'Cause we need Indian Dark Academia (though this is more chaotic academia)
*Imagine sitting by window with a good book on Indian myths (krishna? ramayan?) ad draped in a good shawl while its raining outside
*Imagine browsing through you history and past on a wooden bench that belonged to your grandfather with your laptop and loads of old writings from your grandfather's notes wearing a woolen sweater
*Imagine getting annoyed by your uniform so yu try different haristyles and stickers(tikli) each time.
*Imagine getting tea in those tea cups from the tiny tea shop and going to a part watching kids play badminton and you can smell the dried leaves.
*Imagine wearing payal and long skirt with desi style blouse and having bangles along with a bag made from home as you go to a library but you need to be over 18 to borrow so you sit there and finish reading and its midnight by the time you are done so you run back home with messy notes and pen marks on your face.
*Imagine wanting to learn sanskrit or prakrit but hindi or telugu or your own mother tongue is enough of a headache as it is and your parents tell you to get good marks in those first so you pretend like you are learning sanskrit or prakrit while practicing for your tests.
*Imagine you have an exam tomorrow so you stay up till midnight thinking and dreaming of going to all these western dark academia themes and then think 'imagine if nalanda still existed' and an impromptu searching up which ends past midnight.
*Imagine you have strict parents so you write your boyfriend secrets letters since you can't meet him while trying to feel like a class heroine and behave pretentiously all day (bonus: parents get mad because you are searching for dark academia cloths but find none and end up with all these mismatched go on nothing ones)
*Imagine going to streetside stores and buying small trinklets from there because walking or going to shops isn't allowed all that much in your society
*Imagine going to the same old one local museum (for me Salar Jung ) so many times you can be appointed a tour guide at this point (bonus:making a list of all the other museums you wish and swear to yourself you will go to when you grow up and if lucky before)

The thing about being a single daughter in an Indian household is the constant helplessness you feel. My whole life I’ve had to hear every single relative tell my parents that they’re going to end up on their own as I anyways belong to someone else’s house. Every time I see my dad struggling to do heavy lifting jobs, but will not let me help, I’ve had to live with the disgusting feeling of being a pointless existence. For every minute of every day my parents spend worrying about the only daughters safety in this horrible world, I wish I was not who I was. Having to live with the fear I might not be able to be there for my aging parents because ultimately in a conservative society where I have to survive, a girl like me will always be someone else’s property. To watch your parents give their literal life towards fulfilling the one goal they think is the most precious of all- your marriage… it feels sickening, which I’m sure most of us desi girls feel constantly. The helplessness turns into anger. Anger at the injustice of this fucked up society and it’s norms, anger at my parents for believing in them and worse… for giving me the understanding of right and wrong only to then tell me shut up and adhere to the baseless and stupid rules. This anger eats away at any happiness, hope and fire I have in me. As each day goes by, I barely have the strength to breathe amidst this helplessness.

Quote
The discussions initiated by M.M. Thomas and P.D Devanandan in the late 1960s and the early 70s facilitated Indian Christians to relocate themselves into the modern ideological framework of a secular state. The article written by M.M. Thomas in 1967 entitled “The Christian Community in a Secular State” affirmed the role of Christian communities in building a secular-democratic nation in India. Christian role in envisaging a secular democratic state in India was thought out by M.M. Thomas and his colleagues even before it was added to the constitution of India in 1976. It is nothing but open secularism that ensures equal treatment to all religions and at the same time protects religions from becoming communal in content and practice. Critiquing the Brahminic content of Indian social values, Thomas urged Indian churches to engage with the ideals of Ambedkarism and become a de-casteist community in practice as a model to Indian society.

Independence
Tumblr media
I see everyone surrounding the flag pole,
Its independence!
Celebration is the mood around,
But I’m here,
In a place they call "my home",
Surrounding me are four walls
That feel like prison.
There are no iron-clad bars here,
But it is no less than a prison.
I can’t question,
Can’t raise my voice,
"Am a burden"
Is a constant alarm, I hear.
I’m beaten, raped, and tortured
I’m not meant for the greater things they say.
To serve and suffer is my destiny, I’m told.
So, I stay inside because that’s my place.
As I see everyone from the window,
A question lingers in my head,
Before fear can take charge, my mouth moves,
"Where’s my independence?", I ask,
But no one hears.
As the nation is free,
Shouldn’t all of us be too?
"Where is my independence?", I ask
But no one hears.

We are examples for our kids. They observe, they understand, they learn from us. We are responsible for raising a better society, a better world. Let's not fill their minds with toxicity. Treat them equal and tell them to treat others equal too. Not everything is based on gender and sexuality. Let's see a human first.

India, a land of rich traditions and diverse cultures, has long been bound by rigid gender roles and stereotypes. For centuries, these societal norms have shaped the lives of individuals, restricting their choices and limiting their potential. However, in recent years, there has been a growing movement towards breaking these stereotypes and shattering gender roles in Indian society. This blog explores the evolving landscape of gender roles and stereotypes in India and highlights the importance of challenging these notions to create a more inclusive and equitable society.

Book Review - The Bandit Queens by Parini Shroff
Link to other book review post masterlist.
Before getting to the actual review, though, let me preface this by saying there’s been a considerably long gap between when I finished reading this and when I’m posting this review.
Book description (taken from Goodreads):
Geeta’s no-good husband disappeared five years ago. She didn’t kill him, but everyone thinks she did–no matter how much she protests.
But she soon discovers that being…
