Somehow Palpatine Returned
Ok I had a hilarious thought and I need to share it with all of you. I don’t normally venture into the Sequels, for all that I have been a FinnPoe and a FinnPoeRey shipper for years, or into anything close to canon,  but I want to share this with you.
Picture if you will the moment where Poe is telling the audience that ‘Somehow Palpatine has returned’. Ponder for a moment Obi Wan Kenobi, in the Force, at that moment. The look on his face.
We are going with, somehow, Palpatine managed to hide his real identity from the Force Ghosts so they did not know he was still alive.
We are also, from my own personal headcanon, going with the idea that Obi Wan severely dislikes (as close to hate as he is capable of) Palpatine and has for almost fifty years at this point.  Like 90% of the horrible things that happened in Obi Wan’s adult life can be traced back to Palpatine (both directly and indirectly).
At the moment that Poe reveals that Palpatine is back, in the Force Obi Wan starts swearing. He starts swearing in every language he knows. He starts mixing languages in his swears. He starts inventing new curses and new languages to be able to express his displeasure at the news.
Obi Wan Kenobi is about ready to materialize into the mortal plane for the sole purpose of ripping Palpatine’s arm off and beating him with it (in a way that violates all manner of physics and Force).
Slightly to the Left of Obi Wan, Anakin Skywalker is staring at his grandson in mild horror going ‘why are you…this’.
The Force starts manifesting people to calm Obi Wan Kenobi down (For fear that Obi Wan will break…everything). First Force Sensitives and Jedi he cared for, then Clones, then non force sensitives, even a few old enemies.
Note 1: Maul appears at one point and screams ‘Kenobi’ for a really long time, to the point that everyone else (other than Obi Wan) looks at him. He shrugs and goes ‘I just wanted to get your attention’ then goes to sit down next to Satine so they can both score Obi Wan’s curses while splitting a bottle of Force Wine.
Note 2: Maul and Satine have a weirdly cordial relationship for being a pacifist government official ex girlfriend of a Jedi and the Sith Warlord that murdered her in front of said Jedi, but they have found in the afterlife that they both get joy from the face Obi wan makes when they argue about something inane with him. Also they may be each scoring Obi Wan’s swears (with the occasional addition of Yoda, Dooku, Ventress, and Padme) but they are using different metrics so their scores are vastly different at all time (Maul is scoring on Creativity, Violence, and the number of organs violated; Satine is scoring on creativity, number of languages used, how poetic/rhythmic, and how well it translates into basic).
A battalion's worth of clones are arrayed around Obi Wan, taking notes. Quinlan Vos appears and vanishes in rapid succession as he helps to calm then egg Obi Wan on (at which point the Force yanks him away only to be convinced to put him back). Cody tries to calm Obi Wan down for precisely three minutes, then he realizes what has Obi Wan so steamed. At that point he goes ‘no this reaction is completely valid’ and starts discussing how one would make some of those curses a reality (as they do violate physics, the Force, and human structural integrity. Also Palpatine does not even have some of those organs) with Qui Gonn Jinn, who is deeply amused but happy to bond with his pseudo son in law.
Plo Koon wanders through and announces that he is adopting all of the new stormtroopers both dead and living (in the mortal plane Finn, Rose, and others suddenly get the feeling that they have been absconded with and have no idea why).
In one corner Anakin, still despairing over Kylo Ren/Ben Solo and his life choices, is having an ongoing yet supremely awkward family reunion with one or more of the following at any given point and time: his wife, whom he had a hand in killing; his daughters adoptive parents, whom he helped murder; his daughter’s husband, who he tortured, froze in carbonite, and sold to a bounty hunter; and his step brother and step sister in law that rose his son on a planet that Anakin hated, whom he only didn’t torture because he never remembered they existed; Assorted Jedi who he had been close to, whom he might of had a hand in murdering.
That one corner has so much passive aggressiveness that it is insane.  A lot of Anakin asking out loud why Kylo Ren is…like that with one or more of the previously listed people going ‘Maybe if his grandfather didn’t become a Sith, Ben wouldn’t have gotten the idea’. Which is both slightly unfair, as Anakin had been dead by the time Ben Solo was born, but also funny as anything.
Also no one in that corner was actually discussing their elephant in the room, which was Anakin turned out to be THE PROBLEM for two decades.
There is an ever growing parade of everyone Obi Wan has ever met being thrown at him by the Force because the Force effectively went: SHIT that is a lot of anger. Deflect.Deflect.

Tell me: Is He Gay or In a Sherwani?
Imposition of western norms in fandom analysis of Asian characters
With the rising popularity of Indian cinema sparked by the recent success of RRR on international platforms as well as the easy availability of multiple streaming services, in addition to the appearance of South Asian characters in prominent roles in western, particularly US media, I've begun to see some concerning 'analysis' posts online. So I thought I'd address something I found common in most of these takes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Guys, characterizing your blorbos as queer is great and all, love it, but you're making a fundamental mistake by making their clothing choices the foundation for your queer headcanons, especially when it comes to male characters. Do not apply existing western cultural ideas regarding male clothing onto South Asian characters and their dressing please.
The vast majority of the clothes being used by people in various online spaces as 'evidence' of a character being queer(gay or bi mostly) are just normal Indian clothing for men, like daily wear. A top being pink or a character's wardrobe being mostly pastel means absolutely nothing...cos Indian clothing tends to be colourful in general and the tendency to ascribe colours masculine and feminine qualities is considerably less in the subcontinent. I'm not saying it doesn't exist, but generally not a concern.
There's also this pervasive idea that colourful clothing = flamboyance = queer and that itself is something many people have already pointed as a deeply flawed way of thinking and a stereotype. Furthermore, even if you do lean into the archetype of queer men being flamboyant, subscribing to the 'stereotypes exist for a reason don't they?' school of thought perhaps, there's also the fact that ideas of what is considered flamboyant change dramatically across different cultures. What is 'flamboyant' for someone might just be normal for others. Like maybe pink or purple or yellow might be considered too much, unmanly, emasculating etc in the US or something but they're just perfectly normal colours for men to wear in many, many cultures.
It's the 'Is he Gay or European?' principle. Did you characterize this Indian character (or any South Asian character really) as queer because of their canonical behaviour and portrayal, or did you just see their clothing and decide they're queer because being well groomed and having a colourful wardrobe is a character trait you exclusively ascribe to being queer?
Like guys, I like Chaipunk like the rest of you, but if you consider Pavitr queer just because his costume is a lot fancier than the others' (An actual take I've seen multiple times) without taking into account his cultural background....¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Let me make this clear, I don't think people need a ten page analysis to imagine their fave as queer. Headcanoning a character as queer can have any reason ranging from 'I said so and so it is' to 'this is my light character analysis that makes a masters thesis look shabby' and they're all valid and an integral part of the fandom experience. What I am annoyed at are these so-called 'well-researched' theories that did not make the slightest effort to look into South Asian culture and simply transposed their western bias onto Indian media and confidently make flat out wrong judgements and mislead other people. Clothing based sexual identity determinism is the least of it. That I can at least understand through the lens of a habitual process built through years of analyzing crumbs of queer representation available only through queer coded characters and symbolism such as clothing choices being the only way to see an aspect of yourself portrayed in an aggressively heteronormative media ecosystem. I do that too, because media is tragically heteronormative everywhere. But the rest? Its just straight up misinformation and misrepresentation touted as truth.
Its the same with relationships between men. There are plenty of cultures where skinship between men is not unusual and dynamics and nuances tend to be vastly different from western representations of male friendships. In xianxia and wuxia fandoms you can see this same problem in a different font when outsiders, most often the western side of the fandom, try to apply their own standards and morals onto the original work and try to interpret it through a lens it was never supposed to be interpreted through in the first place, except maybe for comparative analysis. This practice itself isn't a major problem, its natural for people to apply what is familiar to them to try and understand something new. But when this is also accompanied by them foisting their personal interpretation and analysis as the 'correct' one and trying to impose it on the fandom as a whole, it escalates into a powder keg situation as you can imagine.
Again, not saying that western parts of fandoms are the root of all evil or anything like that, gods know how toxic netizens can be. But in this specific situation, where people try to impose western ideals on to non-western content and assumes the universalism of their own principles and value systems? Indeed an issue to be addressed.

