Chapter 6
Clip clop. Clip clop. Clip clop.
Each thud of the horse’s hooves hitting the dirt below reverberated in the open meadow. The sound was a stark contrast to the duke’s usual return. Typically, when returning, Bucky didn’t care about drawing attention to himself. No one paid him any attention anyway. This time was different.
Beyond the cloud of dirt, Bucky could make out the shadow of a man leaning against one of the horse stalls. Gently pulling the reins, his sleek black horse slowed into a trot. The cloud of dirt faded behind them. Drawing closer, Bucky could make out the honey locks and strong jaw beyond the rich fabrics clinging to the man. Steve. Bucky wasn’t sure if he recognized the man because he wore the face of his old best friend or because of the status that came with the clothes he now wore, the clothes Bucky once wore.
When he arrived at the stalls, neither man said a word as Bucky dismounted the horse. Bucky made quick work unfastening the saddle while stealing a glance at the new prince over the horse’s back. He could feel Steve’s eyes on him, putting Bucky on edge. He didn’t know why Steve had been waiting for him, watching him.
Sensing the silent judgment radiating off Steve in waves, Bucky’s control burst. Stomping around the front of the horse, he snarled, “If you have something to say, just say it.” His words were hard, but his hands were gentle as he removed the horse’s bridle. The horse blinked back at Bucky, unfazed by his loud outburst.
Steve kept mute, wondering if Bucky would confess something if he remained silent long enough. In return, all he got was a lot more stomping and grunts as he closed the wooden door, sealing the horse behind it.
Lifting a hand to block the sunlight from his eyes, Steve asked. “Where’d you go?”
Bucky shrugged, wiping the dirt from his leather-clad palms. “You came all this way just to ask me that?”
Steve frowned, folding his arms across his chest. ”Just answer the question, Buck.”
“What are you doin’ here?” Bucky countered.
“Can a guy just check in on his pal?”
While Bucky’s mouth remained frozen, his eyes scanned Steve from head to toe, searching for a tell. Growing impatient, Steve pushed himself off the wall, taking a step forward. “Where’d you go?” He asked again.
Bucky ran a gloved hand along the stubble on his chin. “Out for a ride.” It wasn’t a lie, but Bucky knew that didn’t answer Steve’s question. Bucky stalked away from the horse stall and headed straight for the castle.
Bucky got three feet before a hand on his shoulder stopped him. “Bucky, stop.” The brunette spun around, knocking Steve’s hand off his shoulder in the process. “I know.” Bucky stilled, his eyes cold enough to make Steve freeze. Ignoring his chilling gaze, Steve sighed. “Tony sent word that you’ve been lurking outside of his house. It’s bad enough he lost Pepper in the war. You have to stop this obsession with him and Gail.”
The duke straightened his shoulders, clenching his fists. His mind pressing rewind on the moment Tony took a flail to the arm of his last statue. The moment Gail looked at him like he was the bogeyman. They deserved each other.
“I know you, Buck. You’re going down the wrong path all on your own this time. Whatever you’re plotting has to stop. Now.”

I do. I do. I do.
The two words ghosted on Peggy’s lips in a silent prayer. Cast back at her through her wine glass, her scarlet-stained lips wrenched into a grimace. Had the youngest Carter been marrying a gentleman without status or of equal status she would have been fine. Instead, she was marrying the forthcoming king. As a countess, Peggy was already under the spotlight, but her engagement added more pressure. Like sand descending to the base of an hourglass, every wedding planning event taunted her, a countdown until she would lose her privacy and be expected to produce an heir. She needed a proper send-off to her youth, to up the stakes of truth or dare.
Steve would never approve of such a risky game, not when the fate of their kingdom relied on him. Peggy didn’t want to sneak around Steve, but her need for an adventure was too great. If she couldn't find the excitement she craved, settling for living through others would suffice. The countess’s grimace turned into a mischievous grin. Clink. She tapped her wine glass against the glass bottle. Cheers.

A sea of green and pink swarmed Y/N’s vision as she entered the queen’s garden. The orchids were in full bloom this time of year, but the queen’s statue in the center remained the main focus. The carefully etched marble eyes followed Y/N throughout the garden. It didn’t matter that Y/N wasn’t alone. As soon as she caught a glimpse of the queen's icy stare, she realized she was under scrutiny. The silent judging eyes and pressed lips were an expression Y/N had become familiar with. It was a mask Amanda Carter wore around her daughter. It was the same expression Peggy or Steve had adopted at the mention of Bucky. Like everyone else, Y/N was sure the late queen would side with the majority on an introduction to her son; it was a bad idea. Despite the warnings attached to the former prince's name, Y/N wasn’t worthy of an official introduction to her son.
Walking through the queen’s garden with another man hadn’t been on her to-do list, but the prince insisted. T’Challa’s presence the past few days had been welcoming. His kindness had been a slap in the face. It was genuine, not a front in the public eye like her parents often reverted to. Given time, she could envision herself falling in love with the prince. If only Bucky would stop invading her thoughts.
“She’s beautiful.”
The comment caught Y/N off guard. Her eyes sliced toward the prince standing beside her. She scanned him from head to toe. His eyes remained trained on the statue, his face contorted in admiration. The back of his right hand rested in his left, clasped behind his back. T’Challa was a tall man, but between his rigid posture and monochrome black outfit, he grew a few inches with one glance.
“A marvelous queen,” he continued.
“Was,” Y/N corrected.
T’Challa’s lips curved into a tender smile. “In my culture, death is not the end. It’s more of a stepping off point.”
“That’s a nice way to look at it,” Y/N hummed. Making eye contact with the statue once more she wondered if that was true. Did Bucky have anyone in his corner, looking out for him?
Making eye contact with the guard pursuing them, T’Challa extended his elbow. Accepting the silent gesture, Y/N latched onto the prince’s arm. His gait turned brisk, creating a massive distance between the guard and them.
“I am not foolish enough to think you love me,” T’Challa began. Y/N's eyebrows skyrocketed. Before she could open her mouth to protest, the prince continued, “Nor do I love you.”
“Excuse me?” Y/N asked, but part of her was relieved. Sure, her mother would be disappointed she wouldn't marry a prince like Peggy, but it wasn’t what Y/N truly wanted, who she wanted.
T’Challa chuckled. “The king’s son, you fancy him.”
Her attempt at ripping her hand from the prince’s arm failed. Wakanda’s prince held his other hand firmly over hers, maintaining the appearance of a couple. He could hear the faint sound of metal rattling behind the pair. With enough distance between them and the guard, T’Challa reassured her. “Don’t fret. Your secret is safe with me.”
Y/N's shoulders dropped, her eyes trained on the cobblestone beneath her feet. “How did you know?’
“The way the two of you evade one another in public. It’s the same way my friend Nakia and I perform in public.”
A gasp tumbled beyond the woman's lips. The lighthearted way he spoke, as if there were no consequences for their actions, had her head spinning.
“Why are you telling me this?” Y/N whispered.
T’Challa glanced at the woman beside him. “I like you, Y/N. A marriage between us would be profitable to both kingdoms. Between you and your sister, the alliance between our kingdoms would be powerful. An alliance by blood. Since we are in identical situations, I figured we could have our own partnership.”
Y/N's heart thrummed beneath her bodice. She tentatively opened her mouth to speak, her shaky voice betraying her, “What do you propose?”
T’Challa smirked at her choice of words. “We wed. We honor the marriage when it comes to politics and the eyes of the public.”
“And the rest of the time?”
“We are free to see whoever or do whatever we want.”
Mulling over the idea, she frowned as the castle came into view along with other lively bodies. So many things could go wrong, but her focus remained wholly on what could go right. This might be her only opportunity to have something with Bucky. If her parents married her off to anyone else, she was confident they wouldn’t offer her the same arrangement.
After gnawing at her bottom lip, Y/N asked, “Is that a formal proposal?”
Tumblr media
Y/N stood motionless at her bedroom window. The imaginary rock on her finger weighed her down more than she had anticipated. As a child, the idea of wearing a ring from the love of her life excited her, but now, when she imagined a ring on her finger, she saw nothing but a shackle. One her status would trap her in. Forever stuck in a loveless marriage. It would be the performance of a lifetime, for a lifetime.
An image of the dark-haired duke flashed through her mind. Would Bucky accept the terms of this new relationship? He didn’t seem to mind Natasha’s career choice, although her performance was exceptional. He had snuck backstage to fuck her. Was that what Y/N had condemned herself to? A life of sneaking around?
A knock at the door had Y/N stepping away from the window. She had only taken a few steps when the door swung open.
“Y/N!” Peggy shouted, racing toward her. The costly fabric of Peggy’s skirt bunched between her fingers.
Bracing herself for the impact, Y/N was able to keep the two of them upright when her younger sister collided with her. Y/N gasped for air crushed between Peggy’s arms.
When Peggy finally pulled away, her hands trailed from Y/N’s biceps to her hands. Pulling both Y/N hands toward her chest, Peggy squealed, “Congratulations! Mother just told me the good news. Steve and I are so thrilled! T’Challa is a great choice.”
Y/N froze. She knew? “What?” Y/N asked exasperated.
Peggy tipped her head, staring at her sister through her eyelashes. “T’Challa asked Father for your hand. Father accepted.”
Y/N gulped. “And Steve knows?”
Peggy rolled her eyes, “Of course! Mother has become the town crier, alerting everyone that not one but two of her daughters will be queens one day.”
Y/N’s stomach churned. It was idiotic of her to think she would have a chance to break the news to Bucky when she couldn’t talk to the man in public. If her mother hadn’t told him, she was sure Steve would.
“The kings are going to sit down soon and discuss the terms of the alliance. Steve and T’Challa will modify it when they are kings.” Noticing the faraway look on Y/N’s face, Peggy squeezed her hands. “None of that matters. I’m just glad you’re going to be taken care of.”
Y/N wanted to ask Peggy if she and Steve had the same arrangement, but she couldn’t without giving her and T’Challa away.
Wide-eyed, Y/N replied, “T’Challa hasn’t even asked me yet. I haven’t said yes.” Y/N knew it was a pointless argument. Her father had accepted the proposal on her behalf. She would be engaged to T’Challa by the end of the week.
Peggy led Y/N to the bed decorated in rich fabrics. When her sister sat beside her, Peggy sighed, crossing her legs. “I know it’s a lot of pressure, but it will be worth it. Trust me. You need a distraction, and I know just the thing.”
Y/N stared blankly back at the younger Carter.
Peggy inched forward. “Truth or dare?”
Y/N huffed a laugh. If there was one thing that could keep Y/N distracted, it was a dare from Peggy. Without missing a beat, she replied, “Dare.”
Peggy licked her lips before a devilish grin overshadowed her angelic features. “I dare you to visit the pleasure house.”
Dumbfounded, Y/N hissed, “The whore house?! Margaret Carter, have you lost your mind?”
The brunette shrugged and then collapsed the rest of her weight on the mattress. She gazed at the ceiling, kicking her dangling feet like a schoolgirl disclosing a secret at a sleepover. Then she rolled onto her side, propping her head into her hand.
The older Carter resembled a fire-breathing dragon. Peggy swore she could see the steam seeping from her sister’s ears.
“Not as yourself, of course.” Peggy rolled her eyes as if it was the most obvious thing. “Look,” she narrowed her eyes. “I overheard the help discussing that the prince will be there.”
“T’Challa?”
Peggy squeezed her lips in a thin line. “Steve.”
Squeezing the bridge of her nose, Y/N moaned. “You want me to spy on your fiance?”
“Some of the guard’s garments are in the washroom. I’m sure something will fit you.”
Y/N scowled. “You’ve gone mad. Why don’t you spy on Steve yourself?”
Peggy pushed herself into a sitting position, twiddling her thumbs. “He’ll recognize me. We’ve spent too much time together. He’ll never expect you, let alone recognize you.” A coy smile graced her lips, “Unless you surrender.”

Discription: Stonecrest was just like any other town back in the days. What changed throughout the years since 1950 is that it started to become a ghost town. People started going missing at any time of the day. They barricaded their windows and doors. Soon people had forgotten about the town that was in the middle of nowhere and stopped visiting it.
Y/N a 19 year old girl who had just started college and was in her first semester break with her girlfriend and their friends. They all decided to take a road trip in the short bus that they bought.

The late summer wind whisks through the rows of solemn headstones, as if whispering secrets to the long departed. Three figures, their shadows stretching long and thin in the waning sunlight, stand in front of one in particular—one for Nicholas J. Fury, even though the man stands alive and well just inches away.
“If anyone asks for me,” the former director of SHIELD says, his signature eyepatch replaced by a pair of dark sunglasses. “Tell them they can find me right here.”
And with that, he’s gone. Steve Rogers, with his broad shoulders squared against the memories of war and loss, some very recent, nods silently.
“You should be flattered; that’s the closest he gets to saying ‘thank you’,” Natasha Romanoff announces dryly, her auburn hair tousled by the breeze, her normally stoic expression soft under the setting summer sun.
“You’re not going with him?” Steve asks.
“No,” she responds decidedly, her voice firm and resolute, but Steve catches even in that short syllable the faintest quiver of vulnerability.
“But you’re not staying here,” he states matter-of-factly.
“I blew all my covers, I gotta go figure out a new one.”
“Might take a while.”
“I’m counting on it,” she smiles, but then grows a bit more serious as she hands him a thick file, crinkled at the edges and stamped with fading Russian letters. “That thing you asked for… I called in a few favours from Kiev.”
Steve flips it open with a heavy heart, its contents shadowed with the ghosts of his past. Bucky Barnes, now known as the Winter Soldier, is alive. The knowledge both hurts and is freeing, but Steve knows he needs to find him—before he gets lost in the wind once more.
“Will you do me a favour?” Natasha beckons, her voice sweet, like that of an old friend’s. “Call that nurse.”
Steve chuckles, “She’s not a nurse.”
“And you’re not a SHIELD agent.” Natasha says nothing more and kisses him on the cheek, and Steve reels with the knowledge that he will miss her.
She had been just a colleague before, and if this whole thing with Hydra had a silver lining, it was that he still had friends in high places.
