OMG "Kelnon, Prompter of Matthew Keller" I love that! It makes me feel like a knight of the round table lol. Thank you for bestowing me the honor of being knighted, I'm glad I could make your morning better! And yes, I agree ol' Matty boy certainly does have a long way to go since he tends to keep all of his emotions locked away far down in the deep hole of his mind. It's like what Neal said to him during the last episode of the show.

[SPOILER WARNING FOR ANYONE WHO HASN'T SEEN WHITE COLLAR GO CHECK IT OUT IT'S GREAT]

Matthew is once again giving Neal shit for being "too trusting," and Neal hits him where it hurts by saying that yeah, maybe he is very trusting but he also has many people in his life who truly care about him. Whereas Matthew is all alone in the world. And Ross McCall is such an amazing actor cuz you can see for a split second that Matthew was indeed hurt by what he said! There's this flash of pain in his eyes that slips away just ad quickly as you see him put on his "bad boy" persona again to protect himself. And then only minutes later have Peter shoot him dead, and the camera pans out to show him all alone with no one to mourn him??? So poetically tragic, I love it. One of the best TV villains!

Sorry for the long ramble lmao has it been made very apparent yet that I love him? Is it starting to become clear? Anywho, I'd also be curious to know what the "meet-cute" was for the reader and Matthew and at what point did both of them realize "oh shit, I might feel something for this person!?" But that's not an official request or anything! Only you get to choose what you write and don't write, and I totally respect that. I hope you're doing well! 💗

I have always felt that Matt is very aware of his status as a 'Blue Collar Criminal'. Neal describes him as such in one of the ep. I feel like Matt is very working class, he knows what it's like to have to fight to survive, I imagine he suffered an abusive childhood with his father in a criminal gang and he had to 'work' otherwise he didn't eat or was punished. He learned the family business in a brutal way. He is ridiculously practical because he was never allowed to have the same moral opportunities as Neal. Emotions are weakness is a lesson he learned from a very young age and it's made him hard.

I think he had a very traumtic event in his youth regarding a woman betraying him. I imagine he fell in love, considered going straight and his father killed her so he would learn that love is a weakness and because he wanted to keep him close. I believe in return Matt killed his father before disappearing and making a name for himself. I don't think he has ever had a person who actually cared about him. Even the girl he was associated with was on his father's payroll, she was set up as a learning experiance. He felt genuinely for her but she did not for him. His father still killed her anyway because he could see the depth of Matt's feelings and thought he needed to learn that lesson.

I think Avery is a naturally warm, empathetic person but she's very coveted in their world. I think a lot of criminals playing at their level struggle to form relationships outside of other criminals because it means hiding those aspects of yourself. You can't tell your partner you're stealing a Monet because if you're caught they will become an accomplice so you have to have a secret life and that fractures a relationship. Also their world is very male dominated so the ratio of attractive women is very limited so Avery is used to getting hit on ALOT by the men she works with which makes her guarded. She has walls but she isn't afraid to be herself, she knows who she is and she doesn't try to hide it and that's what Matt finds attractive. She's the most direct and upfront person he knows, she cuts through all the bullshit and she sees through his bullshit.

I imagine they met through a joint assignment possibly through Neal. Game recongised game, afterwards they worked a few ops on their own. I think Matt loved the way she made him laugh, I think it's been a long time since he's allowed himself to relax. I think he fell in love with her ability to be open when he's so closed off. I think the moment he realised he was in love was when he found himself telling her about his history because she asked him to tell her something real about himself.

I think for her it started off very much as sex. Matt's attractive, intelligent, dangerious but he's emotionally unavailable, which originally made her feel safe as there was no danger of attachments. They had similar tastes and became very attuned to each other as lovers. I think it was very on and off, usually when they were in each other's orbit by accident and then I think for Matt it started becoming less accidental. I think for her she realised she enjoyed spending time with him outside of the bedroom. I have this image that once when they were casing a place as couple they both sat down in front of a painting they had no interest in stealing and he told her how he felt when he looked at it. Not from a technical stand point but from an emotional one and it really resonated for her because he was describing real feelings in that moment, something she had never seen from him before and she realised there was incredible emotional depth under the surface. Afterwards I think she took him for gelato and it became more like a real date, her arm linked through his as they walked through the park. They started doing more couple like things after that, dinner, wine tastings, art showings, things that weren't related to jobs they were pulling, things they actually enjoyed doing together.

❣️ Between Us - this sure was a surprise for me because my expectations for this show were 6 feet under lmao. I don’t like New’s series and I wasn’t a fan of winteam in uwma so I was getting ready to take a quick peek and then drop it but,,,, yeah. it’s good lmao. they’re doing an excellent job at integrating it into the uwma timeline while giving us a vast amount of nostalgic moments. It’s a surprisingly good production and I’m very impressed. The cast has had a big glowup acting-wise which is amazing to see while still getting the familiar vibes from uwma. I love it so far.

Learned Mortality | Night 1 (Part 2) | Art Thread + Behind the Scenes

Hey everyone! Another Learned Mortality session has come and gone, and with that I have a whole slew of artworks to share with you all! This episode was a wild ride, so let's get right to it.

First off, the convoy that was seen travelling north in King's Pass. Not much is known about this frostbitten yet, so I will save that for when it's revealed ^-^

Where the WIld Things Are got dropped this session! I love these wolves, they have a very fun "Science Factoid" about them, the calls they make are the same sounds that reverberate through ice cores and on lakes when ice impacts ice. They use their mallet-like tongues to communicate battle strategies to each other and empower their own attacks.

They've also learned to create projectile-like ice shards by dipping their tails in water and using the collected mass like a bow.

These are the first frostbitten artworks I finished for this game and defined the style I would use going forward!

So now I'd like to get into the map assets I've created for this game. As the scenarios I want to create get more and more complicated, the limitations of Roll20's default map assets become greater. I've created an array of parts that are used to create The Lucky One's network of flesh which act as its ears and feelers throughout the Titanic dungeon.

Ice is also hard to come by. These ice assets were made by me.

The Lucky One!

The main "antagonist" of this episode, aside from our boi murph. The Lucky One was originally going to be Murphy's stand, with the idea that Murph would be a "Frostbitten Sympathizer". This idea was scrapped as I felt it would be more horrific for Murphy to be aware he's being controlled, but have completely given up fighting it because of his shit luck making it impossible to fight back against this Frostbitten's luck-negation ability.

The purpose of this frostbitten is unknown, but in the documentation notes it is referred to as "The Alchemist".

It was able to see through Murphy's infected eye, feel through its feelers, and "hear" through its ear extensions that are laid out throughout the titanic. Its hearing is very bad, as it relies on vibrations and its sense of touch more than something like a human's hearing.

Fun Fact: the party was able to discern that there was something weird in the air at the start of the dungeon, but I wanted to make it very difficult to tell that there was actually anything infecting them. The spores would have begun to take hold if the party had decided to spend the night in the Titanic before continuing on, for example.

Edit: Some additional thoughts I remembered to add; Its head is shaped like a Four Leaf Clover ( four hand clover lmao ). It has a heart on its stomach exposed externally, and it has a cape billowing in the wind to mock the classic "My Heart Will Go On" Titanic scene / song. Its one leg has a walky-talky wrapped around it to imply that Murphy can "talk" to it, before Murph even reveals that. Its feet are tied and there are ice shards jutting into them. The clawing hands coming out of the shards represent the deaths of all of those on the Titanic who couldn't do anything to escape their fate... just like Murphy.

My boi murph. Just ain't his lucky day...

Based on the concept of "Murphy's Law", and designed off of the Police Officers in the music video for Tooboe's "Shinzo".

I'm working backwards because it's late and I think I need more energy to get 235 out so I'm going to jump on this one, first lol I hope you guys don't mind! I'd like to get 235 out tomorrow before the ep goes out for those who like to come and check after the free post drops lol also I just REALLY want to catch up on these because I like having all my thoughts in one place and I didn't manage to hit up reddit for 236 last week - I was sick and I could not pull myself together for it ;~; So I'm flying by the seat of my pants! Also I just really want to get this one up before tomorrow, too, because I want to put down my thoughts/predictions/wants and see what actually comes out of it LMAO

KOUSUKE KNOWS KOUSUKE KNOWS KOUSUKE KNOWS KOUSUKE KNOWS!