for the questions list you reblogged ,so here’s my questions for both harry and tom . 5,6,11,16
Thanks for asking! Here’s a novel. 🫶
5. Best personality trait
Harry
His intuition. More specifically, his character judgment is up there for me. I love how he instantly bonds with someone like Ron, who is completely ordinary and thoroughly honest; and dislikes Draco, who is an arrogant snot. His intuition makes him great at DADA, but it also makes him great at surrounding himself with good, honest, down to earth people, with integrity and courage.
Tom
Nobody loved him, so he chose to love himself. That’s a demonstration of unparalleled resilience, and why I love his character so much. Nothing can wilt him down, not even the painful and undignified existence he had as a parasitic specter. When he remarked to Wormtail that he, Voldemort, repulsed him (while also basically calling him a pathetic coward rofl), he wasn’t pitying himself. He truly has no shame. His love for himself and disregard for others, and ability to act dignified and wholly himself, is something I’m obsessed with.
6. Worst personality trait
Harry
He’s a bit of a shit talker, and he can be rash with it. He accuses people of great crimes with pretty strong certainty, because—usually—his intuition is dependable. Sometimes he’s right (Draco was a Death Eater), sometimes he’s wrong (Hagrid didn’t open the CoS, Snape didn’t steal the Stone, etc).
I’m just saying, given the right opportunity, he could destroy someone’s reputation.
But also I love this personality trait lmao.
Tom
Nearly everything about him is pretty awful. His WORST, not in terms of scale but in my personal opinion, is the absolutely embarrassing narcissistic rants. Reread his scenes in CoS and GoF, and tell me he isn’t so batshit insane . . . it’s a wonder anyone follows him.
11. Faceclaim for the role
Harry
I form my own mental image of characters, and they can change depending on the fic. Canon!Harry, in my head, has the fresh, boyish sort of look that Froylan Gutierrez has, but of course dorkier, with imperfect teeth, asymmetry in the features.
Tom
Again, I have no specific face claim, my view of him is particular. Of the popular ones, I think Christian Coulson is, objectively, the best, but I don’t see Tom looking anything like that.
My pfp is a model I sociopathically edited to get close to my mental image of him, and it is adjacent. I find a lot of models fit him at certain angles, but none are quite right, and none British-looking enough.
16. Deepest darkest secret they won’t even admit to themselves
Harry
I’m just a lowly Tomarry shipper, so, you know.
To what extent, I don’t know, but I headcanon Harry has warped sexual feelings toward Tom Riddle/Voldemort. I think the Horcrux, the mind-body connection they share, makes it unlikely he would go through his hormonal teenage years without borderline traumatizing dreams. I don’t think it’s enjoyable for him, more like OCD-level intrusive thoughts.
Fun way to make sense of how many times he observes Tom Riddle as handsome, anyway. <:
Tom
I don’t share the common belief that becoming Voldemort was his way of becoming his ‘true self’; I see it as a crutch, cleaving himself from his origins to feel comfortable being himself. I don’t think his head ever stopped turning at the name "Tom," or that he, in his heart, ever felt he stopped being the person we met in HBP.
Even in Deathly Hallows, as he walks up to Harry’s crib, he cringes at the crying, recalling how he hated it at the orphanage. He marked Harry as his equal because he’s a half-blood. He still spoke about his father, even at his rebirth.
Lord Voldemort was a fiction he invented to protect himself, to give himself significance and value in a world that didn’t want him in it, from the day he was born. To me, acceptance and validation of this fiction, is validation of a deeply disordered and destructive coping mechanism; I see nothing poetic, attractive, or empowering about him, or anyone, rejecting mortality and humanity, which is what Lord Voldemort represents to him. Tom Riddle is a fallible mortal boy; Lord Voldemort, on the other hand, can live forever, can be himself, must not hide behind a polite voice and deferential low-born posture.
And so, I don’t think he is willing to admit to himself, that it was all an imaginative ploy made-up by a deeply lonely, neglected, disregarded little boy who wanted so much more than it felt like he, with his status, could ever have.

