i am just a filipino gal. das it. filipino so see there i didn't put fil-american cus i aint. i say this to say i will truly not know racism felt by poc in the west.
but i am still filipino, asian. i am still a woc nevertheless. so tho i know ms marvel wasn't perfect, i still really loved it anyways. and here is my pov on it. we shouldn't shy away from criticism and we should let passionate hard worked art be what it is. imperfect but tried so hard is what i got from it.
i oft don't know how to find the "right place" in morality in general. should we celebrate a groundbreaking piece of work and let people enjoy things when it is literally the first they're getting of it?
or should we rightly call it out for its hurtful misconducts?
i think what i want to say is
don't let anyone take away your joy. if that art makes you happy, hold onto it tight and don't ever let go. let yourself be happy. imo, your joy is what matters the most in the end.
don't feel bad for liking it. what you felt is real and valuable and worth celebrating and loving.
and we should never shy away from criticism. EVER. criticism ESPECIALLY from the people you're writing the stories about are what matter the most.
we shouldn't be afraid to call something we love as imperfect or hurtful because to love something is to accept it in the truth, the entirety of all that it is.
to deny or run away from its imperfections or the hurt it had would be swaying away discrimination under the rug. and put a full on stop to change. if ms. marvel was perfect, why would there be a need to change or improve on anything, right?
WE NEED TO CRITICIZE. WE NEED TO CALL OUT THE WRONG.
it is the ONLY way things will get better.
we can't shed a light on the truth if we're too afraid of the hurt.
i get it.
you FINALLY get something you love that feels so you... and the world is telling you it isn't enough.
that's why i said the very first thing i said. your joy matters no matter what. don't let anyone take it away from you.
it's important to speak up because that is how thoughtful conversations start and change and understanding can actually happen. you just have to be brave enough to risk being wrong.
but it's okay to be wrong. what matters is starting and trying. because once you start, as long as you keep speaking up on what is lacking, there will always be an infinite amount of ways to make things better.

I'm an Asian Woman. I can relate to Taylor Swift like I can relate to Shang-chi.
A favorite moment of mine, of the person I'm dedicating this post to, happens in an interview that barely has any views (relatively, when compared, that is).
It's when Mr. Cretton told the youtubers "The Film Rejects" that he watched their reaction to the first Shang-chi trailer and greg & dave promptly appropriately lost their shit :') <3.
And in that same interview, when dave remarked that he was white and that he just liked movies, mr. cretton said, "and i have both of you in me."
It is the humanity, those small moments of character and connection that... is the reason why shang-chi fucking rocked me to my core.
it is so present with mr. cretton and it's why it's so present with the film.
mr. cretton is a film director who watches the trailer reactions of youtubers to his film.
he's a biracial man and honestly, i kinda connect with that. cause like i said, i'm asian and i'm a woman. that feeling of being in two places at once and being able to connect to both but also being in between?
i get that.
so, this is me speaking now, and this is me saying happy birthday to probably my favorite filmmaker of all time, and my fellow sagittarius heh :''D <333.

The Letter:
it started with a photo, to be honest.
a couple of photos that hinted at something pure sweet and special underneath.
the photo of simu with an asian woman i didn't recognize then.
it piqued my interest. it was such a sweet tiny little thing… only noticed by the people who followed mr. cretton, or if you were like me, waiting and SCROUNGING for any scraps of shang-chi content I could get cause I just… IT WAS SPECIAL TO ME AND I ALREADY LOVED IT SO MUCH AND I WAS SO EXCITED FOR IT TOT.
this photo was just so sweet even when I didn’t know who meng’er was…
it just… conveyed so much joy happiness and celebration.
even if you didn’t know anything about what was happening in the photo and who these people were… it just conveyed so much joy & love.
and I don’t know which came first, watching just mercy or seeing those dedication posts mr. cretton did…
but it was just mercy that convinced me, the moment I knew… shang-chi was going to fucking destroy me.
it’s sort of a shame I wasn’t able to capture & commemorate the night our entire fam watched shang-chi…
but I’ll know the memory of that night will be burned into my brain forever.
(and not just cause it was also red tv day. honestly nov 12 truly was the day I died tbh hah)
you see, my family and I aren’t often complete, mr. cretton. but because of this pandemic, for the worst (if we’re being honest) and just silver linings of better, we were.
I feel…
I feel happy, to be alive, to have experienced that moment.
those moments of laughter with my entire family because of shang-chi.
for once, we were complete. and we were celebrating something asian. and we were having fun, SO MUCH FUN, together <3.
we talked, we ate, we laughed, we REJOICED. when shang-chi took down the mega soul sucker bitch (XD), the eldest sister and brother in our family literally shouted out loud “PROOF THAT THE DWELLER IN DARKNESS HAS A HEART” cause… cause it was like shang gave them an arc reactor?? right??? XD XD XD X’’’’D
we just… we laughed so much in shang-chi, mr. cretton.
I get teary eyed just reminiscing of how happy & just how much we enjoyed and loved the humor in the film.
I’m two ways, because on one hand, some critics have points in the what ifs. what if shang wasn’t a studio film and you were given full creative control…
if you were given more time
if this wasn’t like, the one shot you guys had to prove yourselves
(cause i… I genuinely FEEL AND BELIEVE, that fueled your filmmaking process. you guys tried to do as much cool awesome complex stuff as you could since WHO THE FUCK KNOWS IF YOU’LL BE ABLE TO DO IT AGAIN RIGHT?? this was your one shot. you guys were going to make it count and put as much heart & complexity in it as much as you could.)
would the film be more focused on the emotional moments? be able to go even deeper into the characters’ history and humanity?
EVEN THOUGH I WILL FUCKING ARGUE TO THE DEATH. THAT SHANG CHI HAS INFINITE TIMES MORE HUMANITY THAN EVERY OTHER FUCKING MCU ORIGIN MOVIE (MAYBE EVERY SINGULAR MOVIE). GO AHEAD. TRY ME, BITCH. I’M BEGGING YOU, FIGHT ME-

I just… I think that moment held… so much.
I think that moment held all, EVERY LOVE YOU HAD IN YOUR ENTIRE BEING FOR YOUR FAMILY… I think it was in that moment. and it was in every fucking moment of this film.
like how wenwu did everything for his family… you did everything for yours. YOU DID ALL OF THIS FOR YOURS.

I just think… that first moment where you held your child, for the very first time, welcoming them & bringing them into the world…

THE MOMENT WITH HIM GIVING THE RINGS SYMBOLIZING HIM BEING WORTHY OF IT.
ESSENTIALLY HIM SAYING HE’S PROUD OF HIM WITHOUT ACTUALLY SAYING IT CAUSE HE’S STILL FUCKING ASIAN AFTER ALL.
CAUSE the thing about asians is so much of us is such wordless unacknowledged love & devotion
it truly is such an actions speak louder than words culture
slight brief looks & glances can mean Everything, and they do.

i see ignorant people push aside this unique story and it angers me.

in the end, the "villain" ended up reforming himself. redeeming himself.

just cause the conversations aren't shouty & flashy doesn't mean they aren't as important.

the humor family & love & compassion & kindness?
shang chi is such an asian story
you often have to grapple with your heritage with where it stands in modern society
but shang chi allows that choice to just be

you can be both
you get to decide which parts you take up
that's your right
you get to just be you
action was epic. relationships were everything.
so much kindness and love and family and life filled the film.
i'll never forget the look of excitement my siblings had as we watched shang & katy literally get welcomed with open arms into the marvel universe :')
