Just seen someone on twitter saying James Cameron was trying to deradicalise the anti-imperialist messaging of Star Wars on a clip of him asking George Lucas leading questions so that he could say explicitly that’s what the movies were about. Because it makes so much sense that the man who hates cops so much he even put one in Titanic to remind you they’re evil and is working on a five-movie franchise about how America is evil and must be destroyed … would want to do that.

Lo'ak x Fem!Reader (Platonic)
Tumblr media
➴ Summary: Eywa finally hears Lo’ak’s pleas for her to bring his brother back but instead of a brother, Lo’ak receives howling winds with lashing rain and a warrior… who eats people?
➴ Warning:  brief mention of character description  e.g. height, age and features but it doesn’t impact the story, I will be bringing up height again I think but it’s not an important plot point
➴ Word count: 5.7k
➴ Note: Hiii, sorry this has taken so long to come out. I had been writing and rewriting this for I don’t know how long alongside work, moving house and being ill. Sorry for the wait. I’m not too sure if I even like this but this is the longest I’ve written so far.
This is how I imagine Ao’nung to look >>> I love it
I mentioned in the previous part that Lo’ak commented that y/n is taller up close. I imagine Lo’ak being about 8’2 and y/n being 8’5 (I made heights for everyone, minus the adults).
I got a message about how I personally imagine y/n, I didn’t start writing this with a final look for her in mind, so I created a pinterest to get ideas >>> if you wanna take a look
Feel free to comment or message me if you have any suggestions.

[three] [five]
Eight days. It has been eight days since y/n landed on Awa’atlu. Eight days with no updates from her father. She had been watching the skies for anything but just like the rest of Awa’atlu, the sky was calm. But to y/n it was unsettling.
She was becoming restless with the routine she had slipped into. Wake up, eat breakfast with Lo’ak, worry about her people, avoid Ronal and mend the breastplate. The latter seems to be the hardest because the Metkayina doesn’t have access to the same materials as those on the island. In all honesty, y/n did not need a saddle to return to her home, it was mainly for comfort. But when she thought of leaving, the burn in her chest told her to stay.
She had been thinking nonstop about what could’ve happened or what could be happening. Had her father found the two avatars and dealt with them? Had there been more casualties? If something extreme had happened, surely someone would fly out to find her? It wouldn’t be hard to track her down, considering Rìkxi had taken it upon himself to claim a corner of the island as his own.
“Let’s do something today,” y/n suggested as Lo’ak walked into her marui with a bowl of fruit in his arms.
Lo’ak paused, sitting down, crossing his legs and putting the bowl next to him.
“Are you asking me on a date?” He smirked
“Don’t be ridiculous.”
“Ridiculous? Am I not your type?”
“I hate to say it, but you’re not. You’re a bit too young and you’re not tall enough.”
“My poor heart,” Lo’ak said dramatically, placing a hand on his chest. “I thought we had something special.”
Y/n rolled her eyes at his antics while she sat down opposite him, taking a large melon out of the basket and began cutting it into chunks.
“What should we do?” he chuckled, his hand waving over the basket before picking up a Yovo.
“What do you usually do?” Y/n questioned.
“Hmm well, I was thinking about going for a swim. You can come with. Do you know how?”
“I swim,” y/n replied.
“But are you any good?”
“I won’t drown.”
“Good enough for me,” Lo’ak took a bite of the Yovo fruit and wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. “Well, I’m sure Kiri will swim with us. I can see if Ao’nung and Rotxo would be interested. Tsireya, maybe not, she has plans with some of her… Friends.”
“Friends?” Y/n picked up on how Lo’ak said the word with such disdain. “You don’t like these friends?”
“For the most part, they’re okay but there is one. His name’s K’aung, and he fishes with Ao’nung sometimes. He’s the worst. He used to bully Kiri a lot and now he follows Tsireya around, you’d think she has a second shadow. And I’m sure he watches my every move.”
“Maybe he’s in love with you? You and Tsireya aren’t together, he may think he has a chance.”
Lo’ak’s face screwed up in absolute disgust at the idea.
“How could you say something so disgusting? He makes me feel ill.”
Tumblr media
Just as Lo’ak planned during breakfast, the pair went swimming with Kiri, Ao’nung and Rotxo at midday. Kiri informed the group that Tuk wouldn't be joining them. They ran into Tsireya on their way to the ilu but as predicted, she was standing with other Metkayina teens, one boy staring Lo’ak down, y/n doing the same to him.
The ride away from the village went somewhat well. Ao’nung had been taking subtle jabs at y/n which did not go unnoticed by the girl, which led to her riding with him instead of Lo’ak which was the original plan.
“Y/n. Do you know how to swim?”
“I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t.”
That seemed to be enough for Ao’nung because, in a split second, he spun around and pushed y/n off of his ilu with a smug smile on his face, which didn’t last long as y/n hand grabbed his bicep, dragging him down with her.
As the two resurfaced, y/n hit Ao’nung’s forehead muttering ‘skxawng’ under her breath before swimming to the closest rock formation with Lo’ak, Kiri and Rotxo following close behind her. Ao’nung rolled his eyes before joining the others. The group settled on the rock in a circle, y/n sat between Rotxo and Lo’ak, opposite Ao’nung.
“So, y/n, tell us about yourself. You have four fingers like these two.” Rotxo motioned to the Sully siblings, “Are your parents or were your parents, sky people too?”
“Sky people? No, a lot of my people have four fingers.”
“How?” Kiri questioned, eyes full of wonder.
“I’m not sure. My grandmother told me that this trait started to appear when she was a child, some think it was before that.” Y/n looked down at her hands and shrugged, “some think it is a punishment from Eywa, while some think it's a gift.”
“What do you think?” Lo’ak questioned, his voice sounding tense
“I haven't really thought about it, my uncle and younger brother are the same so it’s what I am used to.”
“Do you know why?” Ao’nung questioned, seemingly interested in the topic.
“Apparently, Sky people came to our shores in need of help. The old Olo'eyktans allowed them to stay on the smaller islands, in agreement that they wouldn’t interfere with the clans and in return, they were given food supplies and different resources to survive. But then, they started sneaking onto the large islands and into villages, stealing from us. When they were given a warning, they went against it and started using violence. It led to great battles, many islands were scorched, and the Olo'eyktans vowed there would be no survivors. But, there were sky people who didn’t participate in the battles. They lived amongst my people, helping build huts and weapons until they died. Their bodies burned and their ashes were buried beneath the spirit tree. A generation later, children were being born with four fingers and four toes.”
The group around y/n sat in silence taking in what they had heard. Out of all of them, Kiri seemed to be the most invested in the story. The idea of sky people existing on Pandora before her parents was fascinating.
“And… And do you believe that?” Kiri questioned in disbelief and amazement.
“I’m sure there's some truth to it,” y/n started looking at the group around her, shrugging. “You never know.”
There was a moment of silence before Ao’nung cleared his throat, his eyes shifting between y/n and Lo’ak.
“You two seem close, even though you’ve only known each other for what? A week? You eat together every morning, Lo’ak comes back with nothing but good things to say. Are you two,” he waved his hands between the two in front of him “a couple?” His tone was accusatory.
“It’s not hard to make friends, you know. You should try it.” Lo’ak shot back rolling his eyes, “and y/n isn’t my type. A bit too tall and a bit old for me.”
Y/n nudged Lo’ak slightly, smiling at the memory of the conversation they had that morning.
“How old are you?” Rotxo questioned innocently.
“Eighteen.”
“Perfect for you, Ao’nung.”
“Shut it.” Ao’nung snapped back, a grimace on his face.
“You don’t have a chance bro,” Lo’ak added
“I said, shut up.”
Kiri rolled her eyes at the boys’ antics while offering y/n a smile which was returned.
Tumblr media
The group finally settled down on the rocks, some lying down enjoying the peaceful atmosphere, until Lo’ak scrambled to his feet, hitting Kiri in the process.
“Hey! Watch it!” She screamed, swatting a hand at him but Lo’ak took no notice of it as he walked to the edge of the rock before diving over the edge. Y/n sat up as soon as the boy disappeared from her sight. No one seemed to be concerned. She walked to the edge of the rocks and looking down, she saw Lo’ak frantically moving his hands while perched on the edge of a tulkun fin. A tulkun, the only tulkun, she was familiar with.
Payakan.
Payakan’s large eye looked away from Lo’ak and up at y/n, making a sound that sounded similar to a greeting.
“You know each other?”
“Kind of. Payakan spent a lot of time on our shores but then he just left. Nice to see he’s being taken care of over here.”
Y/n eased herself into the water, swimming over to the tulkun and pulled herself up to sit next to Lo’ak.
“The last time I heard anything about him, my brother was telling me that sky people were hunting him.”
At this omission, Payakan dropped his fin slightly, causing y/n and Lo’ak to be dunked into the water briefly.
“Sorry! Sorry!” Y/n coughed, “but that’s what I heard.”
Payakan made a clicking noise and looked away.
“You know about that?” Lo’ak questioned raising an eyebrow.
“Of course, a watcher from my village relaid the information and my brother told me.”
“A watcher? What do they do?”
“Watch? It’s in the name. They survey the skies, above the clouds and report back what they see.”
“What more did they say? What more do you know?”
Y/n paused to think, what more did she know? Her mind darted back to her dream behind the waterfall. It had been a recurring dream, but the ending was still the same.
“Nothing really. A huge fire. Some things washed up on our shores.”
“Right.” Lo’ak nodded. He didn’t look like he was convinced by y/n’s answer but accepted it anyway. He then turned back to Payakan, moving his hands before pointing at y/n.
“What are you saying?”
“Asking if he saw you did anything embarrassing as a child that I could use against you sometime.”
“Oh stop it.” Y/n laughed, putting her hand on the back of Lo’ak’s head, the action making the younger boy freeze at the familiar gesture
“Can I ask you something?” He questioned suddenly, his eyes almost pleading. The older girl nodded, giving him her full attention. This is something he had been curious about, he had heard the other villagers talk about it, trying to come up with their own conclusions. “What made you come here? I know there was a storm and everything but was coming here planned?”
“No,” the older girl responded without any hesitation, “I can’t say being a guest on these islands was a part of my plan.”
“So, why did you leave your people?”
“My father ordered it. I wasn't going to say no, it is my duty I guess.”
“Your father is Olo’eyktan? My dad was… Once. He gave that up to move here. Sometimes I wish he didn’t. I wish we didn’t leave the forest.” Lo’ak’s ears drooped at the thought of his home, his grandmother, his friends… Spider. Payakan made a noise that caused Lo’ak to perk up slightly, “but of course, coming here has been great. I just miss home.”
“You know you can always go back,” y/n started, “you don’t have to be here for the rest of your life.”
Lo’ak paused at her words, he had thought this too. He could not see himself staying in the village forever, he is a forest Na’vi after all, but he had begun to build a life here, the whole family has. He couldn’t leave. His family was here, his whole family. Sully’s stick together and no one can be left behind.
“Wait, we’re off topic. Why did your father order you to leave your people?”
“I was sent to look for someone. Well, two someone’s actually. They had been under close watch for two years, my father instructed that no one was to interact with them, without his permission and with good reason. Before I came, they managed to escape, people were hurt. From what I gathered from my dad. They’re dangerous. They do not have good intentions. So they’re to be found and brought back and then maybe they can be dealt with like how my father intended without the input of others trying to ‘keep the peace’.”
No, it can’t be. Lo’ak face filled with panic and his breath hitched.
“Do you… Do you know their names?” he questioned, hands curling into fists in his lap
Miles Quaritch. Lyle Wainfleet.
“I can’t say I remember.” She lied looking past Lo’ak, hoping he did not detect any hesitation, “Payakan, my old friend. If it’s not too much to ask, will you be able to pass a message on to my brother that I’m okay?” She asked with a smile, Lo’ak’s eyes on her.
“Your brother?”
“He has a specific spot, his thinking rock, Payakan knows it. He’ll pass on the message to my parents.”
The tulkun made a noise of agreement, before slowly lowering his fin, easing the Na’vi into the water before bidding the two goodbyes and swimming off.
“Why did he listen to you? He’s my spirit brother.”
“I’ve known him longer.”
Lo’ak rolled his eyes and splashed water in the older girl's direction.

Tuk skipped through the forest ahead of her parents, her fingers brushing against loose vines hanging beside her. Today, she was going to tend to the ikran while Lo’ak and Kiri were away. This is something she enjoyed, the forest here wasn’t the same, it wasn’t as dense or filled with the same creatures but it was pretty, it reminded her of home.
Tuk’s skip turned into a jog as the greenery became more sparse and more light flooded in.
“Tuk. Slow down please.” Her mother called
“Yes, mum!” She replied, with no change in pace.
As she broke through the remaining trees, a grin appeared on her face at the familiar sight of her family’s ikran. The biggest reason why she enjoyed looking after them was that she wasn’t sure if she would ever be able to have one of her own, so looking after them was the closest she could get.
Hearing her parents appear behind her, she started to move forward, greeting all the ikran individually as she made a beeline to the back of the nesting area the ikran’s made for themselves, looking for the ikran without a rider. Getting closer, she noticed the nest was empty.
Tuk spun around, looking at all the ikran, thinking she overlooked her favourite. But she could never. So she counted again and again.
One. Two. Three. Four… Where’s five?
In a panic, she ran forward, running into her father who was tending to Bob.
“He’s gone!” She shrieked, grabbing her father’s hand, “Seze’s gone!”
Jake looked down at his youngest daughter in confusion, gone? What does she mean by ‘gone’? The ikran hasn’t ‘gone’ anywhere in two years without a lot of bribing. Jake looked past all the ikran to see that Seze was in fact ‘gone’. The urgency in Tuk’s voice caught Neytiri’s attention. She passed her mate and daughter to go to Seze's nest, bending down and placing her hand on it. Maybe there will be some heat that’ll indicate how long he had been gone. With some relief, there was. It was still quite warm which told her they had just missed the creature’s take-off.
Just as she stood up, ready to join her family and calm her daughter, a rumble resonated through the air. It was a similar sound the whole village had heard over a week ago, Tuk was the first to run towards the sound, shaking out of fathers grasp. Without hesitation, he chased after her. Neytiri looked over the other ikran one last time before following.
Making it to the beach, the family was met with a sight they could never imagine. Seze, Neteyam’s lonely ikran, named after Neytiri’s companion who she lost in the war with the sky people, face to face with Rìkxi. Barely any space between them. The latter watched the ikran with fury in its eyes. Seze did not look nervous in the slightest, seeming to be standing his ground against the beast that was more than double his size and much, much stronger than him.
Rìkxi made a sound that sounded like he was taking a massive inhale of breath, his head lifting slightly. His mouth began to open, a rumble omitting from his chest.
“Enough!” A strong, unwavering voice echoed through the gathering crowd
In a flash, the Ash Na’vi their son had become fast friends with, stood between the two creatures confidently, holding her hand up to Rìkxi’s face. Rìkxi gave what seemed to be a final look at the ikran before obeying his rider’s silent command.
Tumblr media
Y/n stood between her faithful companion and the unknown ikran, hands raised to show that there was no threat. The last thing she wanted was for Rìkxi to eat the poor creature. Rìkxi looked at the scene in front of him before lowering his head and shuffling back slightly. The ikran behind her nudged its head forward, knocking y/n’s back. The girl turned around to face the ikran, looking curiously as it nudged her again.
Not sure what to do, she looked off to the side where Lo’ak and Kiri had joined the group but kept a distance due to Rìkxi’s presence. Seeing that she wasn’t going to get any assistance, she tried shooing the creature away calmly but it didn’t budge. She looked at Rìkxi over her shoulder and jerked her head slightly up, telling him to return to his part of the island. With a huff, the large beast flapped his wings once, shooting off into the air, unsettling all the sand around them causing those closest to cover their eyes while y/n knew that this action was deliberate.
As Rìkxi left, an older Omatikaya man came forward, his hand holding a smaller child on his left and a woman on his right. Lo’ak and Kiri catching up behind them. The woman touched the ikran’s head, pulling its attention away from y/n, which the girl was very grateful for because was starting to feel uneasy.
The woman stroked the creature's face, before shooing it away. It made a small sound before taking off into the air. Neytiri turned, looking the girl up and down, her yellow eyes studying the girl before her for any signs of danger that could injure her family in any way. Lo’ak stood next to y/n, a smile on his face trying to ease any tension that he sensed.
“Y/n, this is my mother Neytiri and my father Jake Sully. Mum, Dad, this is my new best friend y/n.”
“Nice to meet you, y/n. Lo’ak speaks very highly of you.” Neytiri greeted the girl after a moment's pause.
Lo’ak face seemed to flush a deep blue as his father nodded, also greeting the girl.
“Yes, it’s nice to meet the girl that has been keeping my son out of trouble.” Jake joked, raising an eyebrow at his son, asking him a silent question. Lo’ak’s head shook frantically from side to side.
Y/n ignored the silent exchange and greeted both parents. Tuk looked up at the girl curiously before introducing herself.
“Hello! I’m Tuk! Your hair is really pretty.”
“It is lovely to meet you Tuk and yours is too!” Y/n smiled motioning to the white beads at the end of the young girl’s shoulder-length hair.
Looking over the youngest Sully’s head, y/n spotted Ronal in the distance. The Tsahik had spotted her and was making her way over, like a predator stalking her prey. Y/n flicked her wrist, her fingers brushing Lo’ak’s arm, the boy looked at her in confusion before following her line of sight.
“I should go and check on Rìkxi, make sure he hasn’t threatened anyone else.” She joked, itching to break away from the family as Ronal got closer.
“Right, yes. We don’t want that.” Lo’ak added stiffly.
The girl rolled her eyes, bidding farewell to the family as she walked off hastily towards where Rìkxi should’ve hopefully settled. Just as she disappeared from everyone’s sight, Ronal joined the family, a hand on her hip.
“She’s fast.” The Tsahik commented, “Lo’ak, I will be eating breakfast with her tomorrow morning.”
Before Lo’ak could think of a reply, she walked off to join her mate, Tsireya and their youngest daughter.
The Sully’s made their way back to the marui in mostly silence.
Jake and Neytiri walked in silence and they thought about what they had just witnessed. An ikran greeting another Na’vi it was not familiar with, willingly and refusing to leave?
The sight of the Ash Na’vi girl had taken Neytiri by surprise, there was an air of familiarity about her. Maybe it was the way that she walked, the way she spoke? She wasn’t sure, she couldn’t place it but whatever it was caused her heart to burn with longing. The girl reminded her of someone that was lost.
Jake had seen it almost immediately. Lo’ak had formed a close connection with the older girl, even if he hadn’t noticed it himself, Lo’ak looks up to her. Trusted her. There had been something missing in Lo’ak for a long time and y/n had come along and given him what he needed. Guidance, a support system. Seeing his son in this light had taken a weight off of his shoulders but then that brought on a new thought. Y/n wasn't going to stay here forever and what would that mean for Lo’ak?
Lo’ak head rushed with multiple thoughts at once, y/n’s brief explanation while with Payakan, although he knew that she was withholding some truth from him, he couldn’t find it within himself to feel suspicious of her. And also Neteyam’s ikran. Seze had kept to himself for two years, clearly mourning the loss of his rider but today showed something different. Was this linked to what Neteyam’s spirit meant?
Kiri on the other hand was silent because she was trying to figure this out, she felt as though Eywa was whispering in her ear. She has a feeling that y/n will be important to the family, it can’t just be a coincidence that y/n appeared on Awa’atlu just days after Lo’ak’s experience at the Spirit Tree and them suddenly becoming the best of friends, the pair also sharing similar physical attributes. Four fingers, four toes and although it is not as noticeable, Kiri could see the faint hairs on the older girl's brow bone. It seemed that y/n had stepped in to be an older sister to Lo’ak, taking him under her wing.
Tuk was the only member of the Sully family who was actively talking, some of the members chiming in every once in a while to let her know she was listening. She could sense that everyone was deep in thought but she was just glad that Seze was safe and that she met Lo’ak new friend.
Overall, the whole family had taken notice of Lo’ak’s attitude change. In the week of knowing y/n, parts of his carefree personality had begun to shine through again and it was refreshing to see.
Kiri stopped in her tracks, clearing her throat to get her family’s attention.
"I just remembered I have to do something, I'll be back soon."
Before anyone could respond, Kiri turned and started to walk in the direction they just came from, as soon as she got to the beach, her walk turned into a jog and that jog into a run.
Tumblr media
On her walk over to Rìkxi, y/n was deep in thought. Jake Sully. The man Quaritch had asked … demanded … her father to help him capture so that he could “answer for his crimes.” y/n felt so stupid, why didn’t she put it together sooner “he is hiding amongst the reef people''. Lo'ak had mentioned briefly that his dad was from the stars. Maybe she did know that Jake Sully was here but was choosing to ignore it since she hadn't seen the man in person until today. Out of sight, out of mind maybe?
Suddenly, a shooting pain hit y/n in her chest which caused her to stagger back, almost losing her balance. She quickly composed herself, trying to ignore it so that she could continue her journey but with every step, it became harder to ignore.
Y/n quickened her pace, hoping to reach her destination soon but that plan was thrown to the back of her mind as she stopped abruptly, now feeling lightheaded. She squeezed her eyes closed tightly, clutching her chest while taking a deep breath. Opening her eyes slightly, she could see a few stray villagers staring at her as they passed, keeping a distance but she didn’t expect anyone to help.
The pain was getting more intense, her vision blurring and the sound of her heart pulsating in her ears. She tried walking again but she could tell that she was staggering off to the side. Taking another deep breath, took a deep breath and clenched her jaw and began walking again. After a few more steps, her knees buckled, bringing her down into a squat, her chin tucked to her chest as tears began welling in her eyes. The burning was now unbearable. She felt like she was choking, drowning almost. She was struggling to breathe, it was like her lungs weren’t working. Every breath she tried to take was painful.
She wheezed, rocking forward, her knees hitting the warm sand, the hand not holding her chest reaching out so she didn't faceplant. It was too much. She couldn’t even think. Y/n eyes screwed shut again, her mouth opening to scream for help but no sound other than a whimper came out. Her fingers and toes started to feel cold.
The villagers around her decided to take full notice of the scene before them, but they hesitated with the idea of helping the foreign girl. At the same moment, Kiri came speeding into view. Her eyes widened at the sight of her new friend on the floor and worried villagers gathering, not sure how to react.
“Y/n!” Kiri dashed forward, skidding to a stop next to her friend, “What’s wrong?! What happened?!”
Y/n tried to reply to Kirk’s frantic questions but all she could do was shake her head, she couldn’t bring herself to speak. She could barely hear the girl beside her.Her head was pounding. She was seeing flashes of the ocean being lit up by the bioluminescent plants, beside her, an Omatikaya Na'vi breaking the surface of the water with a grin on his face. Lo'ak? No, not Lo'ak. What the hell is happening?
Kiri looked around at the spectators, feeling annoyed that not one of them stepped forward to help her friend. Giving them the fiercest glare she could muster, Kiri tried getting down to y/n’s height, and lowering herself so that she could see her face. Kiri took note of the hand painfully gripping her chest. Had she been in pain all day and no one noticed?
“Clear the way!” Ronal’s voice boomed as she and Tonowari marched toward the small group.
Kiri scrambled out of the way as Ronal dropped down beside her, pulling y/n’s hand away from her chest.
“Get her up, I will treat her.”
Tonowari nodded at his mate, scooping y/n into his arms, the girl in question trying to resist but ultimately giving up once pain shot from her chest down to her feet. Kiri followed trying to speak to the now quiet girl. Tonowari apologised with almost every step he took and Ronal ahead, trying to conclude how she was going to ease this pain. Y/n head slightly rolled to the side as she looked out to the ocean, Kiri noticing her eyes focusing in the direction of the Cove of the Ancestors.
Tumblr media
As the sun was beginning to set, an avatar hopped across the beanstalk, hoping to make it to the other side without falling to his death. The sights of Pandora were absolutely breathtaking, he was used to seeing them but now, in his new body, everything seemed more amazing. The sights, the sounds, the smells. All the spectacular.
“Kid, you need to come back, you’ll miss dinner.” The earpiece crackled
The avatar rolled his eyes, looking around him, placing his finger on the microphone around his throat.
“Yes Dad, on my way.” He replied in a mocking tone, “I’ll be like 10 minutes, tops.”
“You better, or I’ll have to send someone out for you. Again.”
The avatar continued on his jog before he started to scale the many intertwined vines. This would be so much easier with an ikran, he thought but it was still early days. Reaching the top, he leaped across more branches before running through the camp, doing his best to weave between the different humans and Na’vi moving around.
“Seriously again? Watch it!”
“Sorry, Vic!” He called back, almost running into someone else.
The avatar swung the door open to the laboratory and ducked his head to get through the door, and skidded to a stop.
“Right on time.” Norm stated, looking up from his desk at the young avatar, “Go unlink, I’ll plate you some food.”
The boy walked into an empty room and lay down on a large cot. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see Norm’s avatar ‘asleep’, hooked up to a machine to keep it hydrated and nourished. The boy shuffled his body, getting comfortable and closing his eyes.
The lid of the link unit opened slowly, the young boy sat up and swung his legs over the edge, stretching his arms.
“Victoria said you ran into her… Again. It’s starting to seem like it’s on purpose.” An older man spoke, eyes not looking away from the screen in front of him.
“It’s not, I swear. I’m having trouble stopping and she always seemed to be there.”
“You need to be more careful Spider. I know you're learning but you need to be mindful about those around you.”
“I know Max, I know. I’ll do better next time, I promise.” Spider replied somewhat sincerely. He was trying to be careful but he also did run into Victoria on purpose.
Max nodded looking back at the screen to check if there were any outliers on Spider’s readings. Seeing that everything was normal enough, he ushered the boy off of the link bed and into the communal eating area where a few of the humans were sitting around talking. The boy spotted Norm at the far end, speaking to another scientist.
Sitting down next to him, he began to eat silently, running through the forest all day has built a big appetite that he still wasn’t used to.
“So, how was it today?” Norm questioned as the other scientist left the table.
“Amazing!” Spider swallowed quickly, turning to face the older man, “I managed to run without smashing my face into the floor.”
“Good. That’s good. You’re getting better. But it’s still early days, don’t push yourself.”
“I know, I know. I’m being as careful as possible.”
“So, when are you gonna tell Kiri and Lo’ak about your avatar?”
“I don’t know, I haven’t found the right time.”
“You spoke with Kiri yesterday, right? Why didn’t you tell her then?” Norm questioned, raising the fork to his mouth.
“It didn’t feel right,” Spider shrugged, “she was talking about a new friend Lo’ak had made, I didn’t want to interrupt.”
“Lo’ak made a friend? Good for him, he had been quite down when I last spoke to Jake.” Max added as he sat down in front of Norm, “Jake had been really worried for him, breaking up with Tsireya hit him hard.”
Spider’s head dropped, he didn’t know that Lo’ak wasn’t dating the Metkayina girl anymore. If he was being honest, he didn’t have any idea about how Loak had been doing for about eight months now. The pair hadn’t spoken to one another and Kiri didn’t purposely bring him up in conversation. It made Spider feel guilty, he could tell there was a strain on their relationship but he was too afraid to face it, he was too guilty. Even speaking to Kiri hurt him, he couldn’t even bring himself to speak to Jake, for fear that he would spill his guts out to the man and the consequences.
It was killing him. He wouldn’t dare tell Norm or Max, they would tell the Sully’s in an instant and he is sure that Neytiri would have his head. Not that Spider could blame her. He wasn’t thinking about the consequences at the time but as the days passed on the island, the guilt was eating him alive and the fear was keeping him silent.
“What do you think, Spider?” Norm questioned, nudging the boy out of his thoughts.
“What?”
“I said, we should try and arrange for you to visit Awa’atlu. You haven’t seen them in person in ages and it’ll be better this time because you have an avatar.” Max explained, a gentle smile resting on his lips, “and honestly, I could use the quiet.” He joked
Spider forced out a chuckle, shovelling a forkful of food into his mouth, running through all the possible outcomes that could happen, being face-to-face with the family he betrayed.
Tumblr media
As the sun set and eclipse made itself known, a small group of Txampaysye swam passed through the Cove of the Ancestors and along the base of The Spirit Tree. One broke away from its group and glided off to the left, joining a shimming group of Atokirina’ that was floating peacefully above a glowing mass amongst the swaying plants on the seafloor.
Slowly, the plants separated, allowing the Txampaysye to lower itself down, resting itself across the widest part of the unknown figure. A moment later, air bubbles began to float upwards. The Atokirina’ floated down and landed on a small part of the figure, and as soon as it did that, the unknown shape flinched before curling into a ball. Slowly, the plants on the seafloor made their way back to each other, hiding the mass from any creature that may swim passed.
Tumblr media
Txampaysye - gill mantle, serves as a biological diving suit, feeding oxygen to a bonded Na'vi through their kuru connection/tsaheylu.
Atokirina' - woodsprite, a seed of the Tree of Souls that lives on Pandora (I imagine the Spirit Tree has its own version).

