Aperçu of the Week:

Bad News of the Week:

It was such a beautiful idea that U.S. President Thomas Woodrow Wilson borrowed from philosopher Immanuel Kant and his visionary 1795 book, "To Perpetual Peace the Law of Nations" (1795!) to found the League of Nations. It then failed miserably because the USA, of all countries, did not join for domestic political reasons. So it was not an easy legacy that the "United Nations" took on during the last meters of the Second World War. And things did not get any better from then on.

From the very beginning, the construct suffered from compromise. This can be seen time and again in notable flops of the Security Council. Since in this five veto powers - which are far from being representative for the whole world - fight out ridiculous power games in a completely undemocratic way. Why is this possible? Unfortunately, the members (of the Security Council as well as of the entire UN) do not have a compatible social foundation. Their values do not have sufficient common ground.

Thus, it is only moderately surprising that two extremely important projects of the United Nations have failed spectacularly in recent days: the "UN Nuclear Weapons Conference" and the "UN High Seas Agreement" did not even manage to reach a joint final declaration, despite protracted negotiations. Even this mostly soft-washed minimum of consensus was drowned in a cacophony of vanities, retorts, recriminations and - yes, unfortunately - a lack of understanding of democracy.

Yet both projects could not be more important. The UN nuclear weapons conference is painstakingly keeping the planet from the brink of human self-destruction. And the High Seas Agreement should have saved two-thirds of the planet from the annihilation campaign of human self-destruction... Wait a minute. Do you notice something? Exactly: self-destruction is the sad common denominator that the uninspired whistles of world politics have to attach to themselves as a label. Because, again and again, they fail to overcome their ridiculous egos by comparison to the self-destruction of humanity. Thanks for nothing. At least there can be a residual hope in bilateral constructs that have to be lived and not just signed. To this we now come in the...

Good News of the Week:

"Bringing Europe's weight to bear" is a suitable headline for a keynote speech by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic, at the beginning of this week. For that is precisely what he calls for in his speech: a united, powerful Europe that uses its strength moderately but purposefully. For the good, of course. Which still requires various reforms, so that a type of Viktor Orban's caliber cannot paralyze the entire EU single-handedly. Not because there would be any fundamental differences, at least Hungary has benefited more than almost any other country from accession. But because he can.

Now, there is often talk of the end of the "American century" and the beginning of the Chinese one - depending on the historical interpretation, with the crossroads of the "911" terrorist attacks in 2001 or the election of Donald Trump as U.S. president in 2016. This refers to the international supremacy of a country, which manifests itself economically, militarily and culturally. A notion that cannot appeal to an earthling fortunate enough to live in a prosperous democracy. Unless one also brings the mentioned "weight of Europe" into the calculation.

Example population or internal market: the USA has 331 million inhabitants, the EU 447 million - for comparison China: 1,412 million.

Example economy: the U.S. accounts for 16.1% of global economic output (PPP), the EU 17.2% - for comparison China: 16.3%.

Example trade: the U.S. imported $3,387 billion worth of goods in 2021 and exported $2,526 billion. The EU imported $8,895 billion and exported $9,532 billion - compare China: import $1,550 billion and export $2,650 billion.

Example defense spending: the US spends $801 billion on it, the EU $249 billion - for comparison China: $293 billion.

Example investment in the future: the US has invested $308 billion in R&D, the EU $225 billion - for comparison China: $69 billion (The most recent figures I found are from 2017, all previously mentioned are from 2021).

So US and EU have much stronger potential together than alone. Not really an issue, since both are on compatible societal footing. So they can form a powerful duo, a kind of "brothers in arms" of values. Recent history in particular has taught us that "common ground" (from NATO to G7) is a valuable and highly functional asset for the benefit of all concerned. And thus ultimately can also prevent a worldwide dominance of a Chinese-influenced dystopia of lacking freedoms. This requires only two basic attitudes: the EU must unify, emancipate itself and develop a healthy self-image of its own power. And the USA must accept this power as a partner at eye level. And everything will be fine.

Personal happy moment of the week:

Finally it worked out. For two years, my son has wanted to go with a few friends to a monstrous water park in the northeast of Munich for his birthday - after all, it has the largest water slide complex in Europe. But then Corona came along. And bad grades. And an unwilling father. And Corona. And bad grades. But yesterday finally came, and I was able to bring a handful of boys back home in the evening after a long, sunny, wet day of action. Tired, but happy.

I couldn't care less...

...that the launch of NASA's Artemis rocket has been postponed - and with it the first step of the "Moon to Mars Mission". Because I don't really understand the benefit of searching for salvation in the vastness of the galaxy, when at the same time the home planet is plunged into the abyss in a self-destructive way. So please, dear mankind: please leave the other planets in peace. And listen to Jules Verne.

As I write this...

...I notice that the US Democrats are slowly waking up. The midterms are only a handful of weeks away - so it's normal to start campaigning. Typically, Democrats don't make an excessive amount of noise doing this - don't polarize, don't pander, don't polemicize, don't attack. Which I've never understood, since Republicans do just that enough. But this time, factual argumentation, bridge-building, reconciliation, and the famous "reaching across the aisle" are left out. First, the White House countered attacks by the usual GOP loudspeakers like Marjorie Taylor Green or Matt Gaetz on the forgiven university loans of poorer students with a successful social media campaign that highlighted that it was precisely these Republicans who benefited from even significantly higher debt forgiveness during the Corona crisis. And now Joe Biden himself also unpacked coarser cutlery and harshly attacked Donald Trump (who still hasn't officially entered the next presidential race) and his supporters, calling them "extremists" and "semi-fascists." The games are on.

Post Scriptum:

Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev is dead. That for which he stood, unfortunately, for some time. For Vladimir Putin has permanently reversed all of Gorbachev's ideals and visions, commonly known as glasnost and perestroika. For us Germans, however, Gorbachev is a saint ("Gorbimania"). For he not only ended the Cold War, but also made the reunification of Germany possible. This legacy will remain forever.

Hi anon! Thanks for the ask. Sorry this got really long, but you did give the question and this is my answer that I hope you’ll consider:

I guess the ‘Toga Should Die’ opinion depends whether you think it’s okay to let a legal minor/child (she’s 17 years old, age of adulthood is 20 years old in Japan, she can’t be tried in adult court; even if we use 18 years old as the line, she’s still younger than that, and in Japanese law, no person under 18 years of age can receive a death penalty) get killed whether directly or indirectly without trying one’s best and exhausting all other options, and only as an ultimate last resort. I dunno about you, but I think Heroes can manage that. You’re telling me there’s absolutely no Hero in Japan that can defeat and capture a 17-year-old girl that’s often just armed with a knife? Even if she currently has Twice’s power, I think it’s still possible to circumvent that and capture her alive.

I don’t doubt that could happen - her dying - but that’d be a tragedy, not justice, because again, she’s a 17 year old minor that’s been homeless since 15 years old and the fact she hasn’t been found and arrested and given help is on the Heroes for their gross incompetency. Her death could not be right in any sense of the word because a society where a child must be killed instead of being safely subdued and helped and protected, is a broken society that has completely failed its duties, probably by being unable to accept any criticism over the past 100+ years as well as neglecting and allowing harm to come to its people.

If Toga dies, then it’s like basically saying it’s okay to allow Heroes to let a child to get killed because they can’t be bothered to enforce human rights correctly. I would consider that an atrocious crime that Hero Society will have to face responsibility for after they’ve ‘won’ the war.

Why do you think Toga is beyond saving anyways? What makes you think a 17-year-old kid with a still developing brain; who has shown clear signs of empathy, regret, and willingness to talk to someone for advice about her internal conflicts so that it’s entirely possible to give her therapy that can help her cope with compulsions and avoid maladaptive behaviors and clear the way to an understanding of herself and the things she did wrong; who managed to control herself for 15 years without any support from parents who either at best was so detached from her that they didn’t notice she bites herself hard enough to draw blood, and at worst just straight up knew but didn’t bother to get her help; who’s main motivations in life is to 1) make the world easier to live in (suggesting that accommodations and support can help with just that) and 2) find connection, love, acceptance, and trust from others (even if they are her enemies); what makes you think she’s beyond help?

Especially when no one has even tried to work with her?

It’s true she is part of a terrorist cell and she didn’t like it when people say she can’t live as she pleases (committing crime); it’s just personally I don’t think that warrants the death penalty, especially for a kid, especially if she can be captured without killing her and then be given help. I don’t think the next 50+ years of her life should be taken away without trying to turn those decades into something beneficial to the world.

You’re speaking of fairness. ‘It’s not fair if she lives. It’s only fair that she dies.’

I admit I don’t know if it’s fair or not. Fair to who? Fair based on what factors? How do you measure that, and how to balance the scale? By the amount of suffering? Lives lost? Futures?

I don’t think it’s fair that Toga is a homeless teenager, disowned by her parents, abandoned by society, having to learn how to fight and survive on the streets, feeling like Heroes and police might just kill her if they ever catch her - and how this was all preventable if she got proper care from social services, which apparently don’t exist or they do exist but have failed.

I think it’s even more unfair that a child can experience this in a world where there is a Hero school that apparently have funds in the millions; where a revenge-seeking student can go rogue to attempt murder but gets off because the police chief is willing to bend the rules for him, thus preventing him from falling further into a bad situation; where these students can call themselves Heroes helping the common people when they live on a massive campus that’s fortified by a high tech wall so they’re basically in an ivory tower without lacking for food, housing, education, and safety and ultimately cut off from ever thinking about those who fall through the cracks of society, whose success is dependent on beating up these exact people that fell through the cracks.

Do I think the scales are balanced because Toga at least finally got to experience some happiness while in the League? No. Do I think the scales are balanced because Toga’s misfortune is now everyone’s misfortune as well? Also no. Do I think another set of scales will be balanced because Toga’s one life can make up for, let’s say, the hundred lives she took? No, that’s hardly fair to those surviving families, but it’s not like they can have Toga executed 100 times.

I don’t think we can solely speak of fairness. It’s part of whatever this HeroAca theme is, but not the whole thing. HeroAca is about saving people and giving them second chances, about making a better world and brighter future, about acceptance and bonds, rejecting nihilism and ostracism. It’s about avoiding fatalism and falling into the trap of believing there’s no hope/future/help for someone, so why bother trying?

You can think Toga is beyond saving and that she deserves to die, but I think you should consider why you think this death sentence as punishment for Toga Himiko - an admittedly dangerous 17-year-old girl that society failed and now lashing out, but likely can be defeated non-fatally, then helped and healed into a better person - is a righteous thing, and if that’s the solution this HeroAca world needs and will pave way for a more just world.

Better Than Revenge, Chapter 1 (Multi) - Joley

Jan put her hands on the back of Jackie’s chair, trying to read over her shoulder as if it would help one way or another. “Still looking into the Sarah Jones case?” she asked, resting her chin on the top of Jackie’s head.

If it were anyone else, Jackie would’ve shooed them away, but she didn’t have it in her to deny Jan’s presence. “Just about finished,” she assured. “It seems pretty cut and dry, the court case is well-documented. It’s yet another instance of a straight, white boy getting off with a slap on the wrist. Did ninety days in jail and another month of community service. Sarah came to the right people.”

“She getting any restitution?”

“Not a dime,” she shook her head and clicked her tongue in disapproval, then turned to face her. “Are you taking on this one?”

Jan looked over her shoulder into the other room. “Nah, Gigi’s on this one, I have a few cases to follow up on.”

There was a beat of silence where Jan was unaware of Jackie’s internal debating before finally asking, “so, you think you’ll be free tonight?”

She bit her lip, a smirk twitching at the corner. “You missing me in your bed already?”

Jackie turned around in her chair, looking up at Jan. “You’re a cocky little brat, aren’t you?” she teased.

Jan braced her hands on either arm of Jackie’s chair. “But am I wrong?”

“I can’t really argue when I’m eye-level with your tits.”

“Well, I–” her retort was cut off by an alarm on her phone going off. “Ah, fuck, my three o’clock case is gonna be here any minute now. I’ll be in my office if you need me, gorge,” she winked before turning on her heel and making her way down the hall.

Jackie turned back to her desk, exhaling deeply as she allowed her heart a chance to return to its normal rate. But it wasn’t long before she sensed that once again, she wasn’t alone, and groaned. “Don’t say it.”

