I hold my head in my hands as I try to mask my obvious frustration. I fail miserably when a choked out sob escapes my lips, and I feel embarrassment wash over me as I quickly look up.
I notice the way his shoulders tense, but he doesn’t turn around to look at me.
Thank goodness.
I use the opportunity to make a swift escape, all the while holding back a sea of tears. Before I can walk through the door, his arm hooks around my waist; he prevents me from fleeing.
“And where do you think you’re going?” His soft voice conveys his gentle concern as his hand soothingly rubs my arm.
I can’t answer him or I’ll break.
He doesn’t push for an answer. Instead he swivels me around, purposefully averting his eyes so he doesn’t see my face, and pulls me against his chest.
“One of the subordinates thought it would be funny to have a contest. It was a good idea since it involved cleaning, but I was horrified when I walked into a room to see soap suds covering every surface as they threw bubbles at each other. Thankfully things improved when Thoma slipped over the soap suds and landed in a pile of blankets. When he stood up some of the soap suds covered his face which gave him a funny looking beard. Ayaka walked by and couldn’t contain her laughter, and the flustered look on Thoma’s face was better than any scolding I could’ve given them.”
His story is so random but it’s comforting to hear his angelic voice, so I hum in acknowledgement. “There’s this romance series that was just released. It seems like something you’d like. The premise is a girl who acts as a secretary for her boss. The boss is rumored to be bold and intimidating, so the boss chooses to send their secretary to do their bidding. The boss’ financial advisor ends up walking in on a meeting with the secretary and their boss, but the secretary is alone. It’s revealed that the secretary is the boss and was just pretending to be a secretary to avoid some… inconveniences.” Ayato finishes his explanation and waits for my reply.
“How does that sound like something I’d like? It sounds so dumb.” My voice cracks and my bottom lip is trembling, but I snort at how stupid the plot line sounds. Ayato hums thoughtfully to himself but he continues to explain the premise of the show. “Well, the secretary ends up ‘quitting’ once her secret is revealed and properly acts as the boss. The financial advisor acts as her right hand since he’s the only one who learned of her secret and well- It seems interesting enough to give it a chance. Wouldn’t you agree?” Ayato prompts me for a response, but he doesn’t rush me for an answer.
“Alright. Wanna cuddle on the couch and watch it with me?” I ask him.
“I’d love nothing more..” Despite how sad I feel, his words warm my heart.
That’s how I end up on the couch with Ayato, laughing at the highly enjoyable romance series. At some point I end up curled against him, my entire body clinging to his arm as his free hand plays with my hair.
At some point I silently cry against his sleeve as the show continues to play, and he quietly remains by my side through it all.
Once I finish crying I feel a bit better, and I gain the courage to look at Ayato’s face.
His eyes easily meet mine and they sparkle as he wipes the remaining tears from my face. He plants a sweet kiss against my forehead before looking back at the TV screen. He chastises the financial aid for botching his kabedon attempt, only for the boss to turn the tables and outdo him.
I finally feel like I can laugh without holding back tears, and that’s when my night finally begins to improve.
Eating my favorite snacks with Ayato on the couch, watching a surprisingly good romance series.

Vampire Kamisato Ayato
Slightly 🍋
Sorry if it cringes
Gn reader (no mention of gender)
___________________
We all know this man is busy, which makes it rare for you to see him, although when he has some time to spare for you, he'll make sure to leave you a blushing mess from all the teasing he do
Ayato mostly drinks blood from his loyal servant (Thoma), yet when you ask him to drink from you, his dead heart pounds fast
He will start by kissing your neck gently and praise you for being so kind to let him feed from you, tracing his fangs on the vein that he'll drink from
Enjoying his meal, taking what you offered for him, the taste of your blood in his mouth was so heavenly so addictive he wanted to have more only to stop or else he'll be risking your well being
As breaking contact of his fangs with your neck, his eyes were met with your undone form just because he fed on your blood sent life to his boner
He couldn't help but just have his way with you

Poor thing can't sleep without you. He has to have you by his side on the bed, whether you want to or not. He can't sleep without your warmth. He'll continue to beg with puppy eyes, begging you to just come to be with him. How can you deny him? It's not like it's anything bad...
Fucking god you can't even move an inch from him when he's resting his head on your chest, having his arm wrapped snuggly around you. All you can do his run your fingers through his hair, massaging his scalp while hoping that you can sleep with this big of a man is sleeping on you.

ink to paper — k. ayato
mutual/oblivious pining + "don't look at me that way."
synopsis. yes, he thinks. what would he do without you? well, his schedule would be a mess, for one. and he wouldn't know how to cut bunny ears into his apples, either.
wc. ~1.2k
— for @kruinka and @ph-xntasy / @yuellii 🫶 | event masterlist ✉️
Tumblr media
You've cut his apples into petit rabbits today.
The ink at the end of Ayato's brush has soaked through his page at least three times since he started scribing, big globs of black ruining what could have been a beautiful sequence. And the culprits for distracting him taunt him with their little red ears.
In fact, they've been sitting for so long that the flesh of the fruit is starting to brown. How long has he been unproductively glancing up and down between his paper and his breakfast?
He had told you that they were in season as a passing comment the last time he saw you—nothing more than a throwaway line to make conversation. Yet here you are, showing up at his table with a tray of his usual breakfast and something extra. Something hand-crafted and too cute for him to even fathom putting into his mouth.
It seemed that you had a special place in your memory for him. He could bring up the smallest wish and it would show up on his desk the next day.
It was your job to know him inside and out, after all. Your sole duty as his scheduler. Even so, you made time to do things outside of your job description if only to please him. You always looked so happy to see him, too. He's starting to wonder if you have a crush on him.
He glances at his clock. While he is busy with work, what harm would a few minutes do if he were to be a little distracted?
Tumblr media
Kamisato Ayato cannot cook.
He remembers fondly the only time he had ever demonstrated his kitchen skills to you. After unpacking his favourite tempura from Uyuu restaurant, he proceeded to line the shrimp up on a plate and decorate it.
You found humour in his apparent lack of expertise in the kitchen, chalking it up to his spoiled upbringing. He hadn't believed you then, thinking that you were being too harsh as well as too distracted by the melody of your laugh to bother dwelling on it. But now he's here, trying to do something as simple as cutting apples and failing miserably.
What spurred him on to do this in the first place is beyond him. Maybe he thought that the smile on your face when you saw his efforts would be worth all the trouble, or perhaps he was seeking your approval since he admired your ever-growing list of skills.
From servant to sparring partner to cook to personal scheduler, you were quickly making yourself a regular part of his day. He envied your adaptability, having little opportunity as a noble to try.
He figured this would be a chance to start. To learn, if it were to make you happy or proud.
Oh dear. Who knew cutting apples was such a daunting task?
Ayato thought this would be simple—cut some apples into cute shapes, make you smile, perhaps keep you around a bit longer to discuss it than you would usually stay. (Lately, he's been craving to hear your voice more and more.)
But this blade is tiny, unlike his hefty sword. It's too nimble for his fingers, and he's sure he has nicked himself at least a dozen times by now.
If you were here, you'd probably scold him for being so careless. And you'd set aside time in your busy day to help him, he's sure. It's in your nature to be kind which makes him miss you all the more.
Just as he's about to give up and call it quits, the door slides open.
Archons. He's been so engrossed in his woes that he had forgotten it was almost time for your scheduled meeting to go over his other plans for the week.
The scraps of peel and sloppily shaped apple slices are so incriminating that he doesn't even bother hiding it. You both stare at each other from across the table, completely unblinking and still.
"Um..." You strain out, clearly attempting to hide your amusement. "Hello."
He coughs awkwardly, placing down the paring knife and trying to uphold as much dignity as he possibly can.
"Hello," he greets, unable to meet your gaze anymore. "My apologies. Our meeting slipped my mind."
You gently pluck a rabbit from the plate, rotating it around in your fingers to get a better look. They're sloppy, for sure, with jagged edges and tiny slits where you know his knife slipped. And they don't even resemble anything remotely close to rabbits in the first place, more like blocky V-shaped thingamabobs.
You glance up and down between the rabbit and the man behind it, who looks strangely flustered considering his usually calm temperament.
"Don't look at me that way," he says quietly, wooden end of the blade gently knocking against the table as he deflates.
"Are these... bunnies?" You ask him in bewilderment.
"They are... supposed to be rabbits, yes."
Complete silence fills the room until Ayato feels as if he can't breathe. Coupled with the way your eyes are scrutinizing his attempts, he wants nothing more than to melt away.
And then you laugh. You can't stop laughing, it seems. Doubled over onto the table and fighting for air between giggles.
He can't help the softening of his expression, the warmth in his chest. If this is all it took to get you to smile like that, then who cares how embarrassing it is that he can't even cut fruit correctly?
You round the table, plopping down next to him. Oh no. He can't control his racing heart when you're leaning in so close to him, so close that he can feel the rumble of your laughter in his own body.
With your shoulders pressed together, body resting comfortably against his, you take the blade and slice of apple from his hands.
"I'll show you how," you offer. He watches intently as you make the first shallow slits through the peel, then gently slide the knife across the top. Too busy admiring your skillful hands, he almost instantly blurts out:
"Can you please show me again?"
You look at him funny, brows pinched but a smile still seeping across your face. You show him another time, expertly cutting another slice. And another. And another.
Unconsciously, or perhaps following the quiet voice in his heart, his head falls atop yours. You sink into him, allowing him to rest against you without complaint.
"Hm, am I your personal comforter now?"
"I suppose you are."
"You know, if you actually pay attention you might be able to make your own breakfast."
"Mm..." He hums when your hands don't stop moving despite your words. Instead, you laugh again. And again, there's the ever familiar thrum of his heart.
"Oh, dear Commissioner. What would you do without me?"
Yes, he thinks. What would he do without you?
Well, his schedule would be a mess, for one. He's far too busy to keep track of it all on top of his other work. And he wouldn't know how to cut bunny ears into his apples, either.
He would rather you keep him company anyway, bunnies and all.

➣ a new year’s kiss
Tumblr media
pairing: ayato, albedo, alhaitham, aether x gn!reader
summary: the countdown begins and you unexpectedly have someone asking to be your new years kiss
notes from lee: this one goes out to all my introverts and people that don’t like parties. i don’t either but there’s no new years kiss waiting for anyone sitting in bed at midnight yk + idk what even transpired while i was writing this and idk if it’s ooc since it’s been a hot minute since i’ve written anything so enjoy? AND wishing for all of you to have an amazing new year! i’m super thankful for all of y’all to be supporting me on this blog and yeah! love you guys immensely 🫶
Tumblr media
it’s not normal for you to be at a party new year’s eve but your friend has insisted. saying “new year, new you!” and promptly whisking you away to some party.
you know nobody and the whole party seems to drag on for far too long. the countdown is closing in on zero and most hold their partners close in anticipation for the new year’s kiss tradition.
you know that there probably wasn’t anyone here that would ask to kiss you and you’re much too shy to ask someone yourself. but unknown to you, there’s someone making their way across the room right now, determined to ask you for a kiss.
Tumblr media
ayato:
you stick to the wall with a cup in hand as the countdown starts. you expect nothing because that’s how it’s been every other year, but unexpectedly there’s someone cupping your cheek
“do you mind?” he asks and you shake your head no and as the tv and people scream happy new year, the stranger places his lips on yours
it’s a short peck but you enjoy it nonetheless. you look up at the man who had just kissed you to find it’s kamisato ayato
he’s extremely gorgeous and the frequent topic of discussion amongst your friends for his looks and money
you think you’ve maybe had a class or two with him but nothing to ever warrant getting to know him
“thank you for making my new year memorable…” he trails off as a way to ask for your name
“on contrary i should be saying thank you. i’m (y/n), it’s nice to meet you or should i say kiss you?” you laugh at your own joke awkwardly and you’re ready for him to leave and go back to his friends at this point
however, he continues to talk to you, “you know, there’s a common saying about sharing a kiss on new years. it’s something along the lines of having a good relationship with the person you kiss.”
he pauses to take note of your reaction before continuing “so i believe that means we will have a good relationship ahead of us, that is if you will go out with me?”
Tumblr media
albedo:
you’ve been sitting out on the patio waiting for your friend to be finished because archons knows you were done the moment you got here
parties are not for you. they are overwhelming and teeming with people you don’t know and awkward social situations. you wish you had stayed at home and celebrated by yourself, if at all
it’s cold outside and unfortunately you left your coat inside but it’s too much work to go in and come back out. so you sit with your knees tucked into your chest and wait
that is until someone drapes a coat around your shoulders. “you looked cold. sorry if i’m overstepping your boundaries.”
you turn to say thank you, but the words don’t seem to come out as you can only focus on how pretty the boy in front of you is
“it seems like parties aren’t your thing either. i’m albedo by the way. i’m not fond of making friends at these kind of things but…” he trails off unsure of how to finish his thoughts
“no, no i get it! you never know what types of people attend these things.” you laugh awkwardly before sticking out a hand for him to shake and introducing yourself, “i’m (y/n). and thanks for the jacket but i would feel terrible if you were cold too.”
you shrug off the jacket and fold it over your arm for him to take but he just smiles and pushes it back your way. “i don’t get too cold actually. i just take it so my friends don’t worry and to offer to pretty people.”
you laugh in disbelief but don’t say anything. you put the coat on again, thankful that it is providing some warmth
you look inside as you hear people start to countdown and steal a glance towards albedo
you would ask him the question but you’ve just met him and you know you’re not bold enough to ask even if he had been flirting with you just a moment ago
luckily you don’t have to do anything. albedo reaches out to find your hand, “may i have the honor of being your new year’s kiss?”
normally you would say no, he’s a stranger after all, but even being at a part was not normal for you, so you nod
he leans down to where you sit and puts his face close to yours waiting until the countdown reaches zero. and when it does, his warm lips meet yours and you can feel the smile on his lips as he kisses you
Tumblr media
alhaitham:
you’re in the kitchen when he approaches you. he looks over at something before saying anything and you’re almost tempted to just leave
“hi. i’ll get straight to the point. i made a bet with my annoying roommate that involves kissing you at midnight. i’m getting $500, a night of peace, and a bottle of wine. if you agree, you get half. if not no worries, i’ll find another way to kick him out.”
you almost want to laugh at the comical situation you’re in. there’s no way this is real, a good looking guy offering to pay to kiss you? “is he that bad? and i don’t know you, what makes you think i would agree?”
he raises his eyebrows and smirks, “i’m alhaitham. i attend the sumeru academia and am double majoring in ancient history and linguistics. i like to read and i work at the library on campus. that should be sufficient, no?”
he ends his little summary of himself and looks back once again and this time you follow his gaze. he’s looking at the tv to see how much time is left in the countdown.
you only shake your head at him, with a slight smile. what harm was there in letting an attractive guy kiss you and then pay you for it?
“i expect my pay by the end of the week.” you tell him and his eyes seem to light up if only slightly at your agreement
when the countdown reaches zero he doesn’t hesitate to press his lips onto yours. his lips are warm and pull away quicker than you would like.
you can definitely hear a mortified “NO” over the shouts of everyone else and alhaitham only laughs instead of searching for the voice
he takes out his phone and hands it to you so you can give him your number and you do the same. “$250 and a date, yeah?”
you tilt your head in confusion, a date? he said nothing about that earlier
he smirks once again and explains, “i did say half of my earnings and half a bottle of wine shouldn’t be enjoyed alone.”
Tumblr media
aether:
he’s knelt on the floor when you almost step on him, either knocked down or looking for something, but you try not to question it
“oh my archons, i’m so sorry! i didn’t notice you, um is there anything i can help you with.” you extend a hand out for him to grab and help pull him up and he takes it
“sorry, i’m looking for my sister. i didn’t notice where she went and was just a bit worried about her.” he reaches his hand back to scratch at the back of his head.
he introduces himself and then describes what she looks like and as you turn to help him look he grabs your wrist and turns you back around
“i’m sorry, that was a lie. she’s standing with the rest of my friends who told me i need to come over here and talk to you. they’re sick of listening to me talk about how pretty you are.” he sighs and is flushed red at the confession and moves his gaze to the floor
your eyes widen and you don’t even know what to say. “seriously? good thing i think you’re pretty cute too.” you smile and he picks up his head
he looks anywhere but you and is still flushed. “would you mind if i kissed you at midnight then?”
you just shake your head at the shy boy, but you still agree. when the countdown reaches zero his kisses you and you can hear his friends chant his name and cheering him on

