re warm.” Your simple answer makes him feel a little more at ease. At least you were speaking now, and responding normally.
“You’re insufferable!” He retorts, which makes you laugh softly.
Tumblr media
Sanji
He struggled to keep his footing while his eyesight slowly came back into focus. A surprise attack had left his vision blurry an his ears ringing. As he looked around the blurry battlefield, one thing came into focus. You. Right below him. Lying on the ground. Clutching at your side, which is slowly becoming crimson-colored. “Y/N-swan…”
Sanji lets out a guttural roar as he unleashes a fury of kicks against the Marines closest to you “STAY BACK!” He warns. “NOBODY TOUCHES HER!”
He positions himself over top of you, so nobody can ambush him again. He was supposed to be the one taking hits for you, not the other way around. Shame and rage fill his soul. Any time a marine comes close, he kicks them down in an instant. Getting revenge and keeping you from further harm was his only mission now.
Seeing a break in the waves of marines rushing towards you, he scoops you up and begins to skywalk away from danger. There’s always time for vengeance, but he isn’t sure how critical your injury is.
“I’ve never seen a battle from this view,” you murmur, trying to act as casual as possible.
“My dear! You’re still awake! You’re still-" he can’t bring himself to finish the rest of the sentence.
It hurts to laugh, but you can’t help it. “Did you think I would die that easily?”
He showers you in kisses as he takes you to safety. “Please, my dear, never do that again. I would rather die than see you ever get harmed even the slightest bit.”

i have a request for a luffy drabble!! i think he should be making a list/writing a love letter to you specifically :) what would he say?? 🫠💕
details ➸ tags: nothin but fluff! self-indulgent, teehee. // wc 0.7k
a/n ➸ this request is so cute! i'm melting. ty kitty for asking the real questions here.
Tumblr media
Hey. Don’t throw this away, okay? This is important.
Read this now.
Duh, Usopp says. Of course you’re reading this right now. He says he’s a very reputable source in the affairs of love—just look at him and Kaya. I dunno what that all means, but I guess he knows what he’s talking about.
Usopp says I should just tell you how I feel. I do that everyday, but he says maybe writing it down would be helpful. You're the one with the fancy words, not me, but I'll give it a try.
So! Finish reading this.
And then read it again when you start to think too much about things that don’t matter. Don’t pretend you don’t do that. I know you, and there’s no point lying to a sheet of paper. So when you go quiet like you sometimes do, and your thoughts start to hurt you, follow my instructions and read this. Then come find me and ask for a hug. ‘Kay? Captain’s orders.
HERE’S SEVEN THINGS I LIKE ABOUT YOU! YES, YOU.
1. Your smile!
Sanji could probably go on and on about how you’re gorgeous, stunning, beautiful—all those words—when you smile. And all those things are true! But you’re also the most… you. When you smile.
You have different kinds of smiles: big ones! Small ones! Encouraging ones! Those smiles that mean you know something I don’t, and you can’t keep it in much longer.
But what I like best about your smiles is when they’re just for me. It feels a bit like a secret. And I don’t like keeping secrets, but I don’t mind those secret smiles you share with me.
2. Your laugh!
Your laugh is so… What’s the word? Contagious. That’s it. You are contagious. Just like your laugh. I like it when you bite your lip to try to hold it in, and when it bursts out anyway. I don’t know why you try. Nothing in the world sounds better than your hyena cackle, trust me. You’d give evil witches a run for their money.
You like to look at me whenever you laugh, I’ve noticed. Like you wanna know if I find it funny too. I don’t think you even mean to do it. You just do. But that’s okay. I’m usually already looking at you.
3. You’re easy to pick up!
If I’m not supposed to throw you over my shoulder and run, why do you make it so easy?
4. You’re expressive!
You like to think you’re so mysterious. Too bad! You’re wrong. I know those books you like to read aren’t “intellectual” like you say they are. Pretty sure they wouldn’t make you squeal and cover your face with your hands if they were. I wish you wouldn’t cover it. I like the faces you make when you’re nervous.
You’re probably nervous right now, aren’t you? You’re so easy to rile up! I like that about you, too. You get sort of mad, sort of not when I point it out. Your eyebrows scrunch and your mouth curves up and you cross your arms, all firm. I never know if you wanna kiss me or hit me. It’s cute. And fun. But wow, do you get a potty mouth when you're really nervous. Your words turn sharp and so does your stare, like you wanna cut me open with your eyes. Like it’s my fault that you’re stuttering out a quick, “Shut the fuck up.” Yeesh. You almost hurt my feelings there!
Just kidding.
5. You’re loud!
Even when you’re quiet. Especially when you’re not.
I like your voice. I like how it sounds when you just wake up. I like it when you finally sing the song you’ve been humming all day. I like it when you organize your thoughts out loud, and when you tell me about a joke Franky made earlier, and when you get real close and whisper things only meant for me to hear.
Sometimes, when I think, it’s your voice I’m thinking in. I like that, too.
So be even louder for me. Okay? ‘Cause everything you say is special, and I wanna hear it all.
6. You’re patient!
And kind. And smart and funny and mine.
7. You’re everything.
I like you ‘cause I like you. Isn’t it obvious? It’s not like I try to hide it.
So don’t hide from me.

LSL Week Day 2: Gear 5
Sanji remembers waking up during the raid of Onigashima to Luffy awakening his fruit. To the Sun God Nika inhabiting his captain’s body. The sheer warmth and freedom in the haki surrounding Sanji like calm days when the Baratie was closed for repairs when he was smaller. He feels the utter pride when Kaido goes down and then the relief and thankfulness. Then Luffy falls asleep.
For a week.
Sanji is there when his captain awakes. With food and water and juice because Chopper isn’t going to let him drink yet. He helps Luffy sit up enough to eat while Law and Chopper look him over. Doing an in depth check up on the nineteen year old who died four times in one night, awakened his fruit, and then promptly slept a week.
The next time Sanji feels Gear 5 is on Vegapunk’s island when he’s fighting Lucci from Enies Lobby. It doesn’t take him out near as long as the first time did and he ends up using it later against Kizaru and Saint Jupiter. Sanji right next to him as the fight goes on for hours and once they’re safe on the Sunny and escaping Sanji plops himself down next to the galley door on deck and lights a cigarette. He’s exhausted as is everyone else but they’re safe, for now. As safe as they can be after what happened. The deck is relatively empty as almost everyone is exhausted from the battle. Sanji should be resting as well but food needs to be made and he wants to remember the warmth on his skin.
The warmth and joy and freedom he felt next to Luffy during their fight against the leaders of the world. It felt like standing on the deck of the Orbit shortly after fleeing Germa the first time. The thought that he could make it and live. Find the All Blue. The first time in a long time he had hope. That he would never long for anything again. He was wrong, of course.
He longed to stay in the bath of haki his captain had for forever.
Which wasn’t right, really. Tying Luffy down like that when he was freedom embodied. Sanji was just tired, he supposed. Just as Sanji lit his second cigarette a mop of black hair appeared in his eyeline and a hefty weight on his legs.
“I can’t cook if you’re on me, shitty god.” Sanji said as he looked at Luffy.
“You can make me something in a few minutes.” Luffy responded as he instead tucked his head under Sanji’s chin and wrapped his arms around him.
“What’s wrong?” Sanji asked as he wrapped his left arm loosely around Luffy.
“You feel weird.” Luffy answered. Sanji hummed as he smoked his cigarette and looked at the snow and the clouds. “What’s wrong?” Luffy asked as he burrowed deeper into the cook.
“Nothing’s wrong, I was just thinking.” Sanji answered.
“You think too much.” Luffy grumbled.
“Well some of us have too.” Sanji shot back as he took a hefty drag of his cigarette.
“You’re bad at it though, you get stuck on dumb stuff that doesn’t matter.” Luffy said and Sanji laughed.
“You don’t even know what I was thinking about.” Sanji laughed as Luffy pulled back enough to make eye contact.
“So tell me.” Luffy ordered.
“I was thinking about how good it felt to be in your haki, when you’re in Gear 5.” Sanji complied.
“That wouldn’t make you feel weird. So what made you feel weird?” Luffy pushed.
“I don’t want to tie you down, that’d be unfair.” Sanji answered as he looked back up at the snow.
“You’d never tie me down, no one can make me do anything.” Luffy pointed out.
“That’s true,” Sanji acquiesced, “I guess the better way to put it is that I wouldn’t want to stop you from what you love.”
“You wouldn’t.” Luffy said confidently. “I love you too, and I know you love me so you wouldn’t hurt me.”
“I wouldn’t.” Sanji agreed, focused on the last part of what was said. Then black hair turned white as Luffy went Gear 5 and held Sanji’s face which made their eyes meet.
“Mine. My Sanji, my cook, if he wants my haki like this he can have it.” Luffy promised.
“I just need you.” Sanji promised back and Luffy tucked into him as he went back to normal, his haki shined just as bright and warm. “Just like this you’re perfect.” Sanji said as he held his captain.

Luffys waits not so patiently as sanji cooks lunch #3. Clenching his teeth and licking his lips. So desperately hungry. Y/n watches from their chair as he glares at the pan his soon to be lunch is in. They can't help but giggle seeing him so riled up.
Sanji finally serves Luffy his lunch but with in seconds the large meal is gone. "More please!" he says rubbing his belly. Sanji sighs and picks up the plates. "You're appetite is getting harder and harder to keep up with Luffy!" he chuckles.
Y/n stands up from their chair to help pick up the remaining plates. They watch as sanji clenches his teeth and rubs his head. "Are you alright Sanji? You look a little pale!" they say giving him a concerned look.
He sighs and puts the plates on the counter. "I'm not sure....My heads pounding!" he groans, closing his eyes and rubbing his forehead once again. "Why don't you go see chopper? Luffy can wait for lunch #4!" y/n says putting the rest of the plates down.
They start to push him towards the kitchen door. "Alright alright. I'll be back in 30 at the most!" he grumbles walking out of the kitchen.
Within a few seconds Luffy starts to groan. "I'm hungryyyyyyy. How much longer till 30 minutes is overrrrr??"
Y/n shakes their head and chuckles. "Well seeing as he just walked out the door id say it's gonna be a while!" They make their way towards the kitchen. Thinking about washing the dishes to help sanji. "Meatttt. I need meat!..." Luffy groans slamming his face on the table.
Y/n sighs. "Give me a moment and I'll see what I can fix up for you alright?" she smiles, putting the plates in the sink. Luffy perks up immediately. "Really! Alright!"
Y/n thinks about what to make. It needs to be something quick and easy yet filling... They ponder for a moment before coming to a idea. Beignets!
They quickly get out the ingredients to make their dough before getting out a large pot and filling it with oil. While the oil heats up they start to make their dough.
After frying the dough they fill the inside with chocolate sauce and sprinkle powdered sugar over the top. They look proudly at their beautiful dish.
"Ok Luffy close your eyes!" they say excitedly. Luffy obeys and shuts his eyes. Holding his fork and knife in his hand with a huge smile on his face. Y/n places the plate in front of him. "Ok open!"
Luffy opens his eyes and looks down. His mouth drops open, eyes going wide. "You made this y/n!?" he says smiling. They nod and watch as he picks up one taking a big bite.
Luffy feels like his body is melting. He has never ate something so delishes in his life. As he eats his food he keeps trying to talk with his mouth full. Y/n laughs as they watch him get powdered sugar all over his face.
The door suddenly opens to reveal sanji. "Sanji! How's your head?" y/n asks relieved to see he's ok. "Chopper gave me some medicine and said it was allergies! I'm feeling way better- wait. Did you make beignets? I never knew you cooked!" he says surprised.
"Yeah I did! Luffy was hungry so I decided to make something while you were gone! I'll clean up the kitchen though don't worry!" they say putting another plate of food down for Luffy.
"No that's alright! They smell wonderful! You'll have to teach me the recipe sometime!" he exclaims reaching for one off luffys plate.
Luffy quickly moves the plate. "Y/n made them for me so they are mine!" he mumbles. His mouth still full of food. Sanji grumbles "With the amount I cook for you, you could at least let me have one you jerk!"
Sanji continues to try and grab the plate but no matter where he went Luffy stretches his arms away until he eats the last one. Y/n laughs. "I'll make some more later so you and the crew can try some! But right now we need to sweep the floor cause y'all got powdered sugar every where slinging the plate around!" they laugh looking at the two men now covered in sugar.

You would be laying down on your private bed, staring up listlessly at the ceiling.
Burnt out, stressed, anxious, it was all happening at once, and it wasn't the best of feelings. Being a part of this crew always came with danger and near-death experiences and you were very very tired.
Hearing the door open abruptly, you turn to see Luffy with a big grin on his face and a plate of food. Some things never change.
"Hey! Whatcha doing in here? Everybody is on deck having a feast! Come on!"
"Not now Luffy."
"Awh come on, come on, come on! We're all having fun!"
"Luffy!" you would snap at him "Not. Now. Please, just leave me alone."
He would want to talk back in his defense, annoyed that you were annoyed.
but before he got any words out of his mouth, he noticed the exhausted look on your face, how much you were pinching your eyebrows, and just generally distressed.
Setting down his plate of food, Luffy would crouch down, clinging to your bed. "(y/n)--What's wrong?" he would whisper.
You were surprised that Luffy, the ever-energetic luffy, was being gentle.
Rolling over to face him, you answer, "Everything. Nothing. I'm tired of being constantly scared that I am going to die tomorrow, hell, or even today. I love this crew with all my heart, but sometimes everything can be a bit too much."
The expression on Luffy's face says that he doesn't understand your concerns. It would make sense, Luffy lives for the chaos of the pirate life.
But what he does understand is that you needed some comfort.
Without a word, Luffy stands and took his shoes off, then motions for you to move over to give him some room on the bed.
You do as he says and you watch as he lays next to you and wraps his arms around your midsection.
"What're you doing?"
"I am helping! Is it helping?"
You think to yourself for a moment, the sound of his heartbeat against your ear was loud, but it made you feel warm, grounded.
"Yeah, yeah it is." You whisper to him, nuzzling your face into his chest. He smelt of ocean air. You heard him laugh softly before nuzzling his face into your hair.
"That's great!"
You could cry; your captain was so kind to you, so attentive and loving. "Thank you, Luffy," you sobbed out, holding onto him tightly. For once, he didn't say anything, but let you cry into his chest for however long you needed to.

“The weeds!! The weeds Luffy!! Not the flowers!” (Y/n) shouted as she leaned out the kitchen window. Even then Luffy still began to yank out the barely budding roses. For as much as he wanted to do the garden, Luffy sucks at it. (Y/n) eyes trailed over to the small pile of weeds and roses, where Luffy continued to toss the roses in. Let out a heavy sigh, (Y/n) called out to him again, “Luffy! Not the roses!”
“Huh?” Luffy hummed as he looked up and around before finally making eye contact with (Y/n). She scoffed at her absent-minded brother-in-law as she stated again,
“Your weeding the weeds, not the roses.”
“Eh? But they all look the same?” Luffy hummed as he looked back to the pile of weeds and roses then back to the rosebuds in his hands.
“See the little green ball on top of that the stem, those are roses that have yet to bloom. Those need to stay in the ground so they can bloom, what your getting is the other green plants.” (Y/n) explained as she pointed down the weeds that surrounded the roses. Luffy’s eyes followed as he began to finally see the difference between the 2. And with a chuckle, Luffy had gone back to work pulling out only the weeds this time. (Y/n) scoffed once again as she leaned back from the window and turned around on her heel and looked back at her blonde brother-in-law. She was so grateful for Sabo and Luffy. They sat through everything with her and supported her throughout it too.  Keeping her safe and healthy when she found out about Ace’s death, being there to help her through her pregnancy even sitting with her through her labor, and even now they still come and visit her regularly, checking up on her and her family. The trio of brothers are the best people she has ever met. Brightening her smile, she shook her head and began to walk past them.
“Ya’know for as much as Luffy wanted to do the garden, you’d think he’s at least how to do it.” (Y/n) sighed as she made her way next to Sabo at the table. She had taken a spot right next to him and picked up the pair of pants she was stitching back together. Sabo continued to shuffle through some paper as he glanced over at (Y/n) and chuckled.
