The truth is, Diavolo doesn’t get nightmares.

No, he dreams of another world. One where his mother is still breathing, and his father greets him with a smile. Their arms are warm. Comforting. Like the sun the Devildom has always lacked, or a rather nice cocoon. There’s something about their hugs that makes him believe in himself, and that all of his dreams are possible.

They coo praise into his ear.

They mention they are proud.

Diavolo tries to push past how distorted their voices are, as his brain forces them to say things he’s never heard.

“I love you.”

Is their pronunciation right?

Should his mothers voice be lower?

No, accuracy distorts the picture. It causes the loneliness to set in quicker.

He knows it’s a dream.

It’s obvious.

But every night, he selfishly doesn’t want to wake.

Please. He begs into the open air, clinging to his parents clothes. Let me pretend a moment longer.

Diavolo doesn’t get nightmares. But maybe, he thinks after waking up with tears in his eyes yet again, maybe that would be preferable.

The conceit of Vinny melting into a puddle bc his s/o loves and appreciates his physical form and not just his talent is a familiar one. But the equal and opposite force is someone recognizing Bo for something other than his looks and that drives me up the damn wall.

Chipping away at that crusty exterior by noting the things he works hard on--the town, his cars, keeping his brothers safe. Giving that man compliments (insufferable) but they're not about his face or his body. For once, they're about the way he thinks, the work he does, how hard he tries.

And at first, of course, he's cynical and probably a dick about it. Scoffing and shrugging off any sort of praise that he doesn't believe could be genuine. But it doesn't take long to flip that switch. He's been so starved for attention, positive attention, not just attention but investment in who he is and what he wants that he just can't hold out when finally it feels like someone sees him as more than a pretty face and a bad attitude.
