Leave the World Behind (dir. Sam Esmail).
Netflix's film adaptation of Rumaan Alam's 2020 apocalyptic novel initially builds a more than serviceable paranoid psychological thriller in the vein of a classical stage play with few characters and a building mystery. Starring Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali, Ethan Hawke, and Myha'la Herrold as two families stranded together in a swanky remote vacation home just off Long Island, Esmail's tight direction enhances the dynamic performances. However, what ultimately comes of the film's tense end-of-the-world mystery never amounts to enough to entirely pay off the suspenseful rising action and impressive dramatic work.

Leave the World Behind (2023) Review
Tumblr media
Guess that's one way to make me dislike Friends more.
Plot: A family vacation on Long Island is interrupted by two strangers bearing news of a blackout. As the threat grows, both families must decide how best to survive the potential crisis, all while grappling with their own place in this collapsing world.
So much wasted potential. A long drawn-out slow shuffle to Nowheresville. A movie that offers so many ideas, plot points, and thread lines that are never answered or go anywhere:
Why is there the random static noise throughout the film and where is it coming from?
The deers and flamingos congregating at the property are simply explained as "the animals know something we don't" and then there's no further explanation or follow-up about that.
Is Mahershala Ali's character's wife dead? Probably, but who cares?? Instead, let's have him and Julia Roberts have an awkward drunk dance scene where the two come close to cheating on their respective spouses because that makes sense! Oh, and Ethan Hawke's character may be a nonce!
Why are the son's teeth suddenly falling out? There's a reference to an insect biting him, so does that mean there's a mysterious plague spreading? Possibly, but we don't deserve to know apparently.
A random shot of the US flag on the moon overlooking Earth as it covers the sun to cause an eclipse is a lovely visual trick, but what's the point of it? Are they suggesting an alien invasion??
Why are Teslas without drivers crashing into one another? Actually no - that doesn't surprise me. Just so you know, that checks out.
I could go on. I'm all for a movie being mysterious and not giving us all the answers. Just look at any David Lynch project - the man's an enigma! But even with Twin Peaks and such Lynch at least provides enough depth and reason to the worlds he creates that all the weird stuff fits in well. In Leave the World Behind things are truly happening under the motto "just because" and "why the hell not" and it makes the viewing experience immensely frustrating. Especially when the movie is nearly 2 and a half hours long and the anticlimactic abrupt ending is a slap to your face for wasting your time.
The performances are alright. You have a trio of 1980s icon stars - Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke, and Kevin Bacon - and naturally, they play their parts as you'd expect them to even if Bacon is heavily under-used and Roberts' line delivery in certain dramatic moments was over-the-top and borderline hysterical. Mahershala Ali lives and breathes Academy Award-worthy performances. He delivers every note of his dialogue with such a methodic approach that the guy could appear in any true stinker and still stand tall and proud. So of course he's great and probably carries most of the heavyweight acting here. Myha'la Herrold is given one characteristic of being constantly pissed off, so that works out as she does a solid resting b**ch face.
Visually director Sam Esmail does some funky camera work, with a particularly well-executed sequence when Roberts first walks into their holiday house, and as she's exploring and going up the staircase the camera twists and pans over her very smoothly. Another moment involves a drone chasing Hawke's character as he's driving away while it spills red leaflets everywhere, reminiscent of the alien from Jordan Peele's Nope. Again, the production design and aesthetic of the film are done well, even if it is at times amateur. Netlfix evidently did not chicken run from the budget. However, narratively the movie tries to portray so many different messages that it ends up failing to explore even one. Neither fitting in as a black comedy nor a clever social thriller, this truly may be the most irritating film of the year. Leave this movie behind.
Overall score: 3/10

Today I needed a me day. As part of that me day, I needed an emotional release. So for the first time ever I watched Steel Magnolias. I knew it would make me cry but my goodness. I think there was maybe 15 minutes in the entire almost 2 hour movie where I wasn’t crying! No one warned me that I would not just have an emotional release but an emotional break down! I had to call my mom after. Beautiful movie!

Hi Girlies, this is my first ever movie review. Hope you all enjoy it.
Now I will be blunt and say that this film is not the best superhero film made, in fact I think it is towards the bottom of the list. Some of the directing and editing is poor, and at times the acting is not great.
And the plot is mediocre.
However there are a few good points, the female cast ( especially the three Spider Women ) are beautiful.
Tumblr media
I deny us girlies to watch this film and not wish they were one of them. I was torn between Sydney Sweeney ( Julia Carpenter )
Tumblr media
and Isabela Merced ( Anya Corazon ).
Tumblr media
Though I would happily be Celeste O'Connor ( Mattie Franklin ) or Dakota Johnson ( Madame Web ).
All of them have such lovely outfits, and all look amazing.
The highlight for the movie takes place in a diner where the three Spider Women start chatting to a group of jocks. Celeste starts dancing on the table to Britney's Toxic putting a show on for the men, and pulls shy Sydney up to dance. Sydney starts off reluctantly but soon gets into it, dancing happily for the men.
Now how many of us girlies have fantasized about situations like that? Being encouraged to dance for men, and finding out we love it? I know I have hehe.
Does this scene make the film worth watching? I would say yes, but I think I would suggest waiting for it to come onto streaming services.
So the final score I would give Madame Web is 🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷 out of 10.

Father Copeland you are so special to me <3
Tumblr media
Summary: After watching reader fight for her life in a street fight against Julia Hart, Adam wrestles with his shameful feelings for her.
Tumblr media
Your heart pounds in your ears as you and Julia trade blows in the ring. Each hit collides with your body like a semi plowing through a car at full-speed. But you push on. Warm streams of blood ooze down your face from the cut above your eye and impairs your vision. But you were past seeing red before Julia managed to cut you open.
