Happy Valentine's Day @artsy-azure ! Here's your gift for the @milgram-valentines-exchange 💖
Fuuta x Minato (oc) ~ The first section takes place right after his T2 interrogation, and then skips ahead to a tiny post-milgram scene :3 I hope you enjoy!
Tumblr media
Fuuta thought he would drown. Not sink into water or anything like that; he was worried the voices filling his mind would completely suffocate him. There were too many of them. Too many people, all of them knowing every dark corner of his mind, and shouting into it. It should have been impossible for one voice – one softer than all the rest – to reach him.
Then again, everything about that voice should have been impossible.
“Fuuta… Hey, Fuuta… Are you alright?”
He blinked. He scrambled over to the nearest wall. There were no visible openings in the cell, not a single imperfection across any of the surfaces, yet Milgram’s intercom system functioned just fine. Most days it would just deliver the ear-rattling bell to tell him the time. On bad days, it carried Es’ summons to the interrogation room for his extraction. On worse days, it carried Es’ summons to the courtroom for his verdict.
On the very best days, it would bring him the voice of Hoshizawa Minato.
(Though, seeing as he had just returned from a catastrophic extraction, he wasn’t sure what type of day it was yet.)
He tore his attention away from the chorus of judgements and insults. He pressed his shoulder against the wall, still unsure where the sound was coming from, but knowing it was nearby.
“I’m here,” he said, hushed. More than anything he wanted to yell and scream, but he would never risk it, now. Minato had gone through a hell of a lot to break into Milgram’s systems, and he wouldn’t let his big mouth ruin all that. It had already ruined just about everything else.
“How are you holding up?”
Fuuta pressed his lips together. “Any news on getting us out of here?” was all he said.
Hundreds of miles away (or perhaps next door – neither of them could really know), Minato’s fingers adjusted his headset.
“I’m still working on it. These things take time.”
“I’m definitely gonna need it after today.”
“Your interrogation… I know.”
Fuuta pulled his hood down tighter, tufts of ginger hair ruffling underneath. “How much did you see?”
Minato’s eyes flicked over to another monitor. It displayed the files he’d gained access to a few hours prior. It would crush Fuuta to hear about yet another person peeking into his personal moments, so he opted for a non-answer.
“I don’t have cameras. I don’t see much at all.”
“Tch, I’m not a damn idiot, I know that! I meant, how much did you hear?”
“...Everything.”
Fuuta squeezed his eye shut. He bit a curse back. There came silence.
Minato actually double checked some of his monitors, making sure they hadn’t been disconnected.
“So then, you know,” Fuuta said at last. “There’s no fucking way I’m getting forgiven this time around.”
“You can’t be so sure. The–”
“No one in their right mind would forgive me after that.” He winced, remembering his harsh cries at the end of the interrogation. What kind of accused murderer shouted “I’ll kill you” as their plea of innocence? When he wasn’t running his mouth with threats, he’d been pleading with Es like some kind of coward. And Minato has heard all of it. Fuuta could only imagine the horrors that the extraction held. Who could forgive him after they saw his anger, or worse, his pleasure? Who could ever look kindly on someone like that?
“I would.”
Fuuta’s eyes widened. He let himself sink further into the wall. A strangled laugh escaped him. He let his head hang down. No matter how much he wanted to protest, Minato was as honest as they come. If he said he forgave Fuuta, he meant it.
“Yeah, like I said, no one in their right mind.”
Minato cracked a smile.
“You don’t think I’m in my right mind?”
Fuuta scoffed. “You post pictures of clothes for a living. And in your free time, you plan impossible jailbreaks for murderers. Doesn’t sound quite sane to me.”
“Aw, come on. Do you think it’s impossible?”
Minato was still smirking, ready for some more of their typical back and forth. Fuuta surprised him by pausing.
“Well, it should be impossible. But…”
They’d been speaking for some time now. Whether it was quick comments when Es wasn’t around or long conversations into the night. Fuuta had seen many sides of him, and knew that he had what it took. He wasn’t like the vast majority of internet personalities – weak or needy or inexperienced. He’d proved himself time and time again. If anyone could pull this off, it would be Minato.
“If it’s you… there’s a chance.”
“You’ve got that right. You can count on me, alright?”
Fuuta took a deep breath. The tightness of the uniform and the bandages seemed to lessen.
“Although,” Minato put on a falsely serious voice, “we’re gonna have a long talk when you get out… about that yellow jacket you own.”
“Haaah? What’s wrong with my jacket?’
“There are a hundred stylish ways to wear it and that was not one.”
“The fuck does that mean?”
“You’ll be grateful when someone who ‘posts pictures of clothes for a living’ helps with your wardrobe.”
Fuuta could feel his chest release even more. Minato spoke so easily about the future, as if it were something real and waiting for him.
“As if I’d let you touch any of my outfits.”
“As if you could stop me!”
He took another breath. He smiled. No drowning today.