Avatar 3 script leaks
Potential spoilers ahead! If you don't want to know anything about Avatar 3, this is not the post for you. And for those of you who have seen the leaks, this is not new info, I'm like super late with this, I'm just trying to compile all the script pages into one post. Plus there is one page that I feel like has not been discussed enough, hence this post.
Spoilers under the read more, you have been warned!
Okay, first of all, yes, I'm well aware the script leaks might be fake to throw us off, or at the very least no longer true because some rewrites have happened. I get it. But, in this post, I will treat them as an accidental leak, so bear with me.
I think most of you are now aware of the first two pages, I have seen a lot of posts with them, so I'm not gonna dwell too much on those. Here are the transcripts, by reddit user hdk759:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another reddit user, Ereska, was able to transcribe a little bit more from the second page, so combined, these two pretty much give us the whole page:
Tumblr media
Right, so Jake and Quaritch have a little talk about Spider, who can now breathe Pandoran air, and for once these two are not actively trying to kill each other, so that's pretty interesting. What is also interesting is that all the kids are also supposedly there, when they rush to a wounded Neytiri (and on that note, where has she been? Who was she fighting?). Neytiri hugs her kids (excluding Spider, might I point out), then we cut to them all returning to High Camp where Tuk and Mo'at hug. And we have seen that scene in the behind the scenes footage, which is another reason why I really don't think the script is fake.
Note: Avatar Theory also did a video on these script leaks and in the comment section someone mentioned Va'ru is an old name for Tarsem, the new chief of the Omatikaya. So it's not a new character, just good old Tarsem, very wise for his young age :)
Onto pages 3 and 4!
These are sadly harder to read, since a lot of the text is covered, but a twitter user AkumuHoshi did their best to transcribe them too:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's a lot of stuff missing, but I found this screenshot from reddit user BentusFr which is in pretty high definition and you can read more of the text there:
Tumblr media
So we start off with Jake and Neytiri in a Biolab in High camp, looking at Spider, who's probably being looked at by the scientists. Jake talks about how Spider is now in danger and can't stay there, because he will become RDA's target if they find out he can breathe the air, and then Neytiri suggests: "If he is so dangerous [text hidden], you should just kill him." Cool cool cool. Guess she ain't warming up to Spider anytime soon. Jake, understandably, does not like that idea, to which Neytiri replies: "Toruk Makto knows [blurred text, but to me it seems like duty? I dunno, it's one short word, that one made the most sense to me.]"
The rest of the text is too hidden to make much sense of, but we do cut to a different scene - the Tree of Souls. Kiri is trying to connect to Eywa, but gets another seizure and Mo'at has to disconnect her from the tree. And then we have a scene with Mo'at and Kiri, where we find out it was Kiri who made it possible for Spider to breathe the air, and she did so without any sacred trees nearby, she just made the roots to obey her and performed the miracle. She doesn't remember actually doing it, but Mo'at tells her she knows in her heart, and Kiri admits she did it herself. Mo'at then warns her to tell no one about it.
So here's what I want to know, were Kiri and Spider the only ones included in that miracle, or was Jake and the kids, possibly even Quaritch, there to see it? Remember, on the first script page, Jake tells Quaritch "You witnessed it tonight." and then a "long night of horrors and miracles" is mentioned on the second page. So who all knows what Kiri did? Who is Mo'at trying to protect her from?
And finally, we get to the last somewhat readable page, there is still one more that is unfortunately too blurry to be readable, at least I never saw any mention of anything else happening. So, page 5 it is!
I have no idea when the scene on that page happens, could be before the events on the first four script pages we have seen here, could be after. Personally, I think it's before. But it's just a guess. Here's the previous screenshot by BentusFr cropped and rotated to get a better look at it:
Tumblr media
As far as I know, nobody has transcribed the text, and it does get more blurry as it goes, but the beginning is somewhat readable, so here's my best attempt at transcribing it:
VARANG WILLS Quaritch's arm to [text hidden] bulging, as his HAND OPENS and he [text hidden]
WAINFLEET takes a [text too blurry for me to read] untangling his head and arms, [can't read this one] He drops two WILD [blurry and hidden text] slams into the first na'vi to him [hidden text]
Another BOLO entangles his legs and [hidden text]
Honestly, from this point the text becoms too blurry for me to read, I do recognise a word here or there, but can't really make out a sentence from that. However, JAKE is mentioned in the next paragraph, so he's probably also there. Varang also goes on to have a bunch of lines that I sadly can't read. But if any of you can make sense of this text, by all means, feel free to let me know!
So it appears Quaritch and Wainfleet (and possibly Jake) get captured by the Ash Na'vi led by Varang. And somehow, Varang is able to control Quaritch's hand. Tsaheylu, anyone? Though probably not very consensual. But the idea of Ash people being willing to use their kuru for taking control of their enemies is quite interesting, and also really disturbing. And barely anyone talks about this! (And yes, I did make this whole post because of this one snippet of script, sue me.)
So why do I think this scene happens before the whole Spider can breathe Pandoran air miracle? The leaked image from Jon Landau's video. You know, this one:
Tumblr media
Here's Quaritch talking to Varang, still in his RDA military gear, with Spider, Lo'ak and either Kiri or Tsireya (probably Kiri) being held by the Ash na'vi in the background.
What if this is what leads to Wainfleet showing up to help Quaritch, and Jake and probably Neytiri (and other Omatikaya) coming in to save their kids, they fight with Ash na'vi, Neytiri stays behind which might be when she gets injured, while Jake and Quaritch get the kids out of there. And maybe, somewhere along the line, Spider's mask gets broken, they don't have a spare, he starts suffocating and Kiri saves him.
Tumblr media
So yeah. That's my take on it. Thoughts?

When the clock rewinds, would you choose me?
Tumblr media
Jake Sully x Reader
TIME: Set after the Avatar (2009) film.
PLOT: Formerly Intern from RDA, now a specialist in the reopened avatar program of Dr. Grace Augustine, you see the man–turned Na'vi, that was once almost yours.
NOTE: NOT PROOFREAD!!! i just wanted to write what i wanted to read so sorry in advance !!TT
part 2!!!
PRESENT:
YOU ALMOST FEEL DEAD, the cup of coffee in your hand wasn't halfway drunk and you want to vomit on your work papers. Stacks of written reports surround you and the illuminating lights do not help with your drumming migraine in your head. Ever since you've arrived in Pandora, messy memories are what keeps you away from being sane. You've never expected to come back, after the war and Colonel Quaritch destroying the beautiful home of the Na'vi, you were certain that your body will be decaying on the earth that was once loved for. So when an envelope slipped through your broken door at your depressing apartment. You took the opportunity. "Anywhere but on Earth." you thought out of desperation, forgetting someone particular on the planet.
Awoken by a staff member from cryosleep, you're nearing Pandora's atmosphere. You remember the first time you ever did, amazed by even the little things you can see from the ship. You were even more amazed when you step foot on the ground, at the compounds when you noticed arrows at a certain dump truck's wheel. You looked around and saw many trucks, coming back with dirt, and pieces of floral. At that moment, you were innocent. Only wanting the good money the job application stated but little did you know, you would create history.
As soon as you step down, you went straight for the building. Wanting—needing to see your avatar form again, since you left years ago. Memories and adventures were done in that Avatar, an almost new life lived. Dr. Grace Augustine was a truly astounding scientist. She was an inspiration to all and you. You go inside the lab and spot Max. "Long time no see!!" You yell and Max jumps out of surprise, "_____!! It's been years! Didn't think you would come back!" He replies as you pull him in a hug. "I know, I just had to with the opportunity given to me. Where's Norm?" He points to the door where the old Avatars used to rest at. You look at him anxiously, striding to the door as you noticed new equipment in the lab. Yet dust remained on the untouched ones, where Grace used for research. As you push the door open, Norm is found sitting infront of the tubes. Taking a closer look, he was staring at your Avatar with an unrecognizable expression. "Hi Norm," You whisper, seeming like a private moment you disrupted. His shoulders shake upwards and whips his head towards you. Responding with a smile, he stands up to hug you. "_______, hi. How are you? I thought you wouldn't come," You're the first one to pull back, "Were you the one to suggest me? I recall last time, you were the last one to even mention my name at missions." Norm rolls his eyes, "That was 5 years ago."
PAST:
ONE:
You were late to the meeting Colonel Quaritch had set, other soldiers giving you the side eye. You were assigned to his team after splitting the interns to two groups. Though you begged Parker Selfridge to put you to Dr. Grace's instead, you ended up in the harsh skinned group. Quaritch kept explaining the tasks until he gazed out at the back, some guy in a wheelchair. The other soldiers gave him an even meaner stare, you rounded the table and sat beside him. "Hey. Pretty cool planet, huh?" He looks to me and chuckles, "It's a weird one too. You've seen the arrows?" You nod in response, "Where'd you think they've come from, aliens?" Before he could reply, Quaritch dismisses the meeting. The man you were talking to gone. And you didn't even get his name.
.
.
"Hey, ______! How's it going with the camera for the video logs?" a husky voice said behind you, as you position the said camera to a good angle. Jake rolls up beside, checking out your work. "It's good, you probably hit it out of exhaustion one time." you reply as his face becomes a satirical hurt one. "What? I care for the technology here, as I know they are veeeery expensive. You're lying," Both of you bicker for a while about it back and forth 'til you were called out of the room. You exit with a smile on your face.
.
.
You sit on a seat at the cafeteria, it was break time, and all you could think was to eat. Put anything in your mouth if you will. You pick up your spoon when arguments come crashing into the entrance, other employees turning their heads to see. It was Grace and Jake. Obviously. Something about Na'vi language. Something that Jake doesn't know about. Grace dismisses him, says he should move on about it instead. His face falls at the reply but lightens up when he sees you. "Damn marine, you keep messing up huh?" you ask while scooping yogurt from your tray, "Well it's not my fault you're not helping me." he replies as he snatches the cup from your hands. You look at him at shock, "Give it back or I'll steal your wheelchair!"
.
.
You wouldn't want to admit Jake has been good company, the other soldiers disagreeing with your say. He's been the least grumpiest in the squad brought on Pandora, so you're at least grateful for that. Dr. Grace showed him the Avatar, him taking his twin's place. You were amazed, how they made it possible, you didn't know but you also didn't know that you had one too. "______, yours is on the far right. You saw how to link with it so I'll leave you to it," Jake nudges your hand, "Guess I won't be alone then."
You try not to blush at his words.
TWO:
It was Jake's first day to try out his avatar, and yours. You were worried since he didn't have enough knowledge about it, nor he knew what was outside of the compound. Grace scolding him multiple times and Norm shaking his head in disbelief out of Jake's silly nature. You were laughing everytime you see the same scene. As he entered the pod, you quickly went to yours as well. Laying down and adjusting your hair to not get it stuck when it closed, Grace approached you, "Everything good?" You answered with a thumbs up as the door shut, all you remember was opening your eyes due to the bright light. Pointed ears roaming around to where sound resonated and tail swishing out of attention. You sit up to see Jake smiling to you, very blue, as he stands up and runs off.
.
After Jake practiced a few times to navigate in his avatar, (because of him running out of the lab out of nowhere) you, Grace, and Norm went out on a mission. Getting samples for the research the scientists need and you helping them along the way. Jake as a form of protection, Grace argued they didn't need him but persuading them was easy for you.
"I miss this on Earth." You speak out as you follow the science duo with Jake, he looks over to you. Sees your eyes shining with awe as you ogle around the plants, the trees, and to him. "Ours was beautiful too." His hand finding yours to hold, butterflies filling your stomach.
THE CRISIS:
He's lost. Jake is lost and you're with the duo, panting and sweating throughout your body. A Thanator was running after us, Jake getting its attention before. You're worried and you're shaking to find him. Especially that he knows nothing about the forest, so you look back at Grace and Norm, and slowly walk away to find him. A hand hooks your wrist and you knew they wouldn't let you. "He might get himself hurt or even worse—killed? Who cares if it's dark when we got someone out in the wild?" You reason, "He'll survive one night, ______. Trust me." Norm replies as you stand under the big green leaves and the starry bright background. Your shadow casting over with the little light providing to it, the stars opposite to the feeling of dread. Sighing, you decide to trust their word. Walking back to the helicopter.
THE RESOLUTION:
Jake says he would stay with the Omatikaya clan. He explains he had met the olo'eyktan's daughter. Grace approves, Norm is bitter, and you're happy that he's safe. A chance for him to learn about the Na'vi. Everytime he discharges from the pod, he tells you all about the village and you can't help but smile big at his stories. About Tsu'tey and soon-to-be mate, Neytiri. How the Omatikaya people treat him and how the forest is beautiful at a deeper look.
(YOUR) THE PROBLEM:
You don't see much of him anymore. You catch glimpses of him inside, recording a videolog after his journey in the forest. He's getting thinner, he doesn't meet with you at the cafeteria anymore. Feeling down when you wait minutes that turn hours for him to eat beside you, joking about your platter, and still, he doesn't arrive. Leaving you with an empty stomach. He rarely talks to you, and trying you do. When he's out of the pod, you ask him questions but all he does is quickly wheel to the camera to record a video log. Jake greets you yet his expression of a 'happy to see you' is nowhere to be found as he did before. He goes back into the pod without a single other word sent your way. Your heart slowly wearing out off your sleeve, you miss your talks, you miss the laughs, and you miss him.
THE CLIMAX:
The RDA is finally destrotying the Home Tree and the People of the Omatikaya clan freak out, you panic, telling them that they should leave and prepare when Jake and Neytiri come back.
They celebrated the night before, the ceremony of Jake becoming one of them. You're excited to see him, ton congratulate him about his long way of learning and accepting them. Tsu'tey arriving to see the ruinage of a forest the Humans brought and was to discuss about future plans. When Jake and Neytiri come back together, Tsu'tey eyed them suspiciously, "You mated with this woman?" Grace curses and hell breaks loose. You stare at him with shock as he reasons. Your heart finally falling out of you, the pieces shattering one by one on the ground. He doesn't see you anymore. He doesn't see you the way he sees her. So you stand behind the crowd forming, behind the great trees of Pandora, and you stay far from the man you once loved.
THE END:
Quaritch is dead, Grace is Dead, and Jake is reborn as the Na'vi.
You're on your way back to Earth.
And you can't help wanting to pick up the pieces you left on Pandora.

The brothers: ...
Asmo: *stood up, slamming his hands on the table* I can't take this anymore!
Asmo: I want to know what they're doing!
Lucifer: Asmo, sit and calm down.
Satan: It's Beel. They're just probably talking. Right, Belphie?
Belphie: *turns his head away*
Satan: ...
Satan: Belphie?
Belphie: No comment.
Asmo: *his eyes sparkling* Belphie~
Belphie: No. I'm not going to say anything.
Mammon: Yo, before you get intrigued with the kind of relationship they have...
Mammon: Can you ask these royal guards to fuck off?!
Levi: Nah. They won't do that.
--------------------------------------------------
MC: Are you sure I've never done awful things to you? *sniffles*
*found out that Beel referred to them as his "stalker"*
Beel: *chuckles* No. You did the exact opposite of what a stalker would do.
MC: What do you mean?
Beel: You invest on a food delivery service for me.
Beel: You sent me message cards once or twice a week. And you never asked me to reply.
Beel: And because of that, we almost never met. Not until I trespassed in your house while you were sick and convinced you to.
MC: ...
MC: I-I think I have recalled that.
Beel: Really?
MC: Yeah! Like the forehead kisses— *their voice faded*
MC: ...
Beel: ...
MC: *laughs awkwardly* N-No. Not that one. I don't think that even happened. Haha... ha...
Beel: Forehead kisses?
MC: No! I'm sure it was just all my imagination!
Beel: *slowly gets on top of them* You're wrong. *smiles* It did happen. *gently rests his body on them*
MC: !!!
Beel: You were really sick before. *his face getting closer*
Beel: You opened your eyes and you thought you were hallucinating.
MC: ...
Beel: I kissed your forehead like this. *proceeds to do so*
Beel: And then your lips like this.
MC: !!!
Beel: *breaks the kiss and looks at MC's shocked and blushing face* *smiles* The kiss on the lips just only happened now. Heh.
MC: B-B-Beel!
--------------------------------------------------
Beel: *smiling while holding MC's hands in a bear-like way*
MC: *still doesn't recover from what he did* *tries to calm themselves down by holding hands*
Beel: Do you want to go out?
MC: *starts waving their arms up and down*
MC: *paused* But the royal guards are waiting outside...
Beel: Then let's sneak out.
MC: ...
-------------------------------------------------
Levi: Isn't it too quiet?
Satan: Since you've mentioned that, it's already past noon too.
Mammon: And Beel's not here to ask for food?
The royal guards: *getting suspicious*
Lucifer: Belphie, can you check on Beel?
Belphie: Okay. *went upstairs and came back with a troubled look*
Belphie: Lucifer, can you come with me to check if Beel's there?
Lucifer: ...
Lucifer: Why? Didn't you see him?
Belphie: The room looks empty.
The brothers: ...
The royal guards: THE QUEEN'S HEIR IS MISSING!!!
-------------------------------------------------
Queen Rose: *smiles while checking the wedding catalogue*
The butler: Are you not worried, Your Majesty?
Queen Rose: No. They're just staying in a resort not too far from here. *knew because of MC's credit card history*
Queen Rose: Just ask someone to check on them from time to time.
The butler: Yes, Your Majesty.
Queen Rose: And also, what do you think of this?
The butler: *adjusts his glasses* I suggest that you choose a restaurant for the wedding venue.
Queen Rose: Ah, yes. After all, it's the Avatar Of Gluttony. *smiles*
--------------------------------------------------
Beel: *sneezes*
MC: Are you okay, Beel?
Beel: *sniffs* Yes. Get closer so I won't get cold.
Beel: Yes... Just like this.
MC: ...
MC: Um, Beel?
Beel: Yes?
MC: I was just thinking...
MC: W-Would you like to get us a puppy?
Beel: ...
Beel: Let's buy a ring first.
MC: Y-Yes. But a puppy is—
Beel: A ring.
MC: Okay...
Beel: And then we can get as many puppies as we want.
MC: ...
MC: *smiles* Okay!

It All Comes Down to This
TW: mentions of blood and violence, torture, swearing
General Warning: A lot of words, a bit of self-insert, a slight venture into Lesson 13
TLDR: The game is won, but at a horrible price.
"Why did you take us to the library?" I ask him, sitting in one of the armchairs in front of the room's fireplace.
"I like to have deep conversations here," Lucifer explains, occupying the chair across from me.
"Are you sure it wouldn't be easier for me to just defeat you?" Lucifer chuckles.
"Perhaps, but I can't say with confidence that I wouldn't retaliate by reflex."
"And if I died as a result, you'd never be able to face Diavolo again."
"Or myself." Interesting...
"Would you be that affected by my death, Lucifer? I'm sure you've been the cause of many human casualties. What makes me any different?" Silence.
"Is your pride preventing you from answering me?" I ask.
"Partly, yes," he replies quietly.
"You know, we could just sit in silence."
"What do you mean?"
"Well, if we didn't do anything to advance in the game, then your brothers wouldn't be able to return, and as much as I like them, I think we could do a lot better without them." Lucifer smiles as he shrugs.
"I have thought about what my life would be like if I didn't have to contend with my brothers."
"Quiet, probably." Lucifer laughs.
"Yeah. Or, I can have the walls of this house shake with my music."
"And more than one kind."
"Or interpretation." The look in his eyes suggests that he went to the same gutter I did.
"With whom?" My question causes Lucifer to stop smiling, and he seems to retreat back inside himself. Am I making him nervous?
"It's fine, Lucifer," I tell him after a moment. "You don't have to tell me. It's not like we can stay like this forever, anyway." He sighs.
"True. Mammon would cry if he overheard us talking like this."
"So, we have no choice to fall in love with each other."
"Well, I happen to remember a particular group chat where you mentioned that I was your type." He smirks, and I feel my face growing warmer.
"Having a crush on someone isn't the same as loving them." It's a miracle that I didn't stammer as I said that.
"I know that. That's why I want us to have this conversation. How are we to know we're a match if we only go by looks?"
"Are you wanting us to be compatible?"
"If it helps us win the game, yes." A small voice in my head tells me that that's not the only reason, but considering that he's gone quiet twice already, I don't want to push my luck by pestering him about it.
"So, how do you want to go about this?"
"I was thinking we could ask each other some questions and answer as honestly as possible."
"What if one of us doesn't want to answer a question?"
"Then we'll simply say that we don't want to answer it."
"Sounds good to me."
"Alright. I'll go first: how do you really feel about what's going on right now?"
"This is going to sound crazy, but there's a part of me that feels like we're being set up."
"What do you mean?"
"Well, your brothers seem like the type of people that would get together and formulate a plan to get things to go a certain way in order to get what they want."
"And why do you think they would want us to fall in love?" He looks at me expectantly, and I sigh.
"You think I'm being silly, don't you?"
"Yes and no. I understand where you're going with your thinking, but what you may not know is that my brothers are incredibly jealous people, even more than the average demon."
"Is it because they're Avatars?"
"Yes."
"So, would that make you the most jealous one out of the bunch?" He hesitates momentarily, but then answers,
"Again, yes." I need to change the subject before I lose him again.
"How do you feel about all this, Lucifer?"
"I think it's fun."
"Fun?" Lucifer smiles.
"If we relax and try to enjoy this, it might actually make things easier."
"I see. So, you're enjoying yourself, while I'm a nervous wreck. This isn't going very well so far."
"Oh, I don't know. They say opposites attract." Goddamn it, Lucifer. Why do you have to have to go and say things like that when you know how I feel about you?
"I've seemed to have gotten you all riled up, MC."
"How am I supposed to know that you're being serious?"
"Because if I wasn't, I wouldn't be going along with any of this. I would have left you asleep in your room, and I would have shut myself in my office and worked." He's becoming irritated at me, I can tell.
"Sorry, Lucifer."
"I forgive you. It's hard not knowing how the other person feels about you." Growing quiet, he swallows. "I wish I could be more open with you, MC, but my sin makes it nearly impossible for me to reveal my deepest thoughts and emotions. It's taking a lot of my strength to remain seated in front of you, for there's a voice in my head that's yelling at me to run."
"Do you like me, Lucifer?" Another swallow.
"I like what I know about you."
"Is that all you can say right now?" My voice is soft, not wanting to aggravate Lucifer's sin any more than I have.
"Without magical assistance, yes."
"Fair enough. Would it be good for you if we talked about something else?" He visibly relaxes as he replies yes. "How important is your family to you?"
"As much as my brothers piss me off, and as much as I may joke about not wanting them around, they mean the world to me. Their wellbeing is part of the reason why I rebelled against our father." I wonder why Lucifer feels comfortable telling me this, because I get the impression it's something he's not told many other people about it, not even his brothers.
"So, if we were to get in a relationship, would you want me to get along with them?"
"Ultimately, yes. At the very least, I'd want you to be civil with them."
"Would it make you feel better if I told you how I thought about them?"
"Sure."
"I'll start with Mammon: despite everything he's done over the course of my stay here, I do have a soft spot for him."
"Honestly, I do, too. I helped mentor him in the Celestial Realm, and even then, I couldn't help but love the damn rascal."
"Would you say he's like a cute but annoying dog?" Lucifer laughs.
"That's actually a good way to describe him, MC. Maybe I'll change his name on my D.D.D. to 'Fido' or something."
"What about Luke?"
"Oh, he's 'Chihuahua'. I'll be able to tell the difference." I snort in amusment.
"Moving on, I think that Levi's actually a very interesting person. I'd enjoy an afternoon of him showing me every aspect of an anime or game."
"That makes sense. You seem fascinated by knowledge."
"Attracted to."
"Do you find smart people sexy?" I can't help but snicker a bit. "It's a valid question."
"I suppose so, yes," I say once I compose myself.
"Good to know. That must mean Satan's right up your alley, then."
"Knowledge can take the form of all sorts of things, Lucifer. It doesn't just have to come from books."
"I see."
"That doesn't mean that I don't like Satan, though, because I do. I could chill in his room for hours."
"That doesn't surprise me. What about Asmo?"
"When he's not being full of himself, I see someone that I'd like to be friends with, but he puts up this wall of pretentiousness and I can't deal with it for long periods of time."
"So far, it seems as though our opinions about my brothers are pretty similar. Now, at the time that you made the pact with Beel, you told me that he was the only one that you had specifically gone after with that purpose."
"Yes..." Where is he going with this?
"Do you still feel the same about him now as you did then?" I have to tell him about the shift in my relationship with Beel. Otherwise, he's probably going to force it out of me, and I don't imagine the process would be gentle.
"Well...Beel and I have sort of become friends with benefits."
"When?" Lucifer looks serious, but at least he appears calm.
"He asked me to film him as he was working out one day, and then the next day he asked me to spot him, and things just kinda progressed from there."
"Well, at least it's him." Huh? That was not the reaction I was expecting him to have.
"What do you mean?"
"He served as one of the Celestial guards. He could be trusted to protect anything and everything he was told to. Still can. So, I know you're in good hands where that's concerned."
"Didn't you say a few minutes ago that you were the most jealous out of your brothers?"
"I don't really see my brothers as competition, not where you're concerned." Did he...? There's no way...is there?
"I think it's time to change the subject." Once again, Lucifer smirks.
"Nervous, are we?"
"Lucifer..." He puts his hands up in playful defeat.
"Alright, alright. You've not pushed when I was uncomfortable, so I will consider your boundaries as well."
"Thank you."
"Since I have a fair idea about how you feel about my youngest brother, I think we can draw this part of the discussion to a close." That's good, especially given the fact that Belphie's probably hiding somewhere in this house, waiting to pounce out at any moment. "Now, would you be interested in knowing my type?" Not the direction I was expecting us to go next, but it's fine.
"Sure."
"I know I mentioned in the group chat that I agreed with your assumption that I liked anyone I fell in love with, but that only scratched the surface. You see, the people--or souls--that I'm most attracted to are pure, genuine, and worthy of respect."
"So, not Diavolo." Lucifer chuckles.
"No, not Diavolo. Although that hasn't stopped me at times."
"Don't tell me..."
"Yes."
"Really?" He nods his head. "And he didn't force you using his mark?"
"Well, sometimes he did, but sometimes I came to him voluntarily."
"You know your brothers are going to give you shit if they found out."
"Which is why you're not going to say anything to him." He's giving me the "you-better-do-what-I-say-or-I'll-punish-you" look, so I know he's not joking.
"Understood. Have you ever been romantically involved with anyone else?"
"Love wasn't really a thing I experienced in the Celestial Realm. At least, not the individual kind you're talking about. Everyone was pretty much linked with everyone else at the same time. Since I've become a demon, I've had plenty of flings with lower demons, witches, and ordinary humans, but the closest thing I've come to a serious relationship up until now was a period of time where I was involved with a reaper."
"I can see you dating a reaper." He shakes his head.
"Aesthetically and sexually, it worked, but we brought out the worse in each other. It was a very toxic situation for both of us." He pauses. "How about you, MC?"
"This might sound lame, but other than Beel, a guy that I went on a few dates with, and a guy that I made out with once, there really hasn't been anyone like that in my life. Unless you count cats as romantic partners." Lucifer develops a look of concern.
"Please tell me you haven't..." Oh my god. He thinks I'm like Shane Dawson.
"No, no, no! It's nothing like that! I just have a very special connection with one of my cats back home, that's all." That relieves Lucifer.
"So, you have a familiar."
"Kind of."
"Those are very useful creatures to have."
"That's what my dad says."
"He's a wise man." We reach a good break in the conversation, and we sit in comfortable silence for a few minutes.
"Lucifer?" I eventually ask.
"Yes, MC?"
"How practical would it be for us to actually date? I mean, I'm just an exchange student, and you're Diavolo's right-hand man, for better or for worse. Wouldn't we be too busy to spend any quality time together?" He reaches over and places his hand on top of mine.
"I promise you that, no matter how busy our lives may get, I will always make time for you." I would have savored the sweet moment if it weren't for me catching a glimpse of glowing purple eyes in a dark corner of the room behind Lucifer.
He's here.
"MC?" Lucifer asks. "What's wrong?" The question causes tears to well up in my eyes.
"I'm sorry, Lucifer."
"What do you have to be sorry for?"
"For not being strong enough to stop it from happening." Even though my answer is vague, Lucifer seems to understand exactly what I mean, for he slowly turns his head towards the direction of the glowing eyes.
"Please don't kill me," I whimper as blue light begins surrounding him.
"Do you have any idea what you've done?!" Surprisingly, he yells that question at the silent Belphegor, not at me. "He's going to kill us all!"
Suddenly, the library disappears. I find myself in a room full of windows. Each window reveals a horrible sight.
Mammon's chained up in the air just out of reach of a golden key.
Video game monsters kill Levi over and over again.
Satan's surrounded by a circle of Lucifer's taunting him.
An endless stream of beings mutilate Asmo's body and do other unspeakable things to him.
Beel's tied to a chair and gagged, forced to watch people feast as they wave food at his face.
Belphie's attached to a device that forces his eyes to stay open as a cacophony of various object occurs all around him.
And in the center of the room are Lucifer and Diavolo. Lucifer screams in horror as Diavolo laughs maniacally.
This is all my fault. I failed to control myself, and now this is the future I've created for the brothers.
Of course. The knife. I can end this.
Pain. Red. High-pitched screams. Loud confusion.
"I'm going to tear him limb from limb!"
Pure rage. Quick, heavy footsteps. Shock. Many hands.
"Out of my way!"
Brute force. Kicking. Fists. Yelling.
"All of you, get out of here this instant!"
"Well, this wasn't the family reunion I was expecting."
"You bought your freedom at the cost of our lives! Do you think that's worth gloating about?!"
More yelling.
"Why would I listen to you when you're the one who betrayed us?!"
Weightlessness. Pitch black.