Okay no so I need to get this out of my head and what better way than to plop it into somebody else's lap so that they can add their two cents: I am convinced that the Sully family, at some point, would have an intensely divided war amongst themselves following an argument regarding what pet to get. If it was a human AU, then you best bet they'd be split down the middle on whether to get a dog or cat.
Neteyam is fully in the cat corner and has compiled a hefty amount of research devoted specifically to how to care for/own a cat, along with all of the benefits of having a cat vs. having a dog (for some reason I feel like when Neteyam goes he goes all in or else why bother? He's the oldest in a line up of future deviants, he has no time for half-assed attempts). He already has a name picked out for it and everything (Mittens, because for some reason I picture him being both basic and valid at the same time) and assures his parents that his choice is the best one to go through with.
Kiri is team dog, though she would settle for a cat. A dog would just be so much better for all the outdoors-y shit she and her family does. A morning walk? You can take the dog! Going to the beach? You can take the dog! Camping? You can take the dog! Sure, cats are pretty self-sufficient, but do you really want to have to spend time wondering what you're going to do with the cat while planning every trip?
Lo'ak, surprisingly, is team cat. Why exactly? He couldn't tell you. He just likes their "fuck off" vibe (okay and maybe their fluffy fur and cute little paws and how they meow and how they lie in a sweet little ball of fluff and have you seen how they yawn oh my Eywa their eyes close so adorably and, oh fuck it, he admits it he's in love just get the cat already).
Tuk is team dog and it isn't even close. Dogs are do cute! Dogs are so friendly! Dogs would definitely play with her whenever she wanted and she could train their dog to do the cutest little tricks! It would be her best friend and love her forever!
Neytiri is team dog. She just feels like dogs connect more to their families than cats do and she thinks that the main thing a person should want in a pet is for them to become integrated deeply into the family and all they do. You can take a dog far more places than you can a cat, too, which is also preferable (much like in Kiri's opinion).
Jake is, strangely enough, team cat. I have this little headcanon that he and Tommy spent a good deal of their life in the foster system in this huge city and throughout the many miserable homes they were placed in their only constant was the plethora of stray cats skulking around the city (that has long since stopped trying to get the problem under control because I said so this it my fantasy thank you very much). I also like to imagine that his mother died when they were very young and one of the only memories he has of her is this one time when she was crouching down to try and coax a cat into taking some of her tuna sandwich so he's always just had a soft spot for them because one of the only things he remembers about her is that she must have at least liked cats. Anyways, there's just something about a cat's quiet comfort that he digs. They're warm and small and just feel amazing to hold (plus, he's a sucker for the purring maybe if dogs could purr there would be more of a contest). They already have four rambunctious children (plus Spider whenever Norm fucks off to wherever his research takes him next) and he's not about to get a dog and take a shot at five.
I imagine it gets so out of hand that pretty much everyone around them places bets on which side will win. Ao'nung has zero faith in Lo'ak, so he's betting on team dog. Tsireya has a cat of her own so she's biased, team cat. Neytiri terrifies Norm, team dog. Tonowari has to side with his bro despite being a dog person, team cat. Ronal refuses to participate in this (team cat to spite Neytiri). Kiri has the Spider advantage, team dog.
Who wins? Fuck if I know. I say let chaos reign, I hope they never come to a decision.
ANON. THANK YOU FOR THIS GIFT HOLY SHIT. I AM ~OBSESSED~ WITH THE MINDMELDING WE ARE ALL DOING.
Okay, but consider this?? A dog AND a cat. Mo'at suggests it because it's the obvious solution and they are all dumb for not thinking of it earlier. So then they get a puppy and a kitten and it ends up being one of those fucked up situations where the cat turns out a little more dog like than usual and the dog gets a little bit more cat from the situation. All of a sudden they have a dog to take camping and on RV road trips and hiking and to the beach, and aLSO A FUCKING CAT. Mittens is basically free range dude, Neteyam straps the life vest on the cat and they go canoeing and shit. He and Lo'ak make fun of Kiri because her dog (River) barely fits in the canoe with her, and whenever he jumps out he capsizes her. Mittens can jump after him with little to no disruptions. It's all fun and games until River's trying to get up into Neteyam's canoe right after.
The cat and dog very much enjoy the Sully (and Spider and Mo'at)'s family cross country road trip. River sleeps with Kiri and to Neteyam's utter disappointment Mittens sleeps with Mo'at. Jake likes to throw Mittens overboard while he's throwing Tuk when they get to the sailing and wakeboarding part of their journey, and Mittens LOVEs it. He's the most broken cat of all time. Neytiri has a special raw food diet going for both animals, and they are both so obscenely well trained it's not even funny. They are better trained than Lo'ak, Kiri says. It also takes Lo'ak and Spider that entire summer roadtrip to teach River to skateboard so they can make a viral instagram account. They have to start all over when it comes to surfing, and Ao'nung is disturbingly dedicated to helping even though he "hates" them.

boo, you’ve inspired me a lot and I fr want to start writing Michael imagines but I’m scared that I’m not gonna have motivation, no one’s gonna read them, and that I’m just gonna flop completely 😭😭
can you pretty please give me some advice if you can bc babes idk 😭🙏
Omg that’s wonderful!! Don’t be scared, the mj fanfic side of the fandom was literally non existent on here when I first posted my fics and now look there’s more of us <3 We need more mj writers!!
Listen you really have to get the thoughts of “no one’s gonna read them, they’re gonna flop blah blah” out your head, and I know it’s hard but trust me the best way to KILL your motivation is by relying on external validation. Of course I’m not gonna sit here and say that people reblogging and commenting on fics won’t give you more motivation to write but that can’t be the only reason/source. So try to remind yourself that you’re doing this for yourself, for fun, as a hobby etc.
Now when it comes to writing advice, first find out what style of writings you’re most comfortable with and length. Do you think you’ll prefer to write a few thousand words or shorter fanfictions? Do you want to write one-shots, headcanons or drabbles? Try to experiment more or less with all to see what you’re best at.
Then, if a blank page intimidates you (I relate) try to just word vomit all your ideas/things you want to mention in your fic, like a little summary. To make this even less intimidating use the text to speech button and just start yapping. Then you’ll be able to use that as some sort of guideline.
While writing try to include both mikes and readers/ocs perspective, even if you’re writing from the first point of view. (Btw I’d recommend using the second or third pov, but you can do whatever feels more natural) this will make the readers feel more connected to the story and want to continue reading. Also don’t waste time by being too descriptive about things that don’t add much to the story, there’s no need to describe the outfits, or morning routines before your characters meet up yk, unless it’s necessary/integral to the plot.
When it comes to writing dialogue (if you’re gonna go for Mike) try to recall his interviews and the way he speaks, use similar language and even phrases/words to make the conversation feel more natural. Trust me most people hate when the dialogues seem unrealistic and fake, it shouldn’t feel like reading about your own oc who just has mikes appearance and name, if that makes sense.