♡ ゚˖ ॱ ▎THE WAY THEY HOLD YOU IN THEIR HEART PT2ㅤ𝅄 🌿 ꒱
˖ ࣪ ayato, xiao, baizhu, wriothesley, al haitham
warnings :maybe ooc in some parts (mostly al haitham), gn!reader, slight pining, reader is called endearments multiple times, tooth rotting fluff, implied marriage, established relationships, very slight angst in some parts, indirect mentions of death (xiao, baizhu), reader is called beautiful (wriothesley), non fluent writer
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
ㅤThere you were, standing in the sunlight in all of your glory and your beauty. And he wondered, was life always so bright and cheerful or was it just because now he had you?
ㅤAyato fell in love with you for the first time during spring. The flowers bloomed so beautifully as they flew onto your hair, and he wished for nothing more than to be the one to pluck each of the petals gently from you, with every petal a kiss.
ㅤThe second time he fell for you was during a warm rainy day in summer. As he watched you hiding from the rain in a store, your hair was already soaked. There, he spoke with you for the first time ever.
ㅤHis first words to you were, "You'll catch a cold like that, dear.", and the endearment slipped past his lips so easily like it was already your name.
ㅤHe even started to wonder if your name had always been written right besides his in the sky. Always destined to meet somehow someday. Like the gods had taken pity on him and sent you to ease his burdens.
ㅤThe third, and last, time he fell for you was the most impacting for him. It was on a lonely night during winter, when you still looked like spring itself while quietly sitting on a bench, warming a freezing dog with your jacket.
ㅤHe could see from where he was standing that you yourself were trembling. Still, you sat on the bench with snow covering your hair while hugging the dog to your chest, pouring all of your wishes for it to be well.
ㅤOn that starlit night, it was like something pushed him to approach you again. Offering his two hands to carry the poor dog to his house. It was everything he could do for now, but as you settled down on the floor of his house, a warm blanket enveloping you and the dog wagging his tail now by your side, he thought of how well you looked right there.
ㅤIt was like his home was always supposed to be your home, ever since the start.
ㅤNow, he could barely remember the days he hadn't met you yet, shouldering the rain and the thunder in his life by himself. Could barely remember the days where all he did was work so that his family could have a better future. He focused on paperwork so much he forgot to learn about anything else. Even the most basic things like love.
ㅤAyato had always thought to himself that love had to come with a price. That love had to hurt even if a little, that it would be troublesome and destructive. That it would eat away at his everything and destroy his being starting from his heart. That love would burn and make him bleed, leaving only the scars when it left.
ㅤSo at first he didn't want to fall for you, except spring came again and at every sunrise your name was still upon his lips.
ㅤAnd contrary to his first conception of what loving meant, your love was peacefully kind. Like the gentle warm winds of summer that brought the smell of the ocean with it. It was calming, and instead of burning him, it was more like water, nurturing his being and planting flowers in his soul by the day.
ㅤAnd Ayato could slowly feel it, the inevitable sense of belonging to each other.
ㅤYour love for each other was much like that. Sometimes loud with laughter and bright smiles, other times it was quiet with the held hands and shared glances.
ㅤHe always told you "I'll give you one last chance to run away from here before you get stuck with me forever, my love." and you knew that if you truly asked him that, if you really didn't want to stay by his side anymore, Ayato would always let you go, because he loved you that much, that your happiness and freedom mattered more than anything else in the world to him.
ㅤInstead you would tell him, "Then you should get used to me, because I'm not going anywhere, darling." and he would grin so widely like he knew you were going to say that.
ㅤBefore, he was drowning in the things he had to do. Always having to be one step ahead of everyone, always keeping to himself. And he's glad he was able to meet you before it was too late, because he realized you were everything he ever needed.
ㅤJust you being part of his small, little family.
ㅤEvery time your birthday came up, Ayato tried something new. Last year it was a bouquet of flowers he cultivated himself, instead, all the flowers he tried to plant wilted before they could even bloom. This year it was supposed to be a homemade dinner, but all he managed to do was get kicked out of the kitchen by Thoma without a single plate of edible food.
ㅤ"I'm so sorry, my beloved. You have such an incompetent husband." He laughed quietly while sighing to himself.
ㅤ"Oh, don't say that. You just don't have the aptitude for... certain things, is all." You held your tongue before you ended up saying that he didn't have the aptitude for most things, instead.
ㅤAyato caught on to what you meant but instead of replying he simply grinned at your attempt to comfort him somehow. Even though you knew he was perfectly okay.
ㅤ"Then why don't you teach me, my love? I'm sure I would learn lots with such an incredible teacher such as yourself." And you knew he was teasing you, perhaps it was just an excuse to spend more time by your side and less time doing his job.
ㅤBut you also could read the subtleties behind his light hearted words and joking tone.
ㅤHe missed you a lot.
ㅤBeing always busy with his work, he often expressed his sorrow at not being able to always be there for you when needed. The last drop to the storm was when you had gotten sick last time and it only got to his knowledge by a letter sent from Thoma that already had been taking care of you for the past week.
ㅤHe rushed home at that only to find out that you were already almost completely healed. And he wondered how could he have let you slip past his priorities so easily.
ㅤYou knew Ayato felt guilty, by the way he caressed your skin, a touch lighter than a feather while he thought you were already sleeping, and the longing kiss that he would leave at your nape before snuggling closer to your body, his arms enveloping you as if he wanted to shield you from the world.
ㅤYou never really blamed him for anything. You knew what you were compromising for when you accepted his marriage proposal with the happiest of hearts. The proposal that Ayato until this day joked you only accepted out of pity for his sopping wet cat look outside of your doorstep on a rainy night. So many things had went wrong that day that led up to it, but he still called it the most joyful day of his life.
ㅤAnd you would tell him that you accepted him wholeheartedly because you loved him. It didn't matter to you whether he was a pitiful cat in a storm or the Yashiro Commissioner. And you knew you would never regret your decision as you stared at him now trying to conceal the hopeful glee in his eyes. Those beautiful eyes that carried so much emotion sometimes were the exact reason you fell for him at first.
ㅤSo, you just gently tap him in the nose while smiling, "Really now? I'll teach you if you promise you'll be a good student."
ㅤ"Of course. Don't worry, I'll be the best." he replied back, taking the hand you used to touch his nose to kiss your open palm before pressing his cheek onto it. He did it so lovingly it made your heart leap out of your chest.
ㅤHis eyes were filled with tenderness and you knew you were the only thing in his mind now.
ㅤThe flowers faint fragrance lightly pick at your nose as you see Ayato gently closing his eyes to lean onto you, his blue hair softly swaying in the breeze prompting you to raise your other free hand to stroke it affectionately. As you felt him leaning more and more into your body, until you were both intertwined in a tender and gentle embrace, you couldn't help but love him even more.
ㅤHe was a little insufferable sometimes, yes, and sure, he didn't know how to cook or how to take care of flowers, but he was still your little mess of a husband at the end of the day. For as long as you could hold him in your embrace.
ㅤAnd for as long as your love for each other still persevered, and just like in your vows, until the moon fell, forever.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ㅤXiao was the type of lover that one had to take time to understand his hidden intentions with certain actions. He wasn't exactly open to every single experience nor did he feel comfortable at first with many things, so you took your time to unravel his feelings and to nurture his love for you.
ㅤIn the way you would always catch his eyes watching you from afar in a mountain while you went about your way with your shopping, and even when he said he wouldn't accompany you this time he was always there by your side to carry the groceries in an instant.
ㅤIn the gifts left by your bedside table, and the protective talismans you would find inside your bag. It was subtle, in the slow and hesitant way Xiao started to open up to you.
ㅤAnd you could know the extent of his love for you when after a long night, when you laid by yourself on the bed, before you could even fully close your eyes Xiao was already there.
ㅤ"Sleep. I'll watch over your safety", he would say. Even for a minute you wished for his tranquility, that he would lay beside you, but you also knew Xiao was not one you should hurry on these issues. He had been lonely for a long time and all you wanted was for him to take how much time he needed to accept reality.
ㅤYou were fluent in silence and in his quiet presence, after all.
ㅤStill, one night, you stayed up a little bit later, your eyes still closed and your breathing calm despite being awake. You could feel and hear as the adeptus approached your supposedly slumbering figure to tenderly touch your cheek, his touch timid and unsure, like he was scared that even something like that could hurt you.
ㅤ"I'm sorry.", you thought you heard him say at that moment although his whisper was almost inaudible. Your heart hurt and instead of waiting, you hugged him on that night, no words being exchanged between you.
ㅤAll you heard was his mumbled gasp before he finally relaxed on your touch, awkwardly patting your back while leaning his head slightly on your neck, his hair tickling your cheek.
ㅤYou don't exactly know what he was apologizing for, but you decided not to press further and just let him embrace you. Although you had a faint idea of what was on his mind.
ㅤXiao was someone prone to blame himself for things that were outside of his responsibility. He blamed himself when you tripped on the street and he wasn't quick enough to catch you before your knee hit the ground. He blamed himself for falling in love with you and for allowing you to fall in love with him. In his mind, he probably still thought that everything around him was destined to perish one day, and that he was cursed to forever wander alone, his immortality like a tight chain holding him against himself.
ㅤSo on that night, you didn't let him go as usual, and he also didn't try to leave either. That was how he thanked you for your love that night, with his touch that, although ticklish and clumsy, made you feel so loved by this adeptus that had such a big heart but that was often misunderstood.
ㅤFor you, he wasn't the scary guardian of the mountains, nor the Conqueror of Demons, or the noble adeptus. He was simply Xiao, with his wounded heart and fallen shoulders bearing the responsibility of eons of loneliness and pain.
ㅤThe one that would shyly accept your hand as you guided him through streets filled with lanterns and the smell of food. The one who would go above and beyond if only to ensure your safety and happiness.
ㅤHis every little smile was stored in your heart and mind as your fondest memories, and his love for you was as gentle as a feather's touch.
ㅤXiao remembers the first time he met you, it was during the Lantern Festival, and while everyone was enjoying themselves you were by yourself, folding paper with a lonely plate of food by your side. He watched for a while, curiously. Although alone, you didn't seem sad. In fact, you were smiling and happily humming to yourself.
ㅤHe didn't know why, but he felt entranced and approached you slowly, not making contact with you since he didn't want to scare that peaceful moment away. Yet, you turned to him and your smile somehow got even brighter, as if you had been waiting for him for a long time.
ㅤAfter that, you never once left his life.
ㅤFor him, you were his weakness, but also all the source of his strength. You were a mere mortal, your fragile body could barely stand the force of wind itself. And that was one of the reasons that for a long while made him want to keep his distance, but with every smile, every laugh, wave from afar, and plates of Almond Tofu left on the railing from you, just made him want to get closer.
ㅤAnd you fit him so perfectly. In the way you weren't scared of his demons and instead trusted him with all your heart, never failing to still surprise him. In the way you never stood for defeat, always kept trying and also gave him many chances.
ㅤXiao learnt to enjoy life a bit more, to smile a tad bit more often beside you, and he was still amazed at how much he could still learn new things every day with how long he already has lived.
ㅤYou smiled each time he got angry while fretting over your safety, he hated it but he could never take it too seriously for so long. All he could do was protect you as long as he lived, while not wanting to know about how fleeting your life would be.
ㅤXiao knew your time together would flow past him in a second, but allow him to be selfish, even if for just a while, and keep you by his side for a while longer. Just a minute more, just one more eternity.
ㅤIf he could choose, he would choose you in all lives, in all the universes you always spoke about that you believed existed. If they really do, allow him to follow you into all of them. Even if it takes everything out of him.
ㅤHe just doesn't want to lose you too. So, just love him until the stars call your name back to them, and even then, don't forget him. Call his name again, once more.
ㅤAnd he promises you, he'll find you, no matter where you are.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ㅤAt first, Baizhu thought that he definitely shouldn't fall for you, no matter what. There was many more things far more important than a simple chemical reaction of the brain. It would eventually go away if he just focused on something else.
ㅤInstead, the feeling only grew, like roses wrapping itself around his heart, it's thorns picking at his body each time he saw you, standing by yourself from afar.
ㅤIt was to the point even Changsheng started to complain, the doctor's brain seeming to fog up at every moment, his every thought showed him you. Every word that came out of his mouth when alone were words about you.
ㅤEvery time you two interacted was like a new rose bloomed in his chest, a newfound hope of a better tomorrow. With each of your smiles he felt like he could live for a minute more. Your presence was healing and like a breath of fresh air in his tight schedule.
ㅤEvery encounter became longer and longer, until you decided to stay and never really left. Until his things became yours, and now there was a space for your clothes in his closet. Until he could kiss at your hair anytime he wished to and none of you flinched at the contact anymore, for it was never accidental now.
ㅤBaizhu found himself starting to look at another path to follow besides the one that laid before him all his life. Baizhu biggest desire was to search immortality, but now, he sometimes had the foolish thought of what would immortality mean if he lost you in the end?
ㅤIt was a short path, but it had you. Holding his hand for as long he had left. And he wondered, was it worth it? But how could he hope to be this selfish?
ㅤSo he found himself at an impasse, stuck at a crossroads, where none of the paths ended in happiness.
ㅤChoosing immortality, he eventually would see you pass before him, your life going away at a minute's time for him. While choosing you, he would forfeit all chances to save so many more people. And also possibly cursing you to be without him in the end.
ㅤIt was an impossible choice that hung heavily over his heart. But all you did was smile while remaking the braid in his hair, your fingers still as gentle as ever even with the pass of years.
ㅤAnd you would tell him, your voice only but a whisper, "Dear, no matter what, I'll love you to the end."
ㅤAnd he believed you. For you was one of the last things he had that he truly loved in this life.
ㅤTime was oh so cruel, withering away things before they could even breathe properly. Taking things without permission and always leaving with no apologies.
ㅤBut time was also the one who brought you to him, and also the one that seemed to stop, even if for a little while every time he saw you smile.
ㅤAnd Baizhu realized, it didn't matter if it was only in an ephemeral life, or the flow of a thousand lifetimes. He would still love you in the end. To the end, and even after that.
ㅤThe doctor would eventually have to choose between you and the undeniable fate. But for now, allow him to be oblivious. To dream of something he never dared to, a tomorrow that had you in this little life together. Of a family.
ㅤAllow him to hold you closer, until you're engraved in his entire being. So that no matter what happens in this future, he'll always know how your love tasted. And how it was to love your thoughts, and the way you softly spoke his name, to ache for your presence and wish to be by your side.
ㅤSo that he never forget how your hands felt while caressing his face and his back when he got tired and sick. How it felt to finally be taken care of, after years of lonesomeness. That he never forgets how you looked like when you smiled whenever he woke you up with breakfast in bed, or how your hair smelled after the shower.
ㅤBaizhu knew either way his time was running out, and that even forever doesn't last long. But he figured it would be fine, because getting to meet and love you was worth it all. So allow him to offer you his last breath of life before the end.
ㅤThus was eternity, an everlasting feeling.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ㅤWriothesley had met you so long ago, even before he knew what the Fortress of Meropide was. Before, when his life was more full of life and starry skies. And he still remembers how you looked, your smile with a few teeth missing, and the way your knees were always bruised.
ㅤAnd he also remembers when everything fell apart. The day you slowly changed, when you felt like growing up faster, and time took away your innocence far too quickly.
ㅤWhen your smile disappeared and all there was left were apologetic looks from afar and your presence vanishing from his life.
ㅤIt started there, and thus his life was over in a blink. And he was stuck in the Fortress, no more than a teenager.
ㅤWriothesley also grew up after that, your face slightly fading out between memories and responsibilities.
ㅤUntil, he was met with sunshine one day again. When his body was weary and fallen. The first time the Duke ever fell sick, it was then he saw you again. A dreamlike presence between his fever thoughts.
ㅤYou looked older now, but you were still as beautiful as the day he saw you last.
ㅤThe last thing he heard before passing out was your voice, telling him to sleep a bit. And he thought, "What an idyllic dream."
ㅤBut you were still there when he awoke again and it took his breath away in an instant, still thinking that maybe now he was hallucinating. And it took you the longest time to explain that you were working in the Fortress now.
ㅤSometimes, Wriothesley would still suddenly ask you, "Why here?" and to that you would say, "Just because.", but you knew and he also knew that deep down, it was for him.
ㅤHe couldn't help the way his heart still fluttered like that of a teen experiencing his first love, just at the thought of you. He couldn't help but think the Fortress looked a tiny bit more bright with your presence there. That his life was replenished with so much tranquility.
ㅤAnd he would forever cherish every word you said to him.
ㅤHe was so stupidly in love with you, he knew. And probably had been for the longest time now.
ㅤAnd it didn't take long for the love between you both to flourish, and everyone would be a fool to say now that in the murky and damp Fortress of Meropide no flowers could bloom.
ㅤHis infatuation for you was like the gentlestest of lullabies, and the way he cherished you filled your heart to the brim until it overflowed. And no matter how much it spilled, you never minded it too much.
ㅤYou both had lost so much to the ebb and flow of time, and had sacrificed so much to arrive where you are now. So, for today, and the days that'll still come, you allow each other to this serendipity.
ㅤDancing under the faint lights and the seawater smell, while staring into a vast ocean through the giant window. To Wriothesley it was like watching an endless sunset by your side, even though there was no sun to be seen. None of you was especially skilled in dancing, your arms intertwined in all the wrong ways and your legs kept getting tangled up. But still, you remained joined in this messy dance.
ㅤWriothesley felt at peace whilst listening to the calm beating of your heart, and you eased up while hearing his relaxed breathing.
ㅤThe sound of your loud giggles filled the hall with happiness, and the faint music coming from the speakers was all that could be heard for now. And all the guards knew to keep to themselves and not approach that place, not to break the dome that seemed to envelop you both, like your love for each other was an entirely different reality.
ㅤStill, they smiled between themselves. Their boss, the ever so collected Duke, finally the happiest he could be. And they had no one to thank but you for it.
ㅤAnd if Wriothesley knew what they all thought and whispered among themselves, he would agree. For you had brought back his soul from the pit not even he knew it had fallen to. He entrusted his heart wholeheartedly to you, and he would do it a thousand times again.
ㅤSo break his heart a million times, and he would still look at you with a smile on his face and tell you, "Thank you, sunshine."
ㅤAnd if you choose to love him back with all you have, oh be prepared, for he will definitely, without a doubt, never let go of your hand again.
ㅤAnd to you, he wishes to be forever bound. For forever is contained in even a minute and your souls were akin.
Tumblr media
ㅤLove was something that made people irrational and out of their minds. That's what Al Haitham thought. So why, why was he constantly thinking about you and felt like he was finally out of the darkness, like a blind man trying to follow the sound of a beating heart. And your heart out of all.
ㅤAl Haitham hated fate more than anything, for if it existed, it meant the choices humans made were all already prescribed somewhere like a finished book with no room for change. Although he didn't really mind living a life like that, he also couldn't help but sometimes feel a bit rebellious.
ㅤBecause there was simply no way to explain the way you were always within the vicinity, no matter where he went to escape from this wretched play and relax, besides fate itself acting. You, and your dense smiles and thoughtless words.
ㅤHe held no hostility towards you, he told Kaveh one day, to which the blonde man could only but sigh in despair and exasperation.
ㅤ“Yes, yes, sure. Whatever you say! Not like you're just feeling this way because you can't understand them like you wished.”
ㅤThat made Al Haitham stop and think for a while. Was that really the real reason that seeing you and talking to you ignited such a flame in his heart? That he simply wished to understand why you had such innocent ways to see the world?
ㅤThe Scribe was known to be a blunt man, someone no one ever wished to cross paths on a normal happy day. But why, he just couldn't seem to want to break your worldview, and he could never say any harsh words to you. The shine in your eyes always stopped him before he could even open his mouth.
ㅤAnd before he even realized, he would get himself staring at you one too many times in silence, while you waited for his opinion on some book you had read. He would do things he never would before merely because you mentioned you liked them.
ㅤ“I like this brand of tea from Fontaine very much! It is very sweet.” Al Haitham remembered what you said one day while sitting by his side in the library, while he was pretending to read again.
ㅤ“It's bitter…” What was even wrong with your taste buds after all?
ㅤHe now could only stare at the romance books piling up on his desk, and the way you seemed to be scribbled on all of the sentences there. Your heart was ascribed to him in all his favorite pages and you were written with all his favorite words.
ㅤWhat was special about you and what made you different from others? He wasn't so sure, but at the same time he dared to say he didn't care.
ㅤHe even sometimes would write his name along yours before catching himself and wondering if he was going insane. And now, he could just smile helplessly.
ㅤIt was a wonder to everyone how sudden Al Haitham seemed to change, not knowing how much he had mulled over it before. The fact he loved you was something he eventually had to come to terms with, and once done, it was quite easy to go on.
ㅤIf someone told him before that one day he would fall this hard for someone, to the point that their presence would be like an apricity in his life and the panacea to all his woes, he would've scoffed at them.
ㅤHow foolish. He thought, but he still allowed you to intertwine your arm with his while strolling around the city. He still stroked your face with gentleness whenever he was close to you, still twirled your hair in his fingers when he got bored from his paperwork, while you sat by his side, involved in your own work.
ㅤEven so, Al Haitham didn't mind it at all. In fact, if fate gave him a chance to go back, he would do everything the same way again for it led to you. He didn't mind the looks people gave him after seeing his love for you, for even before he was already a lunatic. So may he be even more of a lunatic for you.
ㅤIndeed, fate didn't seem all that bad after a while. If it allowed you both to stay together for as long as he could, then Al Haitham, and you, didn't mind being entangled on such unexplainable and pointless things.
small extra:
“You're so troublesome, you know?”
He had once again been dragged into one of your shenanigans around the Akademiya, and obviously you had gotten caught. If it wasn't for his position as the Scribe, he could only fathom what would have happened instead.
It definitely wouldn't include you cheerfully walking besides him like this was the happiest day of your life.
“But you still gave me a very long speech about why you love me anyway on that day during my break from studies, remember?” No matter what, your words never failed to make him shut his mouth immediately.
If there was anyone in the world that could win an argument against the Scribe, that would be you.

