you mean the world to me
(gender neutral) reader x wonwoo
genre: fluff + angst; words: 7k
(i’ve found i write for wonwoo in times of academic panic and if ever there was a time of academic panic, this is it)
Tumblr media
You didn’t see Wonwoo at all on the morning everything changed. His side of the bed was empty when you got out of the shower, and your keys were missing from the hook. Maybe that was your first clue that something was up. His set still hung there innocently, the tiny bear charm you’d gotten him on your two year anniversary swinging lightly on the breeze from the AC unit.
You shrugged and picked up the keys. This wasn’t the first time he’d grabbed the wrong set, and it probably wouldn’t be the last.
(your second clue was that the door was unlocked)
You called him on your lunch break to tease him about the keys, but it went to voicemail. That in itself wasn’t odd; usually if he was in a frenzy working on some idea he’d forget to check his phone, but it was sort of odd that it didn’t even ring.
You shrugged that off too. Maybe he forgot it at the apartment, and it died. He’d never forgotten it before, but there was a first time for everything.
You finally accepted something was wrong when you stopped by the bookstore with coffee and it was closed. And dark.
He always had the front light on when he was inside.
Hours later, as you paced around the apartment trying to work out whether or not to call the police, you heard the jangle of your keys in the lock. You swung the door open before he’d even unlocked it, heart in your throat.
“There you are! I was worried, where have you been, why weren’t you answering your phone?”
Your questions died in your throat as you looked him over. He looked exhausted.
“Wonwoo,” you said, softly, “are you okay?”
He visibly forced a smile. “Yeah,” he said.
You opened the door wider, and he hesitated before he came in. He hovered in the entryway, like a stranger in his own apartment (the one you picked out together).
You sat down on the couch, and he followed you to the living room, but he sat in the guest chair instead of his usual place beside you. He didn’t speak, just looked around the room as if he’d never been in it before. Finally, you were the one to break the silence.
“Do you want to talk about it?”
He looked at you, appearing to consider his words carefully (as he does, of course, he’s a songwriter).
“If you woke up in a stranger’s bed, in a life you don’t recognize, what would you do?”
You blinked. “Like those Hallmark movies?”
“Hallmark movies?”
“Yeah, it’s a huge trope in like the Christmas movies? Somebody runs into a Santa character and one way or another they make a wish and then Santa slaps them into an alternate universe where usually they’re married with several children or something, and they learn the true meaning of Christmas.” You made jazz hands.
He wrinkled his nose. “I don’t think Christmas is involved.”
“Are you saying you weren’t some rich businessman in your past life?” you teased. “I could see it, you know.”
“But if you were in that situation,” he pressed. “What would you do?”
You thought about that. “I guess I’d go with it,” you said. “Try to figure out who I am in the new life and make the most of it.”
“You wouldn’t try to go back?”
“I don’t see how I could figure it out, unless I recognized the Santa character on my initial run to all the places I used to know and talked to them about it.”
He groaned. “Please let’s not call them the Santa.”
You weren’t sure if he was joking until he smiled, and you relaxed.
“Well that’s what they are,” you defended, maybe a little too quickly, but he didn’t seem to notice.
“Can they not be wish granters? Or guardian angels or something? Not all of the stories are to do with the true meaning of Christmas.”
You shrugged. “I know you’re the writer here but your storytelling experience pales in comparison to my extensive knowledge of Hallmark movie tropes.”
He leaned forward. “I’m a writer?”
You forced yourself to laugh like he was making a joke even though something in your chest went tight.
(he chose to sleep on the couch that night and even though you were upset that he wasn’t next to you in the bed, some strange part of you was glad for the distance)
You called out of work the next day to walk Wonwoo to the bookstore, citing stress at your significant other going missing for most of a day. Seungcheol was understanding, telling you not to worry, that he’d see you Monday.
Vernon was leaning against the wall by the door when you came up, messing with something on his phone.
“Hey,” he said, glancing at your partner. “I was worried; it’s not like you to be late.”
Wonwoo was quiet for an odd amount of time, long enough that you glanced over at him. He was staring at Vernon with some odd look in his eyes.
“We got a late start,” you finally answered for him. “After yesterday. . .” You coughed. “Anyway, you guys need any help setting up?”
“Probably, yeah, we just got a shipment of that new YA series the other day,” Vernon said. You step to one side, motioning Wonwoo up the steps to unlock the door. “Maybe you shelve those while I blow the dust off the front desk. She’s not used to being unused this long.”
You laughed, too loud. “It was a day.”
“I know, it was ages.”
(you didn’t comment on how Wonwoo had to try three keys from the ring before getting the door open, or how he looked at the inside of his own bookstore like it was a wondrous new place. Vernon didn’t seem to notice)
You dragged the box out to the shelves and started placing the books. Apparently Vernon had forgotten how well voices carried in the quiet space, because you could hear him speaking as if he were next to you when he said, “Hey, man, did you two fight?”
“What?”
You could imagine Vernon’s shrug, heard him fiddling with the crack in his phone case. “I don’t know, it’s just, usually you two are pretty much inseparable, but like, yesterday you totally go off the grid and now today there’s a whole sidewalk between you.” A floorboard creaked. “I know it’s probably not really my business, y’know since I just work the front desk and all, but, I thought I’d ask.”
The pause stretched out so long you found yourself frozen, breath caught in your lungs, hand hovering above the next book, waiting.
“I’m adjusting,” Wonwoo said finally. “I’m a different person than I was two days ago.”
It was an answer and a non-answer all at once and it implied more than it clarified. You picked up the book and slotted it onto its place in the shelf, above the carefully written label. You didn’t mention the conversation when you brought the box back. You made an excuse about going for coffee and bolted out the door.
(usually the bookstore felt welcoming, an extension of your significant other, but the atmosphere was stifling and foreign and you couldn’t stay)
Thankfully, Seokmin had the morning shift, and you arrived during a dead period. He was able to sit with you as you nursed your drink and fretted aloud over everything that happened.
“It’s like I blinked and he was a total stranger,” you said. “I don’t know what I did.”
“Maybe it wasn’t anything you did?” he offered. “Maybe he just changed.”
“It’s just so weird.” You cupped your hands around your drink. “I mean, I know people say that by the end of a long lasting relationship your significant other changes enough to be a bunch of different people, but it happened overnight. Like he went to sleep as a writer, and my--” you choke on boyfriend-- “significant other, and then he woke up and-- I mean aside from him still being named Wonwoo it’s like-- I don’t know who this man is anymore.”
“Maybe not,” Seokmin said agreeably.
“Wow,” you said, sipping your drink. “Stop hanging out with Jeonghan so much, you’re starting to sound like him.”
He laughed and nudged your shoulder. “What I’m saying is, maybe he feels strange and different, but that doesn’t have to matter. What matters is if you’re willing to find the pieces of him that you loved again. He can’t have changed that much underneath.”
He was right, no doubt. The awkward way Wonwoo had held himself the night before reminded you of the first time you’d ever really talked. He wasn’t so different, just undeveloped, like he’d jumped back in time. Like he’d crossed the multiverse from an existence where he’d never met you.
You could handle it. The situation was manageable. You could treat each interaction like you’d just met him for the first time. It could be easy, or it could be the hardest thing you’d ever faced, but you could handle it. Really.
(you texted Wonwoo asking if you should bring anything back for him and Vernon. his coffee order was different than the one you remembered)
You unlocked the door to the apartment that night. Wonwoo lingered in the hallway until you glanced back at him.
“You do anything at work today?” you asked.
He shook his head. “That office is a disaster. How did I ever find anything?”
You laughed, hanging up your keys. “Yeah, that’s what I’ve been saying basically since we bought the place.” You almost nudged his shoulder as you passed him on your way to the kitchen, but stopped the thought before it became a motion. “Keys on the hook,” you directed, “before you forget where you set ‘em.”
It took him two tries to find the right hook, but he got it. “I had to spend most of the morning organizing everything,” he said. “There’s so much stuff in there.”
“Let the record show that I’ve been telling you this was how it was gonna end up for years.”
“That’s the most long-winded way to say ‘I told you so’ I’ve ever heard.”
“What can I say? I like the sound of my own voice.” You pulled ingredients from the cupboards. “You remember where the pans are?”
“No,” he said.
“Neat.”
Making the food was the only easy part. Sitting at the table, you were acutely aware of him, like every one of your senses was waiting for something major to happen. Nothing did, though; you ate dinner in near complete silence. It wasn’t the comfortable silence you were used to. The air between you felt charged like the static balls at a science fair. You wanted to bridge the gap.
Wonwoo wanted to take the couch again, but you refused.
“Your turn in the bed,” you said, shooing him away. “You and I both know that couch doesn’t do the back any favors, and it’s your apartment too.”
“You don’t have to, I can--”
“Mom said it’s my turn on the couch,” you said in a high pitched, nasal tone, and then snickered, halfheartedly throwing a pillow at him. It flopped on the floor halfway between you. “I’ll be fine.”
He hovered in the doorway a few moments more, but relented in the end. “Goodnight,” he said, and made to close the door.
“Goodnight,” you said, and then, “you mean the world to me.”
The door clicked shut. You scooped up the pillow again and dropped it and yourself on the couch.
(it really is back pain in all forms and you woke up with cramps in muscles you didn’t even know you had, but it was worth it. it was always worth it)
You spent the weekend dancing around him, like planets. Like stars. Like if you got too close it would end in catastrophe.
Sometimes you’d slip into a back and forth with him that felt so familiar you could almost forget that you hardly knew him anymore, until you’d reference an old memory and he’d give you a quizzical look. It would sting, except the old memories felt strange to you now too. You didn’t mind not thinking about them, if it meant he didn’t look at you like that. Like a stranger.
The stranger you were.
You returned to work Monday and Seungcheol swung by your desk.
“How’s your boyfriend?” he asked. “He feeling better?”
You ignored the part of your stomach that twisted hearing boyfriend (that was what he was, after all, or what he had been, before Thursday; it shouldn’t feel so strange).
“I think so,” you said, because he’d put his keys on the right hook without you needing to remind him and he knew where all the cooking utensils were without needing to ask you.
Seungcheol rested his arms on the top of your cubicle. “And you? How are you holding up?”
You felt like you were hanging on by a thread. “Fine, I think. Pretty well, all things considered.”
He looked at you with concealed concern, but seemed to understand. You didn’t want to talk about it at work, even if Seungcheol had been one of your closest friends in university.
“Well, give me a call if you ever want to talk about it,” he said, and then left, probably for his own desk.
You bolted the moment time ticked over for your lunch break.
You didn’t know if Wonwoo would want you swinging by. You didn’t know if he’d answer your call. You called anyway, even if your hands shook.
He picked up.
“Hello?”
“Hey!” You wiped your palm on your shirt. “I’m out on lunch break; if you aren’t too busy maybe we could run get Chinese or something?”
There was a pause, and then, “Okay. Just let me make sure Vernon and Chan can handle the store.”
He met you out front, and you walked to the restaurant together.
It wasn’t too cold out, so you got the food to go and found a bench to sit at, watching people as they pass.
“You remember that game, where you pick somebody going by and try to guess what they’re doing?” you asked into the silence.
He hummed. “Maybe. Why, you want to do it now?”
You shrugged. “Might as well.”
Even though he’d seemed apprehensive, he took to the game quickly. He was the one to decide that the woman wearing heels with her paint splattered jeans was a street performer, on her way to meet up with the other members of her busking group. You countered that obviously, the man in the mask waiting impatiently to cross the street was on his way to manage a rambunctious group of idols.
“Can you imagine?” you asked, shaking your head. “Must be rough, having to keep some of those groups under control.”
Something odd tinged the edges of Wonwoo’s expression when you looked back over at him. You couldn’t tell what it was. You hadn’t been able to read his expressions for days. It should have scared you.
It didn’t.
“Must be rough,” he echoed, his voice hollow. You were caught between asking about it and pretending you hadn’t noticed when he pointed across the plaza at the fountain. “Bet that guy’s an idol.”
“Yeah?” You followed his hand to see a man standing by the fountain, staring up at the jets of water, his hands buried in the pockets of the long coat he wore.
“Yeah. He’s taking a break from the practice room to appreciate everything around him,” Wonwoo said. “He’s gonna go home to the other members of his group and they’re going to ask where he’s been and be worried.”
“What’s he going to tell them?”
Wonwoo leans back into the bench, and maybe a little bit into you.
“He’s going to tell them he was getting a new perspective,” he said. “That he’s seen life from a new angle. And. . .”
The silence stretched, but it was comfortable. His arm touched yours, resting there.
“And,” Wonwoo said, and his voice cracked, “that he missed them.”
You tore your gaze from the man at the fountain. Wonwoo stared into nothing, eyes wet.
“Are you okay?” you asked softly.
He didn’t look at you as he nodded. Maybe that was for the best. You could feel tears building in your own eyes. You didn’t even know why.
You missed them too.
The alarm on your phone went off.
“Ah,” you said. “I should get back to work.”
You stood, ignoring the chill on your arm where his had been.
“I’ll see you back at the apartment, yeah?” you said.
He looked at you, that time, standing. “Yeah,” he said.
You threw out your trash and offered him your arm gallantly. “Would you allow me to walk you back, sir?”
He laughed and tossed his own trash, taking your arm. “Sure.”
You walked him all the way back to the store, where you swept off an imaginary hat and dipped into a grossly exaggerated bow. You heard him laugh, and when you came back up he was smiling (you would do anything to see him happy).
“Alright, you’ve done your job,” he said.
You place a dramatic hand on your chest. “Are you implying that I did all that out of a sense of moral obligation?”
He snickered. “Well, when you put it that way.”
Whatever expression had made its way onto your face made him laugh, his face lighting up as he reached out for the doorway to steady himself. You broke into a smile, heart beating a little faster.
“Okay, I gotta go before I’m late.” You almost wanted to hug him goodbye, but something stopped you. You settled for a quick wave. “You mean the world to me, okay? I’ll see you after work!”
Friday, Wonwoo came in and barely hung up his keys (on the right hook) before tipping himself over the arm of the couch to flop face first into the cushions with a deep groan. You stared at his limp form from the kitchen, a tiny smile forming on your face.
“So, how was work?” you asked.
He mumbled something into the couch that might’ve been, “Peachy.” He flipped over. “Some woman decided we should be a bookstore and a coffee shop and made sure we knew it.”
You wince. “Yikes.”
“Yeah.” He ground his hands into his eyes. “I spent half my morning making sure she wasn’t taking it out on Vernon or Chan.”
“Well, if she didn’t get the kids then it’s all good.” You set down the spoon and moved into the other room, leaning on the back of the couch. “Shame Seungkwan wasn’t there, he’d have given her a real piece of his mind.”
“I would have let him. Not like I even wanted her to buy anything after she said that.” Wonwoo dropped his hands, one arm falling off the side of the couch. He gazed up at you.
“She can keep her condescending cash to herself,” you agreed, and reached out to mess with his hair.
And drew back just as quickly, your hand hardly brushing his hair before hastily retreating to grip your leg. Why did you do that? It was wrong, it was all wrong. Your face burned. You didn’t know him well enough you’d known him for years he was a stranger you’d played with his hair all the time in university, even before you’d made it official it felt wrong to do it it felt wrong to pull away--
Wonwoo sat up. “Hey, everything okay?”
“--Yeah.” You shook your head. “Just-- head rush.”
“You’re sure?”
“Yeah.” You tore yourself away from the couch, making for the counter again and ignoring the sting on your leg where you dug in your nails. You could hear him trailing you.
Wonwoo leaned on the counter as you picked up the spoon. For a moment, you thought he’d press you again.
“So,” he said, “how was work?”
Of course he wouldn’t push. He was Wonwoo.
“Fine,” you said, stirring the ramen in the bowl. “Same old story, really, except everyone was talking about the company dinner party Sunday.”
Wonwoo blinked. “You didn’t tell me there was a dinner Sunday.”
You dashed the spoon through the noodles with perhaps more vigor than strictly necessary. “I didn’t want to bother you. You know, since you haven’t been feeling well this week. It didn’t seem worth adding to your plate and it doesn’t seem like your scene.”
“It doesn’t seem like yours either.”
He was right; it wasn’t your scene. You always found yourself walking on eggshells every time, a glass of wine gripped in your hand that you never dared drink from out of fear of making a fool of yourself.
“It’s my job,” you said. Your next stir sent tiny dots of water into the air and you flinched back.
Wonwoo nudged you out of the way, taking up the spoon even as you pouted at him. “Well,” he said, “need a date?”
You blinked. “Are you volunteering?”
“Maybe,” he said. “You work for one of those fancy companies, right? They probably have all kinds of high society foods.”
“They do cover meal costs,” you admitted.
He scoffed. “And you were going to leave me eating ramen alone on my Sunday night?” He reached up and tousled your hair. “If you need moral support I’ll be there.”
Your heart swelled. “Jeon Wonwoo, you mean the world to me you godsend.”
He ducked his head, turning to the ramen again. “Hey, any guy would count himself lucky to be your plus one.” He nudged your elbow. “How about you grab a couple bowls out and we eat this on the couch? We can watch a movie or something.”
(you found your seat on the couch, your bowl nestled in your lap, and when he came to meet you he sat beside you)
Saturday you spent at the bookstore, shelving books, distracting Vernon, and waiting for Wonwoo to get off. Seungkwan stopped by with a deck of cards and in the spare moments between customers you played poker under the desk. Chan threatened to quit after you inexplicably bluffed him out of three rounds in a row. Vernon swore he wasn’t stacking the deck, you were just that good all of a sudden.
“It’s not possible for you to have gotten good at bluffing in under a week, it’s like you’re a totally different person,” Chan said, and he was joking but the sting and the familiarity of the words drained the blood from your face and you barely managed to play it off. The game continued, but without you.
Seokmin was sitting at a table in the coffeeshop flicking idly through a textbook. You ordered a drink and joined him.
“Everything okay?” he asked.
“Fine,” you said.
“Really? Because you only come in here alone when it isn’t.”
You huffed. “It’s nothing. I just needed an escape.” The bookstore felt more welcoming again, more like Wonwoo (Wonwoo with his arm touching yours on the bench, Wonwoo pressed against your side as you play fight over who gets to cook dinner, Wonwoo with his head on your shoulder as he sleeps through the emotional climax of Finding Dory, his breathing a steady breeze against your neck) but something in Chan’s words. . .
You’d recoiled.
“I’m not--” you gripped your cup, thinking carefully about your words. “I’m not a different person, am I?”
“As far as I know you’re the same person you’ve always been.”
You rolled your eyes. “No, I mean-- have I changed, like-- my personality, my little ticks. Any of that?”
Seokmin looked at you (he always looked like he knew more than he said; probably it came from being top of his class all through school but still. . .). “Maybe,” he said. “I’d say you’re the same you, but maybe they knew a different you.”
Your head slipped to meet the table before you could catch it. “Seokmin you know I’m not smart enough for riddles.”
“It doesn’t have to be a riddle.” He laughed. “Everybody has a picture in their mind of everybody else, and it’s never the same as what actually exists.”
“Philosophy is ruining you,” you said. “Stop hanging out with Jeonghan, he’s turning you into a paradox.”
“What I’m saying is, just because someone thinks you’re different than you were, that doesn’t mean you actually are. Maybe you’ve just been different this whole time, and now they finally noticed.”
“Maybe.”
He had a point, once you stripped away the philosophic layers. It was just the phrasing.
It’s like you’re a totally different person. In under a week.
Last week, everything had changed.
You couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong, but you sipped your coffee anyway. Seokmin asked about the company dinner, and you tried to forget about it.
You went shopping with Wonwoo after he closed up the store, trying to find something business casual for the dinner.
“And nothing in the closet would work for this because?” you asked, flicking through the rack of button ups.
“Because it’s a special occasion,” he said, holding a suit jacket against his chest and then hanging it up again. “We can’t wear anything we’ve already worn.”
You snorted. “What are we, movie stars on the red carpet?”
“No,” he said. “I mean, if you wanted, maybe, but no.” He glanced up. “Anytime is an excuse to treat ourselves.”
“Can’t argue with that.” You trailed your arm across a line of ties, letting the material fall over your finger. Your motion halted over a tie. “Oh, this’ll be impressive.” You held it up for him to see.
“Nice,” he said. “The bundles of bills will surely let your boss know you’re in this for what really matters.”
You pointed at him. “Exactly what I was thinking.” You looped it around your head, fingers pinching it together. “Maybe I could wear it like one of those guys in the post apocalyptic movies, that way they know I’m willing to go all the way.”
“Now you’re talking.” He hung up the jackets and came over, taking another tie off the rack, this one a soft coral pink. “Or maybe, you put this one on. . .”
He looped it around your neck and tied it properly.
“Where’d you learn how to tie a tie?” you asked, a laugh bubbling out of you.
“I felt bad making the stylists do it for me all the time,” he said, offhandedly.
The wrongness niggled at you.
You turned to the mirror nearby, playing with the ends of the tie. “I don’t know,” you said.
“What, you don’t like the color?”
“No, pink is a great color.” You surveyed yourself. “I just think I’d want a little more color to my outfit than a tie.”
“Of course,” Wonwoo said, moving to stand behind you, his chest nearly brushing your shoulder as he studied your reflection. “You’re the business one, we want to make sure you pop.” His eyes lit up. “I know.”
He didn’t quite have it the first few times, but finally, after taking over a changing room and trying on enough outfits that the both of you had nearly filled the reject cart, you walked out of the store with your purchases on your arms.
You stopped for takeout on the way back, too tired to cook, and ate dinner in a comfortable silence, leaning against each other and the couch as the TV played the weather forecast. When he dozed off against your neck, you forced yourself up.
“Come on sleepyhead,” you said, pulling him up with you. He made a few affronted noises but didn’t argue as you stole his trash and stowed the leftovers in the fridge and all but carried him into the bedroom.
“Dramatic.” You clicked your tongue, dropping him in the bed and moving to grab your sleepwear and get changed. His hand caught your wrist.
“You don’t have to take the couch tonight,” he said, and his voice was much clearer now.
“Well I’m not about to let you take it,” you said. “It’s my turn.”
“No, I meant--” he cut himself off.
“Oh,” you said.
“If you want,” he said hurriedly. “If it doesn’t make you uncomfortable.”
“Um-- if you’re okay with it,” you said, and your face burns and he looks kind of like he’s in the same boat and he drops your wrist.
“Okay,” he said.
“Okay,” you said, and made for the bathroom.
He was changed when you finished in the bathroom and you climbed into bed beside him. It was strange, sharing, even though you knew you’d done it before maybe. There was an ocean of bed between you that you didn’t dare cross.
You closed your eyes. “Goodnight, Wonwoo,” you said, the words echoing off the wall you faced instead of him. Then, quieter, “You mean the world to me.”
(it’s the best rest you’ve gotten in what feels like forever; you wake up in a tangle of limbs but neither of you are in a hurry to pull away)
You idled outside the building, picking at the sleeves of the shirt you’d picked out the day before.
“Ready?” Wonwoo asked, making eye contact. You nodded, eyes slipping down to rest on the pink tie, the same pink as you’d chosen your shirt to be. He held out his arm, like a gentleman, and you took it.
The room rented for the dinner is as stuffy as you expected. You made small talk with coworkers you’d only ever seen for five minutes at the printer, and played the people watching game with Wonwoo in hushed tones whenever you got a spare moment. Seungcheol swung by a few times to check in and spill a bit of corporate gossip in a hushed voice, both with and without Joshua by his side.
“It’s a game we play,” Seungcheol explained when Wonwoo asked about it. “We make small talk together, he sends me to ‘get drinks’ and then talks me up behind my back.” Seungcheol glanced over at Joshua, where he was chatting calmly with two members of the board of directors. “He’s really good at it.”
Your social battery died about halfway through, but you forced yourself to soldier on. It probably wouldn’t look good if you left early. Hopefully no one would notice as your responses grew shorter and your smiles more strained.
Wonwoo took your hand after you laughed a little too loud at a coworker’s joke, and then turned to you when they had said their goodbyes to do another sweep around the floor. “Are you okay?” he asked softly. “Is it time to go?”
You shook your head. “I shouldn’t leave early.”
“We’ve been here more than half the time, I think we’re allowed.” He folded your hand between his, rubbing it soothingly. “We can use me as an excuse, say I got tired. Please don’t force yourself to stay; I can tell something’s wrong.”
You kind of wanted to cry, and you didn’t know if it was the stress of the evening or what. “I don’t deserve you,” you said.
He wrapped an arm around your shoulders and tugged you in. “You deserve the world,” he said softly into your ear.
And then you left the party.
You stopped at the park, instead of going directly home, sitting at the fountain’s edge.
“You remember when we got takeout?” he asked.
You did. “When we first played the people watching game, right?” you asked, and stopped. That hadn’t been the first time; you’d played it all the time before hadn’t you?
“Yeah,” he said. “You dropped me off.”
“You got really into the game,” you said. “That idol guy’s backstory was impressively complex.”
He laughed, soft and fond, and yet also flat. Like there was a layer of irony you hadn’t caught.
“When you dropped me off at the bookstore, you said that-- you said ‘you mean the world to me’. And-- we’re dating, at least according to Vernon, and, this whole time you never said ‘I love you’.” He looked at you. “Why is that?”
You open your mouth, the answer of a shared back and forth you two had used since university sitting on your tongue, but it didn’t come out. You just closed your mouth.
Because it wasn’t. It wasn’t something you’d said since university. You-- hadn’t known him in university.
“I’m not sure,” you said, bewildered because it was true. Why did you say that?
“It’s just stuck with me,” he said. “Ever since that first day, when I didn’t--” he cut himself off. “It was like I’d been dropped into this world from another one,” he said. “I didn’t know anything, and-- you were a total stranger.”
Another world. Total stranger. The words vibrated against the walls of your skull. You’d thought of him like a stranger too, even though you knew him. At least you thought you did. But you didn’t know him in university, you didn’t know him at all.
“But, as time went by, and I got time to know you, I realized something,” he said, and he took your hand in both of his. “And I don’t think we’re strangers anymore.”
Strangers, you were strangers. What had you thought, that first day? How did you even know it as the first day, beyond Wonwoo’s strange actions? You weren’t thinking of it like the first day of Wonwoo. It was the first day at all. You didn’t know him.
“I guess. . .” he trailed off. “I guess what I want to say, is just that I. . .”
He wasn’t your housemate or your boyfriend or the guy you knew from the frat. He wasn’t-- he was--
Oh god.
You tore your hand from his.
Everything went deathly silent.
“Fancy meeting you here.” Seokmin’s voice rang out.
Your head jerked up.
Time had frozen around you. Wonwoo still sat by the fountain, looking in your direction with an expression of distress, his hand reaching after you. You scrambled back. He didn’t move.
“I guess this means you figured it out?” Seokmin asked.
You looked at him. “What have I done?”
“A wish was made,” he said. “I granted it.”
You blinked. A flash, staring up into the sky from the window; “I wish I could tell him what he means,” you said to the stars, “every night. I wish I could tell him, he means the world to me.”
“You’re Santa.”
Seokmin made a face. “I’m with Wonwoo, let’s not call it that.”
“And Wonwoo knew the whole time that this was wrong?” you asked. He nodded. “Why? Why not me? It was my wish.”
He smiled. “Wishes don’t always work the way you expect them to.”
You shook your head. “Send him back now.”
“Why?”
“It doesn’t matter why Seokmin, just do it!”
He blinked at you. “For the record, I’m not actually Seokmin. I’m just borrowing his appearance, to keep an eye on you.”
You dug your fingers into the dirt, like a reminder it was still there. “And Seungcheol? Vernon? Chan?”
“Projections. Every person you’ve met here is a projection.”
“At least you didn’t abduct them.” You stopped. “At least I didn’t.” You shook your head. “But it’s done now. You have to send him back. He didn’t ask to be here, he didn’t want to be here!”
“And if he doesn’t want to go back?”
“Of course he wants to go back!” you shout. “Have you not seen the way he cares for the members? You said you were keeping an eye on us, did you miss that day at the park? He misses them! And I dragged him away!” You shoot to your feet, throat beginning to close up. “You have to fix this-- I have to fix this!”
The thing which was not Seokmin looked at you. “Don’t you wonder what he was going to say to you, before everything clicked?”
You swallowed. “Whatever it was, it was built on a lie. And it’s a lie I refuse to keep living.”
Not-Seokmin shrugged. “Then turn and look him in the eyes and wish everything back,” he said.
You did.
(if you cried when you woke up in a single bed you recognized as truly your own, you were the only one to know)
Wonwoo was oddly quiet in broadcasts from that point on. You couldn’t bring yourself to talk about him anymore. Someone asked you on Twitter if you had something against him.
No, you’d responded, he just reminds me of a recent ex. Every time I see him I think about them and it’s just too painful right now. I don’t hate Wonwoo.
Two days later, the Seventeen Twitter account dmed you.
I need to talk to you.
You sent, I’m sorry.
You deactivated.
You almost gave away your concert tickets, but you’d been planning on going with a friend before everything and you wouldn’t let them down. You went despite all your misgivings. With the stage lights on full blast, there was no way he’d be able to see you in the audience. You were safe, with your seats halfway up the concert hall, half a mile from the stage.
And then Seventeen, in the middle of their set, hopped off the stage, into the audience.
You’d wondered why certain aisles had a security detail around them.
If it wasn’t the middle of a song, you’d ask the people farther down the row to switch with you but you didn’t dare move around; it had been drilled into you that doing so during a performance was disrespectful. You were the seat on the aisle, and Wonwoo was on his way up, his eyes scanning the crowd with a sharp determination even as he continued his verse flawlessly.
Would looking away be more conspicuous than staring?
Should you jump to blend with the energy of the crowd, or freeze so he didn’t look?
It didn’t matter.
He’d seen you.
He took the stairs two, three at a time, stopping on the landing beside you, turning to face the rest of the hall again as his verse finished, and then he glanced at you.
The spotlight shone on his face.
“Please don’t leave,” he mouthed, or maybe said, but the combined roar of the crowd and the blood rushing in your ears drowned it out completely.
And then he turned to complete the performance, leaving a few fans looking at you wistfully.
(several of them came up after the concert to congratulate you, to gush about how lucky you were, to speculate about what happened and laugh about it; blessedly no one was openly rude about it)
You sat on the edge of a fountain, in the plaza a block from the back door of the concert hall, fidgeting with your sleeves. You didn’t know if you were crazy. You probably were crazy, waiting for him. He’d be livid. He had to be livid. He’d never forgive you.
But whatever closure would mean for him, you’d give it to him.
Anything.
The back door of the concert hall slammed open and a figure came bolting out towards you. They skidded to a halt at the edge of the fountain, and you could see Wonwoo’s eyes over the mask.
“I wasn’t sure you were going to stay,” he said.
“I wasn’t either.”
“I’m glad you did.” He sat down on the edge of the fountain. “I really need to talk to you.”
“I’m sorry,” you blurted, before he could get upset.
He blinked. “For what?”
“For making the stupid wish and dragging you into an alternate universe, and then not even remembering doing it.” You rubbed your arm, staring at the brickwork. “I mean I was basically gaslighting you the entire time.”
“I know you didn’t mean it,” he said.
You toed the crack between two stones. “What all do you know?”
“How that world worked. How I got there. How I got back.” You saw him move, reaching out like he was going to take your hand, and then stopping himself in the middle. “I’m not upset with you.”
“You should be.” The words dropped out of your mouth. “You should hate me. You-- I basically ruined your life.”
“You didn’t ruin my life, you showed me what I was missing,” he said. “You remember when we played that people watching game? What I said about that man?”
You picked at a loose thread in your sleeve. “He. . . he was taking a break from the practice room.”
You saw him nod from the corner of your eye. “And I said he was getting a new perspective.”
“He’s seeing life from a new angle,” you said.
“It was as much my wish as it was yours,” Wonwoo said. “I felt lost. I didn’t know where to go next or what to focus on, and it wasn’t something the members could help with, but it was something you could help with. And you did.”
You felt numb. A wish was made. Not-Seokmin had given one last riddle, one you were finally understanding.
“You add a dimension to my life that I was missing,” he said. “Just, please-- please don’t leave me again.”
You looked at him, finally, sitting there on the edge of the fountain, his hair a mess from the performance.
“I didn’t want to leave,” you said. “I just-- I had to let you go.”
“You don’t have to here,” he said. “I know I don’t run a bookstore, and we didn’t meet in college, but--”
“I didn’t fall for you because you ran a bookstore,” you said. “The bookstore was window dressing. You’re you no matter what career you have.”
On impulse, you reached out. He met you in the middle and you laced your fingers through his.
“I love you,” you said.
He clasped his other hand around yours and lifted it to his lips, his eyes squeezed up in such overwhelming happiness you thought you’d cry.
“I love you too.”

