it was barely midday, yet it had already been a more than eventful day at the campsite. everyone seemed on edge and rightfully so, people were at each other's throats. y/n had the unfortunate luck of getting stuck in the crossfire of all the chaos.

"you've caught us at a bad time, i promise it's not always like this," lori sighed, rubbing a hand over her face in frustration, "we're grateful for the food you brought.. with daryl."

"that's a shame," y/n leaned against a cushion in the back seat of the rv, a smug look on her face, "seems fun here."

lori blinked at the girl, slightly puzzled by her. fun? the world was ending and society as everyone knew it had collapsed and this little girl thinks it's fun? lori nods, deciding to look past her comments, "okay.. dale told me your name's y/n, is that right?"

"mhm," y/n hummed in response, getting comfortable on the cushions, "man, this is way better than sleepin' on a tree."

"you've been sleeping.. in trees?" lori asked, "how long have you been on your own?"

y/n shut her eyes, resting her arms behind her head, getting comfortable in the back of the rv, "the biters can't get ya up there."

lori hummed in acknowledgment, y/n was a smart kid and lori could see that, "can i ask you about your family?"

y/n opened her eyes and stared at lori for a few seconds before responding, "how 'bout you ask me one question and then i get to ask you a question."

lori laughed, "seems only fair, fine then... where's your parents?"

"my dad's in atlanta probably with his buddies or somethin' by now, but i left 'im to go to my mom, she's in the countryside and i've been making my way there."

lori furrowed her eyebrows at the mention of atlanta, "honey... atlanta was bombed.. there's nothin' left there."

y/n squinted her eyes at lori, "you sure?"

"i'm so sorry.." lori gulped, "my son and i were headed to atlanta when this all happened, we never got close since the highway was so packed... then there were bombs. they bombed the entire city, i'm sorry honey."

y/n nodded, taking in the information and let out a sigh, "hm. that's a shame."

"guessin' you didn't have a great home life then?" lori frowned at the girl.

"hey? we agreed only one question, s'my turn now," y/n shot a pointed look at lori, "rick.. your husband?"

"he is," her face fell slightly at the mention of him, he was currently getting ready to go on a rescue mission for a piece of shit, "my turn... let's see... what is... your favourite colour?"

lori raises an eyebrow at the girl with a wide smile on her face. she knew not to touch the subject of her family again and decided to keep the questions lighthearted.

"seriously?" y/n scoffed, "that's your question?"

lori feigned offense at her response and scoffed back at the girl, "well excuse me little miss, you said i could ask anythin' i wanted and right now i'm dyin' to know what your favourite colour is."

y/n chuckled at the woman's enthusiasm, the slight increase in her southern drawl brought a smile to y/n's face. she rolls her eyes at lori, her mouth scrunching up to the side to hide her smile, "i dunno, probably green?"

"guessin' you've been seeing a lot of it nowadays," lori nodded, a soft smile on her face. the kind of smile that only a mother was capable of, it made y/n feel warm seeing it.

"what's daryl's deal?" y/n questions, her face scrunching up at the thought of the man, "seems like an asshole."

"hey, watch your mouth." lori points a finger at the girl.

"sorry, ma'am." the girl's manners were a surprise to lori, she hadn't expected it. y/n was plenty sarcastic and seemed pretty guarded, but she could also be polite and respectful. it confused lori, but she just assumed that y/n's parents were strict on manners.

"it's alright, hon," lori smiled at the girl.

"so what's his deal?" y/n repeats her question, tilting her head, "how do you people know each other?"

"well.. we don't really know each other all that well. shane, rick and my son are the only one's i know from.. well, before." lori explains, fidgeting with the necklace around her neck, "most of us met on the highway, we were all stuck there for a while and eventually we ended up here... as for daryl, no one really knows much about 'im, but he provides for the group, so none of us can complain."

"what about his brother?"

"it's my turn to ask a question," lori chuckles as y/n frowns at her, "how old are you?"

"i'm twelve."

"you're the same age as my son," lori smiles, "and another girl here, carol's daughter."

"cool.." y/n pauses to think of her next question, "what's one thing you miss from before?"

lori chuckled, a few things coming to mind, "oh wow, it'd have to be my phone, i miss texting my friends.. askin' when the next book club was gonna be... probably sounds boring to you, huh?"

y/n smiled at the woman and shook her head, "no ma'am, my mom was the leader of her book club, serious business."

"well, maybe me and your mom could start our own new book club," lori smiled back at y/n. she had to admit that the girl was nice to talk to when she let her guard down and dropped the sarcasm. lori had been given the job of figuring out what y/n's 'deal' was - whatever shane meant by that.

"she always tried to get me to join her meetings," y/n stared at her hands, as she fidgeted nervously, "i used to hate it. i struggle with readin' so.. never liked it, but now i wish i went with 'er more."

lori smiles sadly at the girl, offering a reassuring pat to her shoulder, "i know it may not be the same, but dale's got some books, we could read together one day, until you find your mom that is."

y/n looked up at lori and chuckled, "tryin' to get me to join a book club?"

lori laughs and shakes her head, "can't blame a gal for trying, can you?"

before y/n could respond, the rv door opened and shane stepped inside, "hey.. how's it goin' in here, everything okay?"

"just talking about starting a book club, weren't we y/n?" lori looked at y/n with a smile.

"yes ma'am." y/n nods, her eyes watching shane carefully as he stands by the door. something about him rubbed y/n the wrong way, it was an unexplainable feeling - just something in her gut.

shane nodded back, "okay then, rick's about to leave if you wanna speak with him."

"you gonna be okay for a few minutes, hon?" lori asked y/n, her face scrunched up in concern.

"yes ma'am."

