If you've ever struggled with suicidal ideation, this has likely been a particularly difficult week. It certainly has been for me. I've lost a lot of trust in a lot of people. I hope this post doesn't make anyone lose trust in me.
You need to live. That means you, the person reading this post. I don't know your name or your situation but I know, with the same certainty that I know that the Earth is turning, that you need to live.
I know that it can be hard, crushingly hard. I know what it's like to feel so empty that getting out of bed seems impossible, or so overwhelmed that drastic action seems like the only way out.
It isn't. Death is not the answer. It sure as fuck isn't praxis. Please, please do not let anyone convince you otherwise. If you think that your death will have a net positive effect on the world, I promise you, as someone who has been there before, it won't.
And while I encourage you to do what you can to try and make the world a better place - donate to charity, pick up litter, volunteer your time, write your representatives, et cetera - I want to make it clear that those aren't requirements you need to meet to justify being alive. Your life has value, inherently.
Today things may be terrible. They may stay terrible for a while. But one day, a song will get stuck in your head that makes you feel something again. You'll meet a dog that loves you unconditionally. You'll eat a meal that tastes like it was cooked by an angel. You'll pick up a new hobby, perhaps without even realizing it, and it will bring you some sense of satisfaction. You'll watch a beautiful movie. You'll walk past a beautiful mural. Someone will compliment your outfit, someone will laugh at your joke, someone will tell you they're happy to spend time with you. One day you will wake up early enough to see the sun rise.
It's a cliche to say "it will get better". That's because it's true. It probably won't be a linear upward trend, rarely do things stay better forever, but there will come a time when you'll be glad you stayed alive. I promise.

TITLE: Venom Eater
Tumblr media
SUMMARY: Moving on proves its challenges. Not everyone has the ability to accept that what happened, happened - and what was, was. So as you try to lead a new life, single and trying to heal, the journey proves to be far from easy. It’s worse than difficult and more painful than what you could’ve imagined. The only comforting source is that what will be, will be. And there’s no changing that.

Venom Biter (Part 1) | MASTERLIST
A/N: the long-awaited part 2 to Venom Biter! This was originally meant to be longer but I decided that I wanted to flesh out the plot a little bit more so things will get worse and or better who knows…
There’s never a grey area about what people do after a terrible breakup. It’s always black and white. Whether someone cuts their hair, dyes it, alters their aesthetic, or goes on holiday to escape the reality.
The gym can make for the perfect best friend to subtly take revenge on someone a person once had.
But your new best friend was Tinder. A platform of opportunities to explore and select at your perusal. Providing you with gorgeous men who were looking to fuck and nothing more than that. If Tinder wasn’t the buzz for you that night, it would be going out with friends - friends that didn’t include ones that you made through Minho.
These ones’ you would only see about once every three months then band together again as if nothing has changed in the space between. It’s not awkward when you’re around them and so far, it has taken your mind off the past two months. Since then, your connection with Minho has been one of which where-
“God fuck I’m cumming!”
Minho knows he is too when his eyes screwed shut, laying back as he lets you use his cock, “shit, so am I,” he breathes out, watching you roll your hips in a frantic craze to get yourself over the edge. You miss this.
The way that you squeeze around him is the final straw that breaks the camel's back. Minho swears towards the ceiling, back arching as his dick glides in deeper. Within a couple of seconds, his vision flashes just as white as your insides that he fills.
The top half of your body flops forward onto his chest, spent from the past fifteen minutes that you’ve been riding him non-stop. Now it’s almost possible to hear the rapid thumping of his heartbeat that violently bashes from within. Not wanting to stay in that position for any longer, you peel yourself back, hopping off his body.
“I need you out by seven,” you declare, picking up his sweatpants and t-shirt from the floor and then throwing them right at him.
Minho grumbles but doesn’t flinch, “seven? Fucking hell.”
“Well, I have to go to work so you’re not staying.”
“I figured that,” he fusses before sitting up. “At least let me use your gym here.”
You pause for a second to look at him, wondering where he gets his audacity from sometimes, “fine.”
“Thank you,” he replies then starts donning his clothes as you make your way to the bathroom for a hot shower.
This is what it’s been like for a while now - a pernicious seesaw effect of meeting up with Minho, sleeping with him (usually in the mornings), and going about your day as if he wasn’t in your guts twenty minutes ago.
It’s always a good feeling in the moment but after, there’s a lingering icky weight that you’re tirelessly towing along with you wherever you go. You’re not sure if Minho feels the same because even though you’ve talked to him a few times, there’s no talk of each other's feelings anymore. It’s not that neither of you are ready for that looming and tender conversation. It’s just as if there’s no point.
By the time you were out of the shower, Minho was still on the edge of your bed, fully clothed and ready to leave.
“I’m not making you breakfast,” you say to him, wrapping the towel around your body a little tighter.
“Don’t worry, I wasn’t expecting you to,” he responds. “I need to talk to you about something.”
“Can it wait until the end of the day, because I need to get ready for work.”
He groans, getting fed up, “surely you can get ready and listen at the same time.”
You rustle through your drawers for a pair of underwear and bra, “to other people maybe.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“If you want to use the gym, go now,” you instruct sternly, hoping that he’ll just disappear.
When he detects that he can’t get through to you right now, he gives up. It’s too early to argue, so places his hand on the door handle, opening it for himself to leave and head down to the first floor, leaving you to prepare for another day’s work in peace.
After a quick breakfast, getting dressed and decent, you grab your bags and depart. On your way out, you spot Minho using the weights while you dart past the foyer, briefly thinking about how the time to cut him off is fast approaching.
You can’t keep doing this. There’s no way to move on if you’re both still latched onto each other's ankles like how kids are with their parents. That need for one another is still present.
“Who even am I when I’m not with you?” Minho asked you two weeks into sleeping with him again after breaking up. His comment sums up the reason of ‘why you decide to keep running back to each other’.
It’s not a hard statement to understand. You’ve been with Minho for a long time, you’re both still young and haven’t dated anyone else except between yourselves. It’s like being a dog that was never socialised as a puppy, unable to interact with others because it’s not sure how.
Suppose it’s the fear and anxiety that comes with separating from your favourite person.
The world and society have become scarier than it previously was and life is not as secure when you’re not with the person who can shield you from those things. There’s no comfort, only pure vulnerability, and what better way to feel protected than to return to a lover even when there’s nothing but a feeble spark that’s left over from what was once a blazing forest fire.
Seungmin challenges that particular view of yours at dinner with Felix as well after a long day at work. He wanted to see where you were coming from but also because he’s there to force feed you the icy, sobering truth when you don’t want to hear it.
“If there’s no romance, what’s the point of going back to each other?” he asks.
“They were dating for years Seungmin, you don’t just get over someone that quickly,” Felix responds instead like he was the one being offended.
Dissimilar to Seungmin, Lix will let you down gently and is afraid to hurt you with the sharp use of words that can be sometimes.
“Supposedly,” you mutter to yourself knowing full well how fast it was for Minho to just go ahead and fuck someone else after you had broken up.
“Do you still love him?” Seungmin questions swiftly.
“No,” you respond promptly.
“If there was an opportunity to get back together with him, would you go for it?”
“No,” you answer again. “I couldn’t.”
Felix blinks, not expecting that answer, “well…then…”
“Then stop seeing him if you know what’s good for you,” Seungmin continues. “Those icky feelings that you get after sleeping with him - not good. That’s the regret you’re experiencing and it’ll never feel any better.”
There’s no crack or fault in his advice. Had you not dished out the truth about the details of your messy breakup before and after, you would’ve still been glued to the same spot. It’s important to have someone humble you, and there’s no better person to do that than Seungmin.
“Just keep thinking about it, okay? On another note, Hyunjin’s coming back from France next week so we’re having a dinner and drinks,” Seungmin mentions.
Your mind briefly departs from the subject of your ex, “is he? Has it really been that long?”
“Yeah,” Felix replies, also surprised. “You’re coming right? We’re going to have a few drinks too, and catch up.”
“What time?” You ask.
“Around six,” Seungmin answers. “Does Minho know?”
“Not that I’m aware of,” you shrug, the thought of him returning to your mind once again. “I don’t know if he’d have any interest in going since they’re not friends anymore.”
Felix recalls that factor, “that’s right. But, if the rest of us are going to be there, we should invite him too, no? Unless it’s too difficult for y-”
“It won’t be difficult,” you reply, punctuating the rest of Felix’s sentence a little too quickly. “He and I can get along for about…ten minutes before things go sour. Plus, I don’t mind not going if he wants to. I can always catch up with Hyunjin another day.”
“You’re our friend too, remember? Don’t let your asshole of an ex-boyfriend stop you from seeing us. You broke up with him, not us,” Seungmin sends you a powerful reminder. “I’ll have a chat with him so that you don’t have to.”
He has a full understanding that if you and Minho were to attempt another civil conversation, it’ll go haywire and lead to more regret that you don’t need to be feeling right now. It just goes to prove that he’s beyond correct to even assume that fact.
The minute you both try to convey how or what it is that you’re both feeling, tensions boil over. For some reason that tension is only resolved by being bent over the nearest surface and fucking it out together.
It’s not healthy.
You go to remind Minho of what he did to you which he hates hearing, not because he denies it but because he does truly feel guilty. His only saving grace to that argument was that you had both technically broken up, meaning there were no ties to one another afterwards. Still, he missed the point of the fact that he hurt you as a result of those actions. It was too fresh to have done that to you.
Even when he recognised that factor, it was hard for him to accept that he actually caused you some form of irreversible emotional harm
However, Seungmin was right in the fact that you broke up with Minho and not your friend which enabled you to leave that dinner feeling a bit better and with a clearer judgement about going forward with a decision to cut all ties with Minho. It wasn’t something to look forward to.
But what was, is the dinner in the upcoming week. It’s the prime opportunity to see everyone again for the first time in over a month.
Despite your collection of text messages and calls from the likes of Chan, Jisung, Changbin and others, it was hard to associate yourselves with them in fear that all they’ll do is unintentionally remind you of Minho. It was the same way he felt when he was clearing out his house - not wanting to be around anyone or anything that would refresh his memory of you.
Now, all you want to do is move on.
Work had a helping hand in that process. Having been so busy with things piling up, your mind was free from Minho during the day. You were able to focus on tasks instead of wallowing and thinking about whether or not to give him a second chance
If it weren’t for Seungmin texting you the details of the upcoming dinner, work-life would’ve swallowed you up whole and made you forget.
From Minnie: 6 pm we’re meeting up, Also, just a heads up, Minho said he’s coming. Take it with a grain of salt though bc he might change his mind.
To Minnie: Thank you :)
You inhale a breath of fresh air. Going to this dinner was necessary whether it was going to be difficult or not. The presence of Minho wasn’t going to stop you from seeing your friends, and with that, you decide to get ready and head straight to the venue.
The restaurant has a separate open area for functions and tables people can book out. The dim golden lighting brings a warm and cosy vibe to the venue, coupled with a beautiful earthy aroma from reed diffusers distributed around the place and the smell of promised good food. It’s a relatively fancy setting, but not to a degree where you would be denied entry if you didn’t meet a dress code.
As you walk further down, you can already see Chan and Jisung chatting up a storm in the corner while they wait for the others. It’s a relief that not many people have made it so far in order to keep as low of a profile as possible and to not draw attention to yourself. However, little by little, they will definitely notice you’re there.
Jisung is the first to spot you, his jaw becomes unhinged as he drags himself out of the booth, speeds over with his face lit up, and throws his arms around you in a bone crushing hug. He nearly squeezes and shifts all of your organs out of place.
“Do you know how much I’ve missed you?” he exclaims loudly in your ear.
Chan laughs in the distance at his best friend's behaviour, “let her breathe Jisung.”
He releases your body for a rush of oxygen to surge back to your brain, “sorry, I just can’t help the fact that I haven’t seen you in a month!”
“You Facetimed me Jisung,” reminding him of that one and only time you accepted him reaching out to you to see if you were okay.
That’s completely different, anyway sit down,” he offers. “I’ll get you a drink.”
Without wanting to hear any protest from you, Jisung darts off to the bar nearby, ordering a beverage or two. Chan then waves out, ushering you to come and sit before you walk towards the booth.
“If I had gone another week without seeing you, I’d probably start to forget what you look like,” Chan jokes, patting his hand down on the space of cushion beside him for you to sit.
“That wouldn’t be such a bad thing,” you respond.
The second you’re seated, you can already feel Chan’s mind trying to intrude yours. There’s no point in lying to him when he’s akin to one of those Occlumens from Harry Potter, an all knowing person who can hear every one of your thoughts at will. Regardless of the fact that he’s not, it’s his parental nature which exudes that.
“Going okay?” He asks you.
You take a deep breath in and sigh out, “I could be worse.”
“You’re still here though,” he responds wisely. “And so are we.”
Chan never wanted to ask why you never told them or came to them when you first broke up with Minho. They all had to find out through one another then needed to text or ring you to confirm that it was actually real. However, they all knew that you must’ve had your reasons. Naturally, it would’ve been tough to accept let alone leaning on your close friends for support.
“Thank you,” you respond.
“Here we go,” Jisung calls out, carefully returning with two different types of cocktails. “They’re both strong as hell so don’t try to choose.”
“Not that you’d have it any other way right?” you reply, helping him with the glasses as he sits down beside you.
He pats your head as he goes to sit down and slings his arm around your shoulder, “you know me too well. Anyway, Changbin and Hyunjin are here. He just texted me before.”
Chan sulks, “what? No! he was supposed to wait until everyone else was here.”
“To be fair, they were meant to be here twenty minutes ago so Changbin is actually on time,” Jisung responds. “Anyway, how are you missy?”
“Better now that I’m with you guys,” you answer, giving him a bit of a friendly nudge before leaning into him.
Jisung grins, genuinely relieved on the inside to hear that you are. Not that you have been able to notice, but they were all worried for you at one point. The lack of information regarding your whereabouts or even the state of your well-being was concerning. It was almost like you had dropped off the face of the earth at one point, right up until you finally made the decision to start accepting people trying to contact you.
Unfortunately for your friends, they had to learn about what you were up to through Minho, and even today, you’re not sure if what he said to them was the truth. Nonetheless, they all knew at the end of the day, if they were ever unsure or suspicious of what he was feeding to them, they were mature enough to come to you to double check. If they were able to get through to you.
“Good. Now come back and hang out with me because these guys are boring.”
Chan goes to lift a finger and point across at Jisung to object his statement before Changbin rounds the corner with Hyunjin trailing at his side.
The last you saw him was some five years ago, just before he went away to an arts’ school in France to study. Now he returns taller with much more cut and distinct features and a head of light brown hair that’s visibly eclipsed his natural jet-black colour. Despite that, he also seems softer or shy when he gives everyone at the table a half smile.
“Who’d you say was boring?” Changbin prods into the conversation.
Jisung points up with his beverage in hand, “you and Hyunjin!”
Hyunjin’s eyebrows knit together with worry, “is he drunk already?”
A bright smile fashions on Changbin’s face when he notices you, “Y//N! Now it’s two welcome home parties!”
Hyunjin turns to look down at you in surprise, “have you been away as well?”
His question serves as a reminder that he has been relatively out of the loop since he’s been gone – not that you expected him to be fully aware of everything since he probably had better things to do. Hyunjin was still active in the group chat, but none of you prefer to communicate that way when hanging out is the better option. Whilst he’s missed out on a lot of stuff that’s happened, he hasn’t been so oblivious to other things.
“Not exactly,” you respond awkwardly. “But welcome back by the way.”
He smiles softly, “thank you.”
The get-together officially kicked off when Jeongin, Seungmin, and Felix arrived just before the second round of drinks was ordered. Everyone was happy to have Hyunjin back. Even for you, it was nice to see him again after so long – it was nice to see everyone in general. The setting was reminiscent of old times when everyone banded together. Whether it was at karaoke, dinner, a bar, someone’s house, or at some event, it’s always a good feeling when you’re around them.
It leads you to feel slightly upset that you haven’t seen them in so long. You’ve missed hearing their laughs, their jokes, and the safety that you feel too. But for a very painfully obvious reason, none of it seems to be the same without Minho.
“Didn’t show up did he?” Seungmin, who had been chatting up a storm with someone at the bar, walks over and takes a seat opposite you at the cornered booth. Just about all of them were alternating from the table to the bar, and a space they’d found to stand up to talk, or in Jisung’s case, dance by himself.
“Mm,” you mumble. “Which I’m sure is a good thing.”
He shrugs carelessly but with a small grin, “for your benefit. Not that I’m an expert in relationship problems but I can speak from personal experience.”
“That’s true,” you respond, remembering that he has in fact had his heart broken a few times by the same person.
Luckily for him, he’s ceased the chase and gave an account the other day at dinner of how freeing it was to be his own individual. It’s something you can only hope to achieve at this point – to be liberated from that sticky dependency you have on Minho.
It’s not love that you feel for him anymore, you’re sure of it. But it’s similar to a violent craving. His skin, voice – oh his voice. Everything about his body has you itching under the surface to have him by your side even though things end in a fiery argument, which is usually how it goes.
It wasn’t love anymore. It was dependency. A type of separation anxiety that fills you up with this icy cold feeling that won’t go away until you specifically have Minho near you. Still, deep down, you knew you didn’t love him anymore.
“Is Jisung okay?” Hyunjin ticks his head towards his friends’ direction.
Judging by the fact that Chan was holding a barely conscious Jisung up was a clear indicator that he definitely wasn’t okay. Never has he been able to handle his alcohol well and it was evident by the lack of control over his own body.
Seungmin looks over concernedly then looks down at his phone to check the time, “shit, I have to take him home too.”
He abandons you briefly to help out Chan. Both of them collectively agree that Jisung needs to go home or at the very least be removed from the bar to sober up. They take him to an empty table nearby and ask the bartender for some water. Meanwhile, Hyunjin turns a blind eye to the chaos and talks to you instead.
“How have you been Y/N?” He asks.
“Yeah, good. You? How was France?”
By the look on his face, it was as if your question brought back a whole heap of good memories to the forefront of his mind, “I couldn’t have asked for a better experience.”
“That’s good to hear,” you reply. “So have you graduated already?”
“Three months from now I will be,” he answers. “Why? You wanna come watch me walk across the stage over there?”
You consider his offer, “what if I said ‘yes’ to that?”
“Then I’d be over the moon,” Hyunjin emphasises then offers a brilliant suggestion that springs into his mind. “In turn, maybe I can show you around France and all the places I went to.”
“Is that a deal then?”
“Sounds like a solid deal to me,” he responds and whether he was joking or not, either way, it seemed a pleasant idea.
During the last hour of the dinner, you spent having an in-depth conversation with Hyunjin. From what he got up to in France, what he wants to do in the future, then covered what you’ve been doing as well
The topic of your ex-boyfriend was difficult to navigate, but you managed it well by diverting to another subject. The last thing you wanted to talk about was Minho for fear that the more you think about him, the more you’d want him.
Then again, you’re reminded once more of the fact that Hyunjin and Minho aren’t friends. He may not have any interest in him whatsoever. But it’s not like they left each other on horrendous terms. Not like how you and Minho did. Plus, it’s hard to see this fresh shade of Hyunjin in front of you, hating anyone he doesn’t like or doesn’t know.
The Hyunjin from five years ago would’ve held a grudge, but now you can see by his shift in personality, that he’s let it go.
When it came down to having to leave, everyone seemed to have their own plans. Seungmin would have the misfortune of taking care of Jisung. Felix, Jeongin, Hyunjin, and Changbin decided to go bar hopping while they were still stable on their feet and even encouraged you to come with them. It took a lot of convincing to tell them ‘no’ after you were set on heading home to the comfort of your own space.
Seungmin assured Chan that he was fine to handle Jisung, then thought it would be a polite gesture to accompany your side when you decided to walk home, regardless if it was only a minute's commute from the restaurant.
“How are you holding up?” Chan addresses the elephant in the room.
His question could be seen a mile away. It made you wonder if that was the reason he chose to walk you home since his place is in the opposite direction. Although he wasn’t confronting you, that’s exactly what it felt like.
“Somewhat okay, I suppose,” you answer.
“No, how are you really? We see Minho all the time. In fact, he won’t leave us alone. But we haven’t seen you,” he responds. “You can still hang out with us you know?”
“I know that,” you almost whine, especially after offering your ear to Jisung just for him to repeat the same words for over two hours. “I’ve been busy.”
“I guess being busy is a positive.”
“It’s when there’s nothing to do or I don’t feel good and I don’t have anyone around,” you respond and both come to a halt when you reach the entrance to your apartment building. “That’s the hardest.”
“That’s when you call us,” Chan says strictly. “I know you know this too, but all of us would drop whatever it is that we’re doing to come and help you. Not just Minho, even though I had some reservations about seeing him after what he did.”
The last parts of his words surprised you. Chan actually thought about cutting Minho off too when he found out what happened…
“So he did tell you everything.”
“Everything,” he confirms. “Including everything that you’ve both been up to now. Like how you still see each other now and then – and not for the reasons I had hoped. So why do you keep seeing him when you want to move on?”
Your eyes narrow at him, “how do you even know that I want to move on?”
“The fact that you still sleep with him but won’t pursue any sort of communication to get back with him romantically, says a lot Y/N. And I know that because he’s told me,” Chan answers bitterly, but not in a nasty way. “Your body might miss him, but I know your mind doesn’t.”
He’s bitten through the truth which you can’t seem to, his elderly brother-type personality forces you to see reason. You’d be offended if Minho tried to initiate a conversation about wanting to get back together, knowing that he’s not in any position to be making requests after what he did.
“Why are you telling me all of this?” You ask tiredly.
“I want what’s best for you,” he says. “Yes, Minho too in some way, but I told him he needed to figure out what he did on his own because I can’t help him with that. That’s his punishment.”
You supress a laugh, “thank you.”
Your short talk with Chan made you realise how empty your cup had been since you last saw him – since you last saw all of your friends under one roof. It was rewarding and it felt like home to be near them. However, his words weren’t there for you to just defer from. You had to listen to him. He was right in saying that your body misses Minho but your mind doesn’t because the next time he came around, you swore to yourself that it was going to be the last time you saw him.
But it needed a conversation, one that you weren’t even sure if you were ready to have, too scared to rip that band aid off.
As you don your bra back on and shimmy on your underwear that Minho almost tore off, you think of all the possible ways to approach this situation, bearing in mind that it does have the potential to blow up.
“W-We need to talk,” you stammer, wondering if that’s a good way to start. It’s a start, that’s all that matters.
Minho stares at you from the other side of your bed, halfway through putting on his t-shirt, “okay, what about?”
Without any warning, you blurted out what needed to - what must be said, “we should stop seeing each other.”
Heavy silence drapes over the room, except for the cogs working overtime in Minho’s brain, trying to decode your words could almost be heard. You can most definitely see it on his deadpan face. It illuminates the seriousness of the situation compared to what it was five minutes ago.
“Can you give me some more detail about that?” He requests.
“I just don’t think it’s healthy that we continue to sleep with each other when we’re not going to get back together,” you inform him.
“You don’t want to get back together?” Minho poses the long awaited question that hurts to even conjure an answer.
“Be honest, we’d be together right now if you knew that I was serious about it,” you say truthfully. “I’ll never not love you, but I can’t love you in the way that I used to.”
The sheer surprise of the conversation made Minho realise that he’s been consuming too much of a good thing. That he actually wasn’t prepared to talk to you about this. It’s been creeping around the back of his mind since you both started seeing each other casually but ignored it so as to spend as much time with you as he could even though you weren’t with him anymore.
“Right.”
“Look, just…don’t go cold on me, because I do want to talk to you about these things,” you plead with him.
“Such as?”
“Such as our friends,” you start off. “All of us hang out a lot, but I didn’t want our…breakup to stop either one of us from seeing them. They’re your friends and mine too. I’d hate for us to be driven away from them because we can’t coexist anymore.”
“Fair enough.”
You can sense that he’s already starting to shut down. An obvious coping mechanism that’s triggered by something he wasn’t prepared to hear. But while the final shreds of his rationality are still with you in the room, you make haste, and dish out the important points he needs to know.
“We might not ever be friends again even though that’s not what I’m hoping for-“
Minho stands up from the edge of your bed, cutting the rest of your sentence off in the process, “if you’re serious about everything that you just said, then I don’t want to see you text or call me first asking me to come over. This isn’t a one-sided deal that only applies to me, you have to stick to it as well.”
“This isn’t even a deal Minho. I am telling you not to.”
“What? Telling me ‘not to’ because you can’t control yourself around me? Fine. I don’t know if you realise this, but the majority of the texts between the both of us, are mainly sent from you - you asking for me, telling me how lonely you are, or how much you miss my body. So don’t start handing out instructions when you’re not going to adhere to them as well.”
There’s a viper-like sting to his words that keeps piercing your resolve. A truthful sting that seeps poison into your blood, making you feel sick and cold. He’s torn you off your high horse for a moment, bringing you back down to earth to realise that it’s not just him who needs to see reason as well.
He had a very strong argument.
Minho sighs and tails more information to his tangent, “look I will do whatever it is that you want me to do. But, if this is what you want, then you can’t deny that it will only work one way.”
There’s an efflorescence of achiness in your chest. A familiar one that you felt in the early days after breaking up with Minho. It was the same one you would feel whenever you’d have to lock the door to the spare bedroom in his house whenever he bought someone else over.
Heartbreak.
It lingers when he finally leaves with the promise of never reaching out to you again, at least for sex because there was no way of avoiding him in the future. That fact was impossible to refute. But this is what breakups consist of. Not one hairline shy off of being messy. It could, though, be much worse. That’s as much you had to be grateful for when you have to start from square one all over again.
Changing things up was necessary. You had already moved out from Minho’s, which there was no choice behind, but that meant new scenery. Different places to peruse in your own time that you hadn’t yet ever since you had moved out
It opened up new opportunities to visit some local things, especially on your way back home from work as you decide to call into a small cafe.
Soft bossa nova plays calmly in the background as you stand and deliberate on something sweet to take home with you for after dinner. If it weren’t for the many niche options to select from, you would’ve almost missed the voice talking from beside you.
“I heard the matcha bread is nice here.”
