BAAAAAAAABES OMG!!!! EPISODE 10 IS GIVINGGGGG!!!

It's giving cuteness, it's giving love, it's giving ✨QUEEN✨ it's giving fucking satisfaction my loves!

📍Let's start off with some really funny scenes brought to you by Hong Mama, it's so freaking satisfying to see her get humbled over and over and over again! Her getting off of her high horse has been long overdue tbh, that scene when she finally got her salary after work, only for Baek Mama to deduct it for the coffee she paid for (her), God her face was priceless. Everyone say it with me, "DESERVE!" Perhaps Mama Baek can teach her a thing or two about mothering. It's about time she learns that too.

📍Papa Hong and Papa Baek having a heart-to-heart conversation over their frustrations at losing something, and almost everyone seems to turn their backs on them. Them bonding over Kdrama while having a drinking session at the same time is probably one of the most wholesome scenes in the show.

📍Mama Baek being such a loving mama to Hae-in 😭😭 even though it's clear that she loves her son, she didn't tolerate Hyun-woo's bullshit when the latter confessed about Hae-in's illness and the divorce. I hope all parents will take note of this: you don't tolerate your kids' wrongdoings, you make them own up to their mistakes and guide them in doing the right thing. That's why Hyun-woo knows how to take accountability, his mother taught him well.

📍Soo-cheol is actually growing on me. He's an immature idiot at first, but he really has a big heart. He's the one who got fooled and dumped on yet he still worries over baby Geon-u and Da-hye. Yes he was hurt, but he loves Da-hye so much that he can't even bring himself to be angry at her. He sees the goodness in her and points at the right person who caused their family to crumble. I can't wait for him to man up and fight to bring his family back.

📍Oh my beautiful BaekHong, the "divorced" couple who acts like they're still married. Hae-in acting like a typical wife who scolds her husband for getting into trouble, but still takes care of him anyway and Hyun-woo the boxing champion trembling at his angry wife 🤣.

📍I also love the fact that they finally have that much needed talk about their marriage, what went wrong, what they could have done, and Hyun-woo having no regrets at marrying Hae-in and would gladly choose her again and again. Dear Lord, where can I get myself a Baek Hyun-woo?

📍But damn Hae-in exposing Eun-seong during the press conference was the BEST!!! Dude was so sure he was gonna marry her but Hae-in isn't the queen of Queens for NOTHING. He really did underestimate her, I kid you not when I say that I literally flipped my middle finger when the camera focused on Eun-seong *clears throat* with all due respect to Park Sung-hoon, you are a great actor sir but I loathe your character. Yoon Eun-seong is the very definition of "delulu is the solulu" again, Hae-in would rather die than be with him, and since this episode is so satisfying, I'm gonna save my rant for the next episode.

📍I have always loved the dynamics of Hyun-woo and Hae-in, they may be different in a lot of things but they complement each other in so many ways. For example, when someone is trying to fuck up the other, or when one of them is in danger, there will be hell. Hyun-woo is very protective of Hae-in, he'll fight tooth and nail for her even if it means getting hurt in the process. This man will fight for her to the death. Hae-in on the other hand is the type of person who would rather take all the pain to herself than seeing her loved ones suffer. She will never stand back when it comes to Hyun-woo, and when someone tries to fuck him up, she'll go above and beyond to save him, and she'll give you hell if you mess with her husband. Since the beginning they have always fought for each other, but in the next coming episodes I hope they'll learn to fight together because seriously, they are such a power couple.

📍Hae-in still calls Hyun-woo her husband 🥹🥹

📍Shout out to Grace for not being too stupid, you have chosen the right team to help ma'am. And Da-hye...girl, come back already.

Hi! Thank you for the warning. I don't "support" him or anyone, per se - I see art I like and reblog it. I'm sorry, but I'll have to do a small rant. Firstly: do I fall in the "fetishizer of clones" category? Because most of what I do here is ogle over them and write graphic smut of them with self-insert reader characters. Anyway, moving on:

When I reblog art from the small internet artists here, I'm not raising a flag or promoting them or anything, I'm just... slapping some pretty/cool/funny art on my blog bc I liked it, y'know? My reblog of some person's doodle doesn't - and shouldn't - mean an immediate display of my agreeing with everything this person says and thinks.

In fact, we share glimpses of each other's thoughts, headcanons, opinions with a reblog and we move on to the next one. I have mutuals who like all sorts of things I don't - soup, hiking, the brithish royalty, hunting. I still reblog their stuff, and that doesn't mean our opinions on those topics align.

Of course, I'm always grateful for warnings about me accidentally rebbloging content from a terf/nazi/homophobe/pedophile/scammer, etc, etc. because then I can erase said post and report the user who made it to try make Tumblr a safer community. Disagreeing on whether soup is good isn't the same as disagreeing on lgbt rights.

But when it comes to shipping... man, I don't really care, y'know? Since the clones are all adults, this falls to me in the "ship and let ship" category, and I really lack the mental energy to get into the whole debate of what artist is writing/drawing what about people who, at the end of the day, are still nothing but [adult] fictional characters.

Because here's the deal: who really cares about how or with whom these characters are being shipped? "The children"? They shouldn't be looking at art marked as 18+ in an account that says "no minors". People (like myself) with squicks/triggers/traumas? Tags and blocking systems exist precisely to aid you with that. I use them and I love it. People that Don't Like that ship and want everyone to stop shipping it because they said so? Tags and blocking, again.

I didn't mean to soapbox on your ask, anon, and I'm not even defending Lychgate here bc I don't really care enough about him or this debate to do so tbh.

But I want to emphasize that I only appreciate these kind of warnings when they are about serious, actively damaging stuff, like me accidentally spreading crypto-terf posts bc they're disguised as feminism, or me having some creepy teen groomer's pokemon content on my blog bc they made a funny joke.

I know your intentions are good, but shipping discourse of adult ships is, in my particular opinion, not that important. I don't even ship clones, nor do I care when I see works in which they are shipped. I'm just... detached enough to see they are fictional characters that anyone can get to play with in their own sandbox the way they see fit, and that's none of my business.

That's my stance on adult ships of - and I repeat it - fictional characters. Again, this is not a dig at you or any other person squicked/triggered by clone shipping, nor is a pro clone shipping post. In fact, I'm not pro or against anything when it comes to adult ships - i'm over 30 and way too tired to be screaming about any of this anymore as I did in my teens. Now I just wanna sit here and vibe.

the more i think about the recent chapter of somebody's watching me the more i fall in love with you as a writer and your interpretation of simon. you've managed to find the middleground between Ghost and Simon that feels so true to both versions and you've humanised him in a way that doesn't water down the essence of his character. for a character as multidimensional and layered as he is that is if course no easy task and with each chapter you put out i am in awe of how you tackle his characterisation.

when i first read chapter 10 i was feeling a lot of emotions (another testament of how skilled you are at writing. eliciting strong emotions from a reader is no easy task) and i was so caught up in the "how could he do this? this is so creepy" of it all and tried to convince myself that no, maybe you were wrong, simon wouldn't do this. because as childish as it seems, i didn't want to admit that my current favourite comfort character could do something so violating and creepy. now that the initial shock of it has worn off and i've given it more thought, i think it's right up his alley and more in character than i would have hoped.

to me it seems that simon, with all his inexperience with relationships and love in general, approached the situation in the only way he knew how; as if it were a methodical intelligence operation or whatever the proper military term for it is. he used all available resources to gather information and intercepted the target at the known location then went against his predetermined rules of engagement which landed him in a relationship he may have wanted but didn't really aim for. in my head it seems like Simon failed so he defaulted to Ghost. it by no means excuses any of actions but looking at it from what i think may be his point of view softens the situation a little bit. definitely not enough to forgive him easily though. i can't wait to see him beg for forgiveness.

i didn't intend on ranting for this long tbh but thank you for reading my random 1am rambles about your work. i remember reading it for the first time at like 3am a little under a month ago and feeling so giddy about everything. you've really done a great job and you're probably one of my favourite accounts on tumblr now.

p.s i saw your post earlier about being afraid that you'll lose followers after the series is over and that is so far from the truth! sure we might have found you because of the fic but it was only a means of discovery, not the be all, end all of what you have to offer. we came for simon but stayed for ej! plus who doesn't love pedro pascal i mean he is just so ,,,, dreamy sigh

People who understand the thought process that goes into my writing and my interpretation of Ghost, I am forever in love with you 🫶🫶

Listen, there’s not much more I can add to this that will say anything extra as you’re quite literally spot on. This is EXACTLY the point I was trying to make.