"okay," lori nodded, she didn't take the girl's sudden switch in attitude personally. the two may have been joking and swapping stories previously, but lori understood that y/n may be on guard around people she hadn't yet spoken with, or maybe she was just shy. she was an interesting character to say the least - one she hoped would stick around.

lori left the rv, but shane stayed inside, watching y/n. he had already said his piece to rick, so he had no need to leave.

"y/n, right?" shane raises an eyebrow at the girl, taking a few steps closer to her. the floor of the rv creaks ever so slightly under him.

"yes sir." y/n crossed her arms over her chest, staring back at him intensely, trying to read the man.

"sir?" shane chuckles, running a hand through his hair, "ain't you polite?"

"i can be." y/n hisses.

"okay, okay, i get it, you don't know me so you're a little on edge, i get it," he raised his hands up to show he meant no harm, "just have a few questions for you s'all."

y/n stayed quiet for a few seconds and nodded to tell him to ask his questions.

"you on your own out there?" shane leaned against the door to the toilet, his body blocking the walkway that led to the exit. she knew he did it on purpose, but she hadn't intended on running out anyways, "ain't got no folks out there waiting on you?"

"i'm alone."

he hummed in response, impressed with the fact she had survived, "where's your folks at?"

y/n rolled her eyes and turned to face the window across from her, "is that all you people are gonna ask about?"

shane scoffed, rubbing a hand through his hair, "well excuse me for being curious why a kid's runnin' wild 'round the woods alone like some kid raised by wolves."

"y'know, curiosity killed the cat." y/n turned back to look at shane, shrugging her shoulders.

"how'd you survive out there?" he ignored her previous statement, not wanting to entertain a threat from a little girl.

"slept in places biters couldn't get me. places people wouldn't be lookin'."

"hm. that's smart." shane nodded, "you goin' back to the woods, or you gonna stay here?"

y/n raised an eyebrow, somewhat surprised that her staying at the camp was even on the table at all, "stay?"

"the others are thankful for the food you 'n daryl brought back," shane paused, readjusting his stance to face y/n, "you know how to survive, you're resourceful. that much's obvious. we could use someone like you. besides, i ain't gonna send a kid away."

y/n squinted at the man, looking at the way he held himself. she rolls her eyes at him and asks a question that shane didn't expect, "you a cop?"

shane squinted at y/n, his head tilting to the side, "how'd you guess?"

"the way you're talkin' n' the way you carry yourself," y/n shrugged, she could have guessed with her eyes closed that the man was a cop, she had seen a fair few of them around her father growing up, "i was thinking military earlier, but that chokehold ya had on daryl seemed like you've been wantin' do that for a while.. now you can since the law don't mean nothing now."

shane laughed, "you got some brain in that head of yours."

"ain't got no time to be stupid."

"so you wanna stay or not?" shane repeated his earlier question, "you're free to leave any time."

y/n looked at her hands for a few seconds, debating whether or not she wanted to stay, "might as well, i caught those damn squirrels, it'd be a shame to not eat."

"watch your mouth." shane raises an eyebrow at her language.

"yes sir."

"no need to call me sir, this ain't nazi germany. shane's just fine," shane laughs, shaking his head slightly, "now c'mon out, meet some of the folks here, we won't bite."

y/n let's out a deep sigh. she knew that she'd have to meet the other people, but with how on edge everyone has been since her arrival, despite her not being the cause of the camp's anxiety, she'd rather not talk to any of them.

"hey there again," dale smiled at y/n, crossing his arms over his chest, "what're you up to now?"

"i'm supposed to meet the people at the camp. shane said i should and decide whether i want to stay or not." y/n surveys the campsite whilst explaining her plans to dale, scouting the people she'd have to talk to.

"well are ya gonna stay for dinner at least?" from what dale gathered, y/n was on her own in the woods and he didn't feel right sending a child back out there. not after what he had seen.

"duh," y/n rolled her eyes, "i caught more than half of that, i ain't letting y'all rob me."

dale laughed in response, amused at her words, "well, let me take you to meet everyone then, huh? i'll make sure each conversation is nice and short so you're not stuck listening to people go on and on."

y/n let out an exasperated sigh and rolled her eyes again, "fine, but if i poke your side it means i wanna stop chattin'."

"just pat my arm, no need to poke me kiddo."

"she doesn't act like she's a child. she definitely doesn't act her age at least.." lori muttered, staring at the newest addition to the group from afar. y/n had been sat talking with carl and sophia for a while, so lori kept a watchful eye - she trusted the girl enough to be around her son and she trusted the people at the camp, but she couldn't be too trustful. something about the girl didn't seem right, "it's just the start of all this mess and she's already more mature than she should be..."

"maybe that's a good thing," shane shrugged, "the world's changed, kids gotta toughen up now."

lori let out a sigh, shaking her head, "you don't get what i'm sayin' shane. she's the same age as carl for crying out loud. if she's grown up that fast, it's only a matter of time before carl stops being a kid too," lori brushed her hair out of her face anxiously, "this can't be the world, kids need to be kids, families shouldn't be broken apart- hell, kids shouldn't be armed with weapons, she should barely know how to use a knife like that."

shane rolled his eyes and sighed, "i get it, you don't want your boy to grow up too fast, but it's not a bad thing she knows what she's doin'. could be an asset to us, you seen the haul she 'n daryl got together? we'd never go hungry lori. carl won't go hungry."

lori nodded, acknowledging y/n's skills, "you're right, but i still feel sorry for her, she's clearly on edge around this many people... don't know what she's been through, but it doesn't seem like anything good."

"so... d'ya talk with rick?" shane's arms tensed at his own question.