Your surprise gets the better of you, almost forgetting how to speak for a split second when you see a familiar tall figure you met once more from the other week.
“Hyunjin?”
“Hey,” he smiles. “Wanna sit down together?”
You end up ordering yourself a warm drink and a sweet pastry to go while Hyunjin found a small table right in the crook of the cafe. His sudden appearance was rather pleasant, allowing you to divert from your own thoughts for a bit. Plus, it’s always nice to sit and chat with a friend.
“I thought you might’ve been here to meet up with one of the others,” you say to him.
Hyunjin nods, putting his coffee down, “I just spent the last couple of hours helping Changbin buy clothes just down the road at one of the shopping centres, so that’s where I came from.”
You smile, “well he trusts you more than the others in that department.”
“As he should,” Hyunjin grins softly. “How are you?”
“I’m well, I just finished work and was heading home,” you respond.
“I’m not keeping you from going am I?” He asks politely.
“No, not at all,” You quickly exclaim. “The longer I stay, the more of an excuse I have not to do the mountain of things I need to for work.”
Hyunjin chuckles, “well, as long as it doesn’t get you into trouble with your colleagues.”
“I should be fine,” you hope.
“You know, when I think about it, you and I never really spoke that much back then,” he points out. “I only just realised that from last week when I saw you again.”
His comment makes you think back too
Hyunjin was definitely part of your friend group, but not one who you would hang out with individually or with another person. He was just there, almost like he was known to you by association. Aside from the fact that he’s well-mannered and kind, the only aspect of his personality that seemed to have changed is how boisterous he used to be.
Although, that’s to be expected when people mature and cross the bridge from adolescence to adulthood.
“True enough,” you reply and start snickering when you remember something funny. “But I have good memories of you though. Like when you threw that bottle at Jisung.”
Hyunjin’s eyes nearly pop out of his head, “I remember that. I could’ve killed him with that too.”
“Or when Chan had to pull you up from the train tracks because you fell off the platform and got stuck,” you add on.
“Most of those memories seem to have some type of mortal peril attached to it,” Hyunjin discovers.
“You were young,” you remind him tenderly. “They make for the best memories anyway.”
He agrees, staring into a space on the table as he reminisces, “true. So much has changed since I got back. I feel like I’ve missed out on growing up with you all even though we were just teenagers back then and adults now.”
“Maybe, but we’re still young though and some have more growing up to do than others,” you hint very cryptically at one person who automatically springs to mind. “So don’t feel sad that you’ve missed out when there’s still a lot for us out there.”
Hyunjin sits a bit more comfortably knowing that. As you both continue to talk, he realises how much you’ve changed yet somehow remained the same. You grew into your features, enhancing what was already there to a finer degree. Your looks were Hyunjin’s first impression of you when you first met as devious young teenagers.
That was before he discovered that you are as kind and cool as you come across. But you were just distant friends back then. Now, Hyunjin detected a space for that to potentially change. He wanted to get to know the friend he hung out with here and there.
Even though time threatened to cut the starting opportunity short, it was still a start nonetheless, and Hyunjin was confident that there would be other times to arrive as well. So as the baristas begin cleaning up behind the counter and around the cafe, both you and Hyunjin took it as a sign that it was probably time to head off. You both take your belongings, thank the staff on your way out and head into the night.
“Y/N,” Hyunjin says to you. “We should get coffee again sometime.”
You nod, “I’d love that. I still have your number.”
“So do I,” he replies. “What way are you heading?”
“I’m just literally around the corner, not even a minute away,” you answer.
“Okay, I’ll look forward to your text then,” he says.

Tumblr media
Summary: In which Mat Barzal inadvertently falls for the oldest Hughes sibling and her brothers aren’t happy.

Mat would be lying if he said he didn’t sneak glances at the announcers box after meeting you. You had been carrying a plate of food and two margaritas to your booth where your friends sat. Tito had made a joke about you seeming familiar then the pair heard your voice and knew, “Alright now, eat up because y’all are bumming me out.” Mat’s jaw slacked, “He’d known that the Islanders had gotten a new game announcer who was a girl but he wouldn’t have known it was you. You were effortlessly stunning, you had captivated the attention of every straight man in the bar. Mat had approached you as you sat at the bar, “I’m Mat, can I buy you a drink?”
You grinned and spoke, southern accent slipping out, “I’m Y/N, I mean Barzy after the way you played last game? You better buy me a drink. ‘Yknow how many hate comments my broadcast got?” Mat grinned as the bartender approached you, “Another Corona Light and whatever she’s having on me.” You grinned sheepishly, “I’m fucking with you. I’ve heard worse.” Mat grinned, “So now would probably be a shitty time to ask you out?” You smiled at him, “Maybe not.” Mat smiled, “If I may, your not from New York are you? Where are you from?” You grinned, “I grew up in Toronto with my 3 younger brothers and moved to Alabama for college and been in New York for a few months now.” Mat grinned, “Well welcome to New York beautiful.” That was a year and a half ago. You still hadn’t told your brothers who your boyfriend was, just that his name was Mathew. Until your album release came creeping in and you wanted to go public with Mat.

✧. - ̗̀ WHEN YOU TOLD HIM THE NEWS . . .
I think when you had to tell Nathaniel the big news, you would have been nervous. And not because you thought he would take it badly. I think that although Nathaniel has changed a lot over the years, mainly since what happened with his father, which I also think influences a lot, his desire to start a family as the independent adult that he is now would have constantly been a topic that you two would have mentioned a lot in your relationship.
The way you told him was probably much simpler than you might have imagined, but you were so wrapped up in your worries that you couldn't think of a creative way to do it. You just nedeed to get it out of your head. Hiding it would only make it worse. So you decided to break the news to him the same day you found about it.
It was late, almost dawn when you heard Nathaniel announce his arrival at the house. His guard shift had extended longer than he expected, but even so, he always knew that you were waiting for him (probably awake), so he didn't worry about making noise.
Seeing you appear, he couldn't help but smile widely. "I couldn't wait to get home." His words made you smile and Nathaniel rushed to welcome you into his arms, inhaling your scent with his head on your neck. The silence was loud at the moment, and before you could think...
"I'm pregnant." You felt his body tense violently against yours, and you immediately regretted not having waited for a better moment. But now all that was left was to wait for his reaction.
Carefully, Nathaniel pulled away a little to look at you, worse still holding you in his arms. You felt your heart pound against your chest, your entire body weakened and you felt like you were about to cry. His face was particularly neutral, although surprise was evident in his eyes. Nathaniel stayed for a few seconds contemplating the situation, a million thoughts running through his head.
And as you were about to speak again, a little scream escaped you as Nathaniel lifted you into the air, doing a small spin before lowering you down and attacking your lips soothingly. He held your face, and tangled his hands in your hair. The energy in the kiss unsettled you, but you held back.
"I thought…" Your voice sounded strangled, you breathed heavily in the middle of the kiss. "I didn't know you'd think.." You confessed, the feeling of relief calming you and you felt a smile escape as you saw tears sweeling in his eyes that he somehow managed to stop from falling.
"My love.." Nathaniel managed to say before he started laughing and smiling so much that he looked like a little child receiving a candy. "This is the best news I've ever received in my life, y/n" He murmured, pressing his forehead to yours. He sound so sure you couldn´t help but hold him tighter.
"But…your job.." You whispered.
"Don't think about any of that, we'll fix it. We'll find a way." Nathaniel interrupted you to reassure you. "Everything will be okay. I'm here."
And with that, you knew that, indeed, it would be.
✧. - ̗̀ HOW DID HE TOOK CARE OF YOU? . . .
I think everything about pregnancy would be a complete challenge for him. Not only because his job rarely allowed him to stay with you as long as he would have wanted, but because he didn't want to miss absolutely ANYTHING.
He always does his best to share the little moments with you. Since he found out, he loves sleeping with his head on your belly, he feels that in some way he protects the baby. And everytime he feels his little kicks, his whole heart melts instantly.
Every time you decide to do something that he considers dangerous, he goes into POLICE MODE, immediately. He starts reproaching you about why you should be resting and starts giving you orders, which at a certain point ends up bothering you. He always ends up apologizing, but you know he's just scared and you appreciate that he cares so much.
Also, I have the thought that many times you found him crying, and whenever you asked, he told you it was because he was afraid. (Have to add that Nath, always knows how to communicate with you, something you´re alway glad for and that he learned to you while he started giving you all his trust.)
Rather, he was worried. His worst terror was becoming a bad father. You knew that although years had passed since the incident with his family, it is the type of wound that never heals. So although Nathaniel would never have worried about that but, now that he had the responsibility of raising a baby, it was the only thing that came to his mind.
But Nathaniel is so in love with you, he knew that as long as you were there everything would be fine. So you always know how to calm him down when his anxiety starts to eat away at him. And he will always be grateful for that, and of course for everything you always do for him.
Another thing is that I feel that since he almost never had time to stay at home so much, he didn't really know how to do certain chores (I mean, he knew, he just wasn´t too experienced about it.)
But now that he basically forced you to stay in bed resting, he was forced to learn to make simple dishes, clean from time to time and keep everything in order.
On the other hand, getting up at such late hours of the morning to indulge in those strange cravings that you had in the middle of the night became routine.
And as expected, it didn't really supposed a problem, Nathaniel was already used to being awake at that hour on patrol.
I think a moment that stands out was when they told Amber, who immediately started crying and asking so many questions that Nath had to tell her to calm down so as not to overwhelm her. While everything was happening, you couldn't stop thinking about how things changed.
In high school, you were convinced that you and Amber would hate each other forever. Just like Nath, who thought he would have to deal with constant tension between you.
But there he was, watching how his little sister couldn't stop caressing your belly, while smiling and crying at the same time. He thought it was adorable. And trust me, Amber is definitely going to be the fun chick.
He was there for you, (obviously your friends too) throughout the entire pregnancy, and mainly giving things away. There came a point where you had to ask her to stop spending so much on you, because every time she came to visit you (which was quite often) she brought a present with her.
I knew she would love him the day I met him, and you couldn't be happier about it.
THE DAY YOU HAD THE FIRST ULTRASOUND, THE DOCTORS HAD TO TAKE NATH OUT OF THE ROOM BECAUSE HE COULD NOT HOLD HIS TEARS. The doctors told him that he couldn't cause such a disturbance, since it should be a calm moment for both of you, but he couldn't help but burst into tears when he saw his baby on the screen. After calming down , they let him back in. You just laughed at the situation, such a cry baby really 🙄. And in general, pregnancy was a complicated process for both of us, but Nathaniel always made sure to be there to help you with whatever you needed at all times. (AS HE SHOULD, dont expect less!)
✧. - ̗̀ GENDER REVEAL . . .
I don't think Nathaniel is the type of person to speculate about the gender of the baby. Really, he didn't care too much as long as he was a healthy child.
I think he would be the first to suggest a huge list of names, depending on the gender, and to buy some clothes. The process of creating the baby´s room was complicated, and although you suggested doing it after the gender reveal, your husband simply couldn't wait and by the time you realized it, Nathaniel had bought all the necessary furniture.
He decided that he would use light colors for the room, and then you could decorate on top of the white walls with another color. I feel like the room would be strangely symmetrical and orderly. But in the sense that it wouldn't have a warm look. I think Nath always had a huge love for modern things and simple decorations, unlike you.
So, of course, you were in charge of giving it a more homely appearance and placing decorations in warmer colors so that it wasn't all white. In the end, it is simply your way of complementing each other.
AND I'M SURE THIS MAN BOUGHT THE BABY A POLICE SUIT
"Nath! It's a baby!" You reproached him
"A baby police officer.." He corrected you.
Now, it should be clarified that the revelation ceremony was nothing ostentatious. By both of your choices, only a couple of your close friends were invited, a couple of Nath, Amber (who was the first to arrive in a totally pink outfit, EXCITED AUNT!!), and your parents of course.
It wasn't anything too weird, you decided to go with a traditional way, simple confetti.
"Are you ready?" You asked Nathaniel, who could barely hold the confetti shooter.
"Yeah." He said it with such confidence that in chorus with those present, they began the countdown.
And before you processed it, they were both covered in blue confetti.
You immediately felt Nathaniel wrap his arms around you and lift you into the air, uniting your lips in a kiss.
✧. - ̗̀ MEETING THE BABY . . .
I don't think it's necessary to say too much about the birth, but I can say that Nath collapsed at least 3 times during the entire time you were there. But he never let go of your hand. (And thank goodness you didn´t either, because at any moment he would faint)
But after that stressful moment, Nath focused on spoiling you, bringing you your favorite food, taking care of organizing the bags with the baby's things, and making sure you weren't in too much pain.
Although he couldn't stop thinking about seeing him, about holding his baby in his arms. Juts like you of course.
The moment when, after a few moments that felt infinite, he saw the nurse come through the door with a bundle so small that it was completely surrounded by a blanket, he felt his heart skip a beat.
Although he tried to hold on as long as he could, the moment he saw how you received him in your arms, the tears began to fall. There was no sound or words, just his eyes full of love staring mesmerizingly at both of you.
After a while, Nathaniel held him in his arms. The moment he looked into his eyes, all his worries faded away. And he knew he wouldn´t let anything in the world hurt him.
"He…" His voice sounded choked by crying. "He has your eyes…" He couldn't finish his sentence, so he stayed silent to avoid bursting into tears and waking the baby. So he just hugged him against his chest. Nathaniel didn't know at all what would come next, but he was sure that he would do wathever it takes to keep you both safe. Both of you were his whole life. Anything else mattered.
(btw, you can name the baby however you want lol)

"-I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride." You turn to your now husband and give him a smile. He pulls you in, pressing his lips to yours. 6 Months Earlier
"I-I thought you said you were getting better," you look at your father in disbelief. He had just delivered some heart breaking news: he was dying.
For the past few years, he's been receiving treatment and he seemed to be getting better. Turns out, within the last year, he stopped treatment because he was getting tired.
"I was, but sunshine, I just couldn't take it anymore. I'm tired and I'm getting old. I just want to enjoy the last bit of life I have left."
Anger started building up within you. You clenched your jaw and tightened your fists, "But if you end your treatments, you don't get to enjoy life much after! Dad, please just-"
He holds up a hand and you stop talking, "I've already made up my mind, Sunny. And if you're concerned with your financial state-"
"You seriously think I'm concerned with that?" you can't help but be hurt by your father's insinuation.
"You're right. I'm sorry. I know you've never cared for this life," he gestures around to his office, "But, you should know something."
"What?" you're mentally preparing yourself for even more heartbreaking news.
"You and Marc are to be married."
Your eyes widen and your jaw drops, "Are you kidding me?!"
"He will be taking over as my successor once I'm gone and, to make sure you're well taken care of, you'll be marrying him." Your father states everything as factual, giving no room for refusal or compromise.
"But what if I'm already dating someone?"
"You're not. I know you're not. I still have my eyes on you despite you being an adult."
You scoff, "Un-fucking-believable."
There's a knock at your father's office door and he says, "Come in."
The man of the hour, Marc, enters the room. He sees your fuming expression and can't help but smirk, "I see he's told you."
"Clearly. And you're okay with this?!"
Marc shrugs, "Could be worse. Plus, we don't hate each other so this marriage won't be completely unbearable."
You scoff, "Speak for yourself!" you whip around to your father, "Dad-"
"I'm just looking out for you, sunshine."
"And if I don't go through with this?"
Your father's eyes darken, "You can say good-bye to that charity organization you've been working so hard towards."
"You wouldn't."
"Don't forget who still has the power here, sweetheart."
You look to Marc whom still has a neutral expression. You felt conflicted. You'd thought that in this day and age, you'd be able to make your own choices, be able to find someone who you love and they love you back. But the world you've grown up in isn't normal. Your dad is a well known mob boss and he has power. Marc isn't terrible, but you don't know him well. But the charity organization you've been working so hard towards helped children in the community. If your dad takes that away, they won't have anything.
"Fine," you say through gritted teeth, "I'll go through with this."
Your dad's expression changes to glee, "Wonderful! You have six months to get to know each other better before the wedding."
You look at him in surprise, "You already have the wedding date planned?"
"Yes, but the venue, dress, and all of that stuff will be left to you two, of course."
You roll your eyes, "Gee thanks."
"Congratulations you two. Let's have a drink!" you sit and watch as Marc goes to your father's liquor cabinet and pours the three of you a drink. With raised glasses, your father exclaims, "To the L/N Legacy!" the three of you clink glasses and you down the entire glass. You're going to need a lot more where that came from.

Robin's Guns and Swords DCA Romance Fics
These are fics that involve battles, pirates, mob bosses, cowboys, detective and so much more!
Light in the Darkness:
You fall into the debts of the Aperture Science Facility and find the remains of the past. Aperture’s repeating history. To your surprise, at the deepest part of this salt mine of science, you find two robots that should have stopped working long ago. Will they help you find a way top the surface?
Black Sea Glass: (tag)
Trying to escape from a group of mercenaries hunting you down to catch you and collect the bounty on your head, you stow away on what you think to be a merchant ship. Unfortunately for you, you end up on a ship flying under the king’s flag. The two captains decide that you can work on the crew while aboard. Over time you find yourself falling in love with the Captains. This is bad news for you. You have so many secrets to hide and the two captains despise lies. If they find out who you really are will they leave you? Would they turn you in?
Bits and Pieces:
A cop buddy invites you to a speakeasy for a good time. You go to drown yourself in booze. Little did you know that not only would this make your problems so much worse, but you would also gain the attention of the city's two most dangerous mob bosses. You just wanted to run your little coffee shop and leave your life of danger behind, but fate has other plans for you.
Hellfire to Warm the Heart:
There I was, standing in the rain, my ears still ringing from the door slamming behind me. Everything had gone downhill so fast. First, my job fired me without warning or reason then, unable to find a new job, I was evicted from my apartment due to being unable to pay rent. With my suitcase at my feet, I stared blankety down the street. What was I going to do? I had nowhere to go. My family had cut ties with me years ago, and I didn't have a friend to speak of. Was there a shelter I should go to, or would I be sleeping on the street tonight? "Oh, dear! Are you okay?" I flinched, not expecting anyone to speak to me. Looking around, I saw an expensive black car parked at the curb, and a back window rolled down. As I watched, the back door opened, and a man, preceded by a large black umbrella, exited the car. As he straightened, I took a step back, gazing up at a towering individual standing before me. Dressed in a pale blue suit, this guy had to be almost 7 feet tall, towering over me. His hair was shimmery gold, making him look like a sun. Golden eyes glittered as, with a soft smile, the man asked, "You look to be in a bit of a bind. Would you like some help?"
Fish Fry:
(tag)
Pulled from the sea 5 years ago, I was tied up, beaten, and sold to owner after owner, each deciding I was too dangerous to keep. Back then, I was strong, able to break bones and tear flesh with ease, singing to lure humans to their demise. It's what my kind was made to do, kill humans. But no more. Kept in increasingly small tanks, barely fed, and unable to swim, I started to weaken. Eventually, I was dumped here. It was some kind of oddities collection. My owner had other humans pay to look at his strange assortment of items he had gathered from around the world. Then one day I encountered two strange humanoid creatures that resembled the Sun and the Moon and my life started to change for the better.
Two Hunters and a Bloodsucker: (tag)
My life is good for what it is. Except that I’m dead. Well, undead. I’ve been undead for about 15 years now, and I haven’t aged a day. Being a vampire hiding among humans can be difficult at times, mainly dealing with sunlight and avoiding mirrors, but I manage. I’ve been living and working in this little town as the town blacksmith for about 7 years now, and I’ve become a full-fledged member of the little community here. I thought I had been doing a good job hiding my presence among the humans, but one day two of the most well-known vampire hunters came into town. If they find out what I am, they will kill me, but both of them have become intent on becoming my friends and maybe more. How can I keep myself from being discovered when two hunters are trying to romance me?
Cosmic Detectives:
I skid to a halt, a brick wall blocking me in. Turning around, I hoped in vain that I had enough time to backtrack and take another path before I was trapped. Two sets of glowing eyes met my gaze as I faced the entrance of the alley. One set red, the other blue. It was too late. Two guns were leveled at me, ready to fire.
Blood and Stars:
Wedged into my little hiding nook up in the second layer of book shelves, I could hear Sun whimpering somewhere below me. Over excited as he was, he had tripped and fallen face first over the sofa on the main floor, giving me the chance to escape. I was currently on the upper balcony of the library room, hidden behind the reading chairs that adorned one corner, pushed up against the wall. The whimpering turned into sniffles and I could almost believe that he was genuinely injured but I knew better. He had caught me this way before, coming out of hiding to see if he was hurt from whatever fall he had taken, clumsy as he was. He was just toying with me, seeing if I would come out of hiding on my own. Sooner rather than later he would get bored and start his search for me, calling out for me to come play, he wouldn’t bite. He would. The boys usually did. Vampire AU. Sun and Moon have a thirst for blood.
Me and My Flirtatious Pirates (LateNight DayDreams):
Naked cuddling with pirate Sun and Moon.
Astrological Bullets (LateNight DayDreams):
A Wild West story. You’re tied to a set of railroad tracks somewhere in the desert. You’ve accepted your fate, waiting for either the heat or a train to take you, when a strange metal individual happens by.
Some of these won't be finished and some are OLD writing of mine. you have been warned. Please don't let that stop you from reading these and enjoying them <3

Can I please request a (fem reader x Jade West) where the reader has been living off energy drinks and is VERY sleep deprived, so Jade force-cuddles her to sleep? Thank you for reading my request. I hope you have a good day/night! :]
I Don't Need Sleep
Jade x Reader
If there's anything good about Sykowitz's classes, it's that he can definitely wake you up and keep you engaged. You can ride that energy through to the next class. For the rest of the day though, you had your stash of energy drinks.
There was so much you had to do and never enough time to do it. School, homework, your part-time job, chores, and preparing for the next day. Rinse and repeat. Sleep, for the past two weeks, was not on the list.
You trudge through the rest of the school day, downing three energy drinks in quick succession before going to your car and getting ready for work. Being a barista had its perks of an easy uniform. Changing in the car was no issue once you made your way. Too bad the coffee perk didn't help you as much anymore.
How you made it home was a wonder. You were so tired, yet the caffeine coursing through your veins keeps you awake. Well, it kept your eyes open. You were so out of it while entering your house that you didn't even notice your girlfriend, Jade, sitting on the couch with scissors in hand and what looked like a magazine in a pile.
"Welcome home, dear," she greeted in her deadpan voice. You jumped, fear and adrenaline waking you up. The can of caffeine in your hands flies into the air and miraculously lands in the kitchen sink.
"Jade!? When did you get here?" Your eyebrows furrowed. "Why are you here?"
The dark haired goth sheathes her scissors and walks up to you. With a quick yank, she grabs your arm and pulls you to your bedroom.
"We're ditching school tomorrow. You're ditching work tomorrow."
"Whoa, what?" You tried pulling your arm away, but Jade's grip was a vice. "Jade, no. I have homework and chores to do. I can't just leave 'em."
The goth all but chucks you onto your bed and rummages through your dresser to grab pajamas. Your eyes follow her in disbelief. Once she finds what she knows is your comfiest pair, she proceeds to throw them at you.
"I finished your chores today. Your mom let me in before she went to work." After a moment of you not moving, Jade moves to pull your clothes off. She laments that it's not for a fun reason. "You can afford a day off of work and the others can bring the homework we missed tomorrow."
When you're finally dressed, your girlfriend lays on your bed and drags you with her. You struggle against her pull, but in your current state, it was utterly futile. Even as she wraps her arms around you, the struggle continues.
"Jade, lemme go!"
"No."
"Jade!"
"No."
There was an immense amount of patience coming from Jade. Unusual for her on a regular day. However, she was worried about you. Throughout the past two weeks, she watched as her girlfriend shambled around like a zombie. Eyes gaunt with bags weighing them down. Hoodies and sweatpants rather than your usual fashion. Back hunched as you slouch during every action. You hardly paid attention to the ridiculous antics of your friend group. Your current lifestyle was running you ragged and Jade wasn't letting that happen. This was worse than Beck losing sleep over a stupid cricket.
Eventually, you stop wriggling with a huff. Jade takes a moment before saying something.
"You done?"
"... Yes..." You sounded dejected. Tired. Almost like you just gave up on life.
Your girlfriend turns you over and gently caresses your cheek. Your eyes flutter at the touch.
"You need to take better care of yourself. You can't keep pushing yourself like this."
You let out a soft mumble that sounded like a retort. Jade just shushes you. Her hand starts to run through your hair, causing you to let out a soft whimper. She pulls you closer, partly to make sure you stay, partly because she missed having you close. When you mumble again, it's incoherent. She just smirks and continues her ministrations.
Stubborn, you refused to fall asleep. You had things to do. If you could outlast Jade, you could probably get something done. But that all went down the drain when you hear Jade's melodious singing voice. The soft, gentle song begins to pull you into Hypnos' embrace.
Jade continues on until she feels your body relax. Your breathing evens out and finally, you were asleep. She smirks in victory and relaxes herself.
She was a damn good girlfriend.

Original Script Analysis, Part 1: Kataang Is Better... And Also Worse.
I want to start this off by saying that when it comes to media analysis, I personally don’t tend to give authorial intent a significant amount of weight – at least, not by default. I understand why authorial intent is so often debated among media analysts, and why so many metas and critiques often hinge their arguments on paratextual information that serves to provide potential insight on what the authors were thinking or planning. But I myself tend to follow more of a “Death of the Author” framework. There are some exceptions, such as when I believe the author’s stated intent – or even details such as their background, life experiences, advocacy etc – has bled through their work so heavily that it becomes impossible to ignore its impact on the final product. (E.g., reading Fyodor Dostoyevsky compare murder to state-ordered execution, it is hard not to contextualise the passage with the knowledge that Dostoyevsky himself faced a firing squad and was given a pardon at the very last minute). Even then, I tend to treat paratextual information like – Understanding the context behind x scene or y narrative choice potentially adds a layer of meaning to it, particularly why some scenes may have been framed the way they were, or why the author chose to tell/expand/conclude the story like this instead of like that. I use paratextual information to deepen my understanding of the author’s reasonings behind their choices. I don’t use paratextual information to form my opinion on whether their choices were good.
