A few years ago, I noticed that a number of factories in China had started opening TikTok accounts and posting footage from their assembly lines. The videos offered a rare glimpse into global supply chains, and millions of Western TikTok users marveled at teddy bears being stuffed with polyester fiberfill, machines dipping gardening gloves into hot liquified nitrile rubber, and quality assurance testers seeing whether cheap cigarette lighters worked. (My friend and former colleague Andrew Deck wrote a great story about factory TikTok for Rest of World in 2021.)

Since then, hundreds of other Chinese factories have joined TikTok. Some of them produce industrial equipment that would never be bought by normal people, like dump trucks or bottle labeling machines. And while the older factory accounts were often created by marketing agencies, these newer ones seem to largely be the work of earnest salespeople trying to find new customers. Many of them are relying on AI translation and text-to-speech tools, making the videos unintentionally sound very funny.

One of these manufacturers is a company called Donghua Jinlong, which is headquartered in Hebei province about 200 miles from Beijing. It sells “high quality industrial grade glycine,” a type of nutritional additive that evidently sounds silly and abstract to people who never need to think about how processed food is made. Donghua Jinglong and its glycine have become a relatively big meme on TikTok, Instagram, and X over the last few days, and some of the company’s videos are getting over 100,000 views (even though its official account only has roughly 4,400 followers).

Donghua Jinlong itself, however, doesn’t seem to have any idea what’s going on. People in the comments keep begging it to make official merch, but the company doesn’t understand why anyone would want a sweatshirt or t-shirt with the name of an industrial manufacturer on it. Shitposters have also started referencing the Donghua Jinlong meme in the comments of videos from other Chinese factories.

A company called HengYuan, for example, posted a video of what can only be described as a machine for filling Tide Pods, and one of the top comments is someone asking “Could you pack food grade glycine in this?”

Clearly baffled, HengYuan responded, “No. This is used to pack detergent in PVA Film.”

The Donghua Jinlong meme is a great microcosm of what’s actually happening on TikTok when it comes to content from China. Some people might argue that Chinese manufacturers are choosing to post on the app because its parent company, ByteDance, is also from China. In other words, these factories could be held up as an example of TikTok allowing Chinese influence to grow in the US (albeit a bizarre one).

But Donghua Jinlong also has a Facebook page with even more followers, it’s just that no one is engaging with its posts there. That’s because there are likely very few people searching social media for a new glycine supplier at any given time. TikTok, however, doesn’t rely on users to actively seek out content, it serves videos to them via an algorithm. So now tons of random people are coming across glycine manufacturers and Tide Pod machines by accident, and they’re happily turning the whole thing into a joke.

I personally find these videos to be fascinating, both because It’s cool to learn how things are made, and because they provide the opportunity to watch in real time what happens when random Chinese companies come into contact with American social media users. I don’t think this is the type of Chinese influence lawmakers are imagining when they worry about TikTok, but it’s arguably much more interesting and human.

Hyacinthus Iceberg Meme EXPLAIN (P3)

It's time for me to answer your questions about this Hyacinthus iceberg meme. There is a lot to tackle, so I'll divide it into 5 parts for the sake of my sanity.

Quick disclaimer: I am NOT an expert in Greek mythology, just a fan of Hyacinthus who wants to learn about him and anyone related to him. Most of the things I'm about to discuss are just theories and speculations of a passerby on the Internet, so do not take them as valid facts!

Daphne is Hyacinthus' sister

There is only one poet who wrote about Daphne being Hyacinthus' sister. Well, it's not explicitly stated but he claimed Daphne was a daughter of King Amyclas and lived in Laconia, so it's not hard to piece it all together.

"This is how the story of Daphne, the daughter of Amyklas (Amyclas), is related. [...] But she got together a large pack of hounds and used to hunt either in Lakonia (Laconia) or sometimes going into the further mountains of the Peloponnese." - Parthenius, "Love Romances"

I have a joke headcanon that Apollo loves Hyacinthus because he looks like Daphne (Hya's sister) and Hyacinthus loves Apollo because he looks like Thamyris (Apollo's grandson).

Some K-drama angsty level of romance, eh?

The accurate hyacinth flower???

This has been a debate for quite a while now. Is the flower born from Hyacinthus' death the modern hyacinth or a different flower?

Even though most of us settle for the widely-known purple hyacinth (the flowers above), many argue that the flower can also be a larkspur, an iris, or a martagon lily.

