Re Pokemon
So last night anon told us that in the Spanish version of the latest Pokemon games there's an area inspired by Euskal Herria called Pueblo Hozkailu.
Tumblr media
Hozkailu means fridge in Basque and we guess it makes sense since in the English version - as @spanishskulduggery gently told us - the area is called Montenevera, Mount Fridge in Spanish.
Please, for those non-Basque speakers that play the Spanish version: it sounds os-kai-yu.
The Basque references don't stop there, oh no. We already knew that pokemon Grafaiai painted the trees, clearly inspired by the Oma forest:
Tumblr media
But the reference that literally killed us is that the people of Pueblo Hozkailu seemingly speak Spanish written with some Basque rules? Like substituting some Cs by Ks and CHs by TXs:
Tumblr media
And the local gym trainers are called Mikel...
Tumblr media
... and Amaia
Tumblr media
💀💀💀💀
Also, could we say that everybody dressing like they were in the desert when they're surrounded by snow is also a Basque reference?
Eskerrik asko to @shawshow15243 for sharing the link with the screen caps!

hi im working on my senior thesis in spanish and was wondering if you or someone in the notes could answer a question for me
im planning on creating some kind of explanation for the various uses of 'se' (as a reflexive pronoun, middle voice marker, impersonal subject marker, passive marker) and im not sure if i should just jump into it or if i should use some descriptive framework (the problem there being that i can only really think of generative grammar and i have 0 experience with that)
my other option is to look at it from a historical point of view (double major in classics so my latin is excellent) but i'm not sure about how much i'd actually accomplish in terms of novel-idea-making there
tldr; what are some alternatives to transformational-generative grammar or just doing a diachronic study
This is a good question, and I'll give this a bit of a signal boost. You might consider taking a look at what @spanishskulduggery has done over the years. They have a number of posts about phenomena in Spanish including the various uses of se. Transformational grammar doesn't really explain anything, so it won't be useful for anyone outside a syntactician. It's like if you're hanging off a cliff asking for help and someone comes to you and says, "You're hanging because at an earlier stage of development, your chi dharma failed to elevate to your karma node, because its features were already checked before spellout." Then they calmly walk away with a supreme sense of satisfaction.
Now, if you're asking how to do something new, there's no answer to that, I think, because either I or someone else comes up with some brand new whizbang explanation, which would be useless, since it isn't yours, or we'll come up with nothing, leaving you in roughly the same spot.
Also, I think this question is now old because I kind of stopped looking at my asks and I feel like 70 years passed and I left the endless cycle of death and rebirth, reached nirvana, dug it, wanted something new, and so voluntarily entered the cycle of death and rebirth again, lived, opened a woodworking shop, had a fairly good run of it, sold the business, walked the earth for a decade or so, then opened a juice collective where I fronted an alt-folk-funk band called the BanCrerrys. We had a couple of hits, but Cindy and MP started dating, wanted to take things in a new creative direction, and I just wasn't up for the arguments, so I bailed, and now they're known as the FruiTee-ish'n Scholarship Service, and they do both music and pottery jams. I, meanwhile, hung up by banjo and returned to my old life as a Tumblorg, where I returned to find this ask, and now I feel like I'm staring up at it from the bottom of a koi pond, thinking things like, "Linguistics...? Papers...?"
In other words, sorry I couldn't be of more help.

dictionary app: spanishdict. way better than google translate. teaches grammar and vocab as well.
talk to native speakers: hellotalk, italki
youtube: dreaming spanish. he is a native spanish speaker and focuses on learning spanish through comprehensible content. makes stories, plays games, all that in spanish. content ranges from super beginner- intermediate
vocab/grammar apps/sites: memrise, duolingo, conjugato, studyspanish.com, ankiweb.com (lets u make ur own flashcards
reddits: r/languagelearning, r/spanish, r/learnspanish. good for questions. r/spanish is down rn cause of the reddit strike.
spanishskulduggery on tumblr also answers questions about spanish. the language learning, or spanish tag on tumblr in general is real good too.
listening to music (un veneno, baila como hombre, and me voy r some favs rn. just a suggestion), youtube vids, reading and watching tv in spanish also helps. i cant share what site i use to like pirate movies n shit.. but if you like google (in spanish) what movie/show you wanna watch and add reddit at the end, some subreddits will pop up and give u suggestions.
this is what ive used for like the last half year. not all of them at once tho. i mostly just do a grammar lesson and then like watch some tv in spanish, write some new vocab words down, then call it a day.
PSPSPSPS (at those of y’all who wanna learn or improve your Spanish)

In Spanish, a way to say that you don't believe someone's excuses is "because grandpa smokes and grandma farts" (que si el abuelo fuma, que si la abuela se tira pedos).

