Aztec civilization, which consisted mostly of the Nahua people, believed that, in a primordial time prior to the “Fifth Age”, in which we currently live, their gods obscured humans’ ability to see the past and the future as clearly as the gods could

Old legend say the nature of this obscuration was if the gods “breathed on a mirror” that would otherwise show the true nature of the world around in the past, present, and future

Experts suggest the gods purposely clouded the mirror for fear that otherwise humans would know as much about their own future that the gods did

Divination through ritual process is an act that goes far back in time in native Mesoamerican tradition and is even described in the creation myths as something the gods did prior to their creation of the world

The Maya and the Aztecs both believed that some people within their societies had a closer relationship with the gods and supernatural domains than others, and thus had increased access to information about the future or advice from gods

These human prediction experts were: 1) ritual specialists, known as “day-keepers” or “soothsayers”; 2) astronomer-priests who observed and recorded astronomical information on the movements of celestial bodies across the sky; and 3) members of the royal family who could conjure dead ancestors or patron gods for advice or favor and were intermediaries

Day-keepers still exist today in many native Mesoamerican communities, and they interpret a 260-day ritual calendar using divinatory codices as a guide to determine the fate or auspiciousness of specific day sign-number combinations in the calendar

Day-keepers were consulted when a child was born, before its naming ceremony, since one of an Aztec person’s names was always based on their day of birth and many characteristics of their lives are predetermined by this date/name

In many Mesoamerican traditions, dreams are also considered to be a type of communication with the supernatural world

The same was true of events occurring in the natural world that Aztecs believed were omens with predictive meaning

Aztecs had certain common beliefs about the everyday predictive power of random, natural events, but some things occurred that people thought were strange enough to warrant a consultation with a ritual specialist for a higher level prognostication

I.e. the omen of the fiery comet or the bird with a mirror on its head that were observed and recorded and correlated with the arrival of Europeans

While all social classes consulted diviners and “soothsayers,” special high-ranking ritual experts from the noble classes were consulted by royalty in matters of state

In addition to the interpretation of dreams, omens, and the calendar, soothsayers also used various techniques involving external stimuli for prognostication

By creating randomized patterns with everyday materials (i.e. casting maize kernels or beans across textiles or into water), diviners interpreted patterns as portending particular future events

Interpreting randomized inputs (i.e. throwing dice) is part of a class of prediction more generally known as sortilege

They also used scrying or peering into reflective surfaces (mirrors, crystal, water), observation of the movements of animals or insects or observations of color changes in water to predict positive or negative outcomes and even to diagnose illness

Similarly to ancient Maya, Aztecs also made careful observations and records of visible astronomical events over extended periods of time that were used to predict future like-in-kind events or to back-calculate eclipses or other celestial phenomena that could then be correlated with socio-political or natural events that impacted life on the earthly plane

Pt 0 good omens i make predictions for season 3 after watching three episodes of S1

[WARNING THESE PROPHECIES ARE BY THE GOOD OMENS MASCOT AND KNOWN MESSENGER OF APOLLO AND SO CLEARLY 100% LEGIT STAY IF YOU DARE *OMINOUS TREMBLING*]

First, because I am a messenger of Apollo, I am compelled to write cryptic verse before I explain it to you, so take what the Voice of Delphi speaks to me:

When the anticipated arrives

An embrace is born, the love shall thrive

The angel will repay his demon's kiss

A bird will sing, a child will be missed

Heaven recedes like an evening tide

Led with pen by a wordsmith-guide

The home on earth more holy than above

Pain will strike, the panacea is love.

Now, because we are not in ancient Greece and I am not as cruel as you, I will explain as best as I can. You wanted to know if we will find salvation in season 3. Like Edgar Allan Poe, you asked me, is there, is there balm in Gilead (season 3)? Unlike the raven I will not say nevermore, but here:

We all know Crowley and Aziraphale will get together, but I'd advise you that the smell of angst is in the air. I say this as both prophet and writer, but for the story to end happily and still keep us suckers glued, it will drag Aziraphale and Crowley through the dirt to get there. You will get the happy ending, but at an emotional price that even season 2 did not prepare you for.

