for no reason literally at all, I’m thinking about Sam figuring out Dean has feelings for Cas and is ALL ABOUT IT but not like. outright. But he is like “finally. I can buy things for Dean that aren’t related to the car or weapons or something”

So whenever he needs to give a present he’ll buy something angel related (trinkets and shit) or whatever. He won’t make any comments and Dean will give him the ??? look but he’ll do it anyway

and Sam has a fantastic time escalating the gifts to sillier things that are more and more specific to Cas — Dean gets a bee plushy and with it a build-a-bear trenchcoat. Dean gets an angel topper for the antenna of Baby. Sam insists on playing pin the halo on the angel. Sam makes Cas stand with his hand in plaster for however long so he can craft a handprint Christmas ornament for Dean

bonus thought: Sam gets Cas a squirrel plushy that has a flannel and Cas is like “why would a squirrel wear a flannel?” and then is like “it kind of reminds me of your brother” to which Dean is like !!! while Sam can’t stop laughing

additional bonus thought: Claire and Jody find out and start coming up with ideas for gifts and jokes. Claire would hand every gift to Cas with “I got it at the Hot Topical” for funsies

final bonus thought: because of the gifts and things Claire says, Alex just assumes Cas and Dean are out as a couple and tries to use them as an example of a perfectly fine interspecies couple when Jody finds out she’s dating something supernatural. Jody isn’t having it so when everyone is at the table together she brings it up to try and get them on her side and there is extensive gay panic

So, we all know that Cas branded Dean’s soul with the handprint. And then in his last scene left a bloody handprint on Dean’s jacket.

But, have we ever considered that this last handprint was Cas letting dean go? Like, literally removing the handprint brand he left on his soul? That it’s Castiel saying, “I love you so much that I’m dying for you and freeing you from the claim I made on you. I know you are not mine even if I will always be yours and that’s ok. Please live a good life now that my burden is gone from you.”

And if that’s the case, do you think Dean could feel it? The mark being gone? Do you think that left an emptiness nothing else could fill and that’s one of the reasons he was so fine with dying? Because for the first time since he met him, there was truly nothing of Cas left on Earth or with Dean?

[Opening Scene in a forest with a car. Also Sam and Dean are there.] Sam: I told you not to fuck with my car! Dean: Fuck you, I didn't fuck with your car. Sam: This is why dad beat you as a child. [The two begin fighting, shouting unintelligible insults at each other which show their deeply messed up psyches as a result of their poor childhood.] [A vague monster appears, grabbing Dean tightly by the throat. He comes to him as a really really hot guy, and Dean actually doesn't seem to mind.] Monster: I know what you are. I know what you are really looking for. I know what you have been waiting for for all of these years. [Dean's eyes trail to the monster, looking at him brotherly and admiring his totally sick bod.] [A beat. Dean is about to open his mouth, his eyes trailing from the monster's to his lips before-] Monster: A brother. [Dean's expression falls. He's not so bricked up now, and in fact seems disgusted. Was it himself he was disgusted with? Or was it... his father? He goes to the nearest tree and punches it, his knuckles bleeding. He watches the blood fall. He thinks he deserves it.] [Cas appears, out of nowhere or something, or maybe he walks. It's probably a bit awkward at first to be honest. Dean is crying, or maybe he's not. He never cries, so it's a bit hard to tell.] [Cas looks at Dean with a vulnerable expression. He looks like the epitome of an open wound. Too soft for his own good. He puts a hand on Dean's, who almost seems to flinch at the touch.] [Another beat. The two are staring into each other's eyes. But it's not romantic, they're just good friends.] [Except not really. It's hard to love someone who doesn't want to know the truth about themselves.]

Cas: Are you okay, baby doll? [Dean is angry again.] Dean: I'm fine. Get your little fmaggot fingers off of me. Cas: Why won't you let me treat you like a companion? [Dean cries at the touch. Or maybe he doesn't.] Dean: I'm not worthy of healing. Cas: But I love you. We're brothers. [Dean is bricked up rn, and this is a total mood killer.] Dean: We're not brothers. [Sam is just kind of there. With a girl or some gaping hole in his heart just like his brother.]

Cas: We're companions. We are life partners. We are civil mates forever. [There is a lot of sexual tension right now, but it's actually a bit awkward and quite uncomfortable. The shuffling of Sam's feet on the leaves is a pathetic space filler.] [A beat.] Cas: You're my sweet cheese, man.

Jack: I'm depressed.

Jack: Also I was stabbed, can you get Cas please.

Thinking about how Cas had to kill Dean over a thousand times. Just Dean. Not Sam, never Sam.

Thinking about how dead in the eyes Cas was when Naomi told him he succeeded and was ready for the real thing.

Thinking about how Dean never knew that part of what was done to Cas in Heaven involved him have to kill Dean thousands of times.

Thinking about how the angels didn’t know that Dean would beg Cas to be okay; they thought he’d beg for his life. But Dean begged for Cas to be back in his life instead.

Thinking about how Dean said “I need you” and Cas dropped the blade, but they both pretended not to know what broke mind control.

Thinking about how the writers thought “I need you” was more Bro Pal than “I love you”.

Thinking about how Sam is asking Dean if he’s okay after Cas dinged him up pretty good. Asking about his feelings because he knows Cas physically healed Dean, but that there’s a lot of unsaid crap there.

One of the things about Supernatural that drives me crazy is the theme about horrible biological families (with a huge emphasis on fathers) and the monologues given on this topic because it’s one of the examples of how the supernatural writers could be SO good.

The monologue Metatron gives to God is unbelievable. We just see him as evil and then he delivers this devastating monologue that paints him as nothing more than a heartbroken child desperate for his father’s attention.

And this theme is seen so often and it’s gut wrenching every time. Bobby. Sam. Dean. Lucifer. Claire. Crowley. Etc. It’s an integral part of every main characters upbringing and subsequent personality.

And then we get to see the beauty that is picking your own family and being truly loved. Bobby adopts Sam and Dean. Castiel becomes family. Jack is adopted by the boys. Charlie is like a sister. (And many other examples)

And all of this makes the endings focus on biological family all the more infuriating because they just abandoned this beautiful development they built for 15 seasons. The ending should’ve encapsulated the beautiful quote they literally wrote and had one of the main characters deliver:

“Family doesn’t end with blood. But it doesn’t start there, either.”
