i’ll never not be embarrassed about reading fanfiction, but it truly makes me so happy. so many fanfics are written as professionally as a published book, they just use characters we already know and love, and i’ll never not feel indebted to the people who put hours into writings just for silly little people on the internet to read and fawn over. so to any fanfic writer out there, i owe you my happiness :)

Or Peter is madly in love with Wade, and plans to meet him on top of his apartment building to reveal his identity. Wade thinks Peter is standing on the ledge ready to jump, and takes it upon himself to make sure he gets home safe and finds a reason to live again.

Unfortunately, things start to get sticky when Deadpool, who Spider-Man's been on-again off-again with (okay, yeah, lowkey messing around with), crashes into Peter's life and demands the photographer help him figure out what's got his favorite webhead so spooked.

Wade Winston Wilson is ugly. His skin's inside out. It ripples and moves every second of every day, at constant war with the cancer. Vanessa put on a brave face for him when she first saw the changes, but it turns out even she can't stomach the sight for long. He's ugly and alone and nothing will ever be good in life again -
If only that were his only problem.
But Weapon X is at it again, under crisp new management, turning orphans into super slaves and bringing out the big guns to make sure nobody interferes this go around (namely one Pool comma Dead). So now, not only is Wade alone and ugly forever, but he's got a bit of a pest problem in the form of a black-clad murder-happy man spider with a collar around his neck and an unhealthy obsession with tying Deadpool up.
So maybe it's not all bad...

He sighs from where he’s prone, arms akimbo, and roof gravel digging into his spine. “I lost my job. My… other job. The one that actually pays the bills.”
He doesn’t want to dwell on why he’s telling Deadpool of all people. Surely it has nothing to do with his desperate lack of friends. MJ is in California chasing her dreams, Harry’s undergoing treatment for his mental health and isn’t allowed visitors (not that it matters since they blacklisted Peter after last time), and Gwen… Well.
And it’s not like he can talk to Aunt May without her worrying about him starving to death under a bridge or something so… Deadpool it is. Man, when did his life get this pathetic?
OR: The one where Peter and Wade are literal soulmates but don't realize it for literal years because they're literal idiots.

Wherein Deadpool is reluctantly hired to protect Peter Parker from an organization out to hunt him, with varying success on both ends and quite a lot of feelings, revelations, and identity crises.

Classics/Required Reading:
Between Apollo and Arachne. / He is Soundless From Afar. / Blood Sickness. by elastic honey (infernoconcealed)
I got into this fandom specifically because of this author. I think all of their work is incredible but, these three are my favorites and also the first bookmarks I ever made. I like the ways they explore their dynamic, and they often explore darker scenarios between the two of them with a lot of heart and nuance.
How To Get Physical by Wilt
I like their writing as much as I like their art, but this one in particular is a consistent re-read for me. It's a trans Peter written by a clearly trans writer, and it's soft and kind and good-hearted in a way that really, really sells the history between them.
Up to the Sun (Full Speed Ahead, Mr. Parker) by SleepsWithCoyotes
The first AU I really enjoyed and also one of the best. Eldritch horror Wade that goes from a massive tentacle creature to an off-putting mercenary that gets attached to Spider-Man. It's great. The whole verse is great.
for the wrong reasons by orphan_account
This is one of my favorite Wade character studies of all time. He gets hit with a truth serum and ends up at Peter's apartment. It's sad and complicated and perfect, and I've read it more than a few times.
gunpowder and firewood / steel and flint * by periodically_puzzled
This is forever one of my favorites. It's the best first-person POV in the fandom hands down and is just so fucking good. It's got everything, idenity porn, grindr, complicated explorations of emotional manipulation, bromance, and it's so very funny.
Snake Oil by BunsofHoney
This was so good that my writing group chat temporarily re-named our chat after it. Peter is a preacher and Wade is a possessed snake oil salesman. It's very good, and also you will learn something about the 20s as it is immensely well researched.
Blazed (Smoking Weed is Gay) * by GreendaleHumanBeing
This is one of my all-time favorites. Peter is coping with his midlife crisis by being a huge stoner, and Wade has mellowed out and joins him for long smoke sessions. It's very slice of life, intimate, slow burn friends to lovers. It's one of those reads that just feels really, really good and relatable.
Paradise (spread out with a butter knife) by Sarah_Sandwich
A soulmate/slice of life work that really will make you feel something profound by the end of it. I read this one at four in the morning and didn't sleep until I was finished with it. It made me feel something big.
Dog Years by androgynousdouche
This is the only unfinished work on this list but man, is it a hidden treasure. They really build a foundation for the relationship and the intimacy between these two is so....it's really good. I wish it was finished, but even though it's not, I still think it's worth the read.