The fucking apocalypse plotline is going sneak in again, I smell it like ice on mountain air and fungus in a moist cave. Mostly the fungus metaphor.

Aziraphale will kiss Crowley first in this season. It is only fair.

There will be a hug. An Aziraphale-Crowley hug. Who hugs whom? Delphi has not spoken to me of that in detail, but a wee little nightingale told me it is a possibility they will both fall into the hug and we will know they needed it like they needed breathing and it wasn't planned but it was inevitable. The whole fandom can then sleep again.

I expect at least two more ineffable husbands breakups. But you guys survived season 2 (I haven't yet. If I die, can someone reblog this with 'he told us so!' when season 3 finally comes out?) so I have faith in you, war veterans.

Crowley will know, finally, that he is more than forgiven. He is loved. Aziraphale will know, finally, that the real heaven was the home he found with Crowley. Heaven and god will retreat. It's okay, guys, it'll take time but it will happen.

2 - The high priestess

Her knees began to hurt, sitting on the stone floor of the temple. It was dark, the sun had gone out hours ago, yet she could hear the hustle and bustle of the street outside. It was a night of celebration, the anniversary of the coup some twenty years ago, a celebration of returning to normalcy after a tumultuous time in the city’s history.

There was song and dance, the grand bazaar would remain open for the entire night. The docks and river would be filled with little ships, forming a floating market.

She had been sitting here for hours, deep in thought. Trying to make sense of the dreams she’s had recently, a double headed snake. It slithered beneath her feet, and she didn’t know what to make of it. Snakes meant a lot of things, time, death, healing, deceit. And the branching of its heads… could mean a decision, inner turmoil, double nature, paths ahead. There were too many possibilities for this sign for her to be able to determine what it means.

She took a deep breath, inhaling the incense and smoke filling the chapel of Istus. Smoke surrounded her, smoke surrounded the city. It hid all the other scents of the room, obscuring her vision ever so slightly. The incense was laced with poppy oil, it made her head dizzy, but not unable to think. When she had become a priestess she was told it would open her mind to signs better.

In front of her, a set of divination stones. Five jewels made smooth with the water of the ocean, with celestial runes corvette into them. She picked each of them up slowly while uttering the prayer to Istus under her breath.

As she leaned forwards, the weight of her veil adorned with metal ringlets shifted enough to make a silent jingle in the ever so silent room. Now holding all the jewels, she stroked one of them with the pad of her thumb, paying close attention to how it felt, how the other jewels shifted

She held up all five jewels to the statue of Istus. The goddess’ noble features stared onward, encased in marble. Light from the outside hit the crown of her head and gold embedded in her shined through even in the dark. The light scattered to the nearby pillar and formed a thin multicolored line.

Istus was listening, she knew it. She would need to ask the right question, to see the right answer. She needed rest from the mind consuming thoughts of the snake. Who is it? What do they want?

She lowered her hand and brought them to her face. She closed her eyes and exhaled on the stones and dropped onto the floor right in front of her.

Stone against stone, the jewels clattered around, taking their time to settle. She kept her eyes shut until she didn’t hear anything anymore. The noises of the world outside faded out and she was truly in her inner sanctum.

Slowly she opened her eyes. In an inky darkness, a single candle shines a light. A new smell fills the air, not the earthy scent of the temple, but something warm and sweet, a hint floral, mixed with the fresh breeze and saltiness of the sea.

She looks at the floor, a crack in the stone. Wide enough to put her hand in. She goes to reach for the crack when a sound of a hiss reaches her ears. And out of the crack emerges a snake with two heads.

And just as it’s whole length of the body is out, from the nothingness that surrounds her, a sword drops onto the snake, pinning it’s tail to the floor.

She flinches at the sudden sight and is bolted out of her trance. She is back at the temple of Istus, the smell of cedar and poppies fill her nostrils once more, and she can hear the people outside the temple carry on their party.

Rereading Rick Riordan books bc hey the tv shows coming out soon and I have questions about what Camp Jupiter was like before the titan war.

Like. I’m gonna go on a limb and say they did not have access to the Big Three prophecy about Percy. Because… it was about Percy. And if the Romans also had access to the prophecy Jason would have been haunted by it growing up, but he never mentions it in the books.