Kousuke's arc continues to blow me away because I was SO certain we wouldn't get a lot of this until much, much later, in season 2 or something, so having this established before we move into our timeskip feels INSANE but it also makes me feel insane wondering where it's going to leave him, what it's going to do to him to learn this, reeling from this truth.

It's hard enough to digest that you've been roofied, much less IN A HOSPITAL by your own mother. That it was a dosage of benzos and oxy HIGH ENOUGH that it would knock a man out (AND DID as evidenced by the poor man who received Kousuke's leftover breakfast) and that it demonstrates how high his tolerance must be that he merely felt hung over.

That he was already wary of the medication Yui tried to give him at the restaurant was insane. That he was already wary of her even though he couldn't understand quite why. That he knew, definitively, something is so wrong with him he didn't care that Hansuke stole his blood vials and tested against Yui's wishes showed just how uncomfortable he is. But his response to the lack of answer!!!! To test him again! Blood AND urine! GOD I was screaming over THAT alone!

Also I have to say it but Kousuke in his Santa hat is so cute. I know I'm patronizing him, I know it's infantilization because he looks so uncertain and so very unlike himself with his discomfort and worry and unease that it makes him look so small and childlike but what can ya do? I like it when we get to see the haughty, confident characters knocked down a few pegs. Or a whole ladder lmao

Also also REALLY living for the Hansuke, Kousuke, Yujing dynamic. It is FUN! It is GOOD, it's what Kousuke needs lmao though I worry that Yui will do everything she can to box out Hansuke, depending on how Kousuke uses what he knows. But for now I'm going to enjoy it. There was something SO FUNNY about Yujing calling Hansuke "babe" and Kou's head popping out from between their seats going "BABE?!" ALKJFKAJFKJAFJKAFKJ SIR PLS CALM YOURSELF!!!!!

But MAN he's getting to THE realization. He's connecting the dots that Hansuke, bless his heart, is unwilling to connect, despite the very good points Yujing is bringing up. Being someone's mom does not mean you are going to make good choices for your child. We've seen fandom run with this thought before, too - that Yui can't possibly be manipulating Kousuke, that she just has alternative parenting. Hansuke, too, falls for the image, for the idea that a mother only wants what's best, that she has his best interests in mind. But like Yujing pointed out - it's so very clear that Kousuke is NOT okay, so why did they clear him? Why did she order him not to run the tests? Any doctor can see Kousuke shouldn't have been released, but a doctor in the hospital run by their FAMILY....?

Kousuke may not be voicing it yet but he knows. GOD, he knows. And the most interesting part is that when he's falling back into that spiral, when he's going back into that unresponsive state, not paying attention to what's going on, he sees Nol's bloodied phone - Nol's phone covered in the bloodshed caused by KOUSUKE'S doing - he uses THAT to anchor himself to the present. He picks up the phone and remembers holding Nol. I've been wondering how much he remembers about that, because he was SO RESOLUTE that Nol didn't harm him, that HE was the one who was hurt, that something was wrong. For that memory to resurface and be what grounds him when the realization that his own mother has drugged him with a lethal combination of drugs that should have done far more than made him feel like he has a hangover.... GOD.

Where does he go with this? He has to start suspecting, right? Because for him to have that tolerance, the obvious conclusion to jump to is that this is not the first time. The times that sweets did the trick and made him feel better - and the time he made them himself and they didn't. The times tea comforted him after particularly stressful experiences - and the brother who has such a strong aversion to it. Will he recall any of the conversation between Rand and Yui when he was passed out? I think, perhaps over the course of some time, we're going to watch that paranoia and fear grow. All this time he feared Nol, he worried about Nol - but Yui was the one to fear, right under his nose, orchestrating everything so that he would be left dependent on her.

UGH.

He knows he can't trust her, but who can he trust? The chef who prepares food for him that always does the trick? The thing about Yui is that Kousuke knows she has people everywhere, and that's the very horrifying thing about his situation. How many pockets is she lining? How many people does she have at her beck and call, to administer whatever she needs of them? Who do you trust when the one person you've relied on - because his own father is so absent and unavailable, also boxed out by his mother - is the very person who you can't trust, who has taken advantage of you?

And where will Meg and Rand's gift come into this? Before, Kousuke jumped on Meg as the only likely option he could think of - Meg who stalked and harrassed him, Meg who brought him the only food/drink outside of the parties. Meg who he acknowledged wasn't like that. It's not the first time Meg would have brought him something that he didn't want to be true - first telling him that Shinae had been drugged. Would he ignore this, too, a gift she says she found in the trash? A gift clearly from his father, disposed of by who else but his mother? Surely those are dots he could connect. And again, what do you DO with that? With the knowledge that she's drugging you, that she replaced the gifts with something so tacky and lacking of familiarity with who he is, especially compared to the actual gift that was thrown out. Will it make him wonder what else Yui has disposed of, traded in, how many other times he'll recall his father admitting that he didn't know this event was on this date that she didn't tell him?

There are SO MANY fissure cracks forming under Kousuke's feet and at the end of the day HOW is he supposed to deal with it, when you can't trust your mom, the people she hires, maybe your family? When you realize that she's been drugging you, that she's been driving that wedge between yourself and your father, that she's ensured you are dependent and reliant upon her, that she has access to all aspects of his life there is nowhere he can evade her he has nowhere to escape to.

GOD IT'S ALL JUST SO INSAAAAAAAAAAANE!!!!!

I still can't get over him using Nol's phone - the concept of NOL - to anchor himself, to ground him as he's reeling from a horrifying realization too big to digest, too overwhelming to handle. It's Nol who he tethers himself to, Nol he uses as a distraction, to pull himself out of these thoughts.

THE TRAGEDY OF THESE BROTHERS WILL NEVER CEASE TO GET TO MEEEEEEEEEEE I'M HOWLING

And then on the flip side we know aaaahhhhhh the long-awaited Dieter and Nol talk is COMING. I just knew it, when Dieter said he'd just go back home and they'll go visit Nol together tomorrow that he was lying and he absolutely was going to see Nol on his own, duh, we all saw that coming but I AM STILL LOOKING FORWARD TO IT! But I'd like to actually acknowledge WHY I am and what I look forward to, since it's not solely about the romance at play.

What Dieter saw when Shinae and Nol thought he was asleep wasn't just that his fears, the things he suspected, had been right all along. It wasn't just that he saw the girl he likes and his best friend flirting. It was all the things he realized he didn't know.

Dieter already made a comment about it - that they didn't realize how bad things were between the brothers and "some friends we are". Because on some level, Dieter has acknowledged it's true - there were so many things about Yeonggi worth questioning that they just didn't, whether it was because Nol isn't forthcoming about the answers, or because he was afraid of pushing him away. We even saw Shinae play with this concept, when she wanted to press him about his family but stopped herself because she was worried he'd run away again. That moment when Nol and Shinae's dance ends, when they have that little spat, was not Yeonggi. It was someone Dieter had never really met, because out of their group, Dieter is the one who knows the least about Nol. About his life, about his relationships. He only knows Yeonggi.

Think about this. Dieter sees Nol on tv, pleading guilty to something he didn't even KNOW about, with a name he didn't know, finding out he's the illegitimate son of Rand. That Yui isn't his mom! Nol blocks all of them, won't take their calls, won't receive them at their home. He finds Shinae in the rain crying, watches as she falls apart in his bed. Nol tells them not to contact him again and basically that he's peacing out.

And then suddenly there he is at Minhyuk's party. He didn't even arrive through the front door!

And there he is, bleeding out on the snow!

Dieter knows NOTHING. Not why Nol left. Not why he came back. Not why he hides himself from them. Not why he pushes away Shinae like he does the rest of them. Not why he cares so much about them but won't let himself have them.

Of course Dieter is hurt. His friend is a lie. His BEST friend, the first friend he made in Korea, the friend who has done everything to be a good friend to him. The friend who tried to play Cupid for him and the girl he likes. He's a LIE what about him is real? He doesn't know him! And not only that but he doesn't TELL him anything.

