awkward hq boys first time trying to cheer up their manager
Ushijima, Kageyama, Sakusa || manager!reader
warnings: cursing, slight angst, fluff
notes: Reader is the club’s manager, kinda went overboard with each of them (long reading GLHF), all takes place in the gym, relationships are up for interpretation!!
Tumblr media
your (now ex) boyfriend had broken up with you over text
it was so sudden
and the timing was AWFUL
because you were about to have a little meeting with the team at the gym
Where you always needed to be focused on taking notes for what the team needs
There is no space for distraction. Nationals is soon
Sniffing away snot and wiping tears away from your face, you stand up straight and walk into the gym, a clipboard in your hand
As usual, you were one of the first to arrive
And as usual, the captain of the vb club sits at on the second row of the bleachers changing his shoes
Before you could leave to find some space to recollect yourself, Ushijima calls you over
He probably heard your loud squeaky shoes sliding against the floor when your turned to leave
“[Y/N]-chan,” his voice fills the silent gym.
You clear your throat before sending a big smile. “Hey, Ushijima-san!”
Walking over, you wave at him. “Can I help you with something?”
“I know the meeting hasn’t started yet, but I wanted to ask you to—” he pauses mid-sentence when his eyes found yours.
Your heart rises a little, feeling anxious
Oh no. Did he notice?
“Um,” he starts. “Are you alright?”
fuck, he did.
“Yeah, I’m fine.” You say, nonchalantly. You made sure there is no hint of emotion in your voice, although, in doing so, it almost came off rude.
“Ok, then,” Ushijima says, hesitating. “Well, as I was saying…”
You tried your best to focus
But his question rings in your head over and over again
Are you alright?
It is enough to have you burst into tears once again
Those tears quickly escalate and your shoulders start to shake as you drop, squatting on the floor
You begin to cry quietly into the palm of your free hand, the other clutching the clipboard tightly to your chest
It makes his eyes widen and mouth slightly part in surprise
He jumps over the bleachers and squats down beside you
“I-if that’s too much to ask for, then I apologize. You don’t need to find other managers! I-I’m sorry if that offended you. You’re a great manager. We’re all grateful for all the work that you do for us.” Ushijima scratches his head, unsure if what to say next as you try to muffle cries in your hand.
He gives you a moment to calm yourself, awkwardly patting your shoulder.
He wishes he could think of a way to make you stop crying but other than giving you pats, he’s out of ideas
You shake your head, letting out a small “no”, sniffing a bit
Pulling his hand away, he continues to wait for more from you.
You finally speak up after wiping your face again, but your eyes remain toward the ground
“Sorry, it’s just…My boyfriend just broke up with me. And I guess I’m being too emotional right now. I think your idea is great. I will keep that in mind,” you say, before wiping your eyes w the back of your hand on again, and standing up.
He quickly stands up, mirroring your actions
“Do you want to talk about it?” he asks quietly, eyes still never leaving your puffy ones.
“Um…” you think about it for a second. “No, but thank you though. P-please excuse me for a minute.” You walk to the bathroom to wash your face, leaving Ushijima alone on the bleachers again.
He paces back and forth, thinking what to do
Nothing comes to mind so he texts Tendou
His text: Tendou, [y/n] is crying. What do I do. Please answer ASAP. She’s in the bathroom right now and will return any minute.
Tendou: I’m almost there, just wait.
Ushijima taps his feet impatiently
When you return, he quickly freezes, facing you
The first thing he says: “could you help me gather the balls?”
He thought maybe having a duty will distract you from sad thoughts
During the meeting, he would steal glances at you, checking on you
For the rest of the day, he would do the same thing: ask you to do a favor
But never alone, he would join you in completing task
And make conversation while he’s at it
“Did you know that in 1996, beach volleyball became a part of the Olympics? Really cool.”
And by conversation, mostly him teaching you volleyball stuff
Sometimes would say stuff you already know like: “Can you believe no high school in our district can compete with us, so we have to compete against colleges or schools outside the Miyagi Prefecture?” he’d say while helping you mop up the gym floor
Even though it wasn’t his duty to mop today
But his absurd questions would literally make you start laughing
Like, why is he telling me all this stuff that I already know??
Sadness no longer lingers in your eyes
It makes Ushijima chuckle, proud to see you smile again
He knows what he’s saying is nonsense but if it gets you to smile again, he’ll keep doing it
Tumblr media
You stare at the grade you’ve got: 54 out of 100
Chemistry was not an easy class
You really tried but you probably just needed to study more
What made you extremely upset was the fact that you have As in every other class except this one
You just have to do better
but you always tell yourself this which makes you frustrated
It leaves your heart feeling heavy
You walk into the gym with heavy footsteps, shoulders drooped down
The sound of a ball bouncing against hardwood can be heard
You look up and see the familiar tall figure
Kageyama Tobio
He’s practicing his serves by himself, throwing a number of volleyballs over the net
He notices you and gives a slight nod, holding one volleyball to his chest
You send a smile and wave
He grunts before continuing his practice
You look back at your phone and scroll through your test answers provided by the teacher
When you notice a lot of minor mistake you made, you groaned
Really? I’m so stupid! OMG, you internally complain, giving yourself a facepalm
Being the perfectionist, this made you frustrated
To the point where you had to click your phone off, placing your head in your hands as you sat on the bench
Some tears threaten to escape
With your face hidden in your hands, you hear the sound of bouncing balls stop
Footsteps slowly approach you
and you hear a familiar deep voice:
“[Y/N], did Hitoka-chan and Kiyoko-san not come with you?” the setter asks, flipping the ball in his hand.
“Uhh, no,” you say, your voice croaking a bit. Your face doesn’t leave from your hands and it makes Kageyama concerned
“Uh, are you okay?” Kageyama asks, his eyebrow raised and confused by your current state
“I’m fine,” you answer. But when you start sniffing, he realizes that you were crying
He pauses, not knowing what to do.
After a minute of silence, you feel a presence sit next to you
A cough makes you jump a little
“Oh, s-sorry,” Kageyama mutters, looking over at your hunched figure.
“No, your good,” you say, quietly.
You clear your throat, filling the awkward silence that follows your words.
“Actually, I failed my Chem test. So…I guess, that’s why I’m feeling a bit down.”
“Huh,” he starts. “Do you like Chem?”
“Well, no.”
“Then, why take it?”
“Because, all the top students who took Biology took Chem the next year. I guess I wanted to fit in.”
When did this turn into a therapy session
“That’s interesting, considering the fact that you joined this club for the opposite reason, if i remember correctly?”
It’s true. None of your class friends were associated with the schools vb club, they weren’t interested in the “jock” stuff and only focused on academics
you, on the other hand, had some interest in volleyball and joined on a whim
that’s where you met the best people in your life, your best friends
“Yeah…” you respond. It leaves you thinking about certain things.
Kageyama huffs, getting up.
“Can you help me with some sets, before the others arrive?” He changes the subject, hoping to clear your mind.
“Sure.” You nod, getting up and wiping tears from your face.
“Oh, wait.” Kageyama rushes to his bag and pulls out some tissues. “Here.”
Your cheeks turn pink from embarrassment. “Thank you.”
“N-no problem,” he replies awkwardly.
And with that, you begin tossing the balls for him
He would usually ask Hinata to do this and would always complain at how Hinata’s throwing them
But he didn’t complain once with you
Even when you’d throw the ball under the net
You’d apologize and he’d wave his hand off, saying that it’s okay.
He probably assumed that you were having fun bc anything volleyball = fun
and honestly, it was a little fun
fun and satisfying to see how much Kageyama’s improved
And it got you to smile here and there
He silently celebrates when he finally sees you smile
That’s when other club members finally hop into the room
And you quickly turn into your usual “manager mode”, getting to work
Thanks to Kageyama, you feel more at ease
Tumblr media
It just happens to be one of those days
You had a lot on your plate
So much that you felt no motivation to complete your responsibilities
But the day must go on
After a long round of volleyball practice after school, it was finally time for a break
Everyone walks out of the gym to grab a small snack from the vending machine or converse with friends
Sakusa, on the other hand, remains on the court alone, doing some serves
Which leaves you two left in the gym
But no one seemed to notice as you both went along with your businesses
Feeling exhausted both physically and emotionally, you sit on the bleachers, leaning your back as you face at the walls, with a faraway look on your face
Thinking Sakusa wouldn’t notice your unusually apathetic state, since he’s always hyper-focused during practice, it surprises you when he walks over to you, concern filling his eyes
“You, ok?” Sakusa places a hand into his jacket pocket, the other hand was attached to a volleyball that was held against his hip
The voice startles you for a second, and reality hits you
“I don’t really know,” you say truthfully, sighing.
Sakusa hums, thinking
He slips off his jacket and places it neatly folded into his duffel.
“Be right back,” he mutters loud enough for you to hear, before walking away
You raise an eyebrow watching his back as he walks out the door
Ok then…
You weren’t very surprised by his odd behavior because that’s just how he is
After a couple minutes and few echoes of laughter from outside, he returns with a bottle of water, most likely from the vending machine
“Here.”
You look at the bottle and then back up at him. “Oh, need me to open it?” You take it, before he could answer, finding it easy to pop the lid.
“No, its yours.” He places his hands into his pockets as he takes a seat next to you. “I have my own right here.”
“Oh.” You look down at the bottle. “Thank you, Sakusa-kun.”
You take a huge gulp.
“If you were that thirsty, you should’ve brought your own jug,” he says bluntly.
“You’ve got a point.” He’s got a point.
He pauses for a sec. “Anyway, are you feeling a little better?” His eyes drift over to you.
In a way, his actions are really thoughtful
Simply just handing you something to drink, even though he doesn’t know the reason why you’re feeling down
He was never one to be good at consoling a friend with their words
But little acts of care like these
“Well, definitely not thirsty anymore if that’s what you’re asking,” you say, chuckling.
“Hmm, I guess that is an improvement,” he smirks.
He feels a bit more at ease seeing your face light up.
Ooh, this is a new side of Sakusa. It’s interesting to see.
The fact that he stopped his practice, the hard-working Sakusa, just to give you some company was a shock.
If there’s one thing that everyone knows about Sakusa is that he hates being interrupted during practice
Once he starts something, he intends to complete the task, even if it’s time for a break
Yet, here he is, relaxing on the bleachers with you, chatting abt mundane things
I could use a break, anyway, is what he thinks in his head when he starts to relax.
In truth, he doesn’t mind having a chat with you
And seeing his manager/friend in low spirits puts a bad feeling in his stomach
Being the competitive, determined person he is, Sakusa will make sure that your mood is increased by at least 70% before the day is over.

daichi sawamura- summer
the warm midday sun shone on your face. you closed your eyes and leaned your head back and your hair cascaded over your exposed shoulders and down your back tickling your skin. a warm breeze enveloped your skin and you smiled to yourself, enjoying this last summer day. your phone buzzes in your pocket, be there soon, beautiful. practice ran late. your boyfriend, daichi sawamura, was usually pretty punctual but this was the last morning practice of the summer. you could just imagine hinata and kageyama begging for five, ten, fifteen more minutes. you were impressed with their devotion and the team’s stamina.
you sat crosslegged on the low stone wall. you leaned back to soak up the sun. on the wind you could smell the scent of street food wafting toward you. you and daichi decided it might be fun to go to the outdoor market and then have a picnic in the park. you tilted your head to each side stretching your neck and leaning your hands back on the wall. you were so happy to have a relaxing summer day before the chaos of the fall begins. “hello there, beautiful.” you hear daichi’s warm voice ring out as he approaches you, sugawara and asahi in tow. “hey handsome!” he jogs up to you and you lean forward to give him a kiss. he brushes your wind-tousled hair away from your face and his hand drops to your waist to pull you forward. you giggle as he smiles against your lips. “you guys are so cute.” you hear suga say and you pull away to smile at your friends. daichi sighs, hating that the kiss ended so quickly, and pulls back.
daichi offers a hand to help you from the wall. “aw, thanks, suga!” daichi continues to hold your hand, “are you guys coming along with us?” you look between suga and asahi as daichi drapes his arm over your shoulders and kisses your temple. “ah, not this time,” asahi says looking away with a faint blush, “wouldn’t wanna impose..” sugawara laughs, “besides we’re just here to grab some things for tonight.” you look at daichi and then back to sugawara, “tonight? what’s tonight?” sugawara narrows his eyes at daichi, “you didn’t tell her?” daichi sighs, “ukai rented this place out for us tonight for an end of summer party.” he looks down and then up at you, “would you be interested in going?” you wrap your arm around his waist and smile, “sure! sounds fun!” sugawara smiles at you both, “see. i told you she’d want to come.” daichi chuckles, “i’m sorry i didn’t ask you before, but there won’t be many other girls there and i didn’t want you to feel uncomfortable.” you gave him a squeeze, “i got you.. is kiyoko going?” daichi nodded, “i think so, yachi too.” you look to the other guys, “are you guys going?” asahi and suga both nod, “then it should be fun!” daichi beams and gives you another kiss on the head. sugawara gives asahi’s shirt a tug and starts to walk off, “well, you kids enjoy your date and we will see you tonight!” you and daichi wave as asahi and sugawara walk toward the market. “see ya tonight!” he calls after them.