---
After checking the clock fourteen times, Fuuta thought once more couldn’t hurt. It was still two minutes to noon, just like the last few times he’d checked. His frequent checking hadn’t brought the train to the station any faster.
Minato had told him that he was safe. He’d said this meeting wasn’t that big of a risk. The dust had settled. He just had to relax.
The announcement overhead signaled the next stop was his. It screeched into the station, a slight murmur rising as the doors opened onto a platform of moving people.
Fuuta lowered his head. His eyepatch would surely draw attention to himself, so he kept his hood down and his mask up. He just needed to make it to the station entrance.
He made his way around stiff businessmen and sticky children. He tried to shuffle around a young man, but he seemed to step further into Fuuta’s path. Giving the stranger a quick glance, he started to mumble something to squeeze past.
“Fuuta,” the man said, gaping in surprise. “It’s me.”
He inhaled sharply.
It was only three words, but it was enough to recognize his voice from a thousand conversations.
Fuuta’s eye widened as he took Minato in. It was strange to finally see his face. Finally, here was the person he’d spent hours talking to. The person he’d spent days passing the time with. The person he’d spent nights falling for. Here was the one who had saved his life, in more ways than he could count.
His first observation was, fuck, this guy is way outta my league. His next was, he’s shorter than I was expecting. Then, gah, I’m probably shorter than he was expecting. He was in the middle of realizing, he has the nicest smile I think I’ve ever seen, when Minato crushed him in a hug.
Fuuta returned the embrace. His arms tightened around Minato. He was real. He was here. Fuuta’s hands grasped at his clothes and his hair. He was unable to control a laugh bubbling up inside of him.
“You did it. My god, you did it.”
He breathed into Minato’s shoulder. His chest shook with some laughter, some tears.
For a moment wondered if people would notice the heartfelt reunion outside of the train, then he realized he didn’t care in the slightest.
Minato was laughing along with him in that beautiful, familiar voice of his. No more crackling speakers or hidden intercoms – he spoke right into his ear, hair tickling his cheek. Fuuta could have stayed forever in his arms, just like that. All that mattered was he felt safe. At last, he felt happy.
Talk about impossible.

You got out of bed as quietly as possible to go and brush your teeth, but you heard Gyutaro call out to you.
"Where are you going?" You turned around to face him. He was now sitting up in bed and looking at you. "I'm going to brush my teeth." You replied. "Can't we just stay in bed all day?" He asked. "Gyutaro, we did that yesterday. You need to get out of bed." Gyutaro sulked. "Can't we just stay a little longer...?" He asked hopefully. "Well, just a little while longer won't hurt." You walked over to the bed and sat next to Gyutaro. Gyutaro pulled you a little bit closer and wrapped his arms around you. You shuffled a little bit and managed to wrap your arms around him. Rating: M Pairing: Robin/Nancy Word Count: 3,231 Summary: She hadn’t even been in Hawkins for a full twenty-four hours and she already had a gun pulled on her. At least whatever was going on in this stupid town would keep her on her toes.
“Turn around slowly.”
A woman. Something about that voice triggered a distant memory in her mind that she couldn’t quite place. Robin raised her hands by her head to show the assailant that she wasn’t armed, at least not yet, and slowly turned to face the person who snuck up on her.
As her eyes locked onto icy blue orbs, the distant memory hit her full force.
A dive bar in Paris. Lilac and vanilla. A kiss that left her breathless, and a contact that she’d never forget.
or Spy AU where Robin is a French intelligence agent and Nancy is a rogue CIA agent, and together they work to unveil the secrets hidden in Hawkins.
Hawkins, Indiana 1984
Robin felt like the universe was playing a sick joke on her. She spent all of her childhood years wanting to leave America, choosing to travel the world as soon as she graduated and not stepping foot back in the States unless absolutely necessary, and now she was forced to be on an assignment in the middle of fucking nowhere for an indefinite period of time. What was DGSE doing getting involved in American affairs anyways?
She huffed in frustration as her thoughts continued to spiral. She wasn’t paid to ask questions, she was paid to get the job done, and that’s exactly what she planned to do. With time the pieces would inevitably fall into place on why the Direction générale de la Sécurité extérieure was getting involved in America’s problems. Robin’s only goal was to get this job done as quickly as possible so she could leave this dumpster fire of a country and return to the life she had grown accustomed to.
A lot of strange events were occurring in the small town of Hawkins, so strange that it piqued the interest of France, and Robin wouldn’t be surprised if other countries took a particular interest in these cases as well. Disappearances, deaths, and rumors of supernatural creatures that were yet to be proven true, or perhaps America was just doing a really good job at covering their tracks to hide their mistakes from the rest of the world. Not for the first time, the French intelligence agent questioned why this suddenly became her problem.
