Batch of Yellow Flowers
Part two of my story!
@grotesquegabby @post-itpenny Because some of your characters are in this
I apologize for this is a very long part, so I hope I don’t bore you at any point hehe ^^’ There’s just a bunch of things I needed to include and hell, I even decided to include some of the things meant for this part in the next one
Part One /// Part Three
Night had not yet fallen, yet the ballroom where several relatives and servants were all gathered around or in fact spread all over seemed to have a greater light than the sun outside.
Lights were all on and illuminated the grand ballroom, though these seemed to be nothing compared to the lights gently being adjusted as they hung from certain spots in the room. Other lights were on other places, these serving the purple to illuminate the room with colors pertaining to Halloween whilst others specifically made gave off the shapes of pumpkins and ghosts and such.
“No, no, no! I said that no cake right now! The cake is going to be rolled in when we start to sing!”
“Jells, take a breather and just relax.”
“How am I supposed to relax when they can’t follow simple orders!?”
“You’re starting to sound like Mama Carol.” mentioned Cosmos who had been standing next to his sister who impatiently tapped her foot, both watching as two men rolled the large cake back and away into the kitchen where it came from. “How about you take a break from this? I’ll do the telling around here and you can go change into your costume.”
“It’s too early for that and knowing you, you’ll either get extremely angry or be too chill about things.” Jelly walked away from her brother who then ran after her, walking alongside her. “Ugh! That table is not in the right place!”
Cosmos stopped walking and turned to the table, waving a hand before the table moved with his movements into what he could assume was the correct place. He then followed his sister once again, watching as she walked by some ladders that had been set up right next to one of the walls.
“Maggie! Billy! How are you two doing?” Jelly looked up at the pair who then glanced down at her with smiles.
“Perfectly fine. We are just about done with this wall.” Billy spoke as he and Maggie fixed some curtains.
“I would say your grandparents have such a huge ballroom, but it’s not the first time I’ve had to deal with this.” Maggie chuckled before climbing down the ladder, Billy soon joining after so that they now stood in front of Jelly and Cosmos. “I thought both of you would have been wearing your costumes by now.”
“Well Jelly here is too-” Cosmos started before his sister placed a hand over his mouth.
“I’m just making sure everything is in place! Like I’ve said, this is-”
“Ula’s birthday party as she becomes an adult.” both Maggie and Billy finished for her before chuckling.
“Jells Bells. We’ve heard this so many times already. Just relax.”
“Relax is not in my dictionary today. It hasn’t been ever since August. My little oyster...my first baby, she’s going to be-no, no, no. She is 21 years old today.” Jelly rubbed her temples before plopping down onto a nearby chair. “She grew up too fast. One day she was a little doll and now...she’s breaking hearts and bones.”
“It happens to all of us.” Billy sympathetically patted her shoulder before a voice grabbed everybody’s attention, making them all turn to the side which was where the doors to the backyard were. Through the open ran in a figure with a cape flowing behind her.
“Mom! Mom look at me!” sounded Cordelia’s voice before she ran towards Jelly, immediately jumping onto her lap and presenting the costume she was already wearing. “I’m here to kick bad guy butt!”
“Oh Cordie, you look so adorable.” Jelly fixed Cordelia’s Batgirl mask before noticing that two others walked in as well and it was noticed that these were Davey and Schrader. “What are you all doing here?”
“We were helping Schrader with the pumpkins again.” Davey stated before taking a bite from a cupcake he had most likely gotten from the dessert table on his way to his relatives.
“Davey, is your uncle Pepper anywhere around?” Maggie asked as she eyed his cupcake, Davey shaking his head before Maggie grinned. “Then I’ll be right back!”
“Anyways, where are the pumpkins?” Jelly looked at Schrader who was behind Davey.
“The trucks are just outside Mrs. D’Vitt, I’m about to go unload them but just wanted to tell you before so it wouldn’t be a mess.” Schrader motioned to the window besides everybody where they caught sight of trucks filled with jack-o-lanterns. “Where do you want us to put them for now?”
“I say leave them just outside the door you came through and then everybody else can put them into place.” Jelly smiled at Schrader who nodded, then turning before feeling Jelly grab his wrist. “But you, go take a shower.”
“Shower? Do I smell bad?”
“Oh no, but you need to get ready for the party.”
“I’ll take a shower after I’m done with the pum-” Schrader began until he noticed Jelly’s stern look, making him give a small nod. “I’ll go take a shower and change right now.”
“Good, one of the bathrooms is on the right wing and the bedroom beside it is where I’ve put your costume.”Jelly waved at Schrader before he left, though she gave a frown as she spotted some of the servants doing something incorrectly. “Hey! What are you doing!?”