Dieter has no way to know that Nol has only just realized his feelings for Shiane. In fact, Dieter has been watching those feelings develop between Nol and Shinae for a while, taking note of that chemistry, the ways they veer towards each other, the different relationship that they have. And what hurts is probably not that they like the same girl (or rather, not only that, because I'm sure that hurts) but that Nol couldn't TELL him that. That he couldn't say Hey man I think we gotta talk about this I gotta get something off my chest.

Dieter probably feels like Nol can't trust him. Or maybe he feels like Nol thought so little of his feelings. Maybe he thinks he could have just hid it forever and then left and it wouldn't matter, like Dieter wouldn't have been left picking up the pieces of Shinae, yearning for a girl yearning for someone else.

It's that Nol didn't tell him anything. Nothing about his family, or who he is, or what was happening in his life. Did Dieter know that Nol was going to trial? I'm sure he had NO idea. Does Dieter even know what happened that night? That they were at the formal together? That Shinae got hurt? I don't think he does! There's SO MUCH he doesn't know.

But also.... he doesn't ask. I think he's afraid of scaring Nol off, of pushing him away, but he also knows that that makes him a bad friend, too. Nol put everyone's needs first all the time, deflects when it comes to himself and they let him. They took him at his word, even when they know better.

I want Dieter to call Nol out.

"Aren't we friends? Why can't you tell me things? Why do you keep pushing us away? Do we mean that little to you?"

And I want him to acknowledge that he, too, should have reached out more.

"I'm sorry I didn't pry more. I'm sorry I was so complacent. I'm sorry for being afraid of scaring you off by caring too much."

It's about SO MUCH MORE than just that they like the same girl. That may be an elephant in the room, but it's more about the way they've been friends. Obviously Dieter cares about Nol, but Dieter is also resigned to people walking away, to people leaving. He's so used to moving around and losing touch that perhaps he felt this was all only natural. I want him to fight for his friendship just like Shinae! I want him to call out Nol on boxing them out! We're friends so let us be there for you! We're friends so lean on us! We're friends so please share yourself with us!

Can you be okay if he left, Dieter, and just became yet another former friend?

But also yes I do want him to call out Nol on how he's treating Shinae. That yeah, he's treating them all pretty awfully considering how much they love each other, but he knows what he saw and "if you're pushing her away for my sake, don't. I'm not a little child, I can handle it." I want him to remind Nol that these are not his decisions alone to make, that yEAH it impacts Shinae. What good is it if they like each other but "sorry Dieter likes you so I'm going to push my feelings away we can't do this" because if she doesn't like Dieter - and she doesn't - what does it matter? And would Dieter want to be the one standing in their way? Please. I'm begging this kid to stand up for himself, he's not going to pull a gross, possessive man treating a girl like an object to be claimed move.

Something that I must remind people again is that Dieter knew what he was doing. He knew Shinae doesn't like him like that. He knew that she and Nol have something he doesn't. He was still hopeful, he still tried - and good for him, I'm glad he did! He gave it his best and it didn't work out but at least he can't regret not trying. He hoped that maybe, over time, what exists with Nol and Shinae could develop between them but it's clear to him now that's not how it works.

Shinae didn't betray Dieter.

Nol didn't betray Dieter.

Dieter knew and he hoped anyway because sometimes all you have is hope, but he's not someone to hold that against people.

you should 100% watch derry girls, it is so hilarious omg! as an irish/english person who is growing up in england, it is literally the funniest show i've watched recently! all three seasons are *chefs kiss* brilliant.

gilmore girls is also great! i do love rory and logan together, i just love logan in general. the more i watch the show, the more i come to think of him as rory's best love interest! you should defintly try it out! i won't say anymore on that so as not to spoil anything.

i am really excited for maisie peters second album, body better, to be released as i am obsessed with the lead single and love her music! i haven't listened to paramours album yet but i've been meaning to, same with gracie abram's discography. i'm gonna try to listen to all of gracies stuff before her next album release.

as for marvel, i used to like it a lot, but i think that was more because everyone else did and i wanted to feel included. now tho, the films just seem kinda lifeless. like there are so many filmos and tv shows being mass produced by them that none of it feels unique or authentic, and all the dialogue is just sarcastic and quick witted and kinda mean. idk, i'm just not really that into it anymore. i liked tom hollands spiderman films though, and i've been meaning to watch andrew garfields spiderman for a while.

yeah see marvel movies are mostly alright and very surface level but honestly they messed a lot of things up with endgame that it's made me lose the love i had for some movies. i've always loved the ant man movie and fantastic four is literally the only other project i'm excited for. I hate how they cancelled great shows so only disney+ shows remain and now everytime I watch something i just think about the potential they had lmao i could rant on it all day long....

toms movies are okay but nwh is the only goood one for me and i love the amazing spiderman movies the most!!

djats i liked the style of the book and its inspired by fleetwood mac and the civil wars (both artists i've never listened to lol) and the band is supposed to be 70s rock which i have no idea what that sounds like so I'm excited for the music but from all the promo they clearly have changed some scenes from the book which kinda made me less excited but i'm still gonna watch it i just think the discourse about "ships" when it's released is going to be inssuferable lol i think mostly i'm excited to expand on a few of the side characters storylines more

i think like majority people i prefer the six of crows duology to the shadow and bone trilogy (its not bad just the other one is sooo good) and honestly the shows okay but the things i've heard about season 2 like joining both book 2+3 for the plot of the second season i'm just so confused about the direction but it's not long till it's released now (literally everything is releasing in march lol)

now onto taylor! your top 3s are so superior omg!!!! the coney island and labyrinth appreciation! you're literally after my heart!!! what rerecordings are you most excited for? do you have any unreleased tracks you would really like on some of the vaults!! the two lover tracks omg those snippets are soooo goood i really really want them released!!!!!

well now i've thought about it there's actually a lot of things i'm excited for this year!! creed 3 is coming out next month i love those movies! and john wick 4! across the spiderverse looks absolutely incredible! apparently there's a new insidious movie coming out this year (it's my comfort horror series lol) hafsah faizals new book a tempest of tea which is pitched as king arthur meets peaky blinders with vampires!!!!!!! it's alll the things i love! and it's the one book i'm most excited for!! speaking of peaky blinders the movie is filming this year and any behind the scenes crumbs i'm so ready for!! the pjo tv show its looking like its not going to coming out until next year but I'm anticipating at least a trailer since filming has ended and we're getting a new pjo book with percy, annabeth and grover again as well as the solangelo book called the sun and the star! also the little mermaid movie she's absolutely going to kill it!! and is it wishful thinking to say speak now tv (which my dream release date of this year would be september 1st! it's a friday 🙏) and so many other things but this message is getting very long lol

honestly same! i'm literally made up of the media's i consume lol my life is pretty boring and all i've done this year so far is get job rejections and get ill lmao but the biggest source of comfort in my life is my nephew's who i look after almost every weekend :)

and i guess another little thing about me is my dream would be to write a book i have so many ideas in my head but o can't seem to get them on paper, even just practising writing a scene i find hard to do. i think at most i just want to learn how to write. i don't even think it'd go anywhere like i don't think anything will be ready to publish or whatever but just for myself i think it'd help free up my mind if i got my ideas out of my head and fully thought out and wrote a book. what about you? what's your dream job or passion? is there anything new you're trying out or want to? anything you'd want to go back and revisit?

• extraordinary attorney woo: i am absolutely obsessed with this one, my little neurodivergent heart is so blessed. like all media, esp with autistic folk, it has its flaws, but it is so far the best and loveliest depiction of an autistic character i've ever seen. highly recommend!!

• triage: bestieeeeeeees, i am a huge sucker for a good time loop, and one in a medical drama??? *chef's kiss*

• link: eat love kill: this show is absolutely everything—romance, comedy, thriller, fantasy, drama, mystery—and has absolutely everything—weird psychic link, cooking, twin sister murder revenge plot, pathetic little meow meow, unlucky girlboss. what's not to love??

• my secret love: i'm kinda behind on this one, yet it's one of my favorite currently airing (for now, i've only seen 2.5 eps, so don't come for me if it soured). v cute and classic

• sh**ting stars: also behind on this one, i was waiting so impatiently for new eps that i forgot about it absjdbka. 2 eps left to go, though, and i love every second of it so far.