Pressed Periwinkles
characters: scaramouche, venti, zhongli, raiden shogun (ei), yae miko, yelan, al haitham, kamisato ayato
cw(s) : none. just some very much needed comfort and fluff to all my stressed birdies. there... maybe some implications but don't worry your pretty head over it and enjoy being spoiled and spoiling them <3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
──⚝ scaramouche
Whenever something troubles Scaramouche, he seeks you out to press his ear to your chest and listen to you heartbeat. If you were to ever bring it up to him once he's recovered although, he'd never admit to literally have knelt for hours suffocating you in his embrace. Not like it affects him at all, he could stay in the position for days and weeks if he wanted, the only detriment would be you (ugh, the fragility of the mortal body). You cannot see his expression in moments like those but you feel every shift of emotions through the strength in his grip waxing and waning or from how closer and closer he buries his face in your clothes, desperate to not lose the timbre of your heart. Not even the hymns of the winds, streams, birds or fairies would rival to the simple marching of your soul ; the simple fact of your existence. He would be betraying himself if he never admitted to feeling envious of you, how lucky you were to be gifted with such a beautiful heart. His thoughts would wander to days long past, days painted in regret and blood, grip tensing so much it causes you pain but then, as if sensing his distress you run your hand through locks of the deep night, your free hand securing him and he curses himself. Wanting to slap the fool in him for even having that thought — because it is not the heart itself that is beautiful, it is the bearer and, he vows to eternalize its blessed prance.
Scaramouche is not a verbal person in terms of comfort, thus, his care is shown through the protective embrace he engulfs you in ; now, close to where his heart is supposed to be. It's a re-confirmation of your position, it's a reminder of your power over him, it's a beckoning that says—just say the word and I'll bring the world down to its knees. You hear it, loud and lucid and it intimidates you a little. The awareness that you hold such power over the Harbinger, over this being neither human nor divine, capable of any command leaving your lips — the absence of a heartbeat from such proximity intensifies your shudder. Worse, you feel the unadulterated sincerity behind this silent declaration. Doubt bubbles in your soul, were you even deserving of such love? Wouldn't it be just using Scaramouche if you were to confide? A stolen look to his eyes has you halt, taken aback by the significance barely contained in those cryptic orbs and you understand. Not uttering a syllable yet, you merely shuffle closer for ; what response proves itself appropriate to the man who gazes at you like you're the soul centerpiece of his world, rivaled by nothing bar the confines of it?
──⚝ venti
Venti knows you're feeling under-the-weather even before you do, all it takes is for you to release the first sigh after reaching home and he's already cradling and cooing you. You can't even find it in yourself to be bemused, melting in the bard's lulling embrace, the beat of the rocking of his body in symphony to the soothing lyrics leaving his lips. You let yourself sink further in that cocoon, far, far from the worries that were chasing you. For you know that as long as Venti's here, everything will be fine. If you're in the mood to rant, he's just the perfect person for it! No kidding, he matches every disbelief laced around your sentences, the dripping sarcasm and "can you believe this person's audacity?!" What you don't know is that he knows what/who's troubling you way beforehand (he's the wind, silly) but, Venti will still listen and be bewildered, annoyed, mad. His carefree smile hiding the schemes brewing in his head to teach annoyances a lesson. You'd never be notified of this shift of attitude though, much too smothered in his pampering.
“My dear Cecilia, why do you fret? You will get through it all, just like all the times before and then, you'll look back, smile and be proud of yourself. So stop worrying about something you've already won!”
And when he's certain you've drifted off to the land of dreams, he lets the muscles of his face relax, the shine of his emerald orbs fade in the slightest. The zephyrs cease their tunes and his grip tenses, firms and borders on desperation. He clings to you as if you'd be blown away like the dandelion seeds should he loosen his hold, he doesn't dare to think of that outcome. All things will wear out by the flow of time, even the strongest Cecilia will oneday take the wind's hand. He knows and Celestia, does he hate it. Despite the knowledge that only serves to burden him, he still indulges ; in hopes that you wouldn't leave him just yet, not so soon, not so suddenly. These momentary wisps of solace keep him sane : the warmth of your body molding in with his, your steady breaths and small mumbles of incoherence — all reminders that no, you're right here, safe in his arms.
So the winds rest, too.
──⚝ zhongli
Zhongli is his own genre when it comes to comfort. It's unpredictable yet never unwelcomed. There's a silver of sophisticated charm lining his actions, a touch of solemnity as you walk under falling autumn leaves arm in arm. Zhongli is not one to let any gesture of affection go to waste, specially if it were to be spectated upon by prying eyes. He considers every touch, every word and every moment shared with you to be exceptional. This sentiment materializes dutifully, too. You cannot think of a single memory with him proven trivial and neither can he with you. Liyue Harbor looks up to you two's unalloyed affections, too. Elders often seen smiling coyly, reminiscing their youthful day as children stare doe-eyed in curiosity, later re-enacting (or trying to) how tenderly the Consultant took your hand to his lips while playing house. You're the role-model couple of the City of Contracts, often analogized with the tale of the late Rex Lapis and his beloved and, whenever someone would bring the legend up, you two would share a shining gaze holding secrets between you two solely which instantly has the speaker feel perplexed. You two would simply dismiss it with the same smile and urge them to continue their tangent.
You, who always covers up Zhongli's blunders of leaving his wallet. Your disappointed sigh and stare doing nothing as he listens to your lectures, borderline enjoying the fiesty side of you. Arguments don't even occur between you two because of the level of mutual understanding you have with each other. You both value privacy, therefore, only show vulnerability in each other's sole company. Zhongli always cradles you in the firmest, safest embrace when your nightmares get too graphic to bear ; wiping your tears and whispering to you the tales of the days the Seelies pranced around every inch of Teyvat and the Moon Sisters would bless the land with their light. Every time, you drift away to sweet dreams of those days of peace. You love to comb and braid his hair, humming forgotten tunes as you do so and Zhongli never feels more at peace. At times like these, it's as if you're in your own little world of boundless serenity, safe from both the mortal and divine's scrutiny.
──⚝ raiden shogun (ei)
To Ei, you're the reason achieving Eternity is so important, so crucial. You're the reason she pushes through despite her grief, loneliness and despair. It's hardwired in the Shogun's constitution, too ; Eternity and You are beside each other. You're the lone candle lightening her darkened euthymia, one she will not allow to wane. Being the soul fuel of her actions might be a little bit overwhelming sometimes. Since she's always putting you before herself, you have to be the one to anchor her to the present and remind her that she's just as (if not more) important. Ei loves you, but you love her, too. It pains you to see her suppress so much pain, it frustrates you that she's not even giving herself the minimum care and how constantly runs from her trauma instead of learning to grow from it.
Which is why, sometimes it has to be her that's pulled away from her meditation to your arms, it has to be her laying on your lap with a hand loosening her braid in an inclining to let go, even just for an hour or so. Sometimes, she needs to forget about everything else and keep her attention on you as you lecture her non-stop. Often times, it flies over her head due to her stubbornness but since it's you... she tries her best. Eternity could wait, the Heavenly Principles be damned, right now, all that mattered was her and you.
──⚝ yae miko
You find it a little unfair, how the kitsune understands you even better than you do yourself. She effortlessly picks up on the slightest changes of your quirks to reach the conclusion that something is wrong. Once she's certain, she'd call you over to her side and pull you to her lap as a shrine maiden prepares tea. A stack of light novels set beside her along with all your favourite treats and you know you're up for a night of pampering and cooing. Your frustrations disappear quicker than electro seelies as she reads aloud the words to you in that smooth voice of hers, other hand occasionally shifting between running it through your hair or along your body and holding various treats for you to taste. When the night has deepened, the stack of light novels finished with and the lantern light has dimmed, she finally inquires of what (or who) exactly troubles you — if you haven't fallen asleep by then already. You, at rare times, want to refute to all her babying ; you cannot be blamed either, having Yae Miko's undivided attention can get a little overwhelming sometimes but the resistance is extinguished just as soon when you remember why you get this exquisite treatment. She's wasted no breath making it clear, too.
Miko loves both your rebellious spirit and how well you take it all. To her, you're just the perfect partner to get through a dragging existence. There's not much she demands of you either ; you just have to be by her side when she calls you (which is..a lot, frankly) and let her take the lead. It's peak entertainment for Miko as she spies the green gazes from her peripheral, aww, look how envious everyone is of you two! While she finds mild entertainment in jealousy of other people, that cannot be said when the monster decides to probe her, too. Kitsunes are territorial and regardless of how much of a refined one Yae Miko is, she's still not completely immune to it. No one will know of these irritating feelings bubbling in her chest unless she wills it. For the most part, she's chill because, she of all people would know that a random mortal is no threat to her or the trust you two share. But do not be mistaken : should an actual threat occur, she'll make it very clear to who you belong to.
──⚝ yelan
Yelan does not even know where to start when it comes to you and neither does she know where to put an end. Yelan despises sweets, you cannot go a day without that additional dose of serotonin ; she prefers chillies in everything and you cry if there's extra dash of pepper in the curry ; Yelan dances with the danger, you love your inner peace more than anything and yet, somehow, both of you fit together like soulmates. It stirs mixed reactions among people, too. Some think you're undeniably cute together while others raise their eyebrows in appraisal. She could care less, but she knows that you care a lot about other people's opinions so, she tries her best so that you'd remain innocent from their unnecessary judgement. It isn't difficult for her either to pull the strings and everything, benefits of being in the shadow.
There's much people are ignorant to, for example, how ruthless you can get with your words should anyone insult your loved ones, how unfairly good you handle bitter things, how unafraid you're of breaking the rules should the occasion call for it and she could go on. Her favourite memory with you would always be that time a handful of nosy people were jabbing at your relationship with her, even going as far as to throw suggestive comments at you right in front of her. Trivial matters such as this don't bother Yelan on normal occasions but due to her mood being already sour that day she lost her temper, how dare they? She was one breath away from causing a carnage until you stopped her, looked them dead in the eye, pulled her to press a kiss just shy of her lips and told them to pollute the air somewhere else — the memory still makes her swoon. Of course, she didn't waste the opportunity to join in, leaning to your already flushed ear to whisper loud and intended for others to hear, "You missed, darling."
(Those idiots never bothered you two again.)
──⚝ al haitham
Al Haitham who is like your personal bed from how often you fall asleep sitting on his lap. You don't need to worry about falling or the cold because he never loosens his hold of you, pulling his cape over your form like a cocoon when he notices your shivers. The intimacy is wordless yet conveys so much more than words could hope to express. It's such a win-win for him, too. He gets to hold you while reading in peace? To say he loves it would be an understatement. People also tend to bother him less when they notice this act of intimacy— and by people, he means his annoying roommate who but gags everytime he sees you draped over Al Haitham and him holding you like you're the most precious thing in Teyvat.
(Kaveh's just salty because he's single and lonely.)
There's another thing Al Haitham adores, looks forward to even ; lazy mornings with you, plus points if it's raining and none of you can go to work. Even if you insist on going out in that weather, there is no way the Scribe would allow it. Trapping you in his strong arms and being so affectionate you have to check if it really is the Al Haitham or not. The Akademiya won't be obliterated if you two skip— took a break for one day, come on, love. Your resolve would break pretty soon, too. How can it not when he's being so cutely clingy? So you two stay in and ruminate the remnants of your night's dreams in each others arms, the pitter-patters of rain and rumbles of thunder but background noise. For a spilt second, Al Haitham remembers the two keys still in his possession and the door being locked : aha, no doubt his roommate would have a lot to say (scream) about that. He notices your shuffles and a quiet ‘what's wrong?’ which he dismisses through a chaste kiss atop your head and beckoning to return to sleep.
──⚝ kamisato ayato
It's basically hardwired in Ayato's brain to seek you out when things get a little too strenuous. He likes to lay his head on your lap and just... enjoy the feeling of your skillful hands combing through his hair, hum him a song too, won't you? He's all yours to spoil. In this position, probably the only thing that would make him get up is if the Kamisato Estate caught fire. You shower him in all the affection you have to offer without hesitation, your way of saying thank you for everything, thank you for your hard work.
Since Ayato was deprived of the fancies of an ordinary child, he has an affinity for mischief and the twisted entertainment from rule-breaking. Nothing would make him love you more if you were to just randomly sneak in his office and whisk him away for some minutes. Running away from his duties wouldn't lessen them, he's aware. But just the thrill that comes from these little rendezvous washes away his fatigue and lethargy. It's both of your little secret, it's dangerous and frankly just plain indulgence. That would never stop him taking your hand and smiling like a teenager in love every time he hears you sing, let's run away?