"we talked," lori nodded, "shane. you have to understand that what we were doing is over. you told me my husband was dead, i didn't know any better."

shane clenched his jaw, tilting his head to the side to pretend he was watching the other people at the camp, "i thought he was dead, okay? i wouldn't lie about that, not rick."

y/n glanced over at lori and shane sat on a log speaking in hushed voices, but she could tell by their body language that neither of the two were happy, or comfortable.

"what's that guy's problem?" y/n gestured over at shane.

"oh, that's shane. he's my dad's friend," carl shrugged, "he saved me and my mom, he's cool."

"seems intense," y/n muttered, looking over at sophia, who just silently fidgeted with her fingers, "you okay?"

sophia looked up from her hands and nodded, a polite smile on her face, "yes.. thank you."

"sophia's not really good with new people, she's shy," carl explained, "there's a few other kids at the camp, but they're with their family right now."

"cool," y/n nodded, wondering when dale was going to return from his bathroom break to relieve her from the awkward conversation with the two kids.

"how did you survive on your own? it's none of my business, but my mom said you were out there alone.. is that true?" sophia asked, her voice meek and cautious, y/n recognised the voice as the one she'd used around her father. instantly y/n had figured sophia out, y/n knew she could trust her.

"started hunting and tracking when i was first able to, i've been doin' that to avoid people and catch dinner," y/n shrugged and readjusted the way she was sat. she sat with her legs crossed on the dirt, the position reminding her of her time at school.

"you were on your own?" carl asks, his eyes wide with amazement.

"yeah."

"that's awesome!" carl grins, admiring y/n's ability to survive on her own.

"awesome?" y/n questioned, frowning at the boy, "you really think that's awesome?"

"uh- i mean... yeah?"

y/n scoffs at carl, her eyebrows furrowing together in frustration at his naivety, "really? awesome? if you had been out there by yourself, you wouldn't think it was awesome. people die out there."

"well, you didn't?" carl responds, unsure why y/n seemed so irritated, he meant what he said as a compliment.

"that's 'cause i know what i'm doing, but i stand just as much a chance as everyone else out there." y/n crosses her arms over her chest, looking back at the rv to see if dale was back yet. he sure was taking his damn time.

"i think you have a better chance than most people.." sophia smiles shyly at y/n. y/n seemed unpredictable and sophia was slightly intimidated by her, but sophia was hopeful that she'd win y/n over and gain a new friend.

"yeah! you can hunt and stuff and you have a bow." carl nods in agreement with sophia. he admired y/n. she was the same age as him, yet she knew things that he didn't. he could learn a lot about survival from y/n if she stayed.

"i've seen people get shot for no reason other than being in the wrong place at the wrong time. i've seen biters tear people's limbs and organs apart. nothing about anything that's happened is awesome. you have to take this shit seriously, or you die. got it?" y/n talks with a serious tone, but keeps her voice down to avoid adults overhearing her.

carl and sophia both share an uneasy look after listening to what y/n said and they both aren't sure how to respond. they're silent, horrified by the thought of what y/n had seen, but luckily dale was back to relieve them from the unnerving conversation.

"hey carl, sophia," dale smiles at the other two children, "i see you've met y/n."

dale takes note of the expressions on carl and sophia's faces. they seem distraught, but they nod in response to dale.

"hey kid," dale taps y/n on the shoulder, "there's something i need your opinion on, follow me?"

y/n nods and stands up from the ground, grateful to have an excuse to leave carl and sophia. she follows dale into the rv and he sits down in the booth, gesturing to the seat across for him for y/n to sit down.

"what happened out there?" dale asks, raising an eyebrow at y/n, "they looked a bit pale, did you.. say something?"

y/n realises that dale didn't need her opinion on anything and she sighs, shrugging her shoulders, "i just told 'em what they needed to hear."

dale's face holds an unamused expression as he looks over at y/n, leaning his arms on the table that separates them, "i know you've probably seen a lot out there during your time alone, but carl and sophia haven't.. you might want to be a little.. sensitive."

"sensitive?" y/n's face scrunches up in disagreement, "i'm just tellin' them how it is. sheltering them does nothing. if anything, it'll just get 'em killed faster."

dale sighs at y/n's response, "what i'm trying to say is that you might scare them."

"good. they should be scared. everyone here should be scared, this ain't some game or family camping trip," y/n scoffs, leaning back in her seat.

before dale could respond to y/n, the rv door opens and lori walks inside.

great. y/n thinks to herself. those little shits ratted on me.

"hey dale, could you give us a minute?" lori smiles at the older man as he leaves the rv. dale was slightly relieved that lori wanted to speak with y/n, he hoped that she would have better luck getting through to y/n.

"hey y/n." lori takes a seat where dale previously was sitting, "how are you liking the camp so far? i hope everyone's been nice to you so far."

"cut to the chase," y/n rolls her eyes, "i know carl ratted me out."

"he didn't rat you out, he's just worried about you," lori smiles nervously at y/n, there really was no beating around the bush with this girl, "apparently you said some things that made him and sophia concerned?"

"they're the ones that said me being on my own was 'awesome'. i was just trying to tell them they were wrong and they shouldn't say stuff like that."

"well, they both are sorry that they upset you, they didn't mean to be insensitive to you," lori pauses, nervously chewing on her lip, "in the future, please don't say things like that to them.. i don't want them to be too scared to sleep.. it's been hard enough recently."

y/n thinks about the countless sleepless nights she's had, the long nights where she feared for her life. oh, but she wouldn't want carl and sophia to struggle with getting to sleep.

"yeah, whatever." y/n was done with the conversation at that point. she had nothing else to say. she did partially feel guilty for saying those things to carl and sophia, it was a little harsh and after all they just wanted to befriend her.