“Well, you pretty much banned him from doing anything else. The garden is the only thing Luffy can do now.” Sabo pointed out, taking the pile of papers in his hands and setting them to the side, then began working on the other pile.
“...It’s his fault for being so reckless. If he’s your brother you should’ve raised him better.” (Y/n) huffed, cutting the string off the pants and tying them up. (Y/n) was currently fixing a pair of Estelle’s pants that were destroyed when he and Luffy were playing. It wouldn’t be a big of a problem if it wasn’t one of Estelle’s good pants. It was one of the best days Estelle had though, so it was easy for (Y/n) not to get too mad.
“Ace was the one who was the closest to him. I lost my memories although that time.” Sabo answered, as his gaze shifted down to the paperwork
“Looks like Imma have to call Ace out on that then-”
“Mama!!” A loud voice had shouted as the door to the small house swung open and a small (h/c) colored child had rushed in. (Y/n) was quick to drop the pants and open her arms to greet home her child.
“Estelle! Welcome back, baby.” (Y/n) smiled brightly as she gave a huge hug to her child. Estelle giggled and happily hugged back. Estelle wasn’t gone for long, only about 3 hours but it was easy to tell that he missed his mom. He definitely takes after his dad, being a very family-orientated person. Standing up from her chair, she pulled away from Estelle yet keeping him on her hip, she smiled, “We’re you nice to Doctor Cherry?”
“Yeah, she even gave me a candy.” Estelle proudly shouted as he stuck out his tongue and showed (Y/n) its blue color.
“Wow, You must’ve been such a good boy. I bet Dcotor Cherry was happy to spend the day with you.” (Y/n) smiled, as she set Estelle back on the floor and looked up at the red-haired lady that stood at the door.
“Of course, Estelle’s one of my best patients.” Cherry smiled as she looked down at Estelle. Estelle giggled loudly as grinned up from his mother's side. Cherry was another person who stood by (Y/n) when she was going through such a hard time, helping (Y/n) nurse back to health and helped a lot with the pregnancy. She was another that was close like family. As Cherry took a step into the house, she had opened her mouth to speak again but Sabo and Luffy were quick to interrupt.
“You’re not even gonna say hi to your uncles. Estelle, you make us so sad.” Sabo teased as he and Luffy walked up to join (Y/n). Quickly turning around to the sound of the voices, Estelle smiled brightly again.
“Uncle Sabo, Uncle Luffy!!” Estelle shouted as he jumped into their arms. The boys were quick to hug back and spoil Estelle in all types of affections. (Y/n) smiled at the view, that's one of the many things that she wants Estelle to learn that no matter what family is always important. With Estelle already being a very family-oriented person, it seemed that (Y/n) didn’t have much of a lesson to teach. Giggling to herself, (Y/n) turned back to Cherry to see what she was gonna say early. Once Cherry had seen that (Y/n) was back on her, she began again,
“Someone was asking around for you early today. I’m not sure who, but he seemed almost desperate.” Cherry explained as she watched (Y/n) face twist into shock and just for a moment, there was a huge flash of hope in her eyes that seemed to cloud her judgment for a moment. It was for a brief moment, but even with that flash of hope Cherry could tell that (Y/n) wants, more like needs, to see who it is.
“Asking for (Y/- Ow!!” Sabo hisses as he quickly pulled his arm towards him and began to rub the red spot that Estelle pinched, “He’s still in his pinching phase? I thought we were over that.”
“With Estelle? Of course not, he still goes around pinching everything and everyone. I’ve been trying to get him to stop but he doesn’t want to. I’m surprised that you thought he grew ou-”
“Ow, ow, ow, ow!! My nipples!!” Luffy cried as he pushed Estelle away from him. With the pain still written over his face, Luffy cupped his nipples and hissed. (Y/n) laughed as she watched Luffy sit there trying to soothe the pain running through him.
“Yeah no, he’s still pinching.” (Y/n) laughed before her, and Sabo, both turned back to Cherry and continued to question her.
“Who’s looking for (Y/n)?” Sabo questioned. It was easy to tell that his overprotectiveness was kicking him. The only response that Sabo got from Cherry was a shrug and then slowly walking out of the house as if to lead the others. Sabo then turned to look at (Y/n) asking the same question to which (Y/n) only ended up shrugging too.
“I’m not sure. Sail with Ace and Whitebeard-san I’ve met a lot of people, so I don’t know.”
Sabo hummed in response as he began to follow Cherry outside. Something inside of (Y/n) made her so anxious, but something has her heart racing, palms sweating, and her legs aching. Something about this guest just had her body aching, as if she couldn’t sit still. In the back of her mind, a small voice continued to echo, but there was no way it could be true. He’s dead, he passed away 2 years ago. Last time (Y/n) you can’t raise the dead either. So with one last shaky sigh, (Y/n) began to make her way out the door and towards Sabo and Cherry. Trying to push back her feelings, it’s like this every time, always getting her hopes up only for them to come crashing down. She tries to keep her cool.
“So, does it look like anyone we know?” (Y/n) questioned, as she took a spot next to Sabo’s side. Sabo let out a small grunt as he squinted his eyes to see the figure. (Y/n) had followed suit. Just at the bottom of the hill stood a man with broad shoulders. He looked around confused as he stumbled around the bottom of the hill. A soft laugh left her lips as she watched him, he looks so out of place.
“I-I-I….I don’t wanna jump to conclusions here, (Y/n), but doesn’t that look like-“
It didn’t take long for the man to make eye contact with the 2 at the top of the hill. He starred for a moment as if he was taking in the view before he smiles brightly and slowly began to make his way up. As if the world has stopped around (Y/n). That smile. That was the same smile that started this whole adventure, that made her happy even on the saddest days, that was the same smile that she fell in love with.  It was hard to believe. As if time itself has stopped, (Y/n) stood there speechless. She couldn’t even muster a sound or a reaction. Something like this never happens, maybe one in a million but last time she checked the skeleton on Luffy’s crew was the one. This was impossible, it had to be a prank or something. This couldn’t be happening and just as (Y/n) had open her mouth and rat at the person standing below them a laugh echoed through the field. It was real, this is all real. That laugh was one she couldn’t and wouldn’t forget. That laugh belongs to her later lover,
“Ace.” Breathlessly and barely above a whisper was all she could do. She was scared if she said it any loud she would have started to cry right there. (Y/n) began to inch forwards slowly trying to wake her body up and tell it to move. God, if only she could wake it up faster. Soon enough those baby steps turn into bigger ones then fast ones, then finally she was running. She was running as fast as her feet could carry her down the hill. Tears swiftly fell from her eyes as she made her way to her lover. Maybe dreams do come true. After all these days, weeks, months of wishing, her wish came true. And even now it’s better than what she wished for.
Not being able to stop herself and not even trying to, (Y/n) jumped straight into Ace’s warm embrace for the first time in years. Automatically (Y/n) inhales deeply taking in Ace’s smell of burnt ambers and sunk deeper into his strong and warm embrace. By now she couldn’t help the waterworks from coming. Neither could Ace, the 2 of them held each other close, taking in each other scent and loving embrace. As if this moment latest forever, the 2 of them didn’t let go for as long as they could. However, (Y/n) can only cry so much into his shoulder before taking a deep breath. So barely pulling away and with a red-eyed and snot-filled face, (Y/n) smiled as she tried to speak up the loudest and clearest she could.
“Y-y-y-your… you’re alive!! Ace is alive. Your alive!!” (Y/n) cried as she tried to call out to the others however your attention was all on Ace. She was scared that if she looked away he would disappear, so she kept her around him and locked her eyes with his.
“I’m alive. I’m really alive.” Ace sobbed back keeping his eyes locked with (Y/n)’s. She didn’t even care if his voice has reached them, she doesn’t want it to reach them. All she wants is to be with Ace now. Smiling through her tears, she pulled her hand up to Ace’s cheeks and began to rub her thumb against his freckled cheeks feeling his rough skin against hers. Ace, still through his tears, smiled and hummed as he leads into her hand, enjoying the softness and warmth her hands had provided. This moment should last forever, they both wished. Just as (Y/n) has dropped her hand to his chest and was able to lean in to kiss his lips that she wanted to feel and taste once again, 2 pairs of very loud footsteps came behind them. Before the 2 of them could even react, 2 bodies came crashing down onto them.
“Ace!!” The 2 of them sobbed as all of the 4 bodies fell over in the grass. Both Luffy’s and Sabo’s sobs could be heard for miles, like (Y/n) and Ace, they couldn’t hold back their tears. So all 4 of them laid on the ground and just sobbed, they couldn’t do anything else. Each one of them held onto the other with such an iron grip, it was hard to breathe but nobody wanted to move. The only time they moved was when Ace pulled back and started at Sabo for a while trying to figure out who it was.
“S-s...sabo. Y-you’re alive too?!!” Ace gasped as he could feel more tears falling. Sabo looked up and smile at him, nodding. And Just with that simple nod both of the boys began to cry even harder and the hug got tighter. This whole hug was a mess, they were all crying loudly. People in the village soon came to even check on them but none of them cared. After 2 years each of their dreams had come true and nothing else mattered.
“Welcome home, Ace.”
~~
“Luffy don’t-!” (Y/n) tried to protest all she wanted, but as soon as she had put down the food, Luffy was all over it. And taking after his uncle, Estelle was right there digging into the food with Luffy. Let a heavy sigh past her lips as she walked back into the kitchen to get the rest of the food.
“Oi! Luffy save some for us!!” Ace’s voice rang through the house as a loud thump followed along with Luffy groaning in pain. Like music to her ears, hearing Ace’s voice once again causes (Y/n) so much happiness and relief. Having her black-haired lover back is the best feeling in the world.
After all 4 of them had somehow managed to stop the tears, they didn’t spend a moment from each other. Where ever one went the others always followed because they were all scared that if they left then Ace would disappear. Although, out of the whole reunion, being able to reunite Estelle with his father was the best part. Luckily he’s only 2 so things weren’t awkward and he was able to quickly adapt to Ace. Being again to finally introduce Ace to his son and Estelle to his father was by far the best part. It only made (Y/n) cry even more.
“Hey, Daddy you can’t hit Uncle Luffy. Mama will get mad at you.” Estelle laughed as he waved around the bone. Even the word was foreign to Ace, it still took him a while to get used to even being a dad. But after staring at Estelle for a moment, just taking in the fact that Estelle’s actually his kid. Ace chuckled and smiled.
“Oh, will she now? Last time I check, I think I can handle your mother when she’s angry.” Ace chuckled as he leads back in his chair and crossed his arms. She could cry just looking at him. After all these years he hasn’t changed a bit. Messy black hair, freckled skin, a huge smile that could light up the room. The only thing that had changed, was the giant burn mark on his stomach. It was huge and very upsetting but it’s not like Ace didn’t have scars from before. With one last shaky breath, (Y/n) pushed back any sadness she had and quickly replaced it with joy. There is no way (Y/n) was gonna be sad.
“You better think again fire boy.” (Y/n) had stated as she hit the back of his head while she took a seat next to him at the table. Ace hissed at the pain while Estelle laughed in response. Sabo and Luffy were quick to follow in suit. All their laughter sounded like music to her ear. There really wasn’t anything else she could wish for. Ace was back, she’s having dinner with her family, and she was happy. It was all too perfect, it was almost like this whole thing was a dream. God, (Y/n) was terrified that it was all just a dream. The thought of having them go back to a time where Ace was gone and that-
“Ouch.” (Y/n) hissed as she grabbed her arm. Looking over next to her, she saw Estelle gigging up at her. Estelle and his pinches are gonna be the death of her.
“You so deserve that for early. Good job, Estelle, you’re learning quickly.” Ace laughed out loud as he looked over at his son. Estelle smiled bright and laughed along with him. (Y/n) couldn’t even be mad, but she wasn’t about to let Ace get away with it.
“Oh, you watch it, because last time I checked Estelle was still a mommy’s boy just like his father.”

I Was Made for Lovin’ You
Disclaimer: One Piece (and its characters) belongs to Eiichiro Oda-sensei.
Reminder: I have no beta-reader. Any grammatical and spelling errors are solely mine.
Warning: OOC possible. One shot.
Rating: M (Not really explicit but mature-themed, yes)
Note: For the Day 1 of the ZoNa Days event (at @zonamievents). It’s Zoro day… what better way to celebrate it with Nami pondering about him.
I Was Made for Lovin’ You is by KISS. I had The Umbrella playlist accompany me while writing and l’m borrowing it. Enjoy!
Summary: She can’t say she’s not amused when that supposedly innocent piece of clothing article was now not-so-innocent at all.
Nami jolted slightly, waking up from her still-not-deep slumber. She blinked a few times to clear her thoughts as well as the sleep still lingering behind her eyes.
She blearily looked around her surroundings and realized she had fallen asleep on her deck chair while relaxing with Robin on the Sunny’s lawn.
She was just talking to the archaeologist earlier right?
The navigator tilted her head to her left. The deck chair beside her was empty. She must’ve have fallen asleep in between the lulls in their conversation.
With a sigh she settled back comfortably on her chair again. She was still feeling heavy-eyed and the call of sleep was still beckoning to her.
Must be because she didn’t get any proper shut-eye last night. No thanks to a certain green-haired swordsman.
Not that she is complaining. She absolutely cannot whine about Zoro lavishing her attention—physically speaking.
But it was kinda hard to explain why she seemed to be lacking sleep once, twice sometimes thrice a week. Robin and Sanji were already noticing it and were asking questions.
Was that what she and Robin were talking about earlier before she had fallen asleep?
Another sigh escape her.
She couldn’t very well tell them that a late night tryst with their swordsman was the reason.
Hell will definitely break loose.
A commotion coming from the galley grabbed her attention. She can hear Sanji’s voice rising above a cacophony of other sounds. She strained her ears to listen if he was fighting with Zoro but he was just shouting at Luffy and whoever was with the gluttonous captain, pestering the him.
The door of the boys’ quarters opened and with a loud yawn out stepped Roronoa Zoro.
Did he just woke up?
Nami frowned.
Well… she hadn’t seen him since they went their separate ways this morning. That probably meant he slept almost the whole day off!
Talk about unfair! How come he was able to get more rest than her!
Well… he hardly had any task in the ship after all.
That’s it he’s not getting any more all-nighters more than twice a week. She needs her beauty sleep after all.
He trudged across the deck, still looking half-asleep and oblivious to her and his surroundings.
She just continued watching him from her chair and her eyes zeroed in on the sash that he was still tying around his waist.
The one damn reason why she was lacking sleep today… aside from the crazy swordsman himself.
Nami pursed her lips and stifled a groan as she remembered how steamy the night before was.
She had known long ago that Zoro was a domineering man. She shared that trait with him in all honesty. That’s one of the reasons why they clash so much.
And she got to experience first-hand just how much he can be when he wants too—especially during their private sessions.
Of course, it’s not like she doesn’t put up a good fight every now and then. Like he could really boss her around as easy as that whether inside the bedroom or out (well, in this case… the crow’s nest).
But damn, whatever has gotten into him last night and prompted him to bend her over and tie her hands on the metal plate rack in the nest using that red sash of his, took their sexual relationship into another level.
And seeing it again out displayed nonchalantly out in the open… was making her hot and breathless all over again just thinking about how he had skillfully used it to make her succumb to him.
She can’t say she’s not amused at all when that supposedly innocent piece of clothing article … was now not-so-innocent at all.
Now all she can remember whenever she sees it is how it had looked—tied around her wrists, keeping her hands together as if in prayer, unable to grasp anything to steady herself as Zoro mercilessly pounded her in so many positions she had fucking lost count as her brain short-circuited from too much pleasure.
Goddamn it. That was hot! Really, really, really hot.
And she should stop thinking about it right now. Not when he’s just a few feet away from her and can sense when she’s burning for him, the unmistakable heat pooling in her middle making her rub her feet together as if that would appease it.
How did he turn from an idiotic numbskull to a rather irresistible hunk who was so damn good in sex?
It’s just one of the many wonders of the sea they were sailing.