you turn to face daichi and he smiles sheepishly, “alright, what’s the real reason you didn’t ask me?” daichi laughs, “you just can’t be fooled can you,” he looks down at his feet before taking a big breath and saying, “it’s a dance party.” you cross your arms, “ok. and..?” he leans against the wall and pulls you closer to him to stand between his legs, “… and do you know how jealous i would be if you were the only girl there to dance with the whole team?” you laugh and place a hand on his chest, “daichi, come on, you know you’re the only one i wanna dance with and not one of those boys would be interested in dancing with me anyway,” he rolls his eyes, “now you know that’s not true,” he takes your hand and spins you around, “just look at you!” he pulls you close by the loops of your jean shorts and kisses your lips. he curls his middle finger through the loops on your hips and squeezes your hips between his palms, digging his fingertips into you. “daichi..” you say softly and turn your head to look around, he drops his head and chuckles, “sorry,” he says turning to look in the opposite direction, “what can i say, angel,” he looks up at you, “you carry me away.” you kiss his his forehead and then pull him up from the stone wall he was leaning against. “lead the way, i’m going to text the girls and see what we’re wearing,” daichi grabs your other hand and leads you toward the market as you type to the group chat:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
perfect. you think as you piece the outfit together in your mind. daichi looks back at you, “uh oh…” he gives your hand a little squeeze, “whenever you get that look, it usually means i’m in trouble.” he raises an eyebrow. “i don’t know what you mean,” you say innocently. he laughs heartily and nudges you with his shoulder, “riiiight.”
you two walked through the market and gathered up some fruit, veggies, street snacks, and pastries for a picnic. you walked up to a flower stall and sniffed some huge blossoms. “aren’t these pretty, daichi?” he looked you over and his eyes lingered on your face, “beautiful.” he said softly, watching you with admiration. “we’ll take a bouquet, please.” he said to the stall keeper and gestured toward the flowers you were smelling. “aw, daichi, you don’t have to..” he waved his hand, “it’s my pleasure.” the shopkeeper wrapped a bouquet of big orange and red blooms into some newspaper, arranging them with other flowers and greenery, and tied it with twine. daichi paid for them and then handed them to you, “beautiful flowers for my beautiful girl.” he always knew exactly what to do and say to make you smile. “thank you, daichi.” he intertwined his fingers with yours, “of course.”
you two walk together with your haul of treats to the park and spread out a blanket near a tree. you set up the meal and take turns trying each others food and feeding each other. by the end of the meal you end up sprawling out next to each other on the blanket picking out shapes in the clouds, “i swear, (y/n), it looks like an elephant,” daichi points at a big fluffy cloud over head, “ok.. more like an animal cracker version of an elephant but an elephant nonetheless.” you giggle and roll on to your side. you prop yourself up on your elbow and take one of the blooms from your bouquet that loosed itself to trace the curves of daichi’s face. he smiles and closes his eyes, tilting his face toward the sun and allowing his hand to absentmindedly mimic your patterns with his fingertips against your thigh.
you watched as the petals delicately brushed his face. his high cheekbones, the delicate slope of his nose, the short, straight lines of his jaw; the soft and slightly tanned skin, his full pink lips.. daichi was sort of beautiful. he wasn’t an imposing beauty like a statue or a demigod, but he was beautiful in a homey sort of way. daichi was the physical embodiment of a feeling. he was honey in your tea, being taken care of when you’re sick, a homemade meal, the feeling of falling into bed after a long day, walking into an air-conditioned room when it’s sweltering outside, drinking ice cold water after working out, hot water on cold skin. daichi was stable, nurturing, and… good. he was the closest thing to pure good you’d ever known in this world. you were lucky to know him, let alone have the pleasure of loving him.
he opened his eyes and looked at you for a long moment, “i can’t tell you how many times i wished this day would last forever,” he rolled on his side and propped himself up on his arm and scooted so that he was nose to nose with you, “but then i remember there are so many days ahead of us, new things, days like today, and better, or worse, but i get them all, and i get them all with you.” he kissed the tip of your nose and played with the frayed cuffs of your jean shorts, “well, i must be the luckiest guy in the world.” he leans over and playfully pushes you back so that he’s hovering over you. there could be a million people staring at you in that park, but you wouldn’t notice. the whole world that existed in that moment lived in the 5 centimeters between your lips.
after some playful kisses, you cleaned up your mess and started the trek home. the sun was hanging low in the sky and you could hear the cicadas sing. every day was a good day with daichi, but this day made you feel so soft and warm. you were reminded of the simple joy of being in love and you felt full and content. you found yourself getting more and more excited for the party. and a dance party no less. the more the sun sank heavy in the sky and the day faded into a hot summer night, the closer you were to being able to let loose and get a little wild with the man of your dreams.
you and daichi were seen as the responsible, mom and dad type couple in your friend group. the team would be more likely to ask you to help with homework or build a budget before asking you to party. it was probably better that the kids didn’t know what went on behind closed doors. they all look up to daichi and see him as the reserved and respectable face of kurasano, but you knew a different side to him; a side you were looking forward to partying with tonight. it was the last night of summer, it was a night the entire team agreed to just let loose and have fun.
you rounded the corner of your street and daichi walked you to your door. “so i’ll be back here in a little while to pick you up, okay?” you nodded and daichi leaned in for a kiss. you playfully pulled away and leaned against the wall with a come-hither grin. daichi bit his lip and placed a hand against the wall just beside your head. he put his other hand on the side of your face and pushed your face gently to the side to expose your neck. he hovered a moment, just over your skin and you could hear him laugh softly before planting the lightest teasing kisses up your neck as he curled his fingers into your hair at the nape of your neck. he slowly pulled back and nibbled at his bottom lip with narrowed eyes, “i look forward to seeing what you’ll be wearing tonight.” his dark eyes had a glint of mischief in them. “i look forward to dancing with you tonight.” you said as you ran your hands from his chest to his hips and pulled him forward against you, “i’m sure it will be a lot of fun,” he said with a strained air of composure. he pressed his lips against yours; gently at first and then firmly before pulling away. “better go get ready or we’ll never leave,” you both laugh and share a few more kisses, “alright, alright,” you say fiddling with your house key, “see you in a bit, handsome.” he smiles and waits at the gate for you to unlock your door, “lookin’ forward to it, beautiful.” you wave at each other and watch as he walks up the lane to his house.
you dash inside to start your ritual. there is so much you need to get done before you go! you pop the flowers in some water and run to your bedroom. you pull the cute two-piece from your closet and hang it up next to your mirror, shoesssss.., you dig around in your closet and find some cute, strappy heels. the two piece set is made of a lovely silk blend. its a soft material that fades from a peachy orange to a bright red like a tropical sunset. the back of the top piece criss-crosses across your back with gold chains that highlight your strong shoulders and waist. the skirt is made of a matching material that is very short with a split up the side held together with criss-crossed chains. you pull out your makeup and other self-care supplies.
in the group chat, kiyoko and yachi are also going through their pre-party routine; discussing the virtues of flats versus heels, matte versus gloss, and how the heck yachi is going to get tadashi’s attention! you slap your phone on the charger and turn on some music. you shower, shave, brush teeth, and put on a face mask. you try to relax as you rub illuminating moisturizer on your legs. after your face mask, you pop on your makeup- brows, perfect eyeliner, highlighter, red lips, coral blush, even a lash. you look at your hair and opt for your natural texture. you flip your hair over to shake some volume in and part it on the side. you slide on your heels and before heading out you snip one of the big blooms and tuck it behind your ear. you look in the mirror and smile, i hope daichi likes it. and right on cue you hear him knock on the door.
you open the door and he turns to see you just as you open the door and meet his eyes. his eyes illuminate and his lips widen into a bright smile, “hello gorgeous,” he says as he steps toward you to give you a careful kiss, mindful not to ruin your makeup, “you look amazing,” he says as he holds out your arms to get a better look at you. you blush as his eyes hungrily take you in. “holy shit, girl!” you hear tanaka’s loud voice from the gate, “no freakin way that’s (y/n)!!!” nishinoya exclaims. “you look gooooooooood, for real, for real! daichi-man you been holdin out on us, captain??!!” tanaka whistles. you giggle as you can see daichi’s blood pressure raise. “it’s me!” you say and then give a little twirl, “you guys aren’t the only ones to clean up nice,” you wink and look at daichi who seems to be forever in awe of you when you interact with the rest of the team. he offers you his arm, “ready, gorgeous?” you take his arm and you all head out.
you meet up with a few others that live in the neighborhood and you all laugh and goof off all the way to the venue. it’s one of those moments that feels more like a movie than real life. you are so happy and your heart is so full. for a moment you lose yourself to the energy of the night when daichi stops you. the others walk on and he wraps you in his arms, “you are truly the most beautiful person i’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing, and i mean that. inside and out.” he pulls away to look you over once more and there in the heat of the night, music blaring in the distance, in this quiet moment, you feel it must be true.
kuroo tetsurō - winter
“good morning, sleepyhead,” you heard your boyfriend’s raspy voice as you opened your eyes. you looked toward the window and saw the sky was still very dark. you groaned softly and pulled a pillow over your face. tetsurou laughed and rolled over onto his side, propping himself up and pulling the pillow away from your face. he slipped his long fingers under his shirt you were wearing and stroked your waist, “c’mon, precious, it won’t be any easier if you continue to lay here.” his head lulled to the side to make sure he was making eye contact with you. his hazel eyes bright and alert. you smiled up at him and wrapped your arm around his waist and grabbed the pillow he pulled off your face and sweetly, sleepily said, “no.” you smashed the pillow against his face and buried your face into the one below underneath you. “alright,” he said through his smug smile. he tossed the pillow you smashed in his face onto the floor and straddled your waist, “if we don’t get up, we’ll miss it.” you looked up at the ever agile tetsu as he leaned his hands on the headboard. your eyes trailed from his low hanging pj pants, up his abdomen, his chest, his sly smile, and finally his eyes. you smiled and pulled him down on top of you, “weighted blanket. can’t go. too comfy.” you felt him laugh against you as you wrapped your arms tighter around his neck, pulling his torso against yours. “baby,” he began seriously, “who knows when we’ll get this chance again.” you loosened your hands so you could look at his face. tetsu looked at you with eyes yearning and burning into your own, “fine,” you whispered with a pout. tetsu rolled back onto his knees and offered his arm to help you up. you wrap your arms around his arm and hang for a moment with a little whine. he laughs, “what a sleepy girl,” he purrs, “i promise it will be worth it. now let’s get dressed and go get coffee!” he stands up and pulls you up to your feet. “…coffee?” you say after a pause looking up at him with hopeful eyes, “yes,” he says while patting the top of your head, “your morning dose of trimethylxanthine, my pet.” you giggle mischievously and bound toward the closet. he shakes his head and watches you pounce around getting dressed.
this morning was special because it was a solar eclipse. tetsu had planned on going to watch it with you since he heard there would be one. he always tried to watch heavenly phenomenon and since you started dating, he always wanted to watch them with you. he would excitedly talk about how it was his “once in a lifetime moment” with his “once in a lifetime girl” and how he “may never get another chance.” he would talk excitedly about how each eclipse was an opportunity to feel the weight of being and to take a moment to appreciate the incredible mysteries of being suspended on a rock in a far corner of a vast universe and that our significance on a universal, global, even national scale was insignificant, but within the minutia, the significance of our being in the moment we become aware, was as close to infinity as we will ever get. tetsu liked to be reminded of his mortality and the balance of his own existence; physically and metaphysically. you were always so impressed by how much he knows and he continues to learn all the time. you are continually inspired by the depth of his gratitude; although it is buried under a surface level of nihilism.