Jelly handed Cordelia over to a now confused Cosmos, both looking at each other before Cordelia giggled, everybody watching as Jelly yelled at a pair of men before Lennie appeared from the snack table. He rushed towards Jelly and carefully pulled her, more like dragged her, aside as he attempted to calm her down.
“So!” Cordelia exclaimed before her uncles and brother looked at her. “Who’s up for Chinese?”
_____________
“I am so proud of her.”
“Of who my love?”
“My Coralina, look at everything she has done. She really is just like me.” chuckled a woman before taking a sip from her wine glass, chocolate eyes admiring all the sights held in front of her and a plethora of several others that filled the large ballroom they were all in. “This is basically like the birthday party we threw for her when she was her daughter’s age. But of course not as good as that one.”
“Of course dear.” chuckled her husband, his eyes trailing on the figure belonging to their granddaughter who was hurrying around the entire place to make sure everything was in place. “There she goes again, just like you wanting to do everything.”
“What did you say? I didn’t hear that.”
“I said she’s just as beautiful as you.” Stripes took a sip from his own glass, this one not being filled with wine but instead a liquid that perfectly complemented his vampire costume. “When will the birthday girl be arriving?”
“I sent for her ride an hour ago, but they were supposed to take her to have a bit of fun. I imagine she will be here any minute now.” Carol glanced at the main entrance that lead into the ballroom, nobody special coming in yet. “Though I must say I am worried for Coral mostly, that poor girl is running around with her husband right behind. I wonder how he’s able to keep up with her.”
“Patience. And I would suppose he’s very much used to it.” Stripes watched as Lennie, dressed in a suit as his face was painted to resemble the doll from the Saw movies. “I understand him completely.”
“Hm?”
“I understand Jelly completely, how stressed and overworked she must be right now.”
“Oh yes. I agree.”
The pair gave a nod to each other with their usual sly smiles, then taking a sip from their glasses as they continued observing everything below them.
_____________
“Jelly-Bean, Jelly, please stop. Jelly-Bean you need to relax.”
“I have to make sure everything is perfect before Ula gets here. I have to make sure everybody is content, everybody is ready to greet her, and-”
“Jelly!” Lennie shouted before finally grabbing his wife’s wrist, pulling her back before she turned to him with wide eyes. “Jelly, please. Everything is so perfect, it’s the best thing ever Jelly. I swear, I would never lie to you about this, you’ve worked so hard and it’s all paid off.”
“But Lennie-”
Lennie lifted a finger which made Jelly close her lips, and he pulled her behind him all the way to a table before making her sit down.
“Now, Jelly, you stay here, okay? I’ll go get you a drink while you sit down and relax.” Lennie told Jelly before patting her hands, even walking backwards to make sure she really did stay on the chair. Once reaching the drinks table, Lennie turned around and saw his dad who was helping out.
“How’s your mate doing?” Cecilio chuckled before Lennie gave a sigh, still smiling however.
“Running around...she’s so stressed, but for no reason. Everything looks great and she even looks great in her costume.” Lennie looked at each of the drinks before pointing to one. “Can you serve me some lemonade? It’s for Jelly.”
“I can tell.” Cecilio motioned behind Lennie, so he turned and saw Jelly already behind him.
“Jelly…”
“Lennie.” she innocently grinned before accepting the lemonade from Cecilio, then giving a frown. “Wait a minute, why are you serving the drinks? I paid others to do that so you can have fun!”
“I’m alright here! I just wanted to help out.” Cecilio shrugged as he served a drink for a guest that came by. “I really don’t mind.”
“I’m sorry but I do. Others have this job, I am paying them for that! I prefer that you have some fun, hang out with the kids you know? Especially for when-” Jelly then stopped her speaking, her nose twitching at the new scent that made her look to the entrance before clasping her hands with a gasp and brightened expression as a new guest arrived.
Cecilio and Lennie turned as well, now spotting that new ‘guest’.
“She’s here!” Jelly excitedly exclaimed before her expression turned into one of terror. “She’s here!”
“Jelly, Jelly-Bean, relax.” Lennie chuckled as he took his wife’s hand, feeling as she had now began to tremble. He wasn’t exactly sure if it was the excitement or Jelly...just being Jelly.
“Lennie, we need to go with her right now!”
“Okay, okay.” he chuckled again as he followed his wife, though he was purposely pulling back just a bit so we wouldn’t rush and crash into somebody on the way towards their daughter who now had a spotlight on her as well as the one who walked beside her.