Stealing one last glance at that sash and the man who owns it, Nami decided it’s better to stay quiet and just let him go about with his business so she’d still have time to reminisce their sexual escapade last night while it’s still fresh in her mind.
Her eye caught the sun beginning to set down the horizon. It will be evening soon and they’ve been sailing without any trouble the whole day… she’ll talk to Franky later about anchoring the ship for the night.
Fingers snapping in front of her face made Nami jerked back slightly, startled at the sudden intrusion.
She blinked at Zoro, who was looking at her amusedly as he crouched down beside her deck chair so they were eye-level.
A pout appeared at her lips just as he asked.
“What are you thinking about?”
Nami’s eyes unconsciously darted from his face to that damned sash tied around his hips.
And a grin immediately appeared on Zoro’s face.
He leaned closer to her… so close that their noses were almost touching. His grey eye flickered all over her face, studying her. It was almost as if he would kiss here right there and then, in the lawn deck of their ship, for all their crewmates to see.
“You want a repeat of last night?” He asked and his grin widened some more at her reaction.
See? There was no way she can hide from him how she absolutely enjoyed their tryst yesterday.
“Come on Nami. I’ll tie you up again and fuck you good.” He whispered lowly on her ear.
Nami felt the heat crawl from where she can feel his hot breath against her skin.
“That’s really raunchy Zoro.”
He laughed at her attempt to call him out when they both know how it definitely turns her on.
Zoro captured one of her hands in his, his thumb rubbing over the soft skin of her wrist, studying the telltale marks left by his sash from their encounter last night.
Then his face broke into a smile. A sweet, rarely seen one, for her eyes only. “Maybe next time,” he murmured as he brought her wrist to his lips for a kiss.
And just like that Nami felt her insides exploded as she stared at him.
Now he’s not just an idiotic numbskull and an irresistible hunk. He’s also an endearing lover.
Remind her again how could she be this lucky?
“Damn it Zoro,” she hissed, grabbing the front of his shirt and pulling him to her for a heated kiss.
“Ah.” Zoro stopped her as a playful smirk graced his lips. “Not now when there are eyes everywhere.”
And with that he left in her deck chair with her mouth hanging open in disbelief.
Damn it all to hell! Did he just…?
She hastily vacated her chair to chase after him and give him a piece of her mind and a kick or two.
Idiotic numbskull, irresistible hunk, endearing lover…
She also forgot to add that he can be a teasing ass when he wants too.
The overall combination was too appealing and too hard to resist.
Or maybe she really is a sucker for him.
Her eyes settled again at that red sash as she hurried towards him. Zoro just reached the top of the stairs and was about to head to the galley.
A mischievous smirk pulled at the corners of her lips as she reached him.
Nami immediately hooked her fingers on that piece of clothing, stopping him in his tracks,   before pushing him against the galley’s wall.
She pressed herself on him as Zoro gazed down at her looking downright amused. She toyed with the sash, pulling at it slightly for emphasis.
“Let me borrow this later,” she murmured the request against his lips. Teasing. Seducing.  “I’ve got a favor to return in full tonight.”

Hello can I request being childhood sweetheart with Ace and seing each other all grown up please ?
Hi! Thank you for the requests! I did a bit of research into the childhood since I have not yet seen it! Again thank you for the request
Gender-neutral reader
It was a cold raining day along with the ship, the rain could be heard pitter-pattering on the desk. The crew had to stop on an island soon to pick up more supplies and soon they would be on an island. Ace was sitting out on the deck having the cold rain not bother him at all.
“ I wonder how (name) is doing?” He thinks to himself and remembers his childhood with him, Luffy, sabo, and you. He remembers your beautiful face and how much you made him smile.
He goes to continue to think but he hears that an island is up ahead.
“ One day I hope to see you again (name)” he smiles
After a while the crew gets onto the island and ace is chosen to help carry things back to the ship. Ace smiles and goes to find the supplies that are needed. But after a while, he spots a familiar face shocking him “ (name)!!” He yells and runs over to you.
“ Ace?!” You yell and immediately run and hug the boy tightly “ What are you doing here?!” You ask enjoyment filling your face
“ My ship is docked here but I didn’t think I would find you here! It’s been so long and you have grown up! Look at you!” He rubs your head to wish you blush
“ A-Ace!” You blush bright red and hug him more hiding your face into his chest
Ace laughs and looks at you “ Your blushing at this?? What happened to you being so bold being able to kiss my cheek”
You blush even redder and pull away mumbling incoherent words
“You're so cute! Just like you were back then! How about you follow me if your not busy and we can catch up! It’s been so long! Luffy gonna be so jealous if he finds out I saw you!”
You nod your head laughing a bit and follow the man as he picks up supplies for his crew
“ So your finally a pirate?” You ask the man to which he grins
“ Yup part of the white beard crew!” He says proudly
“ That’s so amazing Ace! I’ve yet to join a crew myself but one day I will! And when I do I-“ your stomach starts to rumble and you rub the back of your neck “ Sorry I haven't eaten at all day. I’ve been busy trying to find something warm to wear” you start to shiver and ace notices
Ace smirks “ Well why don’t I show you to my crew and we can get you something to eat! And I’ll keep you warm like I did when we were younger!”
You laugh bringing a smile and small blush to Ace’s face “ I’ll take you on that deal! Besides I want to talk with you as long as I can before you have to depart!”
You both talk as Ace brings you to the ship and greets you to his crew. After you both settle down Ace brings you some food as you sit on the ship slightly leaning against each other having Ace sense you were cold.
“ Your still cold (name?” Worry showed in his voice
“ Yeah, the rain is very cold and I don’t have a proper raincoat”
Ace smirks and picks you up outing you on his lap and hugs you “ Well allow me to be your furnace while we eat”
Your face turns bright red but you lean into Ace while eating your food. He was always so warm, physically and emotionally. He was always so kind to you and it made you wonder if you had feelings for him. You didn’t know but Ace had feelings for you and would think about you wishing he could tell you that he’s had a crush since they were children.
“ Hey (name)?” Ace asks looking at you while holding you closer
“ Yes, ace?” You ask the man as you blush and nuzzle closer to him
“ What would you do if I got you to join the pirate crew I’m a part of?” Ask looks at you being a bit nervous
“ I wouldn’t know what to do! I’d be so honored! I’ve wanted to be a pirate with you for so long! I still remember how we would talk about it when we were younger! It’s a dream of mine!”
He nods and gets up “ I’ll be right back (name)!” Ace gets up and goes to ask if you can join the crew
An hour goes by and you have finished your food. You were starting to get cold and worry. There was no chance they would let you join, you thought to yourself
Ace comes out and smiles “ oh (name)!” He stands you up and hugs you “ Guess who a new member of the crew!”
“ I’m a part of the crew!” You look at the man having a huge smile on your face
“ On one request!” Ace smirks
“ Anything!”
“ You will be my partner. I love you (name)”
You blush bright red and hug the man tightly “ YES ACE YES! I love you so much!”
You and ace hug to what seems to be a very long time laughing and smiling enjoying that you both could be Together part of the same pirate crew and that you both were now a couple
I hope you like it!! Sorry if it’s a bit OOC! Again ty for the request!

On Thatch & Marco - A One Piece Mermaid AU Text Headcanon/Story
So I’ve gotten quite a few asks regarding Marco and the Whitebeards, and while this isn’t a response to a specific ask, here’s a little story on them!
~~
It's only been a few weeks since they've left Dawn Island, and they're still in East Blue but they've somehow already more than doubled the number of brats on board. And while the Moby Dick is far from boring, Thatch has had more adventures in this short timespan than he's had in years, and he's thriving.
Sure, he still feels little twinges of guilt for basically ditching his duties, but he's growing, in ways that the stability of an established Yonko crew hadn't allowed, and he knows that he'll be a better, more useful man to Pops and the others by the time they've caught up in the New World. Honestly, he's wondering if he should suggest these kinds of experiences for all the commanders, and wonders how Pops would feel about that.
But it's on one of these days and brief moments of calm when Thatch is daydreaming about his family in the New World when he spots a blue seagull circling far above them. It's weirdly shiny, and Thatch immediately recognizes it as a species native to an island in Pops' territory, and one that is unusual all the way here in East Blue.
Which means only one thing: Marco's checking in.
A quiet whistle from Thatch is all it takes for the seagull to come spiraling down, and Thatch remembers to take a quick glance around deck to make sure Luffy hasn't spotted it; he's learned the hard way what it means for a bird to land on deck when the ever-hungry mermaid is feeling a bit peckish.
But the bird lands safely on the rail close to Thatch's arm. It's by no means nearly as brilliant a blue as Marco, but certainly more beautiful than most birds you can find out at sea. Thatch still remembers the first time he found Marco making friends with the things, remembers laughing hysterically and making all sorts of bird jokes as Marco, then still a teen, looked more and more like the constipated old man he eventually grows up to be.
Well, jokes aside, the birds are now incredibly useful, serving as Marco's personal messengers to their allies across the world. Which, huh, Thatch supposes that includes him now, which is kind of an odd feeling.
And while Thatch wants to feel flattered that Marco's checking up on his favorite Thatch, he also knows that Marco's checking up on their littlest little brother, and the little brother of that little brother (baby brother^2, Thatch and Marco had fondly dubbed her, when Ace first told them about her). Because while Thatch's definitely accompanying Ace and co for his own selfish reasons (and he also swears it's not just so he could encounter the love of his life, darling Luffy), he also knows that Marco and Pops had ulterior motives for letting Thatch go, beyond just allowing Thatch to stretch his legs.
When Ace had asked, uncharacteristically shy, if he could still be one of Whitebeard's sons without formally joining his crew, and when Whitebeard responded with an affirmative--Thatch wonders if Ace really understands what that meant. A good parent, a good father is definitely a foreign concept to him (and unfortunately for Luffy too, Thatch has found, and knows that Pops will adopt her the moment he meets her if he hasn't already). And the Whitebeard pirates don't take the bonds of family lightly.
So while yes, Thatch is here for his own adventures, he's also very aware of what he represents, both to his family and to the world. For his family, his presence on board maintains the connection between the Whitebeards and Ace. Ace is still so very new to their family, and while no one doubts his competence, he still has much to go in terms of learning to rely on them, on learning that the Whitebeard pirates will ALWAYS have his back. And well, East Blue is kinda far away, too far for a shout to be heard on the Moby. So Thatch is here acting as their representative, and he couldn't be more honored to have the role. He is, if nothing else, excellent at being a nagging older brother, and it's the role he's easily found himself fitting into here.
But the other reason is that Thatch is the Fourth Division Commander of the Whitebeards, and no one who knows anything about pirates would fail to recognize him, and the weight of his presence. He knows people won't immediately make the connection that this crew has already been adopted, or even what that means because it's not quite the same as ally, but Thatch's presence establishes an undeniable connection between them and one of the Four Emperors. Thatch knows that when he makes eye contact with the marines and they balk, it's not just him they see: it's the huge, looming shadow of Whitebeard himself. And until the world learns to see that shadow behind Ace, behind all of the ASL pirates, well, Thatch will stay right here.
The blue gull on the rail looks at Thatch expectantly, and Thatch lets it perch on his shoulder as he makes his way to the kitchen. Sanji glances up in surprise and squints at the bird, but doesn't say anything as he returns to preparing dessert for the ladies (it's a reminder that Thatch should be doing that too, or else the snot-nosed cook will one up him in earning the favor of Luffy, or at least her stomach). Thatch decides to make this quick, and grabs two cookies from the hidden cookie jar, as well as some parchment and a writing utensil.
Thatch knows Marco wants to know how they're doing, but well, the timing of the gull is awfully convenient, so he's taking advantage.
Dear Blue Chicken Sauteed in Pineapple Sauce, Thatch writes, taking advantage of the opportunity to write in "code," despite the lack of confidential information and low risk of one of Marco's blue gulls being stopped. He'll take every opportunity to tease, thank you.
The stove on this ship works great, and the fish is beautiful. Thatch's pen moves before he really thinks about what's coming out. She's stolen my heart, I think I want to marry her. Thatch pauses...huh, well, honestly he's not exaggerating, is he? He'll let Marco guess how serious he is. (he's suddenly uncomfortable because he's not sure how serious he is himself, but that's a thought for another time)
And now, the most important part of the letter: PS - I dropped my hair wax in the ocean. Can you send me an extra from my room?
Because, tragically, Thatch had--and now his beautiful pompadour is a sad mess that's tumbling down his shoulders. Thatch knows he could pick up another tub of hair wax on any of the islands they’ve stopped at, but he has standards, and he needs his special wax that he’s used for decades, which is unfortunately only found in the New World.
Which makes his current situation stuck in East Blue quite tragic, except it isn't quite as heart-breaking as Thatch had thought it'd be, once he realized how much Luffy likes playing with his loose locks, and the sheer number of times Thatch has been finding himself overboard recently would have made putting his hair up again after every time a pain--but well. It'd still be nice to have the familiar weight of his hair wax in his pocket again.
Thatch decides to omit the major change with himself since he last saw Marco that resulted in the hair wax being lost in the first place: the fact that he's eaten a devil fruit. Because that's a surprise. Thatch wants to see Marco's face when he realizes how badass Thatch has become, controlling Darkness of all things. (well, Thatch has to actually get good at it first, and stop almost drowning. It's coming along)
Thatch wraps one cookie in the letter, tying it into a neat parcel, and feeds the other to the bird as thanks for his services. The bird takes off as soon as Thatch opens the door.
Well, now Thatch has a lovely mermaid to feed, and a baby cook to outclass.
~~
Thatch sees the next blue gull a week later, damn those things are fast. It's carrying a parcel this time, and Thatch reaches out gleefully, because he doesn't remember the last time he's had his hair down for this long and he can't wait to have his signature hair style once more.
The bird doesn't stick around this time, and instead just drops the parcel into Thatch's hands before wheeling back the way it came.
And...huh. The parcel's not the right size, or weight to be Thatch's hair wax.
Thatch squints suspiciously, as Ace comes to stand by him, staring after the gull. "Marco?" he asks, and Thatch grunts, already feeling grumpy and just knowing he's not gonna be thrilled by whatever Marco sent.
He opens the parcel, and inside is a little blue bauble, wrapped in Marco's infuriatingly precise, fancy shmancy handwriting.
Dear Soggy Bread, congratulations on graduating from a baguette. May you evolve into a better bread next time. PS - The stone's for baby brother^2.
Ace ignores Thatch's enraged yowl and plucks up the stone--before cursing and dropping it. Thatch's reflexes manage to catch it before it hits the deck--and he immediately knows why Ace dropped it in the first place.
The stone immediately feels weird, not necessarily in a bad way, but in a way that distinctively reminds Thatch of the sea. He's familiar with what the stone is, but not how it feels, and is reminded once again of his relatively new status as a devil fruit user. At Ace's questioning (and wary) look, Thatch explains, as a good older brother should.
It's a special stone made on Fishman island. There's a piece of seastone at its core, and then it's wrapped in a mix of glass and crystal. It's a luxury trinket popular with a lot of young mermaids, because it's pretty, but also feels like the essence of the ocean is in it, which can be immensely comforting to most merfolk and fishmen.
While not the purpose, the glass and crystal casing also ensures that devil fruit users can touch it without feeling weakened, though they can still sense the sea from it, hence why it feels weird.
Thatch hates, hates to admit it, but it's a ridiculously thoughtful (and expensive) gift for a mermaid devil fruit user who can't enjoy the sea directly, damn Marco for thinking of it first! The bastard's definitely teasing Thatch by trying to woo his crush from half a world away. Marco hasn't even met her, this is just a game to him, but Thatch's serious, damnit!!!
Thatch wishes he could be petty enough to lie and say the bauble is a gift from Thatch, but he can't, because as much of an asshole as Marco can be, Thatch still loves him. Sigh.
Luffy chooses that moment to slide across the deck to them like a playful sea lion, slamming into Ace's legs and snaking up him in a split second to peer over his shoulder at whatever her brother's looking at in Thatch's hand. Ace isn't fazed and doesn't even twitch.