Hi! What are some of your favorite Obidala headcanons?
So true confession time? I'm terrible with head canons. Or at least I feel like I am? Not sure. But if I reframe it as 'commonalities' in how I approach the characters in my writing, I can give you a few. Hopefully this is sort of what you're looking for ...
There was something between them first -- So far at least almost every Obidala story I've constructed, whether published or not, has an element where Obi-Wan and Padme met/connected first. Exactly what that connection looks likes varies greatly, but it's pretty universally there in my story telling and often a pivotal element of how they relate to each other. The only exception to this might be the Manny AU. I'm pretty sure they didn't meet in that one ... but stay tuned. (Interestingly this doesn't apply to my obianidala stuff ... don't know why)
They love Anakin -- This feels sort of obvious, but I'm still going to say it because it's so universal to how I write them and how they relate to each other. Much like point one the nature and character of that love and its impact on them is highly variable depending on the piece, but its so integral to both their characters and their relationship that "placing Anakin' in the piece is almost always on the first things I do when I'm spinning a story in my head.
They Fight -- My obidala can go at it. They're not mean, but they are principled and passionate and do not always see eye to eye. The result being ... they fight. Sometimes its just light sparring, but they can and do tear great gaping chunks out of each other because in many ways they see each other as strong enough to take it and trust each other enough to be honest in a way I don't think either quite manages with Anakin. But sometimes that honesty is ... explosive.
Their sexuality is flexible -- I rarely use labels in my writing or my tagging partly because I don't feel comfortable that I will use them correctly, but moreso because its not important enough to the overarching storyline to feel like a valid or necessary tag. But in my head both Obi-Wan and Padme are people who can and do become sexually attracted to the personality/spirit of an individual first and their physical qualities second. And that translates to having no strong preference as to gender when choosing a partner. I tend to write Padme as being more physically passionate and driven by a desire for that kind of intimacy and connection, where my Obi-Wan is a little more 'neutral'. He can and does enjoy sex, he's had it, and will have a one night stand if he feels a connection, or 'companionable' sex with a good friend (I have a scene upcoming in Trap with Quinlan that speaks to that as part of their history). But he's really not driven by it. He won't seek sex out for the sake of sex alone. What turns him on is the emotional connection. So the man could go months or even years and simply not have sex just because he had other things to do and there was really no opportunity he found that interesting.
Padme has undiagnosed ADHD -- So this is a very closely held personal head canon that I hesitate to share, but the more I work with Padme the more I feel like it fits. She's capable of amazing things. Principled and indefatigable are words that were coined for her. And yet some of her choices seem to make no sense. That impulsivity combined with her almost hyper fixation on Anakin and saving him. Then there's that incredible duality in RotS where she can feel competent and controlled and commanding in her professional world and yet at the slightest indication of Anakin's displeasure in her home life she seeks to soothe. That rejection sensitivity, along with that inability to truly understand/face that the 'someday' they've been trying to put off has come due ... that all feels very true to my lived experience/struggles, and while I'll probably never put it central to a story, those elements and character traits certainly inform some of how I write her.
Bail Organa is the #1 obidala shipper -- that man is such a stan ... really one of the very first things I wrote for Trap was to take the exchange between Obi-Wan and Bail in the cave during OWK and spin it with the idea that Bail knew about him and Padme ... it actually works pretty well. But seriously, if Bail shows up in my stories, I can guarantee you he will be pro-obidala

There are genuinely quite a few things about the show that I love (and am pleasantly surprised by), and I've been stewing over/second guessing my one prominent complaint because I want to have a measured response and I'm self-aware enough to recognize that I am in no way capable of being normal about Cassian Andor. BUT
I honestly find the characterization pretty dubious at points? And not in a "this doesn't match my headcanons" sort of way, because I fully expected that, but in a "did we watch the same movie???" sort of way. And also in a "listen I fully understand the impulse to take a known character and flip his personality on its head for the sake of an engaging character arc when you're writing a prequel, but tbqh I find it a pretty formulaic and clumsy approach and I think you'd end up with something a lot richer and more nuanced if you put thirty seconds of thought into this as opposed to just. playing an uno reverse card" sort of way. I'm cool with having my expectations subverted but as I've said before I do think that one measure of a good adaptation is a certain level of - if not necessarily strict faithfulness - integrity in its treatment of the OG story, and while there are points where the characterization choices made in Andor feel surprising but harmless there are others that imo kinda undermine the characterization and themes in Rogue One - and carelessly so, rather than in any interesting or deliberately subversive ways.
And like I said I've been keeping that to myself - at the very least I would like to find time to write out my gripes in a more specific and concrete form - but then I remembered that particularly boneheaded review of RO that essentially said Cassian was a bargain-bin Han Solo with none of the charm and how I full on snort-laughed because while there are other valid criticisms to make, literally what on earth made you think ANYONE involved in this film was aiming for Han Solo there lmao critcism is dead.
And then I looked at the Han Solo character arc and heretofore nowhere to be found Han-Solo-esque character traits they've given TV Cassian and sighed and stopped second-guessing myself, because - while this post itself is still me waving my hands around in frustration rather than making that more specific and measured argument - I'm right and I should say it.

Not to be a person on here but i say with with absolute genuine intention to help. Aside of the representation angle it really doesnt matter if a ship is canon to be a valid ship. You can still ship it? Maybe i am just cynical bc i grew up with no queer rep whatsoever so if a ship was canon or not didnt matter either way, but i am a bit sad to see people believe they cant ship something bc it isnt canon.
Like i said just trying to be gnuinely encouraging and disregarding what a step it would be to have opnely queer characters on screen and queer couples. Guess i am just cynical like that and believe that queer representation is a marketing strat in many cases and just me being so used to queerbaiting i dont fall for it.
No no, I get what you mean. I'm assuming this is about me being salty about certain developments from the monster high show?
Don't worry, I'm not abandoning my ships because they aren't canon, I don't think I could do that if I tried. Perhaps I hadn't been clear enough in that regard. Besides it's not like I grew up with queer rep either. I'm actually rather used to my ships not being canon, I'm just a lot more involved in this fandom than other ones, so it's hitting me a little harder this time (plus, most of the characters I shipped in the past never ended up getting romantic arcs, that made it easier).
I absolutely think people shouldn't let canon discourage them, what matters is that your ships bring you joy or comfort. That's it. I actually really hope no one else in this fandom throws their ships aside because of these things, that'd be a shame. Fandoms flourish with headcanons and making what the source material is putting down your own, connecting it to your experiences and interests!
I've actually seen some people feel afraid to share headcanons in fear that someone will come in and complain that canon doesn't support the idea. It's really disappointing to see.
I do think ships becoming canon can matter a lot, specifically if they're creating more rep. But it's not absolutely necessary.
Feeling like queer rep is often just a marketing strategy is... understandable. Queerbating (though I feel like that word has somewhat lost its meaning) has happened far too often and left a lot of us jaded. Still, if the rep is actually there instead of just getting teased, and it's properly integrated, feeling believable and genuine? Then I'm going to be glad to see it, whether the original reason was marketing or not.
Thanks for your input anon, I'm hoping I was able to clarify some things, and perhaps remind anyone who is feeling discouraged by canon that what you make of the things you love is up to you.