4 YEARS AGO, SPRING.
One of the things Ayato loves about you is how there’s no one he can imagine spending the rest of his life with but you.
You’re not only his lover, but his person. Someone who can understand him, tolerate him, comfort him, love him, see him for who he is without intentions of taking advantage of his family’s name and business.
Despite the differences you both have, you two managed to make things work together as a couple. Despite the fights you both have, you two managed to fix it under communication and clearing up everything. Despite everything, the both of you are still here together.
Because of you, Ayato understands why people love movies so much. Because of you, Ayato understands why people love playing games with friends rather than studying all day and preparing for the future. Because of you, Ayato understands why people love.
Because of you, Ayato understands himself more than before.
So who could blame him for wanting to spend his future with someone who made him happier than anyone can?
Sure, you may be like everyone else, but there’s no one else who could make him feel so in love but you.
Just seeing you sleeping beside him on days when he’d sleep over at your dorm makes him want to wake up beside you everyday. Just seeing you laughing and smiling at his words while walking with him to the university or to the dormitory makes him want to go wherever you go. Just seeing you being embarrassed whenever you can’t find the answer to a homework makes him want to go through all your obstacles in life with you.
Just seeing you looking at him the way he looks at you makes him want to love you again and again.
Just seeing you, he couldn’t imagine his life to turn out like this.
One of the things that Ayato feels burdened with about the Yashiro Company is its past.
It’s long forgotten for how long ago it was, but it will remain haunting to those who are aware of it and will never be at peace with the information they’re burdened with.
Those include his great-grandfather, grandfather, father, perhaps the current CEOs of the two other businesses that are a part of the tri-business, and unfortunately Ayato himself.
He was shocked when his father told him back then that the Yashiro Company was involved with the fall of the Kaedehara Company, a well-known company in the past that was respected by everyone until an incident occurred.
The Shogun Company, now called Tenryou Company, is the biggest business known in Inazuma back then, so when they accused the Kaedehara Company for fraud, everything went down for the Kaedehara family.
The CEO of the Tenryou Company caught Kaedehara Yoshinori, the CEO of Kaedehara Company back then, tampering with important documents red-handed, and despite the protests and excuses, Yoshinori was faced with the court trial and the dire consequences.
Not only did the Kaedehara Company face bankruptcy, they also faced backlash by the media for doing such a thing, leading Yoshinori and the Kaedehara family to go into hiding for good until they’ve been long forgotten many years later.
However, there was one thing everyone didn’t know about.
There were two more businesses that were involved in the incident. One is the Hiiragi Company – who was actually the one behind the fraud but managed to frame Yoshinori for it – and the Yashiro Company – who was the reason why Yoshinori was involved with the scene in the first place.
Ayato’s great grandfather didn’t mean to let this happen. All he wanted was for Yoshinori to obtain the tampered documents while he was distracting the CEO of Shogun Company, only for the CEO to catch Yoshinori at a bad time and ruin the Kaedehara business for good.
As much as Ayato felt saddened from the tragedy of the Kaedehara family, he couldn’t help but resent it so much. After all–
It was the main reason why he ended up marrying the person he doesn’t love.
Ayato found out one night, he went back home from your dormitory to see Hiiragi’s current CEO, Hiiragi Shinsuke, having a quiet conversation with his parents as they failed to notice Ayato hiding nearby listening to it.
In all honesty, Ayato never liked the Hiiragi Company’s CEO. There was always something about him that made the young man feel… uneasy.
At this moment, the uneasiness grew ten times more.
“...Mr. Hiiragi, what’s the meaning of this?” Ayato’s father asks, a frown is evident on his face.
The man across the table smiles in response, as if he didn’t ask the most absurd thing.
“I’m offering you a chance, Mr. Kamisato.” Shinsuke Hiiragi explains. “You can let your son marry my daughter and I’ll destroy all evidences regarding your… grandfather being involved with the infamous Kaedehara incident as well as the evidence that your father’s involved with the car accident that the heir of one of Tenryou Company’s branches, Kujou Kamaji, died in.”
Ayato’s eyes widen, his breath hitches.
“But… Mr. Hiiragi,” Ayato’s father hesitates for a moment, “I would have agreed on this arrangement had it not been the fact that my son is with another. I simply cannot accept that I have to force my son to leave the person he loves–!”
“If you refuse my offer, then I have no choice but to release all the evidence, Mr. Kamisato.” Shinsuke interrupts in a taunting manner. “Would you rather see your ancestors’ entire work into ruins and let your family face backlash from the media, or would you rather let your company continue its successful years without any worries and burdens?”
The young man watches as his parents look at each other in deep thought. It’s obvious they didn’t want to sacrifice their son, but neither did they want to face cruel consequences that their children will face.
However, it’s also obvious which option is the best.
Which is why Ayato walks away from the dining area without listening to another word from the three, his heart heavy and aching on the thought of what happens next.
He couldn’t sleep that night.
He couldn’t stop thinking about every single possible way he could do to prevent this, and all of them led to one thing.
Even if Ayato did find a way to reject Shinsuke without the dire consequences, what if the cruel CEO decided to hurt you to make him say yes to the marriage?
Ayato couldn’t let that happen.
If breaking up with you and marrying someone he doesn’t love is the only way to protect both you and his family from harm, then so be it.
Knowing you, you’d definitely try to find a way to do something about Shinsuke, and Ayato certainly cannot let you do it – not when Shinsuke is perhaps one of the most dangerous person who won’t hesitate to kill you.
There's no doubt that the Hiiragi family was also the one behind the death of Kujou Kamaji.
If there’s one thing that’s strange about the car accident, it was the fact that the cause of it was Kamaji being seen falling unconscious while driving before hitting another car and causing an explosion, leading the Tenryou Company and the police to investigate what made the passing heir to do such a thing, only to find nothing that could help them.
It’s obvious that Shinsuke would be the first person who’d be out for Kamaji’s head given that he’s the one marrying his daughter, something the CEO disapproves due to how Shinsuke isn’t fond of the Kujou family.
However, what most people didn’t know about the infamous accident was how Ayato’s grandfather is the last person Kamaji talked to before his death.
His grandfather was seen by the CCTVs of the Yashiro building talking to Kamaji and led the younger man to run away to his car before the accident occurred, leading the old man to delete the CCTV tapes in fear of people thinking that he was possibly behind the accident. This soon became one of the Kamisato family’s biggest secrets as it was a risk to the business’s reputation.
Knowing this fact, Shinsuke probably got his hands on the tapes and will use it as one of the pieces of evidence that the Kamisato family was involved with the death of Kamaji despite it being far from the truth.
It didn’t matter to Shinsuke it seems, not when the CEO can forge all of the evidence with the help of whoever has the Hiiragi’s family’s back and make it look as if the Kamisato family was behind all of it.
Knowing this, the heir knows Shinsuke won’t hesitate to go after you if he could get away from the two incidents.
Ayato’s heart felt heavy from the thought of what he’s going to do.
Just thinking about not being able to wake up beside you everyday makes him feel hopeless. Just thinking about not being able to be there for you when you cry or be upset over something makes him feel as if he’s separated from you by a wall made of bedrocks. Just thinking about you looking at him as if he’s the worst person to live on Earth makes him feel suffocated.
Just thinking about not being with you is enough for him to feel like he’s nothing.
The only way to keep you safe is by making you avoid him, so he has no choice but to… but to…
“No, I can’t hesitate right now.” He whispered to himself, putting his hands on the sides of his head in frustration. I have to do this for my family… For Ayaka. He thought to himself, closing his eyes shut with a shaky sigh.
Even if he has to make himself become someone you despise with all your heart, even if he has to force himself to lose the future he dreamt of that has you, even when his body feels like it's on fire as his heart weighs as much as the burdens on his shoulders at the thought of not being able to be the person you’ll spend with for the rest of your lives, even when he doesn’t to go back to his bland life before he met you, he knows he has no choice.
As the future heir of the Yashiro Company, he must choose the best choice for everyone.
By the end of the night, Ayato had made up his mind.
In order to make the breakup look sincere to you, he must avoid you for weeks.
He remembers watching romance movies to learn and understand how he can possibly win your heart, but he also learned how he can possibly break your heart.
Now that he thinks about it, this can be a practice for the both of you to live without the other.
He goes back to riding his family’s car towards the university instead of walking with you there, trying to focus on anything that won’t make him regret and run off to where you are (he doesn’t notice the way Ayaka looks at him in concern at the sight of her brother clenching his hands as if he’s holding himself back from something).
He goes back to being holed up in his bedroom studying instead of running off to Komore Cafe to study with you, trying to be busy to stop himself from thinking about you and wonder how you are (he doesn’t notice how his desperate attempts never work. Not until he finds himself staring at the wallpaper of his phone that has you in it).
He goes back to spending time with the Student Council for the rest of the day instead of spending time with you in the university, trying to distance himself from you in order to get used to what the rest of his life will be (he doesn’t notice how Student Council officers, particularly the president and the vice president, wonder what made him look as if he’s been through hell with those now dull eyes of his).
He goes back to being his old self before he met you.
All of this with an excuse of simply “forgetting” about your plans and being too busy to be able to be with you (when he’s always ready to drop everything for you).
The amount of time he had isn’t enough to prepare him for this moment.
By the time he deems it’s time to tell you, you both agreed to meet up with each other in the cafe after not seeing you for the past weeks. It felt like he hadn't seen you for years if he had to be honest.
His mind instantly went numb when he entered the doors of the cafe that his best friend owns, his heart weighing him down from what’s about to happen.
“Ayato! You came!” You spoke up excitedly when you spotted your lover, standing up from your seat and rushing towards him for a hug.
He finds himself spreading his arms wide, knowing that this will be the last time he’ll ever hug you like this.
He closes his eyes shut the moment he feels your arms wrapped around him, shoulders relaxed from your familiar scent and warmth that you have whenever you hug him, clinging into you closer to him as he cherishes the hug.
Ayato had to stop himself from hugging you again the moment you let go of him.
“Come, I already asked Thoma to order the usual. I need your help with a certain topic that I think you might know about.” You explained, holding your lover’s hand as you drag him towards the table you always go to.
He’ll just indulge himself first before letting go.
Just once, and he’ll do it.
He can’t do it.
Why can’t he say it?
Ayato was silent the whole time for the past hour, something he thinks you don’t notice since you’re too distracted by your homework that he helped you with. He couldn’t find the words to end the relationship he loved and devoted himself to for the past years, not when he feels so content from just being here with you.
It was only until you’re almost done answering your last homework when he finally spoke up.
“I cannot do this anymore, ( Name ).” He said suddenly, looking up at you from his drink after staring for a concerning amount of time. “Let’s… break up.”
This is it.
He sees the way you stopped moving your pen from his words, and it felt as though the world had gone quiet from how silent the both of you are.
“...You’re kidding… right?” You asked, looking up from your homework to look at your boyfriend with wide eyes. “Surely.. You’re just doing this to make me pay attention to you, right?” You let out a light chuckle, hoping to the gods above that your assumption is correct.
He couldn’t say it. Not when his mind is flooded with dread, heartache, and misery.
Regardless, it was enough for you to stop chuckling, your nervous smile slowly disappearing from your face. “...You’re not kidding?”
Ayato nodded with an apologetic look on his face, trying to hold himself back from taking everything back and lying that all of this is a prank. “You know me well lo– ( Name ). I apologize for the sudden… proposal.”
No. This isn’t a proposal. This is him breaking off the one thing that made him feel complete and he can’t do anything to stop himself for the sake of his family. You drop your pen slowly. “What… Wait, I don’t understand. What went wrong?”
He lets out a shaky breath, something you mistaken as a soft sigh, and he stares back at your upset eyes. “Nothing went wrong ( Name ). It’s not you.”
It’s me. I’m the one who’s wrong. I need to do this to keep you and everyone safe. He thought to himself.
“Then what is it?” You asked in a hurt tone.
The man pauses for a moment. The next thing he’ll say will forever be engraved in his mind, knowing that it’s the biggest lie he had ever told in his entire life.
He inhales deeply and responds to your question. “Unfortunately I’ve… fallen out of love with you.”
Ayato feels as if his heart went on a flatline from those words, he couldn’t breathe properly as he has the urge to curl up in misery that he had to lose you this way. He just needs to get away from you for good, tell his parents that he has broken up with you, and pray that Shinsuke won’t go after you.
He had never expected for this to end either.
“How long, Ayato–”
“I truly apologize, ( Name ).” Ayato said as he started to pack his items on the table, trying to look as unfazed as possible. “I.. I know this might be too cruel of me to say this but.. I’d like you to stop hanging out with me anymore.” He adds.
You stayed silent, something that made him want to kneel down in front of you and reassure you that everything will turn out okay for you in the end, knowing fully well that this will be a rough time for you and him.
He can’t answer your question. Not when all of this isn’t even true in the first place.
“It was nice knowing you, ( Name ).”
He hopes that this will be the last time he’ll see you, for he isn’t sure if he’ll be able to hold himself back from being in your arms the next time you and him meet again.
As he continues to walk away from the cafe, he sends a text to his driver that he’s ready to go, not noticing how you’re walking towards him until he hears you.
“Ayato, please! Just tell me what went wrong!” You exclaimed loudly as you followed your now ex boyfriend down the streets, ignoring how some people passing by looked at your direction strangely.
“Don’t bother following me, ( Name ).” Ayato spoke, glancing at your direction with a warning look on his face as he continued to walk. For the sake of you, please don’t come after me. He thought.
He stops his tracks when you feel him tugging his clothes, not wanting to drag you and accidentally hurt you from walking with you holding onto him.
“Please Ayato, I deserve to know what made you no longer love me!” You begged in a desperate tone.
He sighs in defeat, his shoulders slumps.
Ayato turns around in your direction, a dull look plastered on his face. “Is it really necessary to have a reason why? I suddenly just don’t. Don’t make this harder for yourself than it is for me.” He lied. He still loves you, there’s nothing that will make him feel otherwise.
“Of course it’s necessary! You can’t just not love me anymore–”
“And yet here we are.”
Words die instantly in your throat and you stare at him in bewilderment, your hand still holds onto his clothing. He wants to punch himself for making you hurt.
“...Do you really not love me anymore?”
He stares at your eyes, thinking of what to say before letting out a breath that he didn’t know he was holding.
“Would you believe me if I said yes?”
Your breath hitches.
Your long silence was enough for Ayato to completely turn around and continue walking towards the bus stop, leaving you standing there dumbfounded and in disbelief. If only you knew how much he wanted to run to you and make it up to you, how desperate he is to find a way to not let the situation end like this,
He couldn’t.
For someone who doesn’t regret his choices, this is perhaps Ayato’s first time regretting a decision.
What can he do about it? Nothing. Absolutely nothing.
.
.
.
By the time he comes home, he looks at his parents with a sad smile on his face.
“Mother, father,” He called them, slowly dropping his bag from his shoulder. “I have.. News for you.”
From the way he looks, his parents immediately became concerned for what he has to say. “...What is it, Ayato?” His father asks. The three didn’t notice how a certain person was somewhere nearby listening to the conversation in curiosity and confusion.
“I know about… Mr. Hiiragi’s offer and the consequences. So I decided to break up with ( Name ).” Ayato explains, unfazed by the sounds of his mother letting out a shocked gasp as his father stares at him in disbelief.
“Ayato you what…?”
“It’s alright. I know this is for the best of our family.” Ayato reassures them, walking towards the hallway nearby. “You may call Mr. Hiiragi about the news and I’ll listen to what he has in mind about the arranged marriage. I’ll be in my room for the rest of the day, I don’t think I have the appetite to ea–”
Suddenly, he felt warm arms wrapped around him.
“Ayato…” Ayato realizes his mother is the one who’s hugging him in such a vulnerable matter. “I’m so sorry you had to go through this.. I wish there’s a way for you to not push ( Name ) away, you deserve to be with them so much and I can’t believe you had to do this for us–!”
“Mother, please.. Don’t cry..” The heir spoke softly, trying not to show his devastation. “I’ll be fine. ( Name ) will be fine too.”
“We.. have to make up a lie that we disapprove of ( Name ) due to the fact that they’re not like us.” Ayato’s father spoke. “It will give those who know about it all the more believable reasons why you’ve broken up with them.”
Hearing that made Ayato’s heart sink even further. “...I understand.”
It took a long while before Ayato is finally allowed to go to his room after a long conversation between him and his parents, who both never fail to remind him that they’re sorry for him to experience this.
As soon as he closed the door shut behind him, Ayato finally broke his facade. The rest of the day was filled with him being devastated at losing the only person he loves, his heart aching nonstop from the heartbreak he endured after breaking things off with you.
“I’m sorry ( Name ), I’m so sorry my love.” He whispered, not noticing how his bedroom door was opened slightly by a certain person he holds dear, whose heart breaks at the sight of her dear brother being miserable for the first time all because of a sacrifice.
That day was the day Ayato died, all that was left was what remained: the heir of Yashiro Company.
And the day after his death was just as painful as yesterday.
Even when he broke your heart and left, you still come up to him to try and ask him why on Earth he broke up with you, only for him to push you away and avoid you despite wanting nothing more than to tell you. It hurts to try and get used to ignoring you instead of letting you come to his arms every time you come up to him.
It’s for the best. He’d rather tell you years later than tell you when you’re in potential danger now.
It’s ironic how he’s experiencing miscommunication when it’s his least favorite thing in romance movies.
By the time you stopped, he could only hope that you understood that some things can’t be out in the open.
Until he finds out that you’re now avoiding everyone.
It’s a habit of his to check a certain street that his car passes by to see you, so when he couldn’t see a sight of you for the next few days, he was confused (and worried). Not to mention how whenever he spots your friend group, you were never there with them at all.
When he discovered that you’ve stopped hanging out with your friends for “projects” from Thoma, he felt even more worried.
Why are you going through your heartbreak alone?
Ayato couldn’t sleep well after finding that out – scratch that, he wasn’t able to sleep well at all ever since he found out about the damn arranged marriage. All he could think about is your well-being and whatever on Earth you’re doing.
He wonders how you’re going through your heartbreak, if you’re not beating yourself up thinking that it’s your fault he left, if you’re blaming yourself for the breakup, and so many more thoughts that just breaks his heart further.
It frustrated him to no end that he can’t do anything about it, not when he has to avoid you in the first place. The only thing he could do at this moment is to just hope you’re not pushing yourself too far.
Sometimes, his mind trails off to what could’ve been if you and him weren’t together.
If he hadn’t fallen in love with you, then you would’ve been happier without any worries besides your assignments instead of suffering from his mistake alone. If he hadn’t fallen in love with you, his life would’ve still been as bland and busy as ever and accept the arranged marriage without regrets. If he hadn’t fallen in love with you, then he wouldn’t have experienced what it’s like to love and to be the so-called mischievous and playful Ayato that you grew to love.
He knew he didn’t deserve someone like you, who’s better off with someone who doesn’t have a secretive family past, someone who doesn’t have the chance of getting forced to an arranged marriage, someone who would never break your heart even if the circumstances are dire.
You’re better off with someone like Thoma.
Ayato doesn’t want to admit it, but he’s quite envious of his best friend. Not only does Thoma know you since you were kids, but he has always been one of the first people you’d go to for advice and comfort should Ayato be unavailable to do that for you. Unlike him, Thoma’s never as busy as he is and, if he dare say, knows your interests more than Ayato does.
Unlike him, Thoma would never give up on your relationship.
Which is why if there’s a possibility that you’ll move on and fall in love with someone else, then he wouldn’t mind if the person is Thoma, who would surely treat you well.
“Kamisato.” One of Ayato’s security guards knocks at his bedroom door, causing the man to wake up from his thoughts.
Ah right, he has things to tend to.
“You may come in.” Ayato spoke up, turning around to see the door opening. “I’d like you to do a favor for me while I’m off tending to my studies.”
“What would you like me to do, sir?”
“You’re aware of the dormitory of my university, yes?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Then… Could you visit there and pick my items in my… friend’s dorm, perhaps?”
Before the security guard could reply, someone else suddenly knocks on the door, causing Ayato to look at his door in confusion.
“Brother,” Ayaka’s voice is heard from the other side of the door, “may I come in?”
His shoulders relaxed knowing that it’s simply his dear sibling. “You may, what brings you here?”
Ayaka shyly opens the door, smiling apologetically. “I uh… I couldn’t help but overhear your conversation and… I’d like to pick your items from your friend’s dorm if that’s alright.”
His eyes widened in surprise. “Are… Are you sure, Ayaka? What made you want to come visit the dormitory?”
“I’m actually planning on visiting there for my friend, Yoimiya. I wouldn’t mind picking the items up for you while I’m at it.” She explains. “Is it alright, brother?”
Ayato thinks about it for a while. Is it really a good choice to let Ayaka come visit your dorm?
As though the younger woman could read his mind, she instantly adds, “If I may be blunt.. I think ( Name ) wouldn’t mind seeing a familiar face by their door. I’m sure they wouldn’t mind seeing me.”
“How did you know it’s ( Name ) you’re going to?”
“...Their dorm is the only dorm you visit, is it not..?”
“...”
Ayato couldn’t help but smile. “Alright, fine, I see no harm in letting you visit ( Name ) for my items. Thank you for offering, Ayaka.”
The woman nods in acknowledgement with a smile before she looks at the security guard and gestures to him to be dismissed, who didn’t hesitate to leave the room seeing how he’s no longer needed.
“I shall leave as well, thank you for letting me do this, brother.”
.
.
.
By the time Ayaka comes home, it’s already dinner, and Ayato instantly notices the relieved look on Ayaka’s face.
He couldn’t help but be curious if something good had happened between his sister and ex lover.
“...How are they…?” Ayato asks.
The woman stays silent for a moment, looking down at the box that contains Ayato’s items and gifts he gifted for you in deep thought.
She then smiles gently. “They’re better than before to be honest.”
Those words were enough to make him feel relaxed.
“That’s good.. Let me pick that up for you, I’ll take it to my room while you go to the dining room and eat.”
Ayaka nods in response, lending her sibling the box. “I will wait for you there then.”
As Ayato starts walking towards his room, he looks down at the box to see the items that were once in your dormitory that he loves to visit.
Ah, so many memories. It’s as if the man is going down the memory lane.
He could recall every single joyful moments the items – especially the gifts he gotten for you – brought, like the time when he won a game booth during a school event and got you the prize you wanted, the time when you both made bracelets to match one another, the time when he made an exceptional origami that he gifted to you, the time when you both celebrated your one-year relationship anniversary in Komore’s Cafe, and surprisingly, the time when you both confessed your feelings to one another.
Unfortunately, just like how he deals with the memories he has with you, he has no idea what to do with his items. He couldn’t throw it all away, nor can he just simply ignore it.
Perhaps.. It wouldn’t hurt to display these in his room, where he’s the only one who would stare at it as he remembers the value it holds in his closed heart alone until the day comes when time finally follows his memories and precious things.
Just thinking about the memories made Ayato realize that even when he has a future spouse to marry, he will never be able to experience the things in a way he did with you, and will never feel whole again.
It didn’t take long before Ayato eventually met his future spouse.
Shinsuke was more than ecstatic when he heard news that Ayato’s now single and accepted his offer of the arranged marriage, causing the CEO to instantly come to visit the Kamisato Estate a few days later to discuss certain things about his daughter, Hiiragi Chisato.
The first thing Ayato needs to do is to win his daughter’s heart, then when Chisato wishes so, the CEO will start the wedding arrangements immediately, all the while Ayato wonders what the woman he’s going to marry is like.
Ayato imagined Chisato to be some cruel and vicious woman who probably saw him in those parties and suggested the marriage to her father, and he felt even more miserable from just thinking about the fact that he’d possibly marry a terrible person and have Shinsuke, a potential murderer and a cruel man overall, as his father-in-law.
But his thoughts instantly changed when he saw her by the balcony.
Shinsuke emphasized the fact that Ayato must attend the upcoming party that both Hiiragi family and Kamisato family would be attending, wanting the man to come up to his daughter and get to know one another, so the blue-haired man had no choice but to attend the party despite being someone who prefers to not be in public’s eye.
Hiiragi Chisato was a lonely soul, if he had to put it. She didn’t look like someone who’d plan evil doings nor someone who’d be the daughter of some cruel man. She just looks like a woman who longs for something in her life.
He knows not to judge a book by its cover, but sometimes, a cover has to be interesting enough to make a person be curious and look at what's inside.
So he finds himself heading over to her, already knowing what to say in his head.
“And what brings such a lovely lady such as you being so lonely for an exquisite party, if I may ask?” Ayato spoke smoothly, watching as the woman looked at him in surprise.
Chisato couldn’t bring herself to look him in the eyes, her words stumbling. “I-I uhm.. I just feel a bit overwhelmed from so many people attending here. I thought it would be best if I took a breath of fresh air.” She explains, her fingers fidgeting.
A fake small chuckle comes out from his mouth, though his shoulders slightly untenses from how nice the woman seems to be.  “That I can understand. Not to mention how I have to make some small talk with half of the attendees, which bore me a lot.” He comments, leaning against the railway and looks at the view in front of the two lonely souls. “Your name is Hiiragi Chisato, correct?”
She lets out a small squeak. “You… You know my name?”
“I know everyone’s names at the party.” He spoke. “My name is Kamisato Ayato, I am delighted to make an acquaintance, Miss Hiiragi.”
“O-Oh you don’t have to.. Call me that!” She said immediately. “You can just call me Chisato, Mr. Kamisato.”
Ayato pauses for a moment from her words, taken back from how she’s so casual around him.
A small smile appears on his face. “If that’s the case, then you may call me Ayato, Chisato.”
That night, the both of them talked about a few things about themselves, be it what they do in their free time, their favorite food, favorite events that are held every year, and so on and so forth. If it weren’t for the marriage, the blue-haired man would’ve been happy that he made friends with someone who’ll surely be willing to be a good help to the Yashiro business in the future.
Eventually, the two of them started talking about the arranged marriage.
When Ayato brought it up when the opportunity arose, he was surprised to see how the look on Chisato’s face was anything but excitement.
If their genuine conversation earlier wasn’t enough to convince Ayato that she didn’t want this marriage either, then it’s the way she looks right now that does the trick.
“...I’m not sure what to feel about this marriage,” Chisato spoke honestly with an apologetic smile. “I was.. surprised when my father brought up that he’ll set me up with you, especially when I’m still moving on from my lover’s.. death.”
Ah, so she doesn’t know that he had broken up with his lover.
The man tries to prevent himself from asking Chisato if she could change her father’s mind about the marriage, knowing that it will only be a helpless move given that the woman would have definitely asked from the start.
“My condolences, may he rest in peace.” Ayato said with a sad frown. “If it makes you feel better, the marriage is a shock for me as well, and I’m not sure how this will go for us.”
The woman feels relieved from hearing those words. “I’m glad we’re on the same page then.”
It took a minute before Chisato spoke up again. “Even though we don’t have feelings for each other, I’d like to put in some effort in this marriage at least. We will be spending time together for the rest of our lives as soon as we graduate, after all.”
Ayato feels his heart sink, now remembering that fact.
“...I understand. I shall try to do the… same.” was the only thing he could muster, knowing that he’s still not ready to even accept this cruel fate of his.
That was the last time he saw the woman, and there’s no guarantee that the Hiiragi won’t be at the next party that the Kamisato family will also be attending.
What can he do about it? Nothing. Absolutely nothing.
As days grew by, Ayato felt more restless to the point where he didn't want to go home early and study. All he wants to do is something that could make him forget. Forget about the ridiculous marriage, forget about the heartbreak, and forget about you.
Although he looks like he hasn’t been through hell at all on the outside, the inside is like an ocean during a stormy night. Only time could tell how long it’ll take before he snaps.
Even when he hasn’t seen you for weeks, you’re still haunting him. Even when he closes his eyes and sleeps, you’re still there in his dreams – the one where he wants to be forever because it’s the only place where he has you in his arms with no worries.
Out of hopes of keeping his thoughts at bay, Ayato volunteers to stay on campus after classes to help with some more Student Council activities.
Thanks to this, it was the reason why he saw you again.
He was on his way out of the university an hour after he finished his extended activities when he noticed your familiar figure nearby. Seeing how you didn’t notice him, he decided to try and go to another direction to hide himself away from you, only for you to notice him and be surprised.
Thankfully, he instantly looked away when your eyes landed on him, causing him to act like he didn’t notice you and went in another direction to go away from you.
His heart sank when he heard you letting out a sob as soon as he was out of your view.
Just hearing such a sound would’ve made him run up to you and comfort you to the end of time, but now that he has no right to do such then there’s nothing he can do than to be out of your way and out of your life.
The next day after the incident, Ayato quickly backed out from his extended stay in the campus for the Student Council much to his comrades’ confusion.
He decides to go back to being occupied with both of his duties as the heir and studying hard. Although it doesn’t exactly help shoving his thoughts away, it’s better than bothering you.
Sooner or later, the reminder of his marriage eventually comes.
It started when Ayato encountered Chisato once more at the university, specifically the place where all the buildings connect to one another, and the man dreaded the thought that people will start being curious about their relationship and spread rumors about it, which could lead to you hearing them all and be even more heartbroken.
What can he do about it? Nothing. Absolutely nothing.
When Chisato said she’d put effort in the marriage, Ayato didn’t think she meant she’s going to start now when they haven’t even been officially engaged yet.
Not a week even passed when the young man received letters from the woman. Each note was nothing but wishes that his day would go well, something that made him couldn’t help but scoff.
His day will never go well when he has just left the only love of his life.
Just when Ayato thought the letters were the only thing he’ll get from Chisato, the woman had also started to occasionally give him foods that she accidentally cooked too much, something that made his smile even more strained around her.
There’s no food that could make him feel happier than the ones you make for him.
Eventually, Chisato squeezed into his dull life no matter how much he didn’t want to.
She became his partner in events that both of their families are invited to, not noticing how much he wanted to tell that he’s not dating her to people who went into conclusion that they’re both dating.
She then became his new studymate and visits his estate every now and then, not noticing how he prefers to do things alone ever since the breakup.
She became a part of his friend group, not noticing how his friends are hiding something that she doesn’t know about Ayato.
Not to mention how she’s also the person he walks with towards the university, not noticing how he sometimes stares at a certain street and locations that reminded him all too well of someone who’s special to him.
At this point, Chisato truly became a part of Ayato’s life.
What can he do about it? Nothing. Absolutely nothing.
But, if he had to be honest, he appreciates Chisato’s efforts. He always reassures himself that at least the woman isn’t so cruel than he thought she would be. He feels bad that he couldn’t tell her about you, not when he knows she’ll try to convince her father once again and possibly make Shinsuke believe that Ayato put her up to it—
“Ayato? Are you alright?” His thoughts were instantly cut off by the sound of his best friend’s voice calling him, causing the blue-haired man to wake up from reality and look at Thoma in confusion.
The blonde-haired man frowns at the sight of his friend spacing out. “Is something… wrong?”
Ayato hesitates for a moment before a stiff smile slowly forms on his face.
“Everything’s alright. Thank you for your concern, Thoma.”
If anything, Ayato is glad that no one batted an eye at the fact that he and Chisato started hanging out with one another, thinking that they’re both close friends thanks to their families. So that has to mean something, right?
Apparently not. Not when he could feel the intense glares of two certain women who are considered one of your best friends ever since he entered the cafeteria with Chisato.
Now that he thinks about it… How would things turn out when he and Chisato started dating?
He found that one out very quickly.
It was during another typical visit from Shinsuke when he told Ayato the one thing he dreaded to hear.
“I heard from my dearest daughter of mine that there will be an upcoming school festival for your university by the end of spring.” Shinsuke said, stirring the cup of tea that one of the servants provided. “It’s been a long time since I’ve experienced one in my school… How long was that?”
Ayato couldn’t help but have a bad feeling down his stomach. Usually, Shinsuke is a man who goes straight to the point, so seeing him talking about… things that he should be talking with an old friend about, is getting on his nerves.
“If you’d like to experience it again, the festival is open to everyone outside the school as long as they know a student there.”
Shinsuke smiles. “That’s good, but a CEO like me is too busy to do such indulgence. I’m quite afraid that my dearest daughter will be alone throughout the festival…”
Ah there it is.
“If you could, Kamisato Ayato, would you accompany Chisato the whole time and perhaps make it official?”
Ayato’s strained smile almost falters.
The silence fell upon the room. All that was heard are hushed footsteps from those who reside in the estate as well as noises from the beautiful yard that’s just outside of the lounge both Ayato and Shinsuke are in.
It took a few seconds for Ayato to finally speak up. “...I’d be delighted, Mr. Hiiragi.”
“Thank you, Kamisato.” The elder man then stands up. “I shall take my leave knowing that my daughter will be in good hands for such an occasion. I will come back soon to discuss certain matters with you regarding your relationship, specifically how long the both of you will keep your relationship a secret.”
Ayato stands up as well. “Very well, Mr. Hiiragi. Would you like me to accompany you to the exit..?”
Shinsuke shrugs him off with a laugh. “Oh don’t worry about me, thank you for your kind hospitality, Mr. Kamisato.”
Just after the CEO slides the door open, he stops for a moment. “Or should I call you son-in-law now? I can imagine you and my daughter getting married already, haha!”
The younger man tries not to clench his fists.
“...I’m fine with any… Mr. Hiiragi.”
Just to get this over with, Ayato decides to ask Chisato out on the day before the festival in Komore Cafe.
In a way, it’s like he’s reliving the time when he asked you out on a date in Komore Cafe. Though, that didn’t make things better for him – if anything, he feels like this is so… wrong. He doesn’t want to see Chisato as a replacement of you nor does he want to replace the memories he cherished with the ones that have Chisato in it.
Chisato was, at the very least, delighted and enthusiastic when Ayato asked her out, giving the man a sign that she now has feelings for him much to his dismay.
What can he do about it? Nothing. Absolutely nothing.
He could feel Thoma’s eyes on his back, causing him to feel even more guilty that he’s doing it here.
If only Thoma could understand once he finds out.
DAY 1 - START OF FESTIVAL
.
.
.
DAY 5 - END OF FESTIVAL
The festival was all but a blur.
The whole time, Chisato was taking Ayato all over the festival, wanting to try a lot of things to which he had to oblige. Although he wasn’t looking forward to this occasion, it didn’t mean Ayato wasn’t enjoying the festival. Fortunately, Chisato is a pleasant company to be with, and he knows he has to make efforts in this marriage as it is fair to the woman who also didn’t want it.
However… If he had to be honest, the only thing that made the festival a bit better is the fact that he hasn’t seen you for the past week, and he wonders whether or not you’re having fun now that you’re back to spending time with your friends (an information that he found out from Thoma himself).
He finds out that question when he hears a familiar laugh that he hasn’t heard for so long.
While Chisato was busy talking to one of her friends who found her, Ayato instantly turns around to look for the source of the voice. Just once, he wants to see you again to see if you’re alright than before.
To his relief, you are having fun.
You’re a few steps away from where he is, it’s enough for you to not realize that he’s in the same area as you, laughing along with Ei and Miko, who are enjoying the festival just as you are.
Ayato smiles genuinely at the sight, relieved that you look better than the last time he saw you.
It’s at that moment when Ayato realizes that even when he’s suffering from Shinsuke taking advantage of him, he knows that you’re somewhere out there safe and now happy, then that’s enough for him to go on with his dull life that he didn’t wish to come back to.
4 YEARS LATER, SPRING .
As Thoma left Ayato’s office after their agreement about inviting you to the wedding, Ayato couldn’t help but feel nervous.
Surely if he’s careful enough, then Shinsuke won’t find out about you being his ex and will simply think you’re just an old friend of Ayato’s in college just like his other friends. He just needs to make sure that he’s alone with you when he tells you the truth, but won’t risk telling you about Shinsuke given that you’d probably be anxious for the rest of your life.
Suddenly he remembers something.
Ah right… Tomorrow’s the day.
He supposes it won’t hurt to come visit tomorrow, it’s the least he can do as a member of the Kamisato family.
.
.
.
After Ayato places the flowers on top of Kamaji’s grave, he starts to pay respect as the Kujou family stands idly by in silence. Although the supposedly heir isn’t considered as a close friend of Ayato’s, Kamaji is still a friend who didn’t deserve such cruel fate.
It’s truly unfortunate that this day was the day when he lost two of his friends.
As soon as Ayato says his condolences and farewell to the Kujou family, he heads towards two certain graves that’s quite a bit far away from where Kamaji’s is.
Another thing that the public doesn’t know about Kamaji’s car accident was the people who were in the scene.
There were three deaths who were involved from the accident. The first was of course Kamaji, but no one knew who the two other people that died from the accident besides the Kamisato family once again.
The two innocent people who were hit by Kamaji were associated with the Kamisato family, Tomo and the last member of the Kaedehara family, Kaedehara Kazuha.
Kazuha was a dear friend of the Kamisato siblings who died too soon.
They weren’t close as far as Ayato was aware of, but that didn’t mean his death made the heir’s grief go away so easily. Kazuha was kind, and a close friend of Ayaka’s due to how they’re batchmates in their school.
So when the two Kamisato siblings heard from their father that the two unknown innocent people who died was one of the people they’re friends with, they were distraught.
He sometimes wonders if Kazuha would’ve been great friends with you.
MONTHS LATER, AUTUMN.
The day after the joint bachelor party, Ayato received a surprise visit from a familiar guest of his in his hotel suite.
“...( Name ).” He spoke in disbelief, watching as your face fell at the sight of your ex.
“...Ka…Kamisato..” You replied. “I apologize, am I.. bothering you and Chisato right now?”
Ayato blinks a few times before he immediately shakes his head. “No, don’t worry. Unfortunately, Chisato is not here at the moment since she’s currently going out with her friends right now.”
“Oh…” You spoke softly, looking away from his gaze. You honestly hoped you’d see Chisato, that way you’d get along with her more and become friends. “...I uh.. I just came to visit because I forgot to give you two a wedding gift.”
Ayato looks down at the box you’re holding and he manages to read the brand. Ah, champagne flutes..?
You then add, “And… I want to talk to you about what you told me before.”
The blue-haired man’s eyes lit up, opening the door wide for you to come in. “Of course, please come in.”
The both of you stayed silent as you entered their hotel suite, unsure what to say to one another.
“You can put the gift there on the table and sit down by the sofa. I can fetch us some drinks since I’m sure it must be exhausting for you to come all this way here.” Ayato spoke up, heading towards the kitchen without letting you protest that he didn’t have to do it.
By the time he comes back, he places a glass of water in front of you before sitting somewhere nearby. He would be lying if he said he’s not nervous about this situation.
You slowly took a sip of the drink, avoiding eye contact with Ayato.
It’s only a matter of time before the both of you have to talk about it.
Ayato decides to be the first one to speak about it. “I… I really do apologize for everything, ( Name ).”
You sighed. “...I know. I think you and I are thinking the same thing, we want to get this settled with, don’t we?”
“Correct.” He responds.
You nodded slowly. “I do wish you told me this before when you had the chance. I would’ve understood more as to why you did it and maybe this wouldn’t have been so painful for me.” You put the glass down on the table, still refusing to keep eye contact with him. “However, I suppose you have your own reasons for why you didn’t tell me.”
Ayato nodded sadly. “I did.”
You took a deep breath, staying silent for a couple of minutes. “I’ve thought about it at night ever since you told me.” You confessed. “I didn’t know what to feel. Should I be mad? Upset? Sad? Distraught? I didn’t even know if I wanted to pity you or not.”
You then look at where Ayato is. “I still can’t forgive you for what you’ve done to me of course, and.. Honestly almost three days isn’t enough for me to process this whole thing you and I have — and I doubt I’d be able to make up my mind by the end of the trip — so I think it’s best for you and I to go our separate ways for now.”
The blue-haired man nods slowly, smiling sadly. “I understand. I know it’s too much for me to ask if we could be friends again after so long so I’ll respect your wishes.”
You look at him with a grateful look. “Thank you, Kamisato.”
“Anything for you, ( Last Name ).”
You then decided to take your leave. “It was nice talking to you. Congratulations on your wedding again.”
Ayato slowly follows you as you head towards the exit of his suite, wanting to escort you out. “It’s no problem, ( Last Name ). Thank you for the gift as well.”
“Goodbye, Kamisato.”
“Goodbye, ( Last Name ).”
And just like that, the door closes shut behind you as you start to walk away from the room.
Ayato lets out the breath he didn’t know he was holding as soon as you’re gone, and for the first time, he feels as if a weight on his shoulder has disappeared.
Although he isn't considered your friend, he knows it's enough for him knowing that the both of you have settled the one thing that's eating you both alive.
When he decides to return to the living area and picks up your glass, he couldn’t help but notice the gift-card you wrote on top of the gift you gave him.
“Congrats on your wedding, Mr. Kamisato and Ms. Hiiragi!
– Sincerely, ( Name ) ( Last Name ) and Diluc Ragnvindr”
The last two words made Ayato raise an eyebrow in confusion at the sight of another name besides yours.
Since when did someone like Diluc Ragnvindr himself be allowed to share a gift with someone he doesn’t know well?
Unless…?
“No.. He doesn’t see them like that.” He mumbled to himself, walking away from the box to wash the glass as he tried to push his thoughts away.
He could only hope you don’t see Diluc that way either, if you found out about his true self, then only Celestia can tell how you would react.