• a robot in the orange orchard: having such a good time with this one, it's so cute and sweet and funny and the female lead is so <3

• check out: idk why i'm watching this, it's so shit and v annoying and makes no sense. but i'm in too deep and i love the actors, so i'm still here

• minamdang cafe: only one ep in but i love this little found family of scammers and the detective girlboss

• stranger things s4 vol. 2: no one said this was an asian drama watchlist, lmao. i'm v slowly making my way through this bc 1. it's very long and 2. it's kinda eh, esp with the spoilers i've seen

• who rules the world: i went absolutely insane over this one when it first started airing, but then my parents and i started rewatching shl and watching this in between just made me ache for more shl, so now it's kinda on hold, but i'm keeping it in my currently watching list to hold myself accountable!

rewatching:

• shan he ling: the hyperfixation has lasted over a year, babeyyyy!! currently rewatching with my parents (my dad has seen up to ep 26 and my mom's never seen it) and i love it sm and want nothing more than to be watching it 24/7 but my parents have lives and i guess i do too (curse you uni summer classes and job!!), so we're watching very slowly.

• bad buddy: i already finished a full rewatch with my irl friend a little while ago, but another irl friend is on ep 10 so i'm rewatching along with her so that i can talk abt it without spoiling (and also to refresh my mind and go properly insane in out text convos)

as you can tell i'm watching wayyyy too many shows, so i'm getting through them pretty slowly, not to mention the fact that i'm currently spending most of my time listeing to the white vault, a horror podcast i'm incredibly hyperfixated on, absjsj. but such is the life of a gay person with adhd! thanks again to tay for tagging me, this was fun! i tag @ahxu-laowen @laowen @tipnaree @liyazaki @musicdramalove and anyone else who wants to!

brother crab's spring 2024 first impressions: spring 2024

ok ok ok now that everything's had at least one episode out i am finally finalizing my list with a rough preliminary ranking of everything

tl;dr for me? sentai daishikkaku and kaijuu 8-gou in the lead so far (and BY far)

top 3: sentai daishikkaku, kaijuu 8-gou, wind breaker (and shockingly yes in that order)

this is pretty unexpected for me because wind breaker was one of my most anticipated series of the season, and i knew nothing about the other two

kaijuu 8-gou had an incredible first episode, if it keeps that up i think it'll be an easy anime of the season. but sentai daishikkaku also had a great first ep and really won me over with its second, so if it stays just as compelling... also a strong contender

wind breaker so far is really good, but it doesn't feel like anything i haven't seen before, i guess. i don't mean that in a bad way! familiar comforts are, well, comfortable. nothing wrong with that

but sentai daishikkaku feels very fresh and unique to me, and i'm rather partial to kaijuu 8-gou with it featuring an older cast of characters, so those two have a bit more of my attention for now

ALSO GREAT: yuru camp s3, boukyaku battery, tadaima okaeri, sasayaku you ni koi wo utau

THRILLED to be able to put both the yaoi of the season and the yuri of the season in this category. tadaima okaeri is cuter than words can expression, this is for sure going to be a highlight of my week every week. sasayaku also had such a cute and fun first episode! i'm an anime only for this one so will be looking forward to where the story goes (and hoping it stays that good)

yuru camp is yuru camp. what else needs to be said. extremely cute

boukyaku battery had a very compelling start too, definitely comes close to a top 3 for me after one episode. the seiyuu cast is really crushing it

REALLY FUN: astro note, yozakura-san chi no daisakusen

both enjoyable and entertaining, set just ever-so-slightly down a tier from the others for me for now, but feel like they both have even more room to grow on me (and already did grow on me between eps 1 and 2)

not bad: jii-san baa-san wakagaeru, re:monster

jii-san baa-san is honestly not quite what i hoped it'd be, it's heavier on the gag comedy than i would've wished. i think i would've preferred more of a softer, warmer, iyashikei-type slice of life series. but! that is not the show's fault, and it is not bad for what it is

re:monster isn't really outstanding but i'm having a good enough time for what it is also

in both cases i'm really liking the cast. mikishin is just so perfect for the grandpa voice, and satotaku is satotaku

dropped: the fable, hibike euphonium s3 (LET ME EXPLAIN)

hibike is not actually dropped of course lmao it is one of the ones i was most looking forward to, but before i started i decided to take it off my list for this season. i watched both of the previous seasons after they were out and really want to binge this one too, instead of going week by week, so it's not a drop so much as a pushed off for later

as for the fable... it feels like a shame to say it, but i wasn't vibing with this one. the manga scores or so high so maybe it's just a sense of humor that didn't translate well into anime form for me, or maybe it's just a sense of humor that's not for me full stop

either way i think i'm going to call it quits on this one even though i wanted to check it out for the cast

the only series i haven't started yet is karasu wa aruji wo erabanai because of some funky streaming timeline for the first ep... and now two are out so i have to catch up...... still looking forward to this one but alas i will have to get to it when i get to it

at this point,, you werent exactly very familiar with the boys but not new so you were kinda already part of the family but there hasnt been any,,,,, deep attraction (??) that developed by the others yet

but this doesnt mean that they arent territorial or protective you!!!

when yall walked in the hallway, you were already catching looks bc wow seijoh just has everything huh

you were walking behind coach irihata until you overheard someone asking where oikawa was and you saw yahaba sweat a little when he didnt know where his captain was

while iwa went to go and get the captain, you had to do a head count to make sure no other player was missing

kunimi and kindaichi were glaring at other players who were eye-ing you since they were in charge of you whenever iwa or oikawa were gone

but mattsun and makki were publicly making it clear that you were,,, theirs

‘y/n-chan, come give senpai a hug. hes nervous for today’

makki whined and again, you werent very familiar with them yet, but familiar enough to give them their hugs

he hugged you from behind while you reviewed their notes and with his chin on your head, his eyes mockingly glared at the different schools with a smirk playing on his lips

my god were they such drama queens like bls

finally, oikawa arrived and he skipped over to you

‘y/n-chaaaannnn!!!! oikawa-san is sorry for leaving you aloneee!!!!!!’

but you didnt even look at him, continuing your review

‘dont do that next time, oikawa-san. you made iwaizumi-san look for you and held up the team’

you bluntly scolded and oikawa had teary eyes

‘y-y/n-chan, im really sorry! y/n-chan!’

he wailed and ripped you away from makki and into his arms instead

meanwhile,,, the other teams are like 👁️👄👁️

you continued your walk to the gym but oikawa had his arm around you, as if telling others you were his while iwa held your hand as he sent everyone a warning with his eyes like if they laid a finger on you, he would snap their arms in half

it made their blood boil as the eyes of these,,, testosterones,,, kept staring at you and running their eyes up and down and you squeezed iwa’s hand before he could go over and rip their eyeballs out of their face

woah there mister

as you entered the gym’s bleachers, oikawa kept you in his arms and the karasuno team were confused bc they didnt see a manager when they had their practice match

‘yohoo, tobio-chan, chibi-chan’

you sighed and gave the black and orange team an apologetic smile

when iwa smacked oikawa, you bowed slightly

‘sorry about him’

oikawa hurriedly hid you behind him and pouted

‘no, stay away from their sights, y/n-chan. theyre not worthy to lay their eyes on you’

you elbowed him though

‘what kind of nonsense are you spouting?’