“She has you whipped,” Nicky observed matter-of-factly. “It would be cute if you weren’t such a stubborn bitch about it.”

She rolled her eyes. “I’m an Aries. Stubborn bitch is my default setting. Ask Denali, she can vouch for that.”

Nicky furrowed her brows. “Where is Denali anyway? She left before noon to meet with a new client, she’s usually back by now.”

“I’m sure she’s fine,” Jackie assured, “she knows how to take care of herself.” Before they could question her whereabouts any further, her office phone began to ring. “Let me take this,” she said before answering in her ‘business voice’, “Karma Inc, Jackie speaking. How may I help you?”

It wasn’t uncommon for Denali or the others to make house calls for consultations. Oftentimes, someone’s privacy or safety could be at stake. So, she didn’t bat an eye as she made her way to the address listed in the email. But when she saw that she was at a scarcely used office building, her suspicions grew.

With her hand on her taser, Denali cautiously entered the building and looked around. The email said to wait in the lobby – not that she planned to wander around.

“Denali?”

The voice startled her from her thoughts and she turned to see where it was coming from. She then saw a tall woman with auburn hair and pale skin approach her. “You’re Rosé?”

“That’s me,” she confirmed before leading Denali into an empty office. “Listen, this is going to sound like bullshit, but I have a case for your organization. It’s of critical importance and could be huge for you guys as well.”

Denali’s brows furrowed as she eyed her suspiciously. “Who are you, exactly?”

Rosé strummed her fingers against the desk. “I’m a former detective and–”

“Hey, what we’re doing is completely legal!” she cut in, eyes narrowing in a glare. This wasn’t the first time she felt inclined to defend what her group did. What she considered their group was an ethical version of mercenaries (which may seem like an oxymoron, but that was beside the point).

They pick up where law enforcement, the justice system, or even society itself failed. When someone came to them seeking revenge on someone that wronged them, they took it seriously. The vetting process that Jackie would put each case through could take days depending on the circumstance. Bottom line, their goal was to help people who had exhausted their options and she would be damned if she let some cop get in the way of that. “If this is some sort of sting, I’ll have you know I have an attorney and I won’t–”

“This isn’t a sting,” she replied calmly. “I’ve seen the justice system fail far too many people to stay within it. That was why I left, but I have unfinished business. There are people out there that have hurt others that’ll never see justice and could cause even more harm. That’s where you and your associates come in.”

Denali went from defensive to intrigued in a second flat. “So, you want us to give the victims some closure by hunting down criminals? And do what, specifically? Because a lot of what we do doesn’t cause long-term damage… physical damage, anyway.”

Rosé grinned. “That’s where I team up with you guys. I can arrange for Karma Inc. to have the proper training you would need to be at the level of effectiveness we would need here.”

“We?”

“I have been working closely with some of the victims of the people we’re after. This isn’t going to be easy, but from what I understand, I’ve come to the right place.”

Denali strummed her fingers against the desk as she mulled it over. She would need to run it by the rest of the group, but she couldn’t fathom them not being on board. That’s why they had come together – to right wrongs in ways only they were able to. “You certainly have.”

“This is exciting!” Jan chirped, bouncing a bit in her seat. “We’re gonna be like actual crime fighters now. Think of all the things we’ll be able to do once we have all the skills for it! Maybe we should get matching leather jackets or something.”

“Take a breath, Bubbles,” Mik chuckled, then turned his attention back to Denali. “So, tell us about this detective.”

A slight smile tugged at the corner of Denali’s lips and she began absentmindedly twirling her hair around her finger as she spoke. “She’s like six foot, auburn hair, beautiful blue-green eyes, big ti-”

“That is not what he meant, you horny dumbass,” Symone cut in. “Also, I’m pretty sure you just described Jolene, like, from the song.”

“Hey!” Denali pouted, then tilted her head in thought. “Actually, now that you mention it…”

Gigi pinched the bridge of her nose. “Focus, Denali. Please just tell me you handled yourself professionally and weren’t staring at her ‘eyes’.”

“Give me some credit here, Jesus,” she rolled her eyes. “I was fine, I wouldn’t volunteer for something just to appease a pretty face. I take this shit just as seriously as the rest of you.” Once she’d taken a breath to refocus herself, she continued. “She’ll be coming over tomorrow to meet with us, then once we work out the details, we’re gonna get started on combat training. Well, you guys will,” she smirked at the last part.

“Lest we ever forget your black belt,” Nicky chimed in. “Did you brag to her about that?”

Denali scoffed. “I prefer the element of surprise, thank you very much.”

Nicky shrugged. “You’re welcome.”

As much as the group liked to joke around with each other, the seriousness of their new mission never left their minds. They enjoyed their work, but they took everything seriously. It was people’s lives, their mental and physical health. It was their safety and their future and they knew how much power and responsibility came with their mercenary work. But it fulfilled each of them in their own way - they didn’t end up doing this by accident, after all.

And they all made their feelings clear when they spoke to Rosé. Denali had texted her the address of their headquarters and led her inside to their main meeting room. “Everyone, this is Rosé. Rosé, this is Nicky, Symone, Mik, Jan, Gigi, we’re the mercenaries. And this is Jackie; she does all of the research, tech, paperwork… basically, the glue that holds us together.”

“I’m very excited to meet you all,” Rosé replied in greeting, clasping her hands together. “I know this may seem like a heavy task, I promise it’ll be worth it.”

“I’ve got a question,” Symone chimed in. “I saw the numbers you sent us. Who, exactly, is funding this endeavor?”

“It was somewhat of a crowdfunding endeavor,” Rosé explained. “But it turned into something much bigger. The community of people affected by the people we’re tracking down is dedicated and pulled in resources almost in excess. Rest assured, we can live up to those numbers.”

The answer satisfied Symone, who nodded in acceptance. “Alright,” she cracked her knuckles, “what’s the next step from here?”

Rosé’s face cracked into a grin. “From here, we get you guys into training. I have a combat specialist and range master on standby to help you guys prepare for as many possible scenarios as we could think of. This will take some time, so we’ll work with your schedules.”

“I’ll email you that,” Jackie nodded. “The rest of the day is open if you guys want an introductory session or something.”

They all looked at each other, slowly nodding before Jan, speaking for the group, said “we’re in, let’s at least get a taste of what’s to come.”

“We don’t need to know what you and Jackie are doing tonight, babe,” Gigi teased, earning a glare in response.

After that, the group took the twenty-minute drive to the private gym they would be training in. It was spacious and clean, not having an overabundance of exercise equipment. Most noticeably, there was a boxing ring towards the back of the space. “Any of you guys ever box before?” Mik asked casually.

Most of them shook their heads, save for Symone who shrugged, “a little bit in college.” She looked over at Denali, “what, you aren’t secretly a heavyweight champion on top of your blackbelt?”

“No, but I’m a fast learner,” Denali retorted, brushing her hair off her shoulder.

“Mercenaries,” Rosé redirected everyone’s attention. “This is Jaida, military trained in hand-to-hand combat. There’s no one I’d trust more to whip you all into shape.”

While most of the group had reactions ranging from neutral to excited, Nicky looked like she had just seen a ghost. Her eyes went wide, her face paled, the beating of her heart drowned out anything else Rosé was saying. There was no way, she thought. It had to be a coincidence – the universe doesn’t just align like that in real life.

But if Jaida shared those sentiments, she didn’t let them show – something that went hand-in-hand with military training, no doubt. Though it seemed that she was actively not looking at Nicky, her unwaveringly stoic expression seemed focused to her left, where Jan, Mik, and Denali were. “Alright,” she said once Rosé had finished her introductory speech, “I’m gonna work with each of y’all one-on-one to get a read on your skill level,” she looked the line-up over and tilted her head. “I’ll take the ginger one first, the rest of you start warming up.”

While Gigi left with Jaida, Jan turned to Nicky with a concerned expression. “You okay? You look kinda… sick. Do you want some water or something?”

“I’m not sick,” she assured, but let Jan lead her off to the side anyway. “I just think I might be going a bit crazy.” There was hesitation as she worked herself up to being honest – this was Jan, if there was anyone she could confide in, it would be her. “The instructor. She looked familiar… like the girl. You know, the girl.”

Jan’s expression went from confusion to wide-eyed realization over the course of the next few seconds. “Oh my gosh, her? Are you sure?”

Nicky shook her head. “I do not think I can be… she didn’t react at all. But she might just have a hard façade. I am sure the military helped with that.”

“What’re you gonna say when it’s your turn?”

“What can I say?”

Jan pressed her lips together as she wracked her brain, only to come up empty. “I don’t know,” she sighed. “I get it, this is a lot to process at once, especially if she is who you think she is. Maybe don’t even bring it up yet if you’re not ready.”

Nicky sighed, resting her head against the wall. “I guess that’s the best option,” she agreed halfheartedly.

By the time it was Nicky’s turn, her nerves had subsided. Whatever Jaida’s reaction to her was, she was sure she could handle it. “Hi. Um, I’m Nicky and–”

Jaida cut her off by firmly cupping her face and kissing her hard and for as long as her lungs would allow. “You fuckin’ think I wouldn’t recognize you? Come on, Nicky.”

It took a moment for Nicky’s brain and mouth to reconnect, for her head to stop spinning. “It’s been fifteen years,” she whispered in her weak defense. “I didn’t think… I never thought…”

“Neither did I,” she assured gently. “But here we are. We can talk later, we gotta get this assessment done before Rosé bitches at me.”

It had taken another few days for the details surrounding the first case to come together, and it would take longer than that for it to be put into action. But as it progressed, they all became more and more invested, and Rosé was thrilled to see her ideas, her seemingly far-fetched concepts, starting to take form.

“I’ve been working with one of the victims for this case very closely, I think it’s important to have someone like her on board,” she was explaining. “Mik,” she prompted, “I want your job in this to be working with her, I think you’ll handle that best.”

Mik tilted his head. “Sure, but based on what?”

Rosé shrugged. “Being a detective, you pick up on the ability to read people, you know, get a sense of their personalities. I think yours will balance with hers, and that’s going to be a necessity.”

“Believe it or not, one thing we’ve learned doing this is empathy. Not that we weren’t before, but this shit like, really bonds you with people,” Mik remarked.

“Definitely,” Jan agreed, “I’ve made connections with people through the process of getting them their revenge that I’ll have forever.”

Denali nodded, “I got invited to a client’s wedding. Honestly, I forgot she even hired us, I just see her as my friend now.”

Rosé beamed broadly as she listened to their anecdotes. This was what she had hoped to find in her previous career, to help people that needed it and solve problems. She wanted to connect to her community even when she was rather high-ranking. But it ended in frustration and hurt time and time again. Part of her almost envied the gang, how they had managed to achieve this all on their own. More than anything, however, she was happy to see it happening. “Can I ask you guys something? How did this happen? Like, what inspired you guys to come together to create this enterprise?”

“We’ve all got our backstories, gorge,” Mik chuckled dryly. “Took a while for us to all find each other, but we all had that in common.”

“What, that you all took revenge in your own lives?”

All of them nodded in confirmation. “You gotta start somewhere, right?” Jan hummed.

Rosé leaned forward in interest. “So… Can I hear them? Your stories?”

The group exchanged glances with each other, then nodded. “Buckle up, Detective,” Gigi warned, “this is going to be one hell of a history lesson.”

Downbelow Station, a fanfic summary

I’ve been writing fic for this tiny book fandom and have at least a few fandom acquaintances who want to read my fic but don’t want to read the book. This is a summary of what happens in the novel, whose heart, to me, is the relationship between a mindwiped ex-slave and a cross-cultural married couple who take him in under their protection.

The premise

People are in space, since the Earth Company started establishing space stations around increasingly distant stars for manufacturing/trade. There are several types of people:

Stationers stay on one station – stations were originally established by the Earth Company but have since gained de facto independence because Earth is so far away

Merchanters live on ships and trade – family very important to them, so is family name, regularly deal with Stationers as part of their life but find settling down very foreign. More sexually opportunistic than Stationers, possibly less monogamous.

