Wait so do u think timmy wasnt neglected as a child or do u think that neglegence isnt a big deal as long as their rich
Damn friend you really asked that in the most dishonest way you possibly could, like the only reason why I wouldn't think tims parents are neglectful is bc they're rich and not bc I just don't think they qualify as neglectful but let's go into it anyway
First off let's get our definition correct neglectful in parenting means the failure of a parent or guardian to provide basic needs for a child such as food clothing shelter medical care or supervision, which when people refer to tims parents being neglectful they're usually talking about that last one but even that's a stretch considering while tims parents were away working alot they never just left tim to fend for himself usually tim had someone else to watch him mostly in the form of boarding school so by the broad definition Jack and Janet drake were not neglectful parents - just bc theyre weren't always physically beside tim does not make them neglectful
Now do I think Jack and Janet were perfect parents - no but I do think people give them a lot of grief for reasons beyond their control such as them being away alot since theyre archaeologists and it's part of their jobs to travel alot personally i think it'd be worse if instead of leaving tim in a safe stable environment they were constantly upheaving him, moving him around and disrupting his schooling so what he could hang out at a dig site? Also we don't actually know for sure how often Jack and Janet were away for - we just know Tim wishes they were home more which btw is understandable I'm not saying Tim can't be upset at his parents not being around more, I'm just saying it's not exactly a good enough reason to jump to jack and janet were the worst parents ever like a lot of people seem to do.
The other thing people like to point to when talking about bad parenting is Jack and how he interacts with Tim after Janet died which honestly is just alot of the parent and child love each other but don't understand each other causing conflict troupe it's not exactly something I could really say puts Jack on the worst dad's list especially since he does try to be better and does get that character development as time goes on (you know before he dies too)
Anyway this is all long enough but I wanted to end on a cute note with these pages from this week's issue of batman #134

To elaborate, I don't have an issue with people having different takes on the character. Give me two Jason stans and you will get three versions of Jason. It's inevitable with how different his comics are thematically and in how they depict Jason. Jason in the 00s was a villain and a foil, Jason in 10s was a major character in his own right. Jason now is mowed down by Zdarsky and told interesting stories with by Rosenberg. Jason is back to grassroots type vigilante he never really was in Martinborough's work. Jason was a sweet child pre-Crisis and was intentionally moved toward a tragedy in Starlin's run. Jason was an afterthought, a cautionary tale, a ghost of subconsciousness, a fridged woman, a foil, again - or first, in the 90s and early 00s. Titans Jason - the only live action depiction of Jason - was a case of missed potential; great drama material, but with speed-run of the UtRH storyline with unnecessary changes made him inconsistent.
If you consider him a psycho, okay, it's there in Morrison's work. If you want to say he's morally inconsistent, you can point out how he went from Bruce's foil to Dick's to Tim's, even Mia Dresden's. Which, it all required tweaking, because these four are not the same, so their foil couldn't be either.
But isn't it the case with all the characters? "Catwoman cares about Bowery" the only thing she cares for the last ten years with any consistency is her boyfriend. That's not who she is anymore. Why would you insist someone to pick your version of Catwoman but you refuse to acknowledge that other fans can do the same with their favorite character?
And you, Jason fans, who are always self-disparaging, who always feel the need to get other characters' fans approval, the need for disclaimer: Jason Todd is a Terrible Person, I'm Not Like Other Jason Fans Who Deny That - can you stop? Like what even makes you like him as a character and not a function, if you think he's so terrible, so hypocritical, so this and so that, without any reason or explanation? No, I am serious: what is it that makes him so compelling for you? If he's irredeemable, if he's a loser, if he's all second-hand fanons, if he's a lesser Helena Bertinelli or Selina Kyle or anyone else?

Sception Reads Cass Cain #33
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Harley Quinn (2000) #6 story - Karl Kesel pencils - Terry Dodson & Wayne Faucher inks - Rachel Dodson
Harley Quinn (2000) #10, 11, & 12 story - Karl Kesel pencils - Terry Dodson inks - Rachel dodson
This time we're stepping out of chronological order to cover all of Cass's appearances in the 2000 run of Harley Quinn at once, specifically the issues from May, September, October, and November of 2001. Four issues, but I don't have too much to say about Cass's characterization here.
The Harley Quinn book had a neat gimmick though. This is still pretty fresh off her introduction not in comics but in Batman: the Animated Series, and this book chooses to show Harley's altered world state via an art shift to a more cartoony style using B:tAS's character designs whenever it's showing Harley's perspective, but sticks to more typical comic art otherwise. This is sometimes used for jokes, but more often kind of tragically when people Harley attacks or when members of her crew get hurt (often by Harley), and Harley sees it as no big deal cartoon chicanery only for the perspective to shift and show that the person is seriously injured or dead.
Issue 6 has Harley's Crew and Riddler's Crew accidentally robbing Wayne Manor at the same time. Before the robbery, Harley infiltrates a masquerade party and Bruce clearly recognizes her, but dips out to go Batmanning in town anyway instead of staying to deal with Harley? Or even letting anyone know she's there?
Tumblr media
Am I wrong to read this as Bruce actually recognizing her?
Anyway, Bruce dips out, and Harley's team take out the Manor security and surveillance, including knocking out Bruce's beleaguered bodyguard Sasha Bordeaux (another ancillary female character in the Gotham books at the time who would go on to be treated pretty poorly by the narrative) and her team. The only reason they don't get away with the robbery is the Riddler, who is robbing the same place that night, and, of course, tipped off the authorities (and Oracle) to his crime, because he's like that.
Tumblr media
As for our focus here, Cass is only in this book for a single panel, part of a list of basically every normal bat person who is too busy or too out of town to come deal with the situation.
Tumblr media
Not too much to say one way or the other. Typical 'Cass as spooky silhouette with yellow belt'.
So yeah, not much to say re: Cass in this issue, but it does do that thing I mentioned with the perspective change violence reveal when one of Harley's crew turns on her to collect a bounty and the ensuing fight ends with...
Tumblr media
oh, ha ha funny cartoon explosion knocked her out...
Tumblr media
yeesh.
Anyway, with no one else to call, Babs sends in Big Barda at the end of the issue, who you'd imagine would be more than enough to deal with both Harley and Edward.
And we'll have to imagine, since that issue doesn't have any Cass, so we're skipping forward a bit.
.....
Tumblr media
Issue 10 is part of a mini arc where Harley gets the brilliant idea to impersonate Batgirl.
Tumblr media
specifically Bab's Batgirl.
Tumblr media
Which Cass, and miscellaneous other Bat crew, take issue with. She's looking pretty good here, training as usual.
Tumblr media
The first of the bats Harley encounters is Timm, who she taunts with some sexual innuendos and that late 90s early 00s brand of casual homophobia that certainly hasn't aged like sour milk. Thankfully Cass shows up, and while Harley's no match for her in a fight, she does manage to avoid getting taken down right away, and either dodges in a way that has Cass hitting Tim or misses Cass in a way that hits Tim anyway.
Tumblr media
Basically a terrible showing for Tim all round, who's mostly here to take prat falls and be the butt of jokes, but he kind of deserves it lately (we'll get into that a bit next time), so I'm all for it.
But then there's this bit...
Tumblr media
Harley catches Cass by surprise by saying her name, only... is that even her name at this point? This is, I think, the first time she's been called that in universe that we've seen so far, though Batgirl issues 15 to 18 came before this and we haven't looked at them yet. So if that is her name... since when? David wouldn't have given her a name. She's just 'Batgirl' to Bruce & company. Honestly, choosing a regular person name should have been a big story deal, coinciding with Cass choosing to put value in having a life for herself outside of just being Batgirl, but I guess that never happens.
And even if we just ignore all that and say her real name was Cassandra all along, how the Heck would Harley know that? Eh, maybe she found out in one of the Harley Quinn issues we didn't read.
Tumblr media
Regardless, Harley shoves her off a roof, but Cass pulls her with, and we get this nice panel of Cass smiling through her mask, clearly having as much fun with the fight as Harley is. No stitches in the design from Dodson, I kind of prefer that.
.........
Tumblr media
Next issue the fight proceeds into the street, and Dick shows up, recognizing Harley.
Tumblr media
Even with Dick there, Cass is still the only one getting hits in on Harley, which is a nice recognition of Cass's skills, though you'd think Dick would also be more than a match for Harley in a fight.
Harley manages to steal Dick's motorcycle and turn the fight into a chase scene, which ends up on another rooftop... there's
Tumblr media
there's just so many shenanigans. Lost of shenanigans in this issue. Very fitting for a Harley Quinn fight honestly. And it's fun.
Tumblr media
Not a lot going on with Cass character-wise here. But it is nice to see her in an adventure that's fun & silly. A nice break from her more usual dour & depressed stories, especially at this time.
Anyway they all crash into a bar full of criminals and Harley escapes in the ensuing brawl.
Tumblr media
Later we get this bit where Cass makes fun of Babs & Dick, though I do have to point out that it plays into the theme of her minimizing the importance of personal connections and lives outside of the job. And this contemplative bit from Babs about what it's like for her to watch someone else essentially living her old life through a computer screen. It's good stuff, stuff we could have done with more of in the Batgirl title, which at this point was imo focusing too much on Cass's relationship to Bruce and not enough on her relationship to Babs.
As for Harley, she's done playing Batgirl for now. Her crew convinces her that between criminals after her for some bounty and the Bat crew mad at her over this fiasco there's just too much heat on her in Gotham and she needs to leave an lay low a bit.
Tumblr media
But there's something she thinks she needs to do first, which has her kidnapping one of the two detectives who have featured in earlier issues of her book.
Ivy also shows up at the very end, and everyone always loves those two working together.
Honesly a pretty packed issue all around, and a good bit of Cass this time.
...
Issue 12 is a huge brawl at Harley's hideout as half of her gang turns on her, Oracle finds her base and sends Dick, Tim, & Cass after her, Bruce shows up following an unrelated investigation, and detective guy whose name I don't remember shows up with some backup trying to rescue detective girl. I can't get into all of it since there's so much going on and so little of it involves Cass, but honestly if you like Harley Quinn as a character this run is worth a read.
While there's not as much Cass this time, we do get this moment with her and Bruce:
Tumblr media
I really like the posing in these two panels. I also like the 'I absolutely trust my daughter not to let you shoot her, but I'm still going to punch you for trying' sentiment from Bruce.
There's also this bit where Quinn's most loyal lackey, her favorite, the one you as a reader like if you've been following the title from issue one, tries to use the two detectives as hostages to escape and..
Tumblr media
and of course the person who shot him is...
Tumblr media
Yup, all this mess because Harley shipped the two cops trying to arrest her and thought a kidnap & rescue scenario would finally get them to start dating.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And of course they do the cartoon perspective thing again as he dies.
Harley is captured by the detectives after this, but they hand her off to a mystery bat person...
Tumblr media
Who turns out to be Ivy, who had been conspicuously absent since showing up at the end of the last issue, wearing Harley's Batgirl costume.
Thus ends the 'Harley leading her own crew' run of Harley Quinn, with the next stretch being a Harley and Ivy team up deal.
Pretty good stuff all around, and again nice to see Cass included in something at least a ~little bit~ more lighthearted.