'Win!' You scream in your mind. 'You have to push through it! You have to win!' Your thoughts scream in your head as you swing your elbow towards Julia's face.
Your elbow collides with Julia's nose and the cartilage crunches inward from the force. Julia lets out a houl that would send a shiver down any normal person's spine. But it only motivates you further. Like a shark smelling blood in the water. You reign down another punch to Julia's face, hitting her square in her nose that it surely broken by now. You can barely see from the blood starting to crustify over your entire face, but you don't care. You've got little miss, 'princess of darkness' dead to rights now.
One more good hit to Julia's face and Aubrey is yanking you off of her. You can barely hear the bell ring over the roar of the crowd. You fall to your knee's, chest heaving as you struggle to catch your breath. It's over. You did it. You beat Julia Hart for the TBS championship.
"And new, TBS Champion! YN LN!" Justin Roberts anounces your name and it's like music to your ears.
You work up the strenngth to rise to your feet and begin clawing at your face in order to remove some of the dried blood from it. You pick up the faint sound of footsteps approaching you as your vision begins to clear and you find your mentor waiting to present you with your hard-earned championship.
Adam Copeland.
"Congradulations, kid. That was one hell of a fight." Adam steps toward you with a proud smile. He hands the TBS championship over to you and raises your free hand high into the air. "Now come on. Let's get you cleaned up backstage. You should see yourself. Look's like something straight out of a horror movie." He chuckles lightheartedly.
"I feel like I just survived one." You match his laugh, despite the burn in your lungs.
Adam parts the ring ropes for you and helps you down off the apron. The two of you head up the ramp as the crowd all chants your name. You hold your head high as you head backstage. Adam directs you back to the locker room, and as soon as you're through the dour your knees begin to buckle.
"Shit!" Adam spots you falter as he's shutting the door behind him. He lurches forward and just manages to catch you before your legs give out. "YN! Are you alright?" Adam questions you as he helps hold you up.
"Yeah yeah." You nod, even though every possible inch of your body burns right now. "I just need to sit down." You assure him.
Adam nods and helps you over to a seat. You fall down into a chair with an exhausted sigh, clutching your new belt to your chest.
Adam towers over you with a worried look on his face. It's been four brutal months of watching you and Julia try and kill one another both in and out of the ring. And truth be told, Adam has hated every second of it. Copeland took you under his wing the same week he signed to AEW after watching you punch Christian square in the nose for trying to hit on you. He's been helping train you up since you're barely 22 and new to the wrestling business. Or at least that's what he tells himself anyway.
"I'm gonna go grab something to wash your face with." Adam clears his throat after a minute. "You rest. I'll be right back."
You nod, too exhausted to have any sort of protest or comment to make. You set your new belt down on your lap and admire the way it shines under the florecent locker room lights. You did it. It's your championship. You're a champion.
"Okay, I hope it's not too hot." Adam comes back with a damp cloth a few minutes later and leans down next to you.
"I can clean my own face, Adam" You protest when Copeland moves to do the job for you.
Adam shakes his head, not taking no for an answer. "You just went nearly an hour in a brutal street fight against a psychotic cult lady." He reminds you. "Let me do this for you. You deserve to rest up after all that."
"Fine." You huff.
With your protests silenced, Adam begins washing away the frankly alarming ammount of blood caked all over your face and neck. He tenatively washes away all the crusted muck that he can before he steps away from you. '
"There we go." Adam smiles to himself. "There's that sweet face again." He muses to himself. "How rested up are you feeling? Because now that it's not covered in an inch of dried sweat and blood. Well, you definetly need to go get that cut looked at before the night is over."
"Is it that bad?" You reply and reach a hand up to touch the wound.
Your fingers brush up against the cut and a stinging sensation flares up. You wince and nod to yourself, having answered your own question.
"Here, I'll walk you down there." Adam offers you a supportive arm to lean on.
"Thanks, Adam." You smile at him but stand up on your own. "But I'm a big girl, dad." You tease him playfully. "I can make it there by myself." You assure Copeland.
Adam nods, a twinge of guilt in his eyes.
'dad'
That term hits Copeland right in the chest as he watches you rise to your feet on your own. He's your mentor. Teacher. Nothing more. Copeland should be feeling proud of you right now. And he is, or rather, does. But pride isn't the only thing that he's feeling right now. Shame is another feeling welling up inside of him. Shame, because of the horrible thoughts that crossed his mind not half an hour ago while watching you dismantle Julia like some sort of feral gremlin. His feral gremlin. His woman. That's what you should be.
His. His and only his.
By the time Adam is done battling with his inner demons that are screaming at him to claim you as his, you are already gone from the locker room.
"Fucking hell." Adam mumbles to himself and plops down into a chair. "What the hell is the matter with me? She's young enough to be my daughter for christ sake!" He rubs a hand over his face.
"Who's young enough to be your daughter?" You come through the door and Copeland freezes up like a deer in headlights.
"YN!" Adam jumps out of his chair in surprise, a mortified look on his face. "That was fast!" He comments, chuckling nervously.
You nod and shut the door behind you. "Yeah. They gave me a couple of staples and then sent me on my way." You point to your head. "Anyway. Who's this young mystery girl you're so bent up about?" You ask him. "Anyone I know?"
"What?" Adam chokes. "I...umm...you..you heard that?" He stutters shamefully.
"Yep." You nod. "Well, some of it anyway." You clarify and set your chin your hand. "So. Who's the very lucky lady that you're pining after, Cope?" You ask him again.
Adam clears his throat and attempts to silently calm himself down. "It's no one." He insists. "Really. Nothing to worry about."
"Is that so?" You quirk a brow at your mentor. "Well then. That's boring." You frown.
