I'll answer more calmly all later but when I saw your reply I realized I forgot to add my new hc of how Marcus and Sejanus meet in the latam AU (although it could also serve to some extent in canon) 😔😔
So I started to ramble on about certain details of that great moment of gentleness between Sejanus and Marcus and I was like ok putting snow on someone's finger to get them uninjured is a bit unusual knowledge for a child and more so if they were so young. I'm sorry I've never seen snow but I'm sure if I lived in a place with snow at that age I and many other kids probably would have eaten it instead of using it that way so I came to the conclusion that Marcus' parents, well mother, I don't know I always visualized him as the son of a single mother IDK, but his mother probably had some knowledge in traditional medicine -huesera, like those ladies who know all about tea and herbs and ointments and move arms and weists😝
So Baby Marcus from a young age had some knowledge on how to take care of small injuries BUT WELL. What I thought for the latam au was; Imagine Baby Sejanus gets sick and they take him to the doctor and give him all kinds of treatments but nothing seems to work and Vesta is heartbroken but won't give up so even though she had to fight with Strabo (not much because he ended up giving in because that's his son and well it wouldn't hurt to try even if he feel untrust about these things but Vesta yelled at him and threatened him a little so he stopped arguing quickly, pls "Vesta DONT ask me the divorced 😭" "🙄") Vesta starts looking for alternatives and that's when someone from her neighbors tells her about Marcus' mother and she goes and asks for help
And they start treating baby Sejanus who actually gets better!!!! but here's the thing :)) because baby Marcus helped his mom maybe with little things like watching Sejanus while he was napping or changing his pañuelo to bring his temperature down (while Vesta and Marcus' mommy become friends <3 and support each other with Marcus' mommy comforting Vesta and giving her encouragement and I'm sure Vesta would bring her bread and candy and probably made a principle payment for Sejanus treatment).
But I kinda see Sejanus was with fever and very tired the first days and Marcus didn't get a chance to talk to him well and was very curious to meet him, wondering all the time who he was and then one day baby Sejanus wakes up and their eyes meet and 😳
And that's it hahaha, wait for my proper response to your reply later
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA I LOVE THIS SO SO SO MUCH 😭😭😭
I've read some works on ao3 that have marcus' mom as a doctor on D2, and I think that to be really sweet; I've also never seen snow in my life, but I agree lmao 😭 and I also agree, in my head it's is already canon he's the kid of a single mother. and LOVE the idea of marcus' mom knowing about traditional med (here we call these ladies benzedeiras, it's common in small towns for when children are sick for moms to take them for these ladies to pray and give them teas and herbs)
strabo is extremely skeptical, he's that kind of guy who just doesn't believe in anything, but he was willing to spend any amount of money to get bby sejanus healthy again. and still, nothing is working, and he's already running out of ideas; vesta was letting him have control of the situation, but she was getting more and more desperate (that's her baby, she can't lose him like that), and then it comes to the point she grows so impatient and stands by the fact that NOW she's going to decide which doctor they would get sejanus to, and she already settled her mind on asking marcus' mom over. and of course they fight, bc strabo thinks it's such a waste of time to invite this lady over because "these are just plants, it won't make him better", but in the end, he gives in (the divorce threat made me laugh 😭 that's what he deserves). and vesta grew up in a small village, she saw plenty of times her sisters being sick and getting better because of this kind of treatment, so she at least have to try.
BBY MARCUS GOING TO HELP HIS MOM IS JUST SO ADORABLE, and his mom is apologizing to vesta because she didn't want to bother but she promises marcus is a good kid, and vesta not only is absolutely okay with it, but she spoils marcus so much, giving him all kind of treats and sweets (at the end of the day marcus and his mama come back home with a bowl with vesta's homemade dulce de leche). and when his mom and vesta are chatting, and his mom is comforting her saying everything will be okay, he's watching sejanus. and when marcus is caring for sejanus, he sometimes talks to sejanus, muttering stuff like "just get good already, your ma is worried about you" and "and you get better, maybe we can play together, you have really fancy toys". and vesta promises marcus that once sejanus gets better, they can play together ("but mrs. plinth, what if he doesn't want to play with me?" "he WILL, it's not a matter of choice").
the moment sejanus finally wakes up and sees marcus in his room omg 🥹 and they stand there in silence for a while, until marcus finally opens his mouth to say that sejanus has the biggest brown eyes he have ever seen, and sejanus is like "...thanks? I guess?" but blushing so hard. and then there's the whole moment of vesta crying so hard and hugging sejanus and thanking on her knees to marcus' mama. she turns to marcus and promises him he'll ALWAYS be welcome on their house. but marcus doesn't come back until sejanus goes after him to knock on his door and ask him to go to his house to play and watch tv with him after school.
(I'm actually obsessed with this, tysm bc this will probably live in my mind rent free for the next weeks 😭)

only the option with the least votes will be eliminated! the rest go on to round 3. propaganda under the cut (and more always welcome!):
the option with the least votes will be eliminated. propaganda under the cut (and more always welcome!):
kit herondale and livvy blackthorn:
They were literally straight bait. So Kit, Livvy and Livvy’s twin brother Ty were a trio with their own side plots in TDA. And well. We literally meet Kit when Ty breaks into his house and puts a knife to his throat and Kit gets distracted by Ty’s eyes. Then later Kit and Livvy have a few moments and kiss once. Then Livvy dies. There are some necromancy shenanigans. Kit confesses his love to Ty then immediately flees the country. Like Kit/Ty was clearly endgame from the start but Livvy and Kit just made out once.
peggy carter and daniel sousa:
She’s the best secret agent, he’s a hot as hell disabled war vet They get together, but also don’t because apparently Steve Rogers is a homewrecker Peggy moved on after losing Steve, got together with the amazing Daniel Sousa, and then got broken up because the Russos didn’t want Steve to be seen as being gay for Bucky
nina zenik and matthias helvar:
[MAJOR SPOILER] If they were truly straight Matthias wouldn’t have died (submitter also stated that nina is canonically bi/pan)
buffy summers and spike:
Buffy's a vampire slayer and Spike's a vampire. Enemies to Lovers. Absolutely not intended by creators, creators treated it like a joke at first, then some of the writers/producers actively hated it even throughout their canon relationship, they don't technically get together in the end, also he dies (kind of. he's brought back in another show. and the comics. it's complicated). Very queercoded relationship despite being m/f - desire, euphoria, shame, slowburn, keeping it a secret, doesn't think anyone else will understand or accept them, wanting to change for the better.
himmel and frieren:
https://official.lowee.us/manga/Sousou-no-Frieren/0030-015.png https://official.lowee.us/manga/Sousou-no-Frieren/0030-016.png https://official.lowee.us/manga/Sousou-no-Frieren/0030-017.png https://official.lowee.us/manga/Sousou-no-Frieren/0030-018.png https://64.media.tumblr.com/ccb9c16bab47d917d2e11dd22c9b88e7/828182d720d735af-ea/s500x750/210c55d7128139c2ce032383b34ad487df067514.jpg
jean-luc picard and beverly crusher:
They have a number of romantic moments throughout the TNG series from arguably the first but DEFINITELY the second episode. but they only get together (briefly before divorcing) in an alternate timeline episode which is also the season finale. Also they have a kid together in Picard but are still not allowed to be together She was married to his best friend and he was in love with her but wouldn’t say anything because he wouldn’t want to damage his bestie’s marriage and then his friend died and they met again years later and shared a lot of romantic and sexual tension for years. He openly admitted (under mind reading) that he had loved her since his bestie was alive but felt he couldn’t act on it. In an alternate future they got married. In the canon future they got together and broke up repeatedly because trauma makes relationships hard sometimes and they have a kid together who is named after the aforementioned bestie. An episode forcing them to share thoughts makes him openly admit that he loves her and has loved her for years even when she was married to his best friend.
tyler rake and nik khan:
They’re very close, have lots of chemistry, but have never been acknowledged in canon. At this point they are just work friends who save each others’ lives on the regular.
keiichi maebara and rena ryugu:
Fluffy harem romcom twists into yandere horror, but then twists again into a story of friendship triumphing over everything. Really holds for any pairing with Keiichi, but the rooftop battle in part 6 is just too good. A recent manga spinoff has them married to total randos, so their respective sons can have the same kind of relationship.
naoko takahashi and shouta oohara:
this “show” is a 2 episode hentai so I can understand if this doesn’t get in the brackets lol (I would not recommend watching this hentai for the sex scenes, I just remember reading about Oohara getting cucked for a girl and thinking that I had to see this) So, it starts off with Takahashi being in love with Oohara and they do have ghost sex in the first part of the episode 1 but what happens is that even though they have the opportunity to be together as ghosts, Takahashi pretty much IMMEDIATELY forgets about Oohara because she becomes completely infatuated with this ghost girl named Sakurako to the point where even when Oohara turns into a tiny penis in episode 2 but Takahashi doesn’t give a fuck
good luck everyone! now go vote!

Odo, the most allo-ace bastard
I don’t know how many people asked for Odo to be in the allo-ace folks competition, but I was on the list. Now that we're here I refuse to let my blorbo lose to Spongebob.
Is Odo Alloromantic?
Odo has three main ships- Quark (headcanon) Luxwana (canon supported) and Kira (canon endgame)
Quark and Odo have a Wiley Coyote/ Road Runner-esque relationship.  The comedy! The drama!
(episode antagonist) "I can't believe you're defending him, Quark. You're his worst enemy."
(Quark) "I guess that's the closest thing he has in this world to a friend."
Luxwana and Odo are basically canon qpr.  They had a brief marriage of convenience where Odo was forced by plot to give a meaningful declaration of love.  At the end they get a divorce, because although Odo did love Luxwana, he didn’t love her the way she needed and Luxwana didn't want to end up hating him. A gap in intimacy ending a relationship between asexual and allosexual partners is a deeply the vibe.
Kira and Odo date for a bit over a season. Odo was pining for her for most of the series.  Their history was deep and complicated and lovely.  So it is at least cannon that Odo has romantic interest sometimes, but I will admit that a demi-romantic reading of Odo also has some cannon support.
(Odo) “I'll never understand the humanoid need to... 'couple.”
But is Odo Asexual?
So this is a matter of interpretation.  To start with, Odo is space goo.   His whole species is space goo. I don’t know how this space goo replicates, but I can tell you that it probably doesn’t look like humanoid sexual reproduction.
When Luxwana’s Betazoid sex fever makes the station horny, Odo is immune.  Not because he can’t get sick; the horniness is a psychic projection.  Not because he’s immune to psychics (unlike data), Luxwana can read his mind.  Odo just doesn’t get horny.  And this is after Odo’s crush on Kira is established.
Changelings, Odo’s space goo species, do have something called “the great link” which is apparently a very pleasurable experience for the Changelings involved.  Odo does experience “linking” and definitely got something out of it.  So that is a kind of pseudo-sexual relationship.
Odo also exists as a human for a brief period of time (between 3 to 11 months, Star Trek time scales are weird), and never pursues a relationship when he could have sex the humanoid way. He wasn’t into it as a solid.
So then we get to his relationship with Kira.
One, it’s not clear that Odo and Kira have sex.  They touch, they kiss, but in the entire season long relationship, Odo and Kira never fade to black. This is interesting because the characters in this show do have sex. Like, this show is really clear about this, but it seems that Kira and Odo don't.
And 2, even if they did, Odo and Kira would not be having identical experiences of arousal.  This dude has no sense of smell or taste.  He doesn’t have organs.
Yet, Odo and Kira are both happy and satisfied in the relationship.  When fate tears them apart in the last episode (Odo had to go save his species from extinction) it was portrayed as difficult and tragic.  The lack of traditional sex did not make their relationship less valid.
Odo also has a notable sexual encounter with a humanoid named Arissa.  The experience was great for her, and Odo didn’t mind, per say, but the experience wasn’t the same for him as it was for her.  Whatever sex is for changelings, that’s not what he has with humanoids.  That has the vibe of an Allo-ace who is not sex repulsed.  Odo shows how an alternative experience of sexual attraction is not the same as being incapable.  During the pillow talk, Arrssa has the airy, exhausted affectation of a person who just had sex.  Odo doesn’t.  Odo is just glad to know he did a good job.
I will not say that Odo is unproblematic.  He is a cop and a bastard.  He is yet another example of asexuality being inhuman. But he is also complicated and interesting.  As a product of the 90’s Odo is an icon of Allo-Ace identity.  Importantly, his romantic and sexual orientation informs and influences his character, but it isn't his defining trait either.

Hell or High water by bluefire301175 (E, 2,250 w., 1 Ch. || PWP, Frottage, Alley Sex, First Person POV John, Case-ish Fic, Mutual Pining, Bed Sharing) John wants. Sherlock wants. Plain and simple.

John seems annoyed to be second-best, Sherlock thinks, so Sherlock decides to give the departing woman (and maybe also John) a demonstration of who, exactly, John belongs to. But there's more than one level of sexual jealousy and more than one display of possession going on here, outlined in the window of 221b Baker Street. Part 2 of Lock and Key
Apodyopsis by QuinnAnderson (E, 3,347 w.,1 Ch. || PWP, Rough Sex, Table Sex, Anal, Sexual Tension) – Apodyopsis: (æpəʊdaɪˈɒpsɪs) noun. the act of mentally undressing someone. Part 2 of Undressed
Overture by Kate_Lear (M, 4,435 w., 1 Ch. || First Kiss / Time, Friends to Lovers, Angry John, Introspection, Dev. Rel., Embarrassed / Insecure Sherlock, Morning After, Bed Sharing, Cuddles / Limpet Sherlock) – A short snippet on how John and Sherlock might have got together.

Caves in the Mountains Are Seldom Unoccupied by starrysummernights & TheMadKatter13 (E, 7,925 w., 1 Ch. || Were-Creatures ||  Werebear John, Pseudo Bestiality, Rimming, Heavy Dub Con, Rough Sex, Come Inflation / Eating, Size Kink, PWP, Bratty Sherlock, Rutting) – “This isn’t something to play at, Sherlock,” he snapped. “If it doesn’t work out- what you’re asking of me- we can’t shrug and say 'oh well, at least we tried'. If we do this… I could seriously hurt you. Do you understand? I could lose control. I could… I could kill you.”
My Life for His by QuinnAnderson (E, 8,816 w., 1 Ch. || Guardian/Protector, Greek Mythology || Growing Up, Sex, Religious Themes, Suicide, Minor Character Death) – It began when Sherlock was eight, and he attempted to climb all the way up to the highest branch in the old willow tree in his back garden. He'd thought he was still small enough that it could support him, but the second he'd grabbed hold of it to pull himself up, the branch snapped, and down he went, plummeting a solid twenty metres. The odd thing was, he never actually hit the ground.

