(Don’t) Face Your Fears: Part 2

Yandere Merfolk Straw Hats x GN!Reader

Part 1

This is the second part to that merfolk story I wrote before that I retroactively added a name to once I realized it wasn’t just going to be a one off.

Despite several members of his crew wanting to come with him, the river cutting through your island consisting of freshwater meant that only Luffy could go. Sure, Franky did build what was essentially a mobile saltwater pool that Luffy could use to bring some of them along, but he didn’t have it nearby and Luffy wasn’t willing to wait.

He wanted to see you again, and he wanted to do so now.

Being a bull shark had many perks, and he was currently using two of them. One being the coveted ability to swim in both fresh and saltwater, and the other being an impeccable sense of smell. It was best in water, but this island was so small that he could easily follow your trail. An awfully long trail, he noted. You are quite the runner! Usopp would have some stiff competition if you were merfolk, too.

Your unique scent came to a head, bringing Luffy to a halt. Pulling himself up onto the river bank, he sniffed the air to confirm that you were nearby. Somewhere in the house not far from where he is to be exact. A sharp grin spread across his face. He was right! You do live near the river! This will make getting ahold of you much easier.

Before he could pull himself fully out of the river, someone exited the house. Not just any person, but you. Luffy quietly slipped his upper body back into the river, leaving only his head poking out of the water.

Your footsteps drew closer, stopping slightly upstream from where he was. Once there, you dropped onto the ground and buried your face in your hands. Luffy watched curiously as you groaned loudly and scowled at the river when you pulled your hands away from your face. Is this a human thing? He’s intrigued and inches closer. Humans have awful night vision, he isn’t concerned about being noticed before he wants to be.

“I can’t believe this. Months of work wasted because I just had to run into merfolk during my first trip into the ocean,” you muttered under your breath. “What kind of stupid bad luck is that?”

Bad luck? You meeting and coming to their rescue was good luck! Great luck even! Luffy frowned at what you said. He knows he startled you earlier, but he thought it was just because you were surprised to see a merman up close.

Did you just… not like merfolk?

Why not? He can guess that he was the first merman to ever be so close to you. How could you come to dislike people you’ve never really gotten to know? That doesn’t make any sense. If you were willing to help people despite your obvious discomfort, then surely you couldn’t be a hateful person.

An idea suddenly clicks in his head. Other humans must be telling you awful things about them!

Nodding with resolve, Luffy swam even closer. When he was right in front of you, he launched himself out of the water and wrapped his arms around you. You immediately tried to scream, but he was prepared for you to do that after your last interaction and slapped a hand over your mouth.

You kicked and thrashed in his arms, and it only increased as he began pulling you into the water with him. You’re definitely not weak, he’ll give you that, but you aren’t stronger than him either.

By the time he settles back into the water, you’re hysteric. You’re still trying to scream for help even with his hand in the way, and he can feel hot tears streaming down onto him. That makes him feel a little bad about what he’s doing. He doesn’t want to upset you, he just wants to show you that merfolk aren’t anything to be scared of.

“Calm down, I’m not going to hurt you!” If you heard him, you made no indication that you did. You were still fighting him hard and digging your puny human claws into his arm. What were these people telling you that had you acting this terrified?!

Luffy became distracted as he picked up on more scents and heard doors being opened. It would seem that his hand wasn’t keeping you as quiet as he’d hoped, especially not with how much you were splashing in the water. Looks like you two are going to have to leave.

Pushing off, he hastily makes his way down the river and towards the ocean. You probably wouldn’t listen if he told you to hold your breath, so he settled for swimming with you balanced on top of his chest. This was easier said than done. Between swimming upside down and your squirming, he wound up dropping you into the water.

Bizarrely, you went from doing everything to get away from him to desperately reaching your arms out to his figure and holding on for dear life. Luffy pulled you back up onto him, patting your back as you hacked up the water you’d inhaled. Much to his relief, this experience seemed to have settled you down somewhat.

You didn’t look happy by any means, but you weren’t fighting against him anymore, so he considered this a victory. Seeing that there wasn’t anyone around, Luffy decided to try talking to you again, “Hi! I’m Luffy!”

“Please don’t drown me!” You sobbed, “I’m sorry for whatever I did to make you mad, please don’t kill me!”

Drown you? Kill you??? Luffy is completely bewildered by your pleas. Sure, he did drop you just now, but that was an accident! “Whoa there, no one is going to kill you! I’m sorry I dropped you, I didn’t mean to.”

“Then what do you want from me? Please just let me go, I promise I won’t tell anyone about this!”

What’s got you so damn freaked out? He doesn’t get it. How dangerous are the people around here that you’re so horrified by him? Does every new person you come across try to harm you? That must be the case.

“I wanted to see you again! Also, I want you to join my crew! You seem really nice, so I think you’ll fit in great,” Luffy beamed at you, not paying attention to how you recoiled from his teeth.

“Join your crew?! Are you insane?! I’m not one of you!” You spat out incredulously.

“What’s that got to do with anything? We don’t mind tugging you around in a boat,” Luffy didn’t really get why you were being so argumentative about this. He already told you that he’s not going to hurt you, what’s the hold up? These other humans must really have you brainwashed. Good thing he’s here to save you from them!

“I don’t want to be pulled around on a boat in the middle of the ocean, I want to go home!” You shrieked while frantically peering around to check your surroundings.

Much to Luffy’s relief, he’d finally made it out of the river and into the ocean. Once he’s gotten you away from this awful island, he’s sure you’ll calm down and be more willing to listen. You’ll love all the other crew members after you get to know them, he just knows it! You won’t even want to go back to this pathetic island after they’ve made friends with you.

“You’re back already? Could you not- You’ve got to be kidding!” Sanji surfaced and swam straight at you two. “You really thought it was a good idea to drag them out here just like that?”

You cringed away from the new shark and looked like you were about to faint. Luffy couldn’t help but puff out his chest in pride as you clung onto him, obviously a part of you recognized that he could protect you.

“I had to! Other humans showed up, and I couldn’t just leave them all alone there!” Luffy nuzzled his face into your hair, choosing to ignore the way you shuddered from the contact. You’re probably just a little cold.

“That’s bullshit! No one came out until after you dragged me in!”

Sanji’s eyes narrowed at Luffy, “This is why we didn’t want you to go alone, you have no tact!”