"squirrel's ready to eat, some of the others were cooking whilst rick and the rest left," lori turned towards the door and looked back at y/n, "c'mon before it's all gone."

y/n didn't respond, but she nodded at lori before following her out of the rv.

lori could tell that y/n's demeanor had changed, she was much quieter, but definitely more alert. she observed, or at least that's what y/n had been doing whilst they ate - not once did y/n's eyes stop watching the other people around her.

"you don't have to be on guard here, you know that right?" lori whispered, rubbing y/n's back softly. y/n flinched from the touch, but didn't push her away. lori takes note of how y/n's body stiffens at her touch and takes note of it, her reaction confirming the thoughts lori had been having about y/n and her life before.

"you always gotta be alert," y/n shrugged, staring at ed with a frown on her face, "you figure people out faster that way."

"figure out people? what do you mean?" lori's face scrunched up in confusion.

"my dad was a lot like ed," y/n looked up at lori, "i'm guessing that's sophia's dad."

"y'know, you could've been a really good detective." lori complimented her, "what were the clues?"

"i figured carol was her mother, i saw carol and ed together - my mom and dad were like them before they split up..." y/n sighed, "i was like sophia when i was younger."

"she's your age, y/n?" lori chuckled.

"i know, but i..." y/n rolled her eyes at her own words and sighed, "i don't know what i'm saying forget about it."

"i know we just met, but there's not many other people around nowadays, so we'll have plenty of time to get to know each other, if you do stay that is", lori shrugged, attempting to make y/n feel like she had a choice whether she left or not, though lori wasn't so keen on letting a child leave a safe place with adults. lori didn't want y/n to feel caged in, "you can talk to me whenever you want about anything you want, okay hun?"

y/n nodded and went back to people watching, "this fire should be put out soon, you keep it up any longer biters will show up, or people."

lori nodded and passed the information onto shane. y/n remained at the fireplace, watching people like she had been doing before.

sophia slipped away from her mother's side and sat down next to y/n in front of the fire, "hi again.."

y/n glanced at sophia from the corners of her eyes, "hi."

"i'm sorry about carl..." she sighs, "it's been so long since there was a new kid at the camp, we were just happy..."

y/n smiles a little, trying to reassure sophia. the last thing y/n wanted was to make her feel like she did anything wrong, "it's okay sophia."

"no problem..." she smiled back nervously, "you must be pretty brave though, right?"

y/n frowned at sophia and tilted her head to the side, "no. i hid the entire time i was on my own. that's not brave."

sophia shook her head and smiled, "if i was on my own, i don't think i'd survive."

"you would," y/n replied almost a little too quickly, "don't say that."

"i guess being on your own makes you a pretty good liar too, huh?" sophia giggles, making y/n laugh.

"shut up, i'm serious."

"i'm glad there's a girl my age here now.. i was getting bored of just talking to carl," sophia whispered, "we're going to have so much fun."

y/n smiled at sophia, she didn't get mad by her words like she had at carl earlier. she figured the two hadn't seen anything yet. never saw a man get torn apart in front of them. never seen another kid get shot point blank. none of it. they had been shielded from it all and as much as she felt it was unfair, she didn't want to be the one to ruin their outlook on life. they still had hope. she wasn't going to take that away from them.

who knows, maybe y/n could allow herself to be a kid for just a bit longer. there were a few capable people at camp that could protect her. maybe she could allow herself to befriend sophia.

"yeah.. can't wait."

I feel like you guys could go on a couple different dates depending on what you like. His favourite kind of dates would be anything including outdoor physical activity, swimming on the beach, (indoor) rock climbing, bungee jumping, mini road trips (would have his license) even just a simple walk along the forest. If you aren’t as adventurous as him but are still willing to try it out just cause he likes it, he would be so appreciative of you and you guys would have literally so much fun. Other dates are simply watching tv shows together, going to fun 3d picture museums, shopping at the mall. He’s also willing to try anything you want to try and go to any place you want to visit. He's literally perfect i love him so much but he's dead so

i don’t feel like she’s the type of person to want to go on dates specifically (she wouldn't label it as a date), but you guys hang out often at each other’s places and that's enough for her personally, but in case you do want to go out somewhere special she probably will agree. if it was up to her she’d take you to her favourite river or a lake and you guys could sit on the pier and just talk about life, doubling over with laughter whenever either of you cracks a funny joke. that’s her type of date. but again she's up for anything else as long as its with you <3 would definitely take you to her favourite thrift shop and you guys could get cute matching couple outfits. In case you guys go anywhere picturesque she’s the BEST photographer, knows all the angles and all the poses, super still hands when she takes the photos and none of them are ever less than flawless.

𝐋𝐎'𝐀𝐊

you guys would definitely go to the movies (works there part time and uses his worker privileges to get free popcorn and drinks), arcade, skateboarding park, roller skate park, literally anything and everything fun. also enjoys staying in and laying in bed together just scrolling on tiktok (and making tiktoks with each other). during these dates he would take photos of you and post it on his secret instagram account titled mypookiey/n that kiri, teyam, aonung, rotxo and you follow (reya not included cause I feel like if he didn’t like tsireya romantically he’d be kinda shy to talk to her since she’s like the popular girl and he considers himself an outcast). you guys record music covers together and he loves editing them cause he loves hearing your voice (gets so giddy inside, totally has a shy small smile on his face when u sing he's so cute AGHHHH)

𝐀𝐎'𝐍𝐔𝐍𝐆

amusement park dates WOOO you’d both have so much fun. riding roller coasters, playing the mini games, going into the photo booths, buying cotton candy, couple selfies on the ferris wheel, never a dull moment with this guy. If he sees a giant teddy bear as a prize for a minigame he would get you it in one try. often invites you to be front row at his basketball games and in case you’re interested in learning he would not hesitate to teach you the best he could (would also mock you for not being as good as him). He holds your hand everywhere (in case ur not good with PDA he wouldn’t but i think we can all agree his love language is physical touch so….would be a very hard time for him). In case you’re struggling with maths he would definitely tutor you, you could kinda consider that a date??? I guess????