“hey babe,” you called from the bathroom curling your hair, “what’s the weather going to be today?” tetsu rounded the corner into the bathroom while reading his phone, “looks like it might snow later, so, bundle up and don’t forget to pack a jacket.” he plants a kiss on your shoulder and studies you in the mirror, “i don’t want you to get sick.” he walked back into the bedroom and pulled out your bags. that’s right, you thought, today isn’t just a quick trip to watch the solar eclipse. after you both get coffee and watch the solar eclipse, you were headed into the city to stay for the weekend. kuroo’s friend, tsukki and his girlfriend, had invited you both to a winter soiree at the planetarium that night. it was supposed to be a celebration of the new planetarium building and it’s new design features and exhibits. you both were looking forward to this since they invited you.
you shook out your curls and made your way over to the closet. tetsurō was carefully folding his clothes in his suitcase and checking off the list on his phone; tetsurō is calculated and organized. he looks up from his list and asks, “what color is your dress for tonight? i want to make sure my suit matches.” you grab the garment bag from your closet. you have been keeping this dress a surprise since you ordered it and the suspense was killing him. you hadn’t given him any details, as to not ruin it, but he always tried to work around the surprise. he hadn’t been successful until now, “dark blue,” you say with a sigh and he smiled blithely, “good to know,” he nods and thumbs through his suits. he pulls two- a soft cornflower blue day suit and a dark sapphire blue evening suit the exact color of your dress, “which of these is closer?” he tries to muster an innocent smile, “don’t look at me like that, i’m just trying to make sure i compliment you.” his smirk says otherwise. you roll your eyes and say, “the dark blue,” he hangs the light blue suit up, “you finally got a hint.” he nods, “yes, but i won’t be satisfied until i can see you in it.” he zips the dark blue suit into a garment bag with his undershirt, belt, and a small bag with cuff links, watch, and tie clip. tetsurō secretly loves to get dressed up, especially if he can do it with you.
you packed your bits and bobs and started to get dressed for the day. you stood in your underclothes in front of your closet and shifted back and forth, holding up a few sweaters. you turned to see tetsurō who stopped midway putting on his sweater to admire you. you blushed softly, “what?” you asked and he chuckled, pulling his soft black sweater over his head, “nothing,” he walks over to you and looks in the full length mirror, “i just like observing you,” he kisses the top of your head, “the white sweater is my favorite of the two,” he walks nonchalantly toward the bathroom, continuing packing his list. you hold up the white sweater again and look in the mirror. you decide to go with it. you pull on the form fitting white sweater, some high-waisted tight black trousers, and some tall black riding boots. you slip in some dainty earrings and go to put on your necklace. it was a necklace tetsurō gave you for your birthday. it was a silver pendant with a diamond that looked like the north star. you remember him giving it to you and when you asked why the north star he said, “because when i am with you i never worry about feeling lost; you always lead me home.” he was always very thoughtful in his gifts and gestures. he never put unnecessary weight or emphasis on things. everything he does is intentional and purposeful; for someone who sometimes feels as though nothing matters in the vast expanse of time and space, he sure added a lot of sentiment and meaning to life. that’s one of the many things you love about him.
you fiddled with your necklace while being lost in thought when you feel his hands gently stroke your hair to the side and take the clasp from your fingers. he quickly and deftly latches the necklace and kisses the top of your head. tetsurō gives your shoulders a squeeze and walks back over to the suitcase to pack his toiletries. you spritz your perfume and also pack your toiletry bag, “almost ready, my love?” tetsurō calls from the bathroom. “yeah! just need to throw my toothbrush in my bag and we’re good.” you gather your last bits and slip on your long, oversized gray peacoat and grab your big fluffy scarf. “i can’t believe you still have that thing,” he gestures to the scarf. you look down at the wide and well-worn nekoma scarf. you had it made back in the day, when you both were in high school. it was a blanket scarf that was dark red and had tetsurō's name and jersey number on it, “well, it’s still my favorite.” this still made him smile; after all this time, you held onto it. every year he razzes you for keeping it and every year you tell him it’s still your favorite. he walked up to you and wrapped it around you and pulled you in for a kiss, “glad to know i’m still your favorite.” he kisses your nose and playfully wraps the scarf around your head. you paw him away and fix your scarf with a huff. he laughs and pats his pockets making sure he had everything.
you put your bags in the car and head out. it was still dark out and very cold. you make your way to a cafe and you are thankful for the blast of warm air as you walk in. the girls behind the counter gawk at tetsu who is walking behind you and rubbing the tops of your arms to warm you up. you step in line and you each study the menu before stepping up to the register, “cafe au lait for me and—,” he looks down at you prompting you to place your order, “a peppermint mocha, please,” you say. after paying up you stand by the pick up window and wait for your drinks. tetsurō drapes an arm over your shoulders while scrolling through his phone. “we should arrive at the hill in prime time to see the eclipse,” he was visibly buzzing with excitement. whenever he experienced any wave of positive emotion he reached for you. you think he did this in hopes to boost your mood through osmosis.
your drinks arrived and tetsurō gathered them for you. he made sure your lid was on tight and handed it to you, “careful it’s extra hot.” you took it in both of your hands. tetsurō grabbed some extra napkins and tucked them in his pockets and went through his ritual of patting his pockets making sure everything was in order. he turned to you and adjusted your scarf for you, “ready, precious?” you nodded sipping your very hot peppermint mocha. the girls still swooning nearly caused themselves a pulmonary embolism as he opened the door for you. to be fair, you guys are pretty cute..
with an extra spring in his step, tetsu led the way to the hill where you’d watch the solar eclipse. it was in a park near the water and was perfect for this occasion. he looked up at the sky and his hazel eyes seemed to threaten the clotted clouds in the sky. they kept their distance as you made the trek to the apex of the hill. you both manage to find an empty bench. the park seemed to be more full than tetsurō anticipated. this was bittersweet as he had hoped to have a solitary, intimate moment with you, however, he was very excited that others were interested in this event. you cozied into his side and sipped on your mocha. he draped an arm across the back of the bench and you enjoyed the sunrise. the solar eclipse would be happening just shortly after. “this is pretty special because a total solar eclipse only happens every couple years.” tetsurō swirled his cup of coffee, “the longest solar eclipse can occur for almost 8 minutes. i wonder what the universe will give us today.” he stared out at the horizon as you studied his face. his sharp, defined jaw; his upturned nose, his fierce eyes, the slight depression of his dimple likely formed from his near constant smirk. the wind ruffled his messy bedhead that always seemed to be perfect, no matter how he complained about and fought with it.
the sun made its way over the horizon and just as it ignited the sky it began to disappear before your very eyes. the sun became completely consumed, “‘totality occurs when the moon completely obscures sun so only the solar corona is showing,’” tetsurō said with a holy reverence, his eyes glued to the sky and taking everything in. this was his sacred place; his church. you felt honored that he would want to share this with you. you slipped your hand into his and intertwined your fingers. he tightened his hand around yours and he was on the edge of his seat, he was so happy- this made you happy. after a few minutes, you watched the sun reveal itself. tetsurō watched with the adoration of a groom unveiling his bride. he pulled his eyes away just as the sun came back to light and illuminated your face, “thank you so much for sharing this with me, precious,” he leaned his head against the top of yours and loosed your hand to wrap you in an embrace. you began to understand, over the years the more he shared with you the more you would come to know. moments like this were so special and you would treasure them always.
after watching the sunrise, you and tetsurō made your road trip to the city, stopped for some food, and checked into your hotel. you spend some time in the room compiling lists of landmarks and shops you want to go in while you are visiting. the list consists of bookshops, the natural history museum, and a bar that has a rotating rooftop area with a skylit cieling. it was nice to get away for a few days and have some time to go exploring together and see what you can find. you both lounge in bed and eat some ice lollies you picked up from the convenience store. it might be snowing outside but that was a delicious moment of sadism you both loved to indulge in. it was an act of rebellion, a decadent protest to not be anchored to the proprietary demands of the seasons; tetsurō reveled in the idea of contributing to chaos and throwing of the supposed algorithm of fate. you just wanted to eat ice lollies and listen to him talk about physics. it was a win-win.
time passed and it was approaching time for the event. you grabbed your makeup bag and your garment bag and headed to the bathroom, “no peeking.” you said with a sharp look toward tetsu; who threw up his hands with a laugh, “wouldn’t dream of it, precious.” you locked the door just in case. you unzipped the bag to reveal the dress. it was a floor length sapphire blue silk dress with two slits over each leg that started at the hip. it had an overlay of a darker blue with star and moon embellishments made of swarovski crystals. the dress was cut low into a deep v-neck that nearly showed your belly button. the sleeves were off the shoulder and long to point to a v with loops that went over your middle fingers on each hand like a renaissance painting. you also had a silver and sapphire body chain that highlighted your breast and torso to wear under the dress as well as matching garters that clipped with embellished silver moon hosiery clips. your shoes were a sapphire velvet with a heel. you wore your hair in a low bun with loose curls that framed your face. you tucked pins in your hair with matching crystal stars. your makeup was fairly simple with a lovely pale wine lip, big soft lashes, and lots of glittery shimmer over your shoulders, chest, and cheekbones. you finished getting ready and put your long coat on to cover your dress. you wanted your big reveal to be at the planetarium. you walked out in your coat and scarf with a mischievous grin. “oh, come on, that’s just ridiculous.” tetsurō grimaced. he looked sharp in his fitted dark blue suit. “this is all part of my grand plan, tetsu, trust me.” he rolled his eyes with a smirk, “if you insist.” he kissed your forehead and you left for the planetarium.
when you got there you were welcomed by tsukki and his girlfriend, “thanks for coming,” he said as he greeted you and tetsurō, “of course, thanks for inviting us.” you walk in and wait for the coat check. tsukki and tetsurō were catching up as you and tsukki’s girlfriend chatted and waited together. “look kuroo,” tsukki pointed into the next room, “is that..?” they waved at another acquaintance. “tetsurō, give me your coat and go say hello, we’ll catch up in a sec.” he handed you his coat with a kiss and slipped away to go say hello. perfect, you thought. this would give you an opportunity for a grand reveal. tsukki’s girlfriend turned in her coat and walked away to catch up with the boys; per your request. you slipped off your coat and readied yourself for his reaction. the main exhibit area had an interactive ceiling that reflected the night’s sky giving a detailed look at star and planetary placement. the room was illuminated in a wash of blue light and you entered the room.
at that moment, tetsurō turned to see you enter. his jaw fell slack and his eyes sparkled. you walked up to him, “like it?” he gave you a twirl, “very much,” he pulled you in close to him looking you over and taking in every detail, “worth the wait?” you asked in a whisper. he nodded, speechless as he ran his finger beneath the chain of your jewelry on your chest, “you are absolutely stunning.” tetsu takes your hand and gives you another spin. he drapes an arm delicately across the small of your back leading you around the exhibit.
he is oddly quiet and you catch him staring at you for a long moment, “what is it?” you tilt your head and wait as he searches for the words. you both walk to a quiet corner as the main exhibit begins its premier, illuminating the ceiling. “i finally understand the depth of what carl sagan was saying, ‘the nitrogen in our dna, the calcium in our teeth, the iron in our blood, the carbon in our apple pies were made in the interiors of collapsing stars.’ it’s about so much more than our actual biology. there is a radiance of epic proportions that emanates from your soul,” he looks down at you and strokes your cheek, “‘the cosmos is within us. we are made of star-stuff. we are a way for the universe to know itself,’ and i am so fortunate that out of all the possibilities, of all the probabilities in this life, i found you and i get to keep you. this small infinity between us; full of potential. i have found my once in a lifetime girl and the once in a lifetime opportunity to make you infinitely happy.” you squeezed his hand as you shared a soft, tender kiss. a once in a lifetime man with his once in a lifetime girl; a cosmic, supernatural phenomenon all your own in your little shared infinity between two finite beings.
nature is beautiful.
ushijima wakatoshi- fall
“what do you mean you’ve never seen ‘blair witch’?” you turn to look at your boyfriend, ushijima wakatoshi, who is staring back at you with wide eyes, “pumpkin, you know i haven’t seen most movies, let alone most horror movies.” your mouth pops open in awe, “but it’s a classic.” he shrugs and goes back to filling the bowls with candy for trick-or-treaters. wakatoshi didn’t really have the opportunity to participate in most holidays like the average person because of his insane schedule, however, this halloween was on a saturday and he was dating you, the scream queen herself. you sat cross-legged in front of your dvd collection, your horror collection spread out in front of you. your apartment was decorated magnificently with tons of old school and DIY decorations you convinced ushijima to do with you. your marshmallow candles flickered and filled the room with the scent of s’mores and you looked over the coffee table set up with small pumpkins and carving supplies. it was a perfect halloween- spooky clouds, chilly breeze, and a whole day free with wakatoshi in your matching pajamas.
he plopped down on the couch with one of the candy bowls. you popped in the dvd and scrambled up beside him with a chunky knit blanket. “i think you’re really going to like it, toshi. this will get us in the mood for tonight for sure!” wakatoshi kept an eye on the tv while cutting the tops off your pumpkins. he handed you a spoon and you both dug in to start getting the seeds and guts out. “how are you going to decorate yours, toshi?” he looked for a long moment studying the surface of his pumpkin. you imagined this is the exact face michelangelo made looking up at the ceiling of the sistine chapel. he looked sideways at you, “it’s a surprise.” you chuckled and shook your head. he held his pumpkin and turned it over in his hands. he leaned into the couch and stretched his long legs out in front of him crossing his feet at the ankles. you smiled seeing he was wearing the fall pun socks you got for him, “i’m so corny” with little ears of corn all over them. you never thought of wakatoshi to be the type to enjoy goofy, simple things but he ate it up. he loved your silly puns, your makeshift decorations, and your spirit. anything that made you smile, he was down to try.
you paused your pumpkin carving to sip on the hot apple cider you both made. it was the first time either of you had made cider and it was an event. the easy part was wandering around the market, picking out the apples and spices, and walking home through the leaf ladened park. making the cider was a lot more difficult than you thought and you sort of regretted promising jugs of apple cider to your friends. however, the vision of wakatoshi using the cider press would linger deliciously in your mind for days to come. as you sipped your cider, you recalled his serious brow furrowing as he strained against the old-school press, open flannel shirt, and windblown hair; absolutely worth every bit of frustration. the memory made the flavor more decadent. “how is it?” he asked. “delightful,” you said with a soft smile.
you picked up your pumpkin once more. you had chosen a classic smiling jack-o-lantern face for your pumpkin. it was befitting the rest of your home’s motif. you peeked over at his and smiled seeing the silhouette of his favorite childhood character with it’s round body and puffy gloves. he was concentrating while also trying to pay attention to the movie. he would occasionally blow his hair out of his eyes and wipe his brow with the back of his hand; it was like you were kids again.
your phone buzzed next to you, it was from tendou.