“Like you would have done any better! You would’ve just creeped them out if you’d gone,” Nami jabbed. Sanji sulked away, not even attempting to plead his case. Nami, on the other hand, swam closer to you, eyeing you up curiously. She reached out to experimentally tug on your wet clothing, not paying any mind to how uncomfortable you looked.

Chopper was the next to appear. You were definitely surprised by his appearance, but seemed more confused than scared by him. The doctor went right up to you, visibly concerned, “Luffy! You can’t just drag a human into the water like this! It’s cold enough that they could get hypothermia if we don’t get them someplace dry soon!”

You latched onto this immediately, “Y-Yeah, you should take me back to shore before I get sick!”

“Don’t worry, I got this covered!” Franky pulled a self made boat over, “It’s not much yet, but I’ve got biiiig plans for this thing.” The boat in question looked like a small house boat. There weren’t any doors on it, just an open three walled structure for shelter.

“Oooh, good thinking, Franky!” Luffy happily approached the boat and heaved you onto it. The second you were out of his arms, you scrambled into the walled off part of it. You stared at them with wide eyes with your back pressed up against one of the walls.

More of his crew appeared, wanting to get a good look at you now that you weren’t actively running away from them. With each head that popped out of the water, you curled in on yourself more and more.

“Are you sure this is a good idea? What if other humans come after us to get them back? Don’t we have enough enemies already?” Usopp was hanging back, still skittish about this whole idea.

“Of course it is! They’re our friend now, so we’ll protect them!” Luffy pulled himself up onto the boat while you shrank back even farther. He turns to face you, grinning even wider than he already was, “Don’t worry about all those awful humans on that island, we won’t let them hurt you!”

“What are you talking about? Everyone there is-”

“Very dangerous and spreading lies about what merfolk are like! You don’t need to say anything, I already figured it out,” Luffy nodded proudly.

“You didn’t figure shit out, you maniac!”

No one listened to you, and there was a chorus of groans from the merfolk. This was hardly anything new to them, humans always assumed the worst of them.

Admittedly, Luffy didn’t have a long term plan for what to do with you yet, but he’s already made it this far without ever making any plans. Everything will fall into place soon enough, and you’ll learn to be grateful for his extremely considerate rescue.

"yeah" you replied to robin. everyone was dressed up in their top notch clothes, ready for the photoshoot, men dressed up in suits while the ladies were ready with their short sexy dresses. you wore a black dress which showed off your cleavage and a bit of chest, complimenting your pale legs and perfectly hugging your curves. any men would fall for you.

the girls got out of their rooms only to be greeted by the men. "are you guys finally ready? took you long enough" luffy said, only to be replied by nami "we take time cause we look good!"

they headed to the location fixed for the photoshoot.

everyone got their group and a couple of photoshoots done. it was now time for the individual ones. your turn came. you headed towards the center. the photographer came near you. he put his hands on your shoulders.

"please lean down ma'am" zoro was already getting angry at the photographer for touching you. you leaned down to the position. he clicked a few photos, and came near you again.

he touched your cleavage and made you sit in a seductive position. you were clearly uncomfortable. zoro and other crewmates noticed that.

"mr. photographer, can she take a break for a while, she seems tired" sanji said. you walked towards sanji and thanked him for noticing your uncomfortable situation.

"you want some help?" you smirked at the sight of him. "I don't want help, I'll do the things myself"

One Piece Chapter 1112 - Initial Thoughts

3 Long Long Weeks

But finally we have returned, One Piece is back and the chaos resumes!

I'm glad Oda of course got to rest, but these weeks have been rough without it, so I'm eager to jump back into Egghead.

Spoilers for the Chapter, Support the Official Release too!

We continue with the Yamato-quest cover story, apparently he's asked Kin'emon for a favour and has compensated for it with payment

As the Mark IIIs get taken down, V. Nusjuro criticizes Vegapunk's decision to give Bonney 'the power to destroy nations'

Of course blind to the fact that they literally have been robbing a child of their parent and been trying to kill her, but yes poor you and your clone army will listen to their child over you

The Navy are still trying to target the Giants' ships, as we get back to the Vice Admirals confronting Bonney and Franky

Fuck yeah Franky! Bellamied that Vice Admiral Nine-Chins!

Bonney de-ages and kicks away the Shell Vice Admiral as well with ease

The transmission is still ongoing, Vegapunk has a sensitive mouth, given the tongue, so he's waiting for the coffee to cool

York leads Mars to the room where it was recorded, and Mars immediately went for the laser!

York continues to explain, stating that destroying the building is futile

We get another layout of Punk Records, sounds like it's an explosion hazard, gas cylinders that could blow Punk Records sky high

Mars suggests that York use their collective mind to figure out where Vegapunk hid the broadcaster, though York mentions something about 'sins' which Mars seems to pick up on

He also senses something in Punk Records, some decent observation haki

York details what the snail looks like and Mars flies off

In the control center, Stussy is alive and so is Kaku albeit still bubbled

I feel like it bodes poorly for her, with Lucci still moving and all, but Kaku asks whether she just got abandoned

Seems Stussy has a mission still to do, one she volunteered to stay behind for

Interesting though that Kaku didn't know it was Mars, given how Lucci did

Edison explains that Stussy is staying behind to lower the barrier

Also Robin panels! She's still in a med bed but this time she has dialogue!

The group still have concerns though how they'll get out without Vega Force 01, even though Edison says the odds are impossible

Usopp has a Coup de Burst set, but we're waiting on Zoro and Jinbe, it may come down to improvisation

Edison seems to respect that though, despite the odds and the facts he admires tenacity

And with that inspiration he leaps from the Labosphere, with a plan to get them to safety - as well as tanking the laser damage

Godspeed little fella, sorry for hoping you were a fraud at the beginning because of your namesake

Back with Luffy and their escape has been halted by Shai Halud

Ju Peter is using suction to try and bring them back in so Luffy stuffs a building in his mouth

But that's it again for Gear Fifth as he goes saggy, fortunately the Giants have food called Hákarl

Fermented Shark Meat, but it'll do, it was said to be reserve rations

Warcury's on the charge next, but is hit by a Red Roc

Luffy's hand aches from the impact though, so Warcury is very durable or has the Rough Skin ability like a Garchomp

Oh no...Saturn has climbed to the Labosphere with Nami, Robin, Brook, Lilith and Usopp

And V. Nusjuro has blocked the path ominously between Bonney, Atlas and Franky

Mars finds a transponder snail with a minute of time remaining too, it all looks dire

It looks dire, but something tells me there's a switch coming.

