love watching any dracula adaptation and seeing jonathan harker react to being sent to transylvania like "😳 transylvania....... the land of legend where wolves and ghosts walk the earth to this day........" and it's literally just. a region of romania where my grandpa was The Guy With The Bike in the village and my dad went to see the first star wars in 1982 because cinemas weren't up to date and where my great grandpa once said good morning to his wife's nightgown drying on the line because he forgot his glasses

just watched Nosferatu (1922) and I will say I did not expect the comedic elements. Nosferatu running around carrying his coffin? might’ve been the funniest scene created unintentionally

I’ve been subscribed to your YouTube channel for a while and especially love all your horror / horror-adjacent videos, so I’m curious: what are your top 5 must-watch horror movies?
hmmm! there's multiple ways i could interpret the question
if "must-watch" = a primer on the history of horror, there's a heap of obvious picks--godzilla, night of the living dead/day of the dead, suspiria, black christmas, the exorcist, alien, ganja & hess, videodrome, possession, the thing, candyman, blair witch, perfect blue, american psycho, the babadook, get out, shin godzilla, etc etc--but youve probably seen several of those
if "must watch" = notable movies that you NEED to drop everything and see if you havent:
don't look now (1973 dir. nicolas roeg)
nosferatu the vampyre (1979 dir. werner herzog)
prince of darkness (1987 dir. john carpenter)
candyman (1992 dir. bernard rose) (yes im double dipping what of it)
pontypool (2008 dir. bruce mcdonald)
im cheating and lumping the entire david lynch hollywood trilogy into one: lost highway (1997), mulholland drive (2001), inland empire (2006). you can flip the order on the first two but make sure to watch inland empire last
if "must-watch" = extremely good movies with slightly less notoriety:
the appointment (1982 dir. lindsey vickers)
the church (1989 dir. michele soavi)
eli eli lema sabachthani (2005 dir. shinji aoyama)
lux aeterna (2019 dir. gaspar noe)
project wolf hunting (2022 dir. kim hong-sun)
naga (2023 dir. meshal al jaser)

