Do you ever think about Camp Half-Blood’s reaction to Jason, specifically from those who remember Luke?

When they see him from behind, watching over some of the younger demigods and giving them advice, do they feel the urge to shove him away so he can’t bring any more to his side?

You Don't Need an Agent! Publishers That Accept Unsolicited Submissions

I see a few people sayin that you definitely need an agent to get published traditionally. Guess what? That's not remotely true. While an agent can be a very useful tool in finding and negotiating with publishers, going without is not as large of a hurdle as people might make it out to be!

Below is a list of some of the traditional publishers that offer reading periods for agent-less manuscripts. There might be more! Try looking for yourself - I promise it's not that scary!

Albert Whitman & Company: for picture books, middle-grade, and young adult fiction

Hydra (Part of Random House): for mainly LitRPG

Kensington Publishing: for a range of fiction and nonfiction

NCM Publishing: for all genres of fiction (YA included) and nonfiction

Pants of Fire Press: for middle-grade, YA, and adult fiction

Tin House Books: very limited submission period, but a good avenue for fiction, literary fiction, and poetry written by underrepresented communities

Quirk Fiction: offers odd-genre rep for represented and unagented authors. Unsolicited submissions inbox is closed at the moment but this is the page that'll update when it's open, and they produced some pretty big books so I'd keep an eye on this

Persea Books: for lit fiction, creative nonfiction, YA novels, and books focusing on contemporary issues

Baen: considered one of the best known publishers of sci-fi and fantasy. They don't need a history of publication.

Chicago Review Press: only accepting nonfiction at the moment, but maybe someone here writes nonfiction

Acre: for poetry, fiction and nonfiction. Special interest in underrepresented authors. Submission period just passed but for next year!

Coffeehouse Press: for lit fiction, nonfiction, poetry and translation. Reading period closed at time of posting, but keep an eye out

Ig: for queries on literary fiction and political/cultural nonfiction

Schaffner Press: for lit fiction, historical/crime fiction, or short fiction collections (cool)

Feminist Press: for international lit, hybrid memoirs, sci-fi and fantasy fiction especially from BIPOC, queer and trans voices

Evernight Publishing: for erotica. Royalties seem good and their response time is solid

Felony & Mayhem: for literary mystery fiction. Not currently looking for new work, but check back later

This is all what I could find in an hour. And it's not even everything, because I sifted out the expired links, the repeat genres (there are a lot of options for YA and children's authors), and I didn't even include a majority of smaller indie pubs where you can really do that weird shit.

A lot of them want you to query, but that's easy stuff once you figure it out. Lots of guides, and some even say how they want you to do it for them.

Not submitting to a Big 5 Trad Pub House does not make you any less of a writer. If you choose to work with any publishing house it can take a fair bit of weight off your shoulders in terms of design and distribution. You don't have to do it - I'm not - but if that's the way you want to go it's very, very, very possible.

Star Names

I have, once again, gotten into Harry Potter fanfiction. To be specific, Rigel Black chronicles recursive fanfiction.

So I'm making my way through wikipedia, going through the constellations and star names, making notes on the ones that are most Given Name-like, ignoring the ones that are after 1980 (quite a few), and noting the ones that might still be too modern/muggle for the Ancient and Most Noble House of Black.

Then I bought a book called Star Names, their Lore and meaning by Richard Hinckley Allen* and went through that. Given how confusing the book is to me, and how it includes poetical names as well as designations, I've marked the beginning of his contributions with *, the end with (RHA).

After all that work, I may as well share it.

Organised by Constellation, the genitive, and sometimes the constellation's abbreviation. Then the names of stars, which I haven't sorted at all. I used the Caelum constellation as a cutoff, which was something like 1756, which cut out suprisingly little compared to the post 1990 cutoff. The IAU has been Busy the last few decades, so many wonderful star names...