Bold and italicized indicates a favorite released this year.
Matana's is my favorite. I really, really like the Fever Ray album. I forced myself to listen to less music this year than last year. This time last year I was completely fatigued. I broke a lot of habits this year. I have a notebook I've updated yearly since 2011 that lists my first album picked up each year, which albums I had in the car for each month, and every album I've listened to throughout the year that was released that year. Yes, I can tell you what album I had in my car in December 2012. It was Kate Bush's 50 Words For Snow. I didn't keep track of which albums I put in the car this year. I've had various Yellow Swans records in there since October. I also didn't keep track of which 2023 albums I listened to. Last.fm can tell me, but I'm not worried about it.
I have completely stopped listening to the radio, and use Spotify sparsely. My best friends are my external hard drives. I keep identical backups. I don't have THAT much music.
Last year was my jazz year. The goal was to expand beyond the artists I was familiar with. This year was my '90s and early '00s electronic music year. I think I dug a lot more vigorously last year. In fact I said, "Next year I want to start digging through all of the electronic albums the synth bros swear are the most important albums ever made." Some of them I liked, and some of them..... There was a point around June, where I actively recognized my digging around this year wasn't returning as much joy as last year. Autechre, Biosphere, Muslimgauze, and Pan Sonic are the finds whose discographies I've started devouring.
I truly listen to everything, because everything has the potential to be inspiring in someway. The flip side to that is that sometimes I subject myself to stuff I don't like. One of the MTV channels still mainly plays music videos, so sometimes I'll mindlessly watch the latest and greatest music videos to see what's "cool." Most of it is trash. That's how I heard all of these lazy samples people are getting away with.
@knightofleo Andy Stott, sometimes it takes me years to get to recommendations. Yes, you were right. I am taking notes.
I've decided next year I'm going to start with Japanese noise bands and see where they lead me. @the-inevitable-minor-fires and @anarchist-caravan I'm starting with Boris. I've heard very little from them. I'll probably start with Akuma no Uta. I really like Naki Kyoku. Any recommendations from them and other bands to check out? @zombimanos I'm not sure if you go here too, but if so, your input is also welcomed. I am a blank canvas on the subject. It doesn't have to be strictly Japanese noise bands, that's just an area I know has deep veins to mine.
As for my music, I'm drifting between noise and dance. I want my dance tracks to have less structure. If I could describe the sound I'm looking for it's Heart of Aeonia dub. Look up Slowdive's Moussaka Chaos if you haven't heard it. That drunken sound, but more rotted. There's an early Yellow Swans track the eventually evolves into something that sounds like a '90s Busta Ryhmes track. Shackleton also comes to mind. I want to sound murkier, waterlogged. Doom Ambient Techno. This has become a year long project now. I'll make tracks and they feel too far to one side or the other. I planned to do field recordings this year, but never did any away from the house. I might next year.
100 gecs: A now deleted user once said they have no business going so hard. I listen to this a lot at work. Also, hearing a trans woman tell people to suck her dick multiple times puts a smile on my face for some reason.
Editors: I've known this song for years. I have no clue why I suddenly became obsessed with it.
Fiddlehead: I really love the back half of that album.
Interpol: I don't talk about Interpol on here much. Certain Interpol songs make me lose my mind. I intentionally do not listen to them very much.
HEALTH: As a music fan, I like new HEALTH. But goddamn I miss Get Color HEALTH. As a music maker, I listen to new HEALTH and take notes.
JPEGMAFIA & Danny Brown: I hate them. I also wish they mixed their vocals cleaner. I got auditory issues.
Kara Jackson: I am typing this on December 23rd. In December, I relisten to albums released throughout the year in preparation for this list. I listened to Kara's album and Hannah Jadagu's album back to back last week. I've spoken about this many times before, but as a preteen, I wanted to become an artist because I felt like the emotional palette Black people were allowed to express was extremely constricted. As a child I felt that way, 20 plus years later, and now I know you have to scratch beyond the mainstream surface. It's something I still think about a lot, and not just with music. I was much more interested in film when I was younger. Earlier this year, I heard Joe Budden complain about going to a fashion show and all they played was EDM. (I hate that term) He said, there are niggas here, play some Black music. I know that's just who Joe is, but how does he know it wasn't? What does Black music sound like? Kara's Black, is her music not Black? I'm Black, is my music not Black? Are y'all aware there are people who stopped listening to Kanye after Yeezus because it was too White? Like shout out to you for dropping Kanye before the implosion, but what the fuck? I know where these invisible limits on what Black art and even Black people should look like come from, but that doesn't make it any less frustrating to be constantly feeling pressed up against it. As for the album, I love how it starts out simple and slowly adds more complex layers and arrangements. And then you have the title track, which is breathtaking every time. Put down the controller during Elden Ring down every time breathtaking.
Mandy, Indiana: I wish this album went harder. Every time I listen to it there are moments where I'm like MORE! If I can't get Get Color 2 from HEALTH, these guys are a good candidate for it.
Matana Roberts: I feel like Matana deserves a completely separate post for an essay exclusively about her. I'm so glad she's doing this. Her and Aesop occupy a very strange space for me. I actually get nervous when they announce new music. I always have such high hopes. They always deliver, but there's always that thought of how have they evolved since their last release? Yes, I'm aware of how pretentious this sounds. I don't care. I've had many favorite artists evolve to places it's hard to follow, 1980's Miles Davis for example. Hearing her evolution has been a joy, Aesop's too. I listen to Coin Coin Three the most. That's a taking notes album, but I think this is probably her best one. This one feels more intimate to me than the others. Whenever I listen to the album I think about the very ugly fight for abortion and bodily autonomy that's happening here right now, and the gender gap that men know exists, but like racism, must be confronted if acknowledged. So society ignores it, even though it shapes everything about our lives. Throughout the album she repeats the line, "We remember, they forget." The rapes, the abortions, the morning sickness, the second class status, and so on. The women remember what was done to their bodies. The men casually forget.
Pan Sonic: My favorite find going through '90s electronic. I am retooling the modulars to incorporate ideas I've gotten from listening to them. 2024 is violence.
Ross Fish: He created those two noise synths I grabbed this year. I posted the music video for Drugs and Sex on here over the summer. This is a whole fucking mood. His Youtube channel is one of those he's just like me frfr moments. I'm worried about his mental health.