Since the beginning this story has been about combining the two - Ghost and Simon. Because whilst technically they are the same man, they actually differ quite a lot but elements of each can be found in the other.

The idea of chapter 10 and the end of chapter 9 was to leave you thinking “what the fuck”. Because he’s been so kind and attentive as he figures out his affection for Sarge so far. So the sudden shock of being like “he did something terrible, almost unforgivable” is there to make you question him as a character and his motives. He loves Sarge, he really does, but his means of going about that love are wrong. He may believe what he’s doing is right but morally it’s questionable at best.

And you pointing out the fact that he went about the situation as if he were Ghost and used his resources to carry it out methodically is right on the mark. Simon fails him in this area, he doesn’t know what to do. So what’s easiest? Using Ghost to his advantage. And once Ghost gets him what he needs and he succeeds… then he goes back to being Simon. His intentions were pure but his actions were not. He found a way to make emotions become, as you said, an intelligence operation when all he really needed was to say something to Sarge. Anything. A single clue into his interest in her would have worked. But he doesn’t get that.

It will hit him at some point that what he did was bad and then he’ll strive for forgiveness. And it’s only then, when he completely understands, that Sarge will begin to accept his apologies. As they finally have some meaning to them.

Please rant for as long as you’d like. I love reading your insights, especially when they align with my intentions for the story. I’ve re-read this ask about ten times now and have waited to respond to give you a proper reply so I’d have some coherent thoughts put together. Because the amount of utter glee I felt when I first read this left me giddy and reeling.

Being one of your favourite tumblr accounts now is such a high honour and I am delighted to hear such a thing. And knowing that I’ve got people who are going to stick around once Somebody’s Watching Me is finished is wonderful to hear. And Pedro Pascal is very dreamy, love that man to death. But sticking around for EJ? For me? Im flattered!

Don’t ever apologise for not being able to shut up, especially for stuff like this. This brought me such joy when I read it and I loved how detailed it was. Hope you have a lovely day because this ask certainly brightened mine :)

Side note: people who say they didn’t expect the events of chapter 10… the series is named after a song about being paranoid that someone is stalking you for a reason. It’s been there since the beginning. Sure, it has several meanings. But the obvious one was there all along 😏😏

Hiiiiii!! I love your writing !!! 💖💖 But the recent update really got me messed up 😔 One thing I love about this story is that it has me thinking and observing each character. Like satoru and Naomi repeating history w how his parents ended up together or satoru learning from how his parents ended together doesn’t mean a happy ending seeing how his dad also loved another women.

It also has me thinking about Naomi and even though what she did was awful I have a feelings she’ll end up breaking and telling him of her crime cause she has sent like strong minded like mother gojo tbh. I also do think if she ends up pregnant she may lose the baby due to stress cause tbh I don’t think satoru is ready for another baby just yet… idk that flashback of yn and satoru said a lot … and that might mess up Naomi when she notices he may not take the news great.

Now I’m ranting cause I got lots to say 😭

I have come to the following conclusion:

I am not allowed to estimate the length of any of my LiuShen fanfics. I seem to be literally incapable of it.

Even my four seasons story (Hundred Winters Grove) almost became more than four chapters, because I could not help myself. It did become something like double the estimated word count. And this was after I had originally thought I might be able to contain it in a single longish oneshot.

I'm normally fairly good at estimating how long a story will be, did you know? Sure, there's a margin of error either way, but I usually have a fairly good guess a chapter or two in, and that margin of error shrinks with each chapter.

LiuShen? It does the opposite.

(Behind the cut I try to rant entertainingly about my current project.)

This is what it's been like for The Guardian Ghost and the Bookish Fairy so far.

Original thought: How about a 4+1 oneshot of a ghost Liu Qingge protecting Shen Qingqiu? Here is a list of the four times he can protect SQQ. Okay, no, 5. Because that'd be funny. Okay, a 5+1 longish oneshot for my fake birthday! Perfect! I'll just skate quickly across the scenes and focus on the funny, cute, or romantic moments and done. Gosh, having this list is going to make it so much easier!

Next: No, it's taken over 1.5k words to just for Liu Qingge's qi deviation scene. We're looking at a multi-chapter for sure. Three chapters, then? Friendly thoughts (since he knows it's not the original SQQ), then attraction, and then resolution? Okay, I'll just map out the chapters for that and... outline complete. Now I may resume writing.

Then: This chapter is running a little long. I'll break this one into two parts. So it'll be four chapters. That'll cover the entirety of August, which is great, TBH. I should have a good idea of where I am in Cultivate by the time the last chapter posts.

Yesterday: ...how is my outline now at six chapters? How. I am running out of ways to title the chapters since my previous systems have broken. FFS, whatever, as long as it's vaguely the right idea go for it. At this rate, I'm going to have to add the tag "slow burn" to my tags draft. I refuse to tag this 5+1 because that idea is dead by now. Everything is out of control. Characters who were basically meant to be walk-on roles have entire scenes now. Everything is on fire. Dogs and cats living together - MASS HYSTERIA.

...on the plus side, I'm enjoying the story.

It's not nearly as funny as intended (scenes originally intended to be less than 500 words to reach a punchline are now treated more seriously or altered to be more than a goof), but it has its moments.

And, as I said, characters meant to be walk-on roles the equivalent of Guard 3 now have scenes.

Luo Binghe now merits his own tag mentions (Gray Lotus Luò Bīnghé & No Vinegar - just to confirm that he's not a bitter love rival in this fic... though maybe 'No Vinegar' isn't entirely accurate, just it's not Binghe who suffers from it). Shang Qinghua has the biggest role in this fic than he has in any of my fics so far. Perhaps put together. He'll go in the characters list. Liu Mingyan may also merit being tagged in the characters list...

TBH, it's a much better fic for it, but I despair of myself. This is exactly why Cultivate will be a monster. (But probably a monster that will get me chapters to post all through November while I do NaNoWriMo for a different story.)

I'm not in as much pain so I've been able to spend more time at the keyboard, which is useful because the wordcount keeps growing and the deadline moves ever-closer. And I do hate posting fics where I haven't finished them first. I'm currently on-track to finish the story by the end of the month, but possibly only if I continue to write ~3.5k+ a day this weekend. (At least I still have a week between the end of the month and posting day, just in case.)

PS: The scene that justified the Grey Lotus Binghe tag? I'm rather sad readers have to wait for that one.

I view book to show adaptions as basically fan fiction and the characters as AU versions of themselves. But the last scene is definitely the closest we got to the book Kate and Anthony’s playful dynamic. It also is probably the one scene every one in fandom agrees they enjoy makes me think they shouldn’t have strayed this far from the book.

I don't mind that they strayed from the book's plot, I don't think (maybe I'll feel differently in a week lol). I tossed the book out of my head before I watched and tried to just watch it like I didn't anything about these characters.

That said - I think what was missing in the TV show that we did get in the books is a moment or two where Kate and Anthony are not enemies and they're not lovers - and they TALK. And the connection that others may see (ie Daphne in episode 3 pointing out the way they shoulder responsibility and also seeing their dynamic during pall mall) becomes a connection that Kate and Anthony make. Because in the TV show, it veeeery much felt like when they transition away from enemies, that shift is based off...desire? Which is fine. But I don't think that's enough to sell me on how quickly they got to the level of their feelings in episode 5.

Kate, grief and the library

I think my biggest problem comes down to the fact that we never truly got to explore Kate’s grief - and I’m not talking about book!Kate and her night terrors. I am talking about TV!Kate. It becomes clear that Kate obviously took the helm when their father died - something she alludes to in episode 6 and something Mary states outright in episode 7 and again in episode 8.

We got an entire episode that laid out Anthony’s past and the way his father’s death impacted him and the fact he never really got to grieve. And it’s great that they did that - they needed to, particularly viewers’ perception of Anthony from season 1. However we never get anything even approaching the equivalent for Kate.

It’s very clear that Anthony’s experience with grief is similar to what happened to Kate. She obviously never got to really grieve her father’s death (Mary basically says this in episode 8) and instead threw herself into essentially proving herself worthy of love (no exploration of why Kate felt like this, ps). I don’t think we needed flashbacks of Kate and her father - but we needed to hear something earlier then the end of the season about her missing her father and why she felt the need to essentially take his place when he died and what that was like for her.