‘but you are oikawa-san’s, y/n-chan!’

he whined and tobio was like, ‘oh, another girlfriend then’

bahahaha, hes so used to seeing his upperclassman with a girl and hes just like, ‘best of luck’

you shook your head and raised a hand with a smile

‘hello, my name is l/n y/n and im their manager. please excuse my captain and carry on to your warm-ups’

karasuno nodded wordlessly, taken aback by how cold yet pretty you were

it was like the younger version of their own kiyoko shimizu!!!

the others settled on their seats while iwa and kindaichi leaned over the railing to get a better view but oikawa was disinterested, arm around your shoulder and you were only closer to him due to his warmth

you pouted bc iwa-san was standing and you missed his warmth but oikawa would have to settle for now

the nearby teams that came to watch the match were giving you looks and especially the green-jacket team were staring so,,,, so hungrily,, at you and oikawa twitched at how disgusting it was

you were watching the game but was distracted when oikawa leaned his head on your neck, breath hitting your skin

‘oikawa-san? are you okay?’

you asked but he shook his head

‘oikawa-san really loves you, y/n-chan’

he made his voice a little louder to make his point across and the others diverted their gazes in a hurry when his cold smirk met their faces

you shrugged

‘thank you, oikawa-san’

makki and mattsun snickered at the dismissive answer but oikawa didnt care because all he wanted was to make the other boys back off

you heard oikawa mumble serveral times about some tobio-chan and you guessed it might have been the blueberry looking head that he taunted earlier since he couldnt have been a chibi

ngl, you were attracted by how seemed to ooze talent and you leaned forward, wanting to get more of a look of him

ofc OIKAWA THREW A RIOT and he pulled you back, placing a hand on your thigh

‘y/n-chan, careful, you might fall forward’

he stiffly warned but he truthfully didnt want you to get a closer look on his kouhai

you kept your gaze on the karasuno setter and held oikawa’s hand to get it off of your thigh

‘im okay, oikawa-san. i just want,,, a better look’

you mumbled and oikawa was staring at you intensely

oh my god, what if you recognized kageyama as a better player?

would you leave him?

would you think hes a terrible setter?

worries racked up on his brain but he snapped out of it when you turned your head after feeling his stare

‘are you okay, oikawa-san?’

you asked, worriedly since he was pale and his eyebrows were furrowed

‘y/n-chan, do you think tobio-chan is better than me?’

he asked, eyes focused on your face but so faraway

you quirked your eyebrows but still answered

‘no, i dont think so. ive never seen him play before and this is my first time so ive never really gotten a gauge of his skills. besides, youre really good so its unlikely hes better than you, or anybody else for a fact. your sets look so much,,,, whats the word,,, connected?,, yea, much more connected therefore better for our team but his is very,,, glitchy,,,?? other than that, youre still better than anybody else in my eyes. why? are you doubting yourself again, oikawa-san? because if you are, i will bonk you again’

you threantened but he let out a relieved chuckle

he placed a hand on top of your head and ruffled your hair, a smile on his face then bowed his head low

‘go on, then, y/n-chan. bonk oikawa-san’

you turned to share a bewildered look with yahaba and watari

‘no. because you asked me to, i wont. youre so weird, oikawa-san. wanting me to do weird things to you and being so confusing’

you mumbled cutely and oikawa bit his lip to contain his squeal but held your hand tighter

‘y/n-chan, youre not good for oikawa-san’s heart’

he whined but you punched his arm

‘be quiet, oikawa-san. look, that chibi’s flying!’

you pointed and that was enough to distract him from you and towards the game

when his gaze was away, you gave him a worried glance

you heard from iwa that he was insecure and suffers from inferiority complex but you didnt know it was this bad

that was it

you were going to help him realize he was a great player and he is equal with everyone and no one is above him because hes talented and his hardwork makes up for those losses

when karasuno emerged as victors, the team stood up to make their leave and prepare for their own match but you strayed away, claiming you needed to use the bathroom

‘we’ll wait for you, y/n-chan!’

oikawa said but you waved your hands no

‘i-,,, need to use it and besides, i have a friend here! please, go ahead!’

iwa gave you a suspicious glance

‘who is it? we can still wait’

you pouted and huffed before giving them your puppy eyes

their eyes widened and they nodded, stuttering that they will meet you in the gym

when they were finally out of sight, you ran down hallway and finally found the black-jacket team gathered by an entrance

it was hinata who noticed you and pointed at you, claiming you are the goddess seijoh manager

but you didnt mind and focused on the blueberry

‘kageyama-san?’

you heard iwa mention him and you figured it was his last name

the poor boy was stuttering and awkwardly nodding in greeting

but you clenched your fists

‘i might not be a professional or a volleyball enthusiast but oikawa-san recognizes your talent and he considers you a rival so i do too. kageyama-san, karasuno, we will defeat you. you will face oikawa-san and iwaizumi-san and mattsun-san and makki-san and the others and you will tremble at our strength so play with everything you got because no matter what, we will win. congratulations on your win with your match but i noticed you holding back on them. if i see you, karasuno, kageyama-san, not playing your best, you will face my wrath. keep that in mind.’

you bowed deeply and they were so taken aback bc adkfj;sadfkjask what is going on why is this little chibi threatning them why is kageyama being pointed out what

sugawara let out a shocked chuckle before fussing at you to stand back straight and to not bow at them

you nodded but you held out your phone to the blueberry, a gentle smile on your face

‘i understand you are iwaizumi-san and oikawa-san’s underclassman from middle school. if you would, please exchange contacts with me and you can tell me stories about my boys so i can use it against them to rein them in whenever they get out of control, especially oikawa-san’

I literally can’t stop thinking about how the finale is going to play out for Greta and Riley and was wondering if you could give me your theories if you have any.

Like we know that they’re finally going to talk to each other but who do you think is going to initiate the conversation? What’s going to happen that they finally breakdown and talk? Also, what do you think is going on with Luz? Do you think she’s the one that tells Greta about her and Riley or does Riley tell her herself? Why else would Luz be at the party though? I’m having such a hard time picturing how it’s all going to play out in this one episode. Like there’s so much that needs to be addressed will it even end on a good note for them?? If the season ends with them on bad terms and we don’t get a season 2 I’ll be devastated.

Sorry that’s a lot of questions but I just want to know how you think it’s all gonna go down. I’ve loved reading all of your other theories and analyses!

alright alright let me answer this question by question lmao but this is all speculation ofc because I have NO IDEA

because the pics we have of the conversation are in riley's room and because she's been the one to try to initiate conversation the past three times we've seen them talk - in ep 14 when riley yells at greta, the 'wow greta you look great' line (still can't believe she said this on a group facetime aljsfdjsald) and their final almost-convo in ep 15 - it seems most likely that it will be riley who pulls her aside so that they can be alone in a room together (for like the third time ever!!!) and so that she can finally hear the end of 'actually I wanted to tell you'

on the other hand I'm also thinking that maybe greta has had enough of being interrupted. she's been trying to have this out with riley for so long that maybe on this third attempt she just shuts them in a room together so that she can say her piece. if she's been thinking over this one conversation and all the different ways it could go endlessly for days then maybe she just hits the point where she can't hold it in for a second longer

from the sneak peek where greta says 'I can like someone, like really like them' the only thing that makes sense to me is her explaining that she is actually extremely into riley, that she can really like someone if she's connected with them and that that person is riley. in the hug at the end of the sneak peek greta looks like she's crying so I've seen people speculate that it's like a goodbye hug or something, but if I had finally spilled my guts to this girl that I'm all in on I'd probably be bawling too. maybe riley pulls her in to tell her that everything is going to be alright, and that she's valid and that riley still likes her so much no matter what?? they're always so tentative with touching each other and the only other time they've hugged it was pretty brief and awkward at x files night, so that hug honestly just looks like relief to me. it must feel so good for both of them just to hold onto each other like that - a mirror of the hug between chester and riley in ep 14. some people just make you feel correct

in terms of luz being there, the afterparty at riley's house is filled with a bunch of other random people from their school like the party in the pilot so it's not weird to me that she's there. maybe luz is regretting giving up on greta and is coming back for a second try, or maybe she's just there to either have a good time or start drama idk at this point

this dialogue from ep 15 has me really interested to see whether riley chooses to perpetuate her dad's cycle of dishonesty because she feels she has no choice, or if she decides to diverge from this doomed path that she thinks is set for her because of who her parents are

if they're doing it just for the drama then she's obviously going to keep it from greta and then luz will come along to ruin everything, but I think it would be much more interesting for them to queer this narrative of untruth and subvert those expectations that we have. riley's not stupid, she knows it's going to hurt greta but I would love if they let her realise that keeping this from greta now is just going to make things worse in the long run

she already has that threat of 'not yet' from luz hanging over her head, and it would be so cool and different for there to be this conversation between the two of them that is just completely honest and sets them up with a clean slate to continue their relationship on. not that I think it will happen really but I'd also love for greta to hear about the hook up and tell riley 'okay I understand that you were upset that night and that made you act in a way that you regret. I don't hate you, you're not a bad person and you're not your dad' rather than being some massive shocking revelation, like that kind of patience and acceptance of trauma is something that we never really see