DAN’S NOTES !
To simply put, Kazuha was long dead before meeting you. His death as well as him being a part of your life as a mysterious friend whose motive is to push you to move on are honestly one of the plans I’m going for before I begin to write the prologue of evermore.
The reason why he’s with you and wants to help you is because he knows how much Ayato is so fond of you based on countless times when the blue-haired man talked to Kazuha about you as well as how Kazuha feels like he owes Ayato a lot. So the least he can do is to be there for you when you’re alone.
Of course, by the time you start to no longer be alone, Kazuha starts to fade away, and he knows that as soon as you come back to your friends once again, he can finally go to the afterlife knowing that you’ll be okay.
also a summary of what ayato means by diluc’s true self.

Notes: Just a cute idea I had when my writers block finally cleared up, Inspired by my other fic “Exorcizing evil spirits… and Xingqiu’s Antics” but instead of Xingqiu & Xiangling it’s Ayaka and Thoma, as previously stated above I had a bad case of writer’s block that suddenly cleared up so get ready for a ton of fics! O(≧∇≦)O, fluff, “there’s only one bed” trope near the end <3

“Oh, how interesting.” I hear Ayato muse to himself. “Hm?” I half-heartedly reply. I turn to look at Ayato as he goes through important documents for the Yashiro Commission.
“I’ve received an invitation from Calx to attend the Windblume festival. You remember him right? I believe you two had a brief interaction.” Ayato tells me. He glances at me with a curious expression on his face. I go silent as I try to recall who Calx is. For some reason I’m instantly reminded of the Irodori festival, and soon enough Calx’s face pops in my mind.
“Ohh, Albedo!” I abruptly shout as I remember who Calx is. “Oh, you know Calx’s real name?” Ayato asks in shock. “Yes, actually! After you went to tend to other business I actually stayed to chat with Albedo longer than you think I did. We surprisingly got along pretty well and our conversation was very interesting. No small talk with him.” I chuckle to myself as I recall the moment Albedo’s bored expression turned into one of surprise. I’m assuming I answered a question differently than he originally anticipated I would, and from there on our conversation flowed naturally.
“I see… Well, this makes a lot more sense now. Calx mentioned you in the invitation.” Ayato tells me with something in his voice that I can’t quite pinpoint. “Oh really!? Let me see!” I excitedly exclaim. I’m currently sitting next to Ayato so I reach over for the piece of paper in his hand, but he suddenly moves it out of my grasp.
“Oh- sorry. Is there something in there I’m not supposed to see?” I ask sheepishly before I quickly return to my previous position. “It’s not that, I’m just surprised you get along so well with.. Albedo, was it? I heard he could be hard to converse with.” I raise a curious eyebrow at Ayato’s carefully calculated words, but he turns his face away so I can’t gauge his expression. “I’m surprised you care as much as you do. …Are you jealous?” I decide to tease Ayato in a smug tone.
I move closer to Ayato so I’m leaning against him, and I use a finger to poke his cheek in a teasing manner. “H-Hey! Stop that. Of course I’m not, I would never indulge in such a childish emotion.” Ayato grumbles. I’d believe him if the blush on his face didn’t give him away.
Wait… why would Ayato be jealous of my relationship with Albedo, anyway? It’s not like we’re dating or anything…
…but …the blush on his face…
I silently scold myself and abruptly stop that train of thought. There’s no way the Yashiro Commissioner would have a romantic interest in me. To start with, I met him through my friendship with Thoma and we just so happened to hit it off. We’ve been spending more time together as of late, but I’m sure it’s only because it’s nice to have a friend around while you’re doing something as boring as paperwork.
With those thoughts plaguing my mind, I disregard the possibility that Ayato may be jealous of Albedo. I sigh with dismay and move away from Ayato, ignoring just how close I was to his face. “Sorry about that…” I mumble more to myself than him. Ayato’s facial expression changes into one of confusion at my sudden mood change, but he chooses not to question it.
“Well, in regards to the invitation,  I’ll only accept it if you accompany me.” Ayato tells me. I suddenly whip my face towards him to gawk at him in surprise. “Wait, what!? Why?” I ask, failing to mask my obvious shock. Ayato chuckles slightly at my dramatic reaction before he answers. “Simply because I must have you accompany me.” Is his cryptic answer.
I blush a bit at the teasing tone he uses, but I don’t let my thoughts wander again. Besides, it’s not his fault I ended up catching feelings for him. I’m sure there are other potential partners out there who are more suitable than I am to be the Yashiro Commissioners’ significant other. I’m just a regular citizen from Mondstadt who moved to Inazuma.
Although, that is why when I met Thoma we became fast friends.
As I think about my old life in Mondstadt Ayato continues to speak. “You used to live in Mondstadt, correct? I’m sure you miss your old home and would like to visit. Especially during a festival.” I can’t help but internally swoon at the thoughtfulness in Ayato’s voice. “I-I’d love to… thanks, Ayato.” I reply with deep gratitude. I can’t contain the smile on my face and I use a hand to cover it as I look away.
“Aw, how cute.” I vaguely hear Ayato whisper under his breath. “H-Huh!?” I stutter as I turn my head to look at Ayato, to confirm if I really heard that or not, but he’s busy gracefully writing a response to Albedo’s invitation.
Hm… Maybe I mistook something he said and turned it in my favor?
I feel my cheeks burn with embarrassment, so I take a moment to gather my bearings and wait for Ayato to finish his written response. “Alright, perfect. We set out tomorrow.” Ayato happily mutters to himself. “TOMORROW!?” I incredulously shout. I shoot up from where I was sitting as I gap at Ayato. “Why of course. I want you to have a comfortable journey so I’d like to leave a bit on the earlier side. …Is that alright with you?” Ayato hurriedly asks me, with concern lacing his angelic voice.
His expression conveys his concern as his pretty eyebrows draw together. “If you need more time we can-” “N-No! That;s perfectly fine!” I unintentionally cut Ayato’s inquiry off. Ayato’s warm smile in response causes my heart rate to quicken. “Alright then. Albedo also mentioned we can bring whomever we want along, so I’ll bring Thoma. I have no doubt in my mind that he’ll prove to be a trustworthy traveling companion, and I’m sure he’d love to visit Mondstadt again as well.” Ayato tells me. “I assume you’ll ask Ayaka to tag along?” Ayato asks me with a smug undertone, since he knows he’s right.
“Well… I’d love to, but… is it really wise for you, Thoma, and Ayaka to leave the estate at the same time?” I voice my concern. Ayato hums thoughtfully to himself before he stands up in front of me. I try not to blush as I stare at his pretty face in front of me. “I’ll make the necessary arrangements, so don’t mar your beautiful face with a frown. Especially not over the affairs of the estate. As her older brother, it is my duty to ensure that she’s able to have fun experiences and enjoy her life to the fullest. She needs a break just as much as I do, if not more.” Ayato fondly speaks of his sister.
I struggle to contain the warm smile on my lips upon hearing his heartfelt response.
I think back to how I met Ayaka, Thoma, and Ayato and how I got to know them. Thoma introduced me to the Kamisato siblings, and I hit it off surprisingly well with Ayaka. We became friends quickly, but it took a bit longer for her to fully open up to me. Ayato on the other hand was more apprehensive and would hardly spare me a glance. Once I was closer to Ayaka, Ayato invited me to his office space one day. He originally questioned me about a few things regarding Ayaka and Thoma.
Once he realized I had no intention of using Ayaka for her status or to take advantage of Thoma’s kindness, he welcomed me with metaphorical open arms.
I was invited to his office space more and more often, and soon enough we had gotten to know each other quite well. Ayato allowed himself to be more relaxed around me, and I began to feel a special sense of comfort in his presence. I don’t know when my crush on him came to life, but it was so natural it took me a while to figure out what the fluttery feeling in my chest was. It became apparently obvious to me once I started struggling to meet his eyes and I always found myself blushing around him.
Ayaka and Thoma caught onto my growing crush on the Yashiro Commissioner pretty quickly, but I managed to convince them to stay quiet about it. Frankly, Ayaka thought it was cute and offered to drop hints to her ‘dense older brother’ while Thoma readily agreed to do the same. It took much convincing but I managed to stop their thoughtful yet embarrassing matchmaking schemes.
But knowing those two… if they come with us to the Windblume festival…
I can only sigh to myself as I imagine the matchmaking schemes they’ll pull once they realize all four of us are going together. But Ayato’s right. Ayaka & Thoma should definitely come with us to experience this year's Windblume festival.
“Okay then, I’m going to leave now so I can let Ayaka and Thoma know! We’ll also need to pack some of our personal belongings before we head over to Mondstadt anyway.” I tell Ayato. Ayato nods his understanding, so I give him a small wave as a goodbye before I make my way out of his office space. Before I can walk out I hear Ayato call for me. “Y/n, wait!” At his call, I turn around and curiously wait for him to continue speaking.
I watch in awe as Ayato toys with the edge of his glove, an apparent pink blush on his beautiful cheeks. “I-I’m looking forward to visiting Mondstadt with you….” Ayato wishfully murmurs. He was almost too quiet, but I managed to catch his bashful words. I can feel the blush explode on my face as I try not to squeal at the adorable scene in front of me.
“Oh, of course! I do as well! ….Oh, w-wait! I mean, I AM as well! Haha! …Um.. I’ll see you tomorrow!” I quickly blurt out, trying to cover up my embarrassing blunder.
I leave as soon as possible to avoid making a further fool out of myself, and simply because I can no longer contain my unaltered elation.
I’ll be spending the Windblume festival with my two closest friends, Albedo, and my love interest! What could be better than that?