Not to mention the smaller reasons. Like… Camp Jupiter doesn’t have an oracle. Major prophecies are found in ancient texts. And since this prophecy was made at the end of WWII idk how the Roman’s would know about it. And the fact that Zeus/Poseidon/Hades aren’t really considered the “big three” in Roman mythology. I mean they are technically, but Neptune isn’t really a big deal at all and Pluto got a downgrade. #1 is Jupiter and then #2 is Mars. So the prophecy doesn’t really make sense for them anyway

But like. If there’s no prophecy, that raises different questions.

Jason is the only Roman son of Jupiter born since WWII. But before WWII Jupiter/Zeus was as Horny as he was in the myths (I’m assuming). So it suddenly goes from dozens of children of Jupiter every ten years or so to fucking zero? And then one turns up suddenly? Same with Neptune and Pluto, honestly. All of a sudden, bam, no more children.

And it’s not like we can say “well maybe the Roman versions of the big three weren’t held to the oath” bc we know Jason is the only son of Jupiter for a while bc he says it. And Hazel was born before the pact was made and brought back to life bc, plot-wise, she couldn’t have been born during the pact, hades/Pluto was the only one to keep the oath.

And you can’t even say they knew about the oath just not the prophecy, bc no one brings up said oath to Hazel or Percy when they show up randomly. They’re not suddenly worried about gods breaking promises.

So what was going through the Roman’s heads? Jason says a lot about being held to a high standard bc he was a child of Jupiter but I think that’s an understatement.

Imagine the camp goes 5-6 decades without a single child of Jupiter. No one knows why, bc Jupiter’s a bit of a slut and that’s really not like him. And then all of a sudden this feral two year old shows up. And he’s a son of Jupiter. And… that’s it. No explanations, no prophecies, nothing?

“Ok Romans. You thought no children of Jupiter was ominous? Well here is exactly one child of Jupiter all of a sudden. He is also two years old but Lupa expects him to be recruited immediately. Good luck.”

I mean seriously that kid must have been an urban legend.

At least with Percy everyone knew why Poseidon hadn’t had any kids in the last 5 decades. Even if Percy was technically some terrible omen of bad things coming towards Olympus at least the Greeks knew what to do with him. The Romans were lucky Jason is an all American boy who worked his way up the ranks. If he had been like Percy he’d have easily become an eldritch horror by the age of four.

hey! two questions

1. Are gods born with their divine gifts or do they acquire them thanks to humans? For example, Hermes is the messenger god but that gift was recognized by the other gods and there was some change in him or was his "natural" gift simply recognized and that's it?

2. In the case of Apollo, how does the gift of prophecy work for him? can he "see" all the time? Does he have flashback-style "visions" or can he just sense what's going to happen? I was wondering this because in the case of Troy, Apollo would already know that Troy would fall, right? Or in the case of Typhon attacking Olympus, would he know that Zeus would momentarily lose to Typhon?

Most of the time, gods are born with their powers. There are some exceptions though. For example, Zeus' thunderbolts are forged by the Cyclops, he didn't always have them. And while Apollo and Artemis naturally have some powers - like healing, producing light, easing childbirth for Artemis, foresight for Apollo - their ability to bring sudden death and diseases is possible due to their weapons (which were forged either by the Cyclops or Hephaestus). In the case of Hermes, I suppose his natural powers are his wit and his smooth tongue XD and it was because of these qualities that he was appointed as the messenger of the gods. And the rod given to him by Apollo also helps him bring peace. So I'd say gods get their titles because of their already existing powers and not the other way around. Whatever powers they acquire through their weapons is not because of humans either.

About the second question: yes I'm sure Apollo can see the future whenever he wants to. He can just see things happening, and sometimes he also studies the omens to predict what's going to happen. But that doesn't mean he would always use his foresight every single day. It sounds exhausting tbh. In Lucian's satires, Zeus comments on how tiring it must be for Apollo to cater to all the people consulting his oracles. Also, even though he can see the future, he can rarely ever do anything to change it :') so I like to think for the sake of his sanity, he chooses not to take a peek unless he's asked to, and just face things when they happen.

ST's set in the northern Colorado Rockies where they border the Great Plains. Somewhere unpopulated in the northern Front Range!

