Lucy x Levy; Levy listening to Lucy's heartbeat as she rewrites the Book of E.N.D, E.N.D marking spreading to Lucy's heart as she does so.
This is a oneshot that takes place when Lucy is rewriting the Book of E.N.D. and instead of Gray being there, it's Levy. This is also if Lucy wasn't actually fine in the end.
WARNING: DEATH!
This is the END (Levy x Lucy)
Levy sat next to her girlfriend, watching with widened eyes as blood-red runes surrounded them, struggling to make out what they said. She noticed Lucy moving next to her and looked over to see that she had picked up the feathered quill and was holding it up. The blue-haired woman muttered, "what are you doing?"
Before she could get an answer, she watched as Lucy whimpered, her eyes seeming to be fixed on something in front of her that only she could see. What appeared to be flowing lava overtook her hand and ran down the blonde's arm, like veins, reaching her neck and the side of her face.
Happy, from his place beside Levy, spoke, "something's...happening to her."
Just then Lucy's body began trembling and her whimpers turned into pained gasps. Levy hesitantly reached for her girlfriend, her heart twisting within her chest at the obvious pain the blonde was in. Just before her fingers could even ghost her girlfriend's skin, Lucy dropped the quill and doubled over, her arms wrapped around herself. Levy and Happy both gasped in horror as the celestial wizard began screaming in agony, tears trickling down her face.
"Lucy!" Levy and Happy both exclaimed.
Levy reached for her girlfriend's shoulder, muttering, "Lucy? Are you okay?" It was a stupid question. Clearly, she wasn't okay, but it was the only thing that she could think of to say.
The blue-haired woman retracted her hand the instant it made contact with the other woman's shoulder, reflexively yelping, "ow!"
After several moments of pained gasps and trembling, Lucy uttered, "something inside me...is burning." She then choked on a cry.
Levy felt tears burn her eyes at the sight, however, she quickly wiped them away. She wasn't going to cry. Not when her girlfriend was seeming to be burning alive. Crying won't do any good, she told herself.
It was Happy who spoke next, "Natsu's fire..."
Levy finished the thought, "his fire as a demon..."
She watched as Lucy moved her infected hand to rest over one eye as she struggled to sit straight and managed to say, "but I can use this...as a clue..." The blonde then looked back at the red runes, which seemed to have smoke rising off of them. Levy looked too, but quickly moved her gaze back to her girlfriend when she heard her continue, "if I follow this magic power..." Her gaze dropped as she gasped out, "I might..."
Happy took up so that she wouldn't have to finish, "you might be able to rewrite the demon inside Natsu."
Levy gasped at that. Tears welled up in her eyes again. She felt the urge to try and convince her girlfriend to not do it, however, she was able to hold herself back, if just barely. She knew that she couldn't convince Lucy to not do something that she had already decided to do, especially at a time like this, when Natsu's own life was on the line.
Happy finished, "but if you do that, you'll..."
Lucy murmured, "I'll be fine..."
That was a lie, Levy knew that it was. Her stomach turned and she felt nauseous and her chest ached, feeling as though she had been stabbed through the heart, and yet was somehow still alive and capable of feeling everything. Her dark eyes burned with tears that were now falling freely. The blue-haired woman watched, feeling helpless, as her girlfriend somehow managed to push through the pain and picked up the quill again before raising it once more and beginning to write.
Levy felt frozen, her body refusing to do anything, although, that might have been a good thing since there seemed to be very little that she could do. Her dark, tear-filled eyes were locked on Lucy's trembling body. She felt helpless and her mind was jumbled with thoughts that she was unable to make sense of, and wasn't able to even begin to make sense of them. Racing through her mind were worries about what was to happen to her girlfriend, as well as pained thoughts about how much pain her girlfriend was in.
Feeling like she was on autopilot, the blue-haired woman crawled around Lucy to sit in front of her before she leaned forward to rest her ear against the blonde's chest. The side of her face burned painfully, nonetheless, she remained, sharing in at least a fraction of the pain that her girlfriend was feeling. She closed her eyes as she let the sound of Lucy's heartbeat reach her searing ear.
Before this conflict with Zeref and his henchmen began, she and Lucy would spend night after night cuddled together. It was Lucy's steady heartbeat that would lull Levy to sleep every night, her head resting on the blonde's chest just like now. Tears flowed down her face at an increased rate as Levy noticed that her girlfriend's heartbeat was no longer steady and serene, but instead was slowing at an alarming speed as the minutes passed. She knew that the curse was inching closer to the blonde's heart.
The blue-haired woman pressed the side of her face into her girlfriend's chest even more, silently urging her heart to pick up speed and return to normal. A hopeless wish, she knew. She remembered the many dates that they had gone on, not caring about any past events and not thinking that anything could come along and ruin their lives. She mourned the dates that they hadn't been able to go on and the wedding that they both desperately wanted to have.
But most of all, she mourned the woman who she was going to lose.