𝐑𝐎𝐓𝐗𝐎

cafe, library, studying dates. that and also you both go to the mall together. He’s very funny and can make a joke out of anything, any “boring” date he can turn right around. Since he’s good with his words definitely tries to embarrass you in public by reading out a poem dedicated to you that he made on the spot, earning a smack on the back of the head from you. He also does this thing where he takes you to check out the toy sections in shops and you both make fun of the price together because what the hell why is a little pony plushie like 25 bucks?? he also loves taking couple photos together

𝐓𝐒𝐈𝐑𝐄𝐘𝐀

you guys eat together, go to cute cafes, picnics in the park, also enjoy laying in bed and scrolling through tik tok together. window shopping is a must, always tries out cute outfits and asks you for your opinion on them, and also fixes together pieces for you to wear. you guys do cute ass stuff like interlocking pinkies and then taking photos of said pinkies and posting it on your stories. dog cafes, cat cafes, and bird cafes are also great. also loves doing sleepovers, always insists on sleeping in a sleeping bag no matter if a bed is available or not because it's part of the fun. she will also do your skincare with or without you asking.

OOH idk man i’m shit at head cannons ALSO THIS WAS SAT IN MY DRAFTS FOR AGES IM SO SORRY I THOUGHT I POSTED IT

- well in my mind i always read him with a northern english accent and i’m not sure why. i know he’s from kent like Rowan + Jimmy but he just gives off northern vibes idk. and after learning that his dads scottish i can also see him using lots of Scottish slang terms.

- i think he’s a slag for a bit of pop too. Britney, Ariana, Taylor, Reneé, you name it. he gets a bit embarrassed though so he turns off his AirBuds when he wants to listen to girly pop music. he has the widest music taste out of the ark, so his Spotify wrapped is always mental. he posts them every year and not once has the same song appeared in his top listened to

- ik he’s not like blonde blonde but i think his natural hair is a lot darker but he’s been dying it blonder since he first met Jimmy and Rowan. when the ark are on hiatus he lets it grow out to his natural colour for a bit.

- he tried to grow a stache one time but Rowan shaved it while he slept. Also he didn’t know how to shave when he first met Jimmy and Rowan, so Pierro taught him. Pierro also taught him how to tie a real tie rather than use a clip on one.

- Joan LOVED lister. she would always fuss over him when he would come over. When he’d come round he would help her in the garden, but really he was terrible and Joan would always have to fix his mistakes. when he told her about how he and his mum would listen to albums together when he was little, she began showing him her collection of old records from when she was a teen/young adult. when she died she left Lister a few of his favourites. Lister keeps them hidden at all times so when he was hosting parties there was no chance they’d get damaged. after they stopped having so many people over Lister kept them displayed in the living room.

- i think that before he and Jimmy got together he had healthy and fun relationship with someone unrelated. it’s not anything ridiculously serious but it helps him see what he should realistically be looking for and what he deserves. it’s not like he’s using the person though, and he actually really likes them. they eventually end things amicably though, and stay good friends.

- it says on the WIKI article alice wrote for him that he has three half siblings. as far as i can think there’s no canon information about them other than that, so i like to HC that they are all from his dads second marriage and they don’t talk much since Lister hasn’t been to visit his dad in years. the ages are;

1.) Lister (19-20)

2.) a sister who’s like 17ish, she’s super embarrassed about the whole ark thing and is reluctant to rebuild a relationship with him again when he reaches out to her post IWBFT, because she remembers how he used to constantly fight with their dad when he’d come over for christmas / two weeks in the summer holidays. when they do start to reconnect and get closer she helps him bond with their dad too. (maybe she’s called Maya?)

3.) a younger brother who’s 13ish and a total TWAT. they look really similar and he’s just like how Lister was in school but he’s hilarious and really admires Lister. somehow he’s stupid smart though, even if he’s class clown. i think he reaches out to Lister when he’s still in the hospital after the incident. i also think it would be funny if the younger brother’s celebrity crush was Jimmy but his image of jimmy is completely shattered when he meets him properly. (i call him Brodie in my head)

4.) his youngest sister who’s like 7 who barely remembers lister but once they get closer she has him wrapped around her little finger. he almost bought her a horse once but Jimmy and Rowan had to remind him that a 7 year old who lives in a city centre can not logistically look after a whole horse. (i think her names Eilidh)

- the ark move from the flat into a house just outside london and he makes sure they all have a room so they can visit whenever they want to.

- after getting to know them better, he gets really close with Angel and Juliet. the three of them and Bliss have “girls” nights in the arks flat. when Listers hair grows they teach him how to pleat it. he gets really good and when he starts seeing his half siblings again he pleats his sisters hair for them)

he is a cool anime-loving ranger teen 😎😎😱😎😎😎😎 and you probably already know this but he is from the podcast dungeons and daddies aka dndads and he is my. fave little guy

he's the kind of character who has an absolutely stupid amount of unearned confidence and is always SO incredibly sure of himself no matter how fucking stupid the things he does are and it's great and hes a fucking weeb too and he's always comparing the adventures the main cast gets into to the anime he's watched and while the other teens r drowning in angst he's literally living his best life it's great

his mom is a voice actor and super hot. yes this is a podcast yes his mom is hot his dad is also hot

his dad is a half demon so taylor is also part demon which is very slay of him i think

