Late Night with the Devil (dir. Colin & Cameron Cairnes).
It has a clever found footage mockumentary structure in the style of a 1970s late night talk show, but the premise shows its limitations after the prologue's extensive exposition. Still, David Dastmalchian's starring role as a troubled midwestern TV personality buckling under the pressure of possible cancellation while mourning his deceased wife anchor the film's satanic possession elements ably. However, there's absolutely no way this low-rent Jerry Springer Show knockoff would somehow ever be considered a competitor to the cultural behemoth of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.

God Save Texas x "Hometown Prison" (prod. Richard Linklater).
It's hard time imagine what it's like growing up in a place surrounded by and economically reliant on the unjust mass incarceration and human suffering of others who are essentially your neighbours. Linklater's affecting documentary, chronicling his hometown of Hunstville and its dubious notoriety for housing the Texas State Prison system, follows an absorbing personal journey as part of HBO's omnibus documentary series inspired by Lawrence Wright's book of the same name, bringing native Texan filmmakers back to the Lone Star State.

The Gentlemen (prod. Guy Ritchie).
Netfix's British crime series about the UK drug trade, loosely inspired by the 2020 film of the same name, also by Ritchie, has fun navigating the stylish gangster subgenre the filmmaker helped revitalize in the late-'90s. What's most enjoyable is how the sketchy but mostly likeable characters engage their complex business entanglements from episode to episode without becoming too repetitive. It brings some much-needed civility to the criminal underworld.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (dir. Gil Kenan).
I kind of miss when Ghostbusters movies were actual comedies. However, it's also kind of a relief Kenan and co-writer/producer Jason Reitman sidestepped that tricky task (starting in Afterlife) to instead further cement the paranormal franchise into more family-friendly horror adventure territory. While there's a ton of fan service and more than a few unclear details about the present day New York City's relationship with our favourite crew of supernatural protectors, the emergence of Phoebe Spengler (Mckenna Grace) as the central character and heart of these films is a much-needed bright spot. Her misfit coming-of-age (queer-coded) arc alongside a new ghost friend spotlights a welcome contemporary direction.

Snack Shack (dir. Adam Carter Rehmeier).
Conor Sherry and Gabriel LaBelle star as slightly douchey best friends in early-'90s Nebraska City coming up with petty schemes to make money, drink beer, avoid trouble, and impress girls. On the surface, the typical teen summer movie shenanigans seem lightweight but reveal more emotional complexities to the immature characters slyly through adolescent adventures hanging out at the public pool. It's a good time to side-steps the usual perils of the less evolved era its set in.

Immaculate (dir. Michael Mohan) x SXSW 2024.
Mohan and [Sydney] Sweeney tackle religious horror with a slow burn bent before going all-out. Immaculate would have benefited from going even further and dialling up both the tension and camp. The film commits, but the truly batsh*t crazy finale could have better elevated from sowing its camp horror violence earlier and throughout before the reason behind the virgin pregnancy. However, it doesn't quite have the conviction of its own aims.