Landmark names are usually named after past leaders/healers/deputies of the Clans, who I just made up on the spot (except I have a Blizzard playthrough on Clangen so I used some of those leaders and important cats.) To come up with a lot of the names I researched local fauna. Colorado has a LOT of elk and a lot of large carnivores! Summer Thunder has a storm motif (did you know) so a lot of the place names have to do with that

I'm going to go ahead and put the Clairvoyant/Prophet stuff under a cut because I write headcanons as I go and it gets so lengthy lol.

SORRY IN ADVANCE. this is like 3/4 just for me so i can put it in my document

Clairvoyants are the cats who would have "a strong connection to StarClan" in canon text. StarClan (usually called the Stars in-universe) are not an explicit thing or confirmed. There is something spiritual going on, but it's a lot more like a Primal Force than it is "My Dead Aunt Says Hello To Me In My Dreams." The technical name for cats who are tuned in to this spirituality is "Clairvoyants", though it's an ambiguous label and not something that ever puts cats into a group. Most cats aren't clairvoyant or are to a very low degree (this works since level of clairvoyance in any universe doesn't affect how much you believe in a higher power).

Prophets, a role found only in StormClan, are kind of like canon Medicine Cats except I separated the role into its composite Prophet and Healer. Some cats are both, in which case they'll call themselves whichever one makes more sense - usually Prophet because it's rarer and so it can feel closer to your identity. A Prophet is sort of like how Ancient Greek Oracles were. They are rare and usually have a medium to extremely high level of Clairvoyance. (ex. Leafpool, Goosefeather.) Their role, like medcats, is to speak as the Stars' voice and share wisdom with the Clan. The Stars do not "give prophecies" in the literal sense that they do in canon - cats interpret things how they will, like we would in real life. It's easy to think of an omen or prophecy if you want to hear one.

Storm cats just take it really seriously because they REALLY love the Stars. They have a higher genetic predisposition of Clairvoyants, so they have become really connected to spirituality and piety. They believe in fate and destiny and will use the Stars to justify any achievement. Naming ceremonies often go like "You are so lucky to be blessed by the Stars with such amazing jumping skills - your new name will be Pigeonleap." (Maybe Pigeonleap just got really good at jumping because he trained for his entire apprenticeship. It doesn't matter. It's the Stars.)

Pilgrimages, which I may start calling something cool (like the Prophet's Ascent maybe?) are taken by aspiring Prophets when they want to prove their connection to the Stars. Prophets are usually apprenticed to someone who is also Clairvoyant/a Prophet or a Healer if there isn't one. When they reach the end of their apprenticeship they are sent to hike Cloud's Tooth via Thunder Ridge/Lightning Point. Usually their mentor will follow them as far as the path from the Ridge up to Lightning Point (I'm thinking this is like a day's hike), but the mentor in most cases has already done the hike and is not interested in doing it again.

Cloud's Tooth is tall (probably around 9-11,000ft???) and not too forgiving. Cats are sent when the weather is predicted to be good, but anyone who's been to the Rockies knows that can change in about five minutes. The Clans are crepuscular in my universe like regular cats, so, in the interest of safety, cats usually just try to hike the mountain during the day. It can be 7-9 hours to the summit. They spend the night at the top and the Stars speak to them (whatever that means for the particular cat.) No one else except Prophets hikes this mountain, not even people - it's rocky, without water in most places, and very windy. And slick when wet. And worse when snowy. And you'll notice all the surrounding landmarks have something to do with storms.

That being said - a cat who makes it up and down again is pretty much guaranteed the Prophet role. Otherwise, they probably just fell to Stardom down a scree slope.