“you excited for tonight?” you smiled
“absolutely! what are you going as?”
“i think i’m going to be pennywise! what about you and ushi?”
you tapped your finger against your chin before sending your message.
“it’s a surprise ;)”
you could feel his frustration through the phone.
“who’s that?” wakatoshi said as he nodded his head towards your phone. “tendou. he wants to know what our costumes are tonight.” ushijima sat up straight and looked at you very seriously, “you didn’t tell him did you?!” he exclaimed. you laughed softly, “no, no, i told him it was a surprise.” he relaxed, “excellent; i want them all to be surprised.” he smirked as he continued to whittle his pumpkin.
you and wakatoshi had planned an epic couples costume that was sure to shock everyone. the two of you were so wholesome and reserved that you really wanted to blow everyone’s socks off. you looked over your shoulder and admired your carefully curated costumes. you smiled to yourself knowing that everyone was probably expecting you to show up as something cutesy and sweet, but these costumes… THESE costumes… surprising.
after watching a few films, finishing your pumpkins, and eating your weight in pizza and candy; it was time to get dressed. wakatoshi eyed the skimpy material skeptically, “c’mon, toshi, it will be amazing! trust me!” you scamper off with your costume and get ready. you do your hair and your makeup following a tutorial entitled “victoria’s secret bombshell glow”. you felt like a glowing bombshell for sure. you fixed your top hat to your big curls and wrestled with the glitter and eyelashes and squeezed into the tiny gold spandex shorts and finally turned around… you started at your feet and the glittering, sky high booties, up to your fishnets, tiny gold shorts, exposed abs, the gold and black lingerie push up bra, little red silk jacket with black lapels and gold ornate designs, big bouncy curls and top hat with gold band and veil… you felt hooooot.
wakatoshi knocked on the door, “i think i need a little help, (y/n).” he opened the door and was wrestling with the arm bands of the singlet for his strongman costume. his exposed chest, abs and shoulders were oiled with body shimmer oil. he looked like adonis. his eyes fell on you. he was speechless in a whole new way. “(y/n)-..” he trailed off, his fake vintage mustache falling into your hands. “like it?” you asked twirling around in a cloud of glitter and hairspray. “y-yes.. very much.” he said quietly. he was entranced. “let’s take a picture, toshi!” you pushed his mustache to his upper lip and he caught you by the arm. your breath caught in your throat as you looked into his eyes. “t-toshi?” you said softly, blushing. “trick or teat, (y/n).” he pressed his lips firmly into yours and pulled you close. as you pulled away, his serious face melted and he started to laugh- his mustache had stuck to your upper lip. he grabbed his phone and said, “smile, pumpkin. it’s going to be a wild night.” you posed seductively as ushijima flexed for the photo and he sent it to the team. your phone started to blow up and you both laughed, reading the reactions of your friends.

desperate measures . part one
Tumblr media
Theme: post breakup/rekindle romance, sharing hotel room trope, multi-part fic, oikawa toru x f!reader
Warnings: explicit language, explicit sexual content (later), angst and fluff, alcohol use, also original character in this (only for plot purposes), aged up characters
Author’s Note: So I’m not sure where this idea came from other than taking a “bed sharing” trope and going maybe one step further with a “room sharing” trope. This is my first Haikyuu fic and I’m terribly nervous about posting it, especially as this fic is multi-part and a gift to the lovely @shinsotired who also made me this gif because she’s a gem and I love her so much. D: She pretty much encouraged me to write for haikyuu and forced me to watch the anime to begin with - so I figured I’d write her favorite character :P
-------
Part One
Bouncing your leg, you pulled his warm-up jacket, with his number one plastered on the back, closer to your body as your eyes lit up watching your boyfriend play his final match. You caught a glimpse of his chocolate eyes looking up in the stands for you, causing your breath to catch in your throat before embarrassment crept up your neck before burning at your cheeks. The whistle blew again before you watched him return his attention to the game as you watched him do his signature jump serve.
The entirety of Aoba Johsai erupted in cheers as you watched him ace another serve on the opposite side of the net. You jumped to your feet before throwing your arms around your best friend, Sumiye, sitting next to you. She giggled in response as you both peeled away from one another and turned your attention back to the game.
“Oikawa’s serves are amazing today!” she squealed.
“I know,” you replied, clutching his warm-up jacket closer to your body. “He and Hajime are doing amazing. This match has been insane. It’s like they’re playing a completely different team from the last time.”
“You know,” Sumiye said, grinning. “Oikawa owes them all ramen if they lose the match, at least that’s what Hamije texted me last night before I went to bed. Boys are so weird.”
You opened your mouth to respond when the entire crowd gasped forcing you to turn back to the match and seeing the score read: 24-25, favoring Karasuno. “...one more point and they win the set,” you whispered. You felt your spine go rigid as you watched the next serve take place.
“Don’t worry,” Sumiye said, grabbing your hand. “They always manage… no matter what!”
The words from the court of “CHANCE BALL” echoed throughout the gymnasium, pulling your attention back toward the game. Your eyes went wide as you watched Oikawa rush out of bounds at the ball after being knocked out by a fellow teammate. A rush of anxiety washed over you as you watched him point to Iwaizumi and manage to hit a perfect set toward him before tumbling into the seats along the sidelines. He jumped to his feet, rushing back to his vice-captain for assistance as Karasuno managed to read the play to set up to block the spike.
“COME ON!” Sumiye screamed out to Iwaizumi, jumping up onto her seat. “HIT IT HAJIME!”
To your relief, you heard Iwazumi make contact with the ball before slamming it down onto the Karasuno side before being received by the Karasuno captain, Daichi, before rocketing out of bounds. “YES!” you screamed, jumping up next to Sumiye on the seat. “IT’LL BE OUT NOW! THEY’LL TIE!”
“...oh no.” You heard Sumiye’s voice as you watched another member of Karasuno strike the ball back in bounds and toward the ace. The ball was spiked hard back toward Aoba Johsai before being stopped and hit into the net. You felt your stomach rising almost to your throat as your grip on Sumiye’s hand tightened before Mad Dog was able to strike the ball back into the air and over the net toward…
“Kageyama…” you said, your body beginning to tremble as you watched Oikawa move his position on the court.
“BLOCK HIM!” Sumiye screamed as Kageyama’s attempt to spike was blocked and struck the Karasuno’s vice-captain in the face before Kageyama moved to set the ball again.
Your eyes widened, noticing number ten on the other team on Karasuno’s side rushed towards the net at lightning speed. This had to be the secret weapon of Karasuno that Oikawa had always mentioned to you after every practice where you would greet him to walk home. Your boyfriend’s eyes were fixated on his rival’s movements before shifting towards number ten.
“N-no way, he broke the wall!” Sumiye shouted.
Oikawa quickly moved to slide across the floor before receiving the ball. The sound of contact with his hand echoed throughout the gymnasium before seeing the ball soar behind Oikawa. Your stomach fell to your feet as the whistle screeched over the roaring crowd. The ball had fallen out of bounds, earning Karasuno the winning point.
Tears beaded at the corner of your eyes as you took a step down from your seat. Your hands clutched Oikawa’s jacket even tighter before you felt Sumiye pull you into another hug. Her body trembled and you could almost tell she was crying with you. “They-they played so well,” she managed out before tightening her grip.
Placing your hands on her shoulders, you gently pushed her away and flashed her a tearful grin. “Let’s go see our boys,” you whispered. “They probably need us more than ever now…”
“Sumi—”
You watched your best friend sprint to her boyfriend, Iwaizumi, before she reached out and brushed the remaining tears in his eyes away with her thumb. It was clear he was embarrassed to be caught in such a  vulnerable state by her but immediately pulled her into a bear hug, resting his chin on the top of her head. Sumiye’s arms snaked around his waist, returning the display of affection. “You did so well,” she cooed. “I’m so proud of you.”
Iwaizumi finally took notice of you standing behind Sumiye and a sigh fell from his lips before pulling away from his girlfriend. “Shittykawa is still in the locker room pouting,” he said flatly. “Maybe you can drag his ass out otherwise we can leave him here.”
“Hajime!” Sumiye hissed, smacking his chest. “Not now.”
He merely shrugged. “What? He is. He’s acting like a child,” he explained. “He’s upset she saw him lose…”
A giggle bubbled from your throat. “Thanks, Iwa,” you replied before racing toward the locker room. You slowly pushed open the door, careful to shield yourself from other guys that happened to be left as you stepped inside. “Toru?” you asked softly. “Are you still here? Iwa said you were…”
“I’m here,” he mumbled, sitting on a bench alone, resting his head in his hands. “I told Iwa-chan I wanted to be alone…”
You kneeled in front of Oikawa before placing your hand on his thigh. “Hey,” you whispered. “He figured I could drag you out so you didn’t miss the bus ride home.”
“You shouldn’t be here,” he replied, refusing to look up at you.
“Toru… You did well.”
“...not well enough.”
Your hands moved to his wrists before pulling his hands away from his face. His dark eyes were swollen from tears as he sniffed back a sob. Immediately, you wrapped your arms around his neck and pulled him into you. He hid his face in your shoulder, trying to force back his tears. “You were amazing Toru,” you whispered, stroking his hair. “I was so impressed, especially that last set. You fell into those chairs just to save your team. You even landed on your bad knee.”
“...you noticed?”
You giggled lightly. “Of course I noticed. You were wincing when you got back to your feet. Does it still hurt?” You felt him shake his head against your shoulder before turning his head and planting his lips against your neck. “Toru, let’s get you changed and ready for the bus okay?”
“I just wish I could’ve faced Ushijima one last time,” Oikawa mumbled.
“Well seeing as you'll be a world-famous volleyball player one day,” you commented. “I’m sure you’ll get your chance to face him again, and win.”
He chuckled in response. “You think so?”
“I know so,” you replied, pulling back before kissing him lightly.
“...hey,” he whispered, grabbing your wrists gently. “I need to talk to you about something…”
Tilting your head to the side, your eyes blinked in confusion. “What is it?”
“Argentina called…”
Your stomach dropped to the floor, “Did they?”
His eyes gazed up to catch yours. “I love you. You know that right?” he said as you gave him a silent nod. Leaning his forehead against yours, a sigh fell from his lips before he closed his eyes. “If you want me to stay… I’ll stay for you. Just compete on the Japanese team—”
Pulling away from him, your eyes went wide, shaking your head furiously at him. “Absolutely not,” you tutted. “You will not give up on your dream just because of me!”
“But,” Oikawa mumbled, sheepishly. “I don’t know when I’d be able to see you again. I can’t just leave you.”
Your eyes softened. “But Toru, you deserve to chase your dreams. Please don’t let me hold you back…” you replied. As much as it pained you to say those words, you knew deep down you could never be responsible for keeping him from the team he had always dreamed of being. You just couldn’t do that to him. You cared too much.
Oikawa stared at you with confusion filled in his eyes for a moment before grabbing you up in his arms and hugging you tightly around your waist. “This isn’t—”
A lump formed in your throat as you hide your face against his neck. “Please don’t say goodbye… it’s not goodbye.”
“You WHAT—!”