She turns to leave, her stride confident and purposeful, the two of them separating not in goodbye, but in ‘see you later’. Steve grips the file in his hands, his thoughts tangling with images of a woman with sharp wit and gentle eyes—one who is not Sharon Carter, or as he now knows her, Agent 13.
“You’re going after him,” Sam says, more of a statement than a question.
“You don’t have to come with me,” Steve offers, knowing that it will be dangerous.
“I know,” Sam sighs. “When do we start?”
Steve pauses, staring down at the picture of Bucky, eyes closed and cryogenically frozen; nobody was going to need him more now.
Back in the day, things were so much simpler. He knew where he stood, who his friends were, who he loved… Peggy’s image from his past flickers through his mind, the one with the painted red lips and dark brown hair, her smile as vivid as if she were standing right here next to him.
A pang of regret hits his chest; history feels dangerously close to repeating itself.
And the past few days have been a lot; the chaos of Hydra, the collapse of SHIELD, it had all but swallowed any chances for reconciliation, any opportunity to reach out to you.
He shakes his head, chasing away the ghosts from his past. He had let the war take this from him once, and he really didn’t want to make the same mistake again.
“There’s something else I need to do first,” Steve finally says, resolve steeling within him. Sam meets his gaze with a hint of surprise, but when he sees the look in Steve’s eyes, he softens with understanding.
“Alright, go do what you gotta do. When you’re done, you know where to find me.” Sam says, the lightness of his tone belying the support behind his words. They shake hands briefly before Steve begins to walk away, a new sense of purpose in his stride. “Hey, just promise me one thing?”
“What’s that?” Steve calls over his shoulder.
“Invite me to the wedding!” Sam quips and Steve can’t help but laugh, the sound echoing against the solemn rows of the departed.
“Let’s not get ahead of ourselves,” Steve replies, but he can’t deny the hope that blooms in his chest, for a future where love and laughter aren’t just possibilities.
Steve takes a taxi through the bustling streets of Washington, D.C., lamenting the tragic loss of his motorcycle. Still, his heart does acrobatics in his chest as he thinks of you, with your tall tales and warm eyes that seem to look right through him.
He can’t shake your image from his mind—the way you’d tilted your head when you challenged his old-school manners, or the subtle smile that played on your lips when he finally managed a comeback. The way you looked up at him during that dance, how good that proximity felt, and how much he wanted to kiss you.
The apartment building looms ahead, and Steve takes a deep breath as he gets out of the taxi and pays the driver, handing over way too many bills and not bothering to get the change.
He pushes the front door open and steps into the foyer, eyes glimmering as he bypasses the elevator and takes the stairs instead, each step bringing him closer to a moment that will alter the course of his personal history.
At your floor, Steve pauses outside your door, gathering his resolve. He can practically hear Bucky’s voice in his ear, a distant whisper from the past, saying, “Go get ‘er, punk.”
Steve runs a hand through his hair, which probably does absolutely nothing to tame it, and steels himself.
He knocks.

Pairing: Peggy Carter x Fem!Ghost!reader
Warnings: grammatical errors, mention of reader's death, death, dark, afterlife, ghost!reader, ANGST
Summary: Y/N as a ghost is watching Peggy's life for years.
A/N: I am feeling so unsure about posting this story. But okay. I wrote it so here it is.
I hope u will let me know your feedback!
This story is.. is just so depresion. I really don't recommend you to read it if it isn't your thing. Also reader is a ghost. Also, the story is not morgaged to any religion, although it may seem so. I wrote how I felt it. I know that the afterlife is not exactly a topic for writing fanfiction, just because of many religions, but please give it a chance. but if you don't want to read, don't read! I understand this. Thank you.
And also! The song in the end, IS NOT MY SONG. It is Slovak song translated to English. I just love this song.
I let you go
Tumblr media
"Please don't leave, my love, I won't survive without you," Peggy was hugging me, a few tears dripping down her face.  She tried to stop the bleeding, but she couldn't.
I looked at her.  She was so beautiful.  That's how I want to remember her.  Beautiful.  But not tearful.  Smiling.
"I love you, Margaret Carter," I whispered and my head fall..
I could still hear her moaning and crying.  But then I found myself in nothing.  Nothing.  I was over my body.
The rain was dripping slowly but accelerated faster and faster until it finally poured.
There was dead silence in the church.  It was dark there.  A few people.
I sat by my coffin.  I cried.  Not because of myself, but because of Peggy, who was sitting on the first bench.  She was deadly pale and didn't even wear her typical red lipstick.
The pastor said something and poured holy water over my coffin.  "Rest in peace, Y / N!"
Peggy definitely collapsed.  She started to cry.  I ran after her, comforting her, but she didn't notice me.  She stopped crying, dried her tears.  I watched her walk to the coffin.  She kissed the top of the coffin and stood on the steps.
"Y / N was a woman with a strong heart. She was kind, she wouldn't hurt anyone in life. She was a sun that shone every other day. She didn't think of herself, only of others ..." Her voice broke, but she continued.  She was so strong.
"But now she's at peace. Nothing hurts her. She wanted us all to live a happy life. So let's make it happen to her.. Rest in peace, my love."  she looked at my coffin and walked away gracefully.
"Peggy ..." I whimpered.
I watched them put me on the ground.  I didn't feel anything.  It was just a body.
Peggy felt everything but nothing.  She stared at the coffin and threw a rose at it.  White rose.
She stared at it for a long time.
She used to sit on a bench and talk to me.  Sometimes she even cried because it came to her.
"Why couldn't we have a beautiful life? Why did you leave me, Y / N? You shouldn't sacrifice your life for mine. I should have been lying here,"
"No, Carter. No way. That's how it should be," I told her, sitting next to her.
She looked at me, but as if over me.  "I feel like you're really here ..." she muttered.
"Because I am."  I just replied.
I was wondering why I was still here.  Shouldn't I be somewhere else?  Am I just a wandering ghost?  A ghost who still carrying something on earth?  More precisely, unhappy love?  Unfulfilled love?
Peggy didn't recover from my death for long.  She moved from our apartment, where we loved each other so much, where there were too many painful memories, she also left the SSR.
I watched her slowly come to terms with my death.  I was happy.  I didn't want her to stay sad.  The year passed slowly.  Peggy learned to laugh again, to love again.  But what made me a little sorry was that she stopped going to visit my grave.  She just stopped.  A bouquet of white roses was withered.
I recently saw her in church.  She got married.  Did she stop caring about me?  I was glad she got married, but ...
Why am I still here?  Is something holding me?
She finally came in a few years.  I stood under the linden tree where my grave was, away from the others.  The sun was shining and I was just floating.
Peggy looked different.  Her hair was long, her lips overlined.  But not with red.  They were a light shade of pink.  She had a few wrinkles on her face, but she still looked beautiful.  She held a bouquet in her hand.  But most importantly, she had a belly.  She was pregnant.
I stared as she sat on the old bench.
"Y / N," she said quietly.  Her voice sounded tired, but not sad.
"It's time to say goodbye. I'm sorry I didn't visit your grave. It hurt. My heart hurt. Like I died too. When you left, I lost the will to live. My love left. The beautiful memories faded."
She continued.  "But ... it's starting to get better. Time is really healing. I still.. my heart still hurts when I think of you, but it's not so bad anymore. I imagine you in a beautiful white dress."
I lay down on the grass.  The sun shone in my eyes.  I listened quietly.  I looked at the little children running in the cemetery.  Their father tried to reprimand them, but he couldn't.  I sighed.  I smirked and I was saddened.  I didn't even have children.
"... I fell in love. Again.. To a good man. I gave love a chance again. It wasn't easy for me, he couldn't match you, but ... I finally started loving him until I definitely loved him. Before  We got married a few years ago, and I'm already pregnant. "  she stroked her belly.
I saw a new life in her.  Baby.
"Y / N .. I love you and I always will, but it's time to say goodbye for good. I'm elsewhere, you're elsewhere. I'm in the world with the living, you with the dead ones. Rest in peace."  a tear dripped from her eye, but she wiped it.
One little girl approached me.  She looked me in the eye.  "Go. Go!"  she sang and walked away.  Her father just stared in confusion.
Peggy got up, and then the wind blew.  The leaves began to move, and Peggy's coat lifted.  Peggy put the bouquet in a vase and kissed my grave.  Then she said the miraculous words, "I let you go."
The wind answered her, the leaves rustled, and I finally left.  I've been waiting all these years for Peggy to let me go.  It has already happened today.
I fulfilled my mission.

One day the moment will come
When time stops
And you will ask in vain
What could have saved us
It is useless to say sorry
When you no longer hear your voice
He will come to us
Heaven will be open
He will come to us
You can't say no
An angel will come to us to take us
He will come to us
One day a strong moment will come
He will stand before you
He asks you in a low voice
What did you like about the world?
What a feeling you want to keep
What do you want to take with you?
He will come to us
Heaven will be open
He will come to us
You can't say no
He will come to us
An angel who will take us
You give him your hand
When your time comes
He will come to us
Heaven will be open
He will come to us
You can't say no

VII: For The Ones That Realize Their Mistake
Steve Rogers was slowly but surely returning to the life he had once lost. His present. The life post-war that he had always hope to create for himself and for Peggy. But why did it feel like the biggest mistake of his life.
He was constantly haunted by you.
A part of him always knew that you would be better off with him. He knew Bucky would take care of you more than he could ever do, but he still felt the familiar ache in his chest every single time he kisses Peggy, every single time the word I love you escaped his lips and Peggy was the one that would hear it instead of you.
He made a decision, but why did it feel like a mistake.
Years had now passed since he had returned to the past, he had now come to make a life for himself, his marriage to Peggy has been everything he wanted and he had never thought he would be allowed to have. After all the war he had come to face on his own and with a team, he was haunted and shaken still.
"Rogers, you look like you've seen a ghost." Howard Stark had broken him from his own growing thoughts. It still scared him to look at his friend, to know that in a good few years, he would be killed by his own best friend and he could do nothing to stop him from it. Disrupting the past would have a great effect on the future he had left everyone he cared for in. The guilt of what was to come.
"I sometimes miss the future." Steve admits, with a smile. Every single day, he is also reminded of Tony of what he had become because of his father and because of the genius that only they could have.
"Still can't convince you to tell me about what my future looks like, Buddy?"
Even as he smiled, it barely reached his eyes anymore. How could he speak of the future when he and his son would be just a tragedy that he sometimes wonder if he could have stopped once upon a time? It was not his place to say things that would change the future--of you and what could have been with the rest of the team.
"You ever had anyone in the future? I won't tell Peggy." Howard smirked, arm resting on his wide shoulder. "Just between you and me, Buddy."
"I did." Steve wouldn't have admitted it at first if he could. But he truly needed to tell someone before he exploded. Peggy, he was all he had always wanted before. But now, after everything that has happened in his life, all the experiences he had come to face he wonders if it was truly was he still wants in his life or if it was just the denial speaking on his behalf now. "A dame that had wanted to kill your son for a mess up he was responsible for."
He could still remember the first day he had ever laid eyes on you. The pain and despair in your eyes after having to be responsible for burying your own parents because of Tony's weapons. How easy it had been for you to use your powers to stop everyone in the team--you had all thought Loki's mind control was powerful, but then there was you, someone that had showed every single one of them the agony you had endured for your parents' untimely death.
They never fault you for initially wanting to kill Tony for it. You had lost the people the meant the most to you. All they could do for you was be there--be the family you had once lost. It was a weird setup, but to have witnessed Tony try his best to be there for you--to be the father that you had once lost it was all you had never thought you could still have in your life. It was Tony and Nat that you had been the closest with, the father and mother you had always wanted to have in your mourning.
You had lost them both too after their fight against Thanos. You weren't able to properly mourn for Nat's death nor did it ever prepare you to see Tony die for your sake and the sake of Morgan--the daughters he never thought he would be allowed to have in his life.
Then he leaves. Leaving you in the care of Bucky and Sam.
It was the guilt, the never ending guilt of putting salt in your wounds after all you have lost. To abandon you when he knew perfectly well you needed him the most. And for what? The never ending denial to himself that you might just be better off without him in your life. He wanted you to move on, to actually live a life away from what you had stumbled yourself in the Avengers Towers all those years ago.
To be the woman that finally makes good in your plans of living a normal life, the white picket fence home, even without him in it.
"Do you sometimes think I made the mistake of coming back to the past?" He inquired turning his attention back to this friend. There had been numerous misunderstandings with the man throughout the years and it scared him sometimes, it was as if he was arguing with Tony all over again, but he trusted him more than he would anyone else.
"You're the only one that could truly answer that Buddy." Howard spoke, the sympathy he would never thought he would hear from the man of all the years of knowing him. "There no more war here like you left in the past. We're all moving forward here. You need to do the same may it be here in the past or in the future if you truly wanted to."
"What about Peggy?" That was his biggest worry.
"Peggy is a big girl. She can handle it, whatever decision you might have."
Now the question remained if he would actually make good word out of the regret in his mind. The suit and the Pym particle was still in the safe confinements of his new home. Was he ready to give it all up to come back to you and everyone else he had left in the past?
"I made the biggest mistake, Stark." He admitted and it stung him more to under to who exactly. You and Peggy didn't deserve this. You both didn't.

Survivor!Natasha Romanoff x Captain Carter x reader

Falling in love again
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When you stopped breathing, Natasha Romanoff died. Her flesh was torn apart by the rusty arrow, the one that of the Ultrons shot at you.
She ran to you with a blood chilling cry. Your name on her lips, the one she was saying out loud only during the moments of intimacy, now was depreciated by the deadly circumstances. With the last beat of your heart, her universe stopped living, it just couldn't survive without you anymore.
Nat was howling for weeks, as if the sharp tip was forever stuck in her own body, poisoning her existence. Clint was with her, but he could only watch how his best friend was slowly dissolving into madness. It took all of his strength, all of his trust, all of his loyalty to stay with her. He knew exactly what Nat was going through, he too lost his family. But she couldn't even have her friend. He chose to give up and leave her alone with your ghost. The one she saw and felt every single day, but could never touch.
Natasha was talking with you, asking your opinion, sharing the details of her everyday survival. And even after you vanished, you were the one who helped her feel ground under her feet again. She almost resigned herself to her fate. Until Watcher decided to play with the universe.