my favourite thing to do forever is latch onto super happy overly confident characters and then break them into a million pieces in my writing and i have psychoanalyzed taylor to the ends of the earth and back (although i'm sure i could go farther) and determined that he is a master of emotional repression that he is completely unaware of because he percieves all of the action packed battle shit happening as if it's an action scene in an anime and all of the blood and gore and near-deaths and actual deaths have not shaken him up yet consciously because he's too wrapped up in the epicness of it. but there is absolutely NO FUCKING WAY he is not affected by this shit so i believe that it's repression at it's finest and it will come back to bite him and it will be absolutely terrible. <- that's what i think about every time i write my angsty fics

also a large portion of the fandom hcs him as being a chronic painer and i do as well because <3 same <3 and cane user taylor ftw

this is really sudden but any movie recommendations, im in a bit of drought for this to watch right now and i’m up for anything, especially if it’s horror related, or gay or can be interpreted as gay you know what i mean?

Horror and gays, two of my favourite things. Here's some movies that are mostly both.

My top choice is not-quite horror, and you've probably seen it, but just in case you haven't, Stand By Me (1986) is one of my favourite movies, and it's Stephen King, so it definitely has horror vibes, even if it's never out and out scary.

As for horror that's kinda gay? (I'll try to get the obvious ones out of the way since I'm not sure which ones you already know about.)

Ginger Snaps (2000) and Ginger Snaps: Unleashed (2004) feat. my favourite probably autistic, definitely (gender?)queer Brigitte Fitzgerald.

I know it's really popular now, again, but the old Interview with the Vampire (1994) was pretty queer for its time. Obviously the show outshines it in terms of queer content, but hey, I love these two idiots.

Tomie (富江) (1998) from Japan is pretty cool and queer. In a similar vein, Wishing Stairs (2003) (which I think is the third? one in the Korean Whispering Corridors series) still sticks in little queer teen me's mind.

Obviously Jennifer's Body (2009), this is like my comfort film lmao.

The Quiet (2005)

and

Excision (2012) feels pretty queer to me, but others might disagree. At the very least, Pauline is so wonderfully weird she's basically queer in my books.

All Cheerleaders Die (2013) was a lot more fun than I thought it would be.

also, maybe it's not overtly queer enough for other people, but the friendship in The Battery (2012) which is one of my FAVOURITE ZOMBIE FILMS OF ALL TIME is a pretty good one. It could be homoerotic if you squint??

Lyle (2014) and What Keeps You Alive (2018) are a very specific brand of overtly queer horror that is specifically, canonically queer, but not my favourite type of queer, if I'm being honest. I don't want to spoil anything so I won't say more. Lyle is an incredible film, and not just because Gaby Hoffman is so so beautiful and absolutely just knocks it out of the park. What Keeps You Alive is... less good, but fun to watch with pals, I guess. It's that kind of horror.

Speaking of beautiful people, Don't Kill Me (Non mi uccidere) (2021) Alice Pagani and Silvia Calderoni I'm sorry? My gender exploded. I don't know why it has such a bad rating on imdb. It wasn't amazing, but it was fun and unique. Worth a shot, imo.

The Perfection (2019) what a fucking ride. Pretty queer. Maybe don't eat first.

The Midnight Swim (2014) isn't quite horror and isn't quite queer but it is female-centric, and I don't think enough people have seen it. It deserves a watch.

The Blackcoat's Daughter (2015) was a girl's boarding school which already made it queer enough for me haha. Some good scares in this one. Better than anticipated.

And, speaking of boarding schools, The Silenced | 경성학교: 사라진 소녀들) (2015) is a Korean movie set during the Japanese occupation of Korea in the '30s and idk man. Beautiful, weird, gay. It was good. If you like this one, you will probably like A Tale of Two Sisters (장화, 홍련) (2003) which is (probably) not queer but very, very good horror and very beautiful.

They Look Like People (2015) is another one like The Battery. Could be homoerotic if you squint. Obsessed with the male friendship in this one, and the mental illness factor. I really love this movie. This is the movie I would maybe double-feature with Super Dark Times (2017) for top five fave boy-friendships.

Raw (Grave) (2016) arguably not queer, but certainly queered desires or 'othered' desires. Another female-centric horror. I love this one. Blue My Mind (2017) feels Queer AF. It's like if Fucking Åmål (1999) was a horror movie. I also recommend Fucking Åmål, but it's not horror, it's just queer.

Thelma (2017) actually queer. Beautiful, extremely well-done, not crazy about the ending.

Would it be weird of me to mention The Shed (2019) Maybe I just wanted it to be queerer? I can't actually remember if it was now, just that the potential was there.

And, not quite queer but definitely good horror, check out Magic Magic (2013) if you haven't seen it. Girl Asleep (2015) is horror adjacent, not super queer, but also just... so weird and good and fun.

ocs as adults!! do tell!!

HI!!! this will be long sorry . ive been thinking about lin and odin mostly (noah doesnt become an adult and lucas is complicated.... but)

lin goes into computer engineering, he gets a phd in computer science, and odin becomes a mechanic. they move (together because theyre gay) to a small town near edinburgh after lin gets his phd, where odin opens his own garage and lin gets some hotshot job in some computer themed industry. i dont know anything about computers.

odin keeps making his model planes, and eventually starts selling them as a way of making extra money- even though they dont really need it. he starts therapy because lord he needs that badly (as does lin).

they get married when lin is 27 and odin is 28. odin proposes to him in his shed while theyre back in their hometown visiting lucas. lin was always rather neutral on the concept of marriage but odin really wanted to get married so he could go around being like: LOOK AT MY HUSBAND!!! IM MARRIED TO THIS MAN!!!