Saturn will likely be confronted by the returning Zoro and Jinbe, though I'd like to see Usopp, Nami and Brook put up a fight. V. Nusjuro will likely be a Sanji opponent methinks, though he's built to be a Zoro opponent I think the alternation makes sense there. Either way due to immortality the Straw Hats can't win, there has to be a secondary clutch action in order to trigger an escape, the Iron Giant is one thing probably on the ground level but perhaps whatever Edison plans is a second?

It was good to see Robin and Stussy again, and the latter actually doing something even though I'm 90% certain Lucci's gonna jump her at the worst moment. I still hope for a Kaku face turn again but we'll see, him being moved likely means the other CP agents and Seraphim could've been moved too, spared from the wreckage. Also proud that Franky one-shotted a vice admiral because yes, that should be how a Yonko crewmember would deal with it!

As for the transponder, I don't think that's where Punk put it, it's a feint, an inconspicuous decoy that will undercut the Gorosei's believed victory in the moment, pride comes before the fall after all and the narcissism on these dicks is outstanding.

Interestingly I don't know any other lingering factors that can come in clutch, unless the Grand Fleet are gonna pop out; Doll and Bluegrass are still circling the island so something will likely happen there, the Seraphim are at the mercy of the chain of command, so it's getting to the make or break part of the arc before the grand escape.

Oda-approved questions to help build your OC

If you head to the One Piece Wiki page of the Straw Hats and take a look at the Miscellaneous section, you'll find a lot of trivia questions about the Straw Hats that Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece, has answered in the Q&A portion attached to some manga chapters, called an SBS. I like to call those answers "Straw Hat Fun Facts" and I love them, because they work really well if you want to flesh out your OC and give them a bit more life and depth.

So, even if you're not planning on making your OC a Straw Hat, these questions might still be helpful for you to think about.

The way I'm gonna structure this post for the sake of avoiding spoilers is I'm gonna list all current LA Straw Hats with their facts and all future confirmed Straw Hats will have their facts mentioned without their name, if it makes sense to mention them. That way you can avoid duplicates within the crew if you want to do that and still have no clue about who's gonna join. I'm also gonna comment on how the various fun facts apply to the live action adaptation wherever applicable.

If you're looking for people's birthdays, I'm gonna make another post about them, don't you worry. But you won't find them here.

Animal Resemblances

Luffy: Monkey

Zoro: Shark/Tiger

Nami: Cat

Usopp: Armadillo/Chameleon

Sanji: Duck/Bighorn Sheep

Others: Reindeer, Red Panda, Crane, Falcon, Bull, Rhinoceros, Horse, Giraffe, Whale Shark, Bear

I don't think any of them were mentioned or referenced just yet in the live action, aside from Luffy's name having the word Monkey in it, but that doesn't count. I'm pretty sure we'll get some hints in the future though since these just have such great potential for easter eggs.

Specific Numbers

Now, this is a category that's a bit more complicated because each Straw Hat has at least two signature numbers, for very different reasons. Everyone has a main number based on when they joined, with Luffy being number 1. The second number is the same but it skips Luffy, making Zoro number 1, but this version is rarely used, if ever at all. Then there's the possibility of a Straw Hat getting a number assigned to them based on a pun, whether that be based on their name, their devil fruit, or something entirely different. I'll explain pun numbers in a bracket.

Luffy: 01, 56 (go-mu)

Zoro: 02/01

Nami: 03/02, 73 (na-mi)

Usopp: 04/03

Sani: 05/04, 32 (san-ji), 59 (ko-kku = cook)

Others: 06/05 - 10/09, 110, 87, 26, 43

Now, you may ask: "Evie, I wanna have a pun number for my OC, how do they work?" I got you, buddy. You can make your own pun numbers using a technique called goroawase, using this handy chart I made based on a Wikipedia chart. Everything I added is in (brackets) and consists of variants that would technically be possible due to my own understanding of goroawase, but might not be commonly used.

On a very basic level, all you have to do to create your pun number is to grab the readings from this table and glue them together. I took some work off your shoulders by adding the phonetic changes you can use, indicated by the arrows. You can also only use the first syllable of a reading or add or remove an n at the end of readings that end in vowels or n's. As you can see whith Sanji's ko-kku, you can duplicate consonants, and you can also turn short vowels into long vowels (tsu -> tsū, for example), both for spelling reasons. If you need to transcribe a c, either use an s or a k (or whatever else fits), depending on the pronunciation.

Here are some examples with my OCs:

Cora: 96 (ko-ra) or 25510 (a-ka-i-to - would be very unusual due to its number of digits, but I think I'll use this as a plot device in a future fic!)

Luna: 67 (lu-na/ru-na)

Inari: 576 (i-na-ri) or 53 (ka-mi)

Specific Colors

This was in the live action! And I think we'll definitely see something similar again later.

You can't really see it that well but here are Luffy, Nami and Zoro lit up in their respective colors - red, orange and green respectively! I tried to take a better screenshot but, alas, Netflix will not let me.

Luffy: red (aka)

Zoro: green (midori)

Nami: orange (orenjī)

Usopp: yellow (kiiro)

Sanji: blue (ao)

Others: pink (pinku), purple (murasaki), light blue (mizuiro), white (shiro), black (kuro), ochre (ōdoiro)

As you can see, we pretty much have the whole rainbow here, which makes picking a unique color for your OC pretty hard, BUT it's completely allowed to use different shades of the same color (see: blue vs light blue), which is why I listed the Japanese color names for you. I did some digging and it turns out that these are the names of some of Japan's traditional colors. Those traditional colors don’t always match up with what my impression of the character's color is, BUT I made this handy little graphic for you:

In case there are any animal-related characters around and for those of you who like describing smells in their fanfic (me too, me too), this might be very useful!

These are all of the Straw Hats' specific colors (top row) according to the overview of Japanese traditional colors I linked for you above, their color names underlined with my perception of what color Oda might actually have been referring to, in modern terms. As for the grey names beneath orange and pink, those are the traditional colors from the overview that I used to replace the romanized English colors, based on what the first translation that popped up was. The columns directly underneath are a selection of different shades of the same color, also with their names. It just goes to show that you have a huge variety of colors to choose from for your OC - Japan's traditional colors alone are about 1,000 different colors and you can definitely play with hex codes some more. So, go wild!