Three Times He ignored you. One time he wished he hadn’t.
Word count: 1,153
Warnings: angst. Swearing.
Katsuki Bakugo x fem!reader.
..........
The first time Bakugo ignored you, it was at the start of the first semester in U.A, first year. It wasn’t anything significant, I mean, he already made his magnificent and worthy first impression, why should he work on it now ?
“Can I have a sharpener? “
Bakugo looked to his right, and found you staring expectantly at him. There was no malice or mockery in your tone, just a relaxed posture, your (e/c) eyes staring into his own patiently.
Bakugo was surprised that you weren’t scared of him, at this point, all his classmates avoided him like the plague, scared of the hotheaded ace in class.
He certainly wasn’t vocal about his thoughts though.
Well, on the other hand you decided to give him a chance, he seemed somewhat vile, but everyone gets lonely right ? It seemed kinda naive of you though. Plus, you really needed that sharpener and it seemed everyone around you was just as ill prepared.
He didn’t know what to make of this, so he did the next best logical thing to shouting.
He promptly turned away, missing your offended face.
“Jeez, just say no. You probably don’t have a sharpener, but you certainly have a stick up your ass.”
And the rest of this one was history.
.............
Fast few a couple of months later. Bakugo and you had developed a somewhat of a friendly rivalry, the competition somewhat tamed by the fact that you hung out with his usual group of idiots. The ones that refused to leave him alone.
You guys were sitting in the cafeteria, when you stood up.
“I’m gonna get drinks from the vending machine, do you guys want anything ?” You asked politely, hearing a chorus of enthusiastic replies from your friends. All except one.
“What about you ?” You asked, directing your piercing gaze to him. You always tried to be friendly with him regardless of what goes on in the battle ring. It threw him off.
Unable to formulate a reply to your sudden act of kindness, Bakugo just awkwardly stared ahead, wordlessly dismissing your question.
“Guess not.” You shrugged, willing your self not to take it to heart, but it was hard.
........
The third time, you guys were second years, fresh back to school. At this point, Bakugo was head over heels, but his overzealous and painfully ambitious nature kept him from confessing. He was, as painful to admit as it is, confused as to what to do with his feelings.
“Katsuki, do you want to hang out with us ?” You asked tentatively, sitting in front of his desk, with your face resting on your hand, eyes staring at his expectantly.
“Tch, no.”
“Aww, come on, we miss you.”
If it was someone else, he would have exploded their face and beat the rejection into their head. If it was someone else, his heart wouldn’t skip a beat at the fact that they miss him. But no, it was you. And he hated it.
Instead of taking the aggressive approach like he usually ached to do. He pulled his earphones out, and plugged them into his ears. He didn’t hear your disappointment sigh as you decided to leave him be.
........
The last time Bakugo ignored you, was a month after he rejected the hang out invitation. He, like every cliche coward, settled to ignoring you. He hated how strong you are, how beautiful, enchanting, charismatic, funny, he hated it all, because he loved it so much. And he shouldn’t do love, it isn’t supposed to be like that. Even Izuku understood that to be number one, you need to have your priorities straight, making him reject Uraraka.
Round face’s tear stained face was imprinted on his mind, because he wondered, would you end up like that too if he led you on ? He didn’t want to hurt you, but God, he didn’t even know what to do. He loved you, but is love enough to sacrifice his dream for ?
He was training, pushing his muscles to the brink, ignoring the straining and aching of his heart and body.
A ring rung out, the sound vibrating throughout the gym, breaking his concentration. He got up and checked the called ID, his heart skipping a beat in nervousness and something else when he saw your familiar name.
He muted the ringing, willing his heart to not overthink this, to be logical, but is love ever logical ?
He resisted the twitch of his fingers, the pain in his chest, and got back to his pushups.
When he got back to the dorm, he was surprised to see his whole class huddled together. Mina’s red eyes looked up at him, until her grief resurfaced all over again, and the dam in her eyes broke.
She sobbed, her shoulders shaking as pain wrecked through her body.
His classmates avoided eye contact with him, staring at the floor as each of them nursed their own grief.
The tension in the air was thick, nobody spoke, but sobs filled the air, and a heavy cloud came over Katsuki. His heart was weighed by the possibilities, and confusion was evident. why was no one saying anything ?
Kirishima looked at him, his usual cheerful smile absent, replaced by a deep frown that hid his sharp ,shark like teeth. His eyes didn’t hold the usual easy going vibe, no, they were red rimmed. They looked solemn, like a messenger delivering heartbreaking news.
“Bakugo...” he begun, but trailed off. Mina picked up the slack.
“(Y/n), she... -“ pausing as a fresh sob threatened to break her temporary composure, Mina said her next words quickly, wanting to rip of the bandaid. It sure hurt Bakugo way more then a measly wound that required a mere bandaid. No, this scars the heart, and you will feel that scar with every pump. “- she was killed in a car accident, a villain who controls electronics made a car crash into her. She died in the ambulance. She’s dead, God, (y/n)’s dead Bakugo. She’s gone, how could that happen ?”
The car wasn’t the only thing that crashed. And the wounds on Bakugo’s heart weren’t superficial. With every word, a new, more vicious slash was made on his heart. His defaults scowl fell, the tremble of his lip and widening of his eyes telling what his mouth wouldn’t utter.
His last chance to hear your voice, and it was gone from him forever. If only he knew, he would have clutched into the opportunity to hear your voice one last time like his life depended on it. He would have taken every opportunity to hang out with you, to see your goofy smile.
This would be the last time he ever ignores you, and Bakugo will spend the rest of his life wondering if placing ambitions on a higher pedestal then the one who stole his heart was worth it.

Warnings: angst, sad, mentions of car accidents & hospitals
Tumblr media
Every Friday you and Jamie had a date night, it was the one night a week the two of you could wind down with each other and you never missed it unless Jamie was on a roadie. This Friday you guys went to your favorite restaurant and saw a movie after, the movie was some stupid romantic comedy and in all it’s cheesy glory it had the two of you laughing all the way to the car after the movie. It was a fairly hot night in Dallas, both you and Jamie wearing shorts and light t-shirts, walking back to the car hand in hand at around 11 PM.
“AC, I need the AC.” you groaned, buckling your seatbelt, not even in the car for a whole minute before complaining about the horrible heat.
“Don’t pressure her, it takes a few minutes.” Jamie spoke, softly patting the steering wheel as if to give the car some comfort after your harsh tone towards “her.” You laughed, putting up your hands in surrender as Jamie buckled his seatbelt and began pulling out of the parking lot and onto the main road. It was fairly quiet tonight in Dallas not many cars on the road, so you and Jamie decided to have some fun and sing along to the radio at full blast not having a care in the world. Pulling up to a stop sign, you looked around before turning the music down and undoing your seatbelt, smirking at your husband in the driver's seat.
“You know, i’ve always wanted to get knocked up in a car.” you whispered as seductively as possible, Jamie smiling at you, his eyes going wide once he realized, and you took no time to lean over the center console and press your lips against his. Tonight was supposed to be like every other Friday night, dinner, movie, sex, it sounded simple, but it was truthfully all you wanted and everything you looked forward to during the week. Tonight ended differently than your other Friday night dates, only a few seconds into kissing and there wasn’t anything to stop what happened next. You never predicted for your once blissfully in love moment to be completely ruined within a matter of seconds. You couldn’t have predicted the drunk driver speeding up behind you and shoving your car full force through the intersection. Yet it happened. With your seatbelt undone the collision caused you to go right through the front windshield, your head suffering most of the damages as you landed on the hood unconscious.
Everyone’s life was based on moments and how one decision you make could impact you for the rest of your life, no matter how big or small. Jamie felt that meeting you was one of life’s greatest joys, he knew the second he saw you that you were meant to be, that you were his one true love. Jamie used the one opportunity he was given to talk to you and he knew it would change his life forever.
Jamie couldn’t stop staring at the back of your head from a few feet away from you in line at his favorite coffee shop. You paid the barista and said “thank you” before turning around with your drink and walking passed Jamie, stopping at the door briefly to turn and look back at him realizing that he was already looking at you with a small smirk. You gave him a smile and continued out the door and made it the short distance to where your car was parked.
“Ugh!” you groaned, turning around almost bumping into Jamie who came walking up behind you with a small bag in his hand.
“You forgot your bagel.” Jamie smiled, handing you the bag feeling giddy inside that he was given the opportunity to talk to you.
“Thank you, you’d think I would remember my breakfast after spending 20 minutes waiting for it.” you laughed, looking up at his broad figure just now noticing how tall he really is.
“Yea, it’s what i’m here for.” Jamie said, mentally face palming at the corny line he just gave you.
“Um, i’m Y/N.” you reached your hand out to him, and noticed a small blush on his face.
“Jamie.” he shook your hand, both of you laughing awkwardly and pulling away from each other.
“Well, thank you for this.” you said, opening your car door handle.
“You know, um, I noticed that we have the same coffee order.” Jamie mumbled, and you turned back to look at him, a smirk showing on your face.
“Is that so?”
“Yup.” Jamie nodded his head, as if to confirm it and you could already feel the butterflies bubbling in your stomach.
“How intimate.” you giggled, keeping your eyes on his and noticing how the squint when he smiles.
“I was thinking, we should drink our coffees together. You know, to create a bond over our joint tastes...in coffee.” Jamie said, looking down at you and giving his award winning smile. You agreed closing your car door, the two of you walking back into Weekend Coffee together. You grabbed a table while Jamie ordered his coffee and pastry, coming back to the table and telling you he swears by their pastries. It took Jamie all of about 5 minutes to fall in love with you and you with him. The next few months were spent getting to know each other and falling for each other's quirks and habits.
Jamie woke up in the hospital with virtually no injuries having to listen to the doctor explain to him that his wife was in a medically induced coma. He sat by your side as often as he could and made sure to place your wedding band on your finger where it belongs. Jamie replayed the significant moments in your relationship in his head while he sat by you.
“Babe, you can’t keep doing that.” Jamie walked outside to where you were crouched over a grey cat giving him some food to eat.
“I know, but I love him.” you frowned, going back inside his apartment.
“I can’t keep him though, I'm allergic.” Jamie mentioned, and you knew that already, but the poor cat having to stay outside in the heat made your heart ache.
“Do you want some fruit? I bought it this morning.” you pulled the bowl of fresh fruit out of Jamie’s refrigerator and looked at him while he just smiled at you. Jamie, in those moments, confirmed the thoughts he’d been having for a while now. “What?”
“I want you to move in.” Jamie continued looking at you as he flipped the pancakes he was making for breakfast and you gasped.
“Yes!” you put the fruit down on the counter, coming up behind Jamie and pulling him away from the stove to give him a kiss.
Jamie smiled at the memory, and looked over at you with a tear in his eye. You had a tube down your throat connected to a ventilator to help you breathe and he couldn’t get over the sight. He blinked back the tears and put his head in his hands thinking about your wedding.
“I vow to always love you, and always try the new pastry flavors at the cafe, no matter how weird they may be.” you said looking up into Jamie’s eyes, making him and both your friends laugh at your vow to him.
“You wrote your vows on a Weekend Coffee menu?” Jamie asked, noticing the paper in your hand and you smiled shyly holding it up over your face. Jamie held the same menu up with his vows on it and you both laughed in shock. “Okay, I vow to love every bit of you, now and forever. I promise that no matter what gets in our way, we will always find our way back to each other.” Jamie said, promising his love to you in every way as long as you were both alive.
“Do you take each other as man and wife?”
“I do.” Jamie said proudly, a wide smile covering his face.
“I do.” you smiled just as big, letting a happy laugh leave your throat as you said it. The wedding was small, just having Jamie’s bestest friends there who grew to be your friends as well over the years and you wouldn’t have had it any other way.
A few days later you started breathing on your own so the doctors removed you from the ventilator and told Jamie you should be waking up soon and you did. The nurse told Jamie to give you some space when you woke up, knowing that you wouldn’t be fully coherent and probably scared.
“Hey.” Jamie whispered from the end of your hospital bed, seeing the eyes he fell in love with finally flutter open. You looked around the room feeling confused and avoiding eye contact with Jamie. “It’s so good to see you.”
“Y/N, it’s okay. You’re in the hospital, you were in a car accident, you suffered from some head injuries, but you’re okay.” the nurse explained in a soothing tone.
“Was anyone else hurt, doctor?” you asked softy, looking directly at Jamie and feeling uncomfortable under his confused gaze.
“What?” Jamie whispered, feeling his voice about to give out. “Y/N, you know who I am right?”
“You’re my doctor.” you stated, and watched as the man in front of you looked at the nurse and back at you before coming to sit in the chair beside you.
“Um, i’m your husband.” Jamie said, reaching for your hand and feeling his heart break when you pulled away from him holding a scared expression on your face. You glanced down at your left hand gasping when you noticed the wedding ring. Jamie walked out of your hospital room with the nurse feeling frustrated as she explained how brain injuries were hard to diagnose because of how unpredictable the brain is.
“She doesn’t remember me!” Jamie said frustratedly, pulling at the ends of his hair.
“The swelling in the brain can cause confusion and memory loss sometimes, but it’s normal.” the nurse explained, watching Jamie walk down the hallway of the hospital with tears in his eyes.
Jamie went home to pack a bag for you and came back to the hospital later that night. He fell asleep laying on a few of the chairs in the waiting room and was woken up by you tapping his shoulder lightly.
“Hi.” Jamie said sitting up, his voice gravely from the short slumber he was in.
“What are you doing?” you asked, wrapping your hospital robe tighter around your body.
“Sleeping.” Jamie yawned, and you smiled awkwardly before nodding your head. Jamie grabbed the bag he packed for you and moved it closer to you. “I brought you some clothes.”
“Thanks.” you spoke, sitting on one of the chairs next to him. “I’m hungry.”
“Okay.” Jamie laughed, grabbing your bag and walking with you to the hospital cafeteria. Jamie explained to you that you were a painter and had your own studio and you were shocked to find out you didn’t follow through with going to med school.
“I remember being in med school and...being engaged to Samuel.” you said, noticing how Jamie put his head down a little. “I just, I don’t know.” you got up from your seat in the cafeteria heading up the stairs hearing Jamie run after you.
“Babe, babe, just wait!” Jamie called after you and you tensed hearing the pet name he used, but stopped on the stairs turning to look at him.
“The best thing you can do is to go back to your life, with me. You heard what the doctor said.” Jamie said, putting emphasis on the word “best.”
“But I don’t know you. So what? I’m just supposed to go back to a stranger's place.”
“It’s our place.”
“There’s no proof of our love? A journal?” you asked, feeling helpless. Of course, you wanted to believe Jamie was your husband for the right reasons and that you were in love with him, but it was so hard for you.
The next day you got ready to leave with your parents not feeling like going home with Jamie was even an option at this point.
“Wait hold on, I have a letter you sent when I was away.” Jamie ran into your room, holding up his phone. “You said you wanted proof.”
Hey baby,
I’m at the studio right now and I miss you so bad these paintings are starting to look like you. I’m sending you a letter because I thought it would be a fun surprise for you on your roadie. I hope it actually makes it to you. Anyways, I love you and I can’t wait to see you when you come home next week.
Love you always,
Y/N
“Just think about it, you quit med school, you pursued being an artist, you moved to Dallas. These are all things you did way before meeting me, you know it to yourself to at least experience the life you set up for yourself.” Jamie said, grabbing onto your hands and pouring his heart into those few sentences. “Come home with me.”
“I guess I could try it out, to see if it will help my memory. If it doesn’t work out, i’ll come home.” you turned to look at your parents as you spoke and your parents understood. They loved Jamie and just wanted the best for you. You drove home with Jamie taking everything from Dallas in on your ride from the hospital. You spent the night looking around your shared apartment at the pictures and smelling the perfumes you had on your vanity. Nothing felt familiar when you went to sleep alone, Jamie sleeping on the living room couch.
When you woke up you took a shower and came out disturbed to find out you had a tattoo of a bird on your shoulder, and changed into an oversized sweatshirt before going into the kitchen area where Jamie was.
“You look nice.” Jamie said, smirking slightly, taking in your interesting clothing choices.
“Really? This is the only thing of mine I feel comfortable in.” you said, hugging the material around your body awkwardly.
“That’s mine actually.” Jamie laughed, pointing to the Stars logo on the front and you laughed while apologizing and he assured you it was okay that you wear it. Jamie went to practice and you managed to find the video of your wedding chuckling at your corny vows and tears up at Jamie’s. You noticed the name of the cafe on the menus and decided to go there for the afternoon.
The next few weeks went by as seamlessly as they could when you’re suffering from amnesia. You and Jamie made small talk in the mornings and at night before retreating to your own beds. Nothing felt normal for you, but you were trying everyday to discover new things around the apartment that might jog your memory while Jamie was at practice. Today you were feeling curious about your old life and Samuel and how things ended between the two of you when you remember being so blissfully in love with him. You called your mom and asked where he worked so you could visit him and although she was hesitant on telling you she eventually gave you the information. You took a short bus ride to locate his office building that he worked at and asked the receptionist to show you where his office is.
“Hi.” you said walking into his office, smiling widely when he turned to look at you and you realized he hadn’t changed a bit.
“Y/N.” Samuel said, shocked to see you standing in his office after no many years apart. You explained to him what happened with the car accident and how the last thing you remember is being with him.
“Can you please explain what happened with us?” you asked, shifting in your seat across from him in his office.
“Only you would dump a guy and then come back and ask for answers.” Samuel said, fidgeting with the pen on his desk. “A cruel, pre wedding dumping.”
“Why?” you asked, genuinely confused not fathoming why you would call off your wedding to the guy sitting in front of you.
“You just changed. You weren’t sure about med school anymore, and you really weren’t sure about me.” Samuel explained. “It’s okay though, i’ve been with Rose for about a year now.”
“Right.” you shook your head slightly disappointed that the guy you last remember loving had moved on from you.
“I couldn’t wait forever, Y/N.” you nodded your head agreeing with him and stood up to leave.
“I’ll let you get back to work.” you said, both of you going in for a hug, something you hadn’t felt in ages. Feeling Samuel’s arms wrap around your waist made you pull back to look at him before leaning in to kiss him with your hands cupping his cheeks. “I’m sorry.” you said, pulling away and walking out the door.
The next day you woke up ready to explore a different part of your new life that you hadn’t yet understood. The artist side. The last time you wanted to be an artist you were in high school so owning your own studio and actually selling paintings to people was one of the biggest things you had to wrap your mind around.
“I’m ready to see the studio.” you said at breakfast with Jamie, hoping he would take you there and show you around.
“Yea? Alright! We’ll go after this.” Jamie said excitedly, ready to show you a huge part of who you were. It was a short walk from your apartment so after breakfast the two of you went there and Jamie unlocked the doors for you.
“This is it.” he said, opening the door and letting you inside first to take everything in. “It’s cool right?”
“Wow.” you said slowly walking around the room, looking at all of your art supplies and paintings all over the room.
“You used to come in here and blast the music and get so lost in your art.” Jamie explained, watching you look around at everything, stopping to touch a few of the pieces you had on the walls. Jamie handed you a paintbrush when you stopped in front of your latest unfinished piece and you hesitated before taking it. “Go ahead.”
“I don’t really know what i’m doing.” you felt panicked and insecure in those moments, with Jamie watching over you knowing he wanted nothing more than to know you still remember how to make art.
“Hold on.” Jamie said, running over to the stereo you had in the corner of the room and turning it up loudly before walking back to you with a big smile on his face. “Just try it.”
“Can you just turn the music down please?” you asked, voice shaky feeling anxiety erupt in your stomach and spread all over your body.
“I swear you used to listen to it way louder than this-”
“I have a clinically bad fucking headache! Please turn it down!” you threw the paintbrush, yelling over the music at Jamie and rubbing your temples. Jamie turned off the music, feeling anger bubbling up inside of him. He didn’t want to blow up on you, but he wanted you to realize it was hard for him too.
“I’m trying to help you! We don’t speak to each other like this, Y/N. This is difficult for me too.” Jamie explained, before turning around and walking out of your studio. After he left you spent some more time looking around before going back to your apartment. Jamie went for a walk and stopped at your favorite takeout place before returning home to you.
“Y/N?” Jamie called out, not seeing you in the living room.
“I’m in here.” you responded, and Jamie walked into your bedroom seeing you packing a bag. “My sister is getting married soon and I just feel like I should be there for her. She has an engagement party coming up so I want to help her with that.”
“Okay, but what about your life here?” Jamie asked, watching you walk around your room grabbing more things to pack away.
“I don’t know, I just- I can’t do it.” you said. “I’m sorry, it’s just going to be until after the wedding.”
You invited Jamie to your sister’s engagement party, per your family's request, and against your sisters. Your sister never minded Jamie, but she always preferred you with Samuel, since she was the reason you guys had met in the first place. Your parents insisted on Jamie being a part of this event, not as your date, but just so he could feel welcome in this aspect of your life since it was new for all of you.
“Y/N!” Jamie said, spotting you once he entered the backyard to where the party was happening.
“Jamie! You made it!” you said, walking over to him and noticing his suit. “You look nice.”
“I was thinking that we should try a new method. We should start from the beginning, and I would like to take you on a date.”
“A date?” you asked, feeling uneasy at his question when you looked behind him briefly noticing Samuel. “I don’t know, the weddings coming up-”
“But if we go before that, you could still take me as your date.” Jamie said, smirking. Suddenly feeling smooth and confident with his choice of words.
“Okay. A date.” you nodded your head in agreement, smiling widely up at Jamie before both of your attentions got turned to some toasts being made.
A few days later and Jamie was getting ready for his date with you. He picked you up at your sister’s house, just outside of Dallas.
“Where are we going?” you asked curiously, noticing that Jamie was driving back into the city.
“It’s a surprise.” Jamie said, and not long after you made it to your first destination which was parked on the side of the road, you knew it looked familiar from the day you explored on your own, but you couldn’t pinpoint it. “This is the exact spot where we first met. I’m gonna take you down memory lane.”
You guys got out of the car and headed into Weekend Coffee where Jamie brought you to the table you first sat at together and left to go up and get you the same order you both had that day.
“This is my favorite pastry of all time and the day we met I forced you to try it.” Jamie said, sliding the pastry over to you for you to try. You took a small bite and moaned in satisfaction making both of you laugh at your reaction.
“It’s amazing!” you took another bite, and listened as Jamie explained to you how you always order that pastry and whatever new flavor they have that time and split them. The next stop on Jamie’s list was the rink where the Stars practice and also where he taught you how to skate very quickly into your relationship.
“What do you think?” Jamie asked, handing you a sweatshirt to wear while you're inside the rink.
“Um, I can’t skate. I’ll eat ice.” you said, shaking your head and Jamie laughed throwing his head back.
“I got you, don’t worry.” Jamie said, finishing the laces on his skates before kneeling down to help you tie yours the proper way for them to be secure on your feet. Jamie stood up on his skates and walked towards the opening of the rink before turning to look at you. You nodded slowly wobbling behind him, and watching as he expertly took his place on the ice.
“Hold my hand.” you shrieked, holding both your hands out for him to take. Jamie grabbed a hold of your hands and led you onto the ice, but he quickly moved his hands to your waist to help stabilize you.
After a little while of him holding you tightly, you hadn’t realized when he started pulling away from you and you were skating on your own. You gasped realizing he was watching you from about a foot away and that caused you to lose your balance. You felt your skates come up from under you and you closed your eyes bracing yourself for the fall, but it never came jamie saving the fall, holding you in his arms.
“Oh my god! I thought I was gonna die!” you yelped, and looked up at Jamie seeing him smiling down at you.
“I think you learned even quicker this time around.” Jamie smirked, standing you up straight  on your skates. The two of you wrapped up the lesson and made your way back out to his car.
“Kiss me.” you said to Jamie once both of you were in the car. Jamie looked at you with wide eyes and you were already smiling confidently at him.
“Are you sure?” Jamie asked, already starting to lean into you and you nodded your head yes before pulling him in by the back of the neck. Jamie put everything he had in that kiss and you could feel all his emotions pouring into it.
“This is nice.” you said, pulling away with a smile on your lips. Jamie nodded, leaning in to kiss you again, finally letting himself feel safe in your embrace because for the first time in months he felt close to you again. You pulled apart both of you breathing heavy and your faces flushed and Jamie drove you back to your sisters house and of course, walked you to the door like a gentleman.
“I miss you. I miss us. I love you.” Jamie said, and you gave him a sad smile before looking around to avoid meeting his gaze.
“I should get inside. Goodnight Jamie.” you walked into the house, giving him a small smile before closing the door. When you walked inside your sister was sitting on the couch watching tv and waiting for you.
“Hey! Were you out with Samuel?” your sister asked excited.
“No, I was with Jamie. I like him.” you smiled, trying to fight off the tears beginning to pool in your eyes, but that didn’t help and they came rushing down your face.
A few days later and it was your sister's wedding, you didn’t bring Jamie as your date knowing that it wouldn’t be fair to him to give him that kind of hope. Jamie kept his distance with you, not wanting to overwhelm you with his presence at the reception.
“Hey, you want me to introduce you to people. Can’t feel good to be the one left out.” Samuel said, coming over to where Jamie was standing at the bar.
“I’m not the one left out.” Jamie said confidently.
“If you say so. You just seem weird over here all by yourself.” Samuel laughed, getting his drink from the bartender.
“I’m just waiting for Y/N.” Jamie said, slight irritation in his tone of voice
“Good luck with that.” Samuel said, starting to walk away from the bar.
“You’re enjoying this aren’t you?” Jamie asked, before Samuel could get too far away. “Y/N leaves you, has a whole life without you with some new guy that's different and now you get to watch her reject all of that.”
“I like it a little bit, I guess.” Samuel smirked, a condescending chuckle falling from his lips.
“You wanna know what I like? I like that Y/N told me everything about you, that when she was with you she’d wake up at night panicking thinking, ‘is this all there is?’” Jamie said, taking a sip from his drink.
“She told you everything?” Samuel asked, a smile on his face. “Did she tell you that she kissed me a few weeks ago?”
“Look, you obviously love her and think that you're gonna get her back, but she outgrew you. It’ll probably happen again, man.” Jamie said, shrugging his shoulders.
“Well, i’ll be sure to think about that when i’m in bed with your wife.” Samuel said, and that was the final straw for Jamie as he threw a punch to his face knocking Samuel to the ground.
“Jamie!” you yelled, running over and seeing Samuel on the ground. Jamie turned to look at you and ran after you.
“What was that?” you felt Jamie coming up behind you so you stopped short turning around once you were out of earshot from everyone.
“I’ve been driving myself crazy trying everything possible to save us and you’ve been kissing Samuel?” Jamie said, frustration hitting him like a brick.
“That’s not fair!” you said, looking up at Jamie.
“No? I see the way you look at him, it’s the same way you used to look at me.” Jamie whispered, looking at the ground and back up at you. “Your memory’s not coming back. I’m a stranger.”
“I’m so sorry, I don’t mean to hurt you Jamie. I’m so tired of disappointing you.” you let the tears fall down your face freely.
“I know. How do you look at the girl you love and tell yourself it’s time to leave?”Jamie asked, before turning and walking away from you.
9 Months Later
You were finally getting around to unpack your things from Jamie’s apartment. You hadn’t realized the last box was holding something very near and dear to your heart. It was your wedding vows, the ones written on Weekend Coffee menus.
“I vow to help you love life, to always hold you with tenderness, and to have the patients that love demands.” you read the menu outloud, feeling a pang in your chest and your breath hitch in your throat. You decided to take a ride to the small cafe where everything started, upon arriving you saw Jamie outside the doors reading the “closed” sign on the glass. Jamie turned, walking away from the door and doing a double take as he saw you approaching and stopped in his tracks.
“Hi.” Jamie said, walking closer to meet you halfway on the sidewalk.
“Hi.” you responded, both of you stopping in front of each other.
“I hope you didn’t come all the way to the city for a pastry.” Jamie said, turning to look back at the sign.
“Actually, I moved back here six months ago.” you said, smiling up at Jamie.
“Really? That’s great.”
“I’ve actually started to paint again.”
“That’s amazing!”
“It’s crazy what my hands remember, that my mind forgot you know?” you said, gesturing to your head as you spoke. “So, thank you.”
“Wasn’t me.” Jamie said, shaking his head noticing the tears pooling in your eyes.
“Yes it was. You did everything. You never wanted anything but the best for me.” you said, reassuring Jamie, wiping the tears that started to fall down your face.
“I just wanted you to be happy.” Jamie confirmed.
“Isn’t there somewhere we used to go when this place closed?” you asked, smirking at Jamie hoping he’s getting the hint that you want to go out with him.
“Yea, let’s go.” Jamie said, both of you walking the same direction. Jamie smiling down at you when you reached for his hand.
You never regained your memory, but the love between you and Jamie was true, it was real and raw and able to be felt no matter what forces were between you. It was a love that anyone could feel being in the same room as you, it was kind, patient, and honest.