___
Out of all the people, why the hell did her variant trust Peggy Carter? Was it the feeling of protection, Captain was radiating from her?
Was it her firm grip on Nat's shoulder during the battle? Was it her genuine smile of concert, that could get behind the wall Redhead build around herself? Was it the sparkle in her eyes that could become a beacon of light in the darkest of the worlds?
The answer was far simplier, at least Nat hoped it was. Peggy was just the first woman she met in a long time, whose behavior resembled affection. Resembled you. And now standing in front of the Watcher, she had to make a choice, voice a plea, show weakness. Natasha was ashamed of her desire to live further. She was terrified to ask for another chance for herself, when you never got that luxury. But what if, just for a moment another person could look at her, the way Peggy did. It wasn't you, but maybe her imagination could create the rest.
___
Nat's universe wasn't perfect. Her friends were still lost, she was alone and you were only a memory. But at least here, she wasn't enamoured with the idea of not making it through the day.
"Oh no, Romanoff. Don't you even dare to leave me." Peggy's voice could so easily fill any room. Maybe it was her accent or the choice of words, but she was always in command of any space. And now she was once again in charge of Nat's thoughts.
"I'm still here, waiting for you."
Peggy always needed more time to change into civilian clothes with the complexity of her uniform. But tonight they were going for a drink.
And Captain's company was worth the wait.
Nat quickly got accustomed to their nights out. She never had them before, even when her past life was still intact. You were the only one, who managed to change her spartan lifestyle, the only one who could make her laugh. And now that privilege belonged to Peggy.
"What are you thinking about Widow?" She let her whiskey tumbler clink Nat's beer bottle, which was standing on the table without attention.
"Nothing."
"Doesn't look like nothing to me."
What the Redhead could say. She already felt herself as a burden after all these months of letting her anxiety take over for Peggy to see.
You both lost so much, but Captain Carter wasn't a pathetic whimpering mess almost every night. Nat was somehow sure of that.
"I'm having fun." Nat smiled and demonstratively finished the bottle in one go.
"Careful with that kind of amusement."
Peggy gently put her hand on Nat's lost one on the wooden surface. This tiny gesture was enough for Nat to feel the overwhelming protection she was aching for. Skin of the older woman wasn't as soft as yours, but her warmth was real, it was vibrating right into Readhead's pulse point.
"I had my fair share of being careful." Playfulness in green eyes appeared out of nowhere, lightening up everything around them.
"Romanoff, now you're just being a tease."
"And who's fault is that?"
Those evenings were so simple, barely having any weight, sometimes with the words that were not even coherent sentences. But they belonged to Nat. She could pretend, that this extraordinary woman, who saved the world on more than occasion thought of her as someone more than a colleague, someone closer than an acquaintance, someone dearer than just a companion.
"You sure, you don't want me to go with you? It's late."
It was indeed past midnight. And once again Peggy couldn't get drunk, unlike Nat, who was using a street lamp as a support.
"I'll be fine."
"That's not what I asked."
Nat could feel her cheeks heating up. Of course, she wanted Peggy to follow her. For the last few weeks, it was the only thing she so passionately desired. Her name was the one Redhead was muttering in her sleep, her face was the one, she was seeing near her own reflection. Captain Carter was replacing you and the grief was gradually overthrown with jealousy. This wasn't even the variant, she met during the battle with Ultron, but she felt that instant connection even in another universe. Selfish part of her hoped that Peggy did too.
"I'll be fine. you can go and do whatever you do."
Nat didn't want to sound offended, she didn't want to be offended, she didn't want to be so damn needy for the attention of the woman, who wasn't even you.
___
Nat's last mission was a disaster, a bloody and messy ordeal, in which both her and Peggy achieved very little. The disappointment was almost palpable in the helicopter, with the rest of the team staring blankly in front of them. They lost people, they lost an objective, they lost a will to fight further.
For the first time Natasha noticed tears in Peggy's eyes. It wasn't even their fault. And she wanted to whisper this into the super soldier's ear. And not only that. But how could she, she had no right even to look at her the way she did.
"Are you..." But Carter already left. Of course, she didn't want Russian, she didn't need Russian. And it was for the better. Nat had to remember her place in this universe.
"Hey, Widow. I want you to meet someone."
"What is it? Another boy, you think..."
But that wasn't one of Peggy's innocent jokes about Nat's lonely life.
"I... how..." She felt her own consciousness betraying her. Her body losing it's support, losing every single bone, that was supposed to keep her on the ground.
"What is wrong, Miss Romanoff?"
Was it a ghost? Of course not. How could this voice sound exactly like yours? How could your body arch the same in Carter's arms as it did hers? How could you smile at her, the way you always grinned at Redhead?
"You... you know me?" Her hands were clenched in fists of anxiety and fear.
"Of course." You smiled warmly. "Peggy always talks about you. Every evening you're practically a guest at our table."
"Carter?" She hopelessly asked for an explanation. "How? When?"
"I never told you that I have someone special in my life."
Special? You? for someone else? Green eyes were wondering from the face of the woman she was in love to the face of the woman she actually loved all these years. Nat had to do something, had to rip you out of the villainous arms of a rival. But you didn't recognise her. You were devoted to Peggy, At this moment, you both were. Nat could only nod and concentrate on her own heartbeat.
"Yes, we've been together for two years." You continued with the pride straightening your posture.
"Sorry, I didn't tell you." Peggy said with an apologetic smile. "But you know... with our crazy world."
"You should protect what you have." Nat's voice broke your heart.
You knew she endured so much pain in her life, so much loss. And now this woman was looking at you, devouring you as if you were her only saving grace,
"Miss Romanoff..." You left Peggy's warm embrace to reach out to Redhead.
She barely contained her whimper, when you touched her hand. Exactly as you did many times before. Your fingers gently caressing her palm.
You were so close. She could feel the perfume, you hated so much in her universe. And could see the shade of lipstick you would never wear.
"i'm OK." Nat whispered. "Just tired, I should... I should go."
"No" Peggy put her hand on Nat's shoulder with all the confidence she could. "Today was a hard day. And you're going with us. We won't let you be alone."
Natasha suddenly felt all the pain, she thought, she left in her own universe. But no, she took it with herself. And you were the one to revive it once again
___
Natasha didn't go with you that night. And the next, and the next, and the one afterwards. Watcher was making fun of her. Peggy was making fun of her. You were making fun of her.
And the only thing she could do was to ignore all her pain altogether. While staying alone in her rented apartment. For seven days she was alone, being choked on her grief.
"Romanoff!" The aggressive knock on Nat's door woke her up. "I know you're there. You can't ignore me forever."
The River of Russian curses was never-ending.
"What do you want?" Top notch spy somehow got her accent back.
The door opened and Peggy sighed.
"You don't look well, Widow."
"Coming here to tell me that was absolutely necessary."
"Well, you ignored my messages."
Nat was studying the brown eyes in front of her. The one that was always associated with the new chance she got in her life. But now those orbs were nothing more than a cruel reminder that the survivor of another universe was not deserving the happiness.
"I'm not going to allow you to come in." Nat didn't move from her spot. Crossed arms and artificial anger. Redhead always knew how to look intimidating.
"I'm not asking for a courtesy visit." Peggy brushed away a disobedient strand of the red hair from the face she admired so much. "I want to know how you are. And if you're willing to share, what happened?"
Nat couldn't find strength in herself to answer both of those questions. Carter was so close to her, so supportive, so caring. She didn't deserve to be betrayed by someone she considered a friend.
"I'm fine." She still leaned into the touch of the older woman. "I'm really OK."
"Is it because I didn't tell you about Y/N?"
"No, of course not. It was your choice." Nat lowered her head, being afraid that Peggy was in fact reading her thoughts. "She's nice."
"She's my one and only."
Those words were more destructive than anything Nat ever encountered in her entire life.
"You're lucky"
"I'm begging you, let's go with me. We'll have dinner, nice and cozy. Whatever there is, we'll help you go through this."
____
Months passed since that first dinner together. First time you touched her in this universe. So what, if it was just a greeting. First time you kissed her. So what, if it was only a goodbye kiss on the cheek. First time she heard you laughing. So what, if she wasn't the one, who joked. You were charming, welcoming and soft. And you were like this for Peggy. Perfect woman, who was better than Nat in every possible way. Romanoff couldn't handle that revelation. But as much as she thought, she didn't deserve domesticity, the more she was craving for it. You were giving her everything she was deprived of for months. Coming home after those perfect dates, Nat was moaning your name, but you were not the only one in her dreams.
There were parties, movie nights, breakfasts, and the parks. Nat often found herself in between you and Peggy, leaning on your hand, but hearing Carter's mellow tone. And she was falling in love with both of you again. And this was wrong on so many levels.
"Nat! We're getting late."
Of course, you noticed that Redhead definitely wasn't in a hurry. The Avengers were waiting, but she didn't care. Just a vision of you and Peggy being a happy couple and her simply crying on the sidelines was reminding her of that rusty arrow in her chest.
"I think I'll skip this one."
When you came into her bedroom, she was still wearing her comfy clothes and not the dress you helped her to pick up earlier. You sat near her and immediately felt her need for your support.
"I can't do this anymore." She whispered and the raspiness of her voice broke something in you. "I'm not strong enough."
"What are you talking about?"
"You and Peggy. It's too painful."
Nat shook her head to get rid of the tears and stood up.
"What are you talking about?"
"I... I knew you..." She hugged herself and really tried not to break down in front of you completely. "Back in my world. And we were... "
"Together?"
"No." She shrugged. "Something more than that. You were my soulmate."
"That explains a lot." You approached her and she let you bury your face in the red hair you adored. "I love you."
The meaning of your last words had the weight of a dying planet. You were laughing in her face, you were making fun of her. You were cruel.
"Don't say that. Don't mock me."
Instead of the explanations you turned her blushing face to you and carefully barely touching kissed her lips. And it felt so right for you.
"You shouldn't..." Nat tried to get away from you, but your arm around her waist didn't let her. "And Peggy... I think I'm in love with her too."
"We know. I love you and so does Peggy."
"What?"
"We love you, Madly, passionately. It runs through the veins of both of us." You noticed how the fear in her eyes was turning into something far warmer.
"How is that possible?"
"We talked about it. Were sincere with each other. And you're not exactly subtle with your feelings, Romanoff." You kissed her eyes with a smile. "Though, Peggy would definitely like to share this moment with us."
Nat finally smiled and the intensity of her gaze wasn't one of anxiety, but of anticipation.
"Then we definitely should call her."
"And we'll go to the party..."
"...together."

Pairing: Natasha Romanoff x Reader, Avengers x Reader
Featuring: GoTG, Peggy Carter
Warnings: Angst, sad I suppose
Summary: 2 years after her death, your struggling even more. And it’s killing the team to keep their secret. (I changed Endgame because I can. Come at me. I might make it into chapters.)
Masterlist
‘It can’t be undone’ she said
You had gone through years with her. Years with the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy. You had gone through love with her. You had gone through the 5 years with her. You had gone to Vormir with her. Yet you had won the final fight without her.
When you all came back from the time travel success you had to try and keep yourself from collapsing. You saw the others standing with smiles on their faces but all you saw was her. Her lips and eyes pleading you to let her go. Her body descending forever. And her sprawled out onto the floor, a pool of blood surrounding her head confirming Natasha Romanoff no longer wondered the earth.
“Are you telling me this actually worked?” Rhodey questioned, followed by Thor’s wheezy laugh. Their faces became confused when they heard a long bang. You have dropped down onto your knees, stone in hand and body wet from wherever you had been teleported to after she had sacrificed herself.
“Y/n where’s Nat?” The big green guy said. Your eyes were stuck in front of you. A sorrowful look on your face. You couldn’t even move. You couldn’t speak. You could’ve all been there for hours or seconds. But Steve lifted you up by your arms and tried to read your expression. With the help of Nebula you were taken to your bedroom you shared with Natasha. The both of them tried to gently take you to the bed but instead you walked shakily to the bathroom and shut the door. Of course Steve was upset. He had a lost a part of his family. He had shed tears while he walked with you. He could only imagine what the scene must’ve been for yourself. The unspoken news of his friends death was indescribable, but having to be there in an unimaginable situation would’ve been even harder. And he understood that. Nebula grieved, she barely knew the woman. But she grieved. She saw the distraught and pain on your face and in your eyes. She placed her hand on Steve’s shoulder and took him out of your room.
In the bathroom you had caged yourself into. You had your hand gripped to the sink. Your eyes trained to the sink bowl. Your eyes drifted to the left for you where her makeup and hairbrush had been layed out this morning. You took a step back, nervously clasping your hands together. You tried to calm down before someone got hurt. You looked down at your hands and you were maintaining some level of sanity before you remembered that your hand had let her go. If anyone would walk past your bedroom door, they were bound to hear glass smashing and screams and words of anguish.
You didn’t speak to anyone. You completely shut yourself down. The only reason you spoke to someone was to communicate over the earpiece when you were fighting. There was a short debate over the coms as to who was going to steal the stones from Thanos. You nearly went into a fit of rage and upset before Carol ordered you to look into her eyes. Your excuse to use the stones was so you could be with her again. When Tony clicked his fingers the enemy became dust, and the world became a little more louder and a bit more lighter. The battlefield was filled with new and old faces. Tony’s snap had been so powerful he was able to bring back the people that mattered the most to those around him. Steve had Peggy in his tired arms. Clint had Laura and his children. Wanda had Vision. Quill had Gamora. Thor had his mother and brother back. Tony had Pepper. He was unharmed and Bruce’s arm had healed. Everyone had someone. You had someone. You had your whole family. But your special someone was Natasha. You had never felt so lost. Natasha would be holding you, you holding her. She would tuck your head into her shoulder while letting your arms envelope around her. But all you got were sad looks.
Some of the ‘newbies’ had questioned their closest. After a lot of loud whispering, there was silence. The battlefield was silent in memory of Natasha. The only noises were the hundreds of sniffles and sobs of those who had the news broken to them. The dying fires crackling. The next minute footsteps were approaching you. You had internally begged for it to be Natasha. But you looked up to see a short boy. His suit red and blue with a spider on it. His brown curly hair was tinted with grey. His teary eyes gave you the saddest smile before and steadily put his arms around your shoulders. You accepted the young boys embrace. You were thankful for it.