Adam shrugs and settles back down into his seat. You seem to be satisfied with his half-assed answer. So Adam has no reason to be freaking out anymore. Right.
After a while of you and Adam chatting, you decide to spring a juicy piece of information in your mentor.
"You know, I ran into Ricky on the way back from the trainers room." You catch Adam's attention. "And he was telling me about a certain TNT champion that he saw making heart eyes at the tv monitors while my match with Julia was on." Your gaze flits to Copeland so you can gauge his reaction. "Well, heart eyes wasn't exactly what he said. But you catch my drift." You add with a sly smile.
"Oh?" Adam replies, and you watch him swallow thickly.
You nod and scoot closer to him with a grin. "So either you've got a serious crush on Julia that he need to discuss. Or, you've been keeping something from me, Adam." You confront him.
"Shit." Adam curses and shakes his head. "I'm sorry, YN." He sighs. "I...I never mean't for anything like this to happen. God, I'm so fucking ashamed of myself."
"Ashamed?" You reply. "Why is that?" You ask Adam. "Adam, what's the big deal that you've got a thing for me? I don't mind." You assure him.
Adam's eyes widen in surprise at your statement. "What? You don't?" He asks you. "How? YN, I'm more than twice your age! I...I could be your dad."
"You could certainly be my daddy, yes." You giggle with a teasing wink. "Adam, come on. You can relax. No one is going to care that you're twice my age, I can promise you that." You assure him.
"I...what the hell?" Adam shakes his head in disbeleif. "You really mean that? So....so, that means you feel the same then?" He asks you.
You nod and rise out of your seat. "I've had a crush on you for a criminally long time, Adam. Well, Christian was technically my first wrestling crush. But he doesn't need to know that." You add with a laugh. "So. Are you going to stop giving yourself a corinary and kiss me or not?" You tease him.
Adam manages to work up enough courage to reach forward and grab your arm. He yanks you down into his chair with one swift movement before crashing his lips to yours in a heated kiss that he's been dreaming about for months now. And it's even better than what he's been shamelessly picturing in his mind.

You were merely watching television, a movie on the screen which you weren't really paying attention to. There was, however, one person on your mind, the same person who you weren't able to let go of no matter how hard you tried.
Seungcheol was everything, the best boyfriend you could've asked for but even the best people have issues. He liked to overwork himself. Staying late inside the Hybe building to finish certain things and even taking his work home which drove you up the wall.
Three beautiful years they were until yu both decided that it would be best to break up, to make sure you seperated so nobody would get hurt too much. It was the best decision but you still felt so lonely, so sad even after a year of being broken up.
It was when you were so deep in your thoughts that you felt it, the ground underneath you shook heavily and it should've scared you but it didn't. You frowned, stood up and walked towards the window. The sight in front of you was unerving to say the least.
Many people -- adults and children -- were running across the street, panicking and yelling. It struck you, this was serious. Everybody seemed to be rushing to get away, to escape death.
The movie you were originally watching on the tv got interrupted by a nation-wide broadcast, one with a warning popping up on the screen. The flashing lights and sounds caught your attention as you walked over to watch this broadcast.
"We interrupt your programming. This is a national emergency, The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has detected a significant environmental event that will impact the greater Asia. You and your loved ones should seek the nearest fallout shelter immediately. Please stand by for further area updates."
If the world was truly ending, why weren't you scared?
No, instead you looked down at your phone and opened the one contact you swore you'd block a couple months ago but couldn't. Seungcheol was active but as much as you wanted to text him, you couldn't. Your pride stood in your way.
Truly the broadcast said 'you and your loved ones' and he was, oh he was. You knew he still was your loved one but were you his? He could have a new partner for all you knew. It honestly broke your heart to think about.
Knowing everyone would be rushing to safe areas, you sat down on your couch. Was there truly a safe area when the world was about to fall down? Everyone would be dead anyways, why bother, right?
The sun was slowly setting, the ground beneath you shook once more but much heavier than the first time. You held onto the couch, unsure what was about to happen though it felt as if the world was being ripped apart.
A repeated knock on your door snapped you out of your thoughts, you frowned, unsure who would've been at your door when this all was going down. Maybe some people were there to try and convince you of seeking shelter.
You stumbled, trying to balance on the shaking ground. You managed to reach the door and pulled it open only to come face to face with him. You inhaled sharply when your eyes landed on his.
He looked good. You hadn't seen him for almost a year but he looked rather the same. His dark raven hair stuck to his forehead thanks to the rainwater which had drenched him, he was breathing heavily and looked as though he had ran to you.
"Cheol--"
His arms wrapped around you, holding onto you. A feeling of familiarity and safety washed over you. You allowed yourself to break down, tears streaming down your face as you let yourself fall against him. He closed the door behind you two and sat you down on the floor of your apartment. He cradled you against him.
It felt as though he was never gone, he smelled the same -- like home -- and if he wasn't holding onto you so tightly you would've believed you were dreaming. He was drenched, sure, but you couldn't care less. He was here, with you, at the end of the world.
"You're here." You whispered in disbelief. You hadn't expect it, to be completely honest but you had hoped for him to show up.
"Of course, I promised you once that whenever you needed me, I would come and I will. I always will."
Sure, he did make that promise but when you were dating for two years. You thought after the breakup this promise would've been forgotten but Choi Seungcheol was a man of his word.
"I missed you." He muttered against you as he stroked your hair. "I have been thinking about you a lot. . . about our anniversary."
You huffed out a laugh at the memory. "Do you mean when we were so intoxicated that we stumbled into the house together like morons?"
"We didn't even make it past the kitchen, passing out right there." He reminded you. "I love you, I always have."
"Believe me, I love you too."
The tv began to rummage again, the noise made the two of you look up and stare towards it. The flashing letters took over the screen once more, announcing another warning.