Robin landed in Indiana the night before and spent the majority of her time looking over the very sparse case files she had been given, trying to pinpoint where she should start. She was staying in a hotel just a few miles out of town because there was nowhere in Hawkins that lived up to her standard of living. Call her materialistic, but she worked hard to drag herself out of a life of poverty and make a name for herself, even though most of the people she was acquainted with didn’t actually know her real name. Truthfully, they didn’t know her much at all.
As a child, Robin was a terrible liar; her face turning beet red whenever she was dishonest to her mother or any authoritative figure. When she turned thirteen and realized she was a lesbian, hiding who she was and lying became second nature. Robin hid from friends, classmates, teachers, her parents, and worst of all, for too long, she hid from herself. Even now, she had taken on different personalities and appearances for the sake of getting the job done, so much so that if she dug deep within herself, she would be totally unrecognizable.
Sometimes it bothered her to the point where she thought about truly leaving it all behind. She certainly had enough money and fake passports and aliases to live under the radar for the rest of her life, but in the end, she’d still be running away in a sense, and she was so tired of running. Robin had been doing this for so long that she didn’t know how to just stop. So, she stayed and continued to play this game where she really didn’t know what it would take to finally win and be done with it all. Staying is what brought her to where she was now, in the shithole town of Hawkins.
Looking over the case files, she saw a disappearance that felt as good a place as any to start. A sixteen-year-old girl who mysteriously went missing in ‘83, presumably dead, but no body had ever been recovered. Robin knew the odds of finding any evidence of the disappearance at this point was slim to none, but she had to start somewhere.
Barbara Holland. Born September 13th, 1967. Sophomore in high school. Straight A student. Last seen at a party at the Harrington residence. No known eyewitnesses to her disappearance.
It didn’t take long for Robin to get to the Harrington residence, and she hoped that it being 11am on a Tuesday meant that nobody would be around so she could get a closer look at the premises. She opted to take a cab from her hotel and was dropped off a few blocks away from the house. Sticking to the woods around the home, she scoped out the perimeter of the yard, looking for all possible entry points.
After scouting the area for fifteen minutes and confirming nobody was home, Robin was about to make her way into the backyard where there was a large in-ground pool and some outdoor chaise lounges. Before she could even take a step, she heard a twig snap behind her and immediately felt the cool barrel of a gun pressed against the back of her head.
Not a lot of things were able to sneak up on her, so she knew that whoever she was dealing with would absolutely put up a good fight. She hadn’t even been in Hawkins for a full twenty-four hours and she already had a gun pulled on her.
“Fox?”
Paris, France 1980
Robin wasn’t sure why she was told to meet her contact in this shitty dive bar of all places. The music was too loud, there were too many people that smelled of booze and sweat, and the lights were too bright. It was overwhelming for someone like herself who had sensory problems, but she’s learned to hide her anxiety well in her line of work.
She found the quietest spot near the bar and ordered a Jack and Coke. Her back was against the sticky countertop as she sipped the amber liquid that did nothing to quell her nerves, watching the writhing bodies on the small dance floor. She scanned the room for who could potentially be her contact, but all she saw were wasted twenty-year-olds who were probably under the influence of more than just alcohol.
Robin was used to feeling out of place since she was a child, never quite able to fit in no matter how hard she tried to stuff herself inside of a box, and now was no different. Even in her casual clothes, she felt far too overdressed, considering everyone in this bar was wearing very little clothing. She was donning a striped tan button-up tucked into dark grey high-waisted pants that were cuffed above her ankles to show off her black hightop converse. The look was finished off with a light grey blazer with the sleeves rolled up and a tie to match, which she was slightly regretting wearing now due to the stuffiness of the bar.
Suddenly, there was another presence on Robin’s right side that she hadn’t noticed until they invaded her personal space. She directed her attention over and immediately felt all the air get knocked from her lungs at the sight of the woman next to her.
The woman had her brunette locks pulled back into a ponytail with her bangs tucked behind her ears, exposing her sharp jawline. She wore a white, long-sleeved blouse that flared at the wrists tucked into a black skirt paired with a matching black vest. The outfit was completed with black knee-high boots and a little red purse that matched the color of the woman’s lipstick. She stood a few inches shorter than Robin, but there was something about the confidence the woman exuded that left the taller woman’s mouth dry. She was the most beautiful woman Robin had ever seen, and anyone who knew her would know that pretty girls made her a nervous wreck.
“Bonjour,” the woman greeted her with a sly smirk and a surprisingly good French accent, but Robin had spent enough time in France to pinpoint tourists from an initial greeting. While she knew she was supposed to be meeting an American CIA agent, and out of all the people in this shitty bar, this woman seemed to be the only person who had the potential to be her contact, she couldn’t be sure quite yet.
“Bonjour, Américain,” Robin greeted, twisting her body so she fully faced her newest companion of the evening. Her left forearm rested against the bar countertop as she held onto her beverage.
“How could you tell that I’m an American?” The shorter woman asked. One of her brows quirked up in a challenge, and the smirk never dropped from her lips.
“Your accent is good, but it could still use a little bit of work.”