The news were around the place as quick as they could’ve been. Pictures were taken. Statements were took. The public had tried to surround the heroes but were pushed away by the helping police. It has been released to the enormous crowd that one of the most heroic heroes had died. The crowds became distraught. They sounded like how you felt inside. They tried to surround you and shout out their condolences but you kept walking. Where to? Who knows.
*2 years later/present time*
You spoke to no one. You spoke out in bursts of anger. Anger if someone tried to tell you to come away from your desk and to stop working and trying to find a way. Peggy, Steve’s wife, had became close to you. She understood how it felt to lose a loved one. She understood she wasn’t Natasha. She understood why you were working yourself so hard. She would never judge you, if you looked all disheveled or smelt from not taking a shower. She encouraged you to do your best, but she never pushed you. 2 years ago, you found a solution to stop Thanos. 2 years ago you lost her. 2 years ago Steve returned the stones. You haven’t been able to go through any videos or voice messages of her. Just a photo that you have framed. There were and still are memorials for her, but you would never attend any.
You had only cried to yourself. But right now you were on the edge of having a definite breakdown. Tony and the whole team of Avengers, Wakanda, GotG and Carol had wanted to check in as you had been back to Vormir. Which you greatly regret. Scott had made an extra time travel refill for you. All you were told by red skull was a ‘soul for a soul’. You argued with a ghost. You lashed out a ghost. You didn’t dare look to the edge. Knowing you would either throw yourself of or cry so much you wouldn’t be able to move.
They all met you at the Compound. At the platform that sat on top on the lake.
Tumblr media
Steve and Peggy. Tony and Pepper. Rhodes. Bucky and Sam. Clint and Laura. Thor and Loki. Bruce. The Guardians were there. Rocket was by your side. Peter was there with Happy. Carol was at the edge of the platform. Wanda and Vision. And the rest were all there. You had your back turned to them. You were silent trying to understand why they all had such guilty faces, except Thor. They all had a secret. One they had agreed to not tell you, for fear it may completely break you. But they decided enough was enough. They had to tell you.
“Look we need to get her back to stop this shit with the Avengers get it together.” Thor spat at Steve, as he still saw him as the Captain.
“Can’t get her back.” You spoke up, causing everyone’s attention on the two of you.
“Wh..wha..what are you..?” Thor mumbled out.
“It can’t be undone. It can’t.” You said quietly looking at him from over your shoulder.
He laughed at your words before saying, “Look.. I, I’m sorry but your a very earthly being okay, we’re talking about space magic and can’t seems very definitive. Don’t you think?”
“Yeah look I know that I’m way outside my.. my paid rate here. But she still isn’t here is she?” You said. Tony took of his sunglasses, getting upset.
“Yeah well that’s my point.” Thor said in a hushed manner.
“It can’t.. be undone.” Your voice cracking, your tears had crawled their way down your face now. “Or that’s at least what the red floating guy had to say. Maybe you wanna go talk to him. Ok, go grab your hammer and you go find him you talk to him!” You yelled at him. He looked down to the floor. You shouldn’t be angry with him. He missed Natasha. But you couldn’t help it.
“It was supposed to be me.” You admitted with a breaking voice. Bucky let a tear fall freely from his eye. “She sacrificed her life for that goddamn stone, she bet her life on it.” You started to breakdown in the middle of everyone. Angry at how she could’ve died for nothing. How it wasn’t supposed to be like this. Even Wanda began to breakdown. She felt your pain from far away. Your longing. And your grieving. Rockets fur was wet as he was upset just like everyone else.
He couldn’t take it anymore. The lies. Not the acting. But the lies. Clint stood up and said, “Y/n we’ve been lying to you. Natasha is here. She’s perfectly fine. She’s alive. You just can’t see her.” No one else bothered to look up as he said what was needed to be said. You slowly turned around to him. “What?” Was all you could choke out. Steve stood up and walked towards you before keeping a distance. “When I returned the stone. He told me that we could all get her back, after all it was a soul for a soul. But the one who travelled there has been cursed. You can’t see or hear her and I don’t know if you ever will. But she’s alive.”
You took time to observe his words.
She was standing in front of you. Her arms crossed but her eyes were stuck on your face that was wet from the tears you had cried. Your eyes brows moving in a sorrowful way. She wasn’t crying for herself no. She cried for you. For your pain. She had never seen you so upset. And because she had been with you ever since she got back, she’s had to watch you cry almost every day.
Natasha wishes you could see her. She has been next to you this whole time. She was gone a few hours and then she was back. She couldn’t find you and instead ran into Sam who held her tightly. Instead she sped off to Tony’s cabin where she found Bucky and Steve, who explained everything.
She wishes you could hear how proud she is of you. She wishes you didn’t have to see you break yourself and live in your mental anguish. It hurt her. Every night you fell asleep at your desk, she would drape a blanket over you, and almost cry at your confused state in the morning of who had been to your office and covered you.
She wishes you hadn’t been traumatised by her silly yet heroic actions. She wishes she could tell you how much she loves you and how she wants to be held by you and she wants you to be able to hear her words, “I love you.” The others heard it. But they didn’t dare tell you.
She was determined to get her words to you. If not by speaking to you then by page. Determined to prove that she was with you all of this time. She wants to tell you how much she loves you.
She wishes there was a way.

NIGHTMARE - THREE (BUCKY BARNES)
Tumblr media
THREE - LAST ONE STANDING
Last Part // Next Part // Masterlist
Tags: @writingsbychlo @bangtanxberm @calums-betch @ladyyystark @buckyys-doll @spideysimpossiblegirl @tgirljeep388
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x HYDRA!reader
Word Count: 10,287
Summary: Her short time of peace is brought to an abrupt end. After a small interaction with someone from her past, will Y/N keep her compsure long enough to complete the most conflicting mission of her career? Does she choose Nightmare and HYDRA or does she choose Steve and Y/N?
Notes: Can we talk about the quality of this gif? I’m obsessed!! Anyway, it’s a violent chapter (maybe blood mention) and talk of scars w/ mild cursing. Once again, blame Google if the Russian is bad :/
The next couple years left you in pieces. You were the product of an attempted chemical agent to dismantle free will. Lucky for you, it wasn’t perfected yet and the facility was destroyed before it could be. You remembered chasing down the plane of those who burned the building to ash, but they had just barely gotten away. You hadn’t thought about it much since, but every now and then you wonder what happened to the two little girls because you knew you didn’t kill them.
And while they could easily trigger a fully compliant Nightmare, it wouldn’t last forever. Y/N would come back naturally after a couple days, but every time it seemed to take a little longer for your brain to rebalance itself. You were always aware of what you were doing, acting purposefully in regards to the assignments you were given. You were intentionally looking to complete your missions and to complete them well, but you knew you didn’t want to. Only it wasn’t about what you wanted anymore. Sometimes on simple missions when you were Y/N acting as Nightmare, it was hard to tell what was fake and what wasn’t.
It wasn’t until Rumlow and Pierce were fundamentally running the show that you had some semblance of peace. They told you that they didn’t need Nightmare for now so you were able to be yourself. They expected your full cooperation if and when that time came and they told you to keep a low profile until then.
It was a relief to be in conscious control of your actions for the time being. The only pain now - other than the weight of what you’ve done - was the constant wonder of what was happening to James. Was he still in Siberia? Was he on ice? You hadn’t heard any new stories of the Winter Soldier so you assumed he was on stand-by. Though a small part of you hoped he got out, you dreaded the possibility that the Winter Soldier was gone entirely.
Your feet took you through the familiar halls of the Smithsonian without much of a thought. You passed by people and kids, enjoying the freedom. It was those kinds of situations that made you glad you had created Nightmare. You didn’t have to hide in public, to duck in alleyways and sink into shadows. The blood on your hands wasn’t visible to everyone without the mask on, and even then, most wouldn’t know what you’ve done. You - like the Winter Soldier - were passed off as a ghost story, a made up figure as HYDRA’s scare tactic.
That was almost true.
You wandered the known path to the ever-popular Captain America exhibit. It was busy as usual with kids on friend trips and soldiers, both enlisted and veterans. Everyone pushed through to read Steve’s biography and find a seat to watch the short film that featured Peggy Carter. You had seen the film a few times and it was nice to know that she didn’t spend her life stuck on him. Though truthfully, a part of you envied her. How nice would it have been for your head if you had been able to let go of those feelings for James? Your service to HYDRA would’ve been an achievement then rather than a burden. But maybe it was better that you had something to hold on to…
You replayed the familiar thought as you snuck through the nearly feral crowd of school age children. They clamored to the gift shop to see what Steve replica memorabilia they could buy. They screamed at each other and shoved each other as they bumped and tripped their way through the museum. You chuckled to yourself as the teacher frantically tried to control the rabid children. You, however, weren’t there for the cheap souvenirs or to hear a relatively mutilated recap of Steve’s story. A recap that didn’t include Nightmare.
You learned that the first day you visited and part of your ego was bruised a bit, but you supposed it made sense and was better for you. Peggy Carter and Howard Stark seemed to be the main sources for the exhibit so of course they had no real knowledge of you. And what they did know, they probably didn’t have much proof to show. So your existence was omitted completely.
There was a small display at the exhibit for James and the rest of his unit, the Howling Commandos, that you always found yourself at. You weren’t even sure if it was intentional or some subconscious attempt to bring back the boy who so easily held a candle in your lonely heart. You stood in front of his section and sighed inwardly, gently running your fingers over the plexiglass that covered his photo. You hadn’t seen James in so long, only the Winter Soldier and even that was years ago.
“Barnes is the only Howling Commando to give his life in service of his country.” The announcer ran through the familiar words.
Every time you heard that line it felt like a hot poker in your chest. You knew it was a lie. He was alive. It wasn’t much of a life, but he wasn’t dead, though you weren’t quite sure which was better. Selfishly, you tried to convince yourself that working for HYDRA was better than being dead, but that was only because that was the choice you had made when you were a child. You tried every day to reason that your lifestyle was better than death, but nearly everyday proved to give you nothing to support that claim. Maybe everything would’ve been better if you had chosen the other path and let your parents’ legacy end with them.
“You’re probably the first person I’ve seen over here.” A familiar voice came from your side and pulled you from your spiraling, pessimistic thoughts, making you pull your hand away quickly as if you were touching something you shouldn’t have. Something that wasn’t yours. “Well, to really stay over here for more than a minute..”
You turned quickly to see Steve standing beside you. He wore a cheap ball cap and had a pair of glasses tucked into his shirt collar, as if to hide from the public eye. You couldn’t help but smile softly at the sight. He was just as welcoming and warm as you remembered and you almost let yourself run into him for a hug. You noticed that time really hadn’t touched him while he was in the ice. Sure, you had seen the film and news stories from when the aliens came to New York years prior and he seemed like the old Steve, but seeing him in person, it really proved that physically, he was still the same.
You hadn’t seen Steve since the war. You had felt your heart drop when you heard that he didn’t make it off the plane that night. Part of you felt that you had sent Steve Rogers to his death by putting him on that plane, that that was the first real blood on Nightmare’s hands. But then, decades later, he was still alive. Preserved from his time and dropped into a whole new one.
“Yeah.” You said finally, after realizing you were taking too long to answer. “I’ve always liked this piece better… I prefer his story, but the ending is kinda unfair. The only Howling Commando not to make it back.”
“Why's that, if you don’t mind me asking.” Steve asked with a warm smile. He was touched that someone else cared for his friend’s story.
“Everyone cares about Steve, y’know? Yay, Captain America and all that.” You began with a shrug. “Not to say that I don’t care, but him- James Barnes.. Shouldn’t we care about him just as much?”
“A lot of good men died in that war…” He agreed sadly. “This group was probably some of the bravest men that fought.”
“Speaking from personal experience there, Captain?” You teased lightly. He chuckled and shook his head, as if in disbelief you knew. “The hat probably won’t work on someone shorter than you, which is almost everyone. But your secret’s safe with me.”
“Gotta try sometimes, right?” He laughed lightly.
“He was your best friend, right?” You nodded to the picture of James. He sighed regretfully - likely remembering the day James fell - and nodded. “Would it be weird if I said he’s very pretty?”
“Oh trust me, he knew.” Steve joked, making you laugh in return because you knew Steve was right. “He got almost every girl he wanted without having to try very hard.”
“Almost, hmm? Guess you can’t charm them all.” You tried to sound playful, but that line seemed to upset you a bit. If he got every girl he wanted, were you really that special?
“There was one girl, right before the war.” He explained. You listened intently while you watched the small screen play a quick video of James laughing with Steve. The wide smile on his face made your heart ache while it beat a little faster at Steve’s words.
God, when was the last time you heard James laugh? Seen a real, honest smile from him?
“Her name was Y/N Cervantes.”
You turned back to Steve quickly. You thought you were made. You didn’t have a cover story thought up already. You’d have to run. How quick could you get to the exit?
“He uh- He died in the fight before he could make it back to her..”
“I’m sorry to hear that. Were you friends with her too?” You spoke carefully, not allowing any emotion into your voice. Only innocent curiosity. You were interested to know what story Steve knew.
“A little bit, yeah.” He shrugged casually. “We didn’t get to hang out a lot before everything.” He gestured to himself.
“I’m sure she was proud of you both.” You wished you could tell him you were proud of him. “I doubt she ever forgot you… Or him. Especially with a heart like yours and a smile like his.”
“I tried looking her up when I got out of the ice, see if maybe she was still alive...” He began softly, regretfully almost. You felt the guilt stinging in your chest again. You never wanted to reveal yourself more than in those moments. “Never found anything. It was as if she never existed… Maybe I got her last name wrong, I don’t know.”
“Or maybe she just didn’t want to be found..” You offered. That part, at least, was true. Only Cervantes was never your last name. Y/L/N was the reality. He couldn’t find Y/N Cervantes because she never really existed outside of his memory. “Could've been too hard to lose you both so she started over somewhere new.”
“Y’know.. You seem familiar. Have we met before?” Steve asked suddenly. Making eye contact with him, you realized he was studying your face.
You knew you looked pretty much the same, only now you had a different haircut - longer with loose curls and face framing bangs and when he knew you, your hair was always neatly braided and pinned up. You wore little to no makeup and simple, nondescript clothes. You weren’t intended to stand out, you never were.