"Seek shelter immediately." You looked towards Seungcheol without moving an inch, already feeling at ease. "This broadcast will go dark in five," You took in his wet hair which you always loved to tie into ridiculous ponytails just to tease him.
"Four," Your gaze fixated on his eyes next, his beautiful dark brown eyes which never failed to put you at ease in whatever situation you two had found yourselves in.
"Three," Your hands took ahold of his, squeezing gently as you knew how hard reality would hit in a few seconds. His big hands held yours in a way that made you feel comfortable.
"Two," There was so much noise outside as though the sky was falling and crashing onto Earth. Your eyes, however, without a care for what happened outside, focused on Seungcheol's smile which he held to make you feel calmer.
"One--" He leaned forward, pressing his plush soft lips against yours as he held onto you. A final explosion near your house setting off and complete darkness blinding you.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
I listened to Myra’s slow breathing. Her mom had taken us out to dinner at a fancy vegan restaurant to celebrate Myra’s birthday and then we’d watched a movie. It was tradition. It had been a nice day until we were in bed and Myra started another tirade against the popular kids in school.
Tumblr media
I didn’t know what to say. She still didn’t know about the party last weekend, and I didn’t want to argue with her but I couldn’t quite bring myself to agree with her anymore. She ended up giving me the silent treatment until she fell asleep.
Tumblr media
I quietly got up and went to the bathroom. It was dark, but Myra and I had been best friends since kindergarten when her parents moved to Copperdale so her dad could work with my dad. I knew their house like it was my own.
Tumblr media
I washed my hands and looked at myself in the mirror. Was it really so bad to want more friends? To be a part of a group? Maybe I really was just a superficial person who wanted everyone to like me. I definitely wanted Oscar to like me. We hadn’t kissed since the party but we were messaging on Social Bunny every day, and yesterday we’d locked eyes across the hallway and I had to look away before Myra noticed.
Tumblr media
The lights were still on downstairs. Myra’s mom never went to bed before her dad came home from the hospital. My own mom did the same.
I quietly walked down the stairs and Daria looked up from her laptop.
Tumblr media
“Can’t sleep? Is Myra snoring again?”
“No, I’m just thinking a lot.”
“Want to talk about it?”
Tumblr media
I told her about the Spooky Day party. Somehow it had always been much easier to talk to Myra’s parents than to my own.
I did leave out the part about Oscar though.
Tumblr media
“So since then I’ve been posting a few pictures of other costumes I’ve made. And now some people are asking for tips and I thought it would be fun to maybe make a channel and stream the process or something. Or make tutorials and post them online.”
Tumblr media
“That sounds like a great idea! I’ve always been impressed with the stuff you come up with.”
“But what if Myra sees it as me just trying to be popular?”
Tumblr media
“And what exactly is wrong with being popular? She should be supporting you in whatever makes you happy. Myra has a lot of strong opinions, Griffin stubbornly insists she gets it from me. But don’t let her hold you back.”
Tumblr media
“Myra says having people like you online is dumb because they’re not real friends anyway.”
“Sometimes I think my darling daughter forgets what I do.”
Daria gestured towards her computer.
Tumblr media
“My podcast has a couple hundred thousand listeners. Are they all my friends? No. But some of them have actually become friends, because sharing what you love with a community that likes the same thing is a great way to meet people. You can even teach others and inspire them to share their own passions. I think you would do great, and I know you’re talented. But don’t take it from me, take if from those girls at school, because I’m probably too old and hopelessly uncool to listen to.”

I couldn’t help but smile. Daria was the coolest person I knew, second only to my grandpa Conrad. They didn’t care what people thought about them, but unlike Myra, they also didn’t spend hours talking about how little they supposedly cared.
Daria was telling me all about her podcasting gear when Myra’s father, Griffin, came home.
Tumblr media
“Evening, my love. Oh, hey Julia, you’re up late.”
“Hey Griffin. You’re right, I should probably go to bed.”
Tumblr media
“Alright, let us know if Myra’s snoring gets too bad, we still have spare earplugs.”
He winked at me.
Tumblr media
“And remember, we love to see what you do, Julia. So you’re guaranteed at least two followers who are also real friends.”
She stood, but then leaned down and kissed my forehead, just like she used to do when Myra and I were little.
Tumblr media
“Goodnight, kiddo. Don’t let anyone tell you how to live your life, OK? Not even my dear daughter. Always be yourself. And if you want more tips on getting a proper recording setup, just ask me.”

Meghan Markle Waves Goodbye To Her Rom-Com Dreams
We do? Rom-coms? I mean, yeah, it would be wonderful to have good movies again, of any genre. But with Meghan in charge, imagine the scripts she would commission. “When Harry Met Meghan, the Oppressed and Suicidal Actress.” “How to Lose a Prince in 10 Days.”  “10 Things I Hate About Kate.” “The Meghan Markle Story, Starring Meghan Markle.”
That last one’s more of a tragicomedy than a rom-com, sorry. But I understand why she wants to make Julia Roberts-style romantic comedies. After all, just a few years ago, she was lurking on Hollywood Boulevard auditioning for her big break when a prince in an Aston Martin cruised by and whisked her away to his palace. She has lived a real-life Cinderella story. Only this one may not have quite the same ending.
Petty Woman: Meghan Markle Waves Goodbye To Her Rom-Com Dreams
BY: PEACHY KEENAN JULY 03, 2023
The latest chapter in the Meghan character arc is about the content she and hapless Harry are trying to pitch to their paymasters in Beverly Hills.
Not all fairy tales have happy endings, and for Princess Meghan the clock just chimed midnight and the spell has been broken. The coach is turning back into a pumpkin as we speak.