I really hope that riley tells greta everything that's happening with her home life as well. the 'stuff I don't wanna tell you' line was so pointed and I need her to know that greta is literally just worried because she cares about her so much, and that she honestly does just want to hear what riley's struggling with so she can help her carry that load. we've had two specific instances in ep 1 and ep 9 (funny how the two halves of the season start with this) where riley and greta have been trying to check in and ask the other if they're okay and also get interrupted, so this is finally a chance to not only talk about their own feelings but everything outside of that as well

I really hope this season will end on a good note. obviously they won't be able to resolve everything but even just having a little moment of something at the end of the episode, like that quiet car ride with that tiny hopeful uptick that is bo replying to chester at the end of ep 8 is kind of enough for me as long as we get a season two. I've said this before but ending a season of a show about queer people on some cliffhanger of pain and misery and chaos just seems like the absolute wrong message for any creator who is also queer to send. like that's why we make art that represents ourselves, to tell kids that it does get better, and there is hope and light and love at the end of the tunnel

not to compare this show to euphoria because I think it’s reductive but there's this thing that sam levinson says about his show that I think really applies here too with how zelda and her dads talk about this show and it makes me feel at least a little bit optimistic about this final episode:

'It’s about how if you keep your heart open, there are people who can change your life, and it’s about love, and it’s a show about being seen and heard and known. It doesn’t cure everything but it sure as fuck helps.'

So sorry thought I was done but there's more! (I've really enjoyed your analyses.) Thinking bout YH possibly being involved in SH's death and reasons he could be: callback to ep 8 convo bout doing whatever it takes, plot twist for sake of it, vindicate SH's anti-Yohan agenda, make audience suffer. Reasons he SHOULDN'T be: character development (see same convo!) - it would undo all his progress, everything he said about letting Gaon make his own choice, Elijah would never forgive him, etc. (1/2)

It should be evident to YH from Gaon's actions/words in this ep that he's still on side re. fighting the corrupt world - there's no pressing need to get rid of SH to get him back on track. Also YH being guilty would vindicate Min Jung-ho's anti-YH agenda, and so far I don't feel the show has invited the audience to sympathise/agree with him so that would be a weird turn around! Plus if SH had found out something bout YH wouldn't she have tried to tell Gaon in her last moments?? ...here's hoping!

Ahhh, thank you!!! I’m glad someone enjoys my annoying posts about this show, lmao. It’s just so much fun and hard not to constantly think about it when you’re always finding new little things.

And I think all of your points are very true, and I totally agree. I think the scene in episode 12 where they “break up” was enough for Yohan to realize that what he said and what he continued saying drove Gaon away. Gaon’s confession about Soohyun being his world and realizing that Gaon chose her over him was already reasonable and logical enough for him to understand that if Yohan did anything to her, Gaon wouldn’t be on his side. Gaon would go after Yohan, even without a plan - I firmly believe that.

Gaon rushed to the hospital and checked up on her when she got heart, for example. Him and Yohan fought over the possibility of Yohan attacking her, and Gaon found out it wasn’t him and apologized for making the assumption - that Yohan had no need to actually go after her. On top of that, Gaon even admitted to the professor while he was in the hospital that Yohan wouldn’t have attacked him, and yet he got mad at Gaon for taking Yohan’s side again.

And the thing with Soohyun’s attack - that would’ve been a great time for Yohan to go after her if needed because at that point, him and Gaon were still on shaky ground in their relationship. Yohan didn’t understand his own feelings for Gaon, and he wasn’t at the point of considering other people and/or changing is ways (to an extent).

I’ve also posted previously about how Soohyun and the professor use confirmation bias to convict Yohan of things he hasn’t done - and this is just another example of the professor pointing fingers at Yohan to justify how wrong he is without seeing the bigger picture. That sounds way more in line with the professor and even with Yohan’s characterization of being misunderstood by literally everyone.

You’re very right in that the show hasn’t done anything to invoke sympathy for the professor’s side of the argument. In fact, he takes the side of the government if we’re going to compare him. He doesn’t even see the clues and make the connections between the president and his lackey’s, which truth be told, is right in front of his face - even Gaon pointed that out to Jinjoo because it’s right there. How would the professor not have seen Choongsik if Jinjoo has seen him, for example. I don’t remember if they publicly announced Choongsik leading the virus protection, but Gaon made it sound like they had, which again means the professor simply wasn’t paying attention, and I wonder why that is.... people just love Yohan, lmao.

To that, we can also note Gaon’s pointed statement during their meet up when Gaon tells the professor how much he failed in his position of power. “You should’ve done better. If people like you did better… If you did better as a chief justice, people wouldn’t need to do this. If only the people who are in charge of justice did their jobs well.” And yet he only has eyes for Yohan, still. Patterns!!!!

You also make a very, very valid point I hadn’t considered about Soohyun trying to tell him about Yohan in her last moments. That’s a very interesting thing to consider because normally when death like this happens, the character dying is always trying to get something important out, and this time, it’s just a play on Soohyun’s constant confession when Gaon cries.

I think for me personally, my biggest thing is that if they truly make Yohan the villain here, or do anything to seriously fuck up, then what lesson or point will that make? What profound notion will the show end on after everything we’ve been through because to me, the way the show is right now, it's set us all up to believe that Yohan is not the monster he’s made himself look like. Would they do that to his character for shock value? Because at that point, I feel like that’d be the only reason they’d do it - like, what else would be that justification of him going after bad people if he himself is that bad, too?

Anyway, I can talk myself in circles here. Cheers to waiting just a few more hours to find out. I just want to have hope the writers did the right thing, but we’ll see!!

Sksksksk so apparently im this close to losing my mind. So i found this picture while scrolling twitter (and honestly, the original point of this ask is just to show you this picture too ehe)

And Im like "OMG so adorable!!!! Is this Ikki's actor????" Bc sue me okay im bad at remembering faces. So I went to google to search for the actors name and went to Ikki profile at Kamen Rider Wiki fandom website (which didnt mention the actors name at all lmao) BUT I scroll down and find this under 'Weakness'

Revice Driver: Prolonged usage of the Revice Driver has the apparent side effect of slowly erasing the user's existence away, as shown with Ikki's image disappearing from various photographs of him and his family. Currently, Vice is the only one to have taken note of this, while the reasons behind this side effect have yet to be explained, nor is it known if even the Driver's creator is aware of this.

And Im like "??????" This is literally the worst possible information I ever got. I had read before that the reason Ikki's pic disappear bc its Kagerou's doing or whatever like that so I accept it. But this?????? If this actually true Im literally going to cry. (Then its makes me curious who actually put all the Riders information in the Wiki. Like how do they know?)

Ok finish with that, so I havent seen ep 10 yet but Ive seen a few short clips on twitter. Im super happy Daiji finally become Live (and I cant wait for Sakura turn 😆). In the clips, it show that Daiji still wearing Kagerou's outfits as he transformed. I was amazed at Daiji's actor bc even in Kagerou's outfits, I know that "Yup that is Daiji 🥺". Because you know how sometimes "same person different personality" depended a lot on outfits change but Daiji's actor could pull this off. Thats just so cool 😆

Yeah, Kentaro Maeda is a cutie. I believe this pic is a screenshot from the recent NHK Kamen Rider event, which he was guest on alongside Masahiro Inoue and Kouhei Takeda.

As for the whole thing about the Driver and the erasing existence thing... I think that’s pure conjecture at this point. I did look at Ikki’s article myself, and it doesn’t cite any sources whatsoever for that entire bit. The strengths/weaknesses portion of the Rider pages are a bit subjective to begin with, but this in particular is really iffy.

Kamen Rider Wiki is a good resource for Rider stuff, but it’s still a fan-produced wiki, and the site lets anyone who signs up post and edit the info on it. There are probably mods who check on the info and approve of whatever changes are made, but still, take whatever they say with a grain of salt especially when citations are lacking. Confirmed information will usually have citations, such as episode numbers, social media posts from cast and crew, page numbers from official guidebooks, magazine scans, etc. There is a plethora of Rider resources out there if you know where to look.