(I prefer to form my own opinion on that, based on what I think of the text itself.)
That being said, like most of you readers I too had heard the many rumours surrounding the writing/production process behind ATLA, especially when it came to the ships. Which ship, if any, was planned for, when were the romance arcs finally decided, were there conflicts/disagreements between writers, were there script changes and animation edits to strengthen one pairing while weakening other, and so on and so on. I’d heard the rumour that The Southern Raiders went through multiple rewrites/changes, because it was originally “too shippy”. I’d heard the rumours that Aaron and Elizabeth were pro-Zutara, Bryan and Mike were pro-Kataang, and that their respective positions/opinions on these two pairings seep through their writing in an acutely perceptible way.
I’d also heard the counter-argument, the official narrative endorsed by the creators that any chemistry or subtext between Zuko and Katara was always intended to be platonic, and that readers who saw anything romantic between these two characters were simply setting themselves up for disappointment by projecting their own expectations or preferences onto the show, nothing more.
Over the past 15 years or so, these debates shaped much of the ATLA “shipping discourse”, sometimes even dominating discussion on the subject. I myself have gotten many a variant of “Zutara was never going to happen, get over it” – even when I’ve made a deliberate effort to omit any mention of authorial intent in my analyses, because, as I’ve said, I still don’t consider that kind of paratextual information relevant to my own opinions on why I think Zutara just works better. But given the intensity of the arguments surrounding behind-the-scenes shenanigans, their impact on the final product, and even their supposed significance in determining shipping validity, it was impossible not to wonder at the truth behind all these conflicting rumours.
So when I set foot in the WGF, it was admittedly difficult to contain my bubbling excitement and anticipation. Even still, I resolved to keep my expectations low. Rumours are rumours, after all. Secondary sources must always be taken with a healthy grain of salt, and some of the rumours weren’t even second-hand information at that. And I already knew that no matter what I found, my own opinion that Zutara is the best love story almost written, would not change.
All that said and done, let’s just say that I found the discovery... highly rewarding, and for those of you who have spent years refusing to accept that you were just “reading into things”, I hope my findings bring you some long-awaited vindication.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are two other disclaimers I need to get through before we continue:
1) The Writers Guild Foundation is not a lending library. You may make an appointment to view the scripts in person, and you are allowed to take notes and manually copy as much as you like. But you will not find copies of their scripts online, and photos and screenshots are strictly prohibited. From what I understand it’s a copyright issue. Legally I’m fairly certain that embedding photos in this post and accompanying it with critique and analysis would/should count as “Fair Use”; however, I know that at some point I’d like to be able to return to the library, and I don’t want to risk being blacklisted for not following their rules.
As such, all the images embedded in this post are reproductions of snippets that I had to manually copy and type up, word for word. It was slow work, so as much as I’d love to be able to just plop the entire script of The Southern Raiders (or any ATLA episode) here for you to read, I had to narrow my focus a fair bit. I mainly noted down, in order of significance:
additions, omissions or changes in the original script compared to the show
bits where the writer’s notes/storyboard directions contained insights or descriptions that I found interesting, surprising, or just plain funny
scenes that weren’t really all that different or unexpected, but we love to see it in writing anyway (ahem Crossroads of Destiny *cough*)
I’m sure there’s a lot that I still managed to miss - even visiting over two days, I couldn’t read every episode. I highly encourage Zutarians living in or near LA to make an appointment and read the scripts for yourselves. You’ll be able to see more than what I’ve posted here, and you might even unearth some goodies that escaped my notice.
(Credit goes to @lady-of-bath for taking my boatload of notes and reformatting them to look like scripts again )
(Also apologies that some passages are split across two images; that just means they were long enough that they spanned two pages and I couldn’t be bothered splicing them back together so I just embedded them here as separate image files. I promise I didn’t cut/remove anything; images not separated by a line of dashes should be read as one continuous snippet 😊).
2) The second thing I ought to clarify is that, from my understanding, the drafts I read were final drafts. These were scripts submitted to the guild just prior to storyboarding, voice acting, animating etc. As I read them, I noticed that the only changes to the script that I could tell were non-dialogue related - so things like, descriptions of the characters’ actions, movements, facial expressions/body language, what you can or can’t see in the shot, etc. Otherwise, voice lines have been essentially kept intact. This suggests to me that the changes made to the script after submission to the guild, were also made after lines had been recorded, possibly even after scenes had been storyboarded. It also suggests that the scripts the voice actors read were the same ones I read in that library. (There is one notable exception that I found, a very interesting exception in my opinion, which we’ll get to later.)
While I would have loved to have seen the earlier drafts, to be able to see how the script changed with each revision (including revisions made to the dialogue prior to voice recording), it’s my understanding that the guild rarely ever receives these scripts, and such was the case again this time. I did also have a look to see if they had the ATLA Series Bible, but unfortunately that hadn’t been submitted either. It is what it is. Still, I’m not mad about what I found. :)
And on that note - ONTO THE SCRIPTS!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I’m going to start off by defending Kataang a bit here. (I know, I know. Don’t worry, we’ll get to the juicy Zutara stuff in due course.) In my 2 hour long video analysis I talked about lack of development being one of the biggest structural problems with Kataang as a ship. Specifically, I showed how you can take the scenes that we know to be “Kataang scenes”, jumble them up so that they appear in a different order than they do in the show, and the end result still makes just as much narrative sense - or maybe even more sense than they did in the show.
Interestingly, the original scripts for these scenes do not fail this test - at least, I don’t think they do. Let’s start at the very beginning:
Tumblr media
It’s love at first sight for Aang, which we all knew already. For Katara, it’s less “love” and more “wonder”. But it’s a powerful meeting for both of them. Honestly, this isn’t all that different from how I perceived this scene on television when I watched it.
Let’s continue with the Fortuneteller:
Tumblr media
Okay, so again, roughly what we see on television. Katara realizes Aang could be who Aunt Wu was referring to, and is unsure what to make of this. Fair.
Next, the Cave of Two Lovers:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tumblr media
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tumblr media
Unlike in the show, Katara doesn’t blush in this script (I also checked the ending of the script where I remember her blushing again in the show, but the script doesn’t mention any blush, anywhere). However, Katara seems to be taking the possibility of Aang as a love interest a little bit more seriously here. In the show version, they hug, Aang seems a little awkward and is clearly hoping for some closure/confirmation of where they now stand, but Katara doesn’t seem to spare it a second thought - she just yeets it out of there. The slow parting and the “awkward look” these kids share in the script suggests, at least to me, that script!Katara is placing more weight on what just happened than show!Katara does, and she at least seems aware, maybe even nervous, of the fact that sharing a maybe-kiss in a secret love cave might do something to their dynamic that she’s not sure how she feels about yet.
The divergences get more interesting now. Enter The Earth King scene, where Aang attempts to confess his feelings to Katara:
Tumblr media
“They both know what he's about to say.”
WELL. Not only did they cut out the “he looks her directly in the eyes” part, but they completely took out any shot that might have indicated a mutual understanding between them, as was written in the script. Instead, we get a deer-in-the-headlights look from Katara, then her head cocks to the side “What is it, Aang?” and then… nothing. Everything about her body language on screen is written to suggest she either has no idea what’s coming, or is doing a great job of playing coy about it.
The cheek-kiss is intact in both versions, however. Let’s keep going.
I didn’t take notes on the Headband. I probably should have, but I didn’t bother because there weren’t really any notable differences between the script version and the show version. What you see is basically what you get - Aang dances with On Ji, Katara is agitated but acts aloof, Aang invites her to dance, she hesitantly accepts, they dance and it’s all very cute. She says “that was some dance party, Aang” and gives him another cheek-kiss at the end. If there were any differences from script to screen, I didn’t spot them.
But there was a pretty big difference for Day of Black Sun:
Tumblr media
(By the way, this confirms an earlier version of the rumour that had been based on alleged edits made fairly late in the storyboarding process. Credit to @lady-of-bath for procuring this receipt).
So, what I’m basically getting here is that, in the original script, up until the midpoint of Season 3, the writing was originally heading towards a Kataang conclusion. And actually - you may disagree with me here but you know what? I actually don’t hate this version of Kataang. (So far, anyway).
There were two main issues I had with Kataang - the structure/pacing of it was all over the place, and on a deeper level I felt that the conflict they set up regarding Aang’s character arc and “letting Katara go” were not properly resolved in the show, leading to a lack of cohesion in the storytelling.
Combing through these passages, script!Katara reads way more natural and realistic, to me, than show!Katara. Let’s look at the progression here, from Katara’s side:
She meets an “adorable” boy and forms an instant attachment to him
She sees their dynamic as platonic until a comment from Sokka makes her question whether it will always be so in the future. She doesn’t quite know what to make of this at the time.
She shares a maybe-kiss with him in a secret love cave, and seems to be aware/nervous that their dynamic may change as a result.
Some time later, he works up the courage to confess his feelings with her, and the script makes it clear that she understands what he’s trying to say and may even have been anticipating it.
They go to a party where Katara is moody seeing Aang dance with someone else. Then Aang asks Katara onto the floor, and they dance, and Katara seems genuinely pleased/delighted.
Finally, just before the eclipse, he kisses her. She may not have been expecting it, but her reaction (smiling after him as he flies away) shows she didn’t see it as unwelcome.
If Kataang were actually written like this, I think that would solve the structural problems of the ship that really bothered me, and I probably wouldn’t have stopped shipping them. It’s very clear to me that taking any of these scenes, as written, and jumbling them out of order, would completely mess up the steady (if subtle) progression of Katara 1) seeing Aang as a potential love interest, 2) understanding he sees her as one, and finally 3) realising she does actually return his feelings.
It also makes Katara feel much more like a real person, and less of an objective for Aang to try to reach in a “two steps forward, one step back” sort of situation.
I think, even then, I still would have shipped Zutara as well, because I don’t think the symbolism and depth to Zutara can be beat. But I’m pretty sure I would have kept a soft spot for Kataang, for the fluff. At least, I wouldn’t be strongly opposed to it. My position would likely be “eh, there’s flaws, and it probably could have been written better, and I think writing Zutara instead would have been more compelling and thematically satisfying but you know what, this is cute. I get it.”
Of course, that’s before we get to the second half of Season 3, where Kataang goes from oscillating in place to taking a nose-dive out of ... nowhere.
And in a way that seems to seriously contrast with how the ship had been written from Cave of Two Lovers to Day of Black Sun, the downward spiral of Kataang coinciding with a deepening friendship/connection for Zutara - seems to be exacerbated in the original script.
Remember how uncomfortable it was to watch Ember Island Players in the show?
...
It’s quite a bit worse here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aang comes off significantly less sympathetic in this version of the episode. Here he is, looking at Katara “accusingly”, and even “glaring” at her, because the actress playing her on stage is flirting with actor!Zuko. Why is he so angry, and at her? And meanwhile, she “pretends not to notice”? Ick.
I’ll be honest, I never had a strong opinion of Aang being “possessive” in this scene. I understand why other people did, and I totally see where they’re coming from with that. Personally though, I kind of gave him the benefit of the doubt and just perceived him as immature, not really getting it, and I always perceived his jealousy to be more hapless than disturbing. This is just my personal opinion, but I felt that their clash in this episode was more indicative of a lack of compatibility and understanding between them than anything else, and obviously I think the non-con kiss was wrong, but generally I didn’t think the kid had bad intentions - I just saw him as... too young, to be honest. He did get pushy and demanding, and either way Katara deserved better, but with Aang, I kind of understood it to be stemming from hope/desperation rather than anger/entitlement.
The writing here, however, does not leave room for me to be charitable. Aang hearing Actor!Zuko suggest that Katara was supposed to be “the Avatar’s girl”, and glaring at Katara as if to say “Yeah!” - I don’t know how to read this as anything other than possessiveness. Yikes on a cracker.
ALSO, did you notice that Zuko and Katara don’t scoot away from each other in this version? Read it again; the absence of that bit escaped me on my first read-through. (Credit to @zutarawasrobbed for spotting that difference!) Zuko and Katara are still sitting next to each other here (the earlier “I wanted to sit here/Just sit next to me, what’s the big deal?” scene is still intact), and all it says about Katara is that she’s pretending not to notice Aang simmering at her from two seats away. Wow.
The non-con kiss is kept intact and most of it is just dialogue so there isn’t much deeper insight to gain from the script, though again, Aang comes off more explicitly volatile/angry at the end of it:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Later, Aang rejoins the group in the theater, and sees Actress!Katara reach a goofy platonic understanding with Actress!Aang, and reacts to this with chagrin and embarrassment. There is no reference to Katara averting her gaze from the screen in a sad or awkward manner, as how she does in the show.
Tumblr media
Overall, I find that Kataang looks worse here, a lot worse than in the show. The omission of Zuko and Katara’s “awkward scoot” is intriguing as well. To be honest, I never perceived “the scoot” to be explicit confirmation or denial of any potential attraction between them (that clip can genuinely be read two ways depending on what trope you’re trying to invoke; neither are inherently invalid), however, the fact that it wasn’t originally written but was added in later... that’s interesting.
Some of you might be forming some opinions by this point. I have some of my own as well, though I want to hold off on them for now. Let’s have a bit of a palate-cleanser with the snippet of Zuko sharing some vulnerability with Katara before we move on:
Tumblr media
Now I am going a bit out of order here - I know that EIP actually happens after The Boiling Rock/The Southern Raiders, but as I was already on the topic of the Kataang arc, I decided to continue with that before I delved into the other episodes. So now we’re going back a little bit, chronologically.
(Also, you know me, gotta save the best for last 😉)
Ultimately I had a very brief look through The Boiling Rock, and nothing really jumped out at me - except for this bit:
Tumblr media
I can’t be the only one tickled at the idea that Zuko just yeets himself out of that prison cell and doesn’t seem to spare Mai a second thought 😂 (if you’ll recall, the show has the two of them share a glance through the cell window after Mai yells “Get off of me!”; Zuko looks apparently apologetic/sad while Mai just glares at him). I know people have pointed out how amusing it is that Zuko seems to forget about Mai completely after TBR, right up until their last scene together, but the way this scene is scripted here just makes it even funnier to me.
But I know which episode it is that you guys all want to read.
Tumblr media
*record scratch*
Oh ho HO, what have we here Elizabeth Ehasz 😉
Tumblr media
lonely, that was the best way to describe kook life. behind all the glamour, the show and the money was a whole pit of nothingness. every kook relationship, be it a friendship or a marriage was one of profit.
marry into a rich family, elevate your status! make friends with powerful people, use their support in your endeavours! so to you, finding friendship and developing a close, almost sisterly bond with sarah cameron was like striking gold.
sarah and you were attached at the hip, wherever sarah was you weren’t far behind, and so it wasn’t a surprise that when sarah started dating john b and started hanging out with the pogues, she brought you with her.
at first it felt weird, spending time on the cut but after a few meetings, you loved it. being on the cut was so much better then the stuffiness of figure eight. you hit it off with the pogues, getting integrated with the group very smoothly. you were close to everyone, except jj.
you never understood what his problem was. at first he refused to speak more than a few sentences to you which according to kie was pretty normal for him since he didn’t really like the kooks or change in general and she assured you that he would warm up in a week or so.
kie was right, well, at first. jj warmed up to you and started to get more friendly. he would initiate conversations and smile at you in greeting when you entered the chateau with sarah. it seemed like the both of you were finally on the path to friendship. jj would bring you cheap alcohol at keggers and sit by you and once he was drunk enough, dance with you by the water. soon the friendly smiles turned into lingering touches, longing glances, things that were teetering beyond the line of “just friends.”
sarah caught on to this, of course she did. “so you and jj?” she nudged your shoulder one day and the both of you sat cozily on her bed. you were sitting dangerously close to the edge of the bed and almost fell off at the question. “w-what?”
sarah smirked, “don’t lie to me, i know you like him” you sighed, there was no point in lying to sarah, she could read you like a book. “i’m not saying that i like him but i will admit that the thought of us being together has crossed my mind more than once .” sarah squealed and hugged you tightly. “double dates here we come!”
***
a week had passed since you admitted your feelings to sarah and things were not going the way you wanted, hell they were going in the opposite direction.
one day things were fine, you and jj sat on the hammock and threw grapes in each-others mouths but the next day he started making snarky comments and the third day started outright arguing over the smallest, most insignificant things. it was like switch had flipped in him.
at first, you ignored him thinking he had a bad day, but as the days passed by and jj got worse each second you could not take it anymore and started arguing back. why should you sit back and let him talk all the shit that he wants? if he was going to press your buttons you would do the same.
and thus began your war with jj maybank. the two of you would bicker constantly.
one day you were five minutes late to meet the pogues at the chateau and jj decided it would be fun to announce very loudly that “her highness y/n has finally graced us with her presence!” you groaned loudly and smacked the back of his head while walking past him which made him let out and exaggerated groan. the rest of the day was worse, you were tying the boat against the dock and he came and stood behind you with his hands on his hips. “you’re doing it wrong. do you not know how to tie a simple knot? or does daddy have someone to do that for you too?” you threw the rope at him. “you do it then, if you’re so smart.” and walked away.
the six of you were lounging on HMS pogue on sunny morning, you lay on your back reading a novel when jj climbed back on the boat after a swim and shook himself, spraying water all over the pages of your book and your dry body. “what the hell jj? you wet my book.” you exclaimed. he stared at you and made a face. “aw did her highness’ precious book get wet? just tell mummy to get you a new one then!” he mocked.
you threw your book aside and stood up, standing in front of jj. “what is your problem maybank? can’t you keep shut for once in your life?”
“not everything goes your way princess, get used to it” he smirked.
your blood was boiling. you shoved him hard and he almost fell into the water. “what the fuck?” he yelled. you walked closer to him. “not everything goes your way.” you mocked his previous statement, smiling smugly.
jj was about to retaliate when kie had enough. “can the two of you please shut the fuck up for once? i can’t deal with your constant bickering. it’s giving me a headache.”
you scoffed at jj and went and returned to your place next to sarah, glaring at the blond boy who was throwing you dirty looks.
****
the annual bonfire was finally here, as much as you wanted to be in in high spirits you were not. in fact, you were high on spirits instead. you sat near the water on the beach with a few empty bottles of alcohol thrown around you.
you were probably on your fifth bottle and were pretty out of it when JJ whistled, coming up to you. “is her highness drinking cheap alcohol? what has the world come to?” he said dramatically.
you flipped him off. “not in the mood for this JJ, please fuck off.” you slurred, not even turning to look at him.
when JJ heard you voice and actually counted how many bottles were around you, he started to get a bit concerned. it was very unusual for you to drink that much, especially that much beer. you hated beer.
he plopped down on the sand next to you and pried the bottle from your hands. you grumbled but didn’t try to take it back from him.
“what’s going on? you don’t drink this much, like, ever.” he questioned. at first you ignored him and told him to mind his own business but after he poked and prodded a few more times you gave in.
“my mom. she doesn’t approve of me hanging out with you guys, called you ‘the trash of the world.’ i kinda freaked out on her and she got mad. said that if i wanted to ruin my life then so be it, but if i wanted to see you guys again i’ll have to meet some snooty kook guy this friday so that i don’t ‘completely ruin the family name’” you rambled, letting out all the frustration you had held inside you.
“ and you know what the worst part is? i dont even care that i have to go to those ‘dates’.” you laughed bitterly. “i just want someone to put a little love on me, you know?” sober you would never have told jj that in a million years but drunk you? she had no filter.
you turned to JJ expecting him to laugh and call you her highness again but he didn’t do that. he looked at you sympathetically.
he stood up and offered you his hand. you looked at him suspiciously and he rolled his eyes, and stuck out his hand again. “i’m taking you home.”
“no don’t take me home, my mother cannot see me in this state.” you worried.
“then where do you propose to go?” he questioned.
you thought for a second and decided that going home now, completely zonked was not a good idea.
“chateau?” you asked him sweetly.
a small smile broke out on jj’s face and he shook his head. still holding your hand, he took you to the twinkie and drove the two of you back to john b’e house.
the journey back in the van plus the alcohol in your system had completely knocked you out and you only woke up when you felt your back hit the soft bed. you slowly opened your eyes and saw jj hovering above you. “whas goin’ on?” you mumbled.
“you need to get out of that dress and into something comfortable princess.” he called me princess you thought to yourself, the word making butterflies errupt in your stomach.
he was holding out a black tee shirt, which was presumably his. you took it quietly, pulling of your top. jj covered his eyes and turned around the moment he realised you were undressing.
“jj” you drunkenly called out. “‘m stuck.”
he turned around and saw one arm sticking out of the head hole and the other in the wrong arm hole. he almost laughed at the sight, but he controlled himself and helped you wear the shirt properly.
you passed out the moment your head hit the pillow. jj looked at you snuggled into the pillows . you looked so peaceful and he couldn’t help himself when he pressed a soft kiss on your forehead, brushing a few stands of hair away from your face. seeing you all cozy and in his shirt made a warm feeling erupt in his belly. he shook his head, snapping out of his trance. he did not have feelings for you. jj maybank does no do feelings.
jj was awake almost all night, thoughts of you and the things you said ran through his mind while he restlessly rolled around on the sofa. “i just want someone to put a little love on me.” was the last thing on his mind before he succumbed to sleep.
**
you woke up with a groan, a pounding headache and bright light on your face early in the morning were not a good combination. you groaned and sat up, pressing your head. when you opened your eyes properly and took in your surrounding, your eyes widened as you realised that you weren’t in your room. looking down to check if you were fully clothed you were a bit startled at seeing a t shirt that you were certain wasnt yours. you got up quickly and almost ran out of the room.
as you closed the door behind you, you saw jj sprawled out on the couch, mouth open, arm thrown over his eyes. you almost smiled at the sight but remembered that you were supposed to be home 12 hours ago and your mom would be pissed to say the least. you tiptoed out of the door and walked home.
***
“where were you?” you cringed at the volume of your mothers voice. “who’s shirt is that?” she screamed pointing at your torso.
“its um, its uh-“ you hesitated, not really sure what to say and the fact that you were majorly hungover was not helping.
“you know what, dont answer me. go to your room. you’re grounded for a week. no phone, no friends, nothing.”
you opened your mouth to protest but your mom held up a finger. “no buts, end of discussion. hand over your phone and go upstairs.” you scowled but handed her your phone nevertheless and trudged up the stairs grumbling to yourself.
**
“what did you do jj?” sarah all but screamed at him as she slammed the screen door shut at the chateau.
“what?” he asked, genuinely confused.
“to y/n! i havent heard from her all day and you were the last person to see her. so im asking you again, what did you do?”
“i swear i didnt do anything! i helped her get to the chateau since she didnt want to go home in a drunk state and then she slept on my bed and by morning she was gone!” jj had his hands up in surrender and was out of breath by the end of his rant.
sarah backed up and placed a hand on her head. “she’ll show up eventually.” she said, more to herself then anybody else.
eventually turned into three days with no sign of you whatsoever. the pogues were starting to get worried. jj was the most concerned but he never let it show, he had a facade to put up after all. sarah tried going to your house a few times but your mother shooed her away everytime.
jj couldnt take it anymore. he felt it was his fault, he should have just taken you home, atleast he would know you were safe.
“i cant take it anymore man, i just need to know that shes ok.” he told pope and john b while smoking a joint outside the chateau.
“you’re worried? you claim to hate her so much then why do you care?” pope raised an eyebrow at him.
jj sucked in a breath and pulled off his cap, running a hand through his hair. “is it wrong that i still wonder where she is? is it wrong that i still dont know my heart? all my life i have always hated the idea of love, having someone who you care about because its all a joke. love is a joke, you just get left high and dry anyway.” his voice cracked.
john b looked at his best friend and the state he was in and pulled him into a hug, pope joining in. the three of them stayed like that for a few moments.
“jj, you deserve to be loved. i understand that youve always run away from love but you need to let yourself take the risk. tell her how you feel, i am sure she feels the same way about you.” john b said. jj just nods meekly.
that night jj felt like a man with a purpose. he got on his dirt bike and rode to your house. he snuck into your backyard climbed up the wall to the window he was almost 90% sure was yours.
knocking on the window he prayed he was right or else he was done for.
you sat on your bed in a pretty green gown which your mother made you try on for you kook date that friday, staring at the ceiling with tears silently rolling down your cheeks when you heard a knock on your window. at first you were going to ignore it but then thought, ‘what the hell, not like i have anything better to do.”
you drew your curtains and were greeted by jj’s face looking through the glass tentatively. “hi.” he smiled.
you unlocked the window and pulled him into your room. “what are you doing here?”
jj didnt reply he just stared at you in your green gown and tear stained cheeks.
“are you all dressed up but have nowhere to go? are your tears falling down when the lights are low?” he asked, with a soft look in his eyes.
you wiped your face and looked away self consciously. “you didnt answer my question.”
“we were worried about you, especially sarah. she claimed she came to check on you but your mother sent her away.” he explained.
you let out a wet scoff. “yeah, mom took my phone and grounded me for a week.”
jj took your hand in his. “are you okay?” you looked at him, staring at his blue eyes that you had fallen in love with despite all the snarky comments he made all the time. they were swimming with concern at your unhappy state.
“why do you care?” you asked him, no hint of malice in your voice. “you hate me, youve made that very clear.”
jj’s heart broke at the statement, yes it was true he pushed you away but he never wanted you to think he hated you. but as time passed he was in too deep to back out.
“i don’t hate you, im sorry if i ever made you feel that way.” he reached out to brush the hair away from your face and you let him, basking in the feeling of his touch.
“i dont hate you, in fact its quite the opposite.” he chuckled to himself. “all my life, ive run away from the idea of love. to me it was all fake, love didnt exist. i saw people in my
life break because of love. my mother left me when i was a baby, my father drowned himself in drugs and alcohol and in a way i lost my father too. john b’s mother left him and now his fathers gone. shit, love never worked out for anyone and i was sure it would not work for me too, but you came into my life and you were different. you made me feel that i wasnt a worthless piece of shit. i started falling in love with you, i got scared and freaked. i tried to push you away but everyday i saw you, i fell harder and i am so sorry for they way i hurt you.”
jj’s eyes were watering and he looked away, wiping his eyes. “jj-“ you began but he cut you off.