I’m not telling, that I’m hurting
matsukawa x f!reader
genre: a slight bit of angst, and then a slight bit of fluff
warnings: hm, maybe the slightly suggestive last sentence <3
word count: 5.8k
note: pls accept my ugly baby, my brain fried itself writing it  (09.12. finally beta’ed my ugly baby hehe)
Tumblr media
remember how I said Kuroo is a chill boyfriend and is quick to show that he dislikes something, openly seething and brooding?
Mattsun is even more laid-back in general, there's probably a picture of him next to the word in the dictionary
BUT he also hides it super well when he doesn’t particularly like something
Like, you're probably not realizing that he’s upset or angry until he decides to be very, very obvious about it
and even if he can't hide it (bc it's not only one thing bothering him but more, extremely rare) he won't talk about it on his own
Which is not only exhausting for you but also straining on your relationship at those times
There are two different kinds of pissed though
It isn’t something he wears openly but he gets jealous pretty fast
you’re beautiful, smart, funny and friendly
you’re everything he wants in his significant other and he’d do anything for you, but he hates how there are truly people out there thinking they could be better for you and ask you out
ofc they want a piece of your attention, he understands, it doesn't mean he that he can't hate it
Bc..maybe (and he would never admit it) he was a bit more insecure than he let on, hiding it under a perfectly trained appearance, all lazy smile, and sarcastic comments
this is his usual state of being pissed, and it’s exclusively reserved for and directed at others
After you officially became an item, it got better - it’s not hard to see that you two were a package deal match made in heaven
back to the day, you started dating:
you two weren’t yet a couple yet but you both were pretty obvious w your wants
There was that unspoken push and pull battle between you regarding who would give in first and ask the other out officially
That moment, you were standing next to Matsukawa holding his hand  which is amazing come on, his large hands engulfing yours is a blessing
(‘’Mattsunnn, my fingers are so cold, will you warm them up?’’ – ‘’That’s a lame attempt of an excuse, Y/N,’’ he had said while taking your hand anyway ‘’you could have that every day, you know, all you have to do is ask me first’’ – ‘’In your dreams, Issei ~’’ )
it didn’t stop that one guy from his class, so arrogant and sure of himself, from coming up to you, completely ignoring Matsukawa, and asking you out??
Mattsun did not like that AT ALL
If glares could kill, you’d have to visit your boyfriend in jail every week <3
you just gaped at the other, it was hard to believe that this guy was serious but…he waited for an answer
moments of staring were followed with you both simultaneously - he, hiding his annoyance with sarcasm, you mildly concerned for the others health - letting out a ''What the hell''
Before you could tell the other guy that you're not the slightest interested, Mattsun answered for you
''It's sooo cute of you to ask me, but I think it would be unfair of me to agree and just leave Y/N hanging like that…additionally, I only have one hand holding hand available and…'' he sighed deeply, lifting your still firmly intertwined fingers, his brown eyes boring into the other guys ''I have to hold her hand for her for…probably forever, so you're…a bit late.''
Letting him pull you away, you giggle ''You know you kind of declared us as offical, a couple, for everyone to hear.'' - ''I absolutely did not do such thing, I'm now simply eternally attached to you and your hand, that's a difference.''
You won that round nonetheless bc him telling the other off was THE gossip for the next week
Your best friend gave you the glorious idea to attend his game at the end of the week in his volleyball shirt but tease him a bit until then about wearing his friend's one
''You know I should totally ask Tooru if he would lend me his jersey, just to make that jealous bitch in my class shut up and stop pestering me simply for actually knowing him.'', ''Have you seen Iwaizumi's biceps? Please tell me that you wouldn't totally support our strong ace…and maybe open a cult just for his arms. Let me drop all of my life duties real quick, I'm meant to be a good housewife.''; ''Taka-chan said he'd pay for my lunch the whole week if I'd come to your game showcasing his number, you wouldn't mind right?''
The thing that had happened and you riling him up all week ended with the other kind of anger which is the silent treatment, completed with a very cold shoulder (which is also, in all honest, his specialty)
him punishing you with silence the whole Thursday as well as Friday morning
He avoids being alone with you, answers messages as short as possible, spends his lunch starring at his food, and not making eye contact
(he's still watching you, just bc he is currently annoyed with you after deviling him so much, doesn't mean he stops wanting to kiss your pretty face until your lips are swollen and your cheeks dusted in pink and red)
The worst is that he KNOWS that you're teasing him but he can't help it okay, you found his achilles heel  </3
Anyways, of course, when the opposing team arrives and they warm-up, you want your…not boyfriend but close enough boy friend to stop moping around (Makki begged you: ''please do something, he won't clown the others or joke around with me, all he does is sulking'')
Even without Takahiro coming up though, you would have gone to him before the game but it just makes it more adorable and hilarious bc he is a bit dumb there, I mean?? The only hand you're holding (and love doing whenever possible) does not belong to either Makki, Iwaizumi, Oikawa, or anyone else for that matter
It wasn't an easy task to discreetly rob him off of his other tricot but you managed
So, while they were doing their warm-up drills you - with Hanamakis help - sneaked into the gym
wearing HIS number on your back and front, together with a pair of jeans that he had complimented on dates before (they make your backside look amazing and you can't tell me that he does not appreciate a nice ass)
After you teased him with the others for so long, he immediately perked up when Hanamaki playfully wolf-whistled at you from across the gym, adding an ''You look amazing, Y/N-chan. Wanna get some food later?''
(Makki and you - overdramatically calling each other Taka-chan & Y/N-chan whenever possible to mock Oikawa a bit as well - ended up being best friends. bonus: you both LOVE to irritate Mattsun every now and then since he really only looses some of his composure in relation to you)
glaring at his best friend, Matsukawa strode over to you and dragged you right out of the gym again
then, a few minutes of silence
him checking you out kind of hungrily, longingly (trying not to be obvious about it, too)
before you finally relent and pull him down, standing on your tiptoes
To flick his forehead with all the strength in your fingers :)
‘’The fuck, Y/N.’’
''You are a fucking morron, Issei, and you hopefully know that.'' you sigh, pressing your lips against the point your fingers had hit against to sooth it
Avoiding your gaze - hiding his excited blush - he answered with a noncommitting grunt and a shrug
''you better win this game, and warm up my hands right after, you let them turn to popsicles while not doing your job for nearly two days only bc you were petty''
The smile that now curled his lips while nodding was genuine
not the sarcastic one or the teasing smirk he wore usually for everyone to see
a small, very pleased, and very happy smile, one he offered rarely and only to you
After the game - and having to watch other people ogle your nicely hugged curves even with you wearing his shirt and yelling his name for at least 2/3 of the time - he swept you off of your feet by openly and rather dramatically kissing you all Disney-like (earning some gagging noises from his friends) and asking you out in the same over-the-top kind of way
Don't worry though, he usually only gets frisky 1. when you two are alone
2. when you both decide to annoy the others (but that's more of a show and lots of unnecessary nicknames and sounds - honestly please have some decency children are watching)
and 3. when he becomes insecure jealous
You know if it's the jealousy burning in him
he's attempting to not show it to you
Yet his grip on your waist is a smidge stronger, his slightly amused expression a bit too tight, too strained to be natural, and he's uncooperative…more than usual
This specific thing happened, just now
''Mattsun…'' you murmur, struggling to turn around in his vice-like grip.
You tried to loosen his arms around your waist a few times while ranting about the mathematical problem and the upcoming test you had, hoping he would offer you his help. To no avail. He probably didn't really realize that he was squeezing you to death or tuning you out. This is why you resorted to wiggling around in his hold until you were finally facing your huffy boyfriend. One of your hands on his biceps and your other playing with the hair in his neck in hopes to calm him down a bit.
''Who spat in your breakfast this morning, you're usually not that grumpy,'' you continue softly, your tone between teasing and worry. Even though you and Hanamaki enjoy riling him up you both always make sure to stay inside a certain limit. Nothing you couldn't solve with an apology, sweet kisses, and genuine assurances that it was nothing more than a joke. In the end, he is the only person that causes your heart to beat faster. The one you like…love. You knew that you loved him for some time now, the desire to have a perfect moment to announce it is the only thing keeping you from saying it out loud.
The shrug you receive wouldn't do it though. Him tending to let it consume him until he snaps is not good. Not for him, and for the relationship of the both of you as well. ''Issei, come on,..'' you gently prod, ''…tell me. Stop living up to your name and talk to me,''
There were a lot of reactions you expected. Another huff maybe, his usual 'Nothing' or even the true reason for his behavior. What you did not expect though was his annoyed groan and him nearly growling at you. ''Y/N, fucking leave it. Stop sticking your nose into my business. Don't you get that I don't want to talk?!''
For a second your breath hitches. The annoyance…slight anger in his voice startling you. ''Jesus fucking Christ, fine,'' you curse - now irritated yourself. It caught him off-guard enough due to its rareness of you cussing out loud. At least enough to push against his chest and free yourself off of his hold, successfully stopping him from just hiding his face away in your neck. ''If that’s what you want, fine. I'm sorry for worrying about you, Matsukawa.'' you say provokingly before you let out a small sigh, ''I'll go to class, maybe Hajime is back from chasing the Captain and can actually help me with math…listens to me, to begin with. Not mope around to the point of ignoring me for some unknown reason.'' with that said you turn around on your heels and leave him standing.
You know he would eventually come around in the next few hours. You hope. Mattsun wasn't or rather isn't angry with you. Otherwise, he wouldn't have been as close to you as he had been but his inability to merely talk with you about what was and is bothering him proves to be one of the few reasons that are able to drive you up the wall.
Mathematics being mathematics, the problem wasn't just simply explained within those ten minutes before class started.
If things were normal, you wouldn't be as bothered as you are right now though. Issei would find a way to get it into your pretty little head. He knew how to explain and what to transcribe for you to get the idea behind all those letters and lines scrawled between the numbers.
The problem is that you usually did this in the calmness of your rooms on the weekend. As it seems though, did most people get the problem from the get to go and the teacher decided to write the topical test in your afternoon class today instead of next week, so she could begin with the new thematic on Monday.
Alas, you're fucked.
Not only would you get the worst grade in your whole mathematical carrier but you also couldn't ask your boyfriend, and listen to his deep gentle yet teasing voice explaining stupid equations to you with him being so infuriatingly upset over whatever.
To your luck, Iwaizumi offers to be your knight in shining armor in extreme times of need. (He tried to convince you to just go to Mattsun because ''He's head over heels for you, don't tell me a stupid fight holds you both back from being insufferable together, Y/N'' - ''We can't be fighting, when he doesn't talk or listen to me.''.) Sacrificing a free hour and his precious lunchtime sitting on the school's rooftop with you, he explains the procedure over and over again.
After what felt like a whole notebook full of wrong exercises and another one with their corrected versions, the structure of the problem does finally make sense to you. Now cheerfully humming, you look over older tasks you didn't get before when he decides to speak up.
''Y/N?'' Iwaizumi asks, his voice completely calm and…soothing?
''Hmm…'' you hum letting him know that you're listening while correcting another exercise.
''Mattsun will relax once we won that game, okay? Don't be so hard on him.'' His words caught you off-guard, which leads you to look up, question mark clear on your face. ''It's against Akumahebi? The ones that provoked and insulted him so underhandedly last time? Hit all his nerves spot on?'' he adds questioning.
Lips forming a big 'O'. You remember today's opponents vividly.
Seijoh first played against them at the end of your second year, a few weeks after you and Mattsun had started talking with different intentions than throwing terrible pick up lines at each other. Foremost for shit and giggles but actually starting to have hope that the other might mean it.
They stood at the other side of the net and began with their unsportsmanlike strategy by haunting him. ''Imagine thinking someone so mediocre could be rightfully on the field next to players like your ace, could compete against someone like Iwaizumi Hajime.'' or ''The only reason you're on the field is your height, the first years will take over your spot sooner than you think. You are replaceable after all.''. There was no obvious reason for them to pick out Issei but they did. Hissing different things under their breath. You guessed that it's because he always looked so unbothered. As if nothing could wilt his stupidly attractive lopsided smirk.
Afterward, the four of you had a hard time convincing him that those snakes knew shit. That he was on the team for his skills, his amazing blocking, and strategical thinking ability, not his height. That he would be a regular until he left the volleyball club and that he was respected by all of his kouhais.
''Shit,…them? Really?'' you jut our your lower lip. ''He didn't tell me...but I also didn't ask.'' you admit guiltily. ''Well, then I have to cheer extra loud for Issei, I think.'' A triumphant smile stretches across your face, gripping the collar of your uniform with one and pulling up the collar of the jersey underneath with the other. Enough to see the Seijoh colors to come to light. You had stolen it out of your boyfriend's bag two days ago after he went to the bathroom and had hidden it in your desk drawer until today. You nearly forgot to put it on after you accidentally slept in this morning, so you kind of just threw it over your head while hoping to not fall over trying to get into your tights. ''I'm ready to scream at the top of my lungs for my favorite player,…'' you say before you at least partly bashful add ''…no offense. You are my second favorite star player, Haji.''
At that, Iwaizumi simply laughs and playfully pushes against your shoulder.
Tumblr media
Later that evening you found yourself wearing one of Issei's ridiculously large pullovers and sweatpants, sitting wrapped up in blankets on your couch in the living room. Your chest hurting from swallowed and choked up sobs. Even though your parents weren't home when you arrived and wouldn't be for the next two days, enjoying a long-planned short vacation, you didn't allow yourself to cry. A gory horror movie on-screen meant to distract you from your thoughts ends up being nothing more than background noises while wallowing in self-pity.
At one point, Oikawa and Iwaizumi stood at your door - even though you hoped that it would be a certain boy you loved - worried glances boring into your skull from the first second on, and never ceasing.
You didn't even know if your team won or lost. It wasn't like you asked them either.
All you cared for is Issei. Issei, who seemingly decided that he would stop caring for you.

Iwaizumi-senpai and Y/N-senpai would make an adorable couple, don't you think?
You leaving him to make true on your words intensified the insecurities that had just started to brood underneath the surface a few days ago. He couldn't help it, but he definitely would not share those silly thoughts with you.
Issei knew they were wrong. But that didn't stop them from invading the darkest corners of his brain.
You have to agree that Y/N-san and Iwaizumi-san seem really close.
Overhearing the first years giggling about his girlfriend and one of his best friends being a cute couple amplified all of it. Also…he realized just now…since when do you call Iwaizumi by his name? When did he allow you to call him Hajime?
''Have you seen him smile like that with another girl? I, for my part, haven't seen that smile off the court where he can do the thing he loves the most.''
''Oh, stop, Y/N-senpai has a boyfriend! Don't you know? I feel uncomfortable speculating about something like that.''
'' 'Course, I know! I just say that, if I were in a relationship with someone, I'd want my boyfriend to be a bit more…relationship-y about it, you know? Like, yeah, they hold hands and they hug. But all they do besides this is banter meaninglessly…more like friends, not like a couple should behave! Iwaizumi-san, though, even without being as close to her bodily, gives off more intense boyfriend vibes than this other player.''
''His name is Matsuka-''
‘'And, Y/N-senpai calls him Hajime, I think she even said Haji once, isn't that cute?!''
''Stop it, stupid! You shouldn't be so loud with your words, you might spread something accidentally. And just because she gives them nicknames doesn't imply anything. I'm also giving you nicknames! And, she looks happy with Matsu-''
‘'Yeah yeah, but you don't like me like that. Anyway, just think about it! Would you really say no to someone like Iwaizumi-san though…? What I'd give for him to at least look at me like that. If I were Y/N-sa-''
''You aren't, can we go now, don’t wanna be late for class because of you again.''
Iwaizumi did seem to feel extra relaxed around you. And you seemed to like his presence as well.
What if those first years had a point?
For the second time that day, he growled.
No, there was nothing to doubt or think about. It wasn't unusual of you to use their names. You literally started calling Hanamaki 'Taka-chan' within 10 minutes of knowing each other. Making friends was easy for you, and that you and Iwaizumi were in the same class with Oikawa probably just strengthened your bond with each other to endure the Captain's antics.
Issei nodded to himself, decidedly ignoring the little whisper of doubt in the back of his mind for now.
''I am not jealous.'' The black-haired student repeated this sentence in his mind over and over again. His best friend wouldn't do such a thing as 'stealing you away', nor would you leave him like that. People should shut their mouths. Mind their own problems. And because of him definitely not being insecure jealous, there was nothing he had to tell you.
Around lunchtime, Matsukawa decided to make good on his words and apologize to you. He would explain that he just felt on edge due to the game against this specific team, you would forgive him and then things would be back to normal…hopefully. The problem was, that he couldn't find you. Not in your classroom nor with your friends, who didn't have any idea regarding your whereabouts as well.
The dark-haired blocker was about to send you a message to ask you to meet him before your last lesson and his volleyball practice when he hears your beautiful laugh coming from the staircase right in front of him. Pressing himself to the wall he watches you coming down from the school roof with Iwaizumi, jumping into his arms with a blinding smile and running off to your class a second later.
''Would you really say no to someone like Iwaizumi?  ~ Imagine thinking you could compete against someone like your ace.''
With the greasy, suffocating feeling of jealousy burning in the pit of his stomach, he storms off in the other direction.
Right before warming up for the game in the afternoon, he heard you chatting with Hanamaki in front of the locker room while he was changing. And while the door opened - Kyoutani walking in and Oikawa leaving to fullfil his captain duties conscientiously - he looked at his strawberry haired friend and your back. For the split second he could see you, he realized just how much having you around all day means to him. His eyes wandered. Over your softly shining hair. Slowly outlining your in Seijoh-colours clad shoulders, down your arms to your elbow where they are bent to cross in front of your chest to hold your jacket and uniform pullover. Then down your back and-
With an annoyed huff, he found himself throwing his locker door in its lock, bending down to pull up his knee pads more aggressively than necessary. Ignoring the curious looks and whispers from his teammates he simply grunted out an Ok, when Makki came in telling him that you would be waiting for him.