She didn't move, or even open her eyes, until she felt Lucy lean against her. She opened her eyes, but didn't pull away. Then, hesitantly, she raised a hand to touch Lucy's bare skin, quickly noticing that her girlfriend wasn't as burning hot as she was before.
Levy instantly pulled away and wrapped her arms around her girlfriend. Looking at Lucy's face, she found that her eyelids were nearly closed and she wasn't moving. The blue-haired woman gently laid Lucy on her back and stared down at her, one hand under her head and the other resting on her stomach.
She silently stared down at her seemingly lifeless girlfriend, begging her to wake up and be okay. She whispered, "Lucy?" Her tears dripped off of her face onto Lucy's, making it appear that Lucy too was crying. Levy brought her hand up from Lucy's stomach to wipe the tears away from her girlfriend's pale face. She unconsciously held her breath as she waited for any indication that the blonde in her arms was still alive.
After several moments, Lucy groaned as she opened her eyes with some difficulty. The blonde's brown eyes quickly found Levy's own dark ones. She opened her mouth to speak, but nothing came out except for almost inaudible sounds. Levy quickly shushed her, whispering, "you don't have to say anything." Her tears became heavier as she realized that she was facing her girlfriend's death. She turned her head away as a choked sob escaped her.
A hand then weakly rose and rested on her cheek, bringing her eyes back to the blonde who was laying on the ground. Lucy smiled at her. She then opened her mouth again, this time managing to say, if with some struggle, "p-please stop...crying...I-I'm s-sorry that...we c-couldn't get m-married." She then took a deep breath before she finished, "I-I love you...Levy."
With that, Lucy's eyes closed and her hand dropped to the ground. Panicked and desperate, Levy cupped her girlfriend's face as she screamed, "don't go! Don't you dare leave me! Lucy! You can't die! You can't leave us! You can't leave me!"
When she felt a small, furry paw rest on her side, she looked over to see Happy next to her. His eyes were locked on Lucy's lifeless body as tears streamed down his face and he muttered, "she's gone." It sounded as though he couldn't believe it himself.
Levy looked back down at Lucy. She wrapped her arms around the dead blonde and pulled her to her chest. She took a deep, raspy breath before she began to wail, screaming out in agony before she quickly quieted and sobbed to herself, her face buried in Lucy's blonde hair.

To Traitors
NOT A PR0MPT
******
"The general wants to send me to your homeland."
"For war?"
Villain hummed. "We knew it was coming."
"Of course." Hero shook her head and pushed a shirt further into the bucket of water. She bent it and twisted it and shoved it again. "How did she react when you told her 'no'?"
That was the thing; Villain didn't deny the general. No one denied the general.
Hero picked up on the silence. She always did. “Where does that leave us?”
A choice.
War?
Or her?
“You know this decision is not mine.”
"Sure, it is. I always wanted to travel- try camping."
Camping. Hero knew rejecting orders would be considered traitorous. She would rather be homeless and shunned than to standby while her homeland was being attacked.
"Hero..."
"Is that something you are not willing to do?" Her movements became rushed, like she was trying to maintain a calm, but the only way to do so was to move along with the emotions. She grabbed a shirt, dunked it, rung it, tossed it. Grab, dunk, ring. Grab, dunk, ring. They weren't even becoming clean, and the water needed changed. "My family is there. Where are they meant to go?"
"Even if I did tell the general no, I cannot stop an entire army from marching. The war will happen with or without me."
A sigh veiled the tension in the room. Villain's weight creaked beneath him as he stepped towards his lover. He took a linen shirt, wet and soaked, from her hands, and dropped it in the brown water. He found her hands next, then tugged her up slightly. She took the cue and stood, let herself be held.
"I love you," Villain said.
Hero didn't like crying. This is why Villain began rubbing her back as he pulled her into an embrace. She buried her face into his chest and sniffed once, twice...wiped a face full of tears, sniffed again...stopped, then began sobbing. No amount of squeezing could console the thought of her family being innocently slaughtered.
"You would hide them, wouldn't you? If you found them, you would save them?"
His grip loosened. He whispered, “Of course I would.” Did Hero know it might have been a lie? Even Villain wasn't sure what he would do when the time came that he marched onto her homeland.
"When do you leave?"
"Tomorrow."
"Then I'm leaving now." She attempted to pull away from Villain's chest, but he held her firmly. Her muscles tensed beneath him, but Villain knew she knew better than to try again.
"Hero, be level-headed.
"I want to warn them," she whispered, so quietly that Villain only knew what she said because of how well he knew her. He knew her every thought before she even had it herself. It wasn't magic; just love.
"And you think you will outrun an entire army overnight?"
"I know I won't!" her tone had changed, and this time when she pulled away, she didn't stop until Villain let her go. "But who am I to not try at all? Who would I be, Villain?" Her face was red and swollen, glistening with sad, then angry tears.
For a moment, she stopped. She took a breath. then swallowed as if she needed to stop herself from asking what obviously came to her mind. Alas, she said it. "How long have you known?" Her voice cracked, and Villain could see she already knew the answer: longer than he should have known before telling her.