To Robin’s surprise, that earned a laugh from the fellow American, and she couldn’t stop herself from chuckling as well. Even if this wasn’t who she was supposed to be meeting, she would indulge in the distraction for a little bit before returning to the task at hand.
“How did you get so good at your accent?”
“I’ve always had a knack for picking up on languages,” Robin shrugged nonchalantly. She was fluent in eight languages and constantly worked on learning more. Her knowledge of languages procured her with valuable intel without lifting a finger, and that’s why she was one of the best in her line of work.
“You must be very good with your mouth, then.”
She felt heat rise to her cheeks from the comment that she hoped would go unnoticed. The American stepped more into her personal space, reaching out to fiddle with the end of her tie. Lilac and vanilla filled her senses as nothing but a couple of inches separated the two, and the scent was absolutely intoxicating to Robin. She could now see the woman had icy blue eyes from their close proximity. They were calculated, powerful, dangerous .
“What brings you to a place like this, anyways?” Robin asked, bringing her now mostly melted beverage to her lips to try to give her the confidence she didn’t actually possess.
“A little birdie told me about this place.”
Bingo.
That was the confirmation she needed to confirm this was, in fact, her contact.
“I didn’t think foxes got along well with birdies.”
“I can make exceptions sometimes, Birdie,” Fox purred, tugging on Robin’s tie to close the small gap between them.
To Robin’s surprise and absolute delight, Fox was kissing her, and who could really blame her for melting into the kiss. Her hands found Fox’s slim waist, pulling her impossibly closer. There was nothing shy about it, all teeth and tongue and passion , as if they had done this a million times before. They appeared to just be another couple showing some PDA, but as Fox’s hand slid from Robin’s tie deeper into her blazer, she felt the weight of a tape recorder slip into her inner pocket.
Fox didn’t pull away from their kiss once the job was done. Her hands moved lower, down to Robin’s waist, and it wasn’t until her hand brushed against the small pistol hidden under the blazer that she pulled away slightly. Her breath brushed against Robin’s lips, and those icy blue eyes were hooded with unconcealed desire, which Robin knew was probably mirrored in her own eyes.
“What’s that you’ve got packing down there?” Fox whispered against Robin’s lips.
“Would you like to find out?” The taller woman grinned, knowing that this was a very slippery slope they were both going down, but she couldn’t find it in herself to care.
“I absolutely would, but we’ll have to raincheck,” Fox sighed, planting one last kiss on Robin’s lips before pulling away from the embrace. “I hope to see you again sometime, Birdie.”
With that said, Fox turned and exited the shitty dive bar, leaving Robin to question whether that encounter even happened or if it had been a figment of her imagination. The only proof she had that it did, was the tape recorder tucked away in her pocket and the lingering scent of lilac and vanilla left on her clothes for the rest of the night.
Hawkins, Indiana 1984
“Birdie?” The woman that Robin had embarrassingly never been able to get off her mind flashed that same smirk she had four years prior, lowering the gun that had previously been aimed at Robin’s face.
Fox looked a little different than the last time Robin had seen her. Her straight hair now fell in beautiful curls down to her shoulders. Her face was bare of any makeup, but she still was just as beautiful as the one and only time they had ever come into contact. Her eyes were just as calculated and dangerous, but they had dark circles under them, similar to Robin’s own.
“What are you doing here?” Robin questioned, her hands dropping back down to her sides now that a gun wasn’t pointed at her. It was a stupid thing to ask, but her brain wasn’t able to catch up with the events currently unfolding. She never thought she would see Fox again, and the fact that she was standing directly in front of the taller woman was slightly overwhelming.
“I could ask you the same thing,” Fox’s smirk morphed into a full-fledged grin. “What’s a DGSE agent doing across the pond?”
“Probably the opposite of what you’re doing here,” Robin vaguely responded. As much as she was thrilled to see Fox again, she knew in a situation like this they were highly unlikely to be working for the same reasons, and as much as Robin didn’t want to fight the other woman, she wasn’t going to let the CIA agent stop her from doing what she came here to do. “I’m assuming you’re here to stop me from unveiling whatever secrets the CIA has been hiding from the rest of the world.”
“I think we’re actually here for the same reason.”
That piqued Robin’s interest, glad it appeared like she wasn’t going to have to fight her way out of this situation. As confident as Robin was in her skills, she knew that Fox would be a challenging adversary just from the simple fact that twice now she had been able to sneak up on Robin without realizing her presence.
“You’ve gone rogue?” Robin asked, her brows furrowed in confusion as she tried to get a read on the other woman.
Was this a ploy to lower the DGSE agent’s guard, or was Fox being truthful? It was hard to tell in their line of work. Lies were easier to fall from their lips than the truth. Robin had never trusted anyone, no matter how long she had worked with someone. Everyone was playing their own game and would be quick to stab whoever they needed to in the back to get the tiniest step ahead. She was guilty of it herself at times. It’s one of the reasons why Robin preferred to work in solitude, only utilizing contacts periodically. The less anyone knew about her, the better.