TOP 3 Metal Albums I Enjoyed from 2023
A lot of great metal came out this year and it was hard to narrow it down to my Top 3. There were some great EPs released this year— Spiritbox’s The Fear of Fear, Brand of Sacrifice’s Between Death and Dreams and Knosis’s The Eternal Doom among them. Singles I enjoyed include: "On the Verge" by thrown, “Masterpiece” by The Anchor, “Enemy” by The Gentle Men (ft. Andy Cizek), “Weight of the World” by Harper (ft. We Came as Romans and Brand of Sacrifice), “Viking” by Slaughter To Prevail, "III" by DEATHPHONK (Nik Nocturnal's weird project); and Knocked Loose had the double, “Deep In the Willow”/“Everything is Quiet Now”.
My Top 5 honourable mentions: 5. [m]other by Veil of Maya, their newest does everything I want it to do, good riffs, cool effects, great vocals; 4. Soul Elegy by Termina, Nik Nocturna, Andy Cizek and friends deliver an awesome metal album; 3. Chaos Horrific by Cannibal Corpse is a strong entry and shows why they're still so loved after so long; 2. The Fox and the Bird by Ok Goodnight mixes folk, rock, metal and whatever else they want to create this really entrancing album; and 1. Take Me Back to Eden by Sleep Token is one of the albums I listened to the most because it's easy to put on when you're tired of being relentlessly pummelled by deathcore, but though its highs are super high, it just misses out landing on my top 3 because there are a few spots it lags
3. ...And Everything In Between - Unprocessed
Manuel Gardner Fernandes has quickly become one of my favourite guitarists between this release and Unprocessed's previous album Gold. The combination of styles on this album exemplify modern metal: bludgeoning heaviness, thumpy prog riffing (à la Animals As Leaders or Polyphia) and a mix of harsh and clean vocals. Despite the polish of these 9 tracks, some express such raw emotion and a ferocity that they really get me hyped up. The variety of tones and vocals kept me engaged throughout, and they blend and balance heaviness and melody so well. The guitar sounds so angry sometimes–especially the part of "Thrash" where Manuel beats the shit outta his guitar after screaming, "But you're just a fucking lie!" I love that. Other songs like "Blackbone" and "Die on the Cross of the Martyr" continue the trend of excellent instrumentation, the latter featuring guest solos by Polyphia's Tim Henson and Scottie Lepage. It's so well done and so engaging. In the short time I've had this album, it's become one of my favourites of 2023.
2. Periphery V: Djent Is Not A Genre - Periphery
When Periphery released "Wildfire" as a single I immediately bought into what they were selling. The way they transition through the various parts is seamless, the mix of vocal techniques and the jazzy interlude are all fantastic. It really captures the spirit of the whole record. Songs like "Dying Star" and "Zagreus" are also so hard. Periphery continues to show off their musical dexterity, and the band members prove once again they're not only some of the best musicians djenting their way through the world but as a collective they add up to more than the sum of their parts. My hottest take when it comes to this album is that I love "Silhouette" — it's like if you ran 80s soft rock and 90s/00s boy bands through a progressive music filter. I think they wrote this song and put it on the album just to prove they can do anything. And if Periphery is Djent, and Djent isn't a genre then why shouldn't they go in every genre direction they want to explore?
1. War of Being - TesseracT
In other years this top 3 could have been entirely deathcore or melodeath or metalcore, but this year it was djenty prog metal through and through. It's the music I gravitated to the most this year and nobody did it better than TesseracT. Daniel Tompkins vocals are incredible throughout, his cleans sounding particularly great on "Echoes" – giving us one of the best choruses before following it up with another great one on "The Grey". The album offers engaging lyricism throughout and the instrumentation is at a pedigree one would expect for a band in the vanguard of this genre. The album gives us atmospheric moments, synths, meditative passages before blasting us with metal. In many ways the whole album does what the best tracks on Sleep Token's Take Me Back To Eden do. Each song and the album as a whole provide an expansive experience. And that's why it's my number one. More than any other album released this year, TesseracT's War of Being makes me want to sit down and listen to it from beginning to end.
Other great albums: SUPERBLOOM by Silent Planet; Fatalism by Polaris; Feral by Left To Suffer; Foregone by In Flames; Ashen by Humanity's Last Breath; The Sin of Human Frailty by END; Symptoms of Survival by Dying Wish; and The Death We Seek by Currents.

damijon, timsteph, dickroy and rosecassie (as in wondergirl lol <3) for the ship bingo xoxo
OUSGISSHJ i could write literal essays abt each one of these
1)
okay so i have very mixed emotions about this one, bc on one hand i feel like in main continuity it wouldn't work out, but maybe in like an elseworlds thing it could??? but im also very much a fan of them not being romantic but not also being traditionally platonic so i just settle for calling them "a secret, more sinister third thing". also they're both trans. so like. t4t best friendship that only they (and me) really #Get. i just have so many complicated feelings about their lore and friendship and how damian's friendships are so inherently complex because of how he operates on a personal level and jon simply understanding and not needing damian to change a thing, they're just so content existing w each other and within each others spaces. i very much appreciate how even after all the change they've gone thru they're still close and care about each other, and i am also a massive fan of them both getting along with each others People
Tumblr media
2)
OH LORD OK TIMSTEPH OK i don't think ive ever actually talked abt them before, but i should. they're t4t bi4bi most definitely. i actually did enjoy their relationship to an extent while they were dating but it wasn't entirely my cup of tea bc i tend to ship them w other people but the appeal was definitely there, like it was clear how much they cared for each other, its cute and its there and i can get behind it. i do actually prefer their dynamic as exes because of how rare it is to see m/f friendships without ulterior motives on either part, ESPECIALLY if the characters in question are exes, so it's actually refreshing to see them still have a caring dynamic without secretly being hung up on each other. i also think tim's regret over ending it the way he did was nice to see, because while it wasn't out of character to ghost her it also wasn't out of character for him to look back and realize "i could/should have handled that better" so i feel like it does well to convey how he does actually still love her even if not romantically anymore
Tumblr media
3)
H. HHHH. SHAKES THEM
i feel like their dynamic in preboot comics is a hell of a lot better than anything the new 52 or rebirth had to offer. i miss when roy and donna were dick's best friends honestly. i feel like their relationship was sidelined a lot in favor of jason and roy and dick and wally which sucks because??? they were fine as they were?? they've got a lot of love and care for each other, especially in the 80s and 90s comics, they're always complimenting each other and telling each other how well they're doing but they're also not afraid to call each other out if one of them does some stupid shit, i think thats good for both of them. i also think roy's relationship w the bats would be funny, as well as dick's relationship with the arrows. they've both got similar family dynamics but also very different in a loooot of ways
Tumblr media
4) NOBODY EVER TALKS ABOUT THIS SHIP SO *IM* GOING TO
i literally can't get over their rivalry, like they hated each other so much but also there was just something so unexplainable about them to me??? like idk i just always loved how they interacted even when they were arguing and fighting. i just KNOW if dc let cassie be butch in the 00s during the peak of their rivalry they would have kissed. i feel it in my bones. it's also nice to see since they've both got more complex relationships w the people around them it would be nice to see them sorta bounce off of each other in the respect that they've got a lot going on and they know how the other feels so they bond over the struggles of navigating relationships and friendships and just life in general. i also think it'd be funny to watch diana smack slade for saying smthn out of pocket at like an in laws family dinner or some other gathering but thats mostly just bc i think slade should be smacked in general

Summary: Tim probably shouldn’t have gone back to his dad’s penthouse alone after the night he had. Thankfully, Alfred has his number, and enough sense to call Dick for help.
Relationships: Tim Drake & Dick Grayson, Tim Drake & Alfred Pennyworth, Dick Grayson/Koriand’r
Characters: Tim Drake, Dick Grayson, Alfred Pennyworth, Koriand’r, Bruce Wayne, Leslie Thompkins, Stephanie Brown (mentioned)
Words: 6,296 — Chapters: 1/1
This fic follows directly from events in Robin Vol. 2 (1993) #3-5, during the Knightfall arc in 90s Batman comics, but the events are described in this enough that it can hopefully be read without reading those comics if you want. This is kind of a fix-it for Tim having zero actual support during this time, and also because I love older brother Dick Grayson. The medical stuff in this might not be totally accurate but I’m just hoping it’s better than Chuck Dixon’s.