its weird being kin with a character who is so commonly headcanoned to have NPD (while not having npd), and then having NPD now like man i Didnt have npd i was riddled with a whole other set of mental health issues lol
"omgg leo isnt DEPRESSED he has NPD and just needs support from his family to validate himself!!" like good for you live your life but also No i Didnt i acted as the "face man" because a) i didnt have a Niche in the team and b) nobody else really Was the face man like i didnt have a *role* aside from just being The Fourth Turtle like, donnie had his tech and raph was built like a tank and also Is Raph i mean cmon, and mikey had his fucken Razzmatazz and i was just sorta There Leo, blue guy, red eared slider, liked instant noodles and cold drinks and warm blankets and sorta just not really A Part of it like why do you think i took up being the fucking medic? so id be like!! useful!!! so id have something to do to say i was helping!! do you know how taxing it is to go and set bones and be the one to help your brothers after they have their shit rocked by like. meatsweats or something? fuck like im not MAD at them but it was like. a stressful thing. but i HAD nothing else! i wasnt leader until way later on and no matter what raph would always be the Unofficial Leader. my portals didnt compare to any of the shit my brothers could do. like "oh yeah hey i can make fucking portals" meanwhile raph can a) FUCKING DUPLICATE HIMSELF and b) make a projection of himself thats like 5 times his size mikey can a) THROW BOATS??? AND BUILDINGS???? WITH HIS FUCKING NUNCHUCKS???? b) yk. make inter-dimensional portals so not even my PORTALS are unique c) FLOAT. EVENTUALLY. d) like. pyro-related stuff i guess. and donnie's so fucking smart he doesnt even NEED mystic shit!! his tech-bo is like, yaknow, EVERYTHING YOUD WANT out of something called a "tech-bo", he set up all of our lair's tech, he made the heaters, he made AI's with the same capabilities of a human brain, and then add on MYSTICS to that???? holy SHIT. then theres dad who can just Kick Ass apparently despite being a tiny rat-man. april is the most resourceful person i know, casey and casey jr. are both STUPIDLY good with hand-to-hand combat because of fucking course they are. barry is a) physically capable somehow, b) has his stupid fucking vines and c) is an ALCHEMIST. even fucking sunita is more interesting than me!!! like what the shit! the most I contribute is being a fucking pest!!! my unfunny-streak has CONTINUED into Now, and im just as uninteresting and all this is stupid because draxum made all of us WITH A PURPOSE. the tank, the strategist, the analyst and the mediator. raph, me, don and mikey. i know, factually im not "without purpose". im part of our stupid, biologically-designed unit. but i cant fucking help myself. what the point of a strategist if the analyst is smart enough to fix everything if something goes wrong. what good is a strategist if the mediator can, again, THROW. BUILDINGS. what fucking GOOD is a STRATEGIST if the TANK can protect everyone!! "oh but leo! you trapped Him in the prison dimension" it wouldnt have been a PROBLEM if I hadnt let them out in the FIRST PLACE. it doesnt MATTER that i didnt know what it was! it still happened BECAUSE OF ME. donnie had to fucking, idk, INTEGRATE with THE FUCKING TECHNODROME cause of me! mikey fried himself cause of ME! dad and april got hurt cause of me! raph got fucking kidnapped and infected BECAUSE OF ME! if i wasnt a factor, the invasion wouldnt have happened at all, and my whole "planning to trap Prime in the prison dimension + self sacrifice" thing wouldnt have even HAD TO HAPPEN, so that point is WORTHLESS! i am a """strategist""" that only serves to hurt his unit. and what kind of fucking strategist is that.
-leo (probably from Lemonade Leak i guess) 🔷⚔🌌. sorry for this ask, mpc. probs more venty than you bargained for.

So, I couldn’t help wondering just how uncertain do you think Bernie was about contacting Serena after her ‘rescue’? She said Serena was the only one she could face, but she must have seriously wondered if Serena had ‘moved on’, given that she had been declared dead. She knew that others found Serena attractive (Robbie and she who must not be named) to name but two, so it must have occurred to her.
Or do you think that the vow they made to each other when they parted ways, about having each other’s back if anyone hurt them would mean that she knew whatever Serena’s circumstances she would always want to help?
Oh, anon, I feel like I was born for this. Thank you so much for sending this in because I cannot get enough of how angsty this situation is that we've been given even before our two ladies are reunited.
My gut feeling is that Bernie asked for Serena as a bit of a Hail Mary. I think it doesn't come down to much other than, if she has anyone there, she has to have Serena. I think out of everyone in her life, she probably has the most unsaid things to Serena, in a way that she doesn't with her kids. And she'd definitely not want her kids to see her the way she is. I think she trusts Serena implicitly, not just as an ex but as a doctor. And I think when Bernie was found, she very much needed a doctor.
So at that point, she's probably (definitely) drugged up, vulnerable, and still able to recite Serena's mobile number from memory - leftover from phoning Serena from any phone she could at that places she was at like Sudan and Nairobi - and all she wants is the woman who has "more humanity and integrity than anyone she had ever met".
Worrying about the pressure it might/would/does place on Serena comes when Bernie's told they've contacted Serena. I also don't think Bernie knows she's been declared dead until then as well. So it's a whole host of feelings because she hasn't just been missing... she's been dead. I have a whole host of headcanons about Bernie once rescued and hospitalised, but I'll leave that for now.
The second part of your question: whether Bernie might think she's moved on? I think it's a valid thought. It would have been 18 months since they'd seen one another. Even if there was nobody on the scene, Bernie knows of Serena's deep roots in Holby (she wouldn't know that Serena had left Holby about 6 months previously) and her responsibility to Jason and her family etc.
So I'm sure there is a long stretch of time where Bernie has to build up the courage and tell Serena that she doesn't have to stay with her, especially if she has someone waiting for her. I think Bernie expected Serena to move on and find that "right animal". Not knowing of course that, as soon as Serena hears Bernie is alive, she has no plans whatsoever to leave that woman's side again.
The vow was one-sided: "If someone hurts you, I'll be on the first plane home". Bernie said it, I don't think she expected anything back. Certainly, no one foresaw this. And in the episode, Serena didn't say anything back. Ultimately, I think that Bernie asking for Serena was an incredibly brave thing to do, but also an incredibly hopeful thing to do as well.