Tip of the Tongue * by TimidTurnip
I think this is probably the work I go back and re-read the most. It's got everything. Peter Parker's insane oral fixation, his inability to come to terms with his own bi-sexuality, homies who are mean to each other dynamics, and worship based blow jobs. It's great. You should read it.

I think this is probably two of the most infamous smut works in the fandom but they both really, really deserve the hype. The first is the eating out fic of all time specifically for me but also for a lot of other people and the second is my favorite situational porn.
Meeting Minutes */ Pitter Patter by WhoopsOK
These are hands down the best watersports fics in the entire fandom. I've read the entire tag, I would know. The first has Peter being hit by a truth serum and telling his fantasies to Wade who intentionally does not sleep with him, and it's hot and good dynamic wise. The second is just a very hot scenario where Peter pisses in Wade's mouth while he works behind the counter. Great stuff.

I love the way this author writes them so much. It's fun and fresh and so good at building up some good old-fashioned tension. It also has some great character study moments inbetween blow jobs (my beloved)
Fucked Up Shit:

I also consider these classics/required reading but they are all very dark and go places that fans of the classic dynamic might be surprised by. SNGTDT is the best and darkest soulmate AU you'll ever read. SftZA is not only an incredible zombie AU but also one of my personal favorite pieces of zombie fiction period. NYLaGttH is one of my favorite smut fics of all time and one I often re-read (the title should be taken literally)

The Peter "adrenaline kink" Parker work. It's dubious and intimate and exhilarating in a way that never gets old.

also known as "the fic that triggers me so bad that I've never commented on it despite reading it eight times" this is like. One of the darkest works in the fandom, hands down and if you can relate at all with the content, will put you in some sort of headspace. It's excellent. It's horrifying.
Because You're Mine *- WaterMe
I absolutely love this one. It's a sex-pollen turned non-con work that is very dark (mind the tags) but if you want to go there, this is the place to go. I always come back to it and find something new to appreciate. Also the only second person work I've ever enjoyed/felt affected by in the way I think second person is supposed to do. (honorary mention by this author: their Arbor day fic)
Sinking by coveryourheads
This one is hard to describe, but if you're interested in some really nuanced work on sexuality, this one will sit with you for a while. Peter and Wade are in an intense D/s relationship that is both abstract and personal in ways I've never really read about before.

For some reason, Peter thinks Deadpool knows his secret identity so he thinks its not a big deal to chat with the merc in his civilian identity whenever he bumps into him in various locations. Eccentrics are everywhere and this guy is really cute and doesn’t seem to mind hanging out with him!

Yeah absolutely! But also do you want a like tutorial or something? When I'm looking for plot heavy fics I'll sort by word count or bookmarks and put in a word count range like 25k to 100k
The Merc with a Beak by Jenetica, I'm sure we've already read this one but it's just so good, the character growth, the slow burn, the slow reveal of information we already know, the adorable animals!
Can Beauty Come Out of Ashes (with Xanax and a Cold Brew)? by dabblingwithwords. This is a fashion au and like listen usually I'm not an au person, but the devil wears prada is my favorite movie and this has those vibes minus Wade being a mean boss, he's very cool in this fic and still has the scars!!
Off The Record by crookedswingset. How do I even describe this fic the identity shenanigans are off the charts. Wade and Peter are hooking up but Wade doesn't know he's Spider-Man and everything spirals from there. There's a real sense of scale with how many characters are included in this fic, it feels like a comic book story
The 6 Times Peter Wanted To Reveal his Identity (And the 1 Time He Did) by Spongeekat. A lovely identity reveal fic if you couldn't tell by the title, but I really like Wade and Peter's characterization in this and watching Peter try and try to tell Wade is fantastic. Also I see Ellie tagged and I smash the kudos button
All About Chemistry by TwiceBakedPotato. This is the best college au because neither of them is young, Wade's a veteran and Peter's a professor and their chemistry is crazy lmao also I love all the cameos from other marvel characters throughout the college really an amazing fun fic