Tim’s head hurt.
He’d been hoping it’d go away once he’d gotten some fresh air, but even though he felt better than he had when he’d been down there, suffocating and trapped in a buried truck after completely misreading Cluemaster’s nasty plan to bury the stolen money under cement…he still didn’t feel back to normal. His chest ached, he felt out of breath, and sweat still clung to his skin despite the frigid air he’d just stumbled in from.
Tim shivered as he sluggishly changed into sweats, shoving his Robin suit into the closet with less care than he usually took.
At least he didn’t have Mrs. Mac to worry about. For a brief moment half an hour ago, he’d almost headed home on instinct, before he remembered staying at his dad’s Mooney Towers penthouse for…some reason. He knew he was staying at the penthouse right now, that’s what mattered.
What time was it now, anyway?
Dizziness and fatigue interrupted Tim’s thought, and he sat against the wall, rubbing his head. He needed to catch his breath. He hadn’t really gotten a chance yet, between dealing with Cluemaster’s buddies, his awkward interaction with Steph, and then having to book it home before the police got on scene. His breath came out in pants from the night’s exertion, and Tim closed his eyes to focus on recovering his breath.
He needed sleep, but his bed felt too far. Tim curled up on the floor a little. He’d be fine staying here for a bit. Not like Mrs Mac or Alfred were around to catch him snoozing on the floor, right?
His head hurt. His chest hurt. He needed sleep.

“Something wrong?”
Alfred glanced up at Bruce’s voice, worn from little sleep and poor health. Alfred frowned and turned back to his phone. “It’s Master Timothy. I called him when we settled things earlier, to tell him about his father, but he never answered. Not even a text.”
“Maybe he went to bed early?” Bruce suggested, setting down the papers he’d been studying. “It’s not even dawn yet in Gotham, he could’ve been sleeping.”
Alfred scrolled through the text messages again. “That’s not much like him. He’s off school, and with his worry about his father I would be surprised if his propensity for working late has been curbed. I first called him at 21:00 Gotham time, and I’ve only once managed to get the boy in bed that early.”
Bruce grunted in acknowledgment, turning back to his workspace. “Did you call Mrs. Mac earlier?”
Alfred’s mouth pressed into a thin line before he admitted a large motivator for his increased worry over a few missed calls. “She said he has been out of town for vacation the past several days and she hasn’t spoken to him.”
A pause. “He seemed to talk like he was still in Gotham when he called yesterday.”
“Precisely, sir. I do believe he may have misled her.”
Bruce hummed at that, and tapped some keys on his laptop. “Maybe he’s been staying at the Manor, then, with Jean Paul.”
Alfred hummed doubtfully at that. When Tim had last called, he had privately admitted to difficulties with Jean Paul. It was possible he’d choose to stay at the Manor to mend those difficulties, but Alfred had gotten the distinct impression Tim was holding back more than he let on.
Bruce finally spun his chair again to observe where Alfred stood primly by the window, phone clutched in hand. “You have a bad feeling.”
He needed no response. Over the years, Alfred had learned to trust his instincts when it came to his brood of bats. And today, the foreboding in his chest was enough to make Alfred wary of the radio silence, even at a time Tim should be resting peacefully in bed.
Still, no use panicking when plenty could be done to check if all was truly well.
“I’ll call him again. Perhaps he returned from a late patrol and neglected to check his messages.” Alfred stepped away from Bruce’s workspace, and Bruce nodded, taking the cue to continue his work while Alfred did his.
Usually, calling someone during what should be the pre-dawn hours of their time zone would cause Alfred some hesitance. Yet, as he waited for the line to pick up, he felt no such polite inclination. Besides, he rationalized, if it turned out he’d only woken Timothy from a good night’s rest, he was certain Tim would be glad to hear news of his father’s retrieval, despite the hour.
The line clicked, and a familiar 14-year old’s voice came through in a sleepy mumble. “Hello?”
Relief swooped through Alfred’s stomach and brought a soft smile to his face. “Master Tim. I apologize if I’ve awoken you.”
A quiet hum, then, “‘s alright.”
Alfred paused, trying to give Tim a moment to wake up. He relaxed a little, as he imagined it the way he’d seen it in those months Tim stayed with them at the Manor. Hair ruffled, eyes droopy, clothes messy. If he’d gotten to sleep after a late patrol, he likely wouldn’t be fully awake until noon, but now that Alfred had him on the phone, he felt compelled to keep him there. “I have news about your father. We found him late last night. He’s unwell, but alive.”
Another hum. Alfred frowned. “Master Tim? Did you hear?”
There was a pause, before Tim’s mumbling voice said, “Sorry. I don’t…what?”
“We found your father. He’s in hospital here in London.”
Tim hummed again, then coughed a little. “Um. Right. ’s cool…”
The earlier relief soured back into concern, and Alfred narrowed his eyes. “Tim? Are you quite alright?”
“…Yeah.”
Alfred grimaced, remembering that Tim possessed a similar trait to Dick and Bruce in that he sometimes attempted to feign health even in great peril. Perhaps Tim was simply tired at this hour, but Alfred was nothing if not stubborn in these matters.
“Where are you at the moment, Master Tim?”
Silence held over the phone line for a concerning time before Tim said, “I’m at…dad’s Mooney Towers place.”
Alfred didn’t know of such a location, but he made note of it before continuing. “Did you patrol earlier?”
Tim hummed yet again. “Think so.”
“Are you injured at all?”
Another round of silence, and the tension built up in Alfred’s body at the slow answer. “Dunno,” Tim finally said, and Alfred’s instincts were instantly on overdrive. “Prob’ly ‘kay. Feel kinda…funny. ’m so tired…”
Alfred carefully controlled his breathing. “Is there anyone with you, Master Tim?”
“Umm…huh?”
“Are you alone?”
Tim paused. “Yeah.”
Alfred couldn’t stop the fearful flutter in his chest at the idea that something could be wrong and he was thousands of kilometers away from this beloved child who had no one else checking up on him. The haunting memory of learning Jason had been killed without Bruce or himself there to keep him safe sprung to Alfred’s mind against his will.
Perhaps there was nothing wrong. But he couldn’t take that chance.
Realizing the phone line had been silent for some time, Alfred quickly said, “Tim? Are you still listening?”
Silence. Then a mumble that couldn’t be distinguished over the phone.
Alfred continued, “I want you to stay where you are. I…I’d like to know you’re safe.”
No response this time. Alfred held his breath in an attempt to listen more closely, and in doing so finally realized he could faintly hear Tim’s breathing on the other end. He hoped he was imagining that it sounded too shallow and too fast for Tim to merely be sleeping.
Alfred nearly ran back to Bruce’s office space, phone still on call in his hand. He turned the phone to speaker mode just as Bruce looked up at him with knitted eyebrows.
“Master Bruce, please search for a Mooney Towers property owned by the Drakes, as quickly as you can. And if you could point me in the direction of another cell…?”
Bruce, bless him, instantly gauged his urgency and without hesitation handed Alfred a phone before turning back to his computers and starting a new search.
Alfred took a steadying breath, sitting in a nearby chair as he entered a familiar number into the phone. He could only hope his call would get a quick answer, because he felt rather short on people he could trust to handle whatever situation he feared they may be running into.
Blessedly, it took only two rings for a slightly aggrieved voice to come over the line. “Yes?”
“Master Dick,” Alfred said. “I apologize for the hour, but if at all possible, I require your help in an important matter.”
Alfred heard shifting fabric over the line before Dick’s voice came much clearer and wide awake. “What’s wrong?”
“It may be paranoia, but I fear Master Tim is unwell and with no one to check on him. We’ve learned he seems to be staying alone at one of his father’s properties, and when I called him, his behavior was quite concerning.”
Dick listened with rapt attention as Alfred further explained the nearly one sided conversation with Tim. He felt Bruce’s concerned listening across the room as Alfred added, “Master Bruce is finding the address just now. If you’ll indulge me to check on young Master Tim as soon as possible while I’m here in London, it’d be much appreciated.”
“Of course,” Dick said at once. His voice moved away from the phone to speak to someone else, then returned as clear as before. “Tell me the address and Kory can fly me over right now.”
A wave of appreciation came over Alfred, for both Dick and the kind woman who’d become such a fixture in Dick’s life these past few years. “I’m glad to hear it. Thank you, dear boy.”