I admit I prefer Hyacinthus' flower being the purple hyacinth or at least a similar ancestor. It's because Athena used to give Odysseus a curly hairstyle like the hyacinths, and that description is similar to the modern flower.

[...] Athena poured beauty on [Odysseus]— her abundance made him taller and more robust to look at. Then, on his head, she transformed his hair, so it flowed in curls like fresh hyacinths in bloom. - Homer, "The Odyssey"

Here is a detail that got me pondering.

In the "Abduction of Persephone" myth, when Persephone is returned to Demeter, she tells her mother about the abduction and we have this:

"[...] we were playing and gathering sweet flowers in our hands, soft crocuses mingled with irises and hyacinths, and rose-blooms and lilies, marvelous to see, and the narcissus which the wide earth caused to grow yellow as a crocus." - Homeric Hymn 2 to Demeter

So Persephone is collecting flowers when she is taken, and one of those flowers is the hyacinth. It's unexpected to think Apollo and Hyacinthus got together before the seasons were a thing.

Zephyrus wears hyacinths on his flower wreath

There is one account I can find that talks about this detail.

"You can see [Zephyrus], I think, with his winged temples and his delicate form; and he wears a crown of all kinds of flowers, and will soon weave the hyacinth in among them." - Philostratus the Elder, "Imagines"

It might be a simple thing, but it had me thinking. Does Zephyrus wear hyacinths in his flower crown as a reminder of his former lover (like Apollo wears laurels from Daphne's tree)? Is it out of the guilt he has later or a sadistic triumph?

We'll never know.

Chloris creates the hyacinth flowers

For those who don't know, Chloris is the goddess of flowers and the wife of Zephyrus.

We all agree that Apollo created the hyacinth flower in the memories of Hyacinthus, but Ovid claimed Chloris (or Flora, her Roman counterpart) to be the creator.

"I (Flora) first made a flower from Therapnean blood [Hyacinthus the larkspur flower], and its petal still inscribes the lament. You too, narcissus, have a name in tended gardens, unhappy in your undivided self. Why mention Crocus, Attis, or Cinyras' son, from whose wounds I made a tribute soar?" - Ovid, "Fasti"

I don't like this version not because it's a Roman source, but because having Flora/Chloris creating the flower will reduce the heart-wrenching of Apollo and Hyacinthus' myth. Apollo lost his beloved to the hands of death, so having him make the flower as a tribute to their love and to always remember him will have a bigger impact.

Apollo is Hyacinthus' uncle/granduncle/great-grandfather

Look, almost all Greek mythology couples are related in some way. Apollo and Hyacinthus are no exception.

If we have Amyclas and Diomede as Hyacinthus' parents, Apollo will be Hyacinthus' granduncle on his father's side and great-grandfather on his mother's side.

Lacedaemon (Hyacinthus' grandfather) is a son of Zeus and Taygete.

"[Eurotas] left the kingdom to Lacedaemon, whose mother was Taygete, after whom the mountain was named, while according to report his father was none other than Zeus." - Pausanias, "Description of Greece"

Lapithes is a son of Apollo and the father of Diomede.

"Lapithes, the son of Apollon and Stilbe, the daughter of Peneus." - Diodorus Siculus, "Library of History"

"Amyclas and Lapithes' daughter Diomede had Cynortas and Hyacinthus." - Pseudo-Apollodorus, "Bibliotheca"

If we have Clio as Hyacinthus' mother, Apollo will be his half-uncle because the Muses are the daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne, the Titan goddess of memory.

I guess the only way to remove incest from Apollo and Hyacinthus is to have Clio as his mother but use the version where the Muses sprang into life from four fivers made by Pegasus.

Hyacinthus is the relative/ancestor of other heroes (Perseus, Heracles, Helen, etc.)

I used to make a family tree for ten generations of the mythical Spartan family (and an additional one for Perseus and Danae).

And since Perseus is the great-grandfather of Heracles, this means Hyacinthus is an ancestor of Heracles as well.