You laughed slightly with a small shrug, backing away a few steps after one last look at James’ smiling image. The potential recognition was your cue to leave. “Maybe you knew my grandma.” You joked and offered a lazy salute before leaving the exhibit.
You didn’t realize how nice it would feel to talk to someone as Y/N, talk to someone other than HYDRA operatives. And of all people, running into Steve Rogers felt like something more than just a chance occasion.
You wondered what else that interaction would lead to, what type of investigation into your sudden disappearance and questions would arise. You thought about if it could lead Steve to the HYDRA agents embedded into SHIELD, leading him to Nightmare. To you. It was too late to change any of it so you just had to trust that Steve would let it go. But something in your bones told you that you’d be seeing the Captain again. After all, he wasn’t the type to give up so easily.
When you got the call for an assignment, there were mixed feelings. The peace you had up until then had been nice but it made you uneasy. HYDRA wasn’t one to forget something as dangerous as yourself. You had begun to wonder if someone had gotten the entire organization exposed. But you dismissed that thought, knowing you would’ve seen something on the news about SHIELD’s big HYDRA bust, likely with Captain America leading the charge. You didn’t know how much of Y/N would be left when HYDRA inevitability goes down and you wouldn’t need to be Nightmare anymore but at least you didn’t have to face that yet.
You were given your assignment, head of SHIELD operations Nick Fury. You were told the plan, that undercover agents would pose as NYPD and attempt to end it before you had to get involved. But being that he was a high priority target, you were called for support. Not only you, but the Winter Soldier as well. It was a relief to know that nothing bad had happened to him, but you didn’t quite feel happy to see the Winter Soldier.
You and the Winter Soldier were waiting a few blocks away from the initial interception point. You were told that if things didn’t go as planned, they would lead him to you and you didn’t have a lot of faith in your associates. So you two waited in the alley until you heard anything. You watched the screen in your hand while you sat on a pile of discarded pallets, kicking your feet aimlessly.
“It hasn’t been too bad for you since they relocated me, has it?” You tried asking James as you waited for further instructions. You peaked up from your screen and saw he wasn’t looking at you.
He said nothing, only stood opposite of you and leaned against the wall behind him. His head was tilted down, either in thought or zoning out. You hopped off your seat and closed the distance, gently lifting his chin so he would look at you.
It must look odd to anyone else, two figures in dark clothing with masks covering their faces. One with a hood drawn to hide her eyes and the other with dark goggles to hide his. But in a world of Avengers, no one paid anyone a second glance.
“If only we could’ve gotten out together… Imagine that.” You said softly. He tilted his head in question and you let out a soft, defeated sigh. Your words were going in one ear and out the other, meaning nothing to him.
Your screen beeped before anything else could be said and when you looked down, you saw the red dot getting closer and closer. You glanced back to the Winter Soldier and nodded for him to follow you into the street as you shoved the device into a pocket. It was easy to locate the beat up SUV as it drew closer. Beside you, he lifted the massive gun and took the shot. The disc attached to the underside of the vehicle and blew, sending it toppling upside down.
He reached his arm out for you and pulled you to the side, out of the way of the now airborne vehicle. Using the material of your cloak after you unbuttoned it, you stood in front of him and pulled it up to block the smoke and loose gravel. You knew he didn’t care for the protection, but you hoped part of him was thankful.
You two moved through the smoke quickly, the gun in his hand and a blade now in yours after replacing your cloak. By the time you reached the vehicle, Fury was gone. He escaped through a hole he cut into the roof and went underground.
You slammed your blade into the tire and huffed in annoyance. He looked over at you and you wished he wasn’t wearing the goggles so you could see more of what he was thinking. It really annoyed you in moments like that. At least with your hood, people could still see your eyes at some point.
“Either we track him ourselves or we go back with nothing.” You said simply, yanking your blade free and shoving it into the back of your belt. “What’s it gonna be, Soldier? Your call.”
You held a hand out for him, asking him to follow you. You were afraid that if you went back with nothing, Pierce would shut you down and bring out Nightmare. He would think it was a flaw in Y/N’s thinking and that you purposefully let Fury get away. And you didn’t want to think what he would do to James.
After a moment, he took your hand and you let out a sigh of relief. You even smiled at him but you knew he didn’t see it. But maybe he saw it in your eyes.
You ignored the attempts Pierce made to contact you. Your phone’s screen flashed with his messages but you ignored them all, tapping to delete each one. It took the rest of the day, but you eventually found Fury in an apartment building on the other side of town.
He had the shot easily, but something told you to wait. You told him you wanted to see where he went, to see who would’ve helped him so you could see if they were a target as well. You pulled your binoculars from your small duffle and set up beside him, focusing on the apartment. It was too dark to see anything yet, until a momentary flick of light. It was enough for you to see him through the cracks in the blinds. Steve Rogers.
“Of course he went to the Captain.” You complained before shoving your binoculars away. You tightened the bag over your shoulder and turned to him. “Take the shot.”
Four shots rang out and you waited a moment but there was no response, no one looking through the window or yelling. So you and the Winter Soldier took off. As you two were leaving the rooftop, you heard the shatter of glass. Turning, you saw Steve jumping across the building gaps.
“Son of a bitch.” You groaned before turning back to your escape route. “The guy doesn’t know how to quit.” You complained as you caught up. He looked over in question and you simply waved him off.
You two jumped down to the next roof level and rolled through to get back to your feet. As you two were reaching the edge, Steve burst through the door a few behind you. You turned to say something but the Winter Soldier had his arm around your waist and pulled you away as Steve launched his shield.
It was caught easily by his metal arm. You dropped to your knee to allow him to throw it back hard enough to push Steve back.
“Nice to see you again, Captain.” You mocked before stepping backwards off the ledge. The Winter Soldier went with you before Steve could gather himself. You two were gone before he had a chance to look for you again.
You two had gotten back to your outpost and the HYDRA scientists were checking on you two. You waved them off and stood from your chair. You noticed they were rather cautious with him, examining him from a distance.
“Enough.” You announced, pushing past them. If they weren’t going to do the job right, they didn’t need to be there. You pulled off your gloves and tucked them into your belt as you moved in to take their place. “Leave us.”
“But-“ One of them tried weakly.
You turned quickly to face them, leaning in slightly to punctuate your words. They cowered back slightly and their eyes went wide with fear.
“That wasn’t a request. Leave.”
You stood between his legs, calmly reaching to take his mask off as everyone else cleared out. You smiled softly as you placed it on the small tray next to you. You picked up the small towel and dipped it in the water bowl before turning back to him. You placed one hand on his jaw while you wiped the black away from his eyes gently.
“Did you know him?” He asked softly.
“Know who?” You asked simply. “The workers? They must be some new recruits or transfers.”
“The guy with the shield.” He corrected.
“I did, yeah.” You confessed. You chose your words carefully to not push him in one direction or the other. There was an uncertain vulnerability in his eyes and though you ached to tell him the truth, you didn’t want to put him at risk. Not until you knew for sure you could get both of you away safely. “I met him before you joined us.. We didn’t really get along then either.” You joked.
“Who is he?”
“Captain America.” You switched hands to clean the other side of his face. You figured if you said Steve Rogers, it would trigger something that he couldn’t afford to be triggered. You could tell Pierce and Rumlow weren’t the type to handle things kindly, especially something like this. “Nice guy, just different sides... You’re staring.” You noted after a moment of silence between you two.
“Sorry.” He muttered, almost inaudibly. “Can I.. Can I ask you something?”
“Of course.” You nodded, tossing the now smudged black rag to the tray. You turned your attention back to him, placing your hands on your lower back and tilting your head in interest. “Ask me anything.”
You figured he would ask something about you. Your past, or maybe about his. Usually, when you two were alone, he asked a couple questions that you could answer vaguely. You didn’t know what answers survived HYDRA’s tortures and which were gone, and though you shouldn’t, you didn’t mind indulging him in some truths every now and then. If you couldn’t tell him everything, then he deserved the truths you could tell him.
“Did I know you before? I just-  I can’t get over how familiar you are...”
“Is that what you see when you look at me?” You asked gently, kneeling in the space you were standing. You crossed your arms over his lap and leaned your chin on your forearms while you waited for a response.
“Someone I should know…”
You nodded slowly as you leaned back, a gentle smile playing on your hidden features. He had asked you that a couple times. Whether he wasn’t sure or if it was something he just liked to hear, you didn’t know. You never asked. You kinda liked that you were what he always wanted to know about, but you wish you didn’t have to reintroduce yourself to him… You wanted him to hold on to your memory the way you held on to his.
“Before these?” You tapped his metal arm with one hand and your own face mask with the other. He nodded quietly, bracing himself for your answer. “Yeah, we knew each other a little bit… That’s the theory on why you trust me so much and so easily. I always cleaned you up and helped train you when I was around. Why do you think we work so well together?”
You watched a small smile cross his face. Almost a smile of relief. You had left your hand on his forearm while you spoke, a small gesture that you paid no mind to because you didn’t think it meant much. But to James, it showed that you weren’t scared of him the way everyone else seemed to be and that meant more than he could ever really explain.
“You’re not scared.” He commented.
You almost laughed. “I know you wouldn’t hurt me..” You said reassuringly. “I trust you, J-“ You stopped and cleared your throat. “I trust you.” You nodded.
“I don’t know your name.” He said, almost as it was a confession.
“Don’t feel bad.” You shrugged, hoping to offer some sort of consolation as you stood. You understood it was your choice - and it was probably for the best - but that didn’t mean you didn’t yearn to hear a certain broad-chested, blue eyed, brunette say it. “No one does… I’ll tell you one of these days.”
Meanwhile, Steve was following up on his own hunch. He went back to the hospital for the flash drive he had hidden in the vending machine days prior, only to find out Natasha took it. After a quick, tense conversation, Steve was able to get something on the mystery shooter and his mouthy accomplice.
“I know who killed Fury.” Natasha admitted, making Steve hesitate. “Most of the intelligence community doesn’t believe he exists. Those that do call him the Winter Soldier. He’s credited with more than two dozen assassinations in the last fifty years. And if he’s around, there’s a girl that’s usually with him that’s at least twice as brutal.”
“Yeah, Nightmare.” Steve finished. “She was HYDRA during the war but she wasn’t anything like that. She had a good heart back then.”
“People change.”
“Not that much.”
“I did.”
“Your guy- He just sounds like a ghost story.”
“Five years ago, I was escorting a nuclear engineer out of Iran.” Natasha explained. “Somebody took out my tires near Odessa. We lost control, went right over a cliff. I pulled us out but the Winter Soldier and Nightmare were there. I covered my engineer and he shot him through me. Soviet slug, no rifling. Bye bye bikinis.”
“Yeah, I bet you look terrible in them now.” He mocked.
“Going after them is a dead end. I know, I’ve tried.” She tried. “There’s nothing on Nightmare other than her kill record, which is extensive. No name, no face. Only a mask and hood and expertise in almost any weapon imaginable. If she was your friend, she’s not anymore.”
“And what about him? Nothing?”
“They make one hell of a tag team because they don’t care about the mess they leave behind. You don’t want to get involved in that, Steve.”
“Let’s find out what the ghosts want.”
A couple days later, you got word from Rumlow that the Black Widow and the Captain went to Camp Lehigh. They activated the old Zola program and would likely be going after one of the embedded HYDRA agents to get more information. You went to Pierce’s home that night at his request and waited quietly. If Pierce wanted to keep HYDRA’s power, he’d need to make a decision quick.
The Winter Soldier sat at the table with his gun laid out but you weren’t quite sure if he was intended to use it on Pierce or if he just had it out. You stood behind him with an arm on his shoulder while the other hand absentmindedly toyed with a blade, flipping it and spinning it over your knuckles. He came without his mask but you, of course, never left without it. You waited for his housekeeper to leave before speaking.
“Want some milk?” Pierce offered.
“Who drinks straight milk?” You rolled your eyes.
“Our window is limited.” He explained, ignoring your comment. “Two targets, level six.”
“Who?”
“Don’t worry about that. They already cost me Zola.”
“Bullshit.” You laughed. “You sent us after Fury and the Captain was there, which you didn’t warn us about but I have a feeling you knew would happen. Two level six targets? I want to know who they are or I won’t do it.”
“You really want to go this route?” He stood before you. “It’s very easy to make you change your mind.”
“Tell me who they are.” You said firmly despite the jump in your pulse.
He turned to the Winter Soldier. “Shut her up.”
You looked down at him as well with raised brows, waiting for him to move. The Winter Soldier simply looked at you, tilted his head in silent examination, and turned back to Pierce, completely unamused. You nearly laughed at how deadpan his expression was.
“Are you listening?” Pierce tried.
“He won’t hurt me.” You said proudly. “We were made to be partners, ‘an unstoppable team’ as Zola so constantly put it. Of course there’d be precautions so we wouldn’t be turned against each other, since people like you have agendas and agendas change. He won’t hurt me and I won’t hurt him.” Not that you wanted to, but Pierce didn’t need to know that. “Don’t you feel stupid?” You mocked.
“I want death confirmed in ten hours.” He continued his original instructions.
“And I want to know who they are.”
“You don’t need to-“
You slammed your blade into the table, less than an inch away from his hand. He stared at you in disbelief while you met his eyes with a serious glare. The stare down lasted only moments, but you could feel the Winter Soldier tensing beside you. If Pierce made any action to hurt you, you knew James would come to your aid.
“Am I scaring you yet, hmm?” You chuckled darkly. That was one of the moments where that definitive line didn’t seem to exist. “Oh, I should play along, act like you’re a tough guy, right?”
“We all have our roles to play in this organization.” He tried to reason.
“We’ve paid our dues.” You said seriously as you leaned forward and flattened both palms against the table. “Tell us. I can promise you, you won’t like me when I’m mean.”
Before Pierce could reply, his housekeeper came back in. You turned to her and saw her eyes go wide with fear. Admittedly, the scene probably was terrifying for someone who didn’t know. It was probably even more terrifying to those who did know too. Pierce picked up the gun and shot her twice without a second thought. You never understood how someone could be so heartless but it was HYDRA after all.
“Ten hours.” He repeated.
“I’ll do it in twelve.” You countered easily as you put your blade back in it’s rightful place.