Dick tugged on his shoes with practiced speed and scoured the bedroom for his thick jacket as Kory pulled a compact first aid kit from under the bed. “Thanks for this, Kory. Sorry for waking you.”
Kory walked over with the kit in hand and Dick could feel more than see her smile in the dim lighting from the window. “I’ll sleep later. He seems like a good kid. I know you worry for him.”
Dick grimaced a little and held close to Kory as she lifted him in flight from the window of their apartment. He didn’t voice the vivid nightmares about Jay that still interrupted his sleep over a year after his death. Kory was more aware of those nightmares than anyone else.
They flew in silence for a while, the chill wind whipping past them. It wouldn’t take long to get from Manhattan to downtown Gotham at this speed. Kory held him securely in her arms by his knees and upper back, with Dick holding the first aid kit in one hand while his other was slung across Kory’s shoulders. Though they were flying fairly high, it wouldn’t have been too difficult for someone in the city to spot them, and Dick felt a now-familiar appreciation for the stunt they’d pulled a while ago so people knew Dick Grayson was dating Starfire and that Nightwing wasn’t so happy about that relationship. Although Dick hadn’t enjoyed the publicity that had followed that reveal, having Kory able to fly with him as Dick instead of Nightwing without worrying about his identity…it definitely outweighed the downsides of media scrutiny.
Dick tilted his head to watch the skyline toward Gotham, his thoughts beginning to linger on unpleasant memories and worries.
“Sometimes I’m scared I encourage him too much,” Dick finally admitted. Kory gave no reaction, but he could tell this was something she wanted him to voice. Wanted him to share, rather than lock these words away to haunt his sleep later. She’d always preferred honesty. “I always…it’s not that I think it’ll be better for him if I don’t support him, but…I used to encourage Jay in being Robin whenever I talked to him about it. And even when I think I’ve gotten over feeling like if I’d talked him down from it a little, he’d still be…I just wonder sometimes if like, when Tim last came to see me, I should have told him to at least take a break from being Robin while Bruce is away. I don’t…”
Dick tilted his head into Kory’s shoulder, soaking up the comforting feeling of her warm skin against his chilled cheek. “I don’t want him to go out because I told him he could handle it only for him to get hurt while I’m not there to keep him safe.”
I don’t want him to get killed while I’m off in space thinking he’s fine. I don’t want to lose another kid like we lost Jay.
Kory looked down at him, her bright green eyes reflecting the lights below as her faint smile glowed with the flames of her hair trails. “You’re trying to keep him safe just like this, Dick. He needs someone who will listen to him and encourage him just as much as he needs someone to watch his back. I don’t think Earth is so different from Tamaran that young children are not safer when they have someone they can trust to talk to without being judged or demeaned.”
Dick took a deep breath, closing his eyes for a moment, then opening them again and squeezing her hand. “You’re…you amaze me, you know that? Kory…” Dick felt a steadiness in his chest that’d been missing in the last few weeks, while the two of them had been struggling in their relationships as they left the Titans. “Kory, whatever we decide to do, I want you to be happy. That’s what I want. Even if…”
Kory smiled. “I know, Dick.” Her eyes then left his to peer down at the ground. “We’re above Gotham. Do you see it?”
It took a few minutes of navigating in the dark and Dick peering at a digital map of the buildings, before he saw the one that looked right. They landed on the roof, and Dick felt himself falling quickly back into field readiness as they slipped through the sliding roof access door.
The penthouse was all too easy to get into, and small enough that finding Tim’s room wasn’t difficult. The place seemed empty, but Kory and Dick still stood ready to blast sunbursts and wingdings into the room if anything seemed dangerous while Dick cracked open the door.
Nothing. Nothing but a dark room covered in a teen’s belongings and—and a small body on the floor.
Dick’s breath caught in his throat and he rushed over, kneeling beside Tim and scanning his limp figure as Kory set the first aid kit down nearby.
Tim lay prone on his stomach with his head turned to one side and his phone held loosely in one hand near his head. Kory turned on the light, revealing Tim’s pale skin, with a light sheen of sweat. He wore only a pair of shorts and a thin tank top, and his skin was cold to the touch as Dick pressed fingers to his neck. His pulse was slow, and Dick bit his lip. He wasn’t sure whether it was slower than Tim’s usual resting heart rate. It seemed in the range of an athlete, if on the low side. But his breath was short, slightly wheezing. Certainly, his position couldn’t be doing his breathing any good. After another check of Tim’s body, Dick gently rolled him onto his side into the recovery position to clear his airway, then listened again. Better, but still not great. At least he wasn’t finding any sign of bleeding, though the downside of so much of Tim’s skin being visible to see there were no obvious lacerations was that he had little protection from the cold air in the room.
“He feels really cold and I don’t like how he’s breathing,” Dick said. “Kory, could you—?”
A blanket dangled in front of him, and Dick sent Kory a grateful smile before laying it out over Tim’s body. He checked his pulse again (no change), then lightly shook Tim’s shoulder. “Tim? Can you hear me?”
No response, though maybe his eyebrow crinkled a bit. Worry wrung Dick’s gut, and he looked up at Kory, mouth set seriously. “Kory, if I give you the address, can you take him quicker with me or without me?”
“I fly faster carrying only one person, but…”
Dick pulled out his phone and quickly showed her directions to the Thompkins Clinic. “You can come back to get me once you get him to Leslie—she runs it, and I’ll call her while I’m waiting. She probably knows his identity, and she knows mine, so don’t worry about that. Just get him there as carefully and quickly as you can.”
Kory nodded and gave him a reassuring squeeze on the shoulder before she wrapped Tim more tightly in the blanket with Dick’s help and held him bridal carry. He followed her to the roof access, where she flew into the crisp night air as Dick held his phone to his ear and waited for the call to pick up.
“Dick? Is that you?” came Leslie’s voice. Despite the hour, she sounded wide awake, honed from years of being Bruce’s second go-to doctor after Alfred.
“Yeah, hey,” Dick said, the sound of her voice relieving a bit of the tension from his shoulders. “I’ve got Starfire headed over to you with Robin. I don’t know what happened, but we found him cool to the touch and unconscious on the floor, and Alfred said when he called him a while ago, he seemed disoriented.”
Leslie, bless her, was all business, just as Dick wanted her to be. “I’ll start prepping the usual space. Did you get his vitals when you arrived? Notice any visible bleeding?”
“No visible bleeding, heart rate around 33 BPM, his breathing was kind of shallow and he was wheezing a little but that eased when I put him in the recovery position.”
“When did Alfred talk to him?”
“He said it was almost 3:30 our time. He was talking to Alfred for a few minutes, then went quiet. Starfire and I took about half an hour to get here.”
“Will you be coming to the clinic?”
“Starfire will come back for me to bring me over, if you don’t need her there.”
There was a pause on the line, then Leslie said, “Wow. I see her. She’s fast.”
Dick closed his eyes and leaned against the wall, taking a deep breath. “Yeah.”
“I’ll see you in a bit, Dick.”
“Bye.”
The call ended and Dick folded his arms, opening his eyes to stare out through the glass door into the familiar night lights of the city. The sounds were muffled up here, so the skyline felt almost calm, nothing like the chaos Dick had encountered night after night when he was still part of the dynamic duo.
Don’t think about Jason. Don’t think about Jason. This isn’t like that.
Dick exhaled and tried to imagine his nightmares leaving him with the air.

“It’ll be another couple of hours with the NIV before his blood should be cleared and his oxygen levels are back to normal,” Leslie said as she readjusted the thermal blanket over Tim. “He might wake before then, but I’d wager he’ll still be exhausted so he could sleep longer.”
“Right,” Dick said. He was standing off to the side, with Kory by his shoulder. Tim lay on the bed with his skin less pale than it was half an hour ago, but his eyes still closed and a non-invasive ventilator covering his lower face. The room itself was nearly the same as it looked several years ago, tucked away in the clinic where Gotham’s vigilantes could recover away from prying eyes.
Leslie picked up some equipment and gave Dick a soft smile and pat on his shoulder that reminded him a bit too much of Alfred. “I’ll be back to check on him in a bit. You should call the others. It’s good to see you, Dick.”
He returned the smile easily. “You too, Leslie.”
She left, and Kory slipped her hand in his as he glanced at Tim’s still form before meeting Kory’s eyes.
“Are you alright?” she asked.
Dick raised an eyebrow. “I’ll be fine.” He paused, then turned to slowly pull her into a hug. She reciprocated without hesitation, arms wrapping around him perfectly as if meant to be there. Her chin pressed against the top of his hair and his arms warmed from the weight of her hair against them.
“Don’t feel like you have to stay for me,” Dick said softly. “I’ll just be waiting, and I have to call Alfred and Bruce, anyway. Go see Donna.” He paused. “Well, maybe get some sleep and then see Donna, when you won’t be waking her at hours that’ll get you smacked with a pillow.”
Kory breathed a laugh then pulled back from the hug with his shoulders held in her hands. Her smile glowed, as it always did. “I will. I suggest you sleep, too. You’ve hardly slept much in the past week, dealing with my dreams. And call me when he wakes up. I want to know he’s alright.”
“Got it,” Dick said, squeezing her hand before stepping away. “I’ll talk to you later. And, uh, I don’t know how long I’ll be here, but can we meet up soon? Just…to talk. Even if we both end up needing…space, I still want us to be able to talk.”
Kory pulled some sunglasses from her pocket and grinned as she put them on. “Call me.”
Kory left Dick with a lighter feeling in his chest than he’d had the past few weeks, but he still sat in a chair by the wall with a knot in his stomach. He pulled out his phone and made another call.
“Have you any news?” Alfred asked.
“He’s alive and stable.” Dick couldn’t see Alfred, but he knew him well enough to imagine the ease of tension from his shoulders at that. “We had to take him to Leslie’s, though. He’s been unconscious, but she said he’ll probably wake later today.”
There was a pause and murmur of voices on the other end, then the phone was obviously put on speaker or handed over because the audio shifted before Bruce’s voice could be heard over the line. “What happened?”
Dick grimaced and watched Tim’s chest rise and fall, with the mask feeding oxygen to his body. “We won’t know how until Tim can tell us, but Leslie says carbon dioxide and monoxide poisoning and oxygen deprivation paired with some mild hypothermia and some bruising. He looked like he might’ve collapsed in the penthouse after patrol.”
A pause as Bruce and Alfred seemed to process the information. “He’s been unconscious since you found him?” Bruce asked.
“Yeah. Leslie’s giving him oxygen to reduce the carbon monoxide levels. They were…pretty high. He…” Dick pressed his lips together. Now that he was talking to Bruce, he had to hold himself back from harshly voicing all the things he’d wanted to say to Bruce the past hour, the past month, the past few years. But he didn’t want to say it over the phone, and he definitely didn’t want to end up yelling in this room when Tim needed to rest.
Still, he needed to say something .
“He’s just a kid, Bruce. He shouldn’t have been alone,” Dick finally said.
A pause. Dick watched Tim breathe and tapped his fingers against his chair’s frame.
“You’re right,” Bruce said quietly.
They were all silent for a moment, and Dick couldn’t prevent Jason from floating back to the forefront of his mind again. He didn’t mean to be thinking of Jay so often when he saw Tim, but this situation was bringing back memories of coming home from space only to learn his little brother was six feet under. Now, he’d been sleeping while the new Robin was—
Kory was right. He couldn’t let his fears stop him from being there for Tim. He wanted to hang out with Tim and do the things he did with Jason, and all the things they’d never gotten a chance to do. And now that he wasn’t in the Titans anymore, and he and Kory were thinking about taking a break from their partnership, maybe…maybe he could leave New York, stay nearby for a while.
Well, whatever happened, he wasn’t going to let another Robin die.