Earth Company Fleet soldiers live on ships; originally under the control of Earth Company, as of novel start have gone kind of rogue, will continue to go even more rogue over the course of the novel

Citizens of Union, a... nation in space that grew in the deepest reaches, furthest away from Earth's influence. Union is currently trying to annex everyone else. Earth Company is trying to resist this through their Fleet. However, Earth Company is not very enthusiastic about this war and have been drawing out; the Fleet thinks it's important to keep fighting and keep doing dipshit moves like impressing Merchanter ships and ?? maybe looting stations a little bit to keep going.

Azi of Union – a genetically engineered underclass specific to Union. Basically designer subs. I believe the word azi is never brought up in Downbelow Station, but it's very clear a character is an azi, and what that means is explained in Cyteen, which takes place in the same universe. Union citizens use 'tapes' casually and at-will for fast learning and entertainment and conditioning, but starting later in life. Azi grow up on tape – their psyches are designed to be good at whatever they were designed to do, whether that's soldiering or psychologizing or childcare. Azi require varyingly regular check-ins with a Supervisor, who is an assigned person who tells the azi they are Very Good and On Course With Their Lives and give them tapes to keep them aligned with their values and mentally stable. Azi have normal human names but also an ID that looks like AO-1234, where the first alphabet character indicates what ‘class’ you are – an Alpha-class azi is probably far smarter than your average citizen and is more capable of functioning independently. Azi can win citizenship, but so far the only people onscreen who’ve done so are Alpha-class azi.

The cast

Damon Konstantin is a head of Legal Affairs on Pell Station, and the son of the Stationmaster, which is apparently a hereditary position. Despite the hereditariness Pell seems to have the most familiar culture to me, a 21st century American expecting democracy and rule of law. Pell Station is special – it orbits a human-livable planet called Downbelow, and there are only three such planets under human control. This means the planet can be used as a base for ‘bioform production’ (a vague category encompassing everything you can grow on a planet but not a space station) and makes Pell strategically valuable. The other two livable planets are Earth, under the control of the Earth Company Fleet’s nominal masters, and Cyteen, the base of Union operations. Pell is neutral, as many star stations try to be.

Elene Quen is a Merchanter who stepped off her ship to marry Damon. They’ve been married for four months at novel start. Her formal role is liaison with Merchanters.

Joshua Talley is a soldier of Union who was captured when Union forces sabotaged (blew up) a station called Mariner Station. He was tortured for information on another station – Russell’s – whose inhabitants feared the same fate for themselves. He had nothing to give them – he was a medium-level technician/soldier, an ‘armscomper’, which I think means he was the person pressing buttons to fire on targets or programming the weapons to fire on targets. During his interrogation Russell’s station was also sabotaged, ensuing in a mass evacuation.

Signy Mallory is one of the ~10 captains of the Earth Company Fleet. She is commanding and very deadly, commands fanatical loyalty from her soldiers. She’s also a sexual sadist. When she comes to evacuate Russell’s Stationers from a failing space station she finds that they have a Union POW who is very pretty, and takes him into her personal quarters for their journey to Pell. It is not said how she rapes him but it was a lot. Joshua thinks of this part as worse than the previous interrogation.

The events from there

When the Fleet arrives at Pell Station, they are convoying huge ships full of thousands of refugees from stations sabotaged / fallen to Union. It has been weeks or months since they started out. The ships were overpacked, many inside are dead, the culture of the ships has quickly turned anarchic/violent.

Angelo Konstantin, master of Pell, says "wtf, we can't take all these people, we don't have space. We literally cannot do this." The Fleet says, “You better,” unloads the highly upset and sick refugees, and leaves. Pell Station clears out two sectors of their station and makes it the 'quarantine zone', later shortened to Q. Conditions are very bad in Q and what to do with the violent, desperate people inside, many of whom cannot prove who they were in their past lives, when Pell doesn’t have the capacity to relocate them, is an ongoing problem throughout the novel.

Before leaving, Signy Mallory also said, "in addition to the refugee crises we unloaded on you, here is a Union prisoner of war we transported separately because the refugees would have killed him", and dumps Joshua on Pell leadership.

Around this time, Elene Quen finds out that her ship was destroyed when Mariner Station blew up. She now has no blood family, and Merchanters put great cultural emphasis on having clan and name. She decides to have a kid, talking Damon into it.

Joshua Talley is extremely depressed and keeps asking for a mindwipe so he can live as a normal citizen on Pell rather than being indefinitely detained. Mindwipes are used on stations as a consensual way of rehabilitating criminals. His captors are reluctant – it’s tantamount to execution. Damon Konstantin is the final permission-giver on the issue and gives it in the end. The process of mindwipe (or Adjustment) necessarily causes the person to regurgitate their whole life. This is recorded. Due to this, he discovers only after the mindwipe is complete that Josh was tortured on Russell’s with mindwipe drugs (presumably for the same regurgitating-your-whole-life property) and then raped on Signy Mallory’s ship on the way to Pell, and that wanting to wipe out the trauma was the real reason he wanted a mindwipe.

Damon feels really bad about this. He checks up on Josh Talley a lot when he's recovering from the mindwipe. He and his wife Elene decide to 'sponsor' him when he's rejoining normal society on the ship. Elene does so through some personal resistance – Josh once belonged to the military force that wiped out her family. They check in with a guy who doesn’t remember much of anything but definitely has abandonment issues and is afraid of emotional entanglement with people.

Josh Talley quietly converts much of his internal body mass into gooey loyalty.

Plot chaos. The station comes to be formally occupied by the Fleet, who wants to use it as their new base of operations, and a Union saboteur named Gabriel who talks to Stationmaster Angelo Konstantin’s main rival and conspires to bring him to power instead...

There’s a part I really really want to summarize here where Josh tries to fall on grenade for the Quen-Konstantins – literally, trying to take an action that would end in his death but keep them safe from the Fleet – and they show up and say “you idiot, never do that again” and bring him back to their apartment and say “while the Fleet is suspicious of you, you are living HERE, so everyone knows you are under our protection. Forget your old job, we’ll find you something working closely with Damon every day – while you’re in sight they can’t get at you.” But I can’t find a non-confusing way to relay it, sorry.

Soon after that, the Union saboteur succeeds. Angelo Konstantin is assassinated. His rival, Jon Lukas, takes his place, and starts enacting subtly Union-friendly policies. I think this somehow happens concurrently with the Fleet still using Pell as a base of operations. It’s highly chaotic. Elene flees the chaos on a Merchanter ship whose family she knows. Damon and Josh, fearing whoever assassinated Angelo, hide within the more bad and chaotic parts of the station (I honestly don’t believe the author when she says they managed this for months – Pell has tens of thousands of people, that’s not a lot! You could close each sector at a time and sweep everyone!). This part feels like big missed opportunity to me – they spend their time moving from hiding place to hiding place, coming up with hopeless schemes that they know they’ll never enact. One infers they got much closer, but the author doesn’t go into that either. The one delight that comes out of this sequence is that Josh becomes more assertive and competent than we’ve ever seen him – being in hiding, under danger, brings out submerged training. He’s not a dependent anymore – arguably in some places he’s in lead.

In the middle of this, Josh makes contact with the Union saboteur, Gabriel, who hails him as a colleague and informs him that they’re of the same kind. They have the same training. The story Josh gave Russell’s interrogators, and Pell, that he was a mid-tier technician, is an implanted set of memories that automatically flushes his real ones when he was under duress.

This means, although the author never explores it, that Josh was probably integral to destroying Mariner Station, and concomitantly responsible for Elene’s family’s deaths.

Josh asks Gabriel for safe passage to the planet Downbelow for both himself and a companion. Gabriel acquiesces, but is shocked when the companion Josh brings to the meeting is the Konstantin heir. He starts to say, “Well, well, what a useful person you have brought me –” and then gets shot by a Fleet soldier who’s following reports of a suspicious person. (My fic Half-Silvered Mirror diverges from canon at this point, and asks what would have happened if Gabriel had his way.)

Now in the hands of the Fleet, Josh and Damon meet with Signy Mallory again. Josh isn’t what Mallory remembers – as a rape victim he was passive, inward-turned. This Josh is articulate and emotional and loyal. Damon isn’t what she expects, either – he manages to jab at her conscience about what the Fleet has become, lawless and unmoored from any democratic interest. She plans to execute both of them the next day.

Due to convoluted plot reasons, she doesn’t. She turns against the rest of the Fleet, which for their own reasons is headed back towards Earth – to conquer. Her ship, Norway, enters a standoff against Union warships over Pell. Which isn’t on course to go well for her, until someone broadcasts at both of them that Pell is now under Merchanter claim. Elene, while out in space, has been convincing Merchanters to form an unprecedented coordination bloc. She demands Pell for the Merchanter Alliance and informs the Union military leader, Azov, that if he doesn’t acquiesce all Merchanter ships in her fleet will refuse to trade in Union space.

She wins. The scene when she docks at Pell and walks in, pregnant and victorious, to kiss her husband, is one of the most visually !!! scenes.

In the aftermath, Azov tries to take Josh back for Union. Damon says nope, he’s ours. Josh, what do you want? Josh says nothing. Looks at nothing. But when Azov and the other Union soldiers leave, he stays.

And afterwards, he goes to Signy Mallory – whose ships now constitute Pell’s militia – and asks, sincerely, to work as crew on her ship for a while. He says he can’t live on a station comfortably. That the stationers know him, and his past. (Not sure how true this is.) Mallory says it’s nothing another mindwipe can’t cure, and he says he doesn’t want to forget. “I’ve got something. The only real thing. All that I value.”

“So you go off and leave it?”

“For a while.”

Did Elene know when Josh left that he was probably responsible for her family’s death? (My fic Awarding Damages is about one way they could resolve this)

What did Signy Mallory do to Josh? Can he handle working under her?

Damon and Elene are so parental to Josh, and they're also embarking on having a family in a dynastic way where having a clan is their way of asserting that they exist and are rooted in the world. And of course Josh is going to feel really weird about how he fits into that – he's only watching it happen because he's a charity case, of course he's going to have no involvement in that project – what place is left for him anyway, he has no one and is nothing. I want this man to have feelings about family and how he doesn't have one and then HAVE A FAMILY I want him to hold the baby and go "OH. You are a biological composite of the two greatest people in the world. I cannot hold it against you that you are now going to push me out of my current living situation with the two greatest people in the world"

Due to the amount of mindfuckery Josh has gone through, it’s unclear to both him and the reader how many his memories are real. What does that do to a person?

From what I know of azi from Cyteen, Josh has psychological needs – again, he’s like a bred sub – that non-Unioners aren’t going to understand. Can he get them met? How does he negotiate that?

reading the chimeric horde cosmetics descriptions, i can’t help but imagine talbot wrote julie off as ‘incapable of communication’ , when in reality she was just super pissed (and in pain. and disoriented.) and Didnt Really Feel Like Answering. do u have any headcannons on how they function (or at least try to handle being That)

Sorry I’m answering this so late. There’s not a proper term for how much last week handed me not my ass but my biological system as a whole.

This is a super interesting question though!

I think it’s possible Julie, Joey, and/or Susie can still talk, although god knows how their biological body is comprised now and where vocal chords ended up--or even if Frank, who got least mutated, still has his. It’s interesting, initially when I saw this skin, it made me think I was wrong about my interpretation of Legion (which is that all four share a ‘body’, kind of. As in they have one form, but like a shape shifter can swap between any of their four. Although their consciousness goes with their own body--kind of like the initial release picture for Darkness Among Us implies, with the reflections? With all of them being present as individuals with autonomy /internally/, and able to communicate with each other even when they don’t have the body, but like, only one at a time being able to actually visibly exist and speak in a way someone in the room with them could hear), but looking at it again now, it actually reinforces it in my heart. Because of the way they’re melded together. It’s like a scientific conservation of mass law thing--their body is roughly the size it has always been as Frank. Whereas, if, say, four autonomous bodies were meshed together, you’d get a big flesh pile much larger. There’s just no other way, without actively destroying matter, for that combination to go, speaking to laws of basic physics. So how they look makes a lot more sense for them being basically forced to lose control of how they transform/being able to do it, and into a distorted form that is agonizing where parts of them all exist at once, but only one has control, and they can no longer shift. That actually makes the description of Joey trying to cut himself free make sense more to me too, and him losing control to Frank’s arm. Totally canon might go the other way, but I like that, and it’s what makes sense to me!