Complaining abt tumblrsexymen being all the 'same'-ish conventionally attractive white/white coded character is a valid critique+nitpick if ever I saw one. It's still amazes me that Sans won the tumblreman hunger games considering he's both of skeleton decent and not a beanpole. Believe me, I love tumblr sexymen and that there are just WAY too many white and/or white coded guys in there. Diversity is important. Considering how many of them are also some scale of dangerous ppl which is then excused away by fans because of course it is, it is concerning how many Notzis get the "but he's complex"-treatment just because they're 'pretty. However, that's where my takes as a reallyreally white person end.
Yeah this is about Hunter in the Owl House.
As Belos is my actual fav (in a hate-fuck way) character, I'm gonna get it out of the way that yes ppl are 100% into Philbelos because he's a scary looming British blonde man and yeah his fans are way too apologetic of him because Mathew Rhys' voice and those designs are top-notch. Cynically, ppl are into Belos because they can't accept a passively nice white guy could be the same as a Trump supporter; realistically, a lot of us are also fascinated by how awful and why he is the way he is which is where are dumb headcanons come from.
With Hunter, I think half of the problem comes from the show prioritizing wrapping up the lore and backstory of the Wittebros as neatly as they could before it ends. Like it or not, Hunter is tied to the backstory of the villain and an important connection between the main kid cast and Belos directly thru him. Half of the discovers and unearthing of just how bad Belos is is done in relation to Hunter/Caleb/the grimwalkers. Like them or not (you don't have to, it's not law requiring you to enjoy the problematic blonde clone) Hunter is important to the story of the Owl House. I really don't think we'd have this problem if we'd have more time for the series to wrap up, or at least half the time Amphibia had for it's final season. While the story+lore is important, I think equally important to that is our main character and her friends. We do get that- mind you, but it isn't as focal to the story as the Wittebro shit even tho it's emotionally important. It's also why we focused more on King in the end of s2 - his story and how he befriends the Collector is integral to how the show's gonna end...and all of that comes at the cost of Luz and friends' having both angst and their own centric, full realized plotlines.
^^^All that I just said is only one half of a full conversation and that conversation is worth being had -- the one about how much (intentional or not) focus there are on the white guyyz who are straight vs the BIPOC cast of lesbians. The thing is I'd prefer to have that convo with a BIPOC TOH fan themselves, not through a white ally echoing that complaint to justify their own hatred of Hunter.
This is a thing some white allies do: they hear a complaint from a person of color abt wanting more diversity and rep, abt feeling like people only care because it's a white character - and, if that ally happens to have any unrelated beef with said diversity-lacking thing, they hammer down on this being the "ACTUAL PROBLEM" w the character. They use someone else's valid take or criticism and treat it like they're own. In the case of one particular anti-Hunter person, it also comes with the accusatory shit ppl do abt sexymen that's REALLY uncalled for and kinda fugged up:
"You only like him because he's a white kid and you're also a white kid You wouldn't care if that trauma happened to him if he were BIPOC"
No. I could care abt him if he were another race. Also BIPOC ppl are allowed identify w white characters as much as white ppl are allowed to identify w BIPOC characters.
"The trauma written for him is manipulative and people are projecting too much of their own trauma onto him"
yeah that kinda happens when you got abused characters- abused people will see themselves regardless of how alike they actually are....um....that's none of your business???
"He's not actually a good character he's just a sad character"
yeah again ppl like sad characters. I know what you mean, ppl are so into characters being 'sad and quiet' they forget that the character also has to be well written to earn everyone's unabashed love (see also: Evan Hansen) but...isn't that just a matter of opinion then? Like, what's the big deal if this emotional trauma arc got me and I personally really liked it. Prioritized or not, like I'm suggesting, it's important to the story and I and other people thought it was handled well.
"You only care abt him because he's a pretty boy."
ok well I don't think much would change abt him if he were, fe, a girl instead. Maybe I haven't spent enough time w the Hunterstans as much as I have the Belos stans but from what I've seen, a lot of the complaints abt wanting to see more of Gus and Willow and Luz at all stems from those same fans also liking those characters and wanting them to have the same attention given to them by the show as Hunter and Amity have. In other words- a lot of Hunter fans also want more for the rest of the cast....maybe it's not fair to treat them like they're ur enemy for daring to like the plot specific character?
---
All of this to say: if you aren't a BIPOC person with the genuine complaint that Owl House has become too Hunter-centric at the cost of it's characters of color....please stop using other ppl's experiences to justify your hatred. There's truth in there but that's not your argument to square in on just because you want amo to use against the blonde bisch getting in the way of the witch and lesbians you 'came here to see'. Just be real with how you came here to see that and be an actual ally and reblog the legit arguments to be made by BIPOC fans. That's the other half of the conversation, try not to talk over it-
k that's all.

Ok but I feel bad when I have headcanons that some characters are autistic like Zuko or Keith Kogane because I’m not autistic and I feel like it’s not my place :/ I have adhd, which is pretty similar to autism on some points, and I’ve seen autistic people talk about why they think these characters are autistic and it always made sense to me. Like I can’t remember them cause Shit memory but I have read multiple posts of autistic people listing stuff these characters do that they also do, as an autistic person, and that’s why they relate to the character etc... which obviously makes you considerate the headcanon at least a bit. And it’s always made sense to me, once explained. And I don’t know if I should feel bad or not for having these headcanons 😭

