Transpacific Stories Rec List!
Happy Lunar New Year!  To celebrate, I thought I’d do a “Top 5″ rec list of creative works that I really enjoy by transpacific Asian creators.
1. diaspora babies by Kai Cheng Thom (poem)
This spoken word poem haunts me to this day.  There’s a lot of immigrant (especially Chinese immigrant) emotions mixed up with queer experiences as a child of immigrants, and the vibes are truly just indescribable.  It cannot be expressed, only felt, so link is to the 4 minute video with captions.
2. Yellow Peril: Queer Destiny by Love Intersections (documentary)
A documentary about Vancouver drag artist Maiden China, which also features lines from diaspora babies!  It is all about that queer Chinese immigrant experience, discussing the nuances of both individually and together.  What is it like to be a Chinese immigrant, or the child of Chinese immigrants, in a North American society?  What is it like to be queer?  What is it like where those two parts of you intersect?
I had the chance to meet one of the directors on this project and listen to his guest seminar, and the story behind this documentary and the production house came from an incident where some members of the local Chinese Canadian community launched a very public opposition to LGBTQ+ policies by the school board.  The news media of course went into a frenzy over this, and the producers noticed how the story was framed as “the Chinese community is “traditional” to the point of homophobia” (which...yes, there was homophobia involved, but not because of an innate “traditional Chinese are all homophobic” quality).
The documentary creators wanted to unpack, explore, and challenge this, and also to assert that queer Chinese people exist, which is exactly what the documentary does.  It showcases a variety of different relationships and interactions that queer Chinese people have - with their families, their immigrant communities, their heritage traditions, their broader Western society.  It’s a really complex and nuanced discussion, and one of the best documentaries I’ve ever watched.
3. Disappearing Moon Cafe by SKY Lee (novel)
Oh, you thought I was done with the queer Chinese immigrant theme?  Absolutely never.  This is a landmark book in the history of Chinese Canadian publishing - it was the first novel by a Chinese Canadian author to ever be mass distributed by a publishing house (SKY Lee is a lesbian, so first queer Chinese Canadian author as well!)  It follows the story of the Wong family across four generations, discussing themes such as settler colonialism and the roles and relationships that Chinese immigrants had and have with that, migration, family, and the nature of queerness in a non-Western context.
(I do have a whole essay talking about how understandings of queerness are frequently grounded in Western perspectives and how SKY Lee challenges and reframes non-heteronormativity in a uniquely Chinese immigrant context.  But also, you will totally ship Kae and Hermia.   You just will)
A deeply emotional, intense exploration of Chinese Canadian immigration, from its history to its experiences, good and bad and everything in between.  Truly, this may be a fictional novel, but the research is so well done, and if not every detail is historically accurate, the emotional truth of it is.  An excellent book that gives you so much food for thought.
4. A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki (novel)
One of the most intense books I’ve ever read, and am still thinking about years later.  I can’t speak to the accuracy of the experiences it represents, but it is a book that will make your heart ache and long and wonder.
The premise: Ruth, a Japanese American novelist, discovers debris from the 2011 Japanese tsunami washed up on the cost of British Columbia.  One of these is a Hello Kitty lunchbox containing the diary of a girl named Nao.  Nao is a Japanese American teenager whose family had to relocate back to Japan.  She struggles with living in a foreign culture, family struggles and mental health issues, and severe bullying.  However, she also meets her great grandmother, a Buddhist monk over a hundred years old who was an anarchist, feminist, and novelist in her youth.  In documenting her great grandmother’s story in her diary, Nao comes to tell her own.  The novel goes back and forth between Ruth translating the diary and wanting to learn more about Nao, and Nao’s story (and her great grandmother’s) as documented in the diary.
One of my favourite aspects of this book is the way it plays with perspective.  What is a story?  Who is telling it?  How is a story created and changed by every person who touches it?  What does it mean for a story to end?  Fair warning, there are some very heavy topics dealt with in this book, including depression, suicide, attempted sexual assault, and grooming.  It is a very good book, but please look after your own well-being first.
5. M. Butterfly by David Henry Hwang (1988 play)
You know the opera, Madame Butterfly?  The racist Orientalist story of the white American Navy officer who goes to Japan, marries a Japanese girl for convenience, abandons her and their child for an American wife, and then she kills herself because she’s so in love with him that she can’t bear it?  Man, just typing that out pissed me off, and it sure pissed off David Henry Hwang too.  So let me tell you what he did about it.