For my personal headcanons, I do have them! I think Frank can talk normally, although he’s in immense pain, so like, with that added difficulty, but his throat is fine. I think the other three can make sounds, but would struggle to form actual words. Probably could if they tried really hard, especially Julie, but it would probably be a really pitiful and broken, “..P..lea..se. ..H...el..p” or whimpering sounds or, “No,” “..S..top,” or “Frank,” that kind of stuff. I think All of them including Frank hate it and are in misery. Frank definitely ended up the dominant/in control of the four, but I don’t think he did it in a ‘fuck you I’m not losing’ way to the other four at all. The Legion care about each other, whatever their many other faults, and I’ve always HC’d Frank feels responsible for his group even when they’re pissing him off, and would not try to do anything to hurt them/works to protect them.

I think what Talbot did to them fucked them up and their powers up horrifically, and that they can still talk mentally to each other okay, but that they can’t at first. That a lot of wires got crossed and damage taken, and for a while, Frank just can’t hear them at all no matter how much he pleads or looks for them or tries to listen, and he’s terrified it’s always going to be that way. And then after a few days, Julie struggles her way into connecting to him mentally again and he’s so relieved he breaks down. Joey and Susie figure it out after a little too, Susie last, and pitifully brokenly. I think they all have intense PTSD from this and are both terrified and broken, and furious with Talbot and want to kill him, and before that, to force him to fix them. They cope with being in agony and their trauma by formulating a plan and promising each other they’ll find a way to undo this. Probably they call to the Entity for help too, but I don’t think it helps them. I HC that after making him a killer, the Entity sends other killers to Talbot for punishment sometimes, and that’s probably what happens to Legion. They have the belief it won’t leave them like this forever as a kind of light at the end of the tunnel, but they’re not planning on waiting either.

All of them are in incredible pain constantly, and miserable. Frank tries to keep them calm by convincing them of ways they can make Talbot fix them. It’s kind of the only thing getting them to be able to cope. They can’t stand to look at themselves, so after looking in a mirror once to try to understand the damage, Frank completely avoids looking at any reflective surface, and if he ever does on accident, it fucks him up. I mean, pain aside, the level of horrific bodyhorror all four of them have undergone is enough to put a crack in anyone’s brain, to say the least. I think Frank works really hard to support and comfort the other three constantly outside trials, since while he’s not remotely in a good place, he’s in a better one than they are, and feels responsible. The other three need and depend on that. Joey copes by completely believing Frank’s promises and trying to help, Susie tries to just shut down and go to sleep as much as she can and not be there, and Julie copes by dissociating as much as humanly possible from what happens. Frank I guess copes with the mom-friend/fuck we’re in a crisis I literally can’t fail override. But he’s not doing very well at all.

When they’re in trials, Frank tries to play their appearance off as scary and threatening, and seem not remotely worried. This mostly works, because you know, the survivors are a bunch of traumatized and abused murder on repeat victims. But one time in a trial he’s chasing someone and knocks into them to throw them on the ground, and their medkit flies open, and he’s suddenly looking down on a reflective surface, seeing himself, grafted faces of his friends in agony trapped inside him on his chest, Julie’s hair hanging by his neck, his own eyes and mouth pouring orange puss. And he knows he has no idea how to fix it or if he ever will and just has something inside him snap and falls to his knees totally out of it for a second, finally overwhelmed by too much he’s been trying to carry alone. And it’s been long enough that Jeff’s figured out who the four of them are, and tried and failed to reach out to them before, but he sees that. Maybe he’s the person on the ground, maybe he’s coming to help them. But he sees it and instead of being smart and jumping Frank in the moment of opportunity, because he’s Jeff he tries to talk to him. And because he’s finally so broken he can’t take it and it’s the only person in the entirety of what he has left of a world that Frank trusts even the tiniest bit, he doesn’t stab him. He just breaks down.

“I was gonna leave The Week In Tory until Friday the 2nd October but at their current rate it'll be very long by then, and I'm worried about you, mate.

It's OK to get drunk on at 5pm on Monday the 28th of September, isn't it? Well, that's my recommendation anyway. Here goes...

1. In June UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said to Black Lives Matter protestors: “I hear you”, and acknowledged the “incontrovertible, undeniable feeling of injustice” that “we simply cannot ignore”

So obviously, 40 Tory MPs refused to take part in unconscious bias training

2. The government shut pubs an hour early, seemingly under the impression coronavirus (an inert, sub-microscopic infectious entity with no brain or nervous system) can tell the time.

The government demanded we all follow the rules

The government exempted House Of Commons bars from the rules

3. Health Minister Helen Whately said “people who get drunk and leave the pub to keep on partying should remember their responsibility for the nation’s health”

Helen Whateley, who is *actually* responsible for the nation’s health, was sober when she said this. Presumably

4. After 6 months of world-leading “throwing apps in the bin but taking the cash anyway”, the government finally proudly released an NHS Testing App

It didn't work with NHS tests

Or on 18% of phones

Or in Scotland or Northern Ireland

And a report said only 10% of the us will use it, cos we don’t trust Dominic Cummings with our data

Nor should we: the Data Commissioner said Cummings' proposed changes to privacy law will see the UK barred from sharing global data, and cost the UK economy "up to £80bn"

5. Meanwhile the promise of 500,000 tests per day won’t be reached because, in news that should shock nobody, the government failed to order enough raw materials

So the government stopped releasing evidence of how many are being tested, cos if you don't look at it, it isn't real

6. The government, which only weeks ago was demanding we go back to work or all get sacked, now demands we all stay at home

7. Them the government said the reason the UK had the worst Covid response AND worst economy in Europe is because we are “freedom-loving”

8. And then government freedom-lovingly banned schools from using any materials that criticised capitalism

Not content with this, they also banned schools discussing “victim narratives”, which is going to make it tough to maintain their national anti-bullying strategy

9. And then a leaked report said the government was planning to freedom-lovingly deploy the military on the streets

10. Meanwhile, the government announced only 24% of businesses have done any preparation for Brexit, and only 30% of cross-channel HGVs have the correct paperwork

11. The government finally admitted what they’d been told repeatedly since 2016, and said Brexit would create 2-day queues of 7000 lorries at Channel ports

7000 lorries (at the average 16.5m each) is 1155km. That’s a queue over 70 miles long. Every day.

To solve this, the government announced a new internal border in Kent, helpfully relocating 70 miles of queues to London, Essex, Surrey and East Sussex instead

A month ago, Tory MP Sir Edward Leigh was demanding we “take back” Calais. Now we’re essentially abandoning Kent.

Because we only had 4 years to plan for this, our lovely new border will start on 1 January and be controlled by software that – and you should probably open a second bottle around now - won’t be ready until at least 4 months later

Oh, and border checks won’t be ready in Northern Ireland either

But we might not have a problem anyway: it was revealed there are just 2000 EU haulage permits for our 40,000 UK hauliers. That’s 5% of what we need, for any Govt Ministers struggling with the maths

12. And we don’t even have enough pallets for the goods we import, cos we currently rely on a supply we share with the EU, and have neither the wood nor the treatment plants, nor the required chemicals to make and treat our own

So now the government has to make a 200m border, a mechanism for policing it, an internal passport system, software, admin, buy 38,000 permits and grow enough trees for 700,000 pallets. In 3 months.

It had 5 months to add up some A-Level results, and that went swimmingly

13. I’m sure supply-and-demand won’t force prices sky high, cos it never does when you have 5% of the food the nation needs and a govt which boasts about breaking the law, but it was also announced tariffs will add £3.1bn to the nation’s food bill in Jan 2021

14. As a mark of confidence, Jim Ratcliffe, Britain’s richest man and a leading Brexiteer, buggered off to Monaco

15. And an unnamed minister was quoted: “We are stuck in a bind. If we try to cancel Brexit we destroy ourselves; if we go ahead with it we destroy the country”

16. The London School of Economics reported the long-term cost of Brexit will be 2-3 times the cost of Covid

So Rishi Sunak cancelled the budget, cos once again, if you don’t look at it, it doesn’t exist

17. JPMorgan shifted £200 billion out of the UK and into Germany calling it “a result of Brexit”.

At least 22% of our entire national economy depends on international banks based in the City of London, so when the largest one fucks off, it's a relaxing development

18. Former Prime Minister Theresa May said the government’s bill to break international law is “reckless” and “risks the integrity of the United Kingdom”

19. The Attorney General, who takes an oath to parliament, the Queen and The Bar to observe the law, said she was “very proud” to be breaking the law

The UK is a signatory and legal guarantor of the Good Friday Agreement, which brought peace to the island of Ireland after 3600 violent deaths. The Attorney General, who is sworn to maintain peace, says Brexit will break the GFA, and she is “extremely proud” of that too.

Turns out, the advisory Professor who told her she should go ahead and break the law and endanger peace in Ireland is the partner of Michael Gove’s special advisor. It’s amazing, these coincidences. Almost as if they don’t want to listen to anybody else

20. Speaking of which, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s old friend and unfailingly irrumating backer (google it) Charles Moore, who has spent his life demanding the end of the BBC, and said the BBC causes "human misery worthy of Dickens" (does he mean Mrs Brown's Boys?) is in line to run the BBC

And it was reported ex Daily Mail Editor Paul Dacre, who shouts c*unt so much his meetings are called “the vagina monologues”, and whose paper is banned as a Wiki reference cos it lies so often, is going to be put in charge of Ofcom: ensuring decent and honest broadcasting

Oh yeah, and Boris Johnson tweeted “a free press is vital in holding the government to account”, which is probably why the people holding his govt to account are being replaced with his mates and cheerleaders

21. Tory MP and successful conscience-donor Andrea Jenkins got paid £25k from a thinktank that doesn’t exist

22. And because no list is complete without a disturbing nocturnal visitation from the smirking angel of death, Home Office Secretary Priti Patel was accused of incitement to racial hatred

23. Whilst Patel, Jenkyns and the Attorney General were busy redefining “the party of Law and Order” the rest of the govt took a wild swing at “the party of fiscal responsibility”, when it was revealed the government has wasted £3,895,556,000 since March.

This includes unsafe testing kits; face masks that don’t work; broken tracing systems; useless antibody tests; cancelled ventilator challenge; and inexplicable contracts to sweet manufacturers and dormant companies with no employees, to provide PPE that never arrived!

24. The government, which insisted schools and universities reopened, said it was now vital to lock down students and prevent them from mixing in large groups

And then the government said it was sanctioning class sizes of up to 60 which ... remind me, is that more or fewer than 6?

25. Health Secretary Matt Hancock said “we’re giving up to 11,000 iPads to care homes to enable residents to connect with loved ones”

“Up to” is a bit telling, but even if it’s 11,000, there are 21,700 care homes in the UK. I guess they’ll just have to share. Goodbye forever, nana!

26. And finally, if you feel all alone in despairing at this: you aren’t. Belief in Britain as a “global force for good” has fallen 10% since 2019. I, for one, am shocked to the core....”-Russ

The RyukxLight will either be established relationship or at the very least Ryuk is more helpful to Light and his plans than in canon to the point Light feels secure enough in his position so he can give L a chance and not feel like he has to kill him immediately so a relationship could actually develop between Light and L beyond "oh no, he's hot... I still have to kill him." (Also expect Light to be even more arrogant and insufferable because he thinks he's immortal and has the power of deathgod and anime on his side.)

Ryuk and Light getting together: And then they were roommates (oh my they were roommates) and there was only one bed--Shinigami don't really need to sleep but Light doesn't know that and the bed is comfy so Ryuk doesn't fell the need to tell him.

They are both extremely bored. Ryuk is absolutely fascinated with this human--he may not be on Light's side (or so he claims) but the entertainment value is beyond his wildest dreams. He is smitten, even if he doesn't admit it. If Light is curious about something hell try at least once... Or Light may be trying to get free Shinigami eyes out of him and they catch feelings.

L enters the picture... Ryuk doesn't mind sharing 1. Hes immortal and bored and... two interesting humans! This is so cool! 2. Shinigami don't have the same ideas about monogamy. 3. Headcanons about Ryuk vary depending on if rule 36 valid up to this point in the ficverse. (I.e. Chad!Ryuk vs. Virgin!Ryuk)

L and Ryuk--L is very disturbed to learn that his case actually has a supernatural component and is more leery of Ryuk than of Light at first. This lasts for all of the moment it takes to remember that Light is Kira and Ryuk is afraid of tennis balls.