“He’s going to Argentina…”
“But, what… HAJIME!” Sumiye yelled before turning her attention to her boyfriend and grabbing him by the collar of his shirt. His bored expression was unchanging as she shook him in frustration, seemingly used to her outbursts. “He’s your friend!”
Iwaizumi let out an aggravated sigh. “Why is he my friend when he does something stupid?” he asked.
Shaking your head, you forced a smile. “We both agreed it was for the best,” you explained. “He wants to go. I’m not going to be the reason he regrets not taking his chance.”
“But you broke up!” Sumiye nearly screamed.
“Sumi… please lower your voice. People are staring at us,” Iwaizumi said before glancing back at you. “And you’re both okay with that decision?”
“Of course!”
“...but why?” Sumiye interjected. “You two were perfect—”
Your hand shot up to silence your best friend. “We decided if we were supposed to be together,” you said. “We’ll find our way back to each other.”
“In different countries?!”
“Yes.”
“Hajime—!”
“Yes Sumi,” he replied, rubbing his temples. “I hear you…”
“I’m going to text him—”
Iwaizumi snatched the phone from his girlfriend’s hands, holding it over her head, causing her to pout. “No,” He said, his voice going stern. “None of that. We aren’t interfering, Sumi.”
“Asshole! I can’t reach! Give back my phone!”
“You can have this back when you promise to act like an adult.”
“Don’t think I won’t climb you like a tree—!”
You couldn’t help the laughter that bubbles from your throat as you watched the two. It was a much-needed break from the loneliness you were experiencing after you and Oikawa had ended your relationship. While it had been weeks, no one seemed to notice only because Oikawa spent so much time practicing even when you two were together. It wasn’t until Sumiye noticed you had returned his warm-up jacket and sweatshirts that she had begun to suspect something had changed.
“We graduate soon anyway,” you said mostly to yourself. “He’ll probably forget I even existed…”
“NO!”
Your attention was jerked back to your best friend as she shot a glare in your direction. “Sumi—“
“He could never!”
Iwaizumi sighed before covering her mouth. “If you two thought this was best,” He said, shrugging his shoulders. “Then fine. I won’t push either way…as for mouth here, she needs to respect both decisions on this.”
Sumiye peeled his palm from her mouth. “Mouth?!”
Another smile formed over your lips as you continued to enjoy this outing with your friends, and before you knew it… it was time to head home. You gave Sumiye a tight squeeze before bidding the couple farewell. Pulling out your phone, you sighed, scrolling through your texts. While yes, you and Oikawa had split, you were still texting back and forth constantly. Mutual breakups almost seemed a little more difficult than the more messy ones. You were both on speaking terms, conversing about meetups, and when you could stop by to drop off his clothes he had lent. Needless to say, it was a weird state to be in.
Tears began forming in the corner of your eyes, realizing that tomorrow morning - he would be leaving. His flight to South America was set and despite his family’s plea for you to join them, you had refused. Swallowing hard as you wiped away the tears, you knew deep down you couldn’t stomach the idea of him stepping foot onto that plane. Saying goodbye, wasn’t an option.
The street lights cut on as the sky began to darken as you made your way down the street to your home. It was so bizarre just how much life would be changing for everyone in the coming weeks. Oikawa was leaving for South America, while you, Sumiye, and Iwaizumi planned to stay behind in Japan and attend college.
“...hey, Y/N.”
You stopped in your tracks as you reached your home, finding Oikawa sitting on your front steps. Your eyes fell to the pavement below, wondering just what he was doing here.
“Hey Toru,” you whispered back.
“My sister says she tried texting you,” he continued. “But you didn’t want to come to the airport tomorrow.”
You fell quiet.
“If it’s because of the breakup, my family isn’t-”
“Toru no,” you replied softly. “It’s not because of that.”
“Then what? I want you to see me off…”
The corners of your lips dropped into a frown as the tears began beading in the corner of your eyes again. “I just can’t watch you get on that plane,” you forced out. “Please don’t make me.”
Oikawa’s eyes softened at your distress before taking a step toward you. He tried to reach out and touch your cheek in an attempt to comfort you. “I don’t understand. I thought you wanted me to go?”
“I do!” you exclaimed, the tears finally slid down your cheeks. “I want you to accomplish all of your dreams Toru! But watching you step foot on that plane tomorrow… it’ll kill me! Don’t you understand?!”
His brown eyes went wide with surprise at your outburst before his hand fell back down to his side. “Do you think this has been easy on me?” he asked, his voice strained. “I’m going to a country where I don’t know a living soul… for volleyball. While you and Sumi and Iwa-chan get to run off to college and enjoy more time together—” He paused briefly, choking back a sniffle. “And to find out you don’t even want to see me off?”
“Because… I know I said I wanted you to go,” you whispered. “But… Toru.”
He quickly took another step toward you before pulling you into him. His arms snaked around your waist as you buried your face against his chest. Your eyes slid shut as you took in the scent of his cologne, trying to imprint it in your memory. A small sniff came from you before you couldn’t hold back the tears anymore. His grip tightened around your waist as you began to sob, wishing this wasn’t how it had to be.
“Toru,” you cried out. “I just…”
“Shh,” he whispered, planting a kiss on top of your head. “I know, I know you do…”
“Is it going to hurt forever?” you asked him.
“God, I hope not,” he replied honestly.
You pulled away from him, rubbing the heel of your palm against your eyes. “I’m sorry.”
Oikawa tilted his head. “For what?” he asked.
“...this?”
He flashed a lopsided smile. “Oh please,” he said, waving you off. “I’ve seen you in worse states.”
“You know I love you, right?”
His smile grew wider. “And I love you.”
“Just don’t forget okay?”
“Never…”
But he had.
You both had.
You found yourself standing at your mailbox on the first floor of your apartment building as you thumbed through your mail. It had been years since that fateful night, and you found as time moved forward, the pain in your chest hurt less and less. You heard from him less and less, and before you knew it. It was strange really as the distance grew… you noticed he had started dating through social media until you were seemingly strangers. It was over.
Sighing, you noticed a pink envelope that seemingly stood out from the rest of the mail. You flipped it around before tearing into the paper, revealing lovely stationery inside, a wedding announcement, and one you had been waiting weeks for.
You beamed as your eyes traced over the intricate lettering as it was finally official: Iwaizumi and Sumiye had formally announced their wedding. While you had known details for months, it seemed even more real to see the announcement physically in your hands. You were thrilled for your two best friends and happily accepted the role of maid of honor for her.
Smiling, you pulled out your cell phone before unlocking the device and tapping on Sumiye’s name to FaceTime with her. You both squealed upon seeing the other before you held up the wedding announcement for Sumiye to see. “It’s gorgeous!” you squealed, happily.
“Oh my god! You got yours already! That was so fast!” your friend cried out happily. “God… I can’t believe how fast this wedding is coming. By the end of the month, I’ll be married. I’m getting nervous.”
“Cold feet?” It was Iwaizumi in the background.
“In your dreams!” Sumiye hissed.
“Have you warned Y/N yet?” he asked.
Confusion filled your eyes. “Warn me about what?”
Sumiye shot a glare toward Iwaizumi over her shoulder before turning her attention back to you. She flashed a nervous smile before letting a sigh. “...So. There’s something I have to tell you and I don’t know how you’re going to feel…”
“...what is it?”
“Hajime’s man of honor…”
“Okay? What does that have to do with—”
“It’s Oikawa. He’s flying up here from Argentina for the wedding. He’s staying for the month.”
You froze at the mere sound of his name. Things hadn’t ended terribly between the two of you but you could understand your friends’ concerns about the sheer awkwardness of your ex-boyfriend.
“It’s fine,” you said quickly. “It’s fine. It’ll be nice to see him.”
“You swear you’re okay with this?”
“Totally!” you added, shaking your head. “It’ll be fine. We just have to walk down the aisle together. No big deal.”
Sumiye smiled at you. “So when are you heading here? We have your room reservation set up.”
“This afternoon,” you explained, thankful the drive to the city was only about an hour away depending on traffic. “Is that okay?”
“Well, that’ll give us time to pick up Shittykawa from the airport. We can meet up with Y/N tomorrow.” Iwaizumi started, rolling his eyes. “The princess can’t be bothered to get a shuttle to the hotel so we’ll have to leave soon.”
“...how are you, two even friends?” Sumiye asked, staring at her fiancé. He merely nodded before exiting out of the video frame. “Just head to the hotel and we can meet up tomorrow.”
Chuckling, you shook your head. “Sumi, I’ll be fine and I’ll stop by your apartment tomorrow okay?” you said. “And we can start all the party plans!”
“Sumi! We need to leave!”
“Sorry,” Sumiye said, sighing. “Hajime’s excited to see Oikawa again so we have to go to the airport now. I’ll see you tomorrow. Call me if you need anything okay! Bye!”
You waved to your friend before the video chat ended. A sigh left your lips as you adjusted the purse slung over your shoulder. You shut your mailbox, locking it before making your way back to your apartment to grab your suitcases and drop off your mail. You slowly opened the apartment door, tossing the mail onto the kitchen counter before grabbing the handles of your two suitcases before pulling them out and locking the apartment door behind you.
Anxiety began building up in the back of your mind despite your earlier sentiment that you would be fine seeing Oikawa again. It made you feel almost nauseous. Thankfully you two wouldn’t have to spend too much time together and figured that Oikawa would rather stay with Iwaizumi and the other boys for an impromptu reunion. You couldn’t help the smile that broke out over your features as you thought the boys would probably demand a volleyball game against the pro.
You perhaps it will be nice to see everyone again.
You opened the trunk of your car, tossing the two suitcases inside and slamming it shut. Making your way to the driver’s side of the car, you opened the door before sliding into the seat and starting the car. You wondered what Oikawa had been up to since moving to Argentina and playing for the national team. You would be lying if you said you hadn’t watched some of his matches.
“Ugh,” you groaned, gripping the steering wheel as you made your way toward the highway. This was going to such a long drive with your thoughts. “Damn it…”
Your hand moved to turn up the dial to the volume up on the radio, trying to drown out the thoughts of your past relationship bouncing around the walls of your mind. And thankfully, made the hour-long drive tolerable and before you knew it, you had arrived in the city as you parked your car.
Random dings from your phone alerted loudly before you were able to even exit your car. Random texts from the boys from Aobajohsai blowing up your phone in excitement to see you and the others again. Giggling, you quickly typed a reply announcing your arrival before receiving another message from Makki claiming “we know”.
Confused, you stepped out of your car before grabbing your bags from the trunk and heading into the entrance of the hotel. And the message made sense. You were instantly pounced on by members of Aobajohsai and slammed with a million questions about what you had been up to after high school and college.
“Guys guys,” you said, raising your hands in defense. “Settle down I can’t understand anything you’re saying when you all talk at once.”
“You look great!” Makki said grinning.
“Oh boy,” Matsun said, almost smirking at you. “Someone is going to have a heart attack when they get a good look at you.”
“When who does?”
“...Y/N?”
Your body went rigid as you recognized the voice behind you. Swallowing hard, you forced yourself to turn around and come face to face with a ghost from your past. “Toru…” you whispered, noting the almost seemed taller and his muscles even larger. But you couldn’t help but smile when you noticed he still had the same smile from high school… despite the glasses on his face now.
“Hey…” Oikawa said softly. “How are you?”
“O-oh I’ve been great. Busy teaching, and running the girls’ volleyball club now,” you replied, tucking a strand of hair behind your ear. “...since when do you wear glasses?”
Oikawa opened his mouth to reply before being struck in the back of the head. “He doesn’t,” Iwaizumi’s gruff voice said as he appeared behind him. “They’re fake. Don’t let him lie to you.”
“Iwa-channnn~” Oikawa whined as he rubbed the spot he had been struck. “That wasn’t very nice. I just got here!”
You watched as the two, old friends continued to interact and it brought a nostalgic smile to your face. It was so strange how some things never change no matter how much time had passed, but at the same time, you and Oikawa were so different now. He was a professional volleyball player for the national team in Argentina while you had stayed behind and become a teacher at Aobajohsai…
“Y/N?”
Your eyes widened as you heard your name. “Yes?” you said, looking up at Iwaizumi.
“If you’re able to wait an hour,” he said. “I have to run and grab Sumi from her mom’s. They were finishing up food plans for the wedding—”
Shaking your head quickly, you forced another smile on your face. “No no!” you exclaimed, much louder than you had meant to. “I can meet up with you and her tomorrow. I’m really tired from the drive and just want to lay down.”
Iwaizumi offered you a knowing smile. “I’ll tell her to call tonight.”
You nodded before heading to the desk to check-in before grabbing the card key from the desk clerk. A small sigh left your lips as you trudged to the elevator with your bags behind you. You stepped inside before pressing the third floor and resting your back against the elevator wall.
“Hey wait!”