Ok but imagine one of the brothers just following you all over in the human world after the exchange program
But he finds how horrible they treat you and it's either he brings you back to Devildom, or you ask him to take you back
Warning!! May be triggering to some readers, please read at your own risk!!
-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-
Lucifer
"I left my work and I never would have expected this kind of behavior towards you." The eldest stated, sitting at the edge of your bed with crossed arms.
Sighing in defeat, you sat on the floor and looked up at him with tired eyes.
"It's not like I haven't done anything wrong, it's just that some people pick on others for their own entertainment." You responded.
"They're immature."
"And you're not?" You asked with a small grin plastered on your face.
He scoffs at you, "I'm the eldest of my brothers. I hold a huge responsibility, having fun is a hard matter to come by."
You didn't bother replying, and the room was enveloped with silence.
"...would you like for me to bring you back to Devildom for a break?" He offered.
You met his eyes in slight hope, "is that ok?"
Nodding in confirmation, he answers you.
"Of course."
Mammon
"If it weren't for ya, I woulda jumped them already." He complained with a deep frown.
You nod, "i'm sorry."
It took him a moment to realize as he turns to you confused. "Why are you apologizing?"
"What-"
"Take that back right now. You ain't done nothing." He cut you off with furrowed eyebrows.
"..." you look at him dumbfounded.
"Listen, MC. You should've told us, mostly me, but if you said something before you left, then maybe I coulda asked Lucifer to-" he pauses and stares at you.
"You didn't wanna bother, did ya?"
You couldn't form words, so you only ended up nodding as an answer.
Sighing in frustration he smacks your head lightly.
"And I thought I was dumb." He mutters to himself before shaking his head.
"Whatever bothers you, bothers me too. So there's no point in not tryin-" he cut himself off and looks away, clearing his throat.
"I-I mean, it's not like I want ya problematic or anything... it's just that... I don't like how you're treated." He excused with a faint blush forming on his cheeks.
"We already said that the house of lamentation is your home too! You're always welcomed there..." he trailed off before sighing in defeat.
"I can't believe i'm doing this. J-just... it's your choi-"
You smiled before telling him, "take me home."
He blinks as what you said caught him off-guard.
"Really?"
You giggle and confirmed. "It's not like there's much left for me here anyway."
He laughs, but soon yelped when you take hold of his hand.
Looking away in slight embarrassment, he mumbles.
"Yeah, home..."
Leviathan
He spams his controls, half of his focus on the game, and the other half had his mind stressed out over your well-being.
"You've ENDURED this?" Levi started, turning to you the moment he finished his game.
You stare at him confused. "Yes..?"
He watches you with a deep frown. "Can't you just abandon them? They've done nothing but hurt you."
"And where will I go if I do?" You asked him.
He answered, "Home!"
Smiling at him amused, you asked another question. "And where is that, 'home'?"
He pauses and blushes slightly. "Now you're just teasing me..."
You giggle before you pulled him into a hug, making him flinch.
"Y-you don't even look bothered at all." He pointed out, if it weren't for the background music of his game, you probably would have heard his fast heartbeat.
"Because it's more bearable now that I have my Lord of Shadows with me."
He didn't respond to you, so you look up to see him a blushing mess.
"You're not joking... are you? Out of all of my brothers, you're not just doing this for fan service, right?" He asked for reassurance.
"Now who was the one that followed me here? For someone that calls me normie and avoids me, you're suddenly here."
"T-that's..." he stuttered, looking away from you as if he was desperate to look for an answer on your walls.
You laughed before giving him a kiss on the cheek.
"It's time to go home, Levi."
Satan
"Hey Satan..." you called out to the blonde demon, your head resting on his lap as he plays with your hair.
"Hm?"
"Do you... think I could call the house of lamentation my home?" You asked, staring into his emerald eyes.
He gazes down at you before smiling. "Of course. It was, and always will be your home."
You turned slightly to inch closer to his warmth, catching him off-guard.
"Then what if I asked for you to take me back?"
"That will be arranged. You don't have to deal with these mortals, I have a special gift waiting at their doorstep." He responded, leaning down to kiss the side of your head.
"So no one really does get pass the avatar of wrath." You joked.
He chuckled as he let you sit up.
He held your hand for comfort before giving every part of your face a kiss.
He wasn't the type of person to often show love in this manner.
But it seemed as if you needed it at a time like this.
Placing one last kiss at your neck, he nuzzles his head further in it.
You could feel him smile on your neck, you stroke his hair as his other arm has wrapped itself around you.
"Shall we go home?"
Asmodeus
As he was combing your hair, he rants about the treatment you've been receiving.
"Why do you let them do that darling? They don't deserve to treat you like trash. It's not as if they're any better."
He frowns in distress, "some nerve they have."
"There's no point in fighting for something you think you don't deserve." You dismiss it with a sigh.
He raises an eyebrow and looks at you through the mirror in disapproval.
"That won't do, you're only giving them more of a reason to stomp on you. You're supposed to be treated with respect." He reasons.
You smile at him and he stops for a moment.
"You're just gonna let them?"
"Remember when you kept asking me to come back to Devildom with you?" You tried changing the subject.
He furrows his eyebrows before placing the comb down and putting a hand on the side of his waist.
"If you're considering to come back, at least let me give them a goodbye gift before we leave. I'm not taking no for an answer."
You smile and shook your head.
"There's no stopping you when you're like this... but don't overdo it, you don't like getting your hands dirty, right?"
He giggles and kisses your cheek. "Oh darling, i'm a demon. I'm bound to be harsh no matter how I dislike it."
Beelzebub
Both of you were silent for a moment.
He opened a packet of biscuits and fed you a piece before eating the rest.
"Now I get why you hated it here." He started before you rested your head on his shoulder.
"Right." You responded.
The 6th-born stared at you with eyes of sympathy.
"Don't look at me like that, Beel. I don't like being pitied." You pointed out with a frown.
"I know, i'm sorry. I couldn't help it." He said.
"Do you want to eat something?" He suggested as a way to comfort you.
You gave it a little thought before smiling longingly.
You then answer him, "A homemade meal back in Devildom sounds nice..."
His eyes lit up from the mention of a meal before he stood up.
"Then let's do just that."
Belphegor
He comforts you with a deep frown before letting out a bitter laugh.
Turning his gaze away from you, he clutches onto his cow pillow.
"Humans... are as sinful as they always were." He muttered as he stood up.
Tapping your shoulder, you look up at him with bloodshot eyes.
"Let's go."
You asked him with a hoarse voice, "to where..?"
He stares at you for a moment before patting your head gently.
"Back home with us. Just like how you should've been."
He pauses for a moment before cupping your chin.
"But you don't have to come back with me if you don't like it. It's your choice." He assured with a small smile.

Love For The Faceless
Corpse Husband x Youtuber!Reader(Female)
Warnings: Swearing
Genre: Fluff
Summary: Y/N is a YouTube gamer who has recently gained a much larger following thanks to the streams she does with her friends. Naturally, considering her faceless and bodiless nature, people are starting to get curious about her. When she finally follows her friend Corpse’s example, a lot more than her hands is revealed.
Requested by anon, you know who you are 😉 Thank you so much for placing a request and hope this fic fulfills the expectations you have for it.
“Hey!“ I greet the lobby as I finally hop into the Discord call after quickly saying ‘hi‘ to my audience.
I’ve been a YouTuber for four years now and I’ve only recently started streaming, encouraged to do so by my best friend Rae. She’s the one who got me in multiplayer games such as Among Us and Phasmophobia which led me to meet her amazing gaming squad that consists of some of the most famous names on the platform. They are all wonderful people and I will forever be in Rae’s debt for introducing me to them. However, becoming friends with Felix, Sean and the rest of the team brought not only a more fulfilled life, but also a small boost in following. Who am I kidding, it wasn’t small. It was overwhelming, terrifying even.
My YouTube channel had a little over a million subscribers at the start of quarantine and now....now it’s closer to three million. Speaking of three million, I’m about to reach it any day now and it’s really hard to believe. I’m a gaming youtuber and I’ve never considered changing my genre despite expecting to not get any attention whatsoever, with all the big names on the platform. I was convinced not even as many as a hundred people would stumble across my videos and now here we are.
My OG subscribers are very supportive of my sudden growth and are defending me when my newer fans ask for a face reveal or whatnot. While we’re on that topic I might have to mention that not even my YouTube friends, and that includes Rae have seen my face. I’ve been faceless and bodiless for the entirety of my time on social media. Some claim I do it to grab more attention or for dramatic effect, but the reason is beyond that. I’m not shallow. Actually, shallow people are the reason I don’t show my face. I’ve never been the prettiest, but my middle school bully thought that I wasn’t lacking self confidence enough. As a result, I ended up with a not so handsome scar on my right cheek that starts from the corner of my mouth and nearly misses my eye. Yeah, it’s a long and pretty noticeable scar that has thankfully become less and less obvious as the years have progressed. Still, it’s not something I’d like to show to my viewers.
Eight ‘hi’s greet me back, each making my smile grow wider. “Sorry I’m late guys. Technical difficulties.”
“Don’t worry.“ Rae’s voice dominates over the rest, “Corpse still isn’t here so we’re waiting for him.“
I mute myself on the Discord call and take a look at my comments. I’m most flattered by the comments about my voice. Seeing as how they don’t have much to compliment about me other than my content, they make the nicest comments about my voice, personality and humor. Those comments are the ones who warm my heart most. Even when people in my day to day life compliment my appearance I can’t find it in me to believe they are being genuine. I’d like to believe these amazing people are being one hundred percent honest when they tell me they like me for who I am and not for what I might look like.
“Sorry I’m late guys.“ A deep voice causes me to even physically jolt, switching my focus from the comments to the Among Us lobby where my eyes land on the newly materialized black avatar.
“Hi Corpse.“ Rae greets him.
“Hello mister who broke Twitter!“ Sean laughs, provoking the laughter of the rest of the players.
“Yeah, congratulations man. That’s a big deal.“ Felix chimes in.
“Thanks guys, but I think you’re forgetting we’re talking about a picture of my hand.“ Corpse chuckles timidly. I have noticed how shy he gets when someone gives him a compliment - like a snail slowly withdrawing in its shell. I find it adorable.
“That’s what makes it even better!“ I unmute my mic, sending my own congratulations.
“While we’re on that topic...“ Rae begins, waiting for the rest of us to shut our traps, suggesting she has something important to say. “Y/N, do you ever plan on doing a reveal like that? Not a face reveal. Just a body part reveal.“
I have no problem talking about the subject with friends but I get nervous when I’m supposed to discuss it with my fans. Seeing as how everyone, including myself, is streaming right now, I get a bit of a stutter in my speech. “Haven’t thought about it yet. But I guess a body part reveal is harmless.” I cringe immediately after letting the words leave my mouth, “That sounds so weird.”
Rae knows that I’m not too fond of my face, but I haven’t told her about my scar yet. I let almost all people I’ve met online think I’m using my lack of appearance for effect. For the mystery of it all. Mysteries attract people which equals attention. Attention equals views and the domino effect continues.
“Just a suggestion. No pressure.“ Rae adds quickly, knowing full well I get anxious when the subject is brought up in front of cameras. “Let’s get this game started, shall we.”
                                                          * * *
The idea dwells in my mind, sitting on the back burner even after I disconnect from the Discord call. I’m sitting in my gaming chair, which was a gift for my two million milestone, and weighing out the pros and cons of the action Rae suggested I take.
“It’s a picture of your fucking hand, dummy. How bad can it turn out?“ I say out loud, shaking my head at my indecisiveness. “You’ll be fine.”
In a blur, two pictures are already posted on my Instagram. The first one captioned ‘Took a leaf from my friend’s book. Did I do it right @ corpsehusband?’ and the second ‘Thanks, Rae. These are on you.’
Rae’s POV
As I’m watching a movie in my living room, I get a notification from Instagram, informing me that Y/N has posted for the first time in a while.
I scoff, “More like the first time in forever.”
The first thing that comes to my mind is the possibility of her reaching that three million milestone that’s been long time coming. I bring the glass of water that’s sitting on my coffee table to my lips, taking a sip as I tap the notification. The picture I see makes me hurry to put the glass back down so I don’t drop it. Y/N’s hand. Her fingers are covered with several thin rings each. And here I thought Corpse had too many rings, this girl has at least two on every finger!
Then my eyes land on the second picture she has posted only minutes after the first and my heart drops. I struggle to get the water that’s been sitting in my moth down my esophagus while my mind is struggling with the task to comprehend the picture I’m looking at.
Another hand is resting on top of Y/N’s. A hand also covered in rings but fewer and larger. The nails are painted black.
I think I know who it belongs to.
Before I can even finish the thought, I’m dialing Y/N. She picks up after the second ring, sound cheery as ever as she greets me. “Hey Rae!”
“Don’t you ‘Hey Rae’ me!” I practically scream. I hate being kept in the dark about anything ever so this is just driving me mad. On top of all, she’s my best friend, for fuck’s sake. “Is that Corpse in the photo with you?!”
“Ugh....“ the cheeriness to her voice is all but gone now.
I go on with my rant, not giving her the time to reply. Not that she would reply. I bet she doesn’t know what to say. “So he knows where you live?! Or was the picture taken at his place?! He knows what you look like?! You have seen him! He has seen you in real life but me, your best friend, haven’t!!! You are breaking Covid 19 protection laws to take pictures?! Are you fucking serious, Y/N?!”
There’s a long moment of silence which frustrates me even more but I literally have run out of things to yell and the power to be angry. I mean, I still am, I just can’t express it.
“Rae, sweetheart, please calm down. You’re scary when you’re mad.“ This girl has some fucking nerve! She’s on the verge of laughing!
“Listen here you...“
“Rae, please stop scaring my girlfriend.“ That oh so distinguishable, oh so familiar voice interrupts me.
I am flabbergasted, for a lack of a better term.
“Now that we’ve got you quiet, I can explain.“ Y/N pics up the conversation, “Corpse and I have been dating for six, almost seven months now. We started dating around Easter after talking for quite some time. We moved in together at the end of September. All thanks to you, Rae. You’re the best.” She pauses to breathe in real quick, “There, all caught up?“
I’m in no less shock than I was before she explained. Actually, I think I might be even more confused now. It all just feels like a fever dream. “Yes...no. I don’t fucking know! I need details, Y/N!”
“Details later.“ Corpse makes his presence known once again, “We’re watching Family Guy right now. Talk to you later.“
“Love you, Rae!“ Y/N calls out before the line goes dead.
My arm goes limp, dropping my phone on the couch next to me.
“Motherfuckers” I mumble under my breath.
Y/N’s POV
It’s been a week since Rae has stopped talking to both Corpse and me. I know she just needs some time to cool off. In the meantime, the rest of our friends were informed and, as oppose to Rae, were nothing but supportive and overjoyed. I bet Rae feels the same way though. Sean, Dave and the rest of the gang have confirmed that she’s incredibly happy for us and says she noticed a spark between me and him since day one, but she can’t help but be mad at us, and especially me, for not telling her sooner.
“Any regrets?“ I remember Corpse asking me when we hung up on her after dropping the bomb.
“Not being able to see her face when she saw the picture.“ I beam at him, feeling as content as ever.
He laughs, agreeing with me before leaning down to kiss me.