“I’m a truth seeker, Birdie,” Fox said in lieu of an answer to the actual question. “And I can tell you, whatever is going on here wouldn’t just tip the scales, but completely destroy them.”
“What is that even supposed to mean?”
“Come back with me to my hotel room and I can explain more there. I could use the help with this. My car is parked a few blocks away,” Fox again evaded Robin’s line of questioning. “You’re wasting your time here, anyways. I already scouted the area before you arrived and didn’t find anything that would help find that girl.”
“You expect me to just take your word for it?” Robin huffed in frustration. She was mostly annoyed with herself by how quickly she wanted to fold for this woman and follow her along.
Something about the CIA agent made her feel as though she was balancing on a tightrope, and one wrong move would send her toppling down to her death. But in the same token, trusting Fox could be mutually beneficial for both of them. They could both get the answers they wanted, and Robin could leave all this behind her sooner rather than later.
“If you want to go check it out, then by all means, go for it. I won’t stop you. But I’m sure I have better intel I can give you than you’ll find here,” Fox challenged, that ever-present smirk on her lips that was beginning to irk Robin, but also made her knees a little weak at the sight of it.
“Why do you need my help? You don’t have any American friends to help you with this?”
Fox’s expression turned serious, losing the challenging playfulness that seemed to always be present in the couple of encounters Robin had with her. The French intelligence agent was again struck by the tired look in Fox’s eyes, like the powers that be had used her too much until she had nothing left to give. It wasn’t dissimilar to how Robin felt. There were too many assignments, too much death, too many lies. Even the strongest-willed people would break under this corrupt system, and it seemed as though both of them were nearing their breaking point.
“I’m done being a pawn. I’m done playing this fucked up game,” Fox sighed, running the hand that wasn’t holding the pistol through her curls. “This is my last mission, under nobody’s authority but my own. The truth needs to come out, or else everyone will suffer.”
Robin held eye contact with the rogue agent, not wanting to admit defeat quite yet, but she couldn’t say it wasn’t an enticing offer. Something about what Fox said made Robin feel as though she could trust her, as dangerous of a thought that was. Plus, Robin didn’t really have any desire to snoop around a wealthy family’s home without the promise of actually finding something worth her while. She silently prayed to whatever higher powers were out there that this decision wasn’t going to turn around and bite her in the ass.
“Lead the way, Princess.”
“I will, only if you promise to never call me that again.”
Robin couldn’t stop the chuckle that escaped her lips at the glare shot in her direction. She was glad that she at least managed to get a little under the other woman’s skin, too.
“What shall I call you, then?”
“Nancy. Nancy Wheeler. And you?”
Robin hadn’t told anyone her real name since she became a DGSE agent, always having a different alias for each mission. But she had a feeling the name the CIA agent just gave to her was, in fact, her real name. If whatever they were doing was going to work, if Nancy could show her enough trust to disclose that information to her, then she would have to do the same.
“My name is Robin Buckley.”

1, 17, and 18 - but for SOBR specifically!
AO3 Wrapped Questions
1. How many words have you written this year?
Including the Scamp fic I never wound up finishing (maybe I'll come back to that some day...), with all my fics and SOBR together, I wrote 183,537 words this year! Of course, a vast majority of that is by way of SOBR, which was 143,200 words exactly. But 40,000 words across a few fanfics? Pretty good, still.
17. Your favorite character to write this year?
I think Beau is an absolute fucking delight to write. I really enjoyed writing everyone in SOBR, I think they're all fun and unique in their own ways with what they bring to the table, but Beau's perspective is really fun. It is a treat to watch this man do insane mental gymnastics all the damn time and refuse to take responsibility for himself at all, lol.
His ability to just be so damn likable no matter what he does is so wonderful. He's so damn funny, he's cringefail as hell, and I'm obsessed with him, I think that's obvious KRKFN he's just fun! And good! And he sucks so much!!!!!
I wish I had something more meaningful to say about him, but I really do just love that guy. I think he's really complex, a sympathetic, likable character that you can also recognize is just kinda shitty sometimes and is the source of a lot of his own pain. It almost feels like perpetual dramatic irony with him, like it's so obvious to the audience, but he's blind to his own problems.
It's also what makes him the prime candidate for tragedy as well. It should be so simple for him to be okay, but it's not. And then by the time he finally realizes anything, it's too damn late. He also just plays off of other characters really well, so character interactions with Beau are always a treat.
Close second is Vincent. I really, really like writing Vincent as well, just because his perspective is an excellent alternative to Beau's. So many similar flaws despite being wildly different men personality-wise. It's about the PARALLELS. There's just something about him that's really fun to write, too, but I can't put my finger on it. I just find it very fun, and am grateful that a lot of act 3 is from his perspective. He's the more calm, rational perspective, though I think with time, it becomes pretty clear he doesn't have as good a grip on things as he seems.