Here are some sources to back me up:

"[...] Lelex, an aboriginal was the first king in this land, after whom his subjects were named Leleges. Lelex had a son Myles, and a younger one Polycaon. [...] On the death of Myles his son Eurotas succeeded to the throne.." - Pausanias, "Description of Greece"

"On the death of Amyclas, the empire came to Argalus, the eldest of his sons, and afterward, when Argalus died, to Cynortas. Cynortas had a son Oebalus." - Pausanias, "Description of Greece"

"[Oebalus] took a wife from Argos, Gorgophone the daughter of Perseus, and begat a son Tyndareus, with whom Hippocoon disputed about the kingship, claiming the throne on the ground of being the eldest. With the end of Icarius and his partisans, he had surpassed Tyndareus in power, and forced him to retire in fear." - Pausanias, "Description of Greece"

"To Acrisius and Eurydice, Lacedaemon's daughter, was born a daughter Danae [...] When Acrisius later learned that she had given birth to Perseus, not believing that Zeus seduced her, he cast his daughter out to sea with her son on an ark." - Pseudo-Apollodorus, "Bibliotheca"

Apollo and Hyacinthus in the Trojan War???

Oh boy. This is the part many of you are screaming for me to explain.

I'll have to disappoint you because there aren't many texts about Apollo/Hyacinthus in the Epic Cycle (at least, I can't find all of them yet). But if we bust our brains, we can draw out some shower thoughts.

Was Hyacinthus alive by the time of the Trojan War, and did he participate?

The timeline is shaky and depends on which source you're looking at. Euripides' play "Helen" mentions the Hyacinthia festival, meaning our prince was born, died, and immortalized before the Trojan War.

"They will be gathered in a dance, at long last, or in games, or in all night feasts, in honor of Hyacinth, whom Phoebus Apollo killed during a discus throwing contest." - Euripides, "Helen"

On the other hand, Lucian's "Dialogues of the Dead" said that Hyacinthus was still in the Underworld after the Trojan War.

"Menippos: Where are all the beauties, Hermes? Show me around, I am a newcomer. Hermes : I am busy, Menippos. But look over there, to your right, and you will see Hyacinthus, Narcissus, Nireus, Achilles, Tyro, Helene, Leda - all the beauties of old." - Lucian, "Dialogues of the Dead"

From Lucian's work, either Hyacinthus will be resurrected much later after the war or never at all.

If we go by the version that Hyacinthus was deified before the war, I'm sure he will side with his homeland. Hyacinthus is a favorite hero-god of Sparta and great-granduncle to Helen, so there is no reason he won't participate in the war.

That leads us to the next point:

2) Can you imagine the angst potential for Hyapollo???

National pride is a big thing for Spartans. You know how Spartans mock other city-states and uphold their people. Hyacinthus must feel utterly betrayed when Apollo is revealed to be siding with the people who stole from his homeland. He loves the god, but he loves his homeland more.

However, unlike the previous point where there are sources to draw from, we got zero records of how Apollo and Hyacinthus interacted during the war. So it has to be up to our imagination.

When Apollo sent a plague on the Greeks, did he purposefully spare the Spartans because of Hyacinthus? Did Hyacinthus tell his men to not kill the children, lovers, or favored mortals of Apollo?

Did they avoid each other when the Olympian civil conflict broke out? Did they even talk to each other at all?

And most importantly, how would they heal after the Trojan War?

3) Do the Spartans celebrate the Hyacinthia in Troy?

Now, this one is funny. The Spartans worshipped Apollo and Hyacinthus together, yet Apollo is now the enemy of Sparta.

In history, Spartans did form truces and leave the battlefields to attend the Hyacinthia festival.

"Now the Lakedaimonians (Lacedaemonians), as the festival of Hyakinthos was approaching, made a truce of forty days with the men of Eira [in Messenia]. They themselves returned home to keep the feast." - Pausanias, "Description of Greece"

But this isn't the case in the Trojan War. No sources say the Spartans desert the battlefield in Troy to go home for the festival (makes sense because they have to travel across the sea, and their queen is still trapped in Troy)

So the question is: how do they celebrate them in Troy instead? Do they even celebrate the Hyacinthia when one of the honored gods is siding against them?