recommend some horror?
aha!! i am glad you asked (no really, i am, thank you for giving me the opportunity to be loud about my favourite genre). here is a non-exhaustive list of some of my personal favourites:
books
-the ballad of black tom by victor lavalle (retelling of lovecraft's "the horror at red hook" by a black author, i could talk about this one for hours suffice to say it's Very Good)
-pet semetary by stephen king (i have a love/hate relationship with mr king but i think this is one of his better books)
-the haunting of hill house by shirley jackson (actually, just about anything by shirley jackson, my personal favourite book by her is "we have always lived in the castle")
-beloved by toni morrison (it's not exactly horror, but i have to put it here anyway because it's too good not to)
-things we say in the dark by kirsty logan
-tell me i’m worthless by alison rumfitt
-house of leaves by mark z. danielewski (i detest this book. yes it's still one of my top favourites and no i will not be taking questions at this time.)
-my heart is a chainsaw by stephen graham jones
-literally anything by robert aickman
movies
-pan’s labyrinth (historical fantasy-horror, visually stunning, one of my favourite movies of all time)
-lake mungo (australian found footage horror about ghosts and grief)
-the texas chain saw massacre (not as gory as the title might suggest)
-the wicker man (the original version, unless you’re in the mood to see nicolas cage at his nicolas cagiest)
-jacob’s ladder (beautiful, eerie, hallucinogenic, you will not know what’s going on for most of it and that’s honestly kind of the point)
-carrie (the sissy spacek version NOT the one with chloe moretz)
-the ritual (it's not a perfect movie but the creature design is WONDERFUL)
-alien (grr! i'm gonna getcha! i'm the alien! and so on)
-nosferatu (both versions are excellent, but i am particularly partial to the 1979 one with klaus kinski as the vampire)
-whistle and i’ll come to you (unsettling short film based on an m. r. james story)
-hereditary (this one's best if you go in blind, but i realise that’s probably difficult since a lot of it has been memed to hell and back)
-the thing (sci-fi thriller/body horror movie set on an isolated arctic research base)
-don't look now (based on a daphne du maurier short story; light on the horror but heavy on the uncanny)
-cabin in the woods (comedy-horror) okay this one is kind of a guilty pleasure for me but it does have some clever moments and it’s genuinely very fun to watch
-silent hill 2006 (another guilty pleasure, it is very much not a good movie but also i've seen it like 7 times, so.)
-ginger snaps (the close relationship between a pair of misfit sisters is tested when one of them starts going through puberty, and also incidentally becomes a werewolf. similar vibes to jennifer's body although i personally prefer this one)
-penda’s fen (startlingly ahead of its time – it’s basically a coming-of-age story about a gay teenager in rural england with a tasty slice of religious/folk horror)
-crimson peak (love letter to the "gothic melodrama" genre)
-us (i personally preferred it to get out, but they’re both amazing; i haven’t seen NOPE yet but i hope to soon!)
tv shows
-castlevania (based on the video game, vampires + religious horror, gorgeously animated, unexpectedly funny)
-the terror (true-ish story of a doomed voyage to the north-west passage) (the demon bear may or may not be historically factual) (we just don't know)
-twin peaks (idk if it counts as horror but i’m putting it here anyway. it’s not for everyone but it occupies a special place in my heart)
-in the flesh (again, not quite horror, but there are horror elements, and i am putting it here because it’s both a pleasingly original take on the zombie-apocalypse genre and a beautiful queer love story. it got cancelled halfway through its run and i will never stop being salty about it.)
-the enfield haunting (three-part tv drama) (much better than the james wan movie) (not that that’s hard)
podcasts
-the magnus archives (do not ask me about this show unless you're prepared to hear me yell about it for Ever and Ever and Ever)
-alice isn't dead (lesbian trucker searches for her missing wife amidst various spooky happenings)
-a scottish podcast (washed-up radio DJ decides to become a phony paranormal investigator to make some extra cash, but his scheme goes awry when he stumbles on a genuine paranormal event)
-i am in eskew (man attempts to leave city, is unsuccessful)
message me if you want trigger warnings or a more detailed description for any of these!

3. Three films you could watch for the rest of your life and not get bored?
So... I haven't actually seen very many movies? I grew up pretty sheltered and never had many friends that were really into movies. But I absolutely loved the LOTR films growing up, and I've rewatched them many times. They're definitely comfort films for me. Another favorite of mine is Werner Herzog's 1979 take on the Dracula story, Nosferatu: Phantom der Nacht. It's this very atmospheric, artistic take. Not as much fast action or dialogue as there is in many modern American films. Also there is some amazing acting. Here's one of my favorite scenes (note the obsessive desire, repression, homoeroticism, violence---some of my favorite flavors):
26. Favorite color and why?
I'm going to be That Guy---I don't have a favorite color. I think it's because colors are so emotional for me. I have an extremely visual autistic brain. I don't even have an inner monologue (voice in my head)---I think almost entirely in images and sounds. And colors convey so much meaning to me, so it's impossible for me to have one single one that I prefer above others because different colors suit different moods. I guess, though, in general, I like very rich colors? Dark red and green, black, silver, warm woody colors, colors that remind me of landscapes or the night sky.
38. Favorite song at the moment?
I really like how almost cinematic this song is? I've been listening to it a lot as I've been listening to music for creative inspiration. I'm a huge fan of atmospheric black metal in general.