There was a historical incident where a French diplomat, Bernard Boursicot, was caught in a honeypot trap by the Chinese spy Shiu Pei Pu, who was a Chinese opera singer.  For those who are unaware, Chinese opera singers are traditionally men.  Boursicot was unaware of this.  He had a decades long affair with Shiu Pei Pu, who identified themselves as female to him, and they eventually lived together as a family with a child.  It wasn’t until Boursicot was caught smuggling documents and put on trial that he found out Shiu Pei Pu was AMAB.
M. Butterfly is a play based off of this story, with explorations of Orientalism and how Song Liling (the play’s Shiu Pei Pu) was able to exploit racist beliefs and tropes such as “yellow fever” to win the heart and confidence of René Gallimard (the play’s Boursicot).   There’s a monologue in the original 1988 play (I’m not sure if it’s in the 2017 revision though) that Song delivers in the first few scenes of the play that explicitly addresses and tears apart the original Madame Butterfly story (which makes Song’s later use of it to seduce Gallimard all the more spicy - dude, they literally told you from the beginning why they hate the story, and you still believe that they want to be your docile little Butterfly?)  The overall play is a fantastically clever deconstruction of truly so much Orientalism and really challenges how Westerners perceive and depict Asian (especially East Asian) people.
A note on gender in this story: When the play was first performed in 1988, Song Liling’s character is AMAB and largely identifies as a man, with the strong subtext that he enjoys presenting as feminine.  Since 1988, Hwang has acknowledged that the gender reveal of the original play reinforces gender binaries, and has expressed the desire to revise his depiction of gender in the play to encompass genderfluid/GNC identities, which he did in the 2017 Broadway revival.  I have not seen the new version of the play, in which Song identifies themselves as AFAB and male presenting to Gallimard, so I can’t judge how it was handled.  I’ve heard that 2017 Song embraces a more explicitly genderfluid identity, but cannot confirm this.  The 2017 revision is based off of new information revealed about the Boursicot case, including that Shiu Pei Pu initially introduced themselves to Boursicot as someone AFAB who was presenting as male.

Maybe Allies with their 5-7 year old son that's a music prodigy. Lile one day they they heard their son singing Derniére Danse ( the male/ deeper version ) so beautifully and fluently, despite never speaking French not a day in his life. Or when they found their son playing a the piano professionally and beautifully. BONUS: the counties son likes to be around Austria a lot because they fair similar interests.
America: Well we defiantly need a piano…is there a video game piano thing? Like Guitar Hero? Alfred has never been one for classics or anything that doesn’t have a good strong beat, but he will always support his child.
England: The classic? Not a bad choice. Very soothing and angelic. Hopes his son will eventually get into Rock and Roll so they can rock out together
France: Mon Bebe! You are so incredible! Very proud of his child and will encourage the frequent trips to Austria. Not only does it make his child happy, he gets to stare at Austria as well.
Russia: My little one, how beautiful! You so so talented. Would you like to take lessons? I would love to hear you perform some of my classics, da. Proud papa bear
China: That is beautiful! My child is a prodigy! We will get you many lessons and more instruments! Are you interested in learning some of our historical classics as well?
Canada: Oh wow! How beautiful! Would you like to take lessons or learn on your own?

