For the longest time, I always thought I wanted to be an artist.

#and in a roundabout sort of way i am #and i doubt i'll ever make anything that's “worthy” enough to hang in a museum or gallery #but sometimes it's a lot more gratifying inspiring other people and helping them make stuff #helped a kid in my class today who didn't have a parent with them make a flower and a bat and a butterfly #they just needed a lot of help but they were so proud of that flower they made and were so excited they could take it home #another kid made the cutest bunny and a little diorama for it out of a piece of bark and literal trash we picked up on the trail #even made a little tail out of a gold sequin that they magically collected from somewhere #had another kid bring back a whole ass tumbleweed with grand ambitions to decorate it but then had a sudden change of plans #so sure you can draw a cat on your piece of origami paper with the hot glue gun kid just don't burn yourself or use all the glue sticks #i don't know what the moral of this story is but look i just had a nice day okay #some days i'm out there attempting to save a whole ass ecosystem and trying to convince people to give a shit #other days hanging out with kids and gluing bits of nicely folded paper to a twig #rambling into the void #little ghost on the prairie #tag essay

not to be all "back in my day" but I miss when anime had titles like "my hero academia" or "future diary" and not "the magical revolution of the reincarnated princess and the genius young lady" or "endou and kobayashi live: the latest on tsundere villainess lieselotte"

"A story doesn't need a theme in order to be good" I'm only saying this once but a theme isn't some secret coded message an author weaves into a piece so that your English teacher can talk about Death or Family. A theme is a summary of an idea in the work. If the story is "Susan went grocery shopping and saw a weird bird" then it might have themes like 'birds don't belong in grocery stores' or 'nature is interesting and worth paying attention to' or 'small things can be worth hearing about.' Those could be the themes of the work. It doesn't matter if the author intended them or not, because reading is collaborative and the text gets its meaning from the reader (this is what "death of the author" means).

Every work has themes in it, and not just the ones your teachers made you read in high school. Stories that are bad or clearly not intended to have deep messages still have themes. It is inherent in being a story. All stories have themes, even if those themes are shallow, because stories are sentences connected together for the purpose of expressing ideas, and ideas are all that themes are.

Saw a reddit post today about a girl who was upset that her childhood best friend replaced a photo of the two of them in his wallet with one of him and his girlfriend. And while yeah, she was being unreasonable with a lot of what she was saying, I totally understand the sadness of a friend "replacing" you with someone they have romantic feelings for. Makes it worse when the top comment is this

Every single comment on this post is about how family and romantic relationships always take precedence over friendships. I don't have anything more to say to this aside from the fact that... this is why it's hard for aroaces to imagine futures for themselves. Society drills it into your head that you're going to live in a world where you are no one's priority if you don't have romantic relationships and it fucking sucks