I miss this blog so much :( Are you planning on coming back to it one day? It's just it was so much fun to check your blog every week and we haven't even seen most of the cast yet :(

//MOD: I don't even know if the person who sent this still uses this site. I don't know if half of the Followers I had still uses it! It's 2023 now, and this poor person Asked this in 2016. Goodness, that's a whole ass dog's age, huh? I think about this blog a lot. I had so much fun, I made some hilarious quips, and then just. Poof. It all stopped. If I recall the timeline correctly, I had moved, and I didn't have at-home internet access for YEARS. During that time, depression got heavier and heavier for me, and my body started to slowly disintegrate. I'm now effectively disabled. That's been a wild change to adapt to, and suuuper not helpful with the depression, lemme tell ya! So, yeah. My mental health and my physical health just tanked it, and I couldn't bring myself to film, edit, and then go to a library or somewhere to create and schedule the posts. And for that, I'm sorry. I always wanted to come back, which was why I never officially closed this, then I couldn't remember the login, and. Well. Here we are! ^_^; Sometimes I'd think about bringing Perci back via Tiktok or something. (This time with short hair, since I hacked all of mine off!) Or maybe I could do a final Hurrah with some old Asks that got left in my inbox, have Perci come back one more time, and answer those. A little swan song, as it were. It'd probably be more for myself than anything, since again. Not sure if anybody would even notice here, but that's okay! I just miss being Perci. I wish we could've seen more of the cast, too. But a thing I've learned from collaborating over my many Internet Years, is the more people there are, the harder it gets to get things done. People have lives, jobs, higher priorities, and then there's my little disabled, Depresso butt just twiddling my thumbs with big ideas, but no ability to execute them. Ah, well. Anyway. It's stuff for me to ponder, but in the meantime; cheers to Persea Jackson, and the fun I had on this blog. It was a blast. ^_^//

I think I’ve already made this post but growing up androgyny in characters and people made me just assume that gender and gender roles are something you can mess with from the get go.

I heard about gay and lesbian before I heard about transness- well by that term. See I remember in elementary school I wasent homophobic persea but I was more confused why there was a need for a difference between gay and lesbian. Also I treated “homo” basically like a slur but like a few notches less. I never called anyone it but in my head I liked how it sounded but was like “sadly the word can’t be used it’s a shame it’s a nice word” and I thought it was fascinating in my dyslexic mind that it felt similar to “hobo”.

But back to my original idea, androgyny I thought was the coolest thing ever, but in my young mind this was all kinds of gender queer concepts and outside concepts. Like in my head I associate this one veggie tales character who wasent given a name as not being androgynous but being unique.

One character I remember very strongly about is

Doris from shrek, I don’t remember thinking “this Isant a girl it’s just some dude” but I also didn’t think “this is just a manly women” or “this is someone who transitioned to being more feminine”

Instead my head interpreted basically her as being bigender, and I know this because the term I came up with for her was “he she” now I was 5 and I didn’t like the other term I heard her be called “hermaphodite” so see I came up with that by using what little vocab I had in 2005 or whatever

Honestly I remember hearing “herm-“ a lot but I don’t remember why. Then agian I’m talking about the 2000s

Some other things that I group in here is just general ‘breaking of gender roles’ Tom boys, female actors playing boys, and just designs that I couldn’t tell their gender

I still can’t tell you if charlie is a boy or a girl they just are chill.

Weirdly lily from Hannah Montana is strangely just the textbook example of a tomboy….weirdly I want to say I saw her as a lesbian but I don’t remember

I growing up only got a little exposure to sonic and so to me tails was just this genderless character to me and it made me think they were the coolest

Weirdly also junior from veggie tales like that boy I swear was a girl and that’s really probably because they make female vas to child voices, same as tails. It’s a hard voice to do, but when I’m little it just drew me in since I saw them as androgynous

Also in shrek 2 there is dialogue that confirms that Doris is trans

Persea Laurus is a scrappy jadeblood who loves to hoard shiny things they find in the trash. they’re usually found outside in the daytime causing trouble and stealing things they probably shouldn’t, like road signs and yard ornaments. their favorite color is red, and they always carry around multi-colored pens in their hoodie pocket. obsessed with human foods and known to eat them incorrectly (much to their cautious moirail’s dismay) affectionately referred to as “scoops” by his friends.

Typhlo Chelli is a gentle giant of a goldblood with a knack for math. his psiionic powers stopped developing at a young age after he lost his right eye in an accident, along with his arm. he loves to garden and care for small animals, and he loves to solve puzzles. generally a total pacifist, but not afraid to stand up for his moirail. the green doodles on his arm are from Persea (who apparently doesn’t believe in personal space)