okay but I absolutely need the lemonade scar lore
sorry for the wait anon I wanted to make sure I had time to write this up properly
I’ve had to get stitches only once in my life (so far) and it was an entirely separate lemonade incident (that may also potentially involve the vengeful ghost of J.F.K. /j)
a while back my mom had a conference in Boston and my dad and I came along bc my uncle and his family also live up there so we wanted to visit
for whatever reason my uncle decided that we should visit the JFK Library of all places, which is kinda a niche choice of tourist destination in Boston considering all the historical stuff there, but is esp interesting considering my parents and I have lived in the DFW area for a long time and therefore have inevitably gone to the sixth story museum which is literally a jfk museum built in the building he was shot from
there’s honestly a decent chance my uncle was lile lmao let’s take the Dallas people to the jfk museum bc it’s funny since he was killed in dallas, but it’s also entirely possible he just wanted to go there anyway and didn’t wanna do the usual tourist stuff
anyway no hate to the jfk library it’s a solid museum lmao. after we looked through it we went to the museum cafe and I was like ooooo they have nice looking bottled lemonade, let me get some
I get up to the cash register w no problem, I’m just holding a glass bottle of lemonade just above the countertop (as one does) when it spontaneously decides it actually does not want to be in my hand (or is cursed by jfks ghost) and slips out
somehow the precise height I was holding it above the counter is far enough above it that the bottle shatters on impact but simultaneously close enough that when my hand reflexively tries to hold the bottle tighter as it slips I manage to grab the very top of the bottle at the exact moment it turns into a fistful of broken glass
I didn’t really feel it at the time interestingly enough, I only really had one cut that wasn’t clearly surface level, and so when the (understandably) horrified lady at the register asked me if I was okay I was like “yeah am good” and I went to go eat my lunch
but I guess the sight of me standing in a puddle of blood and lemonade (plus the deeply entrenched usamerican fear of customer lawsuits) was bad enough that they not only had someone come in and look at it and help me bandage it up but were like oh we Called an Ambulance which was. so completely unnecessary but lmao
I remember my dad being like you guys are so nice if not overly concerned yes we had a good time at the museum no we won’t sue it’s okay y’all did your jobs
the ambulance arrives, the EMT looks at my hand which is now starting to hurt and is still bleeding, and is like yeah you need stitches. which I hadn’t really considered until they said it bc I’d assumed it wasn’t that bad, so I guess it’s good a medical professional told me bc had anyone else done it I would’ve thought they were being overly worried
(tho to be fair they also offered me a ride to the ER but lmao I wasn’t about to pay thousands for a ride my uncle could give me if I wasn’t actively bleeding out)
to make a long story short my uncle dropped my dad and I off at ER, I made a lot of fun jokes w the staff, had a panic attack about the numbing shot, they brought in a psych to help distract me but were very bemused by my panic when I’d been joking w them earlier and also the fact that after the shot I was like lmao I’m good and watched them sew up my hand
ended up getting 6 separate stitches bc even though the actual cut was less than an inch long bc its location at the base of my ring finger made it a very gnarly shape, and it def was still bleeding 3 hours after i got it so it’s a good thing I went to the ER. the stitching made the scar even more fun bc you can actually see the perpendicular lines where they got put in
it doesn’t photograph super well but I can try if y’all want

Some black youtubers I like you can support
So I’m not a very big blog. Obviously. But I figured what little influence I have I can use to direct people in this time to some underrated black creators I like since I spend all my time watching YouTube and feel free to add as always. Also this was originally supposed to be in order of sub count but that didn’t work out at all.
1. Jarvis Johnson.
Probably one of the most popular creators on this list with over 1 million subscribers but extremely funny and if you haven’t heard of him and you like comedic Cody Ko-esque commentary videos, go give him a sub. He’s reacted to many of the same channels Danny Gonzalez and Drew Gooden have such as Troom Troom and 5 Minute Crafts. He’s also a software engineer which is pretty badass.
2. Lana Summer.
Does mainly fashion and hair related videos but is very chill and easy to listen to. Sometimes I like to put on her videos while I’m doing things even though I 100% have straight hair and she does mostly curly hair tutorials. But she’s covered a large umbrella of beauty topics in her videos and if you’re the least bit feminine it’s highly possible she’s covered at least one topic that’ll be useful to you. She’s very pretty (lowkey crushing on her) and lovely and I enjoy her channel a lot.
3. The Curly Guy.
A highly underrated channel that does content similar to Lana’s but for guys! He’s a guy with long, curly hair and talks about how to take care of it. I am always here for nontoxic male positivity and getting more guys involved in taking care of their appearance. It’s very sweet to watch. He’s also reviewed bad hair products which we all like to watch bad reviews of things on YouTube, right, and once pierced his ears at home. So. Idk about you but that sounds great to me.
4. Jolie K.
We’ve got some black queer representation in here! She’s a queer woman who makes videos about queer women. She hasn’t uploaded in a minute but I think she’s still worth supporting. She’s done some cool story times about being gay as well as some beauty stuff.
5. Honest.
Honest is a drama channel run by a black guy who talks about drama between music artists and sometimes youtubers. He’s not only a black person in the drama side of YouTube but he’s a black man in the drama side of YouTube two demographics that feel excluded from that world. If you do like drama videos like Teaspill, it’s cool to support a POC in that world. I can’t say I agree with everything he says but that’s drama channels for you.