"Hey, Y/N-chan, what I meant to ask you earlier…why were you wearing Iwa-chan's shirt." Oikawa carefully questions, his perfectly shaped eyebrow shooting up to emphasize his words.
"I diD wHAT NOW?" - "She did what?!"
Without wasting a second you jump up from under your blanket mountain and sprint up the stairs to your room to look through your hamper.
There it was, that goddamn tricot. A 4 looking right back at you instead of a 3 or 2. It brought every process of thought to an halt.
"But I- 2 days- what, I got this- I was in-" you stop again, slowly turning your head to Iwaizumi, pointing at him. "Since when were you missing this?"
The ace immediately straightens up under your intense gaze. "Three days? No two? Since our last practice, I guess. Kyoutani and Yahaba had some…problems and fought it out in the locker room. But I…wasn't missing it! I thought that it might be in the laundry by accident.'' he answers hesitantly.
You blink. A few times. Nod. And then a loud laugh starts to bubble out of you, interchanging itself with heavy sobs, forcing you to fold into yourself  and hide your face in your hands.
With a worried expression, Oikawa kneels down beside you. ''Y/N-chan…are you okay?''
"He's so fucking dumb, Tooru, why do I even love him? And I am, too!" You hiccup pitifully. "Makki and he switch numbers from time to time, in case you haven't realized. They say it's because it doesn't really matter in the end, it’s fun to confuse others and the worst that could happen is that they forget to wash it before the other wears it,'' you add, a little laugh escapes your lips before your voice breaks in favor of a hiccup again. ''I guess they were about to do that again but with Mad Dog on the loose, the chaos was enough to mix up all the shirts on the bench completely. And since I stole this one secretly out of Issei's bag when he went to the bathroom and quickly hid it to surprise him today, I accidentally grabbed the wrong one instead of his without realizing it."
You gasp for air, your stuffed nose making it difficult to breathe properly. "And then you have to play against this team, out of all possibilities, it's them! So, of course, he's already fed up, and then I'm wearing Hajimes number who he already kind of feels inferior to on the court, where he's the ace and vice-captain first and not his best friend, due to this stupid fucks picking on his insecurities. Fuck!"
For a second you bury your head in your hands again. "No, you know what, fuck this. I don't need him to bury that shit in himself again, or to have stupid thoughts, or leave me because of it'' you furiously hiccup, standing up. ''I can go over, too, and put that behind us.''
The first time you actually took a second to breathe and evaluate the situation, you had already rung the bell at the Matsukawa family house. Thrice. For good measure. (And so he knew that there's no way out, that you wouldn't leave.) After waiting for solid 5 minutes - knowing that he'd usually reach the door in under a minute, one if he had napped before, you glare at the window above. A strawberry pink colored patch of hair peek out from underneath.
''Alright, if that's what you want'' you grumble. Going over to the trellis and climbing up on it onto the small canopy before finalizing your unauthorized entry by narrowing your furious eyes at two unbelieving faces. Well…he should never have dared you to try to enter his room like this for a joke in the first place when you first became friends. Now, he would definitely not escape you.
''Open. Now. I will break this dumb window, if that's the only way to get you to talk to me, Issei.''
In the end, minutes of starring later, Hanamaki relents and opens the window. ''Thanks,'' you say sweetly before you chop at the strawberry haired boy's side. ''Y/N-chan, I thought we had something special,'' he wheezes, holding his side.
''We have a talk later, Makki, this was only for not opening the door now'' you say, promptly throwing him out of your boyfriend's room. Your voice seemed to sound scary enough for him to leave rather freely. Or at least it made clear that there was no space for buts. That this was a talk between Mattsun and You. Alone with your boyfriend, you turn around to face Matsukawa. To glare at him.
''What do yo-'' - ''Shut up, Issei. You're going to listen and talk to me right now without filter.'' you hiss. While he tried to keep his cool demeanor, the black-haired boy swung his legs off of the bed to sit properly and not slouch, wanting to listen to you. Wanting you to explain…probably.
''Issei, you morron, you deserve the hardest forehead flick in the history of forehead flicks! What were you thinking?! Why didn't you just tell me that it was them you had to play against today? I would have done everything for you to feel better. I would have been understanding of your mood because I know what they did, but no. You decide to be jealous instead? Of Hajime out of all people? Give me a statement and I will refute it within seconds, whatever you want. Come one, test me. And I dare you to shrug just once,...just once!, and I will - even though I lo-. I will freaking kick your dumb ass to the moon..''
A snort, unfairly attractive and so very Mattsun, leaves him. ''As if you could reach that hig-'' - ''Thin fucking ice, Matsukawa.''
With a sigh, he scratches the back of his neck. ''Why were you saying you want to 'support' your favorite player when you were wearing Iwa's shirt? I mean I can’t prescribe who you like, I guess, it’s your decision...but,...hah,...maybe don’t make it sound...I dont know.'' Issei asks straight away, watching the ground between you.
''Because certain volleyball players I know like to change jersey numbers after practice. And because of Mad Dog-chan being on the hunt for Yahaba's head, a very specific already mentioned player took the wrong shirt with him, which ended with me accidentally stealing said wrong shirt.'' you vaguely answer, watching him tense up. ''Now it's my turn. Why are you so specifically bothered by it being Hajimes?''
''I…it's-'' looking up, he met your eyes already narrowing again. You expect him to say 'It's nothing'. No, it was important to say it now, even if it was embarrassing. ''I heard people talking,...saying that he'd be better for you than me. That…that you liking him that way is just a question of time. And while I was sure that that's not true…I asked myself…am I really what Y/N wants? Are you bothered by the way we are in public? Are we couple-y enough for you? I was on my way to apologize when I saw you both coming from the roof. You seemed so happy, so excited. I started to worry…that if he was to ask you out…would you truly choose me? Do I make you look and feel as happy as you seemed to be earlier with Iwa?''
Him not meeting your eyes bothers you. How could he understand if he's not looking? You slowly walk over, giving him time to say stop or move away from you…but he doesn't. Standing between his legs you gently cup his cheeks and make him look up into your eyes. Make him see.
''Let's start somewhere…thank you for being open and honest with me. Okay, firstly, I was on the roof with him so he could explain math to me. I didn't want to sit in a classroom and let others hear how troubled I was by what seems to be one of the easiest mathematical equations in existence. And since I was occupying his lunch break, Haji at least wanted to have some quiet for eating if he sacrifices his time like that.'' you chuckle slightly before you meet his eyes again.
''Secondly,...Issei,'' you murmur now, caressing his cheeks gently. ''why would you believe things about our relationship coming from people that don't take part in it? Hm? They don't know us. They don't get to spend nap time with us, arcade and ramen dates, or movie nights. They don't see how you treat me away from curious eyes and ears. We aren't any less of a couple just because others have a different opinion on how couples should be to the public eye.'' you say, your undertone loving and warm. ''It's not Iwaizumi who I love. I have chosen you because you are the one. I love you.'' you emphasize the words. You never imagined the moment to be like that, but it feels right to come clean with the depth of your feelings now. His cheeks heating up in between your hands is an extra treat.
''I love you when you smile all lazily at me after sleeping. I love you when your voice drips with sarcasm and mischief. I love you when we argue over who has ultimately won the worst pick-up line contest - which is me by the way.'' you grin, shushing his protest by resting your thumb on his lips. ''I love you even when we fight. When you get jealous and grumpy. I love you even though you regularly tell Taka-chan how you'd sell me to Satan for a corn chip, just to mention this stupid bird meme. I love you to bits, you sweet but silly idiot, and I'd chose you all over again if I was to wake up in another parallel universe. Because I know, that you'll always treat me right. Because I'm sure that you feel this, too.''
While you were speaking, your boyfriend's arms slowly but steadily started to move past the last bit of resistance, wrapping them loosely around you and pulling you tighter with every said word.
''I mean it when I say that I get why you felt so uneasy today. However they do it, they manage to crawl under your skin. And that's human, Issei. To be overwhelmed, anxious, or insecure. But please, don't risk us falling apart by letting it eat away on you silently.'' You whisper.
''Y/N, I'm sorry…and I promise to try and talk when I feel bothered again. And-'' A surprised squeak leaves your lips at the sudden movement of your boyfriend. ‘’I love you, too.’’ Giggling, you look up to the dark-haired blocker, who is now towering over you, caging you in his arms. ''You look so irrestistable in my clothes, you should wear them more often.'' Issei continues, the smirk on his lips finally being close to the one he usually wore, eyeing you still wearing his way to big pants and sweatshirt. Then, Mattsun finally - Finally! - leans down to kiss you thoroughly, seemingly keen on making up for the wasted time. Nibbling on your lip, tasting and teasing you, eliciting sweet little sounds that sound oh so much like heaven. He had missed this the whole day.
Deciding to give the both of you a second to breathe, he leans back enough to study your now glowing expression. You lick your lips, watching a suddenly burning interest flaring up in his eyes due to the breathlessness in your voice. ''I have a proposition, you know.'' You begin, softly tracing his features with your pointer finger, smiling innocently. ''If you don't want people to doubt our closeness in this relationship…maybe you should show them just how good you make me feel when I have you all to myself, hm?'' You murmur with a seducing tone, watching him process your words, his slightly heated gaze not leaving yours.
Him diving right back in and whispering a litany of 'I love yous' was answer enough.

Note
some friends to lovers hcs for sakusa pls? i've been thirsting over him for a while and seeing him in the recent manga chapters plus season 4 is just--
same fam, same. its been a whole mess over here. yikes this got long
— you are 210% that neighbor who his parents rely on to acclimate their son into being a somewhat decent member of society. is it a hardy task for someone at the age of six? yeah. was sakusa an absolute shit at that age too? of course. but he stopped that one kid from pulling your hair in class that day so he’s basically your unofficial hero. even if it was only because apparently you had ‘cooties’.
— naturally you continued to have this unknown disease for most of your life. but apparently so did everyone else in Japan. except when you got older it simply became known as- physical contact.
— “kiyoomi, why don’t you play outside with your friend?”
—“ they’re dirty.”
— sticks and stone may break your bones but the mud streaked across your face and hands would most certainly kill sakusa. or at least that’s what you thought at the age of seven when you went grab him off his front porch anyway. he sort of whined and pushed you for it, causing you to fall back on your rear, much to his parents obvious disdain. or as so you gathered as you smirked over their shoulder as they carried you inside, earning an extra few years of sakusa’s ire.
— “yoomi, lets play tag.”
— “it’s kiyoomi. and no, play by yourself.”
— “sakusa-san, yoomi doesn’t want to-“
— “run”
— the two of you were ‘reluctant’ friends until the age of eight. more or less, sakusa was required to spend at least half an hour outside with you a daily. half way through that the tenture you had mercy on him and introduced him to video games within the safety of his own home. sakusa has zero interest in crash bandicoot, but he likes you a little more for your concede.
— but his parents knew what they were doing when they put their son’s social reputation into your hands. for a while you were his only friend but occasionally you were able to integrate him into society. through little things like sitting down your lunch next to his and offering to be his partner in project.
— “i don’t need your help with this.”
— “maybe, but i need yours, so pretty please.”
— sakusa was a young genius and it would benefit you to take advantage of that feature. call it payment for all your years of servitude.
— the only time you found yourself not needing to be a crutch in his life was when he was playing volleyball. it was an option during recess to give the students an opportunity to scout out interests in athletic ventures. the sport was almost too perfect for sakusa- as an indoor requirement with almost no physical contact. it was his niche. a part of society that catered to his needs in a way that didn’t require your intervention.
— naturally, others began taking notice of his talents. other students were more likely to invite him for games during breaks- most knowing to keep their distance and touch to a limit. his own enjoyment of the sport slowly geared him towards pseudo-friendships that allowed him to play more and garner his skill set.
— “im going to try out for the volleyball club.”
— of course you knew this much. it was what he was so obviously looking forward to the most in junior high. it was just his decision to share his own thought with you the struck home.
— “yeah? i guess i should get some cheers ready for you games, eh?”
— he flinches away from your enthusiasm, his face portraying a mistake in letting you know so soon. but not once did he ever deter you from coming. in fact, you continued to be made aware of each an every upcoming match regardless of importance.
— “we have a practice match against haizen today.”
— wasn’t the most significant but he invited you so you’d be there. probably more vocal than you needed to be but he could mark your attendance and that’s all that mattered.
— a small part of you was worried that volleyball would take your place. it obviously had more suitable attributes than you. but it almost became a staple in your evolving relationship.
— in fact the first game you missed inflicted the first real argument you could remember having with sakusa. it surprised even his parents when you met him the next day to walk to class. you were use to a quiet shoulder but not a cold shoulder.
— “is something wrong?”
— it continued for most of the trip until you couldn’t take it anymore and reached for his arm. instead of shaking you off, he turns on you, gaze lit a flame with an emotion you didn’t recognize.
— “i had a game and you didn’t show up.”
— thinking back you did recall most of the students congregating towards the gym after class. it vaguely registered but you’d seen less of sakusa that day and more of pressing from your teacher to get your grades in order.
— “i had to stay back with my instructor. i needed help with my studies.”
— it was a little embarrassing- not something you wanted to admit. especially to someone like sakusa who obviously excelled where you fell short.
— “you’re an idiot. you come to me for that. ill help you after my games.”
— perphas it was in that moment that you should have realized that sakusa was more cognitive of his reliance than you were.
— what he does realize it how much he’s going to have to help you if he intended for you to join him at itachiyama. the school had shown interest in him earlier than year and it was mutual. but it’s prestige called for academics when sports weren’t your strong suit.
— matches weren’t the only appointments sakusa held you to. nearly everyday after class, whether your place or his, he made himself present while you studied. he wasn’t an overbearing tutor but he called you out in your faults and made you aware of mistakes before they became a habit. he wasn’t going to make you a super genius but you would become a student worthy of acceptance.
— the two of you were building something that only your parents noticed at first while watching from the doorway. itachiyama would be a dynamic chapter for both of you.
— the title of that chapter is: volleyball. because wow does that become an even bigger part of your life. itachiyama was already a powerhouse before sakusa but now he’s a cog in the wheel and an important one at that. quickly climbing ranks and becoming an imperative part of the team. if only he was more receptive to his newly popular status.
— he was still the same old germaphobe- avoiding crowds and wanting to get home as soon as possible to shower in his own tub instead of the school issued ones.
— his personality sort of highlighted your presence more than you expected. but given sakusa’s overall avoidance of unnecessary interactions, it shouldn’t have been much of a surprise.
— “he can be a bit much, but please take care of him.”
— above your bowed head, his older teammate coo and awe at sakusa’s cute little friend. this of course leads to more teasing for him but it’s all part of being part of a team- a larger whole. something you were willing to give up a bit of sakusa for.
— “are you two dating or something?”
— oh but that. you get a lot of that. not just by his teammates either. everyone seems to notice how sakusa tolerates you more than anyone else. though part of you wants to point out to his fan base that they would get a lot further if they just gave him his space. -yet here you were huddled up close in the library while he looked over your school work, so what could you say to that?
— “are you paying attention?”
— “hey, i got most of these right. give me a break.”
— not thinking about it, you go to ruffle his hair as a retort. an action sure to give you his ire- but it doesn’t? in fact his gaze doesn’t even lift from his book. and is he leaning closer? weird.
— sakusa is making rapid progress not only within tokyo but on a national level. it’s one of his teammates that points out his accomplishments to you one day while you’re waiting for sakusa to emerge from the locker rooms.
— “your boyfriend is really something else. already the ace of the team and he’s climbing the stats nationally too. you must be proud.”
— you are proud. very impressed, in fact. but sakusa is not your boyfriend. an important note that you most certainly do not get to point out because now sakusa is here and is corralling you towards the exit from his pressure of his chest against your back.
— he’s much more hands on now. less in tolerating your touch and more so initiating his own. it’s a late realization but most of your attention is stuck on that same teammate who is waving mischievously from the door.
— but oh man. it’s becoming a lot more obvious to you now when sakusa offers to hold you books while you change your shoes, and holding on to them even as you travel to class. he sits a little bit closer to you during study hall now, the erratic hitter of your knee brushing against his with every jerk up.
— “...are you okay, ‘yoomi?”
— he doesn’t complain about the name. not even a pinch of his brow, just confusion as he peers down at you.
— “im fine.”
— huh
— it’s all fun and games until his fingers catch yours one day while you walk side by side. it seemed like a fluke, just an accidental swing and bump. but then they’re latching and now you’re connected?
— “yoomi?”
— “it’s cold”
— yeah. okay, fair enough.
— periodic becomes occasional and now it’s a habit.
— and of course everyone takes notice. because sure sakusa tolerates you more than most. but now there’s a basis for it.
— “ah, so tables have turned.”
— “i knew it.”
— “top in the nation and already dating. our little kohai is such a pillar.”
— you’re beyond overwhelmed. worse because kiyoomi looks mildly irritated but doesn’t seem to be denying any of it.
— and you just have to ask.
— “yoomi are we dating?”
— because wow, only yesterday it seemed like he was still just your best friend. one who held your hand, shared his lunch, fell asleep on your shoulder in more than one occasion-
“— “we’re together. we’ve always been.”
— okay, yeah but context here.
— but then he’s dragging down the mask across his face, letting it hang under his chin. his lips are on your temple and phew, that’s new.
— “we should get home. i have a match tomorrow.”
— a game that becomes a statement in more ways than one.
— “ooh, is that sakusa’s jacket? so the rumors are true.”
— you fumble with the sleeves that seems to be determined to swallow up your hands. when he’d first offered it to you, it seemed so natural.
— “you might get cold.”
— god your boyf-... friend was so confusing.
— “not really. he hasn’t asked.”
— your classmate seems unconvinced but doesn’t comment further. that’s doesn’t say the same for the rest of the class who use every opportunity to chip at your resolve.
— “haven’t they been dating the whole time?”
— “they always hold hands now.”
— “i mean that’s his jacket isn’t it? it’s he like a germaphobe?”
— it’s getting harder to concentrate on the game. and certainly doesn’t help with every glance sakusa tosses up into the stands. by the end of the match, you’re beyond frazzled and ready to just sakusa the second he emerges from the gym.
— his teammate offer thanks in exchange for your praises on a game well won. it helps to distract you for a brief moment-but there he is now.
— his fingers slip befeeen yours like they belong and you can’t find the voice to complain. after congratulating him, there’s not much more said on your part. he walks you to your doorstep, not just the entrance, and lets his hand fall away. yet you both linger.
— “are we-“
— “are you-“
— when it comes down to it. obviously sakusa fails when it comes to words and actions seem to speak clearly.
— sakusa doesn’t protest when you reach up and undo his face mask for him. going as far as to lower his head, aware of your intentions, when you lean in.
— it’s a short kiss. a testing peck to balance in the shallow end before diving deep. his nose nudges yours and it’s your laugh that breaks the kiss.
— kiss-with kiyoomi sakusa-your once reluctant friend and now?
— sakusa leans in again. this time his hand on your shoulder for stabilization. there’s no tongue or extra touches. it’s just the act.
— life is all about changes.
— you smile and decide, yeah, you can do this.
— before he can leave, however, he’s tugging at the collar of his jacket.
— “i prefer to use my own detergent. but you can have it back tomorrow.”
— or maybe just some adjustments.

“You want the usual [y/n]?” Osamu called from behind the counter.
“Sure…” You were still preoccupied with the table of people staring at you expectantly. They were all wearing black sweats except for one guy with glasses who was in a suit. Taking a closer look, you recognized the logo to be the same as the one on the sweater you were currently returning to Atsumu. You’d been awkwardly standing staring at them while they stared at you for what felt like a solid minute.
“Oh [y/n]! Didja just get here?”, Atsumu stepped out of the bathroom, breaking the awkward silence.
Before you could say anything, the glasses guy spoke up. “I didn’t know you had a girlfriend Atsumu.”
WHAT? Where did this misunderstanding come from? Sure you had his sweater, but agh!!!
“I’m not his girlfriend”, you quickly shut it down.
“Riiiight.” This time a dude with spikey gray hair piped in. “So, how long have you and Tsum Tsum been together”
“I just told you we aren’t together”
“I get it. I get it.” Spikey hair guy winked.
You let out an exasperated sigh. “I don’t think you do”
“Wow so cute! Atsumu’s so lucky.” A guy with bright orange hair chimed in. “Your secret’s safe with us [y/n]”
What the heck? Did they all have selective hearing?
“There is no secret! Atsumu, tell them!”, You turned to Atsumu, raising your eyebrows.
“What can I say? I can’t help being this charmin’”, Atsumu held up his hands innocently.
“Oh shut up lemon head”, you sharply snapped.
The whole restaurant burst out laughing at that. Even the guy in a mask who'd been pretty quiet was chuckling. You quickly went around and did some introductions.
“If you aren’t dating, how do you know each other?”, the glasses guy, Akaashi, asked.
“A series of unfortunate encounters.” You cringed recalling the past few weeks.
“‘Tsumu crashed her blind dates”, Osamu called from the prep station where he was rolling onigiri.
“Why am I not surprised”, the guy with the mask, Sakusa spoke up.
“Yeah. Blondie over here has been wreaking havoc on my life.”
“I dunno what you’re talking about”, Atsumu said with a scoff.
“So, how do you know him?”, You turned the question around. You had a pretty good guess, but you didn’t want to let Atsumu know that you’d been stalking him online.
“Oh. We’re Tsum Tsum’s teammates, except Akaashi here who’s my friend from high school”, Bokuto answered.
“Yeah, we’re volleyball players for the MSBY Black Jackals”, Hinata said proudly.
“Wow! That’s pretty cool”, you tried to act surprised.
“You probably didn’t know, but I’m kinda a big deal. I’m even on tv.” Leave it to Atsumu to turn this into an opportunity to stoke his ego. You rolled your eyes.
“Lucky you ‘Tsumu, thanks to that all your lame moments are recorded on the internet.” You could count on Osamu to have a good clapback.
“Lame moments? Like what?”
Atsumu’s face went tense.
“You should’ve seen it,” Bokuto said excitedly. “A few weeks ago we were walking into a meet and greet and ‘Tsum ‘Tsum had the craziest fall. It was hilarious”
“Ah! Wait no-“, Atsumu tried to stop his teammates, but it was too late.
“Oh, the one where he tripped off the stage?”, Akaashi asked.
“And twirled in the air”, Hinata excitedly added.
“And ended up hanging there by his pants because the waistband got caught on the edge of the stage” Bokuto barely got the words out between his loud guffaws.
“It was awesome!” Hinata shouted.
“It was terrible.” Sakusa corrected him.
“There’s no way that happened!” You cackled.
“It totally did!” Hinata exclaimed.
“They got the whole thing on camera too. You should watch it [y/n]!” Bokuto added.
Atsumu’s eyes got wide. “No, she shouldn’t!” Atsumu desperately interjected.
“Here lemme pull it up,” Bokuto said. He frowned, “Aw man my cell service is really weak.”
Atsumu sighed in relief and lazily grinned “Well that’s a real shame-“
“I have it saved on my phone”, Osamu tossed his phone to Hinata, who caught it.
“‘Samu!”
You all gathered around and watched the video. It was every bit as glorious and embarrassing as it Atsumu’s teammates described it as. By the end, you were wheezing.
You turned to Atsumu, “Can’t help being charming huh?”
“Aghhh!” He slumped over the table and buried his face in his arms.
“Wow you’re actually kinda cute when you aren’t being an asshole”
“Aww she called you cute”
“I’m pretty sure that was a roast Hinata”
~
After spending some time chatting and eating, everyone packed up and got ready to leave.
“You’re pretty funny [y/n]. We should hang out more often”, Bokuto grinned at you.
“You guys are pretty funny too”
“Oh [y/n]! You should come to our game tonight! We each get some extra tickets!” Hinata’s eyes lit up as he made his suggestion.
“Oh, I don’t know about that
“It’ll be super fun!”, Bokuto followed up.
“And its an exhibition match, so there’ll only be three sets. It won’t drag on too long.” Akaashi added.
“It sounds cool, but it’d be kinda weird to go by myself-“
“You could hang out with me at my onigiri booth if ya like,” Osamu said with a shrug.
Well if they wanted you to come that badly…
“Thanks Osamu. Okay sure! I’ll come.”
“Yay!” Bokuto and Hinata cheered. Akaashi smiled. Sakusa sighed.
As the volleyball boys filed out of the restaurant, Atsumu called out to you
“Hey can I have your number to send the ticket link to?”
“Oh sure,” He handed you his phone and you quickly typed your number into it. You handed it back to him.
“Just watch [y/n]. Tonight I’ll show ya just how cool I can be.” Atsumu had a determined look on his face.
“You’re awfully confident”
“Meet me at the back of the stadium when I win. There’s no way you’re gonna be able to say I’m not charmin’ after you see me play.”
“Whatever you say.” You chuckled.
“Well, I gotta go then. See ya later [y/n]!” Atsumu smiled at his phone, tucking it in his bag, and turned to dash after his teammates.
Wait. Did you really just give him your number?
~
Sendai Stadium. FRIDAY 7:05PM
You’d pulled up a chair next to Osamu’s onigiri cart. You were both watching as the players made their way onto the court.
Tonight, Atsumu’s team, the MSBY Black Jackals, were up against the Eastern Japan Paper Mills Raijin. The players from the Black Jackals that you met earlier were being announced on court one by one.
“Number 13. Atsumu Miya!!!”
Atsumu jogged onto the court beaming. He surveyed the crowd until his eyes locked with yours then he shot a playful wink in your direction.
After some setup, it seemed like the game was about to start. Someone tossed Atsumu the ball, and he started walking toward the back of the court.
“He’s about to serve.” Osamu filled you in.
“Oh…”
Atsumu turned and faced the court. Atsumu’s face turned serious. He raised his hand and clenched his fist. The crowd instantly snapped into silence. Hah??? What was that? Did he really just silence the crowd? Talk about fucking extra (and maybe a little hot).
Atsumu took a deep breath and tossed the ball into the air. He loped forward then leaped, sweeping his harm back. Looking up at the ball, he broke into a smile. It was a fun and childlike grin, the kind you couldn’t help but smile back at. He swung his hand forward making contact with the ball with a bang that echoed throughout the stadium. It shot across the net and slammed into the opponent's side of the court.
Woah.
He turned to look at you again. You were still stunned with amazement. He smirked in your direction and jogged to pick up the ball again.
Osamu turned to you with a chuckle. “When it comes to volleyball, ‘Tsumu’s not bad huh?”
As much as you wanted to make some kind of snarky comment, there was no hiding the fact that was probably the coolest thing you’d seen recently, maybe ever.
“…yeah”
And it didn’t stop there. He fired ace after ace, and even after his service streak was broken he didn’t stop pulling out smooth moves that captured your attention. At one point he went full-on limbo and got under an impossibly low ball while leaning back and tossed it perfectly to Bokuto, who slammed it down.
He lifted his shirt to wipe his sweat, revealing his midriff. You bit your lip. Okay. Fine. He was kind of hot, but you weren’t about to tell him that.
Soon, the Black Jackals had taken the first set. 25-18.
The second set was a much closer fight. 24-23. It was the Black Jackals match point on Atsumu’s serve. (Your favorite kind of point). He started his usual service route, silencing the crowd and tossing the ball into the air, but when he jumped something looked a little off. He didn’t smile at the ball like he usually did, and when his hand finally made contact it was a little awkward. The ball flew right into the net.
“Ugh.” Osamu frowned.
24-24
“Come on Atsumu…”, you muttered under your breath. He looked visibly disappointed.
A service ace from the opposing team.
24-25
The tables had been turned. The opposing team’s match point started. Hinata returned the serve and got the ball into the air. Atsumu tossed the ball to Sakusa who smashed it, but the opposing team managed to get it back in the air. The opposing team sent an attack flying back. It bounced off the blocker's hands and flew toward the back of Atsumu’s side of the court.
“A block out!”
Atsumu dove for the ball, but it was too late. It bounced just out of his reach. That dejected look on his face deepened.
As the final set started, the Black Jackals just couldn’t seem to grasp back the momentum. Any time they were about to catch up with the opponents in terms of points, the opponents would pull ahead again.
7-10
Atsumu set to Bokuto but failed to clear a path. The ball was met with a wall and crashed back to the court.
15-18
Atsumu dove for the ball again but couldn’t save it
21-24
Matchpoint. Atsumu’s serve again. He looked unstable as he launched himself up and slammed his hand into the ball. It flew over the net and kept flying.
The referee blew his whistle. “Out!”
Final Score. 1-2. MSBY Black Jackals Lose.
~
Atsumu told you to meet him behind the stadium when he won. Technically, he hadn’t won, but there’s no way you could just leave like this. It’s not like you were especially close to him, but you just couldn’t. He definitely didn’t need your help, and honestly it would be hypocritical for you, the queen of cynical perfectionism, to pat him on the back and tell him that losing is okay. Despite that here you were. You just wanted to talk to him.
You spotted him crouched at the bottom of the stairs leading to the back entrance. Cautiously, you called out to him, “Hey.”
He turned to look at you. He looked even more depressed than when he walked off the court. “What’re you doin’ here? I told you to come when I won”
“I…I didn’t want to leave you hanging.”
“Hah. Are you here to tell me being a loser is okay? Gimme a break. I don’t want your pity party”
You folded your arms and lifted your chin. “Who said I was here to cheer you up? Today, you’re a fucking loser.” He flinched.
“I know!” He buried his head back in his knees. “You don’t hafta rub it in.” His voice was muffled by his sweats.
“You’re a loser today, but”, You walked up to him and crouched down to his level, “this loss will pave the way for many more victories.”
He scoffed. “You don’t get it [y/n]! I wanna win today and the next time. I wanna win every time. Losers should just quit!”
“A competitive spirit like that is awesome. Nothing is more motivating, but Atsumu, that kinda energy is only useful if it’s powering you forward, not making you sulk and feel like you’re better off quitting. Am I wrong?”
He lifted his face out of his sweats to look at you. “…”
You reached out your hand. “C’mon let’s get out of here”
“I don’t need your help”
You smiled, knowing just what to say. “I know you don’t. This”, you took his hand in yours, “is me being selfish.”
He couldn’t help but crack a small grin at that. “Can’t argue with that can I?”
He gripped your hand back. You both stood up and started walking away from the stadium.
“You might be a loser, but I thought you looked really cool when I first saw you serve earlier”
“Wow [y/n] was that a genuine compliment?”
“…but I silencing the crowd was too extra don’t you think?”
“Hah. I don’t need any pigs interruptin’ me, and I’ve heard people think it looks hot.”
“Hot? Says who?”
Just like that you two were back to your usual bickering. You almost didn’t notice that he was still holding your hand.