The library scene was a chance to do 2 things - 1) give the viewers an interiority of Kate’s grief by having her say even a few lines about her father beyond that he read to her during storms. And 2) give her and Anthony a chance to connect away from their animosity and away from their very clear physical attraction. Honestly, this would have made their physical attraction land much harder as the season went on because it’s about all of it together - how much they are in sync in every possible way. Jonathan Bailey has said that Anthony and Kate are ‘psychologically naked’ with each other before they’re actually naked - but I didn’t feel this, tbh. But I would have if they’d just had...a conversation where they inadvertently open up to each other.

To me, that’s the greatest failing when you compare the book and the show. They ignored that, even beyond their duty to their families, they both shouldered that while also suppressing their grief. But I don’t think that we ever truly got to feel the latter with Kate. Generally, I just think that the two lead characters should have equal exploration of their issues - and if you do that, their connection would be even more powerful for the viewer.

(Side note related to the book - I DO think they should have had Anthony rant during the fencing scene about how The Sister smells like flowers and it annoys him - so that when we get to the lilies in episode 7, it’s obvious he was not...annoyed lol).

i posted this on twitter but wanted to post it here too cuz ppl here love to discuss and will actually read this maybe and i would love to discuss things cuz that way i get to see things in a new light

so here it goes, my messy thoughts months after finishing svsss main story but not the extras:

thought about how shen jiu and bingge are parallels of each other and illustrate how cycles of abuse work, and how both suffered and made others suffer, and ultimately lost everything they ever wanted and worked for in their lives and now im sad

i dont think theres a lot of fics that explore how similar their characters are. its also odd to me that there are fics that paint bingge as being okay while sj is irredeemable and scum. i had a lot of issues and was upset about the potentials of svsss that were not met

thankfully i was not the only one & i was able to find very few fics that delved into things svsss ignored. i appreciate how mxtx writes her stories as realistically as possible cuz she loves to write about how ppl judge without knowing everything. its a common theme in her works

it works well in tgcf and mdzs but to me it ends up being frustrating in svsss. it works well in tgcf cuz we still see the whole picture so we dont miss anything, its the same with mdzs but with some restrictions ex/ mxy and how we only know him thru rumours

and given the false rumours that we saw with wwx we can guess how false the rumours about mxy were as well. someone also wrote about this lack of closure or knowledge for both the characters and readers and how it works well with the themes of the novel but i cant find it lol

that being said, this style, although perfect for her other 2 novels, it falls short imo with svsss. now im admitting that i have yet to read the extras so maybe these things were answered there but there are major characters that we just dont get much about

my complaint here is 100% not critical lol, its personal, i wanted more info more screen time for characters like shen jiu given how important he is but we never got that. our narrator is so unreliable we cant trust him on anything (imo that takes away from the reading pleasure)

sy 100% believes everything from PIDW when it comes to lbh and sj and with lbh it causes so many issues that could have been avoided, this is not a complaint, this is part of the story and theme. but it leaves me frustrated especially since with the other 2 stories the reader gets to get out of the narrator's head or can see to an extent the flawed judgemental way of thinking and how it was wrong. with svsss we dont really get that? maybe cuz i never realized our narrator is extremely unreliable, idk. tbh idek how to explain

idk how to explain properly cuz my thoughts about it are messy. like random thought i re-remembered: the lack of reaction to sj just up and disappearing. sy never realizing the ppl around him are ppl and not just fictional characters. sy not caring about the person who's life he had to live. from the lack of background on sy himself we as a fandom assumed he had absent parents and died alone and thats why he never cared about his old life, no mourning or grief. he easily gets accustomed to life without almost everything old teens/young adults live with. no reaction to the amount of violence and death around him. its one thing to read about but another to live thru. from our assumed old life about him, he should have been very sheltered

the more i think about it the more i see things that frustrate me cuz the potential was so high &honestly if mxtx took a crack at it now with her improved skills, it would reach the popularity levels of her other novels. but oh well i guess thats why we have fanfic lol

there are other things that i just didnt like at all, like that assault scene or how it ended with them apparently just leaving everything behind? and how i can literally list the red flags in their relationship (and i have listed them in a previous svsss rants/thoughts post on here when i hadnt yet finished the novel) but i attribute this to just idk, i like to ignore it, its not great

this is all over the place but if you read this, then i welcome any response just be nice pls lol, i had to block some ppl from my last post cuz they were being mean and rude and honestly that just makes me upset and less likely to enjoy the content you may be rudely defending. despite my criticisms of svsss i still love reading fanfics about it cuz i see the potential and see some writers who are angels and write some amazing svsss fics that fulfill the potential.

and then my favorite generations are 3 and 5 ^_^ hoenn has some of the best pokemon ever imo and gen 5 was when game freak peaked. i think their best games are the 2D ones i think they could handle churning out yearly games when they were 2D for handheld gaming like the gameboy or the DS.

i love hgss too i think if you combined the story of black and white and the walking pokemon gimmick of hgss with the route layouts of gen 3 youd have an incredible pokemon game maybe even the best.

i love the vibrant colors of gen 4 and 5 i think they pokemon sprites all look dynamic and i think hgss fixed a lot of the issues the sinnoh sprites had with looking a little lifeless, and then gen 5 added so much PERSONALITY into them its amazing you can tell exactly how each of these pokemon act just by their little motions during battle.

i love rotation and triple battle mechanics i think they provided a lot more strategy and planning ahead and they could have EASILY turned it into something REALLY COOL

in terms of starter design we'll never top sinnoh though. those are the PERFECT starter designs. absolutely gorgeous. perfect. they all balance each other out too. expert planning. sinnoh actually has a great map layout too with all the routes weaving in and out of mt. coronet it makes you feel like youre really going ALL OVER SINNOH.

also back to gen 5 THE BATTLES WERE HARD!!! THEY WERE HARD AND THEY WERE GOOD THEY HAD GOOD MECHANICS I WISH THEY HAD A FEW MORE POKEMON CAUSE THAT WOULD MAKE EVERYTHING FEEL EVEN BETTER BUT LIKE ELESA'S GYM??? INFAMOUS. LENORE? EVERYONE GETS ONE-SHOT BY RETALIATE AS A FIRST TIME PLAYER. THESE TRAINERS PACK A PUNCH AND CHALLENGE MODE TAKES THAT TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL ITS AMAZING!!!!

it just feels like they had the time to put all the features in and polish them with care. and i think that the reason i hate all of the 3D pokemon games is they feel like theyre all rushed. save for like. x/y. that ones just not a good story tbh. its fine tho. but it is the decline of everything. sun and moon is a cash grab banking on you finding their characters likable and story interesting while it handholds you like crazy the entire game. team skull is fun at least unlike team yell. but neither it nor swsh feel like you as the player are really in the know about what the fuck is going on. at least you get to fight lily's mom in the end of sumo. unlike swsh where the story just kinda pitters out sadly while all the fucking grownups do everything and tell you not to worry about it and send you off to do another easy as fuck gym battle only made bearable by the amazing music.

You came to the right person! This is a great question and I will gladly go on a rant to try and help shed a little light on this!

In short, it's exactly because of how you phrased your question. There's a politician. He's seen as nice and trusted and loved. It seems like something that shouldn't be, and you assume the worst of him because it has to be an act for whatever reason; and that is because of the general view of politicians at the moment. I'm not touching IRL topics with a ten foot pole, but I will say that at present, there is a sorta wariness/a 'they don't care about us' vibe toward politicians in certain countries (including my own). That's something that then seeps into media.

Think about it. If there's a politician in a show of any sort (especially one holding office), they're usually up to no good behind the scenes or are unreliable - just like how a librarian might be cranky, for instance - in a sort of caricature. Off the top of my head I can remember seeing... A mayor that wanted to evict an entire community to build a business something-or-other to make lots of money, a mayor who branded a local team of agents as non-trustworthy when they went against his pretty crummy views (which could be the same show tbh), an absolutely useless buffoon of a mayor who needed the help of children to constantly save his city from supervillains, and a politician (maybe a mayor?) who constantly clashed with the chief of police in a city. This isn't even considering the times a politician character (whether or not they hold office) is involved with criminals, bribery, is being blackmailed, or even has a criminal record of some sort.