6. Ranting Minority.
This guy’s super new and super underrated! He makes spicy political content, is extremely eloquent and chill, which makes him good to listen to, and is a leftist. If you can’t stop watching left-tubers like I can’t, I would totally recommend this guy. He makes videos on racial and societal issues from a liberal and anti conservative perspective. He has less than a thousand subscribers, so I’d highly advise giving him a sub.
7. MacDoesIt
So this guy is also one of the more popular on here. Basically if you watch any LGBTQ+ content on YouTube at all he pops up. He’s like the Strange Æons of the mlm community in that respect. He’s super funny, does reaction videos, does some very comedic red carpet fashion reviews, just if you haven’t subbed to MacDoesIt, what are you doing?
8. Kat Blaque.
Kat Blaque has been under fire for certain opinions before, but all in all she’s a good leftist, political youtuber who is also a black trans woman. She does videos on LGBT+ issues, racial issues, lots of other things, and is a smart, beautiful lady. Basically you can’t be a political youtuber without being controversial so, decide for yourself if you wanna support her, I personally do. Also I am not a trans woman but I know trans women who have said she helped them figure out certain things, so that’s good.
9. Rickey Thompson
A black gay comedian who does story times and random funny videos. I also think he’s an ex viner. I’m only a comedic fan of this one but I do know he’s very handsome and I came from his LGBT+ story times. Just someone you might wanna check out. He’s kind of like Mac in some ways just like. Much chiller.
10. WiseJae
I love how this is a mix of semi popular youtubers and super obscure youtubers I like for very specific reasons. WiseJae is a very small youtuber with a little over a thousand subs last time I checked but she does videos about jobcorps and trade school and has recently started making videos about college. So basically. A cool guide for how to get your life started if you’re a young, low income adult or late teen. She’s also got a very pretty accent, soothing voice and . . . is just so fucking beautiful . . . so. So gorgeous. So like. If you’re like. 18. And you’ve been thinking about a place like jobcorps but don’t know how to start. I would say her channel would be the first place I’d go for information.
11. NotYourMommasHistory
I actually love historical fashion. And this black woman named Cheyney is a historical reenactor with a focus on African and African-American history, and often overlooked part of history and fashion history in general. She’s done stuff like historical head wraps and similar as well as talked about serious issues like sexual harassment. Most recently she did a video on white people misrepresenting Martin Luther King Jr. Basically if you like channels like Rachel Maksy, Bernadette Banner, or our meme mom Karolina Żebrowska, you’ll probably like her. Or maybe you’re just curious about African history. That’s cool too.
12. Rebranding Autism.
Black autistic rep! Jen is a black autistic woman who talks about autism, the struggles she’s faced and she was literally sent to the notoriously abusive Judge Rotenberg center and talked about the atrocities committed there. She’s amazing and has also made vlogs about her life, made advice videos on mental health that are relatable for many people not just people with autism specifically, tho certainly those too. She also makes music.
13. Tater Tatiana
Small youtuber who is in the anti Onision community. She reviewed Onision’s shitty books. She writes, does drama videos and does beauty videos as well. She read Onision fanfiction on her channel, Lilee Jean tried to take down her channel and she bounced back. I highly recommend the channel, I love Tatiana and I’ve loved watching her channel grow these last few years.
So, that’s my list, will definitely add more later, I hope this didn’t come off as pandering or me thinking black people are charity cases, which they aren’t, this is simply me, a white girl, trying to share some black creators I enjoy instead of just spouting my opinions on tumblr, since I come from a privileged place.

Hii can you do a twice reaction to meeting their gf royal parents like queen and king(princess diaries style?
Sorry for the wait !! But better later than never, right ?
` NAYEON ´
Tumblr media
would try to act as clam and polite as possible
wants to make a very good impression as not only is she meeting your parents but they also were meeting the king and queen
but as the dinner goes on, Nayeon starts to feel less nervous as your parents were actually quite caring amd sweet people
it ends up going really well as your parents utterly adore Nayeon by the end of the night
it becomes a normal thing for Nayeon to eat dinner at least once a week with you and your parents.