Seventeen Scenario #10- Seungkwan: Call the Bluff
Tumblr media
Seungkwan had been seemingly on edge for a full blown week now. Where he was once affectionate he now seemed preoccupied with thoughts elsewhere. When you tried to ask other members about it they would come up with excuses or flee to anywhere free of your resentful gaze. Where you were once curious you soon turned sad and hence turned angry.
Seungkwan couldn't possibly be hiding something bad from you right? You figured it must be bad considering the others were hiding what they seemingly knew.
After going through this for almost over a week, you decided to put a stop to this that evening when Seungkwan came to visit you.
"Hey! Sorry I am so late--"
Seungkwan stopped when he saw you standing in front of the door with your arms crossed. A glare ever so present.
"Did I mention that I'm sorry for whatever it is you're mad at me for?"
"What in the world have you been up to lately?"
Seungkwan seemed genuinely confused for a moment before averting his eyes in the most obviously guilty manner.
"I don't know what you are talking about…"
You sighed to yourself. "Look me in the eye then."
Seungkwan's eyes flittered about before giving you a facial expression between a sad face and a grimace.
"I aM NoT LyiNG tO YoU?"
Seungkwan obviously thought this was a joke and that whatever he was trying to pull was something he could sneak away with by getting a laugh out of you.
Well today you weren't laughing. Seungkwan had his tricks, but tonight so did you.
"Okay…"
Seungkwan seemed relieved and was beginning to walk past you when you stepped in front of him again.
"Tonight I wanna play a game."
"What kind of game…?"
"B.S."
You explained the rules of the game at the table to Seungkwan. Players took turns putting cards down in order and the goal was to get rid of cards. Now players at some point in the game are expected to lie in order to win, and other players can call players out if they think they are lying. If they didn't lie then the accuser takes all the cards in the pile. But if they DID then the liar has to take all the cards. (HOWEVER let me point how evil it is to play this game one on one.)
Seungkwan agreed to play and seemed a bit off put as you dealt out the cards, never breaking eye contact with him.
Once the game had started, Seungkwan was no longer as chipper and gullible. What once went smoothly quickly turned to a battle of wits as Seungkwan ran out of cards in order to play honestly. And it seemed you were aware of this too. Because you continued to call him out for his BS time and time again.
"2 Aces." Seungkwan glared at you.
"2 Twos." You said.
"Now that can't be true." Seungkwan groaned.
"Are you calling BS on me? Keep in mind that you just got down to five cards. You wanna push your luck?" You had been doing this the entire game. Basically giving Seungkwan the majority of the deck, letting him slowly get rid of the excessive number of cards before simply giving it all right back to him. You had done two times already and were more than willing to do it again.
“As far as I’m concerned, that sounds like the taunt of someone who is lying!”
Seungkwan flipped your cards over to reveal the two twos, returning the blank expression he gave them. With that revelation, Seungkwan threw his cards down and put his hands out on the table ever so gently.
“Please just put me out of my misery. I can’t-- I can’t play this with you anymore.” He pleaded.
“What’s the matter? Can’t handle the lies catching up with you?”
Seungkwan groaned before huffing in whining anger.
“MY LOVE PLEASE!” He shouted.
“Can you stop beating around the bush and tell me what’s actually bothering you? I can’t stand this psychological warfare and this evil card game anymore more tonight.”
Seungkwan crossed his arms and looked up at the ceiling in defeat, and his words actually touched you. It reminded you of the real reason behind your anger, as well as your sadness.
“...Seungkwan are you cheating on me?”
Seungkwan looked down at you in surprise. “No… You haven’t either right?”
You glared at him and he apologized with a head shake. “No, could you take this seriously?”
Seungkwan uncrossed his arms and looked you in the eye. “No, I have not and don’t plan to ever cheat on you. Why do you even ask?”
“Well then do you plan to break up with me soon?” You were no longer looking at Seungkwan and opted to look off to the left. Any humor had completely left Seungkwan at this point and he tried to meet your gaze from the other side of the table.
“...What’s going on? Why are you asking all these questions? Are you okay?”
“I’m not!” You raised your voice to look at Seungkwan with tears in your eyes.
“It’s just recently you’ve been super busy and you won’t tell me what you’re doing. Both you and the members act like it’s some big secret and like it’s this taboo subject and it makes me wonder if it’s just me. Even when you are with me you seem so distant and I just end up wondering if you got tired of me.”
Seungkwan instantly rose from his seat and stood in front of you. He took your hands and guided you to the couch and gently held your shoulders. He called out to you and then you finally looked at him.
“I’m so sorry for leaving you in the dark and causing you to think about these things. I promise you that I am not cheating on and won’t ever cheat on you. Why? Because I don’t plan to break up with you. I want to have a future with you, but that’s a discussion for a little bit further in the future.”
You sniffled and Seungkwan wiped a tear away.
“The real reason I’ve been so distant is because I was planning that for my next trip, you could join me?”
You stared at him blankly as he shook his head.
“Now it wouldn’t be anything extravagant or fancy. But I was talking with the members for the past couple of days on where I thought you’d like and what sort of things they would do if they were going on a trip with their significant other…”
Seungkwan visibly blushed at the very idea of it, and it made you realize the smile that was growing on your face.
“So why keep so hush hush about it? You know you could’ve… you know… asked me???”
Seungkwan scratched the back of his neck.
“Well, I remembered you mentioned how stressful things have been for you lately and I really wanted to come up with something to help you get away from it all for once. You’ve always been good about toughing it out and getting through those hiccups, but I wanted to be able to do something for once that will help you feel refreshed. I meant to bring it up to you, but I didn’t want to give you extra pressure especially if it was just a hardly feasible whim of mine.”
You felt so touched (and embarrassed) by this information. You put your face in your hands out of embarrassment.
“I’m so sorry I accused you of those things Seungkwan. With the stress lately, I think I let my mind jump to all sorts of places. I was wrong and I’m sorry. I trust you and I absolutely love you, so I should have never gone so far to think such things… Seungkwan?”
Seungkwan had one hand over his mouth and he was no longer looking at you. You wondered if he was that upset with you.
“No, it’s fine. I’m sorry and I forgive you.”
“What’s a matter with you? Are you angry? You’re so red.”
“No! I’m not upset, rather what you said…”
You thought back to your words. “I’m sorry?”
Seungkwan sighed and looked at you. “I love you!”
You nodded in realization. “Yeah, but this isn’t the first time I’ve told you that right?”
Seungkwan shook his head and smiled. “Everytime you tell me is like the first time though. So of course I’m gonna get all happy if you say it. Especially since I love you too and this feels like a dream.” This caused you to blush and Seungkwan pointed a finger at you.
“See? Even you get a bit shy too when I say it.”
You smiled and hugged Seungkwan.
“Well, you better get used to it. We’ve got a potential trip lined up and I’m gonna be spending a good portion of it telling you how much I love you.”
“Then you should get used to it too. Because I intend to say it even three years from now when we are on our thirtieth trip together.”
“That's a lot of trips!”
You both laughed. You were glad that the whole thing was a misunderstanding and that you were able to talk it out with him. Through that conversation you realized how much Seungkwan had loved and thought of you, and you felt truly happy to have him in your life.
Disclaimer: An important thing to note in regards to these reactions/scenarios is that none of them are based on how the members are in real life and are merely a depiction that fits the fiction (as I don’t know the members personally). These are meant to be lighthearted (aside from the angst that continues to rise on this blog) and I hope they are not being taken as pure fact or reality.
If you took the time to read this reaction, thank you so much for your time. Stay happy and healthy! Make yourself a magnificent morning/afternoon/evening/night whenever in time or whenever in the world you may be and I hope to see you all again soon. Bye bye~

BnHA Chapter 258: Have You Thanked Your Twice Today
Previously on BnHA: All Might gave Deku a book with all of the previous OFA successors’ names, quirks, and career stats. Kacchan barely glanced at the book and was all “nah, boring” and JUST LIKE THAT he decided we’re not gonna get any new info, which I don’t think is very fair or considerate Kacchan but whatever!! Anyway though, All Might did reveal that Nana could fly and so Deku is going to learn to fly, so that’s fucking awesome, and then Kacchan and Deku had a moment of being bratty siblings together which I framed and put on my wall, so that was also very enjoyable. Back at the 1-A dorms we learned that Todoroki can’t cook, and the kids had a New Year’s party and talked about how they’re gonna be second years soon and how everything is just SO GREAT AND GOOD AND LIFE IS GOOD, and elsewhere All Might sat outside the teacher’s dorms and had a gorgeous fucking conversation with Aizawa that gave me all the feels. The chapter then ended with a THREE MONTH TIMESKIP to late March when apparently everything is about to go to shit. So yeah. Quite a lot to process there.
Today on BnHA: Hawks spends basically the entire chapter very slowly explaining to us that he became best friends with Twice, and it paid off dividends on account of Twice deciding that Hawks is definitely trustworthy and he should definitely tell him exactly where Tomura is off hiding in the mountains of Kyoto, because that’s the kind of extremely sensitive strategic intel that real best friends don’t keep from one another! Can you guys believe Hawks spent all that time trying to cozy up to fucking Dabi of all people when this whole time Twice was right fucking there. I bet you Twice would never have asked him to kill Best Jeanist and tote around his remains in a knapsack. Anyway so the chapter ends with the heroes launching what I assume is a surprise attack in where I assume is Kyoto, which probably explains that whole “on that day the heroes vanished” bit from the previous chapter. So let’s all wish them good luck, especially because THEY BROUGHT THE FUCKING KIDS WITH THEM GODDAMMIT. Oh my babies. Please be safe.
so I think I’m gonna go back to the Friday schedule since it just works better for me. just gotta remember to take the translations with a grain of salt, but all in all the quality last week wasn’t too bad, and overall the pros outweigh the cons
(ETA: the quality actually went down a lot this time honestly, but Friday still > Sunday in terms of me having the time to read this, so it is what it is.)
well this is interesting!
Tumblr media
“in the absence of Endeavor” ? ??? the what now??? “oh yeah did we forget to mention, he’s gone now. we did some focus groups and made a few tweaks based on what the fans said they wanted.” well shit. let this be a warning to you all. it can happen JUST LIKE THAT
um. but I mean, that’s all well and good but uhhhh. [nervous glance toward Ujiko, Tomura, the 100k army, and the 11 noumus] ...
but maybe he’s just absent for the cover though. (ETA: yeah this makes a lot more sense after reading the last page of this chapter lol.) anyway so here we have everyone flying, as all good heroes do, including Deku who doesn’t really need that floating quirk after all I suppose, since he can jump real good. BUT IT’S STILL NICE FOR HIM TO HAVE IT SO SHHH
also the flower!Kacchan eyes are becoming more and more frequent lately. Horikoshi is really having a lot of fun with that
and now we’re going back roughly two months ago! which is still the future as far as I’m concerned! so this is really weird to have a “flashback” that basically still takes place after where we last left off. but whatever
“a week after the ‘hospital’ tip” well thank you, that certainly does help. so Twice is jogging in and beckoning to his best bud Hawks so Hawks is like “?” and walking over
(ETA: this has absolutely nothing to do with anything, but I just wanted to say that it’s very possible this flashback is actually taking place on Shouto’s birthday -- January 11th -- given the timing, so happy birthday Shouto! you are getting so big!)
Tumblr media
lol see this is one of those times where the whole ‘translation of a translation’ thing doesn’t really work sob. even with context I’m not quite sure wtf Twice is actually asking, but at any rate this at least does give us an idea of how the rest of the League is spending their time now that they’ve completed their whole villain corporate merger
so Spinner and Compress, who actually have a few brain cells to rub together between the two of them, are already deeply involved in running things, and meanwhile Giran, Dabi, and Toga don’t really give a shit and so are content to sit back and wait until their services are actually needed. incidentally I like to think Giran spends a good chunk of his free time just tormenting ReDestro in a bunch of really small and petty ways. like making him get his coffee, and having him call and cancel his cable subscription and stuff. it’s just nice
guys I have no idea wtf is going on in these four panels honestly
Tumblr media
well you heard him. that’s the situation. nobody trusts Twice (or was he talking about Hawks?), and meanwhile he has to go poo. not exactly where I thought this chapter would be picking up after that fun little cliffhanger last week, but just goes to show this series truly is a magical Kinder Egg and you never know what you’re gonna get!
so Hawks is explaining for my benefit that Twice was apparently doing an impression of some guy named “Sanctum” who is the oldest member of the MLA
holy shit it took Hawks a whole month to figure out all of the Pliff members? I’m just gonna pass then. thankfully I’m not a spy and I don’t have the fate of the free world depending on me memorizing the organizational chart of a bunch of really boring people whom I really do not give the slightest fuck about. anyway godspeed Hawks
oh no
Tumblr media
son of a bitch. we’re in for another long fucking arc aren’t we lmao. well all right then let’s go ahead and do the rundown
Black 1: Fuhrer King Bradley
Black 2: Flying Ace
Black 3: Mother Ginger
Violet 1: Super Mario and Just A Bald Man
Violet 2: Predator and Best Sweaterist
Violet 3: Vizard and Gang Badger
in conclusion, Horikoshi will never stop making Alien/Predator references, and I’m also seeing some strong FMA and Bleach influence here as well. hell, the Mario guy even reminds me of some of the fishman characters from One Piece. so basically we’re all over the place here
other observations: “the new world movement”, huh? are they moving on from PLF at long last? Ill take Newm over Pliff any day tbh
and so they have a tactical force and a raid force. now that’s interesting as fuck, because who exactly are they planning to raid? now that’s a nice disturbing question to ponder
lastly, the black and violet color schemes are very interesting and I wonder if there’s any significance there that’s going over my head lol. for now I just think it sounds cool regardless
-- MOTHERFUCKER THERE’S A WHOLE NOTHER PAGE OF THIS SHIT FUCK ME I FUCKING QUIT
goddammit. fine
Tumblr media
Carmine 1: Lefty Hair and Gerudo Princess
Carmine 2: Slidin’ Go Away and R2-D2
and I can’t see Carmine 3, oh well. meanwhile on the other side we’ve got:
Cleveland 1: Praying Mantis and Righty Hair
Cleveland 2: Jawa and Just Happy To Be Here
and last but not least, Cleveland 3: Badger’s Revenge
what I have learned from this is that I don’t really know what a badger looks like and so any remotely rodent-looking animal person with stripes on their face is going to be slapped with that label because I don’t have time to research what would be a more appropriate animal nickname unless we want to be here until next week. anyway
haha Hawks what the fuck
Tumblr media
well that sure is encouraging. so how exactly are the heroes supposed to get the drop on them then? basically we’re fucked, is what you’re saying. well we all been knew so whatever
so Hawks is monologuing to himself about how he was able to nice his way into learning all of the army’s members without getting caught, and in the process he observed how all of the members are all “FUCK THE SYSTEM”, which they definitely have a point about but are also definitely going about the wrong way holy shit
so now he’s feeding some good rabble-rousing lines to Twice who is eating them up
Tumblr media
yeah, because Twice famously loves ReDestro lol, oh wait
so Twice is all “I don’t wanna say something that’s not from the heart” because he is PURE and not a Sneaky Sam like SOME PEOPLE! but he understands Hawks’s point that he basically just has to butter them up and tell them what they want to hear, and now he’s running off with a hearty thanks
fffffson of a --
Tumblr media
like, you all can see the breakdown in logic that occurred here, right? “some heroes are corrupt” -- absolutely! “kill all heroes” -- wait, what
like obviously there are some real world parallels here. but I very much get the feeling that the PLF/NWM’s movement is fueled less by sentiments of “our law enforcement system is trigger-happy, racist, void of empathy, and think they’re above the law” and more by the notion of “our self-proclaimed superiority gives us the right to do whatever we want and trumps other people’s right to be safe and free, particularly if those people are unfortunate enough to not have quirks.” like, there are a lot of other nuances we could get into here, but that’s basically the gist of it, so yeah. these guys are not to be sympathized with here
and now there’s a big double page spread basically confirming that what these guys really want is blood and anarchy
Tumblr media
and the really interesting thing here to me is that we can see Tomura standing at the front of the pack in that bottom right panel. but on the very next panel, with the close-up of Hawks looking as serious as we’ve ever seen him, he basically says that the endgame of all this, the ultimate outcome that this is all meant to bring into place, is one thing and one thing only
Tumblr media
yep. well fuck
anyway I have no idea why he’s thanking Twice, but I’m gonna go ahead and guess he unknowingly did something which might give the heroes the potential glimmer of hope which they desperately need. so I will go ahead and thank you too, Twice. you’re a good guy buddy
oh wow there’s a whole page of more meta about Twice! -- and OH SHITTTTTTT
Tumblr media
LKDsjflkjsdlfklskgjlskjlfkjsdlfk oh my fkfdjflk how did this never occur to me, just. FSDKLFLSIFKjk
hahaha. :’) holy fucking shit. they have to take him out. they can’t win otherwise. the heroes are already screwed enough as it is with just one Tomura and eleven high ends to contend with; if Twice is able to use his quirk to multiply that exponentially, we can basically kiss the world goodbye. fuck
but Hawks came to realize that Twice is actually a good guy though as echoed above! which, yeah, and can you imagine if he wasn’t, though? shiiit
oh my god they are so cute
Tumblr media
listen, I won’t lie, I’m reading this for my 1-A children first and foremost, so there’s a part of me that’s like “HOW MANY MORE PAGES ARE WE GOING TO GET OF THIS JESUS CHRIST.” but there’s no denying that Jin is a good turnip and his unexpected friendship with Hawks -- which I am happy to report is now confirmed to be genuine! because Hawks really does like him! -- is a delight to witness
OH MY GOD TWICE LMAO
Tumblr media
“HERE, LET ME JUST DRAW YOU A MAP! (⌒∇⌒。)ANYTHING FOR YOU, BEST FRIEND”
holy fucking shit Twice. did you just save all our asses you beautiful bastard
so between this, and the “hospital” clue, that could be enough to track him down, couldn’t it? no wonder Hawks was so pumped after getting that call. what are the odds this chapter ends with the start of a hero-led raid on a hospital in Kyoto. oh shit oh shit oh shit
lolol oh fuck me
Tumblr media
I swear to god Horikoshi if you end this bromance by having Hawks kill Twice for the sake of the greater good, I’ll. ... well I sure as hell won’t like that. please do not
AND JUST LIKE THAT WE’RE BACK TO SPRINGTIME OH MY GOD
Tumblr media
what a time to enter the first fucking grade Dai-kun. godspeed little man. I love the little detail that he’s holding an Endeavor plush while looking at the All Might statue. drawing strength from both heroes. aww
and then of course we have this fucking march of heroes which I can only hope is them heading to that hospital! no wonder they all vanished. they all ran off to Kyoto to try and put a stop to the villains’ plans before it’s too late
but I don’t see any of the kiddos there, though? don’t tell me the villains are gonna try something while the adults are away and leave the kids to deal with it all on their own
oh shit no!!! hold up!!
Tumblr media
DON’T TELL ME THEY REALLY DID BRING THE KIDS WITH THEM ON THE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS “TIME TO GET OUR ASSES HANDED TO US BY NOUMURAKI TOMURA” MISSION NOOO MY BABIESSS
oh thank god
Tumblr media
at least they don’t have the child soldiers on the front fucking lines, fucking christ
AHHHHHHHHH
Tumblr media
SAY A PRAYER FOR KATSUKI’S WINTER COSTUME, EVERYONE. BE AT PEACE, SLEEVES OF GONDOR. FAREWELL BEST JEANIST TRIBUTE COLLAR
is this T chest thing on Shouto’s costume new? I can’t imagine that serves any sort of practical function whatsoever; he was probably just tired of looking boring
BUT!!!! those gloves, though!!?! now those are definitely new and I fucking love them. again I can’t really see them having much of a practical application given his quirk, but there is nothing wrong with upgrading oneself just to look sharp! boy wanted a facelift so he went out and got one
that’s some nice Anime Protagonist Wind they’ve got going on there in the mountains of Kyoto. real epic shit
1-B is there too!! and also Hadou, I think, unless that’s Pony? so that’s fucking awesome. we will certainly need all hands on deck
so that’s it for the chapter! not much happened, but we got a lot of Twice appreciation and learned that the heroes still have a few tricks up their sleeves! can’t wait to see how this will all go disastrously wrong. if you ask me, it’s probably when they decided that the best way to launch a surprise attack was to have fifty Endeavor-led guys gather all together and march up Main Street. but far be it from me to tell the heroes how to do their job I guess. best of luck not dying everyone