Mako x Fire Nation Princess Series: Part Four
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You and Mako decide to do something special to mark the one year anniversary since you met and travel to Republic City for a holiday. Everything is going great...until someone sees it as a chance to attack the Princess of the Fire Nation.
Part One Here
Part Two Here
Part Three Here
Part Five Here
_______
Your nine-month anniversary was soon approaching and Mako had an idea for it. He suggested you come visit Republic City, it was close to a year since you’d met in that exact city so he thought it would be a nice thing to do. Not to mention Mako was becoming more and more serious about moving to the Fire Nation so it’d be a good idea to visit while he still lived there. So you agreed and then moved on to the biggest hurdle, convincing your family.
The first person you approached was your mother. She’d always been lenient with your freedom and she was a big Mako fan so she was a good person to approach first. Your mother agreed a holiday away together would be nice but also warned you that your father might not agree and would claim it was too dangerous. However your mom was sneaky and mischievous so she advised you to speak to your grandmother before your father. If the Firelord approved then there wasn’t much your father could say against it. So you went straight to Firelord Izumi.
Your grandmother usually had a tea break around 3 pm every afternoon so you and Mako made your way to her office. You agreed it’d be a good thing for you to speak to her one on one so Mako just came for the moral support. “You’ve got this” he smiled at you and you nodded “I’m getting us that holiday if it’s the last thing I do”. Mako chuckled “well please don’t actually sacrifice your life for it”. “So don’t challenge my grandmother to an angi kai?” you asked pretending to be confused and Mako shook his head smiling “no don’t do that”. “Got it” you nodded and with a grin you knocked on your grandmother’s door.
Izumi called for you to come in and smiled as soon as she saw you. “Y/n, what a lovely surprise. What brings you to my office at such a boring hour?”. You laughed “coincidentally something remotely serious” you replied and your grandmother feigned shock. “Don’t tell me you’re actually embracing your future role?”. “No we're not there yet” you admitted and your grandmother smiled “well there’s plenty of time for that. In the meantime come and sit. I’ll get us some tea and you can tell me what’s on your mind”. Once you had a steaming tea in front of you, your grandmother smiled “now how can I help?”. “Well I wanted your permission for a trip Mako and I were thinking of taking. You see it’s our 9 month anniversary soon and almost to the same date marks the first time we met a year ago so we were thinking of going back to that spot to celebrate”. “To Republic City?” Izumi asked and you nodded. "I know you're worried about my safety but Mako is sure we can get Lin Beifong’s support and Tenzin has offered to let me stay in his home with him, his family and the Avatar so i’d really be very safe. Plus that far away from the Fire Nation nobody should even recognise me! Even if they did Mako and I are both skilled and he’s promised he’ll ensure I get back to the Fire Nation safely. We’ll protect one another I promise!". Izumi paused "is Mako here?". You nodded "he’s outside". "Bring him in" she said and you called his name. Mako appeared waving awkwardly "hi". Izumi nodded in reply “this visit to your city and y/n’s plan to stay with Tenzin, do you live with Tenzin yourself?". "No, I live on the mainland but it's not far and the island is very well guarded. It has...". Izumi nodded "yes but what about your apartment? I’m under no pretences that the two of you won’t be together 24/7 and so y/n will be staying over at your place more than at Tenzin’s". Your grandmother was perceptive and both Mako and you blushed. Mako recovered first "my apartment is on one of the top floors of a popular towerblock. It's in a good neighbourhood and lots of my neighbours are from the force so no criminals would want to come into our building". Izumi frowned "that's not enough...you mentioned Lin could help, would she be willing to have some officer patrol the building?”. Mako nodded “i’m pretty sure yeah, I can send her a fire hawk straight away”. “Good, you’d also have a task force of Fire Nation guards too who would follow you everywhere which is unnegotiable, would that be acceptable?”. You and Mako nodded before you paused “wait does this mean...you’ll let us go?”. Izumi smiled “if Lin Beifong herself is part of your security team then you couldn’t be in safer hands. I’ll give this my blessing and speak to your father”. You and Mako burst in excitement and rushed to thank your grandmother. She brushed away your thanks and told you to have a good time.
So two weeks later you were on your way to Republic City just as you had been a year ago. This time however you wouldn’t dream of ditching your company. You and Mako watched as the city came closer and closer and Mako got more excited with every mile covered. “I can’t decide on what to show you first!” he cried “the park, the arena, the docks? The Fire Nation district? There’s just so much!”. You laughed “whatever you decide will be perfect” but apparently your first stop had already been decided for you. Lin Beifong was waiting for you on the air pad and she immediately launched into an extensive talk of how this weekend would go. She was strict but fair. The two of you could go anywhere you wanted in the city but no dodging guards and you must tell them where you were at all times. Lin was not adding a royal assassination to her record.
So, after a royal lecture, you and Mako were free. Mako decided that the best thing to do would be a quickfire tour of all the tourist attractions before heading to dinner with his friends. So you had a busy first day. You saw everything and anything remotely touristy. You visited Aang Memorial Island, Yue Bay, Little Ba Sing Sei, Kyoshi Bridge, Harmony Tower, Avatar Korra Park, had a tour of the Pro-Bending Arena (where Mako attracted a lot of attention which made him blush adorably) and of course the Spirit Wilds which were the most beautiful thing you’d ever seen. Then the two of you headed over to the Fire Nation district to meet his friends for dinner. They’d chosen a Fire Nation restaurant to make you feel more at home and you loved how thoughtful Mako’s friends were. Korra and Asami were already outside waiting when you arrived. They spotted you and rushed over seizing the two of you in a hug before asking you what you thought about everything you’d seen. Mako predicted Bolin would be late so you went inside and got a table while you waited for him. You knew Bolin had arrived when Mako was put in a headlock meant to be a hug. Apparently Bolin still didn’t know his own strength and nearly crushed Mako’s windpipe before Opal told him he was hugging too tight again. After that Bolin gave you an equally bone-crushing hug and Opal gave you a much gentler but still lovely one.
Your table was the loudest one in the whole restaurant and you loved it. Everyone chattered happily and a lot happened. Old stories were shared, new details were added and you all caught up in each other’s lives. You helped everyone pick Fire Nation food and it was a very memorable occasion. After a fair few drinks had been consumed Korra challenged Bolin to an arm-wrestling match to work out who was the strongest (according to Mako and Asami this had happened several times) and Korra won to the fury of Bolin who placed his fists down so hard he made everything in the restaurant shake. You had a really good night but the restaurant had to close sometime so after paying your hefty bill and adding a good tip for the tears and violence courtesy of Bolin and Korra you all left.
It was quite late, you’d apparently been in the restaurant for hours and so Mako suggested you head back to his. You agreed, stopping to get Fireflake hot chocolates and strolled calmly through the streets of the city. Mako chuckled suddenly “you know it was around this time a year ago wasn’t it?”. You smiled “it was...let’s walk past where we met?”. Mako agreed and you walked arm in arm through the bustling city. You found the same building and Mako smiled “if I’d have known who I was going to meet that night...”. “You’d have run for the hills?” you asked chuckling and Mako smirked “not at all. That night changed my life for the better or should I say you did”. You blushed “you changed my life for the better too. I always thought I’d be paired off with some boring Fire Nation guy and then I stumble across this amazing one while ditching my guards...I liked you from the moment I saw you”. “You did?” Mako asked and you nodded “I’ve seen a lot of Fire Nation men but you stood out, that’s why I knew you were different. Your Earth Kingdom heritage showed and you were honestly the most beautiful man I’d ever seen. I didn’t need your help ducking those guards but when a hot guy walks over to you and offers you his coat, you take it”. Mako laughed blushing in a way that had nothing to do with the spicy hot chocolate. Mako stumbled over his words trying to think of a reply before he just gave up. “Cat got your tongue?” you asked and Mako blushed “I just never know what to say when you compliment me. What do you say when a girl like you calls you hot? 9 months and I still haven’t worked that out”. You smiled “you don’t have to say anything” and leant up to kiss him. That Mako had gotten used to. He kissed you back immediately and you wrapped your arms around his neck to get closer. The two of you forgot there was anyone else in the world and got lost in one another. Finally Mako separated for breath and panted looking at you with dilated pupils. “If you wanted to continue this my apartment isn’t too far from here...” he said a blush appearing on his cheeks once again. You smiled “let’s go” and put your hand in Mako’s.
Mako led you to his apartment building and you nodded to the Fire Nation and Republic City guards as you passed. You took the stairs and got to Mako’s apartment quickly. You had a very brief lookover of the apartment before Mako captured your attention and you were wrapped in his arms once more. Suddenly the situation you were in dawned on you and it made you really happy. You were here sharing a private sweet moment with your boyfriend who you cared for dearly. It felt so nice kissing Mako here in his apartment hidden away from everyone. There were few guards and you were just alone in a city with your boyfriend, privacy a royal couldn’t dream of. You weren’t the heir to the throne or the future of the Fire Nation at this moment, just a normal girl. Then there was a loud noise outside the window.
Mako broke the kiss but didn’t move away from you. He was several stories up so there shouldn’t be any noise from outside this high up. "What was that" you asked and Mako frowned. He moved away from you and opened the blinds to see a guard from upstairs tumble off the roof. Mako jolted and closed the curtains. "Y/n I think we need to go". He took your hand and pulled you away from the window. In the hallway you heard a distinct thump and Mako crept to the door. "Mako what is it?". "There’s someone out there" he said "I'll go out and see who it is, you hide and...". "What no way" you cried outraged. "Y/n they're here for you". "So I abandon you? No way" you repeated adamant you wouldn’t leave Mako. "But y/n you're the future Firelord I'm...". "You're Mako!" you cried "you matter just as much as me, you have family and a little brother and friends...I'm not sacrificing you, we go out together or both stay here". Mako went to argue when the door was thrown open. Mako rushes in front of you and you both prepared to fight when you saw their faces. "Jazak?" you asked recognising the man in front and Mako tensed “you know him?”. You nodded “he’s Okum’s father”. “Princess” Jazak nodded “you’ll forgive me if I don’t bow”. “What do you think you’re doing?” Mako yelled and the man shrugged “finally taking a stand. For too long this family has ruined the Fire Nation. It all started with her great grandfather ruining all of Firelord Ozai’s hard work and with each generation they’ve got worse and worse. We thought with the right person by her side she’d get things back on track but you couldn’t even pick the boy chosen for you could you?”.
You glared "so this all because I rejected Okum?" you cried and Jazak shrugged. “It didn’t start from that but it was the catalyst that made us realise your bloodline needs to be corrected. So it's ironic the boy you chose over him will be taken down at the same time as you...see if you’d have chosen my son you’d be married by now and all would be well but you chose this" Okum’s father said featuring at Mako "an ex-con with no respectable lineage and your family encouraged it! Actually allowed you to leave the fire nation with him...that was too good a chance to miss so we came too. Your family are wholly to blame for what's going to happen to you". "Just try touch her" Mako spat. The men beside Jazak laughed. There was only two of you and 6 attackers at least, probably more on the way...how could you fight them all? However Jazak must’ve seen something in Mako because he hesitated. “You know it doesn’t have to end with your death” Jazak told Mako "If you step aside we won’t kill you. Plus we don’t even want to kill her, we just want to ransom her but if you move to protect her then we will kill you. Your brother won’t even find your body and you will be forgotten all alone". You gripped Mako’s arm "Mako it’s okay" you said concerned for his life but Mako jumped violently "No it’s not, there’s no way I'm letting them take you even if it does kill me but trust me I don’t plan on going down easily”. You sighed "but Mako I don’t want you to get hurt for me!". "I could say the same for you” Mako smiled sadly "so there’s only one solution, we stick together and neither of us gets what we want". You frowned "but I'm not worth your life". Mako shrugged "I honestly can’t think of a better cause than the girl I love". You laughed in shock. You and Mako had skirted around the word before but this was the first time either of you had said. "The girl you..." you blushed and Mako nodded "I was planning on telling you soon but I guess now is as good a time as any. I love you so there’s no way I'm letting them take you". You paused staring "but what if...". "Please" Mako said "let's handle this together” taking your hand. You nodded smiling "I love you too by the way". Mako grinned and Jazak groaned "guess it’s the hard way. Hope her love was worth it, because you're dead" and he sent a fire stream right at Mako. However all of Mako’s experience as pro-bender and the years spent watching his back on the streets gave him incredible reflexes so he sidestepped the attack with ease and turned to Jazak. “You’re going to regret ever ruining our holiday” and he jumped into the middle of the group. Mako worked on injuring as many of them as possible providing a distraction. He sent out large blasts of fire to cause as much chaos as possible. In contrast you used precise shots to incapacitate two of the hitmen before they even realise what was happening. “It’s a distraction! Get the girl” Jazak yelled, not as dumb as he looked, and two of the men turned to you. The other two, including Jazak focused on Mako. Mako locked eyes with you and you could see the worry in them but you nodded to him. You could handle this, you were the princess of the freaking Fire Nation and heir to the throne. You could handle this group in your sleep.
You attacked first surprising everyone and managed to floor one of the men before he even realised what had happened. After that everyone sprang into action and things got messy. A lot of Mako’s furniture was smashed and more than one of the attacks hit the wrong person but after a few minutes everyone was on the floor except you and Mako. Mako quickly grabbed your hand and pulled you towards the door. He hurried you down the stairwell and out of the building aware there were likely more around. Sure enough he found two in the reception and took them out with some lightning bending. You were dazed, the adrenaline running out and so just stepped over the men trusting Mako’s instincts. You finally made it outside and Mako was telling you how he’d get you to Air Temple Island where you’d be safe when he spotted someone on the floor. "Chief" he called and rushed forwards. You saw it was Lin Beifong and helped Mako turn her over. She groaned and you saw Mako’s face fill with relief. "Eugh....Princess? Well done kid now get her out of here!". Mako nodded "I'm on it!". "Head to Air Temple Island! With Tenzin and the Avatar she’ll be safe". Mako nodded "way ahead of you, let's go". He moved to pick her up but Lin frowned "no! Your mission is the princess, I'll show you down". "We’re not leaving you here" you said and Mako nodded "princess’s orders!". Mako carried Lin as you searched for her car. You finally spotted Lin’s car just around the corner and Mako laid Lin on the back seat. You went to get in next her to her but she grunted "front seat is more protected, get in there". You didn't argue and got in beside Mako. He sped you to the docks and then used his officer title and Lin’s reputation to get a boat. You were halfway to Air Temple island when you heard motors. "I told you to leave me!" Lin barked and Mako gripped the boat steering wheel harder "we can make it!".
The boat picked up speed but you could see lights appearing behind you. The men had smaller boats that could travel faster and were gaining on you. “Y/n take the wheel I’ll shoot at them” Mako called. Lin groaned “you can’t let the princess get involved, what if she gets hurt”. “I can handle it” you told her and slid into the driver seat. Apparently Mako’s shots gave the group ideas and they soon returned the fire, literally. Lin was the lookout and yelled “duck” whenever one came too closer however the boat itself wasn’t so lucky. The right side was hit and went up in flames before the water could put it out. “Shit!” Beifong cried rushing to the side and she and Mako tried to put it out but they weren’t water benders. “We’re going to have to abandon ship” Lin called and Mako nodded “but not before taking these jerks out first”. The three of you stood back to back and fired at the speedboats. One by one your marks hit and just in time. The smoke began getting too strong and Lin broke out in a coughing fit. “That’s our queue!” Mako cried “everyone off the boat” and you all leapt overboard. You gasped as you fell into the cold water. The current was stronger than expected but you managed to stay afloat. "Y/n" Mako yelled from somewhere nearby and you nodded "I'm fine! Where’s Lin?". “I’m right here” the officer replied and you saw Mako was holding her up much to the seasoned officer’s disdain but she didn’t verbally complain. “We have to get away from the ship before it blows” Mako called and you frowned unsure how Mako could swim and hold Lin when the lights in air temple island flared on. "Mako" a voice yelled from right behind you and you both turned to see the Avatar had swum out to rescue you. “Korra” Mako smiled “thank god”. Korra grinned despite the situation “did someone want an Avatar?”.

Next part is the last one!
This was meant to be the last one but it was far too long so I had to split it into two.

ATTEMPT ZERO
After years of being the Fire Lord, Zuko had come to realize the job was pretty basic if you thought about it long enough. There were just a few major things to deal with. First, there’s the internal relations, like the civil wars and uprising he deal with at the start of his reign because people disliked his ways. Then there’s the external relations, Zuko worked alongside Aang to repair those, helping the Southern Water Tribe rebuild itself from the ground up, and hosting meetings between the nations, friendly and work related. Those are the more diplomatic aspects of the job, and sadly, even as a ruler who sought to end a war, there was still violence in the world.
When Aang and the rest of Team Avatar ended the One Hundred Year War, that only exposed a variety of other problems within the world, problems that the team seeked to end. There were people out there who disliked this line of thinking, and similarly wanted it to end, but ending the lives of Team Avatar.
Zuko was used to the death threats, and the assassination attempts. He’d had a security detail in place to ensure he lived to rule his nation, this was especially necessary since he lacked an heir and the only other people eligible for the throne were an old man who ran a tea shop and a psychopathic teenage girl in a mental institution. This is where the social aspect of the job came in, the part that Zuko had never been good at. The Galas and the girls who threw themselves at him, the nobility of all nations that approached him offering their children’s hand in marriage. Zuko was an enigma, a young and powerful bachelor, and now all the nobles with children were lining up for a minute alone with him to try and sell their own kids.
It disgusted him. The way they treated their children like cattle reminded Zuko of his own father, how willing he was to get rid of Zuko since he had a replacement on standby. Though, Zuko sincerely doubted he ever would’ve gotten the throne if Ozai had a choice, even if he hadn’t been banished.
Alas, even Zuko could recognize the urgency of it, the death threats weren’t letting up, and the assassination attempts were only getting more and more elaborate, leaving Zuko wondering when they’d no longer be attempts. He needed and heir, or at least a wife who could rule alongside him and take over entirely in the event of his death.
The problem was, he didn’t want this.
He was in a unique position, where the person he married would have an immense effect on society, on politics. If it was an Earth Kingdom girl, then maybe the years of violence against their people could be mended sooner, and they could begin working together to combat a variety of issues. If he ends up with a Fire Nation girl, it could be viewed as strengthening the traditional ideals of Fire Nation independence and sovereignty because the Fire Nation is “supreme.”
Dating was political now and he hated it. It wasn’t like Zuko wanted to be alone, it’s just that now everything mattered far more than it used to. Of course, even as a prince it had been the same, but now that he was the Fire Lord, things seemed to be ten times worse. Perhaps it was excessive but Zuko couldn’t help but feel paranoid whenever a new person entered his life, he couldn’t help but assume that they were just using him for some other agenda.
Of course, his friends had tried to assure him this wasn’t always the case, and they’d even made attempts to set him up with girls. All of which had failed. Zuko knew he wasn’t an easy person, much less an easy person to date. As Fire Lord, a lot of his time was taken up by meetings, and diplomatic missions, and not-so-diplomatic missions alongside Team Avatar. That and he was rather awkward when it came down to most social interactions, though he’d improved over time, especially as the ruler of a nation, his speeches were elegant and so was the way he negotiated with other kingdoms.
And yet he struggled to talk to strangers.
Iroh seemed to be tired of this as well, he’d sent Zuko several letters in regards to his lack of romance, insisting that he was a “handsome young man” that had “lots of potential” and he was “wasting” his prime with so much work. Zuko didn’t consider managing a country as a waste, though he understood where Iroh was coming from, Zuko probably should’ve been spending time with friends, going to clubs. Not saving the world.
Regardless, there wasn’t much he could do about, he didn’t have time for dating, and Zuko wasn’t willing to compromise his morals and beliefs just for an heir in the event that he got brutally murdered. He refused to raise a child just for that purpose. He learnt the hard way that you should only have kids if you intend to cherish them. And the idea of marrying someone just to strengthen his nation felt wrong, though he could see the benefits.
God, he hated being Fire Lord sometimes.
On the other hand, Y/N L/N liked her job. Amongst the nobility of the Earth Kingdom, she was a rather famous woman, Y/N had brought together some of the most powerful couples in the country. A lot of people owed her favors, and the money that came with the job was more than satisfactory. If Y/N had to guess, she was one of the richest people in the kingdom, considering how much people were willing to pay to fine “the one.” Her business had been rather successful since she’d gotten renowned in the inner ring of the city, and now, Y/N was considering expansion, to the Fire Nation. The borders had long since reopened, when the new Fire Lord came into power.
A whole new set of nobles for her to profit from.
She’d decided to head to a high end tea shop in celebration of her choice to expand her business. Y/N had heard it was only for the best, since the tea shop served the best. One of her clients had insisted that someone of her esteem try the tea there, given that she was the best in her own profession.
So, here she was. It was a nice place, she wouldn’t deny, and Y/N had heard of the shop before. The Jasmine Dragon, run by some old guy who’d appeared in Ba Sing Se just before the war ended with some major talent when it came to brewing tea. The interior was fancy, but not excessive, several people were already seated within. Y/N even recognized one of the couples there, who waved at her enthusiastically, “hello! Lady L/N, how lovely to see you!” One of them called out.
Y/N smiled at them, “how are you two?”
The other beamed at her as she responded, “oh we’re just lovely! Preparing our wedding invitations and one of them has your name on it.” This wasn’t abnormal, most of the couples she’d brought together attributed their love to her. In actuality, Y/N found that if you found two people with compatible personalities, then they’d work things out on their own. All she did was introduce them.
“I’m excited!” Y/N assured, moving past their table, “now if you’ll excuse me, I’d like to try this famous tea. But, I’m looking forward to the invite.”
The pair nodded, before returning their attention the friends seated across from them, and Y/N made her way to the front of the shop, bag of coins in hand. An older man stood behind the counter, a smile on his face as he brought his attention to her, “what can I get you today Miss...”
“Y/N. Y/N L/N.” She replied, small smile on her face as she looked at the menu, “what’s your name?” Y/N asked, meeting his eyes to see the flicker of recognition within them before returning her gaze to the menu.
He nods slowly, “I’m Iroh, and you’re a matchmaker, no?” He’d recognized the name, her business had begun gaining traction amongst the nobility of the Earth Kingdom shortly after the war, and she was one of the most sought after matchmakers in the nation. Iroh himself had looked into her business, seeing as his nephew was yet to find love in his chaotic lifetstyle.
Y/N smiled at him as she nodded, “indeed.” She placed the menu down, “any suggestions?”
“Perhaps, Jasmine tea?” He suggested.
Y/N nodded, “sounds good.” She places extends a hand with coins, dropping them into his palm, “so are you looking for love?” Though she was certainly famous for her skills, Y/N tended to work behind the scenes, and she was surprised to find this man recognized her.
A small laughed escaped him at her words as he shook his head, “no. I believe it is a little too late for that.” He was working on her tea beyond the counter, and Y/N began to wonder how he was steaming the tea pot when she noticed there was no stove beside him.
“Don’t say that! You seem like a fine man that anyone woman would want.” Y/N assured, though she now wondered why exactly this man knew who she was in the first place. It was rare for those outside of nobility to know who she was.
Turning around, his hand pressed to the pot that Y/N was positive had to have been burning his hand in some way, “oh, you’re too kind.” He replies, a small smile on his face as he poured a bit into a cup, “I was looking to help my nephew find love actually.”
“Really, now?” Firebending, that was the only explanation for the way this man was handling the tea. “I was looking to expand my business to the Fire Nation, perhaps I could help him out.” He didn’t hold himself the way most Earth Kingdom citizens did, and coupled with the possible Firebending, he was likely from the Fire Nation.
Iroh raises a brow at this, “what gave me away?” He stirs the tea a few times, before placing it on the counter for her to take.
Y/N shrugs, “it’s my job to know people well enough that I can find them a match.” Taking a sip of her tea, she smiles, “so this nephew of yours. He wouldn’t happen to nobility, would he?”
He laughs at this, pouring himself a cup of tea as well as he sighs, “actually, he is nobility. In a way.”
Now Y/N did not expect the nobility Iroh spoke of the be the nobility. As in the Fire Lord, the actual ruler of the entire nation, though this would certainly be great for business. Once the world hears of how Y/N found the Fire Lord, someone who had been notably difficult to woo apparently, a match, her business will be set.
“Isn’t this exciting, guys?” Y/N exclaimed, looking to her assistants, they were both on the younger side, Marcella and Evelyn. She’d brought them along since this would definitely be a valuable learning experience, and Y/N figured she’d need a lot of help if the Fire Lord was as difficult as they made him out to be. That and Y/N didn’t want to leave them alone in the Earth Kingdom, both of them had been orphaned at a young age. Y/N couldn’t help but relate to them, so when she’d come upon her newfound wealth, brought about by her job as a matchmaker, she’d taken the pair under her wing.
With a bag thrown over her shoulder, Evelyn simply nodded while Marcella exclaimed, “yes! I’ve always wanted to see the Fire Nation. Do you think we could find a client in one of the Water Tribes next?”
Y/N couldn’t help but smile at the young girl’s excitement, “if this goes well? We’ll be able to find clients anywhere.” She wasn’t wrong, Y/N had never had the opportunity to work with the actual Earth King, the true ruler of the nation. Now she was working with the ruler of a nation she’d never stepped foot in, entirely new customs and traditions to research, a new social structure, new everything.
What a fun challenge.
With a smile on her face, Y/N followed closely behind Iroh, the palace was stunning, she couldn’t deny it. And compared to the crumbling infrastructure of the lower rings of cities like Ba Sing Se, Fire Nation cities were prospering Fire Lord Zuko’s rule. From what she’d heard, things weren’t always this way.
“Y/N and I are going to wait here,” he gestured to the open space before them, dozens of paintings within it, “these two will take you to your rooms.” He explained to the pair of young girls, nodding to the servants beside them, who began to guide the young girls away.
Y/N’s eyes found their way to the paintings, the newest one being of the current Fire Lord, Zuko himself. She wondered how accurate the painting was, and seeing as she would be meeting him soon, Y/N figured she’d find out as she sighed, turning to Iroh, “so how does the original heir to the throne become the owner of an infamous tea shop?”
Iroh smiles to himself at her words, “age brings wisdom. And tea is a nice substitute for alcohol.” He jokes, though Y/N can see the pain in his eyes, along with admiration as he stares at Zuko’s portrait alongside her.
“Uncle!” A voice exclaimed, joy clear in his voice as he called out. Y/N watched as Iroh spun around, a broad smile on his face as he moved forwards to embrace the person.
He looked better in person, Y/N quickly decided, though the portrait did its job just as well. She wouldn’t deny he was attractive, but she already knew looks weren’t the issue. Iroh had informed her of the situation, Zuko’s constant rejection of any and every single person that approached him, and the stress he experienced because of the politics of it all.
“Nephew, it is good to see you,” Iroh said, releasing him from the hug, “how are you?” Initially he seemed fairly comfortable at the sight of just his Uncle, but as the Fire Lord’s body seemed to stiffen, Y/N realized she’d been spotted.
So, he wasn’t comfortable with strangers, “I’m alright Uncle... who is this?” He asked. There was an edge to his voice as he spoke, sizing Y/N up, not in the way you did for someone you were attracted to, but for an enemy.
Uncomfortable with new people, clear trust issues, and his mind was always alert. She’d have to write these things down and take them into consideration prior to finding him a potential partner. Though it was starting to look like he was completely unaware of her purpose there as she extended her hand out to him, “Y/N L/N. Professional matchmaker.” She explained with a bright smile, though, based off his personality, that would likely ward him off more.
He was polite though, shaking her hand despite his clear suspicions of her, “Zuko.” Y/N couldn’t help but raise a brow at this, he hadn’t mentioned his title in his introduction. Zuko turned to his Uncle, brows furrowing as he said, “you hired a professional matchmaker?”
With a shrug Iroh responded, “we met by chance! So, it must be destiny.”
Zuko gives him a tight lipped smile, nodding slowly before returning his attention to Y/N who stood away from the pair, examining the decor of the palace. It was minimalistic, truly basic if she was honest, despite the clear amount of riches they possessed, it lacked evidence of them. Bringing her eyes back to him, he spoke, “you don’t need to be here. You can receive your pay, but I personally see no purpose for a matchmaker.”
Iroh frowned at his words, “Zuko, you need to give it a chance! Unlike all those ladies who keep throwing themselves at you. Besides, she seems rather good at her job.” His gaze was on his nephew as he sighed, giving Y/N an apologetic look that she simply waved off.
“Oh, it’s fine. It just won’t be for long.” Zuko raised a brow at her words, and Y/N watched his feet shifted, “no need to prepare for a fight, your majesty.” She hummed, rolling her neck, in the corner of her eye she could see shock flash in his own. “You see, as a matchmaker I do several things, including developing a little... profile of my clients. Now we just met but I can already tell you a variety of things about you that’s making your love life rather trivial.” Even before she had to develop the profiles professionally, in the lower rings of Ba Sing Se, being capable of reading others was a necessary skill.
Zuko’s eyes narrowed at her, “and what have you determined, in the very short time we’ve known each other.”
A small laugh escaped her as she extended her arms and cracked her knuckles, “well. You have major trust issues, which is why you are desperately trying to keep me at arms length. That’s one reason why you have yet to find someone.” Turning her attention to the decor of the large room, Y/N closed her eyes and inhaled deeply. “Given the lack of interior design, I would say you’re struggling with social aspects of your job, and you need a partner. One that I can help you find.”
“See! I told you she’s good at what she does.” Iroh exclaimed, moving forward to clap a hand onto Y/N’s shoulder, much to Zuko’s dismay.
Y/N gave the older man a small smile before looking back to Zuko, who eyed her wearily, “you keep avoiding the portrait of your father. But you can’t bring yourself to take it down.” She said, and Y/N could practically feel the tension building with each word. “He’s one of the reasons you’ve yet to find a lover-”
“Because he gave me the scar?”
Y/N paused, brows furrowing at his words, her eyes found his, “I’m sorry, was that a joke?” She asked, and Iroh stared between the two, amused. “You’re actually rather attractive, which is why I know this is a personality thing. Probably tired of the whole fancy court thing they have going on here, which I’m going to need to research...” Y/N pursed her lips, failing to notice the clear shock on Zuko’s face at her comment, and red flushing his cheeks. Waving off her thoughts, she looked back to him, “anyways. My assistants should’ve already cleared out about an hour in your schedule each day for our sessions. I’m going to be asking you some very personal questions. So, be ready!”
And with that, Y/N waved to the two, bowing rather questionably shortly after, before heading off in the direction she’d seen Marcella and Evelyn go in. Effectively leaving behind a baffled Zuko, and a rather satisfied Iroh, who began to laugh at Zuko’s reaction. “I really like her, quite the character she has.”
“Yeah, quite the character.” He brought a hand to his temple, “is this really necessary, Uncle?”
Iroh simply sighed, looking to his nephew, “whether you want to admit it or not, she was right. Ruling a nation is difficult, and ruling it alone is even harder.” A small huff of laughter escaped Iroh, “and she figured that out by your lack of interior design!”
Exhaling deeply, Zuko reminded himself that this was all part of the job, the job that consumed his entire life. The life that this girl had analyzed in a matter of moments.
Yeah, he wasn’t looking forward to their meetings.
Though his morals and his disagreement with practically selling your own child were a major factor in his lack of a love life. There was also the simple fact that there was no love in many of the interactions he had with potential suitors, much less genuine interest. They all wanted the power he could give them should they get married.
There was also the fact that Zuko had very little relationship experience, a fact he was trying to ignore. At the end of the day, he couldn’t bring himself to approach anyone, and if he did, he wouldn’t know what to do. Zuko also doubted that people would act... genuine around him, especially if they knew who he was. And all he really wanted was something real, considering his entire day was surrounded by fake smiles that belonged to both him and others.
It seemed that Y/N wasn’t prepared to ignore this piece of information though, since the following morning she’d seated him down and begun to speak of it, “so. You’ve been in two relationships.”
His brows furrowed, “one actually.” He and Mai had broken up about six months into his work as Fire Lord, “Mai.”
Raising a brow at him, she leaned back in the seat. Zuko couldn’t help but wonder how she managed to decorate the place in such a short period of time, as he could’ve sworn there hadn’t been a desk here the previous day. Then again, he couldn’t remember the last time he’d toured his own palace. “Well, I’ve heard rumors of you and a Southern Water Tribe member, but I’m not sure which one so I just-”
“Okay! That’s enough.” His cheeks were flushed red as he looked away.
Y/N grinned at him, leaning forwards, “then let’s discuss Mai. You two were pretty on and off, right?”
Zuko grimaced at the thought, they were. He wouldn’t deny that he’d gone back to her a few times during his time as Fire Lord, “yeah.”
Y/N began to write into her notebook, “tell me about her.”
“I don’t see why that’s important.” Came his response, looking at her quizzically as he frowned.
Tilting her head at him, Y/N gave Zuko a look, “come on. Let me do my job, I need to know about her to gauge what types of personalities you like while also determining why the two of you broke it off entirely.” She placed the book down, and Zuko could very clearly see the words ‘commitment issues’ underlined. “The goal isn’t just to find you a suitable wife that can help you rule, but someone you can be happy with.”
He’s silent for a moment, eyes on Y/N, her words seem honest. And this was her job, “she was blunt. Honest. Kind of mean at times, but she could be sweet as well. Pretty stoic, expressing her emotions was always... difficult for her.”
Y/N nodded slowly, scribbling a few more things down, “okay. And what’s your favorite color?”
“What type of question is that?” Zuko asked, brows furrowing in confusion.
Crossing her arms, Y/N shrugged, “well. Favorite colors can tell you a lot about a person.” Came her response, “mine is green. Maybe that’s because I associate green with the Earth Kingdom, where I lived. Or maybe it’s because I happen to like nature quite a bit.” Looking around, Zuko could see that she’d already gotten a variety of plants native to the Fire Nation, most were succulents due to the almost year round heat.
At the mention of colors, his mind immediately went back to his first experience with the dragons, when their fire encircled him and Aang. “I.. don’t know how to describe the color- colors?” Zuko’s brows drew together in thought, and Y/N looked at him.
“How would I not understand a color?” The confusion is clear in her voice as she looks at him. Y/N can practically see the nostalgia in his eyes as he looks to the balcony.
Sighing, Zuko shifted in his seat, “these dragons I met ended up making a circle of fire around me and there were just... so many colors. But together it was just,” he paused, searching for the right word, “beautiful.”
Y/N’s mouth gaped open for a moment, “you met dragons?” She exclaimed, nearly throwing her notebook aside. Y/N had never seen such creatures, in fact, the general consensus was that they were still extinct
Zuko seemed to forget about this fact as he straightened himself, eyes meeting hers, “you can’t tell anyone about them!” He exclaimed, “they were hunted to extinction, though I intend to outlaw such things it’s just...”
She nodded in understanding, “people break laws.” Y/N leaned back into her seat once more, “you owe me a dragon story.” She said, before crossing her legs in her seat and continuing, “favorite food?”
“Well, Aang took me to Avatar Day, and they had these weird Avatar shaped dough things.” He explained, recalling the time he’d gone with Aang and the others. Apparently they used to burn his statue, but now they worship him for some reason.
Y/N brought a hand under her chin, “I have no idea what that is.” She began to scribble something down on her notepad, “but okay.”
“What about you?”
Y/N hummed in response, “what do you mean?”
Zuko felt his cheeks warm, “this just feels like an interview.”
“Probably because it is an interview.” Y/N said, gesturing for him to elaborate.
Looking away, Zuko frowned, “it’s weird.” Sighing, he spoke once more, “so, what’s your favorite food?”
Y/N was silent for a moment, staring at Zuko, who was trying his hardest to avoid her gaze. This was a rare occurrence, seeing as most nobles were rather self-centered and liked talking about themselves. She’d never had a client who felt uncomfortable with this portion because it was basically a one-sided conversation. “Jennamite is a good rock candy.”
Zuko turns back to her, a small laugh escaping him, “my friends were nearly killed in Jennamite by the King of Omashu once.”
“I’m sorry, what?”

