when asked what he meant when he was talking about gotham being a bastard and then switching to praising it, tim just went a little pale and then glanced at duke and then his own arm and brushed it off with a shaky voice

im not entirely sure how to work with the alchemy and/or equivalent, duke is already a meta so i’d make sense that he can use his current abilities as well as potentially understanding how to use alchemy if i go that way.

as far as it goes with tim, i think that he has enhancements, he is a little bit stronger, he heals just a little bit faster, he’s got more stamina, etc. but he’s also got something that no one else does.

he hears gotham. not all the time, but if gotham feels like teasing him or testing him, he hears her. while in gotham it’s almost as if he knows everything that’s happening. while on one of his first patrols back after the surgery with jason and duke, he stops dead in his tracks, completely tense and when the other two notice that he’s stopped they look back and him and he just stands there for a minute before shaking his head and backing up, telling them not to go that way, that it’s not safe and they need to leave. when jason starts to tease him to ask if he’s a scaredy cat, tim just shutters and grabs jason’s arm to haul him away.

they find out the next day that a massive shootout went down, along with the building they were about to walk into collapsing completely, everyone in the building (criminals, thankfully. no civilian injuries) crushed and dead. they ask tim how he knew and he just said that he had a feeling. they learn quickly to listen to what tim says when it comes to gotham.

if i do give them alchemy i think that it’ll be a surprise to everyone.

ok SO for background there are 6 personality modifiers that every creature in rain world (excluding the player ofc) has on a scale from 0 to 1: aggression, bravery, dominance, energy, nervousness, and sympathy. the closer to 1 each of the traits is, the more of that trait the creature will exhibit. for the sake of this post not getting to be 10000 words, we'll just focus on these traits (mainly dominance) in scavengers.

dominance levels don't change any other personality traits, but are impacted by traits like bravery and aggression. scavengers with high dominance are more likely to act as pack leaders, walk over scavs with lower dominance values, and even have longer eartlers and longer frills. scavengers with lower dominance values, however, are more likely to abandon a task to try and find pack leaders, among other behavior changes. (1)

additionally, there are elite scavengers, whose eartlers are down turned, who wear carved vulture masks, and who usually spawn with electric spears and even have a small chance to spawn with singularity bombs. elite scavengers have the ability to leap across long distances, unlike normal scavengers, but can still be traded with (if you're willing to risk it). (2) normal scavengers will usually defer to elite scavs and will protect them from any perceived threat.

of course, this mini-essay would be incomplete without mentioning the chieftain. the chieftain (called ScavengerKing in the code) is arguably the only boss in the entire game and is encountered at the end of artificer's campaign. like elite scavengers, it can leap into the air after a short animation and often utilizes electric spears. however, it wears armor made from red centipede shells, a mask that looks like a miniature version of the rain deer skulls at tolls, and has both the mark of communication and a citizen id drone. it's found on a throne in the 12th council pillar, house of braids in metropolis by every slugcat that can access that area (however, it doesn't spawn in expedition mode as monk or survivor and has no arena unlock). it cannot be traded with, as offering it a pearl will begin a fight with it, and it will otherwise just sit on its throne and gesture angrily towards the exit. in artificer's campaign, the chieftain always looks the same, however, some scavenger ids are chieftains (not really sure why this is).

while it may be difficult to see at first, scavs follow a pretty simple but interesting social structure. i'd encourage reading more on the rw wiki (which i've linked here) and watching them yourself, if you can! they're seriously my favorite creatures in the game and some of my favorite video game critters ever. the diversity in body shape and color as well as the differences in their personalities and behaviors make them a treat to watch, even if you're not interacting with them directly. safari mode or just hanging out out of their sight can be good ways to observe them behaving "naturally."