At least, not until a case takes them into a forest, along with Lestrade's team and something happens that will change everything about their lives...
The Kepler Problem by kinklock (E, 24,270 w., 1 Ch. || Sci-Fi AU, Alien Sherlock, Space Repairman John, Alien Biology, Horny John) – Working in uncharted space exploration was not as exciting as John had hoped, especially when it turned out to be mostly bot maintenance on uninhabited planets. However, the mystery of the repeated, unexplained malfunctions on planet BAK 2212 might turn out to be exactly the kind of adventure he'd been craving.
Inscrutable to the Last by DiscordantWords (M, 48,842 w., 6 Ch. || Post-TRF, Alternate S3, John’s Blog/S3 is a Story By John, Divorce, Marital Difficulties, John is a Mess, Emotional Reunion, Implied/Referenced Suicide, Grief / Mourning, Pining John, First Kiss, Adorably Clueless Sherlock, Nostalgia, Love Confessions, Eventual Happy Ending, Obsessive John) – He wasn't Sherlock, he couldn't work miracles. All he'd ever been able to do was write about them.

This fic picks up a few months after John and Mary's wedding, in an alternate universe where Magnussen doesn't exist, but Mary is still pregnant. Life continues -- just in a different direction. And slowly, Sherlock and John find their way to each other.

To finally go pro in the newly formed world of professional surfing and leave the dark memories of his past behind him as he rips across the face of a towering blue barrel. To lounge beside the beach bonfire every evening with an ice cold beer tucked into the cool sand beside him and listen to Pink Floyd and the Doors while the saltwater dries in his sun bleached hair. That's all he wants, that is, until the hot young phenom taking Oahu and the Hawaiian shores by storm steps up next to him in the sand in the second round of the 1976 International Surf Competition. When this child is born, the angel comes into being to protect and care for them during their life on Earth. For John Watson, all he cares about in the world revolves around his Chosen, Sherlock Holmes. Watching him grow up though, the angel soon learns that God must have had a sense of humour the day he decided to make Sherlock, as trouble seems to follow him like a magnet wherever he goes. John can't decide what's worse, the idea of losing his Chosen one, or the fact that he may be breaking the most taboo law of heaven as he disguises himself as a human to better protect and befriend the beloved detective he's always watched from afar. He was meant to care for him. But what happens when caring evolves into something more? What happens when an emotion an angel is supposed to be incapable of possessing comes to life suddenly and viciously inside John's chest?

Hmm maybe 002 Franletta? 😙
Thanks! Any excuse to talk about them <3
When I started shipping them: Very quickly lol. I wanna say it was the scene by the lockers where Fran tells Vilu she likes her "despite everything [Ludmilla's lies, Tomás]" and then after Vilu scribbles "Amiga" in her journal while staring at her (who's giving that dopey thumbs up XD) that solidified it for me. But even before that I was like 'oh, they're so cute, Tomás go away!' (I forget episode numbers but isn't this all before 1x10, maybe 1x12?)
My thoughts: I can't believe no one told me about them before I watched it??? But then it was also kind of nice that I was able to ship it naturally without any preconceived notions on whether I'd like it or not. And was happy to find after I wasn't alone (nor the first) to catch on to their gal pal-ness lol
What makes me happy about them: They're just so soft and affectionate with each other. And fiercely protective. I love all their hugs and hand-holding and cheek kisses. They're just extremely adorable while also sharing really intense storylines - a perfect balance of lots of fluff, but still plenty of angst. I also love how much they love each other even when they're apart. They literally long for the other when they're not around. Fran just about lost her mind when Vilu couldn't make her party. And that moment right before Fran surprised Vilu when she thought she left for Italy when she's staring at her phone dying to call her. I just think before they met they were both kinda lonely even with the people they had in their lives, and it's like you get to watch in real time they make this connection and find that missing piece they didn't know they needed.
What makes me sad about them: That they lose a bit of their appeal in s3. S1&2 their bond was really strong, and s3 it feels like they're not as close because Fran is too afraid to tell her about Diego and Vilu is so focused on winning León back. I do really like their Roxy/Fausta storyline for the absolute ridiculousness it is, but it's tainted by the fact that it's for all the wrong reasons. I wish they still had that storyline but it had more to do with like saving the studio or something? This way it was still fun, without the cringe. I haven't seen the second half yet (I took a mini hiatus that I just restarted last night 3x38 so we're getting to the "secret reveal") so I am interested how my reaction will be to that (but their reunion hug XD)
Things done in fanfic that annoys me: That there's not enough fanfic for them lol. Glad what is out there, but def can use more.
Things I look for in fanfic: I like to see them as in-character as they can be, where I can almost see it happening in the show.
My wishlist: A fic where they're already together? idk maybe there is, but I feel like I mostly read (and also have written) them getting together, i'd be interested in how they're written just as a couple.
Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: I love their canon endgames actually. I ship Leonetta and Diecesca as well but if they ever wanted to do a switch-a-roo I wouldn't hate it lmao.
My happily ever after for them: It's strange because I do ship their canon endgames a lot so I don't mind them just staying friends (weird thing to say about an otp??) so my almost best alternative is somewhere down the line they divorce Diego and León and reconnect after not having seen each other as their lives have led them in different directions. But they find themselves back in BA or something and move in together and find themselves falling in love and wondering if they already had in their teens. (yo someone jot this down, it's got fic potential + to my wishlist!)

Sisterwives by jaerie
This was it, the moment Louis had been waiting for his entire life. Giddy excitement bubbled up as he held hands and stared up at his soon-to-be alpha and husband and grinned. The ceremony was small and simple, but Louis didn’t mind. Fresh flowers pinned into his hair and a brand new outfit was all he needed to feel special in front of their few witnesses. It was just some members of his family and a few of the church elders in attendance as was customary for any marriage beyond the first wife within the faith.
First wives were the ones to have elaborate weddings with the whole community involved. An alpha’s first wedding was a celebration of an their coming of age, his first steps into fulfilling God’s prophecy. There were many glories for an omega that came with being a first wife but also many responsibilities. Louis had never aspired to be a first wife or even a second. He wasn’t experienced enough to be the leader of an alpha’s many wives and children and he didn’t think he’d be up to the task.
Louis was just fine in the position he was stepping into as the seventh.

“You don’t love me,” Louis had said, utterly blasé as he callously fractured the heart of a Harry that was just barely eighteen.
“I do,” Harry had insisted pleadingly, green eyes already watering.
Louis had rolled his eyes, exasperated and flippant in the way only beautiful, young boys could be when faced with the affections of a baby prince. He had run his finger down Harry’s cheek then, had forced him to look into his eyes as he delivered the final blow.
“You’ll change your mind once you’ve seen more of the world,” Louis had teased, pressing a brutally delicate kiss onto Harry’s lovely, pure cheek. “Once you’ve been properly defiled.” He had whispered filthily, delighted by the gasp he heard, the frantic pink blush that had rested high on Harry’s cheeks, the power he had felt at knowing he could make the Crown Prince squirm.

~hello~ !! For the meta asks!: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, and 25 :))
Hello!! Thank you for sending these; I was really excited to see that ask game and I was hoping somebody would send some in. It still took me a while to actually answer them though, and for that I apologise. But without further ado! Some meta answers (under the cut because they ended up being fairly long, whoops):
3. What is that one scene that you’ve always wanted to write but can’t be arsed to write all of the set-up and context it would need? (Consider this permission to write it and/or share it anyway.)
I thought of a few examples, but they could basically be grouped together under a common theme: whumpy/angsty scenes that were self-indulgent as all heck. The whole self-indulgent aspect often required the characters to be just the teeniest, tiniest bit OOC and/or necessitated rather unrealistic plot circumstances. So it was simply easier to keep such scenes as maladaptive daydreams, rather than trying to think of explanations for the character/plot issues…or exposing myself to judgement for them LOL.
Receiving permission to write/share one such scene anyway is an opportunity I can’t let slip by though. It might be because I’m writing this while running on zero (0) hours of sleep—let’s hear it for insomnia, y’all!—but I suddenly couldn’t remember any of my newer ideas under this category. However, I did recall a one-shot I had started writing a couple of months ago that sort of counts? “Sort of” because I could actually be arsed to write it since I was, ya know, writing it. Only got about six hundred words down though.
…should I share those six hundred words…?
………nahhh. I don’t think I’m quite ready for that yet.
But here’s the gist of it: Coulson and May (because of course it’s Philinda) were married for quite some time before the Attack on New York. But then Coulson DiedTM and then got ResurrectedTM. But gasp of horror, he had to lose his memories of his romantic relationship with May because reasons. (I actually did have some ideas for those reasons but sshhhh this is about me yeeting context and setup.)
The first half of S1 still happens as normal (except MayWard doesn’t happen because??? Vows) and it’s now post-E20 “Nothing Personal”. The morning after (or a morning soon after, whatever) the T.A.H.I.T.I. reveal! May’s mom—who doesn’t know about GH.325 and whom May fed a cover story about Coulson divorcing her or something equally as oof, IDK—shows up at the hotel and starts ripping into Coulson for breaking her daughter’s heart, then dragging her back into the field with her ex-husband (him), then accusing her of terrible things and forcing her away again.
Poor guy’s confused as heck, and so is the team, and soon enough so is Lian. The only one who understands what’s going on is May, and she’s freaking dying off to the side like why is this happening to me and eventually everybody’s like! Explain??? (Was thinking about including something from Coulson like, “Are you still keeping things from me?” Just for that extra smidge of angst, yay!)
So yeah then May gives a, like, two-sentence debriefing that elicits more questions than answers. Coulson decides to take May aside and they have a heart-to-heart. Lots of feelings and angst and hurt/comfort and at some point plenty of kissing too. Just! May hiding her feelings for Coulson’s sake but really magnified, plus some actual apologies and consideration of the grief May’s been through on Coulson’s part.
And uhh yeah that’s basically it I dunno hdsjncjshd. I warned y’all it’s OOC, plot-bendy, and very self-indulgent!
6. What character do you have the most fun writing?
I don’t think I could name a single character for this. I get different things out of taking on different voices, you know? I guess recently I’ve found myself gravitating towards more taciturn and introspective points of view, like JQ from my original novel Rosewood or M. Yisbon from my…other original novel Temple.
Generally, however, I like tackling stories from an outsider’s perspective. That’s why I so rarely write my more “substantial” (serious? demanding? for lack of better words?) projects from the PoV of my “preferred” character. This usually means writing from their love interest’s perspective, but not always. With shorter fanfic, using a more removed/unconventional/niche PoV can be really fun. Like, I once wrote a canon compliant ficlet purely(-ish) about Philinda from Tony Stark’s perspective. That isn’t always sustainable with stories that demand more character development or closer character studies, however, which is why it’s a good thing I like writing drabbles!
9. Are you more of a drabble or a longfic kind of writer? Pantser or plotter? Do you wish you were the other?
My word counts tend to run long, but I usually only write one-shots for fanfic. If I’m even inspired with a novella- or novel-length story idea for a fandom, you already know I’m in deep with them. And if I actually find the motivation to plan and execute that idea? Dangg. That’s only ever happened…twice, maybe thrice, and I’m in a lot of fandoms.
At times, I wish I could go for more of a middle ground ’cause, like, you know what I love to see? An AO3 dashboard with several completed novellas for my ship/character of choice. I mean yes, I hecking love >90k fics, but sometimes I’m in the mood for quick reads…and what am I supposed to do when I burn through all the drabbles and 2k one-shots? (Besides despair and/or reread my faves desperately.) Novellas are basically always safe for me LOL, and I’d hope to be able to give as much as I take.
Ultimately though, I think I’m okay with where I am with regards to that. I wish I could write more in general, but I’d be okay with “writing more” just meaning “writing more one-shots”, ya know? More than okay, really. I have mad respect for fic writers who have, like, a hundred or more one-shots under their belt for this one ship. The fandom ecosystem would be incomplete without them (as well as every other type of writer, but sshhh that’s the type of writer I’m closest to being right now).
I’m definitely a plotter, and I definitely prefer it that way. It’s cool having such a detailed record of my process. I like feeling like a frazzled genius on the brink of a major discovery with all of my different outlines and colour coding and many drafts and various websites.
12. Do you want your writing to be famous?
Not exactly. It might be cool if my original works were recognisable in the world, but I don’t think I’d want to be recognisable. As for fanfic, I’d low-key enjoy gaining a place in that fandom’s community as a fic writer. Like someone who gave and got fic gifts from fic writer friends, who participated in challenges and GCs, who received writing prompts on Tumblr, whose name was known for doing a certain trope/genre a bunch of times… Ya know what I mean?
Unlikely to happen when I’m so hecking hesitant to publicly (i.e., outside of AO3) claim credit for my writing, but fjnskfsjhfjs. A writer can dream, right?
15. Which is harder: titles or summaries (or tags)?
Of those three, tags are the easiest for me, for I have a reliable system for figuring out those.
Next easiest would probably be titles. For fanfiction, I like to use titles that are a quote from the source material. You should have seen all of my old Hamilton fanfic… I was really proud of some of those titles. And I don’t mean, like, whole lines—usually only two to five words. It’s a unique type of wordplay that I just love dabbling in.
And lastly, summaries. Sometimes inspiration strikes me and a snappy and intriguing synopsis just jumps out—one that I’m quietly pleased with—but most of the time I’ll spend way too long trying to think of such a synopsis and eventually just go with whatever I’d come up with so far. And live with my quiet dissatisfaction for the rest of time.
18. Do any of your stories have alternative versions? (Plotlines that you abandoned, AUs of your own work, different characterisations...?) Tell us about them!
Typically, no. If I have deleted scenes, I save and publish them separately, but that’s about it. I sometimes think of AUs for my own work and might talk about them in my author’s notes—might even talk about writing them—but I never really do anything with them.
Although…
It’s not uncommon for me to decide a plotline isn’t working for a certain story or to think of an interesting but undoable arc for a certain character, but what I’ll do is make a whole new story for those ideas. Once I’m done developing the original idea and the branched-off one, you probably wouldn’t be able to tell they grew from the same roots. Does that count?
21. What other medium do you think your story would work well as (film, webcomic, animated series, etc.)?
That depends on the story. I’ve actually written stories in other mediums—movie screenplay, musical stageplay, poetry, TV show scripts, play scripts, roleplay—but the novel does tend to be my comfort zone. Sometimes, if I have an idea that I think could work, or would even work better, as another medium, I’ll label it as such in my folder of ideas and decide not to write it as a novel.
Most of the time, my non-book projects are collaborations. I’m working with five different people on six different story ideas: two webcomics, one stage musical, one anime, and two animated TV shows. Little concrete progress has been made in any of those, mind you, but they’re still fun to discuss!
24. Would you say your writing has changed over time?
Absolutely. But I’ve been writing stories since I was five years old, so we would hope so, huh?
I wouldn’t say my writing’s changed completely, though maybe that’s just my insider’s perspective.
25. What part of writing is the most fun?
Oh gosh, I can’t believe you’d make me choose. Writing is just such a wonderful experience for me; I love just about everything to do with it. Admittedly, not all the time, but. Since that barely qualifies as an answer, however, I’ll give you this—
The endings. Not only that intense feeling of rightness when you wrap up that last sentence, but also the moments before. The adrenaline of knowing you’re almost there but you gotta push just a bit more to actually get there. And also the part right after—the real wrap-up, honestly: the revision and the editing. Heavens, I love revising and editing my work.
Which is not to say I don’t like writing it out for the first time, too—there’s nothing quite like seeing your cursor scroll to the next page, like going from a blank expanse to a Oh man, how many more lines are even going to fit on this page?, like watching that page counter tick up another number. However, there’s something cathartic about finally ironing out those problems I had to force myself to stop worrying about earlier because “just finish the first draft dangit”.
I guess that’s not really the end of the writing process, but whatever. Close enough (as fic writers are wont to say).
Another thank-you for these asks, and feel free to come back with more at any time! ;P
Send in fun meta asks for your friendly neighbourhood writer!