ATTEMPT ONE
Y/N wouldn’t deny how odd it was, to be sharing as much information as she was learning about Zuko. She’d never really considered just how personal some of the questions were until she found herself answering them. But, after about a month, she had assembled a pretty good array of potential suitors for Zuko. Along with a few of her own clients, Y/N had found some girls that from the Fire Nation that seemed pretty acceptable.
That’s what she had thought at least.
“What do you mean, you already rejected her?”
Turns out, Zuko had met half the women, and rejected them. The other half were either from the Earth Kingdom, or yet to attend one of few Galas that Zuko hosted. Seeing as he handed off most of that work to his advisors, it was rare for him to remain at Galas for an extended period of time.
He grimaced at Y/N’s words nonetheless, his Uncle had informed her of his situation, but clearly not the extent of it. “She was more interested in her guard than me. It was a power grab her parents likely forced her into.” He remembered the girl, she’d been kind to him, but she clearly didn’t want him as much as her parents did.
His words brought about a new level of understanding for Y/N, who nodded slowly, of course it was the parents that Zuko had a problem with. It wasn’t uncommon for nobles to practically throw their children at potential suitors as though they’re a bag of coins. It was something that disgusted her as well, her job found people companions that they liked while these people simply wished for an addition to their power.
Zuko was the ultimate power grab. Y/N could only imagine how many times this had happened to him, random people he’d never met approaching him, offering their child’s hand in marriage.
Bringing a hand to her temple, Y/N sighed, “but the rest are fine?”
He nodded slowly, flipping through the pages he had yet to remove, Zuko skimmed what Y/N had written. Taking note of her handwriting, he wondered if she’d written his profile like this. “Yeah...” Y/N narrowed her eyes at him, and Zuko sighed, removing a few more pages from the binder she’d presented him with.
Exhaling deeply, Y/N brought a hand to Zuko’s shoulder, “be honest with me. I’m not gonna yell at you for removing them Zuko, this is for you.”
Sometimes he forgot it was her job to be nice to him.
“Right.” He mumbled, trying to shake off the feeling he got as she removed her hand. “That’s still... a lot of people. Some of which aren’t even in this nation.” Zuko pointed out, a queasy feeling within him as he looked at her.
Y/N plopped down onto the couch in the common room they’d met in, sprawling her body across it, “you’re right, there is a lot. But,” She twisted her body so that she could see him, wiggling her brows suggestively, “it’s been a while since you hosted a Gala.”
Zuko’s face dropped at her words, in his years of being Fire Lord, he’d had about three total, and hated every single one. But given how rare the Galas were, people got pretty excited when he threw them. “I hate planning those, it’s a waste of time and-”
A small smile was on her face as she interrupted him, “and you suck at planning them? I can tell by the decor of your palace.” Glaring at her, Zuko watched as she shifted so that her head hung off the couch upside down, “well. This will be the best Gala yet, you’ll impress all the ladies that you can’t meet in the immediate future in about...” Y/N looked to the watch on her wrist, brows furrowing, “eight months. And I’ll help you plan it, since you desperately need help-”
“Alright, I get it, I’m horrible.” He grumbled, crossing his arms as he leaned back against his seat across from her after placing the binder on the coffee table between them. “Eight months isn’t a lot of time,” traditionally, Gala’s took at least a year’s worth of planning and preparation, especially since Zuko was so busy he barely had the time to assist in the process. Eight months was no where near enough.
Y/N was still frowning at his words, “no self-deprecation.” She ordered, taking Zuko by surprise, before continuing, “regardless. I’ve planned Gala in less time with less resources. It’ll be fine.” Pursing her lips Y/N sighed, “now we need to discuss your inability to talk to people in general due to your immense trust issues and constant battle field mentality.”
Zuko’s mouth gaped open at her words, “excuse me?”
Bringing her hands to rest on her stomach as she laid upside down, Y/N spoke, “when we first met you looked like you contemplated attacking me. And when you met Marcella and Evelyn, I’ve never seen someone so awkward.” Zuko is silent and looks away, only proving her point as Y/N continued, “so we need to practice your people skills, and flirting for future reference, seeing as your first date is in about a week-”
Almost immediately, Zuko straightened his posture, sitting up and looking to her as though she’d thrown a bucket of ice cold water onto him. “A week?” He winced at the way his voice cracked.
“Yeah, I spoke with one of the girls, not her parents, and asked her to meet with you later in the week.” Y/N explained, “her name is Elara, she’s in there.”
Frowning, Zuko reached for the binder and began to flip through the pages, “how’d you know I wasn’t going to get rid of her page?” Only to find the girl’s page, details on her personality, skills, hobbies and more on them.
A smirk spread across Y/N’s face, “she was one of few I was sure you’d keep.” With a sigh, Zuko looked back to Y/N, who still sat upside down, “now. You need to practice your romance skills, so come on.” She twisted her body, her legs falling to the side of the couch, and then moving onto the floor, Y/N stood. As the blood rushed to her head, a wave of dizziness came over her, and Y/N found herself stumbling slightly.
A hand came to her back and forearm, steadying her, “you need to practice walking.” Zuko laughed slightly, a nervous edge in his voice as he eyed her.
Y/N brought a hand to her head as she laughed as well, “oh my...” Y/N blinked several times as the wave of dizziness passed, her hand gripping Zuko’s arm as she grounded herself. Looking up to him, she quickly realized how close they were and cleared her throat, releasing his arm.
He followed suit, removing his hands from her, “sorry-”
“You didn’t do anything wrong, Zuko.”
The look her gives her almost hurts. Because Y/N can see the shock within his eyes as he nods slowly in response. She wonders what he’s thinking of as he she gives him a tight lipped smile, clapping her hands together as she turns back to him, “practice.” She repeated, mostly for herself.
And maybe offering to be the person he practiced on was her first mistake.

ATTEMPT FIVE
Y/N had learnt a lot about Zuko in the past four dates he’d been on. One of these things being the fact that Zuko was a wild card when it came to dates, and they seemed to either go very well with the girls contacting Y/N to let her know they wished for a second date, only for Zuko to reject the possibility. Or, they went very bad. And Zuko returned with some sort of drink splattered onto his clothing.
So, Y/N decided that the best course of action was to discover what exactly Zuko wasn’t mentioning, and to follow him with a disguise. Evelyn had suggested it, Iroh supported the idea full-heartedly, though Marcella had believed it would be a huge invasion of privacy, Y/N didn’t really care, seeing as it was her job to be involved in Zuko’s love life. She was getting paid to ensure he found love.
And she was curious.
That’s how Y/N ended up dressed in some very suspicious Fire Nation clothing alongside her assistants and the apparent Dragon of the West, famous tea shop owner, and member of the royal family.
What a wonderful assortment of people.
Marcella and Evelyn had separated from Iroh and Y/N, sitting in another booth across from them, it was a feeble attempt to keep them from sticking out. The girl had chosen a rather upscale restaurant, so dressing appropriately while also maintaining a look that prevented Zuko from recognizing them.
Y/N pulled her hat further down on her face as she looked to Iroh, who was browsing the menu. She wouldn’t be shocked if he entered the kitchen just to make himself a ‘decent’ cup of tea. He’d been rather helpful during the whole process, anything she didn’t find out from Zuko, Y/N had learnt from Iroh. “See anything you like, Iroh?”
He smiled at her, nodding slowly, “I think I’ll just take some tea.”
Looking to Marcella and Evelyn, Y/N smiles, the two are speaking with one another like they aren’t supposed to be spying on the Fire Lord. But Y/N doesn’t mind, this was more of a recreational activity anyways, and she was glad they were having fun. Since they’d gotten to the Fire Nation two months ago there had been an... adjustment period to put it simply.
Y/N nodded at Iroh’s statement, and her eyes fell back onto Zuko and his newest date, Amaya, she was a simple girl. She’d possessed organizational skills that Zuko lacked, planned dozens of events, had the expressive qualities that Zuko yearned for in a partner. Amaya was one of few that Y/N was sure Zuko would take a liking to. Especially since she also had training in a variety of fighting styles, and was quite the Firebender. She’d been a little skeptical when she first contacted Amaya, the girl seemed hesitant, but she agreed.
And from the looks of it, he had. The pair was laughing along with each other, but Y/N could see the way Zuko stiffened at any physical contact, in general he’d yet to relax. If Y/N was honest, it was basically like any first date, awkward.
Zuko didn’t really know how to feel about Amaya, she was what he should be looking for in a girl, everything he needed if he was honest. She had an interest in the art, something Zuko had never taken to and the main reason his palace looked, ‘dull’ as Y/N had put it. And she was expressive, the main issue he’d had with Mai was her lack of expression. But, for some reason, Zuko just couldn’t see her as anything more than a good friend. There was something... off about her.
“When that Earth Kingdom girl approached me, I was skeptical.” Amaya explained, taking a sip from her glass, “you know how most Earth Kingdom folk are...” She gave him a look as Zuko listened in confusion. “The Fire Nation citizens simply have more class.” Amaya settled for with a shrug.
Oh.
Zuko laughed nervously, “I’m not sure I understand. I find Earth Kingdom citizens pretty pleasant actually, and Y/N, the one you met, she’s actually very resourceful and kind.” His mind went to Toph as well, who had invented an entirely new type of bending. She was an impressive young woman from the Earth Kingdom, and Y/N was as well, she’d started her own business at a young age and turned it into something incredible.
“Really? She didn’t seem too smart when I met her, but who can say no to a meeting with the Fire Lord?”
Zuko was pretty sure her words were meant to be taken as a joke. But Amaya wasn’t the first person Zuko had encountered with this mindset, she was just more subtle about it. The supremacy of the Fire Nation was still an idea that ran rampant in some people’s minds, though Zuko had dealt with most disputes regarding his peaceful relations with other nations. Many still missed the time when the Fire Nation practically owned the world, where Fire Nation citizens could treat the people who had their homes taken from them however they pleased.
It was a dark time in his nation’s history, nonetheless, several people missed it. This was something rather prevalent amongst Nobles though, they were the ones who lost an immense amount of land when the war had ended. Many of them were bitter about what had happened.
If Zuko was honest, she’d probably had these ideas drilled into her since birth, and simply hadn’t grown out of them, which was a shame. But as the ruler of a nation, he couldn’t rule beside someone who looked down on others simply because they weren’t from the Fire Nation.
Zuko shook his head, “Y/N built her business from the ground up. And now she’s helping the Fire Lord get dates.” He knows he sounds defensive, as though he’s prepared to fight her, something his Uncle would likely scold him for, but he doesn’t care at the moment.
“All she does is set you up with people.”
Zuko’s brows furrowed at this comment, and he raised a hand to get the attention of the waiter, “excuse me, could I get the check please?” The young man nodded, heading off to get the check, and Amaya looked at him incredulously.
Y/N had done far more than set him up with people, she’d helped him begin planning a Gala, she’d tried her best to find a good assortment of people that would fit both Zuko’s needs and the Fire Nation’s, and that list was probably very difficult to narrow down. Zuko had seen the work she put in for formulating profiles of the potential suitors, and throughout all of it she had done nothing but support him.
“What are you doing?” Amaya asked, shifting in her seat as she stared at Zuko quizzically.
The waiter came over and handed Zuko the check, and Zuko placed a pouch of money on the table, “thanks. Keep the change.” He explained, nodding to the boy, who’s mouth gaped open in surprise as he took the pouch of money, bowing to Zuko repetitively, though Zuko wasn’t paying much attention to him as he spoke to Amaya. “I don’t think this is going to work out, I’m sorry.”
Amaya is still seated in shock as Zuko rises from his table, and Y/N can’t help it when her mouth gapes open at the sight of him simply abandoning his date. She makes eye contact with Iroh, who raises a brow, and they both sit up. She moves to follow Zuko, only to bump into someone.
“I’m so sorry!” Y/N exclaims, moving down to help them pick up their hat, that had fallen when they collided.
“No, that was my fault entirely!” He responds, shaking his head as they both leaned town to pick it up.
“Aang, come on! He’s leaving.” The woman behind him exclaims.
Y/N’s brows furrow in recognition as she looks up to see a blue arrow tattooed on the man’s head, and her eyes widen in realization. Zuko had described Aang several times during their conversations, he and the rest of his friends came up often. But Y/N did not expect the first time she met the Avatar and his friends to be when they were both following Zuko on his date.

ATTEMPT FOURTEEN
Y/N simply sighs as she opens her door to see Zuko, in the outfit she’d helped him pick out. “What was it this time?” He’d been on thirteen dates thus far, and Y/N was slowly realizing that Zuko was likely one of her most difficult clients. This was purely because he’d yet to get a second date, though there had been offers, Zuko had declined all of them.
“She was just-” His hands gestured rather broadly, he was practically throwing them into the air, “she was so rude to the waiter.” This had always been a dealbreaker for him, since he’d worked as a waiter in two different tea shops, Zuko had come to understand the importance of treating a waiter with kindness and how difficult the work could be.
His eyes dart between Y/N and her door, she’s rubbing her eyes due to the exhaustion and Zuko can’t help the guilt that floods him. Nonetheless, she opens the door wider, heading inside her room and signaling for him to close it as she falls back onto her bed. “You were a waiter once, yeah?” He’d told her a fair share about his life in the Earth Kingdom, she’d inquired quite a bit about that part of his life.
He asked about her life in the Earth Kingdom too, and she’d told him how poor life could be the in the outer rings, something he’d experienced for himself. Zuko listened as she describe living after her parents had died, working for a matchmaker only to discover she was actually good at the job, making a name for herself in the outer rings and then making her way inwards until she was one of the most sought after matchmakers in the kingdom. Y/N spoke of how she’d met Marcella and Evelyn, and how she’d taken them in when she’d discovered they were both orphans, living on the streets as pickpockets.
Zuko wouldn’t help but laugh at this, he could imagine Evelyn as a pickpocket, but Marcella? She was a sweet girl, he couldn’t imagine her in a life of crime. Of course, desperation made people do questionable things. Zuko knew that much from experience.
“Yeah, I was.” Came his response, taking a seat in the chair by her desk.
Y/N sat up in her bed, bracing herself with her elbows as she raised a brow at him, “what are you doing?”
Zuko frowned, shifting in the chair, “sitting...?” He moved to get up but Y/N waved him off.
“Just lay with me, idiot.” She allowed her head to fall back onto the bed, patting the spot beside her. Clearly, her suggestion wasn’t bothering her, but Zuko felt his face flush at the possibility.
If he’s honest, he’s not even trying anymore when it comes to dates and women and love. There were three reasons for this, one of which was the fact that he simply wasn’t connecting with any of the women he had met thus far. Sure they were nice, and they probably would be his type has it not been for reason two. The fact that Zuko had realized he had feelings for Y/N, what feelings? He wasn’t sure, but they sure as hell weren’t platonic, if they were he would not be blushing this much. He wouldn’t get that weird feeling in his stomach whenever he spoke to her.
Then there was was reason three, if Zuko succeeded in finding love, then Y/N would leave. It was selfish, but he already knew he wouldn’t find anyone considering he pretty sure he loved someone else already. So now, Zuko was basically procrastinating letting Y/N know that this just wasn’t going to work out, mostly because he didn’t have a plan.
He was debating just firing her, but that likely wouldn’t go over well, and he wanted to see her business succeed. If you get fired by the Fire Lord, that just looks bad. Now Zuko wondered what the best way to go about this was, since there was no point in working for him, even if she was getting paid. He was a waste of time.
He couldn’t help the smile graced his lips as his own thoughts reminded him of the time she’d scolded him, telling him to quit being self-deprecating.
Zuko sat up from the chair, making his way over to her bed, Zuko found himself simply plopping down onto it face first, earning a laugh from Y/N.
He rolled over onto his back, turning to look at Y/N, only to find her eyes were already on him, bringing a blush to his cheeks as he mumbled, “what?”
“I’m just trying to figure out why you haven’t gotten a second date yet.” Came her response, propping herself up on her forearm. “You have a nice personality, you’re attractive, I’m sure at least one of the girls caught your eye.” Y/N sighed, running a hand through her hair as she began to wonder if she’d incidentally allowed her own feelings to get in the way of her work. Maybe that’s why this was going so badly.
This was a problem.
Zuko simply shook his head, his face on fire as he listened to her words, though he couldn’t help the hand he brought to the scar on his face. Y/N had pointed out before that he was allowing his Father to control his actions even now that he was imprisoned, and Zuko was beginning to see what she meant.
Removing his hand from his face, Zuko sighed. Though he didn’t have much time to dwell on his thoughts as her hand hesitantly came to his face, placing a hand on his cheek and allowing her thumb to brush against the scar. Zuko jumped at the sudden contact, and Y/N moved to withdraw her hand almost instantly, but Zuko’s hand came to hers and held it there. Looking to her, he couldn’t read the look in her eyes as she gazed at him, and suddenly he wished he was as good at reading people as she was.
“No self-deprecating thoughts.” Y/N mumbled, “bad Zuko.” She removed her hand from his to flick his head, causing his brows to furrow.
He pouted, and Y/N let out a laugh as he spoke, “how come you haven’t found someone?” Zuko looked to her, “you’re beautiful, and smart, and just... perfect.” He didn’t notice when her cheeks warmed, “you’re a literal matchmaker, surely you’ve considered who your perfect person is.”
Y/N fell onto her back, running her hands over her face as she shook her head, “how have you not gotten a second date?” A sigh escaped her, “I haven’t had time for love before, and I just haven’t found that,” looking to him, she pursed her lips, “perfect person.” Growing up in the lower rings, she didn’t have time for an actual relationship, and her business as a matchmaker grew incredibly quickly. At the end of the day, long term just didn’t work out, Y/N barely had for herself, much less another person.
“I guess we both suck at love.” Zuko said, his tone was serious and Y/N couldn’t help but burst out into laughter as she swatted at his chest.
Too bad they couldn’t suck at love together.

ATTEMPT SEVENTEEN THROUGH TWENTY EIGHT
Smoothing over her green dress, a sign of her citizenship in the Earth Kingdom, Y/N moved to answer the knock on her bedroom door. Given how long she’d been in the Fire Nation, Y/N wondered if the Earth Kingdom would still feel like home when she returned. The idea of going back felt odd, and though that time likely wasn’t soon unless Zuko met the love of his life tonight, it was inevitable.
And it horrified her.
Holding the edge of the dress slightly to make it easier to walk, Y/N sighed and opened the door, seeing Zuko. A small smile on her face as she eyed his Fire Nation robes, “you look nice.” She complimented, tilting her head at him as she allowed her eyes to travel over his figure.
Zuko nodded, a blush coming over her cheeks, his mouth gaping open as he looked at Y/N. “You look beautiful.” She did, the dress looked amazing on her, her hair styled just right, and bracelets adorning her wrists.
“Thank you, Fire Lord Zuko.” His nose crinkled at the use of his title, coming from her it felt even weirder, wrong almost. But she continued, “mind helping me out?” She asked, moving back to her desk and taking a necklace in hand. Y/N had been struggling to put it on for the past few minutes, and now she had someone to do it for her.
He nodded, closing the door behind him, he took the necklace from her hand, and when Y/N ensured her hair was out of his way, Zuko brought the necklace around her neck. He secured the clasp, hands lingering as he adjusted it to the center of her neck. Zuko couldn’t help but notice a small scar on her shoulder, hand brushing over it.
Y/N looked over her shoulder and to him, brow raised, “how’d you get this?” He asked, brows drawn together. His hand traced the raised skin gently, Y/n could feel her cheeks warming at his touch, inhaling deeply.
She grimaced, “a knife fight I almost lost my life to.” Was her explanation. Y/N didn’t like to think back to the days when she’d resorted to several... questionable actions to stay alive. But she pushed those thoughts away as she turned to face him. “You ready?” Y/N asked, they had to get to the Gala soon, considering the fact that Zuko was the host, Y/N was shocked he’d even stopped by her room in the first place.
Zuko was silent, simply nodding as he extended his arm for her to take. And Y/N did, looping her arm around his as she smiled, “you are gonna woo so many Earth Kingdom women tonight!” Y/N exclaimed, more confidence in her voice than Zuko had.
Shame the only Earth Kingdom girl he wanted to ‘woo’ was her.
When they’d arrived at the Gala, descending the stairs together, they were greeted with the claps of the other guests. Zuko would feel the anxiety flood him, but he paid it no mind. Though Y/N could feel the way he stiffened as he ended his speech to the diplomats of all nations, “let this be a peaceful, and joyous night!”
They all burst out into cheers before the party continued, the music starting once more, and everyone returning to feasting upon the buffet, dancing along the ballroom floor or speaking with one another. All while Y/N led Zuko down the stairs, dragging him by the hand, “come on. Enjoy your own party, meet some girls.” She winked, and Zuko swore his face heated up even more than it already had.
Y/N wasn’t a fool, she knew that if she’d stuck by his side the entire night, she would serve as a repellant of any potential suitors. So naturally, much to Zuko and Y/N’s dismay, she removed herself from him, playfully shoving him towards a group of Earth Kingdom girls she’d mentioned earlier. Though there were several other clusters in the ballroom.
Zuko simply sighed, giving Y/N a small smile before making his way to the group of girls. If he was honest, he would rather be spending the Gala by her side, but he had to put in some effort. He owed Y/N that much. Besides, this was an entirely new group of girls, maybe he would find someone tonight.
“Hi there.” Zuko greeted, waving awkwardly at the girls.
This action earned him a few laughs, and he was unsure if they actually found it funny or felt the need to laugh since he was the Fire Lord. Shortly after they began introducing themselves, speaking like there was no tomorrow.
If Zuko was honest, the number of women here was overwhelming. So, as he excused himself from the conversation, much to their chagrin, he placed his cup down on the platter of one of many waiters. Making his way outside, Zuko couldn’t help but feel relieved at the fresh air that hit him on the balcony. Though he contemplated heading back inside when he noticed another girl was already there, eyes shut as she faced the sky, she turned to see him, eyes widening a fraction. “I’m sorry, I can go-”
“No!” She exclaimed, cheeks flushing in embarrassment due to her outburst, “no... it’s fine.” She turned back to look at the sky, hand clasped together, fidgeting.
Zuko stepped forward, finding himself situated across from her, leaning against the railing, “so why are you out here?”
A small laugh escaped the girl, and she ran a hand through her hair, “it’s rather stress relieving. You have a lovely view in your palace.”
He couldn’t help but feel disappointed when he realized she recognized him, though Zuko nodded along, “what’s your name? If you don’t mind me asking?” It was a stupid question, and Zuko nearly facepalmed as he pursed his lips.
“Aileen.” Came her response, and Zuko realized he recognized her name as well. She was the child of one of the more well known members of Fire Nation nobility, her parents had approached him in the past in hopes of arranging a marriage between the two of them. He had declined almost immediately. And now that Aileen turned to him, he had a feeling he made the right decision, “you’re Zuko, right?”
He exhaled deeply, nodding, “that’s me.” Sometimes, Zuko wondered what his life would’ve been like if he wasn’t Zuko, perhaps things would’ve been simpler. No, things definitely would’ve been simpler. There would be no diplomatic meetings, no wars, no idiots trying to hurt other people, no more assassination attempts, no more fake smiles and no more Galas. Of course, if he wasn’t Zuko, he never would’ve met Y/N.
“I heard you’re looking for a partner in crime.” Aileen prompted, “why aren’t you in there finding that future love of your life?”
Shrugging, Zuko looked up at the sky, “I found her. She just doesn’t want me.”
He can feel Aileen stare at him, she’s silent for a moment, and Zuko wonders what she’s thinking. Though he doesn’t need to wait long to find out as she responds, “I understand.” Aileen focuses her gaze on the glass she’d placed on the thick railing of the balcony, “the person I love probably doesn’t love me back. And even if they did, my parents disapprove.”
“Did you ask?” He felt hypocritical, Zuko himself had never spoken with Y/N in regards to his feelings, and he likely never would, but he wanted to know. “If they love you?”
Aileen laughs slightly, shaking her head, “I couldn’t bring myself to. I’m scared.” She replied, looking back to him curiously, “did you?”
“No.” He responded lamely, tapping his fingers against the railing with a sigh.
Aileen laughed at this, “I guess we are both cowards then.” She pursed her lips, “I didn’t ask because I was scared, why didn’t you?”
And then the words come spilling out, “whoever I end up with will greatly impact the whole world, whether I want to acknowledge it or not. And she doesn’t deserve that burden, nobody does.” He laughs bitterly as he continues, “she’s also the person that was hired to help me find love in the first place.” Zuko pauses, looking away from Aileen, “and I guess I’m scared too.”
“Ironic.” Aileen mumbles, bringing her eyes back to the sky, “let’s make a deal, Your Majesty.”
Zuko cringes at the use of that title, almost asking her to simply refer to him by his name, though he simply responds, “what deal?”
“We both confess. And if it goes horribly wrong, we can get married.”
Y/N can’t see the shock on Zuko’s face, but she can see how comfortable he feels with this girl, Y/N hadn’t seen her before, but she was just happy Zuko was connecting with someone. Except she also wasn’t, a bitter feeling enveloping her as she turned away, looking for something else to focus her attention on, something that didn’t hurt.
She turned to see Marcella and Evelyn in the distance, speaking with each other. Y/N supposed if she wouldn’t be finding love tonight, then at least they would. She was no fool, she saw the way they looked at each other, the glances when the other wasn’t looking. Maybe it was dumb, but Y/N found herself feeling jealous as she moved over to the buffet with a sigh. Food solved everything in her experience, after a client had a particularly bad day, food made things better.
“Perhaps some tea?” Iroh stood beside her, a kettle in his hand, he had insisted he serve tea at the Gala, though Zuko had assured him it would be just as easy to find someone else to do the job.
Y/N smiled at him, nodding as she took a cup from the array of them within the buffet, allowing Iroh to pour her some tea. “Thank you, Iroh.” Her voice is quieter than normal, and it’s clear that Iroh can tell something is wrong.
“You know, you deserve to be happy to Y/N.” His words catch her by surprise, though she doesn’t have much time to consider their meaning before flames lighting the room begin to move erratically, causing her brows to furrow.
Something was wrong.
Iroh nods to her, placing the tea kettle down as his brow furrow and she nods back, Iroh disappearing into the crowd of people. Y/N’s eyes fall back to Marcella and Evelyn, and she quickly moves to their side of the room, ignoring the hush that had fallen over the room, panicked gasps amongst them. Her hands fall onto both girl’s arms as she nods to them, “Y/N, whats going-”
Y/N is already dragging them in the direction of the exit, “get out of here, find the guards. I’m going to find Zuko.” The girls didn’t have much time to argue, as Y/N was already working her way through the panicked crowd, back to the balcony where she’d last seen Zuko. But, people were already pushing against her movements, making it difficult. Raising her head above the crowd in an attempt to see what’s going on, Y/N realizes whats happening.
Firebenders were trying to force them together, and Y/N couldn’t help but panic as she wondered if Marcella and Evelyn managed to escape and find the guards.
This was an ambush.
No, this was an assassination attempt. Zuko already knew as he watched the atmosphere of the party begin to shift, that and the person who stood before him in all black, brandishing several weapons. Alongside four others who stood by her side.
“You know, it wasn’t until I met you that I realized how bad it had gotten.” Aileen stood beside Zuko, eyes meeting his in horror as they exchanged looks. Zuko simply hoped the nod he gave her provided some semblance of comfort as he returned his attention to the person before him. “I mean, defending some lowly Earth Kingdom matchmaker? What type of career even is that?”
Her voice is almost maniacal, and Zuko can’t help but wince as he feels reminded of his sister. But he recognizes it nonetheless, Amaya. It had been months since he’d seen her, but he could still remember her voice. Her face was covered by a mask, and she wielded a sword, and if Zuko remembered correctly, she had been trained in dozens of fighting styles and was a talented bender herself. Alongside the four other men, Zuko couldn’t help but panic internally as he spoke, “Amaya, why don’t you put the swords down, and we talk about this.”
She laughs in response, ripping the mask that covered her face off and throwing it aside, “people have tried to talk to you about this. Your-” She grappled for the word, a hand yanking at her hair as she gestured to him with a sword, “your radical ideas!”
Zuko didn’t find having morals radical, but he wasn’t going to say that, not while Aileen’s life was on the line. Zuko suddenly realized why having an heir was important as he shook his head, “Amaya, look. Why don’t you let Aileen here leave, and then you and I can talk.”
Aileen looks like she’s going to protest, but Amaya glances at her red robes, a sign of her Fire Nation citizenship, and gestures for her to leave. “Get out. My problem isn’t with you.”
When Aileen doesn’t move, Amaya quickly grows frustrated, calling out to one of the guards she’d brought along that lied inside, “take this fool away.”
There’s no response, and Zuko can see panic flood Amaya’s face. And looking behind her, he quickly realizes that most of the guards have been subdued, Y/N holding one of them in her arms as she knocks them to the ground. Moving towards the balcony stealthily as Amaya’s hands begin to shake, fire sparking in her palms as she focused her attention onto Zuko. “You’re going to pay for what you’ve done to our nation.”
But Zuko wasn’t looking at her as he shook his head, hoping Y/N would understand. There was no way she could overpower Amaya, not with her bending. Y/N didn’t even have a weapon.
Now, Y/N knew for a fact that no matter how talented Zuko was, he wouldn’t put the girl beside him in danger. His priority would be keeping her alive, and given the training Amaya had as a noble, in both Firebending and fighting, she might even be as good as Zuko in a fight.
Meaning she had to be taken out of the fight.
Everything happened pretty fast after that. Zuko was shielding body coming forward to shield Aileens as he extended his freehand to Firebend at the people who’d surrounded them, only for Amaya to move out of the way. The girl was practically screaming bloody murder as she lunged at him, now wielding her sword.
Zuko didn’t have to figure out what to do next because Y/N moved faster than Amaya did, tackling the girl over the railing and down below as he began to scream.