Specific Smells

Luffy: meat

Zoro: steel (and probably blood, let’s be honest)

Nami: mikan (tangerines, essentially) and money

Usopp: gunpowder

I'd say everyone smells of the sea at least a little bit, realistically speaking, since they are pirates.

Sanji: cigarettes and seafood (and I'm willing to bet he wears some type of cologne or aftershave or something)

Favourite Type of Island and Season

Luffy: summer but he also loves snow, basically everywhere with meat

Zoro: autumn on an autumn island

Nami: summer on a spring island

Usopp: summer on an autumn island

Favourite Food

Sanji: a spoilery gag, so get creative!

We either directly see some of these in the live action or can easily guess.

Luffy: any kind of meat

Zoro: white rice (specifically in the shape of onigiri aka rice balls), sea beast meat, any food that compliments sake (though he's also pretty fond of beer, at least in the live action)

Nami: mikans (tangerines) and most other fruits

Usopp: pike from an autumn island and other fish of the season

Sanji: spicy sea food pasta, food that compliments black tea

Others: not really relevant but maybe interesting; cotton candy, chocolate, sweet stuff in general, sandwiches, not-too-sweet cakes, food that compliments coffee, basically anything that you can find at McDonald's, curry, mozoku seaweed with vinegar and fruits

Basically, Sanji gets to juggle around a whole lot of different flavours and cultural influences - and he does it really well and finds a way to make everything special, by the way! He generally favors the ladies in his cooking though.

Least Favourite Food

Even Sanji can't make them like everything. Their reasons for not liking something are very different, so they probably still eat it, especially if it's used in something Sanji prepared because he's their cook

Luffy: Cherry pie

Zoro: Chocolate (yes, chocolate! Adds a lot more depth to the scene of him eating Rika's rice balls, doesn't it?) - it's too sweet

Nami: orangette (candied orange peels) - she prefers actual fruit

Usopp: mushrooms - he got sick once

Sanji: konjac (Japanese konjac gel is usually made by mixing flour from the konjac plant with seaweed; it pretty much tastes like nothing and is used mainly for its texture) - it's not nutritious

Others: anything spicy, chewing gum, marshmallows, lemons, parfait

As a Family

This is part of the reason why Oda said there would be no romances within the crew in canon - but this is fandom, he has no power here. Feel free to ignore any of these roles and substitute canon with your own

Now, this is interesting, because these played a part in how the Straw Hats were cast for the live action!

Usopp: unspecified African (his actor is Jamaican-American, so it sort of checks out)

Sanji: French (Sanji's actor is very international, but he's not French - I do believe Sanji is still supposed to be at least part French in the live action though, at least he still has an affinity for the language and he may very well have grown up multilingual)

Inner Brain

Typical Hours of Sleep

The only reference to this we have in the live action is Zoro's habit of napping. An interesting thing to note is that the Straw Hats' sleep schedules largely coincide in just such a way that someone is always awake - except for during one hour. Maybe this really is a coincidence or maybe this is a habit they built while travelling together. They do still have night watches though, I believe. But that means there's usually always someone to keep the night watch company :)

Luffy: no set time, but usually sleeps around 5 hours

Zoro: 4am to 7am (3 hours) + naps

Nami: 11pm to 7am (8 hours)

Usopp: 1am to 8am (7 hours)

Sanji: 12am to 5am (5 hours)

In conclusion, more than half of the crew has no idea what a healthy sleep schedule is. This is a pattern that's gonna continue, by the way...

Suitable Careers

Basically what careers they would have if they weren't pirates. Their actual careers in-universe also don't count.

Luffy: firefighter

Zoro: police officer (I will not accept this slander)

Cooking Specialities

What are they best at cooking? According to Usopp in the live action, none of the guys besides Sanji can even boil water, so I'm willing to assume Sanji may have taught them a little. A lot. Not Luffy though. He's still a disaster.

Luffy: raw meat on a plate

Zoro: sashimi - a dish consisting of variously cut raw fish and meat

Nami: roasted duck with mikan sauce

Usopp: fish and chips

Sanji: literally anything, but he prefers seafood

I'd be willing to bet that the Straw Hats' alcohol tolerances got toned down in the live action, or at least Zoro's, judging by him stating how he woke up under a table once. With his manga-level tolerance, he would have had to drink gallons worth of alcoholic beverages before that happened. Still, I think the ranking holds up.

And finally one last bit that doesn't really fit anywhere else:

Sanji is currently the most qualified to give the crew a haircut. This makes sense if you read about his alternative career choice earlier and due to him generally putting a lot of thought into appearances.

Luffy is about as clueless on cultures as I am

Given that he has never noticed the fact that Kid is very clearly punk, and that Law has had some inclination towards being emo, I doubt he’d notice much unless he happened to stumble upon it himself

If he walks into a room and sees their collection of animal skulls, he’ll probably feel a little confused

“Eh? Would you do the same to Brook?”

Cue a lengthy explanation that no, no killing is involved, and that this is all 100% moral

He’s very easily impressed though, so if they show him a slightly morbid artwork that particularly fascinates them, they’ll have him hooked

If they even go as far to give him a real shark tooth necklace, for example, he’ll cherish it forever (bit of a hoarder of junk, really, so they’re enabling him even more)

Another one who’s pretty oblivious to one’s interests, but this one’s most likely due to his come-what-may attitude towards life (pretentious ass mf /lh)

Zoro doesn’t get put off in the least by what others might find gruesome, though he does jump a little when he sees a bunch of bones on their nightstand

Afterwards he becomes pretty immune to it, and might even have a somewhat morbid fascination with their entire collection

The swordsman absolutely hates the cold, so if they gift him a lovely pelt-turned-coat for the winter he might just feel his heart melt in his chest

It becomes just as precious to him as Wado Ichimonji (after all, we all know how sentimental Zoro is when it comes to receiving gifts), even if he would rather die than admit it

Sanji’s used to the slight morbidity—after all, Robin’s wild imagination made him rather immune to these sorts of things

However, he’s still a little put-off by the whole concept, no matter how hard they try to convince him that there’s no immorality involved in the process of collection; he’s the friendliest crewmember towards animals and still shivers every time he stumbles upon a piece in their collection

He does admire their devotion to the hobby, though, and wouldn’t dare shame them for it (considering that every single Strawhat has an odd quirk or two, himself included)