Damien is an exception to this trope. It may or may not be completely intentional, but it's genius on Mark's part. You walk in, see this well-dressed man with a rather cheesy Mayor badge pinned on... And people would immediately get suspicious... Something which Mark called people out on at a panel! Don't forget, every character was framed in a way to give reason for them maybe being the killer. I watched WKM (and got vaguely into the fandom) a week after it finished, so I missed the speculation in between each episode. From what I've seen, it appeared that a lot of people were wary of Damien, though I'm not too sure if it's because they were like "IT'S JUST DARK IN DISGUISE DON'T BE FOOLED" or if it was because of his job and mannerisms. Either way, it turns out his worries were genuine, and he was innocent of any crime that night, which completely subverts the expectation of a politician in a show. He's a rare breed - someone that has good intentions and a good heart, who wasn't 'tainted' by politics in some way.... But ends up getting corrupted anyway through matters far beyond his control.

Not only that, there's two important points that I think people forget and I'll go into better detail of under the read-more because this is getting pretty long.

1. The character that is the viewer has known Damien since university. That means they've been friends minimum... Let's say five years, but probably closer to ten. You're going to be more at ease and more 'yourself' around people you are very fond of, and Damien's face lit up the moment he noticed the viewer arrived. Since the viewer would be going into this cold the first time it's viewed, they wouldn't feel that bond and might think Damien's friendliness is an act. 2. While he is the Mayor, he's not The Mayor at that moment. He's merely a Mayor by title alone. For the events of Who Killed Markiplier?, he's just Damien. It would be different if we had walked into his office, but we arrived at a party with people Damien was comfortable with. He had no need to impress anyone because they were friends. Remember, the reason the badge exists is to tell the viewer what Damien does. Otherwise he could be any sort of businessman or guy in a fancy suit, and the explain everything video states that everyone thought Mark got the suit for a wedding when he shared a photo.

(Both points are showcased nicely in the very first scene we meet Damien if you compare the way he talks to the Detective - someone he barely knew - to the viewer - who has been a friend since university. When talking to Abe, Damien stands poker straight (almost rigid) and rests his hands on his cane. One hand moves to emphasise something, but the rest of his body remains still. There's a polite, yet formal, air to him. Here, he is The Mayor. I'd bet they were having casual conversation on how they met Mark or some other generic topic to break the ice. Then the pair notice you and that conversation is instantly DROPPED. Damien immediately lifts his cane as his entire body turns to the viewer. That smile isn't one that's given out of politeness. He's now Damien. There's no need to put on an act when it's a familiar friend. He still stands straight, but his body language and facial expressions are far looser and more casual. Gestures are with both hands now. His expressions are more playful, including widening his eyes to emphasise his tease about the viewer's skill of poker. This continues until he walks off-screen where, I presume, he was going to say hello to William.)

We don't know the extent of how much anyone trusts anyone else, but one of the big exceptions is the Colonel. I know I've written a headcanon on a roleplay blog about this, but he didn't know you, so he was polite, but distant and aloof. He had no reason to even care about you. We saw a good example of William acting like this the morning after. HOWEVER, after spotting the viewer talking to Damien outside at the end of the first episode, he notices a connection. The moment he knows you are Damien's friend he opens up with no hesitation in the second episode and is rather friendly toward you from then on. He trusts you because he trusts Damien, which to me suggests that our Mayor keeps good company and has a good judge of character. Plus, no one really has a reason to think ill of Damien. He and William have an argument focused on William's reaction to Mark's death (and don't forget that Damien wanted to apologise but William kept running away), while Celine shuts him down for Damien trying to get her to reconsider her idea; but neither are motives for them to be suspicious of Damien. Chef and George are indifferent, while the Butler is probably indifferent but feels comfortable enough to make a drug joke with Damien in earshot (and Tyler's IC stream as Butler had it that he thought well of Damien, but this might not be considered canon). On the other hand, you could say that the Detective is wary of Damien, but he was suspicious of everyone between all the work he did and the warning he got from Mark, so it's not completely reliable.

Speaking of, I haven't forgotten about the Detective's study and how there's a record sheet for Damien with something scribbled out. Unfortunately, I don't think it's something we'll ever get clarification on. I double-checked the explanation stream and there wasn't any mention of what was on it... But I feel like I heard Mark say something like 'forget about what is there, focus on why it's there', or how it got there in the first place? Maybe it was for another project, but the idea is more that the Detective's work was built up over time, and not in the span of that weekend; rather than focusing on every little piece of writing that can be seen. Perhaps there is something shady in Damien's life... But since it wasn't relevant to the 'story' we were being shown, it was omitted. This could very well be where people take the idea of a corrupt politician and run with it (and I have seen some excellent roleplayers over the years work with that!), or they could be like me and say that the crimes were things he was framed for. Or maybe, as I'm writing this, it could be like how Abe had documents for things that didn't happen in WMLW, and that the crimes he scribbled out were ones that Dark would do later... But that's going into theorist territory and that's not at all relevant to what I'm talking about.

Anyway, I've rambled on waaay too much as it is. He's trusted and loved as a character because he's so human. Mark pointed out in the explanation stream that Damien was the only one to question what was going on. He was upset, mourning, and had no idea what to do. It's a vulnerability that you don't see from people often, especially if they are supposed to be leaders.

I think that Mia gets too bad of a rap from a lot of people.

Like yes, was she an agent of a super shady organization responsible for making a bio weapon that destroyed a great deal of lives? Yes. However we don’t know her motivation for joining them yet.

They could have lied honestly. Like The Connections could have advertised themselves to be a great, loving work environment and maybe Mia was young and naive and joined them. Or maybe she was desperate for money, and it was the only job that would hire her. Or hell, maybe she fully knew what they were and joined anyway, either on account of her morals being twisted back then or thinking that even though the company was evil maybe she could do good. Who knows, honestly.

Either way, with The Connections being a shady organization there’s like a very high chance that you don’t get to walk away from them alive. I’m sure if you quit they’d see you as a liability and take you out with no mercy. And that’s why I think Mia didn’t leave, because she knew she would be killed if she did, and maybe that’s why she took the job with Eveline, because it was more of a “you will do this or else” than an option for her (whether it was implied by her boss or if they were upfront about what bad things would happen if she didn’t take the job).

And maybe if her morals were twisted before I fully think meeting and falling in love with Ethan changed her if that was the case, because the Mia we see in RE7 and RE8 is a good person. We see that in how when the Baker’s rescue her she thanks them but tries to leave immediately and tries to warn them about staying away from Eveline (as shown in the note she left in the dlc “Daughters”). She could have tried to get them to call the hospital or her company but she didn’t, because she knew that she was under Eveline’s control and the longer she stayed there the more danger the family was. If she was a shitty person she wouldn’t have done this, she would have done everything she could to save herself.

We also see that in how she leaves a final video note for Ethan, telling him to stay away no matter what, because she didn’t want him to get dragged down in her mess. She knows how much Ethan loves her and I’m sure she knows if she sent a video saying “Ethan pls help” he’d come running for her, but she didn’t because she loves him and wants him to live even if she can’t be there with him. We see it AGAIN when she saves Ethan from Eveline’s grasp, when she tears him from the mold thing he was in and pushes him out so Eveline couldn’t hurt him. Fully knowing she’d have to face Eveline’s wrath.

And for everyone saying “why didn’t she just tell him then” I mean think about it. I think if this super shady organization found out someone they didn’t hire knew what was going on they’d kill them because again they’d be a liability and a threat. And that’s why she doesn’t tell Ethan because she doesn’t want him to be targeted and killed by them. I think if she had the opportunity she would have left The Connections but knows that it would result in her death anyway, and telling Ethan the truth would just end in his death if they found out and it was too risky in her mind.

And I think it’s this same form of protection that prevents her from telling Ethan he’s infected. She says (or at least we can assume that this was her) in Donna’s section that she didn’t tell him because she was afraid she’d lose him. I don’t think he’d divorce her if he found out he was molded (that doesn’t really make sense for his character), I think she was genuinely afraid he’d die (again) or worse begin to transform into a monster the way the rest of the infected did. And that’s why she keeps it hidden because she was scared to death he’d die or suffer a worse fate. Am I saying she was right in hiding it? No, but I think that everyone saying she’s manipulative and gaslighting are wrong because she truly loves Ethan and Rose, and I know she’d give her life gladly if it meant they could live.