THE FINAL ATTEMPT
Zuko’s knee is bouncing rapidly as he sits beside Iroh, who knits a scarf of some sort despite the blistering heat of the Fire Nation. He’s insisted that when Y/N returned to the Earth Kingdom she’d need it, and Zuko didn’t have the heart to disagree. Iroh had started stress-knitting about four hours ago, when Y/N had entered the room they all sat before, anxiously awaiting news of her condition.
Marcella and Evelyn are to Zuko’s left, Marcella’s sobs had quieted down, but Zuko wouldn’t be shocked if he looked over and saw tears silently streaming down her face. The girl hadn’t taken it well. Evelyn remained composed, doing her best to comfort Marcella, but the wait was clearly getting to her as well as she fidgeted with Marcella’s hands.
Seeing as Y/N had fallen from several stories up off the balcony and into the water below, Zuko didn’t really think it was possible to take the news well. But he was trying.
A pang sounded from inside the room, and Zuko practically shot up onto his feet, moving to knock on the door to discover was was wrong, only for Iroh to grab his wrist, shaking his head. Zuko exhaled deeply, beginning to pace across the hall. He found himself wishing that Katara hadn’t been busy with Water Tribe business, she was an excellent healer. Alas, Katara wasn’t there, and Zuko had to settle for one of the skilled Water Tribe diplomats instead, alongside a few others skilled in medicine.
As he paced, Zuko could feel Evelyns eyes on him, and it became clear she was itching to speak and he sighed, “what’s wrong?” There were dozens of answers to this question, the main one being the fact that Y/N could die today, so he hoped she understood what he meant.
The girl is glaring at him, and Zuko can’t help but feel uneasy. Because maybe she blames him for this as much as he blames himself, and maybe she’s going to tell him off, blame him for everything. Because if Y/N dies, she and Marcella will have no one again.
Not that Zuko would allow that. He’d grown attached to the girls as well, they were kind, and helpful. They’d help improve the interior decor of the palace, and if he was honest, it looked better than anything he ever could’ve done.
“You better tell her how you feel after this.”
Zuko’s mouth gapes open at the girl’s words, and he swears the breath leaves his longs, and its as though everything hits him then.
He would never get to tell Y/N how he felt if she died. He’d never get to listen to her try and tell a story just to go off on dozens of tangents, he’d never get to watch as she attempted to cook again, and he’d never get to hold her in his arms once more. There would be no more late night talks, and he wouldn’t hear her laugh, she wouldn’t tease him anymore and they wouldn’t walk through the courtyard feeding turtleducks again.
She’d never know he loved her.
Zuko finds himself nodding to Evelyn’s words, frozen in place as he looks to her and asks, “was I that obvious?” His voice is hoarse, and its probably because he didn’t stop screaming, even when Y/N’s body hit the water.
Marcella is laughing at his words, blowing her nose into a tissue that Evelyn hands her before she speaks, “painfully obvious.”
“For someone who’s job revolves around love, Y/N is one of the most oblivious people I’ve ever met.” Evelyn grumbles out, rubbing her eyes as she yawns.
It was late, Zuko knew that much, the guests of the party had gone to the infirmary in the palace, being tended to by doctors and any other available healers if injured. Otherwise, they’d all returned to their rooms to sleep, or more likely stay up in fear of another attack. Zuko surely would.
“Go to bed guys, it’s getting late.”
Evelyn looks at him like he’s one of the dumbest people she’s met, and if Zuko was honest, he probably was. But he simply nodded to Marcella, who had started leaning her head against Evelyn’s shoulder, eyes fluttering shut. “Uncle, why don’t you take them back to their rooms?”
Considering the fact that Zuko’s guards were around the corner, he wasn’t scared for his safety, but their presence just made him want to remain awake.
“Nephew, you should sleep as well.” His Uncle replied, though he rose from his seat, bringing the yarn and the start of the scarf under his arm.
Zuko gave his Uncle a smile, “I will. But if anything happens before then, I’ll be sure to alert you all.” He assured, nodding to Evelyn, who eyed him wearily. But she relented, shaking Marcella gently before standing up alongside her and Iroh.
When they were out of sight, Zuko plopped back down in the seat, his elbows resting on his knees as he brought his hands to his face.
And for the first time in the night he cried, his body racked with sobs as tears streamed down his face and he struggled to breathe. The pain of all that had happened felt almost unbearable. She had to live. Y/N had to live. Because Zuko was going to confess.
His fear of losing her outweighed his fear of rejection.
Wiping his tears away, Zuko suddenly felt grateful that Evelyn had left the box of tissues as he blew his nose. He sighed, his eyes piercing the door, hoping that something would happen.
As though his stare had willed her to exit the room, the healer came out, a grimace on her face as she looked to Zuko, likely because of his bloodshot eyes. The woman simply sighed, the grimace becoming a more sympathetic look. “Miss L/N lost a lot of blood... several of her bones were broken when she hit the water, especially her ribs. Her internal organs were damaged as well and... well it wasn’t very likely for her to survive.”
She’s dead.
Y/N is dead.
Oh.
“Wow, you look like a mess.”
Zuko’s head whips up, his eyes meeting Y/N’s, she’s leaning against a wooden crutch, grinning lazily at him. The healer beside her looks rather apologetic as she frantically explains, “she woke up far quicker than we anticipated and only agreed to rest if we participated in her rather cruel prank.”
So, she wasn’t a ghost.
Zuko launches himself up from the chair, nearly tackling Y/N, but the wooden crutch she uses for support serves as a reminder of her fragile state as he asks, “can I hug you?”
Her smile falters at the sound of his voice, hoarse and jagged, so she simply extends are free arm outward. Zuko takes this as an invitation for a hug, gently wrapping his arms around her waist and burying his head in her neck, Y/N wrapped her free arm around his neck, hand finding its way to the hair at the nape of his neck. “Im s-”
“It’s not your fault Zuko. I swear if you say its your fault I will throw myself over the balcony again.” She threatened, hand tightening in his hair.
Zuko laughs quietly, inhaling deeply before he speaks again, “please never do that again.”
“I make no promises.”
Sighing, Zuko releases her, “I hate you so much.”
Y/N scoffed, “you love me.” She was limping over to the bed in the middle of the room, blood coating the surrounding area. Though the doctors in the room were moving across the room that they’d placed Y/N on, and dealt with her injuries on, Zuko couldn’t help but feel sick at the sight.
She could’ve died.
“Yeah, I do.”
Y/N pauses, turning to look back at him, her mouth gapes open. Zuko’s looking away, eyes on anything but her as he inhales deeply.
The healer simply sighs, “before we do this, I should inform the two of you that Miss Y/N cannot do any... strenuous activities for at least one month.”
Zuko’s cheeks are flushing red as he shakes his head rapidly, “ma’am-”
“We’ll be taking our leave. Have fun, but not too much fun. Please.” The woman closes the door behind her once the other doctors are out of the room, and Y/N can’t stop laughing at the mortified expression on Zuko’s face, despite the sharp pain she feels in her ribs.
Taking a seat on the fresh sheets of the bed, Y/N sighs, “so you love me?” She’s picking at the sheets, “as a friend?”
Zuko suddenly realizes just how right Evelyn was as he slowly shakes his head, “no. More than a friend. I think I inadvertently sabotaged half of the dates you sent me on because of it.”
Y/N laughs quietly, eyes falling on Zuko only to see he’s looking anywhere but her, she calls out to him quietly, “Zuko. Look at me.”
He doesn’t hesitate to bring his gaze to her, eyes meeting hers as he begins to fidget with his hand. Y/N simply reaches her hand out, and he takes it. “I love you too, idiot.” She mumbles, pulling him closer and wrapping her arms around his waist. “I just wish you had told me sooner so I didn’t waste so much time trying to set you up with other women.”
A small laugh escapes him as he brings his hand to her hair, “how do I know you weren’t purposely giving me bad matches because you were in love with me?”
Y/N removes her head from his stomach, looking up at him, her nose crinkles, “unlike you, I am a professional.” Zuko flicks her forehead, and Y/N pouts at him, hand coming up to his face, “can I kiss you?”
She can feel his face warm, but he nods rather enthusiastically nonetheless, and Y/N finds herself smiling at his as she uses her hands to pull his face downward towards her. His lips meet hers, and Zuko finds himself feeling complete, hands coming to Y/N’s face in an attempt to pull her closer while hers move to his ball up his robes that he’d yet to change.
Zuko pulls away first, forehead resting on hers, “you need to sleep.”
Y/N scoffed, eyes narrowing at him, “you need to sleep.” Looking to the bed, she raises a brow at him, “wanna lay with me?”
“I don’t think that’s a good idea, I could accidentally injure you or-”
Rolling her eyes, Y/N yanks him onto the bed, making her way to the other side and getting comfortable, “I’ll be fine.”
Yeah, everything would be fine. Maybe not for the Fire Nation, seeing as Y/N would potentially help rule a nation but...
Everything would be fine.

How did Mai and Zuko bring up the “I’m the blue spirit” issue for the first time. I believe you told sometime your HC is that she already suspected it, but any idea how the conversation was?
Hi!! Yes, I hc that Mai suspected it here, and also I have this cute headcanon about Mai x the Blue Spirit.
But your ask inspired me, so I wrote a mini-fic. Enjoy!
“Zuko stretched his limbs on the sofa that he ordered to bring to one of the chambers after Mai noticed they have no place for the cuddling in his huge palace. His hands were wrapped around Mai, his palm was drawing circles on her back while he nuzzled into her silky hair. Mai shifted closer and hugged him more tightly. He was sure she was smiling.
"There will be the shooting stars this week," she murmured into his robes.
Mai had mentioned it a few times before their breakup. How being a little girl she read all those legends about the stars falling and how she always wanted to see it with her own eyes; how she sneaked to a balcony every year in attempts to see something beautiful and mighty, provided by spirits, but the lights of the city blinded all the view. And even how she ran away one night to the fields behind of Caldera, but was found and grounded by her parents.
Zuko smiled fondly and kissed the top of her head. It always warmed him that his cool girlfriend had a soft spot for such romantic stuff.
"We can go," he suggested willingly.
"Surrounded by a bunch of your guards? How romantic," she drawled. "No, thanks."
"No, I can...-" Zuko stopped talking, frowning. His friends knew about the Blue Spirit, as well as his uncle, who convinced him to stop it and let it go, but he never talked about it with Mai. How he possibly could start this conversation? Hey, Mai! Funny thing, babe, I'm the Fire Lord but I'm also the most dangerous and wanted criminal in the Fire Nation and the Earth Kingdom?
Mai got up on her elbow, shooting him a perceptive look. "What? Put a stupid theatrical mask on your face and run into the night?"
Zuko stiffened. "How do you...? Who told you?" He demanded impatiently.
"Mai, I..."
"No one needed to tell me!" She replied, almost snapped back. "There is only one idiot in all the four nations who would invade the most secured stronghold all alone!" She pulled back.
"I hate it! I hated it!" she admitted, her fingers clenched on his robes, her voice dripped with anger and something unexplainable, something which caused Zuko's heart to sting. "Every time when I heard new rumors, every time when someone saw you... I-I prayed to Agni, and spirits... I didn't know if you're dead or alive, or hurt..." She went silent, trembling, squeezed her eyes as if remembering all at once. She rarely lost control over her emotions like that.
"Agni, Mai," he whispered, stunned, and reached to caress her face. He couldn't even guess it. That she knew, that she had cared. Spirits, all this time! "I'm so sorry, Mai."
"Your lame sorry cannot atone all the sleepless nights," she argued, but softer this time, at least allowing him to touch her.
Zuko's thumbs trailed down her jawline. "I'm sorry!" he repeated, insisted, pulling her closer. "You know I should've captured the Avatar. You know how desperate I was."
She shook her head. "You should've been careful! You promised me, Zuko."
"I know... I'm sorry, Mai. I really am."
Heavy silence fell between them. Mai looked him in the eyes for a few long, unbearable moments. Doubt, fear and love - all that she didn't say aloud, all that she'd been hiding all these years he saw in her gaze.
"You're such a dork," she finally sighed, surrendered.
Zuko smirked. "Yeah, I've been told."
"Don't ever do it again!"
"But I...-"
"Zuko!"
He recognized this tone. If all these years of pining and loneliness taught him something, it's that he couldn't lose Mai again.
"Alright," he muttered reluctantly.
"Promise?"
"Promise."
Mai nodded and sank once again into his embrace. Zuko closed his eyes and tried to relax, holding her in his arms.
He had almost drifted off, exhausted after the long day filled with politics, and lulled by Mai's warmth and scent, when she made the slightest move and reached to his face. He opened his eyes, Mai looked up at him with a glint in her eyes, a mischievous smile, that one he adored so much, was playing on her lips.
"How would my fiancé react when he found out I cheated on him with a masked criminal?"
Zuko chuckled. "Oh, he would be heart-broken! Totally ruined!"
"Mhm, what a vicious woman I am," Mai continued, amused, "to hurt our poor Fire Lord's feelings like that."
Zuko rolled her onto her back, thus now he was hanging over her. "Indeed, Lady Mai," he whispered, closing the distance between their lips. "That's a treason."
He felt her smile when their lips met. Mai clung to his shoulders, replying willingly, and Zuko melted into a sweet kiss.
"So, does this mean you don't hate Blue Spirit anymore?" He asked after they broke apart.
Mai chuckled softly. "I think it means... I actually kind of like him."”
That's it. Thank you sm for the ask!

Avatar Hot Take #2
Time for another topic that might fuel some backlash and more controversy.
The amount of negative flak given to Aang for kissing Katara when he shouldn’t have in the EIP (Ember Island Players) episode -- compared to how much given to Korra when she first kissed Mako in the SoC (Spirit of Competition) episode -- is ridiculous:
Now let me give y’all a disclaimer right now: I am NOT saying that kissing Katara was the right thing for Aang to do at the time. In fact, I agree that it wasn’t.
With that said, however, nor was kissing Mako the right thing for Korra to do.
Yet why do I see many people calling Aang “selfish”, “entitled”, and even “ab*sive” for his error in the EIP episode? Heck, I’ve seen comments go far enough to imply that Aang should’ve been punched in the face! So would anyone mind telling me exactly where the frick all those kinds of comments are for Korra?
And no, what Aang and Korra did in the EIP and the SoC episodes respectively were not different. They were anything but different. Let’s examine the context of the specific scenario of each of the two episodes, shall we?:
EIP Scenario:
Aang asked Katara if she really meant what she said about seeing him as a “little brother” even though that’s what her actress said. Even after she replied that she herself never said so and only her actress did - implying that she did NOT see him like a brother - Aang still replied, “But it’s true, isn’t it?” Plus, he didn’t even say it with an angry or explosive tone; rather he said it with a clearly saddened yet calm one. This implies that if Katara had bluntly said that she had no romantic interest in him, Aang would’ve ultimately been fine with that.
Aang mentions to Katara the time when they previously and mutually kissed during the Invasion (and yes, it was mutual since Katara kissed back). He also told her that he thought they’d start dating each other by then. However, he acknowledges that they still weren’t together regardless. And Aang was still obviously broken-hearted yet calm when saying all of this. And to be honest, many hints were shown of Katara having at least some romantic interest in Aang such as Katara’s previous cheek kisses she’d only ever given to Aang; her suggesting the idea of kissing in the Cave of Two Lovers; and etc. So Aang really wasn’t wrong to believe that she wanted to be with him.
Afterwards, Katara solemnly says, “Aang, I don’t know.” Aang then asks, “Why don’t you know?” Katara explains, “’Cause we’re in the middle of a war, and we have other things to worry about. This isn’t the right time.” “Well, when is the right time?” Aang asked. “Aang, I’m sorry, but right now, I’m just a little confused,” Katara said as an ultimatum. So right here, Katara doesn’t say that she doesn’t want to date Aang at all. Rather, she doesn’t whether she actually will be able to or not since they were fighting in the war, and Aang still had yet to face the firelord. And at the time, neither Katara nor Aang knew how much longer the war would last, nor did either of them know if they’d still end up alive by the end of it. Aang, however, didn’t understand that. Rather, he started growing impatient, for he wanted to get a clear and direct confirmation from Katara herself if wanted to be with him or not -- which wasn’t exactly what she gave him.
And as we all know, Aang non-consensually tries to kiss Katara afterwards; she immediately pulls herself away from the attempted kiss, shouted at him for it, and stormed off. This part doesn’t need any explanations.
SoC:
Korra told Mako, “Save your breath. You’ve already made it clear how you feel about me.” “No, I haven’t. What I’m trying to say is as much as you drive me crazy, I also think you’re pretty amazing,” Mako replied. So right here, it’s blatantly made clear that Mako likes Korra back.
“So you do like me?” Korra asked. “Yes,” Mako sighed with uncertainty, “but I like Asami too. I don’t know. Things are complicated. I’m feeling really confused, and -- .” Then, as most of us know, Korra interrupted Mako with a non-consensual kiss, yet Mako kissed back regardless. Bolin, seeing it all, broken-heartedly runs off bawling. Mako and Korra blow up into an short argument about it, and Mako storms off as a result. So basically, what made Mako confused was that he romantically liked his girlfriend at the time, Asami, and Korra; he didn’t know he should’ve decided what to do about that.
So in both scenarios, Katara and Mako, at the very least, reciprocated Aang’s and Korra’s interests in them repsectively (even if it possibly was to a lesser extent). And yes, Katara DID develop romantic feelings for Aang. Hints proving so existed, as subtle as they may have been. However, Katara and Mako also explicitly said that they were confused, yet Aang and Korra still kissed them regardless. So really, there’s nothing that suggests that Korra kissing Mako in the SoC episode was more okay than Aang kissing Katara in the EIP episode.
Heck, I’d even argue that Korra’s kiss was actually even worse than Aang’s. Like I said before, Mako was already dating Asami at the time -- and Korra knew that herself! And while albeit Korra really was seeing mostly as a platonic hangout, she was technically dating Bolin as well; therefore, she ended up ripping Bolin’s heart when he saw her kiss his brother. It doesn’t matter if Mako kissed Korra back unlike Katara with Aang. You don’t kiss someone who already has a significant other. So if any of you anti-kataangers really want to preach about consent, then you ought to be talking about Korra more.
Now let me get one more disclaimer out of the way: I’m NOT saying all of this to bash on Korra or her relationship with Mako! Just like Aang — who angrily called himself an idiot after realizing his mistake of kissing Katara at an inappropriate time — Korra realized her mistake very soon after. In fact, we even get to see Korra apologize to Bolin for breaking his heart. For me to bash on Korra and her relationship with Mako, I’d have to end up bashing on Aang and his relationship with Katara — and that’s DEFINITELY NOT the purpose of this post.
TL;DR: Cut the double standards! Either bash on both Aang and Korra for their inappropriately-timed kisses or don’t bash either of them at all!