“I said ten.”
“And I said twelve. If you won’t tell me who we’re after before we get there, I’m not doing it in your timeframe.” You shrugged. “Call it a compromise.”
“Give me one good reason why I shouldn’t say the words.”
“If you really wanted to-” You realized with a slight laugh. “-you would’ve already… You either don’t remember them or can’t say them since you don’t know Spanish… You have nothing to use against me.”
“I have him.” He said slowly, pointing to the Winter Soldier. “Something tells me that I can use him to get to you, can’t I?”
“Twelve hours.” Was all you answered with. You knew your avoidance was enough of an answer, but you wouldn’t dignify that accusation with any real words.
The next day, you and the Winter Soldier found yourselves on a highway bridge. The first target you were told about was Jasper Sitwell, a HYDRA agent who spilled the beans to Captain America and the Black Widow. You were utilizing the suction palm gloves to keep yourself on top of the speeding SUV.
“I’ll follow your lead.” You leaned forward to tell him. He turned to look at you but his expression was hidden behind his goggles again.
He landed with an audible thud and you saw Sitwell’s body be yanked from the car. He was thrown into traffic on the opposite side of the divider and that was the end of that leak. You watched from your position as he stood on the roof and began firing into it. The car suddenly came to a stop and he was thrown off.
You watched as he rolled to a quick kneel and used his metal arm to slow his slide. You smiled proudly as you remembered when you taught him that maneuver. Your SUV slammed into the back of the car and the Winter Soldier jumped over to the top of the car again. He reached his hand through the windshield for the steering wheel before turning back to the SUV.
You released the suction in your palm to allow yourself to slide to the hood. Replacing the suction to the windshield, you reached out for his hand. He took it - though you doubted he needed it - and let you pull him to you. You two watched as the car spun out of control after your SUV slammed it again.
“They bailed.” You said with a mock pout as you saw three figures escape the now airborne car.
You two jumped off the hood when the SUV came to a stop and one of the agents sent with you handed the Winter Soldier an explosive launcher. You pulled your stun gun from your belt and followed his lead. He shot at Steve, who was sent flying off the bridge. You almost laughed at how cartoon-ish it looked.
Truthfully, you didn’t want to kill Steve or the Black Widow or their new friend. But you knew Rumlow would likely show up at any moment and if you didn’t look the part, they’d use James against you. You had to protect him.
While you got closer to the Widow and their friend, the four agents sent to assist were firing nonstop. You waited until you had a clear shot because emptying bullets into cars did nothing but keep them in hiding. He fired again which made her jump the barrier and the third sent her over the edge. He traded to a different rifle as he approached the edge from your side.
You pushed your hood back before you peered over and down, waiting to see the Widow. He was scanning for the Captain so he didn’t see her beneath him. You were quick to kneel out of the way and reached for him as you went down. A bullet caught his goggles as he dropped so he pulled them off in annoyance as they were now cracked.
You swung a leg over his so you could kneel in the open space between his knees. You quickly checked the side that got hit and the other side, using one hand to push his hair from his face. His eyes seemed to soften a bit when they met yours, which you were sure betrayed the concern you had. He nodded, telling you he was okay. So you patted his cheek - or you should say his mask - and moved out of his way.
He stood and began firing over the edge, disregarding the fact that other people could’ve gotten hit instead. The Widow fired at him as soon as she saw him, but you stayed low. You held yourself just high enough that your line of sight and elbows cleared the concrete barrier and aimed for the Widow.
You shot the energy beam at her and hit her square in the chest. The blast was strong enough to send her flying back, likely knocking the air from her chest. It would take her a minute to recover from that.
“Я возьму ее. Ты его находишь.” You told the Winter Soldier as you hopped up to the top of the concrete and tucked your gun into its holster.  (I’ll take her. You find him.)
“то случилось с моим руководством?” He replied flatly and grabbed at your wrist. (What happened to following my lead?)
“А, ну…” You began, turning to face him. “Думаю, ей будет весело, как в Одессе.” You winked before stepping backwards. (Ah, well… I think she’ll be fun, just like in Odessa.)
You spun quickly and landed light on your feet on the ground. You heard a heavy crash beside you and when you looked, he had landed on a car roof and collapsed it.
“Was that necessary?” You teased with an eye roll. “I taught you better than that.”
He waved you off and nodded for you to go ahead.
“We go together.” He said simply.
You went to where you saw the Widow hit the ground but she was gone. You let out a huff of annoyance and gripped your stun gun once again. You moved carefully, listening for steps or bumps into vehicles or the click of a gun. He tapped your arm to get your attention and pointed in the direction of a voice.
He knelt down and you stayed standing, your back to him so you could watch for any surprises. He rolled one of the compact explosives you designed in the direction of the voice. Once it went off, she came from your direction.
She kicked your gun out of your hand and grabbed the back of your neck. She threw herself around and climbed up your shoulders. She kept one knee bent behind your shoulders, the other hooked around your arm. She used a wire in an attempt to choke you, but you managed to get your forearm underneath it in time.
You backed up until you came in contact with a car to brace your back. You reached up and gripped her jacket sleeve. You threw yourself forward through a hard tumble but let go of her sleeve once you felt her leg unhook from your arm. She went flying into the next car while you came up in a crouch. You looked up to see a small disc coming to his metal arm, releasing an electrical current that disabled his arm.
You reacted after only a second’s hesitation and moved to pull the disc off. A small shock went through your glove as you crushed the device before you tossed the disc aside. He stared at the ground for a moment, as if in shock of what just happened. He shook it off after a moment and rotated his arm quickly before nodding to you that he was good before you could ask. You both grabbed your guns again and went after the Widow.
As she ran through the crowd, she warned as many of them as she could. He fired a shot through her shoulder and she had to duck behind a car. He climbed on a trunk to end it when Steve came barreling in. You pulled the barrel of his gun towards where Steve was coming from to change his attention and save the Widow.
You fired your stun gun at Steve, causing a falter in his step but not enough to stop him since he had his shield up. You fired again before you spun out of Steve’s way just in time for the Winter Soldier to throw a solid punch that Steve blocked with his shield. The Winter Soldier pushed the shield to the side and landed a hard front kick that sent Steve flying back. He fired off more rounds, using two additional guns.
“Enough with the guns!” You complained loudly, shoving your own weapon back into its holster. Though he didn’t look at you, you knew he heard you and was likely annoyed by your comment. You glanced back to where the Widow had hid but you couldn’t see her anymore.
The two began going hand to hand, him catching the shield and flipping Steve over. You moved in then, meeting Steve with a swift hook kick. The shield was taken out of Steve’s hands so you used that opening to your advantage. While the Winter Soldier had the shield and used it against Steve, you kept applying pressure.
You connected with a quick combo of body shots, ducking Steve’s sloppy swings. You caught one of Steve’s punches and twisted his arm outward. You drove your elbow down into his arm and then back against his jaw. You dropped so the Winter Soldier could land a solid jab to his chest.
You reached up for Steve’s shirt and pulled him down while you rolled to your back, getting your feet between your bodies. You extended your legs hard and released his shirt to send him flying into the side of a car while you continued your momentum through a backwards tumble.
Steve ran back in quickly and he was met with his own shield being thrown at him. He had no choice but to dodge and let it be wedged in the back of a van. You pulled a knife from the holster at the front of your leg and ran back to meet Steve. You were behind the Winter Soldier so when he heard your feet coming, he ducked and allowed you to roll over his back for a long attempted slash while he pulled a blade of his own.
You both alternated between swipes and stabs at Steve, who could only attempt to dodge and block your quick attacks. There was a point where you and the Winter Soldier were almost crossed up so you both tossed your blades over the other’s arm and switched so you wouldn’t lose momentum. You were impressed by the small trick, considering you two had never practiced anything like that.
There was a small opening for Steve while you pulled your arm back that he landed a sharp jab to your nose. Even with your mask, you felt it crack. It wasn’t long before the blood began to leak to your mouth and the sharp contact brought a few tears welling in your eyes. The cheap shot served as a slight distraction and the Winter Soldier was sent flying by one of Steve’s kicks.
Steve came in quick with a knee that connected and forced James back against a truck. He blocked Steve’s next punch and you inserted yourself back into the action. You came up from behind and kicked out the back of Steve’s knee. Once he dropped to a kneel, you put your hands on your shoulders to brace yourself as you jumped up to hook your legs around his neck.
You twisted your body around and threw yourself back. Once the motion was started, you released your legs and braced yourself to hit the ground. But you didn’t. You were caught by your partner while Steve was sent rolling away.
“This is fun.” You told him as he set you back on your feet. “We’re doing great.”
He rolled his eyes in what you assumed was amusement before getting back into the fight. Steve went straight for the Winter Soldier and the two traded blows for a minute until Steve caught him by the arm and flipped him to his back. You quickly grabbed the second knife from your holster and flung it so it would zip right by Steve’s head as a distraction. It gave your partner enough time to get up and grab Steve by the throat and throw him over the car.
You both moved over the car and attempted to land a devastating blow, but Steve was able to roll out of the way so all that resulted was a divot in the asphalt. He got to his feet quickly and you moved in before the Winter Soldier could. You threw shots at each other that the other seemed to counter easily and all it did was make you more annoyed. You brought your knee up into his stomach and once he doubled over, you followed with the same knee to his chin. You had to spin quickly out of the way to allow your partner to move in, knife in hand.
He connected a solid front kick before attempting to use the knife. Steve barely caught it in time and redirected the blade into the van he was pinned against. Steve moved down the side of the van and straight into the right hook you had waiting for him. He grabbed his shield and smacked you with it before moving back into his fight with James.
After a quick minute, he was able to flip him over his shoulder and the move caused his mask to come off. You froze for a minute, anxious to see what would happen. You had no idea what to expect. All you could do was move from the ground to your partner's side. When he turned to face Steve, the blond instantly straightened in disbelief.
“Bucky?” Steve asked wildly. “What did you do to him?” He accused you.
“That hurts my feelings.” You answered easily. “I’ve been good to him, Captain.”
“Who the hell is Bucky?” He asked quickly before he pulled a gun. You weren’t sure if you were relieved with that reaction or disappointed.
You heard a sudden whoosh and pulled him to the ground, narrowly missing Steve’s new friend. When you both stood, he looked back at Steve with confusion plain on his face before he raised his gun again. He realized the Widow before you did so this time, he was the one to pull you to the ground while used his metal arm to block any debris that came from the Widow’s shot at you with one of the discarded explosive launchers.
“We have to go.” You told him quickly as you heard the sirens. “The STRIKE team will take it from here.”
With one hesitant look back, he nodded in agreement and let you take his hand. You threw your hood back on and ran before the smoke could clear. You paused when you were a good distance away to turn back and see what happened. Steve, the Widow, and the new guy were taken into custody. There was a moment where it seemed like it would be an execution instead of an arrest, and you knew you couldn’t let that slide, but Rumlow stopped that before it got too far. So you turned your attention back on your escape and began running once again. You didn’t have time to wait.
You and James made your way to the underground lockup where you were told to go after the mission. You were examined by the doctors and cleared to resume whatever action you were needed for next. You watched their bustle and fuss around James. You stayed close by and remained silent while they worked to repair his arm. Your eyes travelled along the seam of the arm, where it met his chest. You looked at the scar and tried to remember if it had always been so prominent. It almost looked like he had been cawing at it at some point. You stepped closer for a better look when you felt an unpleasant but familiar tingle in your nose. As a kid, you would get nosebleeds due to the dry air so you knew what it felt like when the leftover blood and the slimy clot was ready to go.
“Can I get a tissue?” You asked instead of mentioning the scar, reaching one hand to the sensors in your mask.
You were handed a tissue without anyone lifting their head to see you. You rolled your eyes as you took it, thinking that they could at least pretend to care.
You turned your back to everyone and repositioned your hood before removing your mask. You blew your nose forcefully to get the remaining blood and clot out of your nostril. You heard the gate open as you were folding the tissue to trash it. Without realizing your mask wasn’t on, you turned to see Pierce and Rumlow entering.
You tossed the tissue in the trash and dropped your eyes to replace your mask. However, you couldn’t hide your face before James saw. You caught his expression change from your peripherals and felt your stomach sink as you fit the metal to its usual position.
He knew.
He had to. All those times of your truth being at the edge of his thoughts, knocking on the door for him to answer. It was always just out of reach but now that he saw the entirety of your face… It was impossible for you to disregard. You had given yourself away.
“You good over there, Nightmare?” Rumlow asked as your eyes lingered on James while you saw he was processing your face. He was trying to figure out who you really were. You shook your focus quickly and turned to face Rumlow. You dropped your hood as you answered.
“Yeah, I’m fine.” You nodded. “The Captain got me in the face with the shield so I was checking for anything broken.”
“Ain’t that what the mask is for?” Rumlow scoffed.
“Not quite but it’s not like any of you listen to me anyway.” You mumbled
Pierce waved for everyone to drop their guns as he got deeper into the room. You moved closer to James, your hands folded neatly behind your back while you watched Pierce carefully.
“Mission report.” Pierce asked. Neither of you gave a response, but you could tell he wasn’t asking you. You put a hand on James’ shoulder gently but got no response. “Mission report now.”
“Sitwell is dealt with.” You spoke up as he moved closer. He leaned forward in front of James and didn’t acknowledge your words. “STRIKE intercepted the Captain, the Widow, and their new friend. The Widow left with a gunshot wound to the-“
Your words were cut off as Pierce connected a quick backhand to your partner’s face. You acted without a thought, grabbing his wrist and twisting it outward. You slammed your foot to his knee and connected a right hook of your own. You heard the guns click and glanced up to see every barrel pointing at you. You had to quickly calculate the risk and you decided you were going to flesh the instance out. How long exactly would they let you go until they try to stop you? And how ruthless would they actually be?
“Let him go, Nightmare.” Rumlow instructed. You lifted your head and saw his pistol aimed at you. You quirked a brow in challenge and twisted Pierce’s arm out further, causing him to groan in pain. “Let him go!” He yelled.
