What's your favorite Goncharov (1973) scene?
Although I think the ending to be one of the most accomplished pieces of screenwriting ever transposed on film (the iconic antiquated visual effects were even maniacally reprised by Coppola in his Bram Stoker's Dracula), that toll of doom which we realize too late had been falling on Goncharov from the very first scene (the clock tower beating noon and his father's pocket watch always proudly being "on time"), and that eventually gives us the merciless closure that deconstructs story, characters and viewers, actually having done nothing, minute after minute, if not constructing a perfect full-circle tragedy, with the genius metaphor of the clock-hand that always, inevitably, circles back to twelve -, I think my personal favourite is the scene in which Katya, after Goncharov's repeated film-length teasing about his mother's Spaghetti & Vodka being inimitable, used her very heirloom silver sieve to dust a lethal amount of cocaine on them instead of parmesan and serving them à la Преступление и наказание, only to throw them on the floor in extremis, proving yet again unable to directly murder Goncharov, too deep a love not to try to kill, and fail.