"I'm sorry."
"I didn't ask for an apology." Her eyes refused to meet his. Villain was almost glad for it. He couldn't bear her anger, not when it was directed at him. "I asked how long you have known."
"Hero..."
"Clean your own damn clothes. I'll pay the Baker family back when I return."
"Pay them back? For w-" No. "You're not taking their horse." Hero was already scrounging around, first grabbing a raggedy sack, then stuffing one random item after another in. "Hero, stop. Hero-" She was going to take the neighbor's horse just to get caught up in the war herself. "Stop!"
She fell to her knees in the next moment. Broke down as if his voice took out the last support beam keeping the house together. hero cried, screamed, and wailed. "No. No. No. No. No," she repeated, and her voice broke time and time again as she screamed.
Tears sprung into Villain's eyes. What did he do?
"I'll send a bird. It will arrive before our army does, and when they receive it, they will know to leave."
Hero's head lifted, and her puffy eyes finally met Villain's glistening ones. "I will prepare beds. We have pelts; I can throw something together, and my brother can take-"
One blow after another, each and every passing moment. Just when Villain thought all might be well, the both of them realized there was no saving anyone. The war was an ambush, and Hero's brother would be expected to take a stand, to protect his own homeland.
"I won't-" Villain swallowed. "I won't harm your family. I will send the bird, and I will pray with every moment of travel that they receive it and leave. I will not draw my sword until I find their home empty, until I am sure they have left."
"You would be a traitor to your own kingdom."
"Better it this kingdom than you."

*grabs tiktok's shoulders* Jude isn't selfish. she is not a self-serving girlboss. the reason she played for the throne was 1) to keep Oak safe, 2) to keep mortals safe, and only then 3) to grab as much power as she could. she could have been and is always tempted to be, but she always stops herself in time.

While I know the arc isn’t going to be rewritten until after it’s done, do you think the researchers would be PISSED that this random vet sterilized one of their cats? I imagine they’re pretty protective of their cats, and this could throw a huge wrench into their studies
They would be. It's not like the Clan cats are an little-known thing in BB, either! It's pretty common knowledge that the colonies around Sanctuary Lake are of scientific interest.
There's even little signs up and such warning hikers not to feed or harass them. Public interest in the project is currently a bit low in this particular time period (it waxes and wanes) but the horse farm is well aware of them. They run a horseback riding business here; there's almost certainly special signs warning riders of what to do if a Clan cat spooks your mount, and they do bring curious visitors to the lake.
Frostpaw will probably not get sterilized in BB, though. Why the hell would a horse vet do surgery and TNR right there in the field, only taking a single day? Especially if Clan cats are known and studied?
What's probably going to happen instead is that Smoky runs for a human, who dials the nearby sanctuary, and the people who visit Frostpaw in BB are the researchers. IF I even end up keeping it at all.

Genuinely curious as to if you asked permission to use Rachel’s characters and she said yes or if you just decided Lore Olympus is popular enough to make a fan comic of and are hoping you don’t receive a cease and desist? Can anyone create a remake comic of original content and just change what you don’t like about it and it’s considered legal if you say the characters belong to the original creator? There is plenty of disappointing media out there that could be remade. I understand you cannot use their characters for profit so is just posting it ok?
Yes, anyone can, because it's called fanfiction lmao Obviously in my case the term "fan" is being used loosely here as at this point it's more like "foe"fiction LMAO but the same principles apply. Unless I try to claim LO is my own creation or make a profit off Rekindled, I should be in the clear. If legal action was taken against me then it would set a precedent against all forms of fanfiction, rewrite, redraw, etc. content around LO which are all essentially doing the same thing Rekindled is doing. I think people tend to view Rekindled as somewhat of an "exception" that's vulnerable to legal action because it's an actual weekly comic put into practice in the same playing field as LO (though they're on massively different bases obviously LOL), but there's not much more separating it from the LO redraw accounts or even the genuine fan accounts that have learned how to draw in Rachel's style (and use it to make their own LO self-inserts and whatnot). I had the time and resources and experience to do what I do through Rekindled, but every redraw, rewrite, fanfiction, etc. account are making the exact same statement I am, whether intentionally or not - "I do/don't like the canon, but/so here's what I think it would be like if it went like this".
There is definitely plenty of media out there that could be remade, and a lot of them are by the fanfiction writers out there who are filling that niche within their respective fandoms. LO is the one I want to do because it's the one that interests me and compels me the most to rewrite.
Not to mention, it's already a bold statement in and of itself to say that I'm "using Rachel's characters", a statement that likely wouldn't hold up in court LMAO Her "characters" are literally just stylized self-insert versions of public domain figures. She did not write The Hymn to Demeter. She did not create Hades, or Persephone, or Hecate, or any of the other characters she writes about. She does not own an entire religion or its deities. The only thing that she really "owns" is the licensing rights to the name "Lore Olympus", and while the style of LO is very unique and identifiable, you can't trademark/copyright a style because that uproots the entire foundation of what art is (ironically no one has had an original idea SINCE the Greeks, we all just learn and adapt our styles based on other artists that we get inspired by and learn from).