Other aspects though he’s totally fine with, since he knows that making pelts and jewelry out of animal parts is pretty expected of anyone, let alone someone who likes doing that

So while he avoids their collection of preserved bones in their drawers, he might find himself dearly treasuring a fur jacket or a ring carved out of bones that they’ve gifted him

Usopp would absolutely scare himself silly the first time he stumbles upon the skull on the bookshelf, screaming at the top of his lungs

After having terrified the poor man, they laugh and explain that this is part of a hobby of theirs, and that there isn’t any actual killing involved

There’s no way he’ll ever grow fond of the preserved-skeleton aspect of it, but if they give him a simple bracelet made of smaller bones and prettily painted, he’ll grow to like it

Their best shot at winning him over is to show him a heavily detailed and stunning work of art; only then would he appreciate the time and effort put into it, no matter how terrifying the ideas of decay and death might be to him

He might even secretly hang up one they’ve gifted him on the wall of his workshop, and though it sometimes startles him, he likes to admire it every now and then

The artist in him is ooh’ing and ahh’ing but the scaredy cat in him is literally shaking in his boots

Tough as Franky is, even he gets a little spooked sometimes, so he might jump a little at first, but that’s about it

Another lover of the arts and efforts put into anything handmade, he’ll express his awe at how super well-made the paintings are, and might even ask to look at them

He does enjoy lavish jewelry, so thy initially thought he’d think the ones made of bones and paws wouldn’t be worth much attention, but—to their pleasant surprise—he was fascinated by them and even borrowed them on occasions

Franky sometimes knocks himself out in his workshop, so if they made him a nice rug made out of 100% natural fur, he’d greatly appreciate it whenever he dozes off ontop of it

Given how compassionate he is and how much he values life, he’s glad that the methods used for acquiring all the bones and pelts were completely natural and moral—nothing else matters; he has a penchant for being attracted to people with odd hobbies and interests anyways

As we all know, Brook (ironically enough) scares himself shitless the moment he sees anything even remotely frightening, like zombies and skeletons

After his initial cry of terror, he calms down upon learning that these were obtained through perfectly legal, moral, and natural ways, and were even beautified to look pleasing to the eye

He’ll still be a little jumpy every time he spots a skull or preserved bone, but—much like Franky—he’ll be very happy with receiving them in the form of jewelry; after all, he does like decking himself in extravagant outfits and accessories

Here’s a hint: they should give him a fox-fur scarf to replace the faux boa he already has, so every time he snuggles up to him he could swear he could feel the warmth he’s gone decades without

And though he might not be that well-versed on art, he’ll definitely frame any (slightly disturbing) paintings they give him

Jinbe has seen everything and anything at this point, so nothing surprises him much anymore

He was rather curious himself, and quite pleased to know that there was no bloodshed involved in the process; for someone who’s spent almost his entire life staining his hands with blood he’s fond of the current respite and would rather avoid any more

But he would be grateful if they didn’t have any marine life among their collection—after all, he’s got quite a close connection to all that dwells underwater, and would feel uncomfortable to see them so lifeless and stripped of everything like that

He’s not entirely opposed to a necklace or a bracelet made of tiny bones, though, and if he did receive one as a gift from them, it’s unlikely that he would take them off

With a gentle smile on his face and a fond look in his eyes, he could listen to them talk about their hobby for hours, and absolutely will encourage them to do whatever they like

I’m sorry but Chopper would absolutely get traumatized if he ever spotted a preserved animal skull

Now why would anyone do that to his poor heart

Given that he’s a literal blue-nosed reindeer, any collection of animal bones is an absolute no-no for him; it hits way too close to home (even if he has typical human characteristics)

Morbid artworks might give him a near heart attack when he stumbles upon them for the first time, but he slowly becomes immune to them, and might even grow to like them a bit (kind of like he did with Brook)

It might reassure him a little to remind him that the entire process was ethical and did not involve personally harming any of the animals

Still, he’d rather not receive any skeletal jewelry; the most he’d go so far so as to accept would be a little fur coat, though he has no need for it honestly, given his own warm fur

Second to last after him would be Nami, given how she has an aversion to things that are even the slightest bit odd (it feels a lot like the whole Brook ordeal all over again, only more lifeless and off-putting)

She honestly doesn’t get what they find so fascinating about the hobby; she’d much rather admire the beauty of something more conventionally cute or pretty—still, she doesn’t shame them for it, much as she doesn’t understand them

Though she’s dead-set against going near any skeletons, and still isn’t entirely fond of the bone or paw jewelry, she’ll absolutely fawn over any fur clothes they offer her as a gift, and would go down protecting them with her life

She’s not too nitpicky about the ethics behind the process, but it’s impressive that no morals were compromised to produce them

The art might scare her quite a bit at first and she’ll impulsively scream on first sight, but after her heartbeat slows down once again she’ll be able to be a bit more appreciative of it, even if she’s not a huge fan of morbidity

Now, Miss Nico Robin might just go down on one knee and propose that very instant they find out about their hobby

It’s no secret that she’s a huge fan of all things weird and terrifying under the sun, and to find someone with a similarly odd interest just makes her smile in the most stunning way without even noticing

Any themes of decay being depicted in the paintings they have? She’ll absolutely hang them up right beside her bunk bed, and would spend her days reading while glancing up at the art to admire it

If they happen to give her any crystallized bones or animal parts in a necklace or ring, she will swear to never take it off, and would definitely fall asleep wearing it (truthfully, she feels a little uneasy without it)

She already was very fond of animal furs, and liked decking herself in their various shades, but knowing that no animal was intentionally harmed to obtain the ones they gift her makes her feel especially grateful for the coats and scarves

Idea for an Oc ONE PIECE villain for your selkie au

Couldn’t think of a name tho

Scummy is a slaver devil fruit user (marine marine no mi: grants the user the ability to manipulate and hypnotize marine life: fish, sharks, whales. This ability also works on fish men, mermaids and selkie). He uses this ability to capture fish men and occasionally mermaids. He was one of the first people to figure out yasopp was a selkie (this was before the red hair pirates became super infamous). He attempted to kidnap yasopp so he could sell him off. But because yasopp was able to fight him off scummy fell in love with him (more like became obsessed with him) but the red hairs easily beat him and got their sniper back.

Cut to years later and scummy learned about the straw hats sniper, (and son of yasopp) usopp. He decided that he must have usopp and kidnappes him. Of course usopp gets away and scummy gets his ass kicked.