“Ooooh, she looks so beautiful!” Jelly exclaimed as she now picked up what she could of her dress, walking a little faster now until finally reaching the crowd that was closest and surrounding the pair that was Ula and Schrader.
There was clapping all around, grand smiles, some hoots here and there; everybody was excited and overjoyed to see Ula finally here for the party they all worked so hard on.
“Ula!” Jelly waved a hand before her daughter noticed, then being approached by her and Schrader. Ula gave her mother a tight hug before pulling away wit a bright grin.
“Mom! This...it all looks so wonderful!” Ula laughed as she looked around at everything done just for her. “Gosh, I can’t believe all this! I really, really feel like a princess!”
“But you’re not a princess.” Lennie claimed before being scooped up by Ula who gave him a tight hug as well.
“Oh, dad! I love you both so much!”
“We love you too Ula.” Lennie hugged her back before he was released. “And as I was saying, you’re not the princess tonight. You’re the queen.”
“”The prom queen.~” now added Schrader as he smiled at Ula’s parents. “Good evening Mrs. D’Vitt and Mr. Blueblood.”
“Hey there Schrader.”
“Or should we say, prom king? I see you even slicked your hair back for the occasion.~” Jelly chuckled before Schrader looked away with a blush coating his cheeks, but he smiled nonetheless. “You two better get ready for the coronation later, we’re just gonna have a bit of time to chat before we do that.”
“Sounds great.” Schrader nodded before turning back to Ula, offering his arm. “Shall we?”
Ula nodded and accepted Schrader’s arm before they walked away, still giving a way to the parents who watched with smiles.
“My little oyster…” Jelly sniffed before Lennie gave a sigh and nod, taking Jelly’s hand to give her a comforting squeeze.
“I know...I know…”
_____________
“Ugh...she looks so stupid.”
From a table far from where Ula stood, glared a pair of green eyes as their owner took a sip from a soda can. Right next to the person sat another with a pair of red eyes, these simply staring at the sight that was Ula now embracing her boyfriend before kissing his lips.
“Even Schrader looks stupid.”
The owner of the crimson eyes then glanced over at Schrader who also greeted Atlas, right before Ama came along and hugged her best friend.
“Just a tuxedo and a dress, yet they still have all the attention on them.”
“B-Bubbles?” a soft voice called out to the person talking, green and red eyes now turning to look at a pair of lilac ones. “Is everything o-okay?”
“Yeah, just here.” Bubbles gave a shrug before turning away from the scene in the distance. “Eating.”
“Oh...well, I-I brought you some cupcakes...chocolate ones. Th-that is if...you want them.”
“Oh hell yeah!” Bubbles exclaimed before swiping away the plate of cupcakes being handed to her. “Thanks Arabella!”
“You’re welcome.” the mime gave a small smile as her cheeks grew some blush, but her expression turned into one of regret once her eyes landed on the crimson ones that belonged to her sister.
Cantarella initially had her usual face, until it turned into a glare directed at her sister who got the message.
“I-I’ll get going now.” Arabella cleared her throat. “Might tell Ula...Happy Birthday.”
Bubbles made a weird face at the sound of that, then turning to look at Cantarella.
“So Ella, is that the costume that you’re gonna use on Halloween?”
At this, Arabella looked down before walking away from her sister and Bubbles, making her way towards the crowd of guests. She continued on her way until finally reaching Ula who was surrounded by her friends. The mime hesitated before actually approaching them, but she then reached a hand out to gently tap Ula’s shoulder.
Ula stopped talking and her friends followed, all turning to look at Arabella who felt herself turn red as all eyes were on her.
“Hey Arabella, having fun?” Ula smiled at Arabella before bringing her into a hug, thus surprising her.
“Oh, um, y-yeah. I think so.” Arabella gave a small nod before Ula pulled away from her.
“Oh! Wednesday Addams! What a great costume. Is your sister Pugsley perhaps?”
“No, sh-she’s a dark version of A-Alice...in Wonderland.”
“That’s nice.”
“Yeah...well, I wanted to s-say Happy Birthday.” Arabella tapped her fingers together before looking back at Ula who gave her a grin.
“Thank you, and thank you for coming. I’m glad you decided to.” Ula pat Arabella’s shoulder before the latter gave a nod. “Hope you continue having fun and that I see you around later.”
“Yes, of course.” Arabella nodded. “I’ll s-see you around.”
Before leaving, Arabella gave one glance to Schrader who made sure to stand next to Ula, giving the mime a serious look. With this, Arabella left the group.
A smile returned to Schrader’s expression as he turned to the group and Ula, ignoring...something.
“Hey guys.” Schrader called out to the group. “I’ll be right back, I have to do something.”