Shit, there are series completely unrelated to LO that get harassed or otherwise warned that they could cross into "legal territory" with LO just because they're Greek myth comics. Punderworld, Theia Mania, H x P Ficlets, all of these are comics that also tackle the H x P myth, and while they aren't attempting to do the same thing as Rekindled (as they exist on their own terms) it's really disappointing when I see people talk about these comics purely through the scope of Lore Olympus as if LO invented Greek myth. If WT/Rachel tried to pull rank over the story's "characters", they'd be picking a fight with every other Greek myth comic, book, movie, etc. and they oughta know that's not a fight they're gonna win lol
So everything beyond LO's branding is, in and of itself, fanfiction. Rekindled is just another level deeper by being fanfiction of a fanfiction. As long as I'm not profiting off Lore Olympus' namesake or distributing my work with the misconception that I created LO, it's legally fine. Morally, I'm sure it doesn't exactly make me a saint to do it, it definitely took a lot of hubris for me to say "yeah I don't like how you wrote your story enough that I felt the need to rewrite it completely" and I wouldn't blame anyone for thinking doing so is icky. There are certain lines I won't cross - I don't use the general LO hashtags because my content is very critical and my work isn't really for the fans, I don't encourage anyone to "show Rachel" what I do here because none of what I do here is obligated to be seen by her (and I know it wouldn't be in her best interest to see it anyways, she's literally said that she doesn't like criticism so why tf would I wanna show her a comic that exists to criticize her work lol), and I'm not planning on posting it to Webtoons because that's Rachel's territory. I don't want to overstep both in the legal sense and in the moral one. I think it's more than enough for me to just post my stuff here for the people who are seeking it, and not profit off it or directly affiliate it with LO/Rachel beyond crediting.
All that said, in a moral and legal sense, what I'm doing is literally the basis of fanfiction, and I wouldn't be going to such lengths and spending this much time every week putting out episodes every week if I never cared about LO and how it made us all feel, even if some of us don't love it as much as we used to.

I decided to reread the 39 clues out of boredom and I saw a couple of your posts in the 39 clues tag and I agree with a lot of what you said. That series had such a hold on me when I was younger and it’s actually been fun to revisit it(even if it’s more chaotic than I remember lol). I also find myself being a lot more interested in the OG founders of the Cahills(Luke, Katherine, etc), because I feel like there’s so much potential for their stories xD
Sorry for taking forever to respond to this! I'm so glad you're loving them during your reread! And YES. The founders have had a death grip on me since forever! I still occasionally wonder about Thomas' must've-been-batshit-insane trip to Japan. Or Katherine in Egypt. And phew. Luke and Jane just live in my head rent free. There's so much to unpack with those two. So much to unpack.
I still think the Interim book between the original series and Vespers is one of my favorite books because we got those snippets of Olivia, Luke's, and Madeleine's characterization.
I'm suddenly wondering if the 39 Clues filled my initial hunger for fucked up family dynamics too, lol. Amy and Dan and the rest of the distant Cahills are fucked up family dynamics on lite mode: Amy and Dan? Tragic. Ian and Natalie? They're neat. The Holts? Supreme fuckery. The Starlings? God, I underappreciated the Starlings. Genius teenage triplets in a power-hungry world-domination clue hunt? That's SO good. I'm not even sure the limit of shit you can unpack with Alistair and Irina's Cold War dead-family baggage. But the OG Cahills? You can't top it. Four genius kids with unique talents who turn on each other after their parent(s) die in a tragic accident they think one of them set? My brain is on fire.
I would reread mine! I had pretty much the full set, but ended up giving my collection away to a friend's daughter. (Absolutely not hoping to make more 39C fans out of a new generation...)

Valicer OT3 Week, Day Three: Childhood Friends
Day Three of @ot3-week's OT3 Week, and we're up to a cute prompt -- "Childhood friends!" So naturally I couldn't resist writing the trio hanging out together as kids. :) This is supposed to be a Victorian!AU, though I suspect it might feel a little bit more modern than that...the important thing is, there's a grand old party happening in the halls of Christchurch at Oxford, and Smiler and Alice have already found each other and decided to sequester themselves away from all these boring adults in their own private table fort. But tummies have started growling, and so Smiler is venturing out to get snacks...
--
“I’m gonna get more snacks!”
“All right – make sure to grab some of Mama’s Welsh rarebit!” Alice said, arranging the cards into neat piles. “Then when you come back we can start building our castle.”