“no, im not done yet. just hear me out please. the other night, when you were drunk off your ass you told me something. you said that all you wanted was for someone to put a little love on you. your words ran about my head all night, something shifted inside me that day and i realised i want to be that for you, im not scared anymore. i’ll make up for everything i did, darling ive got so much love hidden beneath this skin, all for you.”
you gasped and wrapped him in a tight hug, burying your face in his neck. he tightened his grip on you waist. “you dont know how much your words hurt me jj, buy despite everything i fell in love with you too. i forgive you, but how do i know you wont run away?”
he pulled away and cupped your cheeks and looked into your eyes with so tenderness you felt your knees get weak. “i promise you, if anyone runs away it’ll be you.”
you smile brightly at him, pulling him into another tight hug. “ you’re the only one i need so put your love on me.”
Bg3 has neither an Asian nor monk companion so I took matters into my own hands.
Tumblr media
Here’s my idea for a companion character. He’s not supposed to be tav/durge but a character you would recruit and have on your party like Gale or Karlach. And yes, he would be romanceable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’ve been thinking a lot about how he would fit into the storyline and gameplay. Here’s the notes I have on my phone regarding his companion quest and hypothetical game mechanics:
Upon first recruiting him, he will tell the group he got captured amidst their pilgrimage across Faerun but in actuality Yeon Ryang was searching for their brother, a leading figure in a growing Kara-Turan crime syndicate
Complicated sibling relationship™
Pretty early on you will learn of his keen disliking of Kozakura and its people. Prying further you’ll discover that he was refugeed as a young child due to a particularly violent Kozakuran invasion attempt of Koryo.
Traveling with Yeon Ryang and garnering approval from him will allow you to refer to him as just Ryang. You will also learn that before he was a monk, he was a criminal. A petty thief at first but his sense of entitlement grew alongside the severity of his crimes. It’s a past he holds ever so shamefully and the reason why he blames himself for his brother’s upcomings.
You’ll learn this past after interacting with the Zhentarim and later the Guild which activate unique cutscenes for him. He will strongly disapprove if you earnestly work for these crime groups and approve if you fight against them. If you romance him and help the Zhentarim overthrow the Guild, he will break up you as well, believing the Zhent to be the greater of two evils.
After learning said past, you also learn that Ryang is highkey obsessed of cleansing himself of his past sins and of all sins entirely. Ryang refuses to let go of his shame over himself and part of his companion is quest is helping him get over it for better or for worse. In the end, either he’ll become cynical to his shame and uses it to justify his return to crime or he’ll acknowledge that his shame will always be a part of him that he can only accept it and try to better himself as much as possible.
Romancing him will give you the dialogue option to ask about his missing pinkie fingers in which he’ll explain to you that it was in fact the head monk of his monastery who severed them as a show of reform and discipline to Ryang. Yeon Ryang doesn’t resent his teacher for this and instead sees it as a deserving punishment and reminder.
Later on it’s revealed that his brother, Yeon San who is currently operating under the name Sanjong, is in alliance with the cult of Bhaal and thus the cult of the absolute by supplying them with paralytic poisons from Kara-Tur (the same Dolor uses). He is hoping that when the Absolute takes control over Faerun, that’ll they extend a hand in an assault against Kozakura
If you encounter Sanjong and kill him without Ryang in your party or kill him without talking to Ryang beforehand, you’ll have to pass a dc30 persuasion check to keep Ryang from leaving your party permanently
His companion quest ends with a showdown between him and his brother where you’ll have to fight Sanjong and his goons. Once you bring him to low health or knock him prone, a cutscene occurs where you can convince Ryang to either spare or kill Sanjong. Remaining silent will result in him sparing his brother and leaving the two to repair their relationship
Whether Sanjong is killed or not, the player will have another choice in influencing whether Ryang will either join the ranks of the Kara-turan crime guild or continue pursuing total redemption
Basic rundown: His companion quest centers around the idea of plausibility of change and Yeon Ryang’s feelings of responsibility over his younger sibling. Either you can lead him down the path of rejecting his monastic ways and reverting back to his criminal life (either alongside his brother or replacing him) or you can inspire him to continue traversing across Toril (with or without his brother) to truly realize enlightenment.
Tumblr media
Whatever the plans had been they had quickly changed after Olivia’s phone call. You stared at your phone, unable to move. You rushed to the hospital to see your father. Olivia mentioned he had taken a turn for the worse over night. She had urged you to stay calm as the stress would not be good for the baby.
You felt panic set in as you tried to remember what Taehyung had said the last time you saw your father. You wanted to rush to the hospital and Yoongi made sure to take you. He tried reassuring you, and asking for you to calm down but you couldn’t.
As you arrived at the hospital it didn’t take long for you to find Olivia. She tried stopping you but you kept trying to make your way towards his room.
“You can’t see him right now. I tried explaining Y/N.” Olivia rushed to pull on your arm gently.
“How is he?” you couldn't look at Olivia.
“These things happen, go to the cafeteria, get something to drink and I’ll be there shortly.” She suggested directing her words to Yoongi.
You were looking towards the long hallway before finally giving in and allowing Yoongi to lead you to the cafeteria where you both sat for what seemed forever.
“Stop it.” Yoongi placed his hand on top of yours. “Stop picking your nails.” he clarified.
“I can’t.. I keep abandoning my dad and whenever things like this happen, I just…. I realize I don’t spend as much time with him as I should.” you stared at the cup of water in your hands.
“Hey, don’t say that.” he hesitated for a moment. “You can’t control how his body reacts to his medication. It’s a miracle he has made it this long.”
“It’s true. And still I always run away. I was gone for months. Before that I was gone for a month and before that months.. It’s like two years I wasted being selfish and weak.” tears finally began spilling freely the time you had left with him was borrowed and you kept taking it for granted.
“Stop, you needed that time. There was nothing you could have done. This is in the hands of the doctors and how well he responds to the treatment.” he pulled on your hand until you finally faced him. “This isn’t your fault.”
“Hey guys.” Olivia took a seat across from you. “I called you because there was a change, because I always want to be honest. But you need to calm down. It’s not good for your pregnancy.” She looked at Yoongi. “It’s not a high risk pregnancy, but because of her past history we need to be careful.”
“Because of the misscarriage?” you asked not looking at her. You felt ashamed.
“It’s better to be safe than sorry. Try not to stress too much. You have a couple of months left. Enjoy them. Right now we changed the medication on your father and he seems to be stabilizing. I just called you because…” she stopped and looked away unable to finish her sentence.
“Because?” Yoongi inquired, when there was no response it was you who answered.
“Because he might die.” you finished for her.
“She doesn’t mean that.” Yoongi looked at you, but when Olivia didn’t answer again he looked at her. “You don’t mean that right?”
“Unfortunately, we are not sure. He could be stable and then take a dive. For now like I said he is stable. But I will keep you updated.” she got up from her seat and looked at you both. “I think you should go home. At least for now. You being here stressed out of your mind doesn’t help him or you.I will let you know of any changes but I strongly suggest for you to go home.”
For some reason that rubbed you the wrong way.
“Why because I've already neglected him?” you didn’t mean to raise your voice. It just happened. “Because I am never here regardless so why would now be any different?!” your voice just continued to rise.
She looked affronted by your questions.
“Not at all Y/N.” she responded quietly, doing her best not to trigger you further. “I can only imagine how difficult this must be. The last thing I want is something happening to your baby.”
But you were not letting it go.
You rose from your seat suddenly, almost knocking the chair out in the process. Yoongi reacted instantly, getting up almost as quickly as you.
“Say it!, I am a bad daughter! That’s what you meant!” By now tears were running like a river.
“Y/N no, I swear I just meant there is no need for you to be here if your father’s health depends upon the medication.” she stuttered trying her best to explain that whatever happened it would be no one’s fault. “This has nothing to do with you. Even if right now you were not here the changes would have happened the same.”
“Liar!, you are a liar!” At this point you seemed hysterical.
Yoongi grabbed your face with his hands as gently as possible.
“Y/N!” he yelled trying to catch your attention. “Y/N! Look at me!” Finally your eyes focused on his. “She wasn’t saying that. She is going to keep an eye on your father. And if anything happens she will let us know. Do you understand?” Finally after what seemed like forever you nodded still crying.
Yoongi looked at Olivia and then back at you.
“Uh.. can you let me know of any new developments please?,” he requested softly.
“Yeah, of course.”
“Me. Not her.” you seemed as if you were going to protest but he just smiled softly. “Let’s go, I’m taking you home.” Yoongi walked out of the cafeteria with you.
Olivia stared as you let Yoongi guide you through the double set of doors. She turned to go back and check on your father when she spotted Namjoon.
“Did you …” she trailed off looking back to the doors you had just walked through.
“Yeah, bad news?” he had seen how you had lost any sense at the mention of something happening to your father.
“Yeah, he is in really bad shape. She just lost it.” Olivia mumbled. “Did you have a chance to talk to her?” she started walking towards the exit of the cafeteria.
When no response came from Namjoon she turned to search for him. He was still standing on the same spot.
“Namjoon?” she called out.
“I heard you say she needed to be careful.” he was staring at the double doors you had just walked through.
“Well yeah, I mean stress and anxiety is bad enough on anyone. And she is pregnant.” Olivia was confused. “Namjoon she is okay, the pregnancy is okay she just needs to be careful.” Suddenly something dawned on her. “No, you HAVE to tell her.” She reached out to him but he moved away. “Namjoon!”
“Don’t you see?, she is already stressed as it is. I will not add to her stress by asking her to choose between Jimin and me.” He looked away sad all of a sudden.
“Namjoon you don’t have to do this. Are you scared? Is that what this is?”
“No, I’m putting her well being before anything.” he started walking away.
“Namjoon ! you have to tell her.” he didn’t stop walking as Olivia got increasingly more annoyed. “Namjoon!” but he was already gone.
He drove towards Yoongi’s apartment as if in a daze. His brain was on autopilot. He realized then he had never truly given up on you until that particular moment. He felt like something inside him was being torn apart. But he had to be grateful. By some miracle you had conceived a child. He realized then that even if he couldn’t have you as his wife, he could see his child grow. He would be tied forever to you regardless of anything. He would get to see you happy, even if it wasn't with him.
He knocked on the door and Yoongi answered with a roll of his eyes. This he expected. Yoongi wasn’t a fan of his.
“Look, can you come back some other time, she is not feeling great.” he blocked the door already sounding annoyed.
No, he needed to talk to you. Or he might take it back. If he left without telling you what he had made his mind up to do Olivia or Seokjin would try and talk him out of it.
“It will just take a second,” he pleaded.
Yoongi looked behind him and then ever so slowly opened the door just enough to let him in.
“If I hear any garbage you leave and never come back.” he threatened in a whisper.
Namjoon walked further into the apartment to find you in the living room. Your eyes were swollen, your body shook slightly as you clutched a blanket to you. He finally stopped directly in front of you. Your eyes looked up and finally settled on his face. He sat in front of you on Yoongi’s center table.
“I heard about your dad.” a tear rolled down your cheek and he felt his heart breaking for you.
“Yeah, I’m not…. I don’t….” you couldn’t seem to form a sentence.
“I know we had a pending conversation. All I wanted to say was…” he loved you and he wanted to be the one to make you happy. The one to be with you always. “We are adults, you said it yourself. My private life is my private life and you have yours. I will respect it and ask for you to do the same. You can always call me for anything, and I will be here for our child for everything. I don’t want you to stress about anything else. I know the situation with your father is a bit touch and go but I will be here for anything that you need. You are the mother of my child and you will always be able to count on me.”
You stared at him as he finished. He wasn’t looking at you but at your hands. You tried meeting his eyes but he looked away.
“Is there anything you want to say?” His tone was soft, but his words felt harsh.
“No,” you whispered. “You’re right. Thank you.” tears spilled again but you weren’t sure if they were for your dad or the finality of the situation.
He looked at Yoongi then, “If she needs anything let me know. I’ll pick you up for your next doctor appointment.” he rose to his feet but stayed for a few seconds, before leaning in and kissing your cheek softly, lingering just a few seconds before fully walking away.
He managed to make it to the elevator before the tears finally drenched his cheeks.
❁ ≖≖✿❁ ≖≖✿❁ ≖≖✿❁ ≖≖ ❁
“He didn’t say that.” Yoongi said as he handed you a warm tea.
“He basically did. He said his private life is his. What else can it mean?” you sipped slowly still sitting down on the couch.
You were bothered. Namjoon continued to hide Nari from you. Or maybe she had asked to not know anything about you. This was about avoiding stress on her. Maybe she was just so trustful of Namjoon she knew nothing would ever happen that would be deemed improper. She was that sure of his love.
“He loves her so much.” your voice broke.
Yoongi groaned. “I hate how that bastard still makes you feel like that. He somehow still manages to get a rise out of you.”
“I can’t do this to Jimin.” you mumbled softly. You turned your gaze to Yoongi who wasn’t looking at you.
“I know.” he sighed and walked to the kitchen. He came back with a beer bottle. “I thought all you needed was to be around him, let him pamper you and you’d get over Namdouche, but… I was wrong.”
“He deserves someone who loves him and is not hung up on her ex. I need to just get rid of the choice. I don’t want it. I don’t deserve it.” you broke again and Yoongi hugged you tightly to him.
You asked to talk to Jimin a couple of days afterwards. Somehow, Jimin sensed the topic of conversation. Everything had become far too complicated, he knew you had never gotten over Namjoon. And with a child on the way your feelings could only grow stronger.
Despite Namjoon having another family.
Despite Namjoon not loving you.
You still did.
The conversation had been pleasant as most things with Jimin were, it was a tragedy you could not fall in love with him. But you couldn’t ask for him to wait indefinitely for something that might not even happen. Jimin wanted to be close to you still. No matter what he still cared for you even if you only allowed for a friendship he would take it.
Namjoon kept checking up on you. But contact had been limited to doctors appointments and polite check up texts. As time kept passing your grudge began to grow causing you to become bitter and resentful.
Yoongi had driven you to your latest doctor appointment. Namjoon was out on business but had vowed to return quickly. This would be the first appointment since your arrival he would not be attending to. And it bothered you more than you cared to admit.
Yoongi remained quiet as you walked silently towards your check up. He sensed something bothering you but opted not to say anything until you decided to bring it up.
“Very strong heartbeat,” Olivia commented almost to herself as she spread the gel around your belly.
“That’s good right?” Yoongi asked from where he stood with his arms crossed.
Olivia looked away from the screen to look for the voice and smiled.
“Oh yeah absolutely. Having a healthy heartbeat is definitely what we want.” She grabbed a paper towel and began cleaning your belly.
“What is Namjoon having?” You asked.
Olivia looked at you surprised.
“I thought you wanted it to be a surprise.”
She had insisted on telling you the gender but you had opted for a surprise instead. Namjoon had respected your wishes and decided to wait for the birth as well.
“No, what are Namjoon and Nari having?” Your voice sounded harsh, almost broken.
Olivia sighed loudly. “Y/N I’ve told -”
“No!” You interrupted. “You guys treat her like she is this precious treasure and will not tell me anything about her. I know Namjoon must be so happy he finally married the love of his life! But if we are to have a semblance of a family shouldn’t I know about her pregnancy too? I mean I’m sure you all tell her about mine!”
You were slightly out of breath, and you hated how bitter you sounded. Somehow you couldn’t move on from Namjoon but he had started a new family with the woman he had loved his entire life and even if you sounded like a ridiculous petty bitch you wanted for them to know you were hurting.
“I can’t tell you. And I’m sure you don’t want any details that could upset you.” She tried reasoning.
But you were past that point.
“Olivia..” your voice came out in a warning but you stopped at the feeling of Yoongi pulling on your arm.
“She is right, let's just go Y/N.” He tried pulling on your arm but you pulled back.
“He is a fucking asshole. He destroyed my life and all this time I thought that I was okay..” tears were finally filling your eyes. “I can’t be okay knowing that this baby might have the same fate I had and I can’t stop thinking about it. I can’t let him hurt my baby in the same way he has hurt me.” Tears finally streamed down your cheeks.
“Y/N what are you talking about?” Olivia’s voice came out almost in a whisper. She was trying not to upset you but you were letting out all your pent up feelings.
Granted you should have let them out to Namjoon but he wasn’t there.
“I’m leaving.” You turned to leave but she rushed to stand before you.
“Hey move!” Yoongi tried to move her but she pushed him.
“Think about what you are saying, okay?, you are upset at this whole ordeal but all you need to do is have a fucking honest conversation with my brother to see his side of this.” Finally Olivia’s voice came out much harder than it should.
“I’ve always been honest with him!”
“Oh have you?!, after your miscarriage you disappeared! After you came back and were supposedly happy with my brother you disappeared again! You always fucking disappear and make it seem like it’s okay to dish out whatever the hell you want at Namjoon! You know what? He is not perfect but neither are you!” She pointed her finger at you.
You all stood in silence staring at each other.
“We are leaving.” Yoongi declared pulling you to the exit.
You were left speechless and you didn’t know how to respond. She was right. You always ran away to protect yourself, but also you never believed it had any type of impact on Namjoon.
Namjoon never showed any type of love or any type of hurt whenever you left or disappeared. On the contrary it felt like you were doing him a favor. The last time you left you’d left him to do his own thing with his family which is what you assumed is what he wanted. To make a family with Nari.
“I tried.” You mumbled at Yoongi as he walked ahead of you. He made no to acknowledge what you said, you stopped walking then and raised your voice. “I said I tried!” You repeated.
Finally he stopped walking, his hands went to his hips as he sighed loudly and looked up at the sky as if searching for an answer.
“I heard you the first time.” He turned to face you. “You tried to protect yourself and that’s completely fine.” He reasoned, but you could tell he was just trying to sugar coat it.
“I’m selfish, just say it.” You folded your arms as you felt a chill go through you. “Just tell me how I fucked everything up.” You were already tearing up, your voice cracked as you said it.
“I am not saying that, look, it takes two to break up a marriage. I just feel like you have never taken responsibility for things.” The tone in his voice was soft as if he was trying to cushion the blow.
“What are you talking about?”
“Let’s just go home and we will talk there okay?, this isn’t the place.” He reached out for you but you recoiled.
“Just fucking say it!”
“When Nari told you she was pregnant, why did you believe her? Why did you just leave without fighting for Namjoon if you loved him so much?” This cut through you like a knife.
“You supported me!, you sent Jimin my way to help me escape and now you are asking me why I didn’t hang back and what? Investigate?” You were openly crying now.
“Yes, I did. I never liked him! Your relationship was always toxic and when this happened I thought it would finally be the last blow for you to let go of him and be happy! But things are worse now!You are worse! You are bitter and resentful, do you think I haven’t noticed you crying at night? At you always wondering out loud about Namjoon? You didn’t even try with Jimin because you still love Namjoon for whatever fucking reason he is in you like a fucking disease and I thought throwing you with someone who was the complete opposite was the cure but it wasn’t! Now I wonder why on earth I didn’t push you to fucking stay back and try to figure it out!”
You reeled back at his rant. He was right as usual.
You tried thinking back to when everything had first happened and you couldn’t remember having hope at all. All you could think about was how when you learned of Nari’s pregnancy all you could see was an in for Namjoon to be happy.
“I didn’t know I was pregnant!” You yelled back.
Yoongi’s face contorted into confusion.
“If I’d known I was pregnant I wouldn’t have left like that!, but I thought I was in the way of his happiness. He never denied having feelings for Nari, he never made me feel like I was important to him and that is what made me leave and not look back.”
“You said things were different, after Paris. You said you were happy, that things had changed. That HE had changed.”
“Yes, but I would never be Nari would I?” You cleaned your tears and finally Yoongi wrapped his arms around you.
“Maybe you should just talk to him, like you talk to me.” He mumbled against your hair.
“I can’t do that I’d -” you felt something at your feet.
You looked down and started.
“Did…” Yoongi trailed off.
“Did my water break all over your shoes?” You were breathing hard. “Yes I fucking think it did.”
My gender is 4 years old
...and four days, as of April 15th. This post is a bit late. 😅
Four years ago, all the confusing little puzzle pieces I'd been collecting came together in a genuine eureka! moment and I realized I was transgender. It was exhilarating and terrifying and it undeniably changed my life for the better.
The last few years have felt pretty damn slow and I've had to scramble over a few frustrating obstacles (never changing my name AGAIN, lmao, that was annoying as fuck) but it's all been worth it and now it feels like I'm really making headway.
I started testosterone this past year! I did that! I'm almost 7 months on T now! Currently on a dose of two pumps of gel, which I have only missed applying once in all that time because I was literally sick. The changes are gradual but they are real and they have already brought me so much joy and made me so much happier in my humble flesh prison. 💗
Tumblr media
The most anticipated change for me (and for a lot of transmasc folks, I imagine) is my voice, and BOY (heh) am I happy to share this data comparison with you:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ LEFT: A screenshot from the Voice Pitch Analyzer app, dated November 3rd, 2021. It shows that OP's voice registers fully within the female voice range. RIGHT: Another screenshot from the app, dated April 12th, 2024. This one shows that OP's voice registers mostly between the Androgynous and Male voice ranges. ]
My voice is so different now. It sounds different, it feels different, and in just the last week or so I swear it has gotten a little rougher and raspier and I am LIVING. I could not be happier!!!
...okay, fine, I could be happier lmao.
I'm adjusting to my deeper voice and still learning how to use it in a way I like & that feels best to me, so I'm starting to do some casual at-home voice training again after basically forgetting about the concept completely since 2021. (Whoops.) But I am already so much happier and more content with my voice than I have ever been in my life, so it's only getting better from here, lads. <3
I've also had to go to a lot of appointments and answer a ton of phone calls about said appts recently because I kinda fucked up my eyeball (it's better now, don't worry! and be gentle to your eyes, they are delicate and eye drops are so fucking annoying when you're doing them seven times a day, jfc) and my voice has reached a point where I was a lot more comfortable interacting with strangers and I also didn't notice any surprise or confusion when I introduced myself with a male name! It was kind of amazing.
Also singing is even more fun now. I love love LOVE singing along with a male vocalist and feeling the way my voice kinda rumbles through my chest. 10/10 sensory experience.
Other changes aren't nearly as exciting or obvious as my voice, but here's a quick (?) rundown, for those who are curious:
Mood — Gotta be honest, I don't think I've really noticed any significant change in my day-to-day mood, though I may not be the best judge for this because I have trouble figuring out what/how I'm feeling in general, tbh. But I think I have certainly gotten more comfortable and content with myself and I'd even go so far as to say I feel a little more confident these days. It's nice, I appreciate it.
Acne — I definitely noticed a change in how my acne presents itself on my face. I wouldn't say it's worse than before (I've had very bad acne since I was a young teenager and only got medication for it like, last year which has helped immensely) but I think it's different. More little red spots and roughness than the unpleasant and painful pimples I'm used to. I don't even mind it, really. Oddly affirming.
Facial Hair — I've got facial hair. I really do!!! Not clickbait!!! It's not much, not enough for me to be brave and take my dad up on his offer of shaving lessons quite yet, but it has grown in enough that I don't feel silly including it in self portraits! 🤭🧔🏻 Got a little bit of a mustache happening, a little bit at the sides of my face, some fuzz on my chin (with one LONG hair that I can only assume has been greedy and stealing his brothers' growth), and a frankly surprising lil patch of hair under my jaw. On a semi-related note, not sure if my brows have gotten much darker/thicker. They might have? idk.
Tumblr media
my new discord icon, hehe... 👁💜🪓
Body Hair — I have gotten a little more hair on my forearms, and it may have gotten a little darker too! I have a tattoo on my arm just below my left wrist and it's been surprisingly helpful for measuring arm hair growth because for years my tattoo was not covered by hair at all but the left side of it's a little fuzzy now... 😏 I've gotten more noticeable hair growth on my upper arms, which were basically hairless before (free gender euphoria every time I put on my T) and on my thighs. Don't think my lower legs have gotten much hairier, and I'm a little impatient about it lmao. I want to get hairy enough to rival my brother.
Energy/Appetite — Can't say I've really noticed any differences here? I am not a very active person and I already struggled with appetite and getting myself to eat before I started T (thank you adhd & poor eating habits 🥲💀), so I can't quite tell if I'm ignoring more hunger signals than usual. 😅 I am hoping to get more active and start doing more physical activity now that it's starting to get warmer outside again, so hopefully that will help me see these sorts of changes and also get me into some better eating habits as I expend more energy and work up a proper appetite! (Also, since we're on the topic... a reminder for all of us that taking care of yourself and feeding the body you live in is a million times more important than aesthetics and numbers on a scale. ❤)
Menstruation — I am still getting my period right on schedule, but I am happy to say it is considerably lighter than it was before I started testosterone! My period has begun getting shorter, too. It lasted for roughly 7–9 days before, but I was bleeding for exactly 7 days last month, and only 6 days this month. I'm not sure if this trend will continue at such a dramatic rate, but if my next round is only 5 days I will be very excited about it, lol. My uterus can retire any day now, please...
Bottom Growth — if any of my friends read this part, don't speak to me about it lmao — Yeah... there's a little bit of something happening down there. Not a lot, and I haven't really noticed any pain or sensitivity, but there's a Difference. Aaaaand I like it. 😌 I am looking forward to any and all future developments. 😏👉🏻👉🏻
Okay! I think that's it, really.
I know I haven't been super active on this blog for quite a while now (I have really gotten into fandom blogging on my main lmao, and also discord is my favorite thing right now, it's where 90% of my friends live) so I hope this nice, long, ramble-y post makes up for that a little bit. <3
Not gonna make any promises that I'll post here more often, but y'know. I might. It could happen. Definitely not leaving this blog to sit and gather dust, that's for sure. I'll still be reblogging stuff semi-frequently, even if I'm not writing up my own posts.
So goodbye for now, and thanks for tuning in! 👋🏻📻💖💙✨️
“Fuck.” You whispered under your breath, watching the screeching figures rush by after the figure of Joel leading them away from you. Ellie had tripped, causing rubble to tumble over cracked asphalt and alert them of the fact that people were within the city limits and exploring through the remains of what was once a decent metropolis. Your arm stung a little from where you were still healing, the injury of your broken arm two months old now. But you were able to use it, no longer confined to a sling. Your lungs still a little sore from the plunge you had taken into a frozen lake one month ago now.