As a longtime Royal Family watcher, I admit to feeling shameless glee as I read the recent stories of Meghan and Harry striking out in Hollywood. It’s always fun to watch dire low-stakes predictions come true. Like many of you, I was appalled at the disrespect Meghan showed to her in-laws. Instead of respecting the Queen, Meghan, incredibly, seemed to be trying to compete with the Queen. She thought she was playing a game of “Survivor,” but she was the only one on the island who didn’t know how to make a fire.
A Long Way Down for the Duchess
For those not keeping track, Meghan and her nitwit ginger sidekick have been dropped by Spotify, reportedly losing half of the $50 million promised. She got $25 million for a measly 12 hours of a middling podcast featuring the richest and most famous women in the world complaining about how hard their lives are. Netflix is reportedly about to cut their $100 million deal short. They finished milking them dry of low-hanging tabloid family gossip, and just found out they have no Act 2.
Nothing is working out the way she dreamed it would. Meghan’s imagined billionaire lifestyle is turning into a mirage. Why? Because for some hilarious reason, the creative bigwigs in Hollywood believed Meghan when she promised that her and Harry would be able to provide oodles of monetizable entertainment content.
I mean, yes, I am quite entertained by the spectacle, but schadenfreude is tough to monetize.
Meghan In Her Flop Era
Meghan’s predicament tells you everything about the people who run Hollywood. Imagine thinking that these two “f*cking grifters,” in the words of the Spotify exec who had to say no to Harry’s harebrained podcast ideas, would be a rich source of high-quality entertainment!
I can’t help wondering how a D-list golddigger convinced these studio heads that her and the ginger mouth breather would somehow provide $150 million worth of streaming content. It turns out that they’re only good at providing piles of steaming content, if you know what I mean.
I suppose it’s true, as movie producer Jackie Trehorn tells the Dude in “The Big Lebowski,” standards have fallen in entertainment. Since the Sussexes first ditched their careers as legit royalty and started groping for ephemeral Hollywood royalty, my fellow Meghan hobbyists and I have enjoyed a goldmine of unintentional comedy. She’s the Benny Hill of pampered Montecito trophy wives, always running downhill chased by imaginary paparazzi.
She’s been a source of delight since the early days when she was using a Sharpie to write inspirational messages on bananas to street prostitutes in England. “You are brave.” “You are loved.” Then the cringe-worthy trek through the thousand micro-aggressions she endured at the hands of her sister-in-law Catherine. Did she not realize everyone saw it for what it was: pure jealousy?
But now we come to the era of Meghan Markle, entertainment content creator. The latest chapter in the Meghan character arc is about the content she and hapless Harry are trying to pitch to their paymasters in Beverly Hills. It was clear that her long slide back into C-list obscurity had begun when I read an incredible tidbit in the trades earlier this year. Meghan was talking about her new content ideas she was working on for her “media production company.” See, it’s already funny!
Meghan gushed to a Variety reporter: “For scripted, we want to think about how we can evolve from that same space and do something fun! It doesn’t always have to be so serious. Like a good rom-com. Don’t we miss them? I miss them so much. I’ve probably watched ‘When Harry Met Sally’ a million times. And all the Julia Roberts rom-coms. We need to see those again.”
We do?
As Jeremy Zimmer, the CEO of United Talent Agency, one of the largest Hollywood talent agencies dished during Cannes to every reporter within earshot: “It turns out that Meghan Markle wasn’t a great audio talent, or necessarily has some kind of talent. And you know, just because you’re famous doesn’t mean you’re good at something.”
Ouch. I wonder if Jeremy Zimmer has seen the latest desperate pitch Meghan made to Netflix; a girlboss rom-com called “Bad Manners” starring … Miss Havisham. The show is “a prequel to Charles Dickens’s 1861 novel Great Expectations which will focus on the character Miss Havisham… [the show] aims to shine a feminist light on the spinster, showing her as a ‘strong woman living in a patriarchal society.’”
Who says comedy is dead? Sign me up for this one!
The article ends with the ominous “it is unclear whether the show will get a green light from Netflix.”
Meghan is learning, finally, the hardest lesson of all: real royalty may be hereditary, but Hollywood royalty has to be earned. Popularity matters. Likeability, in the end, is the only currency that matters if you wear no crown.

You People (dir. Kenya Barris).
Barris directs comedian Jonah Hill (also co-writer/producer) in the mismatched interracial romantic comedy riff on the Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner formula with shades of Meet the Parents. [It’s] a refreshingly amusing take on contemporary racial tensions while injecting hot topic elements of our current social climate.

My Favourite Streams/Podcasts/ to do chores to (in no particular order):
1. Jacob and Julia having a NICE, CUTE TIME in LEMON CAKE - in which Jacob and Julia beef with the ghost character that teaches you to play the game and create a little gremlin of a player character who says the most bizarre things.
2. Brittany Broski | Ghost Stories, World War 1, Call of Duty- I love pretty much every podcast/ Interview Brittany is in, but something about this one hits different. This one has Brittany and Zach discussing fan fiction, fictional crushes and the relationship between influencer and celebrity.
3. Not Another D&D Podcast- Emily Axford's Iconic Moments Compilation- Genuinely one of the funniest videos I've ever watched, featuring exasperated Murph, Emily saying combinations of words I could never have anticipated and a song about hemp milk.
4. Gamefee Plays The Game of Life- Chill vibes, Nathan has seven loans, Karina is roleplaying as Legoshi from Beastars and chaos is abound. Featuring special appearances from the producers (their cats)!!!
5. Ranking Things 100% Perfectly (And No One Gets Upset) - The Drawfee gang rank types of potatoes ("Aww, people are saying smiley fries are S-tier? Don't you have to be 13 to have a Twitch account?"- Karina), discuss which animated wolves are and are not sexy and share sandwich opinions.