Just flew on a plane for the first time in a few months and forgot how much I love them and I took notes about her the whole time, waxing poetic about how beautiful and graceful she is

Magical draconic runway in the shape of a big rune that eases in traveling dragons while also serving as a landing strip

The rumble as we take off, that ROAR of hers. She's so beautiful and powerful. The speed that pushes you back in your seat and pops your ears and shakes you around and then the DIP as you take off and that feeling of disorientation but she's fine. She loves it. And in SECONDS, the ground is like toys, like ants beneath us. It took less time than writing this for cars to be the size of bugs. The world is so small to her. She's so beautiful and strong and carries us aloft with such grace. I love you plane

Oh those little struts I mentioned move as we do!! They help guide her just a little bit! Probably help with banking and shit

Cartography wizards (cartogramancers? Lol) astride enormous dragons who keep note of all the changes in the landscape below. Listing every road, every footpath, every river, scribing it into an endlessly long magical atlas. Noting how the roads below form glyphs and runes, how they mirror the natural magic of rivers and tributaries, how homes and castles are built in the most defensible - or beautiful - positions and seeing vistas groundbound humans could never dream of seeing. The beauty of it all.

Fantasy alternate history ww1 where biplanes are replaced with steampunky dragons

This is getting away from airplanes and more toward dragons, I love the plane I think that a machine with the sole purpose of holding people tight and carrying them to far away places to see loved ones and new experiences is so beautiful, it's such a FASCINATING marvel of engineering prowess. This thing is BUILT on math and that's so cool. Every inch of her frame, every cubic centimeter of metal and plastic and cloth, are all accounted for in every flight equation. It's amazing. She's amazing.

I could *feel* her start to dip. That's another amazing thing - every single thing she does is NOTICEABLE. Every dip, every shudder, every increase or decrease in speed. My heart is pumping in time to her turbines, the electricity that runs through her veins is nearly palpable as we prepare for our descent

I'm polyamorous the way a plane is, compared to private jets and shit - they want to please everyone, they just want everyone to be happy and loved and safe, they want to deliver them with speed and safety and warmth and just. I love u miss plane

When my dog first came home with us, only a couple weeks old, he'd sit in the yard and look up at the sky as planes went by and made noise and he had a sense of total awe. I wonder how many dogs are looking up at me now while I look back down at the ground with equal splendor

Very funny to still see those pizza huts with the red rooves

The lights come on as we descend. She's been half asleep, coasting on air currents and pointing herself where she needed to go and now that we're dropping she's awake and aware. She's circling the landing strip like some kind of predator, watching and waiting for an opening so she can swoop down and attack the tarmac

Seeing the way cities are laid out, in perfect little beautiful grids, is so relaxing. Suburban sprawls packed with strange, enormous lives in little blocks of land, chunk by chunk, eventually touching residential, long strips of business and economy, commerce and trade and social lives, into the large, messy, chaotic industry beyond that. Infrastructure is beautiful. The leylines upon which planes were borne.

Water towers are so funny, why the hell did we refurbish an outdated means of water reservoirs, surely there could be a way to store more water more efficiently in treatment plants. Are they just for the Fun Cultural Aesthetic? Are they REALLY still that useful as a buffer?

Those little struts *are* at least partially used for banking but I think they're probably more like communications arrays combined with.. ballast isn't the right word. Counterweight? Idk. Beautiful regardless. Still love the little antennae

A little boat skims across a river, under a bridge where a highway passes over. I can tell it's moving fast, even from this high up. Tiny ecosystems exist beneath the hull, trillions of microbes, so far down beneath me now it's hard to make out any details other than the trail of white foam spray behind the boat.

Another water tower.

And another. Wild.

She rumbles as she drops, like she's grumpy, like she doesn't want to be on the ground. Silly girl, you can't fly forever. You need fuel and new passengers. She's flexing the little bits along her wings again, preparing for true descent now. The whistling is getting lower and lower pitched as we lose speed. I'm sure she isn't happy about it, but it's only going to be probably a half an hour or less before she's up in the air again. Calm down, girl.

And...

Touchdown.

One last roar as we slow. Beautiful. 💖

Kissing, coming right up, my dear!

Their omega, all of Eskel’s pack have long since agreed, is really quite alarmingly pretty. It’s something about his eyes, blue as a mountain lake, or maybe his hair, which is so gloriously soft under their hands when he lets them brush it, or possibly the way his cheeks flush and he grins when he masters some new task.

They have also agreed, very firmly, that none of them will mention, in words or otherwise, that they do find their omega utterly gorgeous, unless and until Jaskier suggests he’s interested in them.

They may not have ever gone through what Jaskier has, but they understand enough. He might never want them - he might never even be comfortable being naked around them - and if all they ever have of their omega is his perfect cinnamon scent and his songs and the softness of his hair, and the blessed warmth of him tucked up between them, safe and well-fed and theirs, then that is enough and more than enough.