Traveling had been hard, the harsh winter not letting up but seemingly getting worse with every day. Ellie found more of herself, falling back on snark and puns in a way that helped to bridge the gap that had begun to form between you and the man currently risking his life to give you both a chance to hide and seek shelter in the torment of the snowstorm raging on.
“Bookstore or library? City looks too small for one, but everyone used to have a library at least, right, Bean?” Ellie’s voice was barely audible behind you, her gun rattling slightly as her hands shook despite the gloves and heavy layers scrounged up along the way to Wyoming.
“Yes, Gremlin. We just have to find a map or something about the area.”
“What happened to yours?”
“Gave it to Joel.” You stood from your crouched position, knees popping audibly. You peered around the corner of a crumbling building, your longer hair fanning out from beneath your beanie. The curls getting ratty with the harsh reality of backpacking around the desolate land of what was once civilization. Ellie’s wasn’t much better, tangled in a ponytail that you were sure would hold its shape even if you cut the band from around it. Similarly, Joel’s steel locks had begun to curl around the back of his neck and around his ears, a darling curl falling over his forehead when he glanced down or seldom relaxed his watching gaze on everything.
“What…what’s been going on, Bean, please tell me.”
“Ellie, it’s not…nothing happened. I really don’t know, but you have nothing to worry about, we’re both going to keep doing our best to look after you.”
You both quietly moved through the city streets, ducking behind cars when any noise was too close, or the shuffle of the Infected echoed off crumbling buildings. Cody was a decent sized city, not quite a metropolis but was spread out over a good dozen square miles. Big enough to get lost in, big enough to fall victim to with how overrun it was. There were so many Infected, the Clickers and Runners hiding within the interior of buildings that were trying to withstand the test of time. But far too many for comfort, Ellie was close on your heels as you lead her toward where you suspected the library would be.
The whole, slow way your thoughts were focused on the task at hand, instincts taking over. The niggling feeling in the back of your mind concerned with the way Joel had been pulling from you recently. The spikes of anxiety you could read from him, feeling as if you were experiencing them firsthand. Which you had been as well, the journey through the harshening winter something that was testing you all in ways that you hadn’t expected to be so difficult.
‘Gasping for air, your entire body tensed as unconsciousness was ripped from you like a blanket by an exasperated mother the morning of a school day. Hands were wrapped around you, rigid but comforting and holding you still as you began to rouse.
“It’s okay, just breath, you’re okay.” A deep, baritone voice tried to sooth you, syrupy sweet and soft close to your ear. You vaguely recognized it, mind scrambled.
Words failed you, getting stuck in your chattering teeth as you shivered so hard it felt like convulsions.
“Took a dip in the lake, not the best decision you’ve made, but we got you on the mend.” The voice continued to talk softly to you, comforting you the same way that the arms around you were.
Shifting, you realized Joel was curled around you, making you the little spoon as he tried to get you warmed back up. His chest bare just like your back and the hush of the hair that he adorned noticeable as your senses slowly came back to you. Your hair was damp, so it must not have been too long ago when he pulled you from the water. You tried to ask but your teeth clattered against each other too loudly.
“Sweatin’ from head to toe, despite the chill settled in your bones, darlin’, had to strip down to try and get your body heat up. I assured Ellie it would be okay with you, made sure to change you into dry underwear beforehand. Didn’t want her thinking I was doing anything…bad.”
“G-good call, on-only way.” You stuttered out, feeling the thickness of his thighs pressed up against your own. It seemed that every blanket between the three of you and what had been in the cabin were draped over both of your forms. The fire crackling close as you lay on the floor in front of it.
“You scared me, you scared the hell outta me.”
“Tried to take him out, he tackled me and we rolled onto the la-lake.” It was hard to talk, to get the words out past trembling lips. But the warmth slowly seeping back into your skin and settling there allowed you to try. It was lulling you, the warmth on both sides, all around. The jolt of awareness fading fast as your body realized how hard it was fighting to stave off the cold, aided by the warm body wrapped tight around you with a tight grip.
“I don’t think I could handle loosing another person.” He murmured into the back of your head, lips buried in your hair as you nodded back off.
I would be something that echoed in your mind.’
He had hovered, that first week after the incident, insisting that the cabin remain a home base of sorts, he had hunted, hung up what he could to try and preserve it for travel. Ellie staying behind when he went to check the traps, telling her that you needed someone to watch after you. But you knew what he was doing, he was distancing himself. He was marking the sand around him with deep lines that should not be crossed. But the thing about sand is that it shifts, it can be swept up, it can consume you, it could damn you as well as any boundaries you tried to mark into the vulnerable surface.
For the first week back traveling on foot, he set up his sleeping bag close to yours. An arm’s reach away in case you shivered too harshly or coughed too loudly. Your arm hadn’t been damaged in the fall or the following struggle back to the surface, but it had set you back on needing to redo the stitches you had just removed the day before.
Shaking your head and focusing, you turned the corner of a building made of brick. Bloody handprints painted across the pale pink of the faded bricks catching your eye as you spied the sign for the library in the distance.
“C’mom, gremlin. Almost there.” You whispered to her, catching sight of too many bodies clustered on the ground not even ten feet away. They shied away from the sun when it peeked through the dense overcast that seemed to become a permanent fixture. Some looked to be standing, or even sitting against the building. The ones that were didn’t shift when the sun shone down on them but groaned all the same. Squinting, you could just make out that they were attached to the wall by long fibers that spanned over the side of the building. Large bulbs had sprouted up among the veinlike display, some directly on the bodies overtaken by the fungus.
Spores.
It had evolved into spores.
“Ellie, pull your collar up over your mouth and nose. Now.”
Looking back toward it, you pulled the bandana you had tied around your neck up to cover your own face. Ice coated it all, though the Infected, melting slightly in the sun that was now shining down through the split in the low cloud coverage.
Tumblr media
The crunch of glass underneath a boot had you whipping around toward the entrance you had tried to barricade. Ellie ducking beneath one of the few standing shelves further in the building you had taken your time to clear and make sure was safe. The local library of Cody the agreed upon meeting place so many days ago it felt like a lifetime ago, between different people than who were now using the strategy in the face of a too real notion you had voiced about separation.
Joel’s broad form came into view from the shadows of the entrance, looking disheveled but intact. The layers he was bundled up in making him an imposing figure. His eyes frantically scanning the inside of the building, an anxious twinge gleaming in them before they landed on your cautious form peering from behind a pillar. You couldn’t tamp down the instinct to move toward him, wrapping your arms tight around him. He couldn’t seem to resist his own instincts to bring his arms around you to return the embrace, tight hold that brought you flush against him.
Surging up, you placed a chaste kiss to his chin and then both of his cheeks, one last gentle one to his lips despite the adherence to touching he seemed to take up slowly toward you. But it didn’t feel perfunctory, it felt like a welcome home that would fall from his lips if reality were different, if you had been home before him and he finally crossed the threshold back into a space you both shared. His cold lips moved against yours, pressing back to deepen it and his tongue swiped at your bottom lip in a silent question. You were just about to part your lips for him to taste when Ellie realized the coast was clear and came out of her hiding spot.
“Gross, y’all gotta keep it PG, I’m still a child!”
Joel tensed, his blunt nails digging into the layers wrapped around your body. With a grunt, he broke the kiss and sent a mild glare over your shoulder toward the rambunctious teen. Rash, he thought and you saw It flash over his face at both of your thoughtless actions to reach out for each other. But instinct was a funny thing, threw inhibitions out the window, threw self-preservation out the window, the thin, sheer curtain of privacy out the window, forgotten for a moment.
“Oh, suddenly you’re a child, but back when you wanted stay up for a round of night watch you were old enough and responsible enough?” You quipped back with a teasing smile, detangling yourself from Joel and facing her with your hands on your hip.
“Well-“
“Hush it, go see what we can use that’s still around, but don’t go too far!” You waved your arm at her, the other on your hip as you tossed her a faux irritated look, but the smile quirking up the corner of your lip broke the stern image you were trying to make.
“Didn’t wanna hear whatever mushy crap y’all are gonna say to each other anyway!” She stuck her tongue out at you before turning on her heel and walking away further into the building.
“Joel,” You placed your hands on his chest, trying to get his attention as he watched Ellie’s form.
“I saw it, the spores. That means we’ve all be potentially infected just being in the vicinity of Cody.”
“Infection can show signs as delayed as eight hours. Joel there’s no way to know until we do or don’t show symptoms.” He took your hands in his, feeling the slight tremors in them as your mind worked a mile a minute. Eyes flashing with something that could only be determination as you locked your gaze on his. “But it looked mostly iced over, moving slow but still alive.”
“We gotta move out, too alive for comfort.” He slid his hands from you and put his gloves back on, flipping his coat collar back up to shield his neck.
“Copy that.”
“We’re going to be okay, we know Ellie is safe.”
“Copy that.”
Tumblr media
A harsh grunt had your head turning swiftly back toward the clearing you were on the edge of. Trees lining the edges of your vision and their naked limbs reaching out as if to comfort you. But they would damn you sooner than that, exposing you to any threat even this deep into the forest where you had sought relative safety for the night. Joel’s sleeping bag cradled figure was shifting, moonlight showing the anguish he was experiencing even in sleep. A nightmare.
He had been having more and more of them, sleep restless and mumbled words falling from his fitful form most nights or when he nodded off.
“Joel.” You murmured quietly, hand hovering just over his shoulder. He didn’t startle, but woke with a deep gasp, eyes flying open.
“Woah, hey, it’s okay. It’s just me, you were having a fit, just making sure you’re okay.”
“’m fine.” He said as he pushed up from the confines of his sleeping bag. You leaned back on your heels where you had kneeled beside him. Confusion colored your senses before you shifted into a neutral expression. He had been pulling away, the tentative kisses you shared a few days ago the first instance of comfort you both indulged in since the cabin.
“You’re fine.” Monotone agreement to appease him fell from your lips. He shoved off from his spot and you let him walk away, boots crunching in the snow that had built up since settling for the night.
“Takin’ over watch.” He said before disappearing in the thick of the trees, not a glance back toward you or a sleeping Ellie.
“I’m fine too,” You exhaled shakily, sharing in his own lie.
Tumblr media
The blinding white landscape stretched out as far as you could see. Packed snow and ice all around for miles and miles as winter claimed the land for its own. You kept glancing over at your companions, worry settled deep in your soul. For the girl whose teeth chattered with the cold, edge of her nose pink despite the layers wrapped around her. For the man whose anxiety was beginning to show the longer the journey took and the nightmares that plagued him every night.
He looked washed out, from far more than the endless brightness of winter shining down. He was exhausted, he was worn out, he was holding the crumbling pillars of himself up with sheer determination and devotion to finding the one thing he knew in this world, his brother.
As you tried to keep your boots from slipping, the hush of snow underfoot, a structure suddenly appeared on the horizon. Smoke calmly billowing from a chimney.
The creak of the door opening had your muscles tensing, hidden behind a wooden pillar inside the warm cabin. Joel was across the space from you, gun positioned right in front of him, a calmness about him that you hoped meant no one would be dying today.
The man who had entered back into his home looked over to his wife, her eyes sliding to the left to silently give Joel’s position away. Her eyes met yours as she continued to face the door, before turning back to her husband as she calmly rocked in the chair with her hands in her pockets. Threatened but at ease, assuming you both to be decent people. To not harm her or what was hers. Your gut twisted at the faith she put in both you and Joel, seeing the desperation for appeasement and an avoidance of true violence. You wouldn’t hurt her, hurt them. Everyone seemed to sense it, only threats were dealt with violence, and she was not one.
Turning back to the door, the man gently placed his bow down atop a table and began to unzip his outermost coat.
“And the gun,” Joel approached, revealing himself full to the older couple. Voice steady but quiet, demanding.
“Who’re you?”
“Just someone passin’ through.” He strutted confidently beside the woman still rocking gently away, his voice giving away his native land, ascent thicker in the wake of another sleepless night.
“Take the gun out, two fingers only, put it outta reach.”
The man complied, with an exasperated expression at the brashness Joel was speaking with.
“Why didn’t you shoot ‘im?”
“The gun’s all the way over there.” Was her simple answer and you felt a smile pull at your lips, the display pulling at your heart. “He didn’t hurt me, by the way.”
“Yeah, I got eyes.”
A few steps further into the room brought the map and abandoned bowls from an offering of soup to the man’s attention.
“You made ‘im soup?”
“Yeah, I did. It’s cold out.” The man’s only response was a grunt as he settled into a chair across the small table from her. Joel’s head shifted to the side slightly, and you took the signal to move in front of the door.
The man’s attention turned to you, gazing at you over his shoulder.
“Well, aren’t you a quiet thing-“
“I’m lookin’ for my brother.” Joel took over the situation, his voice cutting off any further conversation between you and the couple. Letting them know that he was the one in charge, the one who would be asking the questions and controlling the conversation.
A scoff sounded harsh into the air as the old man removed his cap, his silver hair on display now in the comfort and warmth of his home.
“Well, I ain’t seen him.”
“I haven’t told you what he looks like.” Joel’s tone was hard, though you could see how tired he was, his eyes not holding any of the weight his shoulders seemed to as he deflated. Unable to keep up the rouse, unable to not let the doubt begin to slip in. The endless days out in the below freezing tundra finally wearing him down.
“He look anythin’ like you?”
“A bit.”
“Then I ain’t seen him.”
“They’ve got a girl with them.” The woman spoke up, eyes shifting up toward the second landing and giving Ellie’s hiding spot away. You could see her easily from you spot by the door, the way her brow furrowed much like Joel’s at the woman’s easy give up of her presence.
Apparently sensing how calm everything was, Ellie took that as her opportunity to reveal herself.
“Can I come down?” She called from the upstairs, causing you to close your eyes in exasperation of her lack of patience. Joel, similarly, exasperated, turned his attention from the man he kept his gun trained on and looked toward the stairs with a mile glare.
“No,” His demand turned into a calling of her name as she moved and began to make her way down the stairs with loud steps.
“Ooh-wa. A woman and a girl, family man.” The old couple shared a quiet laugh at the quickly shifting interaction. No longer tense, but something else.
“What did I just say?” Joel posed toward her as she came to stand in the space between you both, blocking the stairs from view with her small form as she brandished her own gun.
“Joel, come on, they’re like a thousand.”
“Who’s this little psycho?”
“Never mind her.” Joel shifted forward, using his free hand to push the map on the table closer to the man whose focus was shifted toward Ellie. “I need you to tell us where we are.”
“If you got a map, why you lost?” You could hear the smile in the man’s voice that he was doing nothing to hide, finding amusement despite the barrel of a rifle aimed at him and three strangers in his home.
“Must’ve missed all the street signs in the enormous fucking forest.” Ellie snapped, trying to put on a front to imitate Joel, her voice pitched lower and hard. No sign of the girl who told puns in her as you looked over at her with a sharp flare of frustration.
“Ellie!” You reprimanded, unsure where this unwavering lack of manners came from, hoping it wasn’t her way of displaying confidence in the face of someone who had done nothing to warrant such harsh language aimed at them. Anyone else wouldn’t be so kind or forgiving. “Compose yourself.”
“Ho-ly.” The man’s eyes met yours as you nodded a silent apology at him, moving across the space and coming to stand beside Ellie with a swat to her arm. Laughter bubbled up between the couple again, getting a kick out what was happening after being isolated for so long.
“We’re somewhere here. Where exactly?” Joel tried to get the conversation back on track, an agitated look tossed over to you both as he jabbed a finger at the map. “And the answer better be the same as your wife’s.”
“Did you tell him the truth?”
“Yeah.” She rocked gently in her place, looking for all the world like this was an everyday occurrence.
“Are you tellin’ me the truth?” That same fond smile pulled at your lips at the woman’s easy compliance to the question and Ellie shifted behind you slightly as she saw it, her body relaxing in response to your own ease.
The man glanced at you and Ellie, so close together before he leaned forward and pointed out exactly where his wife had on the map. Joel shared a look with you before holstering his gun and focused on the map fully.
“Well, you found a great place to hide, I guess.” Exasperation and exhaustion taking over him, he pressed a hand to his forehead as he roughly sat down in the chair beside him. Looking for all the world someone who was about to give up.
“Hide? Came here before you were born, sonny.”
Ellie moved to sit beside him, a stool operating as a makeshift side table the perfect spot for her as Joel rocked in his place, emotions riling him up in a way you had yet to see. His anxiety rolling off of him in palpable waves.
“Get the hell away from everybody.”
“I didn’t want to.” The woman added, sharing a look with you, the gleam in her eye telling a story you so desperately wanted to hear.
“Listen, I didn’t mean to upset you about your brother, but if you’ve come this far then you know what’s out there.” Joel’s pale glare, furrowed brow, prompted the man to speak on. “You seen Cody?”
“Yeah, got close enough. It’s crawling with infected.”
“Spores, too. But the weather seems to have killed that off for the time being.”
“Yeah, Laramie and Wind River Reservation. Anywhere people used to be, you can’t go there no more.”
“So you haven’t heard the name Tommy?”
“Nope.”
“What about the Fireflies?”
“We get those in the summer.”
“Not the bugs, the people.” Ellie snapped, though there wasn’t nearly as much heat behind her words this time. Mindful of the presence you exuded as you stood beside her.
“There are firefly people?”
You couldn’t help the chuckle that rumbled from your chest, joining in on the disbelieving laughter of the older couple.
“You got any advice on the best way West?”
“Yeah.” Suddenly serious, the man’s face shifted into something unreadable. Leaning forward to get all of Joel’s attention he spoke without a hint of the jovial tone he just had. “Go East.”
You swallowed down the spike of unease that settled over you, watching as he leaned forward to draw his finger over the map.
“But you never go past the river here. Ever.”
“What’s past the river, sir?” You cut Ellie off, knowing she was about to ask the same thing. You stepped forward, angling closer to him, wanting to understand everything they new about the land but afraid to ask. Afraid of the answers they had that would sever the last string of hope, of the mission Joel had set out on.
“Death.” The woman spoke, her eyes meeting yours. “We never seen who’s out there, but we see the bodies they leave behind. Some Infected, some not. If your brother’s West of the river, he’s gone.”
“You’re not gonna scare us.” Ellie spoke quietly, face solemn as the atmosphere of the room shifted.
“Scared them.” The woman nodded at you and then over to Joel beside her.
A beat passed before Joel reached for the map with harsh movements, folding it in his grip and then stood. You ushered Ellie to follow him, taking a moment to reach into you pack. You placed a small bundle of bandages on the table, locking eyes with both of them before speaking.
“There is medicine wrapped up here, please, take it as a thank you for your help. I’m sorry we had to brandish our weapons at you. Can’t be too careful these days.”
“A quiet, sweet little thing, aren’t you?” The man looked you over, though there was no threat or undertones in his eyes. “Take care of them, they need it.”
‘I’m trying my best, sir.” You turned to the woman one last time, hoping that the heartbreak didn’t show on your face. You wanted them to make it, to live out the rest of their lives in peace. “Ma’am, thank you for the soup.”
And with that you walked through the door and back out into the blinding landscape.
Joel was leaning heavily against a post of their fence line, one hand supporting him while the other was pressed tightly to his chest. Ellie was hovering close to him and speaking too fast for you to make out her words.
“I said I’m fine.” She looked back at her with a weird look, trying to display some sort of control, but he was still leaning heavily against the post. Her soft acquiescence pulling you behind them with quick steps.
“It’s just the…cold air all of a sudden.” He leaned over and looked down, his breathing labored and his body taut. A gentle hand on Ellie’s shoulder had her moving forward through the fence.
“All right, uh…so let’s go and find Tommy and the Fireflies.”
Joel stayed still, jumping slightly when you curled a hand over his shoulder.
“Hey, hey, it’s just me. It’s okay.”
“Of course it’s okay.” His tone shifted from quiet to harsh, furrowed brow and hard eyes turning to face you. He shrugged your hand from him with a rough movement and you curled it back to your side with a frown.
“Joel-“
“I said I’m fine!” He raised his voice and you shrunk back a few steps, not sure why he was suddenly so angry. The look in his eyes one you hadn’t seen since your shared time in Boston. At a loss for words, you only nodded, hoping he didn’t continue to yell. Your foot slipped on a patch of ice hidden underneath the snow and you let your body do so, looking up the small slope to Joel as he shifted the rifle from his shoulder and gripped it in front of him before following after Ellie. “Don’t need you trying to fix me when nothin’ is wrong.”
“It’s gonna be easy.” Ellie trilled, trying to control the situation as best she could despite how tense things were. “All we have to do is cross the River of Death.”
He didn’t look back as he caught up with her smaller form.
Tumblr media
“The river of death. Scary.” Ellie sardonically announced as the landscape opened up, the map in Joel’s pocket as he lead the way over the terrain. She stopped and loved over the fast moving line of water that weaved it’s way through the beautiful landscape. It had been a quiet day’s travel, Joel and Ellie having small pockets of conversation as they traded places leading. You stayed behind them, trying not to warrant another flare of Joel’s bitter anger.
“Don’t start.” He sidled up next to her, taking in the view while you hovered behind a few paces, feeling like an outsider. He didn’t so much as glance back at you, before speaking. Deciding.
“It’s too close to dark. There’s some caves along the river. We’ll set up camp there, cross in the mornin’.”
“Good. I’m starving.” A pause. “Should’ve stolen two rabbits.”
“We can get our own rabbits.” He almost scoffed, worried about how she was thinking of stealing before trying to provide for herself. Or that he would let her starve.
“You gonna teach me how?”
“Just keep movin’.”
And with that they both began to walk again, seemingly forgetting about you trailing behind them.
As the fire crackled on, rabbit consumed, Joel was busy duct tapping his damaged boots. The sound a background noise as you gazed up at the night sky, a haze of green lights shining among the stars. It was beautiful but it did nothing to soothe the anxiety thrumming through your veins. Something was about to change, the air around you drenched in the inevitable. The hairs on the back of your neck and all along your arms prickled with every howl of the wind and shuffling sound of an animal nearby.
The whistle Joel let out had you jumping in your seat, but you didn’t bother to turn around, back to the set up of the night. You knew it was for Ellie, to garner her attention where she gazed up at the sky in the same fashion as you, but she had scaled the outcropping around the mouth of the cave.
“Come down from there. You’re gonna break your neck.”
“Bean said it was okay. As long as I was careful.”
He didn’t respond, opting to pull a flash out from his jacket’s inner pocket. Your brow furrowed as you heard the sound of it clinking against his zipper. You hadn’t seen him swipe that from the older couple’s cabin. But he hadn’t had it before.
You blanked out, thoughts humming, eyes unfocused as you stared deep into the fire. The flames taking you back to when you had burned down your own cabin, unable to stomach the thought of living out your days with the buried corpses of what was supposed to be your future.
Screams echoed in your ears, plaguing you more and more as winter continued. The snow flashing from pristine white to red with every other blink. Footsteps deep in the snow, following a man who was showing his cracks much the same way you were. You gripped your mostly healed arm tight with your right hand, nails digging into the flesh there as you had snuck it into the sleeve, gloves tucked into a pocket.
The buzz of a quiet conversation quieting had you blinking your eyes back into focus, the fire lower now.
“What about you, Bean?” You didn’t let your surprise at being addressed show, but the feeling of your nails digging deeper into your skin was an all too real reaction.
“Hmm?” Shifting up from the fire, you looked over at Ellie, her face bright in the night. Small smile on her thin lips as she looked back at you. The weight of Joel’s gaze was heavy, making your nerves twitch and you were sure he was reading you as well as you could read him when his own resolve slipped.
“What would you do?”
“What would I…do?”
“If this all wasn’t going on.” The teenager waved her hands around, stray strands of her hair peeking out from her beanie wafting up with the action.
“I want a nice little cottage, protected deep in the woods. Maybe a garden to plant coffee and cultivate it.” The answer was quick, but quiet. Honest. That’s all you wanted now, a place to hunker down and be left alone.
“Coffee beans for Bean.” She chuckled before realization dawned on her. You hadn’t mentioned either of them, saying what you wanted. She took a breath before she breathed out her hesitant question, unable to shake the feeling that everything was not as okay as it seemed. She had to have picked up on the way you and Joel had grown quieter and more agitated since leaving the cabin. “…alone?”
“Yeah, kid, alone.” Your smile was sad as you looked down at where your boots stretched out in front of you toward the crackling fire. You could feel both of their eyes heavy on you as you fell silent, closing yourself off from them once again despite the hesitantly jovial air that had begun to form around the makeshift campsite. Shifting, you stood from your spot and walked over to your pack, unbuckling the sleeping bag from the bottom of it. Laying it out, you settled into it underneath the overhang of the outcropping of rock that had been picked out for the night.
Snuggling down into it, you heard them talk softly to each other for a little while longer, comfortable silences falling every so often.
“Dream of sheep ranches on the moon.”
“With a three-room cottage.”
“Yeah, kid, with a three-room cottage.”
Tumblr media
Steps as quiet as possible, you glanced at the map in your hands and then toward the bridge you could see in the distance. The river was still like glass, nothing but the wind breaking the surface and causing it to ripple every so often before it stilled once again. The bridge looked untouched, no visible disturbances in the snow blanketed ground around it or along the expanse of it. But it was a sign of something, of what was once. Blinking against the bright white of everything around, your vision clouded as snowflakes gathered on your lashes. The feeling of unease settled over you as you heard the call of a geese on the other bank. The only sound you had heard since taking up watch a few hours ago when sleep evaded you. It was too quiet out here.
Dread settled in like rocks in your stomach, throat constricted as the old couple’s words sounded in your mind. Turning back around, you rushed to the cave that had been used as shelter the night before.
“I’m responsible for you, okay?” Joel’s voice was audible as you neared the small camp.
“Then don’t fall asleep.” Ellie rebutted. “I was quiet, I checked my six, I looked for tracks. I found the high ground and I kept watch. Like you taught me too. Bean made sure to double check it all before she went off. What can I say, man? I’m a natural.”
He mumbled something and motioned for her to hand over the rifle, turning his attention to your approaching form. At the snap of a bush, the rifle was raised, his eyes not recognizing you through the haze of the falling snow. You quickly raised your hands up into the air and announced yourself, heart thudding.
