Listen: I accidentally drank more than I expected tonight. I'm about to play Rollplayer with wife but before I do let me just throw it out there that when I hit 200 followers (I'm at 175 now) I'll post the human on robot sex scene I wrote for a failed novel like five years ago.

It's the only erotica I've ever written and I don't think it'll count as erotica to most people but I don't actually think it's terrible.

This is just a not-so friendly reminder to non-disabled people, especially authors, people in fandoms or in media analysis circles: Cripple/crippled is not just a fancy way of faying "badly injured". it's not an adjective you can just throw in to spice up your sentence because you used "injured" or "disabled" too many times in that paragraph, or because you feel like it gives your writing some extra "oomph".

Cripple is a slur.

A slur the physically disabled community has been asking people not to use for DECADES, since at least the 1970's (50 years). It's a slur with centuries of abuse behind it, centuries of being used to justify physically disabled people as less-than, centuries of demonisation, mistreatment, ostracization, and murder.

Some people within the physical disability community are reclaiming it, that's where movements like cripplepunk (also known as crip-punk or C-punk) come from. That's fine, I'm not talking about that. I love the cripplepunk movement and everything it stands for: being unapologetic about our disabilities and not changing ourselves for the comfort or convenience of able-bodied folks. But the people who use it in that context understand the history of the word, they know how it was used to hurt us, and they understand that not everyone in the physically disabled community is comfortable with the use of the word, especially those who were around when someone being labelled as "crippled" was seen as a valid reason to treat them as less than human. They understand the impact of the word.

But If you, as an able bodied person, casually uses "cripple" in your work, at best you are showing your disabled audience that you haven't been listening to us, at worst, you show you don't care about weather we feel safe in the spaces you have created.

And for able-bodied authors specifically, even if your character is physically disabled, I'd still recommend avoiding it unless you're prepared to do a LOT of sensitivity readings from multiple sensitivity readers. I've been physically disabled since I was 1 year old, I learned to walk for the first time in prosthetics and have been using a wheelchair since I was in school, I have no memory of life as an able-bodied person, and even I don't feel comfortable using the word cripple in my work.

It's a loaded word, with a lot of implications and a LOT of very dark, and for some people, very recent history. It's not a sentence enhancer to just throw in willy-nilly. Please.

discovering a major plot point of their WIP halfway through and just adding it in with any other changes, telling themselves they'll "go back and revise it later"

lots of staring at a blinking cursor hoping it'll magically write

abandoning their main WIP at a crucial part to write the mini WIP that floated into their thoughts

thinking more about what they're going to write than actually writing

complaining about their favourite character dying off in a novel while simultaneously creating a character whose death will be painful for the reader in their WIP

"look I wrote another 10 words" to anyone who will listen

knowing the entirety of the plot but nothing at all when you open a new paper

knowing the exact definitions of the most obscure words but forgetting the simplest things

writing a sentence, being proud of it, finding it again while editing, being really proud, sending it to your friend, realizing it's from Percy Jackson or some other popular equivalent.

smiling in pain when your friend asks you about the wip you abandoned months ago ("I know I will finish it this time")

Have you had a rough time? So have I. And so has Bob.

Sometimes we get tired. Sometimes our brains are empty, itchy with dust, or stuffed full of thick pudding. Sometimes you think you're doing fine and then your cat (let's call him Rob) knocks over and breaks the magnetic goose that holds your keys, and you break down crying in the kitchen even though that's not a proportional response.

It happens. And that's okay.

It's good to stop and take a step back, even if it can only be a little step. Make sure you're eating sometimes and drinking water, and hopefully a fun drink or snack every now and then. Feel your feelings when they happen. It helps them pass easier.

I'm going to take care of the soft baby bird inside my chest. Tomorrow Wife and I are going to the beach and I'm going to put my feet in the ocean. I consider the ocean my most authentic parental figure. It's hard to stop moving but if you don't take a break you'll eventually break down and then you'll be out of commission for much longer. And that's not good!

So take a break if you need one, friends. Even if it's just for the day.

It's what Bob would want.

Writing advice for new writers

Some things that I wished I had been told when I started writing <3

1. Read, read, read:

Immerse yourself in the works of established authors across various genres. Reading not only exposes you to different writing styles and techniques but also helps you understand the fundamentals of storytelling. It broadens your vocabulary, sparks your imagination, and inspires your own writing.

2. Write regularly:

Make writing a habit. Set aside dedicated time each day or week to write, even if it's just for a short period. Consistency is key to improving your skills and developing your unique voice. Practice, experiment, and don't be afraid to make mistakes – it's all part of the learning process.

3. Embrace the editing process:

Writing is rewriting. Understand that your first draft is just the beginning. Editing and revising are crucial steps that transform your work into its best version. Be open to constructive feedback, whether from friends, writing groups, or professionals. Embrace the opportunity to refine your ideas, strengthen your prose, and polish your storytelling.

4. Find your writing environment:

Discover the environment in which you feel most comfortable and creative. Experiment with different settings, and create a space that inspires and motivates you to write. Surround yourself with objects, images, or music that enhance your creativity.

5. Explore different genres and styles:

Don't limit yourself to a single genre or writing style. Experiment with different forms of writing – from short stories to poetry, fiction to non-fiction. Trying new genres and styles challenges you as a writer, expands your skills. I also find this really helpful If I feel stuck in a project. Whenever I feel really stuck, I like to open a new document, or even get a pen and some paper and just write something completely different. It might just be a silly little poem, or maybe I’ll just write down what I’ve been doing that day. Just something to get out of my head, and then I can get back to my project with a clearer mind.

6. Write what you love:

Write about topics that genuinely interest and excite you. When you're passionate about your subject matter, your enthusiasm will shine through in your writing. Whether it's fantasy, romance, history, or science fiction, let your love for the topic fuel your creativity and captivate your readers.

7. Trust your voice:

Each writer has a unique voice, perspective, and story to tell. Embrace your individuality and trust your instincts. Don't compare yourself to others or try to imitate someone else's style. Your voice is what sets you apart and makes your writing authentic.

8. Enjoy the process:

Above all, enjoy the process of writing. Writing is a creative outlet, a form of self-expression, and a journey of self-discovery. Embrace the ups and downs, the challenges and triumphs, and savor the joy of bringing your ideas to life through words.