Thatch sighs dramatically. Adorable little brothers and their adorable little brother^2s, damnit.
Thatch dutifully presents the little stone to Luffy, as Ace warns her not to drop it, it's gonna feel a bit weird ok. Thatch lets Ace take over rattling off the information he'd just conveyed, doing his own duty as Older Brother, and is instead transfixed by the way Luffy's eyes widen in wonder as she rolls the shiny thing from one hand to the other.
While Luffy's not really the type for jewelry or trinkets, it's clear she's enthralled by the stone, the way she is with few inanimate objects other than food. Thatch belatedly notices that the stone's a brilliant crystal teal, with shards of gold obscuring the dark seastone center, the same color as someone's Zoan form. Bastard.
"Who's it from?" Luffy asks, and Thatch knows he's told her about his crew before, but she's unlikely to have remembered any names.
He may not lie about who the gift's from, but it doesn't mean he can't take revenge.
"A pineapple man who can turn into a burning chicken," he says with a straight face, ignoring Ace's frantic gestures to abort.
Thatch finds out why moments later, as Luffy's eyes widen impossibly more, and he belatedly realizes that to Luffy (and probably only Luffy), he'd just made Marco sound like the coolest person on earth.
Thatch meets Ace's furious eyes apologetically even as Luffy's COOOOOL!!!!!! rips across deck, and they both sigh.
They're not looking forward to Luffy meeting Marco

Midnight Baking Lesson
Sanji × Reader
Tags/TWs: Minor injury mention
~~~~~~~
It all started with the wrong decision on how to hold the knife. Your index finger had been perched atop the back of the blade as you roughly sliced the vanilla bean pods. You didn't know why, but it was somewhat impossible to get under control. You had tried to reposition the bean pod, and that was when your finger and the knife slipped.
You quietly nursed your cut finger with a damp washcloth, glaring at the herb in frustration. It was the middle of the night, you couldn't risk waking up your friends, especially Sanji. He was the one you were trying to make this for, after all.
A month ago, he had mentioned his birthday, and despite offers from the crew of having a party, he declined for some reason. It had only been about a year since you had been traveling with the band of wild pirates, but you had gotten to know them all pretty well, and you knew Sanji wouldn't pass up a celebration. You looked at the clock through the dim lighting of the moon, frowning. It was about 12:14 A.M., Sanji would be awake by sunrise. You had time, but if you kept slipping up like this that wouldn't count for much. You sighed, picking up a small bandage and tying it around your finger before going back to the cutting board. Initially, you had planned to make him a pie, but you thought it would just be easier to make him a little cake instead. The rough handling of the bean pods had made little noise, but it was enough to stir Sanji and put him on high alert. He crept out of bed, convinced Luffy was attempting to break into the refrigerator again. He snuck down the stairs stealthily, his sock-padded feet silent on the wood as he made his way to the kitchen. He opened the door, blowing his sneaky cover out of the surprise of seeing you.
"[Name]?? What the hell are you doing in here?" He asked, startling you. You hadn't heard him come in, so it was a bit of a cold shock to see him out of the blue. You set down the knife quickly, making a futile attempt to hide the sloppy slicing job behind you.
"S-Sanji!! I could ask you the same thing, why are you up so late?"
You asked, internally twinging at the nervous edge of your voice. He frowned at you, his eyes wandering to the mess behind your back in curiosity.
"I thought I heard Luffy gorging himself in here, so I was going to surprise attack the shithead.. But instead I found you."
He explained, raising one twirling eyebrow at the cutting board.
"What were you trying to do in here...?"
Damn, you were caught. You sigh, looking down at the ground.
"Well, when we were all talking a month ago, you mentioned your birthday. I know you said you didn't want a party, but I thought I should.. Well.. Let you kick your feet up for the day, and bake you something special.."
The last few sentences were mumbled, your face growing flustered as you revealed your birthday plans to him. You look down at the floor, feeling dumb and expecting no less of an insult from the ship's cook. You heard nothing, and looked up to see the cook with a rather surprised look on his face. Not only that, his cheeks were tinted a rosy hue.
"You.. You wanted to do that... For me??"
He asked in confirmation. You nodded, looking up at him sheepishly. You watched as he took a moment to process, looking a little red in the face as he faced you again. He let out a huff, your face burning as he came up behind you and started to correct your mishandling of the pods.
"W-Well, let's start by showing you how to actually deal with these."
He picked up his own paring knife from the block and took a piece of the butchered pod, focusing on his cutting as he explained your mistakes.
"First, you gently make a slit through the center like so,"
his knife gracefully glided through the vanilla, and he spread the newly-cut wings of the bean pod. You clumsily followed, your large chef's knife feeling a little clunky for this job. He nodded in approval, looking around at the assortment of ingredients in mild confusion.
"Before we go further... What exactly was your game plan here?"
He inquired. You blushed slightly, feeling dumb with the gradual realization that you forgot to plan ahead of that.
"I.. Was going to wing it. I would have flipped through some of your cookbooks to see for a recipe."
You admitted. He sighed, but it wasn't out of exasperation. You were surprised to hear a small chuckle follow as he lit a cigarette, opening a few windows to let the cool night air in. His laugh is kind of cute, you realized, blushing more. He took a drag from the lit cigarette, chuckling again.
"What am I gonna do with you?"
He asked rhetorically. You were left to sit for a bit as he put away and pulled out new ingredients, but you let it go as soon as he brought out the buttermilk from the fridge. You frowned, you may not be an expert in the kitchen, but you knew buttermilk wasn't something you'd usually use in cakes.
"Buttermilk?"
You asked aloud, wondering what the blonde was up to. He looked back at you, grinning as he pulled the griddle from it's hanging hook on the wall.
"I figured we make something quick and easy, and breakfast is a pretty easy start to a day, so why not some old-fashioned pancakes?"
Well.. It was technically morning. That, and pancakes were fun too. You nod, getting out some whisks and mixing bowls from the cabinets. With that, Sanji started instruction.
"First order of business, Mise en Place."
He stated. You cocked your head to the side, unfamiliar with the phrase. He took a drag from his cigarette before elaborating.
"It's a phrase that helps with organization while cooking. Getting out equipment and measuring everything beforehand to make the process easier."
He explained. Ah, so getting everything ready. You nod, looking around you to see the equipment was mostly there. The only thing needed was measuring cups and bowls for the measured ingredients. You got to work, being stopped almost immediately by the blonde.
"[Name], you need to sift the flour first. If you mix it in like that, there will be clumps."
He instructed gently, coming from behind you with the sifter to do it. It was only about a few seconds, but the warmth from his proximity almost made you want to scream. However, you let none of this show as you continued to work under his supervision, listening diligently as he showed you small tricks on how to make your food better. You got to the point of mixing everything, and he once again came up from behind to guide your hand as you whisked the wet and dry ingredients together.
"See, you need to watch how much you mix it, because it's super easy to let all of that air out of the egg whites we fluffed."
He explained. You nodded, letting him lead the way as your hand relaxed into his. The blonde's cheeks were dusted a light pink, but he dared not comment on it. He cleared his throat, separating before gesturing to the skillet. On the counter beside it lay a butter try with about half a stick settled on top of it. Sanji took out a butter knife from the drawer, cutting off a bit before flicking it onto the hot surface. A soft hiss sounded, letting you know it was ready to go. Before starting on cooking the pancakes, he glanced over at you.
"Would you like to do the honors?"
He asked. You chuckled nervously, feeling a little inexperienced compared to him. Even so, it was his birthday. You needed to at least do something to lighten the load. You grabbed a flipper, giving him a determined look.
"Yeah I do!"
He laughed, stunning you for a second. It was still so pretty, even if you'd heard it so many times before. You snap out of the daze as he goes over to the batter bowl, taking up a ladle and dropping small amounts of pancake batter into the skillet. The butter and mix hissed dully, letting you know that it was cooking. You shuffled over to the stovetop, monitoring the pancakes carefully.
"Make sure you don't flip them prematurely, then it's going to take longer. You'll know it's done when the bubbles rise up from the backside."
Sanji said, peeking over your shoulder. You stiffened a bit, something Sanji managed to notice. He frowned with mild concern, looking at you.
"Are you okay? You're acting a little weird, [Name]. Have you had any water lately?"
He asked. You shake your head vigorously, anything to get him from being so damn close. You see bubbles rising to the top of the batter, but you wait. You watch as more bubbles come up, and you decide to flip. To your surprise, the pancakes are a beautiful golden color, the outside browning crisp thanks to the butter. You look back at Sanji eagerly, and he returns the smile you give him twofold.
"Look at that! Not bad for the first batch. They usually turn out pretty iffy when I flip the first few."
He said. You rolled your eyes, knowing it to be a lie. You punched his shoulder gently, chuckling.
"Don't pull an Usopp on me, blondie. I know everything you make in here comes out perfect."
You retort lightly, surprised to see Sanji's blush of a reaction. You turn back to the pancakes quickly, feeling a blush creep up in your cheeks as well. A small silence settled on the both of you as he poured batter and you flipped. As it progressed, your thoughts ate at you. Looking at the situation clearly, your plan was backfiring. Sanji was being forced to cook on his birthday, all because you were too ditzy to handle baking him something. These intrusive words shifted your attention, causing you to use more strength than necessary to try and flip a pancake. Alas, the spatula slipped, and so followed your hand. There came a yelp, a clatter, and small shouts of concern from Sanji. Your hand had made contact with the sizzling skillet only for a moment, but your pinky and palm still hurt like hell.
"[Name]!!"
In an instant, he snatched up your arm, taking you over and plopping you down in a chair before moving the skillet off of the burner and grabbing a clean washcloth off of the counter. He ran it under the tap, squeezing out the excess before gently setting it against the burn. You winced, feeling horrible. He squatted down next to you, emotions in turmoil within those blue eyes of his. You avoid his gaze, feeling ashamed.
"[Name], please look at me."
You bit your lip to keep it from trembling, your good hand curled into a fist as it sat in your lap.
"I'm sorry, Sanji, I really am.."
You whimper shakily.
"Why are you apologizing? It was just an accide-"
"That's not what I'm talking about... I mean I'm sorry you had to cook on your birthday because of me."
There was a small silence before Sanji finally chuckled, taking your good hand into one of his. You blushed, it was rough and somewhat calloused from cooking over the years. You look into his eyes, unable to stop the tears from rolling down your cheeks. He was so sweet, even on the day he should be treated like a king he was there, tending to you. His eyes softened as he wiped your tears away, a smile on his lips.
"You're too kind, [Name], but you don't realize.."
He softly squeezed your hand in his, turning red as he gave you his best grin.
"Being able to cook with you makes this one of my best birthdays."
You burned a bright scarlet, registering his words. You can almost see the steam pouring out of your ears from the heat in your cheeks, uttering out incomprehensible babble. He laughed, letting out a little sigh before kissing your forehead. You jumped at the affection, looking up at him in silent bewilderment
"Alright, now no more tears from you. Hang tight over there, you can't cook with your hand seared like that. I'll be done shortly."
He stated, standing up to his full height before going back to the flapjacks. All you could manage was a dumb nod, watching him intently as he focused. You let out a little sigh, unable to help the rush of affection you felt for him. Despite being a weirdo sometimes, he was one of the most polite, gentle people you had ever met. Soon, he had finished the work the both of you had started in a timely manner, even managing to wash the dishes as well. He went to plating, breaking out some fresh fruits for additional garnishes before setting down two beautiful plates of food on the table. One was topped with raspberries and lightly drizzled with honey, and the other happened to be topped with your favorite fruit along with honey garnish. He slid the latter plate towards you, handing you a small bundle of silverware tucked neatly with a napkin. You chuckled, taking it.
"You can't go without being a little fancy, can you?"
"You're acting like it's a bad thing."
You smiled at each other before digging in.
Without fail, both plates were without a speck of food. You let out a contented sigh, looking over at Sanji. He had lit another cigarette, the stick sitting delicately in between his fingers as he looked out at the sea through the window. He was so pretty, you had always known that, but you had never bothered to acknowledge it. You were pulled out of your thoughts as he got up from his seat, letting out a sigh.
"Well, I'm gonna go."
Sanji said, giving you a smile before turning to leave. You got up from your own seat, getting in front of him before giving him a hug. Surprised, he took a moment before reciprocating, his arms holding you close. If you couldn't manage to express it through his field, maybe you could do it in a way you both understood.
"Happy birthday, Sanji."
You whispered. He chuckled, resting his nose in the crook of your neck.
"Thank you for making it happy, [Name]."
Together With Fruit Ch. 9 (Snippet)
Omgomgomg I actually finished something omg
Obviously this is not the full chapter, but it’s a pretty major chunk of it, and because I’m just so proud of myself and happy that I actually got something I set out to write forever ago FINISHED, I am posting this snippet here as a one-shot (it’s...more than a snippet really, it’s like 4000+ words, and it’s mostly unedited so...ye’ve been warned lol)
Word Count: 4199 (yikes)
Enjoy! Hopefully I’ll have the rest of the chapter finished within the next week or so!
“We’re finally nearing the Grand Line…” Nami muttered, pointing at a spot on the map. “It looks like the only way into it is through Reverse Mountain here.”
“Reverse Mountain?” Hazel murmured, peering over the girl’s shoulder at the point where the seas intersect.
“What a pain. Can’t we just sail straight through it?” Zoro groaned, glaring from where he sat leaning against the rail. Sanji shook his head.
“Nope, from what the geezer told me, that’s the only way boats can enter.”
“How come?” Usopp asked.
“Cause it’s supposedly dangerous.”
“But how come?!”
“I don’t know any more than that!” Sanji yelled, glaring at the sniper.
“Boys, please…” Hazel scolded, trying to stop any fights before they could occur.
“The reason for that is-”
“Alright! I got it!” Luffy interrupted Nami, pointing at the map. “Then let’s head straight into it!”
“Are you even paying attention?!”
“But it sounds fun!” Luffy insisted, grin never wavering. “Plus it’d feel way better going straight into it!”
“Fun or not, I’d like to actually make it to the Grand Line before we die,” Hazel told him, side-eyeing her brother’s enthusiasm. Nami shared the sentiment.
“Talking to you makes me feel like I’m gonna go crazy…” the navigator whined, palm to her forehead in exasperation. Luffy soldiered on, ignoring the women’s concerns.
“Anyways, let’s stop at an island first and get meat! Meat! Meat!” Nami reached a finger out to point at a spot on the map, and Luffy and Hazel both peered closer at the paper.
“There’s a famous city on this island...Loguetown.”
“Loguetown?” Luffy asked, puzzled look on his face as he tried to think. “What? Is it famous for its meat?”
“Also known as the city of the beginning and the end…” Zoro chimed in, thoughtful look on his face. “I’m pretty sure I’ve heard that before.”
“It’s where Gold Roger, the former Pirate King, was born,” Hazel supplied, appearing somber, “and where he was executed.”
“The town where the King of the Pirates died...” Even Luffy’s voice was tame, contemplation clear in his eyes. Nami swung her gaze to meet his, sly smile finding its way across her cheeks.
“Wanna go?”
“Yeah! I wanna see it!” As he spoke, his voice grew more excited, though it never lost its reverence. “I wanna see the town where the man who got the One Piece - everything this world has to offer - was born and then died!” Luffy stood up, grin fixed firmly back in place. “Nami! Set sail for Loguetown!”
As the crew scrambled to set their course, Hazel smiled at her brother’s excitement, though she didn’t share the enthusiasm. She didn’t really harbor any opinions on the former Pirate King, good or bad; there just wasn’t enough information available on who the man truly was. She had asked her grandfather once, considering what she knew about his connection to Ace, but after hours of pestering the only thing he’d told her was “don’t believe everything you hear”. Other than that cryptic statement, she knew about as much as anyone else: he was born in Loguetown, he circumnavigated the entire world, then turned himself in (to her grandfather, no less), and was executed in his hometown. For someone who was so famous, you’d think there’d be more to know about him.