“Where the hell did you go off to, huh? Supposed to be keeping an eye on her.” His voice was anything but relieved, holding anger and something else you couldn’t quite place.
“Woah, hey, I was checking map, I think we got turned around somehow. Bridge to help up cross the river.”
“You’re supposed to stay put. No one goes off alone.”
“I’ve traveled alone before; I can handle myself.”
“You took the only map, what if you got taken down or lost or fell in the god damn river?”
“I didn’t, I was just trying-“
“Trying to get us all killed, is what you were doing. Exposing us on your little scouting mission.”
“Look, I don’t know what the fuck has gotten into you lately, but we are all tired. We are all feeling the same way, Joel. Do not raise your voice at me. Please.”
He took a deep breath, eye clenching shut. When he opened them back up the gun shifted to his shoulder. He nodded at you in silent agreement. Then at Ellie.
“Wake me up next time.” He admonished; tone not nearly as hostile or frustrated as a few seconds ago.
“Yes, sir.” Ellie tried to lighten the tense atmosphere with a quick of her lips.
“Copy that.” You nodded back at him, not liking the way it was getting harder and harder to communicate with him. He was taking the lead more, making routes on his own more, taking on the burden of wandering through the endless landscape in a way that was hurting him more than helping the group. That kind of responsibility taking its toll on him as the days continued on.
Tumblr media
The bridge was larger as you stood at one end of it, facing the backdrop of large snowcapped mountains behind it. More wilderness, more unknown, more unseen threats.
You were trailing behind Ellie, the formation second nature now. Joel in front, rifle at the ready. Ellie in the middle, her hands at her sides, gun easily accessible in her pocket. You behind them both, keeping Ellie’s smaller form protected as much as possible.
Conversation flowed between them as you now walked along the river, the trees dense on the other bank, the one you were traveling along exposed. It made you uneasy, that feeling having settled into your bones from this morning. Cresting over a large hill, the sound of rushing water was suddenly loud, having been so low a hum it didn’t register until now. The snow was mostly cleared on the other side of the rather blue river, the structure of a-
“Dam.” Ellie announced, playing on the double meaning of the word easily.
“You’re no Will Livingston.”
“Yeah, yeah, but who is?”
“So that made electricity?”
“Yeah.” He looked over at her, brow already furrowed. “Don’t ask me. I don’t have a clue.”
“Joel…the dam…it’s running.” You stepped forward, breaking into the bubble the two of them had unknowingly created.
“The water wouldn’t stop running through it, even if it was abandoned.”
“No…but that doesn’t explain the lack of snow all around it. Almost like it’s been cleared.”
“Just didn’t snow as hard in this area, nothing stuck.” He dismissed you, moving on.
Ellie was watching the movement of the river’s current, having stopped ahead of you both and you quickened your pace to catch up to Joel. Reaching out a hand to hook around his upper arm. He let you turn him, a frown on his features.
“Joel, please, this doesn’t feel right. Between the sparse snow despite the storm last night and how quiet it is, something-“
“Everythin’ is fine, you’re reading too much into it.”
“Remember when you trusted me? Heeded my instincts as well as your own?” You snapped, roughly letting go of his arm and shoving him back. “Remember when we were equals?”
“You’ve been out of it more often than not, seeing things where there isn’t anything. You double take at every turn of direction, eyes glazing over and losing focus at night when we settle. Jumping at every little sound in the night.”
“So have you, I can tell when you’re breathing heavier, overrun by anxiety.”
“I’m fine, but you aren’t. Not since the cabin.”
“I’m fine, Joel. Just like you’re fine, right?” You used his own words against him, hoping that they stung him when they landed. They did, you could see the shift behind his eyes from frustration to acceptance.
“I’m not gonna apologize, but, darlin’…you really have been out of it more than here with us. I’m just…I’m trying here, okay?”
“I’m trying too, it’s…it’s this time of year, it’s harder. But I’m trying, Joel, I swear to you I am. When did I let anyone get the drop on me when it was avoidable? When did I failed to get Ellie to safety? When have I failed to reconnect after getting separated. Please, Joel, I’m trying.”
His broad chest expanded with a deep breath; hands held out to you in a silent offering of peace.
“I’m just picking up the slack, trying to keep us all alive, I didn’t-“ His words were fast, twang thick as he tried to back track. His trauma showed in ways different than your own, something he still had to learn about you, learn to help you with. Return the favor of you allowing him to work through his own.
“We’re fine, okay? I just…I need a minute, please. I just need a moment to myself.”
You stepped toward him to grip one of his offered hands with both of yours, cradling it. Looking up at him, you could see that he was as worked up as you were. Both of you feeding off of the other’s intense emotions in the worst way. He slowly lifted his other hand to caress your cheek.
“We’re okay, yeah?”
“Yeah.” You untangled from him, offering him a wan smile, and walked away, gazing out over the river.
After a beat, you began to follow behind Ellie as Joel continued on at a slower pace.
“Look at that river. It’s crazy blue.” She fell silent for a moment, looking down at her boots as she thought something over.
“Hey Joel…what is this is the River of Death?”
You both paused at her words, realizing that this was in fact a secondary river. You looked up and locked eyes with the man as he turned, hair ruffling in the breeze. The map was quickly pulled from his coat pocket, and he unfolded it as you closed the distance, coming up close behind them both, head on a swivel as he tried to center your current position.
The whiny of a horse had you bumping into Ellie. Too late to do anything about it or even announce it as the sound of hoofs thundering across the fallen snow blanketed all around you assaulted your senses.
You could feel it reverberate through your entire body, teeth clenched tight and eyes wide as they took in the fast-approaching group cresting over the hills of the landscape.
Joel scrambled for Ellie, pulling her behind him. He chanced a look over at you, your eyes meeting for a brief moment before you were surrounded on all sides by people on horses, two dogs pacing around them all with the river’s bluffed bank behind you all.
Joel reached for her hand and she reached for yours, scrambling to huddle close and maneuver with a dash that wasn’t quick enough. Allowing for the group of saddled horses to surround you on all sides.
“Get behind me.” He ushered, realizing it was too late to run or even think of making a getaway with the ten or so people now aiming their guns on you in a misshapen circle.
Hands going up in surrender, you didn’t dare close your eyes as you took in a deep breath of the stinging cold air.
“We’re not lookin’ for any trouble,” Joel was calm despite the buzz of adrenaline that was lighting you up, no doubt mirroring his own. “We’re just passin’ through.”
“Drop the guns.” The demand was calm, controlled. “And the blade.”
With slow movements, you removed the colt from the harness inside your largest coat, the shing of the blade following the thump of it to the ground.
Eyes moving from each imposing figure, you noticed that they were all armed with rifles. The glint of secondary handguns on their hips. Every single person was armed to the teeth and concealing their faces with masks made of scarves, bandanas, and scraps of clean fabric.
“You,” The same man spoke to Ellie, his eyes trained on her. “Take five steps back.”
“And you as well.” A woman spoke to you, her eyes calculating. Tracking the way you were scrutinizing the entire group with quick glances all around you.
“How ‘bout we just talk this through?” Joel attempted to bridge the gap. But they weren’t having any of it, cutting him off before he could even get the words out.
“How ‘bout you shut the fuck up?”
“Okay, easy.”
Glancing down at Ellie he assured her she was going to be okay, the hope that they wouldn’t harm a child allowing the words to sound genuine. He glanced over his shoulder at you, paces behind them both having already heeded their commands.
“You been near Infected?”
“There’s no Infected out here.” Your voice was strong despite feeling anything but. Overpowered, out manned and out gunned. Not letting it show that you were absolutely terrified for the two people spaced out in front of you.
“The hell there ain’t.” The man argued with you, tearing apart your feeble attempt at complying with them but also sticking your own ground.
A barking dog was lead out from behind the man, as he declared it the last chance for a swift death.
“If you’ve been infected, he will smell it, and he will rip you up.”
“Fuck.” You muttered under your breath; eyes trained on the back of Ellie’s head. What if they could smell the dormant cells in her body? Suddenly, it looked like this wasn’t going to end well at all.
The dog was going insane, barking up a storm with intermittent growls from deep in its ribcage. Struggling against the leash it was being held onto with. But it wagged its tail as it loosened and approached Joel. You could see the increase of his breathing from your spot, though the man hadn’t been near Infected since Cody. A tense moment passed as it deemed him safe after sniffing around him and standing up on its hind legs to get a sense of him too close for comfort.
“Like I said, we’ll just move on.”
“Now the woman.” Dogs always made you nervous, having been on the receiving end of a rather bad bite at a young age. But you kept your eyes open as it approached you and did the same inspection. A deep breath in, held the entire time, and exhaled only when the dog was backing trotting away from you. You could only hope Ellie remained as calm as it cautiously approached her, growling as it did so.
Growls turned to happy yips as Ellie giggled, the two finding peace as she pet the suddenly friendly animal. You head knocked back your head as you sighed in relief. The man speaking for the group was smiling, you could see it in the way the wrinkles around his eyes creased despite the mask. Much like when Joel allowed himself to relax enough to do the same around the fire at night.
“You just bought yourself ten more seconds. What are you doin’ out here?”
“I’m just lookin’ for my brother.” The truth, you hadn’t known he was going to say it. But you felt your heart soften as he did. “That’s all, nothin’ more.”
The woman who had been watching you pushed forward and demanded his name, gaze locked on his.
“Joel.”
A/N: I'm gonna be honest, i lost my editing steam about halfway through Rowan's second POV, so past there we're just going to ignore any errors due to my impatience. Thank you so much for your patience, this chapter has been sitting in my brain for a long time. It's something other than poorly edited
~~~~~
Aelin was so tired she didn’t know how she was conscious or functioning. The inevitable had happened, her precious little baby was sick. And she was left floundering.
It had started out fairly mild. Just a little bit of a runny nose and some irritability. The first few days had been next to nothing and Aelin had been able to cope fairly well. She was a little sleep deprived and a little anxious, but that was all and overall it hadn’t been too bad. And then Elsie didn’t get better, in fact she got worse, and everything flipped on its head. Now Elsie was coughing, often wheezing, a low appetite and a fever just to round it out. Aelin was doing her best and she managed to get Elsie to take some pain relievers that helped the baby sleep. The real issue was getting Elsie to eat enough, she was still only breastfed but Aelin fed her whenever she wanted, no matter when. It just felt like it wasn’t enough.
It had been two days of Aelin barely sleeping while fretting over her fussy daughter. Every cough and whimper had her nerves on edge, as did trying to placate to Elsie’s every whim. Aelin was battling this fight on her own. Her parents were on a business trip in Rifthold and she didn’t want to risk spreading the infection to Rue, and Korby was already sick. So Aelin would soldier on, in the trenches and on the front lines.
Seeing her daughter sick was heartbreaking. It left her with a deep feeling of helplessness, because at the very heart of it there was nothing Aelin could do to ease her baby’s suffering. Nothing seemed to please her and the best Aelin could do was hold her just about every minute of the day. When Elsie wasn’t attached to her mother she cried like her own heart was breaking. Aelin hadn’t showered in a good 36 hours and sustenance came from whatever she could make and eat one handed.
They were currently on Aelin’s bed with the pillows stacked so that she could lean back and rest Elsie on her chest so they were both mostly upright. Elsie fussed, fighting sleep, her little whimpers sounding congested. Aelin knew her daughter needed rest, it would be the fastest way to get better. A nap would do them both some good in fact.
“Come on, darling,” Aelin whispered, eyes closed like all her energy diverted to keep her mouth moving. “Just sleep, even for a little bit.”
Elsie protested, rubbing her face on her mother’s shirt, no doubt getting drool and snot everywhere. Aelin didn’t care, dirty clothes weren’t a concern right now. Keeping her eyes closed Aelin started to hum and there was a moment of quiet before Elsie started fussing again. She changed to singing You Are My Sunshine softly. That one almost worked but Elsie’s contentment only lasted about a minute. And then a song came into her head at random, and Aelin was singing it before she even realised what she was doing.
Beautiful Dreamer, wake unto me,
Starlight and dewdrops are waiting for thee;
Sounds of the rude world heard in the day,
Lull'd by the moonlight have all passed away!
Beautiful dreamer, queen of my song,
List while I woo thee with soft melody;
The song was one Rowan used to sing all the time, one that his mother used to sing to him if he was to be believed. Aelin’s voice was weak and uneven, but she did her best. This song sounded better when Rowan sang it, his accent adding a bit of whimsy, almost making it sound like some kind of faerie lullaby.
Gone are the cares of life's busy throng
Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me!
Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me!
Beautiful dreamer, out on the sea,
Mermaids are chanting the wild Lorelei;
Over the stream let vapours are borne,
Waiting to fade at the bright coming morn.
Beautiful dreamer, beam on my heart,
E'en as the morn on the stream let and sea;
Then will all clouds of sorrow depart,
Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me!
Elsie went quiet and Aelin let out a shaky sigh of relief. Finally, a reprieve. Aelin sang it again and Elsie stayed quiet, and half way through the third time the baby was asleep. Too tired to care, Aelin didn’t bother trying to open her eyes knowing that sleep was hovering over her. It was barely a minute later and she was asleep.
Something pulled Aelin to consciousness, not even realising how deep of a sleep she had fallen into. Within a few heart startling moments she would realise it was mother’s intuition. Elsie was still on her chest, awake and in distress. Her breathing was rapid and Aelin was sweating herself from how hot the infant was. Aelin’s body reacted first—tipping forward and cradling Elsie in her arms so that she could see her better.
Elsie’s breathing was deep and rapid and she was looking pale. One of her fists waved about, knocking the side of her head and ears. And then Elsie coughed, an awful sound that had Aelin’s insides twisting with panic. Her baby was unwell, severely unwell.
Aelin fumbled for her phone, her hand shaking from panic and exhaustion. She couldn’t manage the string of numbers so she went to contacts instead, tapping frantically on the one that simply read: Mum.
“Hello, hello,” Evalin said cheerfully, her face appearing on the screen.
“Mum, what do I do?” Aelin asked.
Concern flooded her mother’s features. “What do you mean?”
“She’s breathing so hard and her temperature is so high,” Aelin said, her voice heightened with her increasing alarm. “I just fell asleep for a second, just a second.”
Aelin was aware she was reaching hysterics but she couldn’t help it. Panic well and truly had set in and the overwhelming need to protect had taken over, except there was no physical threat. There was nothing she could do.
“Show me what her breathing is like,” Evalin said, the tension in her voice clear but she was trying to stay calm.
“It’s ah… it’s fast,” Aelin flipped the phone to show Elsie. “And she’s coughing and the pain medicine must have worn off because her fever is back.”
Elsie’s breath caught and she coughed, disrupting her breathing more. Two sets of worried turquoise eyes met each other through the phone screen. Aelin broke.
“Do I take her to the doctor or the hospital? How am I supposed to drive? I can’t watch her if I’m driving, what if she stops breathing?”
“Oh my sweethearts,” Evalin sounded devastated. “I’m sure she’ll be okay but I think you should take her to the hospital.”
Aelin sobbed, she couldn’t help it. She tried to keep it together but exhaustion and fear were overwhelming her—she was so alone right now.
“Aelin, don’t drive. Call someone to come get you,” Evalin said.
 But Aelin’s brain was scrambled, no one immediately came to her. “Who?”
“Aedion, he’s the closest.”
“Yeah, okay,” Aelin said a bit weakly.
“Call him and then call me back,” Evalin said. “I’ll stay on with you until he gets there.”
Aelin hung up, then called Aedion straight away. She was holding her breath until she got an answer. Somehow she managed to be coherent and Aedion promised to be out the door moments later. Aelin was about to call her mother back when Elsie had a coughing fit, lasting so long that the baby vomited. It covered both of them and Aelin swore under her breath as she tried to contain the vomit and make sure Elsie was all right.
Elise cried and cried, her pain and discomfort obvious. Aelin tried to comfort her as she bundled Elsie up the best she could and headed for the bathroom, snatching a change of baby clothes from a clean washing basket on the way. There wasn’t time for a shower and Aelin didn’t want to risk the chill Elsie might get after. Aelin stripped the soiled clothes off both of them and threw them in the bathtub and then yanked down a towel to give Elsie a wipe down before dressing her in leggings and a long sleeved t-shirt. The crying hadn’t stopped and Aelin felt tears gathering in her own eyes. The helplessness was overwhelming.
“Aelin.” Aedion was standing in the doorway, his face tight as he took in the scene.
“She’s sick,” Aelin said, sniffling. Her brain was fried and she couldn’t think of anything else to say.
“Yeah, poor thing.” Aedion’s tone was soothing, low and soft.
Aelin stood, keeping a safe hold on her daughter. “We gotta go.”
Aedion stopped her with a hand on her shoulder. “Hold on—’’
What was he doing, didn’t he realise they had to leave? Now. Aelin was about to verbally protest when Aedion gave her a look that had her biting back the words.
“You don’t have a shirt on, and you’ll need your wallet and the nappy bag.”
Aelin had been so concerned about getting Elsie dressed after the vomiting that she hadn’t got a change of clothes for herself. All Aelin wore was a crop bra and pyjama pants. She couldn’t go to the hospital like this.
“Pass her to me and go get what you need,” Aedion said, holding out his arms to take the baby.
Aelin nodded, passing Elsie over. “Clothes, wallet, bag.”
Over the crying Aedion repeated, “Clothes. Wallet. Bag.”
Aedion left the bathroom, murmuring to Elsie as she cried, but Aelin forced her brain to focus on what she needed to do now. She needed clothes, and her wallet, and stuff for Elsie. Three things and then they could go. In her bedroom Aelin threw on a pair of leggings and the first clean t-shirt she could find, also grabbing a sweatshirt because hospitals were always cold. Next she darted off to Elsie’s room, stuffing more clothes and nappies and a pacifier into the bag. All that was left was her wallet that was on the kitchen counter.
She found Aedion pacing between the living area and the edge of the kitchen, whispering to Elsie. Aelin was so focused on getting out the door that she didn’t notice the quiet at first. Her daughter was still whimpering softly but the desperate crying had stopped. It irrationally hurt to see Elsie settled when Aelin had been trying so hard—for days. Aedion’s eyes met hers over the top of Elsie’s head and he gave her a weak smile.
Aelin didn’t return it, too single minded to sort through her feelings. So she just grabbed her wallet from the bench and she was done. “Ready.”
There was a wordless agreement that Aedion would keep Elsie, at least until they got to the car. Elsie was content for the time being and there was no use disturbing her more than she needed to be, even though it caved in Aelin’s chest a little to keep the distance. Blessedly the elevator was quick to arrive and there were no stops down to the garage parking lot. Aedion unlocked the car, but Aelin opened the door and he eased Elsie into the car seat. As soon as the connection to her uncle’s chest was lost the crying started again. Each second seemed to drag on, and for a few of them Aelin waited just holding the door. When Elsie’s cry broke into a screech it kicked Aelin into gear and she was darting around to the other side of the car and climbed into the back seat.
“I’m here, baby girl. I’m here,” Aelin tried to soothe and Aedion finished up with the buckle. Elsie’s eyes peeked over at her, her bottom lip pouting. “Just hold on, we’re going. You’ll feel better soon.
The drive consisted of Aelin repeating assurances over and over again, words of comfort and keeping her hands on Elsie so she knew her mother was right there with her. When they got to the hospital everything passed in a blur. Aedion dropped her at the doors and Aelin hurried with Elsie through the doors. As a sick infant Elsie was seen within minutes.
Aelin felt like she was in a limbo as she waited for Elsie to be assessed. To help with her initial comfort they gave Elsie oxygen and put a monitor on her foot. Next it was quickly determined that she was at risk of dehydration so they attached an IV too. That was traumatic, and Aelin thanked the gods that Aedion was by her side when that happened. He was able to hold Aelin’s shaking hand and help keep Elsie still while the nurse injected the needle in her hand. Aelin wasn’t letting her daughter go, even if she barely had the strength.
It was nearly another hour before they got the full diagnosis. The doctor had introduced herself as Sorsha and Aelin had to hand it to her, she had an excellent bedside manner. She was patient with both Elsie and her mother while the stress was high. Her hazel eyes were kind and sympathetic, but she was assertive and clear every step of the way.
Sorsha delivered the news on Elsie’s diagnosis herself. She had RSV, which led to an ear infection and bronchitis. Aelin’s heart seized at the words but Sorscha assured her that it sounded scarier than it was. All three were common and treatable, and it was all caught early enough that there were no serious repercussions. And on top of that they had discovered there was a slight structural abnormality in the tubes that connected her ears to her sinuses which had been the cause of the ear infection. It had to do with drainage and bacteria, but Aelin had been too focused on fixing it that most of what was said went over her head. She was told Elsie would most likely grow out of the ear problems, she would just be more susceptible to more infections until she did. The doctor commended Aelin on her actions and left her to process what she’d just heard.
Aelin had done the right thing, Elsie was okay— just needed to be monitored.
They were moved from the ER department to a room in the children’s ward of the hospital because they would be staying for at least a few days. Aelin barely left Elsie’s bedside, and quickly fell back into the habit of barely sleeping. There was a reclining armchair for her to sleep in, a consideration made for those parents that would be staying with their children. But the constant beeping and noise of the hospital kept her awake, as did the anxiety over her daughter’s welfare. It didn’t help that every time Aelin started to drift off she was graced with dreams of Elsie screaming, or crying, or vomiting. She would startle awake, unsure of what was reality and what wasn’t, only to find Elsie sleeping soundly.
Aelin’s mother arrived around lunchtime on their first full day in the hospital, and it was only then that she managed to get a solid amount of sleep knowing that someone else had eyes on Elsie. She was unfortunately woken up about an hour later by a nurse coming in and doing another check. The consensus was that Elsie wasn’t declining, but she still needed to stay in for observation.
Evalin went out for food, which Aelin only picked at until visiting hours were over. Elsie’s condition had kind of plateaued instead of getting better. Everyone kept saying at least she wasn’t getting worse. What ate away at Aelin was that maybe she hadn’t done enough, that she hadn’t seen the signs earlier and acted too late. Maybe all this could have been avoided if she had been more vigilant. Aelin had been hanging by a thread so she hadn’t noticed how serious Elsie’s condition was. To punish herself further Aelin had googled the what ifs in those hours that she couldn’t sleep and was berating herself for letting it get this far to begin with.
Another night in the hospital was spent watching Elsie as she slept, sometimes fitfully in between medications. They gave her doses to keep her comfortable but it couldn’t take all her ailments away. The tiny girl still woke up in distress, crying from pain or discomfort from the IV, or coughing and waking up in an unfamiliar bed. Aelin was doing everything she could to make sure Elsie was comfortable and content. But it wasn’t enough.
A new day started and Aelin was still staring at her daughter, cataloguing everything. Her breathing was easier, but it still shuddered every once and a while. There was a slight decline in the frequency of the coughing fits and blessedly they deemed that Elsie was eating enough that she was unhooked from the IV, temporarily at least.
Evalin was their visitor today and had taken it upon herself to fill everyone in with the updates, using the group chat on Aelin’s phone. Lorcan was checking in incessantly, because guilt was riding him too. Unbeknown to everyone Korbin had RSV, and yes, it was the consensus that was where the sickness had come from. Elide and Lorcan had kept him home instead of coming to dinner that night, but it seemed that Lorcan had been the one to pass it on to Elsie. He felt awful and had sent Aelin numerous apologies, he even went as far as calling which was all but unheard of from him. Aelin told him it wasn’t his fault, reciting the statistics of how common infections were this time of year. It was winter, it was cold, people got sick.
All her friends were rallying to Aelin’s side, offering any and every kind of help they could—mainly in the offering of food to keep the visitors down in the hospital room. Her mother was in charge of crowd control, Evalin was a pro at managing people and telling them when to do things. That was probably the reason why the next guest arrived.
“Hey,” Fenrys said softly from the doorway.
Aelin nearly jumped despite the non-startling care he had taken. “Hey, Fen.”
“I’ve got some snacks,” he said, holding up a bag as he walked into the room. “How’s she doing?”
Aelin looked back at Elsie, who was sleeping. “She’s doing okay. Getting better.”
“That’s good,” Fenrys said.
Fenrys drifted over to where Evalin sat by the window, passing over the food and chatting quietly. Aelin didn’t bother to try and decipher what was being said, the beeping of Elsie’s monitor was too loud. As were the thoughts tumbling around in her head.
“Go home, Aelin,” Evalin said, snapping Aelin out of her trance. “She’s okay, I’ll be right here.”
“I can’t,” Aelin replied.
“You can,” Evalin’s voice was a little firmer. “Have a shower, get some clean clothes. I won’t leave her side, I promise.”
Aelin looked up to her mother’s face, seeing the honesty there. If she promised not to leave Elsie’s side, Aelin believed her. It would be hard but Aelin knew it was the right thing to do. She’d been in these clothes for two days and she hadn’t done more than wash her face.
“I’ll drive you, come on,” Fenrys offered.
Fenrys dropping by with food had truly been divine intervention or very purposeful planning. Aelin supposed it might be the latter. She might have been able to take her mother’s car, but she wasn’t too confident in her driving right now. With Elsie sleeping and Aelin didn’t want to wake her but she couldn't leave without pressing the softest of kisses to her daughter’s head.
On the way out to the car Aelin stopped by the nurse’s station just to let them know what was happening and that she would be back as soon as they could. They nodded along and promised to ring if anything occurred while she was out. When they undoubtedly saw the colour drain from Aelin’s face they told her nothing would, because Elsie was doing fine. It still left Aelin’s stomach in a tight knot.
Fenrys led her out to his car and opened the door for her. Aelin fingers drummed on her thigh as she waited for him to get in. The quicker they left, the quicker she could get back. The usually talkative man was silent on the drive back to her apartment and Aelin wasn’t sure if it was a blessing or a curse. She didn’t have the energy for conversation but the silence also left her alone with her thoughts. They swirled inside her mind, building and inflating into what felt like a treacherous storm.
“Want me to come up?” Fenrys offered as he yanked on the handbrake.
“Um,” Aelin's brain was foggy. “If you want?”
Fenrys looked at her for a moment and then made his decision. “I’ll come up.