Whenever You’re Ready
Tumblr media
Summary: Bucky lost the love of his life three years ago and he’s still trying to figure out how to deal with that. But that gets harder when he gets an unexpected visitor.
Warnings: Mentions of death, angst, so much angst, fluff, a whole lot of feelings y’all
Word Count: 6.2k
A/n: I had this thought and needed to write it
“I’m sorry, sir,” the officer said, “We have reason to believe that -”
Bucky stopped listening after the officer said ‘I’m sorry’. The words ‘I’m sorry’ were never followed by good news. Or even just neutral news, it’s almost exclusively followed by bad news. Especially when the ‘I’m sorry, sir’ comes from a doctor or a police officer.
But it didn’t matter that Bucky had stopped listening because he knew what they were about to say. They were going to tell him that they couldn’t find her body and that they were presuming her dead. But she couldn’t be dead. Y/n had promised that she wouldn’t die on him.
“We also lost his trail,” the officer finished.
“What?” Bucky’s head snapped up.
“He disappeared.”
* * *
Bucky sat up. The room was dark and silent. He glanced at the clock already knowing what time it was 1:35 am. The exact time that he was told that his fiance had been killed. No, not killed. Murdered.
It was the same dream, same memory, every year on the same day and he woke up at the exact same time. He was positive that no matter how many years passed it would be the same. He didn’t know if it would be worse if it was a happy memory that reminded him of what he was missing, or if he should be glad he was stuck with the worst night of his life.
The dream happened for months after and then it slowed to once a month until it only happened on the day.
He could roll over and try to fall back asleep but he knew that he wouldn’t be able to. He threw the covers off of him exposing his legs to the cool air of the room. He got up and made his way to the bathroom.
The water from the shower was as hot as it could possibly be. The hope was that it would get so hot it would burn away the pain, but nothing he tried was taking away the pain. The grief group he went to was just starting to make the pain a little less but -
Hours passed and the once nearly boiling water turned to ice against his back. All he wanted was to stay in the shower but he was meeting friends soon.
At 9:30 Bucky got into his car and drove to the cafe. Sam and Steve were waiting for him when he walked in. His friends decided that day when Bucky found out that he shouldn’t be alone on that day and so every year on that day, they would take the day off and spend all day together.
Sam was the first one to spot Bucky, he smiled and waved.
“You were almost late, Barnes,” Sam said calling Steve’s attention to the new arrival.
“Well,” Bucky said as he sat down in the empty chair at the table, “I don’t think I could be late anywhere.”
Sam and Steve chuckled slightly at this. They remember the countless fights that Y/n and Bucky got into about being late versus showing up at least five minutes early. Y/n won and now ever since Bucky’s been on time for everything.
“How are you doing, Buck?” Steve asked. Bucky shrugged. “Did you have the dream again?”
“Yeah,” Bucky whispered. “I pulled out one of her dresses the other day, it doesn’t smell like her anymore. And I’m having trouble remembering the last time I told her that I loved her. But the day I found out she was dead -” he laughed humorlessly, “that day I can remember perfectly. It’s really fucked up when you think about it.”
Sam began talking about one thing or another and the conversation started flowing easily. And for a while, Bucky’s heart didn’t feel as heavy as he knew it was but it was nice to feel lighter.
After their coffee, they all went to watch a movie that ended up being terrible. It was about a man who didn’t know the ‘real’ value of life until his wife left him and took the kids. Sam leaned over and whispered snarky comments in Bucky’s ear. Bucky only heard about half of them, the ones he did hear were rather funny.
But Bucky couldn’t help but think about how lucky this guy was that he got a second chance. That he was able to go back to his wife and tell him everything on his mind, and Bucky would give anything to have that chance.
* * *
After the movie, Bucky got into his car and when he looked into the rearview mirror he saw Y/n. He gasped and looked out the windshield and then back into the mirror but she was no longer there. He let out a sigh of relief.
“What’s your problem?”
Bucky’s head snapped to his passenger seat where Y/n sat. She was looking at him.
“What?” She asked with a cheeky smile.
He turned back toward the wheel of the car and started driving.
“Did I do something?” She asked clicking her seatbelt into place. “Are you mad at me? Is it because I said that Star Wars isn’t as revolutionary as Legally Blonde? Because I’m right I don’t know why you’re trying to fight it, I’m always right? Also, do you think Firefly might be overrated? Because I have a theory that if they had more seasons it would’ve been one of those shows that started out great but then just ended terribly.”
Bucky gripped the steering wheel as tightly as he could. His bottom lip was shaking and every breath felt like it might be his last. She continued to talk like this was an everyday occurrence. Like Bucky hadn’t been slowly dying from the inside out because the love of his life, his soulmate had left him to live in this world without her.
“Ok, baby blue,” the nickname made Bucky tear up, “what is up? Is this because of the Star Wars thing? Or have you changed your mind about marrying me?”
“Never,” he whispered. He glanced over at her half afraid that once he acknowledged her she would disappear. She was still there beaming at him with her wild eyes that sparkled and her hair pulled back in two french braids.
“Good, because I was thinking about some things that should happen for the wedding,” Y/n continued to talk wedding the rest of the way home.
At every turn, Bucky was sure that she would vanish but she didn’t, she just talked and didn’t mind that Bucky wasn’t saying much of anything (which wasn’t too different than when she was alive). He was just going to see this time as a gift. Live in this fantasy for the rest of the day because there was no way that this would continue after he fell asleep.
While Bucky was getting ready for bed Y/n sat in bed and watched him.
“Wow,” she said in her best Owen Wilson voice, “My fiance is hot as fuck.”
Bucky snickered and rolled his eyes. He climbed into bed, he laid on his stomach head faced towards the ghost of his dead fiancee.
“Goodnight gumdrop,” he muttered.
“Sleep tight, baby blue,” she whispered and Bucky could’ve sworn that he felt her kiss his forehead.
And for the first time in what felt like forever, Bucky Barnes fell asleep with a smile on his face.
* * *
The first thing that registered was a horn blaring past him. He blinked his eyes a few times trying to figure out what was happening. He was in his car stopped on the side of the road off of US 26. It was dark outside and he was on the portion of the highway that was surrounded by a forest.
He looked to his passenger seat but just like he suspected Y/n wasn’t there. The more concerning issue was; how did he get here? And why was it 2 am?
He chalked it up to sleepwalking and drove back home. He flopped back into bed instantly going back to sleep.
* * *
Bucky spent most of his day at work on autopilot, but that was no different than any other godforsaken day. Tony, his business partner, barged into his office an hour before quittin’ time.
“What do you want Stark?” Bucky asked not taking his eyes off the screen.
“I was thinking about something the other day,” Tony paced in front of Bucky’s desk, “I know we mostly work with veterans who are dealing with PTSD but we should set up a foundation that also helps with the spouses and the significant others of vets or people who died overseas.”
Bucky froze before actually looking at Tony. He didn’t say anything so Tony, being a babbler, started to babble.
“I mean we could open it up to everyone else that lost someone because I know that you had a tough time coming back to work, and it’s ridiculous that society puts a time limit on grieving. So I was thinking that we set those up. And before you ask yes I was a little apprehensive about bringing this up to you because I wasn’t sure how you would react -”
“I like it,” Bucky cut him off.
“Good, because I kind of already set the plan in motion.” Tony gave him a thumbs up and promptly left the office.
This wasn’t an unusual thing, Tony having an idea and setting it in motion before consulting with Bucky. Luckily over the years, Bucky had gotten good at retroactively putting things to a stop when needed.
Bucky really did like the idea of setting up another foundation that helped people with the grieving of a lost loved one and mentally kicked himself for not coming up with the idea himself.
* * *
Bucky had snagged a coveted seat on the light rail train that ran through the city. It wasn’t a subway because it wasn’t underground, which Bucky (and most of the people in the city) found ridiculous because that meant when it got too hot outside the train was only able to go so fast.
And being the end of July the annual heatwave was rolling into town. The AC on the train was only doing so much during rush hour and people were packed in tight.
Bucky was doing his very best to ignore the discomfort by reading a book, but the book was getting boring and had recycled the same plotline about three times now and he was only halfway through.
Just as he was closing the book the train came to an abrupt stop and someone fell into his lap.
She looked at him wide-eyed.
“Sorry,” she grimaced.
And it felt like the whole world froze. There was no one else in the world but them and she literally took his breath away with one word. He was certain he’d never seen anyone quite as beautiful as she, just as he was sure he would never find someone more beautiful.
“It’s ok,” he breathed. “I’m Bucky.”
She smiled at him and Bucky’s heart nearly burst out of his chest. “Y/n.”
“So,” he was very conscious of the fact that she hadn’t moved out of his lap, “do you make it a habit of falling into people’s laps?”
She narrowed her eyes at him. “Are you trying to flirt with me?”
“Is it working?”
She chuckled softly and got out of his lap. “If it was, how do you see this conversation ending?”
“Best case scenario?” He asked and she nodded. “Exchanging numbers and dinner plans.”
She pulled out her phone, quickly unlocked it, and handed it over to Bucky. “Let me apologize for literally falling into your lap.”
“There’s really no need to apologize,” he said as he took her phone and put his number in.
When he handed it back she typed something in then looked back at him. “This is my stop. I’ll see ya around Bucky.”
Bucky watched dumbstruck as she hopped off the train at the stop. A second after she disappeared into the crowd his phone buzzed. An unknown number had texted him a simple message: Y/n Y/l/n.
* * *
The next time Bucky saw Y/n was when he went to get after-work drinks with Tony, Steve, and Sam. It had been a month since the anniversary and the next day Tony and Bucky were launching their new foundation.
Steve was telling a story about a date he’d had recently and Tony and Sam were just taking the piss out of him for everything that he’d done wrong on the date.
Bucky looked up in the middle of the story and found Y/n standing next to the jukebox staring at the options. She turned her head towards him and smiled. He blinked and when he opened his eyes she was gone.
He didn’t see her again for the rest of the night.
But the next morning around 5 am, a full hour before he would get up to go to the gym, he woke up on the side of the road again. It was the same spot as the last time. As Bucky drove home he kept his eyes peeled for any hit and runs, he wasn’t sure what he would do if he ended up hitting someone with his car while he sleepwalked.
* * *
Her skin was soft beneath his fingers as he drew lines across her skin. She let out a sigh as she slept next to him soundly. Bucky had woken up with the sun on that particular Saturday and he knew for a fact that Y/n would be pissed if he woke her up.
So he laid there with her and watched her sleep. He pressed a soft kiss to her bare shoulder and she shifted so she now she was laying on her side with her nose nuzzled into her pillow.
“Y/n, are you awake?” He asked softly. He smiled when she didn’t answer. “You don’t know this yet, but I’m going to propose to you. I don’t know when or how but I have the ring. I think you’ll like it, and I hope you say yes. God, I have no idea what I’ll do if you say no. Please don’t say no.”
She continued to sleep soundly, breathing deeply. He brushed his thumb across her eyebrow. The only time she looked this at peace was when she was sleeping, or after Bucky had shown her what she did to him.
“I love you,” he whispered.
A few seconds later she groaned and made the same noise she always did when she woke up, a small whimper that her night’s sleep was over. She opened an eye and looked at him.
“Were you watching me sleep again?” She asked in a hoarse voice. Bucky h’mmed in response. “You fuckin’ creep.”
“Oh yeah, because I’ve never caught you watching me sleep,” he chuckled.
“Uhh, when I watch you sleep it’s to make sure that you’re still breathing. Some times you’re sleeping so deeply I’m afraid that you’re dead,” she argued fully awake now. “Please don’t die on me.”
Not caring that neither of them had brushed their teeth yet, he kissed her lips softly. “I won’t as long as you promise to wait until we’re both well into our 80s or 90s.”
“Deal, but I hope you know that when I do die, I’m going to come back and haunt your ass so you’ll never actually be able to get over me and date someone else. I’m selfish like that.”
“I don’t want anyone else,” Bucky admitted.
“Well, when you say things like that it makes me feel bad for finding Sam really attractive. I hope you know that if you break your promise, I’m definitely turning to him for comfort and then we’ll fall in love and have a million babies,” she teased.
“Oh, a million babies?”
“Oh yeah, one million babies, and they’d be so much cuter than any babies you and I would have.” She smiled smugly until Bucky poked her sides and started tickling her. She giggled. “No!”
“Take it back!”
But she didn’t she just kept laughing and swatting at his hands. After a minute or two, he stopped and kissed her again. He paused and looked at her, really looked at her in the morning sunlight that peaked through the drapes of their bedroom window. He leaned over to his nightstand and opened the drawer and dug around for something.
“What are you doing?” She sat up and leaned against the headboard. Bucky turned around holding a ring. It was simple enough, it was a white gold band with a blue sapphire with two smaller diamonds on either side of it but the gems on the ring were huge. “What are you doing?” She repeated.
“I have been waiting for the right time, the perfect time to do this but I realized that when doesn’t matter. The perfect time wouldn’t make a difference, what matters is the person. You might not be a perfect person but neither am I, but you are the perfect person for me. So Y/n, I’m breaking one of your rules and asking you a question before breakfast,” he extended his arm slightly so the ring was closer to her, “Will you marry me?”
Y/n gasped shakily as tears welled up in her eyes. “Yes, of course!”
Bucky took her left hand and slid the ring on her finger, thanking the heavens that it fit. He stared at the ring as it sat on her finger.
“Are you not going to kiss me or anything?” Y/n asked snapping Bucky out of his daze.
“Neither of us have brushed our teeth and your morning breath is so bad -”
“My mom just called, she says that I can’t marry you.”
Bucky shook his head at his fiancee. “Shut up,” he chuckled and kissed her.
* * *
One Saturday, early January, Bucky was eating his cereal staring at Y/n or her ghost or whatever she was.
“Can I help you?” She asked cocking her head to the side.
“Are you a ghost?” He asked.
“You already know what I am, Barnes,” she answered solemnly. “You’re just afraid of what it means if you’re right.”
“But if you’re a hallucination,” his voice broke as he spoke, “that means you’re not real.”
“If I was real then you wouldn’t be keeping the fact that you can see me a secret?” She leaned back in her chair.
“I could just have a fever,” he reasoned.
“You’ve been seeing me off and on for months. If your fever had lasted this long you’d probably be dead,” she propped her elbow on the table and rested her chin in her hand.
“So what’s wrong with me?” He asked, cereal long forgotten.
“I don’t know,” she shrugged then gasped. “Maybe I’m a vision from a god or some higher power. Here to tell you that you’re missing something.”
“But what would I be missing?” Tears began to fall down his face.
“Do you not miss me?”
“I miss you every goddamn day but there’s not much I can do about that.” There was a brief silence and Bucky found himself wishing that she was actually something he could touch, not an uncommon wish for him. “I should go see a doctor, shouldn’t I?”
Y/n gave him a sad smile and Bucky pulled out his phone.
* * *
Y/n was sitting on the couch with Bucky, her legs on his lap and he was going over something that Tony had sent him. Bucky was petting her legs.
“Why are you petting my legs like a dog?” She asked pulling one of her headphones out of her ear. “You know I’m not into pet play.”
Bucky stopped his movements and glared at her. “Must you make everything dirty?”
She grinned. “Yes.”
Bucky shook his head and put the stack of papers down on the coffee table. He crawled over so his head was on Y/n’s stomach without missing a beat she started running her fingers through his hair. He moaned at the feeling and closed his eyes.
“What are you listening to?” He asked his voice muffled but the fabric of her shirt and her tummy.
“The podcast My Favorite Murder,” she said. “If you just gave it a chance you might enjoy it.”
“Why are you so obsessed with true crime?”
“Well if I’m prepared for it then I have a better chance of surviving and listening to how fucked up people are, helps me learn what to do if I’m ever in that situation.”
He chuckled softly, he lifted his head and looked at her. “You realize the chances of you getting murdered are very slim right? Besides, I’ll protect you if that ever becomes a real possibility.”
“Yes,” she rolled her eyes, “You’re very strong and manly. Will you please just listen to this one story about people who live on an island and one of the couples shares a pair of stainless steel teeth?”
Bucky didn’t really have that much of an interest in true crime, but he’d be lying if he said that story didn’t sound interesting.
“Fine, but just that one story,” he said, “You’re not going to hook me on this.”
He lied, she got him hooked on that podcast and any time they came out with a new episode they either listened to it together or texted the other if they were apart.
* * *
Bucky was listening to the podcast that Y/n had gotten him hooked on. He was sitting in the waiting room for the doctor and Y/n was in the chair across from him watching him closely. He was doing his best to just listen to the podcast but her stare was making that hard.
“Barnes?” A nurse called.
Bucky sprung up from his seat and followed the nurse back into the exam room.
“Bucky Barnes,” the doctor greeted when she walked in.
“Dr. Cho,” Bucky greeted.
“What seems to be the problem?” She asked settling into the office chair in the room.
“I keep seeing my dead fiancee,” he said bluntly.
Dr. Cho pursed her lips and nodded her head. “Are you sleeping well?”
“Yeah,” he said completely forgetting about the sleepwalking he’s been doing.
“How long has it been going on?” She asked making a note in her chart.
“It’s off and on for a few months.”
“But not all the time?”
“No.”
Dr. Cho sighed. “Well, it might be a psychological thing if that’s the case the next plan of action would be to see a psychiatrist.”
“And another option?” Bucky asked though he already knew the answer.
“That you have some sort of brain tumor,” she answered and Bucky’s entire body sagged, “So I will schedule you for an MRI, but I would also like fo you to talk to someone.”
Bucky nodded silently agreeing with her.
After he got home that day he looked into some highly rated therapists and when he talked to his friends about it they all had suggestions for him.
* * *
The hauntingly familiar sound of a horn blaring startled Bucky awake again. He was sitting in his car that was idling with the radio playing quietly. The clock in his car told him it was 4 am. When he looked around he noticed that it was the same part of 26 that it usually was.
He really needed to find a way to stop himself from sleep-driving.
* * *
The room was eerily quiet. Bucky picked at his jeans pretending to rid them of pieces of fluff that didn’t exist. He’d been sitting in this room for almost half an hour silently, other than the initial hellos.
“You won’t know if this works until you talk to me and we are able to start a discussion,” Maria Hill, his new therapist told him.
“I know, I just don’t know where to start,” he said.
“Start from the beginning.”
So he did. He told her the story of how he met Y/n and falling in love with her and then proposing. He only wavered a bit when it came to the birthday party he’d planned for you.
* * *
“Are you sure you sent her the right time?” Natasha asked.
“Yes,” Bucky answered.
Natasha had asked that question about five times and it didn’t matter that Bucky had shown her the text that said he’d told Y/n to meet him at the restaurant at 6:30. Nor did it matter that Y/n had texted at 5 saying ‘hey love, I’m going to be a little late the meeting is running long and I still have to talk to some people afterward.’
No, none of that mattered to Natasha who was nervous that Y/n would hate the surprise.
Bucky had set up a dinner for Y/n’s birthday. She thought it was just going to be her and him but Bucky had also invited all their friends because Y/n had started complaining that they didn’t all hang out together anymore.
Natasha was th only one who was worried for the first ten minutes of Y/n not showing up. After that everyone started to get more and more concerned about her unusual tardiness. Until they all decided to call the cops.
* * *
“They didn’t believe us at first,” Bucky told Maria. “They said that we had to wait 48 hours before we could officially file a missing person’s report. But we knew. It didn’t matter to them that Y/n was never late and if she was she would’ve called or texted. They thought she was running from me.”
Maria was quiet as Bucky took a tissue to blow his nose.
“They never found her body either, isn’t that just a kick in the nuts?” Bucky laughed sardonically. “And the last thing I told her to her face was ‘just so you know you lost the game’ which might be the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard.”
Maria gave him a confused look. “The game?”
“It’s this thing where once you start playing the game you can never stop and the way to win the game is by not thinking about it but once you think about it you’ve lost the game,” Bucky explained.
“That’s counter-intuitive.”
“That’s the game.” Bucky shrugged. “I’ve also been seeing her.”
“Natasha?”
“No, Y/n. Not all the time but sometimes. We talk and I know it’s crazy but I like being able to talk to her again.” Bucky bounced his leg as he thought for a moment. “I’ve also been sleepwalking. More like driving.”
“What?” Maria looked shocked.
“Not all the time, but sometimes I’ll wake up to find myself in my car stopped on the side of the road. It’s the same spot every time, I never hit anyone or anything as far as I can tell.”
“Well, there are ways to get around sleepwalking maybe have a friend spend the night to stop you from getting into your car, set up an alarm system, I can send you a list of what some of my other clients have found helpful.”
* * *
A week after his therapy appointment Bucky was in the hospital for his MRI.
It wasn’t until he was in the machine when he heard her voice.
“I hope you still have that amazing insurance because MRIs are not cheap,” she said and Bucky held back the urge to roll his eyes, “Are you ignoring me because you don’t want to look crazy in front of the doctors? Because you know that they know why you’re here right? They already know you’re crazy.”
As Bucky lay there for the rest of the scan Y/n sang a song that had been stuck in Bucky’s head for the past week. When he came out of the machine she was standing there in the corner of the room. He didn’t say anything but he made eye contact with her.
“You’re still missing it,” she said. He furrowed his brows at her. “Bucky you’re missing it.”
An hour later Bucky was sitting in front of a neuro doctor.
“There’s nothing showing up on the MRI,” Dr. Banner told him, “Medically? You are fine, Mr. Barnes.”
“Thank you, doctor.”
* * *
It happened again. He woke up on the side of the road in his idling car. But this time the sun was just beginning to rise. Bucky slammed his hands against the steering wheel before turning his car around to head back home.
He was about halfway home when something realized something. It was what Y/n had told him about missing something.
Every time he’d woken up on the side of the road it was after he’d seen Y/n. That’s the only time he’d sleepwalked was the night after all of the hallucinations. Which made him wonder, why that particular spot?
He could’ve gone home and just ignored his thought for the rest of the day but that might actually kill him.
He flipped a u-y and drove back to the spot. He pulled over on the shoulder. When he got out of the car he took a few deep breaths.
Not really knowing what he was going to find or if he was going to find anything be began walking through the forest.
“This is the part of the horror movie where I die because I’m walking through a forest because a hallucination told me to. If Y/n could see you now she’d kill you for being stupid. Also if you get murdered they are definitely going to make fun of you on all the podcasts for being a complete idiot,” he mumbled to himself as he stumbled through the foliage and brush of the forest floor.
He walked for about a mile or two before he came across a small cabin in the middle of nowhere.
“What the hell?” He whispered to himself.
Then someone from inside the cabin let out an ear-piercing scream. Bucky finally had a logical thought and pulled out his phone to call 911. They told him to stay on the phone with him and they were sending units to him.
The screaming had stopped and Bucky almost went into the cabin. It was only a few minutes later when he heard the sirens and the officers came and two pairs walked over to the cabin and went in. Bucky was standing next to an officer who was told to wait with him.
There was a gunshot, not long after one of the officers made a call over the radio for an ambulance because there was a girl in the cabin who needed medical attention.
The officer that hung around with Bucky took his statement as they waited for the ambulance. Giving the statement to the officer was a blur and he tried to find a way to tell the officer that visions of Y/n had led him here without actually telling him that.
When the EMTs made it through the forest the ‘girl’ was escorted out of the cabin and Bucky’s heart dropped. There was a woman walking with the officer who looked so much like Y/n but her hair was unkempt and looked like she hadn’t eaten in years.
But then her eyes met his.
“James?”
“Y/n?” He asked and his voice broke. Bucky didn’t wait for her to answer again as he ran over to her, how he managed not to trip over anything was a mystery to him. He stopped right in front of her. “Is that really you?”
Y/n let go of the officer and lifted her hands to his cheeks. She gently touched his face and he leaned into her touch. He was almost sure that at any moment he was going to wake up from this dream to an empty bed.
“You found me,” Y/n whispered before collapsing into Bucky’s arms.
* * *
Bucky sat next to her hospital bed and watched her. He was afraid that she would disappear. But he could touch her, he could feel her again. But he wouldn’t. Not until she made the first move, he wouldn’t make her do anything she didn’t want to do, he didn’t even know what’d happened in there.
The detectives that had come around informed him that any number of things could’ve happened during those three years and she would be a very different person now. That she would need countless hours of counseling.
Y/n had been unconscious since she fainted outside the cabin. Bucky knew he should call everyone, tell them that Y/n was alive, but he also knew that they would all want to come and see her so he settled for the two people who needed to know. Tony, because there was no way in hell Bucky was going into work today or anytime this week. And Natasha, because Nat would kick his ass if he kept this from him.
Everyone else could wait until Y/n woke up and was ready for visitors.
* * *
Natasha had come in an hour after Bucky called and cried into his shoulder. She’d stayed for a while before Bucky told her to go home and that he would call her the instant Y/n woke up. Natasha had been reluctant at first but agreed because it didn’t look like Y/n was going to wake up anytime soon.
Which wasn’t true because an hour after Natasha left Y/n’s eyes fluttered open. She looked over to find Bucky wide awake watching her sleep.
Y/n gave him the smallest of smiles that somehow still took his breath away.
“You were watching me sleep,” she croaked.
“I thought you were dead -” he stared and had an apology on the tip of his tongue but she cut him off.
“Don’t apologize for not looking for me,” she ordered.
“But -”
“No,” she said firmly. “You were working with what you had.”
“How ok are you? Scale from one to ten.”
“If one is I’m dead, I’m gonna go with a one-point-five.” A tear fell from her eye and Bucky wanted nothing more than to wipe it away. Her lip began to tremble. “Um, he uhh -”
“You don’t have to tell me,” Bucky cut her off. “Not yet.”
There was a silence that Bucky didn’t know if he should fill or not. He knew what he wanted to tell her, but he wasn’t sure if he should if it would be what she wanted to hear.
“I’ll understand if you don’t want me anymore,” she told him. “I know that three years isn’t really a long time but if you don’t -”
“You can’t get rid of me that easy, gumdrop,” he told her and a sob escaped her lips. “I’d go get you another ring tonight. I meant what I said when I told you that you are the perfect person for me. And I still want to spend the rest of my life with you.”
“But baby blue, I’ve changed. I’m not the same person I was. I’ve done things -”
“Y/n, neither of us are the same person we were three years ago. And whatever you did, kept you alive,” he said, he could feel the tears welling up in his eyes. “So yeah, we have some stuff to work out but my heart belongs to you and you alone. And I’m not giving up on you.”
Y/n reached out her hand for Bucky and he took it. Her frail hands wrapped around his one, they were cold. He could only imagine the rest of her body was just as cold.
“You still wanna marry me?” She asked softly.
“Do you still want to marry me?” He pulled over a chair not removing his hand from hers and sat down.
She nodded. “But I’m not ready to. Does that make sense? Like, I wanna be ready.”
“I would wait forever for you,” he told her.
“So you lied,” she sighed and he furrowed his brows at her. “Clearly, you couldn’t have changed that much you’re still the cheesiest person on the face of the planet.”
Bucky scoffed and pressed a gentle kiss to her hand. “Promise me you’ll let me know if you don’t want me to do something. Like if I touch you in a way you don’t like, you have to let me know. I never want to be the reason you’re in pain.”
“Ok,” she whispered. “Where’s everyone else?”
“I only called Natasha and Tony today because I wasn’t sure how you would react to a room full of people wanting to see you. I can call them if you want and get them here.”
“Not yet, I haven’t seen you in three years,” she played with his fingers. She hadn’t let him go as if she had been touch starved for so long.
“Ok, whenever you’re ready.”
And yes they had things that they would have to work out together and individually, but Bucky meant it when he said that he wasn’t going to give up on her.

More about my OCs
Before I really put first anythings on here, maybe I should mention more about my two OCs.
(I will add pics of 'em)
_______________________
Tani :
Tani's story changes depending on which version I'm telling, I've had her for a long time so it kept changing, but it can all ultimately be told the same.
She was the only one in the family who seemed to really have a passion for the arts in the family. Mainly music.
She's the youngest in the family of 5 kids, but it was obvious from an early age that the man she called father wasn't biologically related to her.
She got most of her mothers features, but her skin tone was darker then her siblings, she had dots of light freckles on her face and her nose was more down turned then theirs.
The story follows a bit the same from there.
She had a rocky relationship with her two older siblings, her mom atleast kept her alive and educated, but her father mostly acted like she didn't even exist. Her Aunt Lexi was the one that practically raised her. She had a pretty good bond with Gogo, she taught her how to fight, but her go to sibling was her middle brother, Gom (or Luke as he preferd). They'd do everything together! He taught her how to swim, he knew her favorite fruits and how she liked her sandwich, she'd do silly dances when mom or dad made him upset or sing song they'd make up togehter, he'd protect her from their father's temper or their mother's cruel words. He was her best friend.
She misses him.
The story splits from there with the versions.
_
In my first version (BH6) she grows up in San Fransokyo. She already knows the gang through Gogo, mostly because they had to babysit her sometimes, and meets Hiro in High School. They were both the youngest students in the whole school, but really became friends when she realized this small noodle of a nerd was being picked on by the bigger, tougher kids, and she didn't find that fair or nice. She started defending him from anyone who wanted to cause harm, gaining her a reputation, and he defended her from any authority figure that would get her in trouble, always getting them out of hot water when possible.
They decided from then on to always have each others backs, no matter what and became partners in crime.
Then the fire happened, and that's where the story continues.
_
In my second version (BH6: TS) her Aunt legally takes her away from her parents at the age of 5 after seeing how bad her home life was, taking her to New York to live with her in Manhattan where she tries to give her the best life possible.
She still graduates High School at a young age (12) and was immediately send to Baruch College.
She didn't connect to anyone there, but spend most of her time studying or hanging out with her childhood friend Joécy and their High School crew.
She spends a year at Baruch before her Aunt transfers her to San Fransokyo to go to SFIT, where she takes a test (and shows off some of her inventions) to earn the right to finish her three years instead of going all four again. (This is before season 2, maybe closer to 3/4 of season 1).
There she meets Karmi, an odd character (to her) who Granville introduced and asked to show Tani around, much like what she wanted for Hiro, but the other way around.
Tani shuts down any of Karmi's threats (kind off the same she gives Hiro) and words, telling her to leave her alone and that "I just wanna get this day over with, aight?"
She quickly warms up to Karmi though on their little tour and eventually meets Hiro and his friends, recognizing her sister amongst them and trying her damn hardest to avoid her, but Karmi insists she meets them for some reason.
She finds out more about San Fran and all the weird things happening around the city, growing suspicious about this "Super Hero Team" in town, that's where the story continues.