Hazel looked down at the notebook in her hand, blank since Shells Town except for the notes she’d taken. She wasn’t going to let Luffy fall into that same level of anonymity. Sure, the boy couldn’t care less about the fame; his views on being the Pirate King weren’t shared by most other pirates, though she found his ideals to be more admirable. What she really didn’t want to happen, though, was for her baby brother’s name to be smeared by the media, with nothing to counteract it.
Which meant she had a lot of work to do.
“Well, before we get to Loguetown, I have to get to work. Which means I’m shutting myself in my room until I’ve finished writing about our adventure so far!” Hazel stated for all to hear. She ignored the odd looks sent her way. “So no one bug me, ok?” When she’d received satisfactory nods, Hazel made her way to the girls’ room, shut the door, and plopped herself down at the writing desk. She ripped out her pages of notes so she could refer to them easily as she wrote, then opened to a blank page, her pencil hovering above the paper.
An hour later and the page was still blank.
Hazel’s pencil had moved, at least. It’d been set on the desk, balanced on her nose (a failure on her part, but no one could see it so she wasn’t too pressed), twirled between her fingers, tucked behind her ear as she stretched in her chair (and changed position at least three times; currently she had her feet on the back of the chair with her head leaning on the desk). She’d doodled little pictures on her note pages; tiny flowers and crude renditions of her crewmates (note to self: hide these so Nami doesn’t see). There’s a reason she hadn’t decided to illustrate this book.
Another hour later and her legs hurt from how much she’d been bouncing them. The page remained blank, her mind void of ideas, and her eyes were fixed on the picture frame hanging on the far wall. Maybe some food would help? She didn’t think she ate much at breakfast…
As Hazel made her way on deck, she couldn’t help but smile at the sight that greeted her. Nami was lounging in the sun on the top deck, being served some fancy drink from their newest member. Zoro was, surprise, napping beneath the mast, his swords propped in his lap. Luffy sat on the other side of the ship, watching Usopp practice with his slingshot. Oh, that could be fun!
“Whatcha guys doin’?” Hazel asked, sneaking up behind the sniper, causing Luffy to laugh at the boy’s frightful shriek. “Oops! Sorry, Usopp!” He just glared at her in return.
“Usopp’s practicing his slingshot! See? We set up some targets against the other side of the deck, he’s really good!”
“Well, you see Luffy, I’ve been using a slingshot for at least 25 years,” Usopp boasted, ignoring the fact that he was only 17. “Which of course makes me an expert sniper!”
“25 years, huh?” Hazel snarked. “Well, mister “expert”, whaddaya say to a little contest? The closer to a bullseye gets you more points. Whoever gets the most points wins.”
“Uhh, ok, Hazel. But where are you gonna get a slingshot?” Hazel just pointed to Luffy. Specifically his arms. “Hey, now, wait a minute! You can’t use him!”
“Why not?” Hazel and Luffy asked, both with blank looks on their faces. The sniper spluttered.
“Because-! He’s not-! And you-!”
“Ok, look - we’re not going for power here, just accuracy, so it’ll still be a fair contest. And we’ll use the same ammo, ok?” She left no room for him to argue back, immediately grabbing one of the pellets from his hand and positioning her brother. Usopp rolled his eyes behind her, but sidled up next to the two, aiming his own slingshot at the first target.
“Ready...aim...fire!” Usopp let the pellet fly, smacking the target right in the center.
“Hey, nice job Usopp! But I’m gonna tie it up right here!” Hazel ribbed, tying Luffy’s fingers together to form a sling. She pulled them back, tongue poking out between her teeth as she aimed carefully. When she felt confident in her position she nodded, waiting for Usopp to give the signal, and then let go.
The target shattered to pieces.
“Oh fuck-!”
“WHAT ARE YOU THREE DOING?!” Nami’s shrill voice called, causing all three to wince.
“Luffy did it!” Hazel immediately yelled while Usopp checked the ship for damage.
“No I didn’t!”
“Now, Luffy, you know you shouldn’t lie.”
“I’m not-!”
“ENOUGH!” Nami yelled again, interrupting the siblings. “I don’t care who did it, you’re just lucky the ship didn’t get damaged! You and you-” she pointed to Usopp and Luffy “-clean this up! And you!” Nami pointed at Hazel, making the older woman feel suddenly small. “You’re supposed to be writing right now! Not breaking things!”
“Well...you see...the thing is…” Hazel trailed off as Nami continued to glare at her. Huh. She didn’t like being on the receiving end of this. “I was hungry…?”
“Then ask Sanji-kun for a snack and get back to work. You told us not to bother you and we’re listening, take advantage of that!” At Hazel’s huff Nami smiled. “If you’d like, you can sit in the tangerine grove. I find it very relaxing when I need to focus.”
“Hmm...a change of scenery may be helpful. Thanks, Nami,” Hazel smiled, rolling her neck. “I better go bug Sanji.” But Nami held up a hand to stop her.
“Nope! You go sit, I’ll get it. I don’t want you to get distracted again.” The orange-haired girl walked away without another word, and Hazel was forced at that point to just listen to her. She made her way to the upper deck, finding a nice spot under the trees to nestle in. She reopened her notebook to the still blank page, and tapped her pencil against her chin as she tried to focus. The breeze up here was nice, as well as the sounds of her crewmates (Luffy and Usopp had made a game out of cleaning up her mess). The smell of tangerines wafted over her, muddying her senses. One of her curls was tickling her forehead.
She’d made zero headway by the time Sanji appeared with a snack.
“Hazel-chwan!~ I’ve brought you a plate of delicious sandwiches, and a fresh glass of cabernet sauvignon,” the man said, brandishing a platter on one hand and a glass of deep red liquid in the other. She looked to the glass curiously. Despite having practically lived in a bar half her life, she’d never actually tried wine. Her alcohol tended to be of a rougher variety.
“Oh, yeah, alcohol. That’ll help,” Hazel muttered, hoping Sanji didn’t think her rude. For all she knew, it would get the creative juices flowing, so to speak. “Thank you, Sanji.” She smiled at the cook, his feet practically floating off the ground in happiness. He turned to leave her, and Hazel tentatively took a sip of the wine...only to immediately cringe when the bitter liquid hit her tongue. She glanced around in panic, hoping the blond didn’t see, and snuck the glass behind her back, hidden under the trees. “Ooh! Sanji, wait up!” she called, wine forgotten as she grabbed her plate and ran after him.
“Yes, my love?” Sanji asked, twirling around to gaze at her through heart-shaped eyes.
“I just realized that I never asked about what happened at the Baratie! After we left?” The cook’s expression had switched to confusion at her question. “In fact,” she continued, following him into the galley, “I don’t actually know that much about you. Tell me, what’s your dream? Your motivation? Your tragic backstory? Spare me no detail!”
For the first time since they’d met, Sanji wasn’t looking at her with adoration. In fact, he almost looked a little scared. His eyes darted around for half a second while she pulled out her best pout, gray eyes shining like a puppy begging for table scraps. Later, she’d chide herself for being so mean. After all, she used to practically torture Ace with that expression. But for now, she needed answers.
“Well…” Sanji started, pulling himself together before all the blood rushed out of his nose. “I am merely a humble sea cook, mademoiselle. I fought valiantly for my former home, and for the chance to gaze upon your lovely visage once again.” He flourished into a low bow.
“Uh huh,” Hazel chuckled, an amused smile on her face as she raised a brow. “Definitely humble.” Sanji rose back to standing, an easy grin in place at their shared humor. “Come on, lover boy. Sit with me awhile and tell me a story.”
The two sat and talked for a time, Hazel’s pencil scratching across the pages of her notebook as Sanji divulged all the details he felt comfortable sharing: how Luffy had bartered with Zeff for his freedom, the way he’d swatted projectiles with a single kick. She had a feeling he may’ve been embellishing his actions a bit, but having seen the way he’d toppled part of a building at Arlong Park, she knew it wasn’t all bluster.
He told her of Pearl, the man who’d covered himself in armor, only to lose his mind (and catch fire, apparently) at the first drop of blood. How Gin, the man he’d helped, had taken the old man hostage, and how he’d been willing to die to save his mentor’s dream. Hazel filed away that note for later, planning to ask about the clear devotion Sanji had for the old man, even if the blond tried to hide it behind snark.
She tried not to laugh when Sanji told her Luffy destroyed part of the ship. From what he was telling her, it was actually a brilliant stroke on Luffy’s part, and definitely contributed to Sanji’s outlook on the situation; but the way the blond’s curly brow furrowed over his eyes at the memory was, in her opinion, hilarious.
“So, wait,” Hazel started, pausing Sanji’s tale of his fight with Gin. “How did you come to the Baratie in the first place? Zeff isn’t your father, is he? Why so devoted to preserving his dream?”
Discomfort crossed the cook’s face, as it had earlier, but whether it was his dedication to please the woman in front of him, or because he’d already come this far, he gifted her with the reason. “He saved my life,” was the simple answer. The follow-up nearly brought tears to her eyes.
Hazel reached across the table, covering his hand with her own, and she sent him a soft smile. A light blush dusted his cheeks, and she allowed him to turn away to light a cigarette; she even grabbed the ashtray off the back shelf for him.
Just as they were about to continue, the door to the galley swung open, a rubbery body bouncing its way inside. “Sanji!! Food!” Luffy yelled, head turning frantically before his eyes finally settled on the cook.
“You just ate, you damn animal!” The cook scolded, and the somber mood was broken as Hazel burst into laughter.
“But I’m hungry! Food!”
“I’m busy!” Hazel took that moment to step in.
“It’s alright, Sanji. I can get the rest from you later. If you don’t start dinner soon, we may not have a ship to sail on anymore,” she laughed, drawing Luffy’s attention. The boy leaped onto the bench in front of her, taking Sanji’s place, and glancing at the notebook for a second without reading.
“Whatcha talkin’ about? Whaddaya need Sanji for?”
“He was telling me about your fight with Don Krieg, since I missed it.”
“Oh! I can tell you! There was a boom! And a woosh! And then I went ‘Gum-Gum Bazooka’! And then there was poison gas, but we’re fine, and then everything went boom boom boom boom! And then I got poked a lot! And then-” Hazel tuned out as her brother continued telling her all about the fight with as little detail as possible. Sanji shot her a confounded look over their captain’s shoulder, and the girl replied with a nonchalant shrug. When Luffy finally finished, he looked to his sister expectantly, proud grin wide across his face.
“Thanks Luffy, I’ll make sure to write that down.” The boy nodded, then looked back at her notes from Sanji’s story.
“Looks like you’ve gotten a lot done!” Hazel flinched, grimacing into her palm.
“Yes and no…” Luffy just looked at her, confusion in his eyes, and Hazel gave a heavy sigh. “To be honest, Luff...I don’t really know where to start.”
“At the beginning. Duh.”
“Wow, I never thought about that,” Hazel deadpanned. “And get your finger out of your nose!” As Luffy stuck his tongue out at her, something struck her. Hazel’s eyes widened, an invisible energy urging her hand to move across the paper. “Actually, Luffy, you’re a genius! Thank you!”
She vaguely heard him say something in agreement, but her mind was too focused on the idea it had. Start at the beginning...she was surprised the thought hadn’t occurred to her earlier; after all, she’d only just told the story a week ago.
--------------
Foosha Village had always been a peaceful town. Even when pirates had settled their sails at its docks the year previous, the villagers had yet to deal with much past the occasional bandit or two. Our lives had been much the same, short as they were; filled with fun and laughter and play. Then one day, the stuff of legends became real, and peace would be known no more.
The sun had shown brightly that morning, though my brother and I had already been up for hours. We always had trouble sleeping the closer to Shanks’ departure. In only a short time, the red-headed man had wormed his way into our lives, and our hearts, and my brother especially was determined to join him this time.
So it was that we stood on the deck of the Red-Hair Pirate’s ship, the hustle and bustle of supplies and crates being loaded around us. A few of the men were singing songs - definitely inappropriate considering the children in their company - but we’d already spent the last seven years in a bar. There was nothing in those songs we hadn’t heard before.
I had been listening to Benn Beckman’s tale of their last voyage when Shanks’ voice had called our attention to the figurehead. Standing atop the dragon’s maw, my brother Luffy stood glaring down at our pirate friends. Unfortunately, none of us had taken his declaration of strength seriously. Not until he drove the knife beneath his eye.
The paragraphs flew quickly out of her hand, the day in question clear in her mind. Hazel took a moment to shake out her wrist, feeling stiff as she read over her work so far. She liked it, she really did. Now to keep up this momentum.
The door opened once again, and Usopp and Nami wandered in, talking about something she couldn’t hear. Hazel was still glaring at the page, chewing her cheek as she thought about how to word her next sentence. She heard Sanji mention dinner would be ready soon, Luffy’s excitement sounding through the room, then Usopp’s hiss for him to be quiet.
“Don’t distract her! She’s scary when she’s mad!” the boy whimpered out, much to Luffy’s amusement.
“No she’s not!” he laughed, drawing the sniper’s ire.
“You didn’t think that when she made you take a bath!” Hazel stifled a snort.
“Speaking of which,” Nami chimed in, holding a hand to her nose. “How long ago was that?”
“Actually, Luffy, you are due for one. Zoro too,” Hazel said, looking up at her surprised crewmates. What, did they think she couldn’t hear them at all? “Why don’t you go wash up before dinner. Please?” Luffy groaned, glaring at the navigator, but dutifully made his way to the bathroom. Despite what he said, he didn’t want to push his sister. Again.
Hazel took that moment to stand up, stretching her back with a loud pop, grabbed her notebook, and made her way outside to tell their grungy swordsman his bath was after dinner. She couldn’t see him at first when she stepped outside, but after glancing around for a moment, she finally spotted him. She blinked when she saw his bare back, mesmerized for a moment at the way the muscles rippled as he did push-up after push-up. A second later, she blinked the distraction away, and walked down the steps to the grass-haired man.
“Hey, your turn for a bath after dinner,” she told him, practically hearing him grit his teeth at the notion. “Dinner’s actually almost done, by the way, so you may wanna wrap it up here.”
“Not done,” he grunted, prompting her to raise a brow in his direction.
“Well find a way to be done. We’re hungry, and you’re sweaty.”
“If I’m gonna get stronger, I can’t cut training short. I need more weight.” His gray eyes swung up to hers, and Hazel got the distinct sense he was sizing her up.
“What do you want me to do about that?” She regretted asking the instant she said it. Zoro gestured to his back. His extremely sweaty back.
“Climb on.”
“Excuse me? What are you insinuating here?” She crossed her arms, trying to decide if she needed to hit him for calling her fat or not. She caught him rolling his eyes.
“You’re all muscle, it’s heavier. Climb on.” Hazel chewed her lip, weighing the pros and cons. Then, deciding she had nothing to lose except her hygiene (and really, she could do with a bath herself), she stepped closer to him, cautiously sitting down when he paused for her. He reached his arm around, causing a startled squeak as he adjusted her position, then he resumed his training, a new strain in his breath.
While he worked, Hazel puzzled once again over her notebook. Disappointment flowed through her as she stared at the four lone paragraphs, the struggle for where to take the story next staying her hand. She’d gotten nothing done today, and it was difficult not to take it to heart.
“What are you sighing about up there?” her cushion grunted below her. Hazel rolled her eyes, but decided to humor him by answering anyway.
“I’ve been working on this all day, and somehow I have nothing to show for it.” Zoro was silent except for his heavy breathing, but for some reason she pushed on. “What kind of record-keeper am I? What kind of storyteller can’t tell a damn story? I don’t even have to make it all up, it’s all stuff that happened…” A puff of air escaped her as her eyes began to sting. “Maybe I’m not cut out for this…”
She hadn’t meant to say it, at least not out loud, and was startled when her chair suddenly stood up. She cried out as she fell, but before she could hit the floor, Zoro’s arms came out to steady her. She looked up at him in shock, affronted at the small glare he sent her way. “Read it out loud,” he said, pointing to the little book in her hands.
“Eh?!” Hazel shrieked, appalled at the very notion of any living being actually hearing her work out loud.
“Read it out loud,” Zoro said again, shrugging his shirt back on. “Then I can tell you if it’s shitty.”