“Definitely,” Smiler said, shooting her a grin. They grabbed the edge of the tablecloth and lifted it – then, seeing no adults had eyes on them, scrambled out from under the banquet table that they and Alice had claimed as their personal hidey-hole. And I thought this party was going to be boring, they thought, scurrying toward the table where the Welsh rarebit sat, along with a few other cheese-based dishes the various attendees were nibbling on. Adults never want to have any fun when they get together – it’s just talk talk talk about boring stuff. Especially Father, going on about “social compliance” and all that...it’s a good thing that Alice is here! I can’t wait to hear another story about Wonderland – it sounds amazing! And I bet that, without the adults interrupting us, we can build a castle using all of the –
“Now, I don’t want you embarrassing me at this party, Victor, do you understand?”
Smiler stopped, turning toward the entrance. Standing there, having their coats taken by the coat-taking-man, was a hunched-over skinny man with a large mustache, leaning on a cane; a very plump woman in the fanciest dress Smiler had ever seen, fanning herself like it was the middle of summer; and a little boy, about Smiler’s age, wearing a suit with shorts and staring at his feet while the woman – presumably his mother – went on and on about how the Liddells were Very Important People and how they had to make a Good First Impression and how Victor was to Stay Quiet and Look Respectable, like the boys in magazines. The boy – Victor – was nodding along to his mother’s litany, trying to stand up straight and do as asked, but the look on his face...
“Now, Marmaduke, I understand that you’re a little – confused, at this age. But the simple fact of the matter is that you can’t just decide that you’re not a boy. It’s simply not done. Where would society be if people just started declaring themselves not one thing or the other? You have to learn how to be socially compliant. True happiness comes from obeying your elders – and you want to be happy, don’t you?”
Smiler frowned as the woman turned away from Victor, leaving him to tug at his tie as she swanned off to chat about boring things with the other adults. It seemed like, with a mother like that, Victor was about to have about as bad a time at this party as they’d feared they would have. And that was a really bad time indeed.
Well, good thing I’m here, then, Smiler thought to themselves, then marched up to Victor, putting on their best smile and sticking out their hand. “Hullo! I’m Smiler!”
Victor nearly started right out of his skin – maybe they should have been a little bit quieter. He stared at them a moment, glancing from their face to their hand and back, then hesitantly took it. “Uh – I’m – I’m – V-Victor,” he stammered, clearly out of his depth. Maybe people didn’t talk to him much? That would be sad if so. “Your name is – Smiler?”
“Well, it’s what I call myself,” Smiler told him, pumping his arm. “My real name’s awful. But Victor’s a nice name! Do you want to play with us?”
“Us?” Victor repeated, blinking.
“Me and Alice!” Smiler pointed at their table, where Alice was peeping out, clearly wondering why snacks were taking so long. They waved to her and pointed to Victor – she glanced over, then nodded and waved back. “She’s really nice, and she tells great stories,” Smiler informed Victor, grinning. “And she’s got cards – we’re gonna try and build a castle! Do you like castles?”
“Uh – yes?” Victor said, as if he wasn’t sure of his own opinions. “I’ve n-never made a card one b-before, though.” He dropped his gaze, playing with his tie again. “I’m k-kind of clumsy.”
“That’s all right – we can show you how to do it!” Smiler promised, taking his hand so he didn’t accidentally strangle himself. “Come on – we’ll get snacks, then we can go and play!”
“I – um...” Victor’s gaze went to his mother, chatting with some other adult Smiler didn’t know and didn’t care about. “I dunno...”
“Aw, come on,” Smiler wheedled, tugging his arm. “It’ll be fun! Don’t you wanna have fun? Be happy? Like, real happy, not grown-up happy?”
“Happy...” Victor looked at his mother a moment more, then over at Alice, patiently waiting for them to decide what they were doing. Then his mouth formed a determined line, and he nodded at Smiler. “Yes. Let’s go make castles.”
Smiler beamed. One happiness problem – solved! Take that, Father. “Great! But, first, we gotta get some of that rarebit – and I think there’s some cake too...”

Shiny New Toy
An alternate, smarter, and most importantly, a funner way to deal with the Leech twins in Book 3.
Warnings: Beyond potential Book 3 spoilers, I really didn't think I'd have to put any warnings down for this fic. But nope, now I need to make it clear that there is a bit, a very small bit, of blood and violence. It's fairly vague, but I still want to make sure people are aware.
A/N: I was brainstorming ideas for the fics I have planned, I named this one, and then it just... unfolded in front of me. Man, I don't even feel like I wrote it. Floyd and Yuu took control of my body and now we all get to bear witness to the results. I'm not even mad, it barely follows my original plan, but the vibes I wanted to convey came across so all in all, success.
Psst. I'm tagging @dandelionwhisp because I know you're coming back soon and I want you to have a present waiting for you, as a reward for surviving such a long flight. Hope you enjoy it!
Something barrelled into the twins, spinning the two eels away from each other. Neither Leech brother had been prepared for the attack, as this came from behind them. Floyd was first to reorientate himself, snapping his attention back to the first years with a furious growl. Whatever was stupid enough to hit him circled his opponents once, twice, and then came to a stop next to the little seal.
It seems as if everyone present paused to assess the newcomer. Well, not exactly new per se, because they were pretty sure that was Yuu. Like, at least 90 percent sure the Ramshackle Prefect had joined the fray.