“Ooo, brother, look over there!” Ayaka excitedly points to something across the waters. “Yes yes, I see, very nice.” Ayato responds to Ayaka in an amused tone. Ayato turns to me and gives me a subtle wink, which I giggle at. “Hey! Don’t wink at Y/n like that after I show you something.” Ayaka pouts. “Aww, just ignore him Ayaka.” I console her. She pouts and leans her head on my shoulder. “Alright…” Her voice quietly trails off, but I can tell she’s secretly enjoying the quality time she’s spending with her brother.
I eye Ayato and his fond smile at the scene before him. He turns towards Thoma, who’s standing beside him, and they begin to talk about Mondstadt. “Are you excited to return to Mondstadt?” Ayato skeptically asks Thoma.
Thoma ponders the idea for a moment, but his joyful response lifts our already high spirits. “Of course I am! Although I am a bit nervous since it’s been awhile and I’m not sure if anyone will remember me, I'm looking forward to tasting native Mondstadt cuisine again!” Thoma’s beaming smile causes me to return one of my own. “Of course Thoma is looking forward to Mondstadt cuisine of all things…” Ayaka cheekily says behind her fan.
Oh, she must’ve pulled it out while I was busy smiling at Thoma.
“Lady Ayaka…” Thoma whines. We all laugh at Thoma’s whiny voice before we continue our lighthearted conversation. The journey to Mondstadt isn’t so bad when you have friends traveling with you.
I shuffle a bit closer to Ayato once I notice Ayaka doesn’t have much space on her side, and at that same moment Ayato shifts closer to me. Our shoulders touch, and although it makes me feel all giddy and flustered inside I don’t dare move. Surprisingly, Ayato doesn’t move either as he continues to talk as if nothing happened.
Whatever the reason may be, I thank the Archons Ayato isn’t moving away. I see a small smile on Ayato’s lips, but I can’t be too sure if it’s due to our close proximity or what he just pointed out to Thoma on the water’s surface.
Either way, I’m enjoying every moment of this trip so far.
 ✧・゚: *✧・゚:*   ♡ *:・゚✧*:・゚✧
“Oh, hello. I’m glad you all could make it.” Albedo greets us at the entrance of Mondstadt. “Hey Albedo!” I gleefully exclaim. I would hug him, but I get the feeling he isn’t into surprise touches. “Is it alright if I give you a hug? Or even a handshake?” I thoughtfully ask Albedo. Albedo silently ponders my request before he gives me a stiff nod of approval. “Um.. do you mind clarifying which one you prefer?” I ask with a soft yet awkward laugh.
“...O-Oh! My apologies. Um…I don’t mind receiving a hug from you.” Is Albedo’s sheepish reply. I happily give Albedo a quick yet warm hug, and at first he’s as stiff as a board. He loosens up after a bit and softly pats my back before I pull away. I have a feeling that’s not something he allows many people to do, so I can’t help but feel a bit special. Ayato emits an awkward sounding cough behind me, so I turn around to eye him suspiciously.
Before I can question him, Ayato puts on a formal smile as he greets Albedo.
“It’s nice to see you again, Calx.” Ayato tells Albedo. “The feeling’s mutual. ..You can refer to me as Albedo here. This isn’t a formal event, so we can do away with the formalities…” Albedo trails off.
A little head pops out from behind Albedo’s leg after he finishes his statement. “Oh, Klee’s here! Hey Klee!” I merrily greet her. “Oh, it’s you! Hello Y/n!” Klee happily greets me. She runs in for a hug, which I happily return.
I had the luck of meeting Klee before Albedo had to return to his work, and Klee seemed to take a liking to me. The feeling was mutual, she is such an adorable sweet girl.
“Come come, I wanna show you around!” Klee joyfully exclaims. She puts her small hand in mine, and my heart feels like it's going to burst from all the cuteness. “Oh of course! Is it alright if my friends tag along?” I chuckle. Klee ponders the idea for a moment as she studies Thoma, Ayato, and Ayaka.
I can feel my heart swell with happiness as she unintentionally mimics the pose Albedo made earlier as he was considering my request to hug him.
“Hm… yes, of course they can! Now come on come on let's go!” I giggle as I allow Klee to drag me around Mondstadt with the others in tow.
 ✧・゚: *✧・゚:*   ♡ *:・゚✧*:・゚✧
“Oh my gosh! I missed this taste!” Thoma and I say in unison as we take a sip of apple cider. We’re all currently having a drink in the Angel’s Share, minus Albedo and Klee.
“Haha, you owe me another drink Y/n!” Thoma replies when I fail to put my hand up first for a high five. High fiving is something Thoma and I do if we say something at the same time, and whoever puts their hand up first gets to have the other person do one thing they want. The other person can’t refuse, so I grumble to myself about having to buy Thoma another drink.
“Ugh, fine, fine.” I gripe more to myself than Thoma. “Thanks Y/n!” Thoma chuckles as he ruffles my hair. I hear Ayato thoughtfully hum to himself, so I swivel around in my bar stool to face him. I watch as he takes a sip of his own drink, and since he’s sitting next to me I notice the way he purses his lips as he considers the taste. “Ahh, so this is Mondstadt’s notorious Dandelion Wine…” Ayato continues to appraise the drink as I watch as his facial expressions reflect his inner thoughts.
I can’t help the giggle that escapes my lips when he makes a particularly cute expression. Suddenly, he looks at me as he raises a questioning eyebrow at my giggle.
“What is it? Do I have something on my face?” Ayato calmly questions me. Before he can finish lifting his gloved hand to his face I reassure him there isn’t anything there. “Oh, then were you just admiring me?” Ayato asks with a teasing lit to his voice. I huff at his teasing but I don’t deny the claim.
“Well, the feeling is mutual. You make the cutest expressions when you’re drinking something you really enjoy.” Ayato coos. He has a fond expression on his face with flushed cheeks that are the slightly pink.
He props his face up against his hand, using the arm that he has leaning on the counter. His other hand continues to hold the Dandelion Wine, and he watches my flustered expression as I fail to give him a proper response.
I quickly turn to face Thoma, silently pleading with my eyes for him to bail me out, but he only raises an eyebrow at me. His eyes are prompting me to capitalize on Ayato’s comment. “Thoma!” I desperately whine to him under my breath. “Oh my goodness, I almost forgot!” Thoma abruptly says.
My expression changes into one of gratitude, but it quickly morphs into one of distaste as he suddenly springs off the stool he was sitting on and motions towards Ayaka. “Ayaka asked me earlier to show her the archon statue in Mondstadt, so I’m going to do that now! You guys can stay here and finish your drinks, don’t rush yourselves to catch up with us! We’ll find you two later. So I can pay now before I leave..” Thoma hurriedly says.
He gives Ayaka a VERY obvious look which she quickly catches on to. She spares a fleeting glance towards Ayato and I before abruptly getting off her stool.
Oh my gosh you two, you’re embarrassing me with how obvious you’re being!!
“O-Oh right! Brother, Y/n, I’ll be leaving with Thoma now!” Ayaka exclaims. “Sure, and don’t worry about the payment Thoma. It’s all on me.” Ayato casually responds. Thoma, Ayaka and I quickly relay our gratitude to Ayato which he shrugs off. “No worries. Now hurry along you two. I heard they’re doing a special event later that they haven’t done before, and I’m sure you two wouldn’t want to miss it.” Ayato slightly scolds them.
I attempt to plead with my eyes for them to stay as Thoma and Ayaka glance at me, but Thoma only winks in response as Ayaka whips out her fan to hide her obvious smile. They soon leave, and I can only hope the butterflies in my stomach don’t cause me to act like a fool in front of the pretty Yashiro Commissioner.
When I turn to look back at Ayato, he’s already looking at me. There’s this knowing look in his eyes, and I have a sinking feeling he’s caught on to the very, VERY, obvious hints Ayaka and Thoma dropped.
“Well now, it looks like it’s just the two of us. How about we finish our drinks before you accompany me to that archon statue Ayaka and Thoma were talking about?” Ayato flirtatiously asks me.
I kid you not, in that moment I felt my very soul leave my body to do a backflip of uncontained happiness before returning to my flushed body.
“O-Of course Ayato! I’d love to, especially with you!” I say as I try to tone down my obvious elation. Ayato chuckles as he finishes his Dandelion Wine, and I follow his lead and finish my own drink.
Ayato pays for all of our drinks despite my insistence that I can pay for Thoma’s and mine. Before Ayato responds to me he leans across the small space between us until his lips are softly pressed against my ear.
“Now what kind of gentlemen would I be if I let a gorgeous person such as yourself pay? It’s on me, you can pay me back later, in... another way.” Ayato whispers in my ear flirtatiously. He slowly pulls away afterwards, but not before I feel his warm breath hit the shell of my ear from him softly blowing on it.
Y/N.exe has stopped functioning.
I can only watch in my purely flustered state as he smirks to himself. He finishes paying as he ignores my jaw is literally touching the floor.
There are many ways I can interpret that last sentence, and judging by the growing smirk on his gorgeous lips he already knows that.
I speechlessly follow Ayato out of Angel’s Share, trying my best not to resemble a Jueyun chili, as the bartender comments on how cute of a couple we are.
“Oh, how sweet. Did you hear that Y/n? The bartender said we make a cute couple. What are your thoughts on that? Hmm?” Ayato asks me in his alluring voice, accompanied by a captivating expression. “I-Um.. actually, are you okay with that? ….Don’t think you could make a cuter couple with someone else? Maybe someone who's more- OMPH” Ayato abruptly stops walking and I end up bumping into his back. “Oh I’m sorry!” I quickly apologize.
Ayato says nothing as he turns around to face me. He takes my chin in his thumb and forefinger, and our faces are suddenly in very close proximity. “I only want to be considered a cute couple if it’s with you. No one else. Is that clear Y/n?” Ayato asks me in a low voice. I can’t contain the dorky smile that immediately curves my lips upwards at his bold statement.
Ayato’s soft intake of breath as he gazes at my lips causes my heart to beat out of my chest.
“Y-Yes…” I whisper. Ayato hums in approval at my understanding. He stalls near my face for a moment, as if he’s internally debating something, but he quickly decides against it.
Before Ayato pulls away he presses a gentle kiss against the corner of my lips. I swear everything around us becomes more colorful, vibrant, and beautiful.
But the beautiful scenery will never outshine the natural beauty of the charming and elegant man in front of me.
“Ayato? Does this mean that…” I shyly begin to ask, but Ayato places a gloved finger against my lips. “That can wait until later, I’d like to show you something before we discuss that.” He tells me. He begins walking, but he stops when he notices I haven’t moved. “Y/n? …Are you alright?” Ayato asks me with visible concern.
What? He can’t be serious.
He’s seriously asking me if I’m okay? After he made my heart run a marathon and my face burn hotter than a pyro vision? He’s now asking if I’m ‘alright?’ Well, no! I’m not! My heart can only take so much teasing from the man I love.
Wait, the man I love?
I’m sure my face must be displaying a priceless expression right now. I’m sure if Ayato has the highly coveted Kamera on him, he’ll take a memorable picture of me.
I close my eyes for a moment to calm my racing heart at the sudden epiphany I had.
After a few moments of silence, with only the muffled laughter of people in the bar as background noise, I open my eyes once again. I’m almost willing to believe Ayato knows why I’m currently clued to the spot, but the adorable tilt of his lips as he watches me says otherwise.
“...I’m fine!” I exclaim once I’ve managed to calm my beating, lovestruck heart. “Hm… you seem a bit out of it though. Here, hold my hand until you gather your bearings. I’d hate for you to get lost.” Ayato’s smooth voice tells me. He gracefully returns to my side and softly intertwines our hands.
I can’t. My heart can’t take this.
I somehow manage to conceal the squeal that almost escapes my lips, and I squeeze Ayato’s hand out of pure nerves and a burst of emotion. Ayato laughs at my obvious flustered state, and he waits for me to calm down before we begin moving. As we make our way to the archon statue, Ayato subtly asks if I’m okay with holding his hand.
“Is this.. Alright with you?” Ayato softly asks, giving my hand a gentle squeeze. I look into his eyes and coo at the adoration I see in them, although it’s accompanied by slight worry. “I couldn’t feel any happier in this moment even if I tried.” I tell him, squeezing his hand in reassurance.
The beaming smile he gives me warms my heart even more. “Well, here we are.” Ayato tells me. I look up in surprise to see the archon statue right in front of us. “Oh, it’s just as I remembered it! It’s still so- wait a minute. …Wasn’t I supposed to be the one showing you around!?” I say, completely baffled.
The genuine, heartfelt laugh Ayato gives me in reply has my lips hurting with how hard I’m smiling.
It’s always nice to see him loosen up and stop being so reserved.
His boisterous laugh is contagious, and I can only resist the urge to laugh along for so long. Before I know it I’m laughing just as loud as he is.
The other people around us look at us with a bit of confusion, but I notice how their own lips form a smile and some even laugh along with us without even knowing the source of our laughter.
 ✧・゚: *✧・゚:*   ♡ *:・゚✧*:・゚✧
Even after looking around the entire city of freedom, Ayaka and Thoma are nowhere to be found. I have a feeling they’re purposefully avoiding our line of sight, but I find it hard to complain since I’ve been walking around Mondstadt with Ayato’s hand intertwined with mine.
“I hope we meet up with the others soon. Albedo did leave us at Angel’s Share to continue entertaining Klee, but Ayaka and Thoma are nowhere to be found…” I trail off. Ayato rubs soothing circles into the back of my hand with his thumb after he hears the worried tone in my voice. “No worries, I’m sure we’ll find them soon. Besides, it’s almost time to begin.” He cryptically tells me.
“Huh? It’s almost time to begin?” I ask Ayato with genuine confusion. “You’ll see soon enough. Is there a place in this city with high elevation we can go to?” Ayato asks me.
“Hmm.. I know a place, but we’ll have to climb a bit.” I tell Ayato. “No worries, I’m prepared.” Ayato tells me knowingly. “Alrighty then, let's go!” I heartily exclaim.
 ✧・゚: *✧・゚:*   ♡ *:・゚✧*:・゚✧
“The view from up here is amazing…” Ayato comments in astonishment. “Of course it is! Although we aren’t really supposed to be up here, hence the sneaking around earlier…” I sheepishly chuckle. Ayato only chuckles in response, and his breath brushes against the back of my neck.
I’m currently sitting in Ayato’s lap since the hand of the archon statue can only provide so much room. I was apprehensive about doing so at first, but Ayato easily dismissed all my concerns as he told me he’d feel rather elated to have me sit on his lap.
“Hey, it’s gotten pretty dark huh.” I muse. I look up at the darkened sky and Ayato follows my line of sight. “Yes. That means it’s time.” He tells me. Before I can clarify what he means, I hear a voice from down below announcing the upcoming fireworks, courtesy of special guest Kamisato Ayato. “YOU DID NOT!?” I joyfully exclaim. I quickly whirl around to face him, and I have to grip his shoulders to steady myself. “Whoops, sorry! Forgot where we were for a moment.. Hehe..” I sheepishly giggle. Ayato gives a soft laugh at my overflowing enthusiasm. “No worries, but I’d look up at the sky now if I were you.” He tenderly prompts me. I follow his gaze, and gasp in awe as the first firework goes off.
“Wow…” I murmur. The fireworks are stunning, and I’m soon enraptured by the dazzling yet carefully crafted display of lights in the sky. “I requested the fireworks to be made by Yoimiya, who gladly agreed. She was.. a bit bummed out that she would be too busy to tag along to the festival with us. But I promised her she has a reserved spot to tag along with us next year.” Ayato tells me.
He trails a slow finger down my arm that causes me to shiver. “I can see why she was bummed out. Yoimiya is so passionate about fireworks, it’s really admirable! I’m sure she’d be as enraptured by these as I am right now, if not more.” I thoughtfully reply. Ayato voices his agreement as we continue to watch the fireworks.
The fireworks unfortunately come to a quick end, but the last firework that lights up the sky has me in complete and utter shock.
“A-Ayato, why did that last firework say ‘I love you, Y/n?’” I cautiously question him. “Oh, that’s because I specifically requested for that firework to be made. When viewed at a higher elevation, it spells out something different than it does to those at a lower elevation. That is why I requested to go somewhere at a higher elevation.” Ayato tenderly explains.
I’m at a loss for words as Ayato smoothes my hair down with his hand. “Now, to answer your earlier inquiry… yes, it means I like you Y/n. More than like, really. We’ve known each other for a long time now, and although I was apprehensive at first you’ve proven that your intentions are pure. It was only a matter of time before I fell for someone like you.” Ayato sweetly confesses his mutual feelings for me, and I have to squeeze his shoulder to ensure this entire day isn’t some sensational dream I’m having.
“B-But why me…?” I ask him, still in shock. “Well there are many reasons. Need me to name a few? Let’s start with… your sweet voice. Your voice is so pleasant to my ears that I have to fight sleep on the nights I’m particularly exhausted. Not because you’re boring, but because your voice puts me at ease. I can allow myself to lower my guard with you, and sometimes that immense feeling of comfort tempts me into a blissful night of sleep. Hmm, what else? Oh, the cute expressions you make, especially the one you make when you’re chiding me for overworking myself. Oh, and the way you’re not afraid to bring up your unique views and opinions with me. You don’t blindly agree with me or heed my every wish without question. Hmm.. what else…” Ayato pretends to ponder. I can’t help the small bashful smile that overturns my lips at his playful demeanor.
“Oh, yes. The way you make me a stuttering, nervous fool as I try to show you only the best sides of me. I’ve surely failed at that haven’t I? Remember the time you walked in on me-” I quickly place a hand against Ayato’s lips, too embarrassed to hear him recount that memory.
He laughs at what I hope is a cute expression on my face. “I can keep going, but I can tell you all the things I love about you later. …Of course, only if the feeling’s mutual..” Ayato trails off, prompting me to give him my answer.
I can’t believe he isn’t 100% confident that I return his feelings with how flustered I was acting around him all day, but the way he subtly worries his bottom lip between his teeth shows that he isn’t 100% sure of himself.
I’m honestly quite shocked by that revelation, since he obviously picked up on the signals Ayaka and Thoma gave him.
Surely he must know I reciprocate his feelings? Actually, I would assume he’s known for a while now, judging by the fireworks he had Yoimiya make specifically for me.
.. Even so…
Looking at his hopeful gaze, it’s clear he wants to hear me say it.
“I love you too, Kamisato Ayato.”
My words are soon followed by his soft lips pressed against mine, and as my heart leaps out of my chest and into his hands, I kiss him back with every ounce of my being.
 ✧・゚: *✧・゚:*   ♡ *:・゚✧*:・゚✧
“Oh, would you look at that! There’s only one bed in this room!” Thoma declares with an embarrassingly fake shocked expression. “Oh my goodness Thoma, you’re right!~” Ayaka quickly follows up. “Goodnight milord! Goodnight Y/n and lady Ayaka!” Thoma quickly says as he dismisses himself to one of the two available single rooms. Ayaka follows his lead and quickly claims the other single room. “Those two, I swear..” Ayato groans into his hand, pinching his nose.
I can only giggle at my friends' antics.
We rented out a place to stay before we return to Inazuma, so I really shouldn’t be surprised that Thoma and Ayaka planned this as a part of their matchmaking scheme.
We reunited with Albedo, Klee, Thoma, and Ayaka soon after the fireworks finished. Despite the obvious hand holding Ayato and I were doing, Thoma and Ayaka only grinned at each other as they continued on with their evidently meticuled matchmaking strategy.
“Oh well, let them have their fun. Shall we, Y/n?” Ayato asks, and I bashfully agree as I follow him inside the room.
 ✧・゚: *✧・゚:*   ♡ *:・゚✧*:・゚✧
I wholeheartedly expected things to be a bit awkward between Ayato and I, since we did just finally become a couple only an hour beforehand, but to my delight Ayato was very.. Impish about our current predicament.
“Y/n? Why are you shying away? Come here, this bed has more than enough room for the both of us. Don’t you think so?” Ayato chides me as he wraps an arm around my waist. I squeal in surprise when my back is suddenly pressed against his chest.
I’m starting to think that suddenly sharing a bed isn’t affecting Ayato in the slightest degree. I slightly maneuver my body so I can glance at Ayato’s face propped near my shoulder, and the sight proves my previous thoughts to be wrong.
Ayato’s eyes are currently squeezed shut as a wobbly smile is accompanied by the beautiful pink hue adorning his cheeks. Ayato opens his eyes after a few moments, and he startles when he notices my equally flushed yet elated gaze staring back at him. “Y-Y/n! There’s nothing to see here. Could you turn around please? I-I need a moment to collect myself.” Ayato mumbles in embarrassment. I giggle at his charming demeanor, but nonetheless oblige.
After all, I know how that feels.
I feel more than hear Ayato take a few deep breaths behind me as he tries to collect himself. “...It may be wrong of me to say this, but I’m actually very happy you feel as much… nervous excitement as I do. For a moment I thought I may be the only one who was affected by the situation.” I softly relay my feelings to Ayato.
Ayato huffs in annoyance behind me, and I jump a bit in shock. Did what I say offend him? Before I can open my mouth to ask, I’m suddenly turned around to face Ayato.
“Here, feel just how fast my heart is beating. …It unfortunately hasn’t slowed down one bit.” Ayato bashfully tells me as he grumbles out the last statement. I admire the adorable look on his face as he takes one of my hands in his, and he places it against his chest where his heart is beating underneath.
“Ayato…” I murmur in astonishment. His heart is beating rapidly underneath my hand, and Ayato avoids my gaze. “Y-Yes well now you know you aren’t the only one who feels this way.” Ayato takes a moment to lock gazes with me again, but when he does the breath is knocked out of me.
I can see the uncontained adoration he holds for me in them, and the small smile he’s sporting only makes me swoon even more. I use my free hand to place his unoccupied hand against my chest, and he smiles when he feels just how hard my heart is beating.
“Well… It brings me great joy to know that I make you feel this way.” Ayato says more to himself than me, with an evident smug undertone. “Oh, you!” I laugh at him as I smack his chest playfully. Ayato pretends to be upset with my behavior and tuts at me, but all he does is bring me closer to his chest.
“Have a goodnight’s rest Y/n. I’m sure there'll be more to discover tomorrow before we return to Inazuma.” Ayato whispers in my ear. “Yes, I’m sure there will be… goodnight Ayato.” I reply sleepily. Before I fully drift off to sleep, I feel Ayato press a tender kiss against my hair, and I fall into a peaceful sleep with a soft smile on my face.
 ✧・゚: *✧・゚:*   ♡ *:・゚✧*:・゚✧
The next day we explore other parts of Mondstadt before we return to Inazuma. We receive a heartfelt sendoff from Klee, Albedo, and the traveler, whom we ended up bumping into later on in the day.
“Well, that was a fun experience! I hope you two enjoyed it as much as we did.” Thoma comments on the Windblume festival as we head back to Inazuma. “Of course we did! It was fun picking dandelions with you two today. I really missed Mondstadt, but Inazuma is my home now.” I say with a certain gentleness to my voice. Thoma agrees with me wholeheartedly, and we continue to discuss things we rediscovered while we were in Mondstadt.
“So, brother, did you and Y/n…?” I hear Ayaka prompt Ayato. Thoma suddenly stops talking to hear Ayato’s response to Ayaka’s question. Ayato takes in their enthusiastic expression as he chuckles to himself. “You two and your matchmaking schemes. If you must know, yes. Y/n and I are dating now.” Ayato says in merriment. “Yay! The plan worked!” Ayaka cheers with Thoma as they high five each other.
Ayato and I give each other a knowing look before we burst into laughter, and the rest of the journey back to Inazuma is spent with Thoma and Ayaka pestering us for the details.
This was a wonderful Windblume festival. I can’t wait to experience more joys of the Windblume festival when we return next year.
 ✧・゚: *✧・゚:*   ♡ *:・゚✧*:・゚✧
“Are you sure?” Ayato asks me for confirmation. I give my overly eager approval, and Ayato chuckles at my enthusiasm. “Alright then…” Ayato raises a delicate hand to cup my cheek as he slowly leans in. I sigh in content as I close my eyes and wait for his lips to meet mine.
That is until…
“Thoma, move! I can’t see!” “Oh, sorry milady. Aww, look how cute they are together!” Ayato and I stop moving towards each other and spare a knowing glance towards the door, only to see that it’s slightly cracked open. “Uh-oh, they heard us! Run Thoma!” Ayaka giggles. We listen as their footsteps quickly fade in the distance as their loud laughter enters through the small crack in the door.
“Oh my…” Is all I say. Ayato and I share a look of amusement as we laugh at their antics. Before long we resume where we left off.
Despite Thoma and Ayaka’s obvious meddling, I appreciate the both of them for how supportive they are of our relationship.
“Alright, how about we chase them down now? Ayaka is my little sister, so of course we need to give her a head start.” Ayato mischievously tells me as he presses a chaste kiss to my cheek. “You bet. Let’s go!” I shout in excitement. Ayato and I spring up from our position, and we eventually catch up to Thoma and Ayaka.
I cherish the way our joyful laughter rings throughout the Kamisato estate, but I particularly cherish the way Ayato’s hand fits so snugly against mine as we chase Thoma and Ayaka around the estate.