ah… now back to business
so i just watched werner herzog’s nosferatu (1979) because someone in the comment section of shadow of the vampire recommended it. HONESTLY better than any dracula adaptation i’ve seen. i also found jonathan harker way more likable in this one, and the actress that plays lucy is extremely pretty. and i like that they did everything old the fashioned way, such as the hundreds of definitely real (cute) rats all over the place. (i have been soured on cgi today because of the many many fake rats i saw in a movie earlier. come on. they’re just RATS.)
overall i found the whole film to be quite creepy. such as the ship captain’s mysterious death… that was haunting. the way the empty boat drifted to pier with him tied to the helm. i liked the atmosphere. lots of effort put into it. and the scene where dracula creeps into the bathroom and you can’t see him in the mirror but you can see his shadow behind lucy…. terrifying. really good movie! recommend. made me think about the nature of love and such… i like when movies make me think. also i liked the twist at the end….
however if you watch it i recommend watching shadow of the vampire first because i think it set up a good background and the necessary understanding to fully appreciate the movie

Tag Nine People You'd Like To Get To Know Better
FAVOURITE COLOUR(s): Dark, rich purples and reds. Greens: British racing, chartreuse. Bottle greens and browns. Black and white contrasts. Glasz eyes are the most beautiful on Earth. Love a check or tartan pattern. I paint all my miniatures in cold blue/bronze or warm purple/brass contrast unless physically prevented from doing so.
FAVOURITE FLAVOUR(s): Rock salt and woodsmoke and paprika in a thin batter. Rich thick curry sauce - warm and textured, not hot-like-burning. Whole milk and sour cream. Fresh carrots and tomatoes - just chomp those fuckers down. Sourdough and soft cheese. Tea with an undertone of citrus or an abundance of honey. Mulled apples. Dirty chai. And above all, peppermint.
FAVOURITE MUSIC: Tradgoth and post punk (basslines you can slink to), trip hop (take me somewhere far away), post rock soundscapes (the more elegiac the better), prog (but more the Pink Floyd pomp rock than wildly experimental stuff), anything Jim Jarmusch or Polly Jean Harvey ever touch, sad country and sleazy swamp rocks. Music for people who want to crawl into a swamp, cop off, and drown each other.
FAVOURITE MOVIE(s): Franklyn. Withnail & I. Only Lovers Left Alive. I detest busy plotting and spectacle and run on vibes. But also, because sometimes I'm From The Nineties And Also British, Guy Ritchie's entire oeuvre. Sin City has a nice vibe even though it's a nasty piece of work. Possession (1981) and Nosferatu (1979) - I'll watch Isabelle Adjani in anything. Or Eva Green. Give me pale, deathless, insane women.
FAVOURITE BOOK(s): UGH! Anything by Terry Pratchett. S T Gibson's vampire stories. Anything by Susanna Clarke. Earthsea. The first four books of Anno Dracula. Anything by Laura Shepherd-Robinson. Alis Hawkins' Oxford novels. Seth Dickenson's Masquerade and Tamsyn Muir's Locked Tomb. The Wolf Hall trilogy. Sherlock Holmes and weird post-Holmes stuff from Obverse. T. S. Eliot, William Blake, Edgar Allen Poe, Sylvia Plath, and a raft of contemporary Welsh poets - Cath Drake, Katherine Stansfield, Christopher Meredith. If I had a guilty pleasure, Black Library novels (John French, Matt Farrer and Aaron Dembksi-Bowden) would be it.
FAVOURITE SERIES(es): Doctor Who, Lock, Stock..., The Biederbeck Trilogy, What We Do In The Shadows, LA By Night, The Thick of It and... Taskmaster. Taskmaster is my religion. I like seeing the Bit all comics do get tested to destruction. And podcasts: Poorhammer, the 40K Badcast. I get my hobby chat fix from those.
LAST SONG: :Of The Wand And The Moon:, 'Hold My Hand'
LAST SERIES: The Thick of It (rewatch).
LAST MOVIE: Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (comfort rewatch, I've been poorly)
CURRENTLY READING: Viriconium by M. John Harrison.
CURRENTLY WATCHING: nothing
CURRENTLY WORKING ON: ideating a festive V5 one-off and new chronicles for next year, but otherwise taking it easy (I've been really poorly)
TAGGED BY: @silkenred
TAGGING: @heywizards @biomechanicaltomato @gwenynen-bach @gingerbeer-queer @robotslenderman