“No way! It’s not ready for human consumption yet!” she yelled, glaring as he sat below the mast. “Besides, who are you to tell me if it’s shit? You wouldn’t know good literature if it waved a sword at you and said ‘boy, speak your name’!” Zoro rolled his eyes at the reference, but leveled her with a steady gaze as it dawned on her the trick he was trying to pull. “Stop it, it’s mine. Why should I share it with you?”
“Because I like the way you tell stories.” He said it so simply, like it didn’t carry nearly the weight for him that it did for her. Hazel felt the blood rush to her cheeks, but she didn’t look away. Something held her gaze on his, something she couldn’t possibly name.
“So how does me reading it aloud help me write it?” Her voice was so quiet, she was surprised he could even hear it.
“Just write it how you’d say it,” he answered, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. And when he said it like that, it did seem obvious, and Hazel could kick herself for not thinking of it sooner. Before she knew it, she felt herself nodding, sitting beside him beneath the sail.
“Foosha Village had always been a peaceful town….” she began, reading from the beginning, and surprising herself when her voice continued past the last paragraph. He’d heard the story before, but still Zoro sat, listening with rapt attention. Her voice slowed as she wrote, not allowing herself to forget what she’d said, what phrases she used that flowed from her mouth like water.
At one point Hazel glanced beside her, surprised to see the swordsman’s eyes shut. She let out a sigh, finishing her sentence, but not continuing on. She found herself rolling her eyes at the sleeping swordsman, irked that he apparently found her so boring.
“You stuck again?”
Hazel turned to him again, meeting his gaze through half-lidded eyes. She let out a half chuckle, shaking her head in amusement, before diving into the next paragraph.
It was only Luffy’s call of “Dinner!!” that finally drew the two inside.
Law stood on the deck of the Polar Tang, Bepo at his side, as the ship ambled into the East Harbor of Dressrosa. While the ship could have remained underwater until much closer to the dock, Law wanted to show Doffy that he wasn’t hiding, so he’d ordered the Tang to surface early. Dressrosa was a country Law could have seen himself enjoying, had Doflamingo not ruled with a façade of generosity and warmth while hiding a dark, cold underbelly. As it was, the sight of the familiar island made his stomach turn.
There was a lone figure waiting at the dock.
“Be careful,” Bepo said as the ship eased to a stop and dropped anchor.
“You too,” Law replied, hopping down from the ship to the dock. He adjusted his grip on Kikoku and greeted his visitor. “Violet.”
“Corazon,” she replied. “Welcome back.”
Law inclined his head and fell into step with her as they headed toward the city. He chanced one final glance back at the Tang—Bepo was securing the ship to the dock—before shifting his focus to the task at hand.
“Did he send you to meet me?” he asked.
“Yes, but I would have come anyway.”
When Law had first arrived in Dressrosa at 17, it had taken some time to find his footing among the Family again after four years. Not only had the operation grown significantly since Spider Miles, but Law’s own reluctance to return after his disappearance with a traitor to the Family hung like a noose around his neck. The executives and officers had been loath to trust him, though Doffy had overruled their concerns, and weren’t shy about taking out their suspicions on him and his crew. For the longest time, the only member of the Family he could stomach being around was Baby 5; they’d picked up their antagonistic but affectionate dynamic almost immediately upon Law’s return, which provided Law a small measure of comfort in its familiarity.
At first after arriving, Law had lashed out—his frustration exploding out of him when he couldn’t contain it any longer, usually as a result of the goading of the other executives—but when Shachi, Penguin, and Bepo had been punished rather than Law himself, he’d withdrawn into himself to protect them. He’d trained and studied and completed missions, but he’d shown little interest in living beyond the minimum required of him, despite the attempts of his friends to pull him out of it. Even Doflamingo had tried without success to bring some life to his protégé—he’d gifted Law Kikoku in the hope that the challenge of mastering a cursed blade might inspire him; he’d mastered the sword, but it hadn’t done much to liven him up.
Despite her wariness of anyone associated with the Family, Violet had been the only one to reach out to Law during his withdrawn period and actually reach him. After about a year into Law’s return, she’d read him often enough for Doflamingo to recognize a kindred spirit in the future Corazon. Three years apart in age, they’d both been shanghaied into the Family’s service due to their useful abilities with the threat of violence against their loved ones hanging over their heads if they were to rebel.
Her cynicism after the fall of her family’s rule was an equal match for Law’s, and they both had dark senses of humor forged from their circumstances. Violet was also well-read and intellectually curious, so their conversations kept Law on his toes. They found comfort in one another, which made life on Dressrosa bearable enough for Law to slowly emerge from his shell.
Though some of the executives and officers had been concerned with a friendship between the two people with the most reason to betray the Family, Doffy had been amused—even pleased. In the last year, he’d floated the idea of the two marrying to tie Dressrosa more formally to the Family; after all, though Doflamingo was a Warlord with government immunity and his own family name tying him to the kingdom, many other kingdoms still considered him an interloper. Having his second married to the former crown princess would be politically advantageous.
“He wants you to read me. To catch me lying,” Law said, coming to a stop. Violet stopped next to him and nodded. “Go ahead then.” He knew she’d need to be able to give Doffy something useful.
Violet frowned. “Are you sure?”
Law just shrugged. “No need to give him more reason to doubt.”
Violet pursed her lips but put her fingers to her eyes and used her Fruit to read Law’s thoughts and memories. After a few moments, she dropped her hands. “The Isle of Women. Really?” she asked, raising an eyebrow.
Law snorted and started walking again. Violet fell in beside him, her heels clacking on the cobblestones as they made their way toward the distant palace. “All we saw was the coastline. Much to the crew’s disappointment.”
“And you still don’t know why you did it.” Her tone was skeptical.
Law glanced sideways at her. “You read my thoughts, Princess.”
She rolled her eyes, as she always did when he called her that. “You took a serious risk, saving that boy. And for what?”
“That remains to be seen, I suppose.”
“I hope it was worth it,” Violet said, something dark underlying her words.
As they walked, Dressrosans bowed and murmured their names as they passed. Law paid them no mind, though he knew the deference to her alias as an officer of the Family bothered Violet by the tightening of her eyes.
“How’s Doffy been?” Law asked after a few quiet moments.
“Furious,” she replied. “But you already knew that.” She bit her lip briefly, a nervous habit of hers. “His mood has improved since you called a week ago, though.”
“That’s not good.” It meant he’d made a decision about how to deal with Law, and that didn’t bode well for him.
“Doubtful,” she agreed. “But I don’t know what he’s up to.”
Law had once asked her if she’d ever tried using her abilities on Doflamingo, but the look she’d given him in response had been withering. “What kind of fool do you take me for?” she’d demanded.
“And the crew I left behind?” Law asked, dread pooling in his gut. “How are they?”
“Fine, as far as I know.”
The relief that washed over him was short-lived as Law realized it simply meant they would be punished alongside the rest of the crew now that everyone was back.
He nodded stiffly, and they fell into silence once more as they walked. Unlike other silences with the Family, though, it was comfortable. He didn’t have anything to prove to Violet. Once they arrived at the palace, they headed into the courtyard.
“Oh, look who’s back,” Baby 5 said, hand going to her hip as the pair walked in. “It’s about time, Corazon!”
Law rolled his eyes at her. “Did I miss any more ill-fated romances while I was gone, Baby?”
“Shut up!” she snapped around her cigarette. “He needed me!”
Law opened his mouth to retort—the banter familiar and comforting—but he was cut off by his least favorite executive. “Ne, ne, Corazon. Doffy is in the Suit Room. I wouldn’t keep him waiting. Behehe,” he chuckled, clearly pleased that Law was going to face consequences for what he’d done.
Law flipped him off, which only made the slime bucket laugh harder. Taking a steadying breath, Law turned—briefly meeting Violet’s gaze—and headed into the palace toward the Suit Room. Doffy would know of his arrival by now, so Trebol, as annoying as he was, was right about not keeping the king of Dressrosa waiting.
Once he reached the door, Law raised his free hand and rapped on the shut door twice. A moment later, it opened. Law schooled his features and stepped inside. Doflamingo sat by the window, across from the four seats of his top executives.
“I’ve returned, Young Master,” Law said, trying to assess the other man’s mood with little luck.
“Corazon. Come.”
Law made his way to the Heart seat and sat down, resting Kikoku against the chair. When he looked back up, Doflamingo was watching him, expression inscrutable behind those glasses. Law let the part of him that was Corazon take over, pushing the other parts of him aside. This part of him didn’t concern himself with the two men who’d claimed this seat before him or cower in the face of the man who had dominated his nightmares for more than a decade. His back straightened and he raised his chin as the mask slid into place. He also knew better than to speak before the king.
“I trust there were no more… detours on your return home,” Doflamingo said after a pregnant pause.
“No, we made good time,” Law replied evenly.
Doflamingo nodded and pushed himself to his feet. He towered over Law even when Law was standing; when Law was sitting, he was downright dwarfed by the other man. But Corazon, the captain’s second in command, was not bothered by that.
“You’ve caused me quite a bit of trouble with the World Government.” He’d said as much during the call a week earlier. “I’ve smoothed everything over, with no little effort.”
“My apologies, Young Master. It was not my intention to cause you problems.”
Doflamingo stepped into Law’s space, leaning over him. “And what was your intention?” The tension bleeding from that last work was palpable.
Corazon knew the importance of telling the truth in this interaction; still, Law hesitated, knowing Doflamingo wouldn’t like the answer. “I don’t know why I did it. I just acted.”
Doflamingo leaned over, placing his massive hands on the arms of the Heart seat, enclosing Law in his presence. “You don’t know,” he repeated, as if testing the words to see how they tasted. “You just acted.” His features tightened. “That doesn’t sound like you, Corazon.”
“I know.” Law preferred to plan for every contingency, plans on top of plans and every possibility considered before he made a move—all the years of evening games of chess with Doflamingo had drilled into him the importance of tactics—but he’d thrown all of that out for a feeling.
“You know I don’t like questioning the loyalty of my subordinates—especially my righthand man.”
“I know.”
“And yet,” he went on, as if Law hadn’t spoken, “how I can do anything but when my second comes out of the sea to save not one but two enemies of the World Government from the battlefield?”
“I will accept the consequences of my actions,” Law said, doing his best to keep his voice even. “My loyalty has not changed.”
Doflamingo stepped back, huffing a wry laugh. “Now that I believe.” He shook his head to himself. “Get yourself cleaned up. We’re taking a trip this evening.”
Law blinked in surprise at the sudden dismissal but nodded. “Yes, Young Master.” He grabbed Kikoku and rose. He was halfway to the door when his haki flared and he felt the air shift. But he was too slow in reacting.
A massive hand pressed suddenly against the back of his neck, shoving him forward into the closed door. Law let out a startled gasp as the air left his chest. Doflamingo draped himself over Law’s back, his lips by Law’s ear. Law did his best to suppress his instinct to fight back.
Doflamingo’s breath was warm and moist on Law’s skin as he murmured, “It wouldn’t be appropriate for the rabble to see an executive punished. But I can’t let insubordination stand either.”
Law’s breath hitched as Doflamingo spun him around so his back was pressed against the door. The hand that had been holding him immobile wrapped around his throat. It squeezed, cutting off Law’s breath. Law’s eyes widened and his free hand clawed at Doflamingo’s wrist on instinct, but the Warlord continued to squeeze. Black encroached on Law’s vision as his lungs screamed for air. His head spun and Kikoku slipped from his weaking grip.
Finally, when Law thought he would pass out, Doflamingo released him.
Law gasped greedily for air as his legs gave out from under him and he brought both hands to his neck, wincing at the tenderness. Once his breath had returned to semi-normal, he looked up at Doflamingo.
“Never forget who holds your life and the lives of your crew, Law.” Again, he’d purposefully used Law’s name. “Now go clean yourself up.”
Law took a steadying breath and nodded. He grabbed Kikoku and used her to push himself unsteadily to his feet. “By your leave, Young Master,” he croaked, throat feeling like he’d swallowed broken glass, as he opened the door and stumbled into the hallway toward his room.
-----
Viola entered the Suit Room when Doflamingo summoned her; his meeting with Law must have ended already, as he was alone. She kept her eyes on the usurper as she approached, knowing why she had been summoned. She stopped a respectable distance in front of the Warlord.
“Doffy,” she greeted, bowing her head.
“Violet. You read Corazon upon his arrival.” It wasn’t a question.
“I did.” She’d been ordered to do so, and she followed her orders to keep her family safe.
“He says he doesn’t know why he saved Straw Hat.” Again, it wasn’t a question. Still, he was expecting an answer.
“True,” Viola confirmed. In Law’s memories, she’d felt the tug in his chest that had guided him, but he hadn’t understood what it was or what it was telling him. “He acted on instinct.”
Doflamingo frowned, looking out the window. “It’s not like him.”
“He’s been wondering about his actions since that day,” Viola said, hoping she might buy Law even the smallest amount of leniency if she confirmed his story. She kept the truth of Law’s name and its connection to the other boy to herself, though. He’d confided in her about that secret name years earlier and the danger he would be in if Doflamingo found out about it.
“Where was he?”
“Amazon Lily.” She couldn’t say she didn’t know something so prominent in his memories. “Boa Hancock seems to have a soft spot for Straw Hat Luffy.”
Doflamingo barked a surprised laugh at that. “Interesting.” He seemed to file that information away for later. “And his loyalty?”
“Unchanged.”
That much was true; Law, like Viola herself, hadn’t been truly loyal to the Family since she’d known him, but his desire for the safety of his crew and his willingness to do whatever it took to protect them had been a constant since he was 17 and newly arrived in Dressrosa. Saving Straw Hat Luffy hadn’t changed that.
Doflamingo smiled, but there was no warmth in it. “It seems he was honest with me, then.” He glanced back at Viola. “Keep an eye on him. Shouldn’t be hard since he enjoys your company.”
Viola frowned at the implication but quickly schooled her expression. “Of course.”
-----
When Law reached his room, he found his belongings had already been brought up from the Polar Tang. As he shucked off his clothes and hopped in the shower, he wondered where his crew was. Had they been allowed to return to their rooms? Shaking his head, he washed the travel from his skin and hair. Once clean, he wrapped a towel around his waist, and, on the way back into his room, caught a glimpse of his reflection in the mirror.
He grimaced, fingers lightly tracing the already-purpling marks on his neck. He knew the marks would be visible for days, and his voice would be rough for about as long. He could use his powers to accelerate the healing, but that would defeat the entire point of the exercise, and Law knew better than that.
Executives had to appear above reproach in the eyes of the public to keep up the illusion of their absolute power, so Doffy couldn’t punish him publicly, but the evidence of punishment would show Law’s actions had been dealt with. But Law also knew some ugly bruises around his neck wouldn’t be the only punishment; at this point, however, he could only worry about what would be done to his crew, as they were Doffy’s primary means of keeping Law in line.
With a scowl, he returned to his room and pulled some clothes nicer than his typical jeans and a hoodie that Doflamingo insisted he have for formal events from his closet. The fabric was light since Dressrosa was a summer island, and Law made sure not to choose anything that would cover his neck; Doflamingo, sadist that he was, would want his handiwork on display.
Grabbing Kikoku, Law gave himself a final once-over; satisfied, he left his room. He’d just turned the corner when he nearly ran headfirst into Baby 5. She opened her mouth, undoubtedly to snarl something unkind at him, but the words died on her lips as her gaze dropped to Law’s neck. Her eyes widened.
“What?” Law demanded, hating the rasp in his voice.
Baby shook herself before looking Law in the eye again. “The Young Master told me to find you. He’s waiting in the courtyard.”
Law frowned at that. He could have sensed Doffy himself with his haki; there was no reason to send Baby as a messenger—except to make sure she saw Doffy’s handiwork up close. Law ground his teeth but nodded at Baby.
“Thanks.”
She gaped at him as he stepped past her. “Seriously?”
Law paused with a tired sigh. “What?”
She narrowed her eyes at him. “Since when do you thank me, Corazon?”
Law rolled his eyes. “It won’t happen again if that’s the reaction I’m going to get.” He made to start walking again.
“Wait.”