Your eyes shot up to see Oikawa racing toward you. For a split second, you thought about hitting the door close button before putting your foot down against the door to stop it from shutting. Grinning at you, he glanced at the buttons and never pressed - you figured he would be on the same floor.
“Thanks,” he said, smiling. “I wasn’t sure I’d make it.”
Rolling your eyes, you chewed on your lower lip as anxiety began building in the pit of your stomach. “It’s fine. I figured we’d all be on the same floor,” you said, shrugging your shoulders lightly. The elevator dinged, catching both of your attention. The third floor, it read as the door slid open. Oikawa stepped aside, allowing you out first. You flashed him an awkward smile before making your way to your hotel room. You fumbled with the card in your hand as Oikawa came up next to you with a confused expression.
“What?”
He looked at you, then the room number, and then between both car keys. “This is my room.”
“No… they told me 305 is my room.”
“Jesus Christ…” he grumbled before snatching the card key out of your hand and examining it. “This-this can’t be right…”
“What?”
“How the hell did they give us the same room?!”
“What?!”
“They booked us to share a room!”

sailing to the top ch. 6 snippet
“So,” Kageyama started, trying to mask his nervous eagerness with indifference. “What now? You do know that the press won’t stop bothering you until you reveal everything.”
“Hmm,” Hinata hummed. “It’ll be no fun if we just sit and down and go ‘surprise!’”
“Of course,” Kageyama deadpanned.
Hinata giggled.
“What?”
“Wouldn’t it be funny if everyone was expecting a boyfriend reveal, but it turned out you were my fiancé or something?”
The setter stiffened and looked down at Hinata who was still scrolling through his phone in casual gesture, as if remarking about the weather. “W-What if…” Kageyama cleared his throat. Citrus-scented waves lightly tickled his cheeks, soft and warm, smelling of summer days and all its vibrance. Gazing down, he could clearly count each individual freckle, a constellation dusting his nose and cheeks, as if the stars couldn’t all be contained in his eyes and found home on sunkissed skin. God, he loved this man. “Let’s do it.”
“Hm? Do what?” Shouyou asked offhandedly, still absorbed in the content on his phone.
“Get engaged.”
And finally, Kageyama had his boyfriend’s attention.
“Huuh?!” Hinata straightened abruptly, gripping Kageyama’s forearm in alarm. “W-W-What?!”
Kageyama flicked his boyfriend’s forehead. “You’re the one who brought it up first, dumbass.”
Hinata blushed furiously, “Y-Yeah…But…”
The setter raised a brow, “What, so you didn’t mean it?”
“O-Of course I meant it, Bakayama! But…”
“But….?”
The remaining shock flickered and wavered, dying down as it was replaced with resolve and a typical fire. Honey-tinted eyes looked up intensely into cobalt ones, “Okay. Let’s do it.”
Of course, Kageyama had already been thinking about proposing. He just didn’t know where to even begin.
His boyfriend was a simple person through and through, fancy clothes and elegant dinner dates a nemesis to the loud and energetic whirlwind that was Hinata Shouyou. When requesting help from his senpais, Suga-san suggested a picnic. It was a great idea, the only problem being the lack of privacy. While private reservations were possible at restaurants, the open nature was free for everyone. Suffice to say, Kageyama did not know how he would propose, only that he wanted to.
As a last resort, he had texted Kenma, begrudgingly admitting that the former setter would know what Hinata would like best.
KENMA
kenma: the best proposal for shouyou would be one that isn’t a surprise.
kenma: if u were to surprise him with a ring and shou didn’t have one prepared for u
kenma: i think deep down he would feel a little sad that he didnt have a ring to give u too
kenma: idk if that makes things harder or easier for u but i don’t think u need to worry about planning a surprise or smth complicated. if anything, just go ring shopping together and make a casual date out of it. i think he would really like that.
kageyama: that helps a lot. thank you kenma
kenma: np, gl kageyama
And Kageyama knew Kenma was right. But, given that, casually remarking his desire to get engaged seemed just as difficult as planning an elaborate surprise.
However, Hinata had, unknowingly, granted him an opening, and it was a moment of pure spontaneity. Intoxicated by summer smells and sunkissed skin, Kageyama had blurted out his proposal, and Hinata had accepted it with a breathtaking grin and tender kiss. It was the best spontaneous decision Kageyama had ever made. It couldn’t have been more perfect…more them.
True to Kenma’s word, Hinata had loved the idea of a ring shopping date. The ginger had gotten eagerly dressed for their day out, stuffing his bright hair into an inconspicuous cap and throwing a mask onto Kageyama’s face before excitedly rushing themselves out the door.
“Now we can give rings to each other at the same time! How perfect is that!” Hinata skipped, swinging their interlocked hands as they easily maneuvered through the Tokyo crowd.
Kageyama smiled, his hand tightening around Hinata’s. “I had wanted to surprise you with it, but I’m glad you’re enjoying this.”
Hinata pouted, “But if you surprised me, then that means you would’ve beaten me!”
“Huuuh?” Kageyama stared at his boyfriend, bafflement etched in furrowed brows. “Proposing isn’t a competition!”
“Bakageyama! Shh!” Hinata yelled, covering the setter’s mouth with his free hand. “I know we’re disguised right now, but what if people recognize you through your scary voice!”
The setter tried to express his disbelief through his practiced glare. Shaking his head, he let out a loud huff through his nose. “enma ‘asight.”
Hinata removed his hand, “Huh?”
Kageyama rolled his eyes. “I said Kenma was right.”
“About what?”
“He said you would want to present rings together rather than me surprise you because you’d be sad if I were the only one who had a ring ready.” With his free hand, he cuffed the ginger on the head, “But he never said anything about you making it a competition, boke.”
Hinata giggled, “It was probably implied.”
Kageyama sighed and pulled his boyfriend along, unable to form a reply to such idiocy. Although, he probably would have felt the same way if Hinata proposed first, but he would never admit that; he had a reputation to uphold as the smarter half of their relationship. He was a genius, after all.
After allowing himself to be dragged a few paces, Hinata suddenly pulled back, tugging Kageyama’s arm to a halt. The setter turned. “What?”
“I have an idea!” A grin lit up Hinata’s face, “If we buy the rings separately and give them to each other at the end of the day, it’ll still be kind of a surprise!”
“Huh?”
“We won’t know what kind of rings we’re gonna receive, so the element of surprise is still there! It’ll be fun! Okay?” And before Tobio could reply, Hinata had already run off. “I’ll meet you at the park at 6!” he yelled with a last wave.
With a sigh, Kageyama stared as the black cap hiding the conspicuous ginger hair slowly got lost in the crowd. Glancing at the time, he had roughly four hours to find a ring, and he was going to find a damn perfect one.
Four hours later, he made his way to the park, his heart clutched in his hand in form of a small, black box. The raven walked toward a bench where a familiar silhouette sat. As he drew closer, the figure looked up and stood. A gentle breeze lightly ruffled ginger waves and freckled cheeks lifted in an uncharacteristic shy smile, “Hi, Tobio.” He held up a ball that was by his side. “Want to play?”
With the silhouette cast by the setting sun, Kageyama had assumed the ball was a volleyball because what else could it be? However, when he nodded and walked closer, he realized it was a soccer ball. The bashful smile gone and replaced with a competitive grin the setter knew all too well, what could he do but mirror that resolve. Soccer it was.
Unfortunately, pure force of will and volleyball genius did not translate into coordinated footwork. In fact, volleyball genius instinctively reached for the ball with outstretched hands when the infuriatingly natural athlete that was Hinata Shouyou would kick the ball into a perfect arc in the air.
“You can’t touch the ball, Bakayama!” Hinata would yell, a loud laugh following.
Kageyama would reply by setting the ball to his head.
The game of soccer was quickly attempted and forgotten, and the ball rested between their feet as the two volleyball athletes relaxed against a tree. In the distance, the sun kissed the horizon, and as if hearings its own confession, the sky glowed with the sweetest blush. The clouds blossomed pink and golden rays caressed the earth with soft tranquility. The summer breeze danced across the grass, lightly kissing the hairs of those it passed by and leaving it frivolously tousled. Tobio ran long, pale fingers through the soft, ginger locks, further messing what the wind left behind. “Shou?”
“Hmm?”
“Did I ever tell you what my Jii-san told me?”
“That you’d meet someone who would be better than you at volleyball?”
Kageyama hummed. He gently dislodged Hinata’s head from his shoulder and turned to grab both his hands, now sitting face-to-face. “Yeah… When I first heard that, I hated it: hated the thought of someone being better, the thought of losing. But when it came to you, I never minded losing.” He looked down at their intertwined hands, unable to stare directly into those brown eyes, a dark amber that glowed with a vibrant warmth reminiscent of sweet love, indomitable spirit, and childlike grins. “I-I mean…I don’t enjoy losing. But…it doesn’t feel bad when it’s to you. It makes me feel more…motivated and it’s…nice,” he finished dumbly.
Hinata snorted, though it was with a fond smile and slightly damp eyes. “That’s because you’re just competitive” He sniffed and rubbed his eyes roughly. “Baka Bakayama,” he muttered, clutching at Kageyama’s sleeve tightly. “Making me cry with all your…words.”
The setter smiled as he lifted a hand to gently wipe a falling tear. Shouyou leaned into the touch.
Kageyema shifted to present the box he had shoved in his pocket. “Uhm,” he began awkwardly. “I know people normally wear their engagement rings on their hands…”
Hinata laughed, “Yes, Tobio. That’s where rings usually go.”
The setter glared at his boyfriend. Shouyou giggled harder but nudged Kageyama to continue, eyes gentle and fond.
Kageyama cleared his throat, “As I was saying…” He opened the box and carefully took out the ring. Hinata gasped as a gold chain followed. “I didn’t know when exactly you wanted to go public with our relationship, but it’s difficult to wear a ring and hide it. But necklaces are easier…”
“Oh, Tobio,” Hinata breathed, eyes shimmering with unshed tears. But before Kageyama could continue, the ginger had started to fumble with his pocket and hastily pulled a similar sized box. The setter observed curiously as Shouyou also opened the box and took out a ring. His eyes widened when he saw a similar chain follow.
“I also asked if they had a chain for the ring.” Hinata blushed as he let the chain dangle from his fingers, metal glinting as it caught the sun intermittently as the breeze swayed the ring back and forth. “Not because I wanted you to hide it or anything,” he added hurriedly. “I just thought, since we can’t wear jewelry when we play, it might be harder to lose the ring if it were on a chain…” The ginger clutched the necklace nervously and slightly lowered his hand, “But now I’m realizing it’s a stupid reason because a necklace is basically just as small as a ring, and it would still be easy to lose. So technically there was no point in getting the ring as a neckl—”
“I love it.” Tobio quickly cut off Shouyou’s rambling. He held up his own necklace-ring, unclasping it, and put it around Hinata’s neck. “Love you.”
Tears streamed freely down Shouyou’s face as he, too, clasped the necklace around the setter’s neck, “Surprise, Tobio.”
Tobio chuckled. “You’re a dumbass,” he whispered, slowly leaning in.
“But I’m your dumbass,” Shouyou smiled cheekily with shimmering eyes and damp cheeks.
“Just shut up,” Kageyama muttered.
The ginger giggled though it was quickly swallowed by a kiss.
Unfortunately, their week-long break had come to an end, and goodbyes, no matter how common, never became easier. But this time, they departed as fiancés, a physical promise of their forever hidden under clothes, away from prying eyes, but closer to heart.

Day Three: Five Times Kuroo initiated PDA, One Time Kenma Did (Kuroken Week 2020)
a03
number five includes underage drinking so if that’s not your jam you can skip it, other that that, pretty much what the title says.
1
Well, it wasn’t PDA per say, but ever since they changed from friends who liked to kiss and hug each other, to boyfriends who liked to kiss and hug each other, public intimacy felt different. It was as simple as Kuroo’s arm around his waist as they left practice. The sun was setting, painting the sky in pastel pinks and purples. With spring approaching, the breeze no longer held its icy bite, and was pleasant against their skin. Instead of exhaustion like usual, Kenma felt a satisfying weight in his bones.
“Is that okay?” Kuroo asked when he felt Kenma stiffen. His voice was quiet so the others wouldn’t hear.
“Y-yeah,” Kenma nodded and hoped his hair hid his blush. He liked it quite a lot actually, even if it was a bit embarrassing when their team could see. Even so, the others knew about their relationship, even before Kenma and Kuroo did, so Kenma supposed it wasn’t such a big deal.
“Yeah?” Kuroo checked.
“Yeah,” Kenma assured, and squeezed the hand that lingered on his waist.