Daiji’s first henshin and fight as Live was pretty amazing. And yes, Wataru Hyuga is quite impressive as an actor and proved his chops playing both Daiji and Kagerou.

That’s actually quite rare these days- a lot of actors in recent KR and Sentai series are actually fairly new to the industry (like, the KR/Sentai show is their debut into showbiz new), so their acting isn’t always the best, though they do noticeably improve as the show goes on. Wataru being that good this early on is a good sign, not only for his performance in the show, but for his career afterward. Kid’s gonna go places, hopefully.

I can’t wait for Sakura to henshin... though I’m also worried because of the source of her Driver is iffy... I hope she has the same strength of character and spirit of justice as her brothers otherwise we’re in a world of trouble.

You weren’t expecting that she even heard you, but she did—somehow. “I heard that Ms. l/n” she yells back, her car turning back to your path as she rolls her side window down

You slightly cringed at the nickname “not the last name, ma’am” “why do u keep calling me miso” she asks with a soft whine, her car slowing down to your pace as u walk

“The hell we aren’t! Haven’t you watched horror movies at all?!? If we go check, there’s a 90% chance something bad will happen. I’m sure we didn’t hit anything. And even if we did hit a person, their bodies should have been flying and we should’ve heard or seen it! I’m sure they’ll live the fuck?” She quickly explains

Welcome to the fandom! Ahhh, glad to have you here!! <3 <3 Ah, it took me a minute to figure out which ep you were talking about, hahah! I think you mean TLD, LOL <3

Honestly? The answer varies, but most of us pretend it never happened, LOL LOL. Me personally, I think it’s fake and part of an “Unreliable Narrator” subplot as yet to be seen, mostly because the whole season seems so fake and phoney as heck. I also once theorised John was under hypnotic suggestion by Smith, which is one of the other theories I can accept as “happening in real life”.

There’s also an interesting post here that suggests John lashing out was inevitably going to happen and why. Obviously not how I want it to be, but I can see why.

HI! I'm new to the MDZS fandom and I fell in love with Suibian, but you don't see it that much. I seen somewhere that it would burn out a weaker core and I cried cause I wanted to see that, and as far as I know it doesn't happen anywhere. I'm wondering if you could tell me anything and everything you know about Suibian. I'm starving for anything about it

hi anon! ahahah, it’s always a dangerous thing to ask me about “anything and everything” on a topic because I usually have too many thoughts, most of which are unorganized. but! if you’re interested in that, then here we go!

First, re: your comment about Suibian burning out a weaker core: I am not aware of this theory (or is it something from an interview?? if someone knows, please say so!), but if it brings you joy, then it’s certainly an interesting one to consider! Unfortunately, I don’t have much more to say on it because I’m unfamiliar with it, but I do have quite a lot to say on some other Suibian concepts!

ask and ye shall receive (a very jumbled heap of thoughts as i spiral further and further out of control):

[all rough translations are mine, and thus all mistakes are mine. I am using the version of the novel that is available on luoxia because I can’t be bothered to go flipping through my print edition ahaha.]

the questions about Suibian that interest me the most are why it sealed, when it sealed, when Wei Wuxian began to wield it again, and what that might all mean. I’m going to be talking about novel, CQL, and audio drama canon all together, because I think looking at each canon alone and in combination can raise a lot of very different points!! (I have not watched the donghua or read the manhua yet, so forgive me, I have nothing to say about them. /o\)

So! the one piece of information that we’re given consistently throughout all three of the canons is that Suibian was sealed after Wei Wuxian’s death and that no one but Wei Wuxian himself (and Jiang Cheng, by proxy) could draw it from its sheathe. Thus, Wei Wuxian’s identity is revealed and the golden core swap comes to light. Wei Wuxian is surprised by this, and asks Lan Wangji, “Did it really seal itself?” (novel, chapter 63; CQL, ep 42; audio drama, S2E15).

The novel and audio drama both include a line from Wei Wuxian that emphasizes Wei Wuxian’s surprise, implying that sword-sealing is very uncommon:

Something incredible that happens less than once per ten thousand times, and I actually encountered it.

the irony, of course, is that this incredible thing is what ended up blowing his cover. rip Wei Wuxian.

but what I think gets really interesting is comparing different points at which Suibian sealed itself and what that might imply in conjunction with other information. Jin Guangyao says “shortly after” his death, but CQL includes a scene in episode 19 that implies that Suibian actually sealed itself much earlier.

(in case anyone is curious, it’s about 30 minutes in. I spent the effort to make the gif, so I might as well give you the timestamp lol)

this scene takes place during the period of time when Wei Wuxian is in the Mass Graves (aka the Burial Mounds) after Wen Chao cast him down and left him for dead, right near the beginning of Sunshot. I’m fairly certain it’s not mentioned in either the novel or the audio drama, so this is a CQL-only detail. (please correct me if I’m wrong; I get my canons muddled all the time //hides face)

CQL basically does nothing narratively with this scene other than giving us some sad shots of Lan Wangji and Jiang Cheng (honestly, valid ;A;) but!! if we decide to accept this scene as our jumping off point, we can get to some interpretations about Wei Wuxian using information from the other canons!

take this exchange from chapter 57 of the novel (immediately prior to the massacre at lotus cove):

江澄道：“还不是又为咱们的剑的事去温家了。一想到我的三毒现在说不定被哪只温狗握在手里，真是……”

他面露嫌恶之色，魏无羡道：“可惜咱们的剑还不够灵，要是能自动封剑，那就谁也别想用了。”

江澄道：“你再修炼个八十年，说不定可以。”

Jiang Cheng said, “He’s gone to the Wen sect regarding our swords again, hasn’t he. Whenever I think that my Sandu might even now be in some Wen-dog’s hands, ugh…”

His face filled with loathing, Wei Wuxian said, “What a pity our swords don’t have enough spirit. If they could seal themselves, then no one could even think about using them.”

Jiang Cheng said, “If you kept cultivating for another eighty years, maybe.”

from the novel, it seems clear that sword-sealing is something that only happens when a person’s cultivation level is exceptionally high. if this is true, and we go with the CQL timeline of Suibian sealing itself long before Wei Wuxian’s death, it means that Wei Wuxian’s cultivation level wasn’t just high, it was leagues above pretty much anyone else when he was still a teenager. (In fact, Suibian had most likely already sealed by the time this conversation takes place.)

If we don’t go with CQL’s timeline, however, I think we could make a very different argument. It’s a bit of a reach, but I think it’s a lot of fun, if you’re willing to come with me on this journey!

Jin Guangyao says Suibian sealed itself “shortly after” Wei Wuxian’s death, but we don’t really have external confirmation of that. For all we know, someone only bothered to test it sometime after his death, and Suibian had been sealed for some indefinite amount of time. All we can say for sure is that by some point shortly after Wei Wuxian’s death, Suibian was already sealed and resisted being drawn by anyone who tried it.

We’re told over and over that one can only wield a spiritual sword effectively if you have a golden core/the spiritual energy to match it. Wei Wuxian stops carrying/using Suibian because he knows that in his hands, it will act as nothing more than an ordinary sword. His method of cultivation is no longer suitable for the sword. Suibian is tied to both Wei Wuxian’s soul and his golden core.

If sword-sealing only happens when the cultivator’s level is unbelievably high, then I think we can make the argument here that by the time of his death, Wei Wuxian’s core was likewise unbelievably strong – but Wei Wuxian is no longer the one developing his core. Jiang Cheng is.

I know it’s a ridiculous reach. To be clear, I don’t think the text actually intends this or supports this in any meaningful way, but I do think that it gives us some very tasty potential!! If Suibian sealed itself sometime after the core transfer (which, honestly, we wouldn’t know – after all, who’s been trying to draw Wei Wuxian’s sword?), but just if, I think we can plausibly make the argument that Jiang Cheng’s cultivation is truly extraordinary.