Grim seems to have thought it would be best to confirm it, just in case.
"Oi! Henchhuman! Is that you? Since when do you have a tail!?"
"You like it?" they asked, giggling despite the tense situation. "I think the colors turned out so pretty." They did a quick twirl in place, letting the sunlight filtering through the coral sea catch on their new bronze scales. They noticed the Leech twins watching them, specifically a certain eelmer's eyes fixated on the reflecting light of their tail. They didn't even try to hide the smug grin that slipped on their face.
Looks like this plan might work after all.
"Oya, what a surprise this is". Jade as always, has a tight lid on his emotions and reactions. The only telling part about him is that sleazy smile he has, the one where his mouth is open just enough to see his razor-sharp teeth.
"Shriiiimmmpppyyy", Floyd whines, an undercurrent of something dangerous in his voice. "Who knew you could be so cute and shiny! Makes me want to give you a big ole squeeze!" His signature sing-song lilt betrays how eerily still he has become. For someone always in motion, fidgeting and shuffling when bored and animated when excited, the merman has become tense in his stillness. Like a coil before it snaps.
Like a predator ready to pounce. He just needs a small push.
"Well I figured if there was a potion that can turn you boys human and give you legs," Yuu begins, nearly simpering, a spark in their eyes that Jade recognizes. "Then there must be a potion that could turn me into a mer and give me fins." The Prefect gives another flick of their new tail, and Jade can see his brother inch a little closer.
Yuu notices the movement as well. They might not have serrated teeth like the eels, or the same malice in their smile as Azul, but even the little group of freshmen agree that the grin they flash Floyd is downright shark-like.
"So if you want to squeeze me, you're gonna have to catch me first".
Before anybody else can react, Yuu swims off, away from the museum, speeding like a bullet shot from a gun. Jade reaches out to stop his brother, but he's only able to graze the end of his tail, Floyd chasing after the Prefect. The calmer twin sighs heavily, moving to follow, but is shocked for the second time today when a magic attack actually manages to hit him.
"Ha! Take that you overgrown sushi! The Great Grim has more of that where it came from!"
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There had been a few close calls already if the superficial scratches near their flukes were anything to go by. For his part, Floyd couldn't decide if this was the most fun he had in a while, or if this was the most frustrating thing he'd done in ages. The Prefect was newer to their fins, a strong swimmer for sure but nowhere near as fast as Floyd. But they were smaller than the natural merman, darting into coral tunnels that he just couldn't fit through. What was supposed to be a straightforward chase has turned into a convoluted game of hide-n-seek.
At least Floyd wasn't the only one laughing in delight.
This was incredibly fun for Yuu. They'd always been comfortable in the water, a strong swimmer naturally. And while they could let loose athletically on land back at NRC, nothing is ever as comfortable and exhilarating as racing through the water. So distracting Floyd had turned into a near cathartic experience, the first time since waking up in this world where they truly felt like they could just be.
Plus, they're pretty sure being a merperson is ticking off some childhood dream checklist.
"Gotcha Shrimpy!" Eventually, Floyd had been able to grab them, causing a startled scream to escape their lips and a manic cackle to escape his. "That was so much fun! But now I can squeeze you as hard and as long as I want since I wo-on"
"Alright" they agree, a little breathless as he begins to wind his tail around them, just tight enough to border discomfort. "That's fair. You did win our game of chase."
"Hahaha!" The eel lets out another series of excited laughs, accompanied by a sharp squeeze. "You're so cute if you thought you could beat me".
Despite wanting this, despite planning every part of this undersea excursion, including letting Floyd capture them, Yuu can't help but stiffen at the feeling of his very sharp, very dangerous, teeth dragging across their neck.
"Jade's always been the patient hunter" Floyd chuckles, reveling in the Prefect's discomfort. "But I've always been more active when catching prey."
One of his clawed hands ghosts down their body to where scales just begin to crop up, the delicate things glinting bronze and copper under his inspection. Suddenly, the human-turned-mer feels a sharp tearing sensation, watching as a small trickle of blood floats into the water surrounding them. Floyd holds up the scale he stole, a lazy smile on his lips and wide, dilated eyes.
"And admittedly Shrimpy, I've always been a sucker for shiny things."
"I thought so. Hey, speaking of Jade, I wonder how many hits the guys have landed on your brother now that he can't rely on your Unique Magic." Floyd stiffens, tightening around Yuu enough to force the air out of their lungs. But then he loosens, more than likely aiming to untangle himself to go help his brother. But the Prefect suddenly latches onto him, winding their arms tight around his body and locking their arms behind his back. Where his tail had uncoiled around them, now that wrap their tail around him, trapping him for just a few minutes longer.
"Poor Jade, abandoned by his brother because you just couldn't resist a new shiny toy." Floyd snarls, gnashing his teeth at the Prefect, but they just laugh, squeezing his tail a little tighter.
"Little Shrimpy tricked you!~ You fell for it hook, line, and sinker."