A Series of Wagers (2/3)
Series: The Magnus Archives Pairing: Elias Bouchard/Peter Lukas Summary: "An interesting gamble for one who consorts with The One Alone… up to something are we?”
"Wouldn't you like to know?" He throws back, face contorting into a facsimile smile that rings hollow despite the amusement that has to be there ghosting his lips.
Peter was right though. He did want to know. He always did. And if it weren’t for the mirage now obscuring that information from him, it wouldn’t be necessary at all. Frankly, it was interesting enough on its own that he was finding himself getting the attention now when this was hardly the first time they had met. It’s been a good night overall though, and he isn’t complaining about the game. There’s something surprisingly lively in the pale sea weathered man across the table he hasn’t seen from any of his family in a long time.
"And if I win?" Elias asks, even though he is already picking his cards from the deck.

Chapter 2: 2002 - 2011
DECEMBER 2002
While normally Elias has no issues in, and even to a degree, enjoys planning events it came as a relief to not be in charge of it this year. The end of the year is always a busy time between responsibilities to the Institute, its employees, planning the usual office party, and making sure every loose end was knotted off—nothing left lingering on his check list.
So it’s a bit of a reward when all is said and done. And despite their disposition, the Lukas family threw a good party. The venue contained plenty of spots to hide away, and after giving the necessary greetings to donors also attending, he’s able to find a nice view point from one of the tables at the top of the staircase, and comfortably watch the night unfold.
With the amount of catching up between those attending, it’s easy to glean a succinct summary of how everyone else spent the year. The things they admit, the things they think they should keep as a card up their sleeves. The tentative boundaries they draw around each other and where those alliances overlap or remain prickly as ever. Elias sits and watches them all, sipping at a flute of champagne.
It’s no surprise when Peter finds him, as usual not caring to properly announce his presence.
“Being a nosy voyeur again?”
“I believe I am allowed to enjoy a party in my preferred method. I don’t see you out there mingling either, dear,” Elias retorts, turning his gaze away from the crowds flittering down below to watch his partner steal a swig of his drink.
“That’s Nate’s job. Company head and all that—I’d rather be out on the water again, but…” He does a shrugging motion both in reference to statement’s obviousness, as well as a vague indication he was supposed to be here doing… something. Given his family was hosting, putting in an appearance that he promptly turned away from most likely.
Elias is already accustomed to this and only makes a mild noise of understanding without vocalizing that the concept didn’t seem so bad at the moment. He was feeling rather weary and in desperate need of a vacation himself, though with the length that the captain preferred to be out on the water, he doesn’t think that would be enjoyable. A weekend sounded nice though.
“I take that it was another year spent well isolated then? Certainly sounded like you had little to report.” There’s a thread of humor unsaid in how quite a few of his calls went unanswered, which spoke for itself well enough.
“Oh, nothing too strenuous, no. Did some spring cleaning of the crew; spent a couple months in València,” Peter looks wistful as he recalls it. As if by imagining it, he’ll be back in that Spanish seaside losing himself in crowds and drawing others to become just as lost. Not that Elias was peeking, much.
“Ah yes, I received your ‘care package’. Can’t say I’m too fond of potentially disease causing artifacts, but the Cuva Vella was nice to see.”
“I don’t have the same skill sets as your lot, so there’s no knowing if it’s really from the hospital they claimed, but it looked like a nice vase either way.”
“Well it’s in Artifacts now so…” Elias responds hiding how distrusting he feels in regards to the man’s true intentions, knowing for a fact it did have something attached to it. He, of course, is going to continue to feign disinterest—something he’s seemed to pick up as a reflexive instinct to match Peter.
“And here I was going to get you flowers,” The captain laments, though the sincerity of it is muddled behind a grin which appears to contradict his words. Elias doesn’t care to look to clarify for himself, and only answers him with an eye roll.
They stay the remainder of the party, out of sight and catching up themselves. Elias shares what gossip he feels like discussing, despite knowing Peter likely only cared to the extent of using the information to avoid as many extra conversations or meetings of his own. At some point, he must get sick of hearing about it though, and abruptly raises his head from the perch of his palm and suggests they leave.
It’s the free time Elias has to spare, he tells himself, beckoning him to follow Peter out into the night, leaving his own car to be picked up in the morning. The venue is closer to Kent and he knows they aren’t too far from the Moorland House, but isn’t surprised when it’s that same building Peter sometimes calls a home they arrive at instead.
They exchange coats and a chill settling in the room, an imitation of the past times they’ve been here—along with it, there’s an underlying hunger, once more waiting to spring free. He hadn’t been looking or expecting a longing to be there, and yet, after so many, many months apart, why wouldn’t it be?
They follow similar, yet different steps this time. Elias is more familiar with this place now despite only having been in it a handful of times before physically. He is a detail-oriented man. The model ships and carved wooden birds are still tucked away in corners meant to be dismissed. No new paintings aside from the empty coastlines he’s already seen—no doubt a gift from Simon if he detects something else alongside the strokes of that vast ocean captured in the frame.
It’s pleasant, the way Peter stares at him. Equally ravenous for what they no doubt came here for and for attention he doesn’t want to admit, all wrapped up with a lovely sheen of genuine discomfort at how deeply Elias is seeking out the person hiding behind this farce of a home. This room is nothing like the cabin he has never actually set foot into on the Tundra, and it is a place he doubts he will ever be allowed to visit.
No, this place is nothing to Peter. Merely, a place to sleep when he’s forced to anchor. A reluctant tie to society and its dregs, which Elias has happily helped wrap around his legs.
Something in his expression must have changed for Peter reaches out to him, a cold embrace at his back and an even colder kiss at his nape. He doesn’t turn to face him right away, enjoying the strange pleasantry. If he gets his way tonight, giving Peter this now is only fair.
“For a moment, I thought you were taking us back to the Moorland. Though, we are still a little ways off from an actual holiday aren’t we? You will take me there sometime, won’t you?” Elias asks, placing a hand over the one holding his side. They both know he isn’t talking about the house itself. Peter may not know it, but he remembers visiting Mordechai there—truly, it had more to do with that basement and what Peter felt about it than anything else.
“That eager to see? I keep telling you, if you accept my proposal—” He breathes, by his ear, amused until Elias twists around and cuts him off.
“And when exactly would we fit in this ‘wedding’? You’re hardly moored for long and I have an Institute to run. You always struck me as the type to remain engaged for as long as you could, so I would think this arrangement is far better than the alternative.”
Peter’s eyes darken, and it strikes Elias for the first time how deep those still waters really run.
“You… actually like the thought of it. You’d like to call me your husband,” He moves his hands up to cup the man’s cheeks, before delicately moving them down along Peter’s beard to play along his neck. His fingers trace down his pulse enjoying the rapid thoughts accompanying it.
“A connection of your own definition, but one none the less… Are you that worried I’ll leave you behind? Bit hypocritical don’t you think?” The smile he directs isn’t necessarily meant to be cold, but it is piercing in a way he knows is uncomfortable.
“Not really. I’m aware it wasn’t as common in your day, but anyone can get a divorce rather easily now. Marriage isn’t the contract you’re imagining it to be.”
“No, maybe not, but that’s all the more reason for me to wonder what it is you imagine it to be. You can ignore it all you want later, but right now you will look at me and tell me,” Elias starts, stilling his hand to hold at the back of Peter’s neck, keeping him in place to meet his eyes. He doesn’t have an Archivist’s compulsion, but he has intimidation and the invasive, burning reminder gripping tight into the pale man beside him that he cannot run right now.
“Peter Lukas, do you really want to marry me?”
For a man capable of having almost anything he could desire, arranging his life to be as self-indulgent as possible, it’s uncommon those desires ever actualize in the form of wanting another person. Someone so used to the world around him rejecting his existence that he’s learned to soak in it, and pretend he loves it, wearing it as a second skin. And maybe, to a degree he does actually love it. The utter and unabashed way you can love yourself when there isn’t a need to think about another soul in the world.
And that is why at the root of it someone like Elias is both perfect and terrible for him. Because he’s so afraid of being seen, it’s only natural the Eye would show interest. And Elias wishes to know him so intimately exactly because he hides. All the while, he can know with certainty that such a fascination is surface level, having very little to do with the fact it is Peter specifically he is showing interest towards.
It is why Peter spells all the justifications in the world for their relationship. It is why he can indulge in the easy nature of being seen, but not being cared for, until sometimes, it feels like he is wanted—like he wants and wants and will be denied. Abandoned once he’s been found because he knows Elias doesn’t hold on to anything for long.  Besides bones that is.
“Yes,” is all Peter will admit to, impossibly small, but it reaches Elias and warms him in a way that he knows is more than just affection. He rewards the admission, stroking his cheek before learning up to kiss him properly. It doesn’t even occur to him immediately the words were never actually spoken, but plucked from the captain’s head.
There will be many nights where this doesn’t mean anything, but for tonight, there is a vulnerability Elias doesn’t know when or if he’ll have the pleasure of seeing again. In truth, there isn’t really a way they could right now, and he had never imagined himself a married man. Defining what they have would be too much for both of them, but making it a comfortable illusion confined to a ring that he doesn’t have to think about if he doesn’t want to is a preferable solution.
The kiss is chaste, and this time, it is him breaking away and walking to the bedroom, removing his clothes with a practiced patience, expecting Peter to follow suit. Peter flips from fidgety to irritated, finally catching onto what was just discussed, and Elias soaks in the emotions radiating off him hidden in the rustle of clothing. Without a word, he retrieves some coils of rope and lubricant from the bedside drawer, and simply waits and watches.
Peter’s second guessing why he brought him here and Elias is patient—the captain will come to his own conclusions in the end. Either way, Elias knows he will play into the game set up tonight and he only smiles when Peter finally lies on the bed. After a beat, he resigns and raises his arms to the headboard.
Methodically, Elias twines the rope around those presented wrists, and prompts Peter to test the tightness.
“Comfortable?” He asks, looking down. It’s just the ropes he is referring to here, and the flicker of a scowl he receives is indicative that at least Peter has accepted how things will go.
“They’re fine,” He answers him, muted and tense. It pleases him to see him restricted like that, such an easygoing man who usually was so fond of startling others looking instead so impossibly small for someone of his stature.
“Excellent,” Elias murmurs, tone light and notably excited. He stays on top of him, and resumes the languid kisses he’d intended to give before their conversation began. While Peter had been annoyed minutes prior, he can feel the interest in his prick as it hardens, bumping into his backside. He bites the pale man’s lower lip, feeling all at once a rush of cold air exhaled with a moan.
Elias begins to trail those kisses south. Unlike his partner, he prefers to not only take his time, but leave a lasting imprint. There isn’t any doubt who he’s with when it comes to Peter, no, but the man is so obsessed with giving just enough to make a person want more. A lingering note of dissatisfaction, enough to draw in that hungry voracious need for contact he feeds on.
For Beholding though, it is about the experience. About learning and cataloguing all those little things, people don’t even know about themselves necessarily until they’re in the act. Especially the things they don’t know—don’t want to show.
It’s unavoidable like this for Elias not to look. Once the captain is drawn in, feeling really comfortable, he opens that eye and takes a gander at just what marriage means for a Lukas like him.
When he looks, he sees shadows of people. More like impressions or ghosts really, and yet, all come together to welcome a new member. The Moorland House from the outside is about the same as he remembers it. A foggy almost forgotten place that only served as a temple and a tomb.
He sees dances where there is no feeling, stilted haunting music, and tables so far apart from one another that you’d think the room was empty even with the party clearly going on around them. Even the couple in question, once their vows and first dance finished are far apart from each other. As if they were strangers on separate sides of a dance hall—which perhaps, they were.
And that was the problem though wasn’t it? Elias isn’t meant for the Lonely—isn’t willing to truly join that family. Peter knows this. He knew it from the beginning and knew what he was getting into when approaching Elias with even the semi-serious notion of a date, but he’s comfortable with it. With maintaining the distance they already have, only with the facsimile promise of belonging that he could and would never truly have.
Truly what a heartbreaking notion that is so very pitiful and suiting of the situation. Something finally that Elias understands.
As he comes away from that, it’s written across Peter’s face with trails of unwanted salty tears, and etched into his heart. All Elias is doing is plucking away at scabs, poking at a raw gaping sore he never had any intention of soothing.
“Oh Peter,” Elias says softly, no real sense of comfort in his voice. He’s enjoying how far he can stretch this, and it’s with a reluctant, rare mercy he withdraws from the other place he wanted to see in that house. If he tries to look anymore, well, there won’t be anything left—and that wouldn’t be any fun, would it?
DECEMBER 2005
They never do marry. Even when a legal approximation could be considered, there are too many things, and good reasons, that stop it from ever happening. Still, in the end, Elias goes far enough to accept an engagement ring and they make believe it is real, knowing it isn’t just him who often removes it. Honestly, he’s more surprised Peter didn’t take this as a proper sign to simply end the game, not that he’s seen him for longer than necessary the past couple years. Whether that’s his attempt to instill that loneliness he’s so craving or… something else, Elias is too busy to care.
How do you love a man who has no ability to perceive it? Who, in fact, reflexively rejects every attempt at genuine affection?
Elias even hesitates to necessarily ascribe that much feeling to whatever it is their relationship has become. It has enough characteristics for the applicable term of lovers, but there is a history Jonah holds with that word, which has always had an underlying cruelty he can never seem to shake. The both of them do really.