As soon as they were out of the car Aelin had her keys in her hand, ready and waiting to get her to her apartment. Then it was just the habitual ride up the elevator and walk down the hallway.
Being inside her apartment had Aelin relaxing, even if it was just by the smallest amount. She wanted a shower, maybe some food, but then she found she couldn’t move from where she stood in front of her couch. Aelin’s tumultuous emotions were winning, try as she might she couldn’t hold them at bay any longer. She wrapped her arms around her body as the last defence of keeping herself together. It failed and a sob tore out of her before she could stop or flee to where no one could see her long held in breakdown.
“Aelin,” Fenrys said tentatively. She didn’t answer, she just cried harder.
Fenrys was moving closer and a little voice in the back of Aelin’s head told her to stop crying, wipe her face and smile. But she was tired and sad, her daughter was sick in the hospital and it was all her fault.
“Hey, come here.”
Arms that weren’t hers wrapped around her and Aelin was pressed against a hard chest. She let it happen, accepting the small gesture of comfort. Tears soaked Fenrys’ shirt, but he didn’t seem to mind, he just kept holding her until she was the one to call it. Aelin was embarrassed at how long it took her to calm down, and even then she couldn’t stop tears from gathering and falling down her cheeks.
“I’m okay, Fen,” Aelin murmured, not pulling away just yet though. “Sorry about your shirt.”
“I don’t mind,” Fenrys said. “You wanna talk about it?”
“I—” the words were choked on a sob. “This is my fault.”
“What? No.” Fenrys pulled back enough so that he could look down at her. “This is not your fault.”
Those words meant nothing, guilt and despair was all consuming. “It is. Because I am not enough for her. I let it go too far, I should have taken her to the doctor or the hospital sooner, but I was just so tired and I have no idea what I’m doing. Elsie is suffering because I am not enough. I am supposed to be everything that she needs and I failed her.”
“No, Aelin. You know that’s not true,” Fenrys said.
“It is. I should have seen the signs but—”
“Aelin, please listen to me,” Fenrys actually pushed Aelin back so that she could look her in the eyes. She couldn’t hold the eye contact, she turned away, eyes closing and squeezing more tears from her eyes. “Kids get sick, and you were everything Elsie needed. There is no doubt in my mind that you sacrificed just about all of yourself for her benefit. That was enough for her, but shit happens, things that are out of your control. That is what happened. Not you.
Aelin exhaled, her body shuddering as she tried to wrangle some control over her emotions. She risked a glance at Fenrys’ face. This man was known for his perpetual joking and troublemaking, seeing him so serious was odd but comforting.
“You are more than enough for Elsie,” he said. “You always will be. We’re all here for you, the both of you, but you are all she needs.”
“How did I mess up so badly then?” Aelin’s tears fell with a new fervour.
“Because you’re new to this and you did do the best that you could. And when you had to, you asked for help,” Fenrys told her. “And RSV is so common, it’s something that they say is only a matter of time.”
“How do you know that?” Aelin asked, dabbing her nose on her sleeve as she finally felt brave enough to step away.
“I did my research once your mum let us all know,” Fenrys replied. “She’s awesome by the way, real cool lady.”
“I’ll have to tell her you said that, she’ll be flattered.” Aelin felt a bit lighter.
“What makes you think I haven’t told her myself?” Fenrys said cheekily. That made Aelin laugh and he tapped a knuckle in her chin. “There we go.”
“That’s gross, Fen. Who knew it would take you hypothetically flirting with my mother to break me,” Aelin's voice was shaky with laughter and withheld tears.
“Had to get you to listen to me somehow,” Fenrys said with a genuine smile.
“Um, watch TV or whatever,” Aelin waved at the couch. “I shouldn’t be too long.”
“Is there anything I can do?”
That question threatened to trigger a new wave of tears. Aelin had always been too independent for her own good, the last few days had proven that. So not wanting to set off another round she declined and all but fled to the bathroom and showered. It felt amazing and she was more than refreshed when she stepped out onto the mat and grabbed her towel. It was then she noticed that the vomit covered clothes had been removed. Someone had been in and tidied up, and instead of feeling embarrassed she just felt gratitude.
Dressed and ready to go, Aelin did a quick check of her phone to see if there were any messages. Just one, from her mother, letting her know Elsie had woken up but was content. Aelin knew that would only be for the time being she would have to get back as soon as she could to prevent a monster meltdown. She also noticed that it was mid afternoon on a Tuesday—time and space had no relevance in the hospital.
Fenrys was sitting on her lounge and Aelin shot him the question her phone had triggered. “Shouldn’t you be at work?”
“Nope,” Fenrys said, not looking over right away. Like he needed a moment to form his single word answer.
“But, it’s a work day. Don’t tell me you took it off for me.” If he had… it was just something else that she would beat herself up over.
Fenrys now doubt sensed her rising panic as it was broadcasted across the room because he said without hesitation, “I quit. Finally.”
Aelin remembered something about a game company seeking him out, but as far as she knew he had stuck with Stone City. “You what?”
Slapping his hands on his things once, he stood from the couch. “Come on, let’s get you back before your mum eats all the good snacks.”
There was something more going on here, Aelin could feel it. But she definitely lacked the tact to get it out in the right way. So she just nodded and grabbed what she needed. They stayed silent until they got to the elevator, right up to when Aelin started to fidget again. Fenrys hip checked her, making her smile.
“Remember what I said, okay?”
Aelin turned so that she could face him, finding him looking quite serious but still with that underlying playfulness which she decided to take advantage of. “What exactly? You say a lot and most of it is straight bullshit.”
Fenrys raised his eyebrows at her, like that was the most preposterous thing he’d ever heard her say. But then made a show of contemplating the words, making Aelin smile.
“You may be mostly right,” he conceded. “But you are everything and more to Elsie. You will always be enough, don’t forget that.”
Those words were said with such sincerity that Aelin felt her frayed emotions rise up again. She nodded and then turned away before the tears could fall. Fenrys, being the decent guy that he was, pretended not to notice. Damn him and his unfailing charm because despite herself, Aelin might just be starting to believe him.
~~~~~
It had been an uneventful few days at work. The company was in their post Yulemas lull, giving all the employees a slight breather. All their clients had blown out their budgets in the lead up to the biggest commercial season of the year and were now recuperating and re-evaluating their next steps. So, all Rowan had to do was maintain contact and scope out new clients, wooing them through stories of successes from the past few months.
The wider office outside his door was fairly quiet as Rowan read the company email that went out everyday. It was full of information he already knew, most of which he had some hand in as part of his managerial role. Skimming it, Rowan assumed there was nothing he needed to take note of.
And then he almost missed a memo, it was so short and brief and he’d been intent only glancing over the words. But Rowan’s eyes caught on a familiar name and that was enough to give him pause and to give it the time of day. His eyes went a bit wider and he even went as far as checking his phone like the answer would appear. It didn’t, all he had were email notifications from clients.
Rowan sat back in his chair, reading over the memo again. Fenrys had left Stone City Advertising. There was no explanation, just a short note that he was leaving that was meant to notify everyone else that there was no point in contacting him. Rowan didn’t know why, but none of his friends had said a thing about it. That unsettled him, and it also made Rowan question why he wasn’t notified as part of his role as manager. He picked up his phone ready to send a text off to Lorcan to ask him about the sudden departure when there was a knock on his office door.
It was Dresenda, a new hire. Maeve’s assistants usually had a two year job life span before they started to look for employment elsewhere. Rowan liked his job well enough but he would never want that job. “Hey, Rowan. Maeve just got in and she wants to see you.”
“Thanks,” Rowan said, standing and slipping his phone back into his pocket.
Maeve had been over in Terrasen, wooing a high profile client and from how long she was gone, it seemed like some sight seeing as well. It would be bitterly cold there this time of year. The end of January into February was when winter sunk its claws in. Snow would cover the city for days, maybe weeks if they were lucky. In Doranelle the weather was milder all year round, snow was a rare sight here. Rowan loved the cold, it had made Terrasen feel like home in a way—like that climate was made for him. All things considered it certainly didn’t feel that way anymore.
It was irrelevant, he was here—his life was here. His affection for the cold wouldn’t be enough to draw him back. Roman wasn’t sure there was anything that would lure him back to that city that had so painstakingly thrown him out.
~~~~~
Rowan should have been working. Not technically, but there were things he needed to do. It was a Thursday evening and he’d only left work half an hour later than everyone else with the plans to go home and finish off a few things before he went to bed. And he had opened his laptop and left it by the chair he planned to eat in… but then he’d got distracted. Rowan had made his dinner then had every intention of reading over some reports when he very randomly opened a website for one of the local department stores and was now scrolling through pages of children’s toys.
He didn’t know much about kids but he knew that they liked toys. His company had developed more than enough advertisements to appeal to the younger audiences to know that it was a very lucrative business to be in. What Rowan hadn’t been prepared for was the sheer amount of variety.
Dolls, building blocks, miniature kitchens, unicorns, plush toys. The list went on. His mother had mentioned that Elspeth’s birthday was coming up soon, and an idea had taken root. In his quest to get to know his daughter better he had the idea that he might buy her something. To him sounded dangerously close to bribery, but he was willing to try anything.
Rowan was cleaning up after his fairly late dinner when there was a hurried knocking on his door. He shook his hands off over the sink and then snatched the tea towel from where it hung on the over handle to dry his hands. The knocking came again, this time more urgently. Curiosity had him moving a little faster, wondering who was insistently trying to disturb his evening.
This time the knocking was short, sharp and hard.
“I’m coming, I’m coming,” Rowan muttered.
He swung the door open and the sight in front of him made his heart skip a beat. Aelin stood there, Elspeth cradled in her arms. The child didn’t look good, her skin was pale and her body seemed to be shuddering.
“She’s sick,” Aelin said, stating the obvious.
For a moment Rowan just stood there, trying to process. Then his brain kicked into gear, along with a healthy dose of panic. “What’s wrong?”
“I just need you to drive us to the hospital,” Aelin said, ignoring his question. “Please.”
“Yeah, of course,” Rowan wouldn’t press the issue—not when he could see the urgency of the request. “Just one minute.”
The door swung when it was released but didn’t close but Aelin didn’t bother with entering his apartment. All Rowan did was grab his wallet and keys and then found them waiting in the hallway. Elspeth’s head was now resting on her mother’s shoulder and Aelin swayed in place. There was a bag hanging off Aelin’s arm and taking that small burden was the first thing Rowan did.
Aelin rushed off to the elevator and Rowan followed. He kept a cautious eye on Elspeth, feeling useless as they waited. What he was trying to comprehend was that Aelin had come to him for help. It must have been a real emergency then if she wasn’t going to wait around for someone else. Or maybe, Rowan selfishly thought, this was progress.
The elevator finally arrived and Aelin stepped in, Rowan right behind her hitting the button for the garage. Elspeth coughed and then let out a whimpering cry. It was an awful sound, something in his chest twisted because of it.
“My keys are in the small pocket, we’ll take my car,” Aelin said, nodding at the bag Rowan held.
He found the keys, holding them in his hand so he was ready. Rowan wanted more information but he knew this wasn’t the time or place to ask, he would just have to silently manage his building concern. And even though he was being useful, he still felt a little helpless struggling with the unknown. He would drive them to the hospital and then what? What would happen to Elspeth when they got there? Would it just be a short stay or would it be longer? Would Aelin want him to wait? What could he realistically do to help in this situation when they got to the hospital? Rowan could feel the tension in his body building with each new question.
It wasn’t much longer until they were at the car. Rowan left Aelin to get Elspeth sorted and he dropped into the driver’s seat. His long legs were bent uncomfortably and he pushed the seats back. This brought him back to years ago when he would drive Aelin’s car. He always copped it afterwards if he didn’t put it back to the original position.
“I know, baby I know,” Aelin murmured as she strapped Elspeth into her car seat while she protested. “I know you don’t want to go but we need to make you feel better.”
Rowan monitored the progress in the rearview mirror. When Aelin sat back and clicked her seatbelt into the buckle he started driving.
Elspeth whimpered and complained, and he saw her reaching for her mother. Aelin lent over and kissed that little hand and gave Elspeth and her own to hold onto. “You’re okay, Elsie. I know it hurts, but we can make it better.
Rowan was tempted once again to seek some explanation over what had Elspeth so distressed, but it seemed he didn’t have to.
“She’s okay,” Aelin said, no doubt noting how Rowan couldn’t stop checking the rearview mirror. “I would have taken her to the doctor but it’s after house and the quickest and easiest way to get her seen is take to the hospital. It’s just a bit of a cold but they hit her pretty hard and I just want to get some things checked.”
“Poor thing.” Rowan couldn’t think of anything else to say.
“We manage.”
Those words were clipped and a little defensive and they had no need to be. Rowan wouldn’t come for her over this. Gods, seeing Elspeth so miserable and in obvious pain… Aelin was doing the best that she could. And it would have taken a lot for her to knock on his door for help. It stung a little that she would still assume he would think so negatively about her in that way.
It was ten minutes more before they reached the hospital and Rowan dropped them as close to the doors as he could. Aelin hadn’t said anything besides thanks before she left so Rowan wasn’t sure what he should do. Maybe he’d just wait in the car, but when he parked he saw the bag that Aelin had been left behind.
Rowan ended up in the waiting room, the bag keeping him company on the seat beside him. Neither Aelin or Elspeth were in sight, and he was glad that they were seen so quickly. To kill time he mindlessly scrolled through his phone, his mind too muddled to do anything productive. The bag next to him was all the prodding he needed to approach the reception desk and get whatever information they would give him.
“Excuse me, I was wondering if I could get an update on Elspeth Galthynius?” Rowan asked.
The woman at the desk gave him a polite smile and then clicked a few things. “She’s been moved to the children’s ward.”
“Her mother left a bag with me, am I right to take it through?” He held up the bag as evidence.
“No problem, go through.”
“Thanks,” Rowan said and then followed the signage to the children’s ward.
He was stopped again at those doors and he gave the same story and was let through without much fuss. They had also given him a room number so he kept an eye out for the right one. The door was open and he found Aelin sitting next to Elspeth’s bed, watching her daughter. There was a monitor bandaged to Elspeth’s hand and he noted there was an oxygen apparatus next to the bed that wasn’t being used. Besides that Rowan couldn’t decipher anything about her condition because Elspeth was asleep. Rowan could immediately tell that Aelin was less stressed and that was reassuring. She didn’t look ready to fight the nearest threat anymore, her shoulders were looser, the lines of her face more relaxed. He knocked and then stepped into the room.
“Hey, I just wanted to see if there was anything else you needed,” Rowan said, handing over the bag.
“Oh,” Aelin looked and sounded exhausted. “Um, no we’re okay.”
“Alright,” Rowan still hesitated. “Is anyone else coming? I can leave your car here and get myself back.”
“Shit, I didn’t even think of that. Take my car, Fen should be here soon,” Aelin replied, rubbing at her face. “Thank you, again.”
“Don’t worry about it,” Rowan moved closer so he could lower his voice. “What’s wrong?”
Aelin rubbed her hands on her thighs and swallowed hard. “When Elsie was just about four months old she got RSV, it’s a respiratory infection. Since then she’s been more susceptible to reinfection or getting a bad cough when she gets sick. She also has something a little off about the structure of the inside of her ears, so whenever she gets sick we usually get ear aches as well. Just… Overall she gets infections easier so I always want to make sure they get seen and diagnosed right away.”
Elspeth being this unwell explained why she had fallen asleep so suddenly on him the other day.
“Do they happen often? The earaches?” Rowan asked and Aelin nodded. “I had ear problems too, the eustachian tubes, Right?”
Aelin swallowed again, eyes darting from him to Elsie. “I didn’t know that.”
Rowan took a chance and sat down on the chair next to Aelin, feeling less awkward and imposing. “I used to get horrible earaches, so bad that I still remember them vividly. But I eventually grew out of them.”
Aelin just nodded, eyes fixed on a spot on the floor. They were quiet for a while and then Aelin laughed stiffly. It left Rowan a bit surprised and he didn’t know what he was supposed to respond with.
“It hurts so much to see her in pain and there’s nothing I can do about it. It’s a sickening kind of helplessness,” Aelin explained. “I try… but it never seems good enough. She wanders off and licks the glass at work or something, or we go to the library and some random kid coughs on her.”
That comment made Rowan huff a small laugh, and to his surprise his response made Aelin lips quirk in a fraction of a smile. But it fell away too quickly and when Aelin looked to where Elspeth slept Rowan could see the unshed tears in her eyes.
“Last time you saw me I lost her and then there was her almost taking a solo ride in the elevator,” Aelin said. “I don’t know what it is but you seem to keep witnessing my worst mothering moments. I just—”
Aelin broke. Her breath caught and Rowan recognised her tell tale efforts she was dedicating to stop herself from crying. It stunned Rowan for a moment and he was about to tell her that these supposed failings didn’t affect his opinion of her as a mother, but he didn’t get the chance. From what he had seen, Aelin was a dedicated mother, this evening had been proof of that. Right now she was practically shaking—he could see the tremors in her hand from where it rested on the arm of the plastic chair.
He wasn’t sure what made him do it but he reached and took Aelin’s hand, squeezing it just a little bit.
“You’re doing great,” Rowan said, hoping she could understand how genuine he was.
Aelin looked from his hand to his face, reading his open sincerity. She swallowed, and she withdrew her hand to stop tears from rolling down her cheeks. Rowan was searching for something else to say when there was a knock on the door. Aelin’s head jerked towards the door, Rowan looking away from her to send his eyes in the same direction. A pretty doctor stood in the doorway, probably around Aelin’s age, her hazel eyes darting between him and Aelin.
“Dad, I assume?” she said.
“No,” Aelin said quickly. “I mean, yes. But no. Gods,” she muttered.
Rowan’s gut twisted at hearing that awful and hurried explanation. He didn’t dare contend it.
“Can we talk outside? I don’t want to wake her.” Aelin stood and was halfway to the door when she stopped. “Is this… you all right with this?”
Meaning being left alone with Elspeth.
Without hesitation Rowan gave his answer. “No worries, I’ll sit with her.”
An expression filled with mixed emotions appeared on Aelin’s face and then she followed the doctor out the door. Rowan was left alone in the room with Elspeth. It was quiet except for the quiet hum of the machines and Elspeth’s sharp intake of breath every once and a while. She was still asleep, laying on her stomach, her hand with the monitor attached resting beside her head. Her skin was still pale, but there was a rosy flush on her chubby cheeks. Every once and a while she took in a deep breath and it jerked her whole body, making Rowan start every time. He had never seen her this still, she was usually so energetic and it gave him the opportunity to study her.
She looked so much like Aelin. He could still recall the photos of her as a child that he had seen and Elspeth was like a mini double. But Rowan was also starting to see himself in her too. His mother had been right, the way her brow furrowed was like him and maybe there was something in the shape of her face that was like him. And there were her green eyes, of course.
Those eyes that opened now, lost and hazy for a moment before they focused on the unfamiliar room and what was weighing down her hand. Elspeth’s face fell, tears quickly gathering.
Rowan was out of his chair in an instant, panicking with the need to calm her down. “Hey, there sweetheart. It’s okay.”
That did nothing and tears ran down her cheeks as she raised her head up, no doubt looking for her mother.
“Hey, Elsie, it’s okay,” Rowan said, crouching beside the bed. He realised a moment later that was one of the few times he had said her name. But it seemed to get her attention. “Mum’s just outside, she’ll be right back.”
”Mama,” Elspeth just about squeaked.
“Yeah, she’s talking to the doctor, she’s still here,” Rowan assured her.
“Hurts, Rowan.” She remembered him and was saying his name a little better. Elspeth pulled on her ear. “Hurts here.”
So carefully, he pulled her hand away from her ear so that she didn’t irritate it more. “I know, sweetheart.”
Elspeth held onto his thumb, not even trying to go back to her ear. Her hand was so godsdamned tiny compared to his. She didn’t say anything, but did start to cry harder.
”Hey, hey,” Rowan tried to soothe, scrambling for something. “How about a lullaby, one from when I was small?”
She didn’t give a verbal response, just watched him with expectant and wide eyes. Rowan cleared his throat and then started singing.
Beautiful Dreamer, wake unto me,
Starlight and dewdrops are waiting for thee
Sounds of the rude world heard in the day,
Lull'd by the moonlight have all passed away
Beautiful dreamer, queen of my song,
List while I woo thee with soft melody
Gone are the cares of life's busy throng
Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me
Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me
Beautiful dreamer, out on the sea,
Mermaids are chanting the wild Lorelei
Over the stream let vapours are borne,
Waiting to fade at the bright coming morn.
Beautiful dreamer, beam on my heart,
E'en as the morn on the stream let and sea;
Then will all clouds of sorrow depart,
Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me
Rowan stopped singing and it seemed to have worked. Elspeth breathed a little faster and her eyes fluttered, but she was relaxed and happy. The smile she gave only reached half her mouth with her cheek squished on the mattress. Regardless, it was sweet enough to make Rowan’s chest tighten. It was beautiful in a heartbreaking way. She tried her hardest to keep her eyes open but they stayed close, and just like that she was asleep again. For longer than he should have, Rowan let Elspeth hold onto him, not wanting to lose the small weight of her hand just yet. It was only when he was sure she was soundly asleep and that moving away wouldn’t wake her, he did so. A little regretfully because he had been more than happy to offer her that small comfort as long as she needed it. He sat back in his chair and just waited.
Aelin came back into the room, shutting the door quietly behind her. “How’d she go?”
”She woke up for a second but then she settled,” Rowan said, some of that awkwardness from before still lingering.
“Thank you,” Aelin said.
Rowan couldn’t help the slight smile that tilted his lips, remembering  Elspeth’s little smile. “I was no problem, Aelin.”
“I mean for everything.”
Rowan took in the way that Aelin stood with her arms crossed, but not with hostility. It was enough of a reprieve to prompt him to ask, “Why me?”
“You were closest,” was Aelin’s simple answer. “I might have been able to drive myself but I would be fretting. Everyone else is on the other side of the city right now and I don’t like to wait, not when it comes to her.”
”I would never have turned you down,” Rowan said. He almost added I hope you know that but Aelin answered before he could.
But he didn’t need to. “I know that.”
They fell into silence again, slightly awkward, but when weren’t things awkward between them these days? At least they’d expended most of their anger. Aelin shaking her head drew Rowan’s attention, and there was nothing he could think to say. Then he heard hurried footsteps and then the door opened. Fenrys stepped into the room, concern written all over his face.
“How’s she doing?” Fenrys asked, all his focus on Aelin and Elsie. Rowan wouldn’t have been surprised if his presence was going completely unnoticed.
“She’s okay,” Aelin said, as Fenrys met her at the foot of the small bed. “It’s her ears again.”
Immediately Fenrys wrapped an arm around Aelin, and it was over her head that Rowan was finally noticed. Fenrys’ dark eyes went a bit wide, but there was no other reaction besides that. Rowan shifted his attention back to Elspeth who was still soundly asleep thanks to his singing. Aelin and Fenrys were conversing quietly and it was apparent that he was no longer needed, so he’d excuse himself and leave.
“I’ll head back,” he said. “Hope she feels better soon.”
”Thank you, Rowan,” Aelin said again.
In response Rowan nodded, and with one last look at Elsie, he left. He didn’t get far before he heard his name being called. Turning, Rowan saw Fenrys walking towards him. It gave Rowan a chance to take the other man in—he looked dishevelled, his curls were messy and there was almost a frantic air about him. He must have raced from wherever he’d been, likely getting caught in traffic.
“Hey,” Fenrys said when he got close enough. “Thanks for bringing them here.”
This was the first civil interaction since the park and, like now, they had been in public. But this time there was no impactful audience here in the hospital hallway. Nothing about what Fenrys was doing right was performative, that much was very clear.
“Don’t mention it,” Rowan said. “Even if that was the least I could do, I was happy to do it.”
“I know.” Fenrys extended his hand. “I mean it. Thank you.”
This was strange for Rowan. Once upon a time he would have been Aelin’s knight in shining armour, now that role was taken by someone else. Fenrys’ affection for both Aelin and Elspeth was genuine, there was no doubt about that. And Rowan saw the hand shake for the peace offering it was. This was an offer for burying the hatchet once and for all, prompted on by gratitude.
Rowan had nothing to lose here, and everything to gain. Holding onto this grudge when he didn’t even have the full story of how things ended up the way they had was going to keep him from his goal. Rowan’s priority was Elspeth, any animosity that remained would only cause more damage to everything he was working so hard to build. More than that, seeing the way it had unfolded tonight, how many times had Fenrys been the one to step up when no one else would?
His daughter had benefited from that care and attention. That was the bitter truth of it, because Rowan was not there himself.
Rowan shook Fenrys’ hand. “It’s all good, Fen.”
Some of that tension lifted from Fenrys’ face, and a soft smile appeared instead as he glanced back to the hospital room. “I’ll let you go.”
”Look after them,” Rowan said and left before he got any kind of reply.
It was clearer than anything now, Elspeth—and Aelin— had everything they needed. And it wasn’t just a ride home for the hospital. If Rowan left tomorrow, the impact he would leave on Elspeth’s life would be next to nothing. She would go on and forget he existed. That didn’t sit well with Rowan. His daughter didn’t need him but Rowan was beginning to wonder if he was the one that needed her.
~~~~~
Rowan left and Aelin felt like she could breathe again. She had been thankful for the way he hadn’t even hesitated to get them to the hospital, but there was still so much tension when he was around.
“I’ll be back in a sec.”
Fenrys left, dropping a kiss on the top of Aelin’s head. She didn’t know what he had to say to Rowan and she was too tired to try and eavesdrop. It didn’t feel like her place to monitor their every interaction, not like it had before. All the volatile feelings that led to adverse reactions seemed to have worked themselves out. That was good, one less thing for her to worry about.
Her boyfriend wasn’t gone too long, and he ended up leading them over to one of the chairs, pulling Aelin down to sit in his lap. She’d been stuck in a trance watching Elsie breathe and hadn’t realised how close her legs were to giving out until they started moving. Aelin leaned into Fenrys, letting the closeness of his body and his steady heartbeat relax her. She dropped down a bit more so she could rest with her feet on the other chair.