It’s fun right?? It’s a fun concept!!! Even if it’s nonsense, even if it’s not that deep, even if this was an unintentional coincidence, I think it would be interesting to look at this as being some kind of measure of Jiang Cheng’s accomplishments. On the flip side, I also think it’s very important thematically that Jiang Cheng’s value as a person has nothing to do with his cultivation, that he is, in fact, always second-best, but that doesn’t make him any less worthwhile or deserving of love. Maybe I’m just projecting lmao. Of course, being extraordinary doesn’t preclude him from still lagging behind Wei Wuxian–Wei Wuxian might have just been more extraordinary ahahah. We can have both!!

Now for a totally different thing! Interestingly, this conversation about cultivation levels and sword-sealing (the one with Jiang Cheng) also happens in the audio drama, S2E12 (about 15 minutes in, since I just checked), but Wei Wuxian adds an additional comment:

(don’t have the transcription of the original chinese, I’m just going to translate it as I hear it)

“But maybe you don’t need to cultivate to a certain level to have your sword seal itself. What if there were some other way?”

these two versions of the conversation actually imply pretty different things, I think! this addition opens the possibility to the audience that sword-sealing is possible even without an extraordinary level of cultivation, and I think lends credence to the idea that Suibian is just an unusually loyal sword, regardless of Wei Wuxian’s cultivation level. Whether that’s something inherent to Suibian’s “personality”, or whether this says something about how Wei Wuxian inspires loyalty wherever he goes, or whether it just speaks to the strength of their bond remains to be seen.

(obviously, this could imply any number of other things as well, but I find this to be the interpretation that makes me happiest.)

If we go with “Suibian seals itself after Wei Wuxian’s death” in this canon, I think this emphasizes the loyalty aspect with a touch of grief.

If we combine this with CQL and have “Suibian has been loyal since he was a teenager”, that also emphasizes the loyalty aspect – just in a different way.

Of course, doing meta combining unique details from different canons is largely pointless in terms of crafting any real “analysis”, so I’m mostly saying all of this because I enjoy the process of building the supercanon in my head that brings me the most joy! To summarize the varied interpretations I’ve brought up in this post:

CQL-only: Suibian sealed itself when Wei Wuxian was a teenager, at latest, by the time he was thrown into the Mass Graves.

Novel-only: Sword-sealing is very rare and achievable only through extraordinarily high cultivation. Shortly after Wei Wuxian’s death, Suibian is discovered to have sealed itself, so Wei Wuxian’s core, by the time of his death, was extraordinarily powerful.

Audio drama-only: Sword-sealing is considered very rare and achievable only through extraordinarily high cultivation, but might also be accomplished by other methods. Shortly after Wei Wuxian’s death, Suibian is discovered to have sealed itself. If Wei Wuxian’s core is not wildly and improbably powerful, this implies that Suibian has become an exceptionally loyal sword by the time of his death.

CQL/novel: Wei Wuxian was already incredibly powerful by the time he was a teenager.

CQL/audio drama: Suibian has been exceptionally loyal to Wei Wuxian since at least his teenage years.

Novel and audio drama-only have a much wider range of when Suibian could have sealed itself, as mentioned, so there are further variances within those interpretations.

there’s a lot of potential here!! with my personal feelings regarding the story, I like novel-only with Suibian sealing post-core transfer, audio drama-only with Suibian sealing post-Wei Wuxian’s death, or CQL/audio drama with Suibian sealing as a teenager pretty much all equally. I think the CQL/novel interpretation gets too close to casting Wei Wuxian as a hyper-special and innately noble individual in a way that undercuts the strength of his character arc, but that’s my opinion. (As an aside, this is actually one of my major complaints about CQL in general, independent from what I’m talking about here. But that is a topic for another day ahahaha. To be clear, I still love CQL very much, despite my many frustrations!)

As for what I think is the most “likely” to be the “right” interpretation (whatever that’s worth), I would probably say the one that emphasizes Suibian’s loyalty with Suibian sealing post-death, because I think it’s the most thematically cohesive and has the textual support to back it. (I think it’s a valid interpretation even using novel-only text; it’s just slightly less explicit without the additional comment from Wei Wuxian.)

A final detail:

We don’t get anything from either CQL or the novel that explicitly addresses when/if Wei Wuxian is able to wield Suibian again, but the audio drama’s rendition of the “Yunmeng” extra very subtly indicates that by the time that extra takes place, Wei Wuxian has cultivated a golden core and is carrying his sword once more. You only get it at a couple of moments, but Suibian sometimes clinks when Wei Wuxian moves or when he bumps into something. The two instances I can remember specifically are when Lan Wangji tosses the ring onto him (the ring hits Suibian), and when he’s rowing the little boat onto the lotus pond and the motion makes a sound. It’s!!! Extremely good!!! It makes my heart very full!!!!!

huh. so yoongi is on the other end of the spectrum: he doesn’t bend. i find the characterization of yoongi in this story fascinating because yoongi in real life pretty much doesn’t give a shit about petty dealbreakers… or at least that’s what he shows on camera because i don’t claim to know him personally of course. i mean, he always says shit along the lines of “who cares? it’s just [insert something]. what’s the big deal?” on cam lmao. and unless they’re in debate LMAOOOOO (yes im talking about the run BTS ep where they debated in a swimming pool hdkdhdkshdjdh)

Hmmmmmmmmm, I may have a hot take on Yoongi here! If you're interested in hearing me out, check out the info after the jump!

You're absolutely right about this characterization of Yoongi. He isn't willing to bend, and that's what his character is meant to explore. In contrast to Kitt, Yoongi faces certain challenges in being able to open up. This is why he suggests the kittenfishing idea to begin with. He's not an advocate for straight up catfishing/lying, but not necessarily because he's a saint. He also doesn't really want to change much about himself, nor does he want Kitt to change anything about herself. He'd rather just kinda dance around things. Keep things light enough so that he can adapt and move around if needed. Because once he gets to a certain level, he has to share a bit more. He has to open himself up. He will be left vulnerable.

You said yourself, 😻 Kittenfishing Anon, that his flaw as a best friend is that he's too soft. At the core of that is the worldview that he doesn't need to bend. That he doesn't want to bend. Because bending is hard. It's selfish, but from an ego preservation perspective, it's much safer to avoid connections altogether, and to leave when things get too close for comfort in the relationships he does foster.

And this is why I chose Yoongi for this characterization (apart from the fact that I just always put Yoongi in things because I'm an obsessed mess for him).

Yoongi does what he wants. He likes to keep to himself for the most part. He's stated that he's not looking for a romantic relationship right now because he's focused on work, so he recognizes that he just isn't in a place where he can fully offer himself to another person. Not saying that's a bad thing by any means. In fact, knowing that he is emotionally unavailable in that way shows self-awareness. I just happened to see it as something to base a completely fictional characterization on.

Another bit that fuels this characterization is that he's stated that his friendship with the guys is the first experience of this deep of a connection. Even with them, his closest confidants, he's still so uncomfortable accepting the phrase, "I love you".

It's so easy for him to give love to others. Though he still kinda cringes when he expresses that love, he's certainly able to tell the others that he loves them. And yet, it still seems cringe-y for him to accept it back.

I agree that he takes things quite lightly. It's easy for him to say "so what?" about lots of things. But maybe it's because those things don't require him to be that involved. They don't really have anything to do with him. I wonder if he would say "so what?" about his music, for example, or anything that he views as an extension of himself. Does he demand to have more control? How might this change if he were dealing with something that has implications for how he is seen in the world?

I took that and ran with it for this fictional characterization, burying within that the fear of losing one's independence. Losing one's self. It's not really about the dealbreakers. It's the view that any particular thing that differs from his worldview will threaten him at his core. Especially when the stakes are high, like with a romantic relationship. A cheeseless pizza in and of itself isn't a terrible thing. But does that mean he has to eat cheeseless pizzas for the rest of his life?

Silly? Perhaps! But it's the kind of personality trait that I wanted to explore and use as a foil to Kitt's overextending. She wants to lose herself because she thinks she's so unimportant. She's willing to lose herself to win someone over. At the start of the story, this characterization of Yoongi would rather live alone forever than have to change himself or make room for something new. By the end, he sees that maybe it's not one or the other!