Which means that being invited to share a bath with Jaskier is going to be a special sort of bliss and torment.

Eskel is fully prepared to find as many small chores as he needs to, if Jaskier prefers that Eskel not be naked at the same time. His boots could use a polish, and the laces could maybe use replacement, and he could take stock of the soaps and salves on the shelves around the bathing room -

But Jaskier does invite him to share the bath.

Jaskier looks immeasurably better than he did when Geralt brought him to the pack. There’s actual meat on his bones now - he’s not scrawny enough that Eskel can count his damn ribs - and there’s clear strength in his limbs. And he’s carrying himself better, too, his head held high and his shoulders back, not cringing every time one of the alphas so much as looks at him. It’s beautiful to watch him blossoming, gaining confidence, growing back into the bright-souled man he must have been before his fucking idiotic parents sold him. And his scent has lost the edge of bitterness it used to have, born of malnutrition and misery, and is now sweet and warm and absolutely, mouthwateringly delicious.

Being allowed to wash Jaskier’s hair is the sort of pleasure that Eskel could sink into for hours if he dared. The strands are soft beneath Eskel’s fingers, catching slightly on his calluses, and Jaskier makes tiny sounds of happiness, so quietly Eskel isn’t even sure he knows he’s doing so, that Eskel wants to hoard like a dragon’s treasure.

He is not expecting Jaskier to offer to wash his hair, but fuck if Eskel’s ever going to turn down anything their omega wants to give him. Jaskier’s fingers, strong and gentle against his scalp, are utter bliss.

Eskel lets Jaskier finish bathing first, pretending he needs lots of time to scrub between his toes so Jaskier can get dry and put clothing on before Eskel heaves himself out of the hot spring, and honestly he expects Jaskier to retreat once they’re both dressed. This has already been so much more than Eskel thought Jaskier could bear. Their omega is stronger than he looks; there’s a steel spine to him. It’s marvelously appealing.

But instead of retreating, Jaskier lets Eskel comb his hair, and then combs Eskel’s in turn. Eskel is genuinely not sure how he hasn’t turned into a puddle of happiness right here on the slick floor of the cavern. Their omega is touching him, is grooming him, is humming a cheerful little tune under his breath and smelling like warm cinnamon and ripe citrus and joy.

Eskel isn’t sure how the day could possibly get any better, and then it does.

Jaskier kisses him.

His lips are so soft and he smells so good and Eskel feels like he’s been whacked over the head with something heavy, because oh gods be kind their omega has kissed him.

Eskel cups his hand over Jaskier’s on his cheek and wonders if he might actually collapse from sheer unadulterated delight. Jaskier is almost vibrating, eyes wide and slightly panicked, but whatever he thinks is about to happen, apparently Eskel’s shocked delight isn’t it. He calms much, much more quickly than he would have three months ago, and his fear turns into shy, marvelous delight.

And he kisses Eskel again, and lets Eskel hold him close.

Eskel doesn’t know quite how he got so lucky. He’s going to have to thank Geralt, again, for finding an omega so strong, so brave, and so marvelous as their Jaskier has proven himself to be.

It's mostly whatever @ppctts makes me because I CANNOT DO ANYTHING aesthetic XD but honestly she's made me so many pretty things and it's mostly around Kaylee being a sunshine, sunflower, star child and I am so grateful to Gin that she spends any amount of time making me these pretty things. 7. what universe have you never considered writing in? why? uuuuh well I'm sure there are some universes/fandoms that I'm not familiar with/even realize exist so those because of my ignorance LOL but I'm gonna say for the same reason DC stuff?? It's intimidating and like yeah I'm here for comics but I just don't know DC that well and I don't wanna try to manipulate DC story lines to the already complicated Marvel shit XD

16. how have your faceclaim choices changed over time? So Happy once upon a time was Michael Weatherly in an oooooold thing I wrote, back before I really had an idea of his character beyond the little bits we get in comics. But when I decided to bring him on for the sole purpose of simping after @ppctts the queen of fcs @dr-foster suggested Jay Ryan because of IT Chapter 2 and honestly I have not looked back.