I love this so much!!!!!!

Scummy is abt the same age as Smoker, so a year older than Yasopp and younger than Shanks. He was in the same platoon as Smoker but Smoker got his devilfruit and started rising much faster, so Scummy was trying to petition for a devilfruit as well when he met him.

In Loguetown, Red-hair Shanks (who was already causing trouble in the grand line for abt 5 years) was spotted, and the platoon rolled out. Most of them were shot down before they could even get close enough to aim their own muskets, leaving Scummy and a few others with Smoker leading the charge. Then Scummy met the eyes of the new, previously unknown crewmate. And Yasopp was gorgeous, so much so Scummy almost didn't see the gun he was also staring down the barrel of. A flick of hesitance, sudden fear in Yasopp's expression, and the barrel shot downward, hit Scummy in the calf, and Scummy fell in both senses.

Headquarters gave Scummy a fruit they couldn't identify, likely because he was low enough rank to be a labrat. Suddenly he could control every fish in the sea, and started traveling while Smoker, that sniveling bastard stayed captain of Loguetown. Scummy gained traction, an epiphet, and after half a decade he finally saw Yasopp again.

Scummy almost thought his own memory had failed him but he was still just as beautiful as the first time he saw him. Yasopp nearly shot him again, but Scummy said "Stop!" and Yasopp stopped. A similar flicker of fear to that of five years ago. Scummy was confused. Yasopp turned to run before Scummy ordered him "Stay." Scummy walked closer, Yasopp was shaking - a look in his eye like an old veteran. "You're marine life?" Yasopp started shaking harder. Scummy put a finger under his chin so Yasopp would look at him with those sharp black eyes. "Are you a merman, sweetheart?" He cooed, Yasopp looked like he wanted to kill him - adorable. "Show me your tail, baby." Scummy muttered, but instead of his legs meshing into a tail, he slowly pulled a sealskin from the bag on his back. Scummy's eyes widened. Selkies were rare beyond reason, a marvel almost no one would ever be able to see in a dozen lifetimes.

And Yasopp was his.

But then from one blink to the next, Red-hair's hand was on Yasopp's shoulder with an absolutely scathing look on his face, and Scummy's vision cut out.

Learning that not only did Yasopp have a son - the Selkie God - but that that son was also a pirate? Also fair game? And on a crew less than three years old full of children under 25? Well, Scummy was always a gambling man, and if he couldn't have Yasopp yet, Usopp would do.

ok im starting ti write a plot for a one piece dating sim, but for now some straw hat hcs!!!

sanji used to make onigiri shaped like animals cuz it made luffy laugh, but he stopped when chopper joined because he felt bad

one time usopp bet luffy that he couldnt be a vegetarian for a week and he (stupidly) took the bet, sanji came out with lunch 10 minutes later and he forgot

robin and usopp really like fucking w law when he had the alliance w them. usopp would do stupid things w luffy and chopper like put saran wrap at the front of his bedroom door, or whoppie cushions, and robin would tell him the crew is secretly cannibals or shit, since she always says it w a straight face law believed it for like a week

robin paints her memories w the strawhats, their usually very graphic though

zoro once slept outside during a bad hurricane and caught the worst cold ever, nami wonders how hes alive

for peoples bdays nami takes 1000 berries off their debt

since brook is like 90, he has some old ppl traits, like sometimes he wears plaid flat cap or plays bingo when their at a new island

one time the whole crew had a day where tried different beverages to fuel franky, they all agreed cola was the best tho (luffy was very entertained by the capri sun one though)

luffy was looking thru choppers bag once and found a thing of medical marijuana, he ate it and then stared into the distance for 2 hours. to this day it was the most peaceful day the strawhats have ever had (usopp did try throwing things at him to get him to respond tho, it was p funny)

sanji was concerned he'd have to stop making seafood when jinbei joined but then jinbei told him he was a shark fishman and it was ok (that did not stop robin from telling law it was proof theyre cannibals)

jinbei does crossword puzzles! he knows a lot of niche facts about anything and everything. him and robin like to trade facts a lot

during the time skip, sanji and zoro both learned how to do makeup and nails (for perona and ivankov) during their weekly crew long sleepovers they like to have battles of who does it better, with luffy and usopp as their models. everyone else judges and after they do facemasks and watch a movie (luffy tried to eat his facemask multiple times)

I decided to Sonic style characters again, and yep, I decided to Sonic style the Straw Hat pirates from One Piece. My OP obsession is still coming in at full force and I had the idea to Sonic style the main cast after doing a sketch of Chopper in this style. I kind of happen to enjoy Sonic styling characters I like you know? It's fun to draw in the Sonic style. Here's all ten:

Luffy is a hedgehog for obvious reasons so no explanation needed. I also decided to convert Luffy's Fifth Gear from the Wano Country arc into a Super form for my Sonic styled version of the Straw Hat captain. Gears Second, Third, and Fourth would alter his body while Fifth is his Super form. I always get Hyper Sonic vibes from Gear Five Luffy in general and yet I tend to call it Luffy's Super form lol.

I'm not the best at drawing blades, so that's why I didn't draw them on my Sonic design for Zoro. Just letting you all know as a heads up. Roronoa Zoro was easy to choose a species for: a wolf. It just suits his fighting spirit and rough around the edge personality.

Like Luffy, Nami is also a hedgehog. She was interesting to design since I don't exactly put inappropriate content onto my page. I gave her justice though, and that's all that matters!

Originally I was gonna do something else for the sniper god himself, but after watching Water 7 and see the man go through an Infinite phase before rejoining his friends as his altered ego Sogeking to help rescue Nico Robin from Enies Lobby, I knew that Usopp(aka my second favorite character with Chopper being my first)had to be a jackal. He was fun to design, but was just as complex as Franky.

The last of the East Blue crew is Sanji, and he was the most fun to design out of all of them. He happens to be my favorite that I've done, and I'm too proud of his design! If you're wondering, he's a bat.

I did two designs for my Sonic version of Chopper, my favorite One Piece character. The left one is my first sketch, and the right is one I did of him in one of his iconic Rumble Ball poses. It would of been a crime if I didn't do him in a Rumble Ball pose of some kind; he works really well in the Sonic style in my opinion!

A bit more on the simple side, but I couldn't get the thought of Nico Robin being a cat out of my mind. Here she is in advance! Of course I had to pull off her iconic pose as well.