He’s had lovers in the past. Strings of men who’d sing his praises until they saw the depths of him and either were in too deep to get away, or ran as far as they could. Peter was neither of these types of men. They were similar in such a way that it was both a relief and irritating. Men of their nature can attribute as many pretty words and intentions as they want to the way they treat each other, and he knows for as much as Peter can feel for him, what they share is mutual. Perhaps, it’d be better to say they tolerate each other.
Even if there are times that Elias wants to bridge that narrowing gap and see what else is lurking under the surface, he knows such a reality would never exist. And further that he cannot describe the feeling which draws him into wanting that as anything but the endless need to unravel that which does not want to be seen. An itch caused by mere fascination that could and would only end in painful tragedy. If he were a kinder man, maybe he could see himself comforting what he found behind that empty smile, but he knows himself too well. If he had his way, he would utterly destroy Peter and maybe regret it, but he knows he would still do so.
That is why he does not entirely begrudge the man his fleeing and disguises. The way he will run hot and cold and pretend so frequently that he could drift away at any moment, leaving Elias a forgotten memory. It’s his own way of dealing with it, and it’s fitting payback to only scratch at wounds Elias himself pretends don’t exist.
They don’t love each other so much as the idea of what it would be like to be with each other. A thing that in practice never quite turns out the way it’s played out in the imagination. A momentary lapse where it’s easy to pretend that affection is real, a relationship forged on understanding unperceivable to anyone else around them.
Someday, it’s going to destroy one of them—and Elias does not plan on it being him.
MARCH 2006
“Yes, Peter? I do believe this is the first time that you’ve actually been early to an appointment,” Elias addresses the now sudden form of his partner in the chair across his desk. He doesn’t look up from the stacks of department expenses he’s trying to catalogue and update to a budget’s spreadsheet, also laid out on the desk.
“I’m here to cash in a favor.”
“Right, my unfortunate guess regarding Mr. Rayner last year,” he starts, waiting on the captain to prod the conversation along.
“I’m not asking for much, just to give a little back you could say for a project of mine. Requires some specific construction, placing and people in mind, which that eye of yours would be just great for,” Peter explains, laughing at his own joke.
“Your project, yet my work, I see. I wasn’t aware you were looking for a secretary,” He muses, reading over the budget expenses from the research department as he listens. He had hoped to have this aspect of his day squared away before dealing with whatever it was his ‘husband’ wanted to talk about.
“Real estate agents and contractors are so annoying. You love talking to people though, so you’ll probably have a blast. And it’s not like I won’t be there—I have it all planned out, I just need to find the right people to do it. So all I’m asking is for you to do a little research, which is something this place does, is it not?”
“And will I be privy to this project, or will that be a secret for me to figure out?”
“Haven’t got a name for it yet, so no. It’ll be fun—certainly more so than the little experiment Fairchild’s gotten my family sucked into,” He sounds bored, maybe even a bit bitter at that.
“Oh? Right, I heard about that. Do wish I could see how well that will work, but with Mr. Rayner involved, it’s doubtful. Although, if they make it out, maybe I’ll see about them giving a statement.”
Peter shoots him a withering look over his priorities, but Elias ignores it. Luckily, the whole thing has nothing to do with him.
“It just seems like a waste overall.”
“Sometimes it’s about the quality, not the quantity.”
“Say that when you can fund your own Institute,” Peter quips back. There’s no arguing with that necessarily, but it is funny enough that Elias gives him a bemused smile not deeming it with a response.
“Well, I’ll let you know how thoroughly afraid whoever gets stuck up there is and we’ll decide on it later. Now, is there any sort of time table for this other juncture of yours?”
Peter hums, deciding finally to give Elias just a few more pieces to work with.
“Soon as possible, I’ll send over what I have in mind. I’m sure you’ve already heard the rumors, but a supposed extinction might be coming, so the sooner the better. While I’m at it, I’m also including that you won’t interfere when things kick off, but that’s to be assumed, of course.”
For all the rituals attempted over the years that Elias has witnessed, none of them—including his own first attempt—completely worked, so he really doesn’t have any intention of trying to ruin things. However, he also has been paying a little attention to what his current Archivist has been up to and knows that there’s always the chance she will do something. In that regard, perhaps it would be kind of him to give Peter a warning, but he doesn’t control and can’t consistently predict the things Gertrude Robinson deems necessary to handle. She appears to have her hands quite full with stopping other rituals, so for all he knows it will slip under the radar.
“Well, if it comes, it comes. You know I’d much rather watch and see what happens than make any effort to stop either you or any new power emerging. I’m simply curious as to whether it’ll be enough to do anything.”
“Right. Of course, you would say that.” Peter says, and it should bother him that he can’t quite tell what he means by it. Though, from the stare Elias is receiving that feeling is mutual. He has his own pieces being moved along right now and the coming of another power matters very little in regards to what he’s attempting to do. He, unfortunately, also just hasn’t found the right person for it, yet.
SEPTEMBER 2007
Time and technology has diluted it, but there is nothing quite like starlight on an open deck far, far away from any overpopulated, glaringly bright city. Such a sight almost makes Peter understand what it is that Simon sees, but it isn’t the Vast, which is capturing him right now.
It has been a rather bad year for Peter Lukas.
While he hadn’t done much more than provide resources and keep an ear out, the Daedalus experiment had eaten up a chunk of time and money that he couldn’t even feel arrogant about. His bet with Elias on that may have been won, but the man had seemed oh so indifferent to his other little project being ruined. They’ve spoken before about Gertrude and the type of woman she is—still the thought of having all his work tossed away over a newspaper article is infuriating and humiliating.
The waves of the Atlantic can never disappoint him, and for Peter that is a relief beyond measure right now.
There was no need to ask Elias if he knew. If Gertrude was set on it, she would have done it just based on the rumors being passed around, and of the indistinct and few impressions he’d garnered, even he likely couldn’t have done anything. No, what Peter really didn’t want to see was the absence of interest—a blank gaze, perhaps with a hint of that smile he always held, which further spelled dubiousness. He isn’t even sure why it feels vaguely like a betrayal on Elias’s part when technically he hadn’t done anything. When did that start to bother him though? It should be a comfort, a reminder.
Peter watches the waves idly lap at the side of the Tundra and wonders what changed. Moonlight faintly glints off the ring on his finger, and he imagines throwing it into the ocean.
Alone, he can gaze at the stars and the moon and feel at peace knowing there is no one else to share this sight with. No one else he would want to share this sight with. He sailed over eight thousand kilometers away from the one person who he might have considered wanting to share it with, and he’s not entirely sure just when it will be that he returns.
JULY 2011
Vardø, Norway
Peter stares at the phone buzzing on the hotel’s nightstand, wondering once again what possessed him into getting one, let alone keeping it on his person. Convenience in this era often requires time specific urgency, he supposes, but it still didn’t have to be something he liked, let alone abided. As such, when he sees the caller ID as none other than Elias Bouchard, he has half a mind to ignore it. It wouldn’t be the first time, and whatever it was he wanted to talk about could easily be contained to a voice mail.
So he lets it ring. He turns another page in his book, but instead of the notification of a waiting voicemail, the phone lights up once more. Elias is still calling and that is new.
With a sigh, he picks up. Unsurprisingly, the man doesn’t start with any pleasantries. He must know that since Peter has actually decided to answer, he doesn’t have long.
“You’ll still be in Vardø for a few more days correct? I need a favor.”
“Maybe. Depends on exactly what you’re asking for?” Peter complains, shuffling the phone to better squeeze between his ear and shoulder. If he can tune his sometimes husband out well enough, maybe he can still focus on his book. He’d long stopped bothering to chide the other man for keeping an eye on where he is, so he wasn’t planning to even ask how he knew.
“I need you to pick up Ms. Robinson and one of her assistants in Dikson. They need a lift to Zemlya Sannikova, and I figured you would be in the area and have a working vessel.”
He barks a laugh because while he understands, the request is ridiculous.
“Oh you are something else, Elias. Exactly why should I do this favor for you, let alone her? You’ve already racked up quite a debt with me already.”
“Because dearest, you might also want to ensure that the Distortion doesn’t get its way. Of course, if you’d like to exist in that kind of world, who am I to stop you? I’m sure knowing her, there’s another plan up her sleeve, but I figured why pay the extra expenses for a ship when I have you.”
He frowns reflexively at that wording. It isn’t necessarily that he doesn’t like the notion—the implicit possession they both hold of each other and the ease with which that label doesn’t have to mean anything. Peter himself was a firm believer of absence making the heart grow fonder and steadfastly pushes that to its brink, finding the delightful way Elias tries to pretend like he didn’t miss him at all when they next meet. He also ignores the fact that sometimes it was actually true.
“Hm, so you won’t be paying for the fuel needed to get there and back? What payment should I expect then?” Peter’s voice dips at that, finally finding some ground in this conversation that feels comfortable.
There’s a shift of clothing barely audible on the other side of the phone. A pause and he can almost see the calculating and playful smile on Elias’s face.
“Hurry back and you’ll find out.”
The phone call ends before he can answer, and it’s a strange, vaguely defeated sensation caving into his chest at the prospect of returning. Of seeing whether Elias felt anything by his absence and if that will sustain him or preparing for Elias to try and take something else from him.
Doing what he does best, Peter simply shuts the phone off entirely and returns to his novel.
Dikson, Russia – Arctic Sea
A few days later, he finds himself docking at the port town Dikson. Gertrude is waiting with someone who must be the assistant Elias mentioned, flitting and looming around her as if he can keep the blustering winds from reaching her. What really gets Peter about the sight is that he is the one who looks like he could be flattened at any moment, wild blonde hair lashing about almost as bad as his fretting. He doesn’t make an effort to greet either of them though, and merely goes as far as indicating the Tundra is here and ready. He leaves the settling of their new cargo to his crew and returns to his cabin.
Gertrude surely knew where they were heading as that had been another aspect to the fun chat he’d had with Elias, which hadn’t come up. Zemlya Sannikova doesn’t actually exist.
It isn’t until they’re further out to sea, still at least another day away from nearing their supposed destination, does he take to checking in. Night has fallen and everyone is either where they’re supposed to be or trying to fade into the background as best they can. Neither of these things concern Peter as he walks the deck of his ship. The ends of his navy scarf are trying to whip away from him and absentmindedly, he considers replacing it soon. Another gift from Elias that he didn’t actually dislike, but it was getting old.
The cold of the Arctic is familiar, albeit bordering the edge of just too much. Certainly, too much for anyone else on board, which makes it regretful he can’t stay there himself. He doesn’t remain above deck as long as he might if they were anywhere else, and instead hides himself back below.
Despite all the maps stored in Peter’s cabin, sure enough when they reach the spot Gertrude directed them to, there is an impossible island in front of them. He idly watches the pair bundle up twice as much, her assistant fails in trying to take the backpack’s weight for Gertrude and Gertrude… she simply looks at him with those eyes again. They’re worse than Elias’s stare, he decides.
“We won’t be long,” she assures, voice hard. And soon enough, he can’t see either of them anymore.
The perverse urge to abandon her here hits him, but he had already agreed to the favor and heads back to his cabin to wait out however long her business will last. One or two of his crew express interest in looking for themselves and he has to send them off to do something else, wondering if he misread them that badly. No one aboard should care about what’s happening on that island that cannot and yet does exist.
He waits in his cabin and scratches down on one of the maps about where they must be. It isn’t really with any intention of returning—he has no interest in the Spiral.
Eventually, Peter directs his gaze to the necklace he’d received almost a decade ago, hanging on his cabin's wall and left uncovered for their little trip. He assumes Elias would want to watch—be there in his own way. Yet, as he always knows, the captain remains alone. He is intimately aware of how Elias's eyes feel when weighing upon him, and as such hates that he is relieved and disappointed when it is missing.
London, United Kingdom
Elias is distracted. He had every intention of watching while going through the motions of interviewing new employees, but he is floored by the young man taking the seat across his desk. It is not so much that he finds himself incapable of multitasking like he usually would, but oddly that he doesn’t want to.
A gift dropped right in his office is very hard to ignore. And he is a gentleman first and foremost, knowing that the Mother takes priority over his passing fancy and wayward Archivist. Someone already marked by the Web and yet still just as painfully curious despite the event. He observes it all and hopes this one works out. That he has finally found his Archivist.
“I think you’ll fit in quite well here at the Institute, Jon.”
By the time he looks back to the Tundra, it’s over. Gertrude has returned to the ship leaving another assistant to an unfortunate end, and Peter is engrossed in a book, looking utterly indifferent even with the eyes he must feel directed on him now.
Reluctant as the captain was initially, the favor is done. And after Gertrude is dropped off back in England, their meeting is brief. He doesn’t join him this time or take Elias up on what he’d had in mind, however vulgar he had implied it over the phone. Truly, Peter doesn’t really want to be there at all. There’s a hollow smile in the way he says perhaps next time, and leaves again. The lingering chill eats away at him more than he expects, but at the same time, it feels different.
He wonders if his husband will ask why he wasn’t watching earlier, or if he even noticed. He wonders with all that heavy, cold nothingness expanding ever so slowly between them, if Peter has taken his ring off.
He wonders why he doesn’t check. END NOTE: entirely want to give inspiration credit to the imagery of the wedding scene and the moorland house in particular to a Very lovely fic a glass essay which made me realize how much i actually like peter? if you are reading this and have not read it i Highly recommend it, the characterization and atmosphere are absolutely incredible.