6. The Wrong Stream- This is probably one of my favourite on this list. In this one we learn about "The Wrong__" series of movies, discuss Traitors Australia and find out that an otter in a room full of bears is a Twink.
7. Why I left the Christian Church, The Broski report- The title may seem intimidating, but in this one, Brittany talks about her debilitating crush on a cosplayer (and the fact that he posts dick online), and then breaks down Ethel Cain' s The Preacher's Daughter. Equal parts hilarious, poignant and resonant, this one is good for mindless chores like doing the dishes.

59. I don't ask for much, gimme love
Tumblr media
Masterlist - Previously - Next
Chapter soundtrack: Gimme Love - Sia
Julia would have loved to stay with Ethan a little more but he had a few meetings to intend to and didn’t know exactly when he would be back. She had come back to her room and changed before texting Romy to know if she wanted to come for a movie after her duties. The blonde had yet to reply but it didn’t worry Julia, she knew she was busy. She took a well needed shower before preparing everything. She even had the time for a quick chat with her brother. She realized it was starting to get late and she had no news from Romy, worry settled in her. She was about to text her once again to know if she was still up for the movie when she heard a loud bang on her door and her best friend storming in the room when she opened her door. She didn’t straight away notice the tears streaming down on Romy’s face but when she did, she didn’t ask questions and took her in her arms. It was the last straw for the German driver who broke down in Julia’s embrace.
“I… I think Kyle and I are over.”
“What? What do you mean, you are over? What happened?”
“Kyle asked me to marry him and I said no.”
Julia felt the need to sit, forcing her best friend to do the same.
“Okay, tell me what happened exactly.”
“I broke his heart, Julia, there is nothing more to explain.”
“But… I don’t understand… you love him? You told me you wanted a family with him… I assumed that marrying him was on your list. Fine, maybe not that soon, but one day…”
“Because it doesn’t come from love! Do you know how he proposed? If I can even call that proposing… I came back from Audi's meeting and I was getting ready to meet you when he knocked. He was fidgety and it didn’t really come as a surprise, he fucked up his quali. You know that a P8 for him is like finishing last. I tried to calm him down, to say that it wasn’t the worst, that he could come out on top, Vegas is made for that. He looked me dead in the eye and said that he wasn’t racing tomorrow. That he didn’t say to the doctor before quali that his migraines came back and that it was getting worse. That he was terrified of losing his eyesight. And that he wanted to marry me tonight because at least he would be able to see me. Not even an I love you, just I want to see you in white before losing everything. That’s…..selfish!”
Romy took her head between her hands and cried some more. Julia felt powerless. She threw an arm around her best friend’s shoulders to pull her against her.
“He loves you Romy. He loves you so much. He is scared to lose you more than anything.”
“I love him too. It’s just… I want to marry him. One day. Not today. I’m not ready and I don’t want to do it out of fear. We will regret it.”
“Did you tell him?” Julia asked.
“No… I just told him that I couldn’t and I left.” Romy admitted sheepishly.
“Romy! If there is one thing that I learned from Ethan’s and I breakup it’s to not run away without explanation! It will make them freak out!”
“I know! I messed up, I panicked, okay? Gosh… what did I do?”
“Call him. Or at least text him, to let him know that you’re okay.”
She felt the blonde nodding before standing up, taking her phone out of her pocket to text Kyle. Meanwhile, Julia took the opportunity to boil some water for tea. Once done and once Romy finally managed to calm down, they sat down on the bed with their hot tea.
“Can I stay with you tonight? I don’t want to be alone…” Romy asked.
“You don’t even have to ask.”
But as soon as Romy hit her pillow, sleep and emotional exhaustion from the day caught up to her. Julia put the cover on her best friend and slowly and without making any noise left her. Her first instinct was to go to Ethan. If someone might have heard about the situation it might have been him. She hoped he wasn’t sleeping. She would feel bad to disturb him. When she arrived in front of his door, she knocked and she backed down when the door opened immediately and closed soon after.
“Sorry…” he apologized, noticing her surprised expression. “Kyle’s in there.” he added.
“In the same emotional state as Romy, I guess.”
“If by emotional state, you mean a mess, then yeah. I swear I could fill up a bottle with only his tears.”
“He screwed up. In a very cute way.”
“I know. It was a stupid idea. I know it’s Vegas and it might have been fitting in other circumstances but telling him to marry him just because he wants to see her when he’ll say ‘I do’ was not the best way to propose. I tried to tell him that maybe he is overreacting with his eyesight. That maybe, just like the doctor said, it will stabilize at some point and he won’t turn entirely blind but he is obsessed with the idea that he could. No matter how low the chances might get.” Ethan sighed.
“Romy is sure he will want to break up, now…”
“No way in hell. Kyle made his choice a long time ago. He chose Romy. And Kye is probably the most loyal guy I’ve come across. That’s not for no reason Ludwig and I call him the golden retriever. Once he has decided that you were his friend, he doesn’t change his mind. It’s for life. If Romy didn’t give up on him when he told her about his eyes, then nothing will make him break up with her unless she decides otherwise. She is the one who is in control. How is she?”
“She is sleeping but yeah… she is no better than him. But it also has been a tough few weeks for her, for Kyle too I’m not saying it was not. It’s just… she lost a baby. Apparently it didn’t go well with Kyle’s parents and…” she was interrupted by Ethan’s laughs. “What?”
“Of course it couldn’t go well. Kyle is from Kentucky and his parents were clearly not the richest. He grew up in a farm. It’s everything Romy hates.”
“Hey, she grew up on a farm too!”
“Not the same kind, Joolsie.”