Law stopped and looked at her expectantly. Baby swallowed and reached a tentative hand toward his neck. Law flinched but didn’t stop her gentle touch to the purpling handprints. Her fingers were ghost-light as she touched the marks.
“Are you okay?” she asked quietly.
Law looked away, unable to deal with the genuine concern in her expression. “I’m fine.”
“Cora— Law.”
Law started and looked back at Baby. What was with people using his name lately? “What?”
“Just. Be careful. I don’t know why you did what you did, but the Young Master…” She trailed off, biting her lip.
Law took Baby’s hand in his grip, gently pulling it away from his neck, and nodded. “I know,” he said, not unkindly. He let go of her hand.
Baby dropped her hand and watched him, uncertain.
“I shouldn’t keep Doffy waiting,” Law said, and Baby jerked.
“Damn right, asshole,” she said, though her voice lacked any heat.
Law’s lips twitched and he headed for the courtyard, feeling Baby’s eyes on his back. When he entered the courtyard, Doflamingo appraised him. When he was satisfied with what he saw, gaze noticeably lingering on Law’s throat, he rose from his seat.
“There you are, Corazon. Come, we’re going out.”
Law nodded, ignoring Trebol’s knowing look. He didn’t speak, not wanting the sentient snot to hear his broken voice, instead simply falling in a half step behind Doflamingo, the appropriate place for his second. A carriage was waiting just outside the palace gates, and the two men entered and took their place across from one another.
Law remained silent as the royal carriage wound its way through the familiar streets of the capital, looking out the window and considering the direction they were taking.
“You haven’t asked where we’re going,” Doflamingo finally commented.
Law turned to the king. “Would you have answered?”
Doflamingo smirked, and Law had a feeling at least part of his amusement was at the sound of his voice. “No,” he allowed. “It’s a surprise.”
Law nodded, having assumed as much. He returned his gaze to the window, though his thoughts were with his crew and not the city they were meandering through. Violet had said Ikkaku, Clione, and Uni were unharmed, but how much longer would that last? What had happened to the rest of his crew once they’d disembarked the Polar Tang?
He was pulled from his thoughts when the carriage came to a halt. Law blinked when he realized where they were.
Law looked back at Doflamingo with a sinking feeling that he couldn’t explain. “The Colosseum?”
Doflamingo simply nodded and gestured toward the carriage door. “Let’s go.”
Law had little choice but to do as he was bidden, so he followed Doflamingo out of the carriage. The king was in his element as he greeted his adoring public. Law fell into place behind the other man and followed him inside to the king’s private box.
His hackles went up when he saw Diamante waiting inside the box. The executive gave Law an appraising look before nodding at Doflamingo. “Doffy,” he greeted. “Everything is ready.”
“Good.”
Doflamingo sat and nodded for Law to take the seat to the king’s right. Law did as he was bidden, and Diamante took his place to Doffy’s left. Law looked out over the amphitheater to see, as usual, a large crowd of raucous citizens. The Corrida Colosseum was the premier entertainment in Dressrosa, after all.
“Welcome to this special event at the Corrida Colosseum!” the commentator, Gatz, announced. “Today, we will see fighters from around Dressrosa get the opportunity to earn their freedom or even join the Donquixote Family by defeating a member of Corazon’s own crew, the Hearts!”
Lost Things Ch. 5 (Epilogue)
The Reuinion
 Epilogue
Someone had told him once, years ago, that the shivers that ran up his spine when nothing was around to cause it meant that someone was walking across his grave. It was a weird saying attached to a funny feeling that gave it a vague sense of foreboding.
Now, standing in front of his own grave, Ace was a little disappointed that he didn't’t feel any shivering at all. Just a bit of melancholy. On the cross was his favorite orange hat, a gift from Luffy all those years ago, his belt and dagger, and a necklace that he had been sure Akainu’s fist had broken two and a half years ago.
“I gathered the beads,” Marco said, as if reading Ace’s mind. He was good at that. “Haruta tried to help me string them back together, but I didn’t let her. I felt like- like I had to do it. On my own.”
Without looking, Ace grabbed his hand.
“Thank you,” he said. He looked at tomb, where they had erected a grave with his name on it. It was weird, he felt like it should have been more horrifying, to see where he had supposedly been laid to rest. Instead he just felt bitter that his family had had to erect it in the first place.
He and Marco still hadn’t been to see the others yet. Marco had explained, after his memories returned, that he was now leading the Whitebeard Pirates. After his crash into the icy islands and the ensuing months they had to spend together (which, Ace did not mind at all ) Marco had wanted to give Ace a chance to ease back into the swing of piracy before throwing him to the metaphorical sharks.
He was also probably well aware of the fact that the instant they had settled Ace was going to want to hunt down Teach, as well as that had gone before.
All of these thoughts were really just Ace procrastinating looking slightly to the right. Wind caught the massive white coat and pulled it, reminding the young man of the fact that he couldn’t put this off forever.
Ace breathed in the tepid air, trying to acquire some modicum of calm.
He lifted his eyes, slowly, to the monument built for his father. His real father. The one that loved him regardless of his origins, taken him in and offered to share his family. Edward Newgate was the only father that Ace had ever known.
  And I got him killed.
Ace couldn’t breath around the knot in his throat.
“Pop’s… I’m so-”
“Don’t you dare.”
Ace swallowed tensely and looked over his shoulder. Marco’s gaze, normally half lidded and lazy, had sharpened. A gaze golden now outside of a phoenix transformation, a sign of how intensely Marco felt about Ace’s near apology.
“Marco…”
“Don’t. Pops died for you, Little Oars jr. did too. Don’t disrespect their love for you by apologizing for their willing sacrifice. If Luffy told you he was sorry he survived after you died for him, how would you feel?”
Ace worked his jaw slowly. The guilt in his heart wasn’t alleviated, not a bit, but he knew the truth in Marco’s words. If Luffy apologized for living-
  Luffy.
Ace looked away from Marco, back to the grave. He bowed his head to hide his dampening cheeks. Where was his hat when he needed it?
“Thank you,” he said instead. “For being a wonderful father. I-I love you, pops!”
Ace could have sworn that he felt a massive hand weighing down on his back, warming his shoulders. A familiar laugh was carried on the wind.
  “I love you too, my son! “
~
“Man, Luffy is going to lose his shit when he sees me.”
Marco glanced over at Ace, who was very meticulously applying makeup to hide his freckles. He had taken to tying his long, flowing hair into a loose bun behind his head these days, and even in the warmer climate of Dressrosa he had his throat covered with the thick white scarf that fluttered behind his back when he ran. It wasn’t much of a disguise, in terms of effort, but often times the best ones were the easiest. Not to mention the fact that Ace had died, publically been executed, two years ago. Most anyone who saw him now would just assume they were crazy, or that there was just a strange resemblance between him and the young pirate prince.
Pirate Prince, now that was a strange thing to think.
At this point, it was more accurate to call Luffy the prince, seeing as he would be the next King and all.
“Does your brother know that his hat belonged to Roger?” Marco asked abruptly.
Ace’s head snapped towards him. The younger pirate stared at Marco open mouthed. So Ace hadn’t known either? Not that surprising. Ace hadn’t even been born when Roger died.
“Ah. Never mind then,” Marco waved his hand to dismiss his words. Ace was marginally less sensitive about his lineage since he regained his memories, Marco could only guess why. That was the only reason there hadn’t been an outburst of Ace’s Issues with the dead king.
“Wait, does that mean Shanks was on  his  crew?” Ace turned towards Marco. Marco handed him his combat boots.
“Shanks? Yeah, he was Roger’s apprentice back in the day. Trouble maker back then. Not much has changed,” Marco shrugged casually. This was all old news. Roger had always been pretty good at keeping his cabin brats out of the limelight, so the government and therefore the public didn’t know about his relationship. Still, he thought…
Well, it didn’t matter what he thought.
“Who knew,” Ace shook his head. He needed it clear for what they were about to do.
“For the record, I’m against this,” Marco said for the millionth time.
For the millionth time Ace replied, “That won’t stop me. Lu needs to know I’m okay.”
“Just… be careful,” Marco must have let some of his genuine worry leak into his voice because Ace’s expression softened. He crossed what little space there was in their cheap hotel room and sat next to Marco, close enough they were pressed side to side.
Marco couldn’t help it if he worried. He had already lost so much already. He had barely kept the crew together in the last two years and even now most of them were in hiding after the disastrous attempt at revenge.
The attempt he’d lead them in.
A strong arm draped comfortably across Marco’s shoulders.
“We sure are a pair, huh?” Ace joked. “What would Pops say?”
Marco snorted. “He’d tell us to get our heads out of our asses and start acting like pirates.”
“Yeah. So what are we doing sitting on our asses? We’ve got trouble to stir up!”
Marco shook his head and leaned on Ace. He didn’t like this, the whole thing smelled like a trap. As if the devil fruit wasn’t enough proof of the fact that they were luring people in, the whole country was populated by living toys. It made Marco’s skin crawl.
He still had a lot of questions in regards to the fruit, and exactly what had happened with Ace. People didn’t just disappear in a flare of red when they were supposed to be dead. Accounts of devil fruit were rare and far between, so he just assumed that it had something to do with the Flame Flame Fruit. And, Ace still had his fire power.
So, either the fruit that was being offered as a prize was a fake, or they were missing something important about Logias.
Thinking about it, Marco had never heard of a logia user dying.
There was so much about devil fruits that no one knew, so much that they didn’t understand. Even to the people who had eaten them, even to people like Marco, who had seen thousands of devil fruit in his long life didn’t know that much about them.
Marco sighed and gently shoved Ace. He pushed a ski cap into his hands.
“Get going. You’re in A block yeah? Be careful and remember-”
“No fires, I know, I know,” Ace held up his hand and an exhasperated surrender. He flashed Marco a guileless smile and, with a parting kiss, ran off through the door with his scarf pulled up over his mouth.
Marco had a very bad feeling about all of this.
~
Ace had had a good feeling about this, at the start of the fight.
By the time he was on his knees, gulping in air while the crowds screamed around him, his opinion had changed a little.
Mr. Store lay on the ground in front of him, his eyes rolled into the back of his head. Blood dripped down a cut on his temple, saturating the brown paper bag that covered the rest of his face. One of his arms was bent at the wrong angle and the rubber on his boots had melted at some point. Hopefully no one would notice, what with the whole undercover thing.
Ace was breathing so hard he felt cold from his lungs outwards, only combated by his devil fruit abilities. Ace lifted his clenched fists above his head, tilted his face towards the sun a roared his victory for the world to hear.
He hadn’t thought the fight would be that hard. Everyone else in the block had fallen easily, but this Mr. Store just would  stay down.  Ace had to give credit where it was due, not a lot of people could take what he had dished out.
In the months since he had come back from the grave he had been training his ass off in a desperate attempt to get back to where he was, and to surpass that level entirely. If he couldn’t, he didn’t have the right to sail the seas. The New World was a place where only the strong survived, and Ace would not be a burden on Marco while they travelled together. So he trained, harder than he ever had in his life.
He would have been stronger if he hadn’t spent the last two years doing little more than running around a snow island, chopping wood and helping fix houses. But, he was stronger than he had been before, finally.
Strong enough to clear the coliseum block without using his devil fruit powers once.
...well, maybe once. Just to give him a little bit of leverage in that last bout.
Ace rocked unsteadily to his feet. He’d taken more damage than he’d wanted too. Marco was gonna be pissed when he got back. Actually, from the dark glower that was clouding his face from where he sat in the crowd, he was already pissed. Great.
Ace smiled sheepishly and scratched the back of his head. His bun had almost come loose. God, he needed a haircut. After he wasn’t in hiding any more he was chopping it short again.
Luffy was here too. It had been impossible for Ace to miss him fighting in B block. This was going to be fun, he could already tell.
His good feeling only got better when he saw a flash of a gold helmet and a white beard turn through the same tunnel he was going through. Now, Ace had a plan when he came there. Beat everyone, show the world he was alive and challenge Luffy to meet him ‘where the sea meets the sky’. He was pretty confident that, even if Luffy couldn’t figure it out, that clever navigator of his would understand that there was a knock up stream around the next island.
Ace wanted a little bit of privacy for their reunion.
All those plans went out the window the second he realized he was within walking distance of his little brother. His little brother.
God, what was he ever supposed to say to him? He had speeches rehearsed in his head, excuses, apologies, pleas. But they all boiled down to thanks. Thanks that he had already given Luffy, given all of them on his deathbed. Er, death brick?
Ace grimaced and halted at the doorway to the place where the gladiators who won were all gathering. He clenched his hands into fists. Why was this shit so hard?!
It had been easier when he hadn’t known just how badly he’d fucked everything up in the past. It was almost enough to make him long for those days where the past was nothing more than the white wind the blew outside, untouchable, cold and dangerous.
Marco vanished in the crowd, also disguised though his was just some sun glasses and he actually buttoned his shirt up for once. He reappeared right above where Ace was hesitating, head poking out from the bricks that made up the colosseum. The whole place had a weird feel to it. It reminded him of walking on an iced over lake. Stable, with something lurking beneath the surface.
“Hey!” Marco tossed a pebble at Ace’s head. “Get going already.”
Ace rubbed the point of impact, like it had actually hurt, and made a face up at Marco.
“Maybe I don’t want to,” he crossed his arms over his chest childishly.
Marco rolled his sleepy eyes, looking utterly bored with Ace’s antics and indecision. For someone who was so bullheaded all of the time, when Ace’s self esteem issues reared their ugly head the cure was hard to find.
“Just go see him. Talk to him, if nothing else. He doesn’t even need to know your name.”
That was… a good point.
Ace fiddled with the dagger strapped to his hip. He’d taken that, and his hat and his necklace, off of his grave. He didn’t feel quite right without them, now that he knew they had been missing. It was a hollow mourning he hadn’t even known he’d been going through.
“Okay, okay,” Ace took a breath, squared his shoulders, and walked into the darkness.
~
Luffy had a habit of picking up weird people.  Really,   weird people. Ace stared at the guy in the diamond patterned pants and the red jacket. Honestly the most normal thing about him was the green hair. Those  teeth.
Ace made a face.
He hadn’t meant to take so long to catch up to Luffy, but removing the makeup that hid his freckles and then tracking the boy down took more time than he wanted it to. Which was how he had gotten there just in time for the green haired weirdo, Bart or Romeo, he hadn’t been paying attention, to declare that he would win the Flame Flame fruit on Luffy’s behalf.
“That’s pretty bold talk, for a rookie,” Ace chided. The sound was muffled by his scarf. “Maybe I’ll win.”
The green haired man stomped towards him, half slouched over. Even like that he towered easily over Ace. Ace didn’t so much as blink. He hadn’t planned on having audience. On top of this guy, someone else was walking down the hallway towards them.  Ace glanced over. An uncomfortably familiar hat bobbed in the dimly lit tunnel.
The ‘S’ on his arm itched.
“Who do you think you are? Do you know who I am? I’ll win the fruit for him for sure!” he roared, pointing at Luffy. Ace peered around his shoulder and waved. It was all he could do. Even with the goofy disguise the dark brown eyes that squinted at him were unmistakable.
All Ace could manage was a strangled, ‘hey Lu.’.
He cleared his throat, ignoring the way that Luffy’s eyes got just a little bigger. The scar on his chest throbbed painfully. This was Luffy. Luffy, who he’d caused so much pain. He probably would have been better off if they never even me-
  Being alone is worse than any pain.
Ace mentally shook himself. This wasn’t the time for his self deprecation. Luffy needed to know. He needed to know that Ace hadn’t broken his promise. He needed to know he still had one brother left in this world.
“I’m afraid,” the stranger in the top hat said, coming to a halt next to them, “That I can’t let either one of you win the Flame Flame Fruit.” A thin smile slid across the half shadowed face. “Straw Hat Luffy.”
So this guy recognized his little brother too? Ace shifted on his feet, freeing a hand from his pockets. He lay his fingers around the hilt of his dagger. He wasn’t the only one defensive of Luffy, the green guy swaggered over, baring his teeth.
“Who the hell are you supposed to be? Where are you from? You can’t talk to him so casually!”
