SAW STRANGE WORLD. MOVIE GOOD!! GOOD MOVIE. GO SEE MOVIE shame on disney for trying to bury this beautiful film. Discussion of generational trauma, hard decisions re: fuel sources and having an overtly gay main character? it's sad to say I can see why they tried. Failed! but tried.

Finally watched it and I think some of y'all are giving Goncharov a little too much credit for the depth you're reading into Katya and Sofia's storyline?
Like it's definitely outpacing some of its contemporaries in terms of misogyny but it's not like there's none. Scorcese's films are literally all interrogations of masculinity, and the way the story does Katya dirty is par for the course in that respect?
I mean, the film barely passes the Bechdel test and that's only in one (1) scene, and I debate even that because even if Katya and Sofia aren't talking about men directly, they're still talking about men abstractly.
I know the scene is really bittersweet but it's a clear parallel and foreshadowing to Goncharov and Andrey's final scene, and even what Katya says about love is referencing her feelings for Goncharov? Just because she doesn't say his name doesn't absolve it of being about a man 😂
By all means ship Katfia, lord knows I do, and it's still a great film. Not all films have to be feminist masterpieces. I just think y'all are giving Scorcese too much credit for how things between Katya and Sofia played out, and I don't want any new watchers to get their hearts broken (like I did lmao) thinking this film gives them more than like, 15 lines each.

i really enjoyed 'see how they run'. it's such a slight movie, there's no romance or anything in it, no real emotional impact, it's just a comedy-mystery movie about two police officer trying to solve a murder surrounding the production of 'the mousetrap' play, and it's very entertaining. loved sam rockwell's performance, and that is a very good english accent, and i'd always die for saoirse ronan.

i say i like tragedies and everyone’s all like ‘why do you like sad stories? are you depressed?’ and never ‘how was the catharsis? was the catharsis fun?’

OK THIS IS NOT A FUCKING DRILL EVERYONE FUCKING REPEAT AFTER ME. THIS IS WHAT YOU WILL DO WHEN YOU WATCH MUPPET CHRISTMAS CAROL THIS YEAR:
You will navigate to the page on disney plus (and it has to be here. Unless someone has actually uploaded the REAL movie anywhere else you cannot get it elsewhere)
BUT YOU WILL NOT HIT PLAY. You won’t do it. Because it’s NOT THE REAL VERSION OF THE FILM AND DISNEY IS FUCKING LYING TO YOU AS IT ALWAYS DOES
Tumblr media
You will scroll down HERE. To EXTRAS instead. You MUST GO HERE. This is non -negotiable
Tumblr media
THEN YOU WILL SCROLL DOWN TO THE BOTTOM OF THE EXTRAS AND YOU WILL THEN HIT PLAY ON THIS BAD BOY: THE FULL LENGTH VERSION
And you will watch it. And you will thank me for having been so blind and led astray by that stupid fucking mouse. You’re welcome.

it's almost like... if you play a movie in 10 cinemas worldwide, it doesn't do as well as it could 🤯🤯

"why should I get invested in shows if they'll just get canceled" I was deeply invested in Heroes (2006) and it was not canceled, it just got really terrible. I also got really invested in the sandwich I had a few weeks ago despite it only lasting like 15 minutes. You must embrace the ephemeral. You must be willing to love things that may not love you back, that might betray you, or that may die an untimely death. As the great philosopher Mr. Mitchell Lee Hedberg said "I'm not gonna stop doing something because of what happens at the end."

Insisting that there's only one good MCU film can be a much more effective way of winding up MCU fans than insisting that they all suck, but you've gotta pick the right one. If you claim Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the only good MCU film, they'll probably just be like "I disagree, but I can understand how you'd feel that way"; if you insist with a straight face that Thor: The Dark World is the only good MCU film you can get them to write entire essays about how wrong you are.

idk how to put this into a coherent thought but. the way the visions of heloise in her wedding dress don't appear until after the bonfire scene, where the image of heloise distorts in the fire and the layers of the future and the past collapse in on themselves. heloise looks at the camera, not as herself towards the marianne she knew but as a manifestation of marianne's guilt looking towards the marianne from the future looking back. her, on fire, looking towards marianne with almost condemnation in her eyes. it's a moment a step aside from reality, as real as the visions of her in her wedding dress. this scene bleeds into the next, the only instance of non-diegetic music in the film
from then on the future crashes in on the past, the events doubling as what happened and also the emotional arc of future marianne to accept what happened. marianne tries to forget, to continue through the memories, but the vision of heloise in her wedding dress always comes to haunt her. you know. you know what's coming, even when you try to forget.
it all comes to a head in the fight and the beach scene. there's a double meaning to those scene yk? both as in what literally happened and also heloise as marianne's guilt, marianne interrogating herself. and then the beach scene, where she finally breaks, in the event itself but also in the future looking back, where she finally embraces her grief in losing heloise, finally having catharsis.
(also this might be a stretch but in the 'when do we know it's finished' / 'it's finished' exchange, their voices are produced the way marianne's voice over is produced)
and then marianne outside the room with the countess and heloise, steeling herself to go in, again both as what literally happened and also future marianne steeling herself to confront this last memory. her running away but called back by heloise, turning around and seeing heloise in her wedding dress, seeing and finally accepting it. "you were sad" / "not anymore"