Days of the week - sayings and usages
Let's talk about the week (it doesn't understand 🎵) -- no fr, let's talk about the days of the week! And sorry for this late 90s throwback (Prezioso and Marvin, it's still Italian dance music anyway lol)
Anyway
The post I reblogged yesterday from @spanishskulduggery reminded me of some sayings and songs we have related to the days of the week. And I admit I felt kinda bad about this Wednesday-shaming, so here I am :)
"Né di Venere né di Marte ci si sposa né si parte... né si dà principio all'arte". (= You don't get married on Tuesday -Marte+dì- or on Friday -Venere+dì-, nor you start any endeavour). The first bit is the most famous tbh, as we often repeat it even for someone's marriage or when someone is leaving for holidays.
"Mercoledì!" - As mentioned in this post and in the comments too, we (as Spanish) may use "Mercoledì" to not swear (well, to not say "merda" plainly tbh, or to actually mention it in a more "imaginative/mild" way as I added in the reblog... it depends a bit)
We also have the very famous saying "Thursday dumplings, Friday fish, Saturday tripe" = Giovedì gnocchi, venerdì pesce, sabato trippa. You may hear us saying these separately according on the day we're in (or that gets mentioned) as well.
"Gli/Le manca un/qualche venerdì" (he/she misses a/some Friday/s, literally). You can use this sentence when you want to refer to someone that seems a bit weird or eccentric, even crazy. Sometimes you may hear "Non hai tutti i venerdì a posto" (you don't have all the Fridays in the right place). Some may use "giovedì" instead of "venerdì", tbh but I generally hear Friday the most. This probably originates from the fact that Thursday and Friday are kinda central days of the week and missing them the week is incomplete and therefore "not entirely sane".
There are some sayings about "Venerdì" but honestly I have never really heard of them. Still, here you have the main one (meanings are basically the same): "Chi ride il venerdì, piange la domenica" = Those who laugh on Friday, cry on Sunday. I believe this is simply not true lol.
"E il sabato? E il sabato fa così🎶" (by La Rua)
Francesco Salvi, singer, published the album "In gita col Salvi" in 1992. The songs are mostly about our cultural (and Regional, at times, as you may hear some Lombardo here and here) background -eg: La macchina del capo, Mamma mia dammi 100 lire, Vecchio Scarpone, FlikFlok-, and he made them in a kinda different/more excited(?) way. One of them is related to the days of the week and it's this one. The link will bring you to the whole album's list though, so feel free to give a listen to others as well.

They really said "Stuff that's too cringey for here"
Gurl you are on Tumblr, we are the cringe. Anything below either doesn't exist or shouldn't exist.
For example: If I wasn't on Tumblr I wouldn't have said Gurl.
@spanishskulduggery They really took your post and called you "too cringey for here" LMAO

9 & 10? :)
Hi!
9. Favorite study resource this year? Hmm I used a bunch of different ones tbh but mostly some langblrs here on tumblr like @bieups @spanishskulduggery @pompadourpink @a-pop-of-korean @korstudying to mention a few (thank you loads for your work!) and a couple of youtube channels like Learn Korean with Jadoo and Koreanfullcourse. (I focused more on Korean anyway)
10. Favorite language learning moment this year? It's not learning per se but... Probably the moment in which I understood which item was being mentioned in an English text through its Korean definition and not its English noun. Felt proud (also kinda bad about my English but... yeah) LOL
Thanks :)

How can I start learning Spanish?
If you are an absolute total beginner, my biggest recommendation is to check out www.studyspanish.com/grammar and to check out www.conjuguemos.com which are online grammar lessons
Truly what I've found is you start with the fundamentals and you just go through your language learning journey accumulating knowledge, and it always feels like an uphill battle until one day you're aware of all the things you don't know/understand yet, but you also know how to look up what you don't know - and that's how you know you've made it
I personally find that when you're starting Spanish from nothing you need to focus on conjugations and the most essential verbs; most verbs are regular so when you understand the basic rules for -ar, -er, and -ir verbs you can do a lot in Spanish
The most irregular verbs of all time - which tend to be irregular in multiple tenses
ser
ir
ver
dar
estar
tener
venir
decir
querer
poder
poner
hacer
caber*
haber
*caber is annoyingly irregular but not the most super common verb used; it's "to fit (into a space)" like "capacity" so it's useful when you need it, but otherwise more limited
The are other little bits of grammar knowledge that you'll learn as you go, like when to use saber vs conocer, or ser and estar... things that take practice and repetition but let me know if there are any questions you have as you go and I can help give some more insight
There are other things that are important, but less all consuming, like stem-changing verbs [E->I, E->IE, O->UE] or certain irregularities, and exceptions like conocer or little things like fingir or vencer - which are littler things though more easily understood when you have some more experience
You're also going to want to devote a lot of time to the present tense which is the very first tense you're introduced to
Also - Things You Should Know At Each Level - though for your purposes I'd say you're probably A1 and A2 and try not to focus on the rest for now; you'll get discouraged if you think of all the things you don't know, trust me I was there

Guys, I really need your help.
I’m sorry for posting this here, but I feel as if my studies and education are largely dependent on the inspiration and support my mother has given me. So it just feels right. I came home from college yesterday and my mother informed me that the pain she’s been experiencing is getting worse and worse. I’m starting to fear that if I don’t help her get surgery in 2019, she might be moving into a level of nerve damage that can’t be repaired. I want my mom to be able to live painlessly and without constantly being aware of every step she takes and how much it hurts. She’s sacrificed so much for me, and it’s now my turn to do whatever I can to see that she’s taken care of. Even a dollar would mean so much to us.
If you cannot donate, please reblog and tell your friends or family. Share on any social media platform you want.