For Kay, admittedly I had a very different FC for her adult verses but that person has since been what's the nice way of saying triggering and just not a good person. I don't always change my FCs over cancel culture stuff because I believe people are allowed to make mistakes but this was beyond even my comfort level. But I'm so glad I changed Kay's adult fc to be Joanna Garcia Swisher. She's precious and adorable and it really gave me an avenue to explore this kind of character further than what I had originally thought of, plus Joanna was originally my @cheeseburgersandwarbirds FC for Carol before we stumbled upon the amazing Yvonne and I thought it was a nice call back to our gaia days XD

19. who was the first faceclaim you remember using, who? for what canon? So throw back to gaia days in 2009 I was in fact using RDJ for my Tony. It wasn't too long after the first Iron Man movie came out when my lovely Noon invited me to come write with her. But it was before I knew much about the comics. So I decided to go back and throw myself into the comics reading from the very beginning when I realized Tony was a little different in the comics than the movie. He was younger, blue-eyed, had a sort of classic rat pack charm that didn't exactly translate into the movie because they were going more for his sarcastic vibe which was fine but I realized I really enjoyed comic book Tony more and around the same time there was this show called White Collar and just Neal Caffrey had all the charm, vibe, good nature, snark, intelligence, and suave that comic Tony had and so it wasn't very long that I started using Matt Bomer as my Tony FC also back in 2009 and honestly I've never looked back.

23. What skills have you gained by roleplaying? uuuuh typing rather quickly without looking at the computer???? XDD I don't know. Maybe some patience? I've learned a lot about myself, and I've learned that not everyone is going to like you. It stings sometimes but when I get focused on the people who love and care for me it outweighs a lot of the negative that comes with RPing.

After poking around in my catalogue of fics, it's either one I wrote for Bodyguard, "Don't Ever Let Me Start," or "The Pretty Ones (Who Try to Kill You)" for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?

Most of what I write does have a happy ending. Hmm... Love Me Like You Drew (for Nancy Drew) and "Same Day, Different Jumpsuit" (the one and only Natasha/Mobius fic on AO3) are both near and dear to my heart.

Do you write crossovers?

Nope! I'm a real compartmentalizer.

Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Yes! So fun! It typically boils down to "I don't like the ship(s) and/or character(s) in this fic and am here to complain even though you tagged everything properly and I could have just scrolled past!" Fic hate is silly. I chuckle all the way to the "delete" button.

I've written for so many pairings (and a few trios), but Midge/Lenny from The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has an evergreen ability to set my heart aflutter.

What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

Rude. Probably my Scream AU of Nancy Drew. I would love to write it, but I can't currently see going back and reacquainting myself with all the characters I'd planned to include.

What are your writing strengths?

I love writing humour, in dialogue or otherwise. Also descriptions packed with metaphor.

What are your writing weaknesses?

I. Hate. Plot. I'm here—on this planet, on the internet—to create atmosphere, not complex storylines.

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

Love it! Like @mercurygray, I speak some French and Italian, so those are the ones I tend to add if I'm going beyond English.

What was the first fandom you wrote for?

Gilmore Girls (specifically A Year in the Life), and I am ready to return to it TOMORROW if Amy Sherman-Palladino provokes me with more bad characterization.

What’s a fandom/ship you haven’t written for yet but want to?

Nothing comes to mind! With both ships and fandoms, I pretty much jump when I wanna jump. I'm also always open to hearing requests.

What’s your favourite fic you’ve written?

Oh! Oh! What a question! It's my baby, my Pride and Prejudice AU, For Now, We May Remain Silent. I wrote it with my copy of Austen open on my desk next to my laptop, going line by line. I worked on it while coping with the final illness and death of someone I loved very much, so a lot of love went into it, and I'm glad I have the fic as a reminder of that time.

Here are her paintbrushes, disorganized and held in the loose grip of big, old coffee cans. The brushes rattle when Peter runs his finger over their handles, the faded red bristles spinning. A thick, flat brush with discoloured yellow bristles might be his favourite. Glancing over his shoulder, he furtively strokes the uneven hairs with his thumb. They all have this well-used quality that makes his chest clench confusingly. Michelle’s been living a whole life with these in her hand, he thinks, and I don’t know anything about it.

