#let me on the writers team. let me ON
I think the funniest thing to come out of Dragons Rising is the fact that both seasons have a character with at least one explicitly queer-subtext moment. Sora with her name and rejecting the society that she didn't fit in with, Bonzle worried no one would accept her for who she is now when compared to who she was "supposed" to be, my friends the closet is made of glass.
I've decided this is now mandatory, at least one queer allegory every season. I'm enlisting all of you to help me enforce it. Onwards, lads, to victory

So. Did you know there's a backstory to Dick's mullet?
Because there is.
Mirage convinced Dick to let her restyle him while she was impersonating Kori. Which he went along with, because Kori had been incredibly depressed for the last several weeks and nothing Dick said or did seemed to be helping her. Dick had pretty clearly hit the point where he was willing to do just about anything to make her happy again.
Which I know doesn't even begin to compare to the many other ways Mirage took advantage of him (trust me, I just read it,) but has made me hate the mullet jokes now, because that was not Dick's choice.
(I'm sure it's just a coincidence Dick's hair & costume came out of it looking a lot more like the future!Dick Mirage was pining over. Contrasts between future!Dick & the classic Discowing Dick was wearing in the arc right before this one below the cut.)
-------------------------------------------
Here's future!Dick...
....Aaaand Discowing.
Obviously, she somehow magically grew his hair out several inches. But even beyond that...
Look at the stripe shape & placement on the new suit, lining up with both future!Dick's stripes & his mesh armbands.
Look at the glove shape, going from a segmented gauntlet to a single elbow-length piece with a curved upper edge.
While Dick's boots are considerably less dramatic than his future self's thigh-highs, they are still much more strongly emphasized in Mirage's version of the costume.
While future!Dick has the diamond on his abdomen like Discowing, future!Dick's costume has much less detailing around his abdomen.
Discowing also isn't the one with a utility belt. A belt which just so happens to have the same insignia as future!Dick's shield. Weird that.
While neither of the prior versions have the little glider-cape, I would like to note it's something future!Dick probably could've gotten a lot of use out of, given the way his sidekick usually carried him around.
.
So anyway, I have gone from being kinda tired of the mullet jokes to actively disliking them. Less jokes about the mullet, more jokes about the rat-tail please.

Hi Bel,
I keep seeing comments about people complaining about the quality of destiny’s writing and story in the last few weeks. I haven’t really engaged with destiny since season of defiance, what’s currently gotten everyone so riled up? I thought that people were enjoying Season of the Deep/Witch in terms of narrative, why is Season of the Wish causing people to deride the destiny writing staff again?
I don't know!
Deep and Witch have been absolute bangers in every aspect to me. I've been enjoying all interactions and lore tabs we've received. A lot of them are stuff that we've never had before, a lot of reunions and closures, a lot of development and interactions between characters who you wouldn't really think would have much in common.
Sloane's return and healing from what she's been through has been fantastic, Drifter opening up with her to help her because he also got help from others was fantastic, Sloane reuniting with Aisha and Shayura brought me to tears (Shayura's descent into madness was triggered by immense trauma of Sloane staying on Titan and Titan disappearing), everything with Sloane and Zavala...
Witch was just incredible in every single way; the focus on Eris, the amount of Eris and Ikora content!!!!! Everything about Xivu and Savathun and their interactions together!! Eris finally fulfilling her goal she promised Savathun YEARS ago, getting that closure.
Wish so far has been equally great to me. All the new stuff about Ahamkara is amazing, finally giving us proof for long-standing speculation about Ahamkara and how they aren't universally evil creatures and expanding on them as a species. I love all interactions we've had so far; finally we have Petra back, Mara's singleminded focus on figuring out how to defeat the Witness and her continuous work to improve as a person, ALL SJUR MENTIONS!!!!! I won't talk about the "leak" because we have no context for it so I will wait for the full story to be revealed before I can pass judgment; something that I think should be a lesson to learn from this entire year. Maybe wait for the story to finish before judging the story.
Literally everything this past year that involves Osiris, but especially this season now that he's back in his element with the Vex. And of course every little detail we get of him and Saint. Osiris honestly shaped this year for me with everything that he's done to uncover the biggest mysteries. I think a big reason is that a lot of people just don't like Osiris, which I consider a massive skill issue.
Other than that, I don't know what are the issues people have besides just not being interested in any of these storylines and attributing it to a nebulous "bad writing" claim. I also genuinely believe that way too many people get wrapped up too much in fandom, imagine storylines they want to see and then get disappointed when the actual story doesn't go there. Almost like people forget that this isn't their story and these aren't their characters. A lot of it is also fandom completely warping characters into not what they actually are and then feeling like the canon story is the one that's wrong.
Whatever is the reason, I guess everyone is entitled to their perspective of the story and everyone is free to explore the story in different ways through fanfics and AUs and whatever. I do that too!
But I would definitely ask people to be normal with how they engage in criticism, especially in the current state of affairs. Writers are developers; they experience a ton of harassment and negativity from the community and also from inside the company. And they are online: they can see what we're saying. It's been documented that community commentary has been used to harass writers:
Imprint this into your brain and never forget what these people had to go through. Let's not forget also the way people treated Seth Dickinson on social media when he was active with Destiny fans. "Fans" were actively arguing with him about his own work (telling him that HE is wrong) and were utterly disgusting towards him when he tried explaining what he wrote. His works are now hailed as the best writing in Destiny and people want him back. If I were him, I wouldn't want to come back ngl, not with how he was treated and not with how fans are still treating writers (and hey, Seth wrote LF Collector's Edition! So he was back, technically, this year!). Let's not forget that a lot of writers are members of various marginalised groups. And I'd definitely not want to go back with zero support from leadership.
Which is also an important aspect for all developers, including writers: sometimes they have orders they may not like, but can't argue against. They do the best they can with what they're given, the time they have and directions they receive. And with that in mind, I am enjoying everything we've gotten this year, obviously with some specific complaints about things I didn't particularly enjoy (like the universally mid reception of Defiance; I've spoken about my gripes with it before, a big one being the shafting of Suraya who should've at least been mentioned in a lore tab).
I can tell that there is passion in their work, even if maybe they would prefer to do more with it, but can't. Maybe even if they want to take different routes, but can't. But from what we got, I can feel that they care about this world and these characters. I can tell that someone lovingly wrote about Sloane and her friendships with two grieving women. I can tell that they deeply cared about Sloane's friendship with Zavala and that they loved showing us Saint and Drifter caring about a fellow trauma survivor.
I can tell that the writers are immensely careful and loving towards Eris; everything she went through was crafted with love and passion from both writers and her VA. Eris' story is such a fundamental aspect of Destiny and I can tell that this was important to the writing team and that they gave her everything they could to do justice to her character and her arc and her healing and her release from the cycle she was trapped in for so long.
I can tell that there are writers who care a lot about Osiris and Saint and their relationship. I can tell that someone cared a lot about expanding on Ahamkara and giving them more personalities. I can tell that someone cared DEEPLY about Sjur and Mara and that her repeated mentions are the passionate work of writers who want us to remember her.
I could go on. And I know that not everyone sees it this way, which is fine; we all have different ways of perceiving stories. I enjoy discussing things we in the fandom disagree on and I enjoy hearing different perspectives! Unfortunately, this has recently become rarer and rarer. And for the love of god, please try and treat writers with some respect, especially now, especially those who are still working and doing their best with the shitty situation they're in. None of the cries of "poor devs" ring true to me unless the same is given to writers, instead of treating them like punching bags.