After 5 minutes of soul searching, L can admit to himself he has a thing for monsters--both internal and external.

Assuming they are all alive and this takes place in early canon this shippable version of L is probably more interested in having fun then bringing Kira to justice. Either that or he has become disillusioned with the status quo or hurt and and wants revenge to the point that he's willing to entertain Light's way of doing things.

If its post series, maybe Ryuk is bored so goes looking for Light in Mu and ends up pulling both Light and L out of Mu because their souls are intertwined and once restored as humans or Shinigami or something shippable in the afterlife then it's just learning to rely on each other as they forge a new arrangement in the Shinigami realm.

Top/bottom it's not assigned seating Regardless of bedroom positions or what arrangement they have out of the bedroom Light is the dom/one in charge of this arrangement in bed... but subs L and Ryuk unionize and gang up on him. Light is a dom in bed but not always a top. L as a sub but not always bottom. Ryuk as a service top or power bottom. Ryuk doesn't really feel pain like humans do and will go with whatever he and his partners find interesting.

Contrary to rumor Light and L aren't always fighting over who gets to top. Fighting is for chess matches, clashes of ideology, and the last chocolate eclaire--not the bedroom. Consent, safe words, and mutual respect are all very important.

Light is very dom. In every relationship before or since. Except there's Ryuk, looming over him. Making him feel kinda excited and confused and then theres that stupid sexy voice of his... But ryuk is the exception. (But he might let L fuck him if he asks nicely and submits to Kira's reign.)

When they sleep together Ryuk likes to keep them both wrapped in his wings. He likes being the little spoon sometimes though...

L gets Ryuk addicted to apple desserts.

Light frequently ends up cleaning up after the other two. Ryuk helps when he remembers but typically L is a brat.

Light: How can you stand to live like this?

Ryuk: I was formed in a dustbowl.

Light: Yes, it shows.

L [throwing candy wrappers on the ground]: Why are you doing that, that's what Watari is for?

Light gets in trouble (of either a mundane or supernatural variety) and Ryuk goes to L to ask for his help because he's the only human he can think of who would be clever enough to help Light and because of supernatural restrictions Ryuk can't save Light by himself. L is annoyed to have his fun ruined by having it confirmed that Light is Kira in this way, pissed that Light could get himself into a situation like this, and also pissed at himself that Ryuk doesn't even need to threaten him to want to risk everything to save him. After they save Light, L decides there's no point in continuing the kira case because it no longer interests him. He returns INTERPOLs money and after Light recovers from his ordeal the three go on vacation looking for something interesting but less hazardous than their previous ordeal. L becomes fascinated with the supernatural and wants to go ghost and cryptid hunting, seeking out ancient mysteries and Ryuk has plenty of leads in that. Light is still more interested in becoming god of the new world but "fine, if you guys insist..." (he doesn't want to admit he's having fun too). They drive around in L's pink crepe van huntjng ghosts, solving mysteries. Light occasionally writes the names of murderous jerks and people who are assholes to L thst they meet along the way while Ryuk laughs and L scowls in a mildly disapproving way but never really discourages him.

Au inverting the dynamics so its established relationship of lawlight first and then Ryuk joins the polycule: AU where Light and L are the same age and are childhood friends and when Light finds the Death Note they become Kira together. Ryuk is fascinated by them both and slowburn they realize their feelings for each other.

Or... Human!Ryuk and mundane college AU Ryuk is in a metal band and is probably studying art and helps rival law students Ligtt and L to chill... at least until Ryuk gets in trouble for drug possession and then Light and L compete to be his better defense counsel.

Monster AU werewolf or vampire au that's canon adjacent--Ryuk bites Light, Light goes on to monster better than Ryuk does then Light bites L, the monster hunter who falls for him...

8. The quarantine au--Light is annoyed because now killing as Kira feels rather pointless. L is annoyed because this is boring. Ryuk is having a blast because they're playing with him a whole lot more. If L and Light doesn't just use the L screen, Ryuk is always in the background, having floating, juggling apples photobomb the zoom calls.

And suddenly Ryuk is important.

Ryuk runs errand for them because he has no danger of catching the plague. They play video games, watch movies, bitch at each other, and get into pointless arguments over stupid things.

Also L makes them custom masks modeled after Ryuk's fangs just because.

Option 1: Wammy's house tooth rotting fluff, adopting all the orphans

Option 2: Wammy's house evil, B was right. It's really just about being raised as a weapon. It's like the stormtrooper program for genius orphans that may not have actually been orphans before the institute took an interest in them.

Option 3: Wammy's house complicated. The institute really is trying to do better, is the best place for the kids and while not perfect its closest thing to home/family they have.

Lawryght and Morality

These 3 can be awful enablers of each other's worst qualities. Then again...

Light: Huh, Ryuk thinks we're going too far. Maybe we should rethink this.

L [already has the prisoner tied up and being forced to listen to polka music on repeat]: But where's the fun in that?

Finding a home together

With Kira and a Shinigami as his boyfriend L feels secure enough to do more normal things he's been denied all his life.

With Ryuks help, Light finds the names of all of L's major enemies and gets to writing in the Death Note.

Light: Be mad if you want. I'm not sorry.

L tries to be mad, and fails. He can't help but feel relieved that they're gone.

He might even entertain the thought of having a permanent address.

He still enjoys traveling though.

Also L gets a kitten

The cat loves chasing Ryuk's feathers.

The cat likes Light's lap the best because Light went out of his way not to look at the cat.

cql college/job au xiyao edition

because these two have the potential to be the slowest of slow fucking burns and extremely excruciatingly painfully perfectly polite at all times

featuring: ta/student very-much-not-a-relationship, enough ust to set the entire humanities building on fire, corporate espionage, nie huaisang being the sneakiest and sweetest slytherin, background wangxian, nie mingjue being a boss, intense eye contact, let lan xichen say fuck, meng yao stress hours, WERE YOU ONLY PRETENDING TO BE DELICATE AND POOR, summer internship, background wangxian

it got uh. very long. so.

meng yao starts working for nie enterprises when he’s 16 as a part-time janitor. he has two other part time jobs and is studying for his ged.

one day he solves some kind of problem that nie enterprises is having and nie mingjue likes this guy and promotes him to his personal assistant on the spot

nie huaisong is always flitting about his brother’s office etc, and they become friends and meng yao helps him with his homework.

when huaisong is getting ready to go to small posh private university, he will definitely need tutors. mingjue is happily persuaded into converting meng yao’s job into full-time huaisang babysitting tutoring, including paying for yao’s tuition and room and board to get a degree himself; his job is to make sure huaisang gets good grades and not in trouble. meng yao sees this for the golden ticket it is and very happily agrees. this is going to be the easiest job he’s ever had, and he’s got job security as long as huaisang doesn’t mess up too badly.

first day of classes, meng yao is 22 and looking around at the 30-odd 18-year-old trust fund babies with a sinking stomach telling him that he does not belong here.

this is a philosophy and ethics class like. in a literal ivory tower. this is possibly the last place he should be.

and the most gorgeous man he’s ever seen in his life walks into the room with the professor. and he’s introduced as “and this is our TA, lan xichen.”

lan xichen smiles at the room with the kind of look that makes it feel like he’s making eye contact with everyone. and then he makes real eye contact with meng yao. “he’s attractive as hell,” they both think, and then think nothing of it.

but, it’s a small class. and it meets 3 times a week. and lan xichen shuts down someone who pokes at meng yao’s age, and meng yao asks questions perfectly tailored to making sure that huaisang and the other students actually understand the material. and by the end of week 2 they’re both saddled with an extremely unfortunate crush that they both need to get a handle on. for professionalism’s sake. they’re at work goddamn it.

and one day meng yao comes to office hours to ask a question that’s much more advanced than what they’re talking about in class, and in lan xichen’s tiny ta office talking about ethics, they are exceptionally and perfectly polite and appropriate and within the exact bounds of a ta-student relationship.

they are also both about to catch on fire.

this continues all school year, because it’s a two-part class. meng yao comes to office hours, and he and lan xichen are stringently appropriate the whole time, and at no point do they so much as brush fingers. they see each other every single day.

huaisang thinks this is 1) absolutely hilarious and 2) the perfect distraction. he wingmans the hell out of meng yao in class, he third-wheels on office hours specifically to make it worse, and he arranges “chance” meetings between them outside of class. (he got some details about lan xichen’s daily schedule from wei wuxian, who he is eternally surprised is actually somehow getting information from lan wangji the silent wonder)

(he’s not getting it from lan wangji; lan xichen is wingmanning his little brother. the info wei wuxian is passing on is straight from the horse’s mouth.)

nie huaisang thinks he’s being very clever and sneaky in arranging his classes and portfolio to make it look like he’s just taking electives when he’s really planning on switching to a fine arts major at the last possible minute

he is being clever and sneaky, but meng yao knows what he’s doing anyway

meng yao is keeping that ball up in the air as long as he can though, because that’s a later-problem.

in addition to falling in extremely professional love with his ta, his asshole dad has also come out of the woodwork and is trying to involve him in corporate espionage. which is less than super great.

on the one side, asshole dad who hasn’t supported you in 22 years and didn’t care when your mother died when you were 16 and pushed you down the stairs because you had the audacity to ask for help, who will gladly frame you even if you don’t help. on the other hand, your boss, who has treated you well for a boss, but has explicitly told you your job depends on keeping his little brother as out-of-trouble as possible and who you don’t think will believe you

in this au, he’s solidly with the nie clan because: Golden Fucking Ticket, where the strings are “don’t let huaisang fuck up too bad,” and where “fuck up” means like. drunk driving or failing a class. he’ll probably even keep his job after huaisang’s art degree reveal. all dear old dad is offering is a jail sentence.

but he still needs to somehow convince jgs that he’s double-crossing nie enterprises without actually doing that, so that he doesn’t get framed for doing it.

it’s stressful.

lan xichen’s life isn’t roses and pearls either, though it’s not nearly as stressful as playing double-agent corporate espionage while also babysitting huaisang and getting a degree

lan xichen’s life is all about being the Dutiful Eldest Son so that lan wangji can have an inch of freedom

this includes becoming a corporate accountant (a job he’s bored just thinking about) and marrying a Good Girl From A Respectable Family (he is extremely gay), and eventually having 2.5 children and a white picket fence and a dog (he’s a cat person and doesn’t know what to do with children). he tells himself it’s all for lan wangji and it’s almost enough to make him want to do it.

being the ta for his thesis advisor’s philosophy and ethics class was supposed to be his Fun Indulgent Treat because he has no idea what “fun” or “indulgent” or “treat” mean

but now he’s in love with one of his students and that’s. not. good.

he’s all of 21 and he’s pretty sure he’s going to be blacklisted from all jobs for his entire life unless he manages, somehow, to keep anyone from knowing how entirely unprofessional he’s being.

he is trying very hard to distract himself from his gayngst by helping wangji with his own. 18-year-olds can be so oblivious in love, he thinks, failing to see any irony at all.

he’s also been telling his bff mingjue about this extremely painful experience this entire time, under a pseudonym. if mingjue has to hear one more word about “Y”’s dimples, he’s going to scream and then he’s going to force Y into a closet with xichen and not let them out until they’ve solved this. he’s very tired.

at one point when he’s about to pass out from extreme eye contact, he gives meng yao his number so that he can “pass it to nie huaisang, in case he has any questions” and just. prays really hard that meng yao will text him after classes are over and he’s back to just being a grad student and they can be friends.

BUT. BEFORE HE HAS THE CHANCE. IN THAT TIME BETWEEN FINALS ENDING AND GRADES BEING TURNED IN.

lan xichen begins his summer internship at nie enterprises in accounting. and meng yao returns to fill in for an admin on her maternity leave. and they see each other in the break room.

both of them: *internal gay screaming* Hi, what a coincidence, how are you doing?