18. The character that gave you the most trouble writing this year?
Abe, because I kept forgetting about him KRJKFN LIKE OK I didn't forget about him too much, but the more time that passed, the less important he became to me. I feel like he kinda starts taking more of a backseat in the later chapters, though I think it works just fine. Beau isn't home very much, and if he is, I doubt he wants to be around Abe. Beau is isolating himself from everyone-- from Abe intentionally, and from Vincent because Vincent is angry with him.
I think he's also in SOBR enough for his eventual death to still be effective, but I think he's in SOBR a lot less than I thought he'd be. At the very, very earliest concept stages when I began work on the project in January, Vincent didn't even exist, so it was supposed to just be Beau and Abe playing off of each other the whole time. Didn't last more than a day or so before I had to add another member of the group just so there'd be someone for Beau to interact with after Abe died (which Beau killing him was the very first scene ever conceived for SOBR btw lol).
I just had a hard time slotting him into the later stuff bcs Beau just does not spend very much time in Brittlebone after a certain point, and no one else is really friends with Abe except for Vince, who would never hang out with Abe one-on-one anyways. So he was tough to work with, but I think I made out alright with him.
I think I also had trouble with Casey-- for a couple of different reasons. Casey was rough at first because I had no idea how to characterize him. Like, I just could NOT figure out who he was going to be; shit, I couldn't even figure out what the fuck I wanted him to look like. He was based on Paul, alright, but obviously I don't want any of the SOBR cast to just be a Tazmily villager reskinned, whether visually or personality-wise.
I didn't know where to take his character until I wrote that chapter where Beau tags along with Jerome, collecting fines around town and Casey just came in guns a-blazin' with this visceral hatred of Beau out of fuckall nowhere. After that, I had him dead to rights as this bitter, depressed little dude, and I thought that was a fun personality to play off of with Jerome's cocky, upbeat attitude and Luis's contrasting kindness and gentleness-- and Beau's... Beauness KRJHFD
I really like Casey, but the other challenge with writing him is that because he's a super quiet and standoffish character that he often just blends into the background. Typically, Jerome or Luis dominate the scenes he's in, so he's just not very prominent unless he's in a solo interaction with somebody. I did not show as much of him as I wanted, though I don't think his character is wasted. He, like Abe, has his part to play and the part he does play works well. He also gets more time to shine in act 3 anyhow.

Rating: M Pairing: Robin/Nancy Word Count: 2,628 Summary: She hadn’t even been in Hawkins for a full twenty-four hours and she already had a gun pulled on her.
The car ride to the hotel was quiet. Nancy drove a brand new red ‘84 Mercedes Benz 380SL Roadster. Not a very discreet vehicle, but Robin had to admit it was nice to have the top down and the warm wind in her hair as they drove out of Hawkins. Robin checked the mirrors the whole ride to ensure nobody was following them, much to Nancy’s amusement.
“Will you relax? Nobody is following us. This isn’t my first rodeo, you know,” Nancy teased, reaching her hand over the gear shift to stop Robin’s leg from bouncing. The touch did nothing to quell the DGSE agent’s nerves, feeling like a jolt of electricity shot through her body.
“Relaxing is foreign to me in this line of work,” Robin sighed, sinking deeper into the leather passenger seat once Nancy moved her hand back to shift gears. “We can never be too cautious.”
Nancy hummed in half-hearted agreement as she took a turn onto the semi-familiar path of the hotel where Robin was staying. Before the taller woman could process what was happening, they were pulling up next to the tan ‘64 Studebaker GT Hawk she had arranged for her arrival in the States.
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Robin groaned, not believing this particular turn of events. What were the odds of both of them arriving in Hawkins around the same time, as well as them staying in the same hotel? She was already feeling hesitant about working with someone else, even if that someone was a stunning woman who also happened to be a fantastic kisser, but this was too much to be a coincidence. Robin turned in her seat to shoot a lethal glare at Nancy. “Are you spying on me?”
“What?” Nancy gaped incredulously, her eyebrows practically skyrocketing right off her face from the accusation. “You’re joking, right?”
“No, I’m not fucking joking, Wheeler,” Robin snapped, crossing her arms across her chest. She maintained the stern gaze directed at the rogue agent, trying to get a read on her. “How do I know that you’re not lying to me, giving me a false sense of security just to then take me out so I don’t uncover what’s really going on here?!”
“You really think that you’re the only agent that’s ever decided to stay at this hotel? Hawkins has one motel that is probably infested with rats or cockroaches. This is the only place that’s conveniently located and decent.”
Robin stayed quiet, fully aware that what Nancy was saying was, in fact, true. Robin would rather be caught dead than stay at the motel in Hawkins. She was just being paranoid like she usually was when working with others, because too many betrayals had put her in predicaments where she hadn’t been sure if she’d make it out alive. But that paranoia was often like a double-edged sword however, because while sometimes saving her skin, other times it ended up inflicting damage to her and those around her.
