your gifs are just beautiful and so vibrant! do you have any tips for beginnings?? my edits/gifs always turn out so pale and grainy :/

Thank you! This started off as a few tips about colouring and then it spiraled into a full-fledged tutorial lmao. So here is a mini tutorial on everything you need to know about gif-making as a beginner:

The basics

This might seem very obvious but half the quality of your gifs will depend on the source you use. Always go for imports that are 720p or 1080p, also try avoiding using videos from youtube, twitter or other websites because they tend to come out a lot grainier than a 1080p download.

The second thing is picking your scene. Some scenes are a nightmare to colour and no matter what you do, it’s always going to turn out grainy.You have to pick scenes that aren’t too saturated with one colour or aren’t too dark, in which case adding a curves or brightness layer will end up making the gif pixelated. The best example I can give for a bad scene is the bar scene in TFA:

It is a nightmare, I’ve been giffing for years and I still avoid this scene like the plague because it’s downright impossible to colour. If you really want to gif a scene like that, my best advice would be making it black and white, otherwise try to pick bright scenes with a lot of colour.

Next is sizing your gif. Tumblr is very particular about the size of gifs/graphics so you need to make sure your gifset is either 540px (1 per line), 268px (2 per line) or 177px (3 per line) anything else will make your image blurry on your dashboard.

The last step before you start colouring is sharpening. Sharpening your gifs is very important because it makes your image clearer and more defined. There are a tonne of really good actions you can find on @yeahps and @chaoticresources along with specified instructions on how to use them. I prefer to sharpen my gifs before I colour them but some people do it after, it really depends on your personal preference and the action you’re using.

2. Colouring

I’m going to be using this gif as an example because it’s pretty bright and relatively easy to colour:

I always start off by adding a curves layer, I like a lot of contrast in my gifs so I always balance the brightness by increasing the black shadows. For a gif like this one, it’s already pretty bright so I don’t need to do too much in terms of messing around with the curves. If your gif is very dark, you can use the set point method which I’ve explained here. Here is what my gif looks like now:

The gif still looks somewhat washed out to me so I like to add a contract layer to make the black tones pop out a little more:

Now that we’ve finished with the base, we can move on to colouring the gif itself. I usually find two or three colours I want to enhance in my gif and work on those, in this case I’m going to focus on the greens, yellows and purples. Using the selective colour tool, go to each tab and start adjusting each colour. For example, I want the background to be more vibrant so I’ll go to the yellows tab and focus on the cyan and yellow sliders. Make sure you don’t change the natural colour too much as that’ll also make your gif grainy. Because we’re dealing with greens/yellows here I’ll focus on the cyan-red and yellow-blue sliders, if we were dealing with purples then I’d mostly use the magenta-green slider and so on.

So going through the same process for all the colours I wanted to adjust, I now have a gif that's a lot more vibrant and colourful:

If you’d like it to be even more bright and vibrant you can add a final vibrance layer. The amount of vibrance you add also depends on the scene you’ve chosen. Some gifs (especially the bright ones) will still look good if you add a lot of vibrance while others will look deep fried.

And now you’re done colouring your gif!

3. Saving

This is pretty straightforward, you just need to save through the ‘Save for Web & Devices’ option and make sure your gif is under 3MB otherwise it’ll freeze. I personally like to add a ‘pattern’ dither, but some people prefer using noise or even no dither, it’s pretty much up to you.

And that it! You now have a bright and vibrant gif that you can upload and post straight away. I do wanna say though that as of right now tumblr has messed up dashboard gifs and has made them grainy so if even after all this your gif still look somewhat grainy when you upload it, it’s most likely due to the newest tumblr update.

Okay I wanted to write something for @strange-capers because ... she’s the nicest and it’s Friday and she writes so many nice things for everyone all the time! 💕 Some college au Steve with a cold, locked out of his dorm, and his cute neighbor Bucky coming to his rescue.