I have seen you talking about Dick & Dami's relationship and Dick & Tim as well, but what are your takes on Dick and Jason actually?
Like how you wish their relationship should be portrayed today and where are them missing when it comes to making those two acting like siblings?
Do you think in the past their dynamic was better?
How Dick views Jason and how Jason views Dick?
This is difficult to answer because there are like 8 different stages to Dick and Jason's relationship with various dynamics. They also view each other a bit differently depending on which stage we're talking about.
The way I would like their relationship to be portrayed today isn’t necessarily possible thanks to Jason’s integration into the family and acceptance of the no killing moral code. For me, their ideal dynamic is portrayed in Outsiders #44-46. And I know people are gonna find that regressive as hell but, tbh, that dynamic is far more interesting than the kinda awkward thing they have going on now.
Although, I don't mind that they acknowledge their brotherhood in a serious manner now. Like before they'd kinda be like, "Eh... I mean... we were adopted from the same guy but... brothers? Eh..." And now they're more firmly in the, "We're brothers," camp. So that development is interesting.
Character progression wise, it wouldn't feel right for for them to be super close in the way that, say, Dick and Tim are (unless we saw a lot of trust and relationship building between them), but at the same time, there is part of me that kind of wants them to have that older sibling bond (except Jason is closer in age to Tim than he is to Dick sooo actually let's just leave older sibling things to Dick and Cass... not that Cass is much older than Jason though so LOL this is why Dick has to lone the oldest sibling thing by himself... which is funny because Dick is technically no longer the oldest sibling, he's a baby brother now... except Dick and Melinda's relationship really hasn't progressed much sooo you could say they share blood but don't consider each other family yet, in which case, Dick is still the oldest... I mean, regardless, Dick is the oldest sibling of the Waynes... god why did they have to make all of this so difficult 😫).