(boys, you are in different departments, nobody cares if you date as long as you don’t start fucking on the desks. they don’t know this because they’re young and very concerned with being Professional and with Career Advancement.)

they have Very Professional lunch together every day. and will buy each other coffee, Professionally. and it would be much more professional if they would just actually make out and then come to work like normal people instead of clearly wanting to make out every time they see each other and instead being Very Incredibly Professional with their words and actions.

mingjue clues in that this is Y. meng yao is Y. Oh my god, first i didn’t want to know that, second this is going to be so easy, and then i’ll never have to listen to xichen wax rhapsodic about his eyes again, he thinks.

he is incorrect.

the harder he tries, the more vehemently perfect their professionalism becomes. which means he’s watching them have extremely intense eye contact at work and can’t actually say anything about it because, it’s just eye contact? what is he going to say? stop looking at people when delivering tps reports?

he also can’t say anything outright like “just. kiss. him.” because. he’s both of their Entire Boss. at the moment he’s xichen’s boss’s boss’s boss. he can’t do anything without probably violating sexual harassment laws.

mingjue is tired.

meanwhile the corporate espionage double-agent act is still ongoing and meng yao continues to be stressed

mingjue is alerted to meng yao “stealing” secrets and has a freak-out; he hasn’t slept in three days and he trusted meng yao and how could he? was this his plan all along WAS HE ONLY PRETENDING TO BE DELICATE AND POOR

xichen steps between them and insists there’s a reasonable explanation and jesus christ mingjue have you slept when was the last time you’ve eaten you look terrible let’s get you to bed and talk about this in the morning

(meng yao doesn’t realize that he’s clutched on to lan xichen’s suit until after he releases it and lan xichen is trying, very hard, to pretend that it didn’t happen because he won’t be able to think of anything else if it did)

xichen, immediately after mingjue is in huaisang’s care: i believe you, but what the fuck is happening, yao.

(if he wasn’t so rattled by the entire mingjue-reaming thing yao would be able to savor lan xichen saying fuck sooooo much better.)

(once yao explains it is a strain not to kiss him right then and there in that empty conference room but he deserves better than lan xichen, who can’t bring anything to the table and can’t even bring him home to eat at his table, because he is the Dutiful Eldest Son and his closet needs to be made of motherfuckin steel)

(huaisang knows exactly what the fuck is up and talks mingjue down, because meng yao is sneaky but he wasn’t counting on huaisang like. actually caring.)

this is also the exact same day where lan wangji brings wei wuxian home for dinner and this goes. as well as might be expected. given Uncle hates everything about wei wuxian from his motorcycle to his leather to his attitude. but wangji is happy and he’s smiling and that’s why lan xichen is doing this. that’s why lan xichen is doing everything.

the next day the 3-zun make a Plan to trap jgs and then get them audited by the irs, since if he’s doing shady espionage stuff he’s also almost certainly doing shady tax stuff (they’re right, he is)

after the internship is over, that very evening, lan xichen asks meng yao if he wants to “hang out, as friends”

oh, you thought this pining dysfunctional trainwreck was going to end here? buddy. lan xichen is in fucking narnia, he’s so deep in the closet, because he must be Dutiful.

they go on several not-a-dates doing Friend Things. and several study sessions where no studying is done. and eventually.

lan qiren: so when are you introducing me to your boyfriend? he seems like a good kid, nothing like that wei wuxian character

lan xichen.exe has stopped working

lan qiren: what, do you think i’m blind? he either is your boyfriend or he should be. good head on his shoulders. *returns to his newspaper*

turns out lan xichen’s self-sacrificial bargain with the universe was borne from a place of living in a heteropatriarchy and not actually from the reality of his uncle’s beliefs, who knew

(lan qiren loves his nephews and wants them to be happy. he also has eyes, in his head, that connect to his brain. he knew xichen was probably gay by the time the kid was 14, and started reading books with titles like “how to accept your gay son” in the living room. xichen assumed this was about wangji, because he also has eyes and wants his baby brother to be happy. wangji bringing a boy home was actually a big surprise to his uncle. this family does not actually talk to each other about things.)

anyway the next friend-not-a-date that he and yao go on, he asks yao on a real date.

he is bracing for rejection when yao kisses??? him???? for some reason?????

they make out &c. this is the boring part

they have a conversation about their feelings and discover that they’ve both been in love for a year a YEAR a fucking year. then they make out some more because lost time.

would you look at harold osborn roaming around the avenger’s tower! they’re supposedly harry and work with oscorp, identifying as a civilian. they are around here often, so i wonder what’s got them here today. it’s been said that they’ve been acting off for one month, so maybe it has to do with the tower. lets just hope the new york times doesn’t have much to say about them in the future.

My dad originally wanted me to stay home, but it’s not like we can’t afford a place of my own, you know? Besides, he’s busy with work, I’m busy with school. It’s not like we would have seen each other, anyway.” His last sentence contained an almost bitter note to it, but the way Harry folded his arms across his chest indicated he wasn’t going to delve any deeper than he already had.

What do YOU think we should do about the situation at hand? Try to go back home? The original mission of stopping Thanos? Rewrite the entire story? Harry blinked in surprise. “What do you want me to do about it? I don’t know! I’m not like Spider-Man or anything. My specialty’s in air pollution, not doomsday, so time travel isn’t exactly my forte. Stopping Thanos would be nice, though.

What will you DO about the situation at hand? “Again, what am I supposed to do about it?” he asked incredulously. “I don’t have that kind of equipment. Honestly, I’m gonna get a head start on the work that took me years to finish, and hopefully by the time the Avengers figure this out, we’ll return to a much less polluted New York.”

Is there anything that you think needs to be done? “I don’t know. The physics of time travel or whatever weird space-phenomenon did this is outside my wheelhouse. I don’t know the first thing about what happened, let alone what’s going on.”

If need be, would you be willing to team up with the government and SHEILD to recoup and help the situation at hand? Harry scoffed, averting his eyes from the conversation. “I’m not the right Osborn to be asking that question to.” His dad had plenty of hands in the pockets of government agents, but whether he would offer Oscorp’s help, Harry wasn’t sure.

What are your worries? That I’ll fail mom. That dad will keep pulling away, or that he’s doing something stupid. That he won’t accept my research. All of these thoughts flooded Harry’s mind at first, but he didn’t dare say them out loud. All he answered, with a low voice, was, “That things could get worse.”

What do you think are the pros about this situation? “I mean, if there is a bright side, it’s that I have the knowledge to get my research done sooner.” Harry finally smiled. “I know it sounds selfish, but the sooner I can get this right, the sooner we’re on our way to a New York not plagued by air pollution. Is that really so bad?”

Anything else? “Yeah, have you seen Peter? I think I left my keys at his place. Or, I hope I did, otherwise I’m screwed.”

about:

harry osborn is the only child of norman osborn, founder and ceo of oscorp, an industrial giant with fingers in just about every pie, from the medical field to up-and-coming technology.

his mother, emily osborn, was an environmental lawyer, who harry looked up to for her strong convictions and her compassion. she died when he was thirteen from oshtoran syndrome, a rare genetic disease. harry worries he might have the same genes, and hopes they remain dormant.

had some acute lonely rich kid syndrome growing up, but this got better as time went on and he went to college aka got more autonomy

his mom is part of the reason he was inspired to pursue an advanced degree in chemical engineering. his current focus is on finding a way to decrease/eliminate air pollution in NYC

this is part of what’s been causing some strain on his relationship with his dad, who harry is realizing might not be on board with harry’s ideas (for selfish reasons)

is also interning at oscorp while he's in school (and being groomed to take over for his father)

harry is also unaware of his dad’s true intentions or identity (aka if norman is currently/becomes the green goblin, harry has no idea)

still wants to fix his relationship with his dad because he’s the only family he’s got (if anything happens to his family he Will Go Apeshit because he already lost his mom when he was young he can’t lose his dad too)

has yet to realize he’s actually good at/big into revenge (a trait he got from his dad, but he’s yet to be in a situation where that’s really required on a dangerous scale)

doesn’t realize his blindness to the feelings of others (and thus his potential to hurt others depending) when he’s blinded by his own strong emotions

has yet to uncover his father’s identity, spider-man’s identity, or feel blindsided by both. there’s definitely potential to take on his father’s mantle, or maybe this time around, things will be different. but the apple never falls far from the tree...

a thor movie summary notes whatever

heya so nobody asked for this but here goes my entire notes of a summarry of the first thor movie

this was for a class work okay

New Mexico ; a person tries to register an anomaly an astrophysicist okay this movie starts differently than I thought thunder storms coming someone up there appears from the vortex and they run over him explanation of Norse mythology and they tell us about the war between Odin and the frost Giants. Orient took their power sources back to Asgard. Because it's a movie it has a chance to show us how radiant and perfect in comparison to New Mexico the reason the story is being told is to show thor and loki that war isn't good the next thing we see is thor being crowned Crown Prince in the event of a frost giant snake into the Asgardian vault to recover their power source and end up interrupting the ceremony. They failed their mission because security at the vault Teresa beat of a Maniac doesn't think properly of his actions this is a bunch of friends that don't matter.

I'm here thor decides to break the rules and still go to Jotunheim even though his brother Loki, who is a chaotic neutral at best, not to and also his friends advised he shouldn't do it but he doesn't care and does it anyway.

Thor's friends are going through Jotunheim to cause a big mess, Thor demands some answers from the ruler of jotunheim, he mentions theres a traitor(ps it's loki) it odins house and ignores that the frodt giant is actually nice and let's them leave but thor starts a fight anyway.

*insert action scene cause this is an action movie* (we also discover as does he that loki is actually a frost giant that was taken by odin during the war)

we can also see thors magnificent strength, odin come to save thors gang cause thors stupid and almost started a war then they have a fight and odin has to punish thor for his arrogance and stupidity by sending him to earth. While taking his powers away and giving the power to anyone worthy of holding mjiolnir thor's hammer.

now we retur to the start of the movie, thor being run over by a pair of scientists and getting tasered by an intern. thor goes a bit crazy on earth because who are these people doing something to the allmighty thor. we also get astrophyiscist science explained. then he gets runovered again. his friends over on asgard are talking about how horrible thors banishment is and loki reveals that he is the one that alerted odin, one of them suggests that loki might be a traitor ; loki goes for the frost giants powersource to learn more about what he is and finds odin. Now we go back to earth and see that thor doesn't know human etiquette.

talking about the hammer, here people find it and since noone is able to lift it a lot of people go near and try to take it; like the sword in the stone. until a certain organization comes and puts the whole area on lockdown to investigate.

the main scientist is called jane and honestly she makes very bad decisions(love interest) gets recommended not to keep on checking thor out; government takes away all her stuff and she gets pretty mad since they take her research. Shield James science equipment and research since discover for some reason she was there in the day the the aka the hammerfell I have some research basically no illegal wait but it's not illegal because they are the law. at Asgard well now remember at the Berkeley Loki is Apple Dutch angles oh yeah look at those odin link has fallen asleep and can't wake up loki is King in the meantime and denies the request to bring out door of his banishment.

back on Earth it's more about Norse mythology because he's curious about thor and everything. Now we get to see Torrid Jean because dorbrook dr. Selby after he drank passed out. Now we get to see more torrin James bonding okay but Jason is actually Exposition because store tells her about the 9 Realms of Asgard which is Earth and the others he apologizes for being a dick she apologizes for running him over oh and give her her research notebook because he grabbed it from the lockdown no to research more because she's actually right about her research on interpreting they have the look in their eyes pierdas relationship lasts yeah like two movies break up off screen. I want to sleep now. yay we get to see the sidekick Arjun game about going back to Rescue I'm bringing back to Asgard I have a lease on board because he doesn't believe inloki's reign yay now the sidekicks are not aired and they're going to search for tour but loki noticed that they left I never remember the name of this enemy but he reminds me so much of the one from X-Men Days of Future Past

Thor's friends found him yay I hear third Lair devil oketokun was a big lie because all his friends are like to know he's in there he's just asleep and then the enemy that guy Air Jordan wrecks havoc and beats Sidekicks up because they suck now they're evacuating the CD so that the Scythe cakes can keep the evil guy's he doesn't kill anyone going because killing is bad okay so because the bad guy is beating everyone really wants to kill tour Thor goes to find friends and he says some inspiring words to save so that she doesn't die kids and now he is worthy because he risked everything to save the others and has become a better person in the span of 10 minutes. thor tells Jane that he will come by he promises her that he will come back but we all know that he doesn't come back until like two years later because the bifrost is broken at the end of this movie because loki overcharge the bifrost it is going to destroy asgard and he can't let that happen but because of that he won't be able to see Jane ever again and he and Loki are almost falling to the universe and Loki let's go and disappears into the universe.