“What happened?” Fenrys asked softly.
Taking in a deep breath Aelin explained everything. Elsie had been rundown for a few days, Fenrys had known that, he’d even been the one to point it out when he picked them up from the shopping mall the other day. It had started with a runny nose, then a cough, then this evening Elsie’s temperature had spiked and the earaches had started. Aelin knew what would happen next, the symptoms would escalate and so would Elsie’s distress. When her daughter was sick she would wind herself so much that it would exacerbate her cough, then she’d vomit and then it would go down from there. At the hospital they could put her on oxygen and give her pain relief, minimising the risk of dehydration and worse.
“Elsie was close to vomiting and I couldn't get her to keep the medicine in her mouth,” Aelin explained. “I weighed my options and Rowan was the best of them.”
”It was good of him to bring you two down,” Fenrys said. “I thanked him for it.”
”I did too,” Aelin said, then she laced her fingers with Fenrys’ and snuggled into his side. “So, it turns out that Elsie’s ear problems were inherited. From him.”
Fenrys huffed out a breath. “Guess that they have more in common than that frown, huh?”
“Mhmm,” Aelin hummed. Then she was silent for a long time, considering if she should say what she was thinking, knowing Fenrys would rally to assuage her doubts. But she couldn’t leave it, not when old insecurities raised their ugly head. “Do you think she might have suffered less if I had of known?”
Just as she knew he would, Fenrys wasn’t hearing a bar of it. “Chances are she would have had the same problems no matter what. Maybe we might have cottoned onto the cause a bit earlier, but don’t beat yourself up about it. Elsie is fine, she always is and always will be as long as you’re her mother.”
Aelin tilted her face up while Fenrys looked down at her. Her boyfriend was full of shit and she was about to tell him so when he stopped down and kissed her. “Don’t start. I’ll always win. I have years of evidence to counter every argument.”
“Fen,” Aelin said, her throat getting tight. “You’re too good to me.”
He kissed her again. “Maybe.”
There was a soft groan from the bed and Elsie stirred, her free hand rubbing at her eyes and she panicked for a moment while she tried to work out where she was. Aelin was instantly moving, sitting on the edge of the bed and smoothing a hand over Elsie’s hair.
“Hey, I’m here. We’re at the hospital, remember?”
“Where Rowan?” Elsie asked, raising her head up a bit, but that seemed to disturb her ear which she started pulling at.
Aelin gently pulled that hand away. “He went home.”
Her daughter looked visibly upset by that. “He sung me my song, Mama.”
“He…” it took Aelin a moment to figure it out. The lullaby she had stolen from him. “That was nice of him.”
“He’s my friend,” Elsie said with full confidence, as much as she could be in her sickly state.
Aelin didn’t know how to take that little bit of news, little did Elsie know that biologically he was much more than that.
“Uncle Fen!” She said when she saw who was seated behind her mother.
Fenrys gave the girl a smile full of adoration. “Hey there, Pumpkin. Not feeling good?”
Elsie shook her head. “Ears, uncle Fen.”
”We should get rid of them,” Fenrys said, making Elsie gasp.
”No.” she drew out the word, her voice hoarse.
“I’ll do mine to match.”
Elsie laughed and Aelin smiled along with her. But then her daughter’s demeanour changed to something more serious.
”Home, Mama?”
Aelin shook her head. “Tomorrow, my love.”
Elsie frowned in response, Aelin hated to see her upset.
”Can I come up there and give you a hug?” She asked.
Elsie nodded enthusiastically, and Aelin cradled her in her arms, rocking back and forth gently. Then she started humming the lullaby again, knowing that it would calm Elsie down immediately. Because Aelin had been singing it for years, ever since that first hospital visit. That lullaby had been one thing she could rely on to soothe her fussy child. While Aelin hummed her way through the tune she tried not to think about the unexpected and lasting effects the father of her child seemed to be having in not just her and Elsie’s lives, but what it might mean for him now as well.
JULY
The air had grown thinner in the past month. Everyone could feel the warmth of the season wearing them down to the point where all they sought to do is kick back and enjoy a cold drink.
Despite the low number of raids and sightings of infected, the patrol group remained alert. You didn’t mind, really; starting the night shift when the sun was going down, after having spent most of the day in the sun, it offered you a sensation you hadn’t felt since your childhood back in California. If anything, it made you nostalgic. Even with everything that was going on.
Since news broke out that Tommy singlehandedly took care of a group of raiders in June, the people in Jackson have become more vigilant of their whereabouts and surroundings, but there was also a bizarre concoction of fear and admiration targeted at the man who built an entire town from scratch. Tommy was just as loved as before—people just knew now to never get on his bad side.
The other Miller brother though, that one was the thorn in your back.
Things have gotten more… quiet between the two of you. Which was preferable to the rest of the patrol who were growing tired having to listen to you bicker all the time. But, since that June night when the two of you nearly committed what could’ve only be described as a fatal mistake, Joel simply distanced himself from you. And you followed his lead; you did the exact same thing. It was much better this way. You both relished into the stillness of the environment, neither one of you being on the talkative side, and you only spoke when absolutely necessary.
The interesting thing about that? It grew to be bothersome. It was actually kind of upsetting that all you and Joel did was gaze at each other from afar, eyes darkened by unspoken things that you would’ve rather buried than to ever allow to come to the surface.
And that made you even grumpier and angrier. You failed to understand this kind of reaction to someone who repeatedly called you stubborn and relentless, and it was causing you to lose sleep too, to dwell into the littlest things and put them for observation under a microscope.
You knew why this was happening, of course. It was a no-brainer. But it’s not like it was your fault. Not even his, really. It was a silly little moment of distraction, nothing else. So what if you were caught in the rain and his calloused hands were over your waist, keeping you close, and you were unable to look away from his lips?
It was nothing but a momentary privation of judgment, a mere result of years of solitude and finally coming in contact with human warmth.
But, rather than stewing in your confusion, you chose to mind your business and go about your days as usual. Aside the occasional run-in with the infected, your life in Jackson has been pretty boring throughout the past seven months, as opposed to the unstable and chaotic life you’ve led in the past seven years. You can’t really complain though; it’s been a nice change of pace. It makes you think of your family, how they would’ve fit right in here.
Today, however, upon Annie’s request, you agreed to train some of the kids in town how to handle weapons. It wasn’t the easiest task if you really thought about it. You found it to be a grim scenario, teaching children how to use guns. But the world you’re living in is cruel and unforgiving, and there are worse punishments than death. In retrospect, learning how to defend yourself from a frail age might be a preferable choice than the alternatives.
A bullet flies right by your head, and you duck instantly. You search the fairly small crowd of children to find the culprit, and your eyes land on a brown haired, doe-eyed teenager. You make a face when you remark the guilt on her face.
“Sorry,” she apologizes.
You inch towards her. “Ellie, right?”
“The one and only. I think.”
“So you’re the infamous Ellie.”
She looks you up and down, eyes landing on the holster strapped to your right thigh, then moving back up to your figure.
“Saw you around with Joel,” you explain, unwilling to be misunderstood. You knew that sometimes people found your dry-spoken words to be intimidating, and you didn’t want to make her feel uncomfortable. Trust was very important, and a must-have in any situation. “He seems fond of you. Which makes me think he’s part human.”
Ellie smiles, and so do you. “Jury’s still out on that one.”
“Ah.”
Her eyes drop to your holster again. “Can you teach me how to use that?”
You follow her eyes to the same spot, noticing she’s referring to the special knife you keep in the holster. You then raise your brows at her.
“What for?” you ask rather amused.
Ellie shrugs. “What if I need it?”
“You mean my one-of-a-kind knife that only I possess? Highly doubt it.”
“You said it yourself, it’s not a regular knife. I mean—look at that thing! It’s got that curve thing right there… it’s a nice blade!”
You suppress a chuckle, staring in admiration at her. She’s got spunk, alright. She’s excited and funny and warm, in spite of everything that the world may have thrown at her. You suppose that’s the magic of being a kid. You can still find the light in the darkest of places.
“Not many kids are interested in weapons, you know?” you tell her as you pull her aside. “Take a look around. They don’t wanna do this. But it’s a necessary evil. You, on the other hand… you’re a pretty special kid.”
“So I’ve been told.”
There’s playfulness and sarcasm in her voice, and it makes you like her more. You can definitely see why Joel took a shining to her as well.
Now, you don’t know the full story. You only know the bits and pieces Tommy deemed acceptable to confess to you. All you heard is that Ellie was wanted by the Fireflies and that Joel was supposed to deliver her to them, but changed his mind and saved her from them, killing an entire group of people who stood in his way. There were some pieces of that puzzle you could put together without anyone telling you anything explicitly, but you kept to yourself. You sure as hell wasn’t gonna ask Joel about what happened.
“So? What do we think?” Ellie asks. “Do we have a deal?”
You frown, half amused and half impressed with her boldness.
“It’s not up to me, you know.”
“Sure it is. It’s your knife, isn’t it?”
You huff, staring at her and hoping that she’ll get the message without you actually saying it. Luckily, she does; within the next second, she makes a face to reveal her disappointment.
“Do not say it’s up to Joel,” she nearly whines. “He’s just gonna say no.”
“Okay. Then I can say no.”
“Oh, come on! We’re at a how to use a gun camp filled with kids and you’re gonna deny a kid a little weapon?”
“You still gotta work on your aim with the regular gun. You nearly shot me in the head.”
“Holding a grudge, I see.”
You smile. Unbeknownst to you, Joel is somewhere in the background, your silhouette in close proximity to Ellie’s having caught his attention. He watches carefully, a dozen scenarios invading his mind at that very moment.
“It’s not a grudge,” you reassure her. “I just think that if you can’t handle something as simple as a gun, you won’t be able to handle this knife.”
“A knife is easier than a gun.”
“You think so?”
Ellie nods, and you pull out the knife, twisting it between your fingers. Her eyes go wide with admiration, thirsting for knowledge. Then, as you hand the blade to her, she looks at you utterly stunned.
“Go ahead,” you tell her. “Stab me.”
“Uh… what?”
“You said it’s easier than a gun. Show your work. Try and stab me.”
“I’m not gonna—“
“Try to.”
Indecisive, Ellie holds the knife, weighing it. Then, she moves towards you, swinging the blade as you instructed. You duck, and as she pulls away, she notices a little string of blood coming from her hand.
“Shit,” Ellie says under her breath, noticing her bleeding palm.
You take the knife back from her and sliding it into the holster.
“It’s not a regular knife,” you say. “You were right. Which means that if you don’t know how to hold it properly, you’ll most likely kill yourself before you kill someone else.”
Joel moves closer in the background, reckoning something was wrong. He sees Ellie slouched, staring into her palm, and his pulse starts to race.
“If you’d teach me—“
“You already tried to shoot me today, so I’m gonna stick with no. And as much as you might hate hearing it—or as much as I hate saying it—Joel is technically your guardian. If he says it’s okay, I’ll teach you.”
“So that’s not gonna happen.”
You shrug. “Looks like we’re both stuck on Joel.”
“We?”
Taken aback by your own words, you clear your throat as your eyes drop to her hand, still bleeding in the slightest. You take it in your hands, examining it, but she shyly pulls away, dragging the sleeve of her shirt over it.
“It’s just a cut, it’s not that bad,” you try to reassure her.
But Ellie looks even more hesitant as she gulps, staring into the ground.
“Why are you wearing long sleeve shirts in the middle of summer?” you ask. “Aren’t you warm?”
“I’m good.”
Her tone, like her face, drops, and it only raises more questions for you. Questions you don’t pose. Instead, you put a hand on her back to guide her through the crowd and head to the little stand you and Annie set up for this exact purpose, filled with medicine and bandages. You wrap her palm nice and tight and in the process, her eyes catch the tattoo on your right wrist. She opens her mouth to say something, to ask you questions, but when she glances over your shoulder and sees Joel fast approaching, she goes silent.
“Are you okay?” Joel asks Ellie, and she nods. “What happened?”
“Nothing,” Ellie says. “A little scratch.”
His dark glare goes to you, and you can tell he’s angry.
“Why don’t you go back to the group?” you suggest to Ellie.
“You don’t have to tell me twice.”
The tension between you and Joel must’ve been more obvious than you thought.
“What happened?” Joel asks you instead.
“She wanted to try out my knife, I said no. She insisted she can handle it, and I proved to her she can’t.”
“By cuttin’ her?”
“I didn’t cut her. She scratched herself with the tip. I told her this kind of blade can be dangerous if not held properly.”
“Wrong time to do a show and tell.”
You huff, visibly displeased. “What’s up with Ellie, though? Why is she still wearing long sleeve shirts?”
The question stuns Joel. It’s written all over his face; you swear you detect some fear in his eyes too, but dwelling into that wouldn’t bring you anything good. Maybe just another headache and sleepless night.
“I’m not her father,” Joel retorts coldly. “She can wear whatever she wants.”
“I’m just saying. It’s the middle of summer, it’s hot as all hell. You’d think—“
“I don’t know, okay? What’s with the interrogation?”
You frown at him, raising your hands in surrender. “Pardon me for taking an interest.”
“Others have taken an interest in her before. Didn’t turn out so well.”
“The Fireflies?”
Joel’s face hardens with anger as he moves closer to you. You can even hear his teeth clenched in fury. You haven’t seen him this mad thus far.
“What the hell do you know about that?” he growls.
“I know that the Fireflies are just an excuse for doing fucked up shit of their own,” you reply, hands crossed at your chest. “They’re not so different from FEDRA if you think about it. So I’m guessing that whatever happened that made Ellie wanted by the Fireflies, it had to be a huge deal.”
Joel keeps quiet, munching on his bottom lip as he stares you down. You’re a stranger, basically, and the history between him and Ellie is known only by the two of them, Tommy and Maria. And there’s no way that Tommy would reveal everything to a stranger, even if he valued your skills and even thought of you as Maria’s right hand.
“I don’t want to know what happened,” you tell him. “And I don’t care about it. I was just expressing interest in Ellie. She’s a great kid.”
“She is,” Joel admits rather grudgingly.
“You got nothing to worry about. You and I, we’re just on patrol together. If you wanna ignore me because you got scared or whatever, that’s fine by me, I don’t care.”
Joel’s stares you down with a vicious twinkle in his eyes, as if he’s suggesting you to stop talking before you regret it. But you don’t care; you said the truth and if the truth is bothering him, there’s some food for thought.
“I’m not scared, and least of all of you,” he emphasizes viciously.
You inhale, rolling your eyes. The gesture brings out to the surface even more anger, anger that Joel can barely contain.
“Whatever you say.”
You turn your back to him, to which Joel responds with his fingers curling around your wrist and holding you in place. The touch is unexpected, electric, and the grip itself is far from harsh. On the contrary: it holds a gentleness to it that you wouldn’t have thought such a rugged man is capable of.
“If you’re talkin’ about that night on patrol last month—“he starts, but you instantly cut him off.
“I’m not talking about that. I was just pointing out the facts. You’re the one who brought it up.”
“How the hell are you so—? Jesus fuckin’ Christ.”
He lets go of you, rubbing his temples as he impending sensation of a headache takes over. He looks at you, shaking his head in dismay. When he sees a smirk forming in the corner of your mouth, he furiously licks his lips.
“How the hell am I so—what?” you ask, downright curious.
“Quit askin’ about Ellie,” he warns instead.
After Joel storms off, you smile in Ellie’s direction. You notice she doesn’t even roll up her sleeves, and your suspicion lives on. You don’t go around asking anything, though. It’s dangerous to talk about such things out loud, especially when this is merely a hunch at the moment. A very strong hunch based on plenty you’ve seen, but a hunch nonetheless.
You respect Joel’s words though, which again, it baffles you. Normally you wouldn’t care, but minding your business is top priority right now.
Which is why you’re surprised when you find Ellie on your doorstep later that evening. She has the same spark in her eyes as she did when she asked about your knife, which points to curiosity.
“Ellie,” you greet her, doing nothing to conceal your astonishment. “What are you doing here?”
“Well… I was gonna ask you something, if you don’t mind.”
“If it’s female-related, I understand why you wouldn’t ask Joel.”
Ellie chuckles, rubbing the back of her neck. “I don’t know why everyone thinks I tell Joel everything, or that we got some sort of father-daughter relationship.”
You scoff, hiding the laughter that’s about to come out of your mouth.
“You’re kidding,” you tell her. “That man was ready to shoot me today when he thought I hurt you. I’ve never seen a man so protective over anyone. He cares about you. A lot, based on his reaction.”
“I care about him too, he’s a pretty cool and badass guy, but he’s not my dad.”
“Sure he isn’t. Come on in.”
As Ellie enters your little house, she takes a quick look around, fidgeting with her fingers. You find the habit quite adorable, seeing as how Joel struggled with that too sometimes when he thought no one saw him.
Fuck. Did you just use adorable and Joel in the same sentence?
Fuck no.
“So, what are you doing here? What can I do for you?” you ask.
“I saw your wrist tattoo today. It’s pretty cool.”
You sneak a glance at your left wrist, then you look back at Ellie.
“Thanks,” you say. “You came all the way here to compliment my tattoo?”
“I came here to ask… if you’ve got any other tattoos.”
“Why?”
“I’m… thinking of getting one.”
Let me guess: on your right wrist.
“Where?” you ask instead.
“Not sure yet.”
You notice the hesitation on her part, but you have enough common decency to pretend like you don’t.
“Okay, well,” you start, taking a seat on the couch with Ellie following suit, “I got five tattoos in total. The one on my left wrist, then one on my right thigh, one on my left ankle, one behind my left ear, and one on my lower back.”
“Can I see them?”
You raise your brows at her, and Ellie’s face gets flushed.
“I didn’t mean that to be in a creepy way,” she quips, rather embarrassed. “I know some are private. I meant… for visualization.”
You smile reassuringly at her, and she seems to relax a little.
“Yeah, we’re not that close,” you joke, and that manages to steal a giggle from her side.
“Which one is the biggest?”
“My lower back tattoo.”
“What’s it of?”
“A snake with a half moon.”
“Whoa. Cool!”
The look on her face is quite adorable. You can tell that no matter what life threw at her, Ellie still carried some of that childlike innocence.
“What about the others, what are they of?” Ellie asks.
“I got a flower with leaves on my ankle, butterfly on my thigh, M for my sister Maya behind the ear and the rose on my wrist, which… you’ve already seen.”
You search her face for any reaction, anything that might tell you what she really noticed about your tattoo, but nothing appears. After all, she only caught a glimpse, a fleeting look. She didn’t have time to study the real reason behind the tattoo.
“You said the M is for your sister?” she inquires, and you already got a knot in your throat when you murmur a faint “mhm”. “Where is she?”
“Uh… filed under ‘people I’ve lost’.”
“Oh. I’m sorry.”
You clear your throat. “What about you, what tattoo do you want after all?”
“I don’t know. Something big enough to cover… scars.”
“Where?”
She falters yet again. “Right arm. I can’t—I can’t show you.”
“That’s okay. I wasn’t gonna ask you to. But I do hope this is helpful.”
“It is, thanks.”
“Why me though?”
She shrugs. “I think you’re pretty badass and I like you.”
To that, you smile. “You’re pretty badass yourself.”
“Does that mean I get another go at the knife?”
You shake your head and reply No before she can even fully finish the sentence.
“What happened to your sister?” Ellie asks.
The air feels constricting as you stare at her, trying to verbalize the answer. Turns out, seven years in the making and the wound still remains fresh.
“That’s a… that’s a story for another time,” you say with a bitter smile.
Ellie knows better than to push when the conversation is clearly sensitive. After all, there are things about Riley that she can’t quite fully disclose, even though, paradoxically, she loved to talk about her.
She rises from the couch, headed for the door when she turns to you and sports a charming smile.
“Thanks,” she tells you, and you nod. “I don’t know why Joel keeps insisting you’re annoying.”
You do nothing to conceal your surprise at the reveal. “Aw, he talks about me? How nice.”
“He complains a little too much to make his case believable.”
“Yeah, well. Tell him I think he’s just as stubborn and thick-headed.”
“Tell him yourself.”
Your eyes shift to the window, noticing his silhouette on the porch. He’s got his hands on his hips, and his face is darkened by anger. You shake your head and huff whilst guiding Ellie to the door.
“Speak of the big, bad wolf,” you greet him.
“Ellie, get outta here,” Joel tells her.
“I was going anyway. Sheesh, such a drama queen, relax.”
Joel waits until Ellie is out of earshot. You both watch her get farther and farther away till eventually, it’s just you and him on the porch, underneath the stars-filled sky.
“May I help you?” you ask.
Joel is like a ticking bomb. And with those words, you just pushed the button.
“What the hell do you want from Ellie?”
“She’s the one who came to me.”
“For what? What do you want with her?”
You’re taken aback by how spurred on Joel is, how protective he’s become of that sixteen year old girl and the lengths he’ll go to in order to keep her safe. It doesn’t intimidate you though; if anything, it makes your hunch turn into something more.
“She came over to ask me about my tattoos,” you carefully enunciate each word. “That’s all we talked about. She was here for ten minutes. I didn’t snap her neck.”
Joel makes a dissatisfied sound. “I told you today to stop askin’ about her.”
“And I didn’t. Get it through your thick head: I have no interest in hurting her. I have no intention of hurting anyone here.”
Jaw clenched and lips pursed, Joel looks at you, some of his anger vanishing.
“She’s just a kid,” he says, guttural. “She’s been through enough.”
“I am well aware of that.”
“She doesn’t need other problems.”
You cross your arms at your chest. “You think I’m a problem?”
“I don’t know. Are you?”
You inhale slowly, painfully aware of how close you are to one another. The thick, dry summer air is boiling in between you, rendering this moment even more asphyxiating.
“What are you so terrified of?” you ask him.
You can tell the question stumps Joel. He frowns, his lips quiver, and he looks at you with genuine confusion.
“What?” he retorts harshly.
“What makes you freeze dead in your tracks when there’s someone else around you?”
Joel’s frown deepens as he tries to determine whether you’re being serious or not.
“In case you haven’t noticed, we’ve been in this fuckin’ outbreak for twenty something years.”
“The infected don’t scare you, not anymore,” you continue seemingly mindlessly. “I know, cause that’s me. I see ‘em, I’m ready to shoot them down. Most of the time, anyway.”
You open your mouth as realization sinks in, watching a distressed Joel Miller drink in the sight of you.
“It’s human contact that terrifies you,” you conclude. “You can’t stand having people around you. You’re surprised when they stay.”
“I’m surprised when they don’t wanna kill me.”
“Lemme guess. Sad and tragic past, now you refuse to let anyone in because you’re afraid of the hurt and you can’t do it again. You tell yourself you can’t keep losing people you care about.”
“Just—stop.”
His voice is husky and harsh, filled with painful undertones that make you wonder of the tragedies in his past. You wonder what pieces of him are so far gone that he refuses to let anyone in.
That, in return, is scary to you.
“What’s the fuckin’ point, anyway?” Joel asks as if he’s having an internal monologue. “Some are lucky enough to live another day, others could die tonight. Living is a luxury. And getting’ attached… it’s got no upside to it. We’re gonna lose in the end no matter what.”
“I understand that,” you reply, much to his surprise. “Clickers, infected… those are easy. They have but one purpose: to kill. Humans, on the other hand… they’re tricky. You may never know what’s inside their heads. That’s the terrifying part.”
“You got your degree in psychology or somethin’?”
You stifle a chuckle, resorting to a mere smile. “Or something. What I can’t quite put together though is why you’re afraid of me.”
Joel cocks an eyebrow in your direction, growing more alert and aware of the fact that he is so close to you he could count your eyelashes. He swallows harshly, nearly breathless.
“Afraid of you?” he fights back. “I could pin you to the ground in one second. You ain’t a threat.”
“Oh, I don’t know about that. You avoid me, you refuse to talk to me directly, but I hear you do talk about me with Ellie, quite a lot… so what gives?”
Joel does not avert his eyes from yours. On the contrary, he stares you down, fighting a losing battle with his own mind. There’s something about your words, so tantalizing and filled with shameless subtexts that cause his head to spin and his breath to come out ragged.
“Pin me down then,” you instigate him. “Pin me against the wall for all I care. You’re not doing it, and you are not going to. Because you’re afraid that you don’t actually find me annoying at all.”
The twitching in Joel’s fingers worsens, his heart racing and his throat completely dry, as opposed to his mouth which is damn near watering.
“Keep talkin’, see what happens,” he mutters.
“I think nothing’s gonna happen. Wanna know why? You talk a big game, but you’re just—“
The warm, intoxicating sensation over your mouth doesn’t register at first; it takes several seconds before you realize that this is, in fact, Joel Miller who’s kissing you.
His lips are tender against yours, but his hands provide a harsh contrast with that as they grab your hips and hold onto them for dear life. His moustache is tickling against your upper lip, his tongue glides against yours and you sigh; you actually sigh right into his mouth, the sound reverberating throughout Joel’s entire body and making him feral. You cup his face, desperately holding onto him, onto anything that might provide some stability because this… this is something wild and needy, and it utterly consumes you.
Joel is practically holding you into his arms as he’s kissing you like a starved man. There’s an omnipresent throbbing in your body, but especially in your belly, and you squirm against him, starting to crave more.
But then, Joel pulls away from you as abruptly as he began this whole shenanigan. Breathless, he stares at you with a hunger you wouldn’t believe if he weren’t right there in front of you.
Lips swollen and reddened, you fight to regulate your breaths. “Did you just—?”
“No.” His answer is rough, quick to deny everything.
“But I—“
“It’s nothing,” he says, licking his lips. “Don’t make a big deal out of this.”
You remain speechless. Truthfully, you’re not sure what could you possibly say right now. You messed around and teased him and now here you are, lips swollen from a kiss that Joel Miller gave you. A wet, needy kiss that opened a floodgate of desires for you.
He mumbles something to you before he leaves. What, you don’t fully comprehend. You’re all alone on the porch on that hot July evening, trying to process the fact that you shared the hungriest, most passionate kiss of your life with someone who did everything to keep you at bay.
Maybe this is why.
And maybe his overprotectiveness over Ellie isn’t that far-fetched either.
After all, protecting a girl who’s immune to a fate worse than death is a big deal.