She shrugged. He leaned against the wall before sitting on the floor, as she did the same. He let his head slightly bang against the beige surface, closing his eyes and taking a deep breath before finally looking at her.
“That’s not nice, though… kicking you out of your own bed when you start on pole tomorrow. Are you sure it’s not his strategy?”
“That would be a mean one. And he didn’t kick me out. I could totally sleep in the bed if I wanted, even if he is there. I’ve done it in the past. Plenty of times. With Ludwig too. Sometimes it was us three in the same bed. Good times.”
“I don’t want to know.”
“Oh no, you don’t.” he winked at her, trying to make her blush on purpose.
They kept on talking for a while until Julai noticed that Ethan was starting to get really tired and her as well.
“You should go to sleep, you have a race to win tomorrow.”
“True. One that is not the race to your heart.” he joked, trying to repress a yawn.
“You won that one a long time ago, dummy.” she playfully punched his shoulder as he embraced her in a hug.
As she was about to leave him, not without a kiss on the cheek, he shyly asked.
“You’ll watch the whole race, right?”
“Until the very end.”
Las Vegas had always been a race that Julia loved to hate. The sparkles, the events, the VIPs were replacing the interest of the race when the track was a very good one. Somehow, she was glad to spend the race in Audi’s hospitality, it wasn’t as crowded as other hospitalities. She knew Ferrari and Lamborghini were getting the most prestigious VIPs and she was glad to at least have a little somewhere where cameras wouldn’t film her. Unfortunately for her, as she was about to enter the Audi’s facility, she was stopped by a Sky Sport journalist shoving his microphone and the camera to her face.
“And we are here with Miss Julia Leclerc. After being laid off by Ferrari, did you decide to give Audi a try?”
“Well… first off, I’m not being laid off, we reached a mutual agreement saying that for personal reasons it would be better for me to start working for Ferrari in two years. Second, I’m here to support my best friend.”
“Romy Schumacher starts right behind Ethan Verstappen, your ex-boyfriend. We saw you watching qualifying yesterday from his garage, did you rekindle an old flame? For whom your heart is beating tonight?”
“For the best driver. Thank you.”
She hated the implicit judgment in those questions, it was so unprofessional from them. She had always hated journalists and they didn’t even bother to try to show her that she could change her mind. She smiled at the staff present there and sat in a corner of the room, taking out her sketchbook to draw. For some reason, the Eiffel Tower was what popped into her mind. She smiled at the memory. It was dear to her. It was so special. She took her necklace between her thumb and pointer fingers and looked at the replica of her dad’s trophy. She had never taken it off. Not even when she had been with Martin, which should have been a clear indicator that her feelings for Ethan were way stronger than what she wanted to admit to herself.
“What are you thinking about?” Romy’s voice startled her.
“How stupid I’ve been about Ethan.”
“I’m not going to tell you otherwise.”
“Have you been able to see Kyle?” Julia carefully asked.
“Yeah… we made up. Kinda. I mean… he didn’t really let me talk. If you know what I mean.”
“I have an idea, yeah.”
“We will have to talk, though. We have many things to discuss. Like… I’m thinking of something. It’s a big step but I want him to move in with me. I have a big house, easy to rearrange for it to be more convenient for him. It’s quiet, peaceful. It has an amazing view of the mountains… What do you think?” The blond shyly asked her friend.
“Romy! That’s amazing! That’s a huge step, for sure. But you are meant to be, it’s only logical.”
“I guess I’m just scared because it means that next year we will truly be together twenty-four on seven.”
“You will have a break on race weekends.”
“Well, no… gosh, you don’t know!” Romy exclaimed.
“I don’t know what?”
“Kyle wants to do one last year in F1 before retiring. He doesn’t feel confident in a car anymore and he decided to race for Audi. He doesn’t want the pressure of the championship. He wants to race for fun and he wants to have me as his teammate…. I thought Ethan would have told you.”
“Kyle is going to retire…. that's news I’ve never thought I would hear this soon. I mean, I understand it’s just a shock. He is going to leave with three world championships under his belt, it’s nice. Does he know what he wants to do after?”
“Support me. He said he would turn to my personal handyman.” she smiled at the thought.
“Who is going to replace him in Lambo, then?”
Romy shrugged.
“It’s not my problem and to be honest I don’t care. I would love to keep on chatting with you but I have a win to snatch from your ex-boyfriend. Or is it boyfriend now? Soon-to-be boyfriend? I can’t keep up with you guys, you have to make a choice.”
Julia laughed, shaking slightly her head as she saw her best friend leaving her. Soon, the race was about to start and she decided to go to the garage. It was stupid to stay hidden there when everyone knew she was an Audi’s guest. As soon as the lights went out, Julia understood it would be a close race. Romy was determined to overtake Ethan, even if she had to play dirty and Ethan didn’t want to let her. Julia could only hope they wouldn’t be stupid enough to ruin their chances. It was close until, sadly, Ludwig sent his car in the barriers, and the safety car arrived on track. She heard Audi frustrated sighs in the garage as they had pitted her right before the yellow flag. Julia felt a little bad for her friend, especially after hearing the torrent of insults coming out of her mouth on the radio. But she couldn’t help but smile when she saw Maserati’s brilliantly executed double pit-stop. Chloe was leading the race, followed by Ethan.
They were racing amazingly together, helping each other out when they could in an attempt to increase the gap between them and Romy who had managed to get back in third place. The more the laps went by the more Julia could dream of a Maserati double podium, the first one in their history. Words of encouragement were screamed in the garage for Romy but hers were for the car number thirty-two that had just managed to take back the first place, five laps before the checkered flag. When there were two laps to go and it was clear for everyone that it would be a Maserati’s win, she slowly made her way out of the garage to approach the team. They were preparing to rush to wait for their drivers. She was about to stay in a corner, when Ethan’s physiotherapist noticed her and told her to come to the front.
