I forget which interview it was but it was for S3 re: Jaskier being queer and his relationship with Radovid, so it's recent and it's a good interview but there's one part in particular that stood out to me.

And it's when Joey is asked if he was always playing Jaskier as queer and Joey replied that, in season one, he was playing Jaskier as straight because, as far as he knows, Dandelion is straight in the books.

To repeat: Joey said he was playing Jaskier as straight in season one.

So, I have to admit that I'm very confused now. Far be it from me to accuse him of lying, especially since I don't know him and can't read his mind or anything like that. So, presuming that he's being honest....

... That's supposed to be Jask being heterosexual?

That's Joey playing the bard as heterosexual?

He's one of my favorite actors and I think he's fantastic. I'm not accusing him of bad acting, exactly, because frankly, he was born to play Jaskier in particular but he's also just good in general. I'm just trying to process that that's what Joey thought Jaskier being het looked like.

Because the interview makes it sound like the idea to play Jaskier as queer didn't happen until before S3 began but we could all see that Jaskier was fruity AF. We all enjoyed his defensiveness with "nobody leaves any tastes in my mouth, thank you very much" and we all noticed the pause before "artists". Tumblr had a meltdown over "I'm not not into it."

Again, I'm not accusing him of lying. I'm just trying to process how, at all these steps along the way, Joey was apparently like, "Yes, this is 100% the heterosexual way to proceed here."

Maybe he really does just get possessed by Jaskier and that explains why Joey's intention to play Jaskier as straight earlier in the show came off as queer? Because Jaskier just cannot come across as heterosexual despite Joey's admirable acting talents? Jaskier's fruitiness was just too strong?

I'm just so happy the bard is canonically pansexual. I'm pansexual and to know one of my favorite characters, and one of my favorite fantasy characters, is like me in that regard? I get to see someone like me in a fantasy show and it's just this healthy, positive thing? It means so much! And I'm so grateful for Joey wanting to do this and wanting to do it so carefully and thoughtfully.

I just experienced shrimp color emotions rewatching The Bath Scene in season 1 and hearing "rub chamomile on your lovely bottom" in light of Jaskier’s confirmed queerness as of s3. I grew up in the pre internet era of homophobic TV and I think my brain just broke because I've never had a blorbo for so many years and then they *get their queerness confirmed onscreen* I've never once had the experience of getting to go back and watch old seasons in a new light it's a feeling like no other.

Thinking again about gender and sexuality in Faerun (specifically in the context of BG3)...

About how living amongst different races, especially in a place like Baldur's Gate, ought to affect your acceptance of others-- essentially living in a melting pot of people.

About how being able to change your gender and race at a whim (with a relatively low level spell), will ultimately impact your relationship with your own body.

About how others' changing bodies or how they represent themselves would affect your own sexuality.

For me, I would imagine that makes both your gender and your sexuality more fluid. As such, I truly believe that the characters in BG3 are incredibly open to people of any body type. After all, gender is such a societal construct, what does it look like in a world where you can construct it to your very will?

Anyway, I'm rambling, but tldr; it's interesting to look at a world like Faerun through a different lens, because the existence of magic sort of necessitates that.

GAY TIMES: You’ve been bombarded over the years about Jaskier’s potential fruity feelings towards Geralt, so how does it feel for your character to finally be canonically queer?

Joey: He’s canonically queer in the TV show, which is a departure from the books and the games, as far as I know. It was wonderful to see a panromantic or pansexual person in such a flagship show such as this. There are shows that do explore sexuality and equally valued sexualities and identities but, from my reading, this is the first major one in a fantasy show.

A big part of our conversations were working out, ‘What is the history of LGBTQ+ relationships within this world of dragons and other things?’ And so, that’s an ongoing conversation that I’m so excited to, not only share with the world in season three but with season four and five onwards, find out where Jaskier ends up.

This is an NPC in my dnd campaign, his name is plock. He's a ship merchant that the characters buy a ship off of (a spelljammering ship).