As a very merry and all the people in osgard are celebrating and everything Contender stories their mother and Thor are sad because Loki has gone and they love him like a son and brother and he also misses jane

NAME : evangeline sofia grimhilde. EYE COLOUR : hazel, melted honey, coffee fused with viridescences. wildfires when the sun glazes over, hints of forest trees surrounding the warmth. an uneven balance of hot and cold, shallows and depths. HAIR STYLE / COLOUR : born with raven black hair, dyed a midnight blue from the young age of five, mostly due to her infatuation with the color blue after discovering how blue the skies could be from a nearly destroyed book hidden in their castle. pages littered with wilting paintings, oceans blue and true, waterfalls cascading into the depths of the earth. muted sapphires with dull sparkles and she liked pretty things, she wanted to be pretty. considering her mother viewed her as her protégé, wanting her to be the fairest, even if it meant keeping up a vigorous hair routine to maintain the sapphire blues in her silky locks.

on the isle, tresses were kept curled with perfection from a heated rod, dangerous but as mother always said, beauty is pain. often styled in a v-braid, a semblance of royalty. length was kept past shoulders, but grown just a bit past mid-back once in auradon. hair styles varied throughout the years in auradon, curls looser and often side parted with a braid for accentuation. most recent styles has her tighter curls making an appearance, predominantly raven colored with blue undertones, and styled with a simple, loose half-up twist. HEIGHT : five feet, four inches. CLOTHING STYLE : on the isle, leather was the dominant material used, and evie made all of her outfits on her own from discarded fabrics she could find. she valued being original and only liked wearing clothing custom fitted to her physique. often wearing skirts and dresses with patterned leggings and heeled booties, occasionally knee highs. very rarely seen without heels, she’s been scrutinized for not having grown any taller than she already has, believing that she’d look prettier with longer legs, and often gives off that illusion with her shoes. color schemes include various shades of blue with reds, whites, and blacks for accents. after leaving the isle, she adjusts to auradon city fashion, wearing silk and satin and cotton and whatever material she can get her hands on, she keeps leather as an accessory, mostly only having them with her fingerless gloves or hand wraps. her overall style matches that of high fashion, often straying from the ‘norm’ while still being classified as a trendsetter and fashionista. color scheme remains the same in auradon, not as covered up in layers. FEARS : disappointing her mother and everyone, failing, being and ending up alone, being unloved, being hated and disliked, being a social pariah, being unwanted, aging, wrinkles, any physical imperfection she can gain with age, scars, being seen as ugly, ending up like her mother, hurting people with her magic, feeling trapped, losing control, before d2 : the isle, coming face-to-face with her murderers.

BIGGEST PET PEEVE : unblended eyeshadow, being underestimated, people who think being mean is a personality, those without a spine, those who won’t take no for an answer, loud chewers, passive aggressiveness. yes, i added more than one. evie’s not the type to have this overarching pet peeve, it’s just little baby things.

AMBITIONS FOR THE FUTURE : simply put, she wants to love herself completely and fully. but that will take forever to happen so she’s focusing on her business as a designer and continuing to create new trends and collections. for ballet, she strives to improve her skills as a dancer and master the roles she’s given, and just overall have a status as one of the best ballet dancers. she wants the isle to be fully liberated, continuing with the vk program she created with ben and making the island into a habitable place, not a prison. her main goal is making sure incoming vks are welcomed and safe and comfortable, doing what she can to help the adjustment. she also wants to know auradon law inside and out to be the best lawyer she could be for vks and those unfairly treated by the law.

𝐋𝐀𝐘𝐄𝐑 𝟎𝟎𝟑. : THOUGHTS

FIRST THOUGHTS WAKING UP : she doesn’t want to be awake. getting up in the morning is fairly difficult with her if she has to follow an alarm, as she prefers to let the sun rays lull her out of her sleep and take her time. but usually she’s kind of thoughtless, mostly feeling how tired she is, how exhausted she is depending if the night had been riddled with nightmares. since she follows a continuous schedule, she doesn’t really have to think about what she has to do but follows the patterns of getting in the shower and completing her beauty routine, then acknowledging plans for the day. WHAT THEY THINK ABOUT MOST : a hair out of place, uneven make-up, is she smiling too widely, is she talking too quickly, too softly ? though intensely internally self-absorbed, evie cares immensely for others, so her thoughts are often fused with her self-presentation and how to best treat others around her with utmost kindness. WHAT THEY THINK ABOUT BEFORE BED : how she shouldn’t have laughed so hard at something that wasn’t so funny, how she should’ve checked her hair because it’d been imperfect for far too long and wondering how many people had to see her when she didn’t look and feel her best, how to better present herself the next day, how to make sure she’s not overlooked and unheard, how to better treat others and not make the same mistakes again. super analytical and detailed, she takes every micro-expression and tone to heart. WHAT THEY THINK THEIR BEST QUALITY IS : for the longest time, she thought her physical features were her best quality and her ability to adapt and metamorphosize herself into the perfect princess for others. but ultimately, she’s grown to realize her adaptability and perseverance, stubbornness and patience, among others, are her best qualities.

𝐋𝐀𝐘𝐄𝐑 𝟎𝟎𝟒. : WHAT’S BETTER ?

SINGLE OR GROUP DATES : single, she prefers to dedicate time to the person she wants to be with. she also likes the attention and focus to solely be on her. though, once reaching a comfortable stage in any relationship, she would like group dates, they’re fun with the right pairs. TO BE LOVED OR RESPECTED : loved. it seems ridiculous to crave love more than respect, but being deprived of it, of what it feels like, she wants nothing more than to be loved. sometimes it gets to her and she believes it defines her self-worth, but she truly, and genuinely, desires to be loved more than to be respected. is it a bit toxic, to be so infatuated with being loved ? maybe. BEAUTY OR BRAINS : brains. before auradon, she probably would have preferred beauty, but only through the projection of herself, considering she knew others would pick her for her beauty, not her brains. although she cares very much for her appearance, and while it may be the first thing she notices in a person, it’s ultimately their mind that pulls her in. and brains doesn’t equate to intelligence or anything, it’s just beyond the concept of physical attractiveness. DOGS OR CATS : cats.

𝐋𝐀𝐘𝐄𝐑 𝟎𝟎𝟓. : DO THEY…

LIE : to herself ? all the time. to others ? not so much. she tries to be as honest as she can be, wanting to pull away from her habits of lying and manipulation from the isle, but she’s only gotten better at coating the truth if it’s something that could be potentially hurtful. BELIEVE IN THEMSELVES : to an extent, yes. but not as much as she should. she puts herself down more than anything. BELIEVE IN LOVE : of course. deeply. wholly. madly. fully. wholeheartedly. WANT SOMEONE : yes, but it’s not a need. evie wants someone, but she’s learned to be alone. she’s been alone growing up, it’s not a difficult adjustment. she wants to want, and to be wanted.

𝐋𝐀𝐘𝐄𝐑 𝟎𝟎𝟔. : HAVE THEY…

BEEN ON STAGE : yes ! dancing on stage, mostly ballet, and through her drama class. DONE DRUGS : no. CHANGED WHO THEY WERE TO FIT IN : yes. changing herself was a big part of growing up and adjusting to auradon. evie might adjust to fit the audience, still, but she will always stay true to herself at her core.

oh man , even as a kid tobias was emotional . sure it was normal for kids to throw a tantrum or two but tobias felt everything intensely -- love , pain , fear . every feeling was amplified . when he was first born , it had been the night of a bad storm . weather forecast predicted heavy rainfall but on that night it was thundering and hailing and the rain was violent . but tobias managed to cry louder than all of it . his parents barely even remembered that there was a storm going on because their little baby toby , managed to drown it all out .

ever since then , tobias’ emotions always became the buffer between his family and external circumstances -- like he was born with the sole purpose of removing their problems . the way he felt about anything or anyone , how he loved , how he was anxious and scared and afraid , gave everyone a chance to be better . the be tougher for him , to be braver for him . and as he got older , his emotions only raged on . but they managed . they had a systematic way of dealing with it and it reaped a bountiful of benefits .

up until he was eight years old . when he was eight , their farm was hit with another pretty bad storm . much worse than before , crops were ruined , gates seemed to have been shook loose by the wind , trees had fallen down , power was cut and a hole had created a leak in their dining room ceiling . everything that could’ve possibly gone wrong went wrong . but tobias thought it wasn’t that bad , a little water damage ? stick a pail under it , a loose gate ? just close it ! ruined crops ? just plant new ones ! unfortunately , his father did not hold the same brazen attitude he did . he was already buried in a moutain of debt and he was stressed and scared and found peace in the comfort of strangers and at the bottom of beer bottles

him , his mother and his sisters put up for it for a while . but it was obvious his mother had fallen quickly out of love . at night he would stumble in reeking of booze and him and toby’s mother would go at it for hours , they would throw things and smash things and he’d just end up leaving again . and tobias , he was never the heavy sleeper , would tip toe down the staircase and hold his mother in his arms as she cried herself to sleep .

and this went on for years , but the most potent memory of his asshole of a father , was when he was twelve . around two in the morning , tobias heard them downstairs again . arguing and fighting . and they never hurt each other , only the things around them but this time he heard a thud . and he could still remember how his heart fell to his stomach and fear was in his throat . but he got up and he saw his father towering of his mother , crying , apologising profusely . and tobais , a scrawny little twelve year old , went into protector - mode . he shoved his father away and his father , he got sick of it , got annoyed at the little boy poking at his arm and he shoved him away , just a little too hard and in a bad direction . tobias broke his arm that night . and his mother suffered from a concussion . he never saw his father again after that .

that night changed him . he was afraid of so much more but he couldn’t let it show . he was the only ‘ man of the house ’ and as the stereotypical man of the house ( despite their family being rather progressive about gender roles ) he needed to be there for his mother and his sisters . he would skip two days usually of school so that he could do more farm work . they still had to pay his father’s debts and so they couldn’t really hire anyone , so it was just him , his mother and his sisters helping around when they can .

he gave up his dream for that farm . he wanted to be a writer . maybe novels , maybe articles . he loved writing . and he was damn good at it too , his english teacher always said he had the potential to be someone truly great . and more people started to read the school newsletter after he joined the team too ! but the farm . his mother . his sisters . he needed to be there for them , he needed to be what his father failed to be . a good man . a noble man who could help his family . and that realisation , the weight of such duties on his shoulder , it was heavy and it sucked but tobias felt ... fulfilled . like giving something up like that , sacrificing his own dreams for the safety and security of his family , it made him feel like a hero . and he was damn quick to get addicted to it .

as he grew up , the more the feeling , this addiction grew . it was messed up , the way he sought for opportunities to do good only to feel hurt again . but it made him feel like a hero . he’d let people use him , he’d give them ample opportunity to hurt him ( emotionally ) and he’d come out of it feeling broken and deceived and worn out . but he’d realise that it was for their own good , that by carrying pain and anguish , he had saved them from their own . so yeah , you could say he had a hero complex . but the thing about internal complexes , the people who have them don’t often know they have them .

then the thing came . pollination the news people called it . and tobias , he should’ve packed up everything he could need , he should’ve called his sisters to come back to the farm , he should’ve gotten his mother ready , he should’ve been at the farm . but he wasn’t . he was in new york . because he had hired a PI and they had found his father . despite of what he did , how he broke the family , he was still his father . and tobias still loved him . and he just needed answers and closure . but the borders had closed , chaos ensued and everything that held them , society , together , crumbled .

and for a while he was by himself . no way to reach his sisters . or his mother . most nights were consumed with thoughts about them and the anxiety it accompanied . were they alive ? were they okay ? were they still human ? the biggest regret of his life was not being there at the farm on june 29th . and he should’ve been there . but he gave way to his own desires , gave way to his need for closure with his father . and look what happened . he had lost everything in the process . and so he promised himself , or the universe more like , that even though this new world was cruel and ruthless , he was to be good . to accomodate their desires and their needs and never his own . see , exhibit a .

exhibit a . a woman , trying to fight of a cluster of carriers . tobias , watching from a distance , clearly analysing that the woman’s desires to survive and needs a hero . and tobias was happy to provide . he helped her fight them off . he learned his name was bathsheba and he had a younger sister named maggie . and for a while it was the three of them . and tobias , who always felt everything with such a high degree of passion , couldn’t help but just fall in love with bathsheba fischer . and for the whole time with her , he was just a love struck fool . man , he even thought he could marry her . even imagined his proposal and their wedding in his head . she was just so perfect . until she wasn’t .

seven months ago , both maggie and bathsheba left him as they were attacked by a swarm of carriers and they got separated . he managed to run away , calling batsheba and maggie to follow him but they were nowhere to be seen . maybe they had found their own shelter , maybe they were dead . tobias didn’t want to dwell on the latter . even just the thought hurt him . and for a few nights that was all he could think about . over and over again . about how they got separated ? but there was something , a feeling in the pit of his stomach , that maybe they left . left hm alone to rot and die and suffer as one of those creatures . maybe .

but nothing about him has changed since then . he still let people walk over him , accomodate their own needs and wants before his own . this feeling , of doing something selfless , of being what people needed , it was the only thing that made him want to keep living . he wasn’t doing this - surviving thing for himself anymore . people needed him ( who exactly needed him , he’s not exactly sure . he’s kinda just generalising that people overall needed him or someone will need him ) and he was continually going to fight for those people like they were his very own family .