2
It was the summer term and Kuroo and Kenma could finally make use of the ice cream parlour they passed on the way home. It was a small shop, but it boasted over fifty different flavours and countless combinations. Even so, they both got the same order every time – Kuroo would have a chocolate dipped and rainbow sprinkled cone with three scoops of bubble gum, KitKat, and Oreo ice cream, whilst Kenma had a plain cone with one strawberry scoop.
They ate quickly to avoid the sun devouring their cones before they could. Kuroo turned to look at Kenma, feeling his breath catch as the sun illuminated the amber in his eyes. There was a smear of strawberry on Kenma’s bottom lip, and Kuroo knew he shouldn’t. He knew that Kenma would be embarrassed, but he also knew that Kenma looked adorable when he blushed so, really, he couldn’t be held accountable for what he did next.
He leaned down to swipe the ice cream off with his thumb, smirking as he licked it off. Kenma, once he processed what had happened, jabbed Kuroo in the stomach and walked off without him.
“Wait!” Kuroo cried, holding his stomach with laughter as he ran to catch up.
“You could have just told me,” Kenma mumbled, barely audible. He felt like his face was on fire. Judging by Kuroo’s grin, it didn’t go unnoticed.
“But where’s the fun in that?” Kuroo snickered.
“Idiot,” Kenma muttered, but Kuroo could hear the smile in his voice.
3
They were at the arcade that weekend. It had started as a group outing until everyone “mysteriously” disappeared. Well, they couldn’t say they didn’t appreciate it, even if they did love hanging out with their friends all the same.
Kuroo had been battling with the claw machine and had spent far too much money trying to claim a calico kitten. Kuroo claimed it looked exactly like Kenma but he didn’t see it. Yet again, the machine taunted Kuroo with its cheery music as the claw returned to its normal position.
“These are all rigged anyway,” Kuroo mumbled but he couldn’t hide his look of disappointment.
Kenma sighed, knowing it was ridiculous, but he wanted to cheer him up anyway. He would only try it once, and if he failed, he failed.
The coin plinked as Kenma submitted it, the lights flashing once more. He focused all his energy into moving the crane into position for the toy Kuroo had been eyeing. He bit his lip, tense as the crane captured it. It landed in the depository and Kuroo yelled, shaking Kenma with a bit too much force, but Kenma didn’t care. He was smiling too hard.
Kenma picked up the cat and offered it to Kuroo with a shy smile. Kuroo took it and held it to his chest like a baby, before leaning down to kiss him. It was chaste and short, but soft and sweet too. Kenma couldn’t help but giggle. Kuroo felt his lifespan increase with the sound.
4
In hopes of actually getting some studying done, Kuroo was at the library. However, taking Kenma with him was a mistake. Focusing on his calculus homework was even less inviting when he could be focusing on Kenma instead. Kenma’s brow was furrowed as he tried to figure out the problem in his textbook. It was stupidly adorable and Kuroo was very, very gay, so really, what was he to do except kiss him?
“What’s that for?” Kenma’s hand touched the cheek that Kuroo had pecked. His face was so soft under Kuroo’s lips that he had to kiss him again on the corner of his mouth that time. “We’re in public,” he scowled, face cotton candy pink.
“No one’s watching,” Kuroo replied, “besides, there’s barely anyone here.”
“Doesn’t matter, we’re supposed to be working,” Kenma sighed.
“But I’m boreddd,” Kuroo groaned.
“I’ll let you hold my hand at our next practice if you finish your homework before we leave,” Kenma said, grinning when Kuroo scribbled away on his worksheet with an almost terrifying speed.
5
Kenma, against all odds, had been roped into a party. Tricked was probably the more accurate word. He was promised it would be a small gathering of friends, but the house had quickly filled, and alcohol and loud music was put into the mix. Kenma’s experience of drinking was limited to sniffing beer once and immediately deciding it wasn’t for him. Publicly humiliating himself didn’t particularly appeal to Kenma, so he left the drinking to the others, those being mainly Kuroo.
Kuroo found Kenma in the kitchen talking to Shouyo. He shuffled towards them, smile splitting his face as he tackled them both into a bear hug.
“Hinataaaaaa,” he yelled, giving him a kiss on the cheek. “Hinata, my dude, I love you so much!”
“Aw, thanks! I love you too!” Shouyo giggled.
“You have no idea how grateful I am for you. You make Kenma so happy. You should see how he looks when he texts you!” Kuroo rambled, eyes glassy.
“Kuroo!” Kenma hissed, cheeks turning as red as the punch besides them.
“But don’t go getting cocky, shorty!” Kuroo declared, pointing an accusatory finger towards him. “He’s my boyfriend, okay? I know he’s wonderful, and amazing, and beautiful, and perfect, but he’s off limits!”
Hinata simply laughed, excusing himself when Kageyama waved him over.
“You’re so wonderful,” Kuroo whined into Kenma’s ear, “and your hair smells so good, and you in general smell really good. I know it’s not your shower gel because I’ve used it before and it’s not the same.” His arms were wrapped around Kenma and he was swaying them both out of time to the music.
Kenma couldn’t respond, frozen.
“Kitten,” Kuroo sighed. Kenma wouldn’t deny that he loved Kuroo calling him that (at least not to himself,) but he didn’t want other people overhearing and knowing how sappy he was. “You’re my favourite person.”
Kenma swallowed, feeling his throat close.
“Oh.”
“Yeah, you’re just…you’re so good, and I’m so lucky to have you in my life, and I-”
“Kuroo,” Kenma interrupted before the other would start crying. “You’re my favourite person too.”
He accepted the kiss Kuroo leaned down for. It was a bit sloppy, and he tasted like vodka, but it was perfect.
+1
It was their last match before Kuroo was off to university. It was far from official, being only a practice match with the neighbouring school. But it still felt just as real as an official tournament. It was certainly not the last time Kuroo and Kenma would play together, but it was the last time they would play together as Nekoma High School. Despite himself, Kenma’s chest felt delightfully tight with nostalgia for a time that hadn’t passed yet. He hadn’t expected volleyball of all things to make him emotional, at least he hadn’t a year ago. But when Kuroo successfully blocked the spike that won the game, the ball slapping against the floor with a reverberating thud, he smiled so wide it hurt his face.
The team erupted into cheers, leaping in all different directions. But Kenma was only focused on one thing. He walked towards Kuroo. Kuroo was practically beaming, warmth spilling with it. When he waked over to give Kenma a hug, Kenma leaned as high up on his tiptoes as he could to kiss him. Kuroo melted into it, his cheeks hot beneath Kenma’s hands.
“We did it,” Kuroo panted, looking adorably dazed.
“Yeah,” Kenma smiled, “we did.”

Smitten - Part 1/5

That's about all the clarifications I need to give, enjoy reading!! Wolf!Hybrid!Hinata x Reader Reader is related to Oikawa, but does not have the same last name.
Hinata watched as he saw Tsukishima and Iwaizumi interact with each other. And then his eyes drifted off to Yamaguchi and Yachi and his ears drooped, his tail at a standstill. I want to find my soulmate too! He spun the volleyball in his hand and Sugawara noticed the downcast mood around the young wolf-hybrid. Excusing himself from his current conversation with Asahi and Nishinoya, he made his way towards the ball of sunshine. "Something on your mind Hinata?" Sugawara asked as his tail languidly swished back in forth. It seemed as though every time Sugawara purposely brought himself into another hybrid's issues, he was clearly amused and proud of himself at the same time. "Ah! Suga-san!" Hinata perked up, his ears now slightly higher than before and his tail also swished back and forth, albeit a bit slower than the silver tail of the fox-senpai in front of him. Hinata pouted, "It's nothing really.. I just wanted to find my soulmate too!" "Ah," Sugawara nodded and he said, "You have to give it time Hinata, not all of us are that lucky." "I know, but," Hinata grumbled, "Even that Tsukishima found his soulmate."
Sugawara held back a laugh, clearly amused at how the normally energetic ball of sunshine was actually salty jealous of the taller blonde middle blocker. Tsukishima happened to see that the two were looking his way and raised an eyebrow in confusion. Sugawara shook his head and Tsukishima turned back to talk to Iwaizumi, clearly teasing her as she pouted and hit him back. "Ne, Suga-san," Hinata called out, gaining the attention of the setter. "What did you say again were the symptoms of us finding our soulmates?" "Attraction, desire to protect, and understanding." "Attraction means wanting to be near them right?" Upon receiving a nod of the head, Hinata asked, "Then what does understanding mean?" "Understanding is something you can see most commonly among Yachi and Yamaguchi, the two of them are basically capable of understanding what the other wants from just a glance. Although Tsukishima and Iwaizumi-chan are starting to get a hang of it too, Tsukishima more so than Iwaizumi-chan." "I see," Hinata mumbled. The volleyball was now tucked in one arm and his other hand was rubbing his chin as though he was deep in thought. "Thanks Suga-san!" The energetic male shot off, calling out to Kageyama for one more toss. His entire demeanor changed and it was as if he wasn't just contemplating and moping about the lack of his soulmate. Sugawara fondly sighed and shook his head, "They're all little birds about to leave the nest." "One's a wolf and the other is a bunny, nothing close to being birds Suga." "Daichi," Sugawara laughed, "We're all a part of Karasuno, so we're all crows." Regardless if we're hybrids or not. "True," Daichi chuckled. They were both silent for a while until Daichi asked, "I wonder how Hinata's soulmate will be." "Probably nothing like him, or just like him," Sugawara laughed, and he pointed at the two soulmate couples, "I mean look, Yamaguchi and Yachi-san are similar to each other, but Tsukishima and Iwaizumi are almost complete opposites." "If Tsukishima and Iwaizumi were the same…" Daichi trails off, his face turning a bit paler as he deadpanned, "No." Sugawara frantically nodded his head, "I think I prefer Iwaizumi-chan the way she is."
Hinata was distracted, not too much, but it was enough. There was something very sweet in the air. But he never got nothing more than a whiff of it and it was driving him insane. His ears kept perking and then flattening, when he caught the whiff and when it disappeared. Maybe it's because I'm part wolf, but gods that scent is so sweet. Hinata mumbled, "Where is it coming from?" After he caught whiff of it again, he suddenly stopped walking and waited for the scent again. Kageyama who was walking with him stopped too, clearly confused. And as soon as the duo in the front stopped, the rest did too, all of them confused with how Hinata's nose was sniffing the air. "What are you doing, dumbass Hinata?" "Shut up Kageyama, something smells good but I can't find out where." Kageyama looked confused, but upon seeing how the other hybrids on the team weren't reacting he grumbled, "I think it's just you." Sugawara watched the interaction and asked Hinata, "Is it sweet?" "YEAH!" Hinata cried out, and suddenly he smelled it, "I FOUND IT!" His head snapped in the direction it came from and he sprinted off. And everyone called out his name, but only Kageyama bothered to chase after the idiot. Tanaka and Nishinoya nodded before making a random war cry and chasing after the idiotic duo and Ennoshita sighed, "These idiots." "Did you smell anything though?" Yachi asked Yamaguchi. The bunny shook his head and sheepishly scratched the back of his head, "I don't think my sense of smell is as great as Hinata's." "The shorty is weird enough to begin with, first his ridiculous vertical and now his smell?" Tsukishima scoffed, only to receive a "He's a part wolf Kei, what'd you expect" from Iwaizumi who was smugly poked fun at Tsukishima's stupid comment. "Well, hopefully Tanaka and Nishinoya can bring the two back," Daichi sighed. "It's okay, they'll find their way home, Hinata could just track his own tracks back." Tsukishima sneered, causing him and Yamaguchi to laugh. Iwaizumi sighed, "Oh my god Kei, shut up."