Tim woke up feeling fuzzy and sore.
He blinked blurriness from his eyes, brow crinkling at the unfamiliar ceiling above his head. He could feel a firm bed beneath him, and a strangely warm blanket (heated?) laid over him. Something was beeping near his head, and something else moved with his finger when he shifted his hand.
“Tim?”
Tim’s head snapped over to the right. Dick sat leaning forward in a chair by the bed, a book on his lap.
“Hey, how you feeling?” Dick said.
Tim realized he was staring and hurriedly cleared his throat to speak, only to find his mouth extremely dry.
“Oh, here.” Dick stretched to grab a bottle of water on the floor behind him. “Can you sit up?” he asked, uncapping the bottle.
Tim shifted until he could prop himself up on his elbows and scoot back to lean against the wall behind him, wincing with the soreness of his muscles and the fatigue weighing him down. Dick adjusted the pillow behind his back as he did, then handed him the water. A few sips later, Tim felt marginally better, at least enough to glance around and recognize the thing pulling at his finger was a pulse monitor, also the cause of the beeping.
He finally met eyes with Dick, who was watching him from the seat by his bed. “What happened?” Tim asked.
Dick held out his hand for Tim to hand back the bottle, and capped it again as he said, “What do you remember, Tim?”
“Umm…” Tim thought back through the remaining fogginess in his brain. “Well, I…I went to take down the Cluemaster, then I went back to the…to my dad’s penthouse.” He gave Dick a questioning look, but Dick’s expression remained fairly neutral.
“Do you remember Alfred calling you?”
Tim blinked. “Uh…maybe?” Not really. “Dick, where are we? Why am I…what are you doing here?”
Dick leaned further back in his chair, adopting a more relaxed pose. “We’re at Thomas Wayne Memorial Clinic. You know Leslie?”
“Yeah. Bruce introduced us.”
Dick nodded. “Before I tell you anything else, can you give me a better idea of what happened before you returned to the penthouse?”
Tim tried to hide his cringe at that, and he couldn’t help but look away from Dick. He didn’t want to tell his hero how he’d made such a rookie mistake and almost failed everyone.
“Tim?”
Something in Dick’s voice made Tim turn to meet Dick’s eyes again. Suddenly, he felt like the toddler sat on an acrobat’s knee, looking into eyes too kind to disbelieve.
“I’m not going to judge you,” Dick said. “We promised, remember? You remember you’re a kid, and I won’t treat you like one. I won’t think badly of you for anything that happened, but I want to help you, and I can do that best if you talk to me.”
Tim took a steadying breath and tried to figure out where to start. “Um…do you know the Spoiler?”
Dick blinked, and his eyebrow creased. “No?”
“Well, the Cluemaster has a daughter, and she became the Spoiler a while ago to kind of…stop his schemes.”
Dick sat back in his chair again, settling in for Tim’s explanation. Tim wasn’t sure if Stephanie was really relevant to what Dick needed to know, but then again, he wasn’t totally sure what Dick wanted and he didn’t want to leave her out. “I see,” Dick said.
“Bruce doesn’t want her to keep being Spoiler, since she’s pretty much an amateur at this point, but I’ve been…uh, hanging out with her sometimes. And I ran into her while I was looking into the Cluemaster’s latest scheme. She was trying to get him too, so we decided to work the case together.”
He paused for a moment, picking at a stray thread on what he was now realizing was the hospital patient clothing he was wearing.
“Um, but when I figured out the Cluemaster and his buddies were going to steal this money truck, I didn’t want Stephanie—that’s her name, I mean—I didn’t want her to be part of the fight, but I knew I couldn’t beat all three of them on my own, so I waited until the Cluemaster was alone and I ambushed him in the armored truck.”
Tim grimaced. “It, uh, turned out I hadn’t quite figured out his whole plan. His pals came back and…they dumped the truck in a pit and filled it with cement, so it’d be hidden from the cops for a while until they came back for it.”
The room went silent for a moment as Dick seemed to absorb this and Tim tried not to cringe again at having revealed one of his biggest mistakes of the night.
“You…so you were in the truck when they covered it in cement?” Dick finally said, his voice sounding strained.
Tim glanced over at Dick, then away. “Yeah.”
Dick stared at him with a glint in his eyes Tim didn’t recognize, and Tim shifted uncomfortably. Dick seemed to notice this, because the glint went away a little and he asked, “What happened next?”
“Well, I think I was knocked unconscious for a minute or two when they dumped the truck in. I figured out they were using the cement, but my comm wasn’t working, so I tried to hole out in there with the Cluemaster until hopefully…” Tim hesitated, not wanting to voice the hours he spent on and off dwelling on how he probably wouldn’t be found until he was dead. “I had to knock the Cluemaster out at first, because he was panicking, and after he woke up he still fell asleep, and then after a while, I think I passed out. I don’t think it was long, though. I woke up when they started breaking up the cement to collect the money. I think Steph might’ve chased them there, because she was out there when I knocked one of them out and got up, and then…”
Tim’s face heated as he remembered a part of the disastrous case that he’d nearly forgotten in his hazy state. “I uh, I accidentally kissed her? I didn’t mean to, I wasn’t even thinking, I already have a girlfriend, I was just so relieved she found me, and—I made an absolute mess.” Tim buried his face in his hands, completely avoiding Dick and feeling the embarrassment and fear rolling through him. Oh, goodness, Ariana. He already had a girlfriend, and it wasn’t Steph, and he’d just kissed —
“Hey.” A heavy hand rested on his shoulder, and Tim risked a peak at Dick, who looked far more understanding than Tim probably deserved. “Don’t worry too much about it. You were ill, Tim. You definitely weren’t thinking clearly, and once you’re back to full health, I’m sure we can figure out how to talk to your girlfriend and Stephanie about it.”
The words calmed some of the anxiety buzzing in Tim’s head, but as he processed them, Tim frowned at Dick. “What do you mean, I was ill? I felt fine before I got stuck in the truck, I just needed some fresh air and sleep after that…”
The serious expression on Dick’s face made Tim go quiet. “Tim…I’m guessing you headed home after you kissed her, right?”
“Uh…yeah. The cops showed up just in time,” Tim mumbled.
“Do you remember anything after you got to the penthouse?”
Tim hesitated, then lifted one shoulder in a shrug.
Dick didn’t seem surprised, and he moved on. “Alfred called you, then he called me because he could tell something was wrong over the phone. Kory and I found you passed out on the floor and we took you here.”
Tim opened his mouth, then realized he didn’t know what he could say, and closed it again, looking down at his blanket. His cheeks flamed at the idea of Starfire and Nightwing finding him passed out on the floor like…the whole idea was possibly more embarrassing than getting stuck in the truck.
“Tim.” Dick’s voice made him look up again. “How long were you under the cement?”
At least Tim knew the answer to that question; he’d kept careful track most of the time he’d been down there. “About…five hours.”
Dick leaned over in his chair and pulled some papers off a side table, then turned back to Tim with that serious look in his face that Tim was getting used to seeing. “You got carbon monoxide and dioxide poisoning from being trapped in the truck, Tim. You were deprived of oxygen and dehydrated, and you were still feeling symptoms when you kissed Stephanie and when you headed to the penthouse.”
“Well—” Tim bit his lip. He knew that, mostly. He’d been keeping track of his symptoms while he’d been in there. That was how he knew how close he was to running out of air. He’d gotten enough medical training from Alfred and Bruce to recognize symptoms like that, but—
“Why were you staying at that penthouse alone, Tim?” Dick asked.
Tim’s head snapped up to look at him. “What does that have to do with anything?”
“I just want to know.”
Tim shrugged, his legs itching to move around after lying in the bed talking for so long. “It’s closer to the action, and it made it easier to be Robin without Mrs. Mac around. Plus, Bruce and my dad were gone, and Jean Paul kicked me out of the cave, so…I just told Mrs. Mac I was on vacation with my friend. It’s not like I don’t have plenty of my dad’s money to pay for food on my own.”
Dick closed his eyes for a moment, breathing in, before he opened them to meet Tim’s again. “This kind of thing is pretty serious, Tim. Yes, it’s good to get fresh air and sleep, but you’re always supposed to seek medical attention after something like that. Even I should go to Star Labs or Raven or Alfred or at least visit someone who can check up on me. Again, I…I’m not judging you for doing things wrong or something like that—but I do want you to understand that Kory and I brought you here for a reason. It takes a lot of oxygen to get rid of the levels of carbon monoxide and dioxide you had in your blood. Leslie had you on oxygen for a little over six hours, and you slept for another two after that. You could’ve…”
Dick cut himself off, lips pressing tightly together for a moment before he continued, “There’s a reason Batman and Robin are partners, remember. We…all of the Bats, I mean, we’re supposed to support each other. When Bruce went off the deep end after Jason, you came to me. I want you to feel like you can come to me when you’re the one going off the deep end, too. Or even just to talk.”
Tim started, eyes a little wide, and then looked down at his blanket again. He didn’t know how to respond to that. He definitely didn’t know how to respond to Dick Grayson saying that, the same person Tim had spent most of his life dreaming that he’d comfort Tim when he got nightmares, and now those dreams were real and Tim didn’t know how to react.
“I…I don’t know how to do that,” Tim said quietly, wincing a little at the admission. “I’ve never…I mean, before you guys, there wasn’t really anyone I could just…call. My parents were never very good at calling to just…catch up. And there’s so many other people who need more help than I do, how am I supposed to…?”
Dick’s eyes were warm as he shifted out of his chair to sit on the edge of Tim’s bed. He rocked his shoulder lightly against Tim’s in a playful way. “Hey, we can’t save anybody else if we aren’t saved first. Wasn’t that how you met me? Bruce swooped in to help me when my parents died. And—I don’t know how much you figured out about how Bruce found Jason, but he needed help too. And I doubt Batman would exist if Alfred wasn’t there. I mean, you saved Batman last year. Don’t you think, maybe sometimes, you’re the one who might need help before you can help anyone else?”
Tim opened his mouth slightly to respond, but the words were lost in his throat, so he swallowed. After a moment, he leaned into Dick’s side and rested his head against his shoulder. Dick wrapped his arm around Tim, and the warmth seemed to ease the chill in Tim’s limbs more than the heated blanket. He closed his eyes.
“Dick,” he said.
“Yeah?”
“Thanks. For finding me…I guess staying alone at the penthouse was a bit lonely.”
Tim could almost feel Dick smiling at that. “Anytime, Timmy. Just rest now. I’ll be here.”
Author's Note:
Hope you enjoyed. I welcome all sorts of comments even if it's just, like, a heart emoji. Feel free to rant at me about Dick and Tim's brotherhood in the comments, bc truly I love them.
Comics referenced in this fic, for anyone interested:
Robin v2 #3-5 (Tim gets trapped in a truck under cement)
Batman: Shadow of the Bat #23 (Alfred and Bruce find Jack Drake and get him to the hospital in London)
Showcase '93 #11-12 (Dick & Tim work on a case together, and Dick promises he won't treat Tim as a kid if Tim remembers he is one)
The New Titans #95-96 (Dick & Kory make their civilian relationship public and ensure that the media thinks Nightwing is jealous so Dick's identity is protected - also known as "Ward of Millionaire Playboy Woos Fashion Model")