Organization: NEW WORLD ORDER

Overview

The New World Order, or also known as Order of Terror but better know to mankind as The Bavarian Illuminati, is allegedly a secret organization controls most government affairs using the Romefeller Family as the main imperial organization base, it also one of the few known organization from Earth affiliated to Grand Multi-Universe Empire, a totalitarian superpower from another dimension.

One of the primary antagonistic factions on both the Magic and Science sides of the world, they have manipulated events from the shadows, since the Bavarian Illuminati is the true organization keeping the Romefeller family active, they are considered to be the true leaders of the Romefeller Foundation.

Its primary objective is to usher in a New World Order in which the elite within the society have complete and utter control of the planet under the control of Diabla, better known as Zayane. They have evaded disclosure of their plans and technologies through their control of the media, but very once in a while, an insider comes out to disclose their testimony of how the society advances its goals. As a conspiracy theory, the term New World Order or NWO refers to the emergence of a totalitarian world government under the thumb of the Romefeller Family. Eventually, their goals changed to extermination of human race. The Bavarian Illuminati was founded by the Magic God Merodach 1900 years ago prior the beginning of Toaru Majutsu no Index.

Despite the fact that Diabla is the current leader, it is unknown who is the true leader; Grand Demon Gaelion, the Dark Emperor of the Grand Empire that is guiding Diabla or Diabla herself.

The Bavarian Illuminati is also an underground organization that controls one-third of the world's economy. It is commanded by Diabla, who regularly send out its elite assassin squad the Numbers on missions. A select amount of prestigious figures such as politicians and businessmen have connections to the organization. Merodach was the true leader of the organization until his death 3 years ago prior the beginning of the story.

It has enormous global influence, surpassing even the power of the United Nations. This power is never used directly however, as Order of Terror prefers to subvert and manipulate other countries and the U.N. and Global Pact Defense to do its bidding.

The common theme in conspiracy theories about a New World Order is that a secretive power elite with a globalist agenda is conspiring to eventually rule the world through an authoritarian world government—which will replace sovereign nation-states—and an all-encompassing propaganda whose ideology hails the establishment of the New World Order as the culmination of history's progress. Many influential historical and contemporary figures have therefore been purported to be part of a cabal that operates through many front organizations to orchestrate significant political and financial events, ranging from causing systemic crises to pushing through controversial policies, at both national and international levels, as steps in an ongoing plot to achieve world domination.

Before the early 2000s, New World Order conspiracism was limited to two American countercultures, primarily the militantly anti-government right and secondarily that part of fundamentalist Christianity concerned with the end-time emergence of the Antichrist, which is Diabla herself. Bavarian Illuminati is composed of around 13 different families, each with it´s own goal. These families include Romefeller Family, Nevermind Family, etc. The Bavarian Illuminati are the true organization behind Romefeller Family, what explains why their military is so strong. Most Romefeller technology were created by the Bavarian Illuminati and rivals that of Academy City's due to the origins in which such technology comes from. Echidina Romefeller was once related to the organization but hates policy making and chooses to stay in the front lines using their technologies to create war, so they can gain money and profit to expand their activities.

History

The secret society was founded in 200 year A.D. by Merodach under Diabla's guidance. An ex-Illuminati programmer named Svali says that they appear to be descendants of the Knights Templar and the Rosicrucians. Merodach gathered many rich families and used her powers to brainwash the main leaders of the families, including the leader of Romefeller Family to join forces. At first, their name was New World, since their goal was to unify the world; the entire world ruled by one government. However, when Merodach died by the hands of Zayane/Diabla after failing an important task, she assumed the post of leader and has been leading ever since.

Methods of Control

According to Juria Romefeller, the Order of Terror control an area through its:

Banks and financial institutions

Insiders call the Federal Reserve system the Babylonian Money Magic Slave System.

Local government: It don't has direct connection with the government of the world besides Romefeller Family and USA but it has some members hide in the government, using the corruption to let most of poor people to die.

Law: Children are encouraged to go to law school and medical school, so they can keep their activities rolling through society. More workers means more money, more organizations, more industries and more work.

Media: Others are encouraged to go to journalism school, and members help fund local papers. Creating false propaganda, keep people watching TV to keep them away from reality.

Trade: Propaganda of products in TVs, radios and internet. Encourage people to buy more. The use of capitalism in these advertisements is taken to the extreme, because when new products are created, people are encouraged to buy, buying in excess and thus making the organization richer. This money is used to create war weapons and war machines to their future reign.

Slavery: Only the poor forgotten by the law are part of this system. They are slaves of industries and factories that belongs to Romefeller Family and work for 15/7 without salary and are keep in jails to prevent them from escaping. Most of Romefeller Family's bullets are made by their slaves. The slaves only work for the military.

Organization

According to insider Kihara Maiya, the Illuminati is split into three major factions:

The Nevermind Cartel The Bolshevik Axis The Romefeller Rulers

The relations among these factions are in a state of constant flux.

The Nevermind faction typically controls modern U.S. affairs. Much of its wealth comes from the oil industry.

The Bolshevik Axis is controlled by the Romefeller family and is the oldest sector of the Order of Terror

The current Pinder, or leader, of the Bavarian Illuminati is the Romefeller family.

Romefeller meetings are arranged yearly to settle disputes within the organization.

Local Level

They have groups in every major city of the United States and France. They originally entered through Pittsburgh, PA and later built their group in Paris in 1800. The most notable HQ of Bavarian Illuminati is located in the center of Paris, France. The entire district of the Center belongs to Bavarian Illuminati, including all buildings around the main Branch of the Bavarian Illuminati.

Rituals

Recruitment

In the essence of the initiation ritual and process of becoming an Illuminati, lies a simple thesis: one have to be reborn in order to be accepted. The Myth of Creation is the essence of the process.

It all starts with God, who billions of years ago, had to “commit suicide” in order to be transformed, and reborn. The Illuminati believe that the end result transformation is you becoming a “matter”, no longer a physical subject, but a matter. But how can one die and be reborn again? The Illuminati believe that the person can only understand death if you experience it, and in a close encounter that is. By undergoing “samsara”, new recruits demonstrate their infinite power, eternal fearlessness, complete knowledge of existence and intellectual curiosity. All that is needed in order to be part of the Illuminati.

So, naturally, the initiation process includes a ritual of sacrifice. For the sacrifice, there are different rituals performed, depending of the Illuminati order. Some are extreme, and require a death of another human being, however, the sacrifice of a person must be a pure victim; pure and virgin, so that's why the victim are newborn children around 0 and 5-years old. In some cases, the inductee is required to kill somebody during the initiation process, an action that will prove his true loyalty to the Order and beliefs.

However, the more common ritual includes a sacrifice of an animal. In their belief that a person receives power from a departing spirit (the spirit of another person dying), the Order sacrifice an animal. The inductee is positioned at a bench, lying on his back, and an animal is placed on top of him. The animal is then killed, and let to bleed to death. The blood of the dying animal spills on the inductee, and the Illuminati believe that the blood is what gives power and knowledge.

Diabla's Sex Cult ritual

A cult extremely twisted and somber. The cult of sex is something bizarre that is carried out in the most remote places of society, in the forests. In this ritual, more than 100 men and 100 women participate in a massive orgy around a campfire filled with drugs.

Cultists believe that sexual rituals increase Diabla's strength, and in fact, that increases, for Diabla has strengthened herself from people's sins, including lust and greed. Most people in those rituals are members of the Order of Terror, while another part has been brainwashed or paid to be there. In this ritual, there is an extreme need for blood, so it is necessary for all women to be virgins.

After sex, the couple should dance insanely around a fire pit located in the center of the orgy, where they should shout "Heil Diabla!" Several times, this increases Diabla's political strength and intelligence. All this must be done while the person is naked. However, these rituals must be performed in all the countries of the world at the same time, only then will Diabla feel a difference in her power. After the dancing, the people need to bathe in animal blood and prey for Diabla more than 50 times, and so the ritual is complete. All people need to drugged to complete the ritual.

Sacrifice

Although Diabla feeds on the dead souls and destruction that the Order of Terror is doing on the surface of the Earth, Diabla can not become so powerful without the basics of sacrifices. To increase Diabla's spiritual energy, many cultists and members of her political party kidnap virgin men and women to use them as sacrifices. All victims must be virgins by nature.

The victim is taken to a temple of Diabla in the forest or a underground base where he or she will be sacrificed. First, all cultists must be wearing black robes and should be in a triangle position in front of the temple. The victim is tied by 5 helpers in the ritual on a piece of wood. After that, all the cultists in the place must use 20 needles to pierce the body of the victim. After all cultists have finished, the victim is bathed in human blood and then cremated alive. According to the religious of Diabla's church, this ritual is so powerful that it strengthens Diabla in double. Only one victim of this ritual makes Diabla stronger than 100,000 people being killed at the same time.

lyon vastia - i know i don’t talk about them a ton bc they’re both like “ugh, manly, feelings bad” but... they literally love each other so much. that’s his best friend!!!! they would do anything for each other. like, lyon may pretend to be annoyed, but if not love best friend, why call him when sad, hm? why take him almost everywhere you go, hm? why go drinking together and trust him to carry you back home (even if he does not do it, oopsie)? and kit will outright admit that he is a ride or die for lyon vastia. also, as per the other two dynamics on this list, it’s the having a tattoo for every beloved person in your life for me. like who does that??? kit, that stupid idiot who loves lyon so much that when he “died” he literally felt it and was ready to go find that stupid son of a bitch and make him be alive again. that is basically his brother (and is his brother-in-law) and he loves him with his whole heart.

toby horhota - OH TO BE TWO CRACKHEADS. you know how much i love them. whereas everyone else is a stickler for the rules, he and toby will do absolute batshit shit together and everyone else will either have to hold them back or deal with it. he wants to protect toby with everything that’s in him, and toby helps him to let loose in a way that he hasn’t been able to since he was a kid. kit is always trying to be the bright and sunshiney person for everyone, but when he needs it from someone else, it’s from toby! toby will always cheer him up when he’s down. and kit never treats toby like he’s stupid, or somehow an outcast, and that’s really refreshing for him. also if anyone says a bad word about toby kit beats the shit out of them. i love their dynamic so much and it warms my heart every time i think of the two of them together.

lisley law - oh so we talkin heartbreak out here..... okay. kit actively tried to move on after seeing macbeth again, and lisley definitely cracked that shell that most other people weren’t able to crack. like, he dated plenty and probably was serious with a couple others, but no one hit him like she did. he was, to put it plainly, a huge fucking simp. she’s hilarious and take charge and he loved that confidence she had, and she’s also super grounding whereas he’s a total goof, which is something he always needs. they managed to balance each other out in a way that was super interesting and definitely something he needed. also, he loved her no matter what! he loved her so much he was considering quitting his guild to go move in with her - and that’s super hard for him, because he’s already left one family and doesn’t want to leave another one. also, even though they don’t talk anymore, their breakup was pretty amicable. no one was like really angry, just pretty sad on both ends.