lucas is lins best man, madison is odins best man. lucas and lin remain close friends after lin leaves for university, they dont let the distance change that. madison became a psychiatrist and ended up moving to glasgow, so she and odin end up hanging out over weekends to go on walks together. lucas is a graphic designer but is trying to publish his own graphic novel and become a full time author because he hates his job. he visits lin every month or so.

odin builds a shed in his and lins back garden. he cant live without a shed. he uses the money he gets from his now semi-estranged family for lins non work related computer engineering projects and his garage.

i go back and forth on whether or not they have kids. i think it would scare lin, because he lost his sister when she was quite young and he doesnt want a repeat of that. odins probably scared of becoming his father, but wants to prove that he isnt. if they do have kids i think odin would be a great dad. as would lin. odin would make them little toy planes to play with, and lin would teach them how to play magic the gathering, and tell them all about his favourite mathematical facts.

lucas is more interesting to think about, because hes probably severely traumatised from the whole noah ordeal. i think he finds dating difficult as an adult. he focuses on his webcomics, his job, and his dream of becoming a famous graphic novel author. he went through a lot of therapy in his late teens and early twenties but i think he ends up being a very solitary dude, besides from lin.

all in all: domestic gay bliss. theyre all in love and best friends and having a great time <333 thank you for asking as always :^)

While I'm not disagreeing (Obi-Wan and Anakin's friendship will forever be one of my all time favourite things), Padme and Anakin's relationship wasn't actually that bad if you've watched the Clone Wars Series, cause the show spent much more time on establishing the characters and their development and dynamics with others🤔🤔🙈

Waterbaby and MW get along super well, actually! Despite what little interactions they’ve had in canon, I like to think they go way way back to when MW first got to Centaurworld via The Rift and started learning magic :) I’d liken their dynamic parallel to Horse and Wammawink (in a more familial sense than anything else, though.) Waterbaby offers genuinely good advice at times, and also tells stories a lot. MW isn’t much to talk, and enjoys the stories she tells. (Also Waterbaby likes making her food when she visits the houseboat)

And she’s a good should to cry on too when things prove to be to much for MW to bear.

Fraternal Twin Tree Shamans & MW

Okay, these two and Judge Jacket are her two…least favourite Shamans. Judge Jacket is for a completely different reason but the twins she isn’t particularly biased towards (she’s generally a bit neutral towards them). If anything, they’re nice to hang around in silence. Nature has always been a calming thing for her, so while she isn’t fond of them, they’re pretty okay to be around in certain circumstances.

Sometimes a Moletaur is your friend but being in THE HOLE brings you so much PAIN™️

MW probably appreciates Jacket’s need and appreciation for justice, but being inside of the Moletaur hole makes her want to start yelling because it’s both hot AND humid and it’s a B A D T E X T U R E ™️. if it was just HOT then it’s be fine because I headcanon she’s cold all the time. Heat is nice. Humidity, though!!! Absolutely awful. Horrible texture. She would rather be stuck in the In-Between for at least a month than be in the Moletaur Hole for an hour. Loves Judge Jacket, though! Hates the texture of. Everything. in the Moletaur Hole.

But if it were up to her and not the pressure of how damp everything feels, she would definitely talk to Judge Jacket more!!

They probably take sun naps together!)

a critique of london's two main galleries and how the national gallery can and should really just DO BETTER.

this post is entirely self indulgent and I know no one cares nor even knows what this is about, but. im really worked up all of a sudden, and I really want to get my thoughts out. under the cut, you will read about how the tate is a pillar of progression in the art world, while its "parent" gallery (if you will) is stagnant in its equality practices.

please take this with a grain of salt. its mostly a vent post, but the issues I raise are real and not exaggerated. I've tried to be as clear and concise as possible, but this still got very long. sorry! I welcome thoughts, especially from the minorities mentioned and also from people working in the arts and heritage sector.

national gallery/ng: the national gallery of art in trafalgar square, london. tate: all associated galleries with the tate name, but most importantly tate britain and tate modern.

I want to preface this by saying that I have worked at the national gallery. I was part of the education team from 2019 - 2020.

and I want to also say that, among my peers, I was the one that seemed to know most about the history of the ng. let me contextualise the existence of these two galleries a little bit for those who might not know.

once upon a time, the tate didn't exist and the ng was the principal gallery in london. around the time that turner bequeathed his work to the nation, the ng was running out of space, FAST (didn't help that turner's body of work was massive), and thus the tate was born. it was decided that the tate would focus on british artists and art collections, while the ng would keep to collecting mainly european artworks (there is one room in the whole gallery that is dedicated to British art).

that was just a quick run down. obviously, these galleries started to operate on their own values and stopped closely associating with each other eventually. tate britain gave way to an expansion including tate modern, liverpool, and st ives. (I admit I know far less about the tate than the ng).

anyone who knows me well knows that my favourite place on all of this earth is the national gallery. I adore it there. its collection is truly special to me. BUT one must know when and how to critique the things they love, no?

what this post is about, essentially, is the fact that the ng consistently proclaim they want to be more diverse, open, and inclusive of all minorities in the art world - and then remain completely static in reality when it comes to enacting real change.

and this wouldn't be too noticeable, for they do a good job of speaking loudly about what they WANT to do, if it wasn't for the tate showing them up at EVERY OPPORTUNITY.

let me elaborate.

actually, I have no idea how to start. this problem is massive.

let's break it down into categories, yeah?