I love inside job!! Could you do romantic yandere headcanons for Reagan? I feel like if she found someone she really liked, it wouldn't take much for her to go yandere lol
Reagan Ridley (Romantic Headcanons)
WARNING: cyberstalking, mentions of incarceration + death, psychological manipulation, toxic mindset.
Tumblr media
SCARCELY a thing that Reagan does is not first deliberated and tested, mentally or physically, with the scientific method. In private where presumably no one can listen to or see her, she rehearses a multitude of conversations that she either wishes or expects to have with her partner in the future.
The risk of allowing her excitement to get ahead of her mid-sentence and blurting something that upsets them is too great for the scientist to ignore.
When it comes time to apply what she practiced, Reagan is at a loss for how to approach them and hold a meaningful conversation that furthers the relationship.
As a result, early interactions with her tend to be stilted and disorganized, with the scientist either creating an abrupt excuse to leave or falling into an awkward silence until her partner or another colleague ends it.
Reagan wants her partner to have a favourable opinion of her, but thanks to workaholic and perfectionist tendencies fueled by years of neglectful and manipulative treatment at the hands of her parents, her social skills are abysmal.
Nevertheless, the scientist is, no matter how much she likes to deny it, desperate for their validation and seeks to attain it through the only mode she understands, her inventions.
Once she becomes more assertive, Reagan does not shed her prickly nature. The conversations that she initiates are dominated by explanations and, at times, demonstrations of her latest creations in hopes that her scientific prowess will gain their respect.
A dismissive, or not sufficiently encouraging, attitude towards her accomplishments reminds her of her father, and it is the quickest way to inspire vengeful frustration in the scientist.
Noticing his best work friend's distress, Brett Hand offers to roleplay as her partner to help her grow more comfortable with speaking to them. Reagan opposes the idea of making herself so vulnerable to criticism and making Brett privy to such personal information.
She rejects any direct assistance but occasionally asks for his opinion on the effectiveness of a method, and Brett supports what he believes to be a mutual relationship.
Reagan was neither taught nor properly learned how to manage the majority of her emotions in ways that are not self-destructive. Anger leads to brainstorming sessions about framing a murder as an accident, and sadness leads to binge eating and not leaving the couch for days.
Envy, such as when her partner voices admiration for the feats of others, is an overwhelming experience that Reagan struggles to process.
The scientist's go-to coping mechanism is marking the offender for an extraction team, thereby condemning them to lifelong imprisonment at a shadow government black site.
If the offender is an executive or a close colleague, however, Reagan concedes that they have a certain degree of immunity and settles for acting passive-aggressive and, assuming she can legally get away with it, exceptionally rude.
An unwilling ear is lent in the form of ROBOTUS, who is subjected to rants about failed attempts or people Reagen views as competition.
The genocidal robot is apathetic to his creator's troubles and tunes out after a while, but he is inclined to hack into a perceived rival's private files and compromise the integrity of her partner's social media if she baits him with more of the television series Friends.
Reagan develops a profile of her partner, one that is constantly broadening as additional facts and theories are added. Government surveillance and online tracking are exploited to research every action, every piece of information they ever shared with the internet.
Analyzing their digital footprint is, to her tech-savvy and borderline paranoid mind, the key to melding their preferences with hers and bonding with them most swiftly and proficiently.

peter quill dating hcs
Listen this isn't the smut headcanons
But it's peter quill
There's gonna be some 18+ jokes and content
I will keep this as sfw as possible bc you'd better fucking believe that Peter Quill relationship and intimacy hcs are on their fucking way
So yeah just a prelude
Anyway
Yuh let's get inTO it
Okay two things first
1: I'm so mad there's like no fics for him?????????? Why is he not yet a tumblr sexyman??????? I get the first movie came out in like 2014 so I probably just missed the hype window but for gods sake
2: a lot of ppl think he'd be easily flustered and blushy and that's totally and completely valid
However
Why are we overlooking the whole "I've slept with half the galaxy" thing????????
Like
Okay Peter is a goofball
We know this
And on top of that
He can get it
I'm going to stop myself there so more on that later
He's like 6'2, hilarious, charismatic, so loving and compassionate, fan fucking tastic music taste i could go on for days
I feel like more likely than not you'd probably go from fwb to lovers
Since this is the sfw half we're gonna focus more on the second half
I feel like he falls so hard and fast he doesn't really have time to be like
Oh no I'm falling in love dammit
He's so easily distracted by everything about you that he can't hear that voice going "snap out of it Peter"
Cause he does not want to
Oh my god sit on his lap when he's in the pilot's seat in the Milano
When he's not driving obviously
It's one of his favorite things you do
If you're Terran you bond over earth stuff really quickly
#growingupterran
He's really affectionate
Like really really affectionate
Rocket makes gagging noises whenever you're in the same room cause there's usually some kinda cuddling or kissing going on
Even just loving gazes across the room
Rocket is the voice Peter ignores telling him to snap out of it
Rocket: come on! This is gross! It's gross, right Groot?
Groot, handing Peter a flower to give to you: I am Groot :)
Peter, handing you the flower: thank you Groot, you're my new wingman
Rocket: >:(
Don't worry though, you call Rocket the weapons expert and he likes you suddenly
"What should we bring to the attack?"
"We should ask Rocket, he is the weapons expert"
Rocket, dropping down from an air vent, "DAMN RIGHT I AM"
Rocket gives me Rigby meets Dan from Dan vs energy
When Peter sees you getting along with the rest of the crew it makes his heart so happy
I’d say out of all marvel subunits the guardians have the most genuine found family dynamic
The support between him and his friends is so important to him, so when you integrate pretty easily as part of the group, it means a lot to him
If you’re terran
Which presumably you are
When he first shared his awesome mixes with you you loved it
You checked your phone and realized, very distraught, that you don’t have wifi in space
Luckily you had some music downloaded, so you have like 3 playlists you can listen to
Once you get to a planet with actual reception, you make copies of his mixes on spotify so y’all can shuffle them
He kind of prefers to listen straight through but the variety is nice
And the fact that you did that for him???? His heart goes boom boom
And his peepee goes hELLO
He’ll dance with you a lot
Albeit very shittily
But you both have fun
If you’re insecure about dancing you won’t be for long
Sometimes when you’re dancing he’ll have his hands on your waist
Just staring at you
He’s been from one corner of the galaxy to the next
He’s seen everything
And you still top the charts as the prettiest sight he’s ever laid eyes on
His eyes get all big and sparkly
His brow gets a little furrowed and he has this smirky smile
He lets out a breathy laugh, baffled at how after all the pain and loss and bullshit he’s endured
How someone as
Wonderful
As you came into his life
Man
He just likes spending time with you
And as much of a front as he puts up he will come damn near death to protect you and make sure you’re safe
The only reason he wouldn’t actually die for you is because then he wouldn’t be able to protect you more
But he will 100% sacrifice himself for your safety and wellbeing
Afterwards he’ll cover it up with self aggrandizing humor
“So we’re in agreement… that was so heroic, right?”
Through tears, you’ll clutch him and laugh
“Oh, yeah. Very brave, your medal of valor will be arriving soon,”
He does this to soften the blow of what he did
Both for you and him
Let’s be real, he’s not best with up front emotional vulnerability
He’ll deflect with humor or seduction
But it’s very thinly veiled
When he falls for you you know exactly how much he likes you
Which is a lot
Later during a quiet moment
Maybe you’re falling asleep with his cassettes playing softly
You can tell him not to do that again
How worried you are, how stupid it was, and that you don’t know what you’d do without him
Keep it brief though, he already knows good and well how much it scared you
Most importantly let him know how much how love him
How much you care about him, how much everything he does means to you
And that you’d do the same for him
“Uh, no- no way. The whole point was to keep you away from bodily harm.” He’ll chuckle, half joking, fingers tracing your neck and jawline
“Okay,” you’ll reply into the crook of his neck, “next time, we come up with a plan b where both of us avoid bodily harm. Deal?”
“Yeah,” he’ll say softly, pressing a kiss to your forehead, “deal.”
Oh god his feelings for you are so overwhelming in that moment
They're swirling around him like a typhoon
He’s so focused on your touch, your breaths, the warmth coming off of you that it just washes over him
All he can do is hold you close
He knows he has no idea what the coming days will bring
But he’ll be damned if you don’t face it side by side