I’ll Show You the Way
Summary: Wyatt’s phone demanding his attention is the last thing he wants right now. Lucy has his attention - she always has his attention. She’s saying something about them having nowhere to go but down. And all Wyatt wants to do is groan, and tell her not to jinx them before they’ve even begun. But if the words he’s currently reading on his phone are any indication, jinx them is exactly what Lucy has just done… / Canon divergent from 2x03, Hollywoodland.
FFnet / AO3
I'm probably going to regret this, and you guys are most definitely going to have to kick my ass to keep me writing this - I'm especially talking to you, my goats - but here have an alternative season 2 multi-chapter fic!
This isn't the original prompt I had for this fic... In fact, I don't think that's going to pop up until at least chapter 3, but this is where I felt it appropriate to start! Enjoy!
Wyatt’s phone demanding his attention is the last thing he wants right now. Lucy has his attention - she always has his attention. She’s saying something about them having nowhere to go but down. And all Wyatt wants to do is groan, and tell her not to jinx them before they’ve even begun. But if the words he’s currently reading on his phone are any indication, jinx them is exactly what Lucy has just done…
I have the papers. You need to sign them. When can we meet? Jess x
Lucy watches as his skin pales and the smile drops straight off his face. There’s no longer any trace of the love previously shining in his eyes. Everything was just beginning to fall into place for them. Finally. And now…
“She’s alive.” He whispers.
“What?” Lucy frowns and cocks her head him. “Wyatt, who’s alive?”
He can’t find the words to answer her. How is he supposed to tell the woman he loves that his wife is back from the dead? Instead, he simply hands his phone over to her. He watches as her eyes scan the screen, reading the text. And again, and again. By the looks of things, she’s having just as hard of a time believing the words, as he is.
“Jessica.” Lucy snaps her head up to look him in the eyes, tears threatening to fall from her own. “We must have done something in 1941. Wyatt, I- I don’t-”
Wyatt grabs her around the waist and pulls her into his embrace, bringing his forehead down to rest against hers. “What do I do, Luce? What am I supposed to do?” He takes a deep, shuddering breath. “She’s my wife… but you and I, we… I can’t lose you.”
“You won’t. I promise.” She brings her hand up to wipe away the lone tear that has escaped his eye, completely ignoring the ones now beginning to fall from her own. “Go see her. Find out what she wants. I can’t tell you what to do, what to decide. You have to figure that out for yourself.”
Wyatt presses a kiss to her forehead. “I don’t deserve you.”
“Go, while you can. I’ll cover for you here.” She reluctantly draws away from him, knowing this could be the last time he’ll ever hold her.
“If Rittenhouse jump, you call me.” He tightens the grip he has on his phone, before he slips it back into the back pocket of his jeans. He needs her to know he’s serious, he will not risk his team being sent on a mission with no one to protect them. Or worse, with Flynn to protect them. “I’m serious, Luce. You guys jump with me, or not at all.”
The nodding of her head is all he needs to reassure himself that she’ll call him. He drops one last kiss to her lips, savouring the feel of her against him; before he pulls away, nods once, and turns to find a way out of the bunker without attracting any attention.
“Lucy!” Rufus’s voice echoes down the hallway. “Check this out!”
She watches Wyatt disappear round the corner, before turning back to see what Rufus had found. “What is it?”
He’s holding a tablet when she approaches him, an article loaded on the web browser, but she can’t see what the article is about. “Uh, I told Hedy to renew her patent - which she did in 1955 - so that when the Navy uses it in the 1962 blockade of Cuba, Hedy and George still own it.”
Lucy smiles at him proudly, he did the right thing. Once upon a time, she would have blown up at him for making such a huge change to history, but after all they’ve been through, and all she knows is still to come, she can’t bring herself to care. Hedy was an incredible woman and she deserved every penny she earned from still owning that patent. She shrugs slightly. “Glad they got the credit.”
“Yeah… and about 30 billion dollars to go with it.” Rufus reveals, like it’s no big deal.
Lucy snatches the tablet from his hands. “30 billion!?” She scans the page quickly, before looking back up at him for confirmation.
“Billion.” He nods. “She quit acting, started a tech company. According to wikipedia, Bill Gates aint got nothing on Hedy Lamarr.”
Lucy’s just grabbing breakfast when the alarm sounds throughout the bunker. Rittenhouse… Damnit, Mother! Carol had always told Lucy as a child how breakfast was the most important meal of the day, and here she was interrupting her morning meal for the 2nd day running. She glares at the freshly buttered slices of… rather burnt toast, before snatching one up and shoving half of it into her mouth, inevitably struggling to chew and swallow without choking. She can only imagine what Wyatt would say right now.
With her mouth full, and a trail of crumbs following her, Lucy makes her way from the kitchenette over to the console. “Where are they?” She struggles out around her poor excuse for breakfast.
Rufus and Jiya look at her like she has 2 heads, while Flynn comes up behind her with a: “You want to say that again in English?”
Lucy turns to glare at him as she struggles to swallow the last of her toast. “I said: Where are they?”
“Uh, Salem, Massachusetts. September 22nd, 1692.” Jiya pales as read out the date and location, glancing at Rufus in worry. “Pilgrims?”
“It’s the height of the witch trials.” Lucy’s torn. She’d promised Wyatt she would call him if they jumped, she knows they’re going to need him for this jump. Only she can’t bring herself to do it. Knowing what he’s out there doing… she has to give him more time.
Denise turns to Lucy. “Try Wyatt again. He needs to get his ass back here. Now.”
“Uh, yeah. Yeah, I’ll…” The historian utters quietly, hesitantly, before running off down the corridor towards her and Jiya’s room. There’s no way she can have this conversation in front of everyone without any of them figuring out what’s going on.
With her phone pressed tight against her ear, her head raised to the ceiling in frustration, she mutters: “Pick up, pick up, pick up.” As she paces back and forth across the room.
Wyatt answers the phone on the last ring. “Luce? You okay?”
“Wyatt.” She sighs, releasing a breath she had no idea she’d been holding. “Yeah, I’m fine. I’m just… How are you? How’s… How’s Jess?”
He echoes her sigh. How he wishes he’d never left the bunker. Being here, having seen Jessica again, he’s never been more sure of what he wants - who he wants - and it’s not the woman he’s waiting for to finish her shift. It’s Lucy. If he’s honest with himself, it’s been Lucy since she whisper-shouted “are you asleep?” at him across the waiting room at Mason Industries. It’s been Lucy since she told him she needed him at the Alamo in 1863. It’s been Lucy since he kissed her in 1934 in front of Bonnie and Clyde.
“She’s working.” He rubs a hand down his face. “I, uh, tracked her to the bar she works at.” He takes a breath. “I don’t know how to feel about how neutral she was when I walked in…”
“I’m sure there’s a reasonable explanation.” Lucy screws her eyes shut tight. Talking with the man she loves, about the woman he loves - a woman that isn’t her - is the last thing she wants to do, but it’s something she needs to do. “Maybe you guys are in a fight or something?”
He chuckles at that. “If we were fighting, I’d know. She always had a fiery temper… She says she has something I need to sign.”
That piques her curiosity. “Oh? Did she say what?” Lucy knows what she wants it to be. Divorce papers. It may be selfish on her part, but she prays she’s right.
Wyatt shakes his head, before realising Lucy can’t see him. “No. I got a motel room.” He hates the thought of Lucy thinking about him and Jessica alone in a motel room. “She’s going to drop by when she finishes her shift.”
“Oh. Okay.” Her voice is quiet. He can hear the insecurities.
“Luce… I’m sorry.” He doesn’t quite know why he’s apologising. It’s not like he asked for any of this to happen.
She sniffs once, refusing to let the tears starting to form, fall. “No. No, it’s okay. You do what you have to do.”
“Yeah.” He falls silent for a moment. “Did they jump? Is that why you called?”
“Oh! No. No, I just- I was worried about you.” Wyatt’s sure she isn’t telling him the whole truth, something is wrong. “I miss you.”
“Luce, please.” He stands abruptly. There is no way his team is jumping without him. “Tell me the truth. Rittenhouse jumped, didn’t they?”
“I-” She sighs. She hates that he can read her so well, even when he’s no where near her. “Yeah, but listen. It sounds like a quick simple mission. Rufus and I will be fine without you,. You need to do this Wyatt. You need to see Jessica.”
“I don’t care how simple it sounds. You’re not jumping without me.” He doesn’t say good bye before he hangs up the phone.
Lucy sighs, before she reluctantly makes her way back into the common room. She’s about to tell them that he’s on his way back - he didn’t say it, but she knows him, just as well as he knows her - when Denise’s phone rings. The agent pulls the phone from her back pocket and glances at the screen. Frowning, she looks at Lucy.  “It’s Wyatt.”
Wyatt curses as he hangs up the phone with Lucy. He wastes no time in finding another contact in his phone: Agent Christopher. Lucy isn’t going to be happy with him for doing this, but he doesn’t care. She can be as angry at him as she wants. As long as he’s the one in that third seat when they jump.
He doesn’t give Denise the chance to say a word when she answers her phone. “Do not let them jump without me! Understand?”
She sighs down the phone. He can imagine the irate look on her face in this moment… He doesn’t want to imagine the trouble he’s going to be in when he returns. “Well, you better hurry up and get back here then.”

Shallura Fic Rec #3
Time for another Shallura fic rec list! (categorized to the best of my ability)
Shallura Rec List #1
Shallura Rec List #2
Mulitchapter/Long Fics
(I’m including fics that have been updated/concluded since the last fic rec list)
Into the Woods - (3/3) - @andtheblueberrymuffin
Something wet and cold splatters against Allura’s cheek.
A moment later, a second drop lands on her forehead, and she groans, raising a hand to rub at her face. She feels… groggy, as though she just woke from a long, deep sleep. The wetness on her face makes no sense. She cracks her eyes open and finds that she is staring up at a gray sky, full of storm clouds, heavy with rain.
This is not where she last remembers being.
Or: The one where Allura and Shiro end up lost in space.
Slow burn, hurt/comfort, plot, huddling for warmth, mystery, feelings, gore related to hunting
The Princess and the Pilot - (5/?)  - @ashesandhoney
In an alternate timeline, Shiro gets picked up by the Galra before the war starts and eventually ends up being given to the Princess of the Alteans as a joke or an attempt to start a war or as a mistake. Whatever their motive was for sending him, Allura is now left trying to figure out what to do with him.
Alternate universe, slow burn, prisoner Shiro
The Space Between Stars - (6/?) - wordswithdragons ( @shiroallura)
Stranded across the galaxy, Shiro and Keith must survive the cold blooded creatures that lurk upon the planet they crash landed on. Pidge, Hunk and Lance find themselves caught up on a Galra infested planet of winged aliens, while Allura and Coran face coming to terms with their greatest hope and sorrow: Altea. // A rewriting, fix-it fic of season two, featuring families, backstories, aliens, loss, and love. More info inside.
No Need To Say Goodbye - (1/1) - @smolsarcasticraspberry
The juniberry tree blossoms every seven years, and when it does, a gateway opens up to another world - a world that Shiro first explores as a child. There, he meets Allura. They do not speak the same language, but children do not need words to play. Every seven years, when the gateway opens again, Shiro steps through to visit the girl he knows on the other side. But the gateway only stays open as long as the juniberry flowers bloom...
AU, angst, childhood friends, reunion
Masks - (1/5) - @braincoins
Shiro screws-up and Allura has to cover for him by pretending they're married. This means Shiro is now involved in the negotiations with an alien race rumored to have sent the Galra packing. They could be a great help to the Coalition, so long as they're not offended or insulted in some way. So it's Allura's job to convince them to sign on, and it's Shiro's job to be her consort. Neither of those should be that difficult... right?
Fake/pretend relationship, semi-au, Fluff & Politics, pining!Shiro, the other paladins & Coran are here too but not as much
When We Were Young - (8/8) - @ashesandhoney
When they were young they had hidden under tables at embassy events and eaten stolen pieces of cake. They had climbed up onto the roof at school and made up stories about the teachers walking to their cars at the end of the day. They weren’t the same species but that had never stopped them before.
It’s been tens years since he last saw her.
Childhood friends, AU - canon divergence, marriage proposal, alien culture, no Voltron
Find Me In The Night - (2/2) - @smolsarcasticraspberry
"Ah, yes. Charged particles from your local star interact with the magnetic field of the planet in areas where the magnetic field lines are close together."
Shiro laughs, in spite of himself. She's the nerdiest princess he's ever met. Not that he's met many, of course. Or any at all, before her.
"We call it an aurora. It's beautiful, isn't it?"
***
When aliens land on Earth looking for a mysterious weapon under the Arctic ice, Captain Shirogane of the Galaxy Garrison is tasked with accompanying an alien Princess in her quest.
Mature, Shallura Holidays Month 2017, Pre-Kerberos Mission, Earth AU, winter fic
Touch - (3/3) - @ashesandhoney
The Sacred Alteans could bend quintessence to their whims but wielding that much power couldn't be consequence free.
Allura loses her sense of touch and has to learn to function without it.
A fic with scenes including: nearly bleeding to death, some angst over being the last of a species, fancy ballgowns and space pirates, tickling, sparring practice, Shiro being really into Allura wearing track pants, blow job jokes, quite a bit of pining, Allura glowing, some smut.
Explicit, mutual pining, fluff, mild hurt/comfort, AU - Canon Divergence, light angst
Of Small Talks and Forget-me-nots - (6/6) - Part 1 - Opl_Mor
Shiro has been chasing Allura since he was six and she stumbled into his land of make believe- his escape from the strain between his parents. A misfit pair with no one but each other try to navigate an often cruel and unforgiving world. Unfortunately, fate isn't always kind and sometimes pairs are pulled apart. This is a story of hardships and heartbreak, but more than that, it's about the power of mending those parts of life. This is about a modern princess saving a lonely boy in more ways than she could possibly know.
Childhood friends, friends to lovers, bullying, divorce, Shiro’s got a lisp, Allura is a ballerina black belt
Woman King - (20/20) - @juniperallura
Queen Allura rules over the Altean court, in the company of her young cousin Lance. As the bloody war with the Galra drags on, she searches for unlikely allies- including a supposed defector dwelling on the edge of the palace village. A Shallura historical/fantasy AU (with side Klance).
AU - historical, AU - fantasy, side Klance, light angst, slow burn, pining, mutul pining, secret relationship
When the Sun Sets - (4/?) - rainingWolf
Out of everyone in the entire galaxy, Shiro just so happened to chance upon Allura on a starry night. Set in a zombie apocalypse AU.
Zombie apocalypse, Zombie AU, romance, drama, action/adventure, angst, Altea, alien planet
Across the Universe - (2/?) - saintgenevieve
Allura takes a deep breath. “Pidge…what is a soulmate?”
“What?”
“Shiro told Keith I was his ‘soulmate,’ but I don’t really understand what that word means.”
Mature, Pining, serious pining and angst, Allura’s relationship with the paladins, friendship, love confessions, true love, grieving, some Klance
Loving the Alien - (3/?) - hatandgoggles
The story takes place in 1954, in a town in New Mexico. Roughly seven years after a mysterious object crashed into the nearby desert, a woman Shiro met that night returns to his diner when he needs it the most. Or will she only drag him into an adventure he never asked for?
AU - 1950s
Let Go Darling - (1/?) - evelyn_hayes
Allura blinks. She's suddenly outside, the pale moon shining down on her and the old house behind her. There's a man gripping her hand. Tall and shrouded in a peculiar jacket. His hood shadows his face, but she makes out a scar across his nose and a patch of white hair dangling from the front of his head. She searches his face and sees-
Black eyes.
Witch!Allura, Hunter!Allura, Demon!Shiro, alchemy, magic, crossover, feat. the IMPALA BABY, but in white, guadian demon, self-harm, road trips, true names, vassal and liege, angst, klance fluff, Shiro has PTSD, protective Shiro, implied/referenced abuse/torture, businessman Lotor
There is Love in Your Body (But You Can’t Get it Out) - (1/1) - @andtheblueberrymuffin
In the end, it doesn’t matter how exactly Shiro falls in love with Allura. He just does and it’s… Not a problem, exactly, but a consideration that lurks in the back of his thoughts. He doesn’t plan to do anything about it. They’re in the middle of a war. This isn’t the time for love. And even if it was, he is what he is and she is…. Beyond him.
Or: The one where mistakes were made and Shiro has to crash a wedding that shouldn't be happening in the first place.
Angst with happy ending, feelings, wedding crashing, emotional trauma is the real villain here
Duties of Heart - (1/1) - anglmukhii
They were both Jedi, but she was also a Queen. There were worlds of differences between them, yet they can only find peace and solace in each other. But between an Order that forbids it and her position that demands that if she marry, it must be for the good of her people: is there truly any hope for them?
AU - Star Wars Setting, break up, making up, angst, fluff, one fight scene, Jedi Shiro, Allura’s a Jedi too but she’s a queen as well, mentions of Keith, Shallura Secret Santa 2017