`JEONGYEON '
Tumblr media
would just be herself
she wanted your parents to know and love the real her and not some act because they were royal
would make normal conversion, some small talk
your parents liked the fact the female was just being herself and felt she was a great match for you
` MOMO ´
Tumblr media
super nervous, more nervous than the time that she actually found out she was dating a royal princess
she would be a bit more on the quieter side, only speaking if being spoken to
she would be afaird of saying the wrong thing and being banished to the dungeon or whatever
would take time for her to be more comfortable around your parents.
` SANA ´
Tumblr media
nervous sana, only makes for a more clumsy sana
not only did she break a glass, she ended up spilling hot soap on your father
"OH MY. I'M SO SORRY !!"
would keep apologizing, despite the king telling her it was okay
by the end of the night, sana would have stepped on the queen foot by accident as y'all were leaving
you'd end up comforting sana after the disaster of the meeting
"it's okay. I'm sure next time won't be so bad."
"NEXT TIME!?"
` JIHYO ´
Tumblr media
one of the more clamer ones or at least she tried to be
she made sure to do a bit of research of the kingdome and your parents before meeting them
your parents would be quite impressed with how mature the female was
they would appreciate the fact she took time out of her day to actually reading their Kingdom histor
they could tell you were in good hands
overall, it was a goodnight.
` MINA ´
Tumblr media
super nervous af
you wanted to make sure Mina was actually ready to meet your parents
it took awhile but eventually Mina said she was ready to meet them
she was still her normal quiet self, only talking when a question was directed at her
Ayou would hold her hand trough out the whole night since you knew how nervous she was
as the night went on, Mina could feel the pressure lessing but nonetheless she was still her quiet shy self.
` DAHYUN ´
Tumblr media
it was an accident
dahyun wasn't suppose to know that your parents were royal
but apparently your guys mothers use to be really good friends before your mother became queen after marrying your father
you knew your mother was having some old friends for dinner but you had no idea that their daughter was your girlfriend
to say she was shocked, would be a complete understatement
she'd pull you aside and ask why you didn't tell her
" i was scared that you would look at me differently or that you wouldn't treat me the same. "
" you're silly. I would never do that, doesn't matter if you're royal or not, i feel in love with you fornyour personality. "
both your parents would be thrilled when you told them y'all were a couple.
` CHAEYOUNG ´
Tumblr media
not only were you introducing your girlfriend to your royal parents
but also your royal homophobic parents
you thought maybe if they got to actually meet Chae that they would grow to understand
but that wasn't the case. not at all.
they kept making small comments like "it's just a phase" and you were always scared to talk back to your parents sonyou kinda just took it
but Chaeyoung on the other hand, had enough.
" look you maybe the queen and king and this might get me thrown in the dungeon but you have no right to speak to y/n lile that. she is the smartest, kindess and beautiful girl I've ever known and her liking the same gender doesn't change any of that. She's still the same person, she's still your daughter and instead of making her feel so fucking miserable, you should try to understand and support her like good parents would. "
after that little rant, she grabbed your hand and you two went back to her place to cuddle
` TZUYU ´
Tumblr media
she would be terrified because of the fact your parents were royal
she that royal people could be a little more traditional
she was afraid they wouldn't like or accpect her ad your girlfriend for whatever reason
however, after actually talking and getting to really know them some, she'd be surprised by how open-minded and chill they actually were
she felt a lot more better as the night went on, talking more as time just seem to fly by after the first 10 minutes of meeting your parents.

An Open Letter to BTS
Hi guys, time for another rant *cue idol*
So I recently watched a video on youtube by this girl SherlizaMoe (i think that's her yt user) on colourism in Kpop, Asia and in a BTS context. She talked about her struggles as a teenager with her skin colour, using lighter makeup in cosplay and generally just being a victim to the whole lighter-is-beautiful mentality before she finally started to love and feel comfortable in her own skin. She also touches on colourism in Asian countries such as India, China, Korea, Philipines etc. It's a great video and touches on a little but if everything for example why it is so prevailant, the historical reasons behind it and the mainstream stars now contributing to colourist ideas by promoting whitening creams, skin bleaches etc.
In that video she touched on kpop as well and more specifically, BTS. She obviously showed an older clip of Namjoon saying how he couldn't see Tae or Hoseok because they were "too black". Now, he has apologized and genuinely moved on from him ignorant beliefs and is very self-reflective and self-aware. It's evident in how much he has grown as a person that we don't need him to constantly apologize or reassure people with his words when we can see in his actions and personality that he has changed.