Sweet Dreams pt. 1
So, I've had to switch my medication recently for my anxiety, and it's been a bit rough. I normally have a bit of a problem with nightmares because of stress, but since starting Effexor it's been like... on steroids. One of my ways of coping with my mental health is writing, so I've started working on an Obey Me! series of short fics with each of the brothers comforting an MC who's been suffering from long-term night terrors as a medication side-effect. I debated about whether to post them or not, but ultimately I feel like if they can be comforting reads to someone else in a similar situation to mine, of course I'd want to share them! So, here's part one with Lucifer. Please know this is based on my own personal experiences with my anxiety and medications- mental health isn't one-size-fits-all, and everybody experiences it differently on all fronts. Not everybody will experience anxiety the way MC does in these fics, and that's okay! MC is not meant to be representative of everyone everywhere who has ever dealt with having an anxiety disorder- I personally think such a thing is impossible anyway. That being said, please practice good reader discretion if mental health is a hard topic for you- the last thing I want to do is harm someone else's mental health with my writing. I'll post specific trigger warnings just above the cut, so you'll know exactly what you're getting yourself into before you continue!
Now that the long disclaimer is out of the way... I hope that you enjoy this small fic series, reader! It was cathartic for me to write, and I hope they can bring comfort to others too.
Genre: Comfort with Lucifer x gn!reader (if you squint)
Word Count: 2.2k
TW: Mentions of anxiety and treatments, depictions of anxiety and nightmare aftermath, descriptions of nightmares
Lucifer was worried.
Not that he would admit to it. He was the Avatar of Pride, and as such he had an image to maintain. After all, just because someone fails to reply to text messages and calls- or does something out of their norm, like skipping breakfast- it doesn't necessarily mean there's something dire afoot.
Still, he couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong. Lucifer tried to school his facial features into something close to neutral as his brothers fretted and discussed (Y/N)'s radio silence, and now their absence at breakfast. Mammon was the first to make a commotion about it, of course, causing the other brothers to slowly voice their own concerns about the resident human exchange student.
"I'm tellin' ya, it's just not like them! We ough'ta check on them. What if they caught some kind of weird human disease and died in their sleep?!" Mammon boomed out, fists clenched and resting on the table as he leaned forward over his plate.
"I highly doubt that, Mammon. I don't know of any human disease with such a quick onset and short incubation period before death. Still, it is a bit worrying. Should we make sure they're alright?" Satan, ever the voice of reason, spoke calmly, looking to the eldest to gauge his reaction to his question.
"Maybe they had a late start? I did suggest a new morning skincare regimen for them; maybe they've taken my advice?" Asmo practically crooned, no doubt preening at the thought of a small success with the exchange student- and probably thinking other impure thoughts related to them getting ready for the day.
"They need to make sure they eat. It's no good trying to learn on an empty stomach," Beel interjected, shaking his head and settling a hand on his stomach, clearly appalled at the thought of enduring that kind of experience.
Lucifer kneaded the small ache that had started to form between his eyes from his brothers' bickering and rapid-fire speculations. A sharp pain lanced through his skull from said place when Mammon brought his closed fists down on the table forcefully, rattling the dishes and forcefully pushing himself and his chair back.
"That's it, I'm checkin' on 'em! If all you guys are gonna do is sit around-"
"Enough, Mammon," Lucifer spoke, commanding the attention of all his brothers. A pregnant silence fell over the room as the Morningstar sighed, casually tossing his linen napkin onto the table beside his empty plate as he calmly pushed his chair back to stand. "I will check on them myself. The rest of you are to go about your days as normal unless you hear otherwise."
A couple of the brothers muttered angrily under their breath, but most seemed satisfied with the decision. Without another word, Lucifer strode from the room, leaving his brothers to clean up and be on their way to RAD.
When Lucifer reached (Y/N)'s room, his superhuman hearing picked up soft sniffles from within, heightening his concern about the human. He rapped his knuckles against the solid wood of the door, calling out their name gently but at a volume where he knew he would be heard. When he didn't hear them stir, and nobody came to the door, he resolved himself to intruding upon a potentially sensitive situation. "(Y/N), I'm coming in."
When he opened the door and took a couple steps across the threshold, he panicked a bit at first, not seeing any sign of (Y/N) in the room. Another small sniff allayed those fears, though, and he closed the door softly behind him, making his way into the space as he looked for the human. He finally found them curled up into a small ball on the floor in a corner of the room, out of sight of the door, their face pressed into their knees as they trembled.
The sight in front of him broke Lucifer's heart. (Y/N) had brought such brightness to his and his brothers' lives, showing them the utmost care and showering them with love they hadn't realized they were starved for. To see them like this- shaking with pent-up sobs and white knuckles as they squeezed their hands into fists- was a blow directly to the eldest's normally ice-cold heart.
"(Y/N)," he breathed, slowly approaching as if he was walking towards a frightened, injured fawn. His entire presence softened as he got down on one knee beside the upset exchange student, fighting the overwhelming urge to gently turn their face to his or pull them into his arms. "What's happened?"
(Y/N) shook their head, their arms tightening around their knees. "It's stupid. I'll be fine. Please don't worry about me- I'll be down for breakfast soon."
Lucifer's face pulled down into an even deeper frown at their words, bothered that they were so quick to invalidate themself and push comfort away. "Well- that's why I'm here. Breakfast was over an hour ago, and my brothers are worried about you."
(Y/N)'s head shot up at that, and for the first time Lucifer got a good look at their flushed, tear-stained face. "God- I'm so, so sorry, I didn't mean to worry anybody- I'm such a burden-"
Lucifer made hushing noises, and unable to restrain himself anymore he sat fully on the ground, pulling the human into his arms as they hiccupped and began to sob. When they didn't push him away and began leaning into him, he tightened his hold, rubbing small circles into their lower back as their tears soaked his left shoulder, all the while murmuring soothing words in their ear. After what seemed like a small slice of eternity, but what in reality may have only been fifteen minutes or half of an hour, the exchange student's tears slowed, then stopped altogether, though silent sobs continued to wrack their smaller frame.
Lucifer lifted his head from where he had rested it on top of theirs, leaning back slightly to see their face as he gently tilted it towards him. Red eyes looked back at him, glazed with exhaustion and something else he couldn't quite pinpoint. Reaching up with a gloved hand, he gently cupped their face in the palm of his hand, wiping away the tears he could reach with his thumb.
"You aren't a burden, (Y/N). You go out of your way for myself and my brothers, doing things nobody asked of you to lift us up and make our lives easier. We've needed somebody like you for a long time now, and if anything we are a burden on you. We worry about you because we care." Lucifer broke the silence, his voice gentle but leaving no room for argument. "I won't push you into telling me what's wrong... but if you would like to talk about it, I promise I will do everything in my power to make things right."
Their eyes wavered, then shifted to the side, a frown continuing to mar their beautiful face. "Lu, I... it means a lot to me for you to say something like that. I just... I don't think there is anything you can do, or anybody for that matter, and not for lack of wanting to."
(Y/N) paused for breath, and Lucifer waited, sensing their internal debate about disclosing their struggle to him. Finally, they sighed, sagging against him as if all the strength had just left their body. "You saw my file," they said flatly, their head against his chest. Lucifer tightened his hold around them once again, pressing his face to the crown of their head and making a small sound of affirmation.
"Did it say anything about my anxiety disorder?"
Lucifer paused. Yes, he had noted that there was a mental health condition in their profile- generalized anxiety, with therapist notes stating it had a strong social skew- but it had never come up in conversation with (Y/N) before, and with how bright and happy they usually were, he thought they might be in remission- either that, or managing it extremely well.
(Y/N) continued on before he could answer them. "Barbatos has been making sure I have my medication- which is great, since of all the SSRIs I've tried it's the only one that seems to help level me out. But, the bad thing is... my doctor didn't tell me that a lot of people experience nightmares while on it, and ever since I've started it, it seems like I'm having them almost every single night." They paused for breath, their entire body tensing up, and Lucifer began to soothingly stroke their bicep with his thumb, where his hand had settled after they shifted. "Most of the time they're really vivid and... weird? Like, I had a nightmare a few nights ago that I was leading an expedition into the far North back in the human realm, and just as we were about to reach an Inuit settlement I got lured over the side of the boat by sea monsters and drowned... which has absolutely no relevance to my life experience. Obviously. But in the moment they're so scary-" They shuddered, then continued, almost as if they couldn't stop themself now that they had started speaking. "And then other times they're those really vague ones- like, running away from something through a deep forest at night, and suddenly you're falling off a cliff. But then there's, like, maybe 25% of them that actually are relevant to me- some of the worst periods and moments of my life- and those-" They almost choked on their words at the end, and Lucifer squeezed gently, worried they might start crying again.
When they stayed silent, Lucifer spoke. "How long has this been going on?"
There was a pause before the human answered, as if they knew he wouldn't be happy. "Since before I was brought here."
Lucifer was shocked. The exchange student had been here for several months already, and he was only just now hearing about this? Another pang lanced through his heart, wondering how many other mornings they had spent like this, and he deeply regretted the thought of them spending so many nights tortured by their own mind, all alone.
"You should have come to me sooner, (Y/N). You didn't have to suffer in silence." Lucifer's tone softened the words, and he again leaned back to get a look at the expression on the exchange student's face.
"I didn't want to be- troublesome. All your brothers have their own commitments and things they do, and you especially have so much on your plate. I didn't want to disrespect anybody's time."
Just when Lucifer thought things couldn't get worse, they did. He could hear their fear of being a burden, even with their carefully chosen words. The exchange student had put themself through months of agony, all because they hadn't wanted to trouble him. The revelation deeply disturbed him. A handful of months was nothing in a demon's life, just a blip, but for a human? That was a very long time.
"You are incredibly important, to all of us. Your struggles are never a waste of our time, even if you feel they're insignificant." Lucifer spoke firmly, trying to put every ounce of the conviction he felt into his voice. He reached up again to gently turn the human's face towards him, meeting their eyes with his own crimson ones. "Please, don't put yourself through something like this again. If I can bring even a small amount of the comfort you've brought me back to you, I would move the heavens to do it. Promise me."
Their eyes glimmered, and their bottom lip trembled. "I promise," they almost whispered, their voice choked up.
Lucifer impulsively brought his face closer to theirs, softly placing a chaste kiss on their forehead. The exchange student sniffled, bringing their hands up to wipe at their face.
"I will talk to Solomon and Satan about any potions they might know of to combat your nightmares. In the meantime, please come find me in the event that they wake you up in the middle of the night. I'm no stranger to night terrors."
When they acquiesced, he smiled, satisfied. "Now, get dressed. I'm informing Lord Diavolo that we're taking a personal day off- no buts." He spoke, already seeing the protest in their eyes and on their lips, which had parted on the start of a word. "We'll do whatever you want. My treat."
Their brows furrowed. "Won't you get in trouble?"
Lucifer stood, bringing (Y/N) up with him. "Not if I'm doing it for the exchange student's benefit. I'll give you ten minutes while I make the call." The softness the Morningstar had displayed was now gone, replaced with his usual composure as he began walking towards the door, fishing his D.D.D. out of his pocket as he moved.
"Lu?"
He paused at the door, turning back to look at the human. Their eyes were glimmering in the dim light of the room, arms wrapped around their waist. Lucifer thought they were about to cry again until he recognized the sheer gratitude in their expression.
"Thank you, for this- and for everything."
Lucifer showed a soft smile, just for them. "Anything for you, (Y/N)."

i am and i am not (what you choose to see)
This is a birthday fic for @rosy-cheekx, but in many ways I wrote it as much for myself as I did for them.
Featuring: a gender-questioning Martin in the safehouse. What better time to explore one’ gender identity than while one is on the run from dangerous eldritch forces?
Content warnings (please let me know if there anything i’ve missed): kissing, very minor internalized transphobia, and a brief discussion of Martin’s mother.
AO3 Link: here~
.
“There’s no rush, Martin. Take your time,” Jon raises his voice from the other side of their bedroom door, passing time running his fingers across Daisy’s sparse knick-knacks—just enough of them to present a front of homeyness to any errant visitors but not enough of them to clutter her otherwise spartan living space. Several Archers novels and otherwise miscellaneous reading materials line the single squat bookshelf in the entire cottage, an unbroken coating of dust overlaying everything. Jon picks up a porcelain dog (or a wolf?) and rolls it over in his hands.
“The longer I take, the more likely it is I’m never going to leave this room.” Martin almost-yells back, interrupting the muffled frustrations of someone wrangling an unfamiliar article of clothing.
“And what a shame that’d be. I rather hoped we’d trot down to the village today for a late lunch.”
"Gotta take advantage of the warm weather while we have it," Martin adds.
"Exactly."
"And I'm sure you have no ulterior motives whatsoever."
"Yes, of cour—wait, what?"
“Don’t worry," Martin says with a worrying lilt. "I know what you’re really after.”
Jon pauses and, after a beat, replies, “Oh? And what would that be?”
“Here, I’ll set the scene for you: enter Fiona’s Used Books.” Jon can see (in his mind’s eye, not his eldritch one) Martin preparing his best mock-theatrical pose before continuing. “In the far-right corner, the side of the establishment that faces the setting sun, is a raised platform. Cushions and pillows of all shapes and colors and sizes are strewn about the platform, some left contorted by their previous users before they left the shop to go about their day. Two wide-pane windows allow a full complement of the sun’s rays to gently warm the area. A lone figure lies nestled among several cozy-looking pillows, completely dead to the world but for a purring cat atop the figure’s chest—”
“Yes, yes, all right. You’ve made your point,” Jon grouses. “I hope you know that I consider spending time with you much more important than sunbathing with the bookshop owner’s cat.”
“I know, Jon; don’t worry.” An audible grin carries through the door.
Jon directs his own smile at the door and says, “Yes, well, now that you mention it, I did want to stop at the bookshop if we had time.”
“I think we can make that work. I’d hate to miss seeing you be adorable with Maggie.”
Jon sputters a bit in futile indignation. Martin has made his opinion of Jon's alleged adorableness abundantly clear, and it's not worth challenging him on it. He'd let Martin have this, even though the idea of anyone thinking he's adorable rankles him almost as much as the word spooky does.
(This is less the case coming from Martin, but he’d sooner shuffle off his mortal coil than tell him that.)
The weight of the porcelain wolf—he’s decided—in his hand grabs his attention. In fidgeting with it, he’s managed to rub all the dust off its coat, revealing a delicate blue glaze swirling around the figure. Wiping the excavated dust on his trousers, a concerning realization creeps into Jon's awareness. "Martin?" He calls out.
Martin yells back something questioning, the exact words lost in their reverberations around the inside of their bedroom.
“I know you’re trying to distract me right now,” Jon says matter-of-factly. “If you don’t want to do this anymore, I completely understand.”
All sounds of movement cease on the other side of the door—worryingly quickly.
“Martin?” Jon ventures.
“No. I…want to do this. I want to be more myself.”
Jon nods. “All right. Let’s have a look at you, then.”
It takes several long seconds, but the door creaks open, leaving just enough room for Martin to poke through the gap and reveal dark, furrowed brows set in a face that belies its owner’s vocal confidence just a moment ago. Tension lends Martin’s grip on the door a strength that looks painful from where Jon stands.
“Just gimme a second, gimme a second. Let me…let me get my bearings.” Martin’s visible shoulder, draped in a sheer dark-blue fabric, lifts and sinks with long, deep breaths.
A wave of concern washes over Jon. “What’s wrong, love?”
“I’m-I’m scared, I think. There’s no reason to be scared, but—"
“Who says you need a reason to be scared of something?” Jon interjects, and he immediately regrets the hard edge he hears in them.
Martin exhales sharply and averts his eyes away from Jon, grip tightening on the door, something Jon wouldn’t have thought possible. “Oh, you know, just the fact that we’re on the run from a body-hopping avatar of the Beholding, who can see us through anything even resembling an eye and almost certainly knows exactly where we are.”
“Yes…I know. I’ve been trying not to think about it, if I’m being honest. But even though there’s this uncertainty looming over us, you’re more than justified in feeling afraid of more…mundane things.”
Martin can’t help but scoff at that. “Yeah. Right."
“Do you…do you want to talk about what’s going on?” Jon asks, softness smothering any nascent trace of compulsion. The Beholding doesn’t get to have this, not if Jon has anything to do with it.
“I don’t….” Martin exhales again. “I’ve never tried to be this before,” he says, staring at the neat rows of hardwood planks to Jon’s left. “So much of my life has been just letting other people see me how they wanted to see me because it…I don’t know, helped me be someone specific to them when they needed it. I’ve been someone who won’t stir up a fuss; someone to project their frustrations onto; someone who cares for others for the sake of it; and, definitely most frequently, someone who presents as a man.
“There never seemed a point in saying, no, there’s more here than what I’m letting you see, you know? Sometimes it’s simpler to reduce myself to a single quality, even if it’s never helped me be close to people.
“But if I leave this cottage now, people are going to try to categorize me, try to match me up with some image they have preconceived in their minds, and they won’t be able to. And I’m not sure I should want that anymore, either. I guess the main thing is….” He pauses, collecting his thoughts. “It’s terrifying to try to be something other than what the world sees you to be.”
Jon can’t let that go unanswered. Jon needs Martin’s attention for this, so he brings his hands to rest on each of his cheeks, not so much holding him in place but gently suggesting that’s his intention. Jon wouldn’t begrudge Martin his space if he needed it.
“You’re right. It is terrifying letting people see past the outward veneer we put up.” Jon says, concern still present but receding. “It’s not really my place to tell you how to work through that terror, but I am here for you—all of you, not just the parts of you you’re used to showing the world—and I’ll support you however I can.”
“God, Jon, how can you just say things like that?”
Jon makes a sound that’s something just shy of a laugh. “Because they’re true, Martin.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah. Come on out, Martin; it’s just us, and I want to see all of you, if you’ll let me.”
Still mostly hidden by the door, Martin stares at Jon, Jon with his myriad marks and scars; his long, unbound gray-streaked hair; and an extra ten years perpetually set in his shoulders. He’s pinned by the intensity of the affection in Martin’s eyes.
“Can I kiss you first?” Martin asks, voice terribly quiet.
The request shakes Jon to his core, but he recovers quickly, nodding his assent. “Please do.”
Martin steps out from behind the door and kisses Jon, Jon’s eyes closing on reflex before he can get a good look at him. The romance novels Jon used to pick up when the ache for a happy ending of his own became too painful to ignore any longer would have him feeling light and airy, almost senseless, as if suspended in space and time as he and Martin exchanged breath. Jon has never felt more grounded. He’s never felt more aware of every sensation within and without his body; the sensations of Martin’s hot breath on his face and his chapped lips pressing against his own keep him firmly tethered to the here and now. Jon’s heart hammers in his chest—so much so he’s sure Martin can feel it, too, their chests pressed together as they are.
When they break apart, Jon opens his eyes and says breathlessly, “Let’s get a good look at you. The mirror’s just over here.” Jon takes his hands back to make the journey easier but feels his heart drop when Martin looks back at the door left ajar in their haste to come together. He looks bereft. Bereft of what, Jon’s can’t be entirely sure, but Jon makes a judgment call and grabs one of Martin’s hands and pulls him along toward the far end of the room, their fingers interlaced.
It had seemed a bit odd for Daisy to have such a vanity piece, but Jon's thankful for it and thankful it wasn't as firmly affixed to the wall in their bedroom as it at first seemed. It would have made for cramped space indeed to have them both crowding around it, and Jon doesn’t want Martin to be alone for this.
They stop just in front of the mirror, Jon off to the side and Martin situated front and center. He gives Jon’s hand a grateful squeeze and looks at his reflection.
“What do you see when you look at yourself, love?” Jon prompts, squeezing Martin’s hand right back.
“I see myself wearing this dress we found rather miraculously in this northern Scottish village of three hundred whole people.”
“And?”
“And it’s…fwooshy.”
“Fwooshy.”
Martin nods with all the sage wisdom of a learned poet. “Yes. It’s light and it moves when I move. It feels like it’s barely touching me at all times, which is so different from how my normal trousers and jumpers feel.”
“Ah, I see what you mean.”
“Mm-hmm. And it’s just pretty, don’t you think?
“Indeed.” Jon debates drawing attention to the question Martin is dancing around, but he trusts Martin to get there in time. “I thought so the moment we found it.”
Martin makes a non-committal sound. “You know, this is a lovely color on me.”
“Come to think of it, I’ve never really seen you wear darker colors before now. You always wore jumpers with a lot of bright colors around the Archives.”
“Yeah. It was, um. My mum, she used to say stuff like, ‘Why do you want to look so dreary all the time? Bright colors look so much better on you,’ and I guess that stuck.” Martin’s voice takes on an affect somewhere between disappointed and exhausted as he imitates his mother, and Jon struggles not to form opinions about that until they’ve had time to talk about her more. “I think she liked looking at the brighter colors I’d wear, especially once she couldn’t really leave our flat very often. I want to think they reminded her of the outside. She never said that, though. I don’t know.
“Wearing a color like this makes me happy, though. Wearing delicate clothes like this that don’t hide me away makes me happy. I want to say I feel….” Martin trails off.
“I feel beautiful, Jon. I really, really do.”
Jon tugs Martin’s hand, still joined with his own, up to his lips and places a kiss on his knuckles, at once affirming you’re beautiful, love and urging Martin to continue.
Visibly reorienting himself, Martin continues: “I see a Martin I’ve never let myself be before. A Martin not at odds with himself. With the rest of the world, maybe, but not with himself. I want to be him, Jon.”
“Then be him.”
“What, just like that?”
“Well, not ‘just like that.’ It’ll take time to feel comfortable presenting your whole self to other people, and that’s okay. The time and effort will be worth it; the world is better for having you, all of you, in it.”
Martin nods shakily, looking for all the world like he’s adrift in the middle of the ocean with sliver of land visible in any direction.
Jon waits for Martin to gather his thoughts. It's the least he can do, lend Martin his patience, patience he's long deserved and nary gotten from Jon for most of their relationship. Plus, it gives Jon some time to look, to really look at this beloved person standing next to him.
Jon's never given much weight to a person's looks as a part of his attraction to them. More often than not, Jon would start to find someone pleasing to look at only after becoming attracted to them in other ways. Otherwise, people were people and what they looked like mattered little in the face of their ideas, their arguments, and their kindnesses (or lack thereof).
Things progressed much the same way with Martin, and now? Well, Jon would like to never stop looking at Martin, thank you very much, and the universe would do well to cooperate with him on that.
Jon looks and looks and looks as Martin twists from side to side, watching as the dress billows out around him. The dress is elegant, made more so by the person wearing it. It's long, the navy chiffon wrap falling down around Martin’s ankles in gentle fluttering waves. A more opaque under-layer provides him some coverage from his chest to his mid-thighs but by no means diminishes his silhouette: soft and sturdy in equal measures. The dress cinches together an inch or so below his pecs, highlighting the generous curve of his hips. Shoulders Jon knows teem with freckles are enveloped in wide navy chiffon sleeves. The wrap-around style of the dress creates a deep V-shaped neckline, revealing more lovely freckles spread across his ample chest.
Martin is gorgeous—full stop. He fills out the dress beautifully, fabric flush with his skin in all the right places. Jon has to keep himself from flying apart with fondness for the man. The dress suits him; there was no way Jon could have anticipated how much it would after observing its shape uninhabited.
Martin cuts through Jon’s musing with a whisper: “Thank you, Jon.”
“For what?”
“For…for being here with me. Throughout all this.”
“There’s nowhere I’d rather be, Martin,” Jon says in a tone that brooks no argument.
“Right. Cool,” he says airily, earning a light chuckle from Jon. He’s not at all surprised when he finds himself at the receiving end of a playful nudge.
“If you’re up to it, I’d still love to go into the village and share a meal with you, show you off to our lovely neighbors.” Jon stops for a moment before continuing, gesturing wildly with his free hand, “That is to say, I’m not trying to imply you’re my possession or that I get to parade you around as I please. I just mean that….” Jon looks deep into earthy brown eyes and presses on. “I just mean that I want everyone to know and see how much of a privilege it is to be with you, to be able to bear witness to you putting more of yourself out into the world—if you’re ready.”
“We’re already the novel English couple from out of town staying in the infamous nigh-abandoned cottage on a mysterious holiday—what’s another oddity for the list, eh?”
“Hey! I won’t have anyone talking about my—oh.” Jon makes a thoughtful noise in the back of his throat. “It occurs to me that you might prefer different terminology for yourself. Is it still all right for me to refer to you as my boyfriend’? Or would you prefer something without a gender connotation like ‘partner’?”
“Jon, I spent the last two and a half years wanting to be your boyfriend, and that hasn’t changed. Having you call me that doesn’t bother me and is, in fact, one of my dreams come true.” Martin lets go of Jon’s hand and wraps him up in his arms; Jon’s follow suit. “Thanks for asking, though. I’ll let you know if anything doesn’t feel quite right.”
Jon buries his face in the crook of Martin’s neck, savoring the warmth and gentle scent of something vaguely herbal permeating through the chiffon dress. They’ll return to Martin’s comment later, he’s sure. “All right. I like ‘boyfriend,’ too, just for the record.”
“I’m glad,” he says, leaning his head on Jon’s.
“So,” Jon starts, pouring all the comfort he can manage into his embrace, “how about it? A late lunch at the pub, and then we can go see Maggie if there's time?”
Martin pulls away from Jon and smiles. “Yeah. Yeah, I think I’m good. Let’s get going,” he says.
“Yes, let’s.” Jon moves toward their makeshift mudroom, which is nothing more than a sorry shoe rack leaned against the wall next to the front door and a couple of wooden pegs designed to hang heavy coats.
“And, Jon?”
Jon turns part of the way back around, cocking his head to the side in mild confusion. “Yes?”
There’s a subtle tension in Martin’s stance when Jon looks back at him, but he’s standing up noticeably straight and puffing himself up. This is familiar to him; he imagines he looks the same way when he’s about to go into a situation that involves delicate social interactions.
However, this is unfamiliar to him as something Martin does in the face of imminent discomfort. Martin isn’t a lip-worrier. Nor is he a fidgeter. Too much practice maintaining a guise of false cheer. No, what Martin does is shrink. He hunches over imperceptibly and draws his arms into himself, and makes the space he’s in feel that little bit bigger, that little bit lonelier, for his diminished presence in it.
Resolve blooms on Martin’s face. It’s a fragile thing, Jon can tell, but it’s there. Jon hopes this is just one instance of many of Martin deciding to take up his due space and filling the world with his presence. “Would you start also using ‘they’ and ‘them’ for me sometimes?” Martin starts, in a rush. He continues, slower and more hesitant, “I just want to try them out; see how they feel and all that. Might not be a permanent thing.”
“It would be my utmost honor and pleasure to use whatever language my boyfriend feels most comfortable with me using for them.” Jon says primly, bent slightly at the waist and arms swept to one side.
In a second, Martin closes the distance between them, hooking one arm under Jon’s legs and behind his back and twirling him around, both of them giggling all the while. Jon gets the impression Martin’s taking it easy (in consideration of the abundance of fabric flowing free around their ankles, if he had to guess), but it’s perfect anyway.
For his part, Jon is taking this opportunity to admire his boyfriend between giggles: the sepia highlights in their hair, brought out by the (no doubt by now) sinking sun; the double chin Jon likes tucking his head under when he wants to feel at home; the strength in all of Martin’s body but especially their arms, arms that hold him close as they spin around the room, never showing signs of faltering. Mingling with admiration for Martin’s physical form is an enduring respect for Martin’s courage and his life-long compassion. This is a person Jon would trust with his life and his heart.
Eventually, Martin returns Jon to solid ground. Jon would say it was too soon, but they’re both slightly out of breath, and time is moving ever forward. Jon practically falls into Martin, pressing their foreheads together. The smooth chiffon slides against Jon’s skin as they shift into comfortable positions. He closes his eyes and isn’t aware of much else that isn’t Martin.
“Hey there, handsome,” Martin says after more time passes. “What’s someone like me got to do to get someone like you out that front door so we can actually go on our date sometime this century?”
Jon’s eyes crinkle in the corners, deeply amused. “You might have to carry me over the threshold at this point. Just make sure to grab our shoes—wouldn’t want leave without completing your ensemble, after all.”