I'm gonna be real. Franky was the hardest to design. I couldn't at first think of an animal that best suited him, but I chose a fox to be his species due to his intelligence as a shipwright. I was gonna do him in his iconic pose, but oh well. I'll try again next time.

I don't know why but Brook is always so hard for me to come up with because of him being the skeletal musician of the Straw Hats. I ended up choosing an owl for this guy because I figured a nocturnal animal of some kind would best suit him. He actually turned out to be easy to design, so that's less pressure on me.

The final Straw Hat member Sonic styled is Jinbei! I know he's not like Arlong and his men, but you have to remember that Jinbei is also a fishman and that any kind of sea predator would suit him. A shark especially. That's what I designed him as. This also is my first attempt at designing a Sonic shark as well.

That's about everything I have to share, but I'll be Sonic styling some Chopper forms next!

Okay I finally got everything decided for the merfolk Straw Hats! I’ll be tagging everything related to this as ‘merfolk au’.

Luffy is a bull shark. Hear me out on this one. This shark is a voracious eater and an extremely strong predator. They’re also capable of surviving in freshwater for surprisingly long periods of time, which I think compliments Luffy’s adventurous nature. They also sometimes fight crocodiles, which I just happened to find funny.

For Zoro, I think the green moray eel would be fitting. I know swordfish is the obvious choice, but I wanted to do something different. These fish are aggressive and vicious fighters. Nami is a flame angelfish. A gorgeous fish that is known for having a temper. They’re also expensive in the fishkeeping hobby, which is very on brand for Nami.

Usopp is an indo-pacific sailfish. Between them being one of the fastest fish in the ocean and their long nose, it’s a perfect fit.

Sanji is a pelagic thresher shark, a fierce fighter that uses its tail as its main weapon. They’re also very athletic, capable of swimming at high speeds and breeching out of the water.

Chopper is a reindeer that ate the mer-mer fruit and became a blue spotted pufferfish merman. I chose this one because the defense mechanism fits his scaredy cat personality, and also because this fish doesn’t get along with members of its own species very well.

Robin is a mimic octopus. They can change colors, as well as alter the length and texture of their legs, which I think works well with her devil fruit ability. They’re also masters at hiding which suits her well.

Franky is a peacock mantis shrimp. These guys are very intelligent, and their strong armor and unique attacks suit Franky’s cyborg status nicely. Their colorful appearance and blue head is also fitting to such a colorful and boisterous character.

Tartar sauce being the sweetest kitty in the world. (He not. He's still an asshole)

He's slowly growing to love his crewmates. When ever roux eats, he eats. He carries an extra piece of meat just for him, he's on his shoulder being fed.

They don't have a lot of toys on the ship but lime juice likes to play with him using his staff darting it back and forth He swipes and chase it.

When ever Hugo is working making medicine or researching, tartar sauce would sit on his lap under the table purring quietly

He likes to do this thing you know when cats do with their owners. They're walking and they run right in front of them and collapse under their feet for stomach rubs

If he's already lying on the deck and someone walks by he bats at their pants legs

He doesn't eat cat food like regular cats he usually gets scraps of meat, fish and vegetables and an egg mixed in fish oil. (He eats better than my cat honestly)

His favorite napping/ hiding places are the laundry baskets when they're clean and warm especially

The top bunk bed (yasopp's bed)

Snake's office under his desks he likes to shred up old or messed up mapping paper

The crows nest

And of course on his yasopp's shoulders/lap/ stomach just him in general

And under Shanks his bed surprisingly

Yasopp likes to hold him and cradle him especially at night if he can't sleep he walks around the ship with his cat in his arms cooing and cuddling him. (Tartar sauce weighs about the same as a 5 month baby. Yasopp left around 5 months after usopp was born sooooo)

He has a long fur coat which means hair balls a lot of them if they catch it quickly they hover him over the edge of the ship so it lands in the water

Sometimes they forget even though he's nice to them, he's not nice to other people. He's still considered a mean cat so whenever a stranger is on the ship they always have to warn them about tartar because he will scratch you if you approach him.

He doesn't like sharks that's already established. He hisses and swats at him he also peed on his cape thing he likes to wear he has bad vibes. But he's not fond of usopp either, he doesn't like the straw hats in general some more than others (Luffy) but usopp....no

Tartar sauce sees himself as an only child he has no siblings he doesn't care. Every time usopp visits he's not happy he hates that he steals yasopp's attention and the other red hairs as well. He would try to hiss at him or go after him but he's usually stopped because Usopp always brings Luffy with him and he spends most of the visit being man handled by his forceful petting and smothering.

That cat is better raised and taken care of than most characters in this show and I appreciate that because cats deserve the world and all the love they can get. You mess with Tartar Sauce and you mess with the whole crew but, like, the cat can defend himself. Look at him. He gives zero fucks. In fact, that cat is who protects the crew.

luffy: no

he has a rubber paramecia devil fruit that lets him stretch and shrug off blunt force attacks and he was trained by a marine vice-admiral. he would probably discover one of his iconic attacks and kill me to the main theme

zoro: no

this boy is literally introduced as already being skilled enough to beat grown trained adults in sword duels. granted they're all done with wooden katanas but do you want to even imagine fighting this boy with real swords and being told he's allowed to fight you with them

usopp: no

people say yes and because usopp is largely cowardly when it comes to the small stuff i have reason to believe i could probably win by staring at him too angrily and causing him to come down with "can't-fight-this-guy" disease on the spot. but also when it's down to the wire usopp is always very brave when he truly needs to be and is also famously crafty as hell when he fights and has a pain tolerance and durability on par with a guy literally made of rubber if not moreso. if he thinks he has nothing to lose then he will throw in the towel effortlessly but if he thinks he has no other choice i am going to get slowly bodied to death by a shivering boy with a slingshot that keeps getting up no matter what

sanji: no

trained by ex-new world pirate red-leg zeff and took to black leg style like a fish to water. he would crack my skull open in five seconds flat

nami: no

nami is a traumatized impoverished child knowingly being used as a gofer and cartographer for a criminal organization that killed her mom right in front of her and somehow has the reasonable hope that she can indeed fix everything on her own. i don't care what anyone says i am NOT fighting a child with enough guts to steal from pirates what the FUCK. i think she would stab me in the throat with no hesitation if she thought it would help her get rid of arlong faster

chopper: no

chopper is a reindeer with human thought patterns and he can shapeshift into a fully grown muscular humanoid creature if he wanted to he could crush me into a puddle of gore. he won't bc that's horrific and he wants to be a doctor but he would probably just immediately shift to heavy point (human form) and grab me by the throat and toss me into a wall and we're done here

robin: no

she can literally just kill you at any moment as long as you are in her field of vision and have a rigid spine and trachea bc she will just snap your neck from anywhere. yeah the arms are little kid arms but she probably just spawns four instead of two

franky: no

he would hit me with a wooden plank he found on the ground and i would die instantly

One Piece Chapter 1065 - Initial Thoughts

And we are back from the break to jump into another chapter of the Vegapunk arc

Red is out in more theaters (I still haven't watched it though which is painstaking), and it's a round number chapter after a break which means something is going down.