BUT I will say, the reason for my post is that I see the most change in Namjoon. He made a mistake and he learned from it. What hurts me the most - as it always did in the past but i ignored it like a dumbass - is that how the rest of the group members, unknowningly or knowingly i can't say, are still a victim of that mentality that lighter is the way to go. They may not say it directly but we all know actions speak louder than words. More specifically, Jimin, Jungkook and Taehyung are the ones I still see that indirectly make these inferences.
For example, ever since their debut, there have been mupltiple instances in season's greetings, summer package and most of all, Bon Voyage where Jimin has made a commeny about other members getting tanner. He has called Jungkook a kamdoongie years back and I remember it was a big deal for a while until everyone - including myself - dismissed it as them being young and dumb. But that is it. I do think that Jimin still hasn't realised it. That his words and sometimes actions do hurt Army such as myself who are of tanner or very dark complexion. He constantly makes a note of Jungkook tanning, often teasing him for getting tanned which I have found hurtful myself and I can't imagine how Jungkook must feel.
I will say, it's Jimin who contributes the most in terms of his teasing comments. We all know the tan JK got in BV2 and all laughed at it as it sort of became a meme. Because he got a weird tan line, the members made fun of him and it was evident that it was mostly because of the weird tan line and not for getting tanned at all. However, when I watched the new BV, I was honestly kind of really weirded out by the amount of sunscreen Tae, Jungkook and Jimin would put on. Jimin pointed out that Jungkook got a weird tan last time so he should put sunblock on. Whoever has watched the new season can tell that he is teasing - albiet playfully - and then jungkook proceeds to put sunblock on every surface visible.
It's the same when Tae gets to Malta. The scene where he could be a mime with how white his face was because of the sheer amount of sunscreen he was putting on. In episode 2 or 3 I think, Jimin tells jungkook that he has already gotten darker. It's at the restaurant they are eating at so it might be second episode. Throughout the series, they just put on butload of sunscreen like it's going to stop them from tanning. I'm guessing Namjoon doesn't know otherwise he would clown them I think lmao that sunscreen DOESN'T stop you from tanning. It literally just filters the UV rays so the sun isn't going to cause damage and diseases like skin cancer. It does NOT stop production of melanin so regardless, you still get tanned. But we can all tell that that's precisely the reason they keep on slapping sunscreen - to prevent tanning.
Jungkook and Yoongi both wear dark clothes, covering their whole bodies to prevent from getting tanned. I moreso think that's why jungkook wore full sleeves. With Yoongi, maybe not so much but maybe he also wore full sleeves to avoid tanning. I don't see another reason he would be wearing dark full sleeve clothes in the sweltering heat. Namjoon goes out and buys sleevless shirts, Hoseok wear short sleeves, shorts, flowy shirts. Lile you can tell that Namjoon doesn't give a shit about getting tanned and niether does hoseok.
What strikes me the most is that despite Jimin making these comments, he wears shorts, doesn't slap on a gallon of sunscreen because I have noticed he doesn't tan as quickly or as much. We all remember debute Jimin. He wore sleevless and was tan probably because at that time, he was a trainee, went to school, etc. Now he is considerably paler because his wardrobe has changed and sometimes your complexion DOES shift. Mine was much darker when i was young and now im a few shades lighter but still very tan.
Now let's talk about their selfies. All selfies they upload, you can tell that they have either chosen the filter that is the lightest or their exposure is super high. Don't come at me that they are naturally pale or that they don't use filters because even when they are outside, you. can TELL that they have used a filter. It really, really hurts me guys. As I imagine other armies. I may sound dramatic but it is the truth. Seeing men who are my rolemodels, not embrace their own skin because of the societal norms of what is considered beautiful and what is not. It's kind of contradictory to their message and I hope Namjoon can educate them a little more on the impact they are having by these subtle things they do.
I'm not calling Jimin bad, or anyone else in the group. I love then dearly and BECAUSE I love them, I want them to be better people. The recent picture Jungkook posted in Fancafe. Have you guys seen how whitewashed that is? Like why do they appear so gorgeously tan and golden in the US? Any show outside of Korea they have gone to, they can be seen in their true skin colours. In Korea, the culture is to just put a wash to their cameras so everyone appears lighter than they are. BTS stands for not following the societal norm, to change things we are not happy with. Just because it's the culture, doesn't mean it is right. It is colourism. I was fortunate enough to have a family who empowered me and made me feel comfortable in my own skin. But not everyone has that.