Acordé :
Acordé doesn't have a lot of versions for his story because he's newer, but the one I'm gonna tell will be the official one.
From the day he was born it was like his life was planned out for him, which is because it kind of was.
His parents wanted to make sure that he got the best life could offer: he went to every best school: pre-school, kindergarden, grade school, high school etc. money could get, and he always made sure it was worth it. They put him in the best sports, the best hobbies, the best crowds, the "best" friends.
Whatever would help him succeed in life they got him or put him in.
He loves his family and is loved by them right back, but that love comes with the fear of never wanting to disappoint them.
He's an only child but was always sent to babysit his younger cousins, mostly Wasabi, even if he was only three years older then him. They're best friends and Acordé was always the one patient enough to take care of him.
Acordé came from a history of hard workers, who fought for what they had and became a really wealthy family (think Fred like wealthy) where his father, mr. Ramon Johnson, CEO of Tech&Rep and a popular clothing company, still had old beliefs and really high standards, wanting his son to succeed in life and take over the family bussiness. Though a very strong and respectable man, he still had alot to learn about emotional stability. Ace's mother, mrs. Audra Beatrice Javos Johnson, Social Adviser and G.P.M., is a calm, humble woman. Lovely and loving, she cares for her son more then anything in the world, wanting him to find love and happiness, and though she's a very sweet woman, she becomes as fierce as a Lioness if anything was to happen the her family, especailly her son.
Though his father wanted him in the family bussiness, Acordé always dreamed of becoming the best laywer San Fransokyo has every seen, studying law day and night and learning all about the best colleges and universities he could go to after he gratuated.
Acordé had a significant other: Kim Rashima.
Kim was his bad experience at a relationship. She was manipulative, loud, spoiled absolutely rotten, and acted like she was above and better then everything and everyone, even him sometimes.
Her family and his knew each other for a long time and are pretty damn wealthy, so it was always the plan that they would marry when they were older.
They started off sweet with each other at first, but then she started to change for the worst.
He really tried, for his parents sake, to love her, doing mostly what they and she wanted him to do, but it ultimatly ended in them breaking up when they were 19 after he caught her cheating.
He gave her another chance even then, but she decided he wasn't worth the trouble. Their parents (mainly their fathers) tried getting them back together even then, to no avail.
He has a lot, and for that he's grateful, but he can't really say he's happy. He knows he should be, but he can't. Not yet atleast.
When he meets Tadashi (this is way after the fire) however, it's like a breath of fresh air, and that's where the story continues.

Dreaming of You ♡♡ Joel Pimentel
A/n: I haven’t written anything that hasn’t been school related, so I might be a little rusty. Tell me if I should continue writing and what can I do to improve.
Disclaimer: This story deals with cancer, and I’m not making fun of it in any shape or form. In fact, this was a dream I had (although it wasn’t exactly like this) when my doctors suspected I had cancer.
Warnings: Angst, sadness, some cursing, death, and very little fluff
☾☾☾☾☾☾☾☾☾☾☽☽☽☽☽☽☽☽☽☽☽☽
It was late at night, no one was awake except for you. The beeping of the heart monitor kept you awake. ‘At least it’s still beeping’ you thought to yourself. Your biggest fear was hearing it stop. That would mean you lost. You lost the battle. But you can’t. Not just yet. Not until you finished what you had to do.
You looked at the window, seeing the stars and the moon. They were always there. Just like the love you held for Joel. Constant as the stars above. You wondered if he was staring at the stars as well, or was he dreaming of you just as much as you dreamed of him.
Whenever Joel appeared in your thoughts, a smile would blossom in your face. You remember his first ‘I love you’ and the joy that came when you said it back.
You were practicing in the mirror “Joel… I… um… I can’t! Why can’t I tell him that I love him. I know that my heart loves him, but the words just won’t come out.” You hated yourself for not being able to say three simple words. Everyone else said them like how one says hello.
Maybe it was because your ‘I love you’s have a huge meaning to you. You didn’t give them out freely. They held a big significance to you. Those three words could open up a cold heart, and you didn’t know if you were ready for that risk yet.
Before you could keep degrading yourself for not being able to say ‘I love you’ to the person you loved, there was a knock on your door. You took a second to see if you looked decent, and went to go open the door. And there he was.
He was your dream come true. “Hey, beautiful!” He said as he kissed your cheek. A blush painted your face in a beautiful rosey color.
“Hi, Joel!” You greeted him. With that you two got in the car. You two had been dating for a year, and he felt it right for you to meet his family. “I’m really nervous. I really want to impress your family.”
“You will! Don’t worry.” He reassured you as he grabbed your hand. They fit perfectly. Giving you another reason to love him even more. He was your missing puzzle piece.
Once you got there, you were introduced to everyone. They accepted you right away. They could see the love that you two shared.
When Joel saw you playing with his cousins, his heart filled with love. It was now or never. He walked up to you and hugged you from behind, “I love you, you know that right?”
Without even thinking twice, “Of course I do. I love you too!” Once you realized the words fell from your lips, you smiled. You had won the battle.
“I love you, too” You said softly. He was your first ‘I love you’, and you treasured it. He would always have your heart. He won your heart, because he was always there for you. In the good times and bad times.
You and Joel had decided to spend Christmas together. Before you two left for the party, you both wanted to give each other your gifts. “Open mine first!” You told him. He opened it and inside was a jacket he had always wanted.
“I love it! Thank you!” He hugged you. “Open mine now.” You opened his gift and inside held a ring. “It’s a promise ring.” Your face fell when he said that. “You don’t like it?” He asked you.
“No, it’s beautiful.” You said and you started crying. You faced away from him and kept crying.
“It just means we promise to be there for each other. We promise that we will always love one another. We promise to be together. I know you love me and I know that I love you-” He was going to keep going, but you interrupted him.
“Joel, listen to me, I have cancer.” You told him. You wanted to avoid this topic for as long as possible, but you couldn’t when he started talking about being together forever.
“What? When did you find out?” He asked you. Finally, some things started to make sense. He wondered why you always seemed so tired, were always bruised somewhere, and why you weren’t so cheery as you used to be.
It pained your heart to tell him, “I knew about it a few months ago.” His face fell.
“A few months ago? And you are now just telling me? Why didn’t you tell me sooner?” He asked you, wiping the tears that slowly fell from your face.
“Because you would’ve been worrying about it. And I don’t need you to worry.” You told him.
“You don’t need me.” As soon as those words were said, you shook your head so fast.
“No, Joel! I needed you. I need you. More than ever.” You said while hugging him super hard. You started worrying when you didn’t feel his arms wrap around you.
He slowly pushed you off of him and your heart broke. “When do your treatment start?” He asked you.
“Next week-”
“I’m going with you!” He told you. You had been enduring all of this without him, and he wouldn’t let that happen again.
“You can’t, Joel! You need to stay here. The guys need you. Your fans need you. You still need to keep writing music. Just because my life might be ending, doesn’t mean yours is.” Even though you wanted him to be with you every second of the day. He still has his own life to worry about.
“Don’t say that! Don’t ever say that! You are not going to die!” The tone in his voice scared you. “Promise me you’ll be with me forever. Promise me.” He pleaded you.
“I… I promise.”
That’s a promise you knew you would have to alter. The treatment wasn’t working, and you really wanted to tell Joel. Yet, he seemed so happy on tour. You couldn’t tell him. You needed him happy. His happiness was your happiness.
Before you realized, it was morning. “Y/n, are you ready?” They asked you. You nodded. “Like we said, we promise to have this done as soon as possible.”
As soon as you went back to your room, your phone started ringing. “Hey princess! How are you doing?” He asked you through the phone. You tried holding in the tears.
“I’m doing okay, I miss you!” You told him. You weren’t necessarily lying to him. You were feeling okay, now that you heard his voice.
“Well, you won’t for long! I’m going to visit you tomorrow!” He told you. You two spent the whole day talking to each other. “Bye my love! I’ll be dreaming of you. Til’ tomorrow I’ll be holding you tight!” He told you. You said your goodbyes.
“Miss L/n, here you go.” They handed you the CD. You slipped in the paper that hold everything your heart wanted to tell Joel. With that you closed your eyes, and fell asleep. Dreaming of him forever.
Joel entered the hospital with a bouquet of flowers, when he saw your family crying. His heart fell. ‘No! No, it can’t be!’ Your family saw him and went up to him.
“She wanted you to have this.” He saw that it was a CD. He wanted to know what was in there, but he couldn’t bare to hear your voice. “I know you probably won’t want to listen to it, but the nurses said she spent weeks on it. Promise you will.” Your mother pleaded him. He nodded his head.
He was at his car, crying. “Why did you fucking die! You promised me! You fucking promised me we would be together! You lied! You left me here! You obviously didn’t love me, because you left me!” He screamed, letting all his feelings out.
He then saw the CD on the passenger seat. Half of him wanted to crush it into little pieces, but the other part of him wanted to hear what you spent weeks on working.
He opened it and pulled out the letter that was there. It said;
Hey, mi amor! If you’re reading this, I lost the battle. Or that’s what most would think. In my heart, though, I know I won. I met you, fell in love with you, and shared the remaining part of my life with you. You were my dream come true, and I can honestly say that I’ll forever dream of you. With that in mind, I wrote and sang this song for you. I spent months on it. Although cancer took most of my life, it never got to my heart. My heart was protected by your love. I know I promised you I would be with you forever, with this song, now I will be. I love you so much- Y/n
He put in the CD, and as he heard your voice again, he cried. The song ended with you telling him how much you loved him, you recounting your first ‘I love you’s, and all of your favorite memories you two shared. And that’s when he knew, that you had always dreamed of him.

COVID Diaries; Pennies
It is March 2020 and I’ve channeled the spirit of Paul Revere. As Los Angeles erupts into rioting and mass fentanyl suicide, I dive headfirst into the cabin of the Mazda, and gun the packed ship upwards along the vacant I5 corridor. Every smouldering city under Gavin Newsom looks further gone than the last. The navigation takes me on some perverse fantasy detour thru post-apocalyptic San Francisco. It’s been a long time coming but now it’s solidified. The mayor and her delegates have chomped their cyanide pills and now the streets and bridges offer rotting cars beside silent, beautiful Victorian manors. Still in full color, the sky is blue and the sun is yellow, gleaming indifferently. I am nervous about San Franscisco County. The shelter in place order says no one shall be out on the street without proper reason. And, proper reason or not, I have a pharmacy of drugs in the trunk of my car. Will it be enough to wait out the pandemic in my mother’s house? Enough to keep me sane tucked in the basement of the compound on Cougar Mountain, Issaquah, Washington, for GodKnowsHowLong? My very own Bavarian Alps.
For years in LA I have lived for high speed and hard sex in a blackout frenzy which no young American could denigrate without looking like a nerd. In our culture of excess I sought the most insane, unexplored corridors. Chavionistic romps through the bitter forests of lust, contamination, too-young suicide, too-good blowjobs that leave explosions on this cast of characters flown from every corner of the globe, all with the same indelible fever. I come to now, in this chaotic month handed down by God, March 2020, and I’m withdrawing from all of it in the penthouse on the side of the mountain.
In this moment the fantasy is fading fast, like being jolted from a wet dream by a home invasion. For a lot of people the American dream was already a flickering ember in the distance, a relic of some stupid pilgrimgrage for egoic glory, a blind propaganda puzzle piece with no jigsaw to belong to. But I had formed my own relationship with the concept, and, until now, had believed wholeheartedly in the myth in America; or at least that myth’s capacity to spur significant action, which could abolish hunger and pain, mistreatment and misunderstanding, which could deliver us from evil and unto the kingdom of heaven.
I am not, to many of her 300 million pairs of eyes, a portrait of traditional American success. I am the starving artist archetype. I’ve lived in abandoned buildings and shot cocaine into my veins in the speeding bathroom of many an Amtrak carriage. These may be my most definitive traits, save for the music I somehow manage to draw out of all of this. Albums worth of potential answers to the impossible questions. Sometimes I think I’ve reached the peak, with the LSD and the naked festival girls. I am 26 years old and feel incompetent. I go to pay a traffic ticket or am electric bill and find myself paralyzed at the entrance to the website. In a moment of otherworldly strength I call the bank and my debit card has been cancelled. I stare at the parking ticket in my pod, which has been rented from a company called Up(Start), and is arranged in a row with twenty others. At least I’ve made it to Los Angeles.
Up(Start) is a strange place. I find most people don’t last very long in this community. They leave back to their hometowns or find apartments. The ones who stay haunt this place like ghosts, with no discernible goals and mysterious incomes. I’ve learned not to ask how these life-longers pay the rent. The answer is not translatable.
Willow is one of these life-longers. She always talks about moving out; sometimes to an apartment in LA, most recently about some nebulous palace in France. She says her grandmother died and left her everything. She shows me a suitcase full of watches and rings that still can’t fully convince me of her story. She drinks vodka when she wakes up and convinces me to fuck her when Jesse leaves us in his room alone.
Jesse found his way out to a beautiful house in Silver Lake. He had been at Up(Start) for a year before that. He is the nicest guy I know, offering the coat off his back for nothing but a swig of your vodka in return.
I left these characters behind, keeping a steady 65 on the interstate and stopping only to black out in a hotel room in Redding, CA. Summer, inspirational barista and blowjob queen, dared me to stop and see her in Portland, but my body was crawling from scabies from Lucy, (who was also in Portland and, I would later learn, infected with the virus) and I sped right through.
My younger brother Jon was at the house and had been awaiting my arrival. I instantly understood why. My mother had become a figurehead for the national panic, and shoulder-hugged me with her mask on. She is, as we speak, sterilizing the place.
I’ve gotten to spend a good amount of time with Jon, and am somewhat surprised to find that he faces the same existential torment as I do. This is not something we talk about, but I can feel it on him. He is super into Xanax, and orders pressed bars off the darknet. I share the drugs I’ve brought with him. Kratom, weed, and, —most enticing— Flubromazolam. I learn that he has been kicked out of UW on academic probation. I ask him about it in front of my mother and stepdad. With a casualness that shocks me he says he just didn’t care about any of his classes. But he’s got reaccepted to the school and he says he’s going to make it this time.
I show him how I order my drugs online. I show him the designer benzodiazepines on the clearnet, pennies per dose. We place an order for O-DSMT. It’s an insane solution to our problems, but I guarantee you it works.
I tell Jon about my life in LA with the stuff. Taking it and driving weed deliveries all day. I don’t tell him about the long nights with Lucy, telling her the love I feel from the opiate is sourced from her, then failing to get hard.
Jon, for his part, tells me about the peak of his Oxycontin habit, poppin 7 OC30’s a day with his buddies at Rolling Loud. I was just a few blocks away. I didn’t know he was in town.
We order the O-DSMT to his apartment in the U District, stopping to and snag it on our sole vacation to Dad’s for dinner. Two packages have been delivered. We have the save pavlov response. We carry the packages to his apartment on the top floor and split the bubble wrap with a butterfly knife. Out of a manilla envelope comes 100 green Xanax bars. From a bent UPS envelope comes a gram of O-DSMT and 250mg of 4-ACO-DMT, a bonus for me (Jon says he hates psychedelics).
We set to the scale and split the gram, dosing 50mg then and there to get through dinner. The next day he visits me in the basement, saying “Yo, this O-DSMT shit… it’s dope.”
I say “I’m with you.”
My days are spent deep in the dream flow, recording songs for a hopeful fourth album. The third one is still far from complete, but I can’t go back and meddle with those songs now. Wouldn’t dare touch their Los Angeles essence with the hand of the evergreen state. They will go to Rob and Twon and Andy as they are.
I’m back to guitars for the new album. Cardinal sin AC/DC type songs. I think it may be a double album, quarantine permitting. I want an exploratory, unstructured, throw paint at the wall and see what sticks, White album/Life of Pablo situation. I want solo piano pieces and Aphex Twin-esque 808 excursions. I want the label to release it on white vinyl with extensive liner notes. Indulgence. I want this album to be the one where I say “indulge me.”
If Rob is vehimently opposed to the idea I had the fantasy of making an easy album. Taking songs like Parade Owl, See You Tomorrow, Miss Can’t Sleep and putting out a whole album of them. Good rock music. Take a step back from the frontlines; the cutting edge. We’ll see what sticks to the wall after this quarantine is over.
Weeks drift by. There’s a trade route for all the beer that gets brought into the house. It goes from the garage fridge to the basement fridge to my eager hand, to my mouth, to my blood. Night by night the ritual recurs, til my mom takes out the downstairs trash and finds all the empties. She makes some subtle comment. I tell her to buy more White Claw.
Despite the drug flow my inspiration seems to be drying up. Rob took a listen to the twenty five songs I’d completed since arriving in Issaquah and said they sounded like Dogs. The old band. The old rock and roll band we’ve been trying to move away from. I was disappointed to hear him say it. I was disappointed he wasn’t excited about the songs. “Fuck it, should I scrap them all?” I asked myself. Then I started to look around the house and understand that if nothing came of these songs… I must be insane. I must be losing it. The stupid research chemical stimulants don’t help. I thought they would. Productivity and all… but I’m just jittery, texting strangers on Instagram for hours, all the while feeling like I should be doing something else. And the television is on in the background, and I told myself I was going to do so much to day. And I did it. And people on Instagram say “you seem busy.” They’ve always said I seem this and I seem that. I never agreed with any of it, but they probably know me better than I do. How could I see myself? I look for myself through a fog and it’s only a ripple of a shadow. A microcosm a million miles away through a hellscape with no up or down, no east or west. They say I’m social. They say I’m a socialite. Really I just get drunk and unleash all my nervous energy on the party or, nowadays, the Zoom meeting.
Today I drink Modello. Ma and Chuck went to the Seattle waterfront for a picnic or something. I didn’t get the details. But the sun should be going down now, and she’s texting me asking if I want to play a board game when they get back. I say yeah sure I do. My temper when I’m off these amphetamines analogues, though… I worry I’ll flip the Pictionary board. Slam dunk the wine glass onto the wood floor. Now the cliffhanger; will this Modello calm my nerves?
This morning I went with mom to buy plants for the garden. I thought we were going to get seeds but she wanted the already grown ones. She was ready to be angry. Nothing made her happy. We went to three different garden store. I think she got some tomatos. How the hell am I going to get out of this one? Feels like the walls are closing in. I feel like I’m in the freezer in the back of McDonalds. I feel so sad for her, but I also feel so sad for myself. I feel cut off. I feel short of breath. I feel terror. It is Friday, April 17, 2020. Dread, terror, paranoia… I’m sure it’s been felt a million times by a million people, but here’s my version of it. In this McMansion on the side of the mountain, feeling less like I have a mission than ever. Calling nobody. Freezing. Yeah I’m freezing.
My brother and I both have drugs to get through this crisis but I’m planning to get off them. I sold him half of my etizolam and half of another shipment of O-DSMT the other day. He wasn’t at all interested in the 2-FDCK, an analogue of the dissociative Ketamine. I am still not really sure what dissociatives do to consciousness. They can move you into states profound darkness. You feel like your life is a black and white film and it is raining outside. And it drips off the palm trees and you sit in traffic on the way back from the Boy’s and Girl’s Club, where the boys and girls wouldn’t listen, they’d just go off into their own worlds. I wonder how they’re all doing now, tucked into their parents houses in Calabasas.
Anyway, I said to Jon “I’m getting off the stuff.” And I intended to. This journal finds me at a crossroads between fantasy and reality. What is my life going to be for? Where do I cast this fishing pole? Well the pole’s been cast. It’s out there in the middle of the ocean. But at the same time it’s in my hand, in this very moment, and I can chose where to dip it. I’m not trying to catch a fish in this scenario, I just like the serenity of the bay.
The question on everyone’s mind is: “If not drugs, then what!?” That’s a great question and I’d be bullshitting if I said I could answer it. I don’t know what lies on the other side of this life. I want to find out. Do I truly? I have to truly. Love, sex, work, victory… I’ve seen all these things before. And I keep turning to these substances. They fill up my days and my hours and all the music is informed by them. They move my hands to play the guitar and my voice is scratchy when it comes out. I’ve formed an identity around these drugs to a certain extent. That idea of me has to die. It does. I’ll have to mourn it. I’ll have to mourn a lot. I guess I don’t know what to be afraid of. I know a lot of stuff is going to come up through this process. The drugs numb it all out. People say that but it’s really really true. Bad news doesn’t don’t hit you as hard. Most things don’t hit you at all. You’re in your world. You’re off in a cloud. You’re unaware of the world around you. You’re afraid to engage. Why?
It’s easier not to ask why. It’s easier to get the immediate relief of a squirt of etizolam tincture. Or a gross tossing of O-DSMT powder into your mouth and a quick washdown with water. In this way you don’t have to answer any questions. In this way nothing hits you. And guess what else? All your heroes did the same thing.
But a lot of them died doing it. And you don’t want to die. You really really don’t want to die. You want to live a long life, with kids and grandkids, and see what happens to America and what music turns into. You don’t want to die, but what do you have to live for? You know you can make things up. Everyone’s always making shit up. All of this is made up. The culture, the value of a dollar, the value of a Benz. We just decide on it. And that takes a lot. But you know what takes a lot less? Deciding how you want to react to each moment. This one and this one and this one. Do you know what I mean? They say a lot of stuff about the world. The world’s fucked. They say the world’s burning to the ground. They say we can’t leave our houses. They say America won’t be a super power by the end of all of this. But they’re making shit up. And I’m making shit up too. I’m whipping up like a chef. Throwing dishes out from the kitchen, but the dishes are words and actions and the kitchen is my mind. What kind of food am I throwing out? What kind of food am I serving the world? Let me serve love and hope. But for that to happen, let me cultivate it in myself first. Let me nurture it like a child. Let me see it sober. Let me take the steps in the right direction. It’s simple. It’s simpler than you think it is. What are you going to do right now, after reading this? Or while reading this? How are you going to face the world?
Jon told me he got into Xanax from the Famous Dex song “Japan.”
“Baby girl, what you doing, where your man? I just popped a xan, fifty thousand in Japan”
He told me his friends heard the song and picked up some Xanax because of it. They liked it and reached out to him “You’ve got to try this,” they said. My little brother, in the throes of this batshit demon force that will bury him. It might bury me too. The jury’s still out. Mom, just let me withdraw in peace. She brings down a space heater. I grow to love it. I lay down on the wood floor that the spiders sometimes dash across. The space heater comes close to burning me, but I’m ok. I stand up, dizzy from all I’ve done to try to combat the withdrawls. Way too much etizolam, way to much kratom, getting to the point of way too much weed and alcohol. But hopefully it’ll all be over soon, and I can call my friends in peace and not want to slam down the phone whenever there is the tiny threat of silence, or whenever I speak, or whenever they speak. I can’t any of it sober, that’s what I think. Life is hard sober; it’s a breeze when you’re floating thru it. A good dream. So why get sober? They say it’ll kill me. Well, I said that. In this very same paragraph. And maybe it will. But when you’re withdrawing like this… all you want is a moment of peace.
Oh God, at dinner tonight I started to go off about my own mental state to the family. I should have known it was a big mistaken, but on my way home from Doordashing a rainy Issaquah I stopped at QFC and got a bottle of True Eagle American Spirits, Kentucky manufactured vodka. And, helping myself to serving of kimchi,  I said to them “I think I’m losing it.” And the conversation spiraled until my mother asked me “Are you suicidal?” And “Are you struggling with drugs?” Jon, between us, must have felt betrayed, but I just wanted to feel understood. I feel Chuck does not want to understand. I understand what he’s sacrificed for the life he has, but what value does that life has to him? He has a tumor in his jawbone, and it’s eating away at him, and no one can do anything. And they can’t get out to the specialists on the East Coast, and they won’t do the invasive surgery. He’s too busy. I know, in some capacity, he understands. Because he blows these things off like they don’t matter at all, when anyday he could have a stroke like Grandma had, fall to the floor of the kitchen while dishing up his kimchi, or pulling a slice of pizza out of the carton. I feel the same way. I have no idea what’s going to happen, but I know that I am mentally unwell. And I avoid the questions about my drug use and about my suicidality. I miss girls, ma. I miss pussy and parties and not giving a fuck. The way I don’t give a fuck now is in these terrifying sound collages drafted on the latest of nights, in the deep dark depths of quaratine. What was I saying in the last one? Something about how I didn’t wanna kill the crabs on the beach on Whidbey Island as a kid. Holy shit I’m losing my mind. But it’s all fine, isn’t it? As long as the music comes out fine.
What could I possibly do to get healthy? I feel so far off the deep end. You have no idea; I feel like crying. My best friend, living with the girl I thought I could always go back to. We don’t talk. I mix these ketamine analogues in with that cheap cheap vodka (plus etizolam) and cry tears onto this plastic table. It’s pointless to keep up the tinder courtships. I feel like this will never end. And it started with such a bang. I was such a part of history. Now I’m a nobody; I’m a junkie, holding on by the thinnest thread. No energy to pray. I feel like Cobain, and I know so many people do… but I really do. I can only imagine. But I’m only listening to Mingus, Lana Del Rey and Radiohead (Kid A thru Hail to The Thief).
Should I throw weed in the mix? Lord knows I have enough of it. It’s my number one priority. I’ve made enough songs now that we could workshop what I’ve come up with years. What else is there to do? Mingus ripped the piano strings out of some pianist’s instrument in front of a live audience, then stormed off the stage. Where the fuck is that in my life? I’m in front of the computer, weeping because America has come to a close. You know they sent jazz to the Soviet Union as a WEAPON? A weapon of freedom and democracy and individualism. What the fuck happened? It all makes me want to cry. It’s all too much; this world. These people I’ve known and loved and lost. This music I’ve made that they promise me will be something, but I don’t know if I believe them. I don’t know if I want anything to do with this life. I can’t engage with my culture anymore… my history. I feel like I’m not a part of it. I feel so disconnected. Who’s rippin the strings out of MY piano? Or who’s piano am I ripping the strings out of? We’ve lost so much… I mean… I’ll do my best to work with what we still have, but we’ve been so fractured. It wouldn’t surprise me if this was the end. Of America. Of our culture. Of our music and our hustle and bustle and industry and lover’s lanes and rites of passage. I feel like I’m mourning it now. Mourning my culture. Maybe mourning the illusion that was sold to us. Believe me, I was first in line to buy. That’s why it destroys me so deeply to see it collapse.
I guess we’re all one people. I’m crying writing this. Weeping, weeping, weeping. Grieving. You know what grieving is. I remember what’s-her-name in the pool. We went to every hot tub, each a different temperature, in the Desert Hot Springs Resort. Then Lucy’s friend’s new boyfriend told us Bernie Sanders had stayed there when he had visited DHS. I laughed so hard. Lucy ordered me another drink. She didn’t mind the cost. She liked me to be on her level. And I didn’t mind. I was proud to sip. We went back to the hotel and did god knows what. Feels a million lifetimes away.
This was back when anything could happen. When America was a blank slate and no one could predict anything. When you could go outside and say “What the fuck is up?” and get in adventures. I mourn the loss of that. Maybe it’s all in my head. Maybe that’s still there. But I’ve emotionally severed my ties to it. And I wish I didn’t. Because I love it. I love it so much. It’s not a myth. I swear to god it’s not a myrh. It was a reality… until all this happened. You have no idea. I mean, if you’re reading this and weren’t around before. You have no idea. I mean… I don’t know what things are going to be like after this. But not the same. There’s no way they could be the same.
You know I hope I get this shit. I hope I contract COVID-19. Lay in this guest bedroom bed with the scabies I may or may not have gotten from Upstart Creative Living… and which wouldn’t die off. I hope I can’t breathe. I hope I’m immune. I want to walk the world. Maybe I should go out, get it, isolate, heal, be immune… if that’s even possible. At this point we don’t even know if immunity is a thing that happens with COVID. But even if I could walk the earth without fear of it… everyone else is cowering, and they pull away from, seeing I’m not wearing a mask or gloves, or even if I am… I’m so sorry. I didn’t know it would all end this way. I would have done so much more. Focused so much more on each kiss. Even every note. I did my best, I guess. It feels like it’s all coming to an end. It’s Thursday, April 23, but that doesn’t mean anything. You have to understand how little dates mean in this time. It’s like we’re living in one of those time capsules buried beneath the walkway at WWU. Stagnant… yeah we write songs and poems and do our work and keep the economy from faltering completely… but there’s a different angle to look at it all now. The world is over. I mean, aha, to use the words of Rem… “It’s the End of the World As We Know It.” Key words: “As we know it.” I had no idea this would happen in my lifetime… I couldn’t even conceive it. If you would have told me this would have happened six months ago I wouldn’t have believed it. America seemed so stable. And now it feels like it’s in shambles. It really did feel stable. You may think I’m insane for saying America in September, 2019 seemed stable… but shit, we were free. And we were headed where we were headed. This throws a wrench in all of this. And it could be the end. And I thought this was the greatest country on earth. Happiness is a buttery, try to catch it like every night.
I’ve been fascinated in American history since I could understand it. Most specifically, I’ve been fascinated about how history is still happening. The closer you get you the current day, the harder it is to get a straight story. FDR did what he did and we won. That’s fact. That’s cement. Nixon? Everyone agrees he was a crook. But what about Reagan? What about Bush Sr? What about Clinton? The closer you get to the modern day, the more difficult it becomes to discern what is real and what is fake.