Shallura Week 2016, sequential, the whole gang makes an appearance, drabbles and oneshots, connections, vague Klance if you squint
Lose It - (1/1) - viiisenya
Shiro is a decent enough hitman sometimes doubling as a thief, when the occasion (and payout) called for it. The last person he thinks would call for his services is influential businessman Alfor Altea of Voltron Inc., and what Shiro thought would be an easy job turned out to be a little more complicated thanks to one company heiress. He's usually the one that does the stealing but he didn't think he'd be the victim of a theft himself.
Hitman/thief AU, implied Klance, one-shot
We Were Young Once (We Are Young Again) - (1/1) - @andtheblueberrymuffin
They win.
In the aftermath, Shiro can’t quite wrap his mind around it. The war consumed every thought he had and every bit of his energy for so long that its sudden absence leaves behind a gaping hole. He expects to wake up, to find that Zarkon and Haggar are still out there and that the victory was just some cruel trick executed by his mind.
Or: The one where Shiro and Allura learn how to live outside of the war that's defined their lives for so long.

Shiro and Allura Both Can’t Sleep - mckinlily
It is a generally held assumption that Shiro and Allura, both being unable to sleep, met up in the quiet of the night, and over the course pouring out their hearts to each other, fell in love. And while it is true neither Shiro nor Allura is very good at sleeping and they have met up at god-forsaken hours in the Castle, the heart-wrenching conversations are more a fiction than reality. This is due to the fact that—despite all attempts to appear otherwise—Shiro and Allura are actually both very young adults and just as susceptible terrible 2am ideas as anyone.
They do fall in love though. But it goes like this:
OR How Shiro and Allura got a lifetime ban from Hunk's kitchen and other fun stories.

Many decades in the future after team Voltron defeated the evil plagues of the Galra Empire, Allura sits in the palace gazebo with her husband, Shiro. They go through the photo albums they have collected over the years and Allura savors the intimate moment as the former Black Paladin holds her in his embrace while narrating the memory of each photograph.

“Oh, Shiro.” Allura smiled. “He’s not trying to ask for your hand, he just thinks you’re nice to look at. It’s harmless.”

paternal instincts, part 3
Emma’s fear of pregnancy leads Killian to find—and use—a spell that allows him to carry their child instead. A canon-divergent CS pregnancy fic, just with the roles flipped a bit. (mpreg; rated T for implied sexy times) | AO3