YOUTH/YOUNG PEOPLE (not children - specifically teens and young adults):

while working at the ng, I heard many complaints from my own and other departments claiming that they wanted to engage young people more with the gallery.

great! but how?

well, up until 2020, the ng had only ONE (1) opportunity for young people to engage with the gallery. it was a programme called "young producers" and it was exactly the very programme that I was part of. through an application and then interview process, 10 lucky 18-25 year olds were chosen to ""internship"" at the gallery.

the gallery scrapped this programme after my year's completion probably due to lack of funds.

the ng does not offer discounts for young people, or any group that they can be a part of within the gallery's organisation. possibly due to funding, yes, but...

the tate? the tate doesn't have a "young producers" programme or anything of the sort, BUT the tate DOES HAVE the "tate collective", which anyone between 16-25 can join. its like tate galleries membership lite: you get 10% off in shops and restaurants, AND you get £5 tickets to ticketed exhibitions and events.

now. when it comes to engaging with a gallery, as a young adult, which would you go for? the gallery that gives you £5 access to any paid exhibit you want AND a discount in shops, OR the gallery that offers NOTHING for your age group?

if you don't have much knowledge about art, or you don't care too much about renaissance-to-impressionist european painting, you'd go for the tate.

OH! and let's not forget the dedicated GCSE and A-Level art help and inspiration pages on the tate website!

WOMEN/NON-BINARY ARTISTS:

perhaps here is where this commentary might get a bit unfair. the tate is always exhibiting female and female-aligned artists in the Tate Modern, because female artists can practice today than they ever could in the past. and since the ng focuses on (as ive said) renaissance-to-impressionist periods, there's not much opportunity for them to showcase female/non binary artists. they are very, very proud of the 8 female artists that they DO represent, however. idk, in this category, its a bit hard to complain.

NON-WHITE ARTISTS:

yeah, again, I can't say much here against them. the ng's mission is literally to house EUROPEAN art, and there are very few non-white artists between the renaissance to the impressionists. HOWEVER, what I can say, is that I have nEVER even heard a whisper of race discussions in the contexts of any of the paintings in the collection.

let me put it this way:

this past week, I attended the tate's exhibition on hogarth and europe, and throughout the exhibit, one could clearly see that much attention to race relations in cosmopolitan cities such as London and Paris etc had been paid. even in paintings where no Black people were depicted, there was a hidden story to be told. (btw I readily recommend the exhibit if youre in London!)

in the ng? nothing. nada. zip. im SURE there are stories to be told, but like I said, ive never heard of any of them to be even discussed as a possibility.

LGBTQ+:

ah. we've reached the crux of the matter. the thing that got me worked up. there's a lot here to unpack, so bear with me.

I just got an email from the tate this afternoon. it's advertising the return of their monthly late night openings. within it, it discusses what events will be hosted at this month's late.

the thing that caught my eye first is the music/dj that they've chosen this month is lgbtq+.

the thing with the tate, see, is that they're very on-the-ball when it comes to lgbtq+ representation, and SEEMINGLY NEVER in a 2D, performative way. I might not have worked for them and seen the organisation from the inside, but I genuinely get the feel that this is an issue that the tate is determined to be loud about and speak up about.

let's see. in 2017, tate britain hosted an exhibit titled "Queer British Art" - which was exactly what it says on the tin. it was an exhibit of about 6 or 7 rooms full of art either by queer artists or depicting queer relationships - or both. it was put on in celebration of pride month, in June.

after this exhibition ended, you'd maybe think that would be the end of it. NOPE! the tate has retained TO THIS VERY DAY a walkthrough the main, free galleries highlighting the queer histories behind the artwork. this takes place in the form of small plaques, like a curator's plaque, next to the chosen art work, with a small explanation of what you're seeing.

what else have they done? well, like I mentioned at the start, they regularly hire lgbtq+ creators - artists, musicians, etc - to perform or display at the galleries. such as the dj this coming late.

additionally, the tate have implemented gender neutral bathrooms.

let's compare to the ng, shall we?

there was hesitance and reluctance from the director and others in above positions to implement gender neutral bathrooms in the new office spaces that the ng built in 2020. I attended the talk about the new office space for the employers back in 2019, when it was still under construction, and when someone in the audience asked about gender neutral bathrooms, there was clear hesitation on the part of the director to answer the question.

but putting that aside for the moment, since that's ambiguous at best.

there has been, in all my knowledge and memory of the ng and its events (which is not comprehensive, I know, but spans a good 5-7 years at least), about 2 events that have been focused on lgbtq+ history in the collection.

and one of those events was run by myself and my fellow young producers.

the other, I only heard about - never managed to see it in person. it was allegedly a life drawing session in the gallery with drag and non binary models.

but back to my event. it was on Valentine's Day 2020, and it was to celebrate lgbtq+ history month. we each researched one (I did two) paintings with queer histories, and then on the day gave public and free talks about what we had complied and learnt.

so.

the one proper event that the ng has hosted focused on lgbtq+ history in its collection was thought up and presented by a bunch of 18-25 year olds, on their own whim. (yes we had help from our supervisors, but we were free to choose what we wanted to do for the event).

SUMMARY:

the thing is, it's not like the ng doesn't have the resources to be more inclusive in its history and teaching. its on-site library is FULL of records about each and every painting, as well as books on every artist represented, and more. its a joy to be in that library.

you want to know what I think? I think that the director of the ng is too old and "old-fashioned" (for lack of better term) for the role. hey, the director of the tate isn't young either - BUT the Tate's director is a WOMAN. I get it - you kind of have to be a bit older to get to directorship! Kenneth clark (youngest ever director of the ng) was an exception. but. but.

but I just think that it's the higher ups that are the problem. because everyone in the education department in the ng are PASSIONATE and DEDICATED to each one of the above causes! this is no fault or critique of them, and please don't take it to be so! this is a critique of how the ng is led from higher positions. which don't seem to care.

not mentioned here is the tate's commitment to accessibility and education of disability within the arts, I wanted to mention. just to show the PURE SCOPE of the tate's dedication to equality and education in the arts.