“How pathetic.” You mocked and wrapped the fingers of your free hand around his throat, squeezing slightly. “For us to work for a man who can’t even defend himself.. My partner and I can bring the god of war to his knees and when there’s hell to pay, they’re cursing our names. Yet we are at the mercy of Alexander Pierce… Go ahead and pull the trigger, Rumlow.” You urged with a challenging twitch of your brow. “He’d be dead before you got the shot off.”
“She’s right.” Pierce tried and clawed at the hand you had around his throat. “Put the guns down.”
Once the guns were lowered, you leaned forward to whisper in Pierce’s ear. “You touch him again and I will kill you. I don’t care who’s around.” You threatened lowly before pushing him away.
“You all should know by now.” You announced as you moved to take your place besides James again, holding your head high. “You treat us both with respect, or I won’t hesitate to put you on your ass in front of everyone. Or else you’ll regret doing the Devil dirty. And there is nothing I do better than revenge.”
“The man on the bridge.” James spoke up gently. “Who was he?”
“You met him earlier this week on another assignment.” Pierce answered simply.
“It’s more than that.” You mumbled.
“I knew him.” James mumbled. “And I know you.” He turned his head to you.
“Yeah..” You nodded sadly. “You know me.”
“Your work together has been a gift to mankind.” Pierce tried to redirect the conversation away from his memories, and you wanted to punch him again but you decided not to tempt Rumlow’s trigger happy fingers. So you stood by your partner and let him talk. “You’ve shaped the century. And we need you two to do it one more time. Society is at a tipping point between order and chaos so tomorrow morning, we have to give it a push.”
“You can’t seriously believe that.” You laughed.
You had reached a tipping point of your own. You had gone through a lot and did everything HYDRA had asked of you for decades. But you had enough. You couldn’t sit there and follow orders anymore. You were tired of the lies, of the blood you had to spill. You were tired of being on your own because of what you had done.
It felt like mania, like you had finally snapped. It was terrifying but also freeing. You hadn’t stopped to think of what could happen to you, what Pierce or Rumlow could do. Would they put you through the same torture they put James through? Would they find a way to make James kill you, something slow and agonizing? Or would they do it themselves?
Pierce didn’t have the stomach for it and Rumlow favored brute force. If anything, you thought they’d tie your hands behind your back and let the STRIKE team beat the hell out of you. They’d beat you within an inch of your life and find a way to get the Winter Soldier to finish it. Maybe if they mangled your face beyond recognition, he wouldn’t know it was you. Maybe they could turn him against you if they were desperate enough.
“Choose your next words carefully, Nightmare.” Pierce warned.
“Or what?” You challenged, taking a few steps to put yourself between Pierce and James. “We’re so fucking mean and elitist. Your proposal is insane! God, I fell for all the flamethrowers and the tech, the circuit boards and rocket ships. If only you could be what you pretend you are.”
“That’s enough!” Pierce exclaimed.
You were met with a sharp backhand, but it didn’t stop your mouth. Your words were already spilling out. Nothing could stop you now. You heard the rustling behind you but you used a hand behind your back to tell him to wait. If you could draw the brunt of his wrath, maybe James could get out of it unscathed. It wasn’t his fault you had enough.
“You forgot I fight back.” You said with a tilt of your head before you landed a hard right hook. “You should know that I can take a beating. I do this all the time.”
One of the nearby STRIKE members slammed the butt of his rifle against your jaw and your stance faltered. You quickly gathered your wits and kicked out at his chest, sending him flying into the wall behind him.
“My position was earned by blood so I might deserve your fate or worse.” You admitted with a nod as you surveyed the rest of the men in the room. “As someone guilty of the game, if any girl on earth should get to make a call about this, it’s me. And as I see it, you’re a dick.”
“Enough!” He shouted again over you.
“You think you can tear humanity apart with the same machines that should’ve been a brand new start!” You yelled, voice breaking. “So fuck your rockets and your tricks. This entire operation is pathetic!”
“And yet here you are.” He said simply. “Hiding behind a mask, behind a persona you created so you didn’t have to own up to what you’ve done.”
“I know what I’ve done.” You said carefully, backing away to your original position. “And I’ve tried to make up for it in whatever ways I can.”
“You need to do your part so I can do mine.” He said firmly. “So HYDRA can give the world the freedom it deserves.”
“And yet we have none.” You scoffed. “Our hands are the bloodiest and yet we get the least freedom!”
“But I knew him.” James said again. You placed a hand on his shoulder in an attempt to comfort him. He looked up at you with a sad smile as his hand reached across for yours without thinking of the consequences. He was relieved that you were there for him, there to support him and not dismiss him.
“Prep him.” Pierce said suddenly as he stood to leave.
“You can’t.” You replied in terror, gripping his hand tightly. “He’s been out of cryo too long… The man you get out may not be someone you can control. The effects could be devastating… I won’t let you do that to him.”
“Then wipe him and start over.” He looked you dead in the eyes. “And I want her to press the button.”
“I won’t do that either.” You said softly. “I won’t. I don’t care what you do to me anymore. I’m done hurting him.”
“Like I said…” He said simply, spreading his arms in a grand gesture. “I can use him-“ He pointed to James. “-to get to you.” He pointed to you.
Pierce looked over to Rumlow, who hesitated for a moment before nodding. A small sigh seemed to leave him before he turned his attention to you.
“Solo. Perfeccionado.” He said carefully. You instantly felt the pressure building in your head but you fought it. You fought to keep control of your mind but you couldn’t combat the chemical imbalance for long. “Trece. Sombras.”
You cried out in pain as the pressure grew. Your stomach twisted to the point you wanted to vomit. You could barely breathe under your mask but you refused to remove it. Your knees shook and begged to collapse but you forced yourself to stand, to try and fight it. You wouldn’t give them the satisfaction of unmasking Nightmare.
“Please stop.” You begged as you pressed your hands to your ears in a pathetic attempt to block the words. “Please!”
“Enigma. Dos. Servicial. Aventurera.” Rumlow continued. You were nearly lost, kicked to the backseat while Nightmare was the new driver. “Uno. Pesadilla.”
You let out one more cry, your hands holding either side of your head. You stared at the ground as the tears welled in your eyes. Then suddenly, it was gone.
You lifted your head as the tears fell, the last thing Y/N had to offer the scene.
“Welcome back, Nightmare.” Pierce smiled deviously.
“Good to be back.” You said confidently, flicking the tears away in annoyance. How pathetic to cry in front of everyone. “What’s the assignment?”
“Tomorrow morning, HYDRA will give the world the freedom it deserves.” He explained again. “You two will have a part to play in that, if you’re willing.”
Your hands were folded behind your back as your head was high as Pierce spoke to you. You kept your attention forward, so you didn’t see the Winter Soldier looking at you. There was a sadness in his eyes, one you would’ve attributed to your mentality switch. He recognized there were two different versions of Nightmare, one more deadly than the other. One with less restraint than the other. But he had never seen the switch happen. He definitely preferred the other version.
“Of course, Sir.” You nodded eagerly. “And until then?”
“Wipe him and start over.” He pointed to your partner.
Without a word, you turned and held a hand out for the mouth guard. With the other hand, you pushed on his chest to make him lean back in his chair.
“I know you.” He said quietly before you put the guard between his teeth. As you moved to place the mouth guard between his teeth, you caught an angry, almost spiteful, expression on your partner’s face. It was as if he was trying to get through to her, to Y/N, even though he didn’t really know her. And he was angry that he didn’t.
“Of course you do.” You nodded. It almost gave him hope. “I’m your partner.”
You moved away and went to the computer screen, first pressing the button to trigger the arm restraints. You then hit the button to begin the process. Once the machine began to whir, your feet were taking you out of the room. It was if your body wanted to run before you heard him scream, but Pierce caught you by your arm.
“I think you should stay for this.” He said, turning you around so you saw what was happening.
There were no words you could say. His screams echoed through the yellow room and you had to turn away. You closed your eyes in regret and flinched from his cries of pain, remembering the way he screamed as he fell from the train all those years ago. You normally didn’t care who cried out and what pain you caused people. Nightmare wasn’t supposed to care. But for some reason that escaped you at that moment, you didn’t want to hear his cries. Maybe it was something leftover from Y/N.
“This is sick.” You whispered to yourself in a horrifying realization.
There was a sharp pain in your head, but you did your best to ignore it. You couldn’t show anything to Pierce or Rumlow. They’d only make it worse for you. You could feel your systems trying to correct the switch, trying to rebalance your head to center Y/N at the controls. But Y/N would only get killed if she showed up now so you forced her back.
“What was that?” Pierce asked.
“Should do the trick.” You replied tensely. “I’ve never seen it done before… I don’t think I like how it sounds. How he sounds…”
“You’ll get used to it.”
“No.” You shook your head. “I don’t think I will.”
“Tomorrow morning.” He patted your back. “Both of you.”
“Yessir.”

Ever since Steve had come out of the ice all those years ago, his only goal had been to get back to her. A home that was waiting and forgetting him all at once. She was there, and if it was the last thing he did, he would be too.
So, when the opportunity presented itself, when he could actually find his long lost love, you already knew he had made the decision before the words fell from his lips.
You knew. But god, that didn't make it any easier.
You hadn’t meant for it to happen, falling in love with the world's most unavailable man. In every sense of the word, it was an accident.
And yet, there you stood, eyes trained on his face as he laughed with his friends. The sound ripping through you like it always did. For the past week you had been trying to memorize the sound. The way it filled the room, pulling smiles from everyone who heard it.
You hadn’t meant to fall in love with Steve Rogers, but that is exactly what you did.
“Ya know,” Bucky’s gravely voice started behind you, pulling your attention away from Steve and towards his friend. “If you're planning on telling him, I’d do it now.”
You furrowed your brow at the brunette, a false confusion clouding your eyes. You shook your head, only pulling a scoff from his stubble framed lips.
“Don’t play that with me. I see the way you look at him.” He smiled softly, watching as your eyes flicked back to the godlike man.
Bucky was only trying to help. But in your case, you were just too late. You had your moment. Several if you were being honest. Steve deserved someone who wasn't afraid to tell him how they felt. Someone strong and brave.
Someone like Peggy Carter.
“I missed my chance.” You hummed, taking a sip from the bottle of stale beer in your hand. You grimised at the bitterness, the liquid courage doing nothing for your spirit. Only serving as a half assed reminder of what a coward you really were.
How many times had those three words almost fallen from your mouth? How many moments passed- longing stares and lingering touches? Surely too many to keep count. But it didn't change the truth.
He didn't love you, and he was leaving.
“I think that he deserves to know what he’s leaving behind.” Bucky whispers against your ear, the words pulling at your heart.
Only you and he knew the truth. Today was not a celebration of wins… It was a send off.
“He deserves to be happy.” You choked out, your eyes meeting Steves from across the room, his softening when he was your hollow form. You faked a smile, though it didn't fool the Captain as he began to make his way over to you.
“And what about you?” You snapped your head to meet Bucky, your eyes serious and tone stern.
“Stop it. Please.”
Bucky raised his hands in surrender, taking a step back as Steve approached you. His voice calling your name melted over you like honey in tea. So sweet, but always ready to burn if not careful.
You met his gaze, his blue eyes sparkling down at you, inviting you in. You could drown in the oceans of his iris, in fact, you had on many occasions. Tonight was no exception.
“Could I steal you away for a moment?” He asked, his voice cutting through your thoughts, coated in kindness.
The moment his eyes met yours, you were a goner. A mess from the second he said your name. It was pathetic, but then again, isn’t that what you were? Doomed from the first day he walked into your life, taking up every thought in your head.
“Of course.” You tried to smile, forcing it on your quivering lips. You hoped Steve didn’t notice, and of course, he didn’t. He never noticed. If he had, perhaps you wouldn’t be in this mess.
Steve pulled you along, hand in hand as he led your outside into the night. Darkness acting as a veil covering your hurt. Part of you wanted to scream. Needed it. Though, it wouldn’t do much now.
“Do you remember when we first met?” His question echoed around you, pulling you to the memory of your first encounter.
Of course you remembered. It replayed in your head like a broken record every night. A thousand ‘what if’s’ swirling around the memory.
The day he asked you to dance at one of Tony’s elaborate fundraisers for charity. He was like something out of a dream, the way he walked across that dance floor to you. The way his voice asked that daunting question. The way you swooned the moment his hands touched yours, pulling you in and spinning you around the room.
It all felt so distant now. As if you had made the entire thing up in your head.
Sometimes you wish you had.
“I remember you being a terrible dancer.” You joked, worrying on your bottom lip as Steve's laugh echoed around you.
“See, that's the problem. I don’t have much practice and I owe a dame a dance.” His words were sincere and yet dripped in venom. They cut you deep, poison darting straight to your heart.
“You want me to help you… Dance?” You tried not to let your face show how truly hollow you felt.
You had to force yourself not to cringe away when he took your hand, pulling you gently against his chest. You could have died right there, drowned in your own self loathing, overcome with jealousy for a woman who, at this very moment, was nothing more than a tombstone. She was gone, nothing but a memory and still- Steve picked her.
With a broken breath, you rested your hand on his shoulder, shivering at his touch. You should pull away, save yourself from the ache. But the way he held you- gently and with a foreign love you would never feel from Steve, your body stayed.  You had wondered what it would be like. Wrapped up in his arms, your name on his mouth, his lips on your throat. You had imagined it more times than you cared to admit.
One dance couldn't hurt.
You let him take the lead, swaying you slowly into the night. His hand on your waist, guiding you to a silent melody.
“Ya know, there was a moment that I thought it might be us.” His words whispered against your neck, freezing you in time. You swore your veins turned to ice at the cruelty of his remark. All you could do was gape.
Steve pulled away to look at you, watching your face turn pale and eyes fill with tears.
“How could you- This is a bad idea. I can’t do this, Steve.” You choked out, horrified at how little your voice sounded. You hated how he made you feel, small and broken. If you were, it was only because he made you that way.
“I didn't mean to-”
“Didn't you? I respect myself too much to beg you to stay. But what the fuck, Steve? How can you stand there, one foot out the door and tell me that?” You were shattered, hand over your heart as if it might fall out at any moment. “I’ve followed you around like you were the sun. I’d do anything for you. But I won’t watch you walk away. Not when all that’s waiting for you is a ghost. I love you too much, and it breaks my heart that you can’t even consider that I could… That I might…”
“Y/n, baby, I’m so sorry. I just-” Your name fell from his lips like a plea, but you couldn't stand there and listen to him try to mend what was already so irreversibly broken.