hiiiiii so i was wondering do you have any comics/movies/etc you'd recommend to like... get to know characters other than batman? i read robin/batgirl year one... currently i am trying to find comics with jason in them other than the one where he dies :') (btw i cannot believe they decided that based on a vote???)
so the thing about jason is he’s incredibly inconsistently characterized and 80% of his comics appearances just straight up suck. i cannot in good faith tell someone to read rhato but like. for all of its flaws (and there are SO many) red hood and the outlaws IS where youll find the most consistent modern characterization of jason (especially in volume 2. you just have to like. ignore the plot and accept that these characters do not exist elsewhere). depending on how you like jason characterized, you might like the titans tv show (i love the show but titans jason is not my cup of tea)
his story in urban legends was alright and is a quick read. im (somewhat controversially) a fan of his countdown appearances but i would hold off on attempting to read countdown until you have more foundations just bc of All The Characters Every Where All The Time. chris odonnell’s dick grayson (as seen in the movie batman forever mostly) is also a lot closer to jason than to dick so you might like that even if its not particularly aligned with any actual version of either character. ive heard the same thing about tim in. uh. i think its batman the animated series? idk i wasnt allowed to watch tv as a kid whichever one tim is in
other characters are a little easier! one of my favourite comic runs to start with is stephanie brown’s 2009 batgirl run. its a good start if you arent used to comics—its a relatively self contained narrative that works with a lot of television tropes (the writer also worked in the smallville writers room).
speaking of smallville, thats my top tv rec. its good. it holds up (mostly). it’s fun. theres not really any batman characters (its a whole thing no one wants me going into it) but you do get early days justice league shenanigans. moreover bart allen must be resurrected
idk if any of this is helpful in any capacity but let me know if you’re looking for a different kind of answer or if this does in fact help. oh! and if u have more experience w comics than i’ve assumed, cass’s batgirl run is also solid—it’s just ive found its a little harder for new readers to get into 90s/early 00s stuff. umm. what else am i missing. batman and the signal is a quick self contained miniseries so thats a fun lil intro to duke thomas. someone chime in if im missing something blatantly obvious

Ngl, I'm a sucker for Tim and Dick's brotherly relationship and I really miss it. It's one of those things Rebirth skipped. Thankfully, there's 90s and early 00s comics for suckers like me 😆

Part of the reason I switched to bi-weekly was some weeks are light and others have a slew of new releases. This week is one of those heavy ones. The majority of the current list are singles but I've been able to listen to a few albums so far and there are some standouts from artists that are new to me. An important note for newer people: My playlists are not fluid mixes, but are rather just lists of music I enjoy. As such it is quite possible a folk track will lead to a hardcore track followed by a hip hop one. So just be forewarned.
Singles highlights: Reckoner - Chambord Remix: Starting off my playlist the same as my Release Radar. This is a very funky/groovy dance remix of Radiohead's Reckoner and I love it. The beat drives it throughout.
Something Loud: Pleasantly surprised to enjoy a track from Jimmy Eat World, one of those bands I liked in high school and just had that signature late 90s/early 00s rock sound.
Glimpse of Us: Great sorrowful sounding track from Joji, his voice and production are giving James Blake vibes here.
California: Bonny Light Horsemen never miss, anytime they come out with something its a must listen. Chill Americana on this one.
Heartbeat: From the get-go The Midnight always brings the nostalgic 80s synths that characterize their sound.
WOODY SHAW: One of my favorite finds of the past few years has been poet, singer, experimental hip hop artist Moor Mother. They've announced a new album with each track honoring jazz and blues icons. This track has a great feature from jazz singer Melanie Charles.
Última Vez: This meditative folk track from Brazilian singer Tim Bernandes is lovely. The first few ballads for his next LP, due out this week, have been intimate and the album will likely be in my Albums highlights soon.
EP/Albums highlights: Legacies by Deau Eyes: A new artist for me, I've described her sound as a halfway between Lana Del Rey's dream pop and Lucy Dacus' rock tendencies. Almost every track on the album is excellent, Moscow in the Spring is my favorite though.
off the grid: Another new surprise was this album from Yot Club. It's a lofi pop album and just flows really nicely. Gives me some Car Seat Headrest vibes at times, he sounds a bit like Will Toledo. can't celebrate is my favorite track from it.
I Told Bessie: Armand Hammer is one of my favorite hip hop groups. Lyrics are always fire and the production always feels very experimental and new. E L U C I D follows through on this solo record and still has several great tracks with his Hammer collaborator, billy woods. Jumanji is the standout track for me on this one. Liner Notes:
A few EPs and Albums have good tracks (Christina Aguilera, Of Monsters and Man, Grace Ives, Joyce Manor, Patty Griffin) but wouldn't necessarily rec the entire project.
CupcakKe always gets a spot and she doesn't disappoint: "Make the pussy stretch like minimum wage" or "Jenga game, he hate pullin' out"
Not a huge Regina Spektor fan so was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed the very light Loveology track.
Final thoughts: As always most of the first tracks are more in the indie sphere, I'll be adding more mainstream stuff throughout the week as well as review some more hip-hop focused tracks/albums/tapes.