I saw other people get mad because Rose is essentially being used as a bio weapon and how could Mia let this happen and I’m like?? She probably doesn’t have a say?? I mean yes Blue Umbrella is supposed to be “the good guys” now but like they’re still a huge organization, I’m sure Mia did her best to prevent this from happening and keep Rose safe but like at the end of the day what can she really do against a huge company?? If anything get mad at Chris because I’m sure he’s got some clout or something in that company that could have allowed Rose to live a normal life without Umbrella or maybe not being used as a weapon but idk 🤷🏻‍♀️ a lot of people were like “Mia’s sO annoying at the beginning of the game” but fam that wasn’t even her?? That’s Miranda?? Besides even if it was Mia that blew up on Ethan in the hospital (as per Ethan’s diary) 1.) people deal with trauma differently, and I’m not saying it’s healthy but she’s scarred and doing her best and 2.) probably was afraid if they talked too much about Louisiana Ethan would realize he was infected and then BAM he’s either dead or a mutated monster. And in the cutscene of Mia saying “you matter!” Can you imagine the stress of knowing your husband is Mr Mold Man and not being able to do anything about it, out of fear of what could happen to him? Like of course she’s upset and going to blow when provoked (not that Ethan was aggressive or anything just that he was prying into a very high pressure soda that is Mia’s emotions lol) because she’s been bottling this up and has no one to talk to, and after a while anyone would explode. I think she would have told him if he hadn’t answered that call. Also marriage is not rainbows and butterflies, sometimes you get into messy fights with your partner and sometimes you or the other person say things you don’t mean but at the end of the day you love each other and try to be better. If anything Capcom was depicting a normal marriage tbh.

At the end of the day Mia is not the bad guy. She is only human who tried her best to keep her family safe against all the odds and idc what anyone says, Ethan and Mia love each other and have a healthy relationship and that’s that.

I hope I do this ask justice cause this is the kinda ask I’ve been like hoping for cause you are absolutely gosh damn right.

I’m a chill person & I’m never gonna probably get up into someone’s face about anything cause it’s fandom. I’m not here to cater your experience. That being said, when I see some of these frankly bad takes on Mia I’m like

We know Jack shit about why Mia joined the Connections. Literally nothing so people who have a whole solidified nasty opinion of Mia should probably just sit down. You don’t have to like her. But you also could like, idk, be absolutely dead wrong cause lol Capcom went, yeah we’re not gonna explain any of that.

I got the impression that in between re7 and re8 that they are hiding from the connections too but I may have misunderstood that In re8. I think it makes sense it’s the type of organization you do not leave. No matter how badly you want to and once Ethan came along, do people really think she’d risk him? Spoiler alert: no, no she wouldn’t.

Also, re7 started w Alan. He’s the one that let eveline get out of control so...I feel like people forget that.

I’ve been talking to a friend about people using the Miranda Mia against the real Mia and I don’t know how to kindly tell people that the game kinda absolutely explained that’s not Mia? I do think Mias got a temper which makes sense because Ethan is so even tempered that he can balance her out better. But Miranda Mia was a fuckin bitch. She was needling Ethan’s pain and mocking him. Do people think Ethan sat around for three years taking that? Ethan’s a big boy. He can take care of himself. He was even fighting back w Miranda Mia so manipulative and abusive takes belong in the toilet w the rest of the shit.

Mia blowing up at Ethan means nothing. My parents have proven to me marriage is not easy. You will lose it on people when emotions run high. It happens. There’s a world of difference between a moment of anger versus abuse. But you still love and forgive people for moments of anger because we all have them. And I’m sure Ethan can be just as much as a pain in the ass. I love him more than most and I’d be the first person to admit I’m sure he didn’t make it easy all the time either.

Mia held the truth from Ethan because she was scared not just for her but for him too. It’s a selfless kind of lie. We all do them so I don’t know why Mia is getting burned at the stake for it. I’m just not movable on this. That was a heavy thing to carry and she was doing her best.

As for Rose, I don’t even know what Capcom is doing. How can anyone else know? She’s special and powerful. Maybe she wanted that life? I think we can reserve judgement until re9.

Like I said above, no one has to like Mia. Maybe you don’t vibe w her or maybe you still just don’t care for her. That’s cool. But my gosh don’t lie about the kind of person she is. If you can’t acknowledge her world and heart belongs to Ethan and Rose, I’m just not sure what to tell you.

This last anon you answered got me thinking about why so many of us keep going back to twitter, even when we openly admit to feeling better after taking long breaks, or call it toxic or are affected by w/e the drama of the week (day?) happens to be. I'm sorry if this seems out of place, but since this is neither the first nor second time you bring up these issues, I figured I might as well share my thoughts here with you.

I can only speak from my own experience, so I'm sure what I'm about to say doesn't apply to everyone. I'm sure a lot of people manage to find great friends over there and enjoy the best that twitter has to offer. In fact, most days I feel like I do a decent job at filtering what I pay attention to over there. But still, there are days, those really bad, depressing, 'the world sucks and I just wanna escape it for a bit' days, when I feel myself being pulled into whatever bad spiral is going on at the moment. Yesterday was one of those, tbh, and I had to stop and ask myself why? Why do I still feel the need to keep going back to a site that more often than not leaves me feeling anxious and upset?

The answer isn't very flattering, tbh, and I might regret sharing this here, but I realized it's not the tweets or the likes or the mentions I'm craving. It's just, you know, somewhere to share my love for these characters/shows with other ppl like me. And that's where y'all tumblr ppl come in and say "why, join us over here where it's calmer and friendlier and slower." I believe you, Leah, because your blog is the perfect example of that. It's such a pure, honest representation of the very best sides of fandom, and you know it's true, since you're always drowning in asks lol. But, damn, it's not quite for me... Maybe it's bc I'm not much of a visual person, so gifs and pictures don't really grab my attention for long? Or, more likely, it's bc it takes time and dedication to shape a blog, and the sheer anxiety I feel every time I decide to put anything out into the wild west that is the internet makes it much easier to do so in short bursts of 280 characters or less. Idk...

Whatever the case may be for other twitter users who, like me, keep using twitter even when it makes them anxious, I have to believe that at least a few of them share my desire for connection. And it sucks that I've been there for months, and the 'friendships' I made are superficial at best. But from the little I gathered from observing other users, many many people feel alienated or left out while 'everyone else is friends with each other'. Some people really are, probably, but it's really hard to tell when we're all 'besties' forever reacting to the latest piece of news that just dropped, be it real or fabricated, don't ya think?

I'm sorry for this rant and for how long it ran... I guess I just wanted somewhere to go a bit more in depth about the seemingly neverending chaos, what with the way it often ends up making it's way to your asks, regardless of your advice to just. not. go. there.

First I want to thank you for sharing this with me friend. I'm really glad you felt comfortable enough to come here and talk bc it's important that we have places where we can say what's on our mind.

And I wanna apologize, bc I was sort of flippant with my comment about staying off Twitter. I wanna make it very clear I don't hold anything against the people who prefer to use it and I'm not actually recommending that no one go there. Everybody is looking for different things and has different ways of engaging and of course people are gonna have preferences, and those preferences are gonna vary from mine, and that's ok!!

We all want community and Twitter does offer that more easily. I said this in a moment that got edited out of the podcast but I can't imagine trying to get started on Tumblr now. I have made some profound, life changing relationships here, but that took work, and time. I've been shaping my blog for over a decade. Starting from scratch now feels like a herculean task and I totally understand why this platform wouldn't suit everybody's needs.

I am not gonna advocate for people continuing to use social media if it's negatively impacting them, if it's generating feelings of anxiety or isolation, but I am also not gonna judge you or anyone for continuing to do so bc we all do things we maybe shouldn't, or that aren't good for us, big or small, all the time. It's human. It's understandable. We see something that we want, that maybe could be good for us, and we keep coming back in the hope that even if it wasn't good to us the last time, it will work out now. I'm not gonna fault you for that.

Twitter has the ability to connect people quickly, easily, openly; it is much, much easier to find people there. But bc it moves so fast, it's hard to make those connections last. There are people there who post these pictures and share these stories and have clearly found their in-group and that's wonderful! But it's rare. It's rare here, too, rare anywhere; it's a needle in a haystack, really, finding the person or persons out of such a big group who will be your people. You send a lot of DMs that don't go anywhere before you find the one that sticks. But bc Twitter is so public, I think we see more of those connections than you see here on Tumblr. On Twitter it's so visible, you see "oh it's possible to find your people here, look they did it" but you don't see all the times it didn't work out. Like Instagram; you're seeing the shiniest parts of people's lives and not the work it took to get there.