The premise of this fic is so silly (and i mean that in the best way possible) and it is such a fun read. Great characterization and lots of laughs.

Peter is blackmailed into taking a break from being Spider-Man by one of his co-workers who is threatening to leak his identity. Deadpool is worried by Spider-mans sudden disappearance and recruits Peter(who he doesn’t know is actually Spider-Man) to help him.
I can not recommend this fic enough! It is my all time favorite and such a comfort fic, it just has all the elements I love. Perfect balance of angst, humor, and a great plot.

I love the 5 + 1(or in this case 6 + 1) format and I think this was a very unique spin on it. I’m always a sucker for some hurt/comfort.

Deadpool saves Peter from a Hydra facility that had been using him as a test subject for three years. Peter has to deal with his PTSD and a symbiote as they travel together and fall in love.
Love this one so much. Very well written and tackles some really heavy topics in such a good wau. It still had all the things I like about Spideypool but the characterization felt really fresh and different.

For this one I put the authors summary because it’s been a while since I read this I don’t remember a whole lot of the plot(time for a reread) but I am 100% sure I loved it. I remember it being super sweet and having lots of hurt comfort.

Say Anything...Except That - I was following this from the first chapter and I'm now mutuals with the author which was very fanboy moment for me (if you're seeing this, hi!). it has a lot of old school fanfiction.net quirks to it which might be a bit difficult to swallow if you've only been reading fic for a few years, but honestly I think this fic is really good and holds up to this day. it's been a while since I read it last but iirc Deadpool has to protect Spider-Man or Peter from assassination attempts and there's a lot of pining involved. also mattfoggy ended up having a nice arc because this was 2015 and Daredevil had just aired (this is technically incomplete there's one chapter left but if I had to reread it multiple times when there were only like ten chapters you can handle it)
under attack - more fics by people who are wayyy too cool to have followed me back and yet somehow did? anyway this is part of stackthedeck's team red slash series (ELITE ship fyi) but this one is spideypool focused and has some nice fluff. fighting as flirting idk what else to say it's golden

Dissonance - another longfic that took half a decade to write about deadpool protecting spider-man from harm. I actually don't know why this trope is so good peter really can defend himself but there you go
Perfect Enough - ohm y gOD this fic series is so good. this au hinges on such a tiny difference in peter's history but it makes ALL the difference. anyway in this world basically nobody has a functional secret identity anymore except for spider-man. meanwhile, wade wilson and peter parker start dating. so much plot, two separate longfics each around 140k, good luck this CONSUMED my life
speaking of consumed, rippling - this is part of a series called Into the Multiverse and is based on the Spiderverse film so it's Peter B. which I LOVE (spideybpool FUCKS). the series spun out of the authors' other series and it is, in fact, a pain to read the main entries in the series without reading the other serieses which means that I did spend two weeks doing little to nothing except reading deniigiq's work, but a. it was worth b. this one can be read as a standalone! wade jumps in front of a bullet for peter b and he angsts about it I love it
finally ahem speaking of Peter B, did you know I've been writing spideypool fic since 2015 and I wrote one specifically for spiderverse? I'm a mess (but I'm the mess that you wanted) is really a mix of spiderverse and comic canon like, five years into the future, and deals mostly with like, depression and suicidal ideation on Peter's behalf, but hey there's also a plot AND a happy polyam ending which, what else could you want really