Part 1 | Part 2
Chapter 3: Breaking the News
Summary: With Killian's pregnancy confirmed, it's time to let everyone else know. How will Henry, David, Snow, and the rest of Storybrooke take the news?
The view of the horizon from the deck of the Jolly Roger was typically a calming sight, but today, Killian felt a bit more on the seasick side. It wasn’t because it was particularly choppy or anything—he’d certainly weathered worse without getting green around the gills.
There were two possible reasons for his queasiness: one, it was the start of the bouts of nausea that usually accompanied this stage of pregnancy; or two, it was because he was telling Henry today.
It had been a just over a week since they’d received confirmation they were expecting, so it had been a week of debating how to let the lad know. Emma had wanted to just come right out with it, insisting Henry would take it fine. And Killian knew he would. But he couldn’t shake the need to break the news himself, so a weekend sailing outing seemed the best way.
Henry was 16 now, almost 17—nearly a man—but watching him tie off a line, it didn’t seem so long since he’d first taught him those knots, back after their return to Storybrooke from New York. How did that boy become this lanky teenager, right in front of Killian’s eyes? Would that happen with the next one?
From his place at the helm, Killian tried to blink back tears at the sudden onslaught of emotions—definitely the most obvious evidence of his state so far—as his hand drifted to his still-flat stomach, currently bundled in a parka.
In an attempt to pull it together, he shook his head and sniffled; the fact that it was still sharply cold out didn’t help matters. But the noise caught Henry’s attention anyway.
“You okay, Killian?” he shouted from the lower deck, done with what he was working on and moving towards the quarterdeck. Instinct told Killian to lie, insist he was fine and brush it all off. But it was time be honest.
“I’ve never been better, lad,” he answered truthfully. “Come here,” he added, beckoning. “Give me a hand with the anchor and then let’s chat.”
Henry bounded up the stairs two at a time and gave Killian a curious look. “Good chat or bad chat?”
“Pretty good, I think,” he replied optimistically. Henry accepted it, relaxing a bit as the worked together to cast the anchor. From where they floated, Storybrooke looked small on the gray horizon; it was hard to believe such a seemingly quiet town had changed his life so dramatically.
“Now, are you going to tell me why you brought me out on the ocean in March, when there’s still snow on the ground?” Henry teased as they leaned against the ship’s railing. “I mean, I’m pretty sure I saw an iceberg, and I know you’ve seen Titanic.”
Killian just chuckled; Henry was far too astute for his age. “Aye; I did bring you out here for a reason.” He swallowed, trying to calm his stomach as he began. “Now, you know your mother and I love you very much—”
“Hold on; I gotta stop you right there,” Henry interrupted, to Killian’s surprise. “There are only three things you can be getting at by starting with that, so I’ll spare you the speech, even if you’re good at them.” Killian exhaled, slightly relieved, but wondered what Henry suspected. “I can eliminate the first one, because there’s no way you and my mom are getting divorced with how much you two get it on.” Now Killian was blushing; apparently, they weren’t as discrete as they thought. “And I don’t think either of you are dying, because Mom would be a lot more mopey if that was the case.”
“Right on both counts so far,” Killian confirmed. “So what’s your next guess?”
“You guys are having a baby and don’t want me to feel left out or that I’m being replaced.”
Killian released a breath he didn’t realize he’d been holding. He really shouldn’t have been surprised that Henry would figure it out. “Yeah, we are.”
“Really?” Henry was grinning.
“Really.”
Killian had to step back to brace himself against Henry’s excited embrace. “I get to be a big brother?” he practically shouted into Killian’s shoulder.
“And a damn fine one you’ll be,” Killian replied, hugging Henry close. “You’re truly alright with this?” he asked, searching for confirmation when they broke apart.
“Of course. I get why you guys would be worried, but I promise, I’m fine. I’m excited for you. Honestly, I’d been wondering when you’d finally get around to it.”
Killian snorted; given how aware the boy apparently was of their nighttime activities, he probably assumed it was inevitable. “It took some time for your mother to warm up to the idea. She doesn’t exactly have the best memories of being pregnant.”
“I know,” he answered. “So, when’s the kid due? How far along is she? I haven’t noticed Mom acting too different yet.”
Killian’s stomach twisted again; now he had to reveal the next part. “Well, um, that’s the other thing; your mother isn’t carrying the babe...I am.”
Henry nodded, less surprised than Killian anticipated. “Oh, so you’re...you have a…” He could tell Henry was trying to be polite, but resorted to just gesturing vaguely at Killian’s abdomen.
“Ah, no.” He could tell what Henry was implying. “I’m...borrowing it, I suppose, from your mother. Magic,” he said with a shrug, offering it as an explanation.
“Say no more,” Henry said, waving him off. “Seriously—the less I know, the better.”
“Agreed,” Killian answered, laughing.
“So...how do you feel? Oh no, I didn’t hug you too tight—did I?” Henry’s ability to adapt to any scenario would never cease to amaze him.
“You’re fine, lad. And so am I; a wee bit nauseous, and I expect that will get worse, but I’ve no complaints of yet.”
“Yet,” Henry threw back, teasing. “Don’t worry; I’ll help out with the yard work and whatnot when you’re too big to move.”
“Hey! I won’t get that big.” (He wouldn’t, right?)
Henry just gave him a sideways glance.
“Well, I appreciate the offer nonetheless.” Suddenly, the image of Henry looking after and helping mentor his future sibling flooded Killian’s mind, reminding him of his own relationship with his brother. In a weepy voice, he told him, “You’re gonna be a fantastic big brother.”
“Are you crying because your emotions are going crazy?”
“That I am, and you better get used to it, mate,” he quipped back, laughing through his tears.
Henry just smiled back. “I think I can handle it. And I can’t wait to meet my new sibling.”
There was nothing left to do but seal it with a hug.
They wanted to wait a bit longer before telling her parents—they weren’t concerned about whether or not they’d approve, but just wanted to make sure everything was okay before Snow inevitably went into baby-prep mode.
At least, that was the plan. Until the day during his tenth week when Killian emerged from the restroom at the station, after going a round with the porcelain basin, to find David standing near the desk looking worried.
“Hook, are you okay?”
Truthfully, the nausea was getting the best of him. It wasn’t to an extreme level, but he couldn’t wait for the day he didn’t find himself hovering over the toilet several times. He was getting by on bland foods and ginger ale—which he proceeded to grab a can of from the mini fridge by the coffee machine—but he was rather tired of this part of pregnancy.
And tired in general. “I’m fine; just ate something that didn’t sit right,” he explained in a weary voice as he plopped down on the sofa and propped his feet up on the coffee table, which had been aching something fierce. “I’ll be ship-shape in no time.”
David clearly didn’t believe him, and was now staring at him curiously. “Nice shoes,” he commented in an investigative tone, nodding at the slip-on sneakers he wore. Emma had bought them for him as a more comfortable alternative to his boots, and given that his ankles had begun to swell, they came in handy. Of course, he couldn’t tell Dave that. “Uh, thanks.”
His stomach gave a lurch then; he pressed his left arm on it to combat the pain and took a sip of the ginger ale, sighing at the almost instantaneous relief.
“What, no rum with your drink?” David was surprised, it seemed.
“Afraid not; adding alcohol to an upset stomach is generally a bad idea.” And, obviously, bad for the babe, but he found he didn’t miss it as much as he thought he would. If anything, that part was going to be better for him in the long run. He just hoped Dave bought the misdirect.
“And you’re sure it’s just a stomach bug?”
“What else could it be, Dave?” What else could the prince suspect? This situation was far from common.
“It’s just...you remind me of...never mind.”
“Of what?” Killian demanded, nearly losing his patience.
“Well, you’re acting like Snow did when she was pregnant.”
Oh. Then perhaps he did have an idea. Killian had no response to that.
David picked up on Killian’s silence. “See, normally this would be where you’d laugh with me and refute it, because there’s no way, right?”
Killian just swallowed.
“Right?” David repeated, sounding nervous.
Killian glanced up at him; David was staring with an almost unreadable expression that fell somewhere between excitement and disbelief. And Killian just didn’t have it in him to lie anymore. “I’m afraid I can’t do that, actually.”
Looking much like his daughter when he proposed the idea in the first place, David’s jaw dropped open, and for a long moment, his eyes just darted back and forth between Killian’s face and stomach, which his hook still rested on. “You...you’re…?” his father-in-law sputtered.
“I’m pregnant, David.” It felt good to say it out loud to someone other than Emma.
“Holy shit,” he blurted out, then practically collapsed on the couch next to Killian. “Seriously?”
“It’s a little far-fetched to make up, don’t you think?” David continued to stare at him with a wide-eyed expression; he obviously had many questions. “Ask away; I can tell you want to.”
Thankfully, no one came into the station while David interrogated Killian on the hows and whys of his gravidity, and seemed relieved to find out that it was definitely his and Emma’s child and that it was planned.
“I’m gonna be a grandfather again,” he finally concluded, a dreamy smile taking over his face.
“Aye, that you are.” Killian couldn’t help his own grin, or the happy tears that sprang forth unbidden—he was still getting used to the intense mood swings.
“Come here, man!” David practically shouted before pulling Killian into a tight hug. “Oh, I’m so happy for you guys. Let us know if you need anything. Anything.”
“Thank you, mate,” he answered in a watery voice. “You have no idea how much that means to us.” They broke apart and Killian wiped the tears from his eyes. “Just...please don’t tell Snow just yet. We’d planned on waiting a few more weeks, just to be sure of everything.”
“I’ll do my best; you know how she is.”
“I know.” Both men chuckled. “We won’t make you hold it for long. I’m assuming this isn’t what you expected when you came to the station, though?”
“Definitely not.” They shared another laugh and got on with business—Dave just needed help with a permit for some work to be done at the farm—and once it was squared away, he made to leave so Killian could get a bit more rest.
“And, uh, Killian?” he started, almost timidly, as he stood by the door.
“Yeah?”
“Thank you for doing this,” he said, gesturing toward Killian’s abdomen. “I’m sure it means a lot to Emma and...it means a lot to me, too.”
Again, Killian found himself emotionally overwhelmed. “I-it’s my honor, really,” he stammered, trying to keep his tears at bay this time.
They exchanged a nod, bid each other farewell, and Killian resumed his spot on the couch. He placed his hand low on his stomach, and whispered, “You’re going to have the best grandfather, little one.”
He told Emma of his encounter with her father that night, but they remained in agreement on the decision to wait to tell Snow, or anyone else, until they were out of the first trimester. And David had kept his word, but not even a week later, at family dinner night at the farmhouse, their plans were derailed.
Barely even five minutes after sitting down to eat, Snow blurted it out. “Killian...are you pregnant?”
The bite of salad that was halfway to his mouth stopped in midair. He threw a panicked look at Emma, who wore an equally astonished expression. “I, ah, um…” he stuttered, knowing it was useless to lie but caught off guard nonetheless. “I—” “We—” he and Emma started at the same time, but then stopped at the other’s voice, both chuckling nervously. Then she gave him a half smile and shrugged; her way of saying that they might as well.
He turned back to Snow, smiling nervously. “How could you tell?”
Snow replied with a shriek of joy, making Neal jump in his high chair, and leaping out of her own seat to bring Killian into her embrace. “Oh, I’m so thrilled for you!” Just as fast as she’d hugged Killian, she dashed over to Emma to do the same, and then collapsed back at her spot at the table. “How far along? Are you going to find out the gender? Have you picked nursery colors yet? Oh, wait til I tell Granny!”
“Slow down, Snow,” David interjected, chuckling and placing his hand over hers.
They quickly filled her in on the details—eleven weeks, yes, and not yet—before Emma had to wonder, “Mom, why aren’t you asking why it’s him and not me?”
Snow brushed it off. “After all the crazy magic I’ve seen in my life, it was a pretty easy answer to come to. Plus, it was so obvious.”
“How so?” Killian asked; he’d been trying hard to hide the symptoms.
“For starters, there was an awful lot of ginger tea in your cart when I saw you at the grocery store a couple weeks ago. Killian, you stopped wearing your boots, I’m assuming because your ankles started swelling. I woke you up from a nap at lunchtime the other day. And tonight, you’ve got water and Emma has wine and not a lick of protest was made—which I’m assuming means you already knew, David, which is a conversation for another time.”
It probably shouldn’t have been so surprising that Snow was that observant, but still, he was blown away by her keen eye.
“Dang, Mom—why haven’t we hired you as a detective yet?” Emma joked, also impressed.
“You couldn’t afford me,” she teased back. They continued to chat about the pregnancy over the rest of the meal, and Snow attempted to push seconds on him, but his stomach was uneasy even with the amount he’d eaten. “Oh, I’ve got just the thing, then,” she exclaimed and dashed off to the kitchen, only to return a couple minutes later with a tea-like concoction. “Here—this helped me a lot with both pregnancies. I know they say ‘the sicker you are, the healthier the baby,’ but it gets to a point when there’s no way the baby can be anything but immune to everything.”
“Definitely.” The mixture wasn’t the most appetizing, but it worked wonders—for the first time in weeks, he was able to hold down a savory meal. He didn’t dare test it with dessert, but it was nice to spend an evening at peace without dashing to the lavatory. “Thank you again for that, Snow,” he effused as they got ready to leave. “You’ve no idea the relief this is.”
“Oh, I do,” she quipped, and pressed a piece of paper in his hand that he could only presume carried the recipe. “But seriously—anything you need, let us know. And I promise to keep this a secret until you say it’s okay.”
Emma threw a nervous glance at Killian—they both knew her mom’s track record with secrets.
They posted it on Facebook, with a brief explanation, that night.
Storybrooke being Storybrooke, it didn’t take long for word to spread that they were expecting. And for the most part, everyone was receptive and supportive. Belle handed over her pregnancy books, Gepetto had already offered to build a crib and rocking chair, and Aurora stopped him the other day to offer tips on how to get through the aches and pains; considering their history, she in particular surprised him.
Having the knowledge out there made everything seem a bit more real. Obviously, he was aware of the changes going on in his body, minimal as they were so far (but still a difference from the past couple centuries). Being able to share their excitement with others, though, added a level of reality he hadn’t expected. Yes, the child was his and Emma’s, but the bean would also become a member of this tight-knit community and already had so many people looking out for it; it was almost overwhelming.
Also overwhelming was the fact that at thirteen weeks, he was still getting morning sickness. It was at least living up to its name and generally only occured in the early part of the day, and Snow’s home remedy was a godsend, but he was rather tired of it. At least now, he didn’t have to explain the reason he dashed to use the lavatory before taking a seat at the counter at Granny’s.
Today, a hot mug of ginger tea with honey was waiting for him after his daily trip. It was exactly what he needed, and the hot tea soothed his upset stomach. “Thank you, milady,” he said, sighing.
“Make sure you drink all of it, son,” Granny commanded from farther down the counter, where she was refilling Grumpy’s coffee cup. She’d been quick to revoke Killian’s caffeine once she got the news, but still had her way of looking out for him. “The usual today?”
“Actually…” The odd thing was that even if the nausea lingered, the weird cravings had started to trickle in. “You wouldn’t happen to have any anchovies, would you?”
Granny just shook her head and chuckled, but shortly after, he had an anchovy and swiss omelet in front of him with hash browns and hot sauce.
“Oh, Lady Lucas, this looks perfect. However did you know?”
“Been there, done that. Eat up, hon,” she directed with a loving pat on his cheek. Being mothered was certainly an unfamiliar sensation, but not an unwelcome one. And oh, but this meal was perfect; he let out an involuntary groan of pleasure after the first bite.
Back at the other end of counter, Killian heard a scoff followed by some unintelligible grumbling. He took another bite and then glanced down, only to see that Grumpy was giving him a sidelong stare and muttering to himself.
“If you’ve something to say, dwarf, I suggest you speak up,” he called out in his most menacing tone.
Grumpy slammed his mug down on the counter, sloshing some over the edge. “Am I the only one that thinks it weird and unnatural? Can’t we just have one normal thing around here? Why’s it all gotta be magical bullshit?”
That was the reaction Killian had been expecting, honestly. At one point, he’d braced himself for it, but when every else was so receptive, he’d let his guard down. So this—this was an unexpected punch to the gut emotionally, only made worse by the fact that his were already all over the place.
He stared down into his plate, vision going blurry with tears. What had they been thinking, going through with this? What had he been thinking? Just because something was possible didn’t mean it had to be done. They could have found another way. They could have—
His spiraling thoughts were interrupted by an odd thunk, the shatter of glass, and a collective gasp. He immediately looked up, only to see Grumpy’s broken mug lying in a puddle on the counter and an arrow stuck into the opposite wall.
Granny stood in the doorway from the kitchen, now-empty crossbow leveled at the dwarf. “Seriously, Leroy? This entire town only exists because of a curse, a werewolf makes your bacon, and you hatched out of a goddamned egg. You’ve got no room to call out anything for being unnatural.” She lowered the weapon and took a few steps forward. “And you can’t even try to tell me that pregnancy isn’t hard, so you’ve got some options here: apologize, leave, or both.”
Killian sniffed and wiped his eyes, unsure of what he was seeing; had Granny actually come to his defense? Support was one thing, but this…
Grumpy suddenly turned sheepish, barked out a quick “sorry” in Killian’s direction, then threw some cash on the counter and ran out of the diner with his proverbial tail between his legs. The hush that had settled over the diner dissipated with the clanging of the door bell and everyone returned to business as usual, as though Granny firing off a round inside and berating a customer was a typical occurrence (which, surprisingly, it was not).
“Don’t you dare listen to a word he said.” Granny was suddenly in front of him, with a comforting squeeze of his hand even though she still held her crossbow in her other arm. “Unconventional does not mean it’s wrong, and I can guarantee that every woman in this town has your back, and most of the men, too. Grumpy is just...grumpy.”
He sniffed again and nodded. “I know, and thank you, milady. It just was a bit of a shock.”
“And your already-crazy emotions don’t help, right?”
“Aye,” he agreed with a watery chuckle.
“You’ll get through it; don’t worry. And for the record, I think it’s terribly sweet of you to take this on.”
He could feel tears welling again, but happy ones this time. “That means more than you know, Lady Lucas,” he thanked her, trying not to cry.
She just squeezed his hand again and then told him, “Now eat up. You’re growing a person; gotta keep up your energy!”
“Will do, ma’am,” he answered, obeying her command. Suddenly starving, as if his rapid emotional shifts had taken that much out of him, he scarfed the rest down and finished his tea before heading to the register to pay.
But she waved him off. “My treat today. And here,” she said, handing him a small bag. “This is for later.”
He could smell the blueberry muffin and bear claw through the packaging and his mouth watered. “I truly can’t thank you enough, Granny. For everything.”
“You can thank me by letting me take care of you; think you can do that?”
“I think I can manage,” he answered, smiling.
“Good.”
As he headed out and down to the station, his hand wandered down to his stomach, as he’d found himself doing more and more often lately. Just knowing how many people were going to look out for their child filled him with joy, and he couldn’t wait to introduce the bean to the world.

Then a typo on an expense report leads to an unexpected phone call that results in a simmering crush on both ends of the line, despite neither knowing what the other looks like. More deaths follow, and the two of them get sucked into the world of religious cults and ritualistic murders. In the face of that, Dean's feelings for aforementioned partner are the least of his problems.

A Little Slice Of Heaven by onamelancholyhill
Jim Morrison once said, “The most important kind of freedom is to be what you really are.” That was Castiel Novak’s motto in life, and the reason why he accepted his grandmother's inheritance and took the responsibility it implied.
Dean Winchester, a remarkable accountant at Sandover Bridge & Iron Inc., however, had other priorities. He lived to serve, hidden in a mask that didn’t allow him to be honest with himself, but lonesome and boring.
When destiny made their paths cross, in a less than promising way, with Dean as the instigator and Castiel as his victim, Dean’s mind started wandering, in between pies and cakes, coffees and muffins... What if Mr. Morrison was right?
After all, as the guy used to say, "there can’t be any large-scale revolution, until there’s a personal revolution first."

Dean finds excuses to keep going back, and Castiel finds excuses to keep giving him special treats.

There was no recognition there, just wild animal fear. Time stood still for an eternal few seconds, and Sherlock took a shaky breath. “John—”Spell broken, John spun and bolted back into the woods. Still heaving for air, Sherlock took off after him.