Especially in Korea, Brazil, India, Indonesia and other developing counties who have these farmful beauty standards as a replacement for equal rights and opportunities to climb up the social hierarchy. I'm not claiming to know everything but i hope you get the gist of it. And I hope they can learn and move away from these ideas that lighter is beautiful. I'm sure many people feel the same way. If I am to criticise other groups for colourism, I want my own ult group to change.
I am also not saying lighter skin is bad or that BTS should be always tan. Skin colours change according to the weather we all know. But what I am saying is completely different.
That's all thanks for reading if you did. Check out these videos for more context.

The Great (I'm thinking of watching it), Lyra/Will, Zari Tazari.
The great
(Yous hould watch. It's very fun, imo)
Favorite character: Catherine, but I also have a soft spot for Marial. Also, Peter is VERY entertaining, but most definetly, not a fave, lol
Least Favorite character: Orlo kinda annoys me
5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): Catherine/power, Catherine/Peter, Peter/George/Grigor, Catherine/bears :)) And I suppose I did like Catherine/Leo nice in the begining, now it bores me.
Character I find most attractive: Marial
Character I would marry: Also, Marial. Very practical, kind, but ruthless
Character I would be best friends with: honestly, I think I would get along with Catherine
a random thought: I looove that they threw historical accuracy out of the window, in the begining, but if they made Peter the Great this Peter's father I hope they will keep PtG's wife's name aka Peter's mom Catherine. It will take the mommy issues up to eleven ;)
An unpopular opinion: I mean, I lile Peter/Catherine A Lot
my canon OTP: ....I will not be a comolete b***ch, so I'll say Catherine/power (rn I am watching an ep where she seems to believe power behind the throne is better than being on the throne and....I hope she wakes up soon)
Non-canon OTP: Marial/power (I hope it becomes canon)
most badass character:...Marial
pairing I am not a fan of: Catherine/Leo
character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): none, but I hope Cat's "power through manipulatipn is gr8" phase doesn't last
favourite friendship: Marial and Catherine
character I want to adopt or be adopted by: I want to teach Cat a few life lessons but she'll probs learn by herself
Lyra/Will
when of if I started shipping it: the very first pages of TSK
my thoughts: I luff them. Esoecially their ending. It's perfect, especially for such an young couple (I have headcanons)
What makes me happy about them: everything :))
What makes me sad about them: nothing. I adore them and everything about them. Tho, i fear the sequel
things done in fanfic that annoys me: never read a fic about them
things I look for in fanfic:....to be canon compliant
My kinks: nothing, they are too young for it
Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other:  I like the idea of them meeting new people and having new loves
My happily ever after for them: canon was one, imo, but as I said, I have headcanons
Zari Tarazi
How I feel about this character: I luff her!!!
All the people I ship romantically with this character:  Constantine, Charlie, Gideon, Sara
My non-romantic OTP for this character: happiness, money and Behrad
My unpopular opinion about this character: I mean, I ship her with John :))
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: the last episode made me very happy and I hope the trend keeps going in season 6
my het ship: John/Zari
my fem/slash ship: Charlie/Zari
my OTP: Starblazer
my OT3: Zari/Charlie/Sara or Zari/Constantine/Gideon
my cross over ship: since we spoke about "The Great": Zari/Catherine
my kink: Zari being happy. Also, multiple Zaris
a head cannon fact: hmmm, I am bad at this. I feel like she would really hate Batman if she ever met him. Idk why
my gender bend: I don't have one. Can't imagine her as a man, sorry

So basically there's butch and femme for lesbians, and that's one thing. Then there's butch and femme for mlm, and that's a whole different thing? Lile they look like the same word but are actually different labels and identities in context?
That is my understanding yes. I think they’re a also mostly latinx and black mlm exclusive terms. Trans men, especially white trans men, using the label and applying it in a way that seems to be an attempt to mimic lesbian (/wlw depending on who you ask) sub-cultures is bad. However black/latinx mlm who connect to and understand their sexuality/gender through the drag ball context using butch/femme as a part of their identity is very different and it’s own historically separate thing.Edit; thank you to anon for correcting me before! I apologize for saying it was a culture of all mlmoc. It appears I was wrong Anon, butch queen is the drag ball identifier, butch as a stand alone noun is indeed just for lesbians.