Steve heaves a sigh, sliding down the wall and onto the floor in defeat. His room key was definitely and most unhelpfully, still inside his room. He could picture it, on his bedside table, right where he’d left it in his bleary, half-asleep haze that morning. He’d been so focused on downing cold medicine and shoving what he hoped was enough tissues into his backpack that he’d scrambled out the door without it.

The rest of the day had followed in a similar fashion: hurrying from class to class, barely able to keep his eyes open once he dropped into the nearest open seat. There was nothing worse than going to class with a cold. Steve was well aware that everyone around him was looking at him dubiously, wondering why he was there spreading his germs instead of home in bed. The answer, he would have told them, had anyone actually asked, was because he had to pick his skipped class days wisely. He was sick all the time, and if he missed class every one of those times he’d be failing.

So he sat through the lectures, eyes tearing as he tried to fight back the itchy sneezes that were torturing his nose. Steve knew he must be a sight: his eyes streaming, nose red and twitchy, mouth slightly open. Not that it gave him much relief when he finally did let a few stuffy-sounding sneezes go. He did his best to muffle them in a handful of crumpled tissues, leaning forward as discreetly as he could when the soft, half-stifled Hehh-eshh! Heh-hngx! Mmpshh! sneezes inevitably burst forth, only for the process to start all over again.

And then, just when he would start to get everything under control, maybe going a full half hour without sneezing, it would be time for his next class, or he’d be starving, and he would have to go back outside and cross the freezing campus. His nose was always sensitive, but it was doubly so when he was sick like this. He’d reach his destination more sniffly than before, always just shy of sneezing again. Which was how his tissues, so carefully packed, had run out so quickly.

Wednesday was his longest day of the week, and needless to say, Steve had spent most of it daydreaming about getting back into bed. Which now, wouldn’t be until who knows when.

He sniffles a little, rubbing at his nose, and pulls out his phone. It wasn’t even six, and it was Tony’s late night at the lab; he wouldn’t be home for a least a few hours. Which meant Steve could sit out here and wait, or go to the library and try and get some work done, but… Neither of those appealed to him right now.

As Steve contemplates his options, he feels a prickling in his sinuses and brings a hand up to rub at his nose. He really didn’t want to get stuck sneezing out here without tissues; he was sure he looked pathetic enough as it was. But because that’s the kind of luck he has, the itch builds impossibly fast and he has no choice but to lean into his elbow as the sneezes hit him. “Ehh-ITSHH! HupTishhIEW! ISH! Snf!”

Sitting there on the ground was looking better by the minute. He’s sitting there sniffling helplessly afterwards when he hears a door open.

“Bless you!” A voice above him interrupts his pity party and Steve blinks up at the person, only to feel his face flush. “It’s Steve, right? Tony’s roommate? I’m Bucky, I don’t know if we’ve ever actually met…”

Steve knows exactly who he is, and why they haven’t met. Because he’s had an insane crush on him for months, and could never manage more than a nod and a flustered smile before darting back into his room or down the hall. Tony always tried to get them all together, insisting that Steve and Bucky would get along great, but Steve always brushed it off, or found a reason not to. So of course here he was, when Steve was looking his worst. Not exactly a meet cute.

“Yeah, Steve, and thanks,” he says quietly, sniffling again and hoping his nose isn’t too red at this point.

“You don’t sound so great. What are you doing, uh, down there?” Bucky asks, a lopsided smile making breaking out across his face.

“Forgot my key this morning. Tony won’t be back for a while and I don’t want to go to the lounge like heh-ETSH! Sorry, bless me, like this,” Steve explains, desperate at this point for more tissues, for Bucky to never have come out, or a do-over on this entire day, really.

“Bless you again. You can come hangout in here until Tony gets back,” Bucky hooks a thumb over his shoulder at his dorm. “I was just going to grab my laundry, but you can go ahead in. I’ll be right back.” He smiles at him again and Steve feels his stomach sink to his feet. Of course he’s this nice and this attractive, because his life wasn’t fair.