“Everything okay?”Atlas asked him, Schrader giving a nod.
“Yeah, just need to make...a call.” Schrader reassured everybody before looking at Ula specifically. “You-”
“I’d like to have everybody’s attention please.” interrupted the voice belonging to Jelly that sounded through the speakers as the music’s volume was now lowered.
Everybody turned to see as said woman stood on a balcony where she was accompanied by Lennie.
“Oooh, it’s time!~” somebody else exclaimed in a whisper, Ula and Schrader turning to see Cecilio standing behind yet between them before he turned to Schrader. “You’re not gonna get hit in the head, are ya?”
Schrader then have a bit of a laugh as he shook his head, whispering back.
“No, or at least I hope I don’t.” he then turned his attention back to Jelly. “I’m not going up there either way.”
“What? Why not?” Ula turned to him.
“I want to respect Atlas-”
“It’s fine.”
The pair turned to look at Atlas.
“Really, it’s fine. Besides, it goes with your costumes and it wouldn’t really make sense if only Ula went.” Atlas gave the two a smile.
“And now for the moment you’ve all been waiting for, the moment we crown our queen!~” Jelly continued speaking through her microphone.
“Atlas, I’d feel more comfortable if you went.”
“By one vote, our winners are…”
“Schrader, it wouldn’t make sense. It’s seriously okay.”
“Guys, what if both of you-”
Before anybody else could speak, they all squint their eyes as a spotlight was shone on them, specifically Ula of course. Now all eyes were on the trio who felt a sense of awkwardness.
“Lily D’Vitt!”
As triumphant music started to play, everybody began to clap as Ula gave a nervous smile and waved at everybody as she began walking, Schrader having been shoved to follow behind her.
The crowd parted to make a path for the pair who gave a few glances at Atlas, but they soon stopped once they reached the stage area where Jelly and Lennie now where.
Ula eagerly grinned as she stood in the center of the stage, leaning down to hug Lennie after he handed her a flower bouquet. Soon Ula embraced her mother who had placed a crown on her head.
Everybody continued to clap and cheer for Ula as she continued smiling widely, that was until what happened next.
Everybody ceased to clap and cheer for Ula as she ceased smiling widely, for there was a splash of crimson on her which instead made everybody gasp.
Schrader’s eyes widened as Ula was now drenched in what looked like blood, some of his suit and face having gotten splashed on as well.
“What the hell…?” he whispered as he looked at himself and then Ula, noticing her face of shock as she dropped her flower bouquet onto a puddle of red. “Ula-”
From below the stage Atlas watched in shock as well, his eyes traveling up to where he could see drops still fall down onto Ula. That’s when he noticed the bucket that was attached to a rope, the rope being attached to the ceiling, this piece attached, or more like held, by two hands. Their owner was hidden in the shadows of the upper part of the room, and Atlas saw as the hands released the rope.
“No!” Atlas exclaimed before dashing away to a spot where he would not be seen, immediately teleporting to the area where the rope was and he thankfully caught it before it was able to fall down. He looked down at the stage, hearing as Ula gave a laugh.
She had started to clap her hands, a big grin on her expression.
Everybody looked at each other confused for a moment, but they soon started clapping as well before Atlas gave a sigh of relief.
He made sure to pull the rope and was able to grab the bucket before turning around, eyes squinted as he realized that the culprit was nowhere around. Atlas then looked down where Ula was noticing as she and Schrader approached Lennie and Jelly; Schrader appearing to have excused himself before leaving to most likely make the call he had mentioned earlier.
_____________
Now back on the ground, Atlas looked around the ballroom until spotting Ula who had been wandering around to greet the other guests who had just arrived or had not seen earlier.
He made his way through everybody, never realizing the pair of eyes that followed his figure the entire way as he now reached Ula.
“Atlas!” Ula called him before grabbing his hands.
“Hey there.” he smiled down at her. “What are you up to right now?”
“Just saying hello to everybody and telling them that the food is going to be served soon.” Ula motioned to a door that Atlas looked at, workers coming out with trays and carts of food. “So, you should go and sit down to get yours.”
“Oh nice. Where-”
“At the table with our friends.” Ula pointed to a table close to the stage, right beside the one wit Ula’s parents and siblings. “I made sure to make Dante sit away from you so you don’t have to feel uncomfortable.”
“Oh, thanks.” Atlas cleared his throat before he felt a tap on his back, prompting him to partially let go of Ula to turn around and look behind him, as did Ula.
“Basil, hi!” she exclaimed as Atlas stared at the boy who was accompanied by his sister. “I almost thought you guys weren’t coming! With your parents’ anniversary and all.”