i do believe the dealbreaker for me about brba and especially bcs being the best tv shows i have personally ever seen, is that they do not take themselves too seriously. you watch most marvel shows? it may have all the cheesy comedy and jokes you want, but in the end it's all about coming up with some kind of morale that makes you understand why always we need heroes <3 and we are all a big family in the end <3 also go subscribe to disney plus please we are not an evil corporation <3. you watch got or episode one of house of dragon? it's literally PACKED with Catchy Meaningful SentencesTM that will be quoted online and then turned into memes and their delivery is so serious and grave that it's actually involuntarily comic to me. but i digress.

brba and bcs have this quite rare quality of NOT THINKING THEIR FANS ARE IDIOTS, and so, as vince recently said in an interview, it's all about subtext, and the reality of the human condition, which is sometimes noble and fierce (hi nachito mi amor), sometimes is tragic and hard to watch (hi kim and chuck, putting you here together so you can fight about jimmy for a while), sometimes it's pathetic and ironically so (jimmy my beloved idiot, but also basically 80% of the scenes starring walter white). peter and vince and the whole amazing crew of writers and directors have the courage to respect their viewers — and the first way to do that is not taking themselves too seriously, because real life rarely is. life is messy and pretty embarrassing for the most part... and damn does it feel refreshing to see THAT actually portrayed onscreen.

The graves were open, and he went to each one with bare hands, taking soil to pack over the dead bit by bit. Nightfall came and the howling wolves at a distance kept him company besides an unnoticed family of silent horned owls watching in a tall tree. The work was tedious, but by the leaking light of sun over the west horizon with his tired mind feeling about as soft and tangled as ramswool, he patted the last mound of dirt and lay in a patch of grass to sleep.

Through a low fog as their horses climbed over the mountains, the great stones of Skyhold came into view. Dirthadin marveled, eyes fixated on the massive structure as he perched his horse at the top of a cliff to see it, nearly forgetting the chill of the thin air.

It might have been the Dread Isle but Valor without Morphs wasn’t something completely suicidal anymore. Well, for anything short of a small army, anyway. Still dangerous - its misty forests were natural homes for wolves and other dangerous animals but no more dangerous than anywhere else. Well, from her (well-experienced, if she were to say so herself) judgment, anyway.

Which was why Farina could find herself comfortable enough to lie back, enjoy the evening breeze and relax on a hill overlooking the battlefield where they’d had that giant face-off against that army of Morphs. If there was going to be imminent trouble, she was more than sure that they were more than capable enough to fend off anyone or thing that came their way. They’ve just beat back a whole dragon, after all.

Which shouldn’t even have been a thing. Dragons had been extinct on Elibe for nearly a thousand years, after all. She’ll recognize all that talk about Arcadia when she actually sees it, shhh.

“Yes, that was a harrowing battle. It was a miracle we all managed to survive.” A cool and calm voice chimed in from her left. She’d recognise it as from her big sis Fiora without even looking.

“But...now, w-we can all meet together like this. I-isn’t that great?” And another voice piped in from her right. A jittery voice filled with nervous energy from her younger sister Florina. Both of them lying down relaxing right next to herself on that same hill and both looking up at the stars with her together.

“Uh-huh.”, came Farina’s hum of agreement before she sent her gaze back up into the night sky. Well, Flo had a point. So far as Farina was concerned, easily the best part of the end of this mission was the fact that she could finally hang out with her sisters without some huge pressing emergency hanging over their heads. Well, packing for the return trip back to Lycia aside, anyway.

Well, whatever. That was something she could worry about in daylight hours. For now, she just wants to rejoice in the fact that they were all alive and not in any imminent mortal dang-

“Oh, wow! It’s a shooting star!”, a soft voice pointed out, an outstretched arm pointing straight up at the sight, a moment’s marvel having seemingly transformed her shyness into wonder.

Farina tilted her gaze up to where Florina’s arm was pointing and...”Who~a!”, came the cry in one airy breath of wonder. ‘Oh, wow.’ was right. It was truly beautiful, a faint streak scattering a trail of stardust in its wake. A slight tilt of her head to her right found her a very curious sight. A flustered (as usual) Florina, rapidly switching between one set of whispers to another. Wonder what she could be up t-Oh, yeah!

There was an old fairy tale that said that any wish spoken under a shooting star three times will come true. Well, by hearsay, anyway. She wasn’t one much for wishes or fairy tales. The harshness of the world had crushed any such hopes out ages ago. But there was one wish she could think of. One that she could at least hope to be granted.

So, Farina closed her eyes and made her wish and spoke it three times.