Steve picks up his bag and goes into Bucky’s room, because it was better than the floor, and yeah, okay, he was curious. It was surprisingly neat, much cleaner than his and Tony’s room, and he had the benefit of having a single. Convenient. The thought hits Steve out of nowhere and his face burns despite no one being around to see it. Get a grip, Rogers.

Bucky comes back and hands him the box of tissues from his dresser, and Steve gives him a thankful smile, grabbing a few and pressing his nose into them carefully. Bucky makes easy conversation, asking about his major, his friends, what he liked to watch. They put the TV on quietly as background noise, and as they sit there, Steve realizes Bucky is surprisingly easy to talk to. He doesn’t even seem to mind that, much to Steve’s embarrassment, most of his sentences are punctuated by sneezing.

He’d managed to lose track of time when Bucky looks at his phone and informs him that Tony was on his way back from class. Steve realizes with a pang he doesn’t want Tony to be back just yet. Who knew the next time they’d get this opportunity. Sure, they were neighbors, but it had taken them this long to even meet. He was promising himself he wouldn’t dart in the opposite direction anymore when Bucky clears his throat.

“Hey, why don’t you give me your number? I have Tony’s, but uh, in case you get stranded again, I’m usually around…” Bucky trails off and his mouth quirks up nervously at the corner again. Steve resists the urge to smile moronically at him. It could be his imagination, but he was pretty sure Bucky was turning a little red.

Maybe this day had potential after all.

When you woke up you were all sweaty and your throat was dry and hurt when you tried to speak. Steve instantly knew you had more than a fever and he got proved right when you puked all over yourself and the bed and was trying to calm you down.

"It's okay, angel, it happens" Steve assured you and rubbed your back. "Let's get you in a nice bath, then we can go watch a movie yeah?"

After a warm bubble bath, he got you dressed in fresh pj's and moved you to the living room. He and Bucky were preparing lunch, while you were watching some cartoons until Peter jumped on the couch beside you.

"Hey tiny! You wanna come an pway wif me?" he asked excitedly and was jumping up and down, making you whine. "You hab been watchin cartoons all day. Is boring"

You started to cough and it was making your headache only worse. Bucky and Steve heard your coughing fit and got to the living room, seeing Peter jumping around you.

"Peter, please come here for a second" Bucky waved him over and he quickly got off the couch, while Steve sat down next to you. "Our little Angel here is very sick and isn't feeling very well"

"Maybe pwaying will cheer her up!" he wanted to run away to get toys, but Bucky caught his arm stopping him.

"No, that's not what I- Peter!" he couldn't even finish before Peter got out of his hold and run out to your playroom.

Bucky got after him and you watched the whole scenario, feeling guilty for making Peter upset.

"Dada?" you wheezed and Steve held your bottle for you.

"Here drink something, it's good for your sore throat" he smiled and you looked to the door where Peter and Bucky disappeared through. "You're too sick to play and it's a bit hard for him to understand"

You nod and started to gulp down the warm milk, slowly falling asleep while watching your cartoon.

The three boys ate alone lunch together since you were passed out on the couch. Steve and Bucky were looking at Peter from time to time. He didn't say anything, just quietly eating his pasta.

"Hey Pete, how about we color a bit after lunch?" Steve tried to light up his mood, but Peter only shook his head pushing his plate away, signaling them he was done. "Oh, okay, you can stand up if you want"

Peter didn't need to be told twice and got up, leaving the room with two concerned soldiers. They were cleaning up the kitchen when they heard your whimpers and immediately rushed to see what was wrong.

They stopped by the door and smiled at each other when they saw Peter carefully climbing to your side of the couch, slipping under the blanket next to you and pulling you in his arms.

"s otay, tiny, you not awone" he whispered and you snuggled further into him and let out a content sigh.

"While they are occupied here..." Bucky ran his hand down Steve's back. "We could play for some time"

"When he's sleeping" Steve smirked and snapped a picture of you and Peter all cuddled up.