It’s not an utter emptiness of the air, an absence of thought and emotion, a void that sits where a city should, that has me fighting not to double over at the pain in my gut. It’s not even the writhing, wretched hatred coiling around Lakia’s neck at the sight of the ruins, the sorrow that sticks to Ember’s prone form as they sob, the stone dropping in Andy’s soul that rings through the distance between us as she climbs the cliff--though they might have come close, anywhere else.
It’s the terror that clings to the ashes.
It's the flickering visions of others’ lives and loves disintegrating before their eyes that bleed into the edges of my perception whenever I look at the wall of char. It's the stained glass figures that peek over the cliff of bones, still screaming, still breaking, still so much like the one that cradled me as I felt my sister’s life end.
It’s that no one else sees them.
guess what ya boy's working on on this fine friday

Finally! Enough time to breath and be unhinged over this book! A lot has happened but hopefully I'm back and being consistent now. I'll throw my thoughts on chapters(some more than others) I missed up to the latest!
@journeythroughjourneytothewest
Chapter 11, Burocracy! (the horror)
Emperor Taizong goes to the underworld to explain his case against the 10 kings after promising to save the old dragon but failed too. Promises or giving your word was(and I think still is) a big deal. It's tied to how committed, trustworthy, and reliable you are. It's the intent you give to the other and the strong meaning behind. In some cultures, you can be cursed to a terrible fate if you break it. So Taizong explains his side of the story and the king agreed he tried his humanly best and not in trouble. Which instead of a meeting, this could've been discussed over a letter. The kings tell him he has 13 years left to live, I rather I didn't know but that's just me, and he thanks them. He tours the underworld to see the inter workings and all the men he sent to death or killed. Taizong given a chance to start changing his ways and to save the lost souls who passed before returning to the living. Once the Emperor returns, he makes changes post haste by allowing concubines free and marrying officials, allowing those on death row to visit family and tie up loose ends for one year before their death, and giving offerings to the lost souls so they can pass on. Then he sends Liu Quan to posion himself to offer melons as thanks to the 10 kings.
Chapter 12:
You can't convince me that Liu Quan and the emperor’s sister didn't have something going on. I find it a little to convenient that his wife gets to have the sister's body. Either there was affair or something shady. Anyways, the emperor goes about giving thanks to those who helped him in the living, which leads up to Buddhism being popularize and temples in his name. And our good boy Xuanzang, Child River Float, the man who has many names/titles just like Sun Wukong. He's giving another name, Tripitaka, things and people to help him out his journey to the west.
Chapter 13:
Tripitaka gets kidnapped and watch his men and possibly friends devoured in front of him. The gods are on his side and saves him(literally) from being eaten himself and escapes. He's still in the Tang region and encounters a nice country man who gives him shelter, food, and a guide out of the territory.
Chapter 14:
Tumblr media
Wukong back! And Tripitaka frees him out of the mountain after learning who and what Wukong's crimes are. Tripitaka trust him enough since old monkey didn't lie, HOWEVER!, Wukong the sneaky shit didn't mention how he pissed on Buddha's hand. The monk may have pardoned him not knowing that, but I'll always remember his piss crimes(never forget never forgiven!). After Wukong freed and given +1 tiger skin, the dou are actually pretty sweet and nice to each other. Though it might be the high for Wukong being free again and Tripitaka feeling safe against worldly and otherworldly threats. That all changes one winter day when six bandits attack and Wukong murked them. Then the two argued over it and Wukong leaves. Thankfully not mad enough to make the monk into a meat patty, but I could argue and say Wukong got some time to get to know Tripitaka. The two been traveling more than a few days, enough time to start getting to know each other better and forming a bond. So! With that in mind, Wukong goes back to his mountain but makes a pit stop at the dragon palace(maybe a subtle I'm back) for tea. The old kings catch up and the dragon king reminds Wukong he's been given another chance to be a true immortal and on the path of good. Now pre havoc Wukong wouldn't gives two shits and leaves without a second thought, post havoc Wukong however...does care (a little) and decides to go back. Finally putting his all into this journey, even telling a unhappy Guanyin he's going back. He joins up with Tripitaka.....and gets tricked into wearing the headband. Now don't be mad at our monk cause when he stops Wukong does tries to kill him AND left him defenseless and alone. So the two learn some new things about each other and themselves.
Chapter 15:
Lost a horse and gain a dragon horse after the dragon horse ate the other horse. The boys couldn't do much so they called Guanyin, or Wukong convinced them after some talking.
Chapter 16, 17, and 18
Tumblr media
(go a head and steal the meme. Share it with your friends and the world)
Running theme or joke that Wukong needs Guanyin help to take care of the problems in the way. Especially in chapter 16 after burning down a monastery and having a rather beautiful cassock stolen. But hey! Guanyin gets a free bear to guard her place.
Now for chapter 18! Everyone favorite idiot, Zhu Bajie!