“Eh?”, came a surprised cry from her left. “I thought you didn’t believe in these things, Farina.” And she'd be right. She still didn’t. But just for this moment, she could pretend to believe.

“Eh?”, came an excited cry from her right. “You made a wish, sister? Tell us! Tell us!”

A request to which Farina could only answer with a laughing... “Not telling! It won’t come true if I did!”

As she drowned out Florina’s groan and continued begging with her own uproarious laughs, Farina cast another gaze back up at the night sky where she made her wish. For a moment like this to come again. For these three sisters to never have to cross lances. And may they all return home. To Ilia. Safely.

It was a bit of a far cry from her usual wishes but then again, she could grant those herself easily. Well, it wasn’t as though wishes meant much of anything. Not a whole did. If they ended up having the misfortune to sign up on opposing sides, well, the mercenary code was very clear on that scenario with an outcome she would much rather avoid.

Maybe she’ll even take a job on another continent somewhere. Elibe can’t be alone in the world. If she ran far far away, then she’ll stand a better chance of avoiding having to cross lances with her sisters. Yeah, that was a plan. She could just slip away quietly and start looking the moment they touched shore at Port Badon. She hated good-byes, anyway.

This Day in X-Project - March 10

Topaz's Birthday

PHASE 2

2015: Clint texts Matt about an interesting development with the Hubble telescope. Megan texts Topaz about a tiny weird space in the second floor hallway of the mansion. Matt makes a journal entry about being bored to tears. Warren texts Matt a generous offer of hookers and blow. Scott meets Jean as she is unpacking her room and is haunted by the similarities - and differences.

2016: Jessica posts her nuggets of wisdom, but not everyone takes the advice well. Alison and Xavin talk about the mansion and fitting in. Arthur emails the members of X-Factor Investigations (sans Quentin and Jessica) to talk about her posts on the journals and suggest someone talk to her. Alex asks for a length of rope so he can tie his broken foot onto a skateboard, Kyle and Arthur oblige and plans are hatched.

2017: Laurie reflects she needs to sleep less as she missed everything that happened in the last week. Jubilee texts Amanda to make sure she’s okay. Amanda gives Topaz a second-hand car for her birthday and Topaz is boggled. Angelo is glad about the death of Joseph Nicolosi who pioneered gay conversion therapy.

2018: Jean-Paul congratulates Topaz with her birthday. Topaz posts drunkenly about her bar crawl. Maya wishes Topaz a happy birthday as well. Topaz visits Gabriel's bar during the Great 21st Birthday Bender. It's probably the most productive conversation Topaz has had in a month. After Topaz' birthday binge, the Sefton siblings make sure she gets tucked into bed, safe and sound.

2019:

2020: Topaz closes the library and hands out dye packs in honour of Holi and her birthday; Felicia posts a picture of her state of readiness for the holiday; Nica praises Bobby’s ingenuity in setting up dye booby traps; Wanda apologises for using her powers to reverse explode a dye pack; Bobby announces he’s open for business in making ice balls dye delivery; Megan is inspired by the colours and is painting; the Stepford sisters join in on the fun; Marie-Ange offers sanctuary at the rate of one coffee drink or pastry item per person; Topaz congratulates whoever rigged her door; Betsy confesses to protecting her hair by using her powers to discourage attacks.

2021: X-Men Mission: Agents of SHIELD: Garrison gets a call from Phil Coulson, asking for help from the X-Men to retrieve a captured Captain America; Garrison posts an urgent call for X-Men; the group flies to a spot near the A.I.M. base where Coulson meets them for a briefing; the X-Men split into two teams - Marvel Girl, Spectrum and Daredevil go and locate Captain America with Agent Simmons on comms, while Dominion, Psylocke and Shadowcat shut down the security systems; both groups encounter trouble in the form of AIM guards and robots, but manage to get to the hanger, with Captain America and Agents May and Fitz; before they can escape, MODOK appears to cut them off; a gap is made in MODOK’s personal shielding to allow the telepaths to attack his mind; MODOK escapes and the X-Men depart ahead of the main SHIELD team. Nica posts about the mission in her journal, sparking a word definition meme.

2022: Kevin encounters Darcy working very late and they both have points about self care. Pyotr posts about updating the X-Men uniforms so they’re not so grim.

2023: A trip into District X has Arthur playing passenger to Madin's very interesting driving while Match swears like a sailor.