All this to say, it's completely understandable that you feel this way, and I won't blame you for going back even if it's burned you before. It's an act of hope, really. I make the choice not to spend a lot of time there, but that's my choice for myself, and it's not up to me to make that choice for anyone else. I hope you do get something good out of it.

Seventeen as Roommates

Thanks for the request anon! This one was also super fun to do and I hope you really like it! This is the last request and them I’m putting everything aside to finish the Falling Flower series for y’all!

MASTERLIST

CHOI SEUNGCHEOL

The most responsible roommate, tbh. He doesn’t want to step on any toes so he’ll make sure there’s great communication between the two of you. He knows all of your pet peeves when it comes to a roommate so he can avoid doing anything that would upset you. Of course you extend the same courtesy since Cheol is such a sweet and great roommate and gives you no reason to want to upset him. Definitely the type of roommate that becomes your friend. He’s just such a loving person and it always overflows into his everyday life. So if he’s living with you, he’s just naturally going to be concerned about how you’re doing and how he can help when you’re struggling. The type who will willingly stay up with you at 3am to make cookies, have a movie marathon, and talk about life just to make you feel better and put a smile on your face. A really good roommate. 12/10.

YOON JEONGHAN

The type of roommate where whenever you’re just minding your own business watching tv in the living room, he’ll come and and just lay across your body and go “[Y/N], buy me fooooooooooooood.” And then whine until you agree to get up and go get food with him lol. Not the best roommate. He gets a little messy and procrastinates on cleaning up. But usually it only takes a couple of times of you scolding him for Jeonghan to finally get up and get things done. But he’s also the type to be your friend. Like quite literally the day you move in, he sits across from you on the couch and starts ranting about his life like you guys had known each other forever. And first you’re a little overwhelmed but then kind of relieved cuz honestly you had needed someone to talk to... and now Jeonghan is right there. He’s just so chill and easily becomes a part of your life, it’s almost like you two have always been living together.

JOSHUA HONG

More of a parent than a roommate, lol. Sometimes you get home from school/work and he’s just in the kitchen cooking and goes “Have you eaten? Never mind you probably didn’t eat enough, fix yourself a plate” And then sometimes it’s “Did you drink enough water today?” or “You have that big presentation tomorrow morning, you need to get to bed early.” Sometimes you find sticky notes with words of encouragement all over the apartment when you have big things coming up. Or if you wake up late, you might find an already packed lunch waiting for you so you can rush out the door without worrying about it yourself. Honestly the sweetest roommate of all time. He just tries to make your living space a happy and safe space for you so you never really feel worried or stressed about anything.

What a truly chaotic roommate you’ve chosen lol. Sometimes you walk into the kitchen at 3am to grab a drink and find him hunched over random papers only to discover he’s been obsessing over the most obscure conspiracy theory you’ve ever heard for twelve hours straight. Sometimes you come home to find him asleep in your bed. And you’re like???? Jun????? And then he just tells you that he wanted to ask you how your day was as soon as you got home and being in your room when you got back was the best way to assure that he could. Sometimes just appears behind you and tells you his most random wants in that moment. “[Y/N], I really want hot chocolate.” You jump as he suddenly speaks from over your shoulder. “Jun it’s the middle of August.” He sighs sadly, and you very easily give in. “Ugh fine, let’s go.” But seriously, there’s no dull moment living with Jun. He’s a ball of constant fun and adventure.

KWON SOONYOUNG

I hope you’re ready to live with someone whose love language is physical affection. Because no matter what you do: wash the dishes, buy dessert, get him a gift, remember things about his life, say something nice to him, it will be met with an overenthusiastic physical response: a tight hug, sudden cuddles on the couch, a whole Soonyoung just jumping on top of you. That’s just how he shows his appreciation for you when you’re being a good roommate. He knows living with people is difficult sometimes so he’s really grateful for having such a great one and always wants to show you that. Chores are always split evenly and you have a specified chore day because it’s more fun to do it together and it gets done more quickly. You both pull your weight around your living space to make sure you guys have an easy and peaceful living situation.

JEON WONWOO

When you first start living with Wonwoo you begin to question if you made the right decision. He’s just so distant and quiet and you begin to realize that you really don’t know anything about him at all. But it doesn’t take you long to realize that he was just really shy and hesitant. Once he opens up, he is surprisingly clingy and affectionate. Spends the majority of his time in your room lol. Not even to talk, he just likes sitting in there with you. He’s a big baby about chore day so you have to bribe him with his favorite sweets to do the dishes lol. Sometimes you also have to force him to get out the house and get some fresh air when you realize he hasn’t gone out in literal days. But he is a really sweet roommate and there are no issues between the two of you.

LEE JIHOON

Jihoon is a very strict roommate. Will make it very clear what his pet peeves are and what he expects from a roommate. It’s a little off putting at first but when you realize he wants you to be just as honest as him, you understand that he just doesn’t want to leave any room for misunderstandings or for either of you to be upsetting the other. It also takes awhile for him to be friendly towards you. He views having a roommate as more of “I’ll live with someone else so I don’t have to pay as much for a place” rather than “Oh, a chance for a new friend!” But he will eventually open up. He’s also one you feel more like a mother to, because he’s so busy working and you have to make sure he eats enough and sleeps enough. But you do it in fun ways like having nights where you cook dinner together or movie nights where you watch one movie after another until he dozes off. Jihoon is honestly really happy you’re around.

LEE SEOKMIN

You didn’t think it was possible to know this much about a person that wasn’t your own self. But every day Seokmin comes home, slumps down across the couch from you, and tells you literally everything that happened to him that day. You don’t mind because he always tells his stories in really entertaining ways, but you really do hear about everything. Also not always the best roommate, he can get a little messy and loud. But he’s always very sweet and apologetic and makes up for anything he does very quickly. Definitely becomes your friend, though. You’re living together, and he loves making new friends, so why not? He’ll introduce you to his whole friend group and weave you into his life with no issues at all. Very happy to have a new friend around.

KIM MINGYU

Literally every time you lay down on the couch, Mingyu comes in and drops his entire body on top of yours. Really just the cuddliest person you could have possibly lived with. Once you two are close, Mingyu is all physical affection all the time. Honestly also not the best roommate, he annoys you quite often. Not because he’s inconsiderate or rude, but because he doesn’t always think about what he’s doing and forgets to consider how it’ll affect his roommate lol. You end up posting a chore list on the fridge to remind both of you to keep the place clean. And you’ll post friendly little reminders about things he needs to remember. He’s just grateful to have a roommate that’s so patient with him despite the face that he knows he’s not always easy to live with. He buys you lots of food and gifts to make up for it, and does lots of favors for you too. He may not always be the best roommate but he is a great guy to have around.

XU MINGHAO

Honestly the perfect roommate. Minghao is quiet and clean and respectful. He doesn’t even have to try, he’s just kind of naturally that way. And he’s also really easy going as long as what you do doesn’t affect your shared spaces or his own personal space. Doesn’t really see any reason to be friends with his roommate, but if you start to be friendly, he’ll match your energy. He’s also a perfect friend that way, he lets you take the lead in everything to make sure you feel comfortable and doesn’t push anything. Once you two are closer, Minghao is the cutest roommate ever. He loves ranting to you about his interests and showing you what he’s working on. He’s also happy to listen to you talk about your hobbies. Both of you will get the other to join in on your projects so you can have more fun things in common.

BOO SEUNGKWAN

More like siblings than roommates lol. The two of you get into the dumbest most pettiest arguments 24/7. It’s never anything personal or serious or having to do with your living space, it’s just the most random stuff. But you two will bicker all the time. Someone would think you two had been living together your whole lives. But then someone will be like, “Why do you live together if you hate each other?” And you’ll both pause and immediately go, “What are you talking about? I love [Y/N]!” “Yeah, Seungkwan is like my best friend in the whole world.” You two just really get each other and it makes living together really easy. Cuz you both expect the same thing out of a roommate, so living together is smooth sailing. Well when you’re not debating who the best character in your current favorite show is lol.