People latch on to and project onto Jason as The Black Sheep in a toxic family dynamic, likewise people latch on to and project onto Dick as The Caretaker in a toxic family dynamic

Love Potion (3)
Part 1 here and Part 2 here
Ahem. Have some info dumping with a side of world building and dash of mystery.
******************************************************
Witch was in over her head. She had enchanted her hair and eyes the same shade of light brown, and then further tucked the mass of her curls into a cap. She peered at Villain and his companion, using the shadow of a nearby stall for cover.
She had been trailing them through the busy afternoon market for just a little while now. She didn’t know how to make sense of what she was seeing. Villain’s companion was Hero.
Long before she gained the moniker of the witch, she had been a child with no name and no home. The kingdom’s court was a complicated one with five ruling families, all too busy bickering their own drama to care for the orphans roaming the streets of the poorer districts.
Expect Hero. Kind, funny, unyielding Hero. An illegitimate son of the Ronai queen, somewhere long down the line of inheritance, Hero was a legend in this area.
Witch still remembered when she had first seen him. She had been so small then, curled up against the back wall of a bakery. A layer of snow had settled on her head and she hadn’t even had the energy to shiver anymore.
Witch had left a warm weight around her shoulders and looked up through blurry eyes. There was Hero, wrapping his own fur clock around her tiny form. He couldn’t have been much older than she was now, but that scrawny little boy had lifted her up and taken her inside his carriage. Given her freshly baked pastries dusted with sugar and warm milk.
She had stuffed it all down in a rush, excepting him at any moment to ask for something in return. He hadn’t. He had taken her to an Inn and paid for a year’s stay. She had heard other stories about Hero in passing too. Small and big acts of kindness. The noble Hero, not afraid to mix in with commoners.
Each of the five ruling families were required to send a quota of their children to enlist, and being illegitimate as he was, Hero was sent off to war soon as he was of age. Witch hadn’t seen him for years, but she still recalled the taste of sugared pastries on snowy days.
Yet here he was, talking and laughing with the owner of a stall of colorful trinkets laid across a table. His pale, shoulder-length hair was unevenly sun-bleached. He was tanner too, with enough freckles to fill the night sky. But his smile was still the same big and bright.
Even if not in conversation, Villain’s eyes never shifted from Hero’s face. His gaze was soft, as if looking at Hero was like looking at all the beautiful things in the entire world. If Witch hadn’t known any better, she would have thought that Villain was the one who had drunk the love potion.
“Where’s your mother?”
Witch startled, nearly stumbling back into the person who had asked the question. She craned her head back to see a woman with deep laugh lines and hair gathered in a simple updo.
“Are you lost?” The woman turned Witch around and gave her a concerned once over. Shoot. Perhaps the glamour she had used made her appear a tad too young.
“N-no. Thank you. I was just, I saw Hero-” Witch stopped herself before she blurted out any more information.
The women’s worry melted away into delight. “So you know of Hero! You must be here to welcome him back!”
She didn’t bother to correct her. Witch was already starting to feel guilty at not knowing he had returned from the front. She let the woman go on about the different stories of people coming up to thank Hero.
“And it was a bit of a surprise, to see Hero with the Khalan commander. A Ronai and Khalan, can you imagine?”
“The Khalan commander?” Witch asked absentmindedly. Clearly she was more out of date with the town gossip that she had thought. Shocking, she knew, with how much the townsfolk liked to gossip. She just never had a reason to pay attention.
“Oh, dear, I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with it. It’s just that they had quite the rivalry going. We didn't expect it, you know.”
Witch twirled the stolen ribbon that had led her here between her fingers. They both had turned back to look at the two in question. Her gaze dropped to Villain’s wrist, catching sight of the glittering cuff. So he had gotten a replacement. It seemed rather flashy for a lover’s token.
She shifted her line of sight to Hero’s wrist, where a matching green bracelet shimmered. No, not a mere lover’s token anymore. Green signified promise. Witch felt something akin to panic lash through her chest.
The woman continued her happy chatter, oblivious of Witch’s inner turmoil, “Isn’t it so sweet? They’ll be getting married tomorrow! It'll be a royal wedding for the history books.”

What do you wish Jancy’s ending to be in Season 5?
Oh Anon, it's dangerous to have hope but I do have it...
I've previously discussed what should narratively happen with Jonathan and Nancy's arcs both individually and as a couple. The show should end with Nancy following her investigative journalist dreams in a city that is not Hawkins and end with Jonathan choosing himself, moving to city where he can easily engage in his artistic passions and career.
... But what ending do I wish for them?
Well... obviously... I wish they end up together and I do believe what I laid out above (and in my many previous posts) aligns with their endgame. I also believe that the 'power of love' will continue to be a key theme in season 5 and even though their love will be tested during the upcoming season, they will ultimately prevail because it's just too on brand for the show.
But when I think about the epilogue and those final moments of the show, I envision seeing them working together, as an investigative duo (like we've seen them work together throughout the seasons). Maybe they work for a newspaper, maybe they do some PI work, however, it will be clear that Nancy's journalistic instinct will drive Jonathan's ability to capture the moment and Jonathan's photos will help Nancy view the case in a new light. They'll be living in a city, maybe New York, maybe Boston, or even Chicago.
But we will be able to tell that they still love each other, that they are still a team, but that they are also happy individually and have followed their dreams.
That's my hopeful ending for them.
But I try to keep my expectations super low because...

Tell the truth comic fans challenge. When's the last time you read a comic and how many have you actually read?
P.S. This isn't me being gatekeepy btw I'm being genuine because I'm gonna be honest I've probably only actually read about five series and every thing else I've gotten from movies/series, online, or fanon. I know all the important events. Have I actually read them? No because my ADHD just wouldn't. And I can't be assed having to read important events if it's in a shit run by a bad writer.