Finally, she saw the cars entering the last straight line. A quick look to the giant screens indicated to her that it was Ethan who was still leading and her heartbeat increased to the point she thought it was going to leap out of her chest. The fresh air hit her nose but her cheeks were burning. She felt happy and she could get used to that feeling. When they waved the checkered flag the whole team started to hug and scream in her ears. She was pulled into warm embraces from left to right but didn’t mind it.
When Ethan finally parked his car and jumped out of it to run to his team she saw a slight shift in his attitude and she knew he had noticed her. Her thought was soon confirmed when she was the first one he took in his arms, almost crushing her against the barriers. She heard his voice but was unable to understand what he was saying. She knew the cameras were on them but she didn’t care, all that mattered was him. She raised his visor to see his glossy blue eyes.
“You stayed. You’re here.” he said.
“Of course. I promised you.”
She saw him hesitating to leave, looking lost. When he finally was rushed to go to the cool down room, he quickly kissed her knuckles and winked at her. The podium celebrations went on in a blur, she quickly snapped a picture, thinking a mostly feminine podium had a nice look. When champagne arrived she quickly escaped to make her way to Ethan’s driver room.
It was the best scenario she had imagined, Ethan winning, on cloud nine and her giving him a gift she had spent countless hours perfecting. Her hands were sweaty. She hoped he would like it, she hoped he wouldn’t find it stupid, she hoped it would convey everything she was feeling for him and more. She sat on the couch and retrieved it from her bag before putting it down on the coffee table. Now she just had to wait.
Fortunately for her, she didn’t have to wait for long as soon the door opened, revealing Ethan, his head down and out of breath. And when he saw her, his smile intensified as he rushed to her, trying to make her spin but failing as the room was not made for that. Instead, he kept her close to him, savoring the instant.
“For a moment, I thought you had left. I ran as fast as I could to change so I could see you.”
“I promised you I would stay.”
“I know, it’s just… It’s still hard for me to fully believe you, I think.” he confessed.
“Well, I have something for you that maybe will help you believe it.”
She led him to the couch, showing him the present. He gave her a weird look before unwrapping it to find a huge book that looked like a photo album.
“It’s a scrapbook. I made it myself. It’s filled with a lot of personal things.”
Shyly he started to open it. He recognised pieces of a vision board he knew well to have made one, years ago, when they were in the same class. The bright red dream to work with her dad was surrounded by little doodles of what he noticed were related to him. His first helmet, his first kart, his first trophy. Under each of the little doodles was written the age she had drawn them. Eighth, twelve years old, thirteen and so on. He kept on discovering the pages, smiling at pictures of  what seemed to be memories of her life when she was younger. Happy ones. He looked at her, eyes full of questions.
“Keep reading. I’ll explain later.”
He thought his heart was going to stop when he saw the next pictures. Julia and Louis. The karting day. The frame he had thrown against a wall and the picture he had to cut in half. With a shaking hand he brushed it, trying to memorize the lines of their faces. He thought he would never see it again. He had deleted the original picture on his phone. And then were pictures of each track they had gone to and pictures of them, more and more present as they had grown closer. They were  still surrounded with sketches, but the captions were not the same. It was his eyes at first, then his lips, his nose, and his eyes and nose, his nose and lips until a full portrait. That’s when she made him look at her.
“Before you discover the last page, I wanted to tell you what it meant exactly. You’ve always been a part of me, for longer than I’ve thought. You’ve always been there, wandering in the corner of my mind. Taking a lot of space. You’re a part of me. This scrapbook encompasses all that I am. All that I ever was and all that I long to be. It’s a small zoom on my life. A life I want to share with you. It felt right to give that to you. Keep your time to look at everything. I've been writing little stupid anecdotes here and there. There are many things to find out and when you’ll have seen everything, I hope you’ll understand that I’m serious when it comes to us. I want to make another scrapbook in a few years but this time filled with what we are. Because I love you, more than I’ve ever loved anyone. And I want to share everything with you. If only you let me. Now, here comes the last page.”
The last page was a copy of her bucket list but right next to it was glued a little package. He carefully opened it to take a red bracelet he knew very well.
“It’s yours.”
“Julia…. It's a family heirloom… I can’t accept it. It holds such a special place in your family history…”
“You’re family. You’re the family I’m choosing. You’re the family I will always choose. I’m not going anywhere, not now and not ever. I’m done running away. I’m done self sabotaging, I’m done pretending, I’m done playing. It’s you and me. And I’m sorry it took me so long, I’m sorry I broke your heart, I’m sorry I thought I wasn’t enough for you, I’m sorry about a lot of things. But I’m not sorry to love you with everything that I am and will be. So, please, take it.”
He put it around his wrist before locking his gaze with hers. She was calmly smiling, her breathing was even and if her eyes were glossy, she was still serene. Confident. Happy. She was metaphorically giving herself to him in a way he had never thought she would. He took her hands in his, at a loss of words and only shook his head as if he couldn’t believe it.
“Julia… I ….”
“You don’t have to say anything.”
He caressed her cheek, moving away a few strands of hair before looking at her lips.
“If I don’t have to say something, maybe I can still show you what I’m feeling right now.” he said, leaning it, dying to feel her lips on his but was quickly stopped by her firm hand on his chest.
“Nope. The next time you’ll kiss me, I want it to be special. Like really special and for that I need you to be a little bit more patient.”
“You’re trying to kill me. Tell me, what have you planned?”
“As if I was going to tell you. You’ll see. Soon.”
She kissed his cheek, lingering a little more than necessary, making him even more flustered. But when she left, Ethan knew. Their right time had arrived. They were ready. She was ready. And a part of him was curious to see what else she had planned to do.