“Besides,” Nancy said, snapping Robin out of her thoughts. Her voice was laced with that all too familiar mischief that Robin was rapidly growing accustomed to whenever she spoke. “If I actually wanted to kill you, I could have in the woods earlier without you even knowing of my presence. Why do you think my code name is Fox, little Birdie?”
“Why didn’t you then?”
“Well, I can’t reveal all my secrets, can I?”
Nancy exited the vehicle, leaving Robin to sit in a state of confusion for a moment before following her into the hotel. She traipsed along silently to Nancy’s room, noting that it was just three rooms down from her own, which she decided to not comment on. She already had done a quick sweep of her room upon arrival to check for any recording devices, but now knowing that Nancy was so close by made her decide that a more thorough sweep was in order.
Nancy’s room had a similar design to Robin’s own. The neon lighting was dimmed with hues of pink, blue, and purple, dark enough so nobody could peer in and see whatever was going on inside. The queen-sized bed sat in the middle of the room, behind it was a large picture window with the curtains pulled shut. To the left, there was an oversized vanity with mirrors covering the entire length of the wall, and to the right was a mini bar stocked full of every type of liquor a person could want, and a small hallway leading to the bathroom.
The rogue agent immediately darted to the bed once making sure the door was locked behind them, reaching underneath it to pull out a lockbox. Robin was utterly shocked when the woman opened it up to reveal it was full of files. It was so much more than the measly little manila folder that Robin had been given before being shipped off to Hawkins. This couldn’t have been acquired overnight; this was years of research, of secrets, neatly compiled and stored under a hotel bed of all places. It made Robin wonder just how long Nancy had been investigating Hawkins, and exactly what it was that she had been dragged into.
“How did you get all of that when all I have is a few scraps of stories that hardly make sense?”
“Can I let you in on a little secret?” Nancy dodged the question by asking one of her own, much to Robin’s annoyance. She wondered if there would ever be a time when she would get a clear answer from the woman in front of her.
“If it informs me of what the hell all this is and how you got your hands on it then be my guest,” Robin sighed, taking a seat at the edge of the bed. Nancy joined her, setting the box next to her and pulling out a file titled Jane Ives.
“I thought I was going to be a journalist when I grew up,” the rogue agent said with a wistful smile. “I even started a semester at Emerson, trying to find a story so big that they’d have to take a woman seriously in the field.”
“I’m not really following why your career aspirations are important to what is in the box, Wheeler.”
“I understand that it’s clearly hard for you, but can you just trust me for two minutes?” Nancy sighed, placing a hand over Robin’s that the DGSE agent had to force herself not to yank away from. When Robin gave a begrudging nod in confirmation, she continued. “I came across a story about a mother, Terry Ives, who claimed the government stole her child from her. There were lawsuits and investigations, all pointing at this man, Doctor Martin Brenner.
She opened a file and pulled out a news article with who Robin quickly deduced as Doctor Brenner standing next to five patients. He was a fairly average looking middle-aged man, if Robin had passed him on the street she would have thought he lived a normal, boring life, but one thing she had learned over the years was to never underestimate anyone, no matter how normal they may appear. Something about the photo didn’t sit right with her. The patients looked lifeless, hollow, like they were just skin and bones and nothing else.
“Nothing came about any of it, but something didn’t sit right with me. It felt like a cover-up,” Nancy explained further, pulling Robin out of her thoughts. “So, I tracked her down so I could talk, but I was too late. Terry was still alive but she was like a shell of a person, totally unresponsive. But her sister… her sister gave me just enough to work with. She told me how Terry had been a part of a study in college. MK Ultra. Basically, they would give drugs to the patients, psychedelics, LSD, you name it, and put them in isolation tanks.”
“Isolation tanks? What was the purpose of doing that?” Robin asked, now fully intrigued by what Nancy was telling her. She hadn’t been given any information on MK Ultra, or any sort of human experimentations occurring in Hawkins. She had gone into this almost completely blind, only knowing of two disappearances and the supernatural beings currently circulating the rumor mill back at her headquarters in Marseille.
“They apparently wanted to expand the boundaries of the mind. But Terry didn’t know she was pregnant at the time.”
“With Jane.”
“Now you’re catching on, Birdie,” Nancy smirked, giving Robin’s hand that she was still covering with her own a squeeze. Robin felt a blush rise in her cheeks, having been so wrapped up in the story that she hadn’t realized Nancy’s hand still clasped over hers. “Terry’s sister said that she miscarried in the third trimester. She thinks that Terry is living in a fantasy, but I believe her story.”
“What is the reason the government would kidnap her daughter, though?”
“Terry was convinced that she had powers like telepathy or telekinesis, stuff you can do with your mind.”
“And have you found her? Jane?”
“No, I haven’t,” Nancy sighed. “They keep any information on the project extremely locked down, only high-security personnel are allowed to be anywhere close to whatever they’ve got going on. Everything I have has been taken when nobody is watching, or through contacts who have owed me favors.”