I like the fact the family might have been cool with Bajie if wasn't eating them out of their homes, letting them see their daughter, actually taking care of her(poor girl was so sickly when freed!), and ya know being upfront with what he is and not lying to them. If he was upfront about who he is and showed he's trustworthy then maybe he could've gotten a wife. (I can see a retelling like this, beauty and the beast ess) But know idiot being idiot didn't do any of that and now got a terrifying monkey on his back. Well until Guanyin shows up while he was hiding from Wukong(that is a horror in of itself). Another party member! Whoo! Still no meat for you Bajie. Be bitchless and get bald like the rest of us. (Not me though, I'm just here for the ride like the dragon horse)

Thistle Law
The most extreme, violent interpretation of the Warrior Code, initially founded by Thistleclaw near the end of the Campaign Era, with its first implementation defining the beginning of the Slash-and-Burn Period.
One of three distinct Clan ideologies, next to Fire Alone and Traditionalism.
A guide to its origin, the parable associated with it, its principles, and most importantly, my authorial intentions with it in the Bonefall Rewrite. Seen a couple of questions about it, so I think this’ll help clarify.
Origin
Extreme interpretations of the Code go back as far as the founding of the clans themselves, but the roots of Thistle Law trace back to the Exile of SkyClan. Justifying the loss of an entire clan included cracking down on medicine cats and quashing a rebellion, and the ‘clan pride tide‘ added FOUR new laws to the Warrior Code.
The following wars and conflicts in the Chivalric Period further contributed to xenophobic sentiment in the Clans, with each one vying for supremacy over the others, branching out to attack non-Clan cats when there were brief stints of ‘peace’. Thistleclaw merely gave these ideas a name while educating his apprentice, using thistles as a metaphor.
Tigerclaw then went on to tell the story to his clanmates, to his own apprentices, and at gatherings to his future allies who told it to their own clanmates. Though the details of the story changed at times, the takeaway is constant;
Other cats must die, so yours can stay strong.
The Parable of the Thistle
The story goes that Thistleclaw brought Tigerpaw out to a massive, thorny bull thistle. He pointed out that the other plants were dying around it, but the flowers stood tall and proud. Thistleclaw explained the thistle was killing the plants around it to have more room to grow, and then cruelly commanded that Tigerpaw try to destroy it.
By the time it was done, Tigerpaw was covered in scratches and the sun was setting. All the way home, he tried to shake the thistlefluff out of his fur and forget the painful experience. The seasons turned, and one year later when Tigerclaw was a young warrior, Thistleclaw led him down a path lined with young, thorny leaves.
There, in a sea of green spikes, the thistle was standing as tall and as proud as the day Tigerpaw shredded it.
In killing every other plant in the area, the thistle had given itself room to come back stronger. The fluff that clung to Tigerpaw’s fur became new growth. Around them was an entire clearing of thistles, ready to burst into a wall of flowers and seeds.
Thistleclaw asked if Tigerclaw would dare to try again, and remembering how his last battle with the weed ended with scratches as deep as claw marks, admitted that he would rather be a thistle than fight one.
(Little did Ivypaw know, the beautiful field in which she meets Hawkfrost was completely strangled by flowering thistles.)
Principles
Depending on the exact time period and the cat it takes root in, Thistle Law can look different. For examples, Brokenstar’s goal was to drive every Clan out of the forest except ShadowClan, where Tigerstar’s aim was to annex every clan into TigerClan and enforce a standard of purity.
Incarnations of Thistle Law tend to share these principles,
The Code Hardens The calling card of Thistle Law is a stricter, more violent interpretation of the Warrior Code. The harsher laws are emphasized, such as the Law of Loyalty and the Right of the Challenge, while softer ones are downplayed or dropped entirely, like the Law of Honor and the Queen’s Rights.
Extreme Xenophobia Against outsiders, against cats of other clans, against half-clan cats. Thistle Law sets itself apart from Traditionalism for becoming willing to enforce some sort of purity.
Hierarchy Becomes Rigid The social power of medicine cats, deputies, and elders is suppressed. The leader is raised as the ultimate authority, even if that leader isn’t the Clan’s -star.
There Is No ‘Pointless’ Death The Clans are a battle culture, but a good battle is still fought for a reason. When tides turn to Thistle Law, fighting is the goal AND the means. To live is to battle, to kill is to win, and a warrior’s purpose is to die at war.
Each incarnation likely contains each point in varied amounts and tosses other ideas into the mix, but the name of the game remains the same-- and it springs from the taproot of Thistle Law.
Intentions
Thistle Law is what fascism looks like in Clan culture. I approach this using Umberto Eco’s 1995 essay Ur-Fascism as my primary reference. Ur-fascism is a ‘fuzzy‘ concept that looks very different depending on the exact society it springs from, mixing and matching several symptoms in varying degrees of severity.
So, in adapting this, I had to simplify a very complicated topic. I wanted to keep the antifascist theory recognizable, while still following canon events and creating an engaging rewrite.
So for simplicity sake, even if a clan might have technically called their own version of Thistle Law something else, I use this name to address it.
