There's a huge pressure for queer authors to out themselves & use their identity to market their book.
So many calls for books/events ask for ownvoices books, but what they're really asking for is books by openly out authors.
Please ask for books with queer MCs instead!🙏🌈❤️
Ownvoices was meant to be about uplifting marginalized voices, but this isn't what we're doing anymore: we're prying into authors' personal lives just to make sure we're reading/featuring a book with 'good rep'. This needs to stop, it's so harmful.
This can't be the standard.
Since when did we start caring about rep in fictional books more than the real people behind those books? If we want to uplift marginalized voices, those voices shouldn't have to owe us anything in exchange, not their history, not their identity.
Authors shouldn't have to out themselves for us to read their books, let's make this a safe space for everyone.❤️🌈

SOMETHING'S NOT RIGHT IS OUT!
“A quietly fantastical wonderland of creatures, queerness, and possibility.” — Max Franciscovich @goose-books, author of Night Shift
The debut collection returns in a special fifth anniversary edition, repackaged with three new short stories, a new cover, and additional bonus content! A vampire is forced into a compromising situation; a father fears his child's growing plant collection; the undead go to high school; a butcher contemplates whether or not she can be loved. In a captivating debut, yves. opens the door to our world, slightly askew—where the crows work for witches and telephone booths serve as secret channels for prophecy; where a diverse cast of monsters and humans alike are forced to contend with what the world believes is right.
Thank you to everyone who made my weird uncategorizable "Lemony Snicket meets Carmen Maria Machado" speculative fiction an instant bestseller! If you’ve ever felt like a monster, this book is for you.

Anon works in a thrift shop. They are the curator of donated books. A number of these books are either written by or feature non-white people. What began as a collection for holidays (e.g. Lunar New Year, MLK Jr. Day) grew into a stack of any book featuring a non-white person (e.g. a novel about a Chicano living in the inner-city, bilingual baby books, a short story about an indigenous girl surviving a hurricane, a collection of African myths).
In anon's store the shelves are organized by size and genre, but they have one shelf in the center (albeit below eye-level) designated to be the Feature. They are trying to decide whether to put all the non-white books together on the feature shelf for those who may be looking for books about non-white people, or to stick to sorting everything unilaterally by size and genre.
We ask your questions so you don’t have to! Submit your questions to have them posted anonymously as polls.

So I heard you like free transmasc psychological thrillers with unkillable bastards surviving hell and finding HEA
Tumblr media
In 1997, New York City, a petty criminal named Alex Voss is about to die via bullet shot right between the eyes by his criminal employer: Boris. But was he really a petty criminal, or something even stranger? As all roads lead to death, he recounts his tragic life one last time; murder, sex, drugs, rock and roll, losing his mind and failing at being a true hero. There’s no escape from his tragic ending. At least, that’s how it’s meant to play out. As events fail to line up, is Alex’s mind breaking the fourth wall, has he finally succumbed to madness, or did a deus ex machina from the future save him from himself? It might just be all three, actually.

I've been working on this project with Sha for almost a year now and it seems unbelievable that we're about to launch so soon!!
I realized that I tend not to share a lot about my inner workings, as I'm so used to communicating via art, but there's so much I want to talk about in regard to the conception and process of TO11.
When I was a child, I had always been into mythology, fairytales and folklore from all places, especially Greek and Norse mythology as those were always popularized and easily accessible. Growing up in SEA, I was always told tales from Malaysia and the countries surrounding us, but as I grew older, I started to wonder why South East Asian folklore wasn't as popular as Greek or Norse myths even though we also had stories that were equally as interesting and captivating.
This led me down a rabbit hole of learning about the history of S.E.A and how due to war and colonization, so much of our cultural history has started to disappear since most of our stories are passed down orally. This motivated me to start working on the development of Tales and Oracle of Eleven with my friend Sha Roose, who I asked to be a writer for the anthology.
Tumblr media
Collecting stories from different countries was quite a challenging task, especially since many of these stories were passed down through oral tradition and have been scarred by the painful effects of colonization. In some countries, we see local stories, once woven into the fabric of their communities, systematically erased and slowly forgotten. Despite facing resource limitations, Sha approached the research and writing with great care, making sure to select stories that were not widely known and focused on ones featuring diverse protagonists, intriguing outcomes, and meaningful analogies.
I'm so happy to be able to invite 11 artists from these 11 countries as well to participate in this project. Besides making art for us, the artists also graciously allowed us to interview them and to get their lived experience of being SEA be it if they are still living there or living overseas as Diasporas. I've learnt so much from them, like did you know Timor Lorosa'e ( commonly known as Timor-Leste ) just gained their independence in 2002?
Tumblr media
Anyways, this project has taken about 2+ years to make, and even now I'm still working on the art. ( 64% completed ) Sha and I have truly poured our hearts into this project and If you're still here, thank you for reading this all the way, I really appreciate it.
Tumblr media
We're about 11 days away from the launch on Kickstarter, and if you can, please follow us there and share the project! Also, a quick reminder that we will be doing extremely limited quantities of early bird bundles so hit the notify me button on Kickstarter to be the first to know when we launch on the 11th of July, 11:11am EST!

it's like, yes, i do read a lot of books that are inherently about social and political issues. books that respond to the questions that identity politics raise. didactic books that make a point about #diversity and #representation. this is important. but i don't want that to be mistaken for the idea that "all books have to be moral or didactic". i believe novels are primarily meant to, as ottessa moshfegh puts it, "expand consciousness" and teach us as individuals about the best and worst of ourselves. critical readings of novels will of course consider the social and political context and ramifications of a work and its ultimate reception by readers. but to limit a work to only its potential real life implications is in itself a sign of a lack of media literacy. it's not some "superior critical reading skills" bro. some novels are simply meant to reveal, not to teach or to respond, and that's not in the least a critical shortcoming.

As a trans creator who's been harassed for several months now for writing romance books with trans MCs, I've noticed some things that really show how hypocritical and superfluous the harassment I receive daily over certain characters are. It's kind of interesting.
Usually what people come at me for is writing these three:
Tumblr media
My book series The Prince's Dearest Guards where Hal, a trans Prince who has only socially transitioned and is more sub-leaning, romances his two personal guards. Because it's erotic-romance, the marketing tends to highlight spicy scenes.
I get harassed as supposedly the trans rep is 'bad and fetischizing' especially because 'Hal is a sub' and 'the marketing highlights their sex life so much'. Sometimes other trans men will pick apart his design down to the size of his eyelashes and 'call me out' on it, too.
Tumblr media
I get told Hal looks too feminine or 'stereotypical' as he's 'white, blond w/ blue eyes', people find issue with his appearance A LOT. So... we could assume if I wrote another book with a similar character and similar marketing, I would get harassed for it, too, right?
Wrong.
Meet Alex, the MC in my other book series Warrior Of Hearts about a rich & famous trans man who has only socially transitioned and is more top-leaning.
Tumblr media
Because there is a lot of spice in this book too, the marketing tends to highlight that as well.
Yet the reactions to him are so different.
Tumblr media
When I post about the book featuring Alex I'm immediately praised for the 'amazing trans rep' and 'having a trans man topping in a story!'
No one ever picks apart his design even when it's quite similar to Hal's, nor do they ever mention any discomfort toward the 'spicier marketing'.
TL;DR: This is all a little silly, even more so once broken down.
And if you happen to also be a trans creator getting harassed over how you designed your OCs, don't worry too much about it, because as you can see here, it really doesn't mean much. Take care. ❤