“We would never miss your birthday party, Ula!” Flora presented herself and Basil who nodded. “And we’re also in costume! We figure you’d like these.”
“Michael Myers and Laurie Strode! I love them!” Ula laughed before hugging each of the siblings, then noticing as Flora gave a frown.
“Yeah, I had another costume but Basil asked me to wear this one.” she claimed before tugging at her brother’s jumpsuit. “He told me that-”
Basil then clasped a hand over his sister’s mouth before ushering her away towards the crowd. He then brought his hands up and began signing as Atlas and Ula watched him.
“What did he say?” Atlas leaned in towards Ula who’s smile widened.
“He’s asking you if it’s okay to steal me away for a dance.” Ula turned to Atlas who looked back at Basil, the boy giving a slight nod.
“Um, sure. If that’s what Ula wants.” Atlas nodded before seeing Ula step towards Basil who took her hand. “I’m gonna go and sit down with the others.”
“Okay, I’ll see you in a bit.” Ula gave a nod before Atlas made his way through the remaining standing guests. He eventually came across the table Ula showed him and he sat next to the goth cheerleader that was Ama who watched Ula and Basil on the dancefloor.
“How come you’re not dancing with her?” Ama chuckled before Atlas gave a shrug.
“Basil asked to dance with her and it’s not like I’m going to restrict Ula from doing things.”
“Hm.” Ama gave a pleased nod before turning to Atlas. “This is gonna be one long night.”
“What makes you say that?”
“Well, I heard somebody say some...things about Ula...not very nice ones...but also because you know, party ends at midnight and all.”
“Yeah, speaking of that...um, I think I might...leave a little earlier.”
“What? Why?” Ama blinked in surprise as she now sat up straight after having been resting on the chair she sat on.
“It’s just…” Atlas shrugged before shaking his head. “It doesn’t matter.”
“This is your girlfriend and best friend’s birthday party that everybody worked so hard on Atlas. Of course it matters.”
“Ama,” Atlas turned to his friend who gave him a look. “I just don’t think I really...everybody kind of hates me after what happened-”
“Oh would you shut up with that already?” Ama groaned before rolling her eyes “Seriously, you and Schrader are one and the same. You both still think that you’re hated by everybody when clearly you’re here and everybody literally welcomes you.”
“Well-”
“But hey, go ahead and leave your girlfriend here.”
“Ama-”
“I’m not judging. Just do whatever you want.” Ama gave a shrug before turning to look at the table as their food was now being placed in front of them. “She was hoping to spend a lot of time with you today.”
“Look, you guys will be here...Schrader will be here to keep her company.” Atlas turned to Ama who now began feasting. “And besides, I just don’t want there to be any drama.”
“Drama?”
“Yeah, with like, you know.” Atlas’ eyes darted to where Dante and the twins sat. “And I’m pretty sure that there’s others such as Carney. I don’t want to ruin Ula’s big day.”
“I suppose you’ll do the same on your wedding day too, huh?”
“What?” Atlas turned to Ama in shock and flustered features.
“You’re gonna be all, I’m gonna leave early because I wouldn’t want to cause any drama on our big day. But don’t worry, Schrader will be there to comfort her.” Ama mimicked Atlas’ voice in a silly way. “Sometimes I don’t get you guys.”
“Hey guys.” the two heard from behind, turning to see as Schrader now approached the table before sitting down next to one o the twins. “Look who I bumped into on the way.”
“Hi Henry.” Atlas nodded as said person sat in between Ama and Schrader.
“Hi.” Henry gave a bit of an awkward wave. “How are you all doing?”
“Just, dandy.” Atlas peered at Ama for a moment who casually drank her soda, pretending that she didn’t notice his stare. “Anyways, everything okay with that phone call, Schrader?”
“Hm?” Schrader turned to him before quickly nodding. “Oh, oh yes of course.”
“Where’s Ula?” Henry then asked the entire table, right before feeling hands on his shoulders as somebody whispered right in his ear.
“Right here.~”
Henry jumped in his seat before turning as he heard some quiet laughs, his cheeks burning red as he spotter Ula, this making him jump again upon noticing her appearance.
“T-that’s not-”
“It is blood.” Ula wiped one of her arms with a finger. “It’s the blood of the last guy who bothered Ama.~”
“No it’s not.” Ama playfully rolled her eyes before Ula facepalmed, then ignoring it.
“Yeah, I’m just kidding Henry. I’m glad you actually came.” Ula smiled at Henry who gave a bit of a nod and smile.
“Thank you for inviting me.” he replied before Ula air-pat his shoulder to not ruin his outfit with the blood on her, though the one on her hands had been wiped onto somebody named Basil.