Let's see what Oda has for us this week

Spoilers for the Chapter, Support the Official Release

Cover page is a Red colorspread of the Straw Hats, Red Hair's 'Top Officers', Koby, Oven and Katakuri, with Uta in the middle

Zoro and Brook note their reason of staying to start with, since it's a Government island they are keeping their guard up and staying back to help bail the others out

Caribou is still on-ship, but he doesn't want to be dropped off on a Government island, even though they agreed to drop him off to the next island

Zoro isn't having his bargaining though, he thanks Caribou for helping Luffy (in a soft manner) and says bye

The Lab group marvel at the use of escalators

Seems that Vegapunk is powering everything by fire (fire being a key element of the story) but natural resources to burn are limited

Lilith is looking into options though, she would love to create her own Sun, not sure if literal or metaphorical

Lilith walks through an entire wall too, is it a hologram?

As Lilith talks to Edison, the Straw Hats also try to grasp this door, which returns to being solid when they go through it

Edison is now chatting with the group via comms

Nami back into burglar mind, it has been a while since she stole anything

Usopp gets a future kick for calling Nami 'either a child or an old hag'

Oh...Seraphim Jinbe

Since they've never seen a Seraphim they try to understand what's going on; actual Jinbe? Long lost son? Coincidence?

Franky though knows it's a Pacifista

The irony that Zoro - the only one of the group who has fought a Lunarian - isn't here to fight the Seraphim

Realising they've been lured into a trap ('tis a Government island after all) the group enter battle stations

Oh...Jinbe has Senor Pink's powers!?

Is it just replication or is Senor Pink dead? Because the Mihawk and Boa Seraphim didn't have fruit powers

Seems Seraphim Jinbe has the Star eyes

With Nami in its clutches, Sanji hits a Diable Jambe Vega Shoes and all

Giant Naked Kaiju Robin also comes out for some more Fishman Karate attacks

Seraphim Jinbe can use Fishman Karate too, so Usopp uses Skull Bombgrass to attack but again it keeps using the Swim Swim powers to escape

Now with Usopp in its clutches, Franky aims for a Radical Beam

Seems the Jinbe Seraphim is called 'S-Shark'

Of course Edison and Lilith are watching the battle unfold, had a feeling it was more of a test run for both the Straw Hats and the Seraphim

Naturally, Edison's design is unexpected, tiny little creature

Edison laments that the Seraphim hasn't been tested for lasers, it also causes Lilith to go a little more feral about the cost

Edison though runs off to have more ideas, leaving Pythagoras - also very robot looking - to collect the battle data

Still kinda hoping Edison's a fraud just because of historic reasons but he gets catto assistants so that's already unfair

We also see York, who is being the Punks' feeder it seems, hive mind and hive stomach I guess

Pythagoras notes how the lineage factor of the Seraphim adapts during the fight, but does that mean that S-Shark recognizes his crew? Or is there like a DNA cutoff point and this was before Jinbe met Luffy?

Also Pythagoras is tiny, he's just got an extra remote body

How can you use the bathroom you're a cue ball with arms??

York again seems to be the bodily needs one, thinned down to regular size and taking a nap

Shaka arrives to call off the Seraphim, and make sure his fellow Punks have had their fill (Lilith remains annoyed that there was not enough bloodshed)

I FUCKING CALLED IT! The Vega Shoes do have restrictive capabilities, since the Lab group are magnetically locked to the floor

Usopp's had it to here with all the people saying they're Vegapunk

"Do you think this island looks like the future?" ...Oh.

Even though Franky's fanning out, Shaka reveals that this is an island of the past

As Luffy's group discovers (Luffy carrying a pipe as his walking stick) with an overgrown mecha, the technology of Egghead isn't new

This is technology from an Ancient Kingdom 900 years ago: Void Century period

Of course Luffy sees something gigantic and wants to play with it XD

Welp, couple of Theory Confirmed moments here

JoyBoyTheories entertained the idea that Vegapunk was being targeted for death because he, like the ancient kingdom, was growing too advanced and the WG prefer to keep the best tech only for themselves, and it seems he was onto something there.

Also I'm still buzzed that my Dom Shoes theory was right like the immediate chapter after XD

We got to see the rest of the Punks too. Honestly, I feel weird about the fact that Oda made all the male Punks look like robots while the female Punks all look like humans (or at least humanoid in Atlas' case). It's not a bad design but it is unusual, at first I thought it was something like the earlier ones look more like robots but Lilith is 02 so that went quickly out of the window. We'll see how it goes though, Shaka does pose an imposing figure and York seems to be the black sheep somewhat - it seems like they use her to bypass other bodily needs and keep working, which would mean if CP0 kill her it'd probably be immediately noticed by the others. I dunno I think I'm still a little thrown that Edison and Pythagoras look like Eggman minions.

Caribou being let off the ship is probably unwise, he is a thief after all, plus it is the last slither of Carrot hope I have because it still pisses me off if we're leaving her ending like that.

Seraphim Jinbe using Senor Pink's Devil Fruit opens a new can of worms about who the World Government have at their disposal, is it really just Warlords? And are they replicating, homaging or using Devil Fruits? The fact that they sent a Jinbe Seraphim means there was definitely a play to not only see how the crew reacted to fighting a child version of their crewmate but to see if any lineage factor impulses have come to play.

The Laputa energy is not lost on me either, my favourite Ghibli movie is getting a lot of similarities in this arc, mainly revolving around the super advanced ancient civilization and near-indestructible mechas, plus we literally have a pirate gang and the government getting involved too, all we need is Franky to do a flex-off with someone.

Simply put Oda's left a lot on the board to sink our teeth into, but still never enough answers to them