Some people have mundane things. “Did you get the mail?” “How was work today?” “Where are my keys?” That’s painful because people just simply don’t know when it’ll come. Every time the simplest, most everyday things happen, their blood goes cold.
Some people have things like “did you do the homework?” “My mom said it was okay.” “This is my least favorite class.” That hurts worse for their parents, because they know it’ll come early and they can’t protect them, and while it’s one thing to love and to lose, it hurts worse to never know at all.
Still others have words like “can I get your phone number?” “What’s your name, hon?” “That’s 14.46 at the next window.” And it’s quite possibly the cruelest thing of all to know that you’ll meet them once and never know them at all.
But Sam has spent his entire life tortured by the words He’s the only one who understands.
He wishes he knew what they were about. He wishes he knew who his soulmate was or why they say those words but he’s heard them a fair number of times in his life, always with someone he’d spoken to again later.
This is the story of how Sam came to realize who his soulmate was, and subsequently lose them.
~~
It starts when an angel falls into bed with his brother. Well… another angel. Dean’s already had sex with at least two.
Sam finds them just minutes post-coitus, spread out on the couch naked and barely covered with the blanket over their waists. He walks into the den and his heart breaks, so he covers it with disgust and mild disdain and thinly veiled support.
“Jesus,” he mutters, just walking past them into the kitchen. “At least the next time you do this, don’t do it on the couch. This is a communal space and I still live here, okay guys?”
Dean looks relieved and relaxed, and grins at him. “Yeah,” he replies. “Thanks, Sammy.”
Sam forces a soft smile at them. “Anytime. But seriously, get some clothes on.” He glances in the pantry before scoffing and fishing around in Dean’s discarded jeans for the keys to the Impala. “I’m getting fast food drive thru. Text me what you want from Arby’s.”
Dean scoffs but doesn’t argue. “Alright, see you later.”
Sam smiles and watches him relax against Castiel. It’s amazing and makes him happy to see Dean so comfortable and himself with someone. Sam’s never seen him this exposed and vulnerable. If Cas is what it takes, Sam will swallow his feelings for his brother’s sake.
Dean closes his eyes and curls closer, resting on Cas’s chest. Sam stands in the doorway, just watching them, for a long moment before he opens the door and disappears to get them dinner.
By the time he gets back, they’re decent and they’ve cleaned themselves up. He can almost forget the very vivid mental images he has of what they may or may not have done to each other.
~~
Sam supposes the next part is when Cas comes to him with an interesting proposition.
“I would like to marry your brother,” he says bluntly. Sam stares at him.
“Uh…” he says. “Okay. Cool. You’re telling me this because why?”
Cas bites his lip. “I understand it is customary for one to ask their intended’s family for their permission and or approval before proposing.”
Sam snorts. “Not anymore. That was about forty to fifty years ago, at least. And usually that’s a man proposing to a woman, and he’d normally ask her father. Dean’s not a woman, he’s a male-identifying person, and you’re not a man, you’re a multidimensional wavelength of celestial intent shaped vaguely like a man, and I’m not Dean’s father, I’m his younger brother, so really none of that applies here.”
Cas purses his lips in the way that some people do when they’re trying very, very hard to keep from laughing. “Very well, Sam. Would you mind helping me pick out a ring, at least?”
Yes, Sam wants to say. Yes, I would mind so very incredibly much, because the very thought of you being with Dean tears me into pieces in a way that I never thought I could feel. Because somehow, despite being tortured and raped in the Cage for thousands of years, I have never felt such intense pain as I have in the months since you and Dean inadvertently revealed your relationship to me. I would mind, Castiel, because I’m in love with you, too. Dean isn’t the only Winchester to fall for our angel.
But he can’t say any of those things. Because he’s a good and faithful little brother, not to mention he can’t corrupt a literal angel that way, not as an upstanding Christian, and he refuses to destroy their relationship when he loves them both so incredibly much.
So he doesn’t say those things, and instead he forces a smile and says “yeah, I could do that.”
Castiel lights up like the sun peeking out from behind a cloud, and Sam knows he made the right decision.
~~
They go ring shopping together that weekend. In honesty, it makes Sam feel a little pathetic. He’s out and about with his best friend whom he’s secretly madly in love with helping him buy a ring to propose to someone else. It makes him feel sick. He’s miserable.
But if having Dean Winchester as his one active parental figure during the most formative years of his life taught him anything, it’s how to play through pain, repress your emotions, and convince everyone around you – including yourself – that you’re totally fine at all times.
So Sam does.
His faked enthusiasm must be pretty believable because Cas buys it, and so does the cashier. They pick out two options – platinum and white gold – and they’re looking at them both side by side. “The white gold is more easily damageable, but it’s lighter,” she explains to them. “The platinum is heavier and more expensive, but also more durable.”
Sam glances at Cas. “Well, money is a nonissue for us, so honestly? I think you should go with the platinum.”
Cas smiles. “I would be inclined to agree. Thank you, Sam.”
Sam nods. “You’re welcome,” he murmurs softly. The cashier smiles at them.
“I don’t see a lot of couples ring shopping together,” she tells them as she rings up their purchase. “It’s actually really sweet that you’re choosing your rings together.”
Cas shakes his head. “No, Sam and I are not a couple. I am  hoping to end up marrying his brother.”
Her face instantly pales. “Oh,” she manages. “It’s just… you seem so… Are you sure you’re not soulmates?”
Sam purses his lips. “Cas doesn’t have one, and… how can anyone be sure? No one really knows if they’ve met their soulmate until they die or walk out of your life forever.”
She nods. “Of course. Silly of me to ask. Here are the rings, anyway, and, uh… well, I hope your brother says yes.”
Cas takes them from her graciously. “Thank you,” he manages. “I hope his brother says yes as well.”
~~
Dean says yes.
~~
More accurately, he screams it like a girl being proposed to on a fancy dinner date in some clichéd heterosexual romantic comedy or chick flick. Sam can hear him from the other end of the Bunker.
It would be cute. If Sam’s heart wasn’t currently lying on the floor smashed into a million pieces by a sledgehammer.
~~
And then comes the part that really ties the bow on all the beautifully horrifically miserable events of the past several months. Dean and Cas ask Sam to officiate their wedding.
And Sam… Sam is an idiot, and a guilty one at that. So Sam agrees.
He gets ordained online, Dean picks up the marriage license from the county clerk’s office, and they’re legally married in the library of the Bunker.
Sam is only a little ashamed to admit he cries himself to sleep that night.
But Cas and Dean are happy. He keeps reminding himself of that. Cas and Dean are together, and happy, and that’s all he’s ever wanted for his friends, no matter what his personal feelings might be. No matter if those personal feelings are partially feeling his entire being torn in half every time he sees them together and partially wishing he could tear his brother in half every time he sees them together. It doesn’t matter. He has to remember that.
It doesn’t matter. It will never matter. He will be miserable happy on his own and Dean and Cas will be happy together.
The world spins on. Sam’s heart remains broken.
~~
The turning point, the thing that simultaneously fixes everything and makes it a thousand times more painful, comes on Dean and Cas’s first wedding anniversary.
Sam makes them a video, because he doesn’t know what else to do for them, and then he disappears to let them have loud sex while he gets drunk alone.
Cas finds him around two in the morning, which Sam supposes is technically no longer their wedding anniversary, but he doesn’t really care because he’s drunk and tired and he’s been awake for twenty-seven hours and he wants to die. But Castiel is here, his angel, the angel he’s been in love with practically since that first far-too-long handshake. And he’s happy, because he’s always happy with Cas, but he’s depressed, too. Because Cas belongs to someone else. Cas always has and always will belong to Sam’s brother, and never to him.
Dean doesn’t have a soulmate. Sam’s happy that he found someone else without a soulmate who makes him happy. Sam’s happy that Cas managed to somehow be at peace with himself, to love someone so deeply and truly that Sam’s measly, weak, moronic human brain could never comprehend. And he knows it’s selfish to wish that he were the one being loved like that.
He’s torn apart. He can’t fix this.
And that is how Castiel finds him, laying on the floor, drunk out of his mind and depressed enough to put a bullet in his mouth if he had the energy to lift his gun.
Cas sits down on the floor next to him. “Are you alright, Sam?” he asks quietly. Sam shakes his head.
“What part of this… gives you the okay that I’m idea.” He frowns. “Idea that I’m okay. Yeah. That.”
Cas purses his lips. “Well, at least you’re being honest, I suppose. What are you feeling right now, Sam?”
Sam laughs bitterly. “Nothing,” he confesses. “I feel… nothing. I’m broken and… and cruel… and mean. I suck. You should- you should hate me, Cas. I’m the worst.”
Cas shakes his head. “No, Sam, I will never hate you. You are my best friend.”
“I don’t wanna be your best friend!” Sam shouts, slurring wildly. “I don’t wanna.” He sounds a little like a petulant child, but he doesn’t particularly have an issue with that. It’s just his alcohol-blurred brain anyway.
Cas gently pries the bottle from his hands and sets it on the floor, far out of his reach. “What’s wrong, Sam?” he asks.
“Why did you marry Dean?” Sam wonders aloud. “What- why?”
Cas sighs. “Well… I married your brother because he’s hotheaded and passionate and he cares a lot about people even if he doesn’t show it. I married him because I’ve seen his soul and it’s one of the most beautiful things in the world. I married him because he needed someone to be close to him, to help him heal from everything that’s happened and he needed someone besides you because the two of you… you escalate each other. I married him because I was in love with him, Sam.”
Sam sighs and stands up. “I’mna go to bed,” he mumbles.
“I’ll help you,” Cas offers, holding him steady and leading him toward his bedroom. Sam leans subconsciously into the comforting touch and the warm promise of more, drawing them from Cas as long as he could until Cas inevitably leaves him again.
It’s just that… Sam knows he will never be enough. He’ll never be enough for Cas – Cas who wants Dean, who wants his green eyes and his bowlegs and his symmetrical face and his gender-conforming male normality. Cas who wants Dean in all his fucked-up, dysfunctional glory, who wants to heal him, because Sam can’t do it because – he’ll never be enough for Dean, either – Dean, who is ruined in so many ways, who was abused and maltreated, who hated himself all his life. Dean who believes he is broken in so many ways that cannot be fixed, Dean who resists Sam’s every attempt to help him because all Sam has ever wanted was for Dean to feel okay, even just for a little while, because Dean never takes anything for himself and that’s why Sam has to sacrifice the angel to him, because Cas is the one thing Dean will accept for his own wellbeing and Cas can help him in all the ways Sam will never be good enough to. Sam can’t help him.
Sam will never be good enough, and he’s long since made his peace with that.
But as Cas deposits him in his bed, walks away from it, Sam calls out his name, makes him pause in the doorway and turn. “Yes?” he asks patiently, always so patient, so good, putting up with Sam and all his bullshit on his anniversary when he should be with Dean, should be celebrating how happy he is with the man that isn’t Sam. Sam hates himself for this, hates himself for everything. The guilt is overwhelming.
“It’s because he understands you, isn’t it?” he asks. It’s a miracle he can get through that full sentence.
Cas nods sadly. “Dean is…” he trails off, staring at the wall. “He’s the only one who understands.”
He closes the door behind him, and Sam is far too drunk and far too close to sleep to figure out why those words seem so goddamn familiar.
~~
Sam wakes up screaming.
~~
Sam wakes up with one of only two people in this world still living that he really loves standing over him, a blade pressed to his throat. Sam screams and looks up at him and pleads for mercy, and Dean’s cold, emotionless eyes don’t soften in the slightest.
“Dean,” Sam sobs. “Please. It’s me, I’m your brother, I love you. Please…”
Dean doesn’t say anything. He just lifts the First Blade above his head and plunges it deep into Sam’s chest.
The light dies in Sam’s eyes, and the second it goes out, Dean is himself again.
Just a second too late.
~~
Dean will never forgive himself, Cas knows. When he returns to the Bunker from his pie run he finds Dean vomiting into the toilet, and he drops everything to be at Dean’s side. “Dean,” he whispers urgently. “Dean, are you alright? What happened, are you sick?”
Dean wipes his mouth on his sleeve and looks at Cas through empty eyes laced with horror. “I killed him,” he whispers. “He’s dead, Cas, I killed him. This thing, the Mark… I didn’t even know what I was doing. It was like I just woke up, and I was in his room, and he was dead.”
It takes Cas another couple seconds to figure out what he’s talking about. His heart drops into his stomach. “Sam?” he croaks. His voice is low and horrified.
“I lost control,” Dean whispers, and then he lets out a choked, miserable sob, a horrible sound from deep in his chest that breaks Cas’s heart. He never wants to hear it again.
Cas pulls him into his chest, holds him close, and doesn’t try to say anything. He knows there is nothing in all the world that anyone can say that will make this better. Nothing will ever fix what Dean has lost, and a death by the First Blade… that’s irreversible. They’ll never get him back.
They go back to him, to find him, and they peel off his shirt to clean him up, to put him in a new one. But Cas’s heart sinks lower, from the pit of his stomach into the floor, because in a delicate scrawl across Sam’s left bicep, where he always used to wear his armband, are the words He’s the only one who understands. But they’re not black like most people’s words. They’re blue.
They’ve already been said.
Blue like my eyes, Cas thinks, and he thinks back to the night before, the last words he’d said to this friend, and he wonders if Sam loved him that way. Why wouldn’t he tell me? he thinks, but even as he thinks it he knows the answer.
He will never be the same again. He and Dean will never be the same.
He closes his eyes, extends his wings to fly into the city, to fly anywhere else, and a set of Enochian words float across his vision.
His heart must be in the center of the Earth now.
He pulls one large, invisible, dark wing in front of himself and sees them, seared into his feathers.
It’s because he understands you, isn’t it?
“I thought I didn’t have one,” Cas breathes. “I always thought I didn’t have a Gracemate.”
He does.
He does, and it’s the brother of the man he married. He does, and he pushed him away again and again, repressed his feelings for him because he swore to be monogamous to Dean and he’s not an angel who breaks his promises. He does have a Gracemate, and he promised himself to the wrong person, gave his heart to them, committed himself fully to Dean when Sam was right there.
If he could have had them both…
But there’s no use in thinking that way now, not when Sam is gone and there is nothing Castiel can do to change that. He doubts it will stop him from thinking it, though, because knowing too late is one of the cruelest things in the world.
~~
They give Sam a hunter’s funeral. They burn him behind the Bunker, in the woods near where he used to love to jog. Cas remembers his favorite places.
They don’t take any cases for a while. Instead, they go across the country on an unofficial Goodbye, Sam Winchester tour. They visit his favorite diners, play his favorite songs, find his favorite spots in nature in all fifty states. They finish back in Kansas, they go back to Lawrence, and they see the house. Cas can’t bring himself to touch Dean at all, and Dean doesn’t ask.
Cas waits a full week after they return to the Bunker.
“Dean,” he says quietly. “Dean, we need to talk.”
Dean sits down at the table. “Alright,” he says softly. “What about?”
“About Sam,” Cas replies. “About… us.”
“What about us?” Dean asks, his guards instantly up. Cas takes a shaky and completely unnecessary deep breath.
“I can’t stay married to you,” he replies softly.
Dean’s face visibly pales and Cas thinks idly that Dean is wearing the same expression he himself wore just over a year ago when Dean told him he couldn’t continue to live in the Bunker.
“What?” Dean asks weakly. “I’ve lost so much and now you’re going to take my marriage?”
“Just listen to me, Dean,” Cas implores. “The words on your brother’s arm, did you see them?”
Dean swallows and nods. “‘He’s the only one who understands’?” he recalls. Cas casts his eyes down to the floor.
“Those were the last words I said when I left Sam’s room that night. Before—” you killed him “—he died. And now… I have the words Sam said to me right before that tattooed on my wings in Enochian. Dean, your brother and I were soulmates. And I don’t feel right continuing in this relationship with you. I feel as though I am dishonoring his memory.”
“Did you love him?” Dean asks abruptly.
Cas glances at him and slowly nods.
“Then why were you with me? You shoulda been with him.”
“Because… because I loved you too. And I never thought Sam would love me. I never thought I had a Gracemate, either, until Sam died. I thought you and I were more compatible, as two beings without mates.”
“But you would have made Sam happy. I didn’t have to fall in love with you,” Dean snarls, sounding angry. “I wasn’t fated to. But Sam was. Instead of letting us be happy you just strung us both along.”
“I didn’t know!” Cas insists.
“I don’t care,” Dean growls. “Get out of my sight.”
~~
Within three months, they’re divorced.
Dean never apologizes for the things that he said to Cas that night. Not even in the note on his bedside table the night Cas finds him hanging from the ceiling in his room, a rope around his neck.
And then Cas is alone again, to wander this strange, cruel world without his two closest friends to guide him.
This is how it was intended, he knows. He was never meant to fall for two human men. The fact that he did just proves that he cannot be trusted with his own destiny.
But if this is how he was created, why does it feel so unjust?
If he was meant to live this way, why is he so lonely?
He wonders. Will he ever feel happy again?
Will he ever feel anything again?