“You know it’s no problem, you’re a friend.” Ula grinned at Henry. “But anyways, I’m going to have to leave you guys because I need to go eat and then check up on the other tables. If I don’t, my mom’s gonna do it and she might make a fuss if she sees even a fork missing.”
“See you around.” Ama waved at her friend before turning to Henry who was still blushing, especially with her gaze right on him. “So Henry, what have you been working on?”
“Oh, you know,” Henry gave a small shrug before nervously coughing. “The...usual stuff.”
“You ever need a hand with that stuff, you know I’m glad to help.” Schraer added into the conversation before Henry nodded, especially since this wasn’t the first time Schrader had offered some help.
“Thank you. Have you been up to anything lately?”
“Me? I had been building this one thing for a while, though I wouldn’t necessarily call it building.” Schrader gave a bit of a shrug. “It’s something for Ula.”
“For Ula?” Atlas turned to Schrader. “May I ask...what it is?”
“I’d rather keep it secret for now, especially since I’ll be showing it to her after this.” Schrader gave a bit of a smile. “You’ll see it soon though.”
“Oooh! Is it the c-” a voice exclaimed before Schrader immediately turned and brought a finger up to his lips, everybody spotting Cordelia who now stood next to Schrader’s chair. “Oh! Right!”
Everybody soon greeted Cordie who invited herself onto Schrader’s lap, casually sitting there before turning to Atlas.
“You’re gonna dance with my big sister, right?”
“Oh, yeah, of course. Just later when we’re done eating.” Atlas slightly nodded before Cordelia turned to Schrader.
“You too, right?”
“Actually, I was hoping I’d be able to dance with you after we were all done eating.” Schrader smiled at Cordelia who’s face beamed with a gasp.
“Yes!” she cheered, then hopping off Schrader to run back to her family which made him chuckle.
“You’re gonna have Ula all to yourself tonight if Cordie steals everybody away.” Schrader joked to Atlas who then made a bit of a face, Schrader catching this. “Something wrong?”
“I...I’m not gonna stay the entire night…”
At this, Schrader made a weird face as he and Henry stared at Atlas in confusion.
“Something wrong at home?”
“No, it’s just-”
“Atlas has to visit his grandparents, that’s all.” Ama interrupted. “He promised he’d bring them some cake and treats from here.”
“Right…”Atlas slowly nodded.
“Oh, I see.” Schrader nodded as well. “Then, I don’t suppose you wouldn’t mind if I stole Ula away after the party? It’s just so I can show her the gift I worked on for her, I couldn’t exactly bring it.”
“Of course I don’t mind.” Atlas softly shook his head. “I’m not going to do very much, and I imagine she’d go and rest after a long night.”
“Yeah, I suppose.”
_____________
After a few hours of partying, Ula was once again on the dancefloor, and once again was she with Basil.
“You know, I have a feeling this isn’t the first time you’ve worn that costume.” Ula giggled to herself as she admired the boy’s costume once again.
Basil responded by giving a nod that made Ula chuckle.
“I mean, I don’t blame you. Michael Myers is a really, awesome guy.” Ula’s cheeks now had a tinge of bush on them as she bit her lip before whispering. “And very dreamy.”
Basil once again nodded, then glancing up as a new song played, this one slower than the last. He looked back at Ula who gave a nod and they repositioned themselves, Basil still leaving a hand out to sign to Ula.
“Will you dance with Schrader?”
“Maybe later, he’s dancing with Cordelia right now.” Ula motioned to the side where Basil saw Cordelia being carried by Schrader who slow danced with her.
“And Atlas?”
“He’s...talking to Ama and Henry, I think. Oh, they two are actually dancing…” Ula looked around, not being able to find Atlas. “But, let’s just dance for now, yeah?”
Basil gave a nod before holding Ula closer, his nails slightly digging into her back but not enough to harm her. If anything, it was more of a secure hold.
“Basil?” Ula called out to him as she sensed that something was off about him.. “Are you okay?”
As always, Basil nodded before Ula held his cheek.
“Are you sure?” she asked before Basil stopped dancing as Ula followed, and it took him a while before he eventually nodded again and held Ula as he did earlier.
Though Ula was still not convinced, she positioned herself as well before they continued to slow dance until the song ended. Right then, Basil pulled Ula into a hug before putting his head on her shoulder, holding her tightly.
Ula was confused, but nonetheless, she hugged him right back before petting the back of his head and then his back. Something was off about him and she couldn’t tell what, so she decided it would be best to stay that way until Basil felt the need to pull away. And that came a while after, and it was a long while.