-------
Jimin could only watch from afar as Jungkook and you danced around within the crowd of people. Usually he could be found in the middle, Jimin was known to be the life of the party after all. But, he couldn’t seem to enjoy himself, not while being sober anyway.
Downing the drink in his hand, he couldn’t help but wince a bit at the burning sensation as the liquid flowed down his throat. Slapping himself softly a few times he spoke to no one in particular, “Come on, Jimin, you got this. You’ve watched them love each other for years now, what’s one more night?”
Shaking his head to clear his mind, he pushed off the wall he was leaning against. He needed more alcohol if he wanted to survive the night without another heartbreak. Flinging the cup away nonchalantly, he strode towards the kitchen to grab another one.
Reaching the counter, he grabbed the strongest alcohol he could find and gulped down half the bottle at one go. Would he regret it in the morning? Most definitely. But, did he care now? Not a single bit.
“Oof, what’s got you drinking your life away?” he heard none other than Jungkook ask, seemingly appearing out of thin air beside him.
Choking on his drink, Jimin hit his chest as he placed the bottle down. Glaring at his smiling best friend, he grumbled, “Don’t scare me like that! I almost had a cardiac arrest, my good fellow.”
“My good fellow? Since when am I a ‘good fellow’?”
“You’re right. You almost gave me a heart attack, assbutt.”
Jungkook snorted, rolling his eyes as he grabbed two cups out of the stack, “Okay, Castiel. No need to get your panties in a twist now.”
“Bold of you to assume I’m wearing anything underneath.”
Wiggling his eyebrows suggestively, he bumped his shoulder with Jimin’s, “How sexy of you.”
Jimin shook his head, a small smile on his lips as he raised the bottle to his lips once again, “Very sexy of me indeed.”
“Alright alright. Stop moping about and drinking your life away and come join us! Y/N was asking where you were,” Jungkook revealed, “we need our third dumbass for the trio to be complete!”
Jimin slumped a little at the mention of you, before straightening up with his trademark flirtatious smirk. Thankful that the boy beside him didn’t notice - or if he did then didn’t comment -, “Aw, is this your way of inviting me to a threesome? Cause I’m in just so you know.”
Head thrown back in laughter, Jungkook’s shoulders shook, “Yeah dude, we’re gonna have such a sexy time fucking in a frat house.”
“Bet.”
With that, Jimin took one last swig from the bottle before starting towards the main room, “Time to get this party started.”
-------
Jimin woke up to a pounding head with a start, covering his eyes with a hand in a futile attempt to block out the sunlight, he groaned, “Why’d I drink so much last night. Fuck you past Jimin.”
Moving to get out of the bed, he stopped dead in his tracks when he felt something, or someone, wrapping their hand around his torso. Looking down, his eyes widened like saucers as he recognised none other than Kas cuddling up to his bare chest.
Scrambling to move away, Jimin fell off the bed with a squeak, successfully dragging the bed covers with him.
Jerking awake, Kas groaned about her lost sleep, looking over the side of the bed to the flabbergasted man on the ground.
“If I knew this was how you started the morning, I’d never say yes to sleeping with you,” she remarked in a gruff tone.
“You- I- We-” Jimin sputtered from his spot on the ground.
“You, I, We, yeah we fucked last night,” Kas said offhandedly, rolling back to burrow into her pillow to fall asleep once more.
Clambering up, Jimin looked around the room he was in, noting that it was indeed, not his - though it was a room he wasn’t a stranger to either -. It wasn’t a surprise to anyone that Jimin was, put in simple words; a fuck boy. He had slept with a majority of the uni population by now. So it was safe to say Kas’s room was nothing new to him - thanks to his previous rendezvous with her.
Though it was surprising that he was there at that moment, for he had stopped sleeping around as soon as he realised his feelings for you. Now, most people might do the opposite and excuse their actions with ‘I’m trying to get over them’ but Jimin couldn’t bring himself to do that. He didn’t find anyone else even remotely interesting enough to spend a night with besides you.
“Kas this-” Jimin started but the brunette was faster, waving her arm dismissively as she spoke, “It means nothing, I know. You’re too in love with your best friend, blah blah blah.”
“I’m sorry.”
Kas huffed out a laugh, rolling over to face him from the bed, “Why’re you sorry? It’s not like we have feelings for each other.” She continued as she rolled her eyes and smirked playfully, “besides, you’re not my type anyway. I’m more into guys like Namjoon.”
Body sagging in relief, Jimin could only chuckle along as he started gathering his clothes, “You know, I could always give you his number?”
“Then what? I call him and say ‘Hey, I got your number from Jimin after a one night stand. Let’s go on a date.’?”
“I mean, technically you could.”
A moment of silence passed as the two delved into a staring contest of sorts.
“Okay, so I’m gonna go now,” Jimin drawled out, getting dressed as he inched towards the exit, “I’ll text you hyung’s number later, by the way. Do whatever you wish to with that.”
“You’re such a shady fucker, Park,” Kas said jokingly, “how you befriended someone like Namjoon is beyond me.”
With a laugh he left, “See you around, Kas.”
-------
Jimin unlocked the front door of his apartment, not caring about the noise as he was certain that his roommate was out by now.
“Welcome back, man-whore,” Jungkook greeted from his spot on the couch, eyes glued to the TV screen in front of him.
Jimin’s body tensed instinctively, eyes widening in shock as he looked at his roommate playing video games, “What are you doing here?”
“I live here.”
“Yeah but what are you doing here now?”
“Playing video games.”
Jimin sighed exasperated, “Aren’t you usually with Y/N at this time?”
Jungkook mimicked the elder’s sigh to mock the older, “Yeah but she’s busy today.”
Processing the information, Jimin nodded his head, “I’m gonna go freshen up.”
“Alright.”
-------
Steam escaped the bathroom as Jimin stepped out, drying his hair with a towel as he walked to his room. Just as he entered, he heard his phone ringing. Looking around the place, he spotted his vibrating phone at the edge of the bed where he had thrown it before going into the shower.
Grabbing the phone, he picked up the call without checking the ID, “Can you please call back? I’m on the other line with my proctologist and he’s trying to explain to me why I have a perfect ass.”
“What the fuck did you just say?”
“Ah Jin-hyung! How are you?”
“None of that. First tell me what the fuck you just said.”
Jimin snickered, moving to sit on the bed, “Don’t worry about it. I usually start calls with the weirdest thing I can think of so if it’s a scam call, they leave me alone.”
“You know,” Jin started, “if you used even half the brain power you use on shit like this while studying, you’d be one of the smartest students in your university.”
“Where’s the fun in that though?” Jimin whined, falling back to lie down, “besides, I’m already one of the top students in our batch.”
“Overconfidence will take you nowhere Park Jimin,” Jin stated.
“Lies. You’re a world renowned model, are you not?”
“Aish, you’re such a brat.”
Giggling, Jimin switched his phone from one ear to the other, “Only for you. Now tell me how you’ve been! It’s been ages since we last spoke.”
-------
“Fuck! Taehyung focus!” Jungkook shouted into his mic as he killed another enemy, rushing to his friend’s dying avatar and quickly reviving him.
“Sorry, I was drinking some water real quick,” came Taehyung’s reply, “I thought that spot was safe for a quick sip.”
“You were literally hiding in a bush in an open field,” Jungkook deadpanned, throwing a grenade at the building he knew the enemy squad was hiding.
“Ooh nice one,” Taehyung said as the game announced that he had killed two players with the grenade.
“Taehyung-ah, only two more players left. If we lose then I’m gonna end you.”
-------
You hissed in pain as another rose thorn pricked one of your fingers, “I hate this so much.”
“Oh cheer up, Y/N. Gardening will never be fun if you’re such a grump!” your grandfather announced, plucking another rose and placing it in his basket.
“I wouldn’t even be here if I didn’t love you so much, grandpa.”
“I love you too, bubbles. Let’s go to that patch now! Be careful though, those have more thorns,” your grandfather beamed like a little kid on Christmas morning as he moved towards the white rose patch.
You could only groan as you dragged your feet to follow him, “Great, more thorns. Yay.”
-------
“Alright, five minutes break for getting water and shit,” Jungkook announced before taking his headphones off.
He stood up and stretched, feeling his joints crack as he did so. Looking at the clock, he realised that he had been playing for a few hours now.
“Damn I went so long without moving? No wonder I’m so thirsty.”
Jungkook rolled his neck, hearing some more bones cracking as he walked towards the kitchen to grab some quick snacks. Walking by Jimin’s room, he heard the older man talking to someone.
He was about to move on, having no interest in eavesdropping, when he thought he heard your name. Ignoring his brain that urged him not to listen, he moved closer to the closed door, trying to hear what was being said.
“I don’t know hyung…” he heard Jimin say, “you know how I feel about Y/N. I don’t think I can go on a date with someone else.”
His eyebrows furrowed as he listened. There was a pause, no doubt the person on the other line speaking before he heard Jimin speak again.
“I know I have to get over her, hyung. It’s just,” Jimin sighed, “it feels unfair for the other person, you know? Going on a date with them while I’m in love with Y/N and all.”
Jungkook’s eyes widened, he barely held a gasp in as he heard Jimin. He knew that Jimin used to have feelings for you when they were younger so he made sure to ask him before pursuing a relationship with you when he caught feelings for you too. He clearly remembered Jimin telling him that he no longer had feelings for you when Jungkook had confided to him about his growing affections for you.
Jungkook moved away from the door, shaking his head as he realised that the other man had lied back then. He had prioritised Jungkook over himself. Typical Jimin, he thought.
Not wanting to barge in on Jimin mid call, Jungkook decided that he would speak to him about it later on. With that noted in his mind, he continued his journey to the kitchen to get some snacks.
-------
Time flew by, days turned to weeks and weeks turned to months. Jungkook ended up never speaking to Jimin about his conversation, too swept up with university life and finals that came banging on the door.
It was during that time when Jungkook’s health started deteriorating. It started with him feeling nauseous even though he didn’t do or have anything that might have caused it, then came his loss of appetite.
Every time he would brush away your and Jimin’s concerned gaze, saying it was just him overexerting himself with all his extracurricular activities and studies. What worried you the most was when he started to drastically lose weight. The once muscular and energetic boy who loved playing outdoor games slowly turned into a sickly and frail boy who no longer had enough energy to move much without getting exhausted.
Jimin and you tried time and time again to get him to see a doctor and he time and time again waved away your concerns, always dismissing his decline in health with some sort of excuse.
The straw that broke the camel’s back was when one day he started to complain about severe back pain and difficulty breathing. You had called Jimin and the two of you rushed to the hospital with the barely conscious boy.
-------
It was a day like any other, Jimin woke up, got dressed, made some food for himself and his roommate. Checking on Jungkook in the other room as soon as he was done.
Holding the tray of food in one hand, he knocked on the open door to announce his presence, “Hey Kook. Got your breakfast, we’re having eggs and bacon today!”
Cracking one eye open, the younger man could only give a weak smile, “Morning, hyung.”
Moving to place the tray on the bedside table, Jimin helped him sit up - placing pillows behind him against the headboard so he could lean back and be comfortable as he ate.
“Where’s Y/N?” Jimin asked as he sat beside the bed, grabbing the food and starting to slowly feed the other. You decided to move in with them after Jungkook got diagnosed with the last stage of pancreatic cancer last year.
Chewing on the egg, Jungkook struggled to swallow before answering, “She went to the department store to grab some stuff.”
Nodding, Jimin fed him another bite, making sure that it was small enough for him to swallow without much struggle. The two continued in comfortable silence, only the scraping of the utensils against the plate and the distant chirping of birds from outside could be heard inside the room.
It was a beautiful day, so why did it feel as if something was wrong? Jimin could only wonder, his eyebrows furrowed in thought before he shook his head to get rid of the negative thoughts.
After making sure that Jungkook finished the whole meal and drank enough water, he placed the tray back on the bedside table. Jimin knew that the younger would want to read something to pass the time so he got up to grab a book from his shelf, eyes scanning all the spines before finally picking one he thought the other would enjoy.
Turning, he walked back towards Jungkook and handed him the book, moving to take the tray so he could clean up.
Before he could leave however, the younger man called his name. Turning to face him, Jimin raised an eyebrow in question, “What’s up?”
“I forgot to talk to you back then but,” Jungkook started, a coughing fit making him pause midway, “I heard you on the phone that day last year. The day after the party where you went home with Kas noona?”
Jimin’s posture straightened, his body tensing as he recalled that day. The only one he spoke to on call, as far as he could remember was Jin.
Clearing his throat, Jimin walked back to the bed, placing the tray back on the bedside table as he sat by him, “Oh? What about it?”
“I was walking by to grab some snacks when I heard you confessing your feelings for Y/N, hyung.”
It was like someone had just punched Jimin in the throat, a gasp leaving his plump lips as his eyes widened.
“Kook, I-”
“Don’t worry,” Jungkook smiled softly, “I know you wouldn’t ever try anything. I trust you.”
Jimin didn’t know what to say, opting to grab one of his hands and softly running his thumb over it, “Kook I’m trying to get over her, I swear I am. It’s just a little difficult when you’ve loved someone for years.”
Chuckling, Jungkook placed his other hand on top of Jimin’s, “It’s fine, I don’t blame you. She’s an amazing girl, hyung. Anyone would fall for her.”
The two share a silent moment, though it was a comfortable one. None of them felt the need to speak, just enjoying the little peaceful moment they were sharing.
Jimin felt the grip on his hand tightening, the other’s face turning into one that showed discomfort, “Hyung, I don’t feel so good.”
“What are you talking about? Let me call the ambulance!” Jimin exclaimed frantically, freeing his hand from the younger’s, rushing to go grab his phone from the other room.
Right as he was about to get up though, a hand grabbed a hold of his wrist. Halting him in his steps.
“Clam down, will you? I don’t want the last thing I see before dying is you panicking like a headless chicken.”
Swallowing back tears harshly, Jimin’s eyebrows creased in concern, “What are you talking about? How are you joking in a moment like this!”
Shaking his head, Jungkook smiled again, voice strained with the effort of him speaking through the pain and fatigue he felt, “No listen, it’s fine. Just make sure to take care of Y/N alright? She might act all tough but she’s as fragile as a flower.”
“Jungkook, please. Let me go get my phone so I can take you to the hospital,” Jimin begged, voice trembling as his eyes glazed over with unshed tears.
Ignoring his pleads, Jungkook continued with a laugh, “We always joked about how one day in the future we’d go to the moon together like in those movies. Guess that won’t be happening in this life, huh?”
“Fuck Kook, you can! Just let me get the damn phone!” Jimin almost screamed in frustration, rapidly blinking back his tears as his hands shook.
Meeting his eyes, Jungkook only continued smiling, a peaceful look overtaking his feature, “Take her to the moon for me, alright?”
It was getting harder to keep his eyes open, but this time he didn’t fight the numbness that took over him. In that moment Jungkook truly felt at peace, knowing that the two of the people he cared so much for would be alright. That they had each other when he wouldn’t be there.
-------
That was what you walked in on. The sight of your boyfriend lying on his bed, looking more at peace then you had seen him in the past year. You could almost smile at the seemingly happy moment but the sobbing man beside him indicated something was wrong. Something was very wrong.
“What’s going on? Why’re you crying Chimmy?” You asked cautiously, still standing at the door.
Jimin’s head snapped up, his blood shot tearful eyes locking with yours, “He’s gone.”
The grocery bags that you were holding a moment ago were on the ground, the sound of glass breaking heard from inside. “What do you mean he’s gone?” You asked, lips quivering as your voice trembled.
Getting up from his seat, Jimin walked towards you, pulling you into a crushing hug as you started weeping, “You’re lying! He can’t be gone, he can’t leave me!”
Jimin could only hold you tighter, caressing the back of your head as he shushed you gently, whispering an endless string of apologies even though he couldn’t stop crying himself.
“Please tell me this is some sort of a sick prank you two are pulling on me. Please tell me you’re joking and he’s alright,” you begged, weakly grabbing the collar of his shirt and tugging at it in desperation.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered again, kissing you on top of your head, “Let it out, I’m here for you, moonlight. Just like I promised.”

Virgil's Betrayal
Part 3 of New Big Brother
Previous Next
Summary: Remy meets Patton’s brother and kids and proceeds to get murdered.
Warnings: Food mention, play fighting including nerf guns, manipulation but for good stuff, let me know
Remy was not nervous.
When dad guy had asked him a few days ago if he would be ok with going to the man’s brother’s house for lunch that weekend, Remy had said, “Sure.” He’d agreed to it.
So no. Remy wasn’t nervous. Even as they pulled up to the frankly huge house in a neighborhood of huge houses.
 Definitely not nervous.
Virgil was practically vibrating in his seat. He’d been telling Remy all about his uncle and cousins, and what games they could play together the entire drive.
“Everybody ready?” Dad guy asked as he turned the car off.
“Yep!” Virgil told him as he quickly unbuckled himself.
Dad guy sent one of his questioning looks to Remy via the rear view mirror. Remy ignored it and climbed out of the car to follow Virgil who had already ran for the front door.
Dad guy joined them at the door as Virgil rang the bell. Remy wasn’t trying to hide behind them. They just ended up closer to the door. There was the sound of a lock being turned before someone inside the house hollered for them to come in.
As soon as they walked through the door there was the sound of footsteps running down the stairs.
"Virgil! Uncle Patton!” A pair of voices yelled before two young boys were launching themselves off the stairs towards them. Dad guy yelped in alarm as he attempted to… catch them?
“Jan, your boys are going to give me a heart attack one of these days!” The man yelled through his subdued laughter from his place on the ground.
“And I’ll help them get rid of the body.” The voice from before called. A moment later a short man appeared from what Remy assumed was the kitchen. He looked a lot like dad guy save for the fact he was definitely older than the man. And the mild scarring on the left side of his face.
“Alright boys, that’s enough abunculicide.” The man told the kids who were laughing in dad guy’s arms.
“Aw…” The pair said before releasing him.
Dad guy smiled before standing up and ruffling their hair causing one grin and the other to balk and try to fix it.
“You must be Remy.” The man said, “My name’s Janus, it’s nice to finally meet you.”
“Nice to meet you, sir.” Remy told him.
Mr. Janus smiled, “You can call me Janus.”
 Yeah that was not happening.
“The two terrors who ambushed you all are my sons Roman and Remus.”
“I’m Roman.” “And I’m Remus.” The two introduced with matching bows, “And together we’re-!” They spun in opposite directions before striking poses back to back, “-the creativitwins!”
Remy couldn’t help but laugh slightly at the theatrics as dad guy clapped excitedly, “Oh that was so cute!” Dad guy told them.
“No it wasn’t!” The pair told him pointedly, “It was cool.” Roman told him.
 “Yeah!” Remus agreed.
“Well whatever it was, I loved it.” Dad guy told them.
“Lunch will be ready in about a half hour,” Mr. Janus told them, “So you can all make yourselves at home.”
“Can we go outside?” Remus asked.
“Yes, but-” before the man could finish both boys took off running.
“Come on Virge!” One of them called.
The next thing Remy knew he was being grabbed by the hand and pulled towards the back yard, “Come on Remy!” Virgil told him.
 Guess he was going outside.
 ~
“-Don’t get too dirty.” Janus finished lamely as all the minors fled to the backyard, “Well I tried.”
Patton chuckled, “Probably should’ve started with that part.”
“How many sons did you want back alive?” He asked.
Patton laughed, “Come on, I’ll help make lunch.
 ~
Remy watched the younger kids from his seat on the porch steps. Roman suggested playing super hero’s and was met with agreements until he suggested Virgil be the villain. Which apparently happened a lot.
“Come on, Virgil.” Roman whined, “We need a bad guy!”
“But I always lose when I play the bad guy.” Virgil told them, “Why can’t you be the bad guy and we fight you?”
“Because me and Re are the heroes.” Roman said as if it were obvious.
“We could be bad guys.” Remus told him, “The bad guys are cooler anyway.”
“Noooo.” Roman told him, “We’re the creativitwins! We’re supposed to be the good guys!”
“But we’re always the good guys!” Remus replied.
“Remy!” Virgil called, “Tell them we wanna be the heroes!”
 “How about…”
 ~
Patton jumped when the mostly silent backyard suddenly erupted in gleeful screams.
“Welcome to the world of raising multiple children.” Janus told him.
Patton smacked his arm lightly before going to peek at the yard. The three younger boys were running around the yard at top speed as Remy made a grab for whoever got closest to him. Patton smiled as Roman yelled for a retreat before all three kids ran for the treehouse. Remy stalked after them, giving the twins enough time to make it to safety, but grabbed Virgil before he could climb high enough.
Virgil squealed as he was pulled away from the tree and yelled for help through his laughter.
Patton cooed at the sight before reluctantly going back to the kitchen.
 ~
Virgil laughed wildly even as Remy used him as a partially successful human shield. If he had known there were fully loaded nerf guns, Remy would’ve made it harder for them to get to the treehouse.
“Don’t worry Virge!” One of them yelled, “We’ll rescue you!”
“Dead or alive!” The other added.
Remy laughed, “It’s not a rescue if you kill him!” He told them as they continued to shoot.
“Silence feind!” The first one told him before firing more foam bullets at them.
"Any ideas?” Remy asked Virgil quietly.
“I think there’s more guns on the porch?” Virgil whispered back.
“Perfect.” Remy grinned, “Muwahaha! You can’t defeat me!” He told the pair in the treehouse before running towards the porch with Virgil.
Once there he put Virgil down and the kid directed him to where the extra nerf guns were. The ones in the hidden storage bin were much smaller than the ones the twins had.
“Virgil! You’re not supposed to help the bad guy!”
“Ha ha! I put him under mind control!” Remy told them, “Now I have a minion.”
Virgil snickered before rushing to grab a gun of his own.
“You won’t get away with this, villain!”
“Let him go or face our wrath!”
“Never!” Remy called back, “Pick up as many bullets as you can, but don’t shoot too much, ok?” He whispered to Virgil, “When they run out we can go after them, cool?”
“Yeah!” Virgil whispered excitedly.
It took longer than Remy thought it would for the rain of foam to slow to a stop. “It’s over, heroes. Surrender peacefully and I might spare you.” He told them.
He could hear hushed laugher from the treehouse before one of the boys replied, “Okaay~ just a minuute~”
 “Uh-oh.” Virgil said beside him.
 “Uh-oh?”
He didn’t have to wait long to figure out what the kids were up to because a second later he was being pelted with various balls, ranging from ping pong to tennis. Before he even had a chance to recover, one of the twins was suddenly right next to him and whacking him with a foam sword.
“What the- hey!” He laughed before trying to fend off the nine-year-old. While he was distracted, the other one had made their way to the ground as well and ambushed him from behind. “Oh shhh-!” He cut himself off as he fell.
The second kid had hit the back of his knees with a foam club. This was definitely not a fair fight.
While the twins were busy beating him to death he suddenly felt the familiar sensation of foam bullets.
“Wha-? Virgil! I thought you were on my side?” He asked incredulously, causing Virgil to laugh, “Betrayed by my own brainwashed minion!”
The kid just giggled harder, “I was just pretending to be mind controlled!” He told him as he continued to fire the toy gun.
The kids screamed in delight as they assaulted him with their various weapons. Remy was ready to admit defeat and call them off when a voice interrupted.
“Alright, boys, that’s enough.” Dad guy said.
‘Oh shit.’
 ~
Patton’s heart broke a little as the joy on Remy’s face quickly melted away to something much more subdued. He sent him what he hoped was a reassuring smile but it didn’t seem to help any. “Lunch is ready.” He told them.
“Okay.” the younger kids chorused before dropping their weapons and racing inside.
“Are you alright?” Patton asked, “They might be foam but they can still hurt when the boys get excited.”
“I’m fine.” Remy said casually as he stood up and brushed himself off.
“Alright then.” He smiled, “Then let’s go eat some pizza bread.”
 ~
"Pizza bread" as it turned out, was bread with cheese and pepperoni inside. So, more sophisticated than the rolled up pizza slice Remy had pictured. Apparently you were supposed to dip it in some fancy tomato sauce which is why Remy was surprised when Mr. Janus had them all move to the living room to eat.
"Dad, can we watch Avatar?" Roman asked.
"No, let's watch dirty jobs!" Remus told him.
 "How about mythbusters?" Roman countered.
"Ah, ah," Mr. Janus told them, "what's the rule for guests?"
"Virgil," They chorused, "wanna watch-" "Avatar?" "Dirty jobs?"
"Um… what about Most Extreme...?" Virgil tried.
 "Yes!"
 "No!"
"Two to one, we win!" Remus cheered.
"Boys." Mr. Janus told them, "We have more than one guest, remember?"
"Remy, say no!" Roman told him, "Then we pick a different show."
"I don't really have an opinion." Remy told him, "What's "Most Extreme"?"
"They take all the cool stuff from animals like eyes and teeth and show what it would look like if humans had the same ability." Remus told him, "It's neat!"
"Its freaky is what it is." Roman told him.
 "That's what makes it cool!"
"I'm gonna pass on the vote." Remy told them.
"He's impartial so we win! The Most Extreme it is!" Remus turned to high five Virgil.
Roman seemed a bit miffed at losing the vote, but it wasn't long before he was staring at the screen with as much interest as the other two. And honestly? Remy got it. The show was actually pretty cool.

Patton smiled as Remy seemed to settle in again and get pulled into the show. He waited until the episode ended and everyone was done eating before moving to collect the empty plates. Unfortunately, the action quickly caught the attention of the teen.
"Don’t worry, I got it." Patton assured as Remy moved to start cleaning up as well.
"It's ok," Remy told him, as he paused somewhat hesitantly, "I don't mind."
Patton smiled, "I appreciate it, but you don't have to. Janus and I are gonna clean up and then we'll probably be heading home."
"Oh," Janus said suddenly, "while I'm thinking about it, we packed up some of our old clothes to donate. You guys can look through them for some play clothes." He told him.
 "Sure." Patton told him.
"I'll be right back to help clean up." Janus said before leaving the room.

Remy wasn't sure why he was suddenly on edge. All he knew was something felt off and he didn't like it.
Mr. Janus came back a minute later with three large bags. "Ok," he said as he set them down, "look through and take anything." He told them before pointing to the twins, "No dress up this time." He told them.
"Why not?" Roman asked.
"Because yesterday we had to cut your brother out of a shirt you both knew was too small."
"I was a mutant giant what was I supposed to wear?" Remus asked indignantly.
 Remy bit back a smile.
"Preferably something big enough to get yourself out of." Mr. Janus told him.
 "Boring~" Remus drawled.
Mr. Janus shook his head fondly, "No dress up." He told them again before leaving to help dad guy.
The second he was gone the twins shared a look before quickly opening the bags and digging through them.
Remy laughed slightly, "Didn't he just say "no dress up"?"
"He said no dress up for us," Roman corrected, "but nothing about us dressing up you or Virgil."
"And so long as he doesn't catch us too quickly we can do it too!" Remus grinned.
Remy quickly turned down any attempts to get him to play dress up, and delegated himself to watching as the older boys coerced Virgil into trying on just about every piece of clothing. They had quickly moved on from the kids clothes that Virgil could feasibly fit in, or at least grow into soonish, to going through Mr. Janus’s old clothes just to wear them.
Virgil was digging through the bag when he suddenly gasped, "Remy!" He said excitedly before pulling something out of the bag and bouncing over, "Look!" He beamed as he held up an old leather jacket, "It's like from the store!"
 "Uh, yeah, kinda." Remy admitted.
"I don't remember that one." Roman told them, "It doesn't look like Dad or Noni's."
 "Dad!" Remus called.
"What happened?" Mr. Janus answered as he came around the corner before huffing a small laugh, "I see you ignored the dress up rule."
Remus ignored the last part, "Whose jacket is this?" He asked; pointing to the coat Virgil was holding.
Mr. Janus glanced at the jacket Virgil was holding, "That's my old one." He told them, "I haven't worn it since… probably since I was about twenty or so. That's when Noni gave me my other one."
"How long ago was that?" Virgil asked.
Mr. Janus laughed, "Long enough to know I don't need it, let's stick with that."
"That's Dad's way of saying he's old." Remus whispered causing Virgil to giggle.
"I heard that." Mr. Janus told them with an amused eyebrow raise, causing the kids to laugh. Mr. Janus shook his head, "Anyway, like I said you're welcome to anything in the bags." He said with a glance to Remy, "Try not to smother your cousin in the clothes." He told them offhandedly as he went back to the kitchen.
 Something was definitely going on.
"Try it on!" Virgil told Remy as he practically shoved the jacket at him.
"I don't know, kid." Remy told him. This whole thing felt like way too much of a coincidence. He wasn't sure how to feel about it. This had to be a set up, right?
 "Why not?" Virgil asked.
"I already have a coat, remember?"
"Yeah but this one doesn't cost money." Virgil told him. Dammit. "And at the store you said these were cool."
Stop making good points.
"Oh! It could be part of your villain outfit!" Roman exclaimed, "All super villains need to look cool."
"Otherwise they're just regular villains!" Remus added.
 "What's the difference?"
"Presentation!" All three told him.
Ok, well he definitely ran into something there.
"Pleeeease, Remy?" Virgil asked with wide eyes.
... Fucking puppy dog eyes.
 Remy sighed, "Ok, fine."
 ~
Patton peaked around the corner and smiled. For once he was glad Virgil had learned to weaponize his puppy eyes.
 ~
Remy made sure that when dad guy and Mr. Janus came back that he was not wearing the jacket. Just in case.
Thankfully neither mentioned it as they packed up the clothes Virgil. Or as they resorted the rest the kids had used for dress up. They all said their goodbyes, with Mr. Janus saying he hoped to see them again soon, and the twins telling Remy they wouldn't be going so easy on him next time.
If dad guy seemed extra smiley on the way home, it was none of Remy's business.
Remy was not smiling to himself either.
 …Whatever.
 ~~~~~notes~~~~~
 For anyone who was wondering, Virgil 100% knows what he's doing when it comes to puppy dog eyes. He was raised by Patton Can't-say-no-to-cute Sanders. And yes. He does use this for evil.