Ace sighed. Where did Lu find these people? He was a magnet for outcasts, oddballs, and victims of misfortune.
Oh, he was still talking.
“He’s the brother of the legendary Fire Fist Ace! Of course he’ll get the fruit!”
At that, Ace couldn't stop it. He laughed. All eyes snapped to him. He held his hands up, placatingly.
“Ah-ha, don’t mind me. It’s just, that fruit up there is fake. The real ones already been eaten.”
“How can you laugh at his tragedy!” the green man screamed in Ace’s face. Ace put his hand on his cheek and shoved him hard enough to send him into a wall.
The man stumbled away. Ace hadn’t actually hurt him. He was a friend of Luffy’s, after all. “You can’t- He’s going to be King of the Pirates one day!”
Ace smiled. Luffy kept finding these people with so much faith in him. So, weird or not, he could give the green guy his support.
“Oh, I’ve known that since way back,” the strange waved his hand in a gesture that was a little too familiar. There was something about him… Ace could swear he knew him, but the only real resemblance was impossible. So, who was he?
Before Ace’s eyes, the top hat came down. A fluff of blond hair appeared, an ugly scar that Ace recognized as being from fire painted his face. A face that, even twelve years older Ace would recognize anywhere. His throat closed up, squeezing a hiss through his teeth.
That was-
“Sabo.”
Past that he couldn’t hear anything they were saying, the words no more than static in his brain. Ace could only watch, jaw dropped from behind his scarf as Luffy, tears and snot pouring down his face, launched himself at the blond. Sabo was- Sabo was-
Sabo was  alive.
Ace felt like he was a world away, no more than a bystander as Sabo turned his head and gasped for air, being strangled by Luffy’s rubber hug.
“B-but Sabo!”
Luffy’s sobs finally broke through the white noise machine that had replaced his ears. His heart wrenched his chest when Luffy poured his words out.
“I let Ace get killed right in front of me!”
Ace took an unsteady step forwards. He didn’t know if he wanted to hug or beat the shit out of both of them.
“I know,” Sabo’s smile didn’t fade at all. “Even still, I’m so happy you survived. I almost lost both of my brothers. If you had died, I would have been completely alone.”
“No!” the word burst past his lips. Sabo and Luffy looked over at him, one bawling his eyes out, the other happy as composed as he was. Ace gripped his white scarf with shaking fingers. His own eyes were starting to get blurry.
“You- you wouldn’t have been alone,” Ace ripped the scarf away, burning the stupid ski cap right off of his head, a few stray tears slipping down his face. “You didn’t let me die, Lu! I’ve been here the whole time!”
There was a beat of silence and for an instant Ace feared Luffy didn’t believe him. That he’d have to prove it.
Then a long arm slung around his shoulders and Ace found himself being slammed against his brothers. His brothers! Luffy  and Sabo, all three of them. Ace’s knees grew weak and he was left with no choice but to cling to Sabo for support.
“Thank you,” he choked against Sabo’s shoulder. “Thank you! Sabo, Luffy!”
"Thank you for loving me!"
for the character ask, maybe one of ASL? whoever you decide on!
Okay, here goes for Ace Luffy.
favorite thing about them:
Hmm. His voice actor? He looks good in Wano. Definitely buffed up there and that kimono suits him a whole lot. I love his logic. Big Mom doesn’t recognise him in Udon because she’s got amnesia. Luffy thinks it’s because he’s disguised as a samurai. I think the same kind of joke was made at Dressrosa. His art skills and mimicry skills. 😊
Huge things that seem small, like not letting on to that man who was squashed from living in a box that there was no treasure at the top of the mountain, because basically he had sacrificed his life for an empty dream. Literally. Interesting. Given the basic theme of the manga.
least favorite thing about them:
I think my dislike mainly comes from fics rather than anything that consistently exists in canon. This is just my interpretation, but I don’t like that trampling boundaries often gets portrayed as love, and I don’t like the way many fics have him continually referring to people by name rather than using second person singular ‘you’, or other pronouns. In canon, I’m not sure how I feel when he pulls the ‘captain’ card either, but I think I just need to read more and understand context a bit more deeply on that one.
favorite line:
I can only think of the two he always says (Meat and the one about being the King of the Pirates ;-) ). Another person answered this ask and loved his exchange with Shirahoshi, and I thought the line they singled out was nice. Just let me quote it from them (I’m sure it was important to someone else too. I can see why). @minyaii
one piece chapter 615, when shirahoshi and luffy are only going on a walk; shirahoshi asks him, “is this what you call an adventure?”
and luffy laughs and responds, “yeah, if your heart is beating fast, then it’s an adventure!”
brOTP: Luffy and his crew. OTP:
I don’t really ship Luff. He’s pretty young in canon, so around his age is preferred by me if he’s with anyone. ZoLu makes the most sense.
I’ll add this from my Kid post: KidLu: I really like the idea of two egotistical bastards competing with each other until the finish line. When they’re roly-poly balls at Udon from eating too much kibi-dango, I love the absurdity.
And from my Usopp character thing...Lusopp is really sweet. I’ve read some good stuff.
I can see SanLu happening, and I’ve read some good LuNami, particularly if both characters are aged up a bit and it’s a modern day AU.
nOTP: I don’t like Law///Lu. I know a lot of folk do, and there are a heap of good stories out there, but it just doesn’t work for me. The age difference doesn’t work for me, and it’s more so just that Luffy’s really young, not so much the number of years. Other than that, even the crack ships can work. It depends on the writer’s skill.
I’m so-so on any ASL ships. If they meet as adults and not related, and not having grown up together as family I don’t mind it. But, y’know, it’s fanfiction, and there’s some well-written stuff out there, and good artwork.
random headcanon:
I don’t have any for Luffy, but I do love a feral Luffy and feral ASL AU, or even tying into canon. I like dark Luffy occasionally  in fanfics or art, but keep him happy in canon.
unpopular opinion: That Luffy’s selfish. But that’s a given and canon, right? And not all the time. He doesn’t have to be a saint.  The story wouldn’t go anywhere without Luffy rushing into any situation.
Oh, also, I don’t really like fight scenes that much, so even though I’m sure Luffy’s are awesome, I’m usually hoping for them to end a whole lot quicker than they usually do. But I do like the humour that’s woven into them.
song i associate with them:
I don’t have one for Luffy. I liked the song he sang while he raced off through Wano. That was a song, wasn’t it? Feral child and so some kind of slightly askew nursery rhyme or fairy tale would suit him. I was gonna say the darker ones, but I actually just think the silly and soft ones.
favorite picture of them:
I’ll link once I post.
Tumblr media
But actually, he’s looking good in canon at the moment, and the colour spreads when he’s in his gangster gear or the trippy dj booth is pretty cool. Also just when he’s vibrantly alive.
Thanks for the ask. Law, Tashigi, Usopp, Zoro, Luffy and Kid are completed!  Marco and Chopper are lined up.
Ask away:
Happy Belated Birthday! Hope it was fun! If you're looking for a request, how about Brook and Nami for "Birthday Card"?
Here you are, hun! :3 I hope you enjoy it!
A Straw Hat Birthday Party
“Dearly beloved, we are all gathered here today to commemorate a very special occasion,” Sanji announced dramatically as he stood at the head of the kitchen table, held tilted back and his hand over his heart in the epitome of a regal air. Nami jumped slightly as he slammed his hand down on the table and pointed at her with the other, hearts beating wildly in his eyes. “Nami-swan’s birthday~” Nami rolled her eyes nearly into the back of her head at the ridiculousness of it; her birthday was a month ago, in July, one month before they had reconvened in Sabaody Archipelago and set out to Fishman Island. They had surfaced this morning and were currently sailing onwards in search of another sort of business for Luffy to poke his nose into, and they had all been very confused when Sanji had suddenly summoned them for a premise other than lunch.
“Sanji, it’s been over a month since my birthday- and technically, almost all of us have had two birthdays since we were separated, so is it really fair to celebrate only mine?” she pointed out with a wave of her hand. Not that she was unappreciative of the sentiment- it was actually really nice that Sanji had committed her birthday to memory, though not entirely unexpected- but it didn’t sit well with her to leave everyone out. Sanji instantly deflated to sink into a chair, grumbling and lighting up a cigarette to sulk. “Look, all I’m saying is, maybe we should have like a joint birthday party for everyone!” she suggested. She didn’t want to ruin all his fun.
“Oooooooh! That sounds like so much fuuuuuuun!” Luffy cried and filled the air with the happy clacking of the soles of his flip-flops slapping together. “Let’s do it, Sanji! Please? Please?” Sanji took a long drag of his cigarette before cocking his head to the side, blowing the plume of smoke through his mouth and nose.
“Nnh, it doesn’t sound too terrible an idea. I could make a hell of a tiered cake with everyone’s favorites…” he began to mumble to himself as he unconsciously rolled up his sleeves and got up to begin rooting around his kitchen for various supplies. Luffy crowed ecstatically and flung his rubbery arms into the air before stretching out his head across the table to where Usopp and Franky were sitting together to begin yelling at them about party decorations. Chopper got up and ran across the table to Robin bleating about scrounging up small little presents for everybody, to which the woman smiled and responded calmly that she was sure they could find something. This led to a slew of construction paper, scissors, glue, and various other art articles from Usopp’s cache being slung across the table to create birthday cards, while Usopp, Franky, and Sanji worked around them on their respective duties. Luffy was attempting to be helpful but kept letting the balloons loose to fly around because he thought it was funny, and Zoro decided it wasn’t worth all the effort and was sleeping on the floor. It was absolute chaos, but somehow Nami had wrangled in the mania just a bit to provide a menial amount of order; she had divvied up the birthday card assignments between herself, Brook, and Chopper. Robin was using her Devil Fruit power to help out in various ways and was lounged back beside Chopper as he sat down on the table in front of her coloring with some crayons.
“Nami? What do you think of this? Yohohohoho!” Brook chortled beside her and held up his card for him to critique his handiwork. Nami instantly grimaced; she should have known better than to ask him to make a card for her. He had drawn an actually cute-looking pair of panties on the front with the simple phrase “It’s your birthday! Show me your panties!”
“Brook, come on, take this seriously!” she tutted and waggled her finger at him. “It may seem like everyone is taking this lightly, but look at how hard everyone is working for all our sakes!” she said with a gesture around the room. Sanji was slaving over a large bowl whisking frosting into oblivion while an automatic mixer churned his cake batter into creamy goodness; Usopp and Franky were kneeled on the floor painting a very elaborate and tasteful banner; and Luffy was actually getting serious enough to actually begin tying the balloons together into arrangements. Brook’s calcified face frowned and he looked down at the card, his bony eyebrows narrowed in concentration.
“I see… I apologize, Nami. I haven’t celebrated my birthday in fifty years. I suppose I forgot how much it meant to others.” Nami’s heart immediately twisted into contorted guilt. She hadn’t meant to upset him! Gosh, darn it, now she had to cheer him up, dammit. The skeleton man was obviously blue. Nami smiled sweetly and reached up to pat his bushy afro.
“Don’t sweat it, okay? I didn’t mean to be harsh! Look, all I meant was that I would rather you pour your heart and soul into it! You don’t need my approval. Do your best!” she said with a nervous edge to her smile. Would it work? God, she couldn’t upset anybody on their joint birthday celebration! Luckily enough, Brook instantly brightened and bent over his card, pencil flying with renewed gusto. Nami breathed a small sigh of relief and went back to working on her own birthday cards.
~~~~~~~~~~
Considering it was a spur-of-the-moment thing, their little joint birthday celebration was underway right as the sun began to sink towards the endless horizon. They had moved their party to the spacious dining room; the birthday banner was strung across the wall, splashed with brilliant color and bubbly font that simply screamed celebratory cheer. Balloons were placed all about, bouncing along the floor and bobbing along the ceiling, and tied in great bunches at each corner of the room. Sanji’s work of art, the tiered cake with sections catering to each crew member’s taste, was situated on the middle of the table which was draped in white tablecloth. Chopper eagerly went about delivering the cards to their respective recipients before clambering up into his seat between Robin and Nami, drooling as he held a fork and knife and eyed the beautiful cake.
“Carve it up, Sanji, I’m starving!” Luffy whined in a wheedling voice as he banged his fists on the table impatiently. Sanji shook his golden bangs from his face with a snort of derision and a glare that warned “don’t piss off the man with the massive cake knife.”
“Keep it up and you’ll get yours last!” he snapped. Luffy did not take kindly to that, melting into a puddle against the table, but obediently ceased all impatient grumbling while Sanji set to cutting up the cake and delivering pieces around. Nami and Robin got theirs first, of course, but she patiently waited for everyone to get theirs before trying it; oh, but it was so hard to wait, because it seemed simply delectable! It was a tangerine sponge cake with lemon-orange whipped frosting and flecks of strawberry to add some conflicting tang. Nami’s mouth began to water just staring at it, and she practically dove into it when Sanji announced that they could. The icing was simply divine, melting into tasty sugar on her tongue, and the cake was the perfect level of moist and had an incredible texture.
“Sanji! This cake is immaculate!” she cried with a mouthful of her second piece.
“Ah! Only the best for you, Nami-swaaaaaaaan~!” Sanji trilled while pirouetting on the table so fast that she could imagine him little beating pink hearts all over the place.
“Cards! Let’s read the cards now!” Chopper begged while holding his up over his head. They eagerly complied and began reading off the little messages in the cards; it was pretty obvious who wrote who’s. Choppers all had some iteration of “Happy birthday, you bastard!” but also featured adorable little renditions of the tiny reindeer with whoever the card’s recipient was; they were so charming and child-like that Nami’s heart melted just looking at the drawings. It was clear that he put his heart and soul into them. Of course, he grew very bashful with all the gratuitous remarks and tried to laugh it off, but the brilliant grin on his furry face was plenty evidence that he was overjoyed at his handiwork’s reception.
Comparably, Nami’s cards were a bit simpler and had an almost store-bought craftsmanship to them, decorated with floral patterns and containing simple yet heartfelt personalized notes to the recipient. Sanji of course was one of them and he pirouetted so hard that he activated his Diable Jambe, warbling like a deranged songbird about how it would be an artifact that he would treasure for all time. Zoro was smiling wryly because she had made a pretty cheeky comment about his less-than-healthy rate of alcohol consumption.
Finally, it was time to get to Brook’s cards. The outside was unassuming, scrawled with wave patterns, but when she opened it she was bewildered to find that it contained no message or inscription of any kind. She looked up to Luffy and Usopp’s confused expressions to find that theirs suffered an identical issue. Before any of them could inquire, Brook cleared his non-existent throat and stood up to his full towering height, violin in hand.
“I am afraid that I struggled quite a bit in what to put in your cards. Ultimately I realized that I have far too much to say, yohohohoho, so hear it is in song instead!” He flipped the violin about to tuck it beneath his chin before drawing the thin instrument across the taut strings, producing a melodic wave of sound. Nami leaned her cheek into her hand with a small smile; his voice really was amazingly pleasing to the ear, and it seemed that he really had taken her advice to heart. There was nothing that Brook put more heart and soul into than his music. He sang about Usopp first, chronicling his bravery and adventurous soul, moving the elated Usopp to tears (which really wasn’t that hard considering he cried over almost everything). He sang about Luffy next, commending his indomitable spirit and good-naturedness, and though he had no idea what the words were, the straw hat-wearing captain hopped up onto the table and began dancing around singing random notes. Usopp soon jumped up with him and they linked arms, stomping in a circle. The rest of the crew found themselves clapping along, although Sanji snapped at them that it was their funeral if they ruined his cake.
Finally, Brook arrived at his verse for Nami. It was a song of the wind and the sea and tangerines and the navigator’s strong will. Nami felt like he plucked the strings of her heart rather than those of the violin, because she was just so moved by it. She leaned back in her chair while giving Brook a serene, warm smile, and he tossed her a wink while he continued to sing his birthday card for the three of them.
See, Brook? It’s not hard at all- not when you love us as much as you do. Sometimes you just have to put in words a little differently, huh? She thought contentedly as she tapped her foot along to the raucous beat. Nami couldn’t have asked for a more thoughtful birthday card than that.