⠀「 KAZUHA*ೃ༄ 」
An absolute sweetheart who insists on pushing the cart or carrying the basket for you !!
Sticks pretty close to your grocery list, though if something interesting catches his eye he might pick it up and show it to you in hopes to convince you to get it.
His choices in food are of the healthier variety, I feel like. Mostly goes for organic choices, and is pretty well-learned in knowing which fruits, veggies and fish are the freshest and which are the closest to spoiling.
Tbh grocery shopping with Kazuha is so ?? Chill? Like, little to no stress, swear.
It’s just very easy and relaxing, walking through the aisles at a leisurely pace and plucking stuff off of shelves. You two talk about whatever you want as you walk, or sometimes you sing along to the music that plays from the speakers.
If something is too tall for either of you two to reach there’s no problem!! Kazuha can jump pretty damn high so he can reach the tip-top shelf easy peasy ♡
I feel like Kazuha also has a secret sweet tooth? Nothing too wild, but you’d catch him eyeing a pack of marshmallows every now and then, or staring a little too long at a tub of ice cream.
If you seamlessly pluck up whatever sweet he’s debating on getting and put it into the cart, he’ll literally light up and give you a sweet smooch on ur nose :((

⠀「 XIAO*ೃ༄ 」
To his credit !! He’s pretty damn decent as a grocery buddy.
Xiao’s a little introverted, typically choosing not to be around other people for very long periods of time, so him actually volunteering to come with you nearly moved you to tears.
He also pushes the cart from you and keeps track of your grocery list, crossing stuff out for you without you even having to tell him.
Xiao doesn’t talk much, which isn’t very out of the ordinary, but he does give some helpful suggestions when you’re indecisive about something. And he’s very pragmatic and straightforward when he helps you make your decisions, too, so it’s very time-efficient having him with u ♡
He barely asks for anything that isn’t on the list tbh? I dunno, I guess he just doesn’t feel the need to. Not to mention, he’s not particularly picky when it comes to his meals either, so he’s content to sit back and let you take the reins for restocking the fridge.
If his eyes sparkle a little when he sees you picking up ingredients for almond tofu, you choose not to tease him about it.
Definitely the one to try and bring all the grocery bags to the car in one go. And??? He somehow manages it to ??? You have no idea how, or how the guys somehow managed to hold your hand while also toting all those grocery bags but ?? Hey, you’re not complaining.

⠀「 THOMA*ೃ༄ 」
I shit you not Thoma is the best person to go shopping with. Hands down.
Thoma doesn’t go to the supermarket for his groceries, actually. Or at least not all of them. For some stuff that have to be imported or that are a bit harder to come by locally, he goes to the groceries and such.
However, when it comes too food shopping, his first stop are the farmers markets!
He’s already a regular at the local farmer’s market. Old grannies love to pinch his cheeks whenever they see him and they always coo over you two being an adorable couple.
Thoma leads you by the hand all around the farmer’s market the entire time you’re out, knowing which stall to go to for the freshest produce and the most decent price.
Knows how to bargain with the locals without being disrespectful! And he always manages to net really good discounts. If you ask him how he does it, he’ll wink and tell you that it’s just his charm. And you can’t fully disagree.
Definitely brings around his own eco-bags, too. He’s used to carrying all the groceries on his own, but if you offer to help he’ll thank you with a kiss and a smile.
At one point while you two separate to cover more ground, he passes by a stall ran by an old couple and their grandkid that sells flowers. He gets you a bouquet— nothing too big that’s hard to carry around, but something small and cute that you can press between your books and display.
When you reunite and he gives you the gift, he looks so goddamn precious holding out the flowers to you with his smile that u just wanna give him a kiss ♡

⠀「 AYATO*ೃ༄ 」
If Thoma is a god-send to be with when grocery shopping, Ayato is… nicely put, the exact opposite.
Listen I don’t blame the man. He’s rich enough that he’s never really had to do his own groceries before, so he’s a bit out of his element when he accompanies you to do it one day, but it’s still cute that he cleared a part of his busy schedule to help you out with this. He’s a little confused, but he’s got the spirit (and a pretty face, which helps.)
Motherfucker picks up some incredibly overpriced caviar, looks at the price tag ( $95 !!! For 30 grams what the fuck !!! ) nods to himself like he remembers you having that shit on your grocery list (you do not) and would have plunked it into your cart if you didn’t catch him in time.
He reasons that he’s tried this brand before and that it’s a very delicious-tasting one that you should try yourself, and his reasons are honestly pretty sweet, but it doesn’t change the fact that you don’t need the goddamn caviar. When you try to tell him that you don’t have the budget for it, he offers to get it for you which, again sweet and it makes you want to kiss him, but that’s not the point Ayato !!
Aside from his ignorance inexperience with how much a typical grocery run costs, there’s also the fact that this guy can’t cook for shit. As a result, if he’s not tossing rich person food into your cart, he’s placing shit that should under no circumstances be mixed together in the cart, claiming that he thinks the combination sounds nice to consume.
Ayato, dearest, I love you, but what the fuck is a Cheeto mango shiitake salad ??????
Tumblr media
⠀「 ALHAITHAM*ೃ༄ 」
The mf who makes a detailed shopping list, complete with the specific brand of the item you’re looking for, the exact amount, the exact price for said amount plus quantity, and then several alternate brands if the one he was aiming for sells out. All of these are entirely researched before hand.
Well, he either does that, or he goes for he most outrageous expensive shit you’ve every seen.
And no half of the time he doesn’t even throw in the $60 per kilogram cheese because he likes it— he does it because he kinda enjoys pissing off a certain blond architect who invites himself over to sleep on your couch rather often.
It’s usually up to you to cross your arms and stare Alhaitham down, quietly judging him for a petty bitch while he crosses his own arms and stares back at you, one eyebrow raised in the way that makes you not sure if you want to punch him or kiss him.
Sometimes you win and with a sigh, your boyfriend quietly turns and goes off to acquire the next item on his incredibly detailed list, leaving you to put his purchase back as you victoriously fist pump to yourself.
Other times, he wins and you throw your arms up, rolling your eyes so hard as you try not to look at his smirk for fear of actually punching him (or, you know, kissing him and flagrantly having public displays of affection.)
Fine! You say to him with a huff that’s not actually angry. Keep your goddamn parmigiano reggiano.
You can never feel huffy about it for long, though— not when you find an extra tub of your favorite ice cream later as you put the groceries away.

Tumblr media
❅ ᴋᴀᴇʏᴀ
You’re the first one to ask!
: ̗̀➛ There has been times where you’ve pondered on the thought as to why Kaeya hasn’t ever once hugged you during your relationship together.
: ̗̀➛ Maybe he’s testing and teasing you to see how long it would take for you to ask for one or maybe that he’s taking into consideration if you’d like or dislike it and is cautious about it. But those questions would only last for today as you’d like to test it out once he comes back home from his knightly duties…
‿‿‿‿
(Short fic below plus more under the cut!)
"May I hug you?”
Upon the blue haired cavalry captains arrival he had been dumbfounded by your bold question and could only lean on the frame of the door to his office. "Well, well, I never thought I would be hearing this in all my days with you," you only could roll your eyes at his words as you trudged towards him and enveloped his waist.
He could start to feel his cheeks heat up with the contact of your arms around his waist, feeling tingles from his arms to his cheeks too. Bit by bit he embraces you back and pulls you in just a bit closer to his body. "Hm, I quite like this very much. Perhaps we could stay like this for a little while more wouldn't you agree, my love?"
His warm breath grazing upon your skin and his voice giving you a little shiver from it. Without a word you silently nod your head as you heaved a big sigh, relaxing in the arms of your beloved.