do you read any veigar fanfic? if so, do you have any favorites/recommendations?
As someone who agonized through every (and I do mean every) fic on AO3 and Fanfiction.net tagged with "Veigar" that doesn't have Lulu in it, you've come to the right person with this ask.
My absolute favorite Veigar fic of all time is probably The Bastion Falls by Vezimira. Which is ironic, because it isn't really even a fic about Veigar- it's a fic about Soraka, it's a fic about the reign of the Iron Revenant, and it's a fic about mercy. Veigar is almost a footnote in his own story but at the same time is absolutely integral to its message. It's not just a fic with good ideas I like- it's a haunting short story that stands on its own as a masterwork.
In a close second to my favorite Veigar fic is NormalizeNull's In Pursuit of a Ghost. Again, surprisingly, this fic is less about Veigar directly, and more about what he means to the world around him. The fic actually stars Yuumi, in a fantastic characterization I've never seen before. The story explores a fascinating headcanon and ends with just the right amount of angst. I was deeply satisfied with this one, and would highly recommend it.
And third, here is VV by Vsafic. It basically fulfills the headcanon we all have of Veigar seeing the other angry goth yordle in the roster and immediately taking her in. Vex is written wonderfully here- not just reduced to her aloof demeanor, but actually complex -and Veigar's the same, his dramatics balanced with his more sensible side. Big fan.
Finally, there's a special category of recommendations I have. This is the angst category- they're not fun to read, but when you're in the mood to angst or perhaps be genuinely disturbed, go find these ones.
Veigar: That Which Cannot Be Forgiven is your classic, classic angst fic describing his backstory and the immediate consequences of it in excruciating detail. All whump, no fluff, served hot.
On another post I already recommended the Veigar x Syndra fic Witchcraft, so I'll link it here again. Veigar's characterization in this one is interesting, even if it is slightly-off canon. I've also never found another fic where the romance is written as so incredibly destructive. It's terrifying, reading much more like a horror story than a ship. It's as unique as it is genuinely disturbing, and for that alone I suggest that some of you give it a read.
Then there's Wound Healing. This one's weird and very experimental. Definitely delivers on the angst though. Worth a read.
But with all the good suggestions means I also have to confess the many (albeit entertaining) sins I've laid eyes upon:
One of the most interesting characterizations I've seen for Veigar comes from a smut fic. In this one, he's portrayed as older, more tired, and I think that's a very valid take for him. If you check this one out, absolutely do not read past the line that says ""We're being watched'". DO NOT. But everything before then is fascinating. (this fic also has the best characterization of Ahri I've ever read? Trust me, this is as upsetting to me as it is to you.)
If I had a nickel every time somebody attempted to write a Garen x Veigar fic, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot but it's absolutely fucking baffling that this happened twice. If you're intrigued, here's the better one (and it's actually pretty good?)
As for the award for "Most wildly out of character while still being my favorite", there's this Lux x Veigar fic. From the summary it actually sounds fascinating- and then quickly devolves into a head-scratching mess. Which is a shame, because I adore the concept of Lux and Veigar somehow finding an unlikely alliance to infiltrate into the heart of the Immortal Bastion! I might steal this concept and give writing it a shot. In the meantime, glean what you can from this one.

hi! i hope you don't mind the long ask, but i've been a long time subscriber and admirer of your stuff, and i just wanted to ask - do you think that there is a limit to transformative fandom and the way ppl reinvent canon and characters? please note that i am in no way criticizing you or anyone else in this ask (although i understand if it might come off like that), this is simply me posing a question to someone who has been in fandom for a long time, and who i think has both the experience 1/
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hi there -- I appreciate that you enjoy my blog and stuff I make :)
“Do you think there is a limit to transformative fandom and the way people reinvent canon and characters?” Not a limit that anyone can enforce, or should attempt to. You can only control you.
What kind of fan should you be? Canon compliant or wildly transformative? The only kind of fan anyone should be is kind and considerate. If everyone was more concerned with personal integrity as human beings, I suspect you would not be feeling all this angst. Curative vs transformative is a useful framework—and understanding the distinction between canon, fanon, and headcanon is very important for having meaningful dialogue (a benefit of being in the community)—but it is not a directive for how fandom should conduct itself. Do you what brings you joy.
“If someone wants to be delusional about the way a character truly is, if someone wants to write a character so OOC and far removed from who they are in canon, should we let them? Should there be a hard limit to what people can or cannot do with characters? Should we limit that indulgence, that sandbox?” Yes. No. No. Again, the only person whose experience of a narrative/piece of media/text etc. that you can control, is your own. You can’t even control how people read or react to your own fic or art. The only power you have is the power of your own energies and attention—direct them at what you enjoy or agree with, ignore what you don’t, and recognize that any proprietary feelings you have towards things you like are just that: feelings. If your feelings lead you to argue someone should not be allowed in the sandbox, someone else’s feelings will argue the same against you. #fuckcensorship
Is there a proper way to understand a text and the roles that characters play in it, and being true to that when we enjoy and write fic for it?  No. There may be what appears to be consensus, but the whole point of art (of which stories are a kind) is to affect, and everyone will be affected differently. And no interpretation or reading will be accurate or comprehensive except to individual, and even then, people contain multitudes and contradictions.
Should people not project themselves onto their favorite characters because it ruins both the text and other people’s perception of the text?  There’s no way to “ruin” the original for anyone except for yourself. It remains there in the way it was put out into the world, even if the entire fandom takes the characters/themes/plot/etc. and puts them through a woodchipper or a concrete mixer with their own projections.
If what you’re looking for is validation that fandom is a contradictory mass of strong opinions often parading as rules, then yes, I can agree with you there. I can even reassure you that I have strong opinions myself and that many of them are not charitable! But I can’t tell you how to engage with fandom beyond “don’t be a dick”, or that there’s an easy way to navigate fandom without any personal discomfort about how other people are doing things.
(Re: that post I reblogged about “characters that suck”: the frustration implicit in that post is not directed at fandom, but at original creator(s)—though yes, the frustration can spill over into fandom. Shitty characters are good! Narratives that don’t acknowledge their shittiness are not personally for me! But as for what we can do about that … nothing, except do what humans do and write a story we like better :p)