“So, let me get this straight,” Robin said once she had a moment to process what she was told. “You’re telling me that you ditched your actual career aspirations to become a rogue CIA agent, just to try to find some kid that you don’t even know exists or not?”
“I didn’t ditch my career aspirations, Birdie. I still plan to blow this out of the water once I have my proof, even if it kills me,” Nancy clarified. “And she does exist. I almost gave up on finding her but last year, right around when Barbara went missing, there were multiple reports of a child with a shaved head, who could apparently do things with her mind, right here in Hawkins.”
Nancy grabbed another article from the file, this one covering a suicide from November 7th, 1983. Just one day after the disappearance of the other child, Will Byers, that Robin had read about in her case files. Benny Hammond was the owner and chef of Benny’s Burgers, which had been shut down since his suicide. His death shocked the community, not seeming to be depressed or suicidal from what his friends had shared with the press.
“What’s he got to do with Jane?” Robin asked, a frown on her face as she continued to scan over the article.
“Word on the street was that he caught a kid with a shaved head stealing food in his diner, called social services to get her help, and then apparently committed suicide right after said call,” Nancy informed her. “I think it was another cover-up. I think that whatever it is she can do, they’re clearly willing to kill over it.”
“So how does this all connect to the disappearances of Barbara and that Byers kid? Where do these ‘supernatural monsters’ come into play in any of this?” Robin queried, using air quotes with her free hand around the creatures that were rumored to loom over Hawkins.
The twelve-year-old boy was the first to go missing in Hawkins, but unlike Barbara he was found. However, he had been originally pronounced dead, a body found in the quarry that officials had identified as the missing boy. Robin wondered how they had fucked that up so tremendously. Or perhaps what Nancy was saying was also linked to the disappearances, and someone somewhere was doing everything they could to try to cover their asses.
“My guess is that whatever they were doing with Jane, and maybe others like her, got out of hand. There’s been no proof that any creature took Will or Barbara, but maybe the Byers were forced to stay silent on the matter,” Nancy hypothesized.
Robin’s heart sank at that. If Nancy was right, there was so much more to uncover, and they had barely scratched the surface. This wasn’t just a quick in-and-out kind of job, this was going to take weeks, months, maybe even years to put all of the pieces together. She didn’t know the next time she’d be able to step foot into her quaint little apartment in Paris, the only place she’s ever been able to call home. Robin was stuck here, and that realization made her want to release a guttural scream.
“So basically the only one who might actually be able to give us some answers is a thirteen-year-old,” Robin groaned, flopping down on her back against the plush comforter of the hotel bed. She shoved down the sudden emotions that overwhelmed her in order to refocus on the mission. “It’s not like we can just go up and talk to this kid. Stranger danger and all that. He wouldn’t talk to random girls about his disappearance.”
“You’re right. We need to talk to him but not make it look suspicious.”
Nancy got off the bed to start pacing back and forth in front of the bed, a look of complete concentration on her face as she walked from one end of the room to the other. Robin would be lying to herself if she said the look on the other woman’s face wasn’t absolutely adorable, and how she missed the warmth of Nancy’s hand covering her own, but she quickly buried that thought deep down in her mind, along with the melancholy feelings of being trapped in this town, and locked it all tightly shut.
“He goes to school in Hawkins,” Robin supplied after a brief moment of silence, an idea popping in her head that just might be crazy enough to work. “You think we look young enough to pose as high schoolers? We could infiltrate his friend group, get them to trust us, and maybe we’ll get some answers from him.”
“That could work,” Nancy grinned. “We could be foreign exchange students so nobody suspects us of eavesdropping. Ruth and Rose from France. Coming to the small town of Hawkins in search of a better life.”
“Firstly, I am not taking on the name Ruth or Rose for this,” Robin grumbled. “Secondly, France is a little too close to home, I don’t want to risk someone finding out that I’m a French intelligence agent. And thirdly, this shit hole town would not provide us a better life than we would have in France, so that story doesn’t seem very plausible.”
“I don’t see you coming up with a better idea, Birdie,” Nancy teased with that stupidly attractive smirk on her face again.
“I just came up with the idea of going undercover as students!” Robin exclaimed in exasperation. “What other languages do you speak?”
“Italian, Spanish, and a little Mandarin and Russian.”
“We’ll go with Italian, then.”
“Sounds like a plan, Rose. I have someone who can get our paperwork in order for our aliases.”
“For fuck’s sake, Wheeler, my name will not be Rose!”
The laughter that followed her comment embarrassingly caused her heart rate to skyrocket. Robin knew then, in that hotel room just outside of Hawkins, Indiana, that this mission was going to completely alter the course of her life. Forming a tentative alliance with the woman who had unknowingly left a mark on her heart all those years ago in Paris was proving to be one of the biggest challenges Robin had ever encountered. If Hawkins didn’t kill her, then she had no doubt that her inevitable demise would be caused by none other than Nancy Wheeler.