Some domestic Jonathan headcanons for fall
Tumblr media
I think I left it vague enough to imagine any version of him you’d like, I know not everyone likes this version but I just have a VERY big soft spot for Cillian Murphy’s take
Jonathan has a savings jar and around fall you two go to bath and body works and lush so you can stock up on stuff to last the year
You go in the beginning so you don’t miss out on anything but when they start putting fall things on sale you go and buy whatever else you can
You do something similar with food, when they put fall themed snacks on sale around end of fall/beginning of winter you buy a bunch of pumpkin spice stuff and Halloween themed snacks
What can you say? cupcakes just taste better when the sprinkles are shaped like bats, spiders, and tombstones
You two have a closet specifically for autumnal soaps, candles, etc
He has a black cat that follows him like a shadow whenever he’s home
He lives near a forest near the outskirts of the city
A few years ago he found a sick little kitten near his house.....well more like a little cabin with heat, water, and electricity
He (unfortunately) found it’s mother
He assumed Selina lost it but she always took very good care of the cats in Gotham
He took it to her for advice on what’s wrong
Everyone in Gotham knows if something’s wrong with your cat you go to Selina first
You’re surprised when his crows take a liking to you
You’re shocked that the cat doesn’t try and hurt them
While Jonathan likes straight up thriller/horror movies he’ll still watch some fun Halloween movies with you that you’re nostalgic for
He has an old tube t.v. from the late 90′s-early 00′s that still works
He offered to get a newer t.v. for you but you love it
He’s surprised when he actually likes some of them and you’re surprised when you learned he never watched a Tim Burton movie
“Are you serious?! YOU of all people have NEVER watched a Tim Burton film?!”
He loves all of them but he’s soft for Hocus Pocus and Beetlejuice because he knows you’ve been watching them since you were a literal toddler and he knows how much they mean to you
Besides, Sarah Sanderson reminds him a little of Harley
You two spent literal days making a list of what movies you were gonna watch on what days
Jonathan took the time to actually make a chart for how long each movie was
You spend time while he’s at work organizing the VHS and DVDs on the shelf for fall
He gets jealous when you’re watching re-animator and let it slip that you had a crush on Herbert when you were younger
“Babe, I wouldn’t cheat, and that’s not even counting the fact that it’s physically impossible for me to cheat on you with a movie character“
He asks who else, you sigh and admit Egon from Ghostbusters, Seymour from Little Shop of Horrors, and Adam from Beetlejuice
He gets quiet and blushes a bit when he realizes they’re all nerdy, gangly, characters with glasses
You’ve told him multiple times but he still can’t fully comprehend how he got a girlfriend because of the qualities that kids made fun of him for
Wants to watch the first horror movie you’re ever experienced with you
His eyebrow goes up when you pull out Bride of Chucky
When he’s off from work you two apples and pumpkins and spend the evening carving pumpkins
You realize you two ended up taking more than you could ever need
While he’s at work on Monday you decide to make treats for you and your friends, caramel and candy apples, pies, cakes, etc
You look up how to grow pumpkins and apple trees and decide to give it a try
You give any leftovers to the crows
You text Jonathan a picture you took of a squirrel sleeping in a pumpkin
Sitting in the living room, Jonathan cuddled up on a plushy recliner, wearing a sweater with a blanket draped over him
stacks of books on the coffee table with the cat sitting on top of them like she owns them, a couple books on the side table
Some fall scented candle burning away
You’re sitting in a recliner across form him, you picked up some craft supplies and some new things to try out
You decided to knit a new winter set for Jonathan, he always went through them so fast, you wanted to blame it on batman fighting him but in all honesty the chemicals he worked with probably did something to the wool
Sitting in bed cuddling him while he reads a bit before bed
He always re-reads Carrie around this time of year
When he felt safe enough to open up to you, you were shocked by how similar his situation was
Can go out to cause chaos on Halloween as long as he gets back at the end of the night
“I don’t care what you have to do as long as you’re back when I wake up“

i’ve gotta say though there’s something about “modern” (in quotes bc the 90s/00s aren’t that long ago) tim drake comics that’s missing and that is tim’s sarcastic inner monologues. i mean i get it he’s currently having an existential crisis and he’s been through a lot since then but his sarcastic inner monologues was one of the many reasons why he became a comfort character of mine

Aqua Teen Hunger Force #54: “Hypno-Germ” | October 17, 2004 - 12:00 AM | S04E12
Shake contracts Hyno-Germs from a toilet seat, they are little guys who control your brain to make you hallucinate and be crazy. Shake is rendered in a catatonic state after entering a severe stage of the infection, spurring Frylock into action. It’s said that the germs can be defeated by dispatching Mexican jumping beans into the afflicted person’s brain, where they’ll sabotage one of the many plays that the Hypno-Germs like to put on. Sound convoluted? It is! Sound funny? Well...
So, this one sorta sucks. It starts fairly strong, and has some jokes I like, but when we cut to Hyno-Germ land the show kinda screeches to a halt and stops being quite as funny. But this episode is notable for a few reasons. Three reasons, to be precise, which is in my mind the smallest amount “few” can possibly be:
Legitimately famous guest stars Bob Odenkirk, Janeanne Garofalo, and Fred Armisen
The Adult Swim debut of Tim & Eric, who voice some characters here
This is actually a technical backdoor pilot for Squidbillies, hence the ATHF reappearance of Todd Hanson, who would voice Dan Halen in said series.
How is it a technical back door pilot? Well, the animation technique used for the Hyno-Germ scenes is different than normal Aqua Teen episodes. This was basically a test to see if the animation they were planning for Squidbillies was feasible. That’s what I mean: It was a pilot for the TECHNICAL aspects of Squidbillies. This was likely the focus of the episode which is why it turned out the way it did: not that funny. In fact, there’s a straight-up stolen joke from Ren & Stimpy in this one, which is pretty shameful (it’s the gag where the germ princess has grown her hair à la Rapunzel, but it’s her nose hair).
I’m gonna go positive for the last paragraph, because yeah, this one’s pretty low on my list. The opening is okay, and shows promise. There’s a very abbreviated Spacecataz segment, which is good. And the bit where they make Shake watch shaky camcorder footage of him begging to be let into a public bathroom is very funny, and realistically sloppy as Meatwad is holding the camera. There’s a documentary realism to it that I like a lot, and then when they cut back to the scene at hand we see a small explosion cut off by the bottom of the frame, implying that Shake threw the TV remote or something and it exploded, like all things Shake throws to the ground. The absolutely weird choice of having the television “camera” fail to capture the impact, as though this animated series is a mulit-cam sitcom and they failed to switch to the right camera when it happened is wonderful. I love shit like that.
MAIL BAG
Have you ever had a one on one with Dave Willis. He seems like the most normal Willams Street guy but he's seriously kind of an oddball. Like if John Swartzwelder wasn't a recluse. I guess that's Atlanta for you. Matt's a teddy bear though.
I probably said this once, but I have this clearly false memory of Dave Willis being interviewed by Primetime Glick. So maybe I actually interviewed him? I do have all of Primetime Glick’s exact ticks and speech patterns. The few times I’ve gotten facetime with a celeb I usually wind up eating several glazed donuts. So, who can say?
You are like a karen gone wild
1. no i’m not, fuck you
2. last night I found out that Carol Burnett is still alive because I was watching the Carol Burnett pluto.tv channel and there was a bumper that was just audio of Carol making a joke I don’t remember about being a Karen and she didn’t sound THAT OLD, she sounded about as old as we remember her voice sounding in like, the 90s or whatever, and I thought it was one of those Roger Ebert voice programs and I was sickened by it because I thought she died recently but not recently enough for her to be alive to make Karen jokes. Anyway, long story short: I looked it up she’s still alive
I think you missed an obvious joke in one of your mailbags. But I guess if you thought Lowtax/Something Awful was the paragon of cleverness we shouldn't be surprised. Stick to cartoons, chunky.
Okay fuck you too (this is clearly a different guy from the Karen one because I assume I have thousands of fans so it makes sense). I honestly never went too deep on Something Awful. I remember enjoying a few features on there but I never went to the message boards and I remember using a picture from Cliff Yablonski Hates You as an avi and people on other message boards would ACCUSE ME of being a “typical Something Awful fanboy” and I really didn’t even understand what that even meant because I barely ever read it! I just liked the funny looking cat picture I found on there