HANSOL VERNON CHWE

Vernon is sincerely the chillest roommate. He doesn’t think anything of anything, when you ask him to do things around your place, he just changes his behavior to make you more comfortable. Of course you do the same to him but he honestly doesn’t expect a lot from you. Is 100% going to be your friend. You get texts throughout the day like: [Y/N], please bring meeeee snaaaaaacks, I don’t wanna get out of beeeeeeeeeeeeed. And then you bring the snacks and notice he’s watching a show you really like so you just climb into bed with him and before you know it, you’ve wasted a whole day binging tv with Vernon instead of everything else you needed to do. His habits definitely rub off on you lol. But he’s an easy person to live with.

LEE CHAN

Honestly a great roommate. He’s terrified of upsetting you lol. At first he’s walking on egg shells around you because he doesn’t want to do anything to make you angry. But you assure him that as long as you two communicate with each other, everything will be fine, so he finally relaxes. He may avoid being your friend for awhile because he’s a little shy. So it takes a lot of encouragement from you. So you’re always planning movie nights or fun activities or really anything to do together. Chan honestly adores you for it. He’s grateful to have a roommate that makes him feel so welcomed and comfortable. He repays it all back by giving you a very genuine and kind and loving friendship.

Here's my hot take on why SAO as an anime sucks, but has literally one, maybe two or three redeemable characters. First off, I'll start with my personal favorite, and huge comfort character.

Klein

AKA

Ryoutarou Tsuboi

Klein is a character that for the anime he resides in, is very well rounded and well written. In the first episode, he finds Kirito, and asks if he can help him out. When the main plot happens or whatever, Klein tells Kirito to go one ahead, because he has to go back and help his irl friends, but makes note of how he will come to help if Kirito calls. They make that bond and all this BS happens, Kirito watches his entire guild get murdered in front of him. But while Kirito is an edge lord for 90% of the first season, Klein does everything in his power to break down Kirito's walls. Klein ACTIVELY pushes against Kirito to try and offer him support when he knows how much he must be hurting. He knew that Kirito's mental health would suffer if he kept isolating himself, feeding into self destructive behavior and actions due to his survivors guilt. But at the same time, Klein doesn't push him TOO far. He respects his boundaries, and understands that some wounds heal with time. He offered his unwavering support and friendship, yet Kirito chose to rely on a girl that happens to be as emotionally constipated as him. To give Asuna and Kirito credit, they both learned to be vulnerable and trust others by breaking each other's walls. BUT THAT SENDS THE MESSAGE THAT ONLY A SIGNIFICANT OTHER WILL EVER UNDERSTAND YOU, AND TO LEAVE YOUR FRIENDS BEHIND WHEN THEY TRY TO SUPPORT YOU.

Klein stays by his simp friend to an unreasonable amount, possibly a homosexual amount, and they remain good friends after Kirito goes through the motions of his edgy sole survivor protag BS. Even in other games/seasons such as Alfheim Online and Gun Gale Online, Klein supports Kirito no matter what.

To sum everything up, Klein is a character that is meant to be an occasional comic relief and support for the edgy protagonist, but ends up being the most emotionally competent, realistic, and 3 dimensional person in the entire series. It's a shame we got to see so little of him and he'll always have a special place in my heart.

Next up, someone I also thought deserved better/needs some more attention is a female character! Someone I believe shows and deals with trauma and healing in a serious light.

Sinon

AKA

Shino Asada

Sinon is a character that I haven't hyper fixated on as much as Klein, but I still have some words to say about her character. Sinon is a character that is immediately presented as a talented sniper, and someone who doesn't fuck around. She's strong willed, the most talented sniper in the game, and overall just a badass female protagonist. We follow her journey from GGO to real life, where she speaks about her trauma with guns, (she shot and killed a man at like 5 years old as he was robbing the bank) and how playing GGO makes her feel less afraid of them, even though she still can't touch one irl and is bullied relentlessly for it. Kirito initiates the process of recovery, by telling her to face her fears in real life. Encouraging her to stand up to the people harassing her, and prove to them and herself that she's more than her trauma.

In my opinion, this is a great message, albeit a little extreme, about how to overcome PTSD and cope with it so it doesn't control your life. Again, a little extreme, and I may need to rewatch and edit my post later. But regardless, I think Sinon is a good message about pushing forward, even if it feels like you can't. Of course, I have my fair share of criticism. Sinon, along with every other female character in the Sword Art Online series, is extremely objectified and sexualized for no good reason. Everyone depends on Kirito, the edgy protagonist, and loves him, even though he's a fucking asshole.

To finish my thought about Sinon before I go on a rant, she could have been written and handled so much better if they actually took the time to write three dimensional female characters, without having them rely on a male character, or only exist to motivate a male protagonist *cough cough Asuna cough cough*.

My honest opinion, and the bottom line here is, if the creator didn't make this anime a self insert for virgin incels who want women to only be sex objects and rely on them (and also be good at games, but not as good as them) then this anime could have been an amazing concept if it was executed correctly. Instead of a harem anime, it could have been a beautifully told story about recovering from trauma, finding friends and allies in the darkest places, and even learning to be vulnerable around others. This could have literally been THE show for Tumblr kids, or anyone with mental illness tbh. Again, just my thoughts, tell me yours! I hate this anime so much, but I'm open to other opinions 😢

Daichi secretly can make some kick ass steak and is amazing at grilling sorry

Okay but real talk, Kenma and Yaku swear like sailors and it scares everyone because they always whisper the most foul, insulting things under their breath. Hearing it is like seeing a cryptid

Speaking of cryptids, Fukunaga and Shibayama are THE most true crime, mythology, and mystery obsessed fanatics on the team and often fanboy about it together

Fukunaga’s obsession with moth man has gotten to an unhealthy stage

Kenma absolutely had a vampire phase and has read twilight. Only Kuroo knows and has sworn to secrecy via blood pact

Kuroo’s a musical nerd. Knows all of the lyrics to Hamilton, BMC, DEH, Heathers, Rent, Beetlejuice, Etc. Kenma considered dropping him because of it

Iwaizumi tells the worst dad jokes and Kyotani, wanting to beat him, started doing it too and it drives everyone insane

Yahaba and Matsukawa get along surprisingly well. Both are true crime freaks and bond over their forensic files obsessions

Matsukawa didn’t really like his thick eyebrows so he got one of his female friends to pluck it for him, but almost cried and gave up after the first hair. Oikawa called him a pussy for the next year

Hanamaki jokingly flirts with everyone on the team so most of them just got used to it, but it still confuses Kindaichi to the point of mental breakdown

Makki called Kyotani ‘puppy’ as a joke once and now mad dog is truly terrified of him

Kyotani’s dog absolutely ADORES Oikawa and it’s the funniest shit to the rest of the team

Mattsun and Makki play DnD and once convinced Yahaba and Kyotani to join. Kyotani kept rolling to fight everyone and Yahaba was a bard that kept rolling to seduce everyone. They kept yelling across the board so they had to kick them out

Outside of his school uniform, Goshiki specifically wears only plaid

Tendou makes little chocolates for the whole team every once in a while so they don’t think he’s scary

Semi and Shirabu once had a fistfight in an abandoned McDonald’s parking lot while Tendou filmed and Goshiki cheered them on

Everybody makes fun of Shirabu’s haircut but nobody dares to say it to his face. its gotten to the point where they say he got it done by a blind old lady

There’s a running joke about Shirabu also getting his haircut from prison but Goshiki is starting to suspect that it may not be a joke

Yamagata and Tendou are good friends with the mutual goal of collecting as much blackmail on their team as possible

Tendou loves animals generally considered to be ‘ugly’ like rats, crows, reptiles, etc.

80% of Goshiki’s playlist is shit overplayed on the radio. Him, Shirabu, Tendou, Kawanishi and Ushijima have a permanent ban from the aux cord

Kuroo has burnt his eyebrows off doing an experiment. His goggles didn't cover all his brows,,, so he just showed up to practice like that. No eyebrows and a chemical burn

kenma has played all kinds of games, but he was dared to play corpse party by kuroo. He wasn't scared because of the gore, he was thinking about the trauma the characters went through. Punched kuroo the next day because that game was fucked up

Lev isn't a strong swimmer, so he often grabs people by the head to keep himself up. happened with kenma and lev couldn't walk due to the force of kenmas suprised water kicks

akaashi has those fancy pens that you have to dip in ink and they're so nice

Bokuto has and will eat pencil erasers again

Daichi once almost lost his shit at his team but instead he lost his shit at the door that decided to stub his toe on the way out of the gym. not the best thing to be found yelling to.