“Basil, you know you can talk to me if you need anything, okay?” Ula whispered to the boy as she held both of his hands, Basil shutting his eyes for a moment before responding like before. “You’re my friend, I care about you.”
“Thank you.” Basil signed after having taken his hands away. “Excuse me I have to check on Flora.”
“Oh, okay then.” Ula then watched as Basil walked away through the crowd of guests, and she turned around before coming face to face with Atlas. “Oh! There you are.”
“Here I am.” Atlas replied before feeling as Ula took his hands in his.
“Can I have another dance with you?” she asked with a grin, Atlas giving a small nod before he and Ula got into position for the current slow song.
“Ula, I uh...look, I don’t want you to take this personally.”
“Is something wrong?” Ula gave Atlas a look of concern before he shook his head.
“No, no. Everything’s fine, I swear.” he reassured her before releasing a sigh. “I just...I’m gonna have to go in a bit.”
“Go? Like, you’re leaving?”
“Yeah, I just wanted to tell you first.”
“But...why?”
“It’s some stuff with...my grandfather.” Atlas mentally hit himself for the lie, already knowing that the truth would have further hurt Ula.
“Oh...I understand.” Ula nodded before sadly looking down. “I-”
“Ula!” somebody shouted, Ula and Atlas turning to the side to then see that it was Jelly. “Ula! It’s time to cut the cake!~”
“Is it-”
“Of course! Now come on, come on! Go onto the stage and I’ll be there in a bit.” Jelly hurried her daughter, staying in place before looking up at Atlas. “Atlas.”
“Yes, Jelly?”
“Just so you know, I don’t hate you. I don’t dislike you either, I like you a lot.” Jelly smiled before leaning in closer. “But what did you do this time to upset Ula?”
“I-I-”
“I sensed it from all the way in the front yard. So tell me.”
“I just s-said I had to l-leave early.” Atlas nervously stuttered out as Jelly blinked with her same smile.
“Ah, I see. Well then, sorry about that.” Jelly pat his arm. “Well, make sure you stay in time to get a slice of cake, ‘especially’ for your grandparents.”
“Yes, of course.” Atlas nodded before following after Jelly who soon climbed onto the stage area, now standing next to Lennie again as Atlas was on the ground below.
“May I have everybody’s attention please?” Jelly spoke into her microphone, the music now stopping as everybody turned to her. “I believe that it is now time to sing Happy Birthday to the birthday girl.~”
Everybody’s attention was now on Ula who stood in the center of the stage, her siblings and parents standing beside her. All eyes watched as from one side of the stage, two workers rolled in a table with a large cake that made Ula’s eyes widen and her jaw drop. The pumpkin at the very top was then lit up, right before everybody began to sing to Ula who felt her eyes swell with tears. Once done, Ula leaned in to blow the candle out before everybody clapped and Ula embraced her family, then being released as she was handed a large kitchen knife to cut the cake.
Soon enough, cake slices were distributed to all the tables after guests sat down again, the only one who was still standing being Atlas. He stood near the stage, now with a box in his hands.
“Hey, here’s your slice.” Ula approached him before offering two plates of cake. “And here’s for your grandfather. I wasn’t sure if you wanted to bring him anything else, or your parents.”
“I’ll grab some things on the way out, don’t worry about it.” Atlas sighed again as he managed to take both plates in one hand, using his other to hand over the gift box he held. “I wanted to personally give this to you before I left.”
“Oh, you didn’t have to.” Ula smiled before gratefully taking the box as she noticed that the colors were similar to those of Alice. “Do you want me to open it right now?”
“Yeah, well, if you want to.”
“I’ll open it.” Ula untied the ribbon that she placed onto the stage beside her, then opening the box to squint her eyes to figure out what the papers inside were. “Is it-”
“Canis Major owns a rough draft of Alice in Wonderland and it has Lewis Carrol’s notes and such in it.” Atlas explained before flipping over one of the pages. “I unfortunately couldn’t get it for you, but I was allowed to make photo copies of it for you.”
Ula’s eyes scanned the papers for a while as she read what she could of them, then setting the box down and taking away the cakes from Atlas’ hands to place them beside the box.
Atlas was confused for a moment, right until he felt as Ula grabbed his shoulders and quickly pulled him down into a kiss. It surprised him for a bit but he then melted into the kiss, shaky hands reaching out to grab Ula’s waist as they remained that way for a few moments. Soon after, they pulled away before Ula kissed Atlas’ nose with a giggle.
“Thank you, I love it.” she whispered before nuzzling her nose against his. “And I love you.”
“I love you too.” Atlas breathed out before the two completely pulled away, Atlas grabbing the plates and Ula her gift. “Well, I’m gonna go say goodbye to everybody and...make my way out.”