As sediments dry out, they slowly form shapes in the cup and on the saucer than get interpreted as representing real-life concepts and objects like eagles, mountains, the number six, or the letter B

Hey, I'm Firestar/Toast/Honeydew. I'm a queer POC, 18+ and I use any pronouns. I'm focusing this blog on "rewriting" the first 5 arcs of Warriors (Dawn of the Clans, The Prophecies Begin, The New Prophecy, Power of Three, and Omen of the Stars). sortis: same as sors

auspice: matches the name augury

tuor: sight/eyesight (theres a lore reason for this option)

arcus: rainbow (grackles are rainbowy)

nox: night, dark, blindness

🍂- Feeling the urge to infodump so I'm gonna talk about some changes made, specifically regarding what we're doing with the ancients and the tribe

The ancients are still up in the air (Fallen Leaves and Rock still exist at the loch) but the tribe has been replaced with cats in an old village in the Scottish highlands. They don't really have a name other than "the village cats" and they're made up of both wild cats and kittypets. They don't have a naming system, no rules, just living together and helping each other where they can.

Half Moon is still there and she looks like this:

She's respected by the village cats for having divine knowledge, she's a little mysterious about it. Think Oracle of Delphi. Cats come to her for pretty much everything, giving her a piece of prey as payment. When Nimbus (Grey Wing) visits her over concerns about a plague spreading through the village, Half Moon reveals a recent omen. Nimbus helps her interpret it, and they come to the conclusion that cats are destined to find a new home. Nimbus doesn't really want to go but he feels he has to.

The cats go on the journey, settle in the new territories. The kins are formed, etc etc, and we don't hear of the village until TNP. The prophecy cats reach the village (Purdy leads them there) and meet Amalthea, a direct descendant of Half Moon. Her practices have been passed down through her kin, although a little skewed.

The village has been dealing with a problem. A wild boar has been chasing and harassing cats in the village. It's more of a prominent annoyance than an actual threat, and the village is training cats to go after the boar and chase it away once and for all. However, the kins still have an inflated concept of self-importance in this, and take it on themselves without the village knowing. Feathertail still dies. Maybe Amalthea predicts her stopping the boar, but its more of a misinterpreted warning.

Anyway, the village cats are not happy. They made it clear they could handle it themselves, and still, the kin cats stepped in to save the day. No one was supposed to die. They weren't the heroes they thought they would be. They are told to leave the village and return to the kins.

I'm unsure how prevalent the village cats will be after that.

Biography

'Her name would be Deirdre and where she went there would be evil.' These were the words from the Father of Druids, Cathbad; these were the words that would mark her fate before the girl was even born. Once it became known that one of the greatest oracles of doom would be born soon, many mage families and clans, even large institutions and black market groups, wished to buy adopt, and take Deirdre under their care. Divination is an extremely powerful tool. If used correctly for one's benefit, depending on how great is their ambition, they might even take control of the world... 'Luckily', once the girl was born, she wasn't sold to any group with such aspirations. Instead, she was sold to the Mictíre clan. That's how she became Deirdre anBhróin.

The child was raised in the clan's manor, the House of Danu, so there would be no need to worry about the possibility of the oracle being stolen. There, she was taught how to read her divinations, how to control her skill so she wouldn't go mad, and how to give shape to her magic. The girl learned from the greatest druids, demons and fellow oracles of the time but it was a lonely existence.

Then, one day, she met a younger boy, Sétanta macNessa, one of the members of the original family of the Mictíre clan. He became Deirdre's first friend and they made a plan so she could leave the House of Danu and be part of the world. That's how Deirdre ended up applying to be part of the Bureau of Supernatural Affairs (B.S.A.) without the clan knowing. She was immediately accepted due to her divination skills. Since she still belongs to the Mictíre clan, any divination request from them must be answered, but she now resides in the facilities of the B.S.A. and gets to go out and participate in missions that require her divination skills.

Expertise

Divination: Oracle of doom. First seen as a bad omen, oracles of doom were repudiated and scorned by humans and mages alike until they learned that the foretellings of tragedy could be used for one's advantage. As an oracle of doom, Deirdre can only see tragic and violent future events that sometimes show themselves in an explicit manner or prophecies that would be nearly impossible for any other than her to understand.

Familiars: Huginn (thought) and Muninn (memory/mind). Those are just their names, they aren't the actual ravens of Odin. Invisible to the eye most of the time, they fly all over a commanded perimeter and bring information to Deirdre, warning her of any possible danger that might come her way. Since the clan specialized in canina familiars, they tried to teach her how to summon her own canine familiar but Deirdre ended up summoning ravens as they represent prophecy, insight, transformation, and intelligence.