“No- Just stop.” You blurted, turning away and pulling yourself from his grasp. “I’ve been second to her my whole life. I’m numb to it now. But don’t make excuses for your shitty decision. If you want to go, go.” With that, you pushed away from him, heading back to the party and away from the man who, come tomorrow, would be forever out of reach.
The next morning you woke up, eyes burning from the tears shed the night before and chest heavy with guilt.
Part of you knew there was a better way to say the things you did, but another part reveled in your cruelty. Basked in how dumbstruck Steve looked standing on the lawn. Maybe it was mean, but so was he.
It wouldn't matter for long. The afternoon sun was creeping in and soon he would be gone. Nothing but a distorted memory of a man you used to love. But at least he knew. At least when he laid beside his consolation prize he would remember you. Maybe he would hurt. You cringed at the idea.
No matter how much you wanted to hate Steve, your heart simply wouldn't allow it. That was the worst joke of all. You despised the man you loved.
Buck: He’s waiting for you…
You looked down at your phone on the bedside table, wiping away the tear that rolled down your cheek. You knew it was time. This was the moment that you had prepared for. But you made a promise last night- one you were far too petty to fall back on now.
Though even still, as the seconds lulled by, guilt began to eat away at your brain and before you knew it you were half way out the door. Your feet dragged you down the hall, forcing you to confront the horrible truth.
You knew he was gone before Bucky even spoke the words. His eyes filled with a sadness only you could know. Shoulders slumped as he struggled to hold his gaze. He shook his head, affirming your worst fears as Sam’s panicked voice broke through the tension.
“Get him back here!” He shouted, his tone filled with dread. It was torture to watch, unberable to feel.
A loud crackle erupted through the air almost knocking you off your feet. Through the piercing white flash, you saw a figure. If you didn't know any better you would have thought-
There, in all of his glory, was Steve Rogers. Perfect and untouched. Like a statue carved from marble.
All you could do was gape, hand over mouth as he stepped down the tarmac, a smile that could instill world peace plastered on his pink lips. Your whole body vibrated with nerves. Somewhere between anger and hope.
Your name fell from his lips, but you couldn't hear it over the hammering of your heart, your feet already carrying you across the field.
“What the hell are you-”
“It’s you, doll.” He beamed, his words only fueling a rage that was threatening to boil over the closer you got. “It’s always been you. I can't believe I didn't see it until-”
Your fist colliding with his stoney jaw cut him off before he could finish. You pushed against his, palms thrashing at his chest as he tried to fend you off. Of course, he could if he truly wanted to, you knew this.
“Y/n, just listen to me.” He begged, holding your wrists tight as you went to take another hit. You tried to yank yourself away from him, but it was no use. “I was stupid, doll. A complete idiot and I didnt see what was right in front of me. Tell me it’s not too late. Tell me I still have a chance.” Steve's eyes brimmed with tears as your heart thundered in your chest.
You could only blink, your mind racing between a thousand reasons to walk away. To close the chapter on your love with Steve for good. So why did you stay? As if it wasn't torture enough. As if he hadn't beaten your heart black and blue with his carelessness. You wanted to run, but amidst the broken shards of your heart was a naive girl desperate with hope. And so, with a half step, you closed the distance, taking the deadly plunge as your lips collided with his.
Steve drank you in, his mouth moulding to yours the instant you met. His hands wrapping around your waist and pulling you in until you arched back against him. Nothing in the world could have prepared you for how completely and irrevocably intoxicating he was. His presence over you melting you into a puddle before him.
Steve's tongue gently ran across your bottom lip pulling a gutteral shutter to wrack through your body. The taste of him permanently cemented into your mouth. It was the soft moan that escaped the back of his throat that finally did you in, buckling your knees as you held onto the soldier for dear life.
It wasn't until Sam’s voice echoed around you that you finally pulled away from Steve. Your body’s untwining as the rest of the world came back into focus.
“Does anyone want to tell me what the hell is going on? What is she talking about?” Sam shouted, pointing his finger at you exasperatingly.
“I- I… I don't…”  Your words fell to the back of your throat, the memory of Steve’s lips ingrained in your skin. You couldn't think, much less form a coherent sentence as he looked down at you, that boyish grin plastered on his mouth. The way his eyes sparkled, tears filled with a longing you had seen many times, but never from him.
“Were you not coming back?!” Sam blurted abruptly causing Steve to snap his head in the falcons direction.
“No.” Steve spoke simply, his gaze returning to you. Eyes filled with an answer you had been wracking your brain for.  “I could never leave my best girl.”
You scoffed, your gaze only leaving Steve’s for a moment. His words were kind, his lips intoxicating. But there was a nagging in your heart, pulling you from your dreamstate and back to reality.
“Best girl, huh?” You signed, leaning into him as you chased his touch. “I think I’m going to need you to prove that, Rogers.”
Steve chuckled, the low rumble vibrating through your chest. His smile seemed brighter than you’d ever seen, reassuring you that this was the only place he wanted to be. “For as long as I can, darling.”

HYDRA Hunter
Helmut Zemo x Reader
Part 1
Tumblr media
You worked at SHIELD for your entire life, inspired by the likes of Peggy Carter and Captain America, wanting to do the right thing and protect people.
You worked hard, rising up through the ranks. Becoming a Colonel. Spending your time ensuring that you could help people.
Then SHIELD falls, along with HYDRA. And you find out that the organisation you’ve dedicated your life work to was not what you thought it was.
You spend the years after the fall of SHIELD finding old HYDRA bases and employees and ensuring they’re brought to justice.
This has caused you to bump into the Avengers quite often. Steve Rogers often asks for your help with intel.
You earn the quite the reputation as you track down a large number of old HYDRA operatives.
You’re soon known as the HYDRA Hunter. A name you aren’t too happy with but it seems to have stuck with you.
One day Steve asks you to help him and Sam with their search for Steve’s friend, Bucky Barnes. The former Winter Soldier. You agree to help them.
Although, now that you’re occupied by your search for Bucky you don’t notice there’s another person hunting HYDRA’s people.
You don’t notice when Vasily Karpov, the Winter Soldier’s handler, is found dead.
You don’t notice that a certain red notebook has been stolen.
Then Vienna happens.
And the entire world has joined in with your search for Bucky Barnes.
And that grainy photograph is plastered across every newspaper, news show, social media site. It’s everywhere.
You can’t it out of your head. That the ghost of HYDRA could be so obviously spotted like that.
So you go back to your research. Noting down as many HYDRA names as you can find. Then you spot one. Vasily Karpov. And his obituary.
You read the police report. That he was hung by his ankles over his sink and drowned.
Someone else was after the Winter Soldier.
Your discovery is too late though. Steve, Sam, and Bucky are missing by the time you’re in Berlin.
Then Tony sends you some files. The reported death of the UN psychologist sent to assess Bucky. And the identity of the man who impersonated him. The man who found the Winter Soldier.
Baron Colonel Helmut Zemo.
If you weren’t so frustrated that you missed this you would have been impressed with his work.
In the aftermath of the Avengers splitting up you’re busy trying to stay under the government’s radar.
Then Thanos happens, and you’re dusted away. Only to return five years later.
After the final battle you stay in touch with Sam and Bucky, you’d helped Sam out during the years he was on the run.
So when he gives you a call after Bucky’s arrest you offer to help with the Flag Smashers.
Then Bucky suggests visiting Zemo.
“He knows all of HYDRA’s secrets.” Bucky reasons. Sam immediately gestures to you. You nod, agreeing with him.
“I’m literally right here, Buck.” He sighs.
“Do you have any idea where the serum’s coming from?” He’s got you there.
“Not entirely. After a couple of days of digging I might find something?”
The three of you exchange looks. You don’t have a couple of days to spare for a maybe.
“Okay. Let’s go see Zemo.” Sam says.
Then you’re in a maximum security prison in Berlin. Bucky went in to see Zemo alone, which puts you on edge.
You know the trigger words don’t work anymore. You’re not afraid of the Winter Soldier. You’re afraid that Zemo will manipulate Bucky into doing something he doesn’t want to do.
Bucky seems fine when he returns. You and Sam follow him as he leads you to a large warehouse.
“Where are we, man?” Sam asks. Bucky doesn’t answer, instead walking you through a ‘hypothetical’ jailbreak scenario.
You’re beginning to doubt how hypothetical this situation is.
Then Zemo steps into the room.
“What did you do?” Sam stares at Bucky. Though it’s pretty obvious what Bucky’s done.
“We need him Sam.” Bucky reasons.
“You’re going back to prison!” Sam demands, pointing at Zemo.
“If I may?” Zemo begins.
“NO!” Sam and Bucky yell at him. You hear Zemo mumble an apology as Sam turns to you,
“[Y/N]?” He prompts, hoping you’ll back him up. You sigh a little, considering your options,
“HYDRA was never able to successfully recreate the super soldier serum, excluding Bucky. That’s why they had to steal Howard Stark’s test serum for the Winter Soldier program. Whatever lead he has, it’s better than anything I’ve got.” Sam sighs,
“You don’t make a move, without our permission.” He warns Zemo. Zemo nods,
“Fair.” He then turns his attention to you, “I don’t believe we’ve been introduced.” Zemo’s eyes are fixed on yours as he inclines his head.
“[Y/N] [Y/L/N]. You must be Baron Zemo.”
“Baron?” You hear Sam question from behind you. You keep your eyes on Zemo.
“Or do you prefer Colonel? Some people value their military achievements over inherited titles.” You’re letting know you’ve done your research.
“Just Zemo will suffice.” You nod. Sam turns to him,
“Alright Zemo, where do we start?” Zemo heads to one side of the room, turning on the power. The lights flicker on, revealing a large collection of cars. “So our first move is grand theft auto?” Sam jokes.
“These are mine. Collected by family over the generations.” He opens the trunk of one of the cars. You glance inside, noticing the array of weaponry stored. “I spent years hunting people HYDRA recruited to recreate the serum, because once it’s out there,” he bends to reach inside another car. “Someone can create an army of people, like the Avengers.” He gives Sam a pointed look. “I ended the Winter Soldier program once before. I have no intention to leave my work unfinished.” Sam turns to you,
“So you two haven’t met?” You look away from him. Even after all these years, you’re still a little unsettled by how good Zemo was. That you never saw him coming. Zemo frowns,
“Should I know you?” You shake your head,
“Sam’s joking.” You dismiss.
“Sounds like he was doing your job for you.” Sam adds. You sigh before explaining to Zemo.
“I’ve been tracking down HYDRA personnel for the last few years. So Sam’s surprised we’ve never crossed paths.” Zemo nods, considering your explanation.
“Are you surprised?” You tilt your head at him. “That we never crossed paths?” Yes, absolutely. It still annoys you to this day. You shrug casually,
“The world’s a big place. It’s not too surprising.” Zemo looks at you, not buying how casual you are. He thankfully changes the subject,
“To do this, we’ll have to scale a ladder of low lives.”
“Well join the party, we’ve already started.” Sam tells him. Zemo heads off, his stride determined, as he calls back to the three of you,
“First stop is a woman named Selby. Mid-level fence, I still have a line on. From there we climb.” The three of you follow Zemo as he heads towards the exit.
He asks for a moment to change his clothes. Bucky paces outside the bathroom as Zemo changes.
When he emerges he’s dressed in a turtleneck, with dress trousers and shoes. He pulls a long coat with a fur collar onto his shoulders. You notice he’s also fresh faced, he must have shaved.
There’s a small walk to a local airfield where a large jet is waiting.
“So all this time you’ve been rich?” Sam gestures to the jet.
“Like [Y/N] said, I’m a Baron, Sam. My family was royalty before your friends destroyed my country.” You wince at the thought of Sokovia. What happened there is one of your biggest regrets.
There’s an old man stood at the stairs into the jet. Zemo greets him in Sokovian, kissing each of his cheeks affectionately. He welcomes the three of you and you reply with a polite,
“Thank you, sir,” in Sokovian. Zemo glances at you for a moment, no doubt surprised that you speak Sokovian.
The four of you get comfortable on the plane. You’re sat opposite Zemo, with Bucky next to you.
The atmosphere is rather tense, particularly after Zemo stole Bucky’s notebook, causing Bucky to threaten Zemo.
Then Zemo tells you where you’re going.
Madripoor. That’s just great.
As the plane gets close to Madripoor, Zemo suggests that the three of you should change your clothes. He explains each of your roles. You roll your eyes when he tells you that you’d be playing the part of his lover.
You head to the room at the back of the plane with you bag in hand. The outfit Zemo’s bough you is lying on the bed.
You close the door and get changed into your tact gear. People in Madripoor know you, they know there’s no change of you dating a Baron. You push open the door as you finish getting changed. You’re busy securing your weapons when you hear Zemo approach,
“Is my selection not to your liking?” he asks. You look up at him. He doesn’t seem mad that you’re refusing his gift, just curious.
You glance down at the outfit. No doubt it was expensive, and it’s very tasteful.
“No offence intended, Baron. But if we’re going to Madripoor I’m going as myself, not as your arm candy.”
“You couldn’t be both?” He asks. You stop and look back up at him, he returns your gaze, his thoughts a mystery to you. Then Sam interrupts,
“Damn, you think you’ve over done that a little?” He asks you, gesturing to the array of knives along your belt, and the holsters across your thighs and calves. You laugh a little,
“Walking into Madripoor unarmed is pretty unconventional. You three will stick out without any noticeable weapons.”
“You’re forgetting, we have one of HYDRA’s most notable weapons.” Zemo nods his head towards the other end of the plane. No doubt referring to Bucky. You’re quick to press a knife to his throat,
“Refer to him as a weapon again, Baron, and I will ensure you regret allowing me on your plane.” You trail the knife along his jawline, watching it trace against his skin. “Understood?” His gaze doesn’t stray from your face, but he swallows hard and provides a minute nod.
“Of course, Colonel.” You tilt your head aside. He knows more than he lets on. You pull away from him, feeling suddenly aware of how close the two of you are.
Bucky leans his head though the doorway,
“We’re landing.”
A/N: This is a lot longer than I thought it was going to be so there’s going to be a few more parts to this.