Yamaguchi for sure has been dragged to one of terushimas parties because he didnt wanna say no. oh and terushima has like frat boy level parties too. Yams has for sure had some wild nights and doubts anyone other than Tsukishima and the party-goers will ever know

Akaashi can actually flirt very well! He reads romance novels sometimes and has analyzed any and every book in his possession! so he's actually quite charming

Daihsou unironically posted on twitter after mika broke up with him "I still see her shadows in my room"

Mattsun and Maki run a fake oikawa account; its been going ever since twitter even started getting popular and they even started sending messages in spanish. The posts would range from "I love all my fans!" to flirting with them :) Oikawa is pissed cause the account got verified before he did and most of his fans also follow the fake oikawa. Tooru has no idea who runs it JUST IMAGINE OIKAWA JUST LIKE RANTING TO THE SEIJOH 3RD YEAR ALUMNI AND JUST "no Iwa-chan, you dont understand! they run a fake account and pretend to be me!" while makki and mattsun laugh their asses off

Oh, kenma for sure has pretended to be a girl on discord and has gotten someone to buy him stuff. after they do he says in his normal voice "fucking simp" and then hangs up and blocks the other persons discord

Yamamoto, despite his rough appearance, loves kids and has and will be a human jungle gym

suna in middle school had a game with his friends about who could make kids cry the fastest

A Dumb Rant About A Webtoon

Okay so I’m actually super into reading webcomics (I read them on both Webtoon and Tapas), and although this has nothing to do with my blog (I AM considering making a side blog for webcomic content/reviews tho) I sort of feel like ranting about one that I saw. I’m sorry, but if you like Athena Complex this is probably going to piss you off. Admittedly, I couldn’t get far into the comic without being upset about this so I stopped reading a few chapters in, so that may affect my opinion here. This is mainly my opinion though, and if you disagree with me it’s fine.

So I did mention in my Fire Emblem kelpie beast unit post my opinion on mythological adaptation. Essentially, I believe that when you adapt any sort of mythological being into your story you need to keep these two things in mind:

The recognizable features/symbols/abilities: by this I mean what physical features is this being known to have, what are their physical/magical abilities, what objects are they most associated with, etc. You don’t need to have every single thing that is mentioned in the source material, just a decent combination of them that can allow the reader to easily connect the adaptation to the source material.

This factor mainly applies to individual characters as opposed to a full species or classification of creatures (I have read a decent number of mythological adaptations and have seen a mythical species depicted as evil in one adaptation and benevolent or neutral in another and enjoyed both, it all depends on if it makes sense in the context). What are the character’s main personal views, goals, and motivations? By this I mean how do they think and what are their views on the world around them, and what is the context surrounding that? Essentially, what can their main personalities and motivations be boiled down to and why?

After those two factors, I think that you can then go buck wild with any other characterization as long as it isn’t contradictory and makes sense in your story.

Now that I have set that down here’s my deal with Athena Complex. Athena Complex is a Webtoon based on Greek mythology that follows Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom and strategy. She falls in love with Poseidon, the god of the sea, and is rejected by him. Fueled by vengeance and a desire to win his heart she takes the form of a high school boy in order to take revenge on his reincarnation. Basically, this entire Webtoon is practically a public execution of a large part of what makes Athena, well, Athena.

First off, I will give credit to Athena Complex for at least getting the symbolism correct, Athena is a goddess of wisdom and war and when in the form of a goddess her design reflects that with her armor, among other things such as her association with owls, so the first aspect that I mentioned is fine.

Additionally there is the fact that they also did heavily tap into the prideful aspect of Athena’s nature. Essentially in the source material Athena is a VERY prideful goddess and will take any opportunity to prove her worth if someone attempt to upstage her, and gets very angry when she fails or is insulted in the process (ie the story of Arachne, the story behind the double flute). This aspect could also be seen slightly in Athena Complex’s Athena’s behavior, which I can also give them credit for.

But that’s where a lot of the similarities end. Tbh a large majority of these issues surround the second aspect, the basics of the figure’s personality and motivations.

First, Athena’s stance on romance. Original Athena...literally wanted nothing to do with any sort of romantic relationship. Seriously it’s one of her main things one of her epithets is literally “Parenthos”, which means virgin. No lovers, no sex, no marriage, no intentionally created children (I say intentionally bc she and Hepheastus accidentally created a child when his snot got onto a torn piece of her cloak, but that’s a different weird story), nothing. She solely focused on the expansion of knowledge and learning. She had no time for any sort of relationship. Making Athena in Athena Complex heavily motivated by an unrequited romantic attraction literally rips one of her main core values to shreds.

And this in my opinion one of the worst offenses, MAKING THE SUBJECT OF THAT ROMANTIC ATTRACTION POSEIDON. Literally one MAJOR thing for the original Athena and Poseidon is that they HATE each other. (Also Athena is literally Poseidon’s niece, but tbh that’s a less heinous crime bc Greek mythology was weird about that shit, multiple gods married their siblings/cousins/uncles/aunts/nieces/nephews/etc., it’s weird. Also in Athena Complex Poseidon acted the main person raising Athena, which is ALSO really fucking weird and concerning, anyway back to why they hate each other).

The Contest for Athens: Basically before the Greek city of Athens was called Athens the people were looking for a patron deity, and both Athena and Poseidon tried to lay their claim. In order to determine who the city would go to, they decided to have a contest of who could give the city the best gift. Poseidon gave the city some horses (for transportation and farmwork) and a small spring in the middle of the city (note: the water in the spring was salt water and therefore undrinkable). Athena gave them olive trees (for food, making oil, wood, etc.). The peoplr decided that Athena’s gift was better and thus named the city “Athens” after her, leaving Poseidon incredibly salty.

The Medusa Incident (TW: possible rape/non-con): So Poseidon was having a nice little affair with a mortal woman named Medusa (you notice how this name is familiar, right? that’s important). It’s a little iffy on whether or not this affair was fully consensual on Medusa’s end due to the sort of victim blame-y aspects to this story, hence the trigger warning. So Poseidon his having his fun and decides to find a nice little place they can go to do the nasty. Where does he think would be a great idea? One of Athena’s temples of course! You know, a literal place of worship dedicated to his rival who is known to dislike involvement in romantic/sexual relationships? Nothing could go wrong at all! They of course get caught, and Athena, being pissed, decides to curse Medusa with snakes for hair and the ability to turn people into stone just by looking at them (see why the name was familiar?) For good measure she also curses Medusa’s two sisters with the snake hair. The sisters are then dubbed the Gorgons and then go live in isolation on a island until they are killed by Perseus (a hero that Athena was helping).

So this Webtoon completely ignores the context behind this hatred and decides to make it into an enemies to lovers story based on unrequited feelings (the feelings of a person for their childhood caretaker too...still weird). I guess they wanted to do enemies to lovers and such based on a rivalry dynamic, but in doing so they erased most of the actual substance behind that rivalry by making it romantic and destroying the characterization of one of the main characters.

I can understand taking creative liberties, but before you do so you NEED to have a full understanding of the characters that you are adapting. If a mythological character is known for a certain practice (refraining from romance) or for having an extreme distaste for another figure (Athena hating Poseidon), INCLUDE IT. You NEED to have all of the bare bones basics before you start taking liberties.

For example, the original Athena:

Goddess of wisdom and strategy

Association with owls, olives, carries a shield known as Aegis

Highly values learning and knowledge

Prideful to a fault

Virgin goddess with no interest in romantic or sexual relationships

Extreme hatred for Poseidon as a result of repeated negative encounters

Those are the bare bones basics, after that you can do what you want.

Honestly I don’t think that this Webtoon is necessarily BAD, but it is VERY annoying when you have the context behind these characters (hence my frustration and inability to make it past 10 chapters). In my opinion, if the author wanted to write this storyline, they should have made their own OCs as opposed to butchering a pre-existing figure’s characterization.

(Also I’m so sorry I know that this isn’t relevant to my argument BUT THE POSEIDON REINCARNATION LOOKS SO BORING HE LOOKS LIKE A BACKGROUND CHARACTER WHERE IS THE FLAVOR????)