“Okay. Thank you for coming. Stay safe.” Ula called after Atlas once he walked away after having given her one last hug. “Call me when you get home.”
“I will.” Atlas chuckled to himself, waving to Ula before he was eventually out of sight.
_____________
As the night and party was now coming to a close, Ula sat alone at one of the tables as guests had made their way out of the party if they hadn’t already.
Her eyes scanned the room until landing on the dancefloor where she found her parents slow dancing with her siblings. Sister dancing with dad. Brother dancing with mom. They all looked so happy...she was too but ...there was always that piece...missing.
“Hello, my darling.”
Ula looked up as a man now stood in front of her, and she slightly smiled.
“Hi Jamie.” she then saw as the man held his hand out to her whilst giving a slight bow.
“Will the birthday girl do me the honor of giving me this last dance?” James asked before Ula nodded, taking his hand and letting James lead her to the dancefloor. “How have you been enjoying yourself, darling?”
“This whole day and night was wonderful.” Ula answered. “I’m so grateful for everything everybody did, so thank you James.”
“You know I would do anything for you.” James gently squeezed Ula’s hand. “Ula, you...you have grown into such a beautiful, little lady.”
“Thank you.”
“I just...I wanted to say that even though we had a very, horrible beginning...that I have enjoyed your company and am thankful for all that you have done or me. Event though I...I, I h-”
“James, that wasn’t you.” Ula shook her head before James gave a bit of a chuckle.
“What I am trying to say Ula, is that even though we are not family...I am so, very proud of you. You gave me a chance to better myself when not many others would, and I...I do not know how else to thank you for such acts of kindness.” James looked at Ula who bit her lip in order to prevent herself from showing too much emotion that she would have liked. “Anybody is fortunate to have you in their life Ula, I know I am. And as I mentioned before, you have grown into such a lady that I have grown to be very proud of.”
“Oh, James.” Ula let go of his hand to wipe her eyes. “Stop, you’re gonna make me cry.”
“I only tell the truth.” James chuckled before using a handkerchief to softly wipe Ula’s eyes. “You deserve all the good in the world. You are such a strong and courageous one and you stand back up no matter how many times you fall. You are such an admirable lady Ula.”
“James…”
“I just need you to know these things, just in case you ever forget darling. I am so glad that I was given another chance at life, and especially to share it with you as you grow and continue to bloom into the wondrous flower that you are.” James smiled at Ula who accepted the handkerchief he offered to wipe her eyes again. “I know that the night had come to an end, but I wish you a Happy Birthday.”
Ula then pulled herself away from James to wipe her eyes that continued to pour out tears, right before she felt him pull her into a hug that she instantly returned. The girl buried her face into him until they eventually pulled away, James wiping her eyes once again.
“Thank you f...James.” Ula wiped her eyes one last time. “That...that was very sweet ...I'm so glad...I...I don’t even know what to say….”
“That is alright.” James tucked a strand of Ula’s hair behind her ear. “You do not need to say anything.”
Ula nodded before she and James turned to the side, seeing as Schrader approached them.
“I’m not, interrupting anything, am I?”
“No, we are just about done.” James turned to Ula who nodded in agreement. “I was saying my wishes to Ula is all, then I will help with the cleaning around here.”
“As long as my mom’s here, you won’t be able to do that.” Ula giggled before James gave a shrug, then giving Ula one more hug before kissing her cheek.
“Happy Birthday, my darling.”
“Thank you.” Ula waved to James who then made his way out, so Ula turned to Schrader who gave her a smile. “I’m surprised you haven’t left yet.”
“I have to stay and protect the queen.” Schrader chuckled as he and Ula smiled at each other. “Hey, what do you plan on doing once you leave?”
“Well, I’m going to go home, take a bath, and probably sleep for twenty-seven years if I don’t watch Halloween and swoon over Myers.” Ula joked with a shrug. “A clown’s gotta sleep.”
“Before you go into your deep slumber, would it be alright if you came with me...somewhere?”
“Somewhere? What are you doing to do, kidnap me?” Ula laughed before Schrader playfully rolled his eyes.
“I just need to show you something is all.” he then motioned to her parents. “Your parents said it was alright, especially because they don’t want you cleaning around here.”
“Say that to my mom.” Ula stuck her tongue out. “But uh, where do you plan on taking me, Mr. Sage?”
“That would be a surprise, Ms. D’Vitt.” Schrader grinned.
“Oooh, a surprise. That’s new.”
“And if you want, we could also go check up on Atlas.” Schrader suggested before Ula smiled and nodded.
“I like the sound of that.”