Fiction and Reality
(also known as Hamliet tries to explain why she says certain things that are controversial in metas) Fiction isn't reality, and it doesn't play by real life rules--well, at least not generally (and it isn't entirely removed from reality either, as I'll address later). It depends on genre. For example in a postmodern realistic work, yes, it probably plays pretty close to reality. But I'm going to specifically talk about Tokyo Ghoul, and basically try to explain why I interpret it the way I do.
It's a dark fantasy. It's seinen. It has established its tropes as Freudian and Jungian. While a good story generally maintains a level of emotional realism, (give or take--heightened reality is a thing in some stories, but again, it's all grounded in real life emotions, just amplified), its characters have to do things real life people don't have to do. For one thing, confronting the shadow. That dark part of yourself no one in TG wants to face in this current arc. Amon needs to face Donato, whereas in real life, if Amon was a person I'd be saying you never have to face a man who traumatized you as a child. But according to the story's tropes and themes, Amon needs to face the man whom he has become just like, but refuses to acknowledge. Donato would be his mirror. Akira needs to face Seidou, who loves her, but is also a violent murderer who even physically resembles her father. Kaneki needs to face the Quinx too, face that he has hurt his "children" in addition to other children, to reinforce to him that he is exactly what his mother was. Touka needs to recognize what Mutsuki represents, because if she doesn't, no one will be able to save Kaneki. Mutsuki (and the other Quinx, but especially Mutsuki right now) is Kaneki and is acting just like him in acting violently for the sake of keeping someone they love and cling to close by. In real life, I'd be saying that Touka absolutely is under no obligation to show any empathy or even try to understand a person who has tried to kill her out of envy multiple times. In fiction, Touka needs to do this, because if they don't reconsider their plans for saving Kaneki, it's going to happen again. If all they plan to do is pull Kaneki out of Dragon and love him, that's... exactly what got him into this position in the first place. They need to confront Kaneki, and yes, they need to think ahead. In real life I wouldn't necessarily say this; I'd say prioritize getting him out and then consider it. In TG I think they need to pre-plan, or at least acknowledge that some things need to be worked out after he's saved from Dragon, because Kaneki's lack of planning is also a major contributor to his current predicament and Ishida has not given us any hints that the characters (specifically the Aces) are planning on confronting him afterwards, or even considering it. They had time to talk about honeymoons=they had time to consider this, but haven't. Hence, the problem they’re avoiding comes to them in the form of Mutsuki. I know stating that Touka should have worked towards ghoul rights earlier is controversial, but again, I'll say it's a matter of fiction vs reality. In real life, oppressed groups of people are never obligated to fight on the front lines for their rights. In fiction, when Touka has married someone who gives speeches about making sure ghouls have a better place in the world, etc., and literally leads an organization centered on that premise, she does have an obligation. (When she was working at :re as an ordinary citizen, she was not under any story obligation to do so. That changed when Kaneki asked her to come with him, and she agreed--even before Mutsuki showed up.) But she hasn't shown that she cares about this, which is likely also reflective of her own self-hatred for being a ghoul. Hence why I say the story should push her to care, because it would show her overcoming her self-hatred. In real life, I wouldn't say this at all, and I do understand why some people find this concept offensive and I’m not able to speak on it (see below for why). In real life, I'd encourage Touka to end things with Kaneki (like would you encourage someone to stay with someone who murdered thousands for your sake? I wouldn't), and Hide to do likewise, and also Nishiki with Kimi, etc. But this isn't real life. I expect these relationships, romantic or friendship, to work out and I want them to, even if I don’t like Kimi anymore. In real life, I'd say Mutsuki and Kaneki should receive psychiatric care, Kimi should spend significant time in jail, Tsukiyama should too, and basically everyone, even Touka and Ayato, etc. But this isn't real life. Jail as a punishment doesn't work in dark fantasy stories because a characters' arcs stall (see: Hinami). A psychiatric facility wouldn't work for the same reasons: while in real life that would be vital to their growth, it's not in fiction, and Kaneki needs to be around to hold his baby, etc. If Mutsuki can't be saved, that should warn everyone else not to fuck up with Kaneki. If Mutsuki is saved, that should show Touka & co. how they need to save Kaneki, and saving Mutsuki likely isn't going to end with him in a psychiatric facility. Real people deserve to be loved and happy just because they exist. I firmly believe this and the idea that people have to suffer to be happy makes me sick. But that's not the case with a dark fantasy with Freudian/Jungian themes wherein suffering is a major part of the story. Characters have to earn what they want in these kinds of stories--that's the definition of an arc (you have to struggle with your flaws to get what you want). That's why I fear for characters who have goals and flaws but don't struggle (Hide and Saiko). It doesn't tend to end well because if you don't work towards something, you're usually fodder. But again, this isn't the case in real life. No one deserves to suffer, and I strongly believe every single person matters. But in stories, suffering is usually, like, plot, and stories sans plot tend to be very boring. That being said: fiction does not occur in a vacuum, and it is worth taking a critical eye to some of the themes and representation among the characters, etc. For example, if Ishida does end Mutsuki's arc with him being the Kaneki they can't save, I'd say that's a downright irresponsible and offensive story to tell given the sexual abuse/mental health/gender issues affecting his character. I'm personally not exactly thrilled with the LGBT representation in TG. But that doesn't generally affect how I view the story in terms of where it's likely to go/what encounters are supposed to represent/what characters likely have to do. Of course I’m biased and I can’t remove myself from that because I’m a human person, so obviously keep that in mind, even though I do try to be as objective as possible. It’s understandable that people can feel frustrated with how the story works within our society be it from using slapstick humor with Kaneki and Touka, Touka (maybe) needing to work for ghoul rights, even Mutsuki’s current spiral. Fiction and how it affects reality (because since fiction is written in our world, they can't be 100% removed from each other) is a whole separate issue from the analyses I write. Unless I deliberately state it, I'm not intending to make a critique of people in real life, or say real life people are obligated to respond to characters in certain ways, etc.

here are a bunch of AMAZING fics I’ve enjoyed and loved reading throughout the month of july. I recommend that you read these great fics in august, if you haven’t already!! also check out the HL Summer Fic Exchange - my fic will be posted soon (hopefully)!
(all fics with a star are my favorites and if there are two stars then it was a favorite favorite)
1. Just a Walk in the Park 124k **
It's 2015, the first time dinosaurs walked the earth in over 65 million years. The multi-billion dollar company, Twist Corporations, is planning a summer opening for their world changing attraction, "Jurassic Park".
They take an interest in the history making duo of Dr. Louis Tomlinson, a stubborn paleontologist, and his partner, paleobotanist Dr. Liam Payne, giving them the chance of a lifetime to work for the new theme park. Louis is apprehensive, but Liam has a "gut feeling" that it will change their lives. He isn't wrong.
Featuring Niall as the top engineer to get the park up and running, Zayn as the raptor expert, and Harry as the grandson of one of the most influential men in the world.
2. Let’s Embrace the Point of No Return 33k
Louis was a whole new scale of beautiful, he was richer than Harry could've ever imagined, and he was the most powerful, dominant alpha that Harry had ever come in contact with. The only problem now is that Louis is also Harry's boss.
Louis believed Harry was an alpha, and had no idea about how he had lied about his status just to get an interview with Louis. He was in too deep now and he couldn't look back.
Or, Harry is an omega intern at an all alpha company. Louis is his boss. There's some complications.
3. How Could I Ever Forget 14k
After his boyfriend leaves him for a job in New York, Harry vows to move on with his life. A year later when their best friends announce their engagement, Harry knows he'll be forced to see Louis again and face the truth he's been trying his best to hide--even from himself.
Or a Vegas AU where Ziam's bachelor party turns into drunken karaoke, winning thousands at slots, washing your clothes at the laundromat in your underwear, and making life altering decisions that you can't remember in the morning.
4. Boys Fall Like Dominoes 6k *
Harry slips into an early heat while riding the tube. Naturally, that's when he meets Louis.
5. Looking in the Dark 7k
This carries on from the same a/b/o verse of Boys Fall Like Dominoes.
6. Swallow My Words 32k
Senior year is stressful. On top of balancing school work, family, and friends, Harry's lacrosse team is vying to win the state championship, he's not sure where he's going to college yet, and he has a secret boyfriend that no one can know about.
7. Just a Flower Boy 70k
Harry Styles is a clumsy, flower crown-wearing, openly gay junior with only two true friends, Niall and Zayn. Louis Tomlinson is the school's attractive, straight football captain, with a small body and a big personality. As fate will have it, Harry has a huge, unrequited, utterly hopeless crush on Louis.
Fate is thrown out the window the day that Harry and Louis find themselves partnered up for a history project. Harry starts to receive notes from a secret admirer, Louis starts to get jealous of Harry's budding friendship with senior Nick Grimshaw, Zayn and Liam develop a thing for each other, and Niall is the best mate anyone could have asked for. And suddenly, Harry's crush on Louis doesn't seem so utterly hopeless anymore.
8. Only Reason 5k **
“We are so lucky to have with us one of the leading experts on beekeeping in the modern age, Dr. Louis Draper.”
No. No, no, no…
“I know I speak for many of us when I say that this man’s books have guided our practice, or helped us get started,” Harry continued, and Louis watched as the crowd nodded their heads in agreement.
Oh shit. No. What? No.
But then Harry was gesturing towards him, saying “Dr. Draper?” into the microphone, the crowd was applauding, and Louis found himself walking up the stairs to the stage.
Or, Louis is most definitely smitten with Harry from the second he sees him, but he is also most definitely not the world's foremost expert on beekeeping. He decides to roll with it anyway.
9. L'Été en Azur 26k *
In which Hogwarts students Louis, Liam and Niall go on a summer exchange to Beauxbatons.
10. I’ll Be Yours to Keep 17k
Louis should've thought a lot more about who he said his fake boyfriend is, especially since he and his "significant other" kinda hate each other. Most of the time.
11. I Am the Blinking Light 19k **
There is a legend of a lighthouse far out to sea. It can’t be found on any map, and those who do find it never return. They say a ghost haunts the lighthouse, and you can hear it calling out in loneliness on the ocean waves.
12. Packed Lunches, Sticky Fingers and Accidental Levitation 10k
Harry Styles is a skilled work-from-home potionist five years out of university with a steady job, a house, and... eight kids.
He also might be heading towards a breakdown if he doesn't get a bit of help.
Enter a meddling pixie and an old university friend he might or might not have had a lot of feelings for.
13. Moments of Memories 17k **
And that’s when his heart stops.
It stops only to a second later flutter like the wings of a hummingbird against his ribcage. The noise of the crowd melts into an intangible buzzing in his ears. He stares at the picture and he knows he should question the reason for why his body has suddenly gone haywire, but he doesn’t.
Because he knows those eyes, would recognize them anywhere, and now they are staring back at him from a picture on a wall.
Reunited AU. Harry Styles met Louis Tomlinson at the age of 6. At the age of 23 he lost him.
What happens when he meets him again 36 years later?
14. Grenadine Sunshine 18k
Harry’s only sixteen, it shows right now, and Louis wants…he wants so many things. He wants to taste the faint, sugary ghost of lip gloss, he wants to cup Harry’s face between his palms and swipe the shimmery wet shadows from beneath his eyes. He wants to show him everything he knows, even though he doesn’t know anything about this, about kissing boys or flirting with them or doing their makeup or even showing them it’s okay to want to wear makeup in the first place. Still, Louis just wants, wants and wants and wants. It’s what Harry does to him.
15. Between Chaos and Control 19k
Companion piece to 'The Wonderlands' written from Louis' POV.
16. Sweet Creature 78k *
“You're having a nightmare and I feel bad because you're trembling and crying so I crawl into bed with you and hold you so you feel safe, but in the morning you wake up with my arms around you and you're really confused and embarrassed.”
17. Stood Up 8k
Harry Styles is a popstar, the media’s newest sweetheart. Louis Tomlinson is a fresh out of rehab rock star. They hadn’t intended to spend the evening together.
The media would have a field day when they found out.
18. Heart on an Open Highway 5k
AU. Harry's a popstar about to release his second album, and Louis is the Radio 1 intern who gets his heart racing.
19. That How I Know 17k
Louis Tomlinson has just landed his dream job, coaching soccer at Augustus University. When he moves into a new house near campus, he meets his very fit new neighbor, English professor Harry Styles. Although their first meeting leads to an instant mutual dislike, the more Harry gets to know Louis, the more he likes what he sees.
Or the one where Harry’s African grey parrot spills his dirty secrets to his very hot neighbor.
20. Like an Endless Summer 87k **
“You just wanna go fawn over Styles as soon as possible,” Zayn grumbles.
“I do not. Plus, he probably got ugly this year. Eighteen is an awkward time...I bet he’s got acne and one of those terrible fuckboy haircuts all the hipsters are getting these days, with the shaved sides? Just watch, the first year we’re gonna get any time together is gonna be the first year I don’t have a stupid crush on him.”
Or, Louis is a riding instructor at a summer camp, and Harry is a fellow counselor who he’s been successfully managing his crush on for the last two summers. That is, until Harry shows up this year leveled up and lethal, and all Louis’s formerly perfected veneer of nonchalance melts like a popsicle in the sun.
21. It Doesn’t Feel Like a Win 20k
Louis just got back from tour, and doesn’t want to deal with people. Especially not noisy show hosts, who make him snap and come out on an impulse. It doesn’t help that his manager is an asshole, and he seems to bump into the certain show host everywhere. He just wants to drink a hot tea already.
or, Louis is a closeted ace celebrity, Harry is a TV show host, Liam is too sensible and Niall drinks too much.
22. The Boys of Summer 4k
Harry is in love with Louis and would have given anything to be his partner for the end of term literature assignment. Louis is the only kid in the class who can get away with anything, and all he wants is the attention of the pretty boy with the curls across the room. Featuring lots of banter, pining, flirting, and Fionn as an unwilling Cupid.
23. Hush. 41k **
“I don't like you like that, Harry.”
“See,” Harry starts, Louis can hear the smile in his voice, “that's where I think you're lying.”
Or, an AU where small towns suck, Louis is losing it, and Harry’s just too perfect.
24. The Melody You Never Heard 30k *
It's one last adventure. One last chance to be young and carefree. One final weekend before they take up their internships, their corporate positions, before they enter the real world, fresh out of university. Niall's his best mate. Liam's been there for him since they were lost, little freshmen, trying to find their ways through an overwhelming first year. Harry can't disappoint them, even if it means enduring four days with Louis.
Louis, who he does share a history with, a history he's never told anyone about, not even Niall, a history he hasn't brought up in three years because it's stupid and embarrassing and confusing.
Or, the one where Harry gets roped into a four-day camping trip with the boy who kissed him and never called back.
25. We'll Play Hide and Seek to Turn This Around (Give Me Love like Never Before) 19k
“So here's the thing,” he starts. “I didn't mean what I said a few weeks ago to like, hurt your feelings or anything. If you like painting your nails, then you should do that, and not like, care if anyone else doesn't like it because their opinions shouldn't matter, you know?” Louis takes a breath, finally glancing over to see the boy wide-eyed and pink-cheeked. On a whim, he adds, “And like, I noticed you scraping it off and you haven't been wearing any and I think you should because that's what you like.”
Or an AU where Harry paints his nails and drinks strawberry milk and is too nervous for it to be nothing and Louis' just trying to figure out what's wrong with him.
26. Reminiscence 22k
"Harry I've done so much wrong."
Harry's quiet for a moment. "I don't think it matters how much you've done wrong because maybe you're different. Maybe you'll fix it with doing things right.
The smoldering look Louis gives him says a number of things. "You'll just be the one thing I do right then."
27. Homegrown 51k **
“It wasn’t an easy decision, if I’m honest,” Harry admits, shoulders sagging in on himself. “Moving is really difficult. My whole life was in Manchester. But Manchester didn’t want me. Leeds did.”
“Well, Leeds is happy to have you,” Louis says, giving Harry a kind smile.
Harry brightens a bit at that, undeniably pleased. “Yeah?”
“Yeah,” Louis replies, expression soft and lips curved.
Or, a gardening AU where Harry is new to town and the newest volunteer at the local gardening club, Louis is the attractive grandson of one of the members, and the nosy volunteers hatch a plan to get them together.
28. Take Me Back to Where We Started 27k **
Harry and Louis haven't spoken since they broke up four years ago. As boarding school sweethearts they once spent every waking moment together, but now they can hardly stand to be in the same room. When their five year class reunion comes around, both boys decide against their better judgement to return and (hopefully) have a good time.
The only problem is, they're both still hopelessly in love.
Starring Harry as the petty ex, Louis as the new James Bond, Niall as a boy genius and fake boyfriend extraordinaire, and Liam and Zayn as two friends just trying to make it out of this weekend alive.

So here’s the thing. I graduated a couple of months ago. I now officially have a BSc in theoretical physics. But it’s an ordinary degree. It’s not an honours degree, and it’s definitely not the MPhys degree that I should have gotten. And that’s because I failed. I failed a lot of exams, and didn’t sit other ones because there was no point in putting myself through the stress when I knew for a fact that I was going to fail again. And that wasn’t being defeatist, that was being realistic. So after four years at university, I got an ordinary degree.
After four years of university, I had planned to have a masters degree.
But I failed. I fucked up. Because of a whole raft of circumstances relating to only getting my autism diagnosis after royally fucking up my second year of uni and then being fucked over by the uni’s disability service and just generally having no idea how to study because I never needed to before. I aced school. I did extra exams every year that they would let me, and I got straight As. And I barely had to study at all. Then uni comes along with its ‘self-guided learning’ and lack of the structure that had let me thrive at school, and I crashed and burned. I went straight into second year because of my straight As in my final year exams, fucked up third year, was thrown into fourth year anyway. A retroactive interruption of study after the first semester of fourth year went as terribly as you’d expect did no good, because then I had even less structure. Repeating fourth year (now actually in my fourth year at uni) was a non-starter. I ended up not doing half my exams because there was no point. I only got a degree out of the whole mess based on accumulated credits from 2nd and 3rd year.
I didn’t try my best, I didn’t work hard and fail anyway, I just failed. And I’m slowly trying to convince myself that that’s okay. It happens. Sometimes something you thought you’d be great at turns out to not be for you, and that’s okay. Sometimes the standard path through life isn’t for you because you have a disability and that means you’re not a standard person. A type of learning might not suit you, and that’s okay too.
And I’m getting there. I’ll eventually maybe be okay about the whole thing. It’ll help once I actually have an idea of where to go from here, because right now I’m directionless and it’s big and scary and difficult to process. And I’ve got people in my corner who’ll support me regardless of what comes next.
But then every time I’m starting to think that being okay is an achievable goal, I remember that my dad exists and he’s being utterly fucking useless and is in fact actively causing me more stress than any other thing in my life right now, and suddenly I’m Really Not Remotely Okay.
I’ve seen him four, maybe five times in the last year? The most recent time was a couple of months ago in May, around when I’d made the decision that I wasn’t sitting my last batch of exams because there was no point. But it was for only a few hours over lunch and his fucking girlfriend was there so the sum total of things I was able to say to him as my parent was two sentences about that decision before the subject was changed. Because he might as well be a stranger when Lynn is around. She’s definitely a bloody stranger, that’s for certain. I have tried to find something likeable about her, something we could talk about, anything to move her from the category of ‘adult stranger’ to ‘significant other of person I care about’, but nope. There’s nothing. And when she’s around, my dad isn’t my dad. He’s her boyfriend. It’s jarring and unpleasant and there is a reason that I’ve gotten so angry and uncomfortable that I’ve had to just straight up leave when I was supposed to be spending time with them.
And what has my dad done about the fact that I did something so enormously out of character not once, but twice? Absolutely fucking nothing. He’s not even mentioned it, not once.
And do you know what else he hasn’t bothered to do? Ask anything at all about what my uni situation is. All he knows is that I didn’t sit that last set of exams. Did he bother to ask about what that meant for my degree, or whether I’d be graduating at all, or even think that maybe I might be graduating and there would be a possibility I’d want him to be there? No. No, he didn’t. For the record, I got my degree in the post. There was no way I was celebrating something that as far as I’m concerned is a failure, not an achievement. But does dad know that? No. He didn’t even bother to find out. No thought whatsoever for the slim possibility that I might want one of my parents at my graduation, no thought that I might feel bad about not achieving what I set out to and it might be nice to have some parental reassurance.
I have gotten absolutely no communication from him since that one day in May when he and Lynn had lunch with me and my sisters. A lunch I very nearly didn’t go to because there was a very distinct possibility that I’d end up storming off for a third time.
And then yesterday morning I got a text. A text that was quite clearly sent to all three of us (my sisters and I), asking when we were going to be free over the August bank holiday weekend, and that was it.
I don’t think I want to see him? I don’t think I can deal with hanging out for a few hours and letting him pretend he’s being a parent, all the while completely avoiding any topic that might require him to have a conversation that’s even slightly emotionally engaged. I’d like to have a proper conversation with my father, maybe even yell at him a bit because he quite frankly deserves it, and if that’s not going to happen then I don’t want to see him.
I want my dad back. I want to go back to the couple of years where I genuinely would have found it hard to choose between my parents if it had come to that. Because the man that shows up once every few months to play act being a parent quite frankly isn’t worth my time.
But I don’t know what to do about it? And that’s the worst thing. I have no idea how to confront him, no idea how to communicate any of this, no idea if I’m even capable of yelling at him because I spent so long playing mediator and being the quiet and reasonable one that I’m straight up physically incapable of raising my voice. I was Mum’s shoulder to cry on, the person Dad could complain about Mum to, the eldest sibling who acted as a buffer and reassurance to my sisters, and somewhere along the way I either lost or just never developed the ability to shout at people. Along with ‘learning’ that shouting never solves anything, that getting angry is counter-productive, that dumping your emotions on someone else is selfish and might hurt them more than it helps you...
I was fifteen when my parents actually divorced. Meaning that the years and years of build-up to that, the years and years when I was the mediator stuck in the middle? I was even younger. I was a child. There’s nothing fair about that. And it’s almost definitely why I didn’t even realise I had problems of my own until I was at university, because before then I’d been to busy dealing with everyone else’s shit to pay attention to myself.
And another consequence of that is that dad has never actually lived with me while I’ve been having problems. He’s just showed up every few weeks (later months) and spent a few hours with me, during which time I was more concerned with spending time with the parent that I missed horribly than talking about any issues I was having. So he’s just. Oblivious. He hasn’t bothered to try and understand the true nature of my circumstances, the actual consequences of my having a disability, the fact that I genuinely have trouble with things that he’s just been assuming I’ll be capable of doing. It’s not nearly as simple as ‘you’ve finished uni, now go get a job’. But he hasn’t bothered to understand and I don’t know how to make him understand and it’s all just building up and stressing me out and it’s Not Fair. It’s not fair and I deserve better from him and it makes me want to fucking throw things because I can’t even scream about it because I Can’t Be Loud and my throat will physically close up on me if I try.
And I hadn’t realised how fucked up that was until I saw a post about that being something that’s a thing for abuse victims. In my case it’s from years and years of being the Sensible And Level-Headed Mediator but I just. It brought me up short, that post.
I don’t process negative emotions very well. Oftentimes I can’t tell what they are other than ‘not good’. But right now I’m tired and I’m sad and I’m angry and they’re all feeding into each other and it’s got to the point where I have to work really hard to not start crying whenever dad comes up in conversation or something reminds me of him.
And I just. Needed to try and get all of this down and release it into the void because never talking about things that upset me is one of my worst bad habits, and it’s going to take a lot of chipping away and working at it to break it. And I need to break it, because it’s not doing me any good at all.