Hinata didn't realize how far away the scent was until he arrived at the school gates of Aoba Johsai. And he froze. Oh my god. This is the Grand King's school. What- why- WHY IS THE SCENT FROM ALL THE WAY OVER HERE? But it was a lot stronger here, and he flinched as he heard the familiar, "Oh! Chibi-chan." "G-G-GRAND KING!?" Hinata jumped backwards, avoiding any physical contact. And when he looks at him, he blanks out. AND THEIR ACE. GRAND KING AND THE ACE OF AOBA JOHSAI ARE- "Oikawa, knock it off, you're scaring him," Iwaizumi butted in. He notices that Hinata calms down significantly once he was a good unreasonable distance away from Oikawa and he asks, "What are you doing here?" "I was-" "HINATA, YOU DUMBASS!!!" Kageyama cried out as he finally caught up. Hinata flinched and Oikawa's eyes narrowed, "Tobio-chan." "Oikawa-san." The two immediately began to stare the other down and Hinata frantically looked between the two, unsure of what to do. Do I stop Kageyama? What if the Grand King starts looking at me like that? And their ace too!? I ONLY WANTED TO FIND THE SWEET SCENT, I DIDN'T MEAN FOR ANY OF THIS TO HAPPEN AND- "Tooru, you're scaring people again? Leave them alone already," your voice cut through the tension like a knife, snapping both Oikawa and Kageyama out of their staring contest. Hinata's mind went numb as he could only focus on your voice. The scent was literally radiating from you, the girl that had just appeared, but his nerves wouldn't move. Hinata was unfortunately stuck. She's... She's so pretty!! And she smells so good. Is it her? This entire time was it her? This pretty lady is- "[L/N]-senpai?"/"[F/N]!" Hinata snapped back to reality upon hearing Kageyama's familiar tone with the girl that had just caught his interest. And he was more than shocked at how cheerful and friendly you were with the normally icy and awkward Kageyama. KAGEYAMA ISN'T AWKWARD AROUND HER AT ALL?! WHAT IS THIS!? "Oh! TOBIO, IT'S SO GOOD TO SEE YOU!!!" You walked up to Kageyama giving him a bright smile before turning to Oikawa and slapping the side of his head, "Seriously it's so embarrassing seeing you bully the underclassmen. Regardless of what school they're from." They're not from here, Kara... Karasuno? "[F/N]!" Oikawa whined. You ignored him and turned to Hinata and asked, "Did Tooru say anything that upset you? I'm so sorry for his idiocy." Aw, he's almost as short as me! How cute!! Hinata furiously shook his head and stuttered, "N-n-n-n-no! No! I-I'm okay! E-e-everything is okay!" You blinked several times, your [e/c] orbs openly displaying the confusion and amusement at how nervous Hinata was. And then upon realizing how cute his nervousness was, you laughed. I could listen to her all day. "That's a relief," you smiled, "I'm glad you're okay." You turned back to Oikawa and mentioned something of the lines of 'going home' and Oikawa mentioned something about 'walking together,' but Hinata's mind was still too frazzled to properly function. But as soon as he saw that you were about to leave, he quickly calls out. "UH." You, along with Oikawa and Iwaizumi, turn around, and Hinata shout-stutters out, "I-I'M SHOU-TA!! I MEAN! WAIT! I MEAN, I'M HINATA SHOUYOU!! F-F-FIRST Y-YEAR IN KARASUNO!" Oikawa nudged you, indicating that Hinata was indeed talking to you, and you let out a soft, "Oh." And then you brightly smiled at the orange haired wolf boy, "I'm [L/N] [F/N], a second year in Aoba Johsai. It's nice to meet you, Hinata-kun."
After you walked away, Kageyama waved his hands in front of Hinata, even shook the boy to try to get his attention, but unfortunately nothing seemed to be working. "Oi! Kageyama!! Hinata!! YOU IDIOTS!!" "Tanaka-san, Nishinoya-san!" Kageyama replies, and then turns back to Hinata and he asks, "Senpai." "Yes?!" the idiot second year duo puff their chest out at the word, and Kageyama asks, "Hinata froze, what do I do?" "Eh?!" [L/N]-chan called my name... and she said nice to meet you. Ah. Hinata's eyes were literally sparkles as a silly stupid grin took over his face and he began to melt into a puddle of happiness. "HINATA?!" "OH MY GOD CALL 119!!" "HINATA. HANG IN THERE HINATA. WE'LL SAVE YOU!!" [L/N]-chan, I can't wait to see her again!!!

For the drabble thingy. Oikage + yellow by coldplay. :))
tbh i don’t even know where i was going with this. but yeah, this drabble is pre relationship oikage and probably not as fluffy or what you wanted but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ i hope u enjoy it anyways! (AO3link)
Kageyama stood outside of Oikawa’s apartment waiting forsomeone to open the door. He knocked again, harder and a bit more impatientthis time. He heard Iwazumi’s comingthrough the wood and relaxed, thankful that at least someone was in the apartment.
“Oh, Kageyama,” Iwaizumi said, relief written all over hisface. “He’s in his room. I was gonna go get some food real quick but if you’rehere then..”
Kageyama stiffened his grip on the convenience store bag, shifting his weight between his legs and frowned. He really didn’t want to bealone with Oikawa. He still hasn’t forgotten the older setter’s face from thelast practice match, pissed off, hurt, guilty.
“Can you come back?” He asked in a timid voice, looking awayfrom Iwaizumi’s knowing stare. “Take your time Iwaizumi-senpai, just come backplease.”
“No problem,” Iwaizumi smiled, placing a comforting palm onKageyama’s shoulder as he left the apartment. “I’ll text you when I’m comingback.”
Kageyama nodded and walked into Oikawa’s place, the AC onhigh as he shivered and walked towards the kitchen. He set the plastic bag onthe table and carefully treaded towards Oikawa’s room, knocking gently on theclosed door.
“Go away.”
He coughed and licked his lips.
“It’s me Oikawa-senpai. Can you let me in?”
“No.”
He sighed loudly and leaned against the door, sure that thebrunet was in his bed, curled up in the comfort of his blankets and fluffypillows. He didn’t press his senpai to let him in nor did he try to get hissenpai to talk to him. He simply turned around and sat against the white door, head leaning back and hitting the door with a gentle thud.
“I’m sorry.”
It wasn’t the right thing to say, in fact, Kageyama didn’tknow why he even said that. Was it because he felt bad that he didn’t know whatto do? Was it because the look on Oikawa’s face from their practice matchagainst Austria reminded him of middle school? Was it because the competitivenature in him was happy about the setter switched and the ultimate win underhis steady but powerful spikes?
“I’m sorry,” he said again, closing his eyes and hoping thatOikawa would just take the apology and warp it to what mattered the most.
He sat there for a good hour if he were to estimate, untilIwazumi entered the apartment again, the smell of takeout, making his stomachgrumble.
“Did he leave his room?” Iwazumi asked, eyebrow rising asKageyama walked into the kitchen eyeing the food ravenously.
“No,” he answered, looking away from the table, guilt risingin his chest as Iwazumi sighed heavily.
“It’s not your fault Kageyama. You know how he gets,” hesaid, shrugging and handed Kageyama a white box full of Mongolian beef. “Thechopsticks are in the bag.”
“Thanks,” Kageyama murmured, reaching into the bag fordisposable chopsticks and looked around the kitchen. “I’ll leave when I’mfinished eating.”
“If it makes you feel better, he was spewing insults andcomplaints up till the moment you got here.”
It didn’t make him feel better, but he gave his senpai a half-heartedsmile and continued to eat.
In their next practice match, Oikawa played the entire game.He was blazing bright with intensity, his spikes were sharp and untouchable, andthere were no wasted movements in his steps. He’s the perfect emulation of aprodigal volleyball player. Something in his stomach clenched as Kageyama heardthe final whistle, the ref telling them to line up and he avoided Oikawa’sgaze.
“I see you didn’t break,” Ushijima said and if it wereanyone but him, Kageyama would think they wanted to start a fight.
“As if I would break over something like that,” Oikawascoffed; rolling his eyes but takes the hidden compliment.
He passed by Kageyama, nodding his head at Kageyama’s soft good game and walked away from the teamtired but rightfully proud.
Oikawa doesn’t play in the next two matches.
-
“Your serves were shaky in the third set.”
Kageyama paused in his stretching, his fingers shaking a bitfrom the exhaustion of the last rally.
“I know, the coach already gave me an earful.”
“You also took too big of a step for your last toss almostsending the ball over the net. You did thank Ushijima for managing to hit thatshitty ball right?”
“Yes Oikawa-senpai, I did.” Kageyama said. He actuallythanked him twice, once for receiving a serve that he was too slow to react toand for hitting his toss that was absolutely hideous. “He said not to worryabout it and to train harder in order for it not to happen again.”
“Sounds like him,” Oikawa sniffed, footsteps coming closingand Kageyama finally turned to face him. “Need help stretching?”
“I’m good,” Kageyama said, going back to reaching to histoes.
Oikawa sat down next to him, a bottle of pocari sweat settlingbetween them.
“Iwa-chan said I needed to thank you for the milk bread.”
“You’re welcome,” Kageyama mumbled, ignoring the petulanttone of his senpai. “I wasn’t sure which brand you liked so I just got themall.”
“Yet you managed not to get my favorite,” Oikawa snorted, rolling his eyes and brought his knees to his chest so he could rest his headon them. “How are you doing in school?”
“I’m only taking online classes so it’s not hard,” Kageyamasaid, bringing his feet together for a butterfly stretch. He turned to Oikawaand asked the same question back.
“It’s going good, not as easy as my second year but I’llmanage.”
Kageyama nodded and finished up his cool down, standing upand eyeing the water bottle.
“It’s for you,” Oikawa said, getting up from his weirdposition and lifted the bottle to the younger setter. “I figured you needed adrink.”
“Thanks.”
“You were really good today,” Oikawa said, his complimentsounding extra loud in the empty training room. “I couldn’t take my eyes offyou.”
“I feel the same,” Kageyama blurted, looking away anddowning half the bottle after that confession. “I mean, when you play. I don’tdare to look away.”
“I guess you haven’t changed from middle school in thataspect,” Oikawa said, smiling softly at him. “I acted pretty spoiled a couplegames ago. It was my fault for over practicing and messing up, I had no rightto treat you like you were the problem.”
“I understand,” Kageyama said, nodding along because thefrustration of being pulled from the game is something that he’ll never getused to. “Coach already told us that we’re going to be switchedindiscriminately in order to keep the other team on their toes. I don’t mind ifit’s you I get switched for.”
“Hah,” Oikawa huffed, crossing his arms. “Is that acompliment? I’m not sure what to take that as.”
“Take what you will,” Kageyama mumbled, rolling his eyes atOikawa’s puffed cheeks. “I’m going now. Goodnight Oikawa-senpai.”
-
Their qualifying game for the Olympic semi-finals was tense.Too much passion and nerves and mistakes made them the ones struggling to catchup. Kageyama was one of the youngest on the team and he could tell that thestress from his teammates was affecting him, his tosses too early and hisreceives too sloppy.
Being relieved for Oikawa should have left a bitter taste inhis mouth but as he watched his senpai go onto the court, hope filled his veinsthat if anyone could turn the game around, it was Oikawa.
They won. It wasn’t shocking. It wasn’t a terse affair ofrallies and crowd silencing spikes. It was an absolute dominance over thecourt, courtesy of Oikawa. Every toss, every receive, every pass was soaccurate to the point that their own teammates were shocked at the rate theywere gaining points.
Their win was enhanced by the screaming fans, the cheeringof their teammates, and the happy yelling from their coach. Kageyama got upfrom the bench grabbing Oikawa’s wrist as another teammate ruffled his hair.
“I knew you’d do it Senpai.”
Oikawa’s eyes widened before he broke out into laughing, covering his mouth as his teammates slapped his back and praised him.
“Thanks for holding out,” he replied, and Kageyama knew whathe meant.
“We still have more games until we can take home the goldmedal.”
Oikawa stopped covering his mouth and the rest of the teamquieted down after Kageyama’s reminder.
“Yeah we do.”
-
“Don’t get too cockyjust because you brought the gold medal home,” Oikawa said, handing Kageyama a rollof sports tape.
It was just the two of them in the locker room, the rest ofthe team already headed out to finish their interviews and head to the hotelwhere they would all leave together to go celebrate.
“It was a team effort Oikawa-senpai,” Kageyama said, notcaring that he hadn’t stop smiling since the ref declared their win. “Icouldn’t do it without you.”
“Pft, yeah right,” Oikawa teased, closing his bag as hewaited for Kageyama to finish up. “But in all seriousness, good job startingthe game and giving us the first set Tobio.”
Kageyama slowed down his application of sports tape on hisfingers at the usage of his first name without the annoying honorific. Hewanted to hear that again and again, the word sounding so different coming fromOikawa’s mouth than his friend’s or mother’s.
“One more time,” Kageyama requested as he stood up andstared intensely at his teammate.
“Good job?” He joked, eyebrows scrunched together inconfusion as to what Kageyama really wanted.
“My name.”
“Oh.”
Kageyama waited as Oikawa flushed slightly, looking away andrunning his hand through his hair, having slight difficulties due to the driedup sweat.
“You were absolutely amazing out there Tobio.”
Kageyama laughed slightly and looked away from the browneyes that seemed to glow under the fluorescent lighting. He focused on a waterbottle wrapper left under one of the benches as he thought of something to say.
“You were pretty great as well Tooru.”
The name slipped off his tongue, foreign and unsure, howeverOikawa seemed to take great delight in his kouhai’s attempt to close thedistance between them.
“Ah, aren’t we a little eager to start being familiar witheach other?” He teased, reaching out to ruffle the younger setter’s hair. “Comeon, the team is waiting.”
Kageyama lifted his bag on his shoulder and followed Oikawaout, heart beating fast and pink dusting the apples of his cheeks. Tooru, he mouthed, holding in a laugh ashis medal pressed against his chest.