You’re the first one to ask!
‿‿‿‿
: ̗̀➛ Despite his cold and serious nature you can't deny that his fluffy red hair and that large coat with the large ruffles does make him look quite huggable.
: ̗̀➛ You're quite lucky to be called his partner because if it were to be anyone else he would've given them a displeased look and avoid them. So, with that luck on your side you wait behind the doors of Dawn Winery for his shift at the Angel's Share to come to an end...
"May I hug you?”
Asking the renowned red haired tycoon after he came back from a tiring shift — Drained, really — because of serving specificly two patrons of his that won't leave him alone for most time. He’s bewildered at the sudden request when he had first stepped foot into the winery, his coat did reek of the smell of wine but thankfully it partly does smell of berries like his beloved grapes.
"Oh, well if you wish to then your request shall be fulfilled." He opens his arms for you to come into them and as you did he embraces you right up to his chest. You start to think that he's enjoying the hug very much to the point that Adelinde and Elzer caught the act and are now standing from afar and smiling at the small yet adorable act.
❅ ᴢʜᴏɴɢʟɪ

You’re the first one to ask!
: ̗̀➛ You've wondered what it would feel like to wrap your arms around his waist, the thought of it alone has you heating up and malfunctioning more than you had expected it to.
: ̗̀➛ The one and only funeral director, Hu Tao, has even encouraged you to ask him for a hug wanting to see how the usual calm man would possibly break. And so the two of you are now waiting for him to come back from an errand as Hu Tao had hid somewhere else...
────────── 〔✿〕──────────
‿‿‿‿
"May I hug you?"
Getting more nervous and how you're now starting to regret ever accepting this. The ex-geo archon stood in front of you with a bewildered look on his face but relaxed it now bubbling from his mouth was a chuckle.
"And pray tell, what made you act like this all of a sudden? If it is what you really want then come here my love." Enveloping you into a warm embrace. You do the same as you feel his chest rise up and down with each breath he took, it almost felt ethereal to wear if you closed your eyes even for a bit you could be off into the best slumber you could have in your life.
And Hu Tao, well she had a kamera with her and decided to take a picture of the small moment and would decide if she should show it to the both of you but for now she had quietly exited the room to give you two love birds some time to yourselves.
❅ ʙᴀɪᴢʜᴜ
You’re the first one to ask!
: ̗̀➛ You’re very much well aware of his weak physicality and that he most likely can’t do much affectionate actions like carrying you, allowing you to sit on his lap or basically anything that can involve in carrying you to an extent. Although that won’t stop him from giving you kisses and gentle hugs though the only problem here is that he’s working all the time and you’re positive that he wouldn’t appreciate it if you randomly went up to him and hug him while he’s assisting with the clients.
: ̗̀➛ Waiting for the right moment to pop the question you make sure that there was no other clients around and Herbalist Gui and Qiqi is out of sight. With these things in mind you gather all of your confidence and walk up to the well known pharmacist in Liyue and asked him the question…
‿‿‿‿
“May I hug you?”
You were standing awkwardly at your place, your eyes darting everywhere around you but a certain doctor. The said doctor had turned his attention away from the medicine bottles to you and smiled. “My, my. Well that was very out of the blue, dear. Why of course you may, go easy on your grip though,” He chuckled to himeself as he sets aside Changsheng to the table.
Opening his arms for you, you take slow strides towards him and wrap your arms around his bare waist making sure that your grip wasn’t to deathly for him to handle. Baizhu followed your lead and wrapped his arms just below your shoulders and started to gently pat your back which made you jump at first but eased into it. “Hmm, this feel quite nice. We’ll have to do this more often when people aren’t around.”
────────── 〔✿〕──────────
❅ ᴋᴀᴍɪꜱᴀᴛᴏ ᴀʏᴀᴛᴏ
He is the first one to ask!
‿‿‿‿
: ̗̀➛ Kamisato Ayato, the leader of the Yashiro Commission. He’s working ever so hard and rarely has time to attend in any outdoor activities or to accompany his sister on said activities and in his stead he asks for Thoma to step in.
: ̗̀➛ On this day though you're sat right beside of him reading a book as he too is doing some reading but on festival's for Narukami Island that will be held in later time. He can feel his eyelids get heavier every passing minute and he accidentally lets out an amusing question...
"May I hug you?"
He turns his head to the side to meet your eyes as you give him a wide eyed look, he swears that it almost resembled one of an owl or a deer getting caught in headlights, trying to find the words to reply back to him.
He chuckles, hiding his mouth with his gloved hands. "Thoma isn't here currently to aid me with some boba but perhaps this could be an alternative way to fill up my energy hm?" You giggled, placing the bookmark into the unread page of the book and set it off on to the side as Ayato pats on his thighs, signing you to take a seat on his lap as he snakes his arms around your body.
The Yashiro Commissioner had laid his head upon your shoulder and closed his eyes. "Hmm, this already feels better. Mind if we stay like this for a while?" The rumbling of his chest sending vibrations to your back makes your heart start to do gymnastics.
"Of course, I wouldn't mind one bit." You say as the two of you sit in peace with nothing but faint sounds of the outside.
❅ ᴅᴀɪɴꜱʟᴇɪꜰ
────────── 〔✿〕──────────
He is the first one to ask!
: ̗̀➛ Dainsleif has had little to no contact within his life excluding the few fists bumps or handshakes he’s had with Halfdan back when Khaenri'ah was still built and thriving before the great fall and calamity of his home. Since then he’s met you; a very persistent individual. You had started to travel along side him ever since you saw him winding down at the Angles Share.
: ̗̀➛ Along your journey with each other, you’ve learned a lot about his personality. He’s reserved, speaks only when spoken to or really needs to, was an independent individual and certainly wasn’t one to ask this astounding question…
‿‿‿‿
“May I hug you?”
He had asked you while the both of you were currently sitting on the patches of grass, camping out in the bushes as the branches of leaves above the two once provided shade from the scorching rays. To say the least, you were stunned at his sudden request and had to do a double take to make sure it is what he reallly said was true and why.
With your tardy reply Dainsleif had assumed that your reply was a silent ’no’ and had turned his head around to avoid the awkward tension between you two. As far as he knew this is where his expectations of this small “event” would end at but perhaps he had second guessed it when he felt a finger poke at his bicep. Slowly, he shifted his gaze to you only to soon feel a pair or arms wrap around his waist.
He makes no noise knowing what the gesture was, instead of you being to his side he gets you to sit in front of him, wrapping his muscular arms around your mid section. Burying his face into your neck as he allows himself to be off guard and take in this moment.
“Thank you.” was heard, his warm breath tickling at the crook of your neck. You hum softly in response, not wanting to ruin this short time of a man who has to carrry the fate of Khaenri'ah on his shoulders.

Rejecting you was my first mistake
→ Masterlist
Tumblr media
Summary: They harshly reject you before realizing later on that they had feelings for you all along... only that you have already turned over a new leaf.
Pairings: Ayato, Kaeya, Xiao, Alhaitham x (gn!) Reader - [separate]
Tags: Angst, Hurt/no comfort
A/N: Hi peeps! I'm back with a new fic. Perfect for the gloomy fall season I deliver you some angst that a nonnie requested. I also added Alhaitham despite not being in the request. This is my first time writing for him (and it's angst, haha! He'll also get some fluff soon, I promise!)
Tumblr media
AYATO
You looked below yourself and started drawing circles in the sand on the beach you were sitting on with Ayato. Your heart painfully clenched in your chest as you were unsure whether or not now was the right time to pour your heart out to the man by your side. Would he feel the same or would it end up ruining the friendship you’ve had since your childhood days?
“What is troubling you?” There really was nothing you could hide from him, was there?
“Nothing.”, you attempted to reassure him but he didn't seem convinced and raised an eyebrow with worry flaring up in his lavender eyes. You sighed deeply, your mind and heart starting to race one hundred miles per hour, while trying to gather all your courage.
“Ayato, I… I think I have feelings for you.”
“Oh.”
A small frown played around his lips that looked more like he was pitying you and you could feel how your heart shattered into a million pieces. A mind numbing silence followed your confession that almost drove you insane.
“Oh? That is all you have to say?”
“I’m sorry... I won’t be able to give you the reply you’re hoping for... I do not reciprocate your feelings, I see you more as a part of my family. I've actually been meaning to tell you today, that I’m going to be wed soon”
“... a wedding?”, you asked in disbelief with a quivering voice.
“It has not been officially announced yet, but she is from an allied clan and it was my father’s dying wish that I’d marry her.”
You turned your face away from him, not wanting him to see how his words had crushed even the last bit of hope you've ever had. You could feel tears stinging at the corners of your eyes and a painful lump forming in your throat. You got up from where you were sitting, kicking off the sand that stuck to your clothes and sighed silently in defeat.
“Do you love her?”, you asked with a shaky voice, waiting for his answer.
“I will.”, he replied after a short moment of hesitation, as if he was looking for the right words in order to not wound you more than he already had, oblivious to the fact that your heart was already broken beyond repair.
You nodded in acceptance before you started to walk away without looking back, feeling his pitying stare burn into the back of your head.
Weeks turned into months and months soon turned into years but he never saw you again since that day on the beach. You didn’t attend his wedding, that he had attempted to invite you to again via numerous letters, either. But every letter he sent to you or spontaneous visits to your home, stayed unanswered, until he ultimately decided to leave you alone to allow your broken heart to heal at its own pace.
It wasn’t until he found a letter addressed to him on his desk one day, that made reality suddenly crash down on him.
Dear Lord Kamisato,
I am truly sorry that I did neither reach out for a long time nor that I could deliver this message to you in person. Shortly after our talk at the beach back then I realized that I needed to change something about my life and decided to leave Inazuma for good. By the time you will receive this letter I am already long gone.
I had realized that I needed to stop chasing impossible dreams and start focusing on my own goals in life and I knew that wouldn’t have been possible, if my feelings for you kept being an obstacle. It felt like I was drowning in a deep ocean, trying to reach the surface in order to be able to breathe again, but no matter how hard I struggled, it felt like it kept moving further and further away from me. Thus I took the next ship to Liyue and started to build a new life there. You’ll be happy to hear that I even met a lovely man that I married not too long ago.
I’m sorry I could not attend your wedding and I often miss the days where we hung out to talk or played chess together. I hope that things have gone well on your end and that you’re happy and doing well where you’re at now.
With Love,
Your old friend
He gingerly put the letter back on the table in front of him, tracing your penmanship with his finger as if he intended to feel your presence through it under his fingertips for one last time. He harshly bit his lip and felt a single tear rolling down his cheek. He wondered why your words caused him such intense grief all of a sudden.
It wasn’t until his eyes landed on the photo of him and his wife on his wedding day that he began to realize and a tidal wave of regret surged over him.
Back on that day on the beach he told you he would get married, he told you he would love her and he told you he doesn’t love you the same way you loved him. So why was it that only now he realized that it was you, that it had always been you, who he had been in love with all along? He had been a coward and pushed you away. Now you are gone, building a family of your own, far away from him, while he is trapped in a loveless marriage with a woman he has nothing in common with.
He had lied to himself all these years, convincing himself that he was happy with the way things were now - but the cold hard truth was, that he could not be happy if it wasn’t with you.
Tumblr media
KAEYA
“And I won, again!”, Kaeya snickered, throwing his playing cards on the table triumphantly before downing the rest of his wine in one sip. It had been a cheerful evening that you and him spent together at the Tavern after work and you’d feel great, if only it wasn’t for your crush on the Cavalry Captain, which increasingly pushed itself in the foreground on your mind.
“I give up, you beat me! Drinks are on me tonight”, you chuckled and lifted your hands up in defeat before going to order another round of drinks for you.
Kaeya watched as you walked over to the bar, conversing with the familiar bard who seemed to be quite fond of the wine as well and often kept hanging around the Tavern. He watched as the young bard threw a quick glance over his way before leaning in closer to you and whispering something in your ear that seemed to fluster you quite a bit, making you shake your head quickly.
“Got a love confession from the little bard over there, sweetheart?”, Kaeya teased as you arrived back at the table with the drinks.
“No, no, nothing like that. Nothing important.”, you reassured him, but deep down you hoped that what Kaeya had just asked was a small sign that he was interested in you as well.
As the evening drew to a close, Kaeya and you walked home together until you stood in front of your door. The moment you took the doorknob in your hand you suddenly turned around again with newfound courage, determined to spill your hearts content out to Kaeya.
“Alright, here we are. See you tomorrow! We can–”
“Kaeya, wait…”, you interrupted him and grabbed his hand before he could leave. “Remember when the bard told me something earlier?”
“Yeah, I do. Need any love advice from yours truly?”, Kaeya teased.
“Kaeya, please. This is not about him… but about something he told me, or rather about something he told me to do.”
“Are you in trouble?”
“Tch, that’s one way to put it… Kaeya, listen, I think – no, I’ve realized you’re more to me than just a friend. I–I I have feelings for you.”
A long silence followed your confession. His expression remained unreadable until he eventually pulled his hand out of yours again, placing it over his stomach and starting to laugh. Your heart painfully clenched at the sound of his bellowing laughter echoing in your ears.
“Hahaha, sweetheart. I think you had a bit too much to drink tonight, hm?” He remarked and patted your cheek with an amused expression, wiping a tear out of the corner of his eye.
“I only drank grape juice, Kaeya!”, you exclaimed, slapping his hand away in frustration. “I meant what I said.”
“Oh.”, he paused, his amused expression replaced with one that essentially told you everything you needed to know. He did not feel the same way about you.
“You actually like me?”
“I do… quite ironic, huh? The first time I ever fall in love, it’s with the only person who doesn’t love me back.”, you directed your gaze at the ground, feeling tears prick at the corners of your eyes as you desperately tried to swallow them down.
“I-I guess I’ll leave you be… goodnight. See you tomorrow, maybe…” He turned around, quickly waving you goodbye and leaving you heartbroken.
In the following weeks he noticed that you were purposefully avoiding him but he couldn’t blame you for it. He tried to act as he normally would when he ran into you, in the hopes that things would go back to how they were before that night, but they never did. In fact the more he tried to act normal, the more he felt like you were pushing him away, until you ultimately came to his office, handing him your letter of resignation telling him that you couldn’t keep going as if nothing happened.
It wasn’t until he saw you walking around the Dawn Winery’s vineyard hand in hand with Diluc, when he was there for some official business on the Knights' behalf, that he felt something inside of him die. At first he shrugged it off as jealousy, until he wondered why he was jealous in the first place. He had told you he had no feelings for you, so why did he feel the way he did when he saw you so happy and in love with Diluc? Why was it only now that he realized that he was in love with you?
To shield himself, he had always been so used to lying and keeping his heart locked, even to the ones he loved, that he had become numb to its desires - running away from his own feelings, until it was too late.
In the end all he could do was ruin things and push people away. It’s what he was best at, it seems.

XIAO
Xiao and you had hung out at Wangshu Inn but as soon as you had gone home he found your backpack sitting on one of the chairs on the balcony. Surely you must’ve forgotten it.
He picked your backpack up before it slipped out of his grasp, spilling its contents on the floor. Among it was your diary, which flipped open and landed face down on the ground.
Xiao let out an annoyed sigh as he picked up the things scattered across the floor, until he picked up your diary and caught a glimpse of a page where you had stuck a picture of you and him together with some doodled hearts and a small note reading "One day I will tell him..." below it.
What did that have to mean?
As if prompted, out of the corner of his eyes he spotted how your familiar figure appeared at the entrance to the balcony again. You halted the minute you saw him stand there, backpack on the floor with all your things scattered around it and your diary in his hand - opened. You could feel panic well up inside of your chest and your heart dropped heavily.
“What are you doing there, Xiao?”, you asked with unease in your voice. Had he seen the picture with your notes?
“I wanted to bring you your backpack, you’ve forgotten it. I accidentally dropped it… what does this have to mean? What will you tell me one day?”
He turned around, stretching his arm out, showing you the opened book in his hand and your worst fears had become reality the moment you saw which page he had been looking at.
“Xiao, I–, archons why did you have to see this… I like you Xiao – a lot actually.”
He eyed you cautiously with an indecipherable expression in his eyes. Was it confusion, was it anger or maybe even lack of understanding? You couldn’t tell and the silence that followed your confession made your heart painfully contract in your chest.
“Why?”
“What do you mean, why?”
“Why would you want to tell me this? What made you think I’d ever feel the same way? I’m not capable of feeling this way towards you, or anyone.”
“It’s not like I chose to.” Your voice was nothing but a mere whisper at this point and the lump in your throat became more painful by the minute. You took your last bit of strength to rip your diary out of his hands and quickly gathered your things together, that were still lying on the ground and stuffed them into your backpack. You flung it over your shoulder and left the adeptus without looking back once.
This was the last time Xiao talked to you. He convinced himself that he didn’t need anyone around anyway, he’d been alone for centuries already, he could do a couple more. That was until the Lantern Rite came around a year later.
He never had been the person to hang around big crowds and this year would be no different. He sat atop one of the buildings in the city, overlooking the harbor and watching the lanterns float into the night sky.
Suddenly his gaze found you in the large crowd at the pier and he watched you as you let your own lantern rise into the sky, but you weren’t alone. There was a man with you who kissed you tenderly as you stood there hand in hand, looking after your lantern with a big smile on your face.
Something inside of him stirred at the sight of you looking at another man with the same adoration you’ve had in your eyes for him back then. How often had you asked him if he had wanted to visit the Lantern Rite together with you as well and how often did you skip going because he refused to go?
The scene where you had left him on the balcony of Wangshu Inn, when he had found your diary, played in front of his inner eye again, evident hurt in your eyes, inflicted by his vicious words, when all you had ever shown and given to him was your time and love. He had yet again been too stubborn to realize what his heart wanted and fell back into old patterns of pushing anyone away who got too close to him. Maybe he had been scared of what it would mean if he had admitted he had felt the same for you – in fact, he still felt the same. But you no longer did.
He had pushed you away and you found happiness with someone else. Someone more deserving of your love and he had no one to blame but himself for that.

ALHAITHAM
The day you found out you and Alhaitham had been assigned to the same research trip for the Akademiya, you had felt your heart do a little jump for joy in your chest. Both of you had started studying together at the Haravatat and occasionally had been working on group projects.
The trip itself started well, you had been sent to research and gather information on some carvings found in one of the ruins of King Deshret in the desert. You had set up camp at the oasis nearby and working with him was going smoothly so far, as it always did.
On the second day you decided to venture deeper into the ruins together, to see if you'd find more inscriptions. As you took the lead, you suddenly felt one of the tiles below your feet sink down and before you could react you felt a strong arm snatch around your waist, pulling you to the side. Once you came to again you found yourself lying atop of Alhaitham, your back pressed against his chest and his arm still around your waist, in front of you a pile of rubble that had fallen down from the ceiling.
"Careful, there are traps here.", he rationally explained. Maybe a bit too rational considering you could have died. But you didn't give it too much thought, also because you were way too distracted by the pounding of your heart in your chest, and you knew it wasn't because of the triggered trap that it was beating so loudly.
"Right…", you huffed breathlessly, before slowly trying to wiggle out of his grasp again. Had the placement of his arm been intentional or did you interpret too much into it? As your thoughts spiraled off, you felt your cheeks heat up, looking down to the ground in an attempt to hide your flustered face from him.
"Are you hurt?"
"No. No, I'm fine. Thank you… for pulling me out of the way."
He looked at you with a stern expression, nodding in acknowledgement before brushing some sand off his clothes and returning to his studies wordlessly. He sat down on a huge stone in front of a mural, continuing to scribble notes in his notebook.
"Alhaitham?", you rasped with evident nervousness in your voice, gathering all your courage for what you were planning to say.
“Hm?”, he hummed, just briefly flicking his gaze up to you. You deeply inhaled beginning to feel your heartbeat pulsate in your temples.
"I think you're really great and–"
"Do you intend to ask me for help with your paper?"
"N-no, no that's not what I was going to say… uhm, I've been meaning to say that I really really like you.", you stammered, gesturing about wildly with your hands.
"I like you too, you're a great research partner and have great academic potential."
Ouch. Either he was completely oblivious or playing dumb, no matter the case, the lump in your throat became so big it started to hurt and at that moment you wanted nothing more than to cry and run away. Your confession had backfired even worse than anything you had imagined.
"I-I don't mean academically… or even as a friend. I like you… romantically, Alhaitham.", you coaxed out, using up all your strength in order to not start crying.
He looked up from his notes and put his pencil down, eyes now fully trained on you while furrowing his eyebrows.
"What made you think I have feelings for you?", he asked with an annoyed undertone in his voice. He slightly shook his head and devoted himself to his notes again.
He did not speak to you for the entire rest of trip afterwards, outside of the strictly necessary communication. Practically acting as if you didn't exist. Leaving you even more embarassed and heartbroken than you had already been from his original rejection.
Back at the Akademiya you immediately enrolled to change subjects and joined the Amurta for a short while, before deciding to quit your academic career entirely to become a Forest Ranger in Avidya Forest.
Alhaitham would lie if he had said he immediately noticed that you had quit, it had only occurred to him several weeks after you had been gone. It had gotten rather quiet recently and while he usually didn't mind being on his own and studying alone, he did miss your input on certain matters.
It wasn't until one day where he was tasked to bring an important document to Tighnari in Avidya Forest on the Akademiya's behalf, that he realized his grave mistake. It was then he saw you again for the first time. You stood on the gravel path in front of Tighnari's hut, both your hands interlocked with his, pressing a fleeting kiss on his lips. A smile brighter than the sun gracing your beautiful features before waving Tighnari goodbye and heading for the forest, together with a girl with green hair and purple eyes.
At that moment Alhaitham felt a wave of emotions wash over him, ones he, at first, couldn't quite place. You had never smiled at him like this. Was what he witnessed, what he could have had with you? He tried to ignore the painful knot in his stomach but no matter how often he told himself that he didn’t care what you were doing with your life now and who you were with, he had to admit that in reality he wanted nothing more than to turn back time to tell you he felt the same for you. It finally dawned on him that he had been blind about his feelings for you the entire time.
Why did he only realize it now? Only Archons knew.
He had learned the hard way that academic success wasn’t everything that was desirable in life. A realization that unfortunately came too late - you had already found happiness in someone else.
